- 0:38the athletes of the 2024
- 0:39Legends Masters CrossFit Games.
- 0:43And on this show,
- 0:44you get two for the price of one.
- 0:47And everybody loves a BOGO.
- 0:49So we have Sandra Hinkle and Denise Moore.
- 0:51What's going on, ladies?
- 0:53Hello.
- 0:54Hi.
- 0:54How are you?
- 0:56It's wonderful to talk to you.
- 0:58Yeah, good to see you again.
- 0:59Denise has been stalking our
- 1:02chats and giving great
- 1:04information in those,
- 1:06and we love her for that.
- 1:08Cindy,
- 1:09I actually met both of you at the
- 1:10exact same time.
- 1:11Right.
- 1:13You guys were standing in
- 1:14line at the check-in of
- 1:15Legends last year and got
- 1:18to meet you guys there.
- 1:20That was a fun interview.
- 1:21Yeah, that was good.
- 1:23Yeah,
- 1:23and what I learned in that interview
- 1:25is you guys are very good friends,
- 1:28but you are polar opposites
- 1:29when it comes to workouts.
- 1:34Kind of, yeah.
- 1:35You're more strength and I'm
- 1:37more gymnastics type.
- 1:38She's very gymnastic-y.
- 1:40So if people did not see the
- 1:42check-in interview from Legends last year,
- 1:45I asked them what are they
- 1:46most looking forward to
- 1:49on the weekend and Denise
- 1:51said a barbell and Cindy said gymnastics.
- 1:58That's right.
- 1:59Yeah.
- 2:00So how do two ladies who are
- 2:03polar opposites end up
- 2:05becoming such close friends
- 2:07and training partners?
- 2:09Oh, my God.
- 2:10I think that we just she
- 2:11forces me to do barbell
- 2:13stuff and then I force her
- 2:14to do more gymnastic stuff.
- 2:16And then I'll help her with that.
- 2:18And she'll help me with the barbell stuff.
- 2:21So, yeah, I'm actually scared of her.
- 2:27She basically, two weeks ago,
- 2:30I was working on handstand walk.
- 2:33And my coach, who's the owner of the gym,
- 2:35Matt, he was helping with handstand walk.
- 2:40And she came over because
- 2:41she was working out in the class.
- 2:43And she looks at me and gives me a drill.
- 2:45She goes, come on, let's try harder.
- 2:49And I was like, oh, my God, okay.
- 2:52I think I said just be aggressive.
- 2:54Be aggressive.
- 2:58So step back here.
- 3:00Denise,
- 3:01you're in the 65 plus division and
- 3:04you're working on handstand walks.
- 3:07I'm trying.
- 3:08How?
- 3:09I don't care.
- 3:10You're doing, you're trying it.
- 3:12That is so freaking cool.
- 3:15Thank you.
- 3:15I just learned the pegboard
- 3:18like two Fridays ago.
- 3:19I had never done it before
- 3:21and I tried the pegboard and I was like,
- 3:23hey, this isn't too bad.
- 3:27What CrossFit is doing to
- 3:29flip the idea of age on its
- 3:31head is so awesome.
- 3:35Yeah.
- 3:35I mean, just,
- 3:36it was probably five years
- 3:37ago when Denise was kicking
- 3:39up to a handstand against
- 3:40the wall and could not do a
- 3:41handstand pushup.
- 3:43Like you did maybe one handstand pushup
- 3:45every two minutes.
- 3:47Right.
- 3:47Yeah.
- 3:48And now she's great at them
- 3:50and starting handstand walks.
- 3:53I mean,
- 3:53and you started to handstand pushups,
- 3:55you were probably 60.
- 3:55Yeah.
- 3:57Yeah.
- 3:59And then, uh, during, uh,
- 4:02I think it was a qualifier.
- 4:03You were like doing a hang
- 4:05clean and you did like 185 pounds.
- 4:07Oh yeah, that's right.
- 4:09Hand clean.
- 4:10And she's like,
- 4:11I just hang clean my husband.
- 4:12Yeah.
- 4:19um so how did you two meet
- 4:21like how did this all come
- 4:22together well we met at the
- 4:25gym that we're still at
- 4:26sorry 10 years ago yes when
- 4:30you first came yeah because
- 4:32I've been at the same gym
- 4:34uh resolution crossfit for
- 4:3614 years over 14 years
- 4:40I've always been there, started in 2010.
- 4:42They affiliated in like December of 2009.
- 4:47And then you came when?
- 4:492012.
- 4:49So, yeah, so two years later.
- 4:53She was very gymnastic-y.
- 4:55And so I was always like a
- 4:57little intimidated by her.
- 4:59But I wasn't really into
- 5:02CrossFit at that time.
- 5:04But around 2019...
- 5:08We had another person that
- 5:10wanted to do an online
- 5:11qualifier for Legends.
- 5:14I think.
- 5:14Yeah.
- 5:14Or was it Wadapalooza?
- 5:16No, that was Wadapalooza was 2020.
- 5:18We did.
- 5:20Right.
- 5:21Yeah.
- 5:21So it was Legends.
- 5:22Yeah.
- 5:22It was Legends for 2019.
- 5:24And we were like, all right,
- 5:26we'll help this person, you know,
- 5:28do the online qualifier.
- 5:30We'll do it with her.
- 5:32And yeah.
- 5:33You know how qualifiers are,
- 5:35online qualifiers.
- 5:35You have to video everything.
- 5:37It's a big production.
- 5:38It's a big production.
- 5:40And we kind of just clicked,
- 5:45and we both made it to the
- 5:47Legends in 2019,
- 5:48where it was down in Carlsbad.
- 5:53So, and then you won your division, right?
- 5:57And I won my division and no,
- 6:00no looking back.
- 6:01Yeah.
- 6:02That was a fun one.
- 6:03That was very small compared
- 6:04to how they are now.
- 6:05Yeah.
- 6:07So was 2019 like the start
- 6:09of your competitive career?
- 6:10Definitely for me.
- 6:13Yeah.
- 6:13Me too.
- 6:14Yeah.
- 6:15I mean, we always did the open.
- 6:16I've done the open for years.
- 6:20Oh, God, 12 years.
- 6:22Yeah.
- 6:22And then we would do the
- 6:23online qualifier for the games.
- 6:25But back then we both
- 6:27weren't quite good enough to make it.
- 6:29Yeah.
- 6:30I mean,
- 6:31the year that I could have been top
- 6:3320 was the year they cut it to 10.
- 6:37And it was, you know,
- 6:38so I never I was never
- 6:40quite good enough to go to the games.
- 6:41So we would just do the open
- 6:43and then we do the master's
- 6:45online qualifier.
- 6:49So what switch flipped that
- 6:53you did become good enough?
- 6:55Or was it just all that work
- 6:57finally paid off?
- 7:02Well,
- 7:02I think when I bumped up into the
- 7:0450-year-old division...
- 7:07The 49-year-old division was
- 7:08very competitive for me.
- 7:10And then so when I bumped up into the 50,
- 7:12I feel like a lot of things
- 7:14came together and I got
- 7:15better at some things and
- 7:17it was enough to bump me up.
- 7:19So right,
- 7:20it was 2020 was the first year
- 7:22when they bumped it down to 10 people.
- 7:25And that's the first year I
- 7:26made it to the games.
- 7:28But that was also COVID year
- 7:29and they cut us.
- 7:30So it was my first year qualifying,
- 7:34but I couldn't go.
- 7:36So this is your third year
- 7:37going to the games,
- 7:38but it should be your fourth.
- 7:40Correct.
- 7:40Yeah.
- 7:40I've qualified four times and gone.
- 7:43This will be my third time.
- 7:44Yeah.
- 7:45Wow.
- 7:47And are you the,
- 7:48are you the oldest in the 50 to 54?
- 7:49Yeah, actually I turned 55 next week.
- 7:52So I will be 55 competing
- 7:54with the 50 to 54 year olds,
- 7:56just based on where the
- 7:58time that cutoff is for my,
- 8:00for the birthdays.
- 8:01So I will definitely be the
- 8:02oldest one in my age group.
- 8:04Okay.
- 8:05Yeah, my co-host Amy on our Tuesday show,
- 8:08her birthday is actually
- 8:09like the day after the cutoff.
- 8:13Like the day after.
- 8:15Yeah.
- 8:17Which means she is the
- 8:19oldest young person in whatever, you know,
- 8:22when she gets up there.
- 8:24Yeah.
- 8:26Yeah, and I'm the next to the youngest.
- 8:28I think Patti McGill is six
- 8:32months younger than I am
- 8:33because my birthday is October.
- 8:36Okay.
- 8:38So, so for Cindy, this is the,
- 8:41this isn't okay.
- 8:43Expectations because you are
- 8:45the oldest in your division.
- 8:47Do you pull those back a
- 8:50little bit this year?
- 8:53Yes.
- 8:54My expectations aren't,
- 8:57I'm going to work really hard.
- 8:58I'll do my best.
- 9:00But I say, if I make top 10,
- 9:02I'd be really happy.
- 9:05Cause I don't think I would
- 9:06make top 10 because there's
- 9:07at least 10 girls that are really,
- 9:09really good.
- 9:11But on the flip side,
- 9:12next year is when you push.
- 9:15Yes.
- 9:16Next year I'll be the youngest.
- 9:17Oh yes.
- 9:21And by legends in December,
- 9:23I will be bumped up to the
- 9:2555 category just because of
- 9:28how their timeframe works.
- 9:32So that would be my first
- 9:33one in that next age group.
- 9:34So Denise, you're newly into 65 plus.
- 9:37Right.
- 9:38Well, technically October.
- 9:41And this is, this is your year to push.
- 9:45Uh, yeah, supposed to calm down.
- 9:51Don't get too excited.
- 9:53Well, no, I'm like,
- 9:54at this point I'm like super tired.
- 9:56We, we just ran this morning.
- 10:00We ran a three mile hill run trail.
- 10:04with vests on.
- 10:06And so we're just sitting there going,
- 10:08oh my God, I am so tired right now.
- 10:09We did not stop.
- 10:10And there's some really steep hills.
- 10:12That was our goal.
- 10:13And both of us did not stop.
- 10:14And that's the first time we
- 10:15haven't stopped on those hills.
- 10:17So we're tired today.
- 10:19You're freaking just at the right time.
- 10:24I'll try it.
- 10:26And the funny is that it's
- 10:28hard for me to push her.
- 10:31Because there's 11 years
- 10:32difference between the two of us.
- 10:35I think the only thing I
- 10:38push her on really is deadlift.
- 10:41I can deadlift more than she does.
- 10:44But other than that,
- 10:45she can clean and... Oh, Shannon.
- 10:47Hi, Shannon.
- 10:49Hi, Shannon.
- 10:50Shannon Schlafer says,
- 10:51Cindy and Denise are sweet
- 10:53as they are fit.
- 10:54Great girls.
- 10:55Oh, it's a great...
- 10:58all thank you and lee
- 10:59frazier great job ladies so
- 11:03uh last off was it october
- 11:06shannon and shannon and um
- 11:11oh my god that's my my
- 11:13brain this is what happens
- 11:17when you become 65 years
- 11:18old right you lose people's
- 11:20uh names anyway
- 11:24I'm going to be really
- 11:25embarrassed that I forgot her name,
- 11:26but they came out to California.
- 11:29Debbie, Debbie Corwin.
- 11:31Oh, my God.
- 11:33They created a team.
- 11:35There you go.
- 11:36Thank you, Chan.
- 11:38They had a team,
- 11:40and we competed in the city
- 11:42of the industry.
- 11:45I forget what competition it was,
- 11:47but it was two teams.
- 11:48And it was so fun to compete against them.
- 11:50And it was right before legends.
- 11:52It was a great lead up to legends.
- 11:57And so we were on a team
- 11:58that's some of the pictures we posted and,
- 12:01um,
- 12:03Shannon and Debbie were on a team.
- 12:05Of course, they kicked our butts.
- 12:07But we're the only two teams
- 12:09in our age group.
- 12:10I think we're the oldest age group, right?
- 12:12It was like 50 and over.
- 12:14Yeah, that was fun.
- 12:15We had a good time.
- 12:16Our ages had to add up to 110.
- 12:20Yes.
- 12:21And ours was like 119 or
- 12:22something like that.
- 12:27So Lee says, I'm about to turn 61.
- 12:30I'm not very fit, but I'm working on it.
- 12:32I plan to have a 65 and a 70.
- 12:34Nice.
- 12:36Perfect.
- 12:39So you said that you can't
- 12:41push Cindy much in the gym
- 12:43other than on deadlift,
- 12:44but there's something that
- 12:45helps you become training partners.
- 12:47And is it more the
- 12:48friendship and the support
- 12:50and the encouragement or
- 12:52Yeah,
- 12:52it's probably making sure we get in
- 12:54there all the time.
- 12:54Like even during COVID,
- 12:57when we couldn't see each other,
- 12:58Denise would video zoom me
- 13:02and I would be in my garage.
- 13:04And during COVID,
- 13:05that's the only times that
- 13:06I actually would finish a
- 13:08workout was because I was
- 13:10zooming with Denise at the same time.
- 13:13And so we would push each
- 13:14other when we were doing that.
- 13:15But that's a good example of, I mean,
- 13:18I wouldn't do it if you
- 13:19hadn't made me zoom.
- 13:20Yeah.
- 13:22I think it's something that
- 13:28we have the same goals.
- 13:30When you share the same goals with someone,
- 13:34it's just a matter of
- 13:36having yourself in that environment.
- 13:40She has two sisters.
- 13:42I have two sisters.
- 13:44I kind of look at her as my little sister.
- 13:47Like when we travel,
- 13:48I feel like I take care of
- 13:50her like a little sister.
- 13:50She does take care of me.
- 13:52If I forget something,
- 13:53Denise always has it.
- 13:54She's like, here you go.
- 13:58But it's something because
- 13:59I'm the youngest in my family.
- 14:00And I love my sisters.
- 14:03We get along wonderfully.
- 14:04And her sisters are amazing.
- 14:08There's something I feel
- 14:09like I have a little sister now.
- 14:12And just having someone else
- 14:16share the same goal you do
- 14:19is very motivating.
- 14:22And when you're both working
- 14:24really hard and say in 2021
- 14:27was the first year we both
- 14:28made it to the games.
- 14:30And for both of us to make
- 14:31it like after all that,
- 14:33I just couldn't believe I was like,
- 14:35we are both going.
- 14:36I cannot believe it.
- 14:37And that was so fun.
- 14:39And that was our first time.
- 14:40And we got to go together to the games.
- 14:43It was like, it was crazy.
- 14:45Do you travel together when
- 14:47you go to competitions?
- 14:48Oh, yeah.
- 14:48Yeah.
- 14:49Yeah.
- 14:50Yeah.
- 14:50So really, you guys are family now.
- 14:54Yeah.
- 14:56Yeah, basically.
- 14:57We have very similar likes, dislikes.
- 15:02It's just that we can look
- 15:04at each other and go, yeah,
- 15:05and have that conversation
- 15:07just with our eyes,
- 15:08like have a whole conversation.
- 15:11We know what you're thinking.
- 15:13Yes.
- 15:14When we were sitting next to
- 15:16each other this morning on
- 15:17our little mats,
- 15:18because we were doing VFs,
- 15:19of course I did 15 VFs, she did 25.
- 15:23She did 25 VFs in the amount
- 15:25of time that I could do 15.
- 15:27So I was like, oh my God, I really suck.
- 15:30But I look over to her and she's like,
- 15:34I know she's like,
- 15:36I don't want to do this anymore.
- 15:39So funny.
- 15:40But what's really nice is, oh,
- 15:44You guys are so close to
- 15:45even have a combined shirt.
- 15:47Oh, we do, yes.
- 15:51Our gym is helping us raise
- 15:52money and created that shirt for us.
- 15:55Think of more ticket.
- 15:57Yeah,
- 15:58think of us as a political ticket there.
- 16:01I would say we're conservative,
- 16:05but we're very open-minded.
- 16:07Yeah.
- 16:09It looks awesome, just so you know.
- 16:12I love the way it looks.
- 16:13Thanks.
- 16:14What's nice is, too,
- 16:16she's a coach at the gym.
- 16:19So she's very knowledgeable.
- 16:23You have your L1.
- 16:25You're taking your L2.
- 16:26Yeah, a couple months.
- 16:27A couple months.
- 16:29I, unfortunately,
- 16:30am stuck in a 9-to-5 job
- 16:33right now until I retire.
- 16:36But then I'll take my L1.
- 16:38But what's nice about this year is our –
- 16:45owner of the gym, who is my coach,
- 16:47is coming to the games with us.
- 16:51He's going to be my coach there.
- 16:54He'll probably coach me too.
- 16:57How many people are you taking?
- 17:00My sister's going with me
- 17:02and she's actually going to
- 17:03be my official coach.
- 17:06She's staying with us also.
- 17:08Anybody in the crowd?
- 17:11I leave,
- 17:11I leave my cat to my husband at home.
- 17:16That's okay.
- 17:18Are they going to be watching the stream?
- 17:20Yeah.
- 17:20Yeah.
- 17:22Yeah.
- 17:22We'll make sure everyone
- 17:22knows where to watch the stream.
- 17:25How cool is it that you guys
- 17:27get Sean Woodland calling?
- 17:29Oh my gosh.
- 17:30That's amazing.
- 17:31There, when he was there, uh,
- 17:342022 in San Diego, uh,
- 17:39with Bill Grundler, I can't say his name,
- 17:43and Annie Sakamoto.
- 17:46Those three were just so amazing.
- 17:49They were so open to
- 17:51everybody coming up and talking to them.
- 17:53They were staying in the
- 17:54same hotel that we,
- 17:55most of everyone stayed at
- 17:57the hotel that were there
- 17:59in San Diego near the venue
- 18:02and just amazing people.
- 18:08just for him to yell out
- 18:09your name about something
- 18:11on the floor is going to be,
- 18:12it would become my ringtone.
- 18:16I made a post about it.
- 18:17It's on there.
- 18:18They,
- 18:19they were very complimentary on your
- 18:22clean.
- 18:23Yeah.
- 18:23Yes.
- 18:25There was a Viore moment
- 18:27because Viore was their sponsor.
- 18:30And all three of them were
- 18:32talking about the win.
- 18:33I think I did like a 150 clean.
- 18:39Something like that.
- 18:41It was just really nice to
- 18:42just hear them say my name.
- 18:45So to have Sean back there
- 18:46again at Legends, I mean, at the games,
- 18:52it's a dream come true for us.
- 18:54Yeah.
- 18:55For most of the masters.
- 18:56You get Sean, Chase, Tommy,
- 18:58and Lauren doing it.
- 19:00Yeah.
- 19:05Pretty, pretty awesome.
- 19:06I think isn't Chase.
- 19:07You said Chase too.
- 19:09Yeah.
- 19:10Yeah.
- 19:10He did say Chase.
- 19:11Okay.
- 19:13Yep.
- 19:13Yeah.
- 19:13It's fun.
- 19:15Yeah.
- 19:15That's, that's like the A-team.
- 19:18Yeah.
- 19:18We get the 18 this year.
- 19:20It's great.
- 19:20Yeah.
- 19:22So, um, and you're doing now,
- 19:24what are you doing?
- 19:25You doing about behind the scenes?
- 19:27We are.
- 19:29That's amazing too.
- 19:30Yeah.
- 19:31We're gonna, yeah,
- 19:33we're going to just hang out in the back.
- 19:35Uh, Ellie Hiller and myself, um,
- 19:37just capturing
- 19:38conversations you guys are having.
- 19:40Um,
- 19:42really like we want to just
- 19:43be flies on the wall just
- 19:44you guys interacting and
- 19:46talking and kind of
- 19:47capturing all that back
- 19:48there I'm sure we'll talk
- 19:49as well but um and then
- 19:51we're gonna have a couple
- 19:52videographers out front
- 19:54capturing stuff on the
- 19:55floor and put that together
- 19:58in a behind the scenes just
- 20:00like savon does with uh
- 20:02elite division okay nice
- 20:05that's that's the plan um I think there's
- 20:09Go ahead.
- 20:10I'm sorry.
- 20:10My vision for it is to
- 20:12highlight the community of
- 20:14the Masters Division.
- 20:15Whenever I'm there,
- 20:16you guys are the friendliest.
- 20:18You're so easy to talk to.
- 20:19You guys hang out together
- 20:20even though you're competitors.
- 20:22You support each other.
- 20:23So I told my videographers,
- 20:26the workout stuff's great.
- 20:27I want high fives.
- 20:28I want hugs.
- 20:29I want support.
- 20:30I want screaming for each other.
- 20:32That's the stuff I want from the floor.
- 20:35That's wonderful, Scott.
- 20:36Yeah.
- 20:37We appreciate it.
- 20:37That'll be very fun to watch.
- 20:40Yeah.
- 20:40Yeah.
- 20:41So that's what we're looking
- 20:42at doing for that.
- 20:44And I, you,
- 20:45of course you too will be a part of that.
- 20:47We will, we will grab you as you're,
- 20:51as you're working out and
- 20:52warming up and doing all those things.
- 20:56I, I'm usually pretty silly behind.
- 21:01I'm like, yeah,
- 21:05I'm always cracking a joke or something.
- 21:10Try to keep it light because
- 21:12otherwise you get too nervous.
- 21:15I think the only serious one
- 21:18I would be super serious on
- 21:21would be whatever the lift we do.
- 21:25Yeah.
- 21:26I wonder if they're going to
- 21:27release any of the workouts
- 21:28before you guys get there.
- 21:29Cause they have,
- 21:29we've heard nothing from the masters,
- 21:32but usually they give us like one or two,
- 21:34even in legends, right?
- 21:37The week before it won't be for, yeah,
- 21:39it'll be a little bit later.
- 21:41Yeah.
- 21:42Legends lecture.
- 21:42We didn't know anything
- 21:43until that athlete brief on
- 21:45Wednesday night.
- 21:49Well, I did send an email to Joe asking,
- 21:54there were a couple of
- 21:55things because when I saw
- 21:56that there was a post that
- 22:00said that athletes for the
- 22:02individuals had to find
- 22:03their own way to the venue.
- 22:06Like they didn't get like a bus.
- 22:10For the swim.
- 22:10They had to provide their
- 22:12own transportation to get to the swim.
- 22:14Did you hear that?
- 22:15Yep.
- 22:16Okay, so I'm like, well,
- 22:18I'm panicking because we
- 22:19don't have a car because
- 22:21we're staying at the venue.
- 22:23So I sent Joe an email.
- 22:25I said, hey, listen,
- 22:29we need to know whether we
- 22:30need to rent a car for any
- 22:34off-site venues,
- 22:37thinking like swimming or
- 22:39running or whatever.
- 22:40And then the other thing is I said,
- 22:43I need to know whether to
- 22:44pack my bathing suit because
- 22:47I need to know if I'm going
- 22:49to drown or not.
- 22:50And so I got a really, I don't know,
- 22:53a general email back saying
- 22:58for any offsite venues,
- 23:02we'll have a transportation
- 23:04system and you will have
- 23:07everything you need at check-in.
- 23:10Like, okay.
- 23:11Yeah.
- 23:11He did say, if there's a swim,
- 23:13you will get everything you need.
- 23:15So we still don't know if
- 23:16we're swimming or not.
- 23:17Yes.
- 23:17We'll know at check-in.
- 23:20Very well-written response
- 23:21to not like anything.
- 23:24So I'm like, all right, Joe.
- 23:25Yeah.
- 23:26Thanks.
- 23:27But we met Joe and Bob back in 2019,
- 23:30and we've always really
- 23:33been big supporters of what they do.
- 23:36And even back then,
- 23:37they said they wanted to
- 23:39treat the masters correctly,
- 23:42treat them right,
- 23:43give them a competition
- 23:44that they'll enjoy and that
- 23:49will test their abilities.
- 23:54i know like denise you
- 23:55balance a full-time job uh
- 23:58you work in i.t correct yes
- 24:01kind of yeah cindy do you
- 24:05do anything to for work
- 24:07well I'm a co I'm a coach
- 24:09at our gym so I coach and I
- 24:11have two girls so I'm for
- 24:13some reason very very busy yeah
- 24:17And they're teenagers, correct?
- 24:18They're teenagers, yes.
- 24:19Yeah,
- 24:21my oldest is actually going to school
- 24:23in Toronto.
- 24:25And I have to fly her there
- 24:27because it's her first time there.
- 24:28And I have to move her into
- 24:29the dorm the weekend before
- 24:31we go to the game.
- 24:32So I'll be flying with my
- 24:34daughter on Thursday to Toronto.
- 24:37staying in Toronto till the
- 24:38following Monday,
- 24:40flying home on Monday and Tuesday morning,
- 24:43getting on the plane to go to Birmingham.
- 24:48So I'm always juggling
- 24:50family and trying to train and just,
- 24:54I can't train as much as I want to,
- 24:56but that's okay because I
- 24:57don't mind doing stuff for my family.
- 25:00Did you used to work in marketing?
- 25:02I did.
- 25:02I worked at an ad agency.
- 25:03Well,
- 25:04several ad agencies until I had kids.
- 25:07And then working at an ad
- 25:08agency was just too many
- 25:10hours for me to take care
- 25:12of the kids also.
- 25:13And my husband's job was more demanding.
- 25:16So he didn't have any flexibility.
- 25:18So we needed someone in the
- 25:19family with flexibility.
- 25:21And I couldn't do that
- 25:22working in advertising anymore.
- 25:23And coaching fit the bill to
- 25:26make your own hours.
- 25:27Yes.
- 25:28Well, I stayed at home for a little while.
- 25:30And then when I started doing CrossFit,
- 25:33I loved it so much.
- 25:34And the owners asked me if I
- 25:36wanted to coach.
- 25:36And I said, yes, that sounds amazing.
- 25:40So,
- 25:40and I'm sorry that I'm asking Cindy a
- 25:42lot of questions.
- 25:42I've talked to Denise for a half an hour.
- 25:44So I know a lot about her
- 25:46stuff on another interview, but...
- 25:49You went all over the place.
- 25:51You were born in Canada.
- 25:52I was.
- 25:55I was born in Canada.
- 25:56Then I was raised in Texas.
- 25:59I went to school in Texas, Texas A&M.
- 26:02And then I met my husband in
- 26:03Texas and we moved to
- 26:05Florida where we lived for 10 years.
- 26:07And then from Florida,
- 26:08we moved to California
- 26:10where we've lived for 12 years.
- 26:12So we've been, I've been all over.
- 26:16So you have a big frequent flyer account?
- 26:19Yeah, I do.
- 26:20My daughter flies free with
- 26:22me every time I fly because
- 26:23I always try to use Southwest.
- 26:26They have companion pass.
- 26:28Whenever we go anywhere,
- 26:29I have to fly Southwest.
- 26:30I know.
- 26:30I force her to fly Southwest
- 26:32because I have all the miles.
- 26:33I don't want to pay for anything.
- 26:37I'm going to admit something
- 26:39here on the air.
- 26:40I have hated Southwest
- 26:42because I hate the cattle
- 26:43call to go on the plane,
- 26:47but I heard they're getting rid of it.
- 26:49They are January.
- 26:50There's there, you're assigned seats.
- 26:53Once you learn how to do the
- 26:54cattle call and you get really good at it,
- 26:56you always get the seat you want,
- 26:57but you just have to be on top of it.
- 26:59You have to know what to do.
- 27:00And then plus I'm a list too.
- 27:01So I automatically get first on the plane.
- 27:04So I get to pick my seat.
- 27:06Wow.
- 27:07I never, ever get,
- 27:08I think I'm on top of it,
- 27:11but there's people that
- 27:12like I go the minute I can
- 27:14and I still can't get in a, a group.
- 27:18Yeah.
- 27:20I've done it.
- 27:22I'm actually starting to use,
- 27:23just use Southwest anyway, because I,
- 27:26I flew up to Reno by myself
- 27:29and I ended up with Southwest.
- 27:31Okay.
- 27:31Yeah.
- 27:33Yeah.
- 27:33But now that they're assigning seats,
- 27:36I may, I may start flying them again.
- 27:39Someone was talking about,
- 27:40there was a lot of people
- 27:42that could use that were
- 27:44using wheelchairs and get
- 27:47on the plane in the beginning.
- 27:49And then they're
- 27:50miraculously fixed because
- 27:53they don't need a
- 27:54wheelchair when they get
- 27:55off the plane at their destination.
- 27:58It's like 25 people need
- 27:59wheelchairs to get on.
- 28:00So they get on early before everybody else,
- 28:03but two need to be picked up at the end.
- 28:05Yeah.
- 28:07I have so many gripes about
- 28:08the airline industry.
- 28:09I think they should charge
- 28:10for carry-on and not for
- 28:12checked because then there
- 28:14would be plenty of room for
- 28:16you to put your bag on the plane.
- 28:18Yeah.
- 28:19That's a good point.
- 28:21Yeah.
- 28:22Everybody charges for checked.
- 28:24So then everybody's trying
- 28:26to fit their crap on the
- 28:28check-in or on the carry-on
- 28:31and it doesn't ever fit.
- 28:32And then the people in the
- 28:32back can never get any carry-on space.
- 28:37Well, that's spirit.
- 28:38Like my husband flew spirit
- 28:40to Vegas and it was like, Oh,
- 28:42here's a cheap flight.
- 28:43And then when he's like, Oh,
- 28:44I'm going to bring my golf clubs.
- 28:46Oh sir.
- 28:46That's $40.
- 28:48And then your bags, $40.
- 28:49And he's like,
- 28:51but if you fly Southwest two bags free.
- 28:53Yeah.
- 28:55They let you check in for free every time.
- 28:57Yeah.
- 28:58I'm a Delta guy.
- 29:01I'm a Delta guy and,
- 29:02and I don't mind paying for a bag or two,
- 29:04but, um,
- 29:05and I just want to know what my
- 29:06seat is well ahead of time.
- 29:08Cause I'm a Clydesdale and I need my,
- 29:10I need some room.
- 29:12I need some elbow room.
- 29:14Yeah.
- 29:15Um, and yeah, even with that,
- 29:17I flew from LA to Columbus
- 29:20overnight one time in the middle seat.
- 29:22I wanted to die.
- 29:23Oh no, that's torture.
- 29:25Yeah.
- 29:26My back would be out.
- 29:28Oh, so bad.
- 29:29Well,
- 29:31So how's training been going
- 29:32up to the games?
- 29:33You guys ready?
- 29:35I think so.
- 29:36We're getting there.
- 29:37So I think I like right now we're,
- 29:39we're doing pretty good.
- 29:40Um, I went to Canada for a couple of weeks,
- 29:44a few weeks ago,
- 29:45and that put a little damper on it,
- 29:47but I'm back in and now
- 29:49we're running more, um,
- 29:51doing those trails.
- 29:52Um, so I feel much better.
- 29:53Yeah.
- 29:55Are you, do you have a,
- 29:56you keep talking about running trails.
- 29:58Do you think you're going
- 29:59offsite on a trail run?
- 30:02Possibly.
- 30:03I think it helps our fitness in general.
- 30:07Yeah.
- 30:09I feel like if you work that
- 30:10cardio and you do running
- 30:11and sprints and stuff,
- 30:12that's going to kind of
- 30:14translate to any other
- 30:15workout as far as your stamina.
- 30:20Yeah.
- 30:21I know when Morning Chalk Up
- 30:23released that the games
- 30:24were going to Birmingham,
- 30:25one of the attractions was
- 30:26that there were trails
- 30:28right beside the venue.
- 30:30So that's why I was leaning
- 30:32to see if you'd heard.
- 30:33I hope those are in the
- 30:34morning or evening.
- 30:35Yeah.
- 30:38It's going, it's, it's that wet, humid,
- 30:41hot.
- 30:42That's just awful.
- 30:44Well,
- 30:44it was hot here this morning when we were,
- 30:47we were,
- 30:48it took us a half hour to
- 30:49actually cool down.
- 30:52Yeah.
- 30:53It's been hot here, but we, yeah.
- 30:54And we get a little bit of
- 30:55humidity when I lived in Florida.
- 30:57It was like that hot is different.
- 31:00yeah florida is like
- 31:01suffocating I lived in
- 31:04tallahassee the armpit of
- 31:05florida and uh and it was
- 31:08like an armpit it was hot
- 31:09and sweaty and sticky and
- 31:12yeah just uh yeah who wants
- 31:15to live in tallahassee I
- 31:18mean is it is the living
- 31:22cost of living low
- 31:24It was pretty low,
- 31:24but the reason everything's
- 31:26low because the wages are
- 31:28low because it's all
- 31:31college students and retirees.
- 31:33So they're willing to work
- 31:34for less money than a,
- 31:36than a normal person.
- 31:37But I worked for the state
- 31:38of Florida and that's their capital.
- 31:40Okay.
- 31:41Yeah.
- 31:42So I got a job with them and
- 31:44that's why I live there.
- 31:47And other than the heat,
- 31:48I actually liked the town.
- 31:52Yeah, it's more like a college town,
- 31:53right?
- 31:54So lots of things to do.
- 31:55Florida State and Florida
- 31:57A&M are both there.
- 31:59And it's only like 110,000 population.
- 32:02It's easy to get around.
- 32:03So you didn't have traffic issues.
- 32:08But Kathy Wirth cannot wait
- 32:10to show you what he's done in person.
- 32:12That's my sister.
- 32:12That's my sister.
- 32:13She's meeting us there on Friday.
- 32:16She's my coach.
- 32:17Where's she coming from?
- 32:19From Dallas.
- 32:20She was hoping that we were
- 32:22going to be in Fort Worth also,
- 32:24which would have been great.
- 32:27Does she cross?
- 32:29Yes, she CrossFits also not as much.
- 32:31And when she comes in town to visit,
- 32:35she'll always come to CrossFit with me.
- 32:37And I have another sister
- 32:38who actually introduced me to CrossFit.
- 32:40She's in Seattle.
- 32:42Her name's Susie.
- 32:43I didn't know Susie introduced you.
- 32:45Yes,
- 32:45because I had never heard of CrossFit.
- 32:47And Susie was doing CrossFit
- 32:49at one of her friend's.
- 32:52uh garage and she says oh we
- 32:54love it so when I went to
- 32:57visit in seattle it was
- 32:58probably I mean like 15 20
- 33:02years ago right when they
- 33:04started probably we went to
- 33:06the garage with um I went
- 33:08to the garage and we did a
- 33:10crossfit workout
- 33:12And I really wasn't very good at the time,
- 33:14but I really did like it.
- 33:16I remember we had to put,
- 33:18I could not do it at all.
- 33:19We had to put a hundred
- 33:20pound barbell on our back
- 33:21rack and just walk with it.
- 33:23And I was like, I can't do this.
- 33:25I can't put a hundred pounds.
- 33:26I couldn't put a hundred
- 33:27pound barbell on my back.
- 33:28My sister had to take it for me.
- 33:31Wow.
- 33:31But yeah,
- 33:31that was the first time I had
- 33:32done a CrossFit workout was with Susie.
- 33:35A hundred pounds is a lot.
- 33:37I mean, I've done,
- 33:38I've done like the Easter
- 33:40wad where you just put a barbell,
- 33:41empty barbell on your back
- 33:43and do like four hundreds.
- 33:45And that, that gets to be too much for me.
- 33:47And I'm a big guy and I can
- 33:48squat a lot of weight, but that is not.
- 33:50Yeah.
- 33:52I mean, it really hurt me.
- 33:53I couldn't really do it.
- 33:54Susie had to take it for me.
- 33:56Yeah.
- 33:57Wow.
- 33:58Now is your introduction.
- 34:01That was my introduction.
- 34:02Yeah.
- 34:02Yeah.
- 34:03What was it like when you
- 34:04first came to resolution CrossFit though?
- 34:07I mean, so when I first went to Resolution,
- 34:10so I had a gymnastics
- 34:11background and I would go
- 34:13to the other gyms, right?
- 34:15And I would go do their
- 34:16kickboxing classes and other classes,
- 34:19but they ended up changing
- 34:21those all to like Zumba.
- 34:23I'd walk in, they're like, no,
- 34:23it's not boxing anymore, it's Zumba.
- 34:25And I was like, I can't, this is just,
- 34:27I can't do Zumba.
- 34:28So-
- 34:29There was a CrossFit, our CrossFit,
- 34:31that I would walk by every
- 34:32time because the fitness
- 34:34place and LA Fitness, I mean,
- 34:38and Resolution CrossFit
- 34:39were within walking distance of my house.
- 34:42So I'd walk by the CrossFit.
- 34:44And so I said, you know what?
- 34:45I'm just going to go try
- 34:46this CrossFit instead of doing the Zumba.
- 34:50So I went there.
- 34:51I never picked up a barbell.
- 34:53So I actually enjoyed the
- 34:55gymnastics part of it,
- 34:56like the pull-ups and stuff.
- 34:58Um, but I picked up the barbell and I,
- 35:00I couldn't get into a front rack.
- 35:02I couldn't do an overhead squat,
- 35:04but I eventually, um,
- 35:06just kept working on it.
- 35:09And you fell in love.
- 35:11Yes, I did.
- 35:12Yeah.
- 35:12Once I got better at the barbell,
- 35:13then everything was kind of,
- 35:15kind of went into place.
- 35:17Yeah.
- 35:18And I felt much better.
- 35:18I think honestly, she is a, um,
- 35:23attribute to someone had had
- 35:27a gymnastic background fit
- 35:30she was very fit because
- 35:32when she first came we were
- 35:33all looking at her going oh
- 35:34man she's fit she's gonna
- 35:36kill us all and so then but
- 35:40she didn't have the core
- 35:42strength of being able to
- 35:44do clean snatch all that stuff
- 35:47And once she started
- 35:48realizing that she could get stronger,
- 35:50it's amazing that how old
- 35:53are you when you started?
- 35:54Like 40?
- 35:55I was 40, like 41 when I started.
- 35:58I had never picked up a
- 35:58barbell till after I was 41.
- 36:00And now she's 55 and she's
- 36:03crushing lifting weights.
- 36:07It's amazing how much
- 36:08stronger and she's getting
- 36:10stronger every year.
- 36:11I started at 41 as well.
- 36:17Yeah.
- 36:18And, uh, I'm 55 now.
- 36:20Yeah.
- 36:21It was same timeframe.
- 36:23Yeah.
- 36:23I started in 2011, November of 2011.
- 36:26I, I probably different circumstances.
- 36:30You were really fit.
- 36:31I was 450 pounds.
- 36:31So, uh, yeah, totally different journey.
- 36:37I'm sure.
- 36:39But, uh, yeah,
- 36:40I had the same struggles probably.
- 36:41Yeah.
- 36:42Yeah, it saved my life.
- 36:44I mean, CrossFit truly saved my life.
- 36:46I was going to die if I didn't find it.
- 36:48Oh, no.
- 36:49That's amazing, though.
- 36:51You weren't always overweight?
- 36:54Or were you athletic when
- 36:55you were younger?
- 36:57So I was a college swimmer.
- 37:01So I was swimming five hours
- 37:03a day and I was super skinny,
- 37:07but I never learned how to
- 37:08like nutrition or how to eat.
- 37:10So when that went away back then,
- 37:12there was no CrossFit.
- 37:12There was no competition for
- 37:14me to jump into to like
- 37:17keep me motivated to do something.
- 37:19And I tried powerlifting.
- 37:21I tried some other stuff.
- 37:23It never really sunk in.
- 37:26And then time after time,
- 37:27you just get older and fall
- 37:28into the bad habits.
- 37:29And then at 41, I found CrossFit,
- 37:30lost 260 pounds.
- 37:39Wow.
- 37:40That's amazing.
- 37:41And then it's, but it's,
- 37:43it's never a straight line.
- 37:44Right.
- 37:45And then I had a back injury
- 37:46that like really sucked it to me.
- 37:49And now I'm coming back from
- 37:50that and I'm on like my
- 37:53second journey of that.
- 37:55So is your back all healed?
- 37:59Sure.
- 38:00It's, it's like, I just, I can't,
- 38:04I probably let my ego get in
- 38:06the way of a lot of things
- 38:08and like squatting.
- 38:09Oh,
- 38:10almost 500 pounds was not smart at my
- 38:13age.
- 38:13And, um, and I don't know if that,
- 38:17the doctor said it wasn't
- 38:18even that it was being
- 38:19overweight for years that
- 38:21actually hurt my back.
- 38:22Um,
- 38:22it was just literally I picked up a
- 38:25laundry basket.
- 38:26That's what was sent me over the edge.
- 38:28Oh no.
- 38:30And, uh, I've had 12,
- 38:3212 procedures on my back.
- 38:35and but I haven't had I
- 38:37haven't had to have
- 38:38anything in four or five
- 38:40years now it's just scary
- 38:43and it's trying to figure
- 38:44out what the new me is
- 38:45right yeah just work your
- 38:47way back up very slowly
- 38:50yeah and so like I think
- 38:53now I'm going to do a
- 38:54combination of swimming and crossfit
- 38:57I'm going to get to the pool
- 38:59and start swimming a couple
- 39:00days a week just because
- 39:02it's no impact and it's easy on my back.
- 39:06Just to get some reps in
- 39:07that way and then add
- 39:11CrossFit in to that.
- 39:13Did you have a passion for
- 39:15swimming so that now that
- 39:16when you're getting back into the pool,
- 39:20it feels like home?
- 39:22I don't know.
- 39:23I haven't started back yet.
- 39:24Oh, okay.
- 39:26It's going to happen after the games.
- 39:29Right now,
- 39:29I'm just working out in my
- 39:30garage doing CrossFit every day.
- 39:33But my passion is more for CrossFit.
- 39:35I just don't know if my body
- 39:36can handle that.
- 39:39So trying to figure out
- 39:42something to get me down to
- 39:43a good weight where I can
- 39:45handle that every day,
- 39:47if that makes sense.
- 39:50It sounds,
- 39:51your path sounds a little bit
- 39:54similar to mine where I was
- 39:58high school and college.
- 39:59I played softball and volleyball.
- 40:00I played golf and things like that.
- 40:02But toward the end of college,
- 40:05I weighed 193 pounds, almost 200 pounds.
- 40:10And it was really hard for
- 40:12me to lose that weight.
- 40:14And when I finally lost the
- 40:15weight and I started
- 40:16getting into running and then golf,
- 40:20then running, then the CrossFit gym,
- 40:22then I had, and I got down to like 155,
- 40:27something like that.
- 40:28And then I ended up having breast cancer.
- 40:30And during breast cancer, I just said,
- 40:33you know what?
- 40:33I don't, I don't care.
- 40:34Even though I did CrossFit,
- 40:36I'm just going to eat whatever I want.
- 40:38And I ended up getting up back up to 186.
- 40:44And now this morning, I'm like 146.
- 40:48But it took a long time for
- 40:50me to get from the 186 to say,
- 40:53you know what, I'm ready.
- 40:55I'm ready to actually take
- 40:58responsibility for my
- 40:59nutrition and get back down.
- 41:02Denise is impressive.
- 41:04She's very,
- 41:05very good at being disciplined
- 41:08with her food.
- 41:09You know, she tracks it every day.
- 41:12Well, she just doesn't eat.
- 41:14Whenever we go anywhere, I'm like,
- 41:17can we eat something, please?
- 41:18Because I'm starving.
- 41:20I'm getting better.
- 41:21And then she'll get like a
- 41:23burger and eat half of it.
- 41:24And she goes, I'm fine.
- 41:25I'm full.
- 41:28And I lose weight every time
- 41:29I travel with her.
- 41:32Wow.
- 41:34Lee Frazier says, I started at 55.
- 41:37I'm so inconsistent,
- 41:38I think is what she's saying there.
- 41:40CrossFit saved my life as well.
- 41:42Yes.
- 41:45Yeah, this has been fun, guys.
- 41:48It's funny because my travel
- 41:49person to events has been Jamie.
- 41:51And Jamie's going to be
- 41:52competing at the games as well.
- 41:55And so we're going to be kind of separate.
- 41:58She's doing her thing.
- 41:59I'm doing my thing.
- 42:01But we eat so different at events.
- 42:04Like she has to tell me to
- 42:06eat or I forget to.
- 42:08And she needs to get her
- 42:10calories in because she's working out.
- 42:13And it's, it's kind of the same way,
- 42:16but yeah.
- 42:19So we're,
- 42:19we're all going to be there
- 42:21supporting you.
- 42:21We're going to have this documentary.
- 42:23Hopefully it turns out awesome.
- 42:26Cause I want something for
- 42:27you guys to have after this
- 42:29is all over to remember the
- 42:30weekend and kind of the fun
- 42:32that you had there,
- 42:33not just the competition piece.
- 42:36Yeah.
- 42:36The behind the scenes sounds amazing.
- 42:38It'll be fun to watch.
- 42:40We appreciate it.
- 42:41Yes.
- 42:42Yeah.
- 42:42Can't wait to see you guys down there,
- 42:44ladies,
- 42:44and hang out and see what you
- 42:48crush it on the floor.
- 42:49We're going to try.
- 42:51I'm going to try.
- 42:53I'm going to leave it out
- 42:54there as much as I can.
- 42:57And that's the best part of this, right?
- 43:01Right.
- 43:01Put it all out there, and it is what it is,
- 43:03but make sure you have fun.
- 43:06I only have to hurt for like
- 43:08eight minutes.
- 43:09That's it, right?
- 43:10Unless we're running like a
- 43:1120 minute workout.
- 43:13They're not going to have 20
- 43:14minute workouts.
- 43:15There's way too many people to cycle.
- 43:18That's true.
- 43:18Yeah.
- 43:20Well guys,
- 43:21it's been an honor having you on
- 43:23here as always.
- 43:24So much fun.
