- 0:00Speaker 1: We'll go out to the ramos Law Hotline.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Car accident you need ramos Law medical doctor and attorney
- 0:04Speaker 2: ramos Law dot com. We're joined as we are every
- 0:06Speaker 2: Thursday at nine o'clock by Jeff Legwald. Leggy, what you
- 0:09Speaker 2: know about George and Tammy?
- 0:10Speaker 1: What you know?
- 0:11Speaker 3: We're standing by our man, Jeff Lagwald. Whos I'm sure
- 0:14Speaker 3: a big Tammy White Net fan.
- 0:16Speaker 4: Well, I did live in Nashville for ten years, so
- 0:18Speaker 4: I've heard that song a few times.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Said, Uh, I guess I need your help, Leggy, because
- 0:28Speaker 2: I can't muster up the interest that people have in
- 0:34Speaker 2: who is going to be the backup quarterback?
- 0:36Speaker 1: How big of a deal is Stidham and Ellinger to you?
- 0:41Speaker 5: Well, what'd you think of the AFC Championship game?
- 0:45Speaker 6: Uh?
- 0:46Speaker 1: Not great. I don't know if Ellinger would have been
- 0:48Speaker 1: any better.
- 0:49Speaker 4: I guess, well, what if he runs instead of throwing
- 0:53Speaker 4: the ball?
- 0:53Speaker 5: True?
- 0:53Speaker 1: I thought the exact same thing.
- 0:55Speaker 6: In a lot of those situations where you just needed
- 0:57Speaker 6: two yards to pound out in the blizzard, having a
- 1:00Speaker 6: running quarterback in there would have made a huge difference.
- 1:04Speaker 5: I will say. You know, and obviously Sean.
- 1:08Speaker 4: Has liked Stidham from the you know from the very
- 1:11Speaker 4: moment he got here, Sean he Stidham was one of
- 1:15Speaker 4: his first you know, free agency pursuits. That wasn't a
- 1:20Speaker 4: lineman you know back in the day. So uh, you
- 1:24Speaker 4: know that that's a player they've liked. But he really
- 1:27Speaker 4: really likes Ellinger. And I would say if you talk
- 1:29Speaker 4: to personnel guys around the league, you know, there's no
- 1:33Speaker 4: law that says your backup quarterback sort of has to
- 1:36Speaker 4: have a similar skill set as a starter. But it
- 1:41Speaker 4: doesn't hurt. And I think Ellinger as a player is
- 1:45Speaker 4: a little more is closer to to what bo Nix
- 1:49Speaker 4: is as a player.
- 1:52Speaker 6: Why isn't bow Knicks playing them nite?
- 1:55Speaker 4: I think Vick this was the plan all along. If
- 1:58Speaker 4: it was a grass field, would he play? I think
- 2:00Speaker 4: the odds would be better. I just think it's a
- 2:03Speaker 4: turf turf field indoors, and why mess around with that
- 2:08Speaker 4: and just have him played the last two because he
- 2:10Speaker 4: probably only would play two preseason games anyway, So just
- 2:15Speaker 4: pick the other two, I think is what they were thinking.
- 2:19Speaker 4: And you know, again, why put him on field turf
- 2:23Speaker 4: for his first game back?
- 2:25Speaker 5: I think was part of that.
- 2:26Speaker 6: I want to follow up on that the other day
- 2:28Speaker 6: when Greg Penner met with the media, and I hate
- 2:30Speaker 6: those kind of media sessions where everybody's trying to talk
- 2:33Speaker 6: over everybody else and you're trying.
- 2:34Speaker 4: To get Yeah, everybody's got everybody's got a pet question.
- 2:38Speaker 5: And everybody's trying to get there. I hate them, right,
- 2:41Speaker 5: So it ain't good.
- 2:42Speaker 6: One of my questions was going to be, but I
- 2:44Speaker 6: just didn't have the wherewithal to ask. It was going
- 2:46Speaker 6: to be about grass fields, because Greg Penner obviously is
- 2:51Speaker 6: one of the supporters of grass turf. He not only
- 2:54Speaker 6: has grass turf here in Denver, he changes the turf
- 2:57Speaker 6: mid mid season, unlike some owners.
- 3:00Speaker 4: And I'm sure they did it with one game left.
- 3:03Speaker 6: Yes, yes, And I'm sure he fully supports every NFL
- 3:07Speaker 6: stadium has having real turf. Now, I wanted to ask
- 3:10Speaker 6: him about it, but I'm sure his answer would have
- 3:12Speaker 6: been pretty diplomatic because he doesn't want to throw other
- 3:14Speaker 6: owners under the bus.
- 3:16Speaker 1: But why can he do it while others can't. It's simple,
- 3:18Speaker 1: in my book, money, it's it's his money.
- 3:22Speaker 4: Well, look at everything they do. They're more willing to
- 3:25Speaker 4: now they have more money. Their ownership group is the
- 3:29Speaker 4: richest in the NFL. That's the bottom line right now.
- 3:32Speaker 4: As in the current ownership structure of teams, the Broncos
- 3:37Speaker 4: have the richest ownership group.
- 3:39Speaker 5: In the league.
- 3:40Speaker 4: But that said, he is willing to spend that money.
- 3:44Speaker 4: They have the practice facility that will change how people
- 3:48Speaker 4: think about practice facilities all over the league because they're
- 3:52Speaker 4: willing to spend the money. And they've replaced the turf
- 3:57Speaker 4: for home games several times, including with one game left.
- 4:02Speaker 5: In the twenty twenty four season.
- 4:04Speaker 4: I believe was that they they simply put in a
- 4:07Speaker 4: new field for the season finale, and uh, they're just
- 4:12Speaker 4: willing to do that. And all of the stadiums they've
- 4:15Speaker 4: toured extensively. Uh, they've looked at, you know, how they
- 4:19Speaker 4: maintain the grass field. I still think, you know, they
- 4:24Speaker 4: they haven't said anything about what you know, they've told
- 4:27Speaker 4: the architect or anything that you know, and they say
- 4:30Speaker 4: renderings are close. But it will stun me if we
- 4:33Speaker 4: don't see something like Tottenham Hotspur had in the in
- 4:38Speaker 4: the London Stadium where the field is grown under the
- 4:42Speaker 4: stadium and then.
- 4:44Speaker 5: Brought up for games.
- 4:46Speaker 4: Uh, so they could they could maintain that during the
- 4:49Speaker 4: winter much more easily than they than they can now
- 4:53Speaker 4: with just coils and and other heated heated it's the
- 5:00Speaker 4: entire field complex is under the stadium and they have
- 5:05Speaker 4: grow lights and the grounds crew. There's enough room for
- 5:11Speaker 4: them to sort of walk the whole field and maintain
- 5:17Speaker 4: the field, and then they just raise it up and
- 5:22Speaker 4: they would It also lets you do and if you
- 5:25Speaker 4: own the stadium and you're the penners and you can
- 5:29Speaker 4: have any concert you want and monster truck races and motocross,
- 5:35Speaker 4: you can make an awful lot of money. And guess what,
- 5:38Speaker 4: you don't wreck your field because it's beneath everything you're having.
- 5:43Speaker 4: You know, if they have a Taylor Swift concert there,
- 5:48Speaker 4: they just simply put up the you know, the platform
- 5:53Speaker 4: that the field is under, so they they never they
- 5:58Speaker 4: would never injure the girl ass or damage the grass
- 6:01Speaker 4: that they're going to play football on.
- 6:03Speaker 5: You know.
- 6:03Speaker 6: Italian mothers do exactly that with their couches.
- 6:05Speaker 5: They put plastic couches.
- 6:08Speaker 6: Never touch Yeah, you never touched the leather of the cloth.
- 6:11Speaker 5: Ever.
- 6:12Speaker 4: I will say I I had an Irish mom who
- 6:15Speaker 4: did the same thing.
- 6:16Speaker 5: We had the it's awful in the summer.
- 6:19Speaker 4: I think that's just like that's like that's like corporate
- 6:22Speaker 4: punishment in the summer is like, yeah, go relax on
- 6:25Speaker 4: the couch, and it's like being in a skillet.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Jeff, let me preface this with all due respect, repect, I.
- 6:33Speaker 5: Love I love it with all due respect. You really
- 6:36Speaker 5: stink the job.
- 6:37Speaker 3: No, you're you're really good at your job. And I
- 6:38Speaker 3: love your Bonix article with all due respect. You've got
- 6:41Speaker 3: the body of a sinner. Could you give them a
- 6:45Speaker 3: couple of snaps tomorrow night? I mean, who's who's gonna
- 6:47Speaker 3: snap the football for the Denver Broncos.
- 6:49Speaker 4: I can snap, I can multitask problem all right? No,
- 6:54Speaker 4: that's that's a real issue. I mean we don't want
- 6:56Speaker 4: to like, you know, everybody even you know, whenever you
- 6:59Speaker 4: talk to are like you pitch offensive line stories and
- 7:03Speaker 4: their eyes glaze over.
- 7:04Speaker 5: So I know it's not something we talk about.
- 7:07Speaker 4: But that's a real significant issue right now. And you
- 7:12Speaker 4: know they say it's not a reason, but I think
- 7:16Speaker 4: there's a percentage in the pie chart of why bo
- 7:19Speaker 4: Nix isn't playing tomorrow is that they may have Calvin
- 7:24Speaker 4: Throckmorton snapping the ball, who's really a guard and they
- 7:29Speaker 4: don't want to move Quinn minors over because now you're
- 7:31Speaker 4: messing up two spots.
- 7:32Speaker 5: You know, you're taking.
- 7:34Speaker 4: The best right guard in the league, and oh guess what,
- 7:39Speaker 4: your run game, which you've been working on all camp,
- 7:42Speaker 4: is pretty right handed in a lot of situations. So
- 7:46Speaker 4: moving minors out of there impacts something you've spent your
- 7:50Speaker 4: entire training camp working on in a big way. So
- 7:54Speaker 4: that's not just a small thing to just say all
- 7:57Speaker 4: minors can do it. In a game, you're messing up,
- 8:00Speaker 4: you're you know, you're impacting a lot of other things
- 8:03Speaker 4: in their offense if.
- 8:04Speaker 5: You do that.
- 8:05Speaker 4: So I think they still believe Wattenberg will be ready
- 8:09Speaker 4: for the opener. You know, as far as these three
- 8:12Speaker 4: preseason games, I think they're going to try and just
- 8:15Speaker 4: get through it. I mean, Dieter, Michael Dieter was a quiet,
- 8:20Speaker 4: really good free agent, signing for basically the veteran minimum.
- 8:24Speaker 4: The guy was an eight year you know, this is
- 8:26Speaker 4: ninth year, his eighth year in the league. He started games,
- 8:30Speaker 4: and to lose him, he was kind of going to
- 8:34Speaker 4: be their insurance policy, whether it was on the roster
- 8:38Speaker 4: or you know, one of the veteran practice squad spots.
- 8:41Speaker 5: But that was a good plan.
- 8:43Speaker 4: They made and it got torpedoed when they had you know, basically,
- 8:48Speaker 4: three centers get injured in a.
- 8:50Speaker 5: In a week.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Jeff Lagweld ESPN dot com. All Conversations with Legie brought
- 8:54Speaker 2: to you by the International Brotherhood of Electoral Workers IBEW
- 8:58Speaker 2: Local sixty eight.
- 8:58Speaker 1: Start with the job and with a career. Can you
- 9:01Speaker 1: take a trip to hypothetical land with me? Per second?
- 9:05Speaker 6: Likeetic I love it?
- 9:09Speaker 5: Yeah, radio? What's the clip? Now we're doing the radio? Yeah?
- 9:13Speaker 2: Yeah, these are the hypotheticals, right, I love them. So
- 9:17Speaker 2: I read your article about bo Nix, and I think
- 9:19Speaker 2: you're spot on about everything. It feels like it's Taylor
- 9:22Speaker 2: made for him to have a good year earn a
- 9:24Speaker 2: contract extension. But here's what I thought about, Because tonight
- 9:27Speaker 2: we're going to see the debut of for Nana Mendoza
- 9:29Speaker 2: in Vegas, and let's say he becomes the number one
- 9:33Speaker 2: overall pick that they hope he is right, that he's
- 9:35Speaker 2: long term franchise quarterback for them. Hypothetically, you could have
- 9:41Speaker 2: a division in which mahomes Herbert, Mendoza and Knicks play
- 9:45Speaker 2: each other for the next ten years.
- 9:47Speaker 1: When does that ever happening?
- 9:48Speaker 4: Louise No, that's pretty stout, you know, to have something
- 9:53Speaker 4: like you know, back in the day when there were
- 9:55Speaker 4: fewer teams, you had more sort of these you know,
- 9:59Speaker 4: tougher matchup. But in the current salary cap world, I mean,
- 10:03Speaker 4: it's already a difficult division in that way. And I
- 10:07Speaker 4: would argue, you know, in my entire career, I've covered
- 10:11Speaker 4: nothing but AFC teams, So for forty years I've covered
- 10:16Speaker 4: AFC teams, and I've never seen the AFC have a
- 10:21Speaker 4: string of quarterbacks you have to get through just to
- 10:24Speaker 4: get to the Super Bowl. Yeah, I mean, just look
- 10:27Speaker 4: at who you have to get through if everybody makes
- 10:31Speaker 4: the playoffs.
- 10:32Speaker 5: I mean, you got to earn.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Burul lamar In Mahomes missed last.
- 10:36Speaker 4: Year, That's what I mean. And look who was still
- 10:39Speaker 4: left in the AFC. So you know, Josh Allen Whens,
- 10:44Speaker 4: you know, an MVP is still waiting. You got lucky
- 10:47Speaker 4: that all these other guys didn't even make it, and.
- 10:50Speaker 5: You still have to slog your way through.
- 10:54Speaker 4: And the division, this division would be of the core
- 10:58Speaker 4: of that, especially if if bo continues you know his
- 11:04Speaker 4: you know, his current progression. I mean, you can't argue
- 11:07Speaker 4: with the success rate we all quibble with the with
- 11:11Speaker 4: the mechanics of it all, with his mechanics, because there's
- 11:15Speaker 4: something to talk about there.
- 11:17Speaker 5: And it's real.
- 11:19Speaker 4: But the bottom line is an awful lot of people
- 11:22Speaker 4: would take a team and a quarterback who have that
- 11:25Speaker 4: kind of record over the last two years.
- 11:29Speaker 6: I'm looking at the roster and it's so predictable because
- 11:32Speaker 6: the depth chart, you know, you can name every starter
- 11:34Speaker 6: the only and it's not a surprise, it's a pleasant move.
- 11:38Speaker 6: Marvin Mims is listed as a starter. Is he really
- 11:42Speaker 6: a starter?
- 11:42Speaker 1: I mean, what do we make of this?
- 11:45Speaker 5: Well? I mean, hey, I always tell people that there
- 11:49Speaker 5: are a few.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Things Sean Payton hates more in football than putting out
- 11:53Speaker 4: a depth chart in the preseason. He is not a fan,
- 11:56Speaker 4: you know, he dislikes it. He does it because you
- 11:59Speaker 4: have to all of these things. But the top three
- 12:03Speaker 4: receivers throughout this training camp have been Sutton, Wattle and
- 12:09Speaker 4: Mims and so yeah, and I think they lined up
- 12:13Speaker 4: in three wide more than anything else last year. So
- 12:17Speaker 4: that's their base formation and that's how they were listed.
- 12:19Speaker 4: So I think it's a real representation at that position.
- 12:24Speaker 4: Those are the three guys who've been the best. Now
- 12:26Speaker 4: Pat Bryant is in the mix there. I mean, he
- 12:31Speaker 4: is pushing those other three. Pat Bryant's performed as well
- 12:38Speaker 4: as any of those other guys.
- 12:40Speaker 5: Right Wow.
- 12:41Speaker 6: The reason I bring that up, Jeff, because as we know,
- 12:43Speaker 6: Sean Payton's a big guy receiver, coach, big guy, big guy.
- 12:46Speaker 6: Those are two little guys in the starting three there.
- 12:48Speaker 6: I mean, those are two guys that are my size
- 12:49Speaker 6: that are suddenly starting alongside Courtland sun Well.
- 12:53Speaker 4: And that's why I've told people, you know, when other
- 12:57Speaker 4: like when I'm making the rounds around the league talking
- 13:00Speaker 4: about the draft or players. Uh, you know, people have
- 13:05Speaker 4: asked me, what do you think he'd really play those
- 13:07Speaker 4: guys at the same time, And I'm still not convinced
- 13:09Speaker 4: he would extensively because he wants big bodies on the
- 13:14Speaker 4: boundary and where Mims is a great, great boundary receiver.
- 13:20Speaker 4: I just don't know that Sean would consistently play sutt
- 13:24Speaker 4: and Wattle Mims together. You know, I think Bryant's in
- 13:27Speaker 4: that mix right now because of that physicality.
- 13:30Speaker 1: The name to watch for Tomorrow's game to you is
- 13:32Speaker 1: who Pat Bryant.
- 13:34Speaker 4: I mean, if he gets a lot of snaps and
- 13:37Speaker 4: plays the way he's been, he's gonna score you know,
- 13:39Speaker 4: a touchdown in the in the early going.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Uh uh.
- 13:44Speaker 4: But the guy I really want to see is uh,
- 13:47Speaker 4: you know, the young linebacker d I want to see him.
- 13:52Speaker 4: We'll see him go at it. He's having a he's
- 13:54Speaker 4: having a really good camp. And I was talking to
- 13:58Speaker 4: Vance Joseph about him and the one thing they did.
- 14:02Speaker 4: Now he's been playing with like the twos and the threes,
- 14:05Speaker 4: but Vance immediately gave him play calling duties. So he's
- 14:14Speaker 4: getting the calls right from day one of camp and
- 14:18Speaker 4: they have told I've heard from multiple people he hasn't
- 14:21Speaker 4: missed any I mean, so that when you ask Sean Payton,
- 14:26Speaker 4: how does a guy.
- 14:27Speaker 5: Convince you he should make the team.
- 14:29Speaker 4: All this stuff, his first answer is always does he
- 14:33Speaker 4: know what he's doing? And they don't talk about athleticism
- 14:38Speaker 4: at that point, at least Sean doesn't. I mean, he
- 14:41Speaker 4: just takes for granted that there is a baseline of
- 14:45Speaker 4: athleticism you're gonna need to survive in the NFL.
- 14:49Speaker 5: But he always says does he know what he's doing?
- 14:52Speaker 4: And very few rookies or young players at this camp
- 14:57Speaker 4: for the Broncos have shown they know what they're doing
- 15:00Speaker 4: as much as Murdock cast.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Is there any chance my favorite name in training camp
- 15:04Speaker 2: can make the team?
- 15:06Speaker 1: Joseph Man Jack the fourth at receiver.
- 15:12Speaker 5: You know, I ask you if they keep five receivers?
- 15:16Speaker 5: Come on, where.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Can he snap the football?
- 15:19Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 15:19Speaker 1: Can he snap the Can he play special teams?
- 15:23Speaker 5: Jack? He's a man Jack, and he is a man Jack.
- 15:26Speaker 4: But now, I just there's not a lot of room
- 15:29Speaker 4: anywhere on this roster that I'm actually very surprised they
- 15:34Speaker 4: did as well as they did signing their undrafted rookies
- 15:38Speaker 4: right after the draft, because most guys are in search
- 15:41Speaker 4: of of spots where they can make the team. But
- 15:45Speaker 4: being on the practice squad here is a pretty good
- 15:48Speaker 4: deal because you get to be around a great team,
- 15:51Speaker 4: and teams poach their guys or at least try to
- 15:56Speaker 4: because they like developmentally what what players do here.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Jeff Lagwell ESPN dot Com choices every Thursday. Always appreciate it,
- 16:03Speaker 2: leg you, thank you, buddy.
- 16:04Speaker 5: Thanks Fellas. No offense, Jeff, no offense, offense?
- 16:08Speaker 4: That's that's you always get that one as a as
- 16:12Speaker 4: a beat writer, Hey, no offense, but that that story
- 16:15Speaker 4: you wrote?
- 16:16Speaker 1: Really, you've never written a bad story in your life.
- 16:19Speaker 1: I've read everything good stuff, like you're the best
