- 0:04Speaker 1: and meat and drink and oil unto them of Zidon,
- 0:08Speaker 1: and to them of Tyre, to bring cedar trees from
- 0:11Speaker 1: Lebanon to the sea of Joppa, according to the grant
- 0:14Speaker 1: that they had of Cyprus king of Persia. Ezra 3.7
- 0:21Speaker 1: Father in heaven, at this moment I come to you
- 0:25Speaker 1: and ask you to do a diagnostic of my life.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Search me and search my heart so that any place
- 0:35Speaker 1: in me that has become hardened through disappointment and defeats
- 0:40Speaker 1: would turn back into flesh like the heart of the
- 0:43Speaker 1: Israelites in the books of Ezra and Haggai. When I
- 0:48Speaker 1: feel rejected from those who are building your church, give
- 0:52Speaker 1: me the proper perspective to know that I do belong
- 0:57Speaker 1: and that you've called all people from all nations, to
- 1:01Speaker 1: partake in your glorious blessings of forgiveness and newness. As
- 1:07Speaker 1: the longing for more of you in my life increases,
- 1:11Speaker 1: I will look in expectation to your word, for it
- 1:15Speaker 1: is in your word that you point me to the
- 1:17Speaker 1: greatest love and acceptance ever known, the love of Jesus. Therefore,
- 1:25Speaker 1: my heart will remain at rest. even when others push
- 1:29Speaker 1: me away. Because in you, Lord, I have full access
- 1:34Speaker 1: and acceptance. I belong in your temple. I have an
- 1:40Speaker 1: assignment to help build the house of the Lord, and
- 1:44Speaker 1: I belong to the body of Christ, which is your church.
- 1:50Speaker 1: In Jesus' name, amen. Thanks for making prayer a priority
- 1:56Speaker 1: in your life. To hear the Bible come to life,

- 2:13Speaker 2: The Exiles Return In our last story, Daniel was saved
- 2:18Speaker 2: from the jaws of ravenous lions. The Lord protected him.
- 2:23Speaker 2: This spoke to the king of the Medes, Darius. He
- 2:26Speaker 2: proclaimed the goodness of God and the Lord became famous
- 2:29Speaker 2: in the land. Now we fast forward over 50 years.
- 2:34Speaker 2: The Persians had complete control over Babylon. The Lord tugged
- 2:38Speaker 2: on the heart of the king and the exiles are
- 2:40Speaker 2: sent back home to rebuild their city and restore their culture.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Inspired by the books of Ezra, Haggai, Daniel, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel.
- 2:54Speaker 3: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in

- 3:20Speaker 3: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So

- 3:34Speaker 3: you for your support. In our latest episode, we heard
- 3:39Speaker 3: how God rescued Daniel from the lion's mouth. Daniel had
- 3:43Speaker 3: refused to hide his faith, his prayer, his worship of God,
- 3:47Speaker 3: or to bow to King Darius and was thrown into
- 3:50Speaker 3: the lion's den as punishment. As a regretful king, Darius
- 3:54Speaker 3: looked on, hoping Daniel's God would somehow save him. God
- 3:59Speaker 3: did indeed rescue Daniel, and Darius praised the Lord for
- 4:03Speaker 3: his greatness. Today's reading picks up more than 50 years
- 4:07Speaker 3: later after last episode's events. God moved in the heart
- 4:12Speaker 3: of the Persian king to allow his people to return
- 4:15Speaker 3: home and rebuild their city. God was now taking his
- 4:19Speaker 3: people out of their exile and restoring them. their rightful home.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Let's listen now to the reading of God's Word.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Dawn scattered across the Persian landscape. The air was filled
- 4:32Speaker 2: with the smell of new spring bloom. The budding sun
- 4:36Speaker 2: splattered colors across the sky, and King Cyrus of Persia
- 4:40Speaker 2: basked in its morning light. The king of Persia had
- 4:44Speaker 2: conquered all that was once Babylon. As a result, he
- 4:47Speaker 2: had been introduced to the ways of the Jewish exiles.
- 4:51Speaker 2: King Darius had told him of all that happened with
- 4:53Speaker 2: Daniel in the lion's den. He had heard tales of
- 4:56Speaker 2: the seas parting and the reign of King David. He
- 5:00Speaker 2: had a newfound love for the exiles. As he sat
- 5:03Speaker 2: on his rooftop basking in the glory of the new day,
- 5:06Speaker 2: the Lord tugged on the Persian king's heart. As Jeremiah
- 5:10Speaker 2: had prophesied years before, it was time for the people
- 5:13Speaker 2: of God to return home. So a decree was sent
- 5:16Speaker 2: across the land that the exiles were free to return
- 5:19Speaker 2: to Jerusalem and the surrounding region of Judah and Israel.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Not only were the people free to go, but they
- 5:26Speaker 2: were sent back with the sacred items King Nebuchadnezzar stole
- 5:29Speaker 2: from the temple. Among the people was a man named Zerubbabel.
- 5:34Speaker 2: He led the exiles back home and helped them settle in.
- 5:37Speaker 2: The land seemed strange. It had been over 70 years
- 5:41Speaker 2: since they were taken. Some people still remembered the great nation.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Others had been born and raised as exiles in Babylon.
- 5:49Speaker 2: Many homes were still broken, and the city of Jerusalem
- 5:52Speaker 2: seemed to be a ghost of its former glory. Zerubbabel
- 5:55Speaker 2: and his leaders walked the city streets filled with sorrow.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Dust and ash had collected on the old roads, and
- 6:02Speaker 2: they led up to the plot of ash and debris
- 6:04Speaker 2: where the great temple of God once stood. Two years
- 6:08Speaker 2: had passed, and the city of Jerusalem was beginning to
- 6:11Speaker 2: look as it once had. The old dust had been
- 6:14Speaker 2: wiped away, and new families were settling in and making
- 6:17Speaker 2: homes for themselves. Yet the temple still loomed over the
- 6:20Speaker 2: city like a giant grave. It depressed the people, especially Zerubbabel.
- 6:26Speaker 2: With the new resources that had been gained, Zerubbabel decided
- 6:30Speaker 2: it was time to restore the temple. It would be
- 6:32Speaker 2: no easy task, as it was almost completely destroyed during
- 6:36Speaker 2: the Babylonian siege. Every able-bodied man was put to work. Slowly,
- 6:42Speaker 2: the temple began to regain its former image. It still
- 6:45Speaker 2: had much to go, but the foundation itself was built
- 6:48Speaker 2: to last. Zerubbabel and his men rejoiced. The elders and
- 6:53Speaker 2: Levites of the city bowed with joyful tears. They praised
- 6:56Speaker 2: God for his faithfulness. He had promised to return them
- 7:00Speaker 2: to their home, and he did. Yet the elderly in
- 7:04Speaker 2: the city looked upon it and wept. Their tears were
- 7:07Speaker 2: drowned out by the noise of cheering, yet they could
- 7:09Speaker 2: not help but mourn over what the temple once was. Yes,
- 7:13Speaker 2: the building was restored. but the presence of God seemed
- 7:16Speaker 2: to be far still. They wept and nobody noticed, yet
- 7:20Speaker 2: their tears revealed a deep need still left unmet in
- 7:24Speaker 2: the heart of Israel. There were some in the land
- 7:27Speaker 2: of Judah who had remained when the nation was overtaken.
- 7:31Speaker 2: They grew up in the land, awaiting the return of
- 7:33Speaker 2: their kin. When the remnant heard that the temple was
- 7:36Speaker 2: being restored, they jumped in to help. We have been
- 7:40Speaker 2: worshipping the God of Israel all our lives, they shouted
- 7:43Speaker 2: with joy. Please let us aid you in the building
- 7:46Speaker 2: of the temple. Zerubbabel was a good leader, but ignorant
- 7:50Speaker 2: of the heart of God in many ways. He turned
- 7:53Speaker 2: the remnant away, saying, This work is for us, and
- 7:57Speaker 2: for us alone you shall have nothing to do with us.
- 8:00Speaker 2: The remnant was shocked and hurt at his words. Cast aside,
- 8:04Speaker 2: they steeped in bitterness towards the returned exiles. Zerubbabel made
- 8:08Speaker 2: a great error in turning them away. He had failed
- 8:12Speaker 2: to understand that the Lord desired that every nation should
- 8:15Speaker 2: be welcomed into the family of God, especially those who
- 8:18Speaker 2: share the name of Abraham. The people of the land
- 8:22Speaker 2: were discouraged and became enemies towards the exiles. They bribed counselors,
- 8:27Speaker 2: vandalized their building sites, and wrote accusations against them to
- 8:31Speaker 2: the king. They sowed lies and rumors that Israel planned
- 8:35Speaker 2: to rebel against Persia once it regained its strength. This
- 8:39Speaker 2: proved to be a great barrier to thriving as a nation.
- 8:43Speaker 2: So for a while, King Cyrus ordered for the rebuilding
- 8:46Speaker 2: project to cease until he was sure of their true
- 8:49Speaker 2: intentions and loyalties. Cyrus was a generous king, but no fool.
- 8:54Speaker 2: He would not give power to a nation that planned
- 8:56Speaker 2: to war against him. Before the temple was to be repaired,
- 9:00Speaker 2: the relationship with Persia must be repaired first. So King
- 9:04Speaker 2: Darius was able to broker peace between Persia and Israel. Ezra,
- 9:09Speaker 2: a scholar of the word of God and proclaimer of truth,
- 9:12Speaker 2: was appointed to teach the people the law of God.
- 9:15Speaker 2: As the temple was slowly restored, so the word of
- 9:18Speaker 2: God went forth among the people. The temple restoration was completed,
- 9:23Speaker 2: and it stood proud among the people of Judah and Benjamin.
- 9:27Speaker 2: They stood in awe of its majesty and awaited the
- 9:29Speaker 2: connection with God to be restored as well. Ezra knew
- 9:33Speaker 2: this would take time, He knew that the word of
- 9:36Speaker 2: the Lord had to dwell richly in the hearts of
- 9:38Speaker 2: men and women. It would be a task that would
- 9:41Speaker 2: take a lifetime. Slowly the culture of Israel and Judah
- 9:46Speaker 2: began to reform. Sacrifices were made in the temple and
- 9:49Speaker 2: God's law was proclaimed in the courts. Yet there was
- 9:53Speaker 2: something missing. There was a lingering emptiness that all in
- 9:56Speaker 2: the land felt. There was a longing for the presence
- 9:59Speaker 2: of God. Not just a rebuilding of the city streets.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Not just a rebuilding of the schools and teachings. No,
- 10:22Speaker 2: there needed to be a rebuilding of the heart. Their
- 10:25Speaker 2: hearts of stone needed to be replaced with hearts of flesh.
- 10:29Speaker 2: This would not come to pass until much later, until
- 10:33Speaker 2: the true presence of God dwelled in the city streets
- 10:36Speaker 2: of Jerusalem. One day the fullness of God would re-enter
- 10:40Speaker 2: the temple, but it would not be via sacrifices or incense.
- 10:45Speaker 2: It would be through the footsteps of the Messiah.
- 10:50Speaker 3: As we begin today's reading, there is a change in
- 10:53Speaker 3: the air. Persia had conquered all of Babylon. Their ruler,
- 10:57Speaker 3: King Cyrus, had become well acquainted with the Jewish people
- 11:00Speaker 3: and knew of what God had done through his servant
- 11:03Speaker 3: Daniel and others. His heart was soft and kind towards
- 11:07Speaker 3: the exiles, a sign that God was working in his
- 11:09Speaker 3: life to accomplish his sovereign purpose and will. After more
- 11:14Speaker 3: than 70 years away from their homelands, It was finally
- 11:17Speaker 3: time for the remnant of Israel to return home. Here again,
- 11:22Speaker 3: we see God's overarching will and purposes being accomplished, not
- 11:27Speaker 3: just through his chosen people, but also through rulers that
- 11:31Speaker 3: he had placed in positions of power to carry out
- 11:34Speaker 3: his plans. And so Cyrus issued a decree, releasing all
- 11:39Speaker 3: the exiles to return to Jerusalem and the regions of
- 11:42Speaker 3: Judah and Israel. It was just as God had spoken
- 11:47Speaker 3: through the prophet Jeremiah. These exiles were seeing the fulfillment
- 11:52Speaker 3: of God's promise to give his people a hope and
- 11:55Speaker 3: a future. That's one of the great verses of the
- 11:57Speaker 3: Bible in Jeremiah 29, 11. What's incredible is that Cyrus
- 12:04Speaker 3: didn't merely send the people away and wish them the best.
- 12:07Speaker 3: He allowed them to take back the sacred elements from
- 12:10Speaker 3: the temple, things carried off by Nebuchadnezzar so many years before.
- 12:14Speaker 3: So another sign of God's faithfulness and his hand of
- 12:18Speaker 3: provision we see in all of this. The returning Jews
- 12:22Speaker 3: were led by a man by the name of Zerubbabel.
- 12:26Speaker 3: But as joyous as this return was, it wasn't all easy.
- 12:30Speaker 3: There was so much work to be done. Years of wars, pillaging,
- 12:34Speaker 3: and neglect had left Judah and Israel in a sad state.
- 12:39Speaker 3: God's temple lay in ruins. So they set to work,
- 12:42Speaker 3: rebuilding what was lost. Of course, they weren't alone. There
- 12:46Speaker 3: were those who had stayed behind, kinfolks who were now strangers.
- 12:51Speaker 3: They were eager to help rebuild the temple and the city,
- 12:54Speaker 3: but Zerubbabel's heart harbored pride and bitterness. Rather than accept
- 12:58Speaker 3: the help and fellowship, he turned away from those still
- 13:01Speaker 3: in the land. His attitude, unfortunately, sowed division and animosity,
- 13:06Speaker 3: stunting the flourishing that God wanted for his people. This
- 13:10Speaker 3: is the reason we must be very careful. about creating
- 13:14Speaker 3: divisions and separations between us and others, especially in the
- 13:18Speaker 3: family of God. As Jesus prayed in John 17, we
- 13:23Speaker 3: should ask for unity and pray that God keeps us
- 13:26Speaker 3: together in the work that he's called us to do.
- 13:29Speaker 3: The seed of bitterness grew and undermined the process of
- 13:32Speaker 3: rebuilding to the point that King Cyrus halted any efforts
- 13:36Speaker 3: for fear of a revolt against his kingdom. King Darius
- 13:40Speaker 3: intervened on behalf of Israel and helped restore peace, and
- 13:43Speaker 3: efforts to restore the temple resumed. But all the restoration
- 13:48Speaker 3: would be for nothing if there was not a change
- 13:51Speaker 3: in the hearts of God's people. They needed to return
- 13:54Speaker 3: to God, to know God's law and obey it. And
- 13:58Speaker 3: so Ezra was sent to Jerusalem because as we read
- 14:01Speaker 3: in Ezra 7 verse 10, for Ezra had devoted himself
- 14:05Speaker 3: to the study and observance of the law of the
- 14:08Speaker 3: Lord and to teaching its decrees and laws in Israel.
- 14:12Speaker 3: It is so very important that God's people have a
- 14:15Speaker 3: man of God like Ezra who will teach and explain
- 14:18Speaker 3: his word and impart godly wisdom straight from the scripture.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Today's reading reminds us that we too must be careful
- 14:28Speaker 3: to hear, study, and obey God's word, for this is
- 14:32Speaker 3: the only path to flourishing, to an abundant life. Slowly
- 14:36Speaker 3: but surely, Israel and Judah began to return to a
- 14:39Speaker 3: place of devotion to God. Homes were rebuilt, including the
- 14:43Speaker 3: temple of God, God's house. But the land would never
- 14:47Speaker 3: return to its former glory as in the days of
- 14:50Speaker 3: David and Solomon. Yet a time was coming when God
- 14:53Speaker 3: would send someone far greater than his temple and his courts,
- 14:58Speaker 3: one greater than Solomon, God's very presence. Jesus would come
- 15:03Speaker 3: to the earth as the Messiah to fulfill all of
- 15:06Speaker 3: the promises of God, and God would now dwell in
- 15:10Speaker 3: the hearts of his people. In the Old Testament, God
- 15:13Speaker 3: had a temple for his people, but now in Christ,
- 15:17Speaker 3: God has a people for his temple. For you, we
- 15:21Speaker 3: are the temple of God because of what Christ has
- 15:24Speaker 3: done for us. Dear God, thank you for today's reading,
- 15:28Speaker 3: which reminds us that you are faithful to your promises,
- 15:32Speaker 3: always and forever. Thank you that we can live in
- 15:36Speaker 3: a house not made with hands, but a temple made
- 15:39Speaker 3: by your hands, the work of the Holy Spirit. We
- 15:42Speaker 3: pray that our lives would be a sanctuary of your presence,
- 15:46Speaker 3: that we would live flourishing and an abundant life, that
- 15:49Speaker 3: you may be glorified in all that we do, that
- 15:52Speaker 3: Jesus would be first, and that your kingdom would advance.
- 15:56Speaker 3: In Christ's name, amen. Thank you for listening to today's
- 16:01Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. And before we go, I
- 16:04Speaker 3: wanted to let you know that the Bible in a
