- 0:51Speaker 1: the call right here, But let's dive into it with
- 0:54Speaker 1: Jeff Legwald right now. Hey, Leggy, it's it's draft season
- 0:59Speaker 1: and I don't even know if I've ever asked you
- 1:01Speaker 1: this question, and I feel like I've asked you a
- 1:03Speaker 1: thousand questions about the NFL Draft, But this is this
- 1:05Speaker 1: is a really big picture one. Okay, as somebody that
- 1:08Speaker 1: that studies this so closely and appreciates the work that
- 1:12Speaker 1: is done. There is there is an adage that you
- 1:14Speaker 1: will hear this time of year, and I wonder if
- 1:16Speaker 1: you agree with it or not. The draft is a
- 1:19Speaker 1: crap shoot? Is that true?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Now?
- 1:24Speaker 3: I mean, because that would imply you can't be good
- 1:27Speaker 3: at it. Yeah, And I think some teams have proven
- 1:31Speaker 3: over the years and they're better at it, and some
- 1:33Speaker 3: gms are better at it than others are. Now, there
- 1:37Speaker 3: is an element of luck, you know, probably no bigger
- 1:40Speaker 3: example of that then, guy, you know, Tom Brady in
- 1:45Speaker 3: the sixth round, you know, way back, Johnny Unidas playing
- 1:49Speaker 3: semi pro ball, you know, before somebody discovers him. So
- 1:54Speaker 3: you know, there's there is that element of the shooting star,
- 1:58Speaker 3: you know, and all of that. But I to say
- 2:02Speaker 3: it's you know, no one can predict and all of that.
- 2:05Speaker 3: I get that, But some people are better at it
- 2:08Speaker 3: than others, and a lot of it is essentially sticking
- 2:12Speaker 3: to your convictions, you know, Nate that just stick to
- 2:15Speaker 3: the grades you gave guys and don't let it get
- 2:20Speaker 3: away from you. During the draft weekend. I think that's
- 2:23Speaker 3: where the biggest mistakes are made. On the Clock, Jeff.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Interesting piece you guys put together on ESPN dot com yesterday.
- 2:31Speaker 4: Nate and I were diving into it where you talked
- 2:33Speaker 4: about what the teams could use and what they should
- 2:36Speaker 4: use or what they should go after. And your buddy
- 2:38Speaker 4: Jordan Reed had tab the safety. We talked so much
- 2:41Speaker 4: about him and Worry is a guy that could be
- 2:43Speaker 4: really really interesting for the Broncos. How realistic though, do
- 2:48Speaker 4: you think it would be of them looking at him?
- 2:51Speaker 3: Well, you know, I gotta believe he would carry the grade,
- 2:56Speaker 3: you know, if he's still on the board at twenty,
- 2:59Speaker 3: so you have to you have to look at that.
- 3:01Speaker 3: It's just you know, a question of you know, in house,
- 3:06Speaker 3: what's the value of using your first round pick. You know,
- 3:10Speaker 3: you sign two safeties in free agency and back to
- 3:14Speaker 3: back years. You know, are you then going to use
- 3:16Speaker 3: a first round or I would argue that both safeties
- 3:21Speaker 3: came in at a very economical deals for each and
- 3:26Speaker 3: you know, one of them has a pretty strong injury history.
- 3:31Speaker 3: So to me, if he's at twenty, he's worth that pick.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Leggie, what does the Derek Carr injury do to the
- 3:40Speaker 1: first round of this draft? If anything?
- 3:43Speaker 3: You know, then I'm intrigued to see what a lot
- 3:46Speaker 3: of it. You know, what's the Flaco signing do for
- 3:48Speaker 3: the first crowd? What's what's Car's health? Do you know?
- 3:55Speaker 3: I think when I talk to gms and personnel guys
- 3:58Speaker 3: that they look at a lot of these veteran guys
- 4:02Speaker 3: as such short term solutions that if you have a
- 4:06Speaker 3: shot at the quarterback you have graded as a potential
- 4:11Speaker 3: franchise level quarterback, you almost have to take him because
- 4:16Speaker 3: you know, when are you going to be in that
- 4:18Speaker 3: position again? You know, you don't want to be picking
- 4:21Speaker 3: at the top of the board if you're a team
- 4:24Speaker 3: you know in back to back years. Sure it happens
- 4:26Speaker 3: to a lot of teams, but it happens to them
- 4:29Speaker 3: because they don't have a quarterback a lot of the time.
- 4:32Speaker 3: So I think, you know, again from talking to people
- 4:36Speaker 3: over the years, they've always sort of told me, if
- 4:40Speaker 3: you have a shot at the quarterback you believe in
- 4:42Speaker 3: truly believe in nothing, that there's no circumstance that should
- 4:48Speaker 3: keep you from doing it.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Well, put right there, who at the top, particularly in
- 4:53Speaker 1: the top three, is falling in love with Travis Hunter
- 4:55Speaker 1: right now?
- 4:57Speaker 3: I think everybody likes them it's just, you know, do
- 5:00Speaker 3: you need a quarterback too? And and you know, I
- 5:04Speaker 3: don't think if you're a team, you can't take Travis
- 5:07Speaker 3: Hunter unless you have a very definitive plan on what
- 5:10Speaker 3: you're gonna do with them. Is the coaching staff on board,
- 5:13Speaker 3: how's he gonna practice Monday through Friday? All of those
- 5:17Speaker 3: things have to be decided before you put his name in,
- 5:21Speaker 3: you know, to say we're gonna pick him, because if
- 5:24Speaker 3: you don't, you're just leaving yourself open for not making
- 5:28Speaker 3: the most of your pick and of the player. So
- 5:33Speaker 3: everybody I talk to loves him as a prospect. As
- 5:36Speaker 3: a player, everyone's got you know, you know, the feeling
- 5:40Speaker 3: is all of this talk about two way football is
- 5:43Speaker 3: a very short term experiment. So if you when you
- 5:47Speaker 3: take him at the top of the board, you're taking
- 5:49Speaker 3: him for the long term plan and not because he
- 5:53Speaker 3: can play two ways. If that makes sense.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Sure, tell you what before we let you go, because
- 5:57Speaker 4: we got more time to talk to you next week.
- 5:59Speaker 4: And I'm obviously this is kind of the time where
- 6:01Speaker 4: things die down a little bit. You were you were
- 6:03Speaker 4: lamenting as I last saw you. You know, I gotta
- 6:06Speaker 4: go home. I got to work on the board. I
- 6:07Speaker 4: got to break some tie breakers. What do you do
- 6:10Speaker 4: to break tie breakers when it's your top one hundred?
- 6:13Speaker 4: Jeff Leakewald, there's not it. It's like the messier, Mark Messier,
- 6:17Speaker 4: can't go ask somebody else who should get the messier.
- 6:19Speaker 4: It's the messier. So what are you doing to break
- 6:22Speaker 4: tiebreakers when you have them?
- 6:25Speaker 3: Eventually you just sort of surrender and make a call.
- 6:29Speaker 3: But you know, I really try to keep looking at
- 6:33Speaker 3: one more game, you know, one more match up with
- 6:36Speaker 3: you know, if there's a match up with another player
- 6:38Speaker 3: on the board that I like, you know, all of
- 6:41Speaker 3: those things that they have in common, any of that stuff.
- 6:44Speaker 3: I just keep weeding through. But over the years, eventually
- 6:48Speaker 3: you get to the point where you just got to
- 6:49Speaker 3: pick one and and hope you're you're somehow sort of right.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Is it like that in draft rooms?
- 6:57Speaker 3: Yeah? I think it because a lot of I think
- 6:59Speaker 3: that's something they don't talk about publicly, But you know,
- 7:04Speaker 3: on a board, a lot of players are going to
- 7:06Speaker 3: carry the same grade, so it is it is a
- 7:08Speaker 3: tie in a lot of ways, and it is just
- 7:11Speaker 3: working through who do we need the most now of
- 7:15Speaker 3: those grade that you know, that's when you're drafting for
- 7:17Speaker 3: need when you have a tie for grades. You know,
- 7:20Speaker 3: not not any other time, or you shouldn't, but it
- 7:25Speaker 3: is like that, you know, and especially in days two
- 7:28Speaker 3: and three, you're going to have a cluster of players,
- 7:33Speaker 3: and you know, as their pick approaches, you know, two
- 7:36Speaker 3: three picks before them, they're they're picking from the group
- 7:42Speaker 3: of the grades. You know, that's what they're doing right before.
- 7:45Speaker 3: They're on the clock of these three guys, who do
- 7:47Speaker 3: we like with the pick?
- 7:49Speaker 4: And they do, so go ahead, finish the answer.
- 7:53Speaker 3: No, that's what I just said. You know, they do
- 7:55Speaker 3: it on the clock essentially.
- 7:57Speaker 4: All right, real quick, because I feel like you've told
- 7:59Speaker 4: the story before, but I love the story. Can you
- 8:01Speaker 4: tell the Chris Harrys story of how they went in
- 8:04Speaker 4: and approached Fox.
- 8:06Speaker 3: Yeah. The story is is one of the personnel guys
- 8:10Speaker 3: walked in and said, uh, we got three corners, we
- 8:14Speaker 3: got one one slot left among our undrafted and they
- 8:19Speaker 3: had like ten grand of signing bonus money left and
- 8:22Speaker 3: that was it. And they walked in they said, we
- 8:25Speaker 3: got three corners, we got a we got a fast one,
- 8:29Speaker 3: we got a big one, and we got a smart one.
- 8:31Speaker 3: And Fox looked up and said give me the smart one,
- 8:33Speaker 3: and it was Chris Harris.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Boom and the history's changed. How about that, mate?
- 8:38Speaker 1: Well, also, like if you're undrafted, how big and fast
- 8:41Speaker 1: can you really be?
- 8:42Speaker 3: Well, you only have one trait usually if you're an
- 8:48Speaker 3: undrafted guy, you know you're you're tall, that you're not big,
- 8:52Speaker 3: or you're big and you're not tall, or you're not bad.
- 8:54Speaker 3: You know you only get one one thing, or you
- 8:57Speaker 3: would have been picked three days before.
- 8:59Speaker 1: That's a good point right there. Jeff Legwald, everybody ESPN
- 9:03Speaker 1: read Jeff Legwald stuff at espn dot com. Top one
- 9:06Speaker 1: hundred coming soon, Leggy, good work as always, man
- 9:09Speaker 3: Thanks momus, Happy Friday,
