Latest / Podcast - Big 98.7 / ANNOUNCEMENT: Pike is Leaving, Gabe is Coming
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, here we go, big announcement.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Normally we say big announcement and we're doing another contest,
- 0:04Speaker 2: which is always very exciting, But this one is to
- 0:07Speaker 2: do with the show, and it's to do with me personally.
- 0:10Speaker 2: So for the last year and a half we've done
- 0:12Speaker 2: a thing called Pike and Amanda in the Morning, which
- 0:15Speaker 2: has been awesome. Unfortunately, let's just rip the band aid off, Amanda,
- 0:19Speaker 2: rip it by me, Pike. If you ever wondered which
- 0:21Speaker 2: one was Pike on the show, it's me am leaving
- 0:25Speaker 2: the show Pike and Amanda in the Morning. Why would
- 0:28Speaker 2: I do that again if you've been listening to this
- 0:32Speaker 2: show or whatever iteration of it for the last well
- 0:35Speaker 2: five years, because four and a half years ago you
- 0:37Speaker 2: might remember I also left the show. Now, the reasons
- 0:41Speaker 2: are very different, I will get to in a second.
- 0:44Speaker 2: But four and a half years ago, Amanda, it was you,
- 0:46Speaker 2: me and Jesse are old co worker doing the show,
- 0:48Speaker 2: and I wanted to just move on and do you know,
- 0:51Speaker 2: my own show and live somewhere else, and so that
- 0:55Speaker 2: would have been marched. I believe my last day was
- 0:57Speaker 2: March tenth of twenty twenty, which, if you remember what
- 1:01Speaker 2: happened days later.
- 1:03Speaker 3: Wasn't there like a pandemic or something.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Sort of threw a ranch into my plans. Well, I
- 1:07Speaker 2: ended up moving to Florida. It worked out great. My
- 1:09Speaker 2: wife and I loved it there and did a show
- 1:12Speaker 2: there on a station. And fast forward a year and
- 1:14Speaker 2: a half ago, said coworker and friend Jesse leaves the
- 1:18Speaker 2: show with Amanda, meaning there was an opening for a
- 1:21Speaker 2: host and a man had called me one day. I
- 1:23Speaker 2: was down there in Florida and I see my phone ring.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I thought, who's this lady? I don't remember that person. Well,
- 1:30Speaker 2: she said would you come back? And I thought, but
- 1:34Speaker 2: that'd be kind of crazy. So I did, and it's
- 1:38Speaker 2: been the best. However, one thing though, that hasn't changed
- 1:43Speaker 2: since I started doing a morning radio show, which is
- 1:45Speaker 2: in two thousand and ten, I think, is I cannot sleep.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Okay.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I never have been able to fall asleep like a
- 1:54Speaker 2: normal person. It's been diagnosed as a form of insomnia.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Of course, I've done everything I can to try and
- 2:02Speaker 2: fix it. It is very much anxiety induced. And what
- 2:07Speaker 2: I know does not work is that when I have
- 2:09Speaker 2: to get up at the time we do, which can
- 2:12Speaker 2: range from three point thirty in the morning to four am,
- 2:15Speaker 2: which is more like the middle of the night. I
- 2:17Speaker 2: cannot turn my brain off, and so I'm functioning on
- 2:21Speaker 2: what a lot of times ends up being zero hours
- 2:24Speaker 2: of sleep up to maybe I don't know, Amanda, A
- 2:27Speaker 2: good night for me would have been I guess four
- 2:29Speaker 2: hours probably of not quality sleep. And so throughout my
- 2:32Speaker 2: twenties it was just I just lived with it. That
- 2:35Speaker 2: was what I did. I just grinded and took naps
- 2:38Speaker 2: and was tired all the time. And if you know
- 2:40Speaker 2: me personally, it was just in every aspect of my life,
- 2:43Speaker 2: it was always, oh, Pike's tired, or Pike needs to
- 2:46Speaker 2: try to nap, or and it it sucked because you know, sleep,
- 2:51Speaker 2: it turns out, is pretty important.
- 2:53Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And so when I moved back here to do the
- 2:56Speaker 2: morning show, I had told myself while living in Florida
- 2:58Speaker 2: and I was doing an afternoon radio show and sleeping phenomenally.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Maybe not to normal person standards, but from what I
- 3:05Speaker 2: was used to, it was life changing, the healthiest I've
- 3:08Speaker 2: ever been. And I told myself and my wife and
- 3:11Speaker 2: my friends that I will never do a morning radio
- 3:13Speaker 2: show again because I just know that it doesn't.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Work for me.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Some people it does they can go to bed at
- 3:19Speaker 2: eight eight pm, get enough sleep and function throughout the day.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And I just have enough of a sample size now
- 3:25Speaker 2: to know that I cannot. But I did it anyway
- 3:28Speaker 2: because I thought maybe it'll be different, and I wanted
- 3:30Speaker 2: to do the show with Amanda, and I'm so glad
- 3:32Speaker 2: I did because it's been the most fun.
- 3:35Speaker 1: It has amazing. Sorry, I keep talking to you everything
- 3:38Speaker 1: you want to saying, No.
- 3:38Speaker 4: I'm listening because this is so important, and I mean
- 3:43Speaker 4: just the opportunity to host the show with Amanda, and
- 3:46Speaker 4: really I feel like be myself on the air for
- 3:49Speaker 4: the first time where I really got to, you know,
- 3:52Speaker 4: have more of the opportunity to say stuff.
- 3:54Speaker 2: And if you've listened, you probably think, and that's what
- 3:57Speaker 2: you did with it, But that's just me and I'm
- 3:59Speaker 2: a I'm a weird guy and I like being silly
- 4:02Speaker 2: and just it's been exactly what I wanted it to be.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I'm really proud of what we did for the last
- 4:07Speaker 2: year and a half, but ultimately for the last several
- 4:10Speaker 2: months now, I just knew that things hadn't changed and
- 4:15Speaker 2: I just.
- 4:15Speaker 1: Can't do it, can't do anymore. That's wrong. I could
- 4:18Speaker 1: do it.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I could keep doing it because I had done it
- 4:22Speaker 2: for so long, but it's just not how I want
- 4:25Speaker 2: to do it. So I decided to leave again. And
- 4:30Speaker 2: we've known this for months now. This is not anything
- 4:32Speaker 2: breaking internally, Amanda. I told you I think July was
- 4:36Speaker 2: when we talked about it. But I wanted to stick
- 4:38Speaker 2: around and ease the transition for the station, for the show,
- 4:40Speaker 2: for the company, which have all been so good to
- 4:42Speaker 2: me over the years to bring me back like that.
- 4:45Speaker 2: So that said, Amanda, your.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Thoughts, I support you one thousand percent, and I am
- 4:52Speaker 3: proud of you for making a decision that's best for
- 4:54Speaker 3: you and your beautiful wife and everything. Of Course, I'm
- 4:59Speaker 3: heartbroken because we have such a good relationship and it's
- 5:03Speaker 3: always been that way, and I was so so excited
- 5:06Speaker 3: when you came back.
- 5:08Speaker 1: But I'm also I'm.
- 5:09Speaker 3: Super excited for this next chapter because we know how
- 5:12Speaker 3: important this station is, how many people listen every single day,
- 5:16Speaker 3: and it's going to be amazing.
- 5:17Speaker 1: We have a new chapter and things are going to
- 5:19Speaker 1: be awesome, and that's what part of it. We just
- 5:22Speaker 1: make each other. So it's so heartbreaking.
- 5:25Speaker 2: It makes it so hard because it's not just you know,
- 5:29Speaker 2: there's so many jobs where it would be hard to
- 5:31Speaker 2: leave and your co workers are going to be upset,
- 5:33Speaker 2: and you are going to be, you know, sad to
- 5:35Speaker 2: leave a place that's great. But when you have listeners
- 5:39Speaker 2: involved and people who you seemingly care about the show
- 5:43Speaker 2: and about the station. I don't know how many I
- 5:45Speaker 2: don't see you on a daily basis because we're just seeing,
- 5:47Speaker 2: we're talking to each other. But I hope there are
- 5:48Speaker 2: people listening who enjoy it. And so that's what made
- 5:51Speaker 2: it so hard and does continue to make it so hard,
- 5:54Speaker 2: because we have this job, this unique job, which is
- 5:57Speaker 2: crazy to even say it's a job, and it's something
- 5:59Speaker 2: I've been able to do and earn a living doing
- 6:02Speaker 2: for so long.
- 6:03Speaker 1: It's crazy to give it up. It is. It feels crazy.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I feel embarrassed, you know, one, having just come back
- 6:10Speaker 2: here and we did this big hoopla. I had already
- 6:13Speaker 2: left before we did this big week long goodbye to
- 6:16Speaker 2: pipe and here I'm just doing it again. And so
- 6:19Speaker 2: trust me not.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Be embarrassed though, because that's You're just real.
- 6:22Speaker 3: And I think that's one thing that is most important,
- 6:24Speaker 3: is you know, we're just real, normal people doing the
- 6:27Speaker 3: best we can every day.
- 6:29Speaker 1: So what is next? Well, there's a couple of aspects
- 6:31Speaker 1: of that.
- 6:32Speaker 2: I know last time in twenty twenty, there was a
- 6:34Speaker 2: lot of just people curious, like what's he doing?
- 6:37Speaker 1: Where's he going?
- 6:37Speaker 2: Well, the reality was I was planning to go somewhere
- 6:40Speaker 2: to do a radio show, and while the pandemic ruined everything,
- 6:43Speaker 2: and then it ended up working on What am I
- 6:45Speaker 2: doing now? Not that not getting a radio job. I'm
- 6:49Speaker 2: not leaving for any other reason other than because I
- 6:52Speaker 2: don't want to continue to not sleep. Okay, thankfully I
- 6:56Speaker 2: started my wedding DJ business a year ago. I want
- 6:59Speaker 2: to focus on that. But I think I'll be able
- 7:01Speaker 2: to get by, you know. But what what's next is
- 7:05Speaker 2: not don't be waiting for some big reveal.
- 7:08Speaker 1: I'm just going to be hanging around. Okay.
- 7:10Speaker 2: What is next for Big ninety eight point seven and
- 7:13Speaker 2: Pike and Amanda in the morning, Well that'll come to
- 7:15Speaker 2: an end. But we do have a plan. And that's
- 7:18Speaker 2: why it's been so many months in the works. Amanda's
- 7:21Speaker 2: because we knew that we didn't want to just leave
- 7:23Speaker 2: not just a company hanging, but the listeners, people who
- 7:26Speaker 2: listen to the station, and the show. So we do
- 7:28Speaker 2: have the succession plan in place. We've been working on
- 7:32Speaker 2: it and we're gonna announce what that is coming up
- 7:35Speaker 2: in how about nine minutes.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I think that sounds good. And thank you for everything
- 7:41Speaker 3: that you knew. Sorry, I think I said a lot there,
- 7:44Speaker 3: but thank you. But I think you're just being vulnerable.
- 7:47Speaker 3: You're being honest and that is the most important. And
- 7:50Speaker 3: we all support you. I think everybody listening, of course sad.
- 7:53Speaker 3: There's a lot of sad emojis and people who are
- 7:55Speaker 3: going to miss you, but there's not one person who
- 7:57Speaker 3: does not support you in your decision.
- 7:59Speaker 1: And one of them.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Thanks Amanda, and I do appreciate you. Wouldn't want to
- 8:04Speaker 2: do a show with anybody else. Love you and love
- 8:08Speaker 2: you more. What's happening next for this station and this show.
- 8:13Speaker 2: They are here and we will introduce them coming up
- 8:16Speaker 2: in nine minutes and Amanda in the morning on Big seven.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen from Cedar Rapids give it up for
- 8:24Speaker 2: Gabe Glitna.
- 8:27Speaker 1: But we're so excited that you are here.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Yeah, it's there's been little like hints I think of
- 8:32Speaker 5: me being around and like in the building and doing
- 8:35Speaker 5: some remotes and stuff. But it's really cool to actually
- 8:38Speaker 5: be on the show and get to chit chat for
- 8:40Speaker 5: the first time.
- 8:41Speaker 1: So I'm pretty excited about that little backstory.
- 8:43Speaker 3: He's been in here. He has been kind of following
- 8:45Speaker 3: along with what we do every single day, and you
- 8:47Speaker 3: slid right into this. In fact, I couldn't think of
- 8:51Speaker 3: a better replacement. And by replacement, you guys are kind
- 8:53Speaker 3: of the same. It's been hilarious. You might have caught
- 8:56Speaker 3: me a few times on air for the past few
- 8:57Speaker 3: weeks like say, Nick, hey, guys, because it's like, oh God,
- 9:00Speaker 3: there is another guy in here. But it has been
- 9:02Speaker 3: it's been awesome and it's going to continue to be amazing.
- 9:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm super glad to be here, coming from Cedar
- 9:08Speaker 5: Rapids or whatever.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I grew up in Minneapolis.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Oh, we should probably say this was like the number
- 9:15Speaker 3: one question that we asked and I did this on
- 9:17Speaker 3: behalf of everybody listening real quick. Who did you cheer
- 9:21Speaker 3: for yesterday for Sunday football?
- 9:22Speaker 1: Oh? Diehard Vikes fan.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Die.
- 9:26Speaker 2: It's been a long time that this show on this
- 9:28Speaker 2: station has ever had I don't think it's ever had
- 9:31Speaker 2: a Vikings fan on it, to be honest. So I'm sure,
- 9:33Speaker 2: there's a lot of people listening that will be glad
- 9:35Speaker 2: to hear some actual Viking perspective rather than just constant
- 9:40Speaker 2: hate from my Packer fan self. But listen, Gabe, it's
- 9:43Speaker 2: been good to have you. You've been in the studio
- 9:45Speaker 2: learning kind of the behind the scenes of the show,
- 9:47Speaker 2: in the stage and how it goes. So we haven't
- 9:49Speaker 2: acknowledged him yet, but we wanted to wait till right now.
- 9:51Speaker 2: How do you feel jumping on the air after that
- 9:54Speaker 2: emotional announcement?
- 9:56Speaker 1: Oh, this most awkward thing I've ever been a part of.
- 9:58Speaker 5: But in general, it's been just it feels like a
- 10:01Speaker 5: long time just coming. So it's kind of cool to
- 10:04Speaker 5: finally get to be a part of the conversation. I've
- 10:06Speaker 5: been running the board and sitting where Pike's sitting currently
- 10:10Speaker 5: or whatever, and just kind of pushing the buttons. I
- 10:12Speaker 5: felt like a glorified like third round draft pick quarterback
- 10:15Speaker 5: who had to sit out for the first ten games of.
- 10:18Speaker 1: The season rush things. Yeah, exactly.
- 10:20Speaker 5: You know, you left me in the oven over there
- 10:22Speaker 5: to bake, and I feel like I get to spread
- 10:24Speaker 5: the wings.
- 10:24Speaker 1: A little bit here. Turkey is done. That's right, Well,
- 10:26Speaker 1: tell us about yourself.
- 10:27Speaker 2: I know, I said you were living in Iowa, but
- 10:30Speaker 2: you are a Minnesota native.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Yes, yes, I grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota or Crystal
- 10:35Speaker 5: for anyone who has heard of that.
- 10:37Speaker 1: We just call it the cities. Yeah, that's right down there. Yeah.
- 10:41Speaker 5: And then I did some radio in Wanona, Minnesota, which
- 10:44Speaker 5: is in like the Southeastern corner for anyone who doesn't know,
- 10:46Speaker 5: right next to Lacrosse, Wisconsin. I did that for ten
- 10:49Speaker 5: years and then got a job in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
- 10:52Speaker 5: I did that for just under three years, and there
- 10:56Speaker 5: was just you know, someone who slid my DMS about.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Potentially getting up here. Amanda. No, it wasn't no, no, no,
- 11:03Speaker 1: years ago.
- 11:04Speaker 2: It was two months before I told her I was
- 11:06Speaker 2: leading right exactly.
- 11:08Speaker 1: What the hen Hey, I hear, you're amazing save me.
- 11:11Speaker 2: No.
- 11:12Speaker 5: And strangely enough, it was my wife and ies like
- 11:16Speaker 5: dating anniversary, not our married anniversary, but our dating anniversary
- 11:20Speaker 5: when I got the DM just about the job, and
- 11:23Speaker 5: then we were kind of like, wait, would we really
- 11:25Speaker 5: do this? And we kind of just started talking back
- 11:28Speaker 5: and forth the person who messaged me, and then I
- 11:31Speaker 5: got to meet Amanda, and that was really the selling point.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I think when really how so?
- 11:35Speaker 5: Yeah, so I that's one of the behind the scenes
- 11:39Speaker 5: things that maybe people don't always realize right away. A
- 11:41Speaker 5: man and I've been talking since early September, I think, yes, absolutely,
- 11:45Speaker 5: and we've gotten to talk a lot and get to
- 11:47Speaker 5: hang out just you know, on the on the Zoom
- 11:49Speaker 5: meetings and coming up here for interviews. And that was
- 11:52Speaker 5: a big selling point, was just she's so cool and
- 11:55Speaker 5: and awesome and.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Just I'm glad to be here. I feel kind of
- 11:58Speaker 1: bad though.
- 11:58Speaker 5: Pike's really kind of become my buddy, like the best
- 12:02Speaker 5: of you guys are.
- 12:03Speaker 2: We tore up Frank's lounge evening. I was giving him
- 12:06Speaker 2: the lowdown and the whole city. But great guy, great,
- 12:08Speaker 2: His wife is fantastic. I think I think we'll fit
- 12:11Speaker 2: right in. We both know all of the words to
- 12:13Speaker 2: fifty cents, hate It or Love It?
- 12:15Speaker 1: Yep.
- 12:15Speaker 2: So that big bonding moment, Yeah, that really sold me.
- 12:18Speaker 2: But now, just your big hockey fan, right.
- 12:20Speaker 5: Love hockey? Yeah, pretty die hard Minnesota wild fan. I
- 12:24Speaker 5: very rarely like miss a game on TV. If I do,
- 12:26Speaker 5: it's because I there's something else going on. But yeah,
- 12:29Speaker 5: I'm a pretty die hard hockey fan and I'm I'm
- 12:31Speaker 5: looking for a high school around here to kind of
- 12:33Speaker 5: jump on the bandwagon for their hockey team.
- 12:35Speaker 1: We have some eligibility left right, you need a third
- 12:40Speaker 1: line center. I got you covered.
- 12:41Speaker 3: But we've got so many great places to show you around.
- 12:45Speaker 3: We can't wait to get to know you. It is
- 12:47Speaker 3: just going to be so much fun for everybody. You
- 12:49Speaker 3: are married, and uh, how many kids? Cats?
- 12:53Speaker 5: Do you have a couple? I don't know if we
- 12:55Speaker 5: need to kind of I don't know if we got
- 12:57Speaker 5: to going on that, but we have a couple of cats.
- 12:59Speaker 3: He's got an animal family, and I love it. Your
- 13:01Speaker 3: wife is amazing. She is already here, ready to dive
- 13:05Speaker 3: into it, and she has a great job already.
- 13:06Speaker 1: And we're just so excited for you guys.
- 13:08Speaker 5: Yeah, we're just glad all the packing is undone. It's
- 13:11Speaker 5: the worst thing in the world. Yeah, worst thing in
- 13:13Speaker 5: the world is moving, for sure.
- 13:15Speaker 1: But you got everything up here you're living in. We
- 13:17Speaker 1: don't need to disclose your exact address.
- 13:19Speaker 2: South South Fargo, south of south how the south is
- 13:22Speaker 2: against that's true.
- 13:23Speaker 5: I'm a big I guess Davy's high school guy now,
- 13:25Speaker 5: because that's around My neighborhood is what I'll say, So
- 13:29Speaker 5: shout out to anyone who goes to Davies.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Do they have a high school hockey team?
- 13:32Speaker 2: I forget did they all at this point, because if
- 13:36Speaker 2: you're trying to coach, right, that's where I.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Would assume I'm not. Well, you go be questioning it.
- 13:42Speaker 3: But I'm pretty sure yes they do.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Yes, Davis has a big it's a big high school, right, yes, Well,
- 13:47Speaker 4: if you maybe want to get in there, I'm sure
- 13:49Speaker 4: somebody listening.
- 13:50Speaker 1: I go as a fan to watch. You don't know, No, no,
- 13:53Speaker 1: I don't want to come. There's that.
- 13:54Speaker 3: There's the fargo for us.
- 13:55Speaker 1: We get to cover.
- 13:56Speaker 3: This is going to be amazing in this next chapter
- 13:58Speaker 3: on Big ninety eight point seven is going to be seamless.
- 14:00Speaker 3: It's gonna be awesome, and we're so excited that you're
- 14:02Speaker 3: a part of it.
- 14:03Speaker 1: I'm glad to be here.
- 14:04Speaker 5: Yeah, I feel very strange being in here at whilst
- 14:08Speaker 5: Amanda is going through the strangest roller culture life thing.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Hey you guys, I've been through odd. I got this,
- 14:15Speaker 1: nothing to see you.
- 14:16Speaker 3: Later, get out of here, right, just just served.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Her the divorce papers. She's already got the new guy
- 14:20Speaker 2: living in the house.
- 14:22Speaker 1: Brutal, brutal.
- 14:23Speaker 2: Well, Gab, it's gonna be awesome to watch what you
- 14:25Speaker 2: do with the show and the station. I think it's
- 14:27Speaker 2: in great hands, and I wouldn't have wanted it any
- 14:29Speaker 2: other way than to leave it with somebody like you.
- 14:31Speaker 1: I appreciate you man, Thank you very much, and
- 14:33Speaker 2: I'll be around you have any questions about, you know, Amanda,
- 14:36Speaker 2: specifically some of her nuances, I'm happy to help you out.
