- 0:03Speaker 1: Let me ask you a question, So, how are you
- 0:06Speaker 1: surprised by these injuries in the spring? Like we used
- 0:10Speaker 1: to have everybody, we'd take about ten or fifteen people
- 0:13Speaker 1: and you got you got these five guys. You got
- 0:15Speaker 1: these five guys. You got these five guys, and you
- 0:17Speaker 1: would call them once a week or every ten days, go, hey,
- 0:20Speaker 1: how do you feeling what's going on? You know, our
- 0:23Speaker 1: ability to detect stuff is almost too good. You take
- 0:25Speaker 1: enough MRIs and enough pictures, you're gonna find something wrong
- 0:29Speaker 1: with everybody.
- 0:30Speaker 2: I think.
- 0:30Speaker 1: I'm not saying it's right or wrong, or guys were tougher,
- 0:32Speaker 1: but guys used to throw through a lot of things.
- 0:34Speaker 1: But I'm shocked with how many people get surprised by
- 0:38Speaker 1: someone being hurt in the spring when when they get there,
- 0:41Speaker 1: what were you doing in the off season?
- 0:44Speaker 3: You know, you tell me too much.
- 0:46Speaker 1: But the Mets traded their backup short stop before they
- 0:50Speaker 1: knew Lindor was gonna miss time. I mean, it's important
- 0:54Speaker 1: with the decision, the things you do in all season,
- 0:56Speaker 1: knowing the health of your people. I've talked to Keith
- 0:58Speaker 1: Meister about this. Hey, we take enough pictures, we're gonna
- 1:01Speaker 1: find something wrong with everybody, Okay, I'm done, So.
- 1:05Speaker 4: I mean we're gonna stay on that.
- 1:07Speaker 3: Fuck.
- 1:08Speaker 4: You need to be the one that changes this because
- 1:11Speaker 4: this is a billion dollar question.
- 1:15Speaker 3: This.
- 1:15Speaker 4: If teams can figure this out, who cares about draft
- 1:17Speaker 4: picks and qualifying offers and contracts?
- 1:20Speaker 3: You figure this out.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Should players come into spring training throwing one hundred miles
- 1:26Speaker 4: an hour in their first bullpen?
- 1:27Speaker 2: No, there's the progression. You know, you're trying to get
- 1:30Speaker 2: to the end game.
- 1:31Speaker 1: You know, I used to not watch guys throw, and
- 1:34Speaker 1: I wouldn't let a bunch of people stand around down
- 1:36Speaker 1: in the bullpen when they're throwing or batting practice. There's
- 1:40Speaker 1: fifty people with evaluation tools or whatever around the cage
- 1:45Speaker 1: watching them throw. Hey, you're not trying to make the team. Well,
- 1:47Speaker 1: then why are twenty people watching me throw? Get away
- 1:50Speaker 1: from them. Let let them have the progression to get
- 1:53Speaker 1: to the end game of the start of the season.
- 1:56Speaker 1: And you know, now these people are bringing thirty and
- 1:58Speaker 1: forty pitchers into camp.
- 2:00Speaker 2: How can you evaluate them?
- 2:01Speaker 1: And how can you I used to if you had
- 2:04Speaker 1: over sixty people in camp, you're going to have a
- 2:06Speaker 1: tough time evaluating players properly. You don't need more than
- 2:10Speaker 1: six catchers. You don't need more than twenty eight to
- 2:13Speaker 1: thirty pitchers. But now I look at the size of
- 2:17Speaker 1: these spring training rosters, there's no way you can evaluate
- 2:20Speaker 1: these people properly. Or Okay, you guys got me going, I'll.
- 2:24Speaker 5: Stop, no buck, I love this because here's my thing.
- 2:27Speaker 5: You asked what they're doing in the offseason. They're doing
- 2:30Speaker 5: too much. These kids. Most of these kids, since they're
- 2:33Speaker 5: ten years old, I'll say ten years old to twelve
- 2:35Speaker 5: years old, especially, pictures have been pictures only and all
- 2:39Speaker 5: they do is throw and throw and throw and try
- 2:41Speaker 5: to get their VL up so they get recruited or
- 2:43Speaker 5: so they get drafted, right, and then eventually you got
- 2:46Speaker 5: to pay the price for that.
- 2:47Speaker 3: And they never take time off. We just had, I forget.
- 2:50Speaker 5: We had on last week a picture and I said, hey,
- 2:52Speaker 5: you don't take any time off, and they're like, no,
- 2:54Speaker 5: I just keep going. I just keep throwing. I take
- 2:56Speaker 5: about a week off and keep throwing and keep throwing
- 2:58Speaker 5: and keep throwing. And then in the off season they
- 3:01Speaker 5: all go to drive line and they go to tread
- 3:04Speaker 5: and they go to all these places and they say, gosh,
- 3:06Speaker 5: I want to improve my stuff. Well, The only way
- 3:08Speaker 5: I can improve is if I throw one hundred miles
- 3:10Speaker 5: an hour every day in the in December, so they
- 3:14Speaker 5: never get their body of time to relax and recover,
- 3:18Speaker 5: and then all of a sudden they're like, oh wait,
- 3:20Speaker 5: on first day of camp, here's one hundred. I mean
- 3:22Speaker 5: you remember dude, Mark Burley would come in his first
- 3:25Speaker 5: bullpen would be about forty miles an hour, right, Brad Raky.
- 3:29Speaker 5: Literally we get out there and go, oh, I'm just
- 3:31Speaker 5: gonna feel it, right he They've been throwing, but they
- 3:34Speaker 5: were just like, you know, it's a different adrenaline, it's
- 3:35Speaker 5: different everything. I'm just gonna feel it and get and
- 3:38Speaker 5: then slowly build up. Now it's like first day we
- 3:41Speaker 5: have the iPad. Oh, let's see my vert and my horizontal,
- 3:44Speaker 5: all my this and that.
- 3:47Speaker 1: No iPads should be allowed around them throwing for the
- 3:49Speaker 1: first three or four balance.
- 3:51Speaker 2: You know, it's funny. I'm a big bio guy.
- 3:52Speaker 1: When I look at pictures, you know, young pictures that
- 3:55Speaker 1: we signed or whatever that are in camp. I love
- 3:59Speaker 1: when a guy has play three sports or two sports
- 4:01Speaker 1: and he hasn't pitched or played year round. You know,
- 4:05Speaker 1: the arm and the shoulder and the elbow. The time
- 4:07Speaker 1: off is precious. I pill guys get away from it,
- 4:09Speaker 1: don't pick up a baseball until whatever. And pitching coaches,
- 4:13Speaker 1: you know, the time off is so precious. But guys
- 4:15Speaker 1: that played baseball only year round, it was a big
- 4:18Speaker 1: red flag because we knew they were gonna.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Have some along the line. Now. I remember one.
- 4:23Speaker 1: Guy said, hey, what positions you played when you didn't pitch?
- 4:26Speaker 1: He goes, well, I didn't play another position. I go,
- 4:28Speaker 1: wait a minute, you didn't hit or play when you
- 4:30Speaker 1: didn't pitch in high school? Well no, really, that guy
- 4:35Speaker 1: lasted about two weeks.
- 4:38Speaker 2: All right.
- 4:38Speaker 4: We got the Warby Parkers. I got the Raiders, but
- 4:42Speaker 4: one thing that upgraded to polarized. Sorry about it.
- 4:47Speaker 6: Yeah, these are good not only for wearing, but also
- 4:49Speaker 6: out in the sun. When I become that baseball coach,
- 4:51Speaker 6: I always wanted to be with my kids. I got
- 4:53Speaker 6: the Hatchers. They're darker, a little bit wider for my face.
- 4:57Speaker 6: They fit perfect, They're comfortable. It's an easy process to
- 5:00Speaker 6: order these really really cool glasses.
- 5:02Speaker 7: I am a diehard Warby Parker fan. I do have
- 5:06Speaker 7: prescription glasses and I wear Warby Parker every day for
- 5:09Speaker 7: many years. I'm excited about this one. Give it a shot.

- 5:37Speaker 7: Territory sent you.
- 5:38Speaker 5: He tried to find something on me and he couldn't,
- 5:40Speaker 5: So that's a lie. When he told you you'll find everything,
- 5:42Speaker 5: he couldn't find anything on me, So you know him.
- 5:46Speaker 3: He was great.
- 5:47Speaker 1: Nobody knew what you want. Keith's great. If I had
- 5:50Speaker 1: to send some my thumb it go. But you know
- 5:53Speaker 1: the drill. They do the check swing drill, and you've
- 5:55Speaker 1: seen that one where they start the bad as fast
- 5:57Speaker 1: as they can. Then they slam the handle back into
- 5:59Speaker 1: the amate bomb area and you know they've got They've
- 6:03Speaker 1: taken so many reps. Now you know Eric, you know
- 6:06Speaker 1: this it's like you got a machine, you got a
- 6:09Speaker 1: short toss, you got teamwork, you got ten guys at
- 6:12Speaker 1: throw battye practice, and I don't know, it's just like
- 6:15Speaker 1: we're always trying to run everything down to empty. You know,
- 6:18Speaker 1: let's make sure your dad ever tried to see how
- 6:21Speaker 1: low he could get his that gas tank before he
- 6:23Speaker 1: put gas in it.
- 6:25Speaker 3: You know, Yeah, I still do that. Trick works. It works.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Sometimes your wife's crazy. That's your wife crazy.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Now, don't yeah, don't do that. My question is, fuck,
- 6:35Speaker 4: is baseball too much? Like well, everyone else is doing it,
- 6:39Speaker 4: so we have to do it? And do you think
- 6:42Speaker 4: you'll see in your lifetime an organization that says no,
- 6:45Speaker 4: that's fine, because I remember I remember back in I
- 6:48Speaker 4: forget maybe fifteen years ago. I'm not sure who it was.
- 6:51Speaker 4: If it was the rangers of somebody that Knowlan Ryan
- 6:53Speaker 4: was working with, and they were saying, Hey, we're gonna
- 6:55Speaker 4: have these guys actually throw longer in games. We're going
- 6:58Speaker 4: to have them do different things. Is that the rest
- 7:00Speaker 4: of the industry is not doing or are we all
- 7:03Speaker 4: just sheep and just doing the exact same thing and
- 7:07Speaker 4: afraid of looking outside of the box to create a healthier,
- 7:13Speaker 4: better product for one organization.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Well, they copy each other. They think someone's getting ahead.
- 7:19Speaker 1: And you know, I looked at a staff the other day.
- 7:21Speaker 1: I just out of curiosity, I said, see if I
- 7:23Speaker 1: know about this coaches that they had fourteen people on
- 7:26Speaker 1: the coaching staff. That's like an NFL team that plays
- 7:29Speaker 1: sixteen or seventeen games. Fourteen Trish, you think Indiana has
- 7:33Speaker 1: fourteen coaches on their football team. Maybe, but I just yeah,
- 7:39Speaker 1: You've got so many people tripping over themselves to matter.
- 7:42Speaker 1: We're all chasing titles. Hey, I'm a director of left
- 7:45Speaker 1: handed sliders in the dirt.
- 7:47Speaker 2: You know. Hey, I'm the director. I'm the I don't
- 7:50Speaker 2: know a coordinator.
- 7:51Speaker 1: It's like I was talking to an ex manager the
- 7:53Speaker 1: other day, you know, the field coordinator for the team, Well,
- 7:56Speaker 1: the field coordinator. Someone asked me about helping a spring
- 8:00Speaker 1: train and run spring train. I said, hey, if your
- 8:02Speaker 1: manager can't run spring training, you might have the wrong manager.
- 8:06Speaker 2: And I don't know.
- 8:07Speaker 1: We've we've got so many people trying to build a
- 8:10Speaker 1: niche that and there's a lot of copycat that goes on,
- 8:13Speaker 1: Wait a minute, they're doing that, let's let's go. It's
- 8:15Speaker 1: like a charm Bracelet let me get my charm You know,
- 8:18Speaker 1: I remember when Itchiro and Montsouey came out and I
- 8:22Speaker 1: had been over Japan. I said, hey, these two guys
- 8:24Speaker 1: stick out like short thumbs. The drop off from them
- 8:27Speaker 1: to the next offensive player is huge. But everybody tried
- 8:30Speaker 1: to go get their charm brace. But hey, I've got
- 8:32Speaker 1: a player from Japan. Well wait a minute, you don't
- 8:35Speaker 1: have Montsoue, you don't have Itchi row You know that
- 8:37Speaker 1: each person's different, and it's like charm brace's, Hey I've
- 8:41Speaker 1: got my this. Hey I've got my this. That team
- 8:44Speaker 1: has this, and we got to get one of these
- 8:45Speaker 1: and get one of this. I just wondered at some
- 8:47Speaker 1: point if an owner is going to go, what are
- 8:49Speaker 1: we getting for this? You know, we're just in the
- 8:52Speaker 1: last place again, what are we What advantage are we
- 8:55Speaker 1: gaining by having this? Because you know, you can you
- 8:58Speaker 1: can really confuse players with too many voices, and I
- 9:02Speaker 1: think you're careful about that.
- 9:05Speaker 3: I agree Buck.
- 9:05Speaker 5: By the way, since Indiana has the National Football Trophy,
- 9:09Speaker 5: they apparently can't afford good Wi Fi. So Tricia, we
- 9:12Speaker 5: lost Tricia for a second. You know, Mark Cuban and
- 9:14Speaker 5: her Big or Big Tricia and Sydney podcast where they
- 9:18Speaker 5: had Mark Cuban. Maybe she could ask Mark for a
- 9:20Speaker 5: little loan to get better Wi Fi.
- 9:23Speaker 8: I'll send this to filhim afterwards from AJ how about that.
- 9:26Speaker 8: I'll tell me Mark Cuban buy me a better WiFi.
- 9:28Speaker 8: I'm sure he will. Well, you know, not to bring
- 9:32Speaker 8: up AU football again. I lost you guys for like
- 9:34Speaker 8: a whole minute there, but you were talking about how
- 9:37Speaker 8: a time off is really necessary and taking a break
- 9:40Speaker 8: is necessary. You want to know what IU football head
- 9:43Speaker 8: coach is Kurt Signetti. His theory and his philosophy on
- 9:47Speaker 8: practice is high efficiency, short duration practices, ninety minutes on
- 9:51Speaker 8: the field, and he doesn't like long grueling sessions because
- 9:55Speaker 8: he wants to keep players fresh and healthy.
- 9:59Speaker 3: That's his approach.
- 10:00Speaker 5: That's because they're all thirty years old, Tricia. They got
- 10:02Speaker 5: they need to get in there to go see their
- 10:04Speaker 5: grand they are.
- 10:06Speaker 8: You don't need to do your research, sir, they are
- 10:09Speaker 8: not thirty years good.
- 10:12Speaker 1: It's the same way with spring training. You know, you
- 10:14Speaker 1: got thirty year old guys that you have to entertain.
- 10:16Speaker 1: We never did a drill more than ten to twelve minutes.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Their attention span. And you know I used to tell
- 10:22Speaker 1: we're not going to do things till we get them right.
- 10:24Speaker 1: We're going to do them till we can't do them wrong.
- 10:26Speaker 1: And we would get on and off the field and
- 10:29Speaker 1: do things. And efficiency is what you're looking for and
- 10:32Speaker 1: purpose of what you're doing, and you know every everything
- 10:37Speaker 1: you do, it's like rehearsing a Broadway play down in
- 10:40Speaker 1: spring training, because when the curtain goes up in the spring,
- 10:43Speaker 1: it always kills me. How a rundown happens in game
- 10:46Speaker 1: one and nobody knows how to run it, or a
- 10:48Speaker 1: relay is messed up. I go, what were you doing
- 10:50Speaker 1: in spring training? You know that's what that was for,
- 10:53Speaker 1: rehearsing your lines for this Broadway play? And what do
- 10:56Speaker 1: we do if it gets off the tracks?
- 10:58Speaker 2: How do we handle it?
- 11:02Speaker 8: I would all I would like to clarify something a
- 11:05Speaker 8: j SID the IU football team. Let me tell you
- 11:08Speaker 8: the average age. Yes, they are older. The average age
- 11:11Speaker 8: is around twenty three years old. Forty seven guys aged
- 11:15Speaker 8: twenty two to twenty five.
- 11:18Speaker 5: I had all forty seven of them started. They were
- 11:21Speaker 5: older I think than the Tennessee Titans who were in
- 11:22Speaker 5: the NFL. So or there was within a year, So
- 11:25Speaker 5: I mean, I don't know, Tricia.
- 11:27Speaker 3: He's so good about that.
- 11:29Speaker 8: I take when I show you.
- 11:31Speaker 5: Guys have that national championship though, that you paid for
- 11:34Speaker 5: and all that.
- 11:34Speaker 3: Fine.
- 11:37Speaker 1: Jealousy is a horrible emotion, so don't don't feel bad
- 11:40Speaker 1: about it.
- 11:40Speaker 2: They're just jealous.
- 11:41Speaker 3: Okay, basketball school book, Florida's a basket, Dia.
- 11:45Speaker 2: Hey did you guys? Did you guys ever play on
- 11:48Speaker 2: a team that had a captain?
- 11:50Speaker 3: That's what I was going to ask you about. We
- 11:51Speaker 3: were just going to ask you about that. I did.
- 11:54Speaker 5: Paul can Erica. His name happened so we could resign
- 11:56Speaker 5: him in two thousand and six. After we won in
- 11:58Speaker 5: two thousand and five, Ozzie's like, he's our captain, but
- 12:00Speaker 5: he never wore a C, and I used to make
- 12:02Speaker 5: fun of him. I'm like, you're the captain, how come
- 12:04Speaker 5: you don't wear a sea Because he got the C
- 12:06Speaker 5: that I could get the A for asshole, right.
- 12:08Speaker 3: You know in hockey they have the C in the A,
- 12:10Speaker 3: so I could have gone.
- 12:12Speaker 2: Instead of assistant captain. It just shortened to.
- 12:14Speaker 5: Ask right, yes, exactly exactly, So that's yes, I did
- 12:18Speaker 5: play on one. But the fact that Stevie Cohen came
- 12:20Speaker 5: out and said, Oh, the Mets, don't we I don't
- 12:22Speaker 5: believe in this.
- 12:23Speaker 3: You think Lindor's hurt by that?
- 12:27Speaker 2: Probably down deep, I know that he would, you know,
- 12:29Speaker 2: wanting to.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Take on that that and all that entails is uh,
- 12:34Speaker 1: there's a lot to ask of players nowadays. You know
- 12:37Speaker 1: the dynamics of a locker room. You know, the people
- 12:40Speaker 1: in it realize how it works, and it takes a
- 12:42Speaker 1: special person to take on that responsibility of being that
- 12:46Speaker 1: And you know, I've had I had Maddingly there and
- 12:49Speaker 1: Jeter after him. Matt Williams was kind of our captain
- 12:53Speaker 1: out in Arizona. But if you've got to put a
- 12:55Speaker 1: C on somebody's jersey, I think you might. You know,
- 12:59Speaker 1: everybody knows who that guy is. You have any doubt
- 13:03Speaker 1: the two people over in Philadelphia who's running that ship?
- 13:06Speaker 2: You know?
- 13:07Speaker 1: And that's I think one of the best signings of
- 13:09Speaker 1: the all season was the catcher in Philadelphia and of
- 13:12Speaker 1: course Schwarber there. And you know, when you think about
- 13:17Speaker 1: people that you can trust to do things because their
- 13:20Speaker 1: voice once you do that and make that commitment. But
- 13:24Speaker 1: I'm not sure a lot of owners really understand the
- 13:26Speaker 1: dynamics of how locker room works in baseball where you
- 13:29Speaker 1: play one hundred almost two hundred games counting screen train.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Fuck.
- 13:35Speaker 5: Yeah, they don't take the coin toss. They don't go
- 13:37Speaker 5: out there in midfield and take the coin toss. I mean,
- 13:40Speaker 5: I get it. It's a symbolic thing, right, I get it.
- 13:45Speaker 5: But like other than just being like, hey, you're the
- 13:47Speaker 5: captain because you've been here a long time, Like, what
- 13:50Speaker 5: is the captain really do in baseball?
- 13:52Speaker 1: Well, if we play a double header and I get
- 13:54Speaker 1: thrown out of the first game, the captain takes a
- 13:56Speaker 1: lineup party out the second game.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Okay, not your bench.
- 14:04Speaker 1: He's mad too, he went with me. If he's a
- 14:06Speaker 1: bench coach, he probably left the building too.
- 14:10Speaker 8: Wait, but you were talking about a voice. Their voice
- 14:12Speaker 8: matters in the clubhouse when they're the captain. What can
- 14:16Speaker 8: you kind of explain maybe the benefit of having that voice.
- 14:19Speaker 6: To people who might not understand, you know, I.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Think I think it's somebody that players so comfortable bouncing
- 14:25Speaker 1: something off of and trusting them, and the coaches in
- 14:30Speaker 1: the front office trust that guy to say the right
- 14:32Speaker 1: thing and not be a sympathetic year. One of the
- 14:35Speaker 1: things you have to do when you go into the
- 14:36Speaker 1: new situation and struggle is you got to eliminate the
- 14:38Speaker 1: sympathetic years to bs. If you get to the point
- 14:41Speaker 1: where people go to this guy, hey, uh, you know
- 14:44Speaker 1: there's they're screwing me here. Oh wait a minute, he
- 14:46Speaker 1: don't want to hear. All right, let me go over here.
- 14:48Speaker 1: Oh wait a minute, he don't want to hear what wait?
- 14:50Speaker 1: Maybe I just got to play better. I used to
- 14:52Speaker 1: erase all those signs that said, you know, some patent
- 14:55Speaker 1: line or Churchill line, all these things written on the wall.
- 14:58Speaker 1: They never made a player better. I just put one
- 15:00Speaker 1: thing up there said play better, Play better. You know,
- 15:03Speaker 1: nobody wants to hear it. People working nine to five,
- 15:05Speaker 1: five days a week and staying up late at night
- 15:07Speaker 1: when you're on the West Coast and watching team. They
- 15:09Speaker 1: don't want to hear how your chartered plane was late
- 15:12Speaker 1: or your five star hotel made too much noise. Just
- 15:15Speaker 1: play better, shut up and post up. Okay, I'm done again.
- 15:18Speaker 1: I had too much coffee.
- 15:20Speaker 2: I love it buck though.
- 15:22Speaker 8: I remember I used to listen to some things like
- 15:24Speaker 8: that when players would say things like, yeah, you know,
- 15:26Speaker 8: the car ride to spring training really messed up my legs,
- 15:29Speaker 8: and it's just like, I get it, but do you
- 15:31Speaker 8: think the nine to five worker wants to hear that.
- 15:34Speaker 8: I'm not saying some of the complaints aren't legitimate, But
- 15:36Speaker 8: sometimes when I hear players be like, oh those hotel
- 15:39Speaker 8: beds at this five star hotel really messed up my neck,
- 15:41Speaker 8: I'm like, you have a massage therapist at the field,
- 15:45Speaker 8: you have a trainer, you have all of these things
- 15:47Speaker 8: at your disposal, and that's why you say you're not hitting.
- 15:50Speaker 8: It's confusing to me.
- 15:51Speaker 2: I don't know, you know, I love this question.
- 15:55Speaker 1: Communication is communication saying what you want to hear or
- 15:58Speaker 1: what you need to hear.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Big difference.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Max Schurzer used to come in and PLoP down and
- 16:04Speaker 1: we talk about life and everything. Max like bluntness. I
- 16:08Speaker 1: love Max's bluntless with me and me back at it,
- 16:11Speaker 1: and he loved it. He didn't want anything sugarcoated. And
- 16:15Speaker 1: you're looking for those type of players. I just hope
- 16:18Speaker 1: we don't have a lockout at the end of this thing.
- 16:20Speaker 2: I don't like what I'm hearing.
- 16:22Speaker 4: Two situations a team. He brought up about having possibly
- 16:25Speaker 4: two captains in the Phillies' locker room. They've had the
- 16:29Speaker 4: Castiano's situation and now they have the most recent information
- 16:34Speaker 4: about Bryce Harper saying, you know, we thought it was
- 16:38Speaker 4: kind of wild. How is a manager, when you're general
- 16:41Speaker 4: manager or president of baseball operations, makes comments like that
- 16:46Speaker 4: about one of your superstars on the team. What's your
- 16:51Speaker 4: view and what's your next step?
- 16:53Speaker 1: For both those situations, Well, you do talk to the
- 16:57Speaker 1: player and just say, hey, what do you feeling?
- 16:59Speaker 2: What are you thinking?
- 17:00Speaker 1: And sometimes both parties are right, you know, whether you
- 17:03Speaker 1: air it publicly or it's out there. You know, I
- 17:05Speaker 1: would think that Dave had a purpose to everything he does.
- 17:08Speaker 1: I knew in the whole Castalanas thing that there was
- 17:11Speaker 1: going to be support of the manager there in between Matt,
- 17:14Speaker 1: Donnie Maddingly, he's president Mattingly and and Dave. They're not
- 17:19Speaker 1: going to put up with stuff like that, and they're
- 17:21Speaker 1: going to support their player. And there's two sides to
- 17:23Speaker 1: every story, there really is. You know, there's no expression.
- 17:26Speaker 1: One of the worst things for a managers you never
- 17:28Speaker 1: let a star fall on you. There's nothing worse than
- 17:31Speaker 1: managing a guy that did great things for you, but
- 17:34Speaker 1: he's I'm not saying Castlana's skills are going down. I'm
- 17:37Speaker 1: just saying there's some things that you know, playing defense
- 17:40Speaker 1: for a superstar late and again or a star player,
- 17:43Speaker 1: and it's uncomfortable, but you've got to do what's best
- 17:46Speaker 1: for the team.
- 17:47Speaker 2: And uh, that's uncomfortable for a locker room.
- 17:51Speaker 1: And no one will say it publicly, but you know,
- 17:53Speaker 1: I think they're glad that the not the problem, but
- 17:56Speaker 1: just the issue is not there anymore. Now he's a
- 17:59Speaker 1: good player and they're going to have to replace him
- 18:00Speaker 1: with some things. But you know, I know Robbie well,
- 18:04Speaker 1: and uh, he's not looking for a problem. All he's
- 18:07Speaker 1: looking for is given the Phillies the best chance to
- 18:09Speaker 1: win a game.
- 18:11Speaker 3: Fuck, has a player ever had a beer under your tutelage?
- 18:15Speaker 3: After had?
- 18:16Speaker 2: I just went there were a few games I wish
- 18:18Speaker 2: I could have a sip of it.
- 18:19Speaker 3: I can tell you that that's fair.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Hey, my first game is the manager against the Boston
- 18:27Speaker 1: Red Sox opening day Cleate Warrior. You ever seen a
- 18:30Speaker 1: picky youwn cigarette? It's a really strong cigarette. It's not marijuana,
- 18:34Speaker 1: but it's And he could tell I was a little
- 18:37Speaker 1: nervous in ninth inning trying to close out the game,
- 18:39Speaker 1: not that I remember. Steve Fark Jody Reid was a hitter,
- 18:43Speaker 1: and Cleek asked me, if I want to take a
- 18:47Speaker 1: drag off his cigarette and then tell you what, I
- 18:50Speaker 1: don't even remember the last inning. I don't.
- 18:53Speaker 5: Well, that's good. There's a lot of games I don't
- 18:56Speaker 5: wish I didn't remember. Buck So you're one up on
- 18:58Speaker 5: a lot of guys.
- 18:59Speaker 2: You did you, Hey, let me tell you.
- 19:01Speaker 1: You go in the locker rooms and there's some empty
- 19:03Speaker 1: beer cans in there, and you go, now, years ago
- 19:08Speaker 1: when guys would try to get that edge, so to speak, and.
- 19:12Speaker 5: They took greenies. They took greenies, and beer kicked him back.
- 19:15Speaker 5: And we've talked about a bucket's fine, you can say it.
- 19:17Speaker 5: Everyone does, got a big deal.
- 19:19Speaker 1: That's when I first knew. I went, wow, there's empty
- 19:23Speaker 1: beer cans in here, are half empty.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Mm hmm. All right.
- 19:26Speaker 5: So now you hit the Yankees, and so let me
- 19:29Speaker 5: ask you the question. When you were playing for George
- 19:31Speaker 5: George Steinbrenner, would he have ever after not winning a
- 19:35Speaker 5: World Series, brought back essentially the same team as the
- 19:39Speaker 5: Yankees are doing this year. Now I know they get
- 19:41Speaker 5: Garrett Cole at some point this year. But would he
- 19:44Speaker 5: have ever done that, or would if he have said
- 19:47Speaker 5: I need to change something, we need to miss mix
- 19:50Speaker 5: this up and get a better team.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Of course he would have, you know he you know,
- 19:55Speaker 1: you knew the job description as a manager. You know,
- 19:57Speaker 1: That's why I never complained about it. I knew, you know,
- 20:00Speaker 1: I was there nineteen years. I've seen a lot of
- 20:02Speaker 1: people come and go. But it doesn't mean make him right,
- 20:06Speaker 1: and it doesn't mean Cashman's wrong. I mean the healthier
- 20:11Speaker 1: if one. You know, if you ask every manager, what's
- 20:12Speaker 1: the one thing you'd like to have when the season started,
- 20:15Speaker 1: is the healthier players, you know, staying healthy? And you're
- 20:18Speaker 1: what ips, that's what all seasons are for. Okay, what
- 20:21Speaker 1: if you know Derek Jeter couldn't play, or what if
- 20:24Speaker 1: Lindor got hurt? You know, that's your job as a
- 20:27Speaker 1: GM and a manager is to attack the what ifs.
- 20:31Speaker 1: And because it's not a normal thing to do your
- 20:33Speaker 1: body to play seven days a week for seven or
- 20:36Speaker 1: eight months. The last time you were one hundred percent
- 20:38Speaker 1: was the day you got out of the car in
- 20:40Speaker 1: spring training. And evidently some of them were one hundred
- 20:42Speaker 1: percent this room. That's for sure, Peace, I can't believe
- 20:46Speaker 1: the teams that are surprised by injuries that, you know,
- 20:50Speaker 1: just all of a sudden appear in spring training. You know,
- 20:55Speaker 1: I need to prepare for that, George,
