- 0:00Speaker 1: There's still time left on the clock in Baton Rouge.
- 0:03Speaker 1: And I want to say that up front because normally
- 0:05Speaker 1: that matters. Normally I would wait. I would let a
- 0:07Speaker 1: game breathe for a moment. I would read a few
- 0:10Speaker 1: recaps to make sure that nothing in my notes was wrong.
- 0:13Speaker 1: I would want to get final stat totals and make
- 0:15Speaker 1: sure that I could highlight specific things, but not tonight
- 0:21Speaker 1: because with 12 minutes to go, LSU is up 44
- 0:24Speaker 1: to three and the final score literally does not matter anymore.
- 0:28Speaker 1: The story is, is what matters. This is ACC Football Addiction.
- 0:33Speaker 1: I'm TJ. We appreciate you guys for tuning in. We
- 0:36Speaker 1: are presented by PrizePix, where all new users who play
- 0:38Speaker 1: a $ 5 lineup and win get $ 150 in lineups instantly. Again,
- 0:44Speaker 1: the code there is HMA. We'll just say it. What
- 0:48Speaker 1: the heck happened to Clemson? We'll set the table because
- 0:52Speaker 1: I do think context matters here. This It wasn't a
- 0:55Speaker 1: trap game. This wasn't a bad matchup on paper. Clemson
- 0:58Speaker 1: came into Death Valley, the LSU version of it, and
- 1:02Speaker 1: the No. 11 team in the country was walking into
- 1:04Speaker 1: Lane Kiffin's first game as a head coach. This was
- 1:08Speaker 1: supposed to be a measuring stick. Instead, it turned into
- 1:12Speaker 1: an autopsy. It started early, and honestly, it started well.
- 1:16Speaker 1: On LSU's second play from scrimmage, Sam Leavitt threw an interception,
- 1:20Speaker 1: and Clemson took over deep in LSU territory. Clemson led first,
- 1:26Speaker 1: 3-0 score. That's about the last thing that went right
- 1:30Speaker 1: all night. Because a few drives later, Christopher Vazina threw
- 1:33Speaker 1: a pass that should have never left his hand. LSU's
- 1:37Speaker 1: Jordan Ross stepped in front of it, and he took
- 1:39Speaker 1: it back 30 yards the other way for a touchdown.
- 1:42Speaker 1: And just like that, it was 17-3 LSU in the
- 1:45Speaker 1: first quarter. Here's the thing about that play. It was
- 1:49Speaker 1: not a fluke. Unfortunately for the Tigers from South Carolina,
- 1:53Speaker 1: it was a preview. From there, LSU did what dominant
- 1:56Speaker 1: teams do. They overmatched Clemson. They didn't need trick plays.
- 2:01Speaker 1: They didn't need a miracle. They just ran the football
- 2:03Speaker 1: down your throat. Sam Leavitt, the Arizona State transfer everybody
- 2:06Speaker 1: wanted to see under center for Kiffin, didn't even need
- 2:09Speaker 1: his arm to do the damage tonight. 11 carries. He
- 2:13Speaker 1: had 100 yards, two touchdowns on the ground. He had
- 2:15Speaker 1: an 8-yard scramble and a 13-yard sidestep into the end
- 2:19Speaker 1: zone that had Tiger Stadium shaking. Deion Jones was right
- 2:23Speaker 1: there with him, 81 yards at the time I'm recording
- 2:25Speaker 1: this and a score of his own. Meanwhile, Clemson's offense
- 2:28Speaker 1: was doing this, minus two rushing yards, 53 total yards,
- 2:35Speaker 1: two rushing yards at one stretch of the game. Not 200,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I'm talking two. By halftime, LSU led 31-3, and it
- 2:43Speaker 1: genuinely could have been worse. Kiffin said so himself. He
- 2:47Speaker 1: told ESPN's Holly Rowe at the break that his team
- 2:50Speaker 1: should have been up 38-0 if not for that mistake
- 2:52Speaker 1: in the first quarter on the first drive. Let that
- 2:55Speaker 1: sink in for a second. The winning coach was mad
- 2:58Speaker 1: that his team wasn't winning by more. And then, of course,
- 3:01Speaker 1: in typical Lane Kiffin fashion, he dropped the line that
- 3:04Speaker 1: everyone will repeat. Imagine if we had pro players. That's
- 3:09Speaker 1: not just a coach that's talking a little smack. That's
- 3:11Speaker 1: a coach who watched his defense completely erase an opposing
- 3:15Speaker 1: offense from for 30 straight minutes and decided, hey, that
- 3:19Speaker 1: score still isn't disrespectful enough. So what did Dabo do?
- 3:23Speaker 1: He made the move you make when there's nothing left
- 3:25Speaker 1: to lose. Late in the second quarter, Christopher Vazina, the
- 3:28Speaker 1: guy who won the starting job in fall camp, the
- 3:30Speaker 1: guy that Sweeney praised for his steadiness, got pulled. In
- 3:34Speaker 1: comes Tate Reynolds. True freshman, never taken a college snap
- 3:38Speaker 1: in his life. His first offensive series as Clemson's quarterback,
- 3:42Speaker 1: he completed a seven-yard pass, and he got sacked for
- 3:45Speaker 1: a loss on third down punt. Welcome to Death Valley.
- 3:50Speaker 1: And here's what tells you how bad things had gotten.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Sweeney didn't hedge it at all at halftime. Reporters asked
- 3:58Speaker 1: if he would keep Reynolds in in the second half.
- 4:00Speaker 1: He said probably so. Not we'll evaluate. We'll see how
- 4:03Speaker 1: Chris bounces back. Probably. Probably. When your head coach can't
- 4:07Speaker 1: commit to bringing the guy back who won the job
- 4:09Speaker 1: in August, you already know what kind of night it's been.
- 4:12Speaker 1: And it didn't get much better after halftime. It got worse.
- 4:16Speaker 1: LSU came out of the locker room and just kept
- 4:18Speaker 1: adding to it. Levitt found Winston Watkins Jr. open wide
- 4:21Speaker 1: open for another score through the air. Because at some point,
- 4:24Speaker 1: a defense that's already broken mentally starts breaking down physically too.
- 4:28Speaker 1: And it never stopped. By the time we're recording this,
- 4:31Speaker 1: LSU's up 44-3, and I don't even want to turn
- 4:34Speaker 1: around and look at it again. 44-3 against a team
- 4:39Speaker 1: that's breaking in a first-year head coach in a game
- 4:42Speaker 1: that's his very first game in that stadium. That's not
- 4:45Speaker 1: a loss, man. That is a message. I know you
- 4:48Speaker 1: guys don't want me to sell anything to you, but
- 4:50Speaker 1: I'll quickly tell you, if you need to cheer yourself up,
- 4:52Speaker 1: there's always retail therapy. You can go to alumnihall.com or
- 4:56Speaker 1: just alumnihall in person when they're open tomorrow and save
- 5:00Speaker 1: 15% by using our code CFA15. Again, appreciate Alumni Hall
- 5:04Speaker 1: for their support. So the real question here is not
- 5:08Speaker 1: who wins the game. We clearly have known that since
- 5:11Speaker 1: probably the first quarter, maybe second quarter if you're being generous.
- 5:13Speaker 1: The real question is what this means for Clemson going forward.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Because this isn't just about one bad Saturday. This is
- 5:20Speaker 1: a program that spent the last year trying to convince
- 5:24Speaker 1: everyone that it's still Clemson. It's still the same operation
- 5:27Speaker 1: that won two national titles. It's still a team that
- 5:30Speaker 1: belongs in the sports top tier. And every time that
- 5:33Speaker 1: argument starts to build a little momentum, something like this happens.
- 5:37Speaker 1: It's an offensive line that can't create a rushing lane.
- 5:39Speaker 1: It's a quarterback competition that apparently isn't as settled as
- 5:43Speaker 1: fall camp made it sound. It's a defense that couldn't
- 5:46Speaker 1: get a single stop against an offense that hadn't played
- 5:48Speaker 1: a real game together yet. That's not one flaw. That's
- 5:51Speaker 1: a program wide problem showing up all at once on
- 5:56Speaker 1: national TV in week one. And look, I get it.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Every fan base wants to point to the 12 minutes
- 6:03Speaker 1: on the clock and say, we don't know how bad
- 6:05Speaker 1: this will actually be. We do know, man. It's 44-3.
- 6:09Speaker 1: I don't need to look at it again. Maybe Clemson
- 6:12Speaker 1: scores a couple times in garbage time and makes the
- 6:14Speaker 1: score look slightly less brutal. It won't change what we
- 6:17Speaker 1: all watched. It won't change the quarterback change. It won't
- 6:20Speaker 1: ease Kiffin's line about pro players. It won't erase the
- 6:24Speaker 1: minus two yards rushing in the first half against a
- 6:27Speaker 1: team breaking in a brand new coaching staff. Final scores
- 6:31Speaker 1: get forgotten, but the film does not. So where does
- 6:34Speaker 1: Clemson go from here? Does Reynolds keep the job next week?
- 6:38Speaker 1: Does Vazina get a real chance to respond, or is
- 6:40Speaker 1: the moment for the competition actually flipped for good? And
- 6:46Speaker 1: bigger than either quarterback, can this offensive line hold up
- 6:49Speaker 1: against literally anybody on the schedule if it couldn't move
- 6:52Speaker 1: the ball at all tonight? LSU's a good team, man.
- 6:56Speaker 1: I think they show that they can compete for the
- 6:58Speaker 1: playoffs this year. But you've got more teams on the
- 7:00Speaker 1: schedule that are going to do the same exact thing.
- 7:04Speaker 1: There are real questions that Clemson has to answer starting
- 7:08Speaker 1: Sunday morning. Because right now, with the clock still running
- 7:11Speaker 1: in Baton Rouge, the only thing that's actually finished is
- 7:15Speaker 1: the illusion that this team was ever ready for the moment.
- 7:18Speaker 1: They were not. And we'll see if Dabo can fix that.
- 7:22Speaker 1: But tonight, Clemson didn't just lose a game. They got
- 7:26Speaker 1: absolutely exposed on national television for the entire country to see. Now,
- 7:32Speaker 1: they'll come back and they'll win next week. There's no
- 7:34Speaker 1: doubt in my mind. They'll come out and they'll probably
- 7:37Speaker 1: look great against Georgia Southern. Well, I tell you what,
- 7:40Speaker 1: that North Carolina game ain't looking as easy as we
- 7:42Speaker 1: might have thought it was after watching them win in Dublin.
- 7:45Speaker 1: That game at Cal... Ain't looking very good based on
- 7:47Speaker 1: what I'm watching JKS do right now against UCLA. That
- 7:51Speaker 1: game at home against Miami, buddy, buckle up because they
- 7:54Speaker 1: got trenches too. Virginia Tech, Florida State on the road,
- 8:00Speaker 1: Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Duke. I don't think there's a
- 8:04Speaker 1: game on here that you could say that's a sure
- 8:05Speaker 1: win outside of maybe Charleston Southern and Georgia Southern. Some
- 8:10Speaker 1: things have to get figured out at Clemson, and they
- 8:13Speaker 1: have to get figured out quickly. Or, man, I'm a
- 8:16Speaker 1: Dabo fan. I make no bones about that. I liked
- 8:19Speaker 1: what he said about the pro players this week. I
- 8:21Speaker 1: liked what he said about the Forelli situation. I like
- 8:24Speaker 1: what he stands for. I like the way he lives
- 8:26Speaker 1: his life. I like his character. I like all that.
- 8:29Speaker 1: I've had several Clemson guys on the show. I've talked
- 8:31Speaker 1: with them about it. I'm a Dabo fan. But if
- 8:34Speaker 1: things don't fix themselves really, really quickly... Ain't going to
- 8:39Speaker 1: be much more dabble left in Clemson. I can tell
- 8:41Speaker 1: you that they will not take getting embarrassed like this.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Now you can bounce back 2024. They got embarrassed to
- 8:48Speaker 1: open up a season and they bounced back, but buddy,
- 8:50Speaker 1: you better figure it out real quick. This one feels
- 8:53Speaker 1: a little bit different. This one wasn't a game for
- 8:57Speaker 1: any time at all. That one against Georgia was for
- 9:00Speaker 1: a little bit. This one wasn't, this was a different energy.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I haven't seen Clemson look this defeated before. 2013 maybe.
- 9:10Speaker 1: And that night, I think he just got stunned. I
- 9:14Speaker 1: don't know that anybody saw this coming and maybe that's
- 9:17Speaker 1: part of the problem. I know you Clemson fans are
- 9:20Speaker 1: not happy. I know you're not in a good mood.
- 9:23Speaker 1: I'm disappointed for you. I don't cheer for the ACC.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I don't like the ACC. I wanted to see you
- 9:28Speaker 1: go in and be competitive tonight. I wanted to see
- 9:31Speaker 1: that 10 point spread be about where this game was
- 9:33Speaker 1: at its worst. It's, That spread was covered in about
- 9:38Speaker 1: 10 minutes tonight. And even though it was a weather
- 9:42Speaker 1: delay and everything else, this game was over before it started.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Let me know your thoughts down in the comments. I
- 9:47Speaker 1: know you're mad. Don't rage at me, man. I didn't
- 9:49Speaker 1: do it. But Dabo's got a lot to figure out.
