- Justin Stice: Yeah. Hello and welcome to the Cultivator Podcast. We've got just kind of a special edition today. I'm here with Justin, and ⁓ we're just gonna talk about our upcoming fundraiser gala. And the reality of the world we live in is the stuff that we want to do costs money. ⁓ buildings cost money, everything costs money, it feels like these days. And so ⁓ this is gonna be our first kind of attempt at a gala. And so I'm just gonna in the kind of weeks leading up to it, just kinda we're just gonna have a chat with Justin and we'll get this out there and hopefully it'll answer the questions that you have about it. Yeah. I'm excited. Talk to me about kind of ⁓ give me a little bit of the history of kind of the gala, how we got to this point, kind of tell me some of that story. Yeah. So I think it's been one of those things where we've wanted to do one of these for a while and just haven't worked out. We've tried it and just different things ⁓ just didn't line up. And so this is kind of the first year where it's kind of worked out where Man, we've gotten some relationships with the people at Adelphos wine cellars. And so they're hosting it. ⁓ we're so thankful for them. Huge shout out to one ⁓ to Adelphos. If you haven't been there, you need to go there. I'm excited. A part of the night there is going to be some extra wine tastings for those of you that enjoy some wine. ⁓ and so phenomenal ⁓ families that own that. So got that connection, so had that secured, and then just kind of going from there. We've been putting this thing together where it really is, I'm excited to create a space for people to kind of get a full spectrum and breadth of all that we do. ⁓ I think what's been one of the frustrating, I don't say frustrating, one of the hard difficult things is people really understanding what we do. And so I think for the gala, it's an opportunity to expose people to kind of the bigger picture of all that we do. ⁓ people have little bits and pieces. And I believe this is going to be one of the the first times ⁓ in almost I don't know how many years. Yeah. That that people have been able they're gonna be able to kind of just see a big full picture of all the things that we do. Cool. ⁓ so that's kind of where that came from is this idea that we want to have an event that's gonna be yearly from now on that we're able to invite people in because there's still a lot of people around the city that don't even know who we are, what we exist, or even what we do. Or if they they think we know what we do, we maybe do that, but we also do like ten other things with that. Right. So we don't forget to do this. We should do this a couple of times, but give me the details, when it is, where it is, all of that. Yeah. So it's gonna be Thursday ⁓ evening, October 22nd at 630 PM ⁓ at Adelphos Wine Cellars. And on this, we'll have a link where it'll take you to the landing page where you can purchase. So we're gonna have individual tickets for sale. ⁓ so you can buy those. And then there's kind of three tiers of sponsorship. So you have the basic the the the first one is just buying a table. ⁓ and there's eight. ⁓ spot at a table and so that that's a thousand dollars. And then the next tier up is twenty five hundred and you get two ⁓ tables for that. And then the third level up is five thousand and you get two tables and then plus kind of with that we're gonna market and kind of give you shout outs throughout the year of all the things that we're doing. ⁓ and kind of do some marketing and saying hey it was possible because of you or your business or your family and And so that'll help kind of promote and market you throughout the year. Not just that night of, but kind of this continual like, hey man, we couldn't do this ⁓ year without the the help of the sponsors. Yeah, and then also with that I'm excited. ⁓ with the evening, we're gonna cast on grill. ⁓ is catering. I went to lunch there today. Nice. ⁓ I'd go there probably probably too not too often, but ⁓ love that. So cast on grill's gonna be there. And then I'm excited, junior Vasquez. ⁓ incredible famous local musician. Right. And then ⁓ him and then actually his son Micah, who's a buddy of mine in his nineties country cover band. Okay. Are gonna be there. ⁓ and doing some ⁓ some music and entertainment for us. And we there's a potential, it's not secured yet. We we have there's we're working out finally the details of a of a possible speaker. ⁓ that's gonna be really cool. ⁓ so that it's like one little piece that we're still working on. But even without the speaker, it's gonna be a great night. ⁓ And so I'm excited for people to come hear kind of our heartbeat ⁓ and what we're about and what we're doing. So I love that. I love that. ⁓ okay, so I know that ⁓ you and I know this 'cause we talk about it all the time, but like just paint us a picture of I I don't want to ask you to paint a picture of the breadth of what you could see co-op being. ⁓ because we don't we don't have time for that. But ⁓ just kind of paint for me a picture, fill in some of the the the details of what it is that Kingdom Co-op kind of currently does, some of the different things that people might not know about so that they know kind of what this ministry is supporting. Yeah. And so so for us it's it's it's been years of discovering and letting this kind of fill out as we go. And ultimately we've come right now. I'm gonna say this right now, there's an understanding of man, we we kind of are here to be a resource for cultivators. That's why this whole thing to say, hey, this is what we feel God's calling us to do, this is what's stirring. And we want to say, Hey, how can we help? And that looks so many different ways. That may be ⁓ relationship, that we just have relationship with you, encouraging you, loving you. ⁓ that could be just one of the rhythms that we have of kind of within our whole ecosystem, there's certain rhythms of gathering and being with each other. That might be or ⁓ really one of the big ones is for us is resources. And when I say resources, a primary one is the building we have. love it or hate it, we we have at times it's both. we we have this amazing building ⁓ that man, we are able to give r ⁓ space at a lower than market value to startup nonprofits or even existent nonprofits to get that kind of there. So traditionally what it's looked like, and this is kind of where people get confused is there was a a nonprofit ministry here in Lubbock called the Hope ⁓ called Hope Community of Shalom. ⁓ they established in 2005. I became the executive director of that ⁓ in 2018. And then in the midst of that, we had been planting the grove. ⁓ we were meeting at Sugar Browns when we were on the corner here. And then kind of as things grew and merged together, all of a sudden there just became this it it became pretty evident till lot of people, the boards, everything else say like, man, why don't we just kind of mix these together a little bit? And then with that, this building was given over to us, what is now co-op church, ⁓ or co op whatever term we want to use. Whatever term. And so since then it's kind of now looks like we are a place that offers a resource, either be building or whatever else, to multiple different ministries. And things that have been going on with Hope Community ⁓ where we have a meal on Sunday nights where we feed about 125 people. ⁓ Also, we have Hope Clothes, ⁓ where we give away about over 25,000 ⁓ items of clothing a year. ⁓ there's an after-school program called Elevate Hope, where we have kids from Brown and Camorona Wilson that are bust over. ⁓ that they're here on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, where they have college kids ⁓ loving on them, tutoring them, just All the things. Investing in them. Yeah. ⁓ so those are kind of the primary staple ones that we've had. ⁓ and then since then, man, it's kind of grown into ⁓ some other things. We have a thing called Hope Bikes, where people donate ⁓ old bikes, and our friend JJ works on them, and then we either turn around and sells them, or we have an earn a bike thing where people can earn a bike. There's that. There's also ⁓ you're gonna tell me 'cause there's so many I can miss. Well and And the the reality is, Justin, I think one of the reasons why so many people have the hard time wrapping their mind around kind of the breadth of what is done here is because I don't even know that we know the full extent of it. Right. Like our goal is not to know. It's not ⁓ it's not a heavy-handed micromanaging. It is like we want to be a resource for particularly locationally for the heart of level of neighborhood. Yes, correct. You know, so like The meal and we've we've had these conversations, the meal meets a a a a very distinct need. Like we have people in this neighborhood that a a nice, good meal, not only do they get their bellies full, but they don't have to pay for that meal. Yep. You know? I mean, you think about back to school, we're just coming off back to school and how much money was spent on new clothes for that. And so if that money doesn't have to be spent by a family in this neighborhood on new clothes and then come and get that, like what does that do for their budget? Exactly. Right. Yeah. ⁓ you know, we did we did some some demographic work a couple of years ago that showed that you're twice as likely to have a bicycle as your primary mode of transportation in this neighborhood to get to work, to get to wherever you're going. And so kind of hope bikes was birthed out of that. And I mean, so and all of those things cost. Like ⁓ the there's a l a lot of donation, right? We got great partner churches that come. Like I I mean we had Jate and ⁓ two time defending football six A football champions that came and they serve a meal every year and it's great for them and and First Baptist and Yeah and Calvary Baptist Calvary Baptist is a great partner. ⁓ and so we're so Saint Luke's Methodists so many of them. ⁓ and so we're so thankful and I'm and so I'm excited that these partner churches are gonna hopefully be there. First Baptist Floyd Ada, ⁓ First Methodist or yeah, Lot. I mean there's just so many partner we're so thankful for them. And so it's almost this idea of getting everybody in the room together. Mm-hmm Because I think you get to see the the ⁓ man, there's a lot going on. And there's a lot of people that are helping make it happen. Right. And that's what I really love. It's not one little group here, the other group. There's just so many people saying, Yeah, we want to see this thing flourish and take off. Yeah, so there is a definitely a fundraiser piece. If you want to pay more than five thousand, we we'll find you a couple of tables. ⁓ but I also think there's beauty in the Floyd Ada Baptists coming and hanging out with the St. Luke's Methodists. And I mean, just seeing that this kingdom that we're trying to be cultivators of is so much bigger. Yeah, and and that's what I love about us. And I always tell people ⁓ one of the one of my favorite times is on a Sunday night during the mill, we may have a ⁓ a certain church denomination that kind of has certain way they do things, right? And then that's awesome. And then we might have another group that's there to pray with people. That is completely out of the maybe realm of what how this church and I love it because we're sitting in the room and everybody's there because they want to serve and love our friends in the neighborhood. And so for me, it just gets a bigger picture of the kingdom. Yeah. And so that's my hope and prayer is this is you got we got so many different people from denominations, not that that no denomination, haven't been in church in years. Right. But they believe in the kingdom. Yeah. And they believe that that God is doing something. And ⁓ and we get to be a part of that. And so One of the big kind of programs, ministries that we're going to be fundraising a lot for and pushing for is Hope for the Hub. ⁓ so Hope for the Hub was started, it was phenomenal, man. It's one of the it's a workforce development program. and there was funding from the city that kind of got it up and going and happened. And then that funding changed and wasn't there anymore. And so we've had to push pause. And so, man, that's honestly one of the biggest things that I'm longing to see us get the resources back in place to see this because It's one thing and I love it about giving people food and clothes and everything else, but this program specifically is getting job training and placement which can change the trajectory of ⁓ someone's life and their family's life. And so, man, that's one thing that I'm we're really gonna highlight a lot at the Gala is Hope for the Hub. And man, there's so many beautiful success stories from that. And it's too good of a of a ⁓ I don't even call it a program. It's too good of a life-changing thing for us not to be doing it. And we just need some we need help financially to make it happen. Yeah. Yeah. I I you know, I think one of the things, Justin, that that attracts kind of cross-denominational lines to what we're doing is that we're trying to legitimately be good news to our community and not There there's a lot of competition in the institutional church, right? There's a lot of, hey, we're growing, but that means somebody else is shrinking because there's not a lot of evangelism discipleship really happening. ⁓ but I think one of the things why people latch onto us, the Saint Luke's and the you know, and the Floyd Ada Baptist and all of that, is because I think we're doing some of the stuff that they want to do. Does that make sense? And I think they are. I'm in a lot of but we get to kind of be an extension of the things that they're doing. Absolutely. Yeah. And we I mean, 'cause we you know, I mean if you were to compare our Sunday morning numbers to theirs, like we don't compare to that. But kind of the influence and impact that we're able to have because we look at it as what's good news in this community. And for some it's a meal, and for some it's clothes, and for some it's like they want to get out of the station that they're in. And and I mean, I I didn't have much to do with it, but man, hope ⁓ for the hub just always seemed like there was just a lot of energy around here and a lot of positive things that came out of that. Yeah. And so that that one specifically I'm really excited about kind of sharing, man, the impact that that had and can have. ⁓ and it just it's just kind of we've had we've still like push the pause button and I'm so ready just to be able to press that like unpress the pause button and get it going and rolling. But that's a great program. It's an extensive program, but it also costs money. Yeah. And we you know we just got to a point where partnerships just kind of fell apart with that and weren't able to do that. Exactly. And I think sitting here and talking about forever, I mean, I'll be honest, like fundraising is been hard for me. Not and but now it used to be. Now I'm kind of like, dude, you know what? God's not short on cash. Right. He's really not. And so now, and it's not like I'm raising money so I can have a big salary. There's not that's not money that we're raising to like do this. It's but it I feel like now God's given a lot of clarity about like, man, man, when people steward and have this generosity kind of thing about what God's given them. And I love the people that there we have some people that are extremely generous. And I love how they talk about like, man, this isn't my money anyways. This is just God's. And he's asked me to steward it well. And I love when I get to have this conversation with people saying, Yeah, dude, this is this is God's. He's just he's entrusted it to be a good steward of it. ⁓ and we believe in what you guys are doing, here you go. And I've it so for it's and I've seen God show up over and over again. in that way. And it's been so cool. And so all the kind of fear and the weirdness that I used to have about trying to raise funds for this thing, I'm like, nah, like, dude, we yeah, we need money because we th it takes money to do this. And it's not like we're gonna take your money and do something weird with it, wrong with it. We're just gonna be continuing to reveal the kingdom in so many different ways. And also for us, it's gonna be able that we've had several new ministries that have come around that we'd be able to help help. So like turn were artisans. Mm-hmm. ⁓ if you listen to that podcast a couple weeks ago, ⁓ with the Millers, man, phenomenal. And so we had some money coming in with them, but like the d one of our dreams, sorry, get back to this whole yeah, one of the questions. Is we would love to be at a place as Kingdom Co op, or somebody comes to us with this idea of this thing, this stirring, and we're like, Yeah, we we we feel that we sense that. We wanna help kind of Coach, train, whatever else, and then hey, here's some $5,000, $10,000 seed money to help you get started. Well, and and Justin, one of the things I've learned about you over the years is people do love to give money to what you're doing. Like that just is. We've had this conversation. It's a matter of getting you in front of people to do that, right? ⁓ and I think one of the things with this, Gala, is like the reality is we want to have money to be able to launch out other people. Not I mean, when you look at something like you look at Turnrow Artisans and you look at clothed in gray, so ⁓ amazing people that are doing amazing things, but don't have the kind of personality that you do that's gonna sit across from somebody and says, This is what I need, this is what we're working on. Yeah. And and we don't have any desire to build a bigger building or any of those things. We're not trying to, you know, I mean, we're not trying to build anything except to we would love to have cash on hand so that when somebody comes with a great idea. We don't have to go, man, we love that. Could you come back in two years when we have exact you know, cash on hand? Yeah. ⁓ a as we're as we're sitting here talking, Justin, I would we we probably need to just do this and tell some of the stories of like the giving of the building and COVID happening after that. And 'cause I mean I some of you that watch this might not know this, but like our building that we were gifted was built in nineteen twenty nine. We're coming up on a hundred years. From when Asbury Methodist Church was built. And I don't know if you know this, but in the last hundred years there's been a lot of technological changes in the world in construction. we we fight it all the time with our bathrooms. But like the reality is we have a hundred year old building. Yeah. And we're not trying to, you know, do anything crazy with it, but we have plumbing problems and we had, you know, we had to do a major remodel in the sanctuary because the panels were coming down. Yeah, ceiling tiles were coming down. ⁓ and so like one of the things that I like about doing this is I think it feels West Texas. Right. I mean it our tell tell what our theme is. ⁓ it's ⁓ harvest of hope. Okay. ⁓ and and with that, that idea of harvest of hope and the whole little vibe as well with that, with the theme is pearl snaps and pearls. I'm like, man, we're West Texas. We love I love pearl snaps. ⁓ I don't wear pearls. Pearls that much, but you know It's more pearl snaps for the guys, pearls for the gals. If you don't if you don't get that, but you do you. You do you. But but I love that. And and also what's really cool about this, and and me and my buddy Adam, we shot a video that's gonna be shown at the Gala and it we we're actually in front of a small town ⁓ farmers co op because here in West Texas we understand a a farmers co op and how it works, right? You have all these individual farmers that have their own farmland, but the co-op is the place that they pull resources together ⁓ for buying power, for resources, for equipment, for whatever else. And then it helps them. And so it kind of clicked to me as like, man, that's a great way to explain a little bit wh who we are and what we do. Yeah. ⁓ because with this building we've been given and ⁓ man we have fifteen other ministries and organizations that use this. Yeah. Some of them that we operate and run, but ⁓ several of them we don't. Right. And all we do is we offer them space to do what they do. ⁓ and that's for me is this idea of a co-op of like, hey, we're not here to lord over or run this to you. We want to be a resource to you and say, Hey, what do you need? How can we help? And right now, one of the ways that we can help a lot of ministries is by giving them space to do to to office out of, to do ministries, programs out of, whatever that is. And so I think it's just really cool when people can kind of get an understanding of how we know a a small town farmers co op works and then understanding that's kind of a little bit why we're called Kingdom Co op. Yeah. ⁓ is because that's been your kind of thing from the start. Yeah. And so Well and one of the things that that we're adamant, we're very adamant about, i is is the the gospel must be contextual. Yep. Like good news to the Heart of Lebak neighborhood is different from good news in shallow water. And you know, I mean ultimately the core of who Jesus is is the same, but like you have to contextualize it. And so that's one of the things I love about what we're doing with the gala, you know? I it's a West Texas thing because hey, I mean I'm not a West Texan, right? And so I grew up somewhere else and I will tell you that up north the funerals look different. I mean I mean that's my world. Like a starch pair of blue jeans and a good pair of cowboy boots is a dress outfit for a funeral out here in West Texas. Like you do that up in Illinois, you're gonna get weird looks right. But but like and so like even the theme of that is is just encouraging people like don't don't get a tux. Don't Don't do that. It's not that kind of gala. It's a West Texas gala. Exactly. It is. And so when you say gala, like it's a West Texas Gala, get a Pearl snapshirt on if you got one, some pearls and ⁓ it West Texas nice. I g I guess everybody gonna call that. ⁓ but man, I I I'm really excited for so many because I I still believe there's a lot of people around the city that still don't know who we are, that we even exist. And then if they do kind of heritage, they don't really fully understand all that we do. And so, I mean that if that's you, man, I wanna encourage you just come buy buy an individual ticket, buy a table, sponsor the five I mean, whatever that is. And so I I'm gonna take a second. We're this gonna be weird. All my friend I'm I'm gonna send I'm gonna text this to a lot of my friends that I haven't talked to in years, and I'm gonna text this to you, and I'm gonna first of all, I'm gonna see if you actually watch this or not. But man, I would love for you to come. ⁓ and not for anything on me or the styces or whatever else, but just to see. What the Lord is doing ⁓ in the city. ⁓ and it and I tried very much to like it's nothing, it's just the God's doing something really cool. And as as much as there's been times where we just kind of be like walk away and be done with this thing and guys like, no, we s we still have some stuff to do here. And so man, I'm I'm just gonna I'm gonna challenge and encourage you guys to come hang out with us on October twenty second ⁓ at six thirty and come with a generous heart. It sounds weird, but come man, just come for the ability to just kind of see, man, God's doing something really cool in the city. And for us is you get a part to play in that. Yeah. You get to contribute in it. Okay, so date again. Just Thursday, October twenty second s yeah, October twenty second. Okay. At six thirty PM. Okay. At Adelphos. Yep. It's ⁓ Which is out south Indiana. ⁓ They took my golf course away. That was the the Stone Stone Gate. Because they would they would let people who are ministers play for free. So that was where I always played golf. Yeah. So it's gonna be at Adelphos, ⁓ which is phenomenal. If you haven't been up there, it's incredible. ⁓ Cast iron Grill is doing the food. If you don't know, haven't you had Cast Iron Grill, like ⁓ I'm so excited. It's gonna be so good. ⁓ I mean, that is West Texas, right? That is that is to me like that is I I love it. Well, and also, man, ⁓ both of these businesses are just Kingdom minded people. That's what I love. That's what's been really cool. The connections we've had is these mean these the way they operate and run their businesses are very much just kingdom minded and they just have a heart for the kingdom. And so that's been really cool for us to connect with them. ⁓ and just yeah, I'm excited to show that. And then entertainment, ⁓ junior Vazquez ⁓ Micah Vasquez and his band, ⁓ Gone Country. ⁓ it's gonna be a fun night. So it is gonna be ⁓ a lot of just looking at stuff. We're gonna have kind of ⁓ A lot of the ministries that we are part of and that have they're gonna be kind of around on the sides and you're gonna get the experience and kind of have conversations about all that they do. So that's gonna be a cool aspect of it. ⁓ I'm for somehow I don't know if this is gonna happen. ⁓ but I would love to have like a ⁓ line dance competition. I don't know if we can make that happen or not. Ugh. But Steist knows how to throw a party. I bet you. I bet you. So it is it's gonna be a lot of fun and it's also gonna be very ⁓ impactful. Okay, so you talk about tables, but individual tickets. If somebody wants to come, what's that look like? So you same you'll go to the same link ⁓ and you can buy individual tickets. So individual tickets are hundred and fifty dollars ⁓ a piece. And so well, why is it hundred fifty dollars? Well, because we a lot of that coverage is a fundraiser. Don't apologize for that. Okay, see I'm still working on it. It's it's it's a fundraiser. ⁓ but it's also gonna be a fun evening. Like it's I I'll tell you. I mean you get to be around this guy, right? I'll be there. And I don't add much of that, but I mean, like the people that we're doing kind of life in ministry with, a lot of these really generous people are gonna be there. Yeah. ⁓ a lot of our ministries are gonna be there. Like here's the reality. We believe in what we're doing. Yeah. We believe in the people we're doing that with. And we want to champion them. Yeah. And you know, we've we've had this conversation. There are great things happening here. Yeah. But if the finances dry up, they don't happen. Like we When we got and again, this is a story to be told. Like when we got this building, it was trashed in all I mean, it's a three story educational wing. Thirty thousand square feet. And and like we had I mean, we had snacks from the eighties in one of the rooms. We had freezers, like there there was a mess. And this for a season, this was the anchor to the heart of Lebek neighborhood. The w the Asbury Methodist Church was. Yeah. And over the years, that just kind of dissipated. And one of the things that we get to do that in this building with that history. Yeah. But it costs. I mean, that's just the reality. I don't know if you've looked at your ⁓ City of Lubbock utilities bill recently or whoever you chose for that, but that just keeps going up when the temperatures are 99 degrees every day. And the reality is if that goes away, we there's a lot of ministries that are going to have to go find a place for rent that's going to be more expensive than. Exactly. And so that's why I say we don't need to be ashamed that it's a fundraiser because we want to have money in there so that that doesn't happen. Yeah, exactly. And so I think with that is just realizing, man, there there's so much good, like good news that is happening ⁓ through this, through just having the space to do it, and then also just the people. And so yeah, it's just it's It's like we talked about, man, whenever it's a yeah, let's let's do that, it's awesome, then we have something to come alongside them, not only just our encouragement and coaching or whatever else, but like, ⁓ yeah, we here's some we got a little bit of cash to help you as well. ⁓ and so yeah, I'm excited. I mean, there's you know, the the cool thing to me about something like this is because we are decentralized, I don't see all these people that much. And so I'm excited about that. Yeah. And I don't I'm not even gonna bat an eye at 150 bucks because I mean, I get to hang out with people that I like. And if he texts you And you're one of his friends, remember the kind of parties that this guy can throw. Like I'm gonna tell you, you'll get your hundred and fifty bucks worth. Like I don't have any doubt about that. I mean the meal will be good, the entertainment will be good. Any time to do that, that's that's a you know Yeah 150 bucks for a night out with with people that have a lot of fun and it's gonna be good. And man, and and the thing is, it's just gonna be for me, it's you're gonna see the kingdom on display. ⁓ you're gonna see how God is working and moving. You're gonna hear stories of people's lives that have been transformed and changed. ⁓ and it's just gonna be a really cool night to see ⁓ how God has worked and moved in this whole thing. You know, it it one of the things that we're kinda I think I feel like this season is we're moving toward is really kind of trying to get businesses together. Yeah. Kingdom Commerce Kingdom businesses to just see each other. Like I'm not one of those that's like I don't need to put a fish on my t shirt company to say, Hey, I'm a Christian, buy for me. But like there are a lot of people who are doing great things in the business world. Yeah. And there are a lot of people that ⁓ really have given their businesses over to the Lord, not just from a I'm tithing off of this, but like legitimately using it for good things. And yeah, I know there's so many more out there, right? I mean, and it just just it was Part of this is just about getting us out there as a resource. And we did learn from one of our board members who's a CPA.
