- 0:05Speaker 2: No, I don't think care.
- 0:28Speaker 3: Do some more.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Look what I say, I do it.
- 0:52Speaker 4: Let me.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Look like a man.
- 1:07Speaker 5: It's a single hour of a single day of your
- 1:09Speaker 5: favorite shows is at the Pond Center and don comd Center.
- 1:13Speaker 6: This his Kayzy and E College Station. Bryan check out the.
- 1:16Speaker 7: Original DJ designs at David Gardner's Jewelers nine to one
- 1:20Speaker 7: one University Drive in front of audio video.
- 1:24Speaker 8: Well Jefferson Airplane at Woodstock.
- 1:28Speaker 9: Uh, they played at eight in the morning on a
- 1:32Speaker 9: Sunday morning and kind of but the music had been
- 1:37Speaker 9: going on all night because they were so far behind.
- 1:41Speaker 8: Maybe Luke could get them for the IDI warm up show.
- 1:44Speaker 8: You probably should have. You know, well, which is gonna
- 1:48Speaker 8: That's a whole nother that's a whole nother story. We
- 1:51Speaker 8: were talking about that earlier. So that's that's an issue.
- 1:55Speaker 8: Robert Sessena is here. Welcome back.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Good.
- 1:58Speaker 8: No, you haven't been anywhere. You've been here covering the team.
- 2:02Speaker 8: Come on, it's spring practice.
- 2:06Speaker 3: It's two days. It's not spring anymore.
- 2:07Speaker 8: This is what this what means by Miller time. Alex
- 2:10Speaker 8: Miller knows that team inside and out because he's out
- 2:14Speaker 8: there calling place. That's a beautiful thing. Yeah, that's what
- 2:17Speaker 8: I'm thinking. And if they win and it's because of Alex, and.
- 2:21Speaker 9: If they lose, well, I'm glad you're here because I
- 2:24Speaker 9: don't have to talk baseball anymore. We were talking about
- 2:26Speaker 9: your man, Paul Skins. I'm not sure what's happened to him.
- 2:30Speaker 8: Last time I was here. In the show fill in
- 2:32Speaker 8: for hip stand. The man can attest this. I walk
- 2:35Speaker 8: in the Pirates or in third the third play wild card,
- 2:38Speaker 8: I was excited. I think there were three games over
- 2:41Speaker 8: five hundreds and they've just gone into tank since then.
- 2:44Speaker 8: It's you're sitting there like they're so painful to watch.
- 2:48Speaker 8: I don't know if the Rangers have they been. They've
- 2:50Speaker 8: been three over at one point this year, right, b
- 2:53Speaker 8: Yeah a couple times. Yeah, they made it to three
- 2:55Speaker 8: over five hundred a couple of time times and now
- 2:58Speaker 8: they're three under.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Yeah, but they don't.
- 3:00Speaker 7: I lost like a half game out of the playoffs,
- 3:02Speaker 7: so they went to and five.
- 3:04Speaker 8: Everybody in the division was like four and six this
- 3:07Speaker 8: week except for well. I actually, I think of the
- 3:10Speaker 8: last ten I saw, the Rangers were also four and sick.
- 3:13Speaker 7: The Angels were better than that because they played the Rangers.
- 3:17Speaker 8: But even the Dodgers are losing lately. It's Dodgers are
- 3:20Speaker 8: I think the Dodgers are bored.
- 3:22Speaker 7: Frankly, Hey, you know, so I saw the new rankings
- 3:25Speaker 7: the farm systems. I'm gonna take a guess, who's the
- 3:27Speaker 7: number one farm system in all baseball? No, No, they're
- 3:32Speaker 7: waiting at like seventeen, the Dodgers number one farm systems.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Really in baseball.
- 3:37Speaker 8: I would have never thought that, because you have to
- 3:38Speaker 8: give them up. I guess they just buy people.
- 3:42Speaker 3: They know what to do, they know what they're doing.
- 3:44Speaker 3: They scout better than anybody.
- 3:45Speaker 7: And this is why when people are like all anti Dodgers,
- 3:49Speaker 7: you know, they get Pulse, not paulse Kings.
- 3:51Speaker 8: They'll probably get him anyway.
- 3:52Speaker 3: They will get him if they want. They got scuball.
- 3:56Speaker 7: And so everybody's up in arms about the Dodgers ruined baseball.
- 4:00Speaker 3: They're just doing it right. They're doing it better than
- 4:02Speaker 3: everybody way it's supposed to be that.
- 4:04Speaker 8: Yeah, maybe they'll get an SEC football franchise.
- 4:06Speaker 7: How far down with the Rangers they had actually moved
- 4:09Speaker 7: up to from twenty nine from twenty five to twenty Okay, yeah,
- 4:13Speaker 7: so there's about five spots.
- 4:15Speaker 3: And the Astro stayed at twenty.
- 4:17Speaker 8: Nine, so really you're ahead of them. That's all that matters.
- 4:20Speaker 7: Well, well, it's not standing that counts now, not head
- 4:26Speaker 7: to head, not in the silvery No.
- 4:28Speaker 8: No, no, no no.
- 4:29Speaker 3: But I'm not going back down there. I promise you.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I vowed not to.
- 4:33Speaker 8: If you have, I'm gonna I'm gonna hold you to that.
- 4:35Speaker 8: You said you're not going back.
- 4:37Speaker 7: Yeah, I will only go to games in Arlington other
- 4:40Speaker 7: visiting parks, but I'm not going back to Houston.
- 4:42Speaker 8: Okay, they wouldn't they wouldn't put your name up on
- 4:44Speaker 8: the board.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Is that just not going back?
- 4:47Speaker 7: I looked at my record, you know, because the you
- 4:51Speaker 7: know the baseball app.
- 4:52Speaker 3: You know that you have to have for the tickets. Yeah,
- 4:54Speaker 3: so you know the the ballpark app. Yeah, so you
- 4:58Speaker 3: keep it keeps track of wins and losses.
- 5:02Speaker 7: When I've seen the Astros play, which is thirteen times
- 5:07Speaker 7: against the Rangers, the Astros are ninety four, so that
- 5:10Speaker 7: means the Rangers are four nine.
- 5:12Speaker 8: Yes, but I would I would argue that's just like
- 5:15Speaker 8: the normal. It's not because you're there, not there, that's
- 5:18Speaker 8: just kind of that.
- 5:19Speaker 7: But I will say that of those four victories, three
- 5:23Speaker 7: of them were in the playoffs.
- 5:24Speaker 8: Well that's important, so in regular scenes, I'm wanted not
- 5:30Speaker 8: might want to pay you with that. Without a dele Scarci,
- 5:33Speaker 8: maybe only thirteen.
- 5:34Speaker 7: Well we wouldn't have gone that long, so you know,
- 5:37Speaker 7: but hey, I'll always have Game seven.
- 5:39Speaker 8: And they'll always have Game seven.
- 5:41Speaker 7: And the obnoxiousness of Rusty Berson at Game seven was
- 5:44Speaker 7: over the top, especially at.
- 5:47Speaker 8: The end you put the taping. No, I can't believe that.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Yeah, I was really really, I'm noticious.
- 5:54Speaker 8: So what did you do this summer seas besides work?
- 5:57Speaker 8: You know, there's a lot to be sick. We spent
- 5:59Speaker 8: the two weeks in uh Naples at.
- 6:02Speaker 9: To be okay, eating okay, and went up one day,
- 6:05Speaker 9: didn't go to Tahoe.
- 6:06Speaker 8: Didn't know. We haven't going to Tahoe in a while. Okay,
- 6:09Speaker 8: this is a six year in a row. You know
- 6:11Speaker 8: they bred new Caesar's there, right, really yeah, brand new,
- 6:14Speaker 8: brand new, brand new, Yes, sir, you need to go
- 6:17Speaker 8: big time. Yeah. Yeah, it went well. One day up
- 6:20Speaker 8: to the uh up to the casino in Tampa and
- 6:24Speaker 8: played four eight limon and one hundred and fifty four dollars.
- 6:28Speaker 8: Look at you it's excited. That's pretty awesome. That's that's
- 6:31Speaker 8: a Roberts Sports rider deal. You know, hundred you know
- 6:34Speaker 8: play I played played for like six hours, you know right,
- 6:39Speaker 8: that's pretty good for eight tables. So you know it
- 6:41Speaker 8: was It was great because it was like playing at
- 6:44Speaker 8: your neighborhood. You didn't have that guy like get ghosts
- 6:47Speaker 8: ballistic because someone got a NASA on the river. It
- 6:49Speaker 8: was like they were all human beings, Like you sit
- 6:52Speaker 8: there and talk.
- 6:53Speaker 9: I mean that's more than twenty five bucks an hour.
- 6:55Speaker 9: That's more than you get paid at the Eagles.
- 6:57Speaker 8: So you were doing okay, wow, maybe maybe she and
- 7:00Speaker 8: maybe you should be a pro ma sh han't in Miley.
- 7:06Speaker 8: So other than that, that was about it and Sun.
- 7:11Speaker 8: So what is it about Naples? Well, okay, I just
- 7:15Speaker 8: grew up in Tampa, so you've got to go to
- 7:16Speaker 8: the beach and I can't even swim, so needless say,
- 7:19Speaker 8: I'm not so you. Yeah, I was that kid and
- 7:24Speaker 8: growing up and I always say I can't swim and
- 7:26Speaker 8: to go, oh no, and they throw you in the
- 7:27Speaker 8: pool because they couldn't believe you you couldn't swim, And
- 7:29Speaker 8: then someone had to come in and bring me out,
- 7:30Speaker 8: you know, because I'm throwing up water like and they go, oh,
- 7:33Speaker 8: he really can't swim. Let's let's you know, let's not
- 7:37Speaker 8: you know, that's pretty smart. But anyway, we started going
- 7:40Speaker 8: because when the kids were growing up, that's when we
- 7:42Speaker 8: went to Tahoe. We had a time show Tahoe. We'd
- 7:44Speaker 8: go out horseback riding, went down the Trucky River, loved
- 7:48Speaker 8: going to Tall because the weather at that time was
- 7:50Speaker 8: just absolutely beautiful. So once the kids going on, okay,
- 7:53Speaker 8: now just go we can go back to the beach.
- 7:55Speaker 8: So we drove to Pensacola the first few years because
- 7:58Speaker 8: you could make that in one true cat you're on
- 8:00Speaker 8: the beach. But then that beach is not that good.
- 8:03Speaker 8: So then we went down to when you said it's
- 8:06Speaker 8: not that good. It too crowd, not blue, not blue enough,
- 8:08Speaker 8: too far you gonna walk whatever? Okay, And even I
- 8:12Speaker 8: could say that, okay, too far from Deston, is it? No,
- 8:15Speaker 8: you're right, So then we started going to those other beaches,
- 8:19Speaker 8: even though we were at Pencil Cole down twenty miles.
- 8:24Speaker 8: So then we said we'll just go to Duston. So
- 8:26Speaker 8: we started to stay at Deston and and I like
- 8:29Speaker 8: Dustin you ran into a lot of football coaches there.
- 8:33Speaker 8: The summer problem was way too many people. Suddenly, you know,
- 8:37Speaker 8: all of a sudden, your fight, You're gonna wait two
- 8:39Speaker 8: hours to eat supper or whatever.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Beach.
- 8:42Speaker 8: But yeah about Alabama, Yeah, we stopped there and looked
- 8:46Speaker 8: at it. Okay, the best story I ever tell about
- 8:49Speaker 8: this the first time I tried to take my wife
- 8:50Speaker 8: to the beach. I tried to do two things, and
- 8:53Speaker 8: I found out in Mississippi, you go to Bloxi. Yes,
- 8:57Speaker 8: there's the beach, you know, and not much of the beach.
- 9:01Speaker 8: So we go there, we go, we go, we got
- 9:04Speaker 8: we go. We go there and check in at the hotel.
- 9:08Speaker 8: We go out to the beach. Jessica goes, I want
- 9:12Speaker 8: to go home. So I get on the I get
- 9:16Speaker 8: on the phone, and I find wherever it was, whether
- 9:20Speaker 8: it was Dustin, we found somewhere to go. The next
- 9:23Speaker 8: day we're at a real beach. But anyway, so I
- 9:27Speaker 8: like Deston fill into Dustin. But once again is I'm
- 9:29Speaker 8: not a guy, and on vacation, I don't like to
- 9:31Speaker 8: wait in line food. So then one one time, Jessica
- 9:37Speaker 8: is very serious about her beach. So we're at Deston
- 9:41Speaker 8: and the weather is going to be bad for the
- 9:42Speaker 8: whole weekend. Okay, we got a room in Destin, so
- 9:46Speaker 8: she find out the weather three hundred miles to south's
- 9:49Speaker 8: going to be nice this weekend. So now we also
- 9:51Speaker 8: have rooms in Naples. So we drive down to Naples
- 9:54Speaker 8: for two days and suddenly there's nobody there. Because you
- 9:59Speaker 8: talk to this people whatever, if you go to Wikipedia, whatever. Yeah,
- 10:03Speaker 8: I think Naples is if let's say it's forty thousand
- 10:06Speaker 8: people there whatever it is, or fifty, but on like December,
- 10:10Speaker 8: January and February they get increased by like one hundred
- 10:13Speaker 8: and twenty thousand. Some people come, all all the snowbirds.
- 10:16Speaker 8: And when you're out on the beach and you see
- 10:18Speaker 8: all those high rises, about three fourths of them are
- 10:22Speaker 8: covered with with the with during the summer, right because
- 10:25Speaker 8: there's nobody there. Yeah, and you're on on the beach
- 10:28Speaker 8: and except for Sundays, a lot of times I would
- 10:31Speaker 8: say within one hundred yards there might have been eight
- 10:34Speaker 8: of us. That's crazy. Oh yeah, it's great. But you
- 10:36Speaker 8: gotta drive extra day.
- 10:37Speaker 3: To and front.
- 10:38Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, because you go to the But to me,
- 10:39Speaker 8: that's worth it. But it's worth it when you go
- 10:41Speaker 8: into the restaurant, like there's this one place where you
- 10:43Speaker 8: go eating subs whatever. You go in there, they almost
- 10:45Speaker 8: they talk to you and know it's like, hey, they go.
- 10:47Speaker 8: You would't want to be here in December. I go,
- 10:49Speaker 8: love they go because the people in the beach. This
- 10:53Speaker 8: time it was not warmest has ever been, like ninety
- 10:56Speaker 8: seven or there. In June, we had great weather every day.
- 11:01Speaker 8: It was nice.
- 11:02Speaker 3: See I'm not a beach person either, but I mean.
- 11:05Speaker 8: I gotta get away from the Eagle because if I
- 11:08Speaker 8: stay here, it's like you gotta work, somebody's gonna do.
- 11:11Speaker 7: I thought I was gonna be a beach person when
- 11:13Speaker 7: I got hired by the Gallstonda News and I was like, Oh,
- 11:15Speaker 7: this is gonna be perfect.
- 11:16Speaker 3: I'm gonna be at the beach every day. That's not
- 11:17Speaker 3: a real beach, no.
- 11:18Speaker 7: But the first two days I was there, the first
- 11:21Speaker 7: two days I was there with the beach. I didn't
- 11:23Speaker 7: go back to the beach in the next three years.
- 11:25Speaker 7: I was like, no, this is not not my pain.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I did.
- 11:29Speaker 7: I did a couple of fishing, you know, excursions, you know,
- 11:31Speaker 7: but not like a day at the beach.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Beach that just wasn't for you to charge in South Carolina?
- 11:37Speaker 8: Was because was it? Because the beach is a real
- 11:39Speaker 8: pretty and gal of the center and that's just not.
- 11:41Speaker 7: Your I mean, I didn't like getting all sandy and
- 11:44Speaker 7: dirty and getting sand in the car, and it was
- 11:46Speaker 7: like I never felt like you're clean ever, like I
- 11:49Speaker 7: mean car clean.
- 11:51Speaker 3: I had to like wash my car every day. I
- 11:53Speaker 3: just like it was rusty.
- 11:54Speaker 8: Like just like I've always said, I liked the beach
- 11:57Speaker 8: except for the sand. Yeah, if it wasn't the sand,
- 12:00Speaker 8: I really like to be.
- 12:01Speaker 3: Sand is everywhere.
- 12:02Speaker 6: I know.
- 12:02Speaker 8: It's like you know, or you get people everywhere.
- 12:04Speaker 7: You mean, people come down to see me, and I'm like,
- 12:07Speaker 7: y'all go beach, Fine, no beach and then they track
- 12:09Speaker 7: sand all into.
- 12:10Speaker 8: Your ass like it so you're more of a mountain
- 12:14Speaker 8: sky it is.
- 12:15Speaker 3: I'm more of a ballpark guy. It's nice. It's nice.
- 12:18Speaker 8: It's nice to sit there with nothing going on.
- 12:20Speaker 3: I like to go.
- 12:21Speaker 7: My family makes fun of me because when we go
- 12:23Speaker 7: on vacation, we're going now, I mean we do that too.
- 12:27Speaker 3: We're not I'm not sitting around.
- 12:29Speaker 8: And not gonna be like sitting in.
- 12:31Speaker 9: The I did more sitting around on my vacation this
- 12:33Speaker 9: year than I've ever done before, and I did not
- 12:36Speaker 9: like it. I liked it for a couple of nights
- 12:38Speaker 9: or three days.
- 12:39Speaker 7: We're gonna go to Washington to see It's the every
- 12:41Speaker 7: museum we possibly can't base.
- 12:43Speaker 8: That's what That's what I do.
- 12:45Speaker 9: Okay, on vacation, I am going you know now, I'm
- 12:48Speaker 9: fishing some of the days, but I'm going somewhere.
- 12:51Speaker 8: I'm doing something at.
- 12:53Speaker 9: This this time, we had two weeks at at a
- 12:58Speaker 9: condo U in the mountains, and and the doors open,
- 13:02Speaker 9: the weather's lovely, restaurants are great. It's crowded, but it's like,
- 13:10Speaker 9: after like a week eight days, I'm going, okay, I
- 13:15Speaker 9: need this isn't working right. So that's probably the last
- 13:19Speaker 9: time I'll do that, because usually I'm going from place
- 13:22Speaker 9: to I'm not going somewhere unpacking for a week or
- 13:26Speaker 9: ten days and then coming home. Right, it's like three
- 13:30Speaker 9: days at this place, two days at this place, three
- 13:33Speaker 9: days at this place, because I'm going to different places.
- 13:37Speaker 3: We went to the mountains years ago.
- 13:39Speaker 7: We went to go see the Rangers and Rockies, and
- 13:40Speaker 7: I thought, hey, we'll go to the right, We'll go
- 13:42Speaker 7: to the mountains.
- 13:43Speaker 3: I'll take the kids white water raft. Yeah, you know
- 13:45Speaker 3: they'll love that.
- 13:46Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 13:46Speaker 3: And so we get all wet, suited up and everything.
- 13:49Speaker 7: We get into to the We have a terrible tour guide, right,
- 13:52Speaker 7: and I mean he's just zoned out.
- 13:55Speaker 3: He's typical Colorado. Yeah, he's been smoking. Yeah, yeah already.
- 13:59Speaker 7: Yeah, he's out there. He's terrible. He's not giving us instruction.
- 14:03Speaker 7: Ends up, we're end up in the water twice. Both
- 14:06Speaker 7: of my daughters are crying. My son wants to fight
- 14:09Speaker 7: the tour guide.
- 14:10Speaker 3: And I tell him, like, and I spent like five hundred.
- 14:13Speaker 7: Dollars, oh yeah, And I said, take take me to
- 14:16Speaker 7: the side over here and call the van and come
- 14:18Speaker 7: pick me up.
- 14:19Speaker 3: And the guy goes, what it's like, you're not even
- 14:21Speaker 3: halfway through. I said, We've been in the water twice.
- 14:24Speaker 3: My daughter's crying, my son wants to fight you.
- 14:27Speaker 8: Wow.
- 14:27Speaker 7: And so the van comes and picks us up, and
- 14:30Speaker 7: it smells like pot like you in the van, and
- 14:34Speaker 7: they're making fun of us the whole time.
- 14:36Speaker 3: That well, anyway, it's we've got the picture.
- 14:38Speaker 8: It was a bad experience.
- 14:39Speaker 7: It was a great it's great moment in the burs
- 14:43Speaker 7: We got stories.
- 14:44Speaker 8: You have stories and the Rangers won the series this year.
- 14:48Speaker 9: This year, you wouldn't have been able to do any
- 14:49Speaker 9: whitewater rafting because it hasn't rained. And the snow they
- 14:54Speaker 9: didn't have that either, and it looked like it hadn't
- 14:57Speaker 9: rained in the state of Colorado for about five years.
- 15:00Speaker 3: It was cold in those water.
- 15:01Speaker 8: I remember that when the water is always usually the summer,
- 15:04Speaker 8: it's it's it's nice, it's cold.
- 15:07Speaker 3: It was cold.
- 15:08Speaker 8: Really, Oh yeah, interesting, not this time, man.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 15:11Speaker 7: So we started off and we saw this beautiful ram
- 15:13Speaker 7: come down the mountain and yeah, it's beautiful.
- 15:17Speaker 3: And then the rapids start coming.
- 15:18Speaker 8: And the guy's name was Niko, So you still remember.
- 15:22Speaker 3: Yeah, still, Nico is a name that haunts me at
- 15:26Speaker 3: all levels post office soon, yeah exactly. But anyway, Nico
- 15:32Speaker 3: gives us no.
- 15:33Speaker 8: Hit your family and the raft else okay.
- 15:37Speaker 3: And we're like, we're about to hit the rock.
- 15:39Speaker 7: Sure enough, we hit the rock and went over he
- 15:42Speaker 7: is and my wife, they're not supposed to do that.
- 15:45Speaker 3: She was the only one that managed to stay in
- 15:47Speaker 3: the boat whole. She's out there like handing us ars
- 15:50Speaker 3: like to pulls back in.
- 15:52Speaker 8: You like that sounds like a raft trip from hell.
- 15:55Speaker 3: See my kids thought it was like a six flags right.
- 15:57Speaker 7: Yeah, so you know you don't have to do anywhere,
- 16:00Speaker 7: you have.
- 16:01Speaker 8: To actually do something that's not controlled. Yeah, chucky river,
- 16:05Speaker 8: I like go under because nice little river, just gentle
- 16:08Speaker 8: and see I feel. I go my wife to test this.
- 16:12Speaker 8: I go NonStop for like fifty weeks, twenty four cents.
- 16:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 16:15Speaker 8: When I get away, I go, I gotta do nothing
- 16:18Speaker 8: that's fair. And as I'm getting older, I definitely got
- 16:20Speaker 8: to do nothing that's fair.
- 16:21Speaker 10: Though.
- 16:22Speaker 8: It's like because that's the old battery, all eight cylinders
- 16:25Speaker 8: aren't working anymore.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 16:26Speaker 8: It's like, exactly, that's what I'm missing. Hey, I mean
- 16:30Speaker 8: everybody right is different. But I love to go up there.
- 16:34Speaker 8: I still like to go back. You go out, Oh,
- 16:37Speaker 8: I love it.
- 16:37Speaker 3: Like we actually went whitewater rafting there. It was a
- 16:40Speaker 3: great experience.
- 16:41Speaker 7: I was in the boat with Mark Johnson and some
- 16:43Speaker 7: other nice It was great Mark and Linda Johnson.
- 16:46Speaker 8: That's a beautiful lake, beautiful scenery.
- 16:49Speaker 3: It was awesome.
- 16:50Speaker 8: I played golf like once up there. It's pretty nice.
- 16:53Speaker 3: But the trees you have.
- 16:54Speaker 8: You haven't been ever to the to the celebrity golf
- 16:58Speaker 8: tournament up there. I've I love watched it several times.
- 17:01Speaker 8: I took my kids. I took my kids, and I
- 17:03Speaker 8: always want to tell the story we first went okay,
- 17:05Speaker 8: we got married in eighty eighty seven. I think it
- 17:08Speaker 8: was you went there and for five dollars they had
- 17:12Speaker 8: the practice runs. You grew up there and there was
- 17:14Speaker 8: like seven or eight of us on each green and
- 17:17Speaker 8: you could talk to Mary Lemieu as it were. Whatever.
- 17:20Speaker 8: Within ten years forget it to take it like crazy,
- 17:24Speaker 8: they literally brought hookers in. I mean, you know it's
- 17:27Speaker 8: about you're setting there. I mean, you know it's I'm serious.
- 17:30Speaker 8: And I can remember MITCHI talking to Jerry Rice on
- 17:32Speaker 8: the elevator. I mean, you mean, you know, it's thinking.
- 17:34Speaker 8: But then it got out of control. It got everything popular.
- 17:38Speaker 8: It was like I think now as I mentioned TV
- 17:41Speaker 8: did that. Yeah, well kudos to NBC. Gonna be a granddad.
- 17:45Speaker 8: Kimmy and Brandon are our extragation. Like I say, Kimmy,
- 17:49Speaker 8: we took her and her the last time we went
- 17:51Speaker 8: to Taller seriously, her and her friend. I want to say,
- 17:54Speaker 8: we're in the seventh grade and we took them and
- 17:56Speaker 8: they got Michael Jordgane's autographed. But you still have a
- 17:59Speaker 8: he had a fight at this aren't fighting because there's
- 18:01Speaker 8: too many people there, and I go, forget it. I
- 18:04Speaker 8: don't need this, so we stopped going.
- 18:06Speaker 7: You know, when I was a kid, we had a
- 18:08Speaker 7: place in Vail and they had a celebrity celebrity golf
- 18:13Speaker 7: tournament there in the summertime, and I just happened to
- 18:15Speaker 7: like wander over the golf golf course.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Bob Hope. Wow, Hope playing golf. That's pretty cool.
- 18:22Speaker 9: So I talked to Bob Hope on the tar back
- 18:25Speaker 9: at easter Wood because he yeah, because he had come
- 18:29Speaker 9: in to do I don't I don't remember a concert
- 18:33Speaker 9: or for something. Uh so that's you know, so you
- 18:38Speaker 9: well I was young then, so you ambushed them, right,
- 18:41Speaker 9: So yeah, you know did that with Lou Holts when
- 18:44Speaker 9: the team fluid, you know one here from markets.
- 18:47Speaker 7: I told you that I did that with Don Nelson.
- 18:49Speaker 7: Pretty embarrassed about this, ambushing him at a steakhouse, the
- 18:53Speaker 7: late great Don Nelson Lake.
- 18:56Speaker 8: Last week.
- 18:57Speaker 3: My wife's like, leave him alone.
- 19:00Speaker 8: Well, funny you She mentioned, like one time we were
- 19:02Speaker 8: eating a tahoe and Joe Morgan was eating right behind us, nice.
- 19:07Speaker 3: Boy in his arm.
- 19:09Speaker 8: No he's flapping his own wigs.
- 19:12Speaker 3: You know.
- 19:12Speaker 8: It's like but you know at that time, people weren't
- 19:14Speaker 8: running up get locked, like I said, they really hadn't
- 19:17Speaker 8: taken off because Okay, So we grew we we grew
- 19:20Speaker 8: up in the in the in this business. So you've
- 19:22Speaker 8: you've been around a lot of of certainly famous athletes
- 19:26Speaker 8: and other famous people. Have you yes, have you ever
- 19:30Speaker 8: been awed by somebody?
- 19:32Speaker 3: One time?
- 19:32Speaker 8: Okay? Who was it?
- 19:33Speaker 3: One time?
- 19:35Speaker 7: The first time I was in a clubhouse when Nolan
- 19:38Speaker 7: Ryan came in to speak, Okay, and that was like,
- 19:41Speaker 7: oh my gosh, he's really larger than life.
- 19:44Speaker 3: Yeah, like he's a big man, he is, and just
- 19:47Speaker 3: I wanted to ask a question, but I knew it
- 19:48Speaker 3: wouldn't come out. That was the only time I was okay, okay.
- 19:51Speaker 8: This was when he was with the Astros.
- 19:53Speaker 3: No, he was an early early ranger.
- 19:55Speaker 7: Okay, Like it was a early ranger And I was
- 19:58Speaker 7: a journalism student and I got.
- 20:00Speaker 3: A press pass.
- 20:01Speaker 8: So you were covering the game?
- 20:02Speaker 7: Well, no, I was I was doing I was working
- 20:06Speaker 7: as a college student set it, but I had a
- 20:08Speaker 7: press back, okay, and so I was in the room.
- 20:11Speaker 3: It was the first time I've been in the Rangers.
- 20:12Speaker 8: Clubhounds a yeah, as a sports rude yeah yeah.
- 20:16Speaker 3: And so when he came in, I was like, yeah,
- 20:18Speaker 3: I'm not gonna ask.
- 20:21Speaker 8: How about you see for anybody funny as you mention
- 20:25Speaker 8: that is. I remember when I first got down here,
- 20:27Speaker 8: i'd have been twenty two years old. I went to
- 20:30Speaker 8: the Houston Open to follow Arnold Palmer round. Because Pennsylvania,
- 20:34Speaker 8: I didn't go and talk to talk to him, but
- 20:36Speaker 8: I was pretty uh, I go like, wow, that's Arnold Palmer,
- 20:39Speaker 8: you know. And then obviously the number one deal. I
- 20:43Speaker 8: was always a Pittsburgh Pirate fan. ROBERTA. Clementi was my hero,
- 20:47Speaker 8: of course, you know he but but Willie Stargel, you
- 20:49Speaker 8: know whatever, the family. I got a pass to go
- 20:52Speaker 8: to the Astros game, and this is when you can
- 20:54Speaker 8: go down and go into the locker room. And so man,
- 20:57Speaker 8: I'm really I'm gonna go. So I go down and
- 21:00Speaker 8: Willie Stargell was sitting there, this naked guy like three
- 21:04Speaker 8: hundred pounds whatever, eating watermelon and smoking. And I walked
- 21:09Speaker 8: a cigarette yeah, and I walked or cigar walk. I go, uh,
- 21:13Speaker 8: I'm Robert, I'm worried out and he's just a yeah.
- 21:19Speaker 8: And basically that was in the walkown. I go, wow,
- 21:22Speaker 8: I did forget about You know, your heroes, they just
- 21:25Speaker 8: they take their pants off one of the time, just
- 21:28Speaker 8: like anybody else, and leave them off for them, how
- 21:30Speaker 8: about you? Uh So a couple of times I wouldn't
- 21:37Speaker 8: say oh, I would say scared. I think I.
- 21:41Speaker 3: I got scared.
- 21:42Speaker 8: Okay, I told this story before, but but I went
- 21:45Speaker 8: to the All Century All Star Game at Finway Park
- 21:48Speaker 8: in Boston. That was the famous game in which Jim
- 21:51Speaker 8: Gray asked Pete Rose on the field if he'd ever
- 21:53Speaker 8: bet on baseball right, and just got excoriated for it.
- 21:57Speaker 8: Wrong place, wrong time. They said right. They had all
- 22:01Speaker 8: of these and they had the All Century team there.
- 22:04Speaker 8: Everybody was there that was alive, right. Ted Williams was there.
- 22:08Speaker 8: He didn't speak to the media, obviously, was in real
- 22:10Speaker 8: good shape. You remember Tony Gwynn helping him onto the
- 22:13Speaker 8: field of Yes, absolutely, okay. Bob Gibson was there, oh wow,
- 22:19Speaker 8: And he was made available to the media, and you
- 22:21Speaker 8: would just go around. They were sitting in a big
- 22:24Speaker 8: room and they weren't necessarily doing group interviews, although there'd
- 22:29Speaker 8: be reporters gathered around Barry Bonds, you know, drew quite
- 22:33Speaker 8: a crowd. Of course, he wasn't real great with the media.
- 22:35Speaker 8: But Bob Gibson was there. Bob Gibson was sitting by himself,
- 22:41Speaker 8: and I go, oh man, this is Bob freaking Gibson.
- 22:45Speaker 3: I got to talk team.
- 22:48Speaker 8: I was the same way. I tried to ask him
- 22:51Speaker 8: a question.
- 22:52Speaker 9: I think I did ask him a question, and he
- 22:56Speaker 9: was treating me like I was digging in against him
- 22:59Speaker 9: at the box, and I just I stayed there about
- 23:05Speaker 9: a minute and I just took my little recorder and
- 23:09Speaker 9: I walked to go talk to somebody else.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Do you know.
- 23:12Speaker 7: I got a similar one when I was the early
- 23:14Speaker 7: Day's Gallison Day News and it was Galliston not at
- 23:16Speaker 7: the Astroidome, and they're playing the Astros, are playing the Dodgers,
- 23:19Speaker 7: and it's like nineteen ninety and Homer Jacobs, the late
- 23:23Speaker 7: great Homer Jacobs, tells me, you might as well try
- 23:25Speaker 7: to do a player feature while you're up there.
- 23:26Speaker 3: So I do all my homework.
- 23:27Speaker 7: I called the Astros pr I's like, hey, how do
- 23:30Speaker 7: I interview players? You got to get there early batting practice,
- 23:32Speaker 7: so playing the Dodgers, and I figured Hey, Kirk Gibson,
- 23:36Speaker 7: why not? And so Kirk Gibson, giant of a man too.
- 23:39Speaker 7: He's in the batting practice and it's early this season.
- 23:41Speaker 7: He's really struggling. But I walk up to him as
- 23:44Speaker 7: he's walking towards the dugout. I said, hey, mister Gibson,
- 23:46Speaker 7: that rusty burs from the Galison Delli and lous yet
- 23:48Speaker 7: a minute, and he looks down at me and he goes,
- 23:50Speaker 7: who the blank are you? And then he starts cursing
- 23:54Speaker 7: me loudly on the on the floor of the astrodom,
- 23:58Speaker 7: screaming at me, if you want to intervie Kirk Gibson,
- 24:01Speaker 7: you better get here blankety blank early.
- 24:03Speaker 3: And I just want to disappear. This is my first
- 24:05Speaker 3: game to ever cover in the Astronome, right.
- 24:08Speaker 7: And so I want to this peer and I feel
- 24:11Speaker 7: this arm around me and it's a I look to
- 24:14Speaker 7: the left and it's a guy.
- 24:15Speaker 3: In Astro's uniform.
- 24:16Speaker 7: It is Casey Candell, you too, the player, Yeah, And
- 24:19Speaker 7: he's off to a great start and he puts his
- 24:23Speaker 7: arm around me, and while Gibson is still walking away,
- 24:25Speaker 7: he goes, hey, you want to interview a guy who's
- 24:28Speaker 7: hitting over three hundred. He want to interview you a
- 24:30Speaker 7: guy who's hitting the buck twenty, and Gibson looks around
- 24:35Speaker 7: him and he just basically glares at him. I proceed
- 24:38Speaker 7: to interview Casey Candell and do the greatest story on
- 24:42Speaker 7: Casey Candell.
- 24:43Speaker 3: I'm prety sure in the history of Mason Baseball.
- 24:46Speaker 7: Many years later, he's a third base coach for the Mariners,
- 24:49Speaker 7: and I go up early to the Rangers game, intentionally
- 24:52Speaker 7: because I want to call him over. He doesn't remember it,
- 24:55Speaker 7: but he goes, I said, I've been telling this story
- 24:58Speaker 7: about you for, like, you know, year, since nineteen ninety
- 25:02Speaker 7: and so people know what a good guy you are.
- 25:04Speaker 3: He goes, I don't remember it, but.
- 25:06Speaker 4: I really appreciate you telling everybody what a good guy him.
- 25:11Speaker 3: I have to go home and tell my wife about that.
- 25:13Speaker 3: That's all.
- 25:15Speaker 9: I had some of those with the astros, you know,
- 25:17Speaker 9: And I had a day Jose Cruz was always great
- 25:20Speaker 9: with the media. And I went up and I was
- 25:23Speaker 9: in charge of doing the pregame interview, and I went
- 25:29Speaker 9: and all the guys knew me, and I went to
- 25:31Speaker 9: him and he just kind of turned and walked away,
- 25:34Speaker 9: and I went, what the heck is that about.
- 25:38Speaker 8: And so.
- 25:40Speaker 9: The next day I see him down there. I go, hey,
- 25:44Speaker 9: you know, and I'm young, what you know, what's going on?
- 25:49Speaker 9: He goes, well, I heard you you said something about
- 25:53Speaker 9: me on the radio, you know. And I said what
- 25:58Speaker 9: what was I.
- 25:59Speaker 8: And I don't remember exactly what it was, and what
- 26:03Speaker 8: was it I was supposed to have said about you?
- 26:05Speaker 8: And he said, oh, that I'm you know, an average
- 26:07Speaker 8: player something it was. It was just stupid.
- 26:11Speaker 9: And I said, first of all, I didn't say it,
- 26:14Speaker 9: you know, I didn't say that whatever it was. He
- 26:19Speaker 9: thought that someone told him I had said I didn't say, which.
- 26:23Speaker 8: Happens a lot in this business. Oh yeah, And he said,
- 26:28Speaker 8: you know, you're a You've always been a good guy.
- 26:31Speaker 8: I'm glad to hear that. And then there was never
- 26:33Speaker 8: any issues again. It's just it's just like the craziest
- 26:39Speaker 8: stupidest thing before. Yeah, and I've got one bore. I
- 26:44Speaker 8: asked you if y'all were in off somebody. Well, probably
- 26:50Speaker 8: the most nervous I've ever been was talking to Brian
- 26:53Speaker 8: Wilson of the Beach Boys. It was my telephone, it
- 26:56Speaker 8: wasn't in person. You know. It's when they had that
- 27:00Speaker 8: movie out that he had been involved with. It ended
- 27:03Speaker 8: up being almost a documentary right telling their story, and
- 27:09Speaker 8: so they made him available to publicize this. And of
- 27:14Speaker 8: course Brian Wilson wasn't great any time. He was unstable
- 27:20Speaker 8: a lot of the time. His wife was there kind
- 27:24Speaker 8: of as a helper. And it's weird on the on
- 27:31Speaker 8: the telephone to begin with, having to try to include
- 27:35Speaker 8: write two people in an interview. Oh yeah, and about
- 27:40Speaker 8: halfway and actually he was pretty good. At about halfway through.
- 27:45Speaker 9: I said, look, I've already asked her a couple of
- 27:48Speaker 9: questions to try to keep her involved. This is Brian
- 27:51Speaker 9: freaking Wilson, and I'm going to talk to him, which
- 27:54Speaker 9: you know, and you're limited in how you know, how
- 27:57Speaker 9: much time do you have and how many questions you asked?
- 28:00Speaker 9: And the interview turned out I think pretty good. It's
- 28:03Speaker 9: I think it's still on our website. But I was
- 28:06Speaker 9: a little nervous talking to for a couple of reasons.
- 28:10Speaker 9: He's a legend, he's a genius, and I knew that
- 28:14Speaker 9: he wasn't exactly.
- 28:16Speaker 8: It wasn't that he was difficult with the media.
- 28:19Speaker 9: He was difficult with everybody and just had a hard
- 28:22Speaker 9: time expressing himself.
- 28:23Speaker 7: So one of the most interesting interviews I ever had
- 28:26Speaker 7: was with Tom Chandler after he's really really sick and
- 28:30Speaker 7: he couldn't really speak anymore. But his wife, I want
- 28:34Speaker 7: to say her was wi Wilma, maybe Wilma. She could
- 28:39Speaker 7: basically interpret his what he was trying to but he
- 28:43Speaker 7: was always and I couldn't really understand what he was
- 28:46Speaker 7: saying at all. But it was just one of those
- 28:49Speaker 7: really interesting interviews that you could tell that she knew
- 28:54Speaker 7: his thoughts. Yeah, because they'd spent fifty some odd years together,
- 29:00Speaker 7: we can tell about the way he'd.
- 29:01Speaker 8: Moved his head in his interest.
- 29:03Speaker 7: It was just like and she would answer for him
- 29:06Speaker 7: and she's like, is that about right, Tom?
- 29:08Speaker 3: Yeah, and he would like not said you know, it
- 29:12Speaker 3: was so interesting. Quotes like that was just interesting. Yeah,
- 29:16Speaker 3: it was really bizarre.
- 29:18Speaker 8: All right, we'll take a break.

- 34:35Speaker 8: hoop layed at five am on a Sunday morning. Everybody's awake. Uh,
- 34:41Speaker 8: they were five am, five am from five to six.
- 34:45Speaker 9: That was right, people were passed out of That was
- 34:47Speaker 9: right after Slide the Family Stone that went on stage
- 34:50Speaker 9: at three point thirty that morning, And that was right
- 34:53Speaker 9: after Janis Joplin, who went on stage at two am.
- 34:56Speaker 8: I had somebodies go to Woodstock and they offered me
- 34:59Speaker 8: to go and I I did no way him about. Yeah.
- 35:05Speaker 9: It is the Writer's Round Table, brought to you by
- 35:07Speaker 9: First Financial Bank and in Tech Rusty Berson, Robert Cessna say,
- 35:11Speaker 9: you've been at practice some I know Alex has been.
- 35:14Speaker 8: It not at all good for you and of the
- 35:16Speaker 8: press comp coming from that's what I missed you last
- 35:19Speaker 8: week at the Elko presser. I was a doctor's appointment.
- 35:24Speaker 8: Oh okay, that was every day. Yeah yeah, So you
- 35:28Speaker 8: know it's just one of those things. It's like somebody
- 35:33Speaker 8: goes I haven't seen you at practice, and I go,
- 35:36Speaker 8: why you know, thank you? You got those first three sessions.
- 35:40Speaker 8: It's one hundred and eight and yourn and eight. You
- 35:42Speaker 8: can't write anything anyway. And I'm a writer, I'm not
- 35:46Speaker 8: a I'm not a coach. I can't tell if the
- 35:47Speaker 8: guy's getting off of those right foot or his left foot.
- 35:50Speaker 8: And uh, everybody looks good. I always have to laugh.
- 35:54Speaker 8: You throw the tape in for any team, it's we
- 35:57Speaker 8: talk about like the NFL exhibition games.
- 36:01Speaker 9: Practice If you're covering, practice is a lot like that,
- 36:05Speaker 9: because you it's really hard. The only thing I ever thought,
- 36:09Speaker 9: cease is maybe you could get a feel of the
- 36:11Speaker 9: athleticism of the team right.
- 36:15Speaker 8: Houses, down and out, how sharp this guy throw the ball?
- 36:18Speaker 8: How to God make if you're missing said practice, you
- 36:21Speaker 8: have a problem, right Yeah, I don't.
- 36:23Speaker 3: Think you can. I mean it's so as I watched
- 36:26Speaker 3: spring practices and spring.
- 36:28Speaker 7: Games for so many years when I was over there
- 36:31Speaker 7: and I had access that other riders didn't, and because
- 36:34Speaker 7: we're pr and just after a while, I was like,
- 36:37Speaker 7: I don't want I'm not going to go over there.
- 36:39Speaker 7: And of course, because I get a good feel about
- 36:42Speaker 7: how great the offense is and the reality is A
- 36:45Speaker 7: and M's defense stinks and you know that they're going
- 36:48Speaker 7: against is nothing, or you know.
- 36:50Speaker 3: The quarterback looks good when he's throwing against.
- 36:52Speaker 7: Air, but there's no pressure on him, and you don't
- 36:56Speaker 7: see that a lot because the quarterback know they're not
- 36:58Speaker 7: going to get hit.
- 36:59Speaker 8: The prices.
- 37:00Speaker 3: I don't know, I just think it's kind of worthless.
- 37:02Speaker 8: The last time that I decided, when I remember all
- 37:06Speaker 8: was and I'll put the whole group of media when
- 37:10Speaker 8: we watched all Mike Sherman. He had, you know, full access.
- 37:14Speaker 8: You watch the whole practice, which means we all had
- 37:16Speaker 8: to go watch practice. And then of course you know
- 37:19Speaker 8: that's agony in itself watching the whole practice. But we
- 37:22Speaker 8: all thought, man, this team is really going to be
- 37:24Speaker 8: good because McGee was going up and down the field
- 37:28Speaker 8: against these guys and oh man, this is gonna be great.
- 37:30Speaker 8: And that didn't turn out there. Well, like, okay, forget
- 37:33Speaker 8: about practice. You can't judge. Hard to tell practice hard
- 37:36Speaker 8: to tell. And nowadays if you take the Indiana approach,
- 37:40Speaker 8: and who wants to get hurt in practice? I see,
- 37:42Speaker 8: like Tennessee's lost to two defensive starters. You don't want
- 37:45Speaker 8: to get your players hurt. So you want to have
- 37:48Speaker 8: these scrimmages, and I get it, you want this physicality,
- 37:51Speaker 8: but the last thing you want to do is be
- 37:53Speaker 8: losing a player. So much different now that it used
- 37:55Speaker 8: to be, right, because you read all the old time
- 37:58Speaker 8: stories and quote the old time coaches. They would just
- 38:01Speaker 8: beat the hell out of their teams, right yep. And
- 38:04Speaker 8: you remember Jackie did that. He had three days and
- 38:07Speaker 8: I was just talking to and he also lost a
- 38:10Speaker 8: game earlier. I was just I was just.
- 38:12Speaker 9: Talking to a former player this last week, and he said,
- 38:16Speaker 9: Jackie has apologized several times. He said, I lost you
- 38:19Speaker 9: three games that year because their legs were so dead
- 38:22Speaker 9: because he was doing three day practices when it was
- 38:24Speaker 9: one hundred and five.
- 38:25Speaker 8: But he learned at the foot of Bear Bryan. He
- 38:28Speaker 8: would learned from Bear right.
- 38:31Speaker 3: RC did the same thing. After they went up to
- 38:33Speaker 3: lost to BYU.
- 38:35Speaker 7: They had three weeks off, oh yeah, and they went
- 38:37Speaker 7: into huge practices overload.
- 38:40Speaker 3: Their next game was at Lafayette, Louisiana.
- 38:43Speaker 8: How did that work up?
- 38:44Speaker 3: Not very well?
- 38:45Speaker 8: Well, it was about eight turnovers.
- 38:47Speaker 7: If I recall that Brandon Stewart played a really good
- 38:50Speaker 7: game because BYU played the worst game.
- 38:52Speaker 8: Quarterback carried the goal post downtown.
- 38:54Speaker 15: That goal post they put it on the media. Guys,
- 38:59Speaker 15: that's when you know you a bad game. Yeah yeah,
- 39:01Speaker 15: but everybody adjusts and I get it. And now you know,
- 39:05Speaker 15: it's so much about weight training. They're in there, you know,
- 39:08Speaker 15: it's what's your body fat?
- 39:09Speaker 8: What are you eating?
- 39:10Speaker 3: What are you doing?
- 39:11Speaker 8: Oh my gosh, what they do and how they know
- 39:15Speaker 8: everything that these guys, how fast they're running, how much
- 39:19Speaker 8: they're sweating during a practice, how much they've replaced, how
- 39:23Speaker 8: many pounds did you lose today?
- 39:26Speaker 3: What did you all? The monsters they have everything.
- 39:29Speaker 8: Incredible, They know everything about these guys.
- 39:33Speaker 3: It is amazing.
- 39:34Speaker 8: But you can't still measure somebody's heart. You can't measure that,
- 39:38Speaker 8: And you can't measure who is you mentioned that under pressure?
- 39:41Speaker 8: Who make that catch? Under who's got to make plays?
- 39:44Speaker 8: Forget about how you look in the first ten minutes
- 39:46Speaker 8: of practice, the game on the line, in the last
- 39:48Speaker 8: four minutes, what do you.
- 39:49Speaker 3: And that's what I go back to.
- 39:51Speaker 7: Last Year's asked me, Hey, how excited are you about
- 39:54Speaker 7: A and M football? And I'm like, well, I think
- 39:57Speaker 7: that the quarterback kind of got exposed in the last
- 39:59Speaker 7: two games, and so I'm a little worried about if
- 40:03Speaker 7: he was really having trouble throwing on the run and
- 40:06Speaker 7: throwing in the pocket with that offensive line, experienced offensive
- 40:09Speaker 7: line last year, what's it going to be like this year?
- 40:11Speaker 7: I mean, and you know, I've asked some former players.
- 40:14Speaker 7: It's like, hey, is this is he capable of making
- 40:17Speaker 7: the progress?
- 40:18Speaker 3: And I don't know. The responsibility kind of mixed, like
- 40:21Speaker 3: I don't know. I mean at this point, is is
- 40:23Speaker 3: he who he is? Or how's the play calling going
- 40:26Speaker 3: to be different? I think that could be.
- 40:27Speaker 8: Really because you have new nuke play.
- 40:30Speaker 3: I wasn't a big fan of Colin Klein and the
- 40:32Speaker 3: way he called plays, So I'm of all.
- 40:35Speaker 8: The things so far that I've heard Elko talk about.
- 40:38Speaker 8: And I agreed one hundred percent when he said, you know,
- 40:42Speaker 8: until his coordinators make the plays with the lights on,
- 40:46Speaker 8: or you know, at eleven o'clock in the morning, you
- 40:48Speaker 8: don't know what they can do because they're going to
- 40:50Speaker 8: look good in these practices. And it's so true, and
- 40:53Speaker 8: it's like getting back what you said, I don't know
- 40:56Speaker 8: how good Wigings is going to be calling plays, but
- 40:59Speaker 8: you're right, obviously, going on the stretch. Klein did not
- 41:01Speaker 8: call good games against Texas in Miami.
- 41:04Speaker 7: I guess what I've heard from all his preseason practices
- 41:07Speaker 7: is how good Antosaka is.
- 41:09Speaker 8: And so he's one of the freaks that Bruce Feldman less,
- 41:12Speaker 8: you know, the top thirty freaks in college football.
- 41:14Speaker 7: You know how the Rangers had the boomstick after cruise.
- 41:17Speaker 7: I think that should be as like a sushi role.
- 41:21Speaker 8: I think they should name something. Yeah, yeah, I think
- 41:23Speaker 8: he needs to make a place. Let's do something first.
- 41:27Speaker 3: That should be ill money, you know.
- 41:29Speaker 8: I think they should wait. You could be his agent.
- 41:31Speaker 8: It's like put a statue up of a player, like
- 41:33Speaker 8: the year after he graduated. I think you always should
- 41:37Speaker 8: wait a little bit. Yeah, yeah, don't you.
- 41:39Speaker 3: He might embarrass you a little bit.
- 41:41Speaker 8: That's what I'm saying.
- 41:41Speaker 16: Yeah, just be out of way the stadium before yeah,
- 41:45Speaker 16: before you know, before we're you know, that's what That's
- 41:49Speaker 16: what preseason all American teams at BABO.
- 41:54Speaker 3: That that was.
- 41:57Speaker 8: Stem in December, right Yeah, No, No, it wasn't Playboy,
- 42:03Speaker 8: Oh no, not a Bob Hope. It was it was
- 42:06Speaker 8: somebody spots.
- 42:07Speaker 3: I just loved how he described all these guys you know.
- 42:10Speaker 8: Oh yeah, yeah, somebody wrote great joke. Don't you think
- 42:13Speaker 8: somebody you know that was so well watched somebody, Oh
- 42:16Speaker 8: my gosh, somebody doesn't come up and do it.
- 42:18Speaker 9: You know what, I couldn't wait for every summer and
- 42:21Speaker 9: I just looked forward to it all summer long. Besides
- 42:24Speaker 9: Texas Football magazine, I looked forward to the College All
- 42:29Speaker 9: Stars against that previous NFL championship.
- 42:34Speaker 8: I loved that day.
- 42:35Speaker 9: It was always played Chicago, Yes it was. I just
- 42:39Speaker 9: I just thought that was the greatest thing in the world.
- 42:42Speaker 9: Now looking back on I was young. Then looking back
- 42:45Speaker 9: on it, it's just kind of the same thing. The
- 42:49Speaker 9: quality probably was terrible.
- 42:50Speaker 7: Man. You know, speaking of Texas football, the highlight of
- 42:54Speaker 7: my life at that point in time was when I
- 42:58Speaker 7: was in high school and got my name and ave
- 43:00Speaker 7: Campbell's text.
- 43:01Speaker 3: I was like, oh man, it's still a ritual. No,
- 43:04Speaker 3: it is.
- 43:04Speaker 8: It still is. That still meets. That's still a big deal.
- 43:07Speaker 3: And I like coach a lot about my forty times.
- 43:13Speaker 8: Were you bigger and faster in Texas football than you
- 43:17Speaker 8: really were?
- 43:17Speaker 7: Oh much much faster, And a lot of coaches do
- 43:21Speaker 7: that on purposely, much like my mom goes, you're really
- 43:25Speaker 7: that fast?
- 43:26Speaker 8: No, that's how fast you when I got the magazine,
- 43:30Speaker 8: No one has to know.
- 43:32Speaker 3: No scouting wise, you know good look good.
- 43:36Speaker 8: It's like so basketball coaches either a intentionally put their
- 43:41Speaker 8: players larger than what they were, or most of the
- 43:45Speaker 8: time when they're filling and out, if a guy was
- 43:48Speaker 8: six five, you'd call him six to two, right, same thing,
- 43:52Speaker 8: same principal. But I like, now, I don't think that
- 43:55Speaker 8: means anything, means any different. High school coaches today do
- 43:59Speaker 8: not put down hydes and your players because they would
- 44:01Speaker 8: don't want the other team to know. And I'm thinking,
- 44:03Speaker 8: like today, the tape you have, you know, they've always
- 44:05Speaker 8: they've always been paranoise. I know, and I go the
- 44:07Speaker 8: tape today. You can see how tall that guy is.
- 44:09Speaker 8: You can see what he went, you can see everything
- 44:11Speaker 8: about him. And why why would you do that? I
- 44:13Speaker 8: don't know. You know, I always laugh and I go,
- 44:15Speaker 8: it's I don't know.
- 44:17Speaker 3: All right, we're gonna definition technology now. It's not like
- 44:21Speaker 3: the old the.
- 44:23Speaker 8: Film I always liked. I can remember when maryl Green
- 44:26Speaker 8: then with holler because they go, we got an inferior
- 44:29Speaker 8: tape from Kaleen. You know, they Saturday morning. They would
- 44:33Speaker 8: your junior high coaches or whatever someone would do. Make
- 44:36Speaker 8: sure they went ahead and tape from way up so
- 44:39Speaker 8: you couldn't see who they really were. Unbelievable. Or the
- 44:42Speaker 8: stadiums are always really dark, right, they're really dark.
- 44:45Speaker 9: It's really hard to tell the numbers on the players.
- 44:48Speaker 9: Sometimes yes, or I'm gonna say that story. All right,
- 44:53Speaker 9: We have to do this by contract.
- 44:55Speaker 8: The Rangers Report has brought to you by the world

- 46:35Speaker 5: Would it be enough?
- 46:36Speaker 19: As the Texas Rangers dropped the series finale against the

- 46:49Speaker 5: Yet another series losses.
- 46:50Speaker 19: They head back home off dates tonight, but at home

- 47:49Speaker 9: I played for three thirty am to four on a
- 47:53Speaker 9: Sunday morning at Woodstock fifty seven years ago. Thanks for
- 47:58Speaker 9: joining us. Russey Berson is here. Robert Sessna is here.
- 48:01Speaker 9: It's the first writers Roundtable.
- 48:03Speaker 8: It's not fall.
- 48:04Speaker 9: I refuse to call it fall at a summer. It's
- 48:06Speaker 9: one hundred and bazillion degrees outside this portion of the show.
- 48:11Speaker 9: And this show is brought to you by Intech and
- 48:13Speaker 9: First Financial Bank. We were talking about, you know, Texas
- 48:18Speaker 9: football was always the start, right, I mean, it was
- 48:21Speaker 9: the bible. It was the start of the season when
- 48:25Speaker 9: everything broke apart, I'll be honest with you, and they
- 48:28Speaker 9: quit sending me free magazines. I haven't seen Texas football
- 48:33Speaker 9: in a little while, and I'm not detigrating them. They
- 48:36Speaker 9: still cover all the high schools, they still cover all
- 48:38Speaker 9: the colleges, but they have to cover like four different
- 48:41Speaker 9: conferences now.
- 48:42Speaker 8: Used to it's just the Southwest Conference.
- 48:45Speaker 7: There's so many outlets now too. We didn't have the
- 48:48Speaker 7: social media. We didn't have anything.
- 48:49Speaker 8: So that was like the start of You didn't have
- 48:51Speaker 8: college football show every day on ESPN either.
- 48:56Speaker 3: No, you didn't have that.
- 48:57Speaker 7: You didn't have textact, you didn't have all those venues.
- 49:01Speaker 7: So Texas football and that was even before Athlons was big.
- 49:05Speaker 7: And so to me, Texas football was just like okay now,
- 49:11Speaker 7: and I would read that thing from cover me too.
- 49:13Speaker 8: I would read every me too.
- 49:15Speaker 7: I remember when there was a kid from Halsham High
- 49:18Speaker 7: and where I went to eventually went to high school.
- 49:20Speaker 3: He played at Rice, and I was like, it was
- 49:22Speaker 3: so cool I got to see Tim Sanders in the
- 49:24Speaker 3: Rice uniform.
- 49:25Speaker 8: In Texas, you couldn't wait for the cover right to
- 49:29Speaker 8: see who is on the cover. Well, what's amazing was
- 49:32Speaker 8: I'll speak as a media person, you wanted to get
- 49:36Speaker 8: that magazine and read as much as you could because
- 49:39Speaker 8: you didn't go out to restaurant and they go, hey, sister,
- 49:41Speaker 8: did you read what they said about so and so?
- 49:43Speaker 8: And you you didn't want to say no, because everybody
- 49:44Speaker 8: reads Texas football, so you wanted to be up what
- 49:47Speaker 8: was said in Texas football because that was gospel for
- 49:50Speaker 8: a lot of people forty fifty years ago. So Dave,
- 49:54Speaker 8: Dave Campbell uh did uh?
- 49:58Speaker 9: Sometimes did color comp Terry on Temple High School football? Okay,
- 50:02Speaker 9: So when Brian and Temple are playing, I'm back doing
- 50:05Speaker 9: the play by play.
- 50:06Speaker 8: This had to be in the nineteen eighties.
- 50:08Speaker 9: And I get there and I'm I'm I'm looking on
- 50:12Speaker 9: the field, I'm going over all the players and I'm
- 50:16Speaker 9: talking to Dave, and he goes, oh, no, all those
- 50:18Speaker 9: numbers are wrong.
- 50:19Speaker 8: Those are all practice jerseys. He goes, those numbers aren't right.
- 50:22Speaker 9: And I'm panicking because I mean, I've memorized the quarterback,
- 50:26Speaker 9: you know, and and all of that, and I'm just
- 50:30Speaker 9: and he must have seen the look on my face
- 50:32Speaker 9: because I'm in a panic. He goes, I'm just, I'm
- 50:35Speaker 9: just with you.
- 50:38Speaker 8: That's good. That's good. That's good, that's good. I love Dave.
- 50:41Speaker 8: Dave was a great guy, was.
- 50:43Speaker 3: An amazing guy.
- 50:44Speaker 7: But some of the I mean, he never evolved in
- 50:47Speaker 7: terms of the game stories. So the game stories were
- 50:50Speaker 7: always like the longest.
- 50:52Speaker 8: Jump them twice on one page to another page, another page.
- 50:56Speaker 3: To another page.
- 50:58Speaker 8: It was awesome.
- 50:58Speaker 7: It was well, you didn't you didn't have to go
- 51:01Speaker 7: to the game to actually feel like you had been
- 51:04Speaker 7: at the game because every play was analyzed by Dave Campbell,
- 51:08Speaker 7: right true, very true.
- 51:10Speaker 3: Yeah, but like that was he was.
- 51:13Speaker 8: He was a godfather of football.
- 51:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 51:15Speaker 13: No.
- 51:16Speaker 7: Another big moment in my career was Dave Campbell's fortieth anniversary.
- 51:20Speaker 7: They came out with Special magazine and I got to
- 51:22Speaker 7: write like a where are they now? On every guy
- 51:26Speaker 7: that had featured for forty years cool in high school.
- 51:29Speaker 7: So I got my pick, and literally I spent all
- 51:32Speaker 7: summer long like doing all these kind of flashbacks on
- 51:36Speaker 7: high school guys. And it was so fun to catch
- 51:38Speaker 7: up with so many different guys from so many different schools.
- 51:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I loved that.
- 51:44Speaker 8: Best high school player you ever saw play personally saw
- 51:48Speaker 8: personally saw oh.
- 51:50Speaker 3: Man come back to me.
- 51:52Speaker 7: So I will say that as a youngster, I got
- 51:56Speaker 7: to see Uh Frasier at Arlington Heights High School, Thomas
- 52:01Speaker 7: Frasier Allison incredible. I got to see Walter Abercrombie in
- 52:05Speaker 7: Waco when he was I want.
- 52:07Speaker 8: To say I saw him too. I was gonna think
- 52:09Speaker 8: it was was that Midway or Univers I think he
- 52:12Speaker 8: was with He wasn't with Midway.
- 52:14Speaker 3: So Man personally covered though. Boy, that's a tough one.
- 52:20Speaker 8: I don't know, it's just so many and I haven't
- 52:22Speaker 8: really thought about that chip That's that's actually a good question. Uh,
- 52:27Speaker 8: you know, for me, it was Eric Dickerson.
- 52:29Speaker 3: You saw him play.
- 52:30Speaker 8: I saw him. I called every game I saw playing,
- 52:34Speaker 8: sixteen games, sawmone all Star. Didn't see him in the season.
- 52:37Speaker 8: So I took uh the guy who was my college roommate.
- 52:42Speaker 8: I said, you need to come watch this guy playing.
- 52:45Speaker 8: And we went to see Lee h for a game.
- 52:47Speaker 8: And I talked to every college coach in America that
- 52:50Speaker 8: year because they were all recruiting Eric Dickerson.
- 52:54Speaker 3: I covered Patrick, Bates and Galveston.
- 52:56Speaker 8: He was Yeah, he was pretty and it's all is
- 52:59Speaker 8: that Michael who?
- 53:00Speaker 3: Which?
- 53:00Speaker 9: Who's the big Adman Adams from the Si Creeks played
- 53:06Speaker 9: in the pros.
- 53:08Speaker 8: Uh? He got worse every year his his freshman year was.
- 53:12Speaker 3: It was.
- 53:15Speaker 8: And and he was one of the He was one
- 53:18Speaker 8: of the best high school players I ever saw. Whose
- 53:21Speaker 8: God believe Ty Warren was one of the best.
- 53:23Speaker 3: Oh yeah, he.
- 53:24Speaker 8: Went with Kanig's daddy, Yes, exactly. What is Adam's first name?
- 53:31Speaker 14: Uh?
- 53:32Speaker 8: But but Dickerson, I think to me was I never
- 53:35Speaker 8: saw Earl Campbell play in high school and I just
- 53:37Speaker 8: saw the film. But I saw Eric Dickerson all fifteen
- 53:40Speaker 8: of his games when they were fifteen, and I won
- 53:43Speaker 8: the state champions Sam Adams forget that. Yeah, yeah.
- 53:50Speaker 3: At Dickinson High School.
- 53:51Speaker 8: Okay, he was really good, yeah, really good.
- 53:54Speaker 3: Okay, he can he can swing it, but they didn't
- 53:56Speaker 3: throw it like he did.
- 53:57Speaker 8: It right, right, I mean, he can just.
- 53:59Speaker 3: Tell he's just a great athlete. But Tommy Frazer.
- 54:02Speaker 8: Running an option, I would have loved to have seen that.
- 54:05Speaker 8: Dickerson was done by most halftimes. I mean, he rarely
- 54:09Speaker 8: played in the second half of most of their games.
- 54:12Speaker 8: He played the state championship game against Rockwall every down.
- 54:17Speaker 8: I believe he scored five touchdowns, including the most unbelievable
- 54:23Speaker 8: run on a swing pass. Would I say every defensive
- 54:27Speaker 8: player touched him on the field. I mean every defensive
- 54:31Speaker 8: player touched him. But he was six three and two
- 54:33Speaker 8: hundred pounds. He was always the biggest player, you know,
- 54:36Speaker 8: for at the time a three eight team, right, or
- 54:39Speaker 8: maybe even two.
- 54:39Speaker 7: As Homer used to tell me the story, it's not football.
- 54:43Speaker 7: But so we would cover all Galaston County schools. And
- 54:46Speaker 7: so he was covering Hitchcock High School in the playoffs
- 54:49Speaker 7: and their tallest player was like maybe five to eleven.
- 54:53Speaker 7: And so again three A high school basketball playoffs and
- 54:57Speaker 7: they match up against San Antonio Cole and they had
- 55:00Speaker 7: a guy named.
- 55:04Speaker 8: He said it was man against against Hernet State. That's
- 55:08Speaker 8: a whole nother discussion. All right, guys, we've killed an
- 55:12Speaker 8: hour at the station's time. I really appreciate it. He's
