- 0:08Speaker 1: As always, it's a tough week to be a wing defence.
- 0:10Speaker 1: This week is probably tougher than others, but we are
- 0:13Speaker 1: here to get through this. You're on No Dribble.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Strap in!
- 0:17Speaker 3: MUSIC There it is.
- 0:30Speaker 1: How was that?
- 0:31Speaker 3: Much better.
- 0:33Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you. Kat gave me some feedback there.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Voice coaching.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Voice coaching. I like that. We're going to maybe at
- 0:41Speaker 1: the One Year to Go event do the, what's the
- 0:44Speaker 1: helium balloons again like we did at the end of
- 0:46Speaker 1: your birthday?
- 0:49Speaker 2: No.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Did we ring you when we did that list? Yes,
- 0:50Speaker 4: you did. And you sent me videos, which I still have.
- 0:54Speaker 4: And I'm waiting for the right moment to release them.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Never not funny. Never not funny.
- 0:57Speaker 4: Never not funny.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Well, particularly when it's coming out of a little person.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Oh, I think it's funny when it's coming out of
- 1:07Speaker 4: a big person because it doesn't fit.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Oh, funny.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Anyhoo, hello. Have we said hello?
- 1:13Speaker 1: My name's Carol. This is Wendell. You're on No Dribble,
- 1:16Speaker 1: the podcast where we talk about so much more.
- 1:19Speaker 3: I'm Kath Cox.
- 1:20Speaker 4: I'm Liz.
- 1:22Speaker 5: Oh god there's a guy at the gym one of
- 1:29Speaker 5: our trainers and um like he's a very high level crossfitter.
- 1:33Speaker 1: But he's got these things now and i remember them
- 1:35Speaker 1: being big like in the 70s so they're these boots
- 1:38Speaker 1: that he puts on and he'll hang himself up oh
- 1:40Speaker 1: yeah yes and he does 10 minutes and at the
- 1:43Speaker 1: end of it His voice sounds like he's been having
- 1:45Speaker 1: hell even.
- 1:47Speaker 3: That's because his balls have probably gone.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Well, they've gone somewhere.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Why does he do that for?
- 1:55Speaker 3: What did they used to do?
- 1:56Speaker 1: I don't know, stretching the spine.
- 1:59Speaker 4: Traction.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Traction, yeah.
- 2:01Speaker 4: Making him taller.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:03Speaker 3: They were huge in the 80s, weren't they? Isn't it
- 2:05Speaker 3: funny the random fads that come in and go out again?
- 2:08Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:10Speaker 1: So yeah, but he is like, he is a professional
- 2:12Speaker 1: CrossFit athlete and spent like, he is not just doing
- 2:16Speaker 1: a lot of training, but spending a lot of time
- 2:19Speaker 1: learning about physiology and his training. So I'm sure there's
- 2:22Speaker 1: a good reason for it, but we all take the
- 2:24Speaker 1: piss out of it.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Yes.
- 2:26Speaker 3: I think it's the perfect spot odds.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I do.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I was at, I told you I was at lunch
- 2:31Speaker 1: on Friday and I met a guy who had been
- 2:33Speaker 1: an Olympian twice, 92 and 96. And In his defence,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I was the one who said, tell me your story.
- 2:41Speaker 1: And then about two minutes after, and I'm going, oh,
- 2:44Speaker 1: my God, that's amazing, two Olympics, blah, blah, blah. And
- 2:47Speaker 1: then some of his friends come over and I said, oh,
- 2:49Speaker 1: is he talking about that again? And within two minutes,
- 2:51Speaker 1: and I love this about Australians, that we'll go, we
- 2:54Speaker 1: really admire that you're an Olympian, but now, 90 seconds later,
- 2:57Speaker 1: we're going to take the piss out of you. And
- 3:00Speaker 1: I think that's very culturally Australian, isn't it? But it's so...
- 3:04Speaker 1: Love you, mate, but part of that, how we're going
- 3:06Speaker 1: to express that is by choking the piss.
- 3:08Speaker 4: Yeah, we'll absolutely bring you back down to our level. Yeah, yeah, totally.
- 3:12Speaker 3: What was the sport? Rowing.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 3:15Speaker 1: So sitting down.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Was he the cocks or the rower?
- 3:17Speaker 1: I think he was the rower.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Okay.
- 3:19Speaker 1: I didn't ask.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Were you eye to eye with him or not?
- 3:21Speaker 1: Well, we were sitting down. But also, everyone's taller than me.
- 3:26Speaker 3: No, but the cocks wouldn't be. That's why I'm asking.
- 3:27Speaker 3: Wouldn't they?
- 3:28Speaker 2: No. How tall is he?
- 3:29Speaker 3: Well, they're going to fit in the tiny little brrp
- 3:31Speaker 3: brrp at the back.
- 3:32Speaker 1: All right, I'm going to.
- 3:33Speaker 3: And they sound like they've been on the helium.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Well, I'm going to look up what an Olympic cock's
- 3:40Speaker 1: size is.
- 3:41Speaker 4: I think the answer will be very little.
- 3:43Speaker 3: One size fits all.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Dirty little.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Person with a great big voice.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Doing the Googles.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Doing some research here.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Right.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Doing the Googles. That sounds like something an old lady
- 3:53Speaker 4: would say.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:55Speaker 4: Speaking of old ladies, I don't know if that wasn't
- 3:57Speaker 4: a bad segue. Yeah.
- 3:59Speaker 3: You're all over these segues.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Love the segue. I had to be with an old
- 4:02Speaker 4: lady moment on Saturday. I'm very sore.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Did you fart and hurt your back?
- 4:07Speaker 2: I wish.
- 4:09Speaker 4: That would be A, funnier and B, less painful. No,
- 4:12Speaker 4: last Saturday I was– You know, I'm playing in my
- 4:15Speaker 4: comeback year in Div 1 and I've touch wood managed
- 4:18Speaker 4: to get through the season largely unscathed. Body clash Saturday,
- 4:22Speaker 4: I landed on my coccyx.
- 4:25Speaker 3: Oh, no.
- 4:26Speaker 2: It was.
- 4:27Speaker 1: How tall was he?
- 4:28Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Does he sit on the back of the boat?
- 4:35Speaker 4: It hurt my back.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 4:38Speaker 4: Anyway, but then as I landed, I landed on my–
- 4:41Speaker 4: and it hurt. And so I flung myself back to
- 4:44Speaker 4: not land on my coccyx and I hit my head.
- 4:46Speaker 4: On the concrete?
- 4:47Speaker 3: On the concrete.
- 4:48Speaker 4: And I've got an egg the size of a goose.
- 4:50Speaker 3: What were you trying to do at the time? Because
- 4:56Speaker 3: this is where the real stories are.
- 4:58Speaker 4: No, I was trying to get the ball and I
- 4:59Speaker 4: was never a chance of getting the ball. So I
- 5:01Speaker 4: was behaving like a bit of a windmill and I
- 5:07Speaker 4: lost my footing and boom. And everyone came over to,
- 5:10Speaker 4: you know, the windmill. Like I was playing with my
- 5:13Speaker 4: daughter and she runs over to go, okay, are you okay?
- 5:15Speaker 4: And I looked up and I saw this face and
- 5:16Speaker 4: I was like, everyone, go away. Just leave me alone.
- 5:20Speaker 2: So I just lay.
- 5:20Speaker 4: There and held my head.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Waking your head on the floorboards was always bad enough,
- 5:24Speaker 3: but on outside asphalt.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Yeah, and I put my head behind because I thought
- 5:28Speaker 4: I knew I had this lunch that we had to
- 5:30Speaker 4: go to on Tuesday and I thought if I have
- 5:32Speaker 4: to go with a big bald patch at the back
- 5:35Speaker 4: of my head because I have to have stitches.
- 5:38Speaker 1: What about the bike helmet? There's stitches. She's the chair.
- 5:43Speaker 2: I know.
- 5:44Speaker 3: And then you need the sticks. You know how when
- 5:46Speaker 3: you go hiking and the older people sometimes have the sticks?
- 5:48Speaker 3: You need some walking sticks.
- 5:49Speaker 4: Yes, I do. And little knee pads and little elbow pads. Yeah,
- 5:54Speaker 4: I've always been clumsy. Matthew, the meat tray has always
- 5:56Speaker 4: said that he was going to buy me a helmet
- 5:57Speaker 4: and some knee pads and I think I might need it.
- 6:00Speaker 4: I've only got a couple more games to go, but
- 6:02Speaker 4: if I get away unscathed and that's the worst that happens,
- 6:04Speaker 4: that's good.
- 6:05Speaker 1: To you when you had your perm and your braces?
- 6:08Speaker 4: No, a bit after that. I used to say it
- 6:12Speaker 4: to me when I used to play. Because off the
- 6:15Speaker 4: court I'm really clumsy. When I play, I mean not now,
- 6:18Speaker 4: but when I was playing I was okay. But then
- 6:22Speaker 4: the moment I get off court I'm an idiot. I
- 6:23Speaker 4: trip over my feet. I trip over air.
- 6:25Speaker 3: And can I please tell you how many times I
- 6:28Speaker 3: use you as an example to Harper? I kid you
- 6:32Speaker 3: not because you are so similar. in that little bit clumsy.
- 6:38Speaker 4: Little bit?
- 6:39Speaker 2: I'm so clumsy.
- 6:39Speaker 3: But on court she's actually quite coordinated and I thought,
- 6:42Speaker 3: how is this possible that Liz Ellis made a career
- 6:45Speaker 3: out of it?
- 6:46Speaker 1: So is that Liz being an inspiration or a cautionary tale?
- 6:51Speaker 3: No, it's an inspiration.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Yeah. Absolutely an inspiration. If you are a klutz, there
- 6:56Speaker 4: is hope for you if you can just get on court.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Don't play attack.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Though no yeah no that's right you're much better off
- 7:02Speaker 4: reacting rather than proacting but a lady once said to
- 7:04Speaker 4: me you are such a gazelle on court but what
- 7:07Speaker 4: happens when you get off the court i'm like i
- 7:09Speaker 4: don't know i just go back to i'm such a
- 7:11Speaker 4: klutz yeah.
- 7:12Speaker 3: No but it's it's very very inspirational so thank you
- 7:15Speaker 3: because otherwise i'd be a little worried about my child
- 7:18Speaker 3: long term but.
- 7:21Speaker 4: Oh, that's so funny. I would take all the credit
- 7:24Speaker 4: when she plays goalkeeper for the Swifts of the Diamonds.
- 7:26Speaker 3: You can. Nice. Very good.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Okay, I've got the information.
- 7:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Oh, there we go.
- 7:31Speaker 1: Underworld, underworld. It's not the underworld. It's underworld rowing and
- 7:39Speaker 1: then quick rules. The underworld rowing. A cox must have
- 7:44Speaker 1: a minimum weight of 55 kilos for both men's and
- 7:48Speaker 1: women's event. If they carry less than this minimum, they
- 7:51Speaker 1: have to carry up 15 kilos of dead weight such
- 7:54Speaker 1: as metal or sandbags in the boat to make up
- 7:56Speaker 1: the difference.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Or drugs because it is the underworld.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Height typically between 5'2 and 5'8.
- 8:06Speaker 2: You're in.
- 8:08Speaker 3: This is it.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I'm at the shorter end of Cox.
- 8:11Speaker 4: But nevertheless, like you just need a big voice and
- 8:14Speaker 4: you like you hit all the physical attributes. Can we
- 8:19Speaker 4: get you onto like a boat for the 2032 Olympics?
- 8:24Speaker 1: I've been distracted by something. Do you want to know,
- 8:28Speaker 1: you know how AI, it summarises what you're looking for
- 8:31Speaker 1: and then it says, I'll give you more information. Do
- 8:33Speaker 1: you want to know about coxswain, coxswain equipment like the coxbox?
- 8:39Speaker 3: Oh, what?
- 8:41Speaker 1: Yes, I want to know about the Cox box. Well,
- 8:44Speaker 1: so this will be fun. This whole episode is me
- 8:46Speaker 1: Googling stuff. Yes. Yes, I want to know.
- 8:48Speaker 3: Well, we have Cox's hot box.
- 8:50Speaker 1: Yes.
- 8:50Speaker 3: That's something we do.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Did you patent that? Because I feel like there's a
- 8:55Speaker 4: bit of intellectual property infringement going on here.
- 8:58Speaker 3: I feel like this.
- 9:00Speaker 1: It's just autocorrected it to.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Acid A box.
- 9:04Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Okay, I think we need to abort that because we're
- 9:08Speaker 3: going to end up down some rabbit hole.
- 9:10Speaker 1: But you wanted to, so Liz is trying to claim
- 9:13Speaker 1: that her old person tendency is falling over, even though
- 9:16Speaker 1: we know it's just her tendency. So, but you set
- 9:20Speaker 1: us another challenge this week.
- 9:22Speaker 3: No, no, what's yours?
- 9:24Speaker 1: I have so many old person tendencies. I do too.
- 9:29Speaker 1: really big on punctuation um and so one of my
- 9:34Speaker 1: old person tendencies that i know i can let go
- 9:36Speaker 1: of now is putting two spaces after a sentence when
- 9:40Speaker 1: i'm writing some.
- 9:41Speaker 4: Hang on is that an old person tendency i thought
- 9:43Speaker 4: that was like.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Good no that's not done anymore yeah.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Who says young people.
- 9:49Speaker 3: Oh yeah well they don't even write full words.
- 9:52Speaker 1: It's terrible but i will i will maintain my range
- 9:55Speaker 1: i i look.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Do not let go of that.
- 9:57Speaker 1: No, I will not let go of that.
- 9:59Speaker 4: That and the Oxford comma. They're the two things keeping
- 10:01Speaker 4: us civilised.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Oxford comma.
- 10:04Speaker 2: See?
- 10:04Speaker 3: Clearly I've dropped off already. What's that?
- 10:07Speaker 4: You've got to read to understand what the Oxford comma is.
- 10:08Speaker 3: No, what is it?
- 10:09Speaker 4: Well, it's when you have a list of things and
- 10:13Speaker 4: at the end of it you can, if you say,
- 10:15Speaker 4: I'm trying to think of a funny one but I
- 10:17Speaker 4: can't think of anything funny.
- 10:18Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 10:19Speaker 4: So yes, if you, um, the Oxford comma is the
- 10:23Speaker 4: comma after the last thing before the end. And it
- 10:26Speaker 4: just helps you. I think it actually helps make things
- 10:29Speaker 4: clearer rather than sometimes.
- 10:31Speaker 3: You put these in all my messages to you on
- 10:33Speaker 3: our WhatsApp group guys, they might not be relevant and
- 10:36Speaker 3: make any sense at any point, but I'm doing it.
- 10:39Speaker 1: There's a book on the shelf up there called eats
- 10:41Speaker 1: roots and leaves. And it's a book about punctuation.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Yes.
- 10:44Speaker 1: It's about, um, how easy it is to get these
- 10:49Speaker 1: things confused if you don't have the right punctuation because eats,
- 10:52Speaker 1: roots and leaves could be three separate actions or what
- 10:56Speaker 1: the animal eats and that is roots and leaves.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Okay. Yeah.
- 11:01Speaker 4: Very good.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Yeah. A punctuation podcast. Louise Ellis' dream.
- 11:06Speaker 4: I know.
- 11:07Speaker 3: I know. It was something else. What was it? You
- 11:10Speaker 3: wanted to do some. The lexicon. Yeah.
- 11:14Speaker 1: History of language.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Word nerds, I wanted to call it. Anyway, if I
- 11:17Speaker 4: was at all, like if I had a bit of
- 11:18Speaker 4: spare time, I'd get it up and running. But anyway. Yeah,
- 11:21Speaker 4: you don't have that at the moment.
- 11:22Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:23Speaker 3: My old people, there's a lot and I am reminded
- 11:27Speaker 3: of them when I do them, obviously, at the time.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Then you forget because that's an old person tendency, right?
- 11:31Speaker 3: One of them, though, is I always turn the volume
- 11:34Speaker 3: down when I can't see clearly.
- 11:36Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Do you do that?
- 11:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, I'm just a bit at.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Yeah, but I will never actually put my glasses on.
- 11:42Speaker 3: We've had this conversation before. Always moan when I get
- 11:45Speaker 3: into bed and out of bed. See?
- 11:50Speaker 1: What about in the during?
- 11:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:53Speaker 4: No, that was in the olden days. That was when
- 11:55Speaker 4: she rips cheeks and leaves.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Oh, God. She rips eyes and leaves. Yeah.
- 12:05Speaker 3: It's sad, isn't it?
- 12:06Speaker 4: It is sad.
- 12:07Speaker 3: It's just everything. So the other actually classic, this one,
- 12:10Speaker 3: on Sunday, Saturday or Sunday, the kids want to ride
- 12:14Speaker 3: their bikes now because we've taught them to ride bikes
- 12:16Speaker 3: and the best place are the netball courts. Netball courts
- 12:18Speaker 3: are gold mines for stuff like that. But one of
- 12:21Speaker 3: the parents texted and said, what about heading down this afternoon?
- 12:24Speaker 3: And I said, oh, I've just looked up. The last
- 12:26Speaker 3: game of Netties finishes at 5.30. Like that's too late.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Absolutely not leaving the house past 5.30 when it's getting
- 12:34Speaker 3: dark on a weekend when I'm just tucking into nothing.
- 12:39Speaker 3: Who's doing that?
- 12:40Speaker 1: That's going home.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Even Sunday, like after three on a Sunday, I'm not
- 12:44Speaker 3: your gal.
- 12:46Speaker 4: Catherine, you're getting worse. You're the only person I know
- 12:49Speaker 4: who is planning a trip home before you leave.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:52Speaker 2: No, I am.
- 12:53Speaker 3: I'm like, I don't want to. That's when you're settling in.
- 12:56Speaker 3: So you're sitting down, you've got an olive and a
- 12:58Speaker 3: glass of wine.
- 12:59Speaker 4: You're sitting down. See? I can't go out because I'm
- 13:04Speaker 4: settling into my sitting down.
- 13:05Speaker 3: I'm not getting up. I'm not going out. That's outrageous.
- 13:08Speaker 1: I went to the house on Saturday afternoon to do
- 13:10Speaker 1: something exciting that I've never done before, and that was
- 13:13Speaker 1: I went to the Sydney International Equestrian Centre and watched
- 13:18Speaker 1: some show jumping.
- 13:20Speaker 2: Why?
- 13:21Speaker 4: I have a question.
- 13:22Speaker 3: This is a serious question.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Okay.
- 13:23Speaker 3: And this is a safe spot. Are you dying?
- 13:27Speaker 2: No, well, what's up?
- 13:28Speaker 1: How's the ukulele lesson? Oh, yes.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Out of the blue. It's like you've got a list
- 13:33Speaker 3: of random crap you want to tick off before you die.
- 13:36Speaker 4: Whereas Catherine is clearly not dying because at 3pm she's
- 13:39Speaker 4: sitting in this out of town.
- 13:42Speaker 3: No, what brought that on?
- 13:43Speaker 1: No, well, a friend of mine was visiting from out
- 13:44Speaker 1: of town and his niece was competing and it's like, look,
- 13:48Speaker 1: any interest in coming out to this? And it's like,
- 13:50Speaker 1: of course. Then discovered it was close to an hour's
- 13:53Speaker 1: drive away. But amazing. So this was a facility that
- 13:55Speaker 1: was set up for the Sydney Olympics. And I would 100%
- 14:01Speaker 1: go in the Brisbane Olympics, I'm going to go to netball,
- 14:03Speaker 1: I'm going to go to equestrian. It was so cool.
- 14:06Speaker 1: And these are, we were talking on Wednesday about when
- 14:09Speaker 1: professional athletes have their careers ended in a way that
- 14:13Speaker 1: they don't choose. All of these sports where people are
- 14:17Speaker 1: investing so much time and money.
- 14:20Speaker 3: So this was..
- 14:21Speaker 1: Like a World Cup event. I don't really understand it
- 14:24Speaker 1: because it seemed to be just Australia, but they go.
- 14:28Speaker 1: So they were here. And then in three weeks time,
- 14:30Speaker 1: they're down in Borley Point. Three weeks ago, they were
- 14:34Speaker 1: in Condobolin or somewhere like that, moving all around. They've
- 14:38Speaker 1: invested all this money, these beautiful horses. But Do you
- 14:42Speaker 1: ever find when you go along, I knew nothing about this.
- 14:45Speaker 1: I mean, I got that there were horses, that part.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I wasn't surprised that there were horses involved when I
- 14:51Speaker 1: was going out to the show jumping, but I've never
- 14:53Speaker 1: watched it. But within five minutes? I'm an expert.
- 14:58Speaker 4: You're an expert.
- 14:59Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 15:00Speaker 1: That was a slow run, wasn't it? He'll be disappointed
- 15:02Speaker 1: in that.
- 15:02Speaker 3: No, that's what I was going to ask you. So
- 15:03Speaker 3: is it timed or is it on heights of the jumps?
- 15:06Speaker 3: Is that a separate thing?
- 15:07Speaker 1: No, so it's a course that they have to do
- 15:10Speaker 1: within a time and so they all have to go
- 15:13Speaker 1: over the same. It's not like high jump where they go, oh,
- 15:15Speaker 1: my horse got over it, let's put another bar on it.
- 15:17Speaker 1: So this one, the first one was I think about
- 15:21Speaker 1: 14 obstacles that had to go over and they had
- 15:25Speaker 1: 80 seconds. And of the 22 riders, we saw only
- 15:29Speaker 1: two didn't get a time penalty. So if you knock
- 15:33Speaker 1: over one of the railings, more of the railings of
- 15:37Speaker 1: a single obstacle, you lose four points. And then every
- 15:41Speaker 1: second after the time cap, you get a one-second penalty
- 15:45Speaker 1: on that.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 15:47Speaker 1: The second one was I think there were 24 riders
- 15:49Speaker 1: in the first round. Yes. In the second round, the
- 15:53Speaker 1: top 12 went through. And it's amazing because, of course,
- 15:58Speaker 1: the leaderboard is shifting so rapidly because it's like, well,
- 16:02Speaker 1: that person who came into this round on 12 points
- 16:06Speaker 1: had a perfect run so they don't get over 12 points.
- 16:09Speaker 1: But someone who did better than them comes in with
- 16:12Speaker 1: five points and two obstacles and they're done.
- 16:15Speaker 3: I wonder how many people blame their horse when they
- 16:17Speaker 3: don't have a good day. That was my horse.
- 16:20Speaker 1: Yeah, well, you would, wouldn't you?
- 16:21Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 16:22Speaker 1: I'd be really interested to know, like, what is the,
- 16:26Speaker 1: what they actually do in that second that goes, and
- 16:29Speaker 1: now we're here. Because I assume it's the rider who
- 16:31Speaker 1: makes the decision about when we're going to launch.
- 16:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:35Speaker 1: But, yeah, it was fascinating. But it is funny, like,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I'm finding myself, I'm sitting next to, so my mate
- 16:41Speaker 1: was there and I was sitting next to his brother
- 16:43Speaker 1: and Who's the father of the girl who was competing,
- 16:46Speaker 1: who was at that stage leading the World Cup event,
- 16:50Speaker 1: the 12. It's like a Formula One circuit. What do
- 16:54Speaker 1: they call it? You know, when they do all around
- 16:56Speaker 1: the world in one year. So she was leading that
- 16:58Speaker 1: at that stage. I think she might still be. But
- 17:00Speaker 1: he explains two things to me and then next thing
- 17:03Speaker 1: I'm just..
- 17:04Speaker 4: You are the expert.
- 17:05Speaker 3: Do you cheer? Like people get into it or is
- 17:08Speaker 3: it a quiet person's, you know, sophisticated sport?
- 17:11Speaker 1: You cheer at the end.
- 17:12Speaker 3: Yeah, right. No one's like..
- 17:14Speaker 1: No one is. It's pretty well silent and then if
- 17:18Speaker 1: someone hits a... it hits an obstacle then there's a, oh,
- 17:21Speaker 1: but there's not. It's more like tennis in that regard.
- 17:25Speaker 1: But it is so, so exciting and we're sort of
- 17:28Speaker 1: finding ourselves, I don't know whether you do this when
- 17:30Speaker 1: you watch sport, controlling what's happening with our bodies.
- 17:34Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, all the time.
- 17:38Speaker 3: I have to know what you're doing next week though.
- 17:39Speaker 3: It's got to be just as random as the ukulele
- 17:42Speaker 3: and the show jumping.
- 17:43Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 17:43Speaker 1: I don't have anything random planned.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Suggestions, please, everybody. Dribblers.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Dribblers.
- 17:50Speaker 4: One of my girlfriends does show jumping and she's just
- 17:54Speaker 4: a regular, normal mum. Our kids are friends. And then
- 17:58Speaker 4: she'll put up a post of her in her jodhpurs,
- 18:00Speaker 4: jumping her massive. And I'm like, fuck you're sexy.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Like she's beautiful.
- 18:05Speaker 4: Like when she's on that horse.
- 18:05Speaker 3: She's done it her whole life or is this a
- 18:07Speaker 3: flight thing?
- 18:07Speaker 4: No, she's done it her whole life and she's massively
- 18:09Speaker 4: into it. It's her sort of time away. And obviously
- 18:12Speaker 4: I live in a rural area, so I live on
- 18:14Speaker 4: a farm. But Every time she puts photos of herself
- 18:17Speaker 4: up like jumping, I go back to her and I'm like, oh,
- 18:20Speaker 4: my God, you look so hot.
- 18:21Speaker 3: Yeah, what is it about jumpers and boots?
- 18:23Speaker 1: I really had to restrain myself not to go and
- 18:26Speaker 1: buy an entire new one. Oh my God, look how
- 18:30Speaker 1: good they look.
- 18:31Speaker 3: Yes.
- 18:31Speaker 1: Terrifying horses.
- 18:32Speaker 4: So when we moved to the farm, Matthew had a horse,
- 18:35Speaker 4: the meat tray had a horse, and he's quite the equestrian.
- 18:38Speaker 4: He grew up, he was like doing pony club when
- 18:40Speaker 4: he was little. And so he's got a really good
- 18:43Speaker 4: seat in the saddle. He's a really good rider. And
- 18:45Speaker 4: I said to him, you cannot ride. We've just had
- 18:47Speaker 4: a kid. You've got to go and get a helmet.
- 18:49Speaker 4: And so he went to the horse shop and I
- 18:51Speaker 4: thought he would come back with black jumpers and a,
- 18:54Speaker 4: like a black helmet and like, I don't know, something hot.
- 18:57Speaker 4: And he came back with his, I saw him riding
- 19:01Speaker 4: and he had his King G shorts on and a
- 19:03Speaker 4: white And I was like, that is not the man
- 19:09Speaker 4: from Snowy River. Can you go and try again?
- 19:12Speaker 3: Or at least Dutton Ranch or Yellowstone. Just get yourself
- 19:15Speaker 3: a cowboy hat and a shirt.
- 19:16Speaker 1: I don't think anyone in the man from Snowy River
- 19:19Speaker 1: was wearing a helmet.
- 19:20Speaker 4: It's true. It's hard.
- 19:21Speaker 3: Nor were they wearing their stubbies.
- 19:24Speaker 4: Well, I did. I just wanted him to find a
- 19:26Speaker 4: helmet that allowed him to be the man from Snowy River.
- 19:28Speaker 1: What he wanted was a combination of several members of
- 19:31Speaker 1: the village people.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Oh, no.
- 19:39Speaker 4: That is true.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Matthew, at the next live event, please come and lead
- 19:42Speaker 1: us in the 90s.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll get up for that one.
- 19:45Speaker 1: Macho man. All right, let's take a little break and
- 19:48Speaker 1: come back and talk about something. Okay, so we talked
- 20:03Speaker 1: about this on Wednesday that– There's still a number of
- 20:08Speaker 1: Jamaicans who we haven't heard about. Obviously, the Jamaicans are
- 20:11Speaker 1: incredibly important to Super Netball. They have. So we have
- 20:15Speaker 1: Shanira Sterling-Humphrey and Latanya Wilson-Habris.
- 20:17Speaker 3: And long term.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Yeah. Yes.
- 20:21Speaker 3: Till 2029. How's that? Adelaide Thunderbirds, well played.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Shimona Nelson.
- 20:27Speaker 1: Shimona, yeah.
- 20:28Speaker 4: For the Mavs.
- 20:29Speaker 3: Katie-Ann Dehaney, obviously. Shanice Beckford.
- 20:32Speaker 1: That's exciting.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Whoa.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Fowler. Fowler.
- 20:35Speaker 3: All-in-one team again, but Beckford back, hey? She was good
- 20:39Speaker 3: at the Commonwealth Games. Way to fill a void.
- 20:42Speaker 1: I remember when you were saying Fowler. It took me
- 20:44Speaker 1: a moment.
- 20:45Speaker 3: Oh, so Fowler, no, my apologies, yep.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Well, that's very exciting.
- 20:48Speaker 3: I know. So second team to have announced.
- 20:51Speaker 1: She had a binder of a Commonwealth Games.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Yeah, so good.
- 20:54Speaker 1: I was really sad when she left the year before.
- 20:56Speaker 1: I thought that was a great little– I think the
- 20:58Speaker 1: combination of heights there is a fantastic thing. Yeah. But
- 21:04Speaker 1: I also have some news about Jamaicans. I did promise
- 21:08Speaker 1: you that the Sirens would let us announce another signing. And,
- 21:12Speaker 1: of course, now, first of all, let me ask you
- 21:15Speaker 1: about this. This is my daughter's doll. Should this be
- 21:18Speaker 1: the new mascot costume for the Sirens? I'm a yes.
- 21:25Speaker 1: But I'm comparing it to Gia and Sporty.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Are we going to make her waddle around like that
- 21:30Speaker 3: or are we going to give her some feet?
- 21:31Speaker 1: Maybe she should be allowed to wear whatever she wants
- 21:33Speaker 1: on the top too.
- 21:34Speaker 3: I like it.
- 21:35Speaker 4: So, I mean, I do love a bit of history,
- 21:38Speaker 4: as you know, as I've bored Catherine with when I
- 21:40Speaker 4: dragged her around Pompeii. The sirens comes from... Odysseus. Yeah, Odysseus, right?
- 21:47Speaker 4: And so much of what happens, lots of things get
- 21:51Speaker 4: lost in translation, right? So the most... recent translation of
- 21:55Speaker 4: the Odyssey, or not the most recent, but a recent
- 21:57Speaker 4: one by a woman, has the sirens not being voluptuous merwomen,
- 22:04Speaker 4: but more wise birdwomen. Which I like because.
- 22:08Speaker 3: So the heritage of the bird is alive.
- 22:10Speaker 4: Yes. So, you know, when we go back to the
- 22:12Speaker 4: olden days in the Commonwealth Bank Trophy, speaking of like
- 22:15Speaker 4: ancient Greek mythology, and we all had to be birds
- 22:18Speaker 4: back in the day, I think there's a bit of
- 22:21Speaker 4: a calling, there could be a bit of a calling
- 22:23Speaker 4: back to that.
- 22:23Speaker 3: Oh, a bird call likely.
- 22:25Speaker 4: So I'd like for SEN to investigate that as they
- 22:28Speaker 4: come up with what their mascot might be.
- 22:33Speaker 1: I wonder whether SEN has a Greek historian on staff
- 22:37Speaker 1: in order to..
- 22:39Speaker 2: Really?
- 22:39Speaker 4: If you don't have a Greek historian on staff, what
- 22:42Speaker 4: sort of organisation are you?
- 22:43Speaker 3: Well, yeah, we all do, don't we?
- 22:45Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 22:46Speaker 1: Oh, that's really interesting. And, I mean, they were on
- 22:49Speaker 1: the shore, weren't they? So they weren't in the ocean
- 22:52Speaker 1: in the poem. So it sort of makes sense that
- 22:54Speaker 1: they are not necessarily Daryl Hannah in Splash.
- 23:00Speaker 3: Oh, Daryl Hannah. God, there's a blast from the past. Yeah.
- 23:04Speaker 4: So I thought that was quite interesting. I know there's
- 23:07Speaker 4: been lots of talk about the Sirens as a name.
- 23:10Speaker 3: I love the name.
- 23:10Speaker 4: Yeah, I like it too.
- 23:13Speaker 1: I completely understand why there are a number of people
- 23:17Speaker 1: who don't, who think it's a bit regressive as a
- 23:20Speaker 1: female image, but..
- 23:25Speaker 3: But that's not at all where SEN took it, if
- 23:28Speaker 3: you look at their blurb when they first announced it.
- 23:31Speaker 3: It's a siren that makes all the noise hard to ignore, blah, blah, blah.
- 23:35Speaker 1: So it is maritime in the logo.
- 23:38Speaker 3: It is, correct, yes.
- 23:40Speaker 1: It does look like a bit of an anchor there.
- 23:42Speaker 1: But that doesn't have to be... That doesn't have to
- 23:46Speaker 1: be an anti-feminist take on it either. You know, that
- 23:49Speaker 1: doesn't have to be about, you know, repressive images of
- 23:53Speaker 1: women or whatever. So I'm not, I've been thinking a
- 23:57Speaker 1: lot about this because I do see why there are
- 23:59Speaker 1: some people who are concerned about it. But I like it.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I think it's quite exciting. I like the idea of
- 24:04Speaker 1: siren cannot be ignored.
- 24:05Speaker 4: Me too.
- 24:06Speaker 1: Paid attention to. And I'll tell you what, sirens are
- 24:09Speaker 1: going to start getting people paying attention to them soon. Wow.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Drum roll. Yeah.
- 24:15Speaker 1: And Dodie Ann Ward is back.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Woo-hoo.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Wow.
- 24:22Speaker 1: And she had a cracker of a half season when
- 24:24Speaker 1: we saw her at the back end last year or
- 24:26Speaker 1: this year. I don't know. Is it last year? It's
- 24:29Speaker 1: last netball year. We've been through that before. But I
- 24:31Speaker 1: think that's really exciting for the Sirens, very exciting for
- 24:35Speaker 1: their future neighbours, of whom I'm going to be one,
- 24:38Speaker 1: I will remind you. So let's get on with that.
- 24:40Speaker 3: So three players signed up. So we've got two teams
- 24:44Speaker 3: with full quota of athletes and then three players for
- 24:47Speaker 3: the Sirens. They've got the least.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Well, by the time this goes to air, there may
- 24:52Speaker 1: be more than that because Emily from the Sirens organization
- 24:56Speaker 1: told me that they're letting Alexa Prino announce a couple
- 24:59Speaker 1: of names. I hope you're following your netball bestie on
- 25:03Speaker 1: Instagram and I don't know, wherever other young people gather.
- 25:09Speaker 3: We don't care. There's quite a lot of people.
- 25:11Speaker 2: There is.
- 25:11Speaker 1: There is. Let's all go to Myspace and see what's
- 25:15Speaker 1: happening in Sydney in 2017. But, yeah, that's exciting. So
- 25:19Speaker 1: we do have a very strong Jamaican contingent. And, look,
- 25:23Speaker 1: I'm not at all convinced that we're not going to
- 25:25Speaker 1: see Rubella Rake and George come back too. Like that is–
- 25:27Speaker 1: I think that.
- 25:28Speaker 3: She is– Nowhere for her to go.
- 25:31Speaker 1: She's eternal. There was nowhere for her to go last
- 25:33Speaker 1: year either, was there?
- 25:34Speaker 3: No, fucks. Yeah, that was an injury.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Things change. Now it was a pregnancy.
- 25:39Speaker 3: Same thing some would say.
- 25:44Speaker 1: Yeah, so that's very exciting. Is that our whole netball
- 25:48Speaker 1: segment for today?
- 25:50Speaker 4: Close to.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Oh, just having a quick look. I reckon we need
- 25:54Speaker 3: to chat who's making finals out of this.
- 25:57Speaker 4: Oh, do you know what? I'm not ready.
- 25:58Speaker 3: It's too hard to say.
- 25:59Speaker 4: And do you know what I need? I need to
- 26:02Speaker 4: be able to, like, I wonder if we can put
- 26:06Speaker 4: it into AI. Is AI advanced enough yet that you
- 26:08Speaker 4: can put these names in and get them to play
- 26:10Speaker 4: a quarter?
- 26:11Speaker 2: Wow.
- 26:12Speaker 4: Against each other?
- 26:12Speaker 3: Oh, I reckon you could.
- 26:16Speaker 1: You know what? You know I'm anti-AI, but actually this
- 26:20Speaker 1: is what we should be doing is training AI to
- 26:23Speaker 1: be netball savvy.
- 26:24Speaker 2: Yes.
- 26:24Speaker 3: If it doesn't know this, what we want.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Is people using it and training it to understand it. Yes.
- 26:31Speaker 3: Oh, fever for me.
- 26:32Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 26:33Speaker 3: They're in my grand final.
- 26:34Speaker 4: Oh, look at the line-up.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Ecanazio with Fowler Nemard and Beckford?
- 26:40Speaker 4: Come on. It's interesting though, right? You can put together
- 26:43Speaker 4: a lot of names, but like it has to work.
- 26:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Well, we've seen that, haven't we? Lightning got all the names.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Yeah, what are you thinking about Lightning? So they've got
- 26:52Speaker 1: a full team too. Again, they've got a team of some– Well, yeah, they.
- 26:57Speaker 3: Do and some youth in there as well. Ava Black,
- 27:02Speaker 3: Lisa Maimai, they're back as well. Anstis, good pick-up given
- 27:05Speaker 3: West Coast didn't want her. How good? Maggie Karras gone
- 27:08Speaker 3: there to boost that defence end and Bruce and Berger
- 27:11Speaker 3: still there. What about the front line though with Heffernan now,
- 27:14Speaker 3: Wilkinson and Wallum? That's versatile.
- 27:18Speaker 2: It is.
- 27:19Speaker 3: Me likey. Me likey.
- 27:21Speaker 1: Well, will we see a different top four than we
- 27:25Speaker 1: saw last year? Too early for us to make that call. Actually,
- 27:27Speaker 1: I do want to say something. You know, I was
- 27:29Speaker 1: saying on Wednesday how I had heard the rumours about
- 27:33Speaker 1: Ash Irvine from the beginning. Can I be clear? That
- 27:37Speaker 1: did not come from anyone official or related to Ash.
- 27:42Speaker 1: So that came from? complete randos, but it was early on.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Can I tell you of all the signings, that has
- 27:49Speaker 3: got to be one of my favorites because she's just
- 27:53Speaker 3: such a superstar that been sitting on the bench. I
- 27:55Speaker 3: don't think has had nearly enough court time for a
- 27:58Speaker 3: long time and deserves it. And I'm very excited to
- 28:00Speaker 3: see what she does with this opportunity.
- 28:02Speaker 4: Can I tell you that I know the least of
- 28:05Speaker 4: everyone in this signing period. I hear the least rumors.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Which is disappointing. You're telling me rumours.
- 28:11Speaker 1: I send you my rumours and you go, oh, that's interesting.
- 28:15Speaker 4: It's like, oh, yes.
- 28:16Speaker 3: Look at me.
- 28:17Speaker 4: And I try not to peddle in rumours because mainly
- 28:20Speaker 4: people might think that's because of my situation, but it's
- 28:22Speaker 4: actually because of my old person brain and I forget
- 28:24Speaker 4: what's rumours and what's true. So it's best I don't
- 28:26Speaker 4: say anything.
- 28:27Speaker 5: Yes.
- 28:28Speaker 4: And it's best I don't hear anything unless it's official.
- 28:30Speaker 1: I did think I was pretty hot stuff this morning
- 28:33Speaker 1: when you two arrived to do the recording and I
- 28:35Speaker 1: just was able to drop a couple of signings for
- 28:38Speaker 1: the sirens. Where did you hear that?
- 28:39Speaker 2: Oh.
- 28:40Speaker 1: From the sirens.
- 28:42Speaker 3: Directly. I can't, but this is the power of you though,
- 28:46Speaker 3: isn't it? I'm just going to annoy people via LinkedIn
- 28:50Speaker 3: of all places and see if I can get a
- 28:52Speaker 3: name drop.
- 28:53Speaker 1: It's about the one useful thing LinkedIn has ever done
- 28:55Speaker 1: for me and that is I got on and I
- 28:57Speaker 1: started to track people down at SCN and write to them.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Do you know that we have like the fastest growing
- 29:02Speaker 1: netball podcast? We're the only podcast. netball podcasts on the
- 29:05Speaker 1: Australian podcast, Derenka, which is the top 300 podcasts in Australia.
- 29:10Speaker 1: There's very few women's sport ones, let alone any other.
- 29:13Speaker 3: And just quietly, we're flying up that list too. Yeah, thanks, everybody.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Yeah, so thank you. So please do share this podcast.
- 29:21Speaker 1: Please give it a rating on Spotify or Apple. And
- 29:24Speaker 1: for those who were wondering where the episode went a
- 29:26Speaker 1: couple of weeks ago on Spotify, because we used Netflix,
- 29:30Speaker 1: A segment of a song, Spotify said we were in
- 29:33Speaker 1: breach of copyright, so they took it down and we
- 29:36Speaker 1: could have appealed it, but we're just going to change
- 29:37Speaker 1: it and put it back up anyway. but there's the
- 29:40Speaker 1: mystery so maybe we won't be hearing as much.
- 29:42Speaker 2: Oh no it's my favorite so when we have nickelback
- 29:47Speaker 2: flashbacks we don't get Guys.
- 29:50Speaker 1: But Alex wanted to run 30 seconds of Hanson. Maybe
- 29:55Speaker 1: not everyone loves it as much as you and I do.
- 29:57Speaker 1: Alex is, of course, our lovely producer. So sadly we
- 30:01Speaker 1: won't be hearing as much of Hanson on the podcast anymore.
- 30:04Speaker 4: Disappointing.
- 30:05Speaker 3: All those that have an issue with that, say aye.
- 30:10Speaker 4: Against, not carry.
- 30:11Speaker 1: All right, let's have a little break then and come back. And, Catherine,
- 30:14Speaker 1: you've got some stuff to get.
- 30:16Speaker 3: Off your chest. Let's do it. Oh, yeah, people.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Okay, Friday, nearly the weekend. What will Carolyn do? Will
- 30:35Speaker 1: there be another equestrian event? No, Fien, they've done that.
- 30:38Speaker 2: Dog show.
- 30:38Speaker 3: Dog show. What about a dog show? I would go
- 30:42Speaker 3: to a dog show with you. Let's find one. What's
- 30:45Speaker 3: the big one in England?
- 30:47Speaker 1: Is it Crufts? Or is it Crufts?
- 30:49Speaker 3: Or is it Roffs?
- 30:51Speaker 1: Is Westminster in the US and Crufts is in? Anyway,
- 30:55Speaker 1: but those are the two big dog shows.
- 30:57Speaker 2: Oh, yes.
- 30:57Speaker 3: Let's find a dog show.
- 30:59Speaker 1: There was a great movie called Best in Show.
- 31:01Speaker 4: It's a great movie.
- 31:02Speaker 1: And it stars Catherine O'Hara who, of course, was in
- 31:05Speaker 1: Schitt's Creek who passed away sadly not so long ago.
- 31:09Speaker 1: But it's from, you know, the whole crew who did
- 31:12Speaker 1: the Spinal Tap, Princess Bride crew. If you love any
- 31:17Speaker 1: of those, watch Best in Show. It is so funny.
- 31:21Speaker 1: And what is that woman's name? Stifler's Ma. Oh, yes.
- 31:25Speaker 3: Oh, yes.
- 31:25Speaker 1: Jennifer Coolidge.
- 31:26Speaker 3: Yes.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Hilarious.
- 31:28Speaker 4: So if you two go to a dog show, I
- 31:30Speaker 4: need a new dog. Do you reckon you could flog
- 31:32Speaker 4: one for me?
- 31:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 31:32Speaker 4: I mean, find a lost one.
- 31:34Speaker 3: We'll have to be little because I'm not running out
- 31:35Speaker 3: of there holding a St.
- 31:36Speaker 2: Bernard.
- 31:39Speaker 4: Go on, Catherine. Challenge yourself.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Teacup poodle I'll pop in my handbag.
- 31:42Speaker 4: No dramas. Imagine how long a teacup poodle would last
- 31:45Speaker 4: at my house.
- 31:45Speaker 3: Yeah, two seconds.
- 31:46Speaker 4: Yeah, it'd get lost.
- 31:47Speaker 3: And probably last that long in my handbag on the
- 31:49Speaker 3: way out.
- 31:50Speaker 1: You had to get a larger dog because of the fences,
- 31:52Speaker 1: didn't you?
- 31:53Speaker 4: Like that's a– I had to get a larger dog
- 31:55Speaker 4: that wouldn't run away. Anyhow, let's not go down that route.
- 31:59Speaker 4: It's too sad.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Well, let me change topic then.
- 32:01Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:02Speaker 3: Pet peeve.
- 32:03Speaker 4: Did you do that deliberately? Pet peeve?
- 32:06Speaker 2: Pet peeve.
- 32:06Speaker 3: Did you see that?
- 32:07Speaker 4: I want to know.
- 32:09Speaker 1: If you did see it.
- 32:10Speaker 3: No, you didn't.
- 32:12Speaker 4: She caught it as it came back and hit her
- 32:14Speaker 4: on the head on the way through.
- 32:15Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like a boomerang. No, so Jim this morning,
- 32:18Speaker 3: let me ask you a question.
- 32:19Speaker 4: Who's Jim?
- 32:21Speaker 3: Have you not met Jim?
- 32:21Speaker 1: He's fruits and leaves.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Oh, guys.
- 32:29Speaker 4: Oh, my God, I'm going to need one of those
- 32:31Speaker 4: poised pads at this rate.
- 32:32Speaker 2: I had a full muttly laugh happening here, didn't I?
- 32:44Speaker 3: Oh, I popped a rib.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Okay.
- 32:46Speaker 2: No, seriously. Yeah. All right.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Question for you both.
- 32:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 32:51Speaker 3: You go to the gym.
- 32:52Speaker 2: Yes.
- 32:53Speaker 3: There's a row of six treadmills.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Yep.
- 32:56Speaker 3: Yep. There's someone on either end.
- 32:58Speaker 2: Yep.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Which treadmill do you take?
- 33:01Speaker 4: So there's no such thing as the middle because there's
- 33:03Speaker 4: four left, right?
- 33:04Speaker 1: You go on three or four, right? Yes. One and
- 33:06Speaker 1: six are taken.
- 33:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:07Speaker 1: You go on either three or four.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Okay. Thank you.
- 33:10Speaker 3: Yes, you do.
- 33:10Speaker 4: I would go on three.
- 33:11Speaker 3: God, it drives me bananas where there is a three
- 33:14Speaker 3: and a four available and someone goes next to you.
- 33:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree.
- 33:19Speaker 2: Why?
- 33:20Speaker 4: I can't stop crying. But that's like this has been
- 33:26Speaker 4: missing from the podcast for a while. This is like
- 33:28Speaker 4: when you go caravanning and you go to a free
- 33:30Speaker 4: camp and you set up and there's all this space
- 33:33Speaker 4: and someone comes and sets up right next to you.
- 33:35Speaker 3: What do they?
- 33:36Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 33:37Speaker 1: On the beach too. Yes. Are you kidding?
- 33:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 33:40Speaker 3: I don't know who needs to hear it, but clearly
- 33:42Speaker 3: people do. This is a community service announcement. Don't do
- 33:47Speaker 3: it because then you start to breathe differently. Like I'm like,
- 33:50Speaker 3: I don't want to breathe like I was before because
- 33:53Speaker 3: now there's someone standing next to me. Then you're worrying
- 33:55Speaker 3: about if you stink. Like just give me a buffer.
- 33:58Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:59Speaker 4: But if someone takes three and someone takes four, then–
- 34:04Speaker 4: Two and five are available. Yes. And that's okay because
- 34:08Speaker 4: then if someone takes two or five, you're okay with that?
- 34:10Speaker 3: Completely fine at that point. But don't do it when
- 34:13Speaker 3: there's sparesies in the middle that give you a buffer.
- 34:16Speaker 1: It's weird.
- 34:17Speaker 3: It's so weird. I don't understand why people would do that.
- 34:21Speaker 2: No.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Are there people?
- 34:25Speaker 3: It happens to me a lot and every time they
- 34:27Speaker 3: get on, I look down the line and of treadies
- 34:31Speaker 3: just to make a point of, oh, well, there's one
- 34:33Speaker 3: over there. Do you do a lot of sight? I do.
- 34:37Speaker 3: I actually do, but then I will ultimately get off
- 34:39Speaker 3: and they win.
- 34:40Speaker 1: So you said you don't know who needs to hear it.
- 34:42Speaker 1: I'll tell you who needs to hear it. People at
- 34:44Speaker 1: the swimming pool who are swimming laps and they get
- 34:49Speaker 1: in the fast lane when they should be in the
- 34:51Speaker 1: slow lane or at very least the medium lane. So
- 34:55Speaker 1: I always start in the medium lane. I'm a pretty
- 34:59Speaker 1: good swimmer. I quite like it. I always start in
- 35:01Speaker 1: the medium lane because then you've got the slow on
- 35:03Speaker 1: your right, the fast on your left. You can keep
- 35:05Speaker 1: an eye and say, all right, I will adjust accordingly.
- 35:09Speaker 1: But if you go to one of the end ones,
- 35:11Speaker 1: it's sort of harder to see. But if you know
- 35:12Speaker 1: you're slow, you're slow.
- 35:14Speaker 3: But a lot of.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Men, Like to get in the fast lane. Oh, of
- 35:19Speaker 1: course they do. Because they think that that makes them
- 35:23Speaker 1: Ian Thorpe. Who's the American one?
- 35:26Speaker 4: Michael Phelps.
- 35:27Speaker 1: Michael Phelps. Just being in the fast lane is not
- 35:31Speaker 1: enough to make you an Olympic swimmer. You need to
- 35:34Speaker 1: do the swimming that keeps you at the pace there,
- 35:38Speaker 1: that short, middle-aged women aren't overtaking you and having to
- 35:43Speaker 1: be really strategic with their time at the end of
- 35:46Speaker 1: the pool. Because you think you're going to be fast
- 35:49Speaker 1: just by being fast.
- 35:50Speaker 3: The ego, right? Like you can't just get in the
- 35:53Speaker 3: middle lane.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:54Speaker 3: It's interesting, isn't it? It's fascinating.
- 35:56Speaker 4: I don't know what the psychology is, but you've just
- 35:58Speaker 4: reminded me. Did you say in the Good Weekend quiz
- 36:00Speaker 4: this weekend there was a question of what swimmer held
- 36:03Speaker 4: every world record from 100 to 1,500 metres? They're the
- 36:07Speaker 4: only swimmers who have ever done it.
- 36:09Speaker 3: One swimmer. One swimmer. All of them?
- 36:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:11Speaker 4: Do you know who it was?
- 36:12Speaker 3: Must have been in the million years ago.
- 36:16Speaker 2: Thorpey?
- 36:17Speaker 3: No, it's a woman. Is it our Aussie?
- 36:21Speaker 4: Not Dawn, but you're getting closer. Oh, hotter and colder.
- 36:24Speaker 4: You're getting warmer.
- 36:25Speaker 3: Shane Gould.
- 36:27Speaker 2: Yes.
- 36:27Speaker 4: Ding, ding, ding.
- 36:28Speaker 2: I know.
- 36:29Speaker 4: Isn't that amazing?
- 36:30Speaker 3: That is amazing.
- 36:31Speaker 4: Now, she would be the one person you'd put in
- 36:32Speaker 4: the fast lane swimming.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Oh, yeah.
- 36:34Speaker 1: Yeah. Look, I think if you've been to the Olympics
- 36:37Speaker 1: for swimming, even if it was 50 years ago, you
- 36:40Speaker 1: can start in the fast lane. If you've been an
- 36:42Speaker 1: Olympic swimmer, You can go and start there and then
- 36:46Speaker 1: you might need to adjust. For everyone else, including me,
- 36:51Speaker 1: that is not the place to start. That is start medium.
- 36:54Speaker 1: But then be willing to drop yourself down. Oh, yeah.
- 36:58Speaker 2: Sometimes like.
- 36:59Speaker 1: I could be going and I'm a medium lane swimmer
- 37:02Speaker 1: or even fast on other days, but the day that
- 37:04Speaker 1: I happen to be there is the reunion of the
- 37:07Speaker 1: Australian Dolphins swimming team and they go, hey, let's all
- 37:11Speaker 1: go and do some laps. Then I'm not going to
- 37:13Speaker 1: be fast.
- 37:14Speaker 4: No.
- 37:14Speaker 1: I'm going to be slow.
- 37:15Speaker 3: Isn't it funny, though, how people will actually go back
- 37:18Speaker 3: and do their sport for fun? Like I don't imagine
- 37:21Speaker 3: the dolphins are jumping in the pool to have a
- 37:22Speaker 3: little team bonding swim, but like ex-surfers would just have
- 37:26Speaker 3: a casual surf just because they love it. Golfers, we
- 37:30Speaker 3: wouldn't go and do that socially for fun as a
- 37:33Speaker 3: catch up though.
- 37:35Speaker 4: Not as a catch-up.
- 37:36Speaker 3: No, I would rather put my.
- 37:38Speaker 4: No, but I have started to think about maybe Masters
- 37:42Speaker 4: or something like that with our girl, with our mates.
- 37:45Speaker 4: If it was all our old Swifties team, I'd play it.
- 37:47Speaker 3: Have you?
- 37:48Speaker 4: Only because I, do you know what I realised playing?
- 37:51Speaker 4: I'm a bit pissed that I denied myself for 20 years.
- 37:55Speaker 4: Like I finished the World Cup and I'm like, that's it,
- 37:56Speaker 4: I'm done. I love every Saturday, even this last Saturday
- 37:59Speaker 4: when I got hurt, you finish with all the endorphins
- 38:02Speaker 4: and it's fun. Don't look at me like that.
- 38:05Speaker 1: But I presume.
- 38:06Speaker 3: No, well, now I'm wondering if I've missed out.
- 38:08Speaker 4: You probably have because it's fun. We love our sport.
- 38:11Speaker 4: Why aren't we playing it? Why haven't I played?
- 38:14Speaker 1: The Pan Pacific Masters Games, me managing a team. Oh,
- 38:19Speaker 1: my God.
- 38:20Speaker 3: You have to play. What do you mean managing it?
- 38:22Speaker 3: You'll be playing.
- 38:22Speaker 1: You mentioned your Swift's.
- 38:25Speaker 3: No, but I think you're in the inner circle these days.
- 38:28Speaker 1: Love it.
- 38:29Speaker 4: I mean, you get all the rumours before we do,
- 38:30Speaker 4: so we need you to be playing.
- 38:31Speaker 3: Look, we need someone to organise it.
- 38:33Speaker 4: LAUGHTER And it just needs to be– I might need
- 38:39Speaker 4: to do it after the World Cup. So there's a
- 38:40Speaker 4: bit on between now and the next 12 months. But
- 38:42Speaker 4: then after that, if I've still got all my ligaments happening,
- 38:45Speaker 4: even though I'll be in mid-50s by then, I just
- 38:48Speaker 4: forgot how much fun it was. But when I finished,
- 38:50Speaker 4: it was a joy. I mean, we weren't paid for it,
- 38:53Speaker 4: but it was so serious.
- 38:54Speaker 1: It would have to have taken you a number of
- 38:56Speaker 1: years to go and enjoy it because you would have
- 38:58Speaker 1: to reprogram– everything that you had known for 20 years
- 39:02Speaker 1: about netball.
- 39:03Speaker 3: But I also didn't– like my fear is people go, oh,
- 39:05Speaker 3: we'll show her. You know, like it's not– people just
- 39:08Speaker 3: coming at you and then also in your own head going, oh, God,
- 39:11Speaker 3: I'm so shit.
- 39:12Speaker 4: And it's a bit of like– well, I'm playing Div
- 39:15Speaker 4: 1 in Ballina, right, and I've been in that association
- 39:17Speaker 4: now for seven or eight years while I've been coaching.
- 39:19Speaker 4: So nobody has that, oh, we're going to get her
- 39:22Speaker 4: because everyone knows me and they know that I'm a Gumby.
- 39:24Speaker 4: They've seen me trip over the air as I walk
- 39:26Speaker 4: to the courts on a Saturday. So and everyone's just
- 39:30Speaker 4: really lovely about it, right? So, but I think if
- 39:34Speaker 4: we played socially and there might be the odd person,
- 39:37Speaker 4: but I actually think There wouldn't be that many people
- 39:40Speaker 4: who'd be wanting to.
- 39:41Speaker 3: And is it getting less and less frustrating for you too?
- 39:43Speaker 3: Because I'd imagine the first game back when you thought,
- 39:45Speaker 3: I can do this. Oh, shit, no, I can't.
- 39:48Speaker 4: Well, yeah. No, I'm just, I'm quite comfortable with the
- 39:50Speaker 4: fact that I can't get everything that I want to.
- 39:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Like that I see an intercept and I get, like
- 39:56Speaker 4: on the weekend, I took three steps towards it. And
- 39:58Speaker 4: I was like, oh, I missed that by a postcode, man.
- 40:01Speaker 4: So you just laugh.
- 40:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 40:03Speaker 4: Like it's funny.
- 40:03Speaker 1: And I had some white bladder leak.
- 40:05Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 40:09Speaker 4: Yeah, so I think it would be fun to play
- 40:11Speaker 4: together again.
- 40:12Speaker 3: Yeah, okay.
- 40:13Speaker 1: This is so exciting.
- 40:16Speaker 3: I'm scared already.
- 40:18Speaker 4: But it would have to be uber social. Like I'm
- 40:20Speaker 4: not doing anything competitive.
- 40:21Speaker 3: Me neither.
- 40:22Speaker 1: Do you think you could do walking netball?
- 40:25Speaker 2: No.
- 40:26Speaker 4: We're too competitive.
- 40:27Speaker 1: I think I'm and, you know, my competitiveness doesn't come from,
- 40:31Speaker 1: netball that comes through CrossFit, but I'm either on or
- 40:34Speaker 1: I'm off. I think walking netball requires a level of
- 40:39Speaker 1: control that I'm not sure that I would have. Now,
- 40:42Speaker 1: I've never tried it.
- 40:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't think I will, but because I know
- 40:45Speaker 4: I can still play social netball.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 40:48Speaker 4: But this season has taught me that I'm not what
- 40:50Speaker 4: I used to be and now I'm comfortable with that.
- 40:53Speaker 4: I reckon when I'm in my 60s, I'll be like, oh, yeah,
- 40:57Speaker 4: I'll play walking netball because you still get– Like it's
- 40:59Speaker 4: still fun. You're still doing something with your– like the
- 41:02Speaker 4: thing for me has been A, playing in all those endorphins,
- 41:04Speaker 4: but B, I have loved playing in a team with
- 41:07Speaker 4: my daughter and if I was playing with a group
- 41:08Speaker 4: of friends, I'd like to play with a group of friends.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Are you scared of being injured? Like do you go
- 41:12Speaker 3: full pelt?
- 41:13Speaker 4: Reasonably because that's and that's why i'm so i'm going
- 41:18Speaker 4: i've got a head injury and a back.
- 41:19Speaker 3: Injury no that would be my i would be not
- 41:21Speaker 3: going full pelt at all because i'd be scared.
- 41:23Speaker 4: Yeah no i don't do oh well no i probably
- 41:25Speaker 4: do i can't help myself but i like these things
- 41:27Speaker 4: that i don't do like i don't i play gold
- 41:29Speaker 4: defense on the weekend for a half that's a gas
- 41:32Speaker 4: oh man i'm 30 i'm 30 years older than the
- 41:34Speaker 4: woman i was playing against who was a bit too
- 41:36Speaker 4: fast for my liking um So, but no, I don't
- 41:41Speaker 4: think about it. I think if you go on thinking
- 41:42Speaker 4: about injury, you're going to get injured. I don't go
- 41:43Speaker 4: and think about injury. I warm up sometimes and I think.
- 41:47Speaker 3: Oh, you don't even warm up.
- 41:48Speaker 2: What?
- 41:49Speaker 4: I know I warm up.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Oh.
- 41:50Speaker 4: But sometimes I think, oh, this is, but I'm the
- 41:52Speaker 4: only one. Everyone laughs at me because I'm warming up
- 41:54Speaker 4: and everyone's just standing around having a chat. Because they're
- 41:56Speaker 4: all made of elastic.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:57Speaker 4: Because they're 12.
- 41:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:58Speaker 1: Literally. I reckon if Liz Watson warms up, everyone else
- 42:02Speaker 1: should warm up.
- 42:02Speaker 4: That's right.
- 42:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 42:04Speaker 2: True.
- 42:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 42:05Speaker 1: Well, well, that's exciting, isn't it? So, uh, I don't
- 42:08Speaker 1: know whether anything's going to happen about this because obviously
- 42:10Speaker 1: it requires me to organise it. But perhaps after the
- 42:13Speaker 1: Netball World Cup there might be a no-drip or netball
- 42:16Speaker 1: team and that would be super fun. I would love
- 42:20Speaker 1: that so much. Well, I think that's all we've got
- 42:23Speaker 1: time for. But what an amazing week we've had, Liz, in-house.
- 42:27Speaker 1: We've had exclusive announcements.
- 42:30Speaker 3: Exclusive.
- 42:31Speaker 1: The hottest time ever. We have had some great talks.
- 42:37Speaker 1: chat about light bladder leakage and other interesting items now
- 42:42Speaker 1: just a reminder our event is on sale go to
- 42:46Speaker 1: nodribble.com.au there's new merch on sale to the event in
- 42:50Speaker 1: sydney on the 24th of october when we're recording this
- 42:53Speaker 1: on monday we're 30 sold already and we do not
- 42:55Speaker 1: have a capacity to go large of any so if
- 42:57Speaker 1: you want to come come and join us that one's
- 42:59Speaker 1: shaping up to be a cracker And that's all the
- 43:04Speaker 1: admin that I think we had to deal with. But
- 43:06Speaker 1: thanks for joining us. Tell a friend about this podcast.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Let this cult take over the world. My name's Carolyn Swindell.
- 43:14Speaker 3: I'm Kath Cork.

- 43:31Speaker 4: Well, you started it. You'll have to finish it.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Why?

- 43:41Speaker 3: get her up there. Unbeknownst to her, she's in the
