Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:31Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:34Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:36Speaker 1: the party, the britage to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode of Disgraceland to the other. The backyard, to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to
- 0:44Speaker 1: confront the myth, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:47Speaker 1: we're talking about this week's full episode subject part two
- 0:50Speaker 1: of our Temptations story. In the Tammy Terrell Saga, we're
- 0:54Speaker 1: rewinding back to our David Bowie episode previewing our upcoming
- 0:57Speaker 1: story on Motorhead, and we get into your voicemails, text, dms,
- 1:00Speaker 1: and as always a whole lot of rosie. This is
- 1:03Speaker 1: the podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent
- 1:06Speaker 1: thinkers who know that the best history is the history
- 1:09Speaker 1: that gets buried. Disgracelands where I tell the stories they
- 1:11Speaker 1: didn't want told, the kind you'll end up telling to
- 1:13Speaker 1: someone else. All right, disc goes, let's get into it.
- 1:30Speaker 1: The small town I grew up in had a typical
- 1:33Speaker 1: downtown with a lot of different shops. If you needed clothes, hardware,
- 1:38Speaker 1: greeting cards, groceries, whatever, you could get it downtown in
- 1:42Speaker 1: one of the shops on High Street in Clinton, Massachusetts.
- 1:45Speaker 1: This was before big box stores and malls, before malls
- 1:49Speaker 1: were as prevalent, but definitely before big box stores. And
- 1:52Speaker 1: if you didn't want to go to Boston or god forbid, Worcester,
- 1:56Speaker 1: you went, as we said, downtown to get what you needed.
- 2:00Speaker 1: And if you needed something you couldn't buy in stores,
- 2:02Speaker 1: you went to the bad end of High Street where
- 2:04Speaker 1: Papacolis's market was located. It was a little Greek grocery
- 2:08Speaker 1: where for some reason, all the druggies hung out. About
- 2:11Speaker 1: fifty feet to the left of paps as Papacolas's was
- 2:15Speaker 1: referred to, was city hall music. Now, this is where
- 2:19Speaker 1: we went to get our records or cassettes to be
- 2:22Speaker 1: more accurate, and to get a little bit of our
- 2:24Speaker 1: music history education. Now, much later in the year two
- 2:28Speaker 1: thousand and when the movie High Fidelity came out, the
- 2:30Speaker 1: adaptation of Nick Hornby's excellent novel of the same name
- 2:33Speaker 1: starring John Cusack, about a couple of Chicago record store
- 2:37Speaker 1: nerds whose musical tastes are unquestionable but whose ethics have
- 2:42Speaker 1: something to be desired. I felt as I'm sure a
- 2:45Speaker 1: lot of the dudes who I grew up with felt
- 2:48Speaker 1: like I knew those record store nerds that were in
- 2:51Speaker 1: the movie, because in a way, I grew up with
- 2:54Speaker 1: my own small town version. Not in a way I did.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I grew up with my own small town version of
- 2:59Speaker 1: the record store and high fidelity downtown. At City Hall
- 3:02Speaker 1: Music in Clinton, mass the dudes who worked there were older, stoned,
- 3:08Speaker 1: and they didn't care much about selling records. They did
- 3:12Speaker 1: care about talking shit and demonstrating their knowledge of music
- 3:16Speaker 1: history and occasionally dunking on a heavy metal curious fourth
- 3:19Speaker 1: grader and inspiring him at the same time. Now that's
- 3:23Speaker 1: the grade, fourth grade that I was in, I think anyways,
- 3:26Speaker 1: I think that's the grade I was in the first
- 3:28Speaker 1: time I visited City Hall, back right around the time
- 3:31Speaker 1: when it opened, I was with my stepfather, who wasn't
- 3:34Speaker 1: much older than the dudes who worked there, and he
- 3:37Speaker 1: was only a little less burnt out. And that's not
- 3:40Speaker 1: to say that he related to them in any way.
- 3:42Speaker 2: He didn't.
- 3:43Speaker 1: In fact, I can still remember the tension between Joe,
- 3:45Speaker 1: my stepdad, and the city hall guys. I was pretty
- 3:48Speaker 1: sure that that our visit wasn't going to end with
- 3:50Speaker 1: me getting the ACDC record that I wanted, but instead
- 3:53Speaker 1: with Joe, with Joe putting one of those dudes in
- 3:55Speaker 1: the hospital like he nearly did that guy at the
- 3:58Speaker 1: Jay Giles concert who popped my beloe with the lid
- 4:00Speaker 1: end of his cigarette. But that's another story. There was
- 4:03Speaker 1: no violence, just the threat of it, made tangible by
- 4:07Speaker 1: the weird mix of music, snobbery and small town testosterone
- 4:11Speaker 1: floating in the air. Why do you want back in Black?
- 4:14Speaker 1: The dude working there asked me, But what his tone
- 4:16Speaker 1: really said was what kind of asshole wants to buy
- 4:19Speaker 1: that record? I'm not sure I gave the dude an answer,
- 4:23Speaker 1: but I was then asked if i'd heard Highway to
- 4:26Speaker 1: Hell and I had, Well, why didn't I want that record?
- 4:29Speaker 1: I don't fucking know, man, because I'm in the fourth
- 4:31Speaker 1: grade and I just heard he shook me all night long,
- 4:33Speaker 1: and maybe I want to know about fast machines and
- 4:35Speaker 1: keeping the motor clean. I didn't say any of that.
- 4:38Speaker 1: I probably just looked at the dude with the stupid
- 4:40Speaker 1: grin on my face while secretly praying that my stepdad
- 4:43Speaker 1: didn't grab him by his T shirt collar, drag him
- 4:45Speaker 1: over the counter, and beat the dank smell of pod
- 4:48Speaker 1: off of him. But the dude then asked me, and
- 4:50Speaker 1: I remember this clearly, He asked me which ACDC singer
- 4:54Speaker 1: I like best? Which singer the fuck was this dude
- 4:58Speaker 1: talking about which singer? There was only one singer, the
- 5:01Speaker 1: dude who looked like you were construction with Joe my stepdad.
- 5:05Speaker 1: Wait a minute, there was another singer in ACDC before
- 5:08Speaker 1: the back in Black guy. I'll never forget how shocking
- 5:11Speaker 1: this realization was to be, even at that young age.
- 5:15Speaker 1: How had I not known and hold up? The dude died,
- 5:19Speaker 1: the first singer from ACDC died. Tell me more. The
- 5:24Speaker 1: record store dude obliged and told me about Bond Scott
- 5:27Speaker 1: and his premature death. And I'm certain he hinted at
- 5:30Speaker 1: the whispers behind the mystery of Bond's death. Because the
- 5:33Speaker 1: whole story gripped me. I was in Give me all
- 5:38Speaker 1: the fucking rock and roll stories, Oh eighties record store
- 5:41Speaker 1: stage the dude must have picked up on my sincere interest,
- 5:45Speaker 1: because now he was on the other side of the
- 5:47Speaker 1: counter personally escorting me to the ACDC section. I didn't
- 5:51Speaker 1: want back in black, he told me. And sure, you
- 5:53Speaker 1: knew better than what I want. You're older. You have
- 5:55Speaker 1: a leather jacket with cut off sleeves that you wear
- 5:57Speaker 1: over your deno jacket. That's two hole jackets. Well almost,
- 6:01Speaker 1: so you're absolutely the authority here. I was informed that
- 6:04Speaker 1: I didn't want Highway to Hell either. I wanted let
- 6:06Speaker 1: there be rock and hot Damn did I ever want
- 6:09Speaker 1: let there be rock? Of course, I want let there
- 6:11Speaker 1: be rock, dude, whatever you say given to me. At
- 6:15Speaker 1: that moment, I'm convinced my stepdad was even closer to
- 6:19Speaker 1: wrecking my new stoned Obi wan Kenobi record store dude,
- 6:24Speaker 1: even more than he was before now out of spie
- 6:28Speaker 1: or jealousy or whatever, because I'm sure my stepdad thought
- 6:30Speaker 1: that he was bringing me to the record store to
- 6:35Speaker 1: bond with me, And here I am bonding with this
- 6:37Speaker 1: burnout and not him. And what kind of influence was
- 6:39Speaker 1: this burnout going to have on me? An inordinate amount
- 6:42Speaker 1: of influence is the answer. At ACDC sized riff amount
- 6:45Speaker 1: of influence, nearly all the fucking influence. I basically lived
- 6:49Speaker 1: at City Hall Music after that, and so did a
- 6:51Speaker 1: handful of my friends. It's where I first heard the
- 6:53Speaker 1: new record by that guy who quote unquote ripped off
- 6:56Speaker 1: Jim Morrison, and that would be The Cults Ian Atsbury
- 7:00Speaker 1: on The Cult's debut album Love. It's where I caught
- 7:02Speaker 1: my first glimpse of Metallica without Cliff Burton, when the
- 7:05Speaker 1: Garage Day's EP promo poster went up on the wall
- 7:08Speaker 1: at City Hall before the record was even in stock.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure It's where I bought Brett Easton Ellis's
- 7:14Speaker 1: Lesson Zero book, or at least where I borrowed it
- 7:16Speaker 1: off of someone. And it's where I most definitely bought
- 7:19Speaker 1: the soundtrack for Lesson Zero, Slayer and ll cool J
- 7:22Speaker 1: on one album. Of course, give it to me right now.
- 7:26Speaker 1: City Hall Music is literally where I saw my first
- 7:29Speaker 1: compact disc. But more important than all of that, City
- 7:34Speaker 1: Hall Music is where I caught a whiff of my
- 7:35Speaker 1: first rock and roll myth, the death of ACDC singer
- 7:39Speaker 1: Bond Scott. In the whispers of what really happened, I
- 7:44Speaker 1: never figured out if Bond died the way they officially
- 7:47Speaker 1: said he did, in the backseat of a Renault five,
- 7:49Speaker 1: choked to death on his puke after a night of
- 7:52Speaker 1: partying with the dudes from UFO, or if it was
- 7:55Speaker 1: something more nefarious drug dealers, contract killers. Frankly, I'm still
- 7:59Speaker 1: trying to figure out out this story decades later. I'm
- 8:02Speaker 1: nearly done writing our second ACDC episode, and I'm no
- 8:05Speaker 1: closer to a determination on Bond's death than I was
- 8:08Speaker 1: before I even started this podcast. But I'm heavily leaning
- 8:12Speaker 1: toward the official cause of death on this one, despite
- 8:14Speaker 1: the suspicions that have been raised. That said, after two
- 8:19Speaker 1: rounds of research on the band, I still haven't done
- 8:21Speaker 1: enough research around Bond's death, So maybe a third episode.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I don't know. What I do know is that suspicious
- 8:28Speaker 1: rockstar deaths fascinate me. That was one of the questions
- 8:32Speaker 1: we asked last week, and light of the Tammy Terrell
- 8:34Speaker 1: story that we told in this week's Temptations Part two episode,
- 8:38Speaker 1: which musician's death is most suspicious to you? The details
- 8:43Speaker 1: and theories around these suspicious deaths are often too controversial
- 8:48Speaker 1: to talk about here in the wide feed, and I'm
- 8:52Speaker 1: going to use today's exclusive bonus after party section to
- 8:56Speaker 1: dig a little bit deeper into some of these cases.
- 9:00Speaker 1: Sketchy official narrative around the death of Elliott Smith and
- 9:03Speaker 1: the mystery surrounding the murder of Al Jackson, junior drummer
- 9:07Speaker 1: for Booker teen, the mg skuy who played on all
- 9:10Speaker 1: Otis Reddings, hits basically, and a bunch of other incredible music,
- 9:13Speaker 1: and maybe I'll even hit on a couple other mysterious desks.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Big stars Chris Bell comes to mind, rock and roll
- 9:20Speaker 1: pioneer Bobby Fuller. I want to figure out which of
- 9:22Speaker 1: these will make for great Disgraceland episodes, or if in
- 9:26Speaker 1: fact they're just they're just too wild and crazy to
- 9:29Speaker 1: even get into in the wide feed. Some stories are
- 9:32Speaker 1: too strange, too sensitive, too unresolved for a big public
- 9:36Speaker 1: forum like the wide version of this podcast. But they
- 9:39Speaker 1: still matter, and like I said, a couple of them
- 9:41Speaker 1: are going to be waiting for you. In today's exclusive
- 9:44Speaker 1: bonus section of this afterparty. Go to disgrace lampod dot

- 10:56Speaker 1: All right, we're back, and if you don't know what's up,
- 10:57Speaker 1: here's what's happening in disgrace Land this week. We just
- 11:00Speaker 1: released our new episode on the Temptations. That's part two,
- 11:04Speaker 1: which is really a Tammy Terrell story. Coming up next
- 11:07Speaker 1: in your feed. Right after this after party episode, We're
- 11:10Speaker 1: rewinding to our David Bowie episode where if you listen closely,
- 11:14Speaker 1: you'll hear me lose my mind in the E block.
- 11:16Speaker 1: And next week we are hitting all you held Ben
- 11:19Speaker 1: for Leather Rocke rollers with our Motorhead episode. Okay, but
- 11:22Speaker 1: right now you know where I'm at. I'm in the
- 11:24Speaker 1: phone booth. It's the one across the hall, and I'm
- 11:25Speaker 1: hanging on the telephone getting answers to our most pressing
- 11:28Speaker 1: questions from music history, like which musician died most mysteriously,
- 11:34Speaker 1: most suspiciously, what do you guys think? Who do you
- 11:38Speaker 1: want to talk about? Let's hear from Ricardo in the
- 11:41Speaker 1: five to one zero.
- 11:43Speaker 3: Good Jake, My name is Ricardo. I love your show out,
- 11:45Speaker 3: thanks for everything. I've always thought that Donny Hathaway's death
- 11:50Speaker 3: was really suspicious. He was considered the other genius at
- 11:53Speaker 3: Atlantic Records O in Arisa, and he had in history
- 11:57Speaker 3: of mental health issues and then also going on and
- 12:00Speaker 3: off his mads. I think lithium was one of them.
- 12:03Speaker 3: And yeah, he fell out of the seven thirty floor
- 12:07Speaker 3: of the Hotel Essex in New York, and yeah, there's
- 12:11Speaker 3: just something doesn't sit well with me about that. He's
- 12:16Speaker 3: definitely a musical genius. We found piece in his music,
- 12:20Speaker 3: and he's that like my favorite singer, and he died
- 12:25Speaker 3: too young, so I'd love to hear more about that.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Take care.
- 12:29Speaker 1: Thanks, Yes, Ricardo, you are right. Donnie Hathaway absolute genius.
- 12:35Speaker 1: Some mystery around his death, but just such a tragedy, man,
- 12:39Speaker 1: just a It's a sad story and a huge talent.
- 12:42Speaker 1: And we do have an episode on Donnie Hathaway. It's
- 12:45Speaker 1: back in the archive. You can check that out. Appreciate
- 12:48Speaker 1: your call, Ricardo. Hope you doing okay, man, You sound
- 12:50Speaker 1: like you're still grieving the death of Donnie Hathaway. Give
- 12:54Speaker 1: us a call back anytimes. Six one, seven nine, six
- 12:57Speaker 1: six six three eight. That goes for all y'all. You
- 12:59Speaker 1: want to be part of the show seven nine six
- 13:01Speaker 1: six six three eight. You can chime in on our
- 13:04Speaker 1: question of the week. Next week's question of the week.
- 13:06Speaker 1: As we get into the Motorhead episode is a little
- 13:09Speaker 1: bit different. Motorhead was one of the first real concerts
- 13:13Speaker 1: I saw, not the first I saw a handful before,
- 13:15Speaker 1: but Motorhead was one of the first concerts where I
- 13:17Speaker 1: felt truly in danger, even though it's with my dad's
- 13:22Speaker 1: Motorhead and Slayer. In nineteen eighty six, I believe at
- 13:25Speaker 1: the Orpheum in Boston, and I want to know from you, guys.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Question of the week is going to be what was
- 13:30Speaker 1: the first concert you attended? That's it, the first one
- 13:33Speaker 1: that had It doesn't have to be that the very first.
- 13:35Speaker 1: It just has to be the first one that had
- 13:36Speaker 1: a real impact on you. I mentioned the Jay Giles
- 13:40Speaker 1: concert I was at earlier with my stepdad nearly nearly
- 13:45Speaker 1: beat down the dude who popped my balloon. That was
- 13:47Speaker 1: Jay Giles and Zzy Top, I think, and I think
- 13:50Speaker 1: it was probably about five years old Westboro Speedway. Perhaps
- 13:54Speaker 1: I don't remember it. I don't remember it at all,
- 13:57Speaker 1: but I remember that Motorhead concert very clearly. So question
- 14:02Speaker 1: of the week for next week, what was your first
- 14:04Speaker 1: concert that had a huge impact on you? Six one
- 14:06Speaker 1: seven nine oh six sixty six three eight. In light
- 14:09Speaker 1: of our motor Head story, hit us up, call us,
- 14:12Speaker 1: leave us a voicemail like Ricardo, or send us a text.
- 14:15Speaker 1: Let's check out this voicemail here from the six to
- 14:19Speaker 1: seventy eight.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Hey, Jake, this is Adrianna is in Rocky. Call in
- 14:23Speaker 4: from the six seven eight. I actually just calling to
- 14:28Speaker 4: leave you kind of like a recommendation one of my
- 14:31Speaker 4: favorite fans all time favorite bands, which I think you
- 14:36Speaker 4: might already be familiar with, but if not, they're from
- 14:40Speaker 4: Massachusetts and they're around in the nineties and they are
- 14:45Speaker 4: to me like top favorite, one of my favorite top
- 14:50Speaker 4: favorite bands. And to me again, they're like the epitome
- 14:53Speaker 4: of punk rock and they are the Kings of Nothing.
- 14:57Speaker 4: So if you're not familiar with them.
- 15:00Speaker 3: Check him out.
- 15:00Speaker 4: I don't think it'd be disappointed.
- 15:02Speaker 1: All right, later, Adrian, I am resisting doing my soss
- 15:08Speaker 1: Lorne and Brustin vision to Adrian, I'm not going to
- 15:11Speaker 1: do that for you, Okay, ruins my voice. I love
- 15:14Speaker 1: the recommendations. Thank you very much. Always come at me
- 15:18Speaker 1: with whatever you got, and you're going to be very
- 15:22Speaker 1: surprised to hear what I'm about to tell you right now, Adrian.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Not only have I heard of Kings of Nothing, I
- 15:29Speaker 1: was in Kings of Nothing. Okay, I was literally in
- 15:34Speaker 1: the band. Here's the story. Prior to being called Kings
- 15:38Speaker 1: of Nothing. They were the Boston Blackouts, tore Liam Necro, myself,
- 15:46Speaker 1: Justin who I christened Justice, which he didn't like, and
- 15:52Speaker 1: a couple others. I don't even remember it was a
- 15:54Speaker 1: huge fucking band. Anyways, I sang in that band and
- 15:57Speaker 1: played guitar. We did two gigs, two shows. They were epic.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Guy got knifed and thrown out the window of the
- 16:05Speaker 1: causeway for the first show we played. The second show
- 16:10Speaker 1: we played was downstairs at the Middle East. I believe
- 16:13Speaker 1: with the Shods, great great Boston punk band, Lowell punk band.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I should say it'd be more accurate. And I quit
- 16:21Speaker 1: after those two shows. It was way, way too intense.
- 16:28Speaker 1: That's not why I quit. I quit because I wanted
- 16:31Speaker 1: to go back to school and I wanted to I
- 16:33Speaker 1: wanted to focus more on that and less on punk
- 16:38Speaker 1: rock and rock and roll. When I quit, tour moved
- 16:41Speaker 1: from upright base to being the front man and they
- 16:45Speaker 1: went on to have a real career. Prior to that, again,
- 16:50Speaker 1: we were called the Boston Blackouts and then they changed
- 16:53Speaker 1: the name and yeah, that's what happened. We never recorded,
- 16:57Speaker 1: but we did do those two gigs and they were
- 17:01Speaker 1: they were insane. I think there was fire involved. I'm
- 17:03Speaker 1: not even joking. And again guy gets stabbed and thrown
- 17:07Speaker 1: out the window causeway. Chet's Last Call. That's what it
- 17:11Speaker 1: was called prior to that, So there you go, Adrian,
- 17:15Speaker 1: great call. I often forget about that band, and I
- 17:18Speaker 1: shouldn't because it was a real moment in my life.
- 17:20Speaker 1: It was wild. I have tons of wild stories, so
- 17:23Speaker 1: as I'm sure you do as well. All right, let's
- 17:25Speaker 1: move on here. Let's go do some texts from the
- 17:27Speaker 1: nine one nine text in I listened to your pod
- 17:30Speaker 1: on the stagnet culture. This is last week. We talked
- 17:33Speaker 1: about how culture has sort of stopped resetting every ten
- 17:38Speaker 1: years like it used to do. And I'm not going
- 17:41Speaker 1: to go into the whole thing again, but if you
- 17:42Speaker 1: want to listen to it, it's there for you're in
- 17:43Speaker 1: the last after party and the texture here nine one
- 17:46Speaker 1: nine says, Hey, I listened to your pod on the
- 17:47Speaker 1: stagnant culture, and I thought I was just old and
- 17:50Speaker 1: out of touch with the culture until I moved my
- 17:53Speaker 1: son out of his freshman college dorm a year ago.
- 17:56Speaker 1: We're taking down Alison chains and South Park posters, and
- 18:00Speaker 1: I realized my son was having the exact same college
- 18:03Speaker 1: experience I did. I attended college from nineteen ninety two
- 18:07Speaker 1: to nineteen ninety seven, when the last relevant culture shift
- 18:10Speaker 1: was happening. My daughter and I love to find good
- 18:14Speaker 1: new music and have been saved by bands like Mountjoy,
- 18:17Speaker 1: back Seat Lovers, and Big Something. The first time I
- 18:20Speaker 1: saw Backseat Lovers live, I said, this is their generation's
- 18:24Speaker 1: Kurt Cobaine. And the difference is that these great bands
- 18:26Speaker 1: play in front of two thousand people and seem to
- 18:28Speaker 1: make enough money from streaming to stay together. I like
- 18:31Speaker 1: that I can watch these bands in small venues, but
- 18:33Speaker 1: they won't be changing culture until music and media corporations
- 18:37Speaker 1: deem it profitable to back them. And nine one nine
- 18:40Speaker 1: you're spot on. I would add that it's it's kind
- 18:44Speaker 1: of yeah, I don't know if it's that they're I mean,
- 18:47Speaker 1: part of it is they're not getting the big mainstream
- 18:49Speaker 1: push that certainly Nirvana got back in the day. But again,
- 18:53Speaker 1: for all the reasons I said last week, culture and
- 18:56Speaker 1: media are just so different nowadays than they were back then.
- 19:02Speaker 1: And yeah, there's a corporate stranglehold that just it deincentivizes
- 19:08Speaker 1: artists to create the way that artists in the past
- 19:11Speaker 1: were incentivized to create. That's part of it. There's a
- 19:14Speaker 1: lot of stuff going on. But I wanted to read
- 19:17Speaker 1: that text and I believe this miss this guy email
- 19:20Speaker 1: this as well. I wanted to read this because uh,
- 19:23Speaker 1: nine one nine, I just you really perfectly summed up
- 19:28Speaker 1: the whole issue here. You're you're taking down posters from
- 19:31Speaker 1: your your son's dorm and they're the same posters you
- 19:34Speaker 1: had in your dorm on the same artists, same TV shows.
- 19:40Speaker 1: It's wild, just wild. All right. Let's check out same subject,
- 19:44Speaker 1: this one from the seven to four who writes and hey,
- 19:47Speaker 1: I got to disagree with you, Jake. I think Swift,
- 19:50Speaker 1: that'd be Taylor. Swift is changing the culture. You see
- 19:54Speaker 1: the way young women are coming up and being social
- 19:56Speaker 1: media managers for sports teams and pulling the team girl long.
- 20:00Speaker 1: I think Taylor speaks to that. She's certainly changing the
- 20:03Speaker 1: industry with her wrestling control from the labels and doing
- 20:07Speaker 1: what they can to limit that control. And I don't
- 20:09Speaker 1: think there's another person who is. But I do think
- 20:11Speaker 1: Taylor is having a cultural influence, even if the culture
- 20:15Speaker 1: is her HARKing back to the nineties when she grew up.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Just in my opinion, Well, you know, I don't entirely
- 20:22Speaker 1: agree with you here, and I guess say I'm kind
- 20:25Speaker 1: of wrestling with this text and not knowing what to
- 20:29Speaker 1: do with it. Like on the one hand, I like
- 20:31Speaker 1: that I'm being challenged, and I want to acknowledge that.
- 20:33Speaker 1: I don't want to pretend to you guys that this
- 20:36Speaker 1: is just a big chorus of approval here where I
- 20:38Speaker 1: say something and you guys just parrot back what I say.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Oftentimes people disagree or have different takes, and I like that.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I encourage that. I think that's great. I want to
- 20:46Speaker 1: think through these things critically with you. But at the
- 20:49Speaker 1: same time, I don't want to sit here and be
- 20:51Speaker 1: arguing into the void when this person doesn't have a
- 20:53Speaker 1: forum right now to defend their argument. But I'll just
- 20:57Speaker 1: say I don't. I don't think Taylor Swift is changing
- 21:02Speaker 1: the culture. She's certainly influential when it comes to the
- 21:07Speaker 1: business side of it and record sales. I don't see
- 21:10Speaker 1: a lot of people beyond her sort of immediate demographic
- 21:15Speaker 1: of young women behaving any differently because of Taylor Swift.
- 21:19Speaker 1: And as far as as far as her getting her
- 21:22Speaker 1: her songs back from the labels and ownership, that's that's
- 21:29Speaker 1: not anything new, and it really only happens to major artists,
- 21:34Speaker 1: huge artists like this. Bruce Springsteen went through something very
- 21:38Speaker 1: similar once he became super successful. But it's not like
- 21:42Speaker 1: in Taylor's resting back control of her music that it
- 21:47Speaker 1: has created a sort of watershed moment for other artists
- 21:51Speaker 1: to do so. It hasn't. She's able to do it
- 21:53Speaker 1: because she is a she's an anomaly, She's an aberration.
- 21:56Speaker 1: She's bigger than anyone else that said I, you know,
- 22:01Speaker 1: you know hit me back here seven seven two four.
- 22:04Speaker 1: I do take a lot of what you're saying here.
- 22:05Speaker 1: I do think she is influential on women coming up,
- 22:09Speaker 1: like you say, but I don't entirely agree with your point.
- 22:12Speaker 1: Any of y'all want to argue with me or just
- 22:14Speaker 1: talk about whatever you want to talk about six one
- 22:16Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight voicemail and text,
- 22:20Speaker 1: and of course you can. You can always DM me.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I might hit you back on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook at
- 22:25Speaker 1: disgrace lampod and you can email me Disgrace Lampod at
- 22:28Speaker 1: gmail dot com. Surefire way to get my attention and
- 22:31Speaker 1: get a response immediately. Hit me up on Patreon in
- 22:35Speaker 1: the chat. Don't direct message me on Patreon. Their messaging
- 22:38Speaker 1: app sucks and it takes forever to load, and I
- 22:41Speaker 1: seldom use it. So if you have messaged me there
- 22:44Speaker 1: and I haven't responded, that's why. But just just publicly
- 22:48Speaker 1: call me out in the chat and ask me whatever
- 22:50Speaker 1: you want, and I'll get in there with you. We'll
- 22:52Speaker 1: chop it up, all right, Gonna chop it up with
- 22:55Speaker 1: you on the other side of this break right now,
- 22:57Speaker 1: back in a flash, all right, my people, as we
- 23:13Speaker 1: are back, listen, Disgraceland isn't the only place we play
- 23:16Speaker 1: every week, okay. We also play over in Hollywood Land,
- 23:20Speaker 1: tons of episodes from the Annex of Hollywood and true
- 23:23Speaker 1: crime on your favorite actresses and actors and directors. And
- 23:27Speaker 1: in addition to the fully scripted episodes that we're releasing
- 23:30Speaker 1: over there that are going to feel and sound a
- 23:32Speaker 1: lot like Disgraceland episodes, just with slightly different subject matter,
- 23:36Speaker 1: we also do these rap party bonus episodes. But it's
- 23:40Speaker 1: not just me and the mic like it is here
- 23:42Speaker 1: in the after Party. It's me and Zeth Lundy and
- 23:44Speaker 1: people are loving it. We're getting a lot of great feedback.
- 23:46Speaker 1: The show is growing every week. Zeth is really crushing
- 23:50Speaker 1: in it over there. Zeth is more of a movie
- 23:54Speaker 1: head than I am. He knows more about movie history
- 23:57Speaker 1: than I do I think he was a film school nerd.
- 24:00Speaker 1: I could be wrong about that. There's a lot of
- 24:02Speaker 1: mystery and Zeth's background. I don't ask. You know, things
- 24:05Speaker 1: get said and I just kind of go, okay. You know,
- 24:07Speaker 1: there's some weird run in with John Mayer from his path.
- 24:10Speaker 1: You know, you can ask them. I'm not gonna. I'm
- 24:12Speaker 1: day It's not for me anyhow. Matt, let's let's give
- 24:18Speaker 1: the people a little a little taste of the Rap Party.
- 24:21Speaker 1: Show those who have not yet subscribed to Hollywood Land
- 24:23Speaker 1: what they're missing. In addition to the full episodes. Like
- 24:26Speaker 1: I said, you get these Rap Party episodes. And then, guys,
- 24:30Speaker 1: after you listen to this clip, I want you to
- 24:31Speaker 1: go to hollywood Land and Apple Podcasts or Spotify or
- 24:34Speaker 1: iHeart or the iHeart app or wherever you get your podcasts,
- 24:37Speaker 1: and I want you to subscribe to hollywood Land. All right, Matt,
- 24:41Speaker 1: give them that clip.
- 24:42Speaker 5: Death Lundy here with Jake Brennan coming at you with
- 24:45Speaker 5: the part of the show we call for your consideration.
- 24:48Speaker 5: This is where Jake and I give you music and
- 24:50Speaker 5: movie recommendations. But the twist is that they are recommendations
- 24:54Speaker 5: inspired by the subject from our full episode of Hollywood
- 24:57Speaker 5: Land this week. So, look, I could easily recommend three
- 25:00Speaker 5: great Harrison Ford movies right off the top of my head,
- 25:02Speaker 5: but like, what's the point because you've all seen them,
- 25:05Speaker 5: you all you're gonna go nod your heads and be like, Yep,
- 25:07Speaker 5: that's great, that's great. What I want to recommend and
- 25:09Speaker 5: what I want to talk about are three great movies
- 25:12Speaker 5: that Harrison Ford turned down, three great roles that he
- 25:16Speaker 5: movies he was not in. And Jake, I want to
- 25:18Speaker 5: litigate with you right here in real time whether or
- 25:21Speaker 5: not those movies would have been better Okay with Harrison
- 25:24Speaker 5: Ford in them?
- 25:24Speaker 1: Okay, love this all right?
- 25:26Speaker 5: So number one JFK nineteen ninety one, directed by Oliver Stone.
- 25:32Speaker 5: So Harrison Ford was up for the role of Jim Garrison,
- 25:34Speaker 5: which of course went to Kevin Costner. What do you
- 25:37Speaker 5: think about this movie with Harrison Ford as Jim Garrison.
- 25:40Speaker 1: I can't stop thinking of Harrison Ford and Kevin Bacon's
- 25:45Speaker 1: you a five looking piece of meat, miss of Gaston. Yeah, damn,
- 25:52Speaker 1: I love Kevin Costner in this role. Yeah, it's a
- 25:55Speaker 1: defining role for Kevin cost A Greed. I think it's
- 25:58Speaker 1: his best role. Actually, I think it's better than Field
- 26:00Speaker 1: of Dreams, better than The Untouchables. But Harrison Ford, Wow,
- 26:05Speaker 1: he would have He would have brought a kind of
- 26:08Speaker 1: like like a meanness to it almost, you know, like
- 26:11Speaker 1: a like a pissiness. Yeah, uh yeah, he.
- 26:14Speaker 5: Would have been much more cynical. I think what works
- 26:16Speaker 5: for Kevin Costner is that there's something so like green
- 26:19Speaker 5: and aw shucks about him. Yeah know what I mean?
- 26:21Speaker 5: That I think really works as his character has sort
- 26:23Speaker 5: of plunged into this world of conspiracies and stuff, and
- 26:27Speaker 5: it would have it just would have been different with
- 26:28Speaker 5: Harrison Ford.
- 26:29Speaker 1: I think Harrison Ford would have been too cynical and
- 26:32Speaker 1: it wouldn't have It wouldn't have scanned right, and it
- 26:34Speaker 1: probably wouldn't have had the impact it had. So for that,
- 26:38Speaker 1: even though I may have enjoyed Harrison Ford in it
- 26:41Speaker 1: more than Kevin Costner, I think the role in the
- 26:43Speaker 1: movie is better with Costner. Yeah, agreed. That's Hollywood Land.
- 26:47Speaker 1: You heard it here.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Uh you know, you know the drill.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Go to Hollywood Land on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, wherever you
- 26:53Speaker 1: get your podcasts, and subscribe so you do not miss
- 26:56Speaker 1: any of that hot Hollywood and true crime action the ze,
- 27:00Speaker 1: Lundy and myself are given to you every week. All right,
- 27:02Speaker 1: that's Hollywood Land on whatever podcast app you use. Make
- 27:06Speaker 1: sure you are subscribed already.
- 27:07Speaker 2: Then it's time.
- 27:08Speaker 1: Now you know what time it is. It's time for
- 27:10Speaker 1: the sixty second sports rant and under thirty seconds, brought
- 27:12Speaker 1: to you again by our friends of five Hour Energy
- 27:14Speaker 1: in their new confetti Craze flavor. It tastes just like
- 27:17Speaker 1: birthday cake with a vanilla and buttery flavor to let
- 27:20Speaker 1: you be unapologetically extra and unstoppably energized. Head to your
- 27:24Speaker 1: local retailer www dot five hour Energy dot com or
- 27:27Speaker 1: Amazon to order yours today. Listen, speaking of today, Matt,
- 27:32Speaker 1: give me the buzzer go ahead. The NFL season is
- 27:35Speaker 1: upon us. It's coming. The season opens on September fourth
- 27:39Speaker 1: with the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Dallas Cowboys.
- 27:43Speaker 1: Those of you who don't know, Cowboys are my other team. Okay,
- 27:46Speaker 1: I'm a Pats fan, always been a Cowboys fan as well,
- 27:49Speaker 1: but Pats fan first. Anyways, it doesn't matter. This also
- 27:53Speaker 1: means with the start of the NFL season in the
- 27:55Speaker 1: next few weeks, I'll have two fantasy football drafts. That
- 27:58Speaker 1: I'll have to prepare for. I had to say I'm
- 28:01Speaker 1: not happy about it. Who else plays fantasy football like
- 28:04Speaker 1: I do, strictly out of social fomo? Okay? Who else
- 28:07Speaker 1: plays out of fomo? I don't like fantasy football. I
- 28:10Speaker 1: love it, but I also hate it. I don't like
- 28:12Speaker 1: playing it until I do. I don't like talking about
- 28:14Speaker 1: it unless I'm on a tear that week, and I
- 28:16Speaker 1: don't like thinking about it. Yet here I am thinking
- 28:18Speaker 1: about it and talking to you guys about it. Understand this.
- 28:21Speaker 1: I'm a dude who doesn't even like looking at his phone.
- 28:24Speaker 1: If it weren't for me making my living in digital media,
- 28:26Speaker 1: I would be totally off the grid. But dude, what
- 28:29Speaker 1: pick am I going to get in my snake draft?
- 28:31Speaker 1: All Right? Fantasy football will eat you alive, is what
- 28:34Speaker 1: I'm saying. If you're naturally competitive like I am, it'll
- 28:36Speaker 1: ruin your fall and your early winter. And I can't
- 28:39Speaker 1: let my sisters beat me, and in my other league,
- 28:42Speaker 1: I can't let my father in law think I'm an
- 28:43Speaker 1: ass hat homer who, yeah, maybe once drafted a Patriots
- 28:45Speaker 1: kicker in the third round. I can't lose, man, That's
- 28:48Speaker 1: what I'm saying. Yet I couldn't give a shit either.
- 28:51Speaker 1: That's the other part of this. I like the games
- 28:54Speaker 1: as they were meant to be played. I don't like
- 28:57Speaker 1: watching for fantasy points on Sunday. I like defense over offense.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I like pounding ground games in illegal hits that were
- 29:06Speaker 1: legal in every decade except for this one. But still
- 29:09Speaker 1: I play fantasy football because I'm a sucker. Man any
- 29:12Speaker 1: other suckers out there? Who else feels like fantasy football
- 29:15Speaker 1: is a blessing and a curse? I don't know, but
- 29:17Speaker 1: I do know. I'll be playing this fall for what
- 29:19Speaker 1: will be my thirteenth season in one league and fourth
- 29:21Speaker 1: or fifth in Thegether. I can't even keep track I
- 29:24Speaker 1: started that other league. I don't even want to be
- 29:26Speaker 1: in it, but yeah, I can't not be in it.
- 29:27Speaker 1: I want to be in it. I don't want to
- 29:29Speaker 1: miss anything. Okay, what the hell is wrong with Matt?
- 29:31Speaker 1: How'd I do well? Jake?
- 29:33Speaker 6: I got to say, you didn't make it in under
- 29:37Speaker 6: thirty seconds, but I.
- 29:40Speaker 1: Really think we should put that aside.
- 29:43Speaker 6: This week's ramp really seemed like a cry for help,
- 29:46Speaker 6: and I think we should put our focus on getting
- 29:49Speaker 6: you the help that you need. So maybe we can,
- 29:52Speaker 6: you know, sit down with a couple five Hour Energies
- 29:55Speaker 6: and talk about that after the show.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Okay, buddy, I knew I went too long. I knew it.
- 30:00Speaker 1: I knew it. I couldn't help myself. I'll try harder
- 30:03Speaker 1: next week.
- 30:04Speaker 4: All right.
- 30:05Speaker 1: That was the Sports ran sponsored by Five Hour Energies
- 30:08Speaker 1: New Confetti Craze Flavor Unleash your party vibes with as
- 30:11Speaker 1: much caffeine as your favorite twelve ounce fancy coffee, but
- 30:14Speaker 1: with zero sugar and zero crash. Available in stores on
- 30:17Speaker 1: Amazon or at www dot five hour energy dot com. So,
- 30:21Speaker 1: speaking of the football, last year, we did a banger
- 30:25Speaker 1: episode on the super suspicious death of NFL owner Carol Rosenbloom.
- 30:31Speaker 1: But this week we're talking about the suspicious deaths of
- 30:34Speaker 1: rock stars. In the bonus section of the after Party.
- 30:36Speaker 1: As I mentioned earlier, I'm dipping into Elliott Smith and
- 30:39Speaker 1: Al Jackson Junior, two musicians whose deaths are steeped in
- 30:43Speaker 1: mystery and conflicting narratives. These are stories I wanted to
- 30:46Speaker 1: tell for years, guys, but they've always felt too sketchy,
- 30:50Speaker 1: too unresolved, too controversial to fully dive into in the
- 30:54Speaker 1: main feed. But here's the thing. We don't need to
- 30:58Speaker 1: wait for Chasm or who are over the fuck else
- 31:00Speaker 1: to give us the studio algorithm approved lay mass versions
- 31:04Speaker 1: of these stories. We can start digging in now, because
- 31:07Speaker 1: you're as interested in this stuff as I am. You're
- 31:10Speaker 1: as interested in separating the noise from the truth as
- 31:12Speaker 1: I am. You're obsessed like me, and so this bonus
- 31:15Speaker 1: section is for you. It's not a full deep dive.
- 31:18Speaker 1: We're dipping our toes into these stories for now, maybe
- 31:22Speaker 1: more later, probably more later. I don't know. I haven't
- 31:24Speaker 1: figured it out, but right now you can get some
- 31:26Speaker 1: of this hot Elliott Smith weirdness, some of this Al
- 31:29Speaker 1: Jackson Junior conspiracy or curiosity. I should say, go to
- 31:34Speaker 1: disgrayslampod dot com slash membership to become an all access
- 31:37Speaker 1: member and unlock this bonus episode, plus ad free episodes,
- 31:41Speaker 1: extra full episodes, and a direct line to this mission
- 31:45Speaker 1: that we are all on all for just five bucks
- 31:47Speaker 1: a month less if you sign up for the year,
- 31:49Speaker 1: and like I said, that price guys, like I said,
- 31:50Speaker 1: it's going up soon, but if you join now, you're
- 31:53Speaker 1: locked in for life at just five bucks a month.
- 31:54Speaker 1: We reward the early Diggers the early discos.
- 31:58Speaker 2: All right, all right, we are back.
- 32:17Speaker 1: Thanks for joining me on another wild ride here in
- 32:20Speaker 1: the After Party mentioned a ton of artists in this episode,
- 32:23Speaker 1: Donnie Hathaway, Taylor Swift, Metallica even not an artist, but
- 32:28Speaker 1: we mentioned that NFL story. We have episodes on all
- 32:32Speaker 1: of these stories, and Matt is going to provide the
- 32:36Speaker 1: episode notes in the show notes section of the after
- 32:38Speaker 1: Party for you to easily find these stories in our
- 32:41Speaker 1: massive archive of over two hundred and thirty five episodes
- 32:46Speaker 1: full episodes. I don't even know how many we have anymore.
- 32:48Speaker 1: How's that for crazy? We may have had some weird
- 32:51Speaker 1: milestone we passed and I'm not even aware. We just
- 32:53Speaker 1: keep making it for you, guys. So let's recap, all right.
- 32:55Speaker 1: Number one this week's full episode The Temptations Part two,
- 32:58Speaker 1: that's available for you right now. Number two. Coming up
- 33:01Speaker 1: next is our rewind episode on David Bowie and My
- 33:04Speaker 1: freak out in a moon Age day Dream.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Number three up next week our episode on Motorhead. Number
- 33:09Speaker 1: four out in Hollywood Land right now is our story
- 33:12Speaker 1: on Harrison four Number five six one seven nine oh
- 33:14Speaker 1: six six six three eight voicemail and text get at me.
- 33:18Speaker 1: You can DM me at disgrace Lampod on Instagram, TikTok,
- 33:21Speaker 1: Facebook and Xdisgracelampod at gmail dot com to email me.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Your voice helps uncover what cup buried. Your takes propel
- 33:28Speaker 1: me into the dark corners of music history. So keep
- 33:29Speaker 1: them coming. Dig, baby, Dig, now that the night is over.
- 33:32Speaker 1: As the man once said, Number six, do not forget
- 33:34Speaker 1: this goes. This isn't just content. It's a community, a
- 33:37Speaker 1: community of the obsessed. No one cares about music, books,
- 33:40Speaker 1: records in the crime and grime that ties them all together,
- 33:42Speaker 1: like you do. And well that's a disgrace, all right.
- 33:45Speaker 1: Tammy Terrell, featured in this week's part two episode on
- 33:47Speaker 1: the Temptations, died on March sixteenth, nineteen seventy. Here's what
- 33:52Speaker 1: America was listening to that week, according to the Billboard Charts.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Number one Bridge Over Troubled Water, Simon and Garf Uncle
- 34:00Speaker 1: last week one peak position one weeks on chart six.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Number two traveling Band Full Stop The Range, Credence Clearwater
- 34:11Speaker 1: Revival last week to peak position weeks on chart seven.
- 34:17Speaker 1: Number three on the Rapper Jaggers last week weeks on
- 34:21Speaker 1: number one, peak position number weeks on chart seven, he said,
- 34:26Speaker 1: number four Rainy Night in Georgia. Rubber necking week last
- 34:31Speaker 1: week number one peak position. Give me four weeks on chart.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Test clear number five ma Bella last week six. Quit
- 34:52Speaker 1: talking and start mixing.
