- 0:00Speaker 1: And I remember being like, that is the most fed
- 0:02Speaker 1: up thing that I've ever heard in my life, where
- 0:05Speaker 1: it's like, we're looking for a Donald Faison type. I'll
- 0:08Speaker 1: go in on the audition and they're like, well, we're
- 0:11Speaker 1: looking for Donald Faison type, but a better version of.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Donald donaldson ish but not full right.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Don't go full phaseon.
- 0:19Speaker 2: You went full phase on, you Donaldson went too far
- 0:22Speaker 2: in the Phason direction.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Here's some stories that show we made about a bunch
- 0:29Speaker 3: of docs and nurses. Sah I said, here's a story next.
- 0:38Speaker 2: So YadA, YadA, Welcome back, everybody.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Rewatch Show with back.
- 0:54Speaker 2: One two and now, Donald, you pointed out something very wise,
- 0:57Speaker 2: and that is that you know, when you do a pilot,
- 1:00Speaker 2: you shoot the pilot and then you have no idea
- 1:03Speaker 2: if the show's gonna get picked up. And there's often
- 1:06Speaker 2: a lot of time between when you shot the pilot
- 1:08Speaker 2: and then let's say the network says, okay, we're gonna
- 1:11Speaker 2: make it a series, and then you go and you
- 1:14Speaker 2: you go to a thing called the upfronts, which is
- 1:16Speaker 2: when your show is selected. You go to a huge
- 1:18Speaker 2: party in New York City where they announce where the
- 1:21Speaker 2: network is going to announce all of the new shows,
- 1:25Speaker 2: and this is a very thrilling thing for a young actor.
- 1:28Speaker 1: Absolutely, And also when Scrubs got picked up, it was
- 1:33Speaker 1: considered one of the better pilots of that time. And
- 1:37Speaker 1: so when we went to upfronts, I remember all of
- 1:39Speaker 1: the heat that we had behind us at upfronts, Like
- 1:42Speaker 1: even the party for all of the upfront shows was
- 1:46Speaker 1: kind of themed towards us, you know what I mean.
- 1:50Speaker 1: And you know, you get there, you and you and
- 1:53Speaker 1: you meet a bunch of executives for the first time,
- 1:56Speaker 1: and you don't really know who they are, because nobody
- 1:59Speaker 1: really knows executs gives until you're on the network and
- 2:02Speaker 1: somebody tells you, Okay, that's my boss and that's his boss, and.
- 2:07Speaker 2: Well, that reminds me of a wonderful story about you,
- 2:10Speaker 2: because we were we were so first we go to
- 2:12Speaker 2: the party and it's this amazing party and it's you know,
- 2:14Speaker 2: we were just wide on. We couldn't believe we were here.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I mean, I was waiting tables a few months ago
- 2:19Speaker 2: and and uh, here we are in New York at
- 2:22Speaker 2: this giant party and you have to you take pictures
- 2:25Speaker 2: with a lot of people and you know, you're getting
- 2:26Speaker 2: treated like a celebrity and you're not. No one even
- 2:29Speaker 2: knows who you are really yet, at least especially in
- 2:31Speaker 2: my case. And and then then we go to this
- 2:34Speaker 2: party and there were celebrities at the party. I remember
- 2:37Speaker 2: Kevin Nelan, who I was a huge fan of from
- 2:40Speaker 2: SNL as an example. He was I think literally might
- 2:43Speaker 2: have been one of the first celebrities I ever met,
- 2:45Speaker 2: was Kevin Neelan at this party. And I remember thinking, like,
- 2:48Speaker 2: oh my god, we're hanging out with with celebrities, like
- 2:50Speaker 2: we've made it.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Yeah, you know. Sean Hayes was another person who was
- 2:55Speaker 1: a big champion, like he loved the show, and it
- 2:58Speaker 1: was really awesome to have the dude from Will and Grace,
- 3:01Speaker 1: who at this point was really famous on television.
- 3:05Speaker 2: That show is huge. And do you remember any other
- 3:07Speaker 2: stars that were at that party. I remember. I just
- 3:08Speaker 2: remember because I was such an SNL fan as a kid,
- 3:11Speaker 2: that I was so geeked out that that Kevin Neilan
- 3:13Speaker 2: was there. I think there may have been some other
- 3:14Speaker 2: older SNL faces, but.
- 3:17Speaker 1: It was it was all the a. It was like
- 3:19Speaker 1: a NBC rich at like any anyone who was on
- 3:23Speaker 1: NBC at that time was at at the party.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Now we proceeded, understandably to get quite intoxicated at this party.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I remember Bill Lauren saying, like, all right, guys, just
- 3:34Speaker 2: so you know, like don't like, you know, there's been
- 3:36Speaker 2: a lot of executives at this party, Like I understand
- 3:38Speaker 2: in New York your livee has just changed. But like,
- 3:40Speaker 2: don't get ship faced too.
- 3:43Speaker 1: All of us, all of us, all of us shitty.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Sarah Schalk's famous line, you guys ever heard of a Cosmopolitan?
- 3:52Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, Sarah. Sarah stumbled up to us sideways
- 3:56Speaker 2: and she's like, have you guys ever heard of a Cosmopolitan?
- 4:00Speaker 2: They're great? And then I remember Cutie for some reason
- 4:04Speaker 2: at this bar, wasn't there like a trapeze, like a trapeze,
- 4:08Speaker 2: but what do you call that thing where you swing
- 4:10Speaker 2: on a trapeze?
- 4:12Speaker 1: You swing on a traff.
- 4:13Speaker 2: Feels way too dangerous, stupid, a real trapeze, But was there?
- 4:15Speaker 1: So it was something like that. It was a bar
- 4:17Speaker 1: in the middle, It was like a bar. I think
- 4:19Speaker 1: he was in the middle of the bar.
- 4:21Speaker 2: It was in the meat paggedstry I think it was
- 4:22Speaker 2: called park or something anyway, and she was.
- 4:25Speaker 1: On I remember her being on the bar and flipping
- 4:27Speaker 1: over and just showing everybody, you know, what she had
- 4:31Speaker 1: on underneath that dress she wore that day because she
- 4:36Speaker 1: was And I remember her husband at the time being like,
- 4:38Speaker 1: that's it, we're going home.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Time to go home, let's go. My favorite part of
- 4:41Speaker 2: the night is Donald was giving everyone noggies, and well,
- 4:46Speaker 2: all right, let's let's let me tell the story and
- 4:48Speaker 2: then you can clarify. Let me tell this.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Let's start from the beginning, though, Let's.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Start from the very beginning.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Okay, So Scott Sassa was the dude that I thought
- 4:57Speaker 1: was in charge of all of NBC at the time.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I think he was higher up than Jeff Zucker, who
- 5:03Speaker 2: we're going to talk about. Jeff Zucker was the I believe,
- 5:07Speaker 2: the president of NBC who's now actually now the president
- 5:10Speaker 2: of CNN, But at the time, he was a president
- 5:13Speaker 2: of NBC.
- 5:14Speaker 1: He had just come from whatever, the Today Show at
- 5:17Speaker 1: the time, and then he'd gone on to be the
- 5:21Speaker 1: head of NBC. And I didn't know this.
- 5:23Speaker 2: So Donald didn't know who he was. You're gonna ruin
- 5:25Speaker 2: my story. Donald didn't know who he was.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I thought he was Scott Sassin's assistant.
- 5:29Speaker 2: And Donald was going around giving everyone niggies, and I
- 5:32Speaker 2: look over and Donald has Jeff Zucker, the president of
- 5:35Speaker 2: the network, in a full headlock, and he's giving him
- 5:39Speaker 2: a drunken nuggie on his bald head. And I hear
- 5:43Speaker 2: Jeff Zucker, go, please Donald.
- 5:46Speaker 1: No, that's.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Okay for our entire friendship. Whenever Donald like tells me
- 5:55Speaker 2: a cringey story that makes me want to run away,
- 5:58Speaker 2: I just tell him about please Donald, Jeff Zucker.
- 6:01Speaker 1: You know, at this point, I'm giving everybody love because
- 6:03Speaker 1: I'm so excited that we're on the network. It's going down,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and I look over and I see Jeff Zucker in
- 6:10Speaker 1: my mind, Scott Sass's assistant standing over by the bar,
- 6:15Speaker 1: you know, by himself, or he might even have been
- 6:18Speaker 1: with somebody. And I'm like, hey, you come over here
- 6:21Speaker 1: iggies to give out, and he's like he's like no, no, no, no, no, no,
- 6:24Speaker 1: no no no. And I point at him again and
- 6:26Speaker 1: I'm like, and I get a little bit more you know,
- 6:28Speaker 1: agro about it, and I'm like, no, you get over
- 6:31Speaker 1: here right now, and he's like no, no, no, no,
- 6:34Speaker 1: no no, And so I march over to him, drunk
- 6:37Speaker 1: as can be.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I've seen you March when Donald marches his arms wing.
- 6:43Speaker 1: And I walk up to him and I grab him
- 6:44Speaker 1: and I put him in the headlock, and I'm like,
- 6:46Speaker 1: don't you ever tell me no? And I'm grabbing him
- 6:49Speaker 1: and I'm giving Jeff Zucker and nuggie. And I remember
- 6:53Speaker 1: Bill Lawrence like a few days later being like, dude, Donald,
- 6:58Speaker 1: I just have to ask you if this actually happened,
- 7:01Speaker 1: But did you give Jeff Zucker a nuggie? I was like,
- 7:04Speaker 1: I gave so many people nuggies.
- 7:06Speaker 2: I gave so many nigogies. I can't recall who was
- 7:08Speaker 2: the RECEI.
- 7:10Speaker 1: And he was like, well, apparently you gave the head
- 7:13Speaker 1: of NBC a noogie and he's not really happy about it.
- 7:19Speaker 2: He wasn't genuinely pissed off, was he.
- 7:22Speaker 1: No, I don't think he was genuinely pissed off. But
- 7:23Speaker 1: he stayed away from me. Yeah, I remember a really
- 7:25Speaker 1: long time.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I remember he did come to visit the set at
- 7:28Speaker 2: the hospital, and he kind of stayed away from you
- 7:30Speaker 2: because he was afraid.
- 7:32Speaker 1: He was very very afraid of me.
- 7:34Speaker 2: Yeah, that's very funny. Well what else do you?
- 7:37Speaker 1: So?
- 7:38Speaker 2: Then I remember that night ended where we were in.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I wasn't there. You were this was you and Nielan,
- 7:43Speaker 1: I wasn't there.
- 7:44Speaker 2: Oh really, almost everybody ended up back in Bill and
- 7:48Speaker 2: Christa's hotel room and we it's kind of it's sweet
- 7:52Speaker 2: slash embarrassing. We were so geeked out. We were like,
- 7:54Speaker 2: let's watch our pilot. So we were like, it was
- 7:57Speaker 2: like a whole bunch of people and Kevin Neelan, who
- 7:59Speaker 2: I was a fan of, and we just were watching
- 8:02Speaker 2: the show and I don't know, it's a sweet moment.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I remember being like just thinking like I can't believe
- 8:07Speaker 2: this is happening. But then the funny thing is you
- 8:10Speaker 2: have a long time before you start shooting. So we
- 8:12Speaker 2: made the show, it got picked up. My mom freaked
- 8:14Speaker 2: out that I was like that I quit my waiting
- 8:16Speaker 2: tables job. She was like, but what it's so long,
- 8:19Speaker 2: what are you gonna do? And I was like, I, Mom,
- 8:21Speaker 2: I I can live off this pilot money for a
- 8:24Speaker 2: long I was living so frugally with no money that
- 8:27Speaker 2: I was like, I can live off this pilot money
- 8:28Speaker 2: for a long time, So I'm gonna write. And that's
- 8:31Speaker 2: in that time is when I really finally sat down
- 8:33Speaker 2: and put Garden State together, and at my dining room table,
- 8:37Speaker 2: it kind of looked was like, this is a sign
- 8:39Speaker 2: I need to I have this time that the universe
- 8:42Speaker 2: gave me and I don't need to wait tables, and
- 8:44Speaker 2: I'm gonna sit down and like put this script together.
- 8:46Speaker 1: That's awesome. Yeah, I went away. I think I did
- 8:48Speaker 1: a movie that year. I know I did. I did
- 8:51Speaker 1: something in between. But I remember also calling Danny Rose,
- 8:55Speaker 1: who was Bill's assistant at the time, every day like,
- 8:57Speaker 1: so when do we start, man, Like, you know, he
- 9:00Speaker 1: was like, and we're going to start, probably around June
- 9:03Speaker 1: or July. I was like, dude, come on, like like
- 9:05Speaker 1: it was.
- 9:06Speaker 2: Up to Danny. I love it. You're like, come on, man,
- 9:07Speaker 2: we gotta start.
- 9:08Speaker 1: We gotta we gotta start soon.
- 9:09Speaker 2: Man.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I had a baby mama at the time, and we
- 9:13Speaker 1: had two kids and one on the way, and it
- 9:16Speaker 1: was like, I remember being like, I got to get
- 9:18Speaker 1: out of here, man, I got to do something.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, you wanted to be working, you wanted to
- 9:22Speaker 2: be like doing it?
- 9:23Speaker 1: Well yeah, And also we had this show that was
- 9:26Speaker 1: picked up, but we weren't going to work from you know,
- 9:29Speaker 1: from May until July or you know, is.
- 9:32Speaker 2: That what it was? How many I remember? I couldn't
- 9:34Speaker 2: figure out. Was it like four months where we waited
- 9:36Speaker 2: and waited.
- 9:36Speaker 1: We went back to work, probably in the beginning of July,
- 9:40Speaker 1: like most shows do something like that.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I just remember being at like four months or something.
- 9:45Speaker 2: But anyway, it was so exciting to finally start. And
- 9:48Speaker 2: so this episode that we're going to talk about today
- 9:50Speaker 2: one or two by the way, just this just a
- 9:52Speaker 2: little bit of oddness. They label TV shows in the
- 9:55Speaker 2: hundreds so you can keep track of what's season on.
- 9:57Speaker 2: So a pilot would be one oh one, right, and
- 10:01Speaker 2: then episode twould be one O two, and then when
- 10:03Speaker 2: you start season two it's two oh one two oh two.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Is that way? You know? Anyway, just a little bit
- 10:08Speaker 2: of trivia for you. So this is one O two
- 10:10Speaker 2: we're gonna be talking about, and it's called my mentor.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Okay, so the show starts off, and I remember singing
- 10:17Speaker 1: this song for such a long time.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Yeah, but uh it was Rola. It's called good Time
- 10:24Speaker 2: by Leroy. If you guys want to remind yourselves of
- 10:28Speaker 2: the song, and it was I really got it. You
- 10:31Speaker 2: can sing it ahead. I'm sure Lerola.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I got shot down in southern California. I remember being like,
- 10:44Speaker 1: that's a dope song, and that is this is you know.
- 10:47Speaker 1: For me, Scrubs was a brand new experience when it
- 10:50Speaker 1: came to music, because I didn't listen to music like this.
- 10:53Speaker 1: I listened to other types of music, and so this
- 10:55Speaker 1: was one of the first examples of me being of
- 10:58Speaker 1: me hearing this and being like wow, we and also
- 11:00Speaker 1: also seeing it for the first time too, and it
- 11:03Speaker 1: being like a music video. It was like, wow, we're
- 11:05Speaker 1: making music videos and also making a story about how
- 11:10Speaker 1: look in the beginning of the show, the hospital's in
- 11:12Speaker 1: sync because of this song that you're listening to in
- 11:15Speaker 1: your ear. We're on point, everybody is doing their job.
- 11:19Speaker 1: And I also noticed that we cut ahead a little
- 11:22Speaker 1: bit also, so you're no longer it's not the very
- 11:24Speaker 1: next day.
- 11:25Speaker 2: You're now it's a few days in and I've gotten.
- 11:27Speaker 2: But I just want to say, like I got. I
- 11:29Speaker 2: was watching this, and granted I haven't watched this in
- 11:30Speaker 2: twenty years. Most of these episodes I don't know about you,
- 11:33Speaker 2: but one of the things that's fun about doing this
- 11:34Speaker 2: podcast is with very few exceptions, maybe the musical episode
- 11:39Speaker 2: or or or ones I directed, I directed seven or
- 11:41Speaker 2: eight of them. I think I never I only saw
- 11:43Speaker 2: them once, so I haven't seen this in twenty years,
- 11:46Speaker 2: and it's so cool to look back. And Adam Bernstein
- 11:49Speaker 2: directed this episode. That was the same director who directed
- 11:51Speaker 2: our pilot, and I just remember thinking, like you just
- 11:54Speaker 2: said that, this was so exciting. We were like the
- 11:56Speaker 2: show was opening, like this was stuff I hadn't really
- 11:59Speaker 2: seen before in a show. It just showed the creativity
- 12:01Speaker 2: of Bill and Adam Eernstein and the fact that the
- 12:04Speaker 2: show is opening with this music video of how life
- 12:07Speaker 2: in the hospital when it's grooving is like a well
- 12:09Speaker 2: oiled machine. I just thought it was so clever.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Yeah, I took notice of that because I don't, you know,
- 12:14Speaker 1: watching this again, is it all seems a little brand
- 12:17Speaker 1: new to me, And I don't mean to We were
- 12:19Speaker 1: a part of the show and so it was just
- 12:21Speaker 1: an amazing moment for me. I'm gonna sound like, you know,
- 12:24Speaker 1: I'm cocky and arrogant, but you know, watching it, I
- 12:26Speaker 1: was like, Wow, this is a really really genius way
- 12:30Speaker 1: of showing how awesome or how InSync this hospital is.
- 12:34Speaker 1: For that, I was like, I love the show even
- 12:36Speaker 1: more now, you know, now that Now that it's twenty
- 12:39Speaker 1: years later, I'm like, Wow, we really were innovative, and
- 12:41Speaker 1: we really were different for primetime television. You know, regardless
- 12:46Speaker 1: of how many people watched the show at the time,
- 12:49Speaker 1: you know, it really still does hold up.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I have to say, and you can be that's
- 12:54Speaker 2: not you being arrogant because we weren't the genius people
- 12:56Speaker 2: behind writing it, although we.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Yeah, but we were a part of it. I know,
- 12:59Speaker 1: I know, But and you had a really big part
- 13:01Speaker 1: about it, you know, you did. You told the story.
- 13:03Speaker 2: I know, but I'm just saying like this, I think,
- 13:05Speaker 2: you know, as credit to Bill and all the writers,
- 13:07Speaker 2: this was just so original and different and exciting. By
- 13:12Speaker 2: the way, how funny is it that I have a Walkman.
- 13:14Speaker 2: It must be two thousand and one. I guess there
- 13:16Speaker 2: were still cassette walkmans. I would have thought it would
- 13:18Speaker 2: have been a disc but uh, I guess JD had
- 13:20Speaker 2: had a mix on a cassette.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Dude. You know, speaking of Walkman's, well, we we could
- 13:27Speaker 1: talk about it after season one, but I just remember
- 13:29Speaker 1: you walking the streets of New York City with your
- 13:31Speaker 1: yellow Walkman, listening to Michelle Branch.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Very to me when I closed my eyes it to you.
- 13:41Speaker 2: I see that was my jam. I am not a
- 13:43Speaker 2: hum about loving Michelle Branch.
- 13:45Speaker 1: I remember you walking out the house yellow. It was
- 13:47Speaker 1: a yellow walkman, the sony Walkman, the dope Sony Walkman's
- 13:50Speaker 1: that everybody if you had the yellow Sonny Walkman, you
- 13:53Speaker 1: had the dope.
- 13:54Speaker 3: You know.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Everything else was all right, but that was the one
- 13:56Speaker 1: right And I remember you being like, well, I'm out,
- 13:59Speaker 1: I'm going to a heard. That was when we were
- 14:01Speaker 1: both in New York, living together and you were doing
- 14:03Speaker 1: a journal.
- 14:04Speaker 2: That's a whole episode is Donald and I living together
- 14:06Speaker 2: in Manhattan. We rented a loft together. He was doing
- 14:10Speaker 2: a movie and I was doing Shakespeare in the Park
- 14:12Speaker 2: and I would go out and bop my head with
- 14:14Speaker 2: my yellow walkman cranking. You're everywhere to me and I
- 14:19Speaker 2: close my eyes.
- 14:20Speaker 1: It's you, Eyesy, I'm not alone, dude. I think it's
- 14:27Speaker 1: very much JD that you had a walkman with a
- 14:30Speaker 1: cassette tape in it.
- 14:31Speaker 2: Yeah. I noticed that the first exterior shot is still
- 14:34Speaker 2: not our hospital. They at two minutes in they cut too,
- 14:37Speaker 2: which was an establishing shot from the pilot of me
- 14:40Speaker 2: coming to work for the first day. I think that's
- 14:42Speaker 2: the very that's the same shot, exact same shot that
- 14:44Speaker 2: used in the pilot of me showing up to work
- 14:46Speaker 2: for the first day.
- 14:47Speaker 1: Do you remember going to that hospital and us shooting
- 14:49Speaker 1: a bunch of entrances like me and you walking in,
- 14:52Speaker 1: you walking in by yourself, you and Sarah walking in.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Remember all of that. Yeah?
- 14:56Speaker 2: Yeah, but yeah, but that was that was for the pilot, right.
- 15:00Speaker 1: No, that was for the show itself. We did a
- 15:02Speaker 1: bunch of We did a bunch of versions of us
- 15:04Speaker 1: walking into this hospital, and some of it never got used.
- 15:08Speaker 2: But at a certain point they just stopped using this
- 15:11Speaker 2: exterior because it was not our exterior at all. I
- 15:13Speaker 2: don't know where the where the hell that was.
- 15:15Speaker 1: I noticed that this episode has a lot to do
- 15:18Speaker 1: with relationships, you know what I mean, and how we
- 15:21Speaker 1: all started off kind of on rocky ground. You and
- 15:24Speaker 1: I had the same relationship, and you and the janitor
- 15:27Speaker 1: have the same relationship all the way through, but everyone else,
- 15:31Speaker 1: no matter how it's connected, has a different relationship. In
- 15:35Speaker 1: this episode. At this point, you don't mind being in
- 15:37Speaker 1: the friend zone with Elliott, and as a matter of fact,
- 15:40Speaker 1: he thinks it's kind of cool that, you know, he
- 15:42Speaker 1: has a colleague from work that wants to hang out
- 15:44Speaker 1: with him, and Turk Turk and Caller on together yet
- 15:48Speaker 1: you know what I mean, they're just starting their courtship,
- 15:50Speaker 1: you and doctor Cox, even though he's still giving you
- 15:53Speaker 1: advice and stuff like that. I also noticed that this
- 15:56Speaker 1: is the first time he calls you a woman's name.
- 15:58Speaker 2: Find the show too where he catches men's smoking.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Yeah, he calls you Susan. But this is you know,
- 16:04Speaker 1: you guys weren't in sync yet, so you don't really
- 16:06Speaker 1: know this guy and you're trying to get to know him,
- 16:09Speaker 1: or JD's trying to get to know him, but they
- 16:11Speaker 1: don't really know each other that well yet. And I'm
- 16:15Speaker 1: jumping ahead, But that stuff in his apartment is phenomenal.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Going back and looking at it, I was like I
- 16:22Speaker 1: had no idea one that it was this funny, and
- 16:25Speaker 1: two that it was this important, you know what I mean,
- 16:28Speaker 1: Like I had no clue watching it back then. It
- 16:30Speaker 1: kind of seems like a blur. And you know, to
- 16:33Speaker 1: be honest with you, most of this episode, I don't remember.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Yeah, there's things, there's things I don't remember. I don't
- 16:38Speaker 2: remember my It's funny, I don't remember my head exploding.
- 16:42Speaker 2: I mean, really no, I don't. I mean I remember,
- 16:44Speaker 2: I don't remember doing that gag. A lot of the
- 16:46Speaker 2: stunts and stuff I remember, I remember falling over when
- 16:49Speaker 2: he closes the door on my on my leg and stuff.
- 16:51Speaker 2: But the head exploding, I don't remember shooting that. But
- 16:53Speaker 2: I want to just pick up what you said. I agree.
- 16:56Speaker 2: A lot of it is about establishing these relationships that
- 16:59Speaker 2: were going to follow ultimately for nine seasons. And also
- 17:02Speaker 2: Judy really comes through in this episode. Judy Ray says, amazing,
- 17:06Speaker 2: she does some awesome work, and it's establishing a really
- 17:11Speaker 2: important theme that I think comes across throughout the whole
- 17:14Speaker 2: series is that we young doctors are learning the importance
- 17:18Speaker 2: of nurses because we come out of medical school and
- 17:21Speaker 2: we're super cocky and we think we're going to be badasses.
- 17:25Speaker 2: But we learn right off the bat, you know, not
- 17:28Speaker 2: to be cheesy and say the theme song. But we
- 17:30Speaker 2: can't do this all on our own. We need the
- 17:32Speaker 2: help of the nurses. And every doctor we ever talked
- 17:35Speaker 2: to in doing research would say, yeah, I mean the
- 17:37Speaker 2: nurses run the show. You know, if you're a Laman
- 17:39Speaker 2: and you don't know you have no idea how much
- 17:42Speaker 2: work and pressure and stress the nurses are all constantly under.
- 17:46Speaker 2: And I was thinking about that now, especially with the
- 17:48Speaker 2: Corona crisis going on and watching all the news, and
- 17:51Speaker 2: I was really, I don't know, extra moved by it
- 17:53Speaker 2: in this episode, seeing like that those nurses are just
- 17:55Speaker 2: working their asses off, and Sarah's character in particular needs
- 17:58Speaker 2: to learn that, like, no, no, we're a team and
- 18:01Speaker 2: you need to like check your arrogance at the door,
- 18:04Speaker 2: and this is really about like we're gonna do this
- 18:07Speaker 2: together and you need the nurses to be on your side.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Absolutely absolutely with that. I agree with you one hundred percent.
- 18:13Speaker 1: It's true. Nurses are the heart and soul of the hospital.
- 18:16Speaker 1: Just to piggyback on what you said about Sarah, though,
- 18:19Speaker 1: a perfect example of someone who's not sincere about their
- 18:22Speaker 1: apology is when they apologize to you and then it's
- 18:25Speaker 1: followed with but just to be clear, you know what
- 18:28Speaker 1: I mean. And she totally does that in this episode,
- 18:32Speaker 1: and everything that happens to her after this is because
- 18:35Speaker 1: of how she just consistently put her foot in her
- 18:39Speaker 1: mouth throughout this episode. Now, I wonder, if I don't remember,
- 18:43Speaker 1: if it carries on through this season, but through the
- 18:47Speaker 1: career of the show. Through the show, her character always
- 18:50Speaker 1: had the worst luck.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Yeah, well again, that comes from her life too. I mean,
- 18:54Speaker 2: Sarah is a klutzy gal. She'll be the first to
- 18:56Speaker 2: admit when she comes on our show. And Sarah come
- 19:00Speaker 2: in from the weekend every single time, without fail, every
- 19:03Speaker 2: single Monday morning, and you're like, you, guys, are not
- 19:06Speaker 2: gonna believe what happened to me this weekend? And she
- 19:08Speaker 2: would go on to tell the craziest story that you
- 19:11Speaker 2: would be like a once in a in a two
- 19:13Speaker 2: year period to a normal person, something like this would
- 19:17Speaker 2: happen to you, and it would happen to Sarah every weekend,
- 19:19Speaker 2: and we'd be we'd be like, Sarah, you're you're putting
- 19:22Speaker 2: us on it. Can't that can't have happened to you
- 19:23Speaker 2: this weekend, and you're not gonna believe it. And then
- 19:26Speaker 2: on top of that, and then my keys fell, and
- 19:29Speaker 2: then my wedding ring got lost, and.
- 19:32Speaker 1: I remember one story was like a car lost control
- 19:35Speaker 1: and started barreling down a hill and her fiance at the.
- 19:40Speaker 2: Time had to drop in the car.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Or grabbed a kid out of the way, or something
- 19:45Speaker 1: like that.
- 19:45Speaker 2: I remember, and when there was then her wedding ring
- 19:48Speaker 2: fell down a gutter, and every every weekend it was
- 19:52Speaker 2: like it was like here we go, and Sarah would
- 19:53Speaker 2: have a half hour story like you guys, and she
- 19:55Speaker 2: was always breathless. She was like, you're not gonna believe
- 19:58Speaker 2: what donald. At two fifty four, one of the most
- 20:02Speaker 2: important characters in Scrubs history is introduced a character very
- 20:07Speaker 2: near and dear to our hearts named Rowdy.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, I made that note. Also, Holy cow, Rowdy
- 20:14Speaker 1: that joke. When we were filming it, I was like,
- 20:17Speaker 1: this is the oddest thing I've ever done in my life.
- 20:20Speaker 1: This is a stuffed dog, right, and we're gonna pretend
- 20:23Speaker 1: like it's our pet.
- 20:24Speaker 2: I think Bill will have to ask him. Let's make
- 20:26Speaker 2: a note to ask him when he comes on. But
- 20:27Speaker 2: I think that the idea was that some doctor had
- 20:30Speaker 2: told him that they never had time to have a pet,
- 20:33Speaker 2: especially when they were just starting out, because their hours
- 20:36Speaker 2: were so insane, and so he thought it would be
- 20:40Speaker 2: funny if if we got a taxiderman pet.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I mean, that's the oddest thing I've ever heard of
- 20:45Speaker 1: in my life.
- 20:46Speaker 2: I know, just I mean, where did they find that thing?
- 20:49Speaker 1: Exactly who in that right mind was like, you know what,
- 20:53Speaker 1: I'm misbuster.
- 20:54Speaker 2: No, I think people do him. I do think it's
- 20:56Speaker 2: a thing. I mean, I really think. I'm sure out
- 20:58Speaker 2: there are fans with you're listening, you can write in
- 21:01Speaker 2: and tell us. But I do think there are people
- 21:03Speaker 2: that taxidermy their pet.
- 21:04Speaker 1: Okay, I don't understand, Joelle, have.
- 21:07Speaker 2: You ever heard of this? Joelle's nodding, she has heard
- 21:09Speaker 2: of this.
- 21:10Speaker 1: Barbara streisand Barbara streisand I believe his taxidermied and cloned
- 21:16Speaker 1: her dogs. She clones her dog because she's sorry so much.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I think she's on like volume five. We have the
- 21:23Speaker 1: technology to clone animals.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you can clone your dog. You didn't know that.
- 21:27Speaker 1: I did not know that.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Yeah, you can clone your dog. It all started with
- 21:30Speaker 2: Dolly the sheep. Remember they cloned the sheep Dolly.
- 21:33Speaker 1: I thought that was like only a couple of years ago.
- 21:35Speaker 2: And that was many years ago, and then since since now,
- 21:38Speaker 2: if you're Barbara streisand I'm sure it's very expensive, you
- 21:40Speaker 2: can clone your dog. So rowdy was taxidermy? Now? I
- 21:44Speaker 2: tried to get rowdy when the show was over, and
- 21:47Speaker 2: I listen, we did nine years I said to Bill,
- 21:51Speaker 2: the only thing I want from everything is Rowdy. I
- 21:54Speaker 2: think it would be a wonderful souvenir for me to have.
- 21:56Speaker 2: And he said sure. And then the people at Disney
- 21:59Speaker 2: who owned the show said, no, you can't have Rowdy.
- 22:03Speaker 2: He belongs to Disney. And I pictured, like you remember
- 22:07Speaker 2: at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark, how
- 22:09Speaker 2: they put the arc of the Covenant way in the back.
- 22:12Speaker 2: I pictured Rowdy going into like an endless infinite uh
- 22:16Speaker 2: of you knowrehouse warehouse in the back, and like the
- 22:20Speaker 2: forklift is going by like other taxidermy dogs, and he's
- 22:23Speaker 2: going like way, way way.
- 22:25Speaker 1: In the back, right the dog from Frasier's tax exactly exactly.
- 22:29Speaker 2: And I was just so bumped. So when I made
- 22:31Speaker 2: my film, wish I was here that you were in,
- 22:33Speaker 2: very very funnily as the Ashton Martin Dealer, I said
- 22:37Speaker 2: to Disney, Hey, for the scrubs fans, I thought it'd
- 22:40Speaker 2: be funny if I put Rowdy like in the back
- 22:42Speaker 2: of a scene, like an Easter egg for them to find.
- 22:44Speaker 2: And I said, cand I borrow the dog, just to put,
- 22:47Speaker 2: you know, just a little Easter egg for everybody. They said,
- 22:51Speaker 2: we will, but we're gonna send him with a bodyguard. Wow,
- 22:53Speaker 2: because we're worried that you're gonna try and steal him
- 22:56Speaker 2: once he's delivered. So they sent Row with a handler.
- 23:01Speaker 2: They sent the taxi dermy dog with a handler.
- 23:04Speaker 1: I feel like that's understandable though, because I feel like
- 23:06Speaker 1: if they didn't send the dog with the handler somewhere
- 23:08Speaker 1: along the way, the dog would have got lost.
- 23:10Speaker 2: I wasn't gonna steal the dog. I was gonna build
- 23:12Speaker 2: my best behavior. Listen, he didn't look good though he
- 23:15Speaker 2: looked he looked, he did not look as good as
- 23:16Speaker 2: he looked thin. I remember. I know it makes no sense,
- 23:27Speaker 2: but I remember when he showed up on set with
- 23:29Speaker 2: his bodyguard, thinking like, he doesn't look good. He's not
- 23:32Speaker 2: being taken care of.
- 23:33Speaker 1: He'd not be taken care of it all.
- 23:35Speaker 2: Like one of his paws was all janky, and like
- 23:37Speaker 2: I had to like blew it.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Do you remember the prop master who hid Rowdy.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I don't know if this is Scrubs urban legend or not,
- 23:52Speaker 2: but go ahead, you tell it.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Well. I just know that we had a prop master
- 23:55Speaker 1: who didn't work out.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Yes he was he was let go right and to.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Get back at production he decided that he was going
- 24:03Speaker 1: to hide Rowdy in the ceiling. Is that where you
- 24:07Speaker 1: hit it?
- 24:07Speaker 2: Well, as the Scrubs urban legend goes, he was let
- 24:10Speaker 2: go and he was angry about being let go. And
- 24:13Speaker 2: then you know, we were in the hospital that had
- 24:14Speaker 2: all those you know, lower tiled ceilings that you see
- 24:17Speaker 2: in hospitals, and apparently he he hid Rowdy up in
- 24:21Speaker 2: the ceiling tiles above the proper. Oh that's when, by
- 24:27Speaker 2: the way, that's when everyone started to be like, oh shit,
- 24:29Speaker 2: if we lose Rowdy, this is bad. We need a backup.
- 24:32Speaker 2: And that's when they got Stephen.
- 24:34Speaker 1: Right, but they had like three or four different rowdies though, so.
- 24:37Speaker 2: There were just two. There was Rowdy and Stephen. Do
- 24:39Speaker 2: you remember, because there was a whole episode where where Judy.
- 24:42Speaker 1: Which where uh uh?
- 24:46Speaker 2: And then I feel their balls and then I feel
- 24:48Speaker 2: their balls and I'm like, nope, that's Steven. So in
- 24:51Speaker 2: the world of Scrubs, JD had memorized the two different
- 24:54Speaker 2: dog taxidermy dog's ball sacks up, that's Steven. So let's
- 25:00Speaker 2: talk about our apartment set, because this is the first
- 25:02Speaker 2: time you're seeing our apartment. This was built into the hospital.
- 25:07Speaker 2: You know, Normally you'd have a set like this on
- 25:08Speaker 2: a sound stage. But in order for us to do
- 25:11Speaker 2: the whole show at this abandoned hospital, Cabint McMullin, our
- 25:15Speaker 2: genius production designer, found a way to build all of
- 25:18Speaker 2: this into I don't know what it was. It was
- 25:21Speaker 2: like the urgent care wing or something.
- 25:23Speaker 1: No, if this wasn't in the urgent care wing, this
- 25:24Speaker 1: was actually in the basement of the hospital. Urgent care
- 25:27Speaker 1: turned out to be the bar, the bar and all
- 25:30Speaker 1: of that stuff, right, but this was this was actually
- 25:33Speaker 1: right by the children's ward in the hospital. So if
- 25:36Speaker 1: you went, they.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Knocked out some walls and so this was. This was
- 25:39Speaker 2: in you know, this looks like prett damn good apartment,
- 25:41Speaker 2: but it was in the hospital.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Yeah. It was also the loading area also, so when
- 25:47Speaker 1: they would cut and at night when they wanted to
- 25:49Speaker 1: bring things into the hospital. On the other side of
- 25:52Speaker 1: the wall, there was this big garage door that you
- 25:54Speaker 1: could open up and load all the equipment.
- 25:57Speaker 2: I remember. It was always incredibly hot, right, there was no,
- 26:00Speaker 2: it wasn't it wasn't meant to be a sound stage
- 26:03Speaker 2: with lights and everything.
- 26:04Speaker 1: The whole hospital was on fire because you know, you
- 26:07Speaker 1: couldn't run air condition when we're running like we used
- 26:10Speaker 1: to have the tubes. Remember, we would have the tube.
- 26:12Speaker 2: God, they'd have a tube wrangler.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Even in our dressing rooms. They gave us like halfway
- 26:17Speaker 1: through season one, they gave us our own little air
- 26:20Speaker 1: conditioning units to keep us cool because the hospital got
- 26:23Speaker 1: so hot in the summer.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Right, but I remember, so there was an air conditioning
- 26:27Speaker 2: in the hospital, and so they had these exterior units
- 26:30Speaker 2: and they had these tubes. I'm sure you've seen them.
- 26:33Speaker 2: They were like, I don't know, two feet in diameter.
- 26:36Speaker 2: They'd be running everywhere to try and make it comfortable,
- 26:38Speaker 2: but they were. It was someone's full time job to
- 26:41Speaker 2: try and wrangle the tubes.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Yeah. So what I noticed about this episode I kept
- 26:46Speaker 1: waiting for one line that made it into the promo
- 26:50Speaker 1: for the first episode but wasn't in the first episode.
- 26:54Speaker 1: And that's when Elliott says to me, Hey, when did
- 26:58Speaker 1: you meet Morgan Freeman.
- 26:59Speaker 2: I laughed out loud when that line came up. I mean,
- 27:02Speaker 2: I knew it was coming, and you know, there's some
- 27:04Speaker 2: jokes in this that, even though you know them, I
- 27:06Speaker 2: just laughed out loud when I heard that. It's just
- 27:08Speaker 2: that was so frigging funny.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I laughed my ass off, and you know it's
- 27:12Speaker 1: really my mom. But that's not even the funny part.
- 27:16Speaker 1: The funny part is she goes she has lovely freckles.
- 27:20Speaker 2: I love hers. I love her freckles. Okay, So the
- 27:27Speaker 2: next thing I wrote down was Todd the introduction of
- 27:31Speaker 2: Rob Mashchio and Rob kind of is this guy, right?
- 27:34Speaker 2: I mean he not that he was like I mean,
- 27:36Speaker 2: not that he was a womanizer like this, but he
- 27:38Speaker 2: was kind of like a funny, funny jockey kind of guy, right.
- 27:42Speaker 1: Absolutely, he was very well. He was a pretty good athlete,
- 27:46Speaker 1: you know what I mean. He took really good care
- 27:47Speaker 1: of his body and stuff like that.
- 27:49Speaker 2: I remember he told me he ate a pine of
- 27:50Speaker 2: Ben and Jerry's every day, which I always found amazing
- 27:53Speaker 2: because he would have to work out like that much
- 27:56Speaker 2: extra to work off of pine of Ben Jerry's a day.
- 27:59Speaker 2: So he must have worked out a time to have
- 28:00Speaker 2: his Todd body.
- 28:02Speaker 1: And he was a lot older than us at the
- 28:04Speaker 1: time too.
- 28:04Speaker 2: I think he's seventy five in this episode. No, he
- 28:09Speaker 2: does look good. I I remember he wasn't like like
- 28:11Speaker 2: that old, but I remember he was older than us.
- 28:14Speaker 1: He was a lot old. He was like in his
- 28:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna say thirty something, We were twenty something, and
- 28:19Speaker 1: he was like thirty five, thirty six.
- 28:21Speaker 2: Rob's gonna come on the podcast.
- 28:23Speaker 1: And I really enjoyed the fact that, you know, you
- 28:26Speaker 1: do projects and sometimes they don't really put the effort
- 28:29Speaker 1: into develop you know, these romantic relationships with the characters.
- 28:34Speaker 1: And I really enjoyed the effort put into Carla and
- 28:39Speaker 1: Turk's courtship and how you know what I mean, and
- 28:42Speaker 1: how it became a storyline in the show. And it
- 28:45Speaker 1: wasn't just something that from the beginning they had chemistry
- 28:48Speaker 1: and now they're dating. You know, Turk had to work
- 28:51Speaker 1: for it, Carla had to work for it. And then
- 28:54Speaker 1: and the ultimate thing was at the end they you know,
- 28:56Speaker 1: they're they're married with kids and stuff like that. I
- 28:59Speaker 1: love that we see their growth from the pilot to
- 29:02Speaker 1: this episode and then as the show goes along.
- 29:06Speaker 2: You guys were such a good ying yang for each
- 29:08Speaker 2: other too. I mean, you're, you know, the sort of
- 29:11Speaker 2: silly jockey surgeon and she's just like so smart and
- 29:16Speaker 2: clever and and kind of running the entire hospital. And
- 29:20Speaker 2: I just thought the way that they wrote your flirtation
- 29:23Speaker 2: and your and your chemistry was really and you guys
- 29:25Speaker 2: performed it really, really well. Can I tell them the
- 29:27Speaker 2: story about what Casey first said when I tried to
- 29:29Speaker 2: set you up?
- 29:30Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 29:30Speaker 2: We were in the We were in a nightclub, Donald
- 29:32Speaker 2: and I and I see Casey Cobb, the beautiful Casey Cob,
- 29:36Speaker 2: across the club, and she was with Jessica Simpson.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Because she was she is her assistant.
- 29:42Speaker 2: She was her assistant and now they're like best friends.
- 29:45Speaker 2: And I knew them just as acquaintances. And Donald had
- 29:48Speaker 2: such a crush on Casey. He was just staring at her,
- 29:50Speaker 2: like just like go I'd like, couldn't, couldn't even think
- 29:54Speaker 2: about other stuff, wouldn't even wouldn't just like lost. So
- 29:57Speaker 2: finally I got the courage to go up to Casey
- 29:59Speaker 2: and I'm hey, so trying to be the best wing
- 30:02Speaker 2: man in the world.
- 30:03Speaker 1: And I'm like, hey, so, I appreciate you one hundred
- 30:05Speaker 1: percent for this.
- 30:06Speaker 2: So I was like, hey, my buddy really likes you.
- 30:09Speaker 2: He really thinks you're really beautiful. She goes who and
- 30:12Speaker 2: I point over like not over to Donald and she
- 30:15Speaker 2: goes Then you have like nine kids and I always
- 30:24Speaker 2: thought that was so funny. Cut to them getting married
- 30:26Speaker 2: in my backyard.
- 30:27Speaker 1: Yeah, at the time, I didn't have nine kids. I
- 30:29Speaker 1: only had four.
- 30:30Speaker 2: I had had four. But it was a funny sassy
- 30:32Speaker 2: line from her. Yeah, and your charms obviously worked because however,
- 30:36Speaker 2: many years later they were married in my backyard.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Yeah, thanks to you being a great wingman.
- 30:42Speaker 2: It all started with a wingman line.
- 30:43Speaker 1: I remember me being like, yeah, will you go over
- 30:45Speaker 1: there and talk to her for me? And you being like,
- 30:47Speaker 1: are you fucking kidding me? Go over yourself. I'm like,
- 30:50Speaker 1: oh no, no, no, no, no, no no, and.
- 30:51Speaker 2: You're like, oh no, I remember you think I got
- 30:54Speaker 2: the courage.
- 30:55Speaker 1: I got the No, you did get the courage. But
- 30:57Speaker 1: you went over there, and then you came back and
- 30:58Speaker 1: I'm like, well, what did she say? Did I tell
- 31:02Speaker 1: you or you told me right No? No, no, you
- 31:06Speaker 1: told me right away. You're like, dude, she was like,
- 31:08Speaker 1: doesn't he have like nine kids? And I remember being like,
- 31:11Speaker 1: oh no, because I was like, that's what the ladies
- 31:16Speaker 1: in California think, that's what Hollywood thinks about me. I'm
- 31:18Speaker 1: a dude with all the kids.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Well, it's funny that it's funny that like. She wasn't like,
- 31:22Speaker 2: oh no he's not cute, or oh no he's not funny,
- 31:25Speaker 2: or oh no, I don't think he's funny on TV
- 31:27Speaker 2: and movies. She was just like, doesn't he have like
- 31:29Speaker 2: nine keys? With herself accent? Anyway, this should be an
- 31:33Speaker 2: inspiration to you men and women out there who think
- 31:37Speaker 2: you can't possibly get that person you have a crush on,
- 31:40Speaker 2: and they might even open with a line equivalent to
- 31:42Speaker 2: doesn't he have like nine kids? But if you just
- 31:44Speaker 2: are persistent like Donald was, you could one day get
- 31:46Speaker 2: married in my backyard.
- 31:48Speaker 1: All right?
- 31:48Speaker 2: Should we move on?
- 31:49Speaker 4: Oh?
- 31:49Speaker 2: We talk about Rob running line because I always thought
- 31:51Speaker 2: that was funny. So Rob as a testament to Rob Mashio,
- 31:54Speaker 2: who played Todd. He would take it so seriously. And
- 31:57Speaker 2: I'm not making fun of Rob, because I get it.
- 31:59Speaker 2: He didn't have a lot to do in every episode,
- 32:01Speaker 2: and he would always make sure he was doing the
- 32:02Speaker 2: best he could. But sometimes we'd look over and he
- 32:05Speaker 2: would just be running his one line over and over
- 32:08Speaker 2: and over.
- 32:11Speaker 1: Air five yeah, air five.
- 32:13Speaker 2: Yeah. We just see him a five, Like I'd be
- 32:15Speaker 2: like dying five. Rob's over there running line air five yeah,
- 32:18Speaker 2: a five high five Air five, Air five, they really
- 32:24Speaker 2: did hurt. Those those friggin' rob high fives. For what
- 32:27Speaker 2: it's worth.
- 32:28Speaker 1: I was about to say it seemed like you got
- 32:29Speaker 1: used to it after a while.
- 32:31Speaker 2: No, they really hurt, and the whoppersh noise was added,
- 32:33Speaker 2: but man, they really hurt. Sarah digging the grave at
- 32:37Speaker 2: around eight minutes and forty six seconds. That's become like
- 32:39Speaker 2: a popular meme. I always see, like, you know, when
- 32:42Speaker 2: fans send us gifts and memes and I see him
- 32:44Speaker 2: on the internet, on the interwebs. That's what I always see,
- 32:46Speaker 2: is it's funny watching it when you go, oh, that's
- 32:49Speaker 2: that meme I've seen before. But that Sara digging is
- 32:51Speaker 2: one people use when like they're putting their foot in
- 32:53Speaker 2: their mouth, dig in the grave.
- 32:54Speaker 1: I forgot. I totally forgot about that, and so when
- 32:56Speaker 1: I saw it, it was really refreshing and really funny. Huh yeah,
- 33:00Speaker 1: it was very funny. And then they throw dirt on
- 33:02Speaker 1: her too, at her rose. That's a great joke.
- 33:05Speaker 2: The next thing I wrote down was, oh, the would
- 33:07Speaker 2: you like to play a game thing with the robot voice?
- 33:09Speaker 2: Do you remember what movie that's from?
- 33:11Speaker 1: Of course War Games?
- 33:13Speaker 2: Yes, one of my favorite movies.
- 33:15Speaker 1: And then the other one was from Buck Rogers B
- 33:17Speaker 1: to B to BD BD. Hey Buck B that's Buck Rogers.
- 33:21Speaker 2: But war games? Would you how about a thermone nuclear war?
- 33:26Speaker 2: Remember that?
- 33:26Speaker 1: How about? And yeah, it was Matthew Broderick and Ali Sheety.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Of course, I remember that they're listening to this podcast
- 33:31Speaker 2: and you haven't seen War Games. I need you to
- 33:34Speaker 2: put it on after this podcast is over because it
- 33:36Speaker 2: is such a good movie.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, you don't have to put it on
- 33:39Speaker 1: after the podcast, I.
- 33:40Speaker 2: Think, yeah, well not during, right. I remember being a
- 33:42Speaker 2: kid and thinking, well, everything Matthew Broderick did when I
- 33:45Speaker 2: was a kid, I just thought was incredible. I just
- 33:47Speaker 2: wanted to be Matthew Broderick.
- 33:49Speaker 1: Especially in war games. In war games and in Ferris
- 33:51Speaker 1: Bueller's Day.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Oh yes, of course. I mean he's kind of the
- 33:54Speaker 2: same character.
- 33:55Speaker 1: Well kind of s and war games he was like
- 33:58Speaker 1: a kid that didn't have a lot of friends, and
- 34:00Speaker 1: Ferris Bueller he was the king of He's such.
- 34:02Speaker 2: A good actor. Though in Wargames, you know, by the way,
- 34:05Speaker 2: a little trivia, they made a sequel to Wargames that
- 34:08Speaker 2: the writer director had nothing to do with. What was
- 34:11Speaker 2: it called I don't know. Joelle will insert that here
- 34:14Speaker 2: later in her voice.
- 34:16Speaker 4: War Games the Dead Code, which came out in two
- 34:19Speaker 4: thousand and eight, attrected by Stuart Gillard.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Yeah, but neither the two stars Ali Sheety or Matthew
- 34:25Speaker 2: Broddock were in it, right right? That one's not the
- 34:28Speaker 2: sequel is not Zach and Donald approved. But the first
- 34:32Speaker 2: movie is. Oh, I just the eleven thirty three. I
- 34:34Speaker 2: just wanted to point out that's the very first time
- 34:36Speaker 2: we saw the lounge, our Doctor's lounge where so many
- 34:39Speaker 2: much of the show ends up taking place. And the
- 34:41Speaker 2: introduction of Doug. I didn't realize Doug got introduced so early.
- 34:44Speaker 1: Neither did I. I didn't realize that either. I also
- 34:48Speaker 1: remember that pac Man machine and how when we were
- 34:51Speaker 1: working that was an actual, real working pac Man game
- 34:55Speaker 1: and I would get kicked off a set. I remember
- 34:58Speaker 1: Franklin Got Better and Scott Harris kicking me up. These
- 35:01Speaker 1: were the first ads on.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Scrub Assistant Directors.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I remember them kicking me off set because I
- 35:07Speaker 1: kept trying to get the high score on pac Man.
- 35:10Speaker 1: I remember that pac Man game, and I remember when
- 35:12Speaker 1: they finally made a sort of pac Man game didn't work,
- 35:14Speaker 1: and I was so pissed off.
- 35:15Speaker 2: At a certain point, they made it so it wouldn't
- 35:17Speaker 2: function even if you plugged it in. They got wise.
- 35:19Speaker 1: I loved that. I thought that was the coolest set
- 35:22Speaker 1: piece ever.
- 35:23Speaker 2: And I was happy to see Doug because he's very funny.
- 35:26Speaker 2: And I remember in the Wizard of ob episode which
- 35:29Speaker 2: I directed, one of the funniest lines he ever said,
- 35:32Speaker 2: which was, dead people should be dead. Do you remember
- 35:35Speaker 2: when I come back to life?
- 35:36Speaker 1: I do remember.
- 35:37Speaker 2: Why are you hitting me? I thought you were dead?
- 35:39Speaker 2: Why are you hitting me? Because dead people should be dead?
- 35:43Speaker 1: I would have done the same.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Thing, Okay, I thought at thirteen fifty, there's a cool
- 35:47Speaker 2: moment where, just stylistically, Adam Bernstein and again just sort
- 35:50Speaker 2: of setting up the style of the show where everyone's
- 35:53Speaker 2: looking into the lens talking to me, and then it
- 35:55Speaker 2: cuts to Judy and she does it, and then she
- 35:57Speaker 2: looks down and the camera pulls back and I'm next
- 36:00Speaker 2: to her.
- 36:01Speaker 1: I just think she looks at you.
- 36:02Speaker 2: I stylistically, that was really kind of a cool thing.
- 36:05Speaker 1: That was pretty cool.
- 36:06Speaker 2: Adam sort of set the bar early on as the
- 36:08Speaker 2: director of episode one and two that the camera was
- 36:12Speaker 2: going to be a character in the show, and every
- 36:13Speaker 2: director that came on after would add their own little
- 36:16Speaker 2: bit of style to it, especially in this first season,
- 36:19Speaker 2: you know, figuring out innovative ways to move the camera
- 36:22Speaker 2: and to do colored camera shots and trick shots.
- 36:24Speaker 1: Adam really he did us a great service, him and
- 36:27Speaker 1: Bill by giving us something. In hospital shows, it's really
- 36:31Speaker 1: about the doctors and the nurses and everything like that.
- 36:35Speaker 1: Adam and Bill found a way to make the hospital
- 36:37Speaker 1: a character in the show. And they found a way
- 36:40Speaker 1: to do that early on, you know what I mean.
- 36:43Speaker 1: So when you're there, it's never the same. It doesn't
- 36:45Speaker 1: feel like, you know, I'm watching a hospital procedural or
- 36:50Speaker 1: I'm watching It's something wacky about it. There's something different
- 36:53Speaker 1: about it. And I think that really helped with telling
- 36:56Speaker 1: the story, you know, of JD and his group of
- 37:00Speaker 1: friends in this hospital.
- 37:01Speaker 2: Yeah, and Adam. I think Adam really set the tone
- 37:03Speaker 2: for that, and I remember him and of course the
- 37:06Speaker 2: next few that come up, you know, all all the
- 37:08Speaker 2: directors in this in this first batch. I think Mark
- 37:11Speaker 2: Bucklan's another one coming up that really helped set the
- 37:14Speaker 2: style in the look. Some things were phased out, as
- 37:17Speaker 2: it said, the whip noises like yeah, when you go
- 37:20Speaker 2: when you're moving your hands. Yeah, So there was a
- 37:23Speaker 2: lot of sound effects obviously, but that whip thing is
- 37:25Speaker 2: like one thing they toned down. This high school fantasy
- 37:27Speaker 2: that starts at fifteen minutes or so is so funny,
- 37:30Speaker 2: so well done, don't you think hilarious?
- 37:32Speaker 1: Dude? The fact that they put the pimples on her
- 37:34Speaker 1: and the braces and turn band stuff and then all
- 37:37Speaker 1: of us being like the cool kids and stuff like that. Yeah,
- 37:41Speaker 1: you know, Aloma is I guess really the only nurse
- 37:45Speaker 1: from the pilot that made it all the way through,
- 37:48Speaker 1: because there's people that surrounded Judy where I'm like, I
- 37:51Speaker 1: don't recognize any of these people.
- 37:53Speaker 2: I recognize a few. I recognize a couple of the women.
- 37:56Speaker 2: By the way, none of the people who became like
- 37:58Speaker 2: major background on people that we focused on are in
- 38:02Speaker 2: any of these episodes. It'd be interesting when as we
- 38:04Speaker 2: go to watch, it'll be in triest to see when
- 38:05Speaker 2: we see their first appearances.
- 38:06Speaker 1: Like, yeah, I saw one dude who was this bald
- 38:08Speaker 1: guy and he kind of looks like Colonel Doctor but
- 38:11Speaker 1: he's a bald headed guy and he shows up in
- 38:13Speaker 1: so many scenes like back to back to back to
- 38:15Speaker 1: back to back.
- 38:16Speaker 2: Yeah, let's talk about how and Cox's apartment.
- 38:19Speaker 1: That looks like a set, dude, No, it's so bad.
- 38:21Speaker 1: First of all, looked like a set, dude.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Not to dis cabot because I'm sure that at this
- 38:25Speaker 2: time they were already out of money. But this is
- 38:28Speaker 2: the only set so far that looks like they just
- 38:30Speaker 2: put a couch into a hospital. Like there's so many
- 38:35Speaker 2: things on the walls that are like, why is there
- 38:36Speaker 2: a speaker on the side of his wall at his house?
- 38:39Speaker 1: Not only that, why is that big window there that
- 38:42Speaker 1: goes nowhere?
- 38:44Speaker 2: I know, it's so funny, and then we justify it
- 38:47Speaker 2: by making a joke about like, oh, your apartment is
- 38:49Speaker 2: so cold. But I was like, wow, man, they I
- 38:51Speaker 2: think this is This was the first moment like where
- 38:54Speaker 2: does he? Where does he live? But he live in
- 38:55Speaker 2: the hospital.
- 38:57Speaker 1: Crazy.
- 38:58Speaker 2: I love this scene between me and Johnny and this
- 38:59Speaker 2: is one of the one of his lines of scrubs.
- 39:01Speaker 2: I remember, do you want to be the big spoon
- 39:02Speaker 2: of the little spoon?
- 39:03Speaker 1: I had no idea what spooning was. I knew that
- 39:05Speaker 1: you could spoon, like I know what spooning was, but
- 39:08Speaker 1: I didn't know that you could be there was a
- 39:10Speaker 1: big spoon and a little spoon. I had no idea
- 39:12Speaker 1: that that existed, and that kind of was like, oo,
- 39:15Speaker 1: little spoon. That whole scene is hilarious, you know what
- 39:19Speaker 1: I mean, even though when he kicks you out and
- 39:21Speaker 1: he gives you the lesson and he's like, now come here,
- 39:24Speaker 1: let me give you a hug, and you're like, get
- 39:26Speaker 1: the fuck out of here. He's like, come on, come on,
- 39:27Speaker 1: come on, give me a hug, and you're like me
- 39:29Speaker 1: and he's like, come on, give me a hug, and
- 39:31Speaker 1: you go for the hugg. It's like, get out of here.
- 39:33Speaker 2: Yeah, very funny. He's so good and really just so good.
- 39:36Speaker 2: I really just liked that scene between the two of us.
- 39:38Speaker 2: It really kind of showed the dance with Johnny see
- 39:41Speaker 2: where it was going to be like, you know, fucking
- 39:43Speaker 2: with me a ton and really but then eventually there'd
- 39:46Speaker 2: always be a lesson underneath it, and he'd always drop
- 39:49Speaker 2: in and be a good mentor. I mean, that's when
- 39:51Speaker 2: this is called my mentor. So he's doesn't want me
- 39:54Speaker 2: to a mentor, doesn't mean a mentor. And in the
- 39:55Speaker 2: end he finally drops some knowledge like you can't save
- 39:58Speaker 2: these people. All you can do is do your You're
- 40:00Speaker 2: not responsible for changing people's habits. You can't make someone
- 40:03Speaker 2: who's gonna smoke not smoke. And I know that this
- 40:06Speaker 2: is something and that doctors must deal with all the time.
- 40:09Speaker 2: They wish they could make their patients stop eating that
- 40:12Speaker 2: fast food, they wish they could make their patients stop smoking,
- 40:14Speaker 2: whatever it is. Johnny's trying to teach JD early on, like,
- 40:17Speaker 2: you don't have control over over that. You can only
- 40:20Speaker 2: do what you can do.
- 40:21Speaker 1: I had made a note on that. Also, when doctors
- 40:24Speaker 1: come into the hospital for the first few months, maybe
- 40:28Speaker 1: even more than that, they take everything so personal. And
- 40:34Speaker 1: that's great to have that type of attitude, but if
- 40:38Speaker 1: you continue that type of attitude, it's going to be
- 40:42Speaker 1: really hard for you to make it as a doctor,
- 40:44Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And that's what JD had
- 40:49Speaker 1: to experience, you know what I mean. JD cared so
- 40:52Speaker 1: much about Will and you know, and Will quitting his
- 40:57Speaker 1: cigarette addiction, and he thought that that was a bonding
- 41:01Speaker 1: experience between him and doctor Cox. You know, dude, I
- 41:03Speaker 1: know you're thinking about it, and let's talk it over
- 41:06Speaker 1: so we can come back in tomorrow with a game
- 41:08Speaker 1: plan and stop this dude from smoking cigarettes. And at
- 41:12Speaker 1: the end of the day, that wasn't your job. Your
- 41:16Speaker 1: job is to test and treat, you know what I mean.
- 41:19Speaker 1: That was JD's job. Let's test him and see what
- 41:23Speaker 1: ailments he has, and any ailment we find, we're gonna
- 41:27Speaker 1: treat and try and save him from all of this
- 41:31Speaker 1: extracurricular activity of you giving a crap about you know
- 41:35Speaker 1: how he got here. That's not in the cards because
- 41:38Speaker 1: at the end of the day, if this person does
- 41:40Speaker 1: pass away, how do you develop the strength to get
- 41:44Speaker 1: up again? If you were so so invested in this
- 41:48Speaker 1: person's well being. And as much as that sucks to hear,
- 41:53Speaker 1: that's how doctors have to be. That's how nurses have
- 41:56Speaker 1: to be. They're gonna deal with death, they're gonna deal
- 41:58Speaker 1: with life, they're gonna deal with disease, They're going to
- 42:01Speaker 1: deal with all of these things. And how do you
- 42:04Speaker 1: put up a shield so at the end of the day,
- 42:08Speaker 1: if you do lose somebody, you can come back the
- 42:10Speaker 1: next day and do your job. Yeah, you know what
- 42:13Speaker 1: I mean. And that was what Cox was trying to
- 42:16Speaker 1: prepare j D for.
- 42:17Speaker 2: Yeah, early on, early on in the show because like
- 42:19Speaker 2: he's like, you need to get used to this. This
- 42:22Speaker 2: is not You're not going to be able to save
- 42:23Speaker 2: every single person and change all their habits. By the way,
- 42:26Speaker 2: I'm looking at the credits and I see that John
- 42:28Speaker 2: Doosey's who was the guest star as Will. His character's
- 42:30Speaker 2: name Will Forte. And was there some connection to Will Forte?
- 42:35Speaker 2: Did someone It wasn't one of our writers was partnered
- 42:38Speaker 2: with Will Forte.
- 42:39Speaker 1: I do believe you're right. I was in Schwartz Schwartz
- 42:42Speaker 1: with Schwartz. Yeah, speaking of Mike schwartz Zach. The show
- 42:45Speaker 1: that I'm that I shot all last year, Emergence, which
- 42:49Speaker 1: is on ABC, which is another Disney show. The creators
- 42:53Speaker 1: of that show wrote on ED back in the day
- 42:56Speaker 1: with a young Mike Schwartz.
- 42:58Speaker 2: Oh really, that's that must be where Bill Off found him. Maybe,
- 43:01Speaker 2: Oh yeah, ED came first because I remember when the
- 43:02Speaker 2: show ED was on and Tom Cavanaugh's picture went up
- 43:06Speaker 2: on billboards and I still didn't have a job. My
- 43:09Speaker 2: mom would call me and be like, there is a
- 43:12Speaker 2: show where this guy looks exactly like you and and
- 43:17Speaker 2: he's on billboards everywhere. And I remember thinking like great, Yeah,
- 43:21Speaker 2: that's not me, mom.
- 43:22Speaker 1: It's kind of it's kind of crazy how he came
- 43:24Speaker 1: on to be a brother later on. I know, I
- 43:28Speaker 1: wish they I wish they would have had. I wish
- 43:29Speaker 1: you would have had two brothers. I wish it would
- 43:31Speaker 1: have been him and then Dak Shepherd as your other brother.
- 43:34Speaker 2: I know, I get this thing. I don't know what
- 43:36Speaker 2: it is about my face, but people tell me I
- 43:39Speaker 2: look like so many different people. Obviously Dak Shepherd's the
- 43:43Speaker 2: most common these days, but I used to get Tom
- 43:46Speaker 2: Cavanaugh and Ray Romano.
- 43:48Speaker 1: Yeah I remember Ray Romano.
- 43:50Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I Finally early on when our show launched,
- 43:53Speaker 2: everyone was saying that I was like young Ray Romano.
- 43:56Speaker 2: And I remember I met Ray Romano like on a
- 43:58Speaker 2: press line somewhere, and he looked at me and he
- 44:01Speaker 2: was like, oh, it's like looking in a mirror. I
- 44:05Speaker 2: couldn't remember if he was finding the comparison.
- 44:08Speaker 1: The funny, can you tell the story about how when
- 44:20Speaker 1: we went to Vegas and I was in the bathroom
- 44:22Speaker 1: and I was washing my hands and I left and
- 44:25Speaker 1: the guy goes, oh, you know who that was, right?
- 44:27Speaker 1: Do you remember the story.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Unfortunately, I remember the story, but I forgot the punchline,
- 44:31Speaker 2: so you're gonna have to tell it.
- 44:32Speaker 1: So we're in Vegas and we're hanging out. It's us,
- 44:35Speaker 1: Josh Rayden, our buddy, Carrie Brothers, and Michael Weston, who
- 44:40Speaker 1: also at some point was on the show.
- 44:43Speaker 2: Yeah, came by the show as private dancer.
- 44:45Speaker 1: Right, right, But Carrie and Josh both had music on
- 44:49Speaker 1: the show, if I remember correctly, right, yes, right, So
- 44:52Speaker 1: we're all in Vegas. We go to Vegas. It's our
- 44:54Speaker 1: first time going to Vegas to as a group, and
- 44:58Speaker 1: we're you know, we're very young, and we've we've got
- 45:00Speaker 1: a little bit of money at this point to spend
- 45:03Speaker 1: in Vegas. We had a really good time. We stayed
- 45:05Speaker 1: at the MGM Grand they hooked it up for us.
- 45:07Speaker 2: The story, as I even correct is I was in
- 45:09Speaker 2: the bathroom. Donald in the bathroom and Donald washed his
- 45:11Speaker 2: hands and then he left and the person that was
- 45:13Speaker 2: in there said to his friend, you know who that was?
- 45:16Speaker 2: And in my mind I'm thinking, like, oh, Donald getting recognized,
- 45:19Speaker 2: And the guy goes who and he goes, that was Erkele.
- 45:23Speaker 2: That was fucking Erkle, dude. And they were like freaking
- 45:27Speaker 2: out that Erkele had been in the bathroom with him.
- 45:29Speaker 1: I love that. What about looking to this day? I
- 45:32Speaker 1: you know, to this day. Anytime I could be mentioned
- 45:35Speaker 1: in the same story as Jalio White, Tay Diggs, all
- 45:39Speaker 1: these people who were like, you know, iconic for being
- 45:43Speaker 1: really good at playing a character. You know, Julia went
- 45:47Speaker 1: on to do Stepan Erkele, which was really freaking awesome
- 45:50Speaker 1: and it showed his range as an actor and everything
- 45:53Speaker 1: like that. Anytime I could be mentioned in the same story,
- 45:55Speaker 1: like one time quest Love hit me up, it was like, Yo,
- 45:57Speaker 1: somebody said I look like you. Was like, that's the
- 46:00Speaker 1: best day ever, dude.
- 46:01Speaker 2: I remember when we first became friends and we'd go
- 46:04Speaker 2: out and about no one knew who I was at all,
- 46:06Speaker 2: but some people would would know Donald's name. But a
- 46:09Speaker 2: lot of people would just be like, yo, yo clueless, clueless.
- 46:12Speaker 2: They would just yell clueless at you right all the time.
- 46:16Speaker 1: YO clueless, clueless, Yo clueless, And then they'd point to
- 46:20Speaker 1: you and be like, YO, clueless boy, his friend, Yo
- 46:22Speaker 1: clueless boy.
- 46:23Speaker 2: His friend look at clueless his friend that's clueless and
- 46:26Speaker 2: clueless his friend.
- 46:27Speaker 1: That story has a horrible ending, though, man, it's a
- 46:30Speaker 1: horrible well. The ending is you know, you did Garden
- 46:33Speaker 1: State and all of a sudden you became Zach Braff
- 46:34Speaker 1: and people were like, oh shit, Zach Braf, and look
- 46:37Speaker 1: who he's hanging out with. He's got clueless with him.
- 46:40Speaker 2: That's not what happened.
- 46:42Speaker 1: That is what happened.
- 46:43Speaker 2: That's funny. I just remember, you know, it's funny the
- 46:46Speaker 2: thing the things that people yell at you on the street,
- 46:48Speaker 2: like you don't get clueless anymore, I'm sure, but I know.
- 46:51Speaker 1: But I get a lot of black scrub thanks the
- 46:52Speaker 1: family guy. I get a lot of black scrubs and
- 46:55Speaker 1: get scrubs and.
- 46:57Speaker 2: You know, yeah, I got I get where's all the time. Yeah,
- 47:00Speaker 2: Sometimes people will know my name and they just talk
- 47:02Speaker 2: to me right away, and I can't figure out if
- 47:05Speaker 2: I know them in real life or they just know
- 47:08Speaker 2: me as an actor. And especially when I'm in New
- 47:10Speaker 2: York because I lived there part of the year, and
- 47:13Speaker 2: people just walking down the street just start talking to you.
- 47:16Speaker 2: And you don't want to be I don't want to
- 47:17Speaker 2: be rude at all, but I'm trying to think, like,
- 47:19Speaker 2: do I know this person or do they just know
- 47:21Speaker 2: my name. One time I was parallel parking in Manhattan
- 47:24Speaker 2: and it was going horribly, and some guy walks by.
- 47:27Speaker 2: He's like, you're killing it, BRAF, and I just couldn't remember. Like,
- 47:34Speaker 2: I just was like, do I know that? I don't
- 47:35Speaker 2: think I know that person. They just give me shit.
- 47:38Speaker 1: That happened to me recently at Starbucks before this whole
- 47:40Speaker 1: quarantine thing happened. I was at Starbucks and a guy
- 47:43Speaker 1: comes up to me and goes, Donald, how you been man?
- 47:45Speaker 1: I'm like, hey, man, how's it going. He's like, you know,
- 47:48Speaker 1: I'm good. And then I realized, Oh, I don't know
- 47:50Speaker 1: this guy. I was like, wait, how do we know
- 47:51Speaker 1: each other? And he says, oh, dude, I'm just such
- 47:54Speaker 1: a huge fan of yours. And I remember thinking, holy cow,
- 47:57Speaker 1: that's how you get caught out there, dude. From here
- 47:59Speaker 1: on out, if somebody says to me, Donald, how's it
- 48:02Speaker 1: going and I don't know who they are, I'm not
- 48:04Speaker 1: gonna be embarrassed anymore, because there's that moment of embarrassment
- 48:08Speaker 1: where you're like.
- 48:08Speaker 2: Wait, I don't want to don't want to.
- 48:12Speaker 1: Want hurt, hurt anybody's feelings. Oh.
- 48:15Speaker 2: I thought of another person that I used to really
- 48:17Speaker 2: get a lot before was Anne Hathaway's boyfriend that went
- 48:21Speaker 2: to jail. Do you remember that guy?
- 48:23Speaker 1: I don't.
- 48:24Speaker 2: He was involved in some I think it was business
- 48:26Speaker 2: or money crime something, but he went to jail. And
- 48:29Speaker 2: I walk in. This is years ago. I walk into
- 48:31Speaker 2: a coffee bean and I walk in and I see
- 48:34Speaker 2: our senial hall and he's looking right at me, and
- 48:36Speaker 2: I don't think. I don't ever met our senial hall,
- 48:39Speaker 2: and but I was kind of geeked out because I
- 48:40Speaker 2: loved arsenial Hall and he kind of smiled at me.
- 48:43Speaker 2: He brought me over to the end of the counter
- 48:45Speaker 2: where they delivered the coffees, and there you can hear
- 48:48Speaker 2: the music. Oh is Eddie Murphy standing there? And I'm
- 48:52Speaker 2: like having one of the greatest moments of my life.
- 48:54Speaker 2: And now when I meet famous people, I can normally
- 48:56Speaker 2: hold it together.
- 48:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm gonna keep it on. I remember saying to
- 48:59Speaker 1: you one time, dude, how do you do this? Man? Like,
- 49:02Speaker 1: that's freaking Benjamin Bratt right there, and you're not even
- 49:04Speaker 1: geeking out, really, You're just like it's not even a
- 49:07Speaker 1: and you're like, I don't, I don't, I don't geek out.
- 49:09Speaker 2: Well, I can hold it together sometimes, but when I
- 49:11Speaker 2: met Eddie Murphy. I mean, I just started gushing. I
- 49:14Speaker 2: was like, Eddie, I'm so sorry, but I just want
- 49:15Speaker 2: to say that, like you were like such an inspiration
- 49:18Speaker 2: to me, and and and and and Beverly Hills cop
- 49:20Speaker 2: I gotta tell you it's I use it as an
- 49:22Speaker 2: example all the time because, like, the bad guys were
- 49:25Speaker 2: like legitimately scary. But he goes, he goes, who that
- 49:28Speaker 2: bad guys weren't scary? Who Victim Maitland? And I was like,
- 49:32Speaker 2: oh my god, Eddie Murphy just said Victor Maitland to
- 49:34Speaker 2: me in a coffee shop. My life is peaked right now.
- 49:37Speaker 2: He's like Victim Maitland and I'm like, no, not like
- 49:39Speaker 2: Victor Maitland. Like, well, I was like the Henchman. He goes, yeah, well,
- 49:42Speaker 2: the henchman was scary. And then he interrupts me and
- 49:44Speaker 2: he goes stares at me, and he goes, anybody ever
- 49:46Speaker 2: tell you look like Anne Hathaway's boyfriend that went to jail?
- 49:52Speaker 2: And I said what. He goes yeah, because I was
- 49:55Speaker 2: watching the news and I was like, that looks like
- 49:57Speaker 2: the dude from Scrubs. And I thought, this is the
- 50:03Speaker 2: most surreal moment of my entire life. Eddie Murphy is
- 50:07Speaker 2: telling recognize. A he knows who I am because he knows
- 50:09Speaker 2: what scrubs is, and B he's trying to figure out
- 50:12Speaker 2: if I've been told before that I look like Ann
- 50:14Speaker 2: Hathaway's boyfriend.
- 50:15Speaker 1: That is hilarious.
- 50:16Speaker 2: By the way, the last part of that story, I
- 50:17Speaker 2: gotta tell you because it's so funny. I go to
- 50:19Speaker 2: the Lama's Rob premiere, the movie premiere, and because I
- 50:22Speaker 2: love Lama's Rob, as you know, and.
- 50:25Speaker 1: Drink with me two days gone barre.
- 50:29Speaker 2: All right, So, by the way, we'll do a special
- 50:32Speaker 2: episode of this podcast where we just sing. Anyway, I'm
- 50:36Speaker 2: walking and I know Anne Hathaway as an acquaintance, and
- 50:40Speaker 2: and this is right around when all that shit went
- 50:42Speaker 2: down with her boyfriend, and I'm walking towards her to
- 50:45Speaker 2: say congratulations, and her father stands up and like gives
- 50:51Speaker 2: me this look like I'm gonna kill this mother fucker.
- 50:55Speaker 2: He's got the balls to crash my daughter's mirror. I'm
- 51:01Speaker 2: gonna strangle him. And I got within ten feet of
- 51:05Speaker 2: the dude and then his face just fucking broke and
- 51:08Speaker 2: he went like sided breath relief and realized that it
- 51:11Speaker 2: was me, not the ex boyfriend.
- 51:13Speaker 1: Oh man, Now you know what black people go through
- 51:15Speaker 1: all the time.
- 51:19Speaker 2: All right, I think we have a caller, right, Joelle.
- 51:22Speaker 1: We do.
- 51:22Speaker 4: Welcome Kayla.
- 51:24Speaker 3: Thanks for being here.
- 51:25Speaker 1: What's up? Kayla?
- 51:26Speaker 2: Hi? Kayla?
- 51:27Speaker 1: He yo?
- 51:28Speaker 2: Hi? How are you?
- 51:31Speaker 4: I'm good. They're crazy but good.
- 51:34Speaker 1: I hear yeah, we hear you. It's crazy times.
- 51:36Speaker 2: Thank you so much for being our second ever caller.
- 51:39Speaker 2: We're very, very excited to have you. We can answer
- 51:42Speaker 2: any question you have about anything, well almost any question,
- 51:45Speaker 2: but mostly Scrubs related. That's about it.
- 51:47Speaker 4: That's fair, Okay. I guess like my first question would
- 51:51Speaker 4: be a lot of shows that premiered at that time
- 51:54Speaker 4: had that awkward first season, but for whatever reason for
- 51:59Speaker 4: me a viewer, Scrubs didn't have that. Was that something
- 52:03Speaker 4: that you guys all felt as a cast?
- 52:05Speaker 1: Uh? Speaking for I was just happy to be on
- 52:08Speaker 1: television when I look back at it now. Absolutely, you're
- 52:12Speaker 1: absolutely right. Scrubs started off at a high point and
- 52:15Speaker 1: it just kept going up from there as far as
- 52:18Speaker 1: storytelling goes, And that's really you know, you got to
- 52:21Speaker 1: give props to Bill Lawrence and his team of writers. Also,
- 52:25Speaker 1: you know the crew, and you know how they were
- 52:28Speaker 1: in line and just ready to go. Once we started
- 52:30Speaker 1: with so many shows.
- 52:31Speaker 2: I agree, Kayla, you go. You can't help but go.
- 52:35Speaker 2: Especially with pilots. I'm always saying to friends and when
- 52:38Speaker 2: you know, when you recommend a show, you're like, give
- 52:40Speaker 2: it like three episodes because you know the pilot's good
- 52:43Speaker 2: and everything. But you know there's because the pilots are
- 52:45Speaker 2: so hard. You have to introduce so much, so many characters,
- 52:48Speaker 2: and the tone and the style and the it's so
- 52:50Speaker 2: hard to do a pilot. Have it worked, so I
- 52:52Speaker 2: guess you guys have said this to people too. You're
- 52:54Speaker 2: always like, just give you a couple episodes, Whereas I agree,
- 52:56Speaker 2: Build builded such an amazing job with the pilot and
- 53:00Speaker 2: the first few episodes that he was able to in
- 53:02Speaker 2: twenty three minutes an episode, be able to just launch it.
- 53:05Speaker 2: I'm just looking at the my screen. This one was
- 53:07Speaker 2: like twenty one minutes or so. It's just amazing how
- 53:10Speaker 2: much got crammed in and beautifully woven together.
- 53:13Speaker 1: You know, being on the show. I hate to brag
- 53:15Speaker 1: about the show, but I think that's what made the
- 53:16Speaker 1: show so great, you know what I mean. It's like,
- 53:19Speaker 1: you know, you didn't have to say give it two
- 53:21Speaker 1: or three episodes. By the third episode, though, we were
- 53:24Speaker 1: really on fire. You know, we were really telling great stories.
- 53:27Speaker 1: But we were telling great stories before that. It just,
- 53:31Speaker 1: you know, it just elevated even higher after episode three
- 53:34Speaker 1: because we found our groove.
- 53:36Speaker 4: I love that because I remember my mom asked me,
- 53:37Speaker 4: I probably feel like I need to start something, and
- 53:40Speaker 4: I said, you should start Scrubbs from the beginning, because
- 53:43Speaker 4: I know you came in at this some pieces. She's like, see,
- 53:45Speaker 4: you don't have an episode for me to start, and
- 53:46Speaker 4: I said, no, you start from episode one.
- 53:48Speaker 1: I love that. That's so awesome.
- 53:50Speaker 2: That's great, Kayla. Do you have another question? Just because
- 53:53Speaker 2: we're all in isolation and have nothing to do but
- 53:54Speaker 2: to talk to you?
- 53:56Speaker 4: Sure, so, I guess what's so great? Which is funny?
- 54:00Speaker 4: You say episode three? Episode two is probably my favorite
- 54:04Speaker 4: because so many of the show's major relationships are established
- 54:08Speaker 4: in that episode. So was that chemistry instantaneous or did
- 54:12Speaker 4: that come from filming episodes over the coming week.
- 54:15Speaker 1: You know what's crazy is that that's how we opened the
- 54:17Speaker 1: show today. Pretty much. We talked about how episode two
- 54:22Speaker 1: it really sets off the journey that a lot of
- 54:25Speaker 1: these characters are going to have together, Carla and Turk,
- 54:28Speaker 1: Carla and Elliott, everybody in the hospital and doctor kelso
- 54:33Speaker 1: Jd and Cox. All of these stories are really starting
- 54:38Speaker 1: to bubble at this point, you know what I mean,
- 54:40Speaker 1: or starting to you know, gurgle, Yeah, gurgle whatever, Sure,
- 54:46Speaker 1: I don't. I don't know if we should use gurgle.
- 54:48Speaker 2: No, Like you know, when like a boiling water starts
- 54:50Speaker 2: to come to a gurgle. Isn't that the word?
- 54:52Speaker 1: No, it's not. That's not what gurgle means.
- 54:55Speaker 2: Thinking of gargle, not gurgling. Gurgle are different. I just
- 54:58Speaker 2: like saying gurgle. Another big thing was that we all
- 55:02Speaker 2: genuinely got along. Like you know, a lot of shows,
- 55:05Speaker 2: you're meeting all these new people. Just like any job,
- 55:06Speaker 2: there's any people you don't like, there's many people that
- 55:08Speaker 2: you do like. We all really clicked, like you know,
- 55:12Speaker 2: and I'm sure Donald and I have both been on
- 55:14Speaker 2: project since then where the magic wasn't there. This was
- 55:18Speaker 2: a project where like all those people we were and
- 55:20Speaker 2: the writers and Bill and the directors, the crew, we
- 55:23Speaker 2: were all friends and we were all hanging out. We
- 55:26Speaker 2: would all go out together. We just really genuinely loved
- 55:29Speaker 2: each other and a testament to the seven main characters
- 55:32Speaker 2: in the show. We all, you know, over nine years.
- 55:35Speaker 2: We had our moments. Of course, just like a family,
- 55:37Speaker 2: you'd get in arguments over things. But but for ninety
- 55:40Speaker 2: nine percent of the time, we all got along really, really,
- 55:42Speaker 2: really well. And I think that that shows in the
- 55:45Speaker 2: relationships in the show. Because we loved each other, we
- 55:48Speaker 2: rooted for each other. If Donald had a moment where
- 55:51Speaker 2: he was killing it, like we weren't trying to upstage
- 55:53Speaker 2: each other. We were like, go, man, go be that,
- 55:55Speaker 2: you're killing it right now, like we were rooting each
- 55:57Speaker 2: other on you know.
- 55:58Speaker 1: Yeah, we definitely for each other's biggest fans at the
- 56:02Speaker 1: time for sure.
- 56:03Speaker 2: Well, thank you, Kayla, thank you for calling in, and
- 56:05Speaker 2: thank you for for being our second ever caller.
- 56:08Speaker 4: Thank you guys so much for having me.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Thank you. Stay safe out there.
- 56:11Speaker 1: Where are you calling from? Are you in California? Are
- 56:14Speaker 1: you you're in Atlanta?
- 56:16Speaker 2: Yeah? Okay, we're on lockdown. Yeah, stay safe, Kayla.
- 56:23Speaker 3: Yea.
- 56:26Speaker 2: And I want to say, if you want to call
- 56:27Speaker 2: in to our podcast here, you're going to send an
- 56:30Speaker 2: email to Scrubs iHeart at gmail dot com. Is that right?
- 56:36Speaker 2: Joel Okay scrubsiheart at gmail dot com and we're going

- 57:04Speaker 2: Well, constructive criticism.
- 57:06Speaker 1: You could be like I'd like to hear more about this,
- 57:08Speaker 1: or I'd like to hear more about that, But don't
- 57:10Speaker 1: all of a sudden get on there and be like
- 57:12Speaker 1: just hating.
- 57:13Speaker 2: Well, people are gonna do that anyway. Donald, it's the innerwebs.
- 57:15Speaker 1: Nobody likes a hater. I'm just gonna keep it real
- 57:17Speaker 1: with y'all.
- 57:18Speaker 2: No one likes hater raid. Don't drink hater raid. That's
- 57:20Speaker 2: what you used to say.
- 57:21Speaker 1: Would Taylor Swift say, because the hater's gonna hate hate hate,
- 57:25Speaker 1: don't be that. You know what?
- 57:26Speaker 2: I like the Taylor Swift lyric, and I'm just like, damn,
- 57:29Speaker 2: it's seven to eighty am when she's talking about getting
- 57:32Speaker 2: trolled early in the morning.
- 57:34Speaker 1: I like, got a long list of ex lovers. That's
- 57:37Speaker 1: that's my favorite sing That might be my favorite, not
- 57:41Speaker 1: that that has anything to do with this show, but
- 57:43Speaker 1: that might be my favorite song.
- 57:44Speaker 2: All right, listen, you know what my favorite song is? Donald?
- 57:46Speaker 1: That she sings, that she sings.
- 57:48Speaker 2: You know what my favorite song is Donald, And I
- 57:50Speaker 2: think we should go into it right now. It's our
- 57:51Speaker 2: theme song that we should say. We want to thank
- 57:54Speaker 2: you to Charlie Pooth who wrote the music and Donald
- 57:57Speaker 2: and I wrote the lyrics, and I think now is
- 57:59Speaker 2: a better time than ever to start singing it. So
- 58:02Speaker 2: thank you for listening. Thank you to all the medical
- 58:06Speaker 2: person out there out there who are on the front lines,
- 58:10Speaker 2: and thank you so much. And we we're watching you,
- 58:12Speaker 2: and we see you and we celebrate you. And this
- 58:15Speaker 2: was a show that was always trying and aspired to
- 58:17Speaker 2: be a love letter to the medical workers and U
- 58:20Speaker 2: and now more than ever, we want to say thank
- 58:22Speaker 2: you so much for being the heroes of today. Thank
- 58:25Speaker 2: you so much, and now let's sing.
- 58:27Speaker 3: Don here's some stories that show we made about a
- 58:33Speaker 3: bunch of talks and nurses said.
- 58:37Speaker 1: He's the stories natural so YadA here yea he
- 58:47Speaker 2: Show
