- 0:00Speaker 1: Gooday, and welcome to Fox Crickets follow on podcast. Some
- 0:03Speaker 1: one names Nick Savage. I'm feeling in for Courtney Wold.
- 0:05Speaker 1: She's on a plane across to Perth at the moment
- 0:07Speaker 1: out of the first Test between Australia and India, and
- 0:10Speaker 1: I am joined by well childhood hero of mine actually
- 0:14Speaker 1: is a World Cup champion, an Ash's hero and one
- 0:17Speaker 1: of Fox Cricket's commentators ahead of the Summer of Cricket.
- 0:20Speaker 1: I'm joining another other than Michael Hussey. Mike, thanks so
- 0:23Speaker 1: much for joining us.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yeah, no worries, thanks for having me.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Looking forward to the series starting. It should be very
- 0:29Speaker 3: exciting that way.
- 0:31Speaker 1: Obviously, the Border Gavaska Trophy is now one of cricket's
- 0:34Speaker 1: great modern contests. What was it like during your day's
- 0:37Speaker 1: playing against India and how has that rivalry changed in
- 0:40Speaker 1: the decade or so since.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I think over the last fifteen twenty years of rivalry,
- 0:46Speaker 3: it's really growing, you know.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I think India has become a real.
- 0:51Speaker 3: Powerhouse in world cricket. And yeah, their fans are so fanatical.
- 0:57Speaker 2: There's been so many great players come out of that
- 0:58Speaker 2: country over.
- 0:59Speaker 3: There, and obviously, yeah, you know Arbigan Sin you know,
- 1:03Speaker 3: I don't assuming in the name. I guess over the years,
- 1:06Speaker 3: but yeah, I just feel like the yeah, the rivalries
- 1:09Speaker 3: really growing so much and now it probably got arguably
- 1:13Speaker 3: the two best teams in the world that are.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Just fighting it out and.
- 1:16Speaker 3: India obviously one of the last two series in Australia,
- 1:18Speaker 3: which is so rare for Australia to lose in Australia.
- 1:21Speaker 2: So it certainly adds a lot to the series. And yeah,
- 1:25Speaker 2: I can't.
- 1:25Speaker 3: Think of probably a bigger series other than National series
- 1:28Speaker 3: really for an Australian teams.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Have you had a.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Chance to look at the Perth deck yet? Can we
- 1:32Speaker 1: expect another bouncy off the stadium pitch?
- 1:36Speaker 2: Well, I haven't actually been able to get out there yet.
- 1:38Speaker 3: There's been quite a bit of rain over here in
- 1:39Speaker 3: person the lead up to the test, so I don't
- 1:41Speaker 3: know if that's affected.
- 1:42Speaker 2: The grounds and preparation of the pitch.
- 1:45Speaker 3: I do believe there's quite a bit of grass on
- 1:46Speaker 3: the pitch which you're hoping to take a little bit off,
- 1:48Speaker 3: but it should be hard and it's pretty fast as well,
- 1:52Speaker 3: so i'd expect it might not be a little bit
- 1:55Speaker 3: slower on the first day, but a bit of moisture
- 1:57Speaker 3: in the pitch and then as it hardens up and
- 1:59Speaker 3: drives out, you can get faster and faster as I well.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Hopefully we don't get any rain on Friday or for
- 2:05Speaker 1: the five days after that. Obviously, with the Australian side,
- 2:08Speaker 1: the big storyline is Nathan McSweeney, who's expected to make
- 2:11Speaker 1: his Test debut tomorrow. Were you surprised at all by
- 2:15Speaker 1: his selection? There was certainly a lot of debate at
- 2:18Speaker 1: the time. He's obviously not a specialist open. What did
- 2:20Speaker 1: you make of his call up?
- 2:23Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I mean they've rewarded good form, you know,
- 2:25Speaker 3: in good current form. You know, he's obviously performed really
- 2:28Speaker 3: well without over the last year year in a bit.
- 2:30Speaker 4: I guess, And I think the hardest.
- 2:35Speaker 3: Thing for him is going to be the adjustment from
- 2:38Speaker 3: batting day number four or number three uster being an
- 2:41Speaker 3: opening batsman.
- 2:42Speaker 2: I think he's got the game, the temperament and the
- 2:44Speaker 2: technique to be able to handle the.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Moose, but it's more dealing with the mental side of
- 2:48Speaker 3: the game and the preparation being mentally ready to go.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Sometimes you're out in the field for.
- 2:53Speaker 3: I don't know, maybe one hundred overs or so and
- 2:54Speaker 3: then you've got ten minutes to get straight back off
- 2:56Speaker 3: and then and then you're out there with.
- 2:58Speaker 2: The past on ready to go to the bat.
- 3:00Speaker 3: So that can be a real mental challenge. So you know,
- 3:04Speaker 3: normally isn't number before you've got time to have a
- 3:06Speaker 3: share and just mentally relaxed a little bit before going.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Out to that. So that's probably the biggest but it's
- 3:11Speaker 2: going to have to make. But it's like change, Like
- 3:14Speaker 2: the selectors have got the philosophy of let's just.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Excess that many country who we think they are and
- 3:19Speaker 3: then we'll just figure out what's what they've made in
- 3:21Speaker 3: from there. And yeah, so it's going to be a
- 3:23Speaker 3: real challenge for nation between you, I think, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 3: moving from it, you know, from a position that he
- 3:28Speaker 3: feels comfortable in up to that position that he's not
- 3:31Speaker 3: really done before, especially against that's a great thing like India.
- 3:34Speaker 3: You know you're going to be going able to get
- 3:35Speaker 3: some former in challenging conditions. So yeah, it'll be it'll
- 3:39Speaker 3: be tough for him, but it looks like a really
- 3:41Speaker 3: good and well organized player. So you know, let's get
- 3:45Speaker 3: doctor a great start to his career.
- 3:47Speaker 1: You started your career as an opener succeeded there then
- 3:50Speaker 1: he scored the bulk of the Test rooms at four,
- 3:52Speaker 1: finished up at around five and six. Was that a
- 3:55Speaker 1: tough adjustment to make? I been trying all those different
- 3:57Speaker 1: roles in this Test site.
- 4:01Speaker 3: I think probably being an open to start with probably help,
- 4:04Speaker 3: you know, because you used to facing the new ball,
- 4:06Speaker 3: and to be honest, opening the batting is the hardest
- 4:08Speaker 3: job in the game, you know, such a tough position
- 4:10Speaker 3: to that.
- 4:11Speaker 2: I've at it in the.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Order in one day cricket quite a lot, so that
- 4:15Speaker 3: probably helped me make.
- 4:16Speaker 2: The adjustice of.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Being able to beat it in the middle order in
- 4:19Speaker 3: Test crickets. But it must admit initially it was very different,
- 4:23Speaker 3: you know, and it's just come out with new routines.
- 4:25Speaker 3: I'm having yourself ready, probably more mentally than anything, to
- 4:29Speaker 3: be able to get ready to perform.
- 4:30Speaker 4: So yeah, there was definitely some adjustmente you made.
- 4:34Speaker 2: But I quite enjoyed bating in the middle order. It
- 4:36Speaker 2: was a lot of fun. You know. Batting is some
- 4:38Speaker 2: a different situations.
- 4:39Speaker 3: You might come in with the teams in a lot
- 4:41Speaker 3: of trouble, you know, losing three or four wickets early,
- 4:43Speaker 3: and you've got a prime resurrect unings. You might come in,
- 4:45Speaker 3: you know, when the thing's done really well and looking
- 4:47Speaker 3: to declare, and it's got to tee off and for
- 4:49Speaker 3: as me runs you can you gets about the scale
- 4:52Speaker 3: a little bit sometimes.
- 4:53Speaker 2: Well, which is a lot of fun.
- 4:54Speaker 3: So now I really enjoyed the different challenge of batting
- 4:57Speaker 3: in the middle order.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Of course, batting with the tailor mcg against South Africa.
- 5:01Speaker 1: It was one of your finest Test knocks, of course.
- 5:03Speaker 1: But just back on Nathan McSweeney, you played a small
- 5:07Speaker 1: but significant role in his rise. You conducted a review
- 5:10Speaker 1: into South Australian cricket a few years ago. One of
- 5:13Speaker 1: the recommendations that came from that was encouraging South Australia
- 5:16Speaker 1: to poach talent from other states, and one of Lesslie's
- 5:19Speaker 1: first moves was to bring across Nathan McSweeney. And of
- 5:22Speaker 1: course his career has flourished since then. You must feel
- 5:25Speaker 1: a little bit of pride knowing that you've played a
- 5:26Speaker 1: small role in his rise to Test status.
- 5:30Speaker 3: I'm not sure I can take much credit for that one, now.
- 5:33Speaker 3: I mean, that's a pretty long bow that if you're
- 5:35Speaker 3: willing to throw it my way, I'm happy to say this,
- 5:37Speaker 3: you know, but yeah, I mean I'd like to be
- 5:40Speaker 3: doing the.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Reviews out Australia.
- 5:43Speaker 3: You know, it's fascinating experiences to sort of get the
- 5:46Speaker 3: ideas and the thoughts from from everyone in down Australian
- 5:50Speaker 3: cricket from different ends.
- 5:51Speaker 2: From really I'm.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Really proud Parochium South Australians, and then the other end,
- 5:56Speaker 3: you know, you other other players and the administrators that
- 6:01Speaker 3: you have seen the game growing in South Australia and
- 6:04Speaker 3: how they can become a real power, how to keep
- 6:06Speaker 3: your field competition and one of the one of the
- 6:09Speaker 3: ideas was that because of the population is not huge
- 6:11Speaker 3: in South Australia, to be able to try and bring
- 6:15Speaker 3: talent from in the state, particularly from probably the bigger
- 6:18Speaker 3: populated states by Victoria and New South Wales.
- 6:21Speaker 2: But yeah, it's pretty good that.
- 6:23Speaker 3: The managed to get nat to m Tweeny, who he
- 6:25Speaker 3: looks like a quality player and I'm sure would have
- 6:27Speaker 3: been in Queensland's plans for the future.
- 6:29Speaker 2: But for him to be able to move to South Australia,
- 6:31Speaker 2: get an.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Opportunity and now playing Test cricket for Australia, it's a
- 6:35Speaker 3: good story. And yeah, I'm sure that South Australia says
- 6:38Speaker 3: that is a bit of a win and a bit
- 6:39Speaker 3: of a subtest story from their their plan of bringing
- 6:42Speaker 3: into their program.
- 6:44Speaker 1: Well, of course there's now three South Australian Test crickets
- 6:47Speaker 1: in the side alongside Travis Head and Alex Carey. First
- 6:50Speaker 1: time in decades that's happened, so plenty of for the
- 6:52Speaker 1: Red Backs to be excited about there. I guess with
- 6:56Speaker 1: mc sweeney, what happens if the first couple of tests,
- 6:59Speaker 1: for three tests, he has a bit of a rough trot,
- 7:01Speaker 1: get some low scores, do this likets back them for
- 7:04Speaker 1: all five tests, or I open the idea of them
- 7:07Speaker 1: maybe trying someone different for Melbourne and Sydney if things
- 7:09Speaker 1: don't work out.
- 7:12Speaker 3: Well, I believe that this test squad has been picked
- 7:14Speaker 3: for just the first Test match, So I don't know.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I don't know if you can read into that or not,
- 7:19Speaker 3: but look, i'd be very surprised if they've made the
- 7:23Speaker 3: big call of bringing Nathan mc sweeney into the Test
- 7:25Speaker 3: team opening the batting. I'd be very surprised if after
- 7:28Speaker 3: a couple of tests that they said.
- 7:30Speaker 2: That it's been working and we're going to move to
- 7:32Speaker 2: someone else.
- 7:33Speaker 3: I think they'll give him a run at it and
- 7:36Speaker 3: allow him some time to sort of settle into the role,
- 7:38Speaker 3: and said it's a big adjudgment for him moving from
- 7:40Speaker 3: the middle order up to the top.
- 7:42Speaker 2: It's going to take a little bit of time.
- 7:44Speaker 3: So they just backing in and we know he's got player,
- 7:48Speaker 3: we know he's got some runs behind him with South Australia.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Seam is a long term sort of player for Australia
- 7:55Speaker 3: and so give him every opportunity to grow into that role.
- 7:57Speaker 2: I think it would be important. I guess the challenge will.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Be if Australia goes one or two mill down early
- 8:03Speaker 3: in the series and he has to scot any runs,
- 8:05Speaker 3: there's going to be enormous pressure from the public and
- 8:08Speaker 3: the media and everyone on.
- 8:09Speaker 2: The outside to make some changes.
- 8:10Speaker 3: So that's probably going to be where the challengers sort
- 8:13Speaker 3: of comes as selected. So we're just about to wait
- 8:16Speaker 3: and see how it plays out. Let's hope to get
- 8:18Speaker 3: doctored with towards them runs earlier. Strugg a good start
- 8:21Speaker 3: of the series.
- 8:23Speaker 1: The battle between him and Boomra is going to be
- 8:24Speaker 1: one of the most enthralling contests of the series. I
- 8:27Speaker 1: can't wait, and I guess look at India, They've obviously
- 8:30Speaker 1: been one of the most dominant Test teams over the
- 8:31Speaker 1: past decade, but they are coming off the back of
- 8:34Speaker 1: that historic three nil whitewash against New Zealand. Do you
- 8:37Speaker 1: read lot into that and is that something they'll carry
- 8:40Speaker 1: into this series or does this feel like a bit
- 8:41Speaker 1: of a fresh start for this Indian team.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Well, I think that'll be seeing it as like, okay,
- 8:47Speaker 3: let's put that behind us very quickly.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I mean, it was a shock.
- 8:50Speaker 3: I mean, India do not lose at home very often
- 8:52Speaker 3: at all, and let alone three meals. You know, you're
- 8:55Speaker 3: going to give a lot of credit to the key
- 8:56Speaker 3: Weason the way they performed there, but you know, the
- 8:59Speaker 3: Indian style think, well, the conditions are very different from
- 9:02Speaker 3: India to Australia, so you know, let's let's just let
- 9:05Speaker 3: that series go focused on playing well in austraat They've
- 9:07Speaker 3: played well in Australia in.
- 9:08Speaker 2: The last two series. Over here won the series, so
- 9:12Speaker 2: they'll take some confidence in that knowing that they've done
- 9:15Speaker 2: well over here in the part.
- 9:18Speaker 3: But it will be interesting to see how they react
- 9:20Speaker 3: that they've been copping a lot of criticism from back
- 9:22Speaker 3: home and particularly some of their biggest names, the Charmer
- 9:25Speaker 3: and after that Cole.
- 9:26Speaker 2: You have a lot of runs of Late.
- 9:28Speaker 3: So you know, these guys are proud players, proud Indians
- 9:32Speaker 3: and they'll take a lot of pride in their own performance.
- 9:34Speaker 2: So I'm expected about that quite hard.
- 9:37Speaker 3: But it will be interesting to see if there is
- 9:39Speaker 3: any issue left from from that previous series against the Vielins.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I don't think there will be. I think they're going to.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Come out really hard, really confident, and try and hit
- 9:48Speaker 3: me out the Alding Pard early.
- 9:50Speaker 1: It's been intriguing to see since they've touched down in
- 9:53Speaker 1: Perth just how secretive the team has been. Obviously they're
- 9:55Speaker 1: trying to train behind closed doors. I don't think any
- 9:58Speaker 1: of the players have spoken to local media. Does that
- 10:01Speaker 1: come down to a bit of just how Indian cricket
- 10:03Speaker 1: culture is or is there a reason behind them being
- 10:07Speaker 1: a little bit secret of heading to this first Test.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Well, there's always an intensity around the Indian team because
- 10:14Speaker 3: I can understand why they want to black out the
- 10:16Speaker 3: nets and things like that. It's not so much worrying
- 10:20Speaker 3: about Australia watching the train or you know, get you
- 10:23Speaker 3: some fives in their seeing what's going on.
- 10:26Speaker 2: It's more about that fans.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Their fans are so fanatical and literally if the nets
- 10:32Speaker 3: were open, there see probably thousands and thousands of people
- 10:34Speaker 3: coming down and watching, you know, the Indian same trains,
- 10:37Speaker 3: particularly watching verout Coli bat and I think from a
- 10:40Speaker 3: player point of view, it can be a little bit
- 10:42Speaker 3: distracting your time, and so that's probably just one of
- 10:44Speaker 3: us like, let's just be really focused, Let's just be
- 10:47Speaker 3: really intense with our training and our preparation.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Let's get everything right and then we can come into
- 10:51Speaker 2: the series, you know, in the best possible frame of mind.
- 10:55Speaker 3: If you've got thousands of people, got of hang around
- 10:57Speaker 3: the nets, make lots of noise and lots of movement,
- 10:59Speaker 3: can be a little bit of a distraction.
- 11:01Speaker 4: So I think it's probably.
- 11:02Speaker 3: More about that sorde of things than it is, you know,
- 11:05Speaker 3: about secrecy or anything like that.
- 11:08Speaker 1: There's a few question marks around India's starting eleven row
- 11:11Speaker 1: at Shimer's obviously just recently celebrated the birth of his
- 11:14Speaker 1: second child, sup and Gil copped a knock to the
- 11:16Speaker 1: finger during the warm ups ahead of this test. But
- 11:18Speaker 1: the other sort of question is Ashvin and Judasia, who
- 11:21Speaker 1: are probably the first names in the starting level at home.
- 11:25Speaker 1: But do you think they can have two spinners in
- 11:27Speaker 1: their first eleven for a Test match in Perth which
- 11:29Speaker 1: traditionally favors quick bowling.
- 11:32Speaker 3: If I'm being honest, I'll be surprised. I'll be surprised
- 11:35Speaker 3: if they play bots to spinners. But I don't know
- 11:39Speaker 3: if this is India that they will make their own
- 11:41Speaker 3: mind up there. But yeah, you're right, the pitch generally
- 11:44Speaker 3: is suited too fast bouncing you know bowlers. I guess then,
- 11:48Speaker 3: and not as much. Having said that, Nathan Lyon's got
- 11:52Speaker 3: a great record of playing in Perth and he's actually
- 11:54Speaker 3: got the most wicket of Australian bowlers here in Perth,
- 11:58Speaker 3: so you know, I'm sure I'll can all that before
- 12:01Speaker 3: making their decision. They're two quality bowlers, both Jeneis around Ashman.
- 12:05Speaker 3: I wouldn't be surprised if they played just one of
- 12:07Speaker 3: them and then playing all round us time length in
- 12:09Speaker 3: their batting, as well as a couple of young all
- 12:11Speaker 3: rounded there in the Indian.
- 12:13Speaker 2: Set up that are exciting.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Not a lot of experience of playing in Australian conditions,
- 12:18Speaker 3: but maybe they might keep one of those.
- 12:20Speaker 2: Tides to go. But having said that, you know quality,
- 12:24Speaker 2: you can't beat quality no matter what the conditions are
- 12:26Speaker 2: and neighbors.
- 12:27Speaker 3: I just think, you know what, Ashman can do a
- 12:30Speaker 3: job in Australia on the pitch, as can jid Asa,
- 12:35Speaker 3: and there's probably going to be maybe just as good's
- 12:37Speaker 3: not better.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Than maybe a team bowling or a round it. So
- 12:39Speaker 2: it's going to be fascinating.
- 12:40Speaker 3: What don't probably have the right answer of the day,
- 12:42Speaker 3: but I'd probably be surprised that they played both.
- 12:44Speaker 1: In I guess look at the Australian team that's pretty stable.
- 12:48Speaker 1: This is the same core group they've had for a while.
- 12:50Speaker 1: The only slight question mark would be minus Labushane, who's
- 12:54Speaker 1: play his own standards, had a quiet twenty four months
- 12:57Speaker 1: or so. Would he be feeling a little bit of
- 12:59Speaker 1: pressure ahead of this series where historically Gieswa Pajara was
- 13:03Speaker 1: the number three who was winning them series just through
- 13:05Speaker 1: batting time. Is there now that sort of reliance on
- 13:08Speaker 1: Lavishine to serve a similar role.
- 13:12Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm sure he'll be feeling a little bit of pressure.
- 13:14Speaker 3: I mean, he's a guy that just loves that and
- 13:18Speaker 3: when he's not scoring as many runs he would like,
- 13:20Speaker 3: then you know, he start getting a little bit anxious,
- 13:22Speaker 3: so he'll.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Want to start series off really well.
- 13:25Speaker 3: I've been watching pretty closely in the lead up to
- 13:26Speaker 3: the set series, and he's practicing really well.
- 13:30Speaker 2: The technique will solid you nice and sound.
- 13:33Speaker 3: He's sort of made a couple of little small adjustments,
- 13:36Speaker 3: like from a game plan point of view, that where
- 13:39Speaker 3: he's thinking you're going to bowl him, And yeah, I
- 13:42Speaker 3: mean it's it's a real confidence game and a lot
- 13:44Speaker 3: of these guys he just got off the gup positives.
- 13:47Speaker 3: Get that first for under the belt, then you can
- 13:49Speaker 3: just relax and feel like your ring series. You've had
- 13:52Speaker 3: a good look at all their bowls. But yeah, if
- 13:55Speaker 3: he gets a couple of those scores earlier, then.
- 13:56Speaker 2: That that tension and just start to write again.
- 13:59Speaker 3: And yeah, I saw the you know, the critics out
- 14:03Speaker 3: there will sort of start coming to the floor, and
- 14:05Speaker 3: but yeah, that's that's what critics all about. As a player,
- 14:07Speaker 3: you've just got to try and somehow deal with all
- 14:09Speaker 3: those external distractions and just focus on what's really important
- 14:12Speaker 3: to you out in the middle.
- 14:14Speaker 2: So, yeah, every player goes through certain.
- 14:17Speaker 3: Periods of their career where the runs but stance flowing
- 14:20Speaker 3: as much as what you know, you'd hope, or what
- 14:22Speaker 3: everyone else expects you to. But we know he's a
- 14:24Speaker 3: quality player, and we know there's probably big runs just
- 14:26Speaker 3: around the corner.
- 14:28Speaker 1: I know you've got other media obligations to get to,
