- 0:07Howdy Star Gazers and welcome to this episode
- 0:10of Star Trails. I'm Drew and I'll be your guide
- 0:13to the night sky for the week starting March
- 0:1630th through April 5th. We've just entered galaxy
- 0:21season, that time of year when astronomers often
- 0:24set their sights on deep sky objects. We'll cover
- 0:28some potential targets and offer up viewing tips
- 0:31later in the show, but now let's see what's happening
- 0:34closer to home. We begin the week with a waxing
- 0:39crescent moon, barely noticeable at just 2 %
- 0:42illumination. It grows gradually brighter each
- 0:46night, reaching first quarter moon by week's
- 0:49end. The moon is worth keeping an eye on, as
- 0:51it's going to make a couple of lovely appearances
- 0:54near planets this week. More on that in a moment.
- 0:58Now, let's talk about the planets. Venus is back,
- 1:02but not where you might expect. It's now the
- 1:05morning star, shining brilliantly in the eastern
- 1:08sky before sunrise. By April 1st, it'll be rising
- 1:12about an hour before the sun. Through your telescope,
- 1:16you'll spot it as a slender crescent, but even
- 1:19to the naked eye, it's a spectacular, dazzling
- 1:22sight. Mars is still hanging out in the evening
- 1:26sky, tucked away in the constellation Gemini.
- 1:30You'll spot it as a reddish point of light. And
- 1:33if you're looking for a great viewing moment,
- 1:36circle April the 5th on your calendar. That night,
- 1:39the first quarter moon will cozy up near Mars,
- 1:43right alongside the twin stars Castor and Pollux,
- 1:47creating a beautiful gathering in the western
- 1:49sky after sunset. Jupiter is still shining brightly
- 1:53in Taurus. Look for it on April 2 when the waxing
- 1:58crescent moon will be close to the king of planets.
- 2:02Look toward the western sky just after sunset
- 2:04for that eye -catching conjunction. Saturn, Mercury,
- 2:09and Neptune are all in the sun's glare, so you
- 2:13won't spot them this week. But for an extra challenge,
- 2:17telescope and binocular astronomers may want
- 2:20to hunt down Uranus. It's visible at magnitude
- 2:245 .8, about 7 to 8 degrees below the Pleiades
- 2:28near Taurus. As always, consult with a star chart
- 2:32or app for the exact location. Tonight we're
- 2:41heading into one of the most exciting times of
- 2:43the year for deep sky observers Galaxy season
- 2:47this stretch of springtime nights typically from
- 2:51late March to early May Offers some of the best
- 2:54views of distant galaxies, especially for those
- 2:57of us in the northern hemisphere During galaxy
- 3:01season Earth's position and its orbit around
- 3:03the Sun tilts our view away from the bright star
- 3:07-packed plane of the Milky Way With less interference
- 3:11from the Milky Way's dense core, we're treated
- 3:14to some of the clearest and darkest views of
- 3:16the universe beyond our own galaxy. So let's
- 3:20explore some galaxies that haven't been getting
- 3:23the spotlight lately, but absolutely deserve
- 3:27some attention. Here's what to point your telescope
- 3:30at this galaxy season. and the Cigar Galaxy,
- 3:39M82. Located in the constellation Ursa Major,
- 3:44these two galaxies make an intriguing pair. M81
- 3:48is a grand spiral galaxy, while M82 is a striking
- 3:53elongated starburst galaxy. They're just about
- 3:5712 million light years away from us and show
- 4:00up in smaller telescopes as faint patches of
- 4:03light. M101, the pinwheel galaxy. Also located
- 4:10in Ursa Major, M101 is a gorgeous face -on spiral
- 4:15galaxy. It's known for its large size and distinct
- 4:19spiral arms. Under dark skies, with a 6 -inch
- 4:24or larger telescope, you can start to make out
- 4:27some of its delicate structure. It's approximately
- 4:3021 million light -years away. Number three, M51,
- 4:36the Whirlpool Galaxy. Found in the constellation
- 4:40Canes Venetici, the Whirlpool Galaxy is a stunning
- 4:44interacting galaxy that's just about 31 million
- 4:48light years away. What's amazing about this galaxy
- 4:52is that with a telescope of six inches or more,
- 4:55you can actually see hints of its spiral arms
- 4:58and even its smaller companion galaxy. NGC 5195,
- 5:05seemingly connected by a bridge of stars. Number
- 5:09four on our list, NGC 4565, the Needle Galaxy.
- 5:17Located in the constellation Coma Berenices,
- 5:20the Needle Galaxy is a spectacular edge -on spiral
- 5:24galaxy. Its slender elongated shape makes it
- 5:28stand out. With a large telescope, you can catch
- 5:31a clear view of its bright central bulge bisected
- 5:35by a dark dust lane. It's around 40 million light
- 5:39years away. And finally, number five, M106, the
- 5:45splinter galaxy. Also in the constellation Canes
- 5:49Venetici, you'll find M106, a bright and fairly
- 5:54large spiral galaxy that's about 22 million light
- 5:58years away. Its bright core is easy to spot even
- 6:02with a small telescope, and if you have a larger
- 6:05scope, you might even notice some of its spiral
- 6:08structure. To get the best view of all these
- 6:12galaxies, use a telescope with at least six to
- 6:15eight inches of aperture. Make sure you're observing
- 6:18from a dark sky site with minimal light pollution.
- 6:22Using averted vision that's slightly looking
- 6:25off to the side of the object, can help make
- 6:28faint details more noticeable. If you're using
- 6:32binoculars, you'll be able to catch M81 and M82,
- 6:36but most of these galaxies will require a telescope.
- 6:41Galaxies are always popular with astrophotographers,
- 6:44and for good reason. Keep in mind, most galaxies
- 6:48will appear as a faint grayish smudge against
- 6:51the darkness. Astrophotographers have the unique
- 6:55advantage of using long -exposure photography
- 6:58to reveal incredible details that our eyes simply
- 7:01can't capture in real time. When a camera's sensor
- 7:05collects light over minutes or even hours, it
- 7:09brings out the intricate structure of galaxies.
- 7:12For example, the glowing spiral arms of the pinwheel
- 7:16galaxy, the dust lanes in the needle galaxy,
- 7:19or the swirling interactions of the Whirlpool
- 7:22galaxy and its companion. Astrophotography also
- 7:27allows us to capture the colors of these galaxies,
- 7:31from the reddish glow of star -forming regions
- 7:34to the bluish hues of hot young stars. These
- 7:38details provide important information about the
- 7:41galaxy's composition, age, and evolution. For
- 7:45budding astrophotographers, galaxy season is
- 7:49a fantastic time to push your equipment's capabilities.
- 7:53Even a modest setup with a DSLR or mirrorless
- 7:56camera and a decent lens on a tracking mount
- 7:59can produce some jaw -dropping images. And with
- 8:03more advanced gear, like dedicated astro cameras
- 8:06and larger telescopes, you can create breathtaking,
- 8:10high -resolution views of these distant worlds.
- 8:13So, if you've been thinking about trying your
- 8:16hand at astrophotography, there's no better time
- 8:19than right now. Also, we can't forget the Messier
- 8:23Marathon. Attempting to view all 110 Messier
- 8:28objects in a single night is a fantastic challenge
- 8:31during galaxy season. Many of the objects on
- 8:34the list are galaxies, making this time of year
- 8:37perfect to run the marathon. Try to complete
- 8:40the challenge when skies are darkest, like during
- 8:43the April new moon. Many of these objects can
- 8:47be viewed with a cheap pair of binoculars. The
- 8:50Astronomical League publishes an excellent field
- 8:53guide for viewing all the Messier objects. I'll
