- 0:00Hi everyone, it's Sarah from Sarah.
- 0:02No support workers. And today I am going solo and
- 0:04I'm talking about a topic that I love talking about because it's
- 0:08one of those things that makes such a big difference for the
- 0:11people that we serve. So today's episode is the
- 0:14support workers who actually changed lives.
- 0:16And I know it sounds really like that warm fuzzy feelings.
- 0:19And it is a little bit because they can have such a big impact.
- 0:23And let's get into why I fully believe this.
- 0:26Let me say something that might sound a little bit blunt.
- 0:29Not all support workers are the same.
- 0:31Some turn up, some turn it up, and some really show up.
- 0:35And the ones you actually change people lives, they're the ones
- 0:38that honestly give a shit. All right, so I'm going to talk
- 0:43about this. Like turning up versus showing
- 0:45up. There's a massive difference
- 0:47between the two. Turning up to shift and showing
- 0:50up for a person looks completely different.
- 0:53Turning out looks like doing the hours, following the routines,
- 0:57sticking to what's written. Showing out looks very
- 1:00different. It is being present for that
- 1:03person. It is noticing changes.
- 1:05It is actually caring about the person in front of you because
- 1:09this job is not about tasks. It's about humans and human
- 1:13relations. Curiosity is a superpower.
- 1:16The best support workers I've ever seen are curious.
- 1:19They're not nosy or pushy or just curious.
- 1:22They are things like, what do you feel like doing today?
- 1:26What's been on your mind? I can see that you're thinking,
- 1:29is there something you would like to tell me?
- 1:31Is there something you've been wanting to say or try say?
- 1:34And they are curious also with technology, especially in
- 1:37communication aids. They are curious about how to
- 1:40get somebody moving and how to get them engaged in community.
- 1:43They are curious of ways to to improve that person's life.
- 1:47They're not assuming, they're exploring.
- 1:49And because of that, they find opportunities that were never
- 1:53written in a plant, seeing opportunities that others miss.
- 1:56And this is something that like where I believe the magic really
- 1:59happens because they're actually caring.
- 2:02They start to see things a little bit differently.
- 2:05They start to open doors like, hey, did you want to check this
- 2:09out? We could trunk this together.
- 2:12Let's look into this. They deep dive and peel back the
- 2:15layers and they support someone. And this is how like the
- 2:18confidence of the person that we support starts to grow and you
- 2:21start to see it because if these support workers peeling back the
- 2:23layers and exploring opportunities that haven't been
- 2:26done before, This is how we build independence for the
- 2:29people that we serve as well, because they're getting
- 2:31opportunities to have these feelings and have these
- 2:35opportunities of activities that they probably may never have had
- 2:39unless it was explored. And that's how we expand
- 2:42somebody's life. Following through matters.
- 2:44All right, this part a lot of people miss.
- 2:47And it's not just about having an ID, it's about following
- 2:50through. So I believe that the best
- 2:52support workers remember what matters to that person brings it
- 2:56up again, take small steps forward with them.
- 2:59And not everything has to be big.
- 3:01Sometimes it's sending an e-mail, making a call, visiting
- 3:05a place or trying something once or a dish thing like cooked
- 3:08together that they never thought that they would cook.
- 3:11And it's about consistency and the consistency of the support
- 3:15worker to support this person is important.
- 3:18But also I would like to put like a disclaimer here.
- 3:21If you're a support worker and you say something we're gonna
- 3:25gonna do, you better see it through because the people that
- 3:29we serve also remember also remember how they got let down,
- 3:32how you said you'd do something and you didn't do something.
- 3:34And then also it's a lack of trust because you didn't follow
- 3:37through with what you said you're going to do.
- 3:39And that there is so important to not just to humans in
- 3:44general. Gosh, it doesn't have to be the
- 3:46people we serve. Humans in general.
- 3:47If you're going to say you're going to do something that
- 3:49you're going to go see it through and get it done because
- 3:51consistency is everything and consistency builds trust.
- 3:55It's not also about being perfect.
- 3:58Let's be real, like it's not going to you're not going to get
- 4:01it right on the first go. And there will be days where you
- 4:05miss something, you feel a bit flat or you don't even know what
- 4:08to say because it's you're in a situation that you've never been
- 4:12in before and a turn of events that's happening for this person
- 4:16here. You may not know as a support
- 4:19work, how to best support this person emotionally.
- 4:22We're human, we get it wrong, and that's OK what matters the
- 4:26most is that we keep coming back, we keep being curious, we
- 4:32keep caring, we keep looking for ways for them to connect because
- 4:36the. What people remember the most is
- 4:39not the task, not the schedule that they remember us as support
- 4:42workers. At the end of the day, the job
- 4:45isn't about doing support, it's about seeing a person and
- 4:49helping them have a life that feels like their own.
- 4:53And if you're someone who asks questions, looks for
- 4:56opportunities, and gives a shit, keep going because you're making
- 5:00a difference. Thank you so much for listening
