- 0:07Welcome to North Shore News and Interviews on
- 0:10Amherst Island Radio. Each week we keep you updated
- 0:14on newsworthy events, happenings and conversations
- 0:17that we've had with people in the local community
- 0:20and beyond. BGC Southeast's first round of STEM
- 0:28field trips were a success according to the organization.
- 0:32Between September and December 2025, over 500
- 0:35students from schools in Loyalist Township visited
- 0:38BGC's STEM and Robotics Center. Students from
- 0:41grades 5 through 12 were able to take part in
- 0:43free field trips funded by a community grant
- 0:46from Loyalist Township. Associate Director of
- 0:49STEM and Strategic Initiatives at BGC Southeast,
- 0:52Bruna Guarino Marais, explained how the Loyalist
- 0:55Township Community Grant helped them organize
- 0:57the field trips. We got a Loyalist Township Community
- 1:01Grant, which is how we were able to do this project.
- 1:07So yeah, we had never done it before, but I would
- 1:10say that normally we don't get 500 kids and field
- 1:13trips but yeah it was it was very successful.
- 1:16I think having the Loyalist Community Grant be
- 1:19able to fund this we were able to offer everything
- 1:22for free to all the schools so we had the BGC
- 1:25bus so we had transportation we had all the staffing
- 1:29materials so we arranged everything for the school
- 1:32so everyone that we reached out to was was really
- 1:34willing to and excited to come. We really wanted
- 1:37to reach everyone so that was that was really
- 1:39nice that we were able to get Um, a class from
- 1:41Amherst Island. So they took the ferry and our
- 1:44bus met them at the ferry and brought them to
- 1:46BGC and then dropped them off at the at the ferry
- 1:48again. Um, so yeah, we were able to reach all
- 1:51the schools in Loyalist Township, which was just
- 1:54really, really nice to see. Guarino Marais talks
- 1:56about what the students experience on the field
- 1:58trips. It obviously varies a little bit depending
- 2:02on their age range, but really we were doing
- 2:05hands -on workshops in robotics, coding, and
- 2:113D design and fabrication. So they varied a little
- 2:14bit, but most of them, they were using these
- 2:19Lego Spike Prime robotics kits. So they get to
- 2:23build robots, and then they also get to do coding
- 2:26to program the robots. And then they also got
- 2:29to do a CAD design session where they were designing
- 2:33their own key chains, for example. And then we
- 2:36were printing them off in our 3D printer and
- 2:39they got to go home with it as well, which was
- 2:42nice. And then just getting a tour as well of
- 2:45the STEM Center because a lot of the kids had
- 2:48never been here before. And even though, of course,
- 2:51it's a little bit far for Loyalist residents,
- 2:54it's still really nice that. they know that they
- 2:56have this resource available. Guarino Marais
- 2:59went on to note the interest from students and
- 3:01teachers. Afterwards we had some teachers reaching
- 3:04out wanting to book more field trips or you know
- 3:06then they learned that we have our after school
- 3:09evening STEM and robotics programs and so a lot
- 3:11of the kids wanted to know more about that and
- 3:14some of them even signed up so it was just really
- 3:17nice for them to learn about this resource in
- 3:19the community. Teachers were sending us like
- 3:21emails after the sessions like completely unprompted
- 3:24like the kids were like singing on the bus back
- 3:27to school and things like that. So that was just
- 3:31really, really heartfelt when, you know, we don't,
- 3:33we're not asking for testimonials. They're just
- 3:35kind of thanking us and giving us some praise.
- 3:38So it just, you know, it helps us keep going.
- 3:40Guarino Marais talks about the importance of
- 3:42funding going forward. The constraint is really
- 3:44just, just the funding. We would love to do it
- 3:46for free, but finding that sustainable source
- 3:49of funding is important. I think with the Loyalist
- 3:52Township grant. We definitely are looking forward
- 3:55to applying for it again, at least next year.
- 3:57But in the time being, we saw how successful
- 3:59this was and how much the kids enjoyed it and
- 4:01learned from it. So we're looking at other opportunities.
- 4:05I mean, we obviously can't offer the... We do
- 4:08field trips for a small cost where parents can
- 4:11pay a little bit for their kids to come. But
- 4:13then it obviously becomes a bit of an obstacle,
- 4:16but that is always... an option until we find
- 4:20t this for Amherst Island minor hockey matchups,
- 4:49and the annual historic hockey game recreating
- 4:51Kingston's very first game. There will also be
- 4:54a chance to skate with the Kingston Front Knacks.
- 4:57Thursday, January 22nd from 6 p .m. to 8 p .m.,
- 5:00it's the Greater Kingston Curling Demo. Friday,
- 5:02January 23rd from 6 p .m. to 8 p .m., you can
- 5:05enjoy Ringette. Then on Saturday, January 24th
- 5:08from noon to 2 p .m., it's Kingston's historic
- 5:11hockey game. Later that afternoon from 4 to 5
- 5:13p .m., it's your chance to skate with the Kingston
- 5:16Frontenacs. And finally, Sunday, January 25th
- 5:19from 9 a .m. to 4 p .m., there will be kids'
- 5:21minor hockey games taking place. It's Boards
- 5:23Up Rink Sports at Springer Market Square in downtown

- 5:58are open right now with a deadline of January
- 6:0119th. The Community Foundation of Lenox and Addicton
- 6:05had another successful year of supporting local
- 6:07charitable causes and students thanks to the
- 6:10ongoing support of generous L &A donors through
- 6:13its endowment fund. The foundation distributed
- 6:15$107 ,000 $500 to 21 charitable initiatives in
- 6:202025 and continues to support local projects
- 6:23across a broad range of community needs, according
- 6:26to Foundation Executive Director Bob Baker. The
- 6:29Foundation also distributed $80 ,500 in student
- 6:33awards and scholarships to 28 Lenox and Addington
- 6:36high school students pursuing post -secondary
- 6:39education. Local community donors are inspired
- 6:41to create transformational change in L &A by
- 6:44creating funds that improve the quality of life
- 6:46for those who live in, work in, and enjoy this
- 6:49community," said Baker. This year, we added two
- 6:52new funds from the Alkenbrecht family and the
- 6:55Earhart family. The community foundation collects
- 6:58donations from individuals, families, businesses
- 7:00within L &A. pooling these funds into an endowment,
- 7:04investing the money and then distributing a portion
- 7:06of the earned income back to the L &A community
- 7:09through grants to local non -profit organizations,
- 7:12assessing diverse community needs and addressing
- 7:15them. Since initiating this new strategic plan
- 7:18in 2023, the endowment has grown by a million
- 7:21dollars and now stands at $4 .5 million today.
- 7:26thanks to the generous donations and the investment
- 7:29growth. This includes the addition of five new
- 7:31funds created by local donors, bringing the total
- 7:34number of funds held to 44. In the past three
- 7:37years, the Community Foundation achieved its
- 7:39best years of fundraising in recent times by
- 7:41securing a total of $597 ,000. We owe a great
- 7:46deal of thanks to the hard work of our volunteer
- 7:48board of directors and our dedicated donors,"
- 7:51said Baker. The Community Foundation of Lenox
- 7:53and Addicton is further reminding the community

- 8:17in assessing the grants and student award applications.
- 8:21Grants for these projects come entirely from
- 8:23funds established at the community foundation
- 8:25by individuals families and organizations who
- 8:28want to build a community in which we all thrive
- 8:31together. A complete list of the funded projects

- 9:40launch of recycling depot services at Violet
- 9:43Landfill in Odessa. The service will be running
- 9:45Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8am to
- 9:474 .30pm. This service change has a response to
- 9:50the loss of access to recycling drop -off services
- 9:53previously available at the Kingston Area Recycling
- 9:55Centre. The change is due to updates to provincial
- 9:58recycling regulations and the absence of long
- 10:00-term funding through circular materials. Violet
- 10:03Road Landfill is located at 1346 Violet Road
- 10:06in Odessa. This service is available to Loyalist
- 10:09Township residents only and is intended for bulk

- 10:38as winter sets in, stormwater ponds are not safe
- 10:41for any type of winter recreation. These ponds
- 10:43have constant water movement, incoming runoff
- 10:46and fluctuating water levels that prevent ice
- 10:48from forming evenly or safely. Ice may look solid
- 10:51but can be extremely thin in hidden areas. Snow
- 10:54can cover weak or unstable spots and winter salt
- 10:57applications entering the ponds can weaken ice
- 10:59and speed up melting, even during very cold temperatures.
- 11:03The township reminds parents and guardians to
- 11:05take a moment to speak with your children about
- 11:07the dangers of walking, playing, or skating on
- 11:09stormwater ponds. Loyalist Township does not
- 11:12permit recreational activities on or near stormwater
- 11:15ponds at any time of year. These facilities are
- 11:17designed for water management, not recreation,
- 11:20and can be hazardous, especially in winter. For
