Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Hi, Hello, welcome to Cardinal Territory. You are watching this
- 0:08Speaker 1: on Friday, April twenty fifth, which means we are about
- 0:11Speaker 1: to start a short but sweet three game homestand with
- 0:13Speaker 1: the Milwaukee Brewers. So I thought, why not ask my
- 0:16Speaker 1: friend Don Petronio, who does pre and post game for
- 0:19Speaker 1: the Brewers on WTJ, to come join the show. No
- 0:22Speaker 1: one else I'd rather talk ball with, especially some Brewers
- 0:24Speaker 1: Cardinals Dom How are you?
- 0:26Speaker 2: Hey? What's up Katie? Happy to have you here.
- 0:28Speaker 3: This is fun because finally we get to see each
- 0:31Speaker 3: other for the first time this series, this season, and
- 0:33Speaker 3: then it's like we barely see each other again until
- 0:35Speaker 3: the middle of summer.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Right exactly. I love this for us. I see you
- 0:39Speaker 1: three times a year, but all three times it's great.
- 0:41Speaker 2: So why not this is great?
- 0:44Speaker 1: No?
- 0:44Speaker 3: I think two teams in very different trajectories. Right, You
- 0:48Speaker 3: can correct me if I'm wrong on that. The Brewers
- 0:50Speaker 3: are still trying to get out of neutral right now,
- 0:52Speaker 3: it feels like, but as we record this before their
- 0:55Speaker 3: finale with the Giants, they're really begging for a.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Split against the tough team in San Francis Go.
- 1:00Speaker 3: But there's still a team that people want to continue
- 1:03Speaker 3: to not really pay attention to.
- 1:05Speaker 2: And that say, Okay, it's exactly how they like it. Yeah.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I feel like every year the Brewers come in and
- 1:10Speaker 1: they're just kind of thought as the underdog, despite having
- 1:12Speaker 1: won the division four or three times in the last
- 1:14Speaker 1: four years. And I don't know if that is just
- 1:17Speaker 1: part of being in the now Central, part of not
- 1:19Speaker 1: being a big market team, part of not really spending,
- 1:22Speaker 1: But every year they seem to sort of get it going,
- 1:23Speaker 1: which is why I was a little surprised to check
- 1:25Speaker 1: the standings and see them hovering right around five hundred.
- 1:28Speaker 1: But as you and I were talking about before the
- 1:29Speaker 1: cameras went on, the Brewers have been in the midst
- 1:31Speaker 1: of a grueling stretch to start April.
- 1:34Speaker 3: This is the second West Coast trip they're just finishing.
- 1:37Speaker 3: This is their only three city road trip of the year, though,
- 1:40Speaker 3: which is good news for any team in the Antal
- 1:42Speaker 3: Central given how great the travel is in this division.
- 1:45Speaker 3: But when you think of two trips West on top
- 1:48Speaker 3: of opening the season in New York and then coming
- 1:50Speaker 3: right back home, I mean they've had sneaky a lot
- 1:53Speaker 3: of day games and a lot of travel already to
- 1:55Speaker 3: this point of the year.
- 1:56Speaker 2: They're getting a lot of it done now. The good
- 1:58Speaker 2: news for the Brewers is that after they're.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Done with the Giants now, they don't go west again
- 2:02Speaker 3: until after the All Star breaks, so they get to
- 2:04Speaker 3: kind of get comfortable in the Central and Eastern time zones.
- 2:08Speaker 3: And that may not sound like a thing to some people,
- 2:11Speaker 3: but when you're traveling and you're putting your body on
- 2:13Speaker 3: the line and that big jump, that two and a
- 2:16Speaker 3: half hour jump or whatever, I just I give my
- 2:20Speaker 3: kudos to these guys and what they're going through. At
- 2:22Speaker 3: the same time, it's only April. There's no reason to overreact.
- 2:25Speaker 3: You want to make sure these bodies are fresh by
- 2:26Speaker 3: the end of the year as opposed to the end
- 2:28Speaker 3: of April. That's what the Bruce have kind of been
- 2:30Speaker 3: doing with their line of the last few games, got it, No.
- 2:32Speaker 1: I saw a couple of show and goes from your
- 2:35Speaker 1: manager Pat Murphy, so that and it helps. Right. They
- 2:38Speaker 1: burst out for eleven runs. I believe a Christian Yelich
- 2:40Speaker 1: grand Slam. So good to see the Brewers maybe kind
- 2:44Speaker 1: of sputtering out of this. The Cardinals are in their
- 2:46Speaker 1: own little rut. It's not nearly it's much worse than
- 2:50Speaker 1: where the Brewers are right now. But each time that
- 2:52Speaker 1: these two teams play, I think it brings out for
- 2:54Speaker 1: some really compelling competitive baseball. When you're watching the Milwaukee
- 2:58Speaker 1: Brewers as we are almost one month into the regular season,
- 3:01Speaker 1: which seems crazy, what part of their game sticks out
- 3:05Speaker 1: to you that you think is a legitimate threat for
- 3:08Speaker 1: the Brewers.
- 3:08Speaker 3: The biggest threat is their back to ball. They don't
- 3:12Speaker 3: necessarily hit for power per se. But you look at
- 3:16Speaker 3: some of these wins for the Brewers and you're consistently
- 3:19Speaker 3: seeing five six strikeouts and then four or five walks,
- 3:24Speaker 3: Like their awareness of the strike zone is one of
- 3:26Speaker 3: their biggest strengths, because that's how they've been building this
- 3:29Speaker 3: team of guys that can get on base, that are
- 3:32Speaker 3: supposed to play great defense, and then be able to
- 3:35Speaker 3: steal a bag and be able to create havoc on
- 3:37Speaker 3: the base pats. They know home runs are expensive, and
- 3:40Speaker 3: that's the truth of baseball. Home runs are expensive and
- 3:42Speaker 3: strikeouts are expensive. So the Brewers operate in this market of, hey,
- 3:48Speaker 3: let's get guys that put the bat on ball, like
- 3:49Speaker 3: Bryce Terrang having another great start to a season, like
- 3:52Speaker 3: sal Friedlick, who's hitting over three hundreds still at this
- 3:54Speaker 3: point in the season, to be able to put to
- 3:57Speaker 3: get on base for those guys that are supposed to
- 4:00Speaker 3: be supplying the power right like Yellow who's got five
- 4:02Speaker 3: homers now, Like Contreras, like Hoskins, who's starting to get
- 4:05Speaker 3: going right now. And I know a lot of folks
- 4:07Speaker 3: talk about the departure of Willia Damas, and rightly so.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Thirty home runs, one hundred and twenty plus RBIs how
- 4:12Speaker 3: do you replace that? The Brewers are not going moneyball
- 4:15Speaker 3: and all we're going to replace him in the aggregat
- 4:17Speaker 3: or that sort of thing. The way they're looking at
- 4:19Speaker 3: it is, well, let's just go even deeper into the
- 4:21Speaker 3: way that we were successful in twenty twenty four, and
- 4:24Speaker 3: that is getting on base, stealing bases, and putting runners
- 4:28Speaker 3: in scoring position, because if you continue.
- 4:30Speaker 2: To do that, speed never has a bad day.
- 4:32Speaker 3: Putting the bat on ball in a second and third
- 4:34Speaker 3: and one out situation, that's still a run as opposed
- 4:36Speaker 3: to waiting on another three run homer from Willia Damas.
- 4:39Speaker 1: That's a great point. And I think watching the Brewers
- 4:40Speaker 1: last year, a bunch of us had the same realization,
- 4:43Speaker 1: including from the Cardinals. Themselves. The Brewers were such an
- 4:45Speaker 1: athletic team for the things that you just mentioned. They
- 4:48Speaker 1: played a smart brand of baseball. They were fast, they
- 4:50Speaker 1: took advantage of mistakes, and that kind of game that
- 4:53Speaker 1: they play. The Cardinals have one player who does this
- 4:56Speaker 1: very well, Victor Scott the Second. He changes the game
- 4:58Speaker 1: with his speed and his like you said, speed never
- 5:01Speaker 1: takes a day off, and his ability to know when
- 5:04Speaker 1: to use it. The Brewers, I think, have that ability
- 5:07Speaker 1: in a majority of their lineup, and that can really
- 5:10Speaker 1: help creating the offensive production like you mentioned.
- 5:12Speaker 3: And then for Victor's case too, I think of him
- 5:15Speaker 3: as a guy that also plays solid defense. I think
- 5:18Speaker 3: of Mason Wynn now that he's back from his back issues.
- 5:20Speaker 3: You have capable players of doing this. The difference is
- 5:24Speaker 3: the Brewers literally have drafted for this for years, and
- 5:28Speaker 3: they've drafted athletes, and they have drafted speed, and they
- 5:31Speaker 3: have drafted to add pieces. And they're getting Blake Perkins
- 5:34Speaker 3: back on the way. That's another guy that has speed,
- 5:36Speaker 3: that can play great defense, that puts bad on ball
- 5:39Speaker 3: and he's been out throughout all spring training. But I
- 5:41Speaker 3: think the point of it is in the difference, and
- 5:44Speaker 3: forgive me for already using the cliche. But the Cardinal
- 5:47Speaker 3: way has kind of shifted over here to Milwaukee, right.
- 5:50Speaker 3: I think of those classic teams of the Cardinals days.
- 5:53Speaker 3: I know Cardinals fans know what I'm talking about. Of course,
- 5:55Speaker 3: in the eighties and we can talk about eighty two,
- 5:57Speaker 3: we can talk about all those teams. But then even
- 5:59Speaker 3: in the two thousands, there were so many teams that
- 6:02Speaker 3: I think of X nine, Right, I think of the
- 6:05Speaker 3: great defensive roll in. I think of just doing the
- 6:07Speaker 3: little things right, and that leads to man, here they
- 6:10Speaker 3: are again, and that's what the Brewers have been able
- 6:12Speaker 3: to do so far.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Then, I think Cardinals fans maybe that's why we resonate
- 6:17Speaker 1: so well with how the or so much with how
- 6:18Speaker 1: the Brewers played, because they're like, hey, I remember that
- 6:20Speaker 1: brand of baseball. I remember that when that was a
- 6:21Speaker 1: thing in Saint Louis. So a surprising thing for the
- 6:24Speaker 1: Cardinals this year is that their rotation has actually been
- 6:27Speaker 1: pretty decent. It's everything else that has struggled. But we'll
- 6:30Speaker 1: get there. I'm looking at the probables for the Cardinals
- 6:33Speaker 1: and Brewers just got sent to me, and I have
- 6:35Speaker 1: to say it. The first two names of the Brewers
- 6:36Speaker 1: are not exactly names that I would go out there
- 6:38Speaker 1: and say, yeah, I recognize. On Friday, we're gonna see
- 6:41Speaker 1: Matthew Libertore. He's done a really nice job. I think
- 6:44Speaker 1: he's thrown three to three or four quality starts so
- 6:46Speaker 1: far this year. First right hander Chad Patrick, so you're
- 6:49Speaker 1: gonna kill me in on that one. And then Saturday
- 6:51Speaker 1: we'll get Sunny Gray he's three and oh off to
- 6:53Speaker 1: a really good start this year as well against Quinn Priester.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And then the series finale on Sunday you'll see Eric Fetti,
- 7:00Speaker 1: old friend Jose Cantana three to zero with an O
- 7:03Speaker 1: nine to six ERA shoven. What do you think about
- 7:06Speaker 1: the Brewers rotation right now?
- 7:08Speaker 3: Bruce rotation is getting better, and as we record this
- 7:11Speaker 3: on Thursday, Tobias Meyers just returned to the rotation. He
- 7:14Speaker 3: was last year's diamond in the rough that nobody saw coming,
- 7:17Speaker 3: had a three ERA twenty seven games a season ago,
- 7:20Speaker 3: one hundred and forty innings.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Great in the playoffs. The rotation is getting healthy.
- 7:25Speaker 3: I think the overreaction from the first week of the
- 7:28Speaker 3: season when the Brewers get whacked out of New York
- 7:31Speaker 3: and lose the home opener to the Royals in grand fashion. Right,
- 7:36Speaker 3: you look at all these blowouts. I mean, Nester's hurt
- 7:38Speaker 3: and we don't know how much he's going to pitch
- 7:40Speaker 3: the rest of the year. He's got at flexer strain,
- 7:42Speaker 3: the same thing injury that plagued him at the end
- 7:44Speaker 3: of last regular season. He's about to be a free agent.
- 7:48Speaker 3: You can put the cards together on that one. Then
- 7:50Speaker 3: you look at not having Tobias Myers at the start
- 7:52Speaker 3: of the season. He just returned, he had an oblique strain.
- 7:55Speaker 3: You don't have Aaron Ashby, you don't have d. L. Hull,
- 7:57Speaker 3: you don't have Aaron Savali, all the seven. You look
- 8:00Speaker 3: at the top eight of the Brewers starting rotation coming
- 8:03Speaker 3: out of spring training, and quite frankly, five of them
- 8:06Speaker 3: are hurt. And it's not something most teams can absorb.
- 8:11Speaker 3: But kudos to the Brewers to be able to go
- 8:13Speaker 3: get Jose Kintana during spring training. I tweeted it a
- 8:15Speaker 3: second ago, like the other night when he was shoving
- 8:18Speaker 3: once again twenty that other teams didn't want Jose Kintana
- 8:21Speaker 3: and it took huntil the first week of spring training
- 8:23Speaker 3: for somebody to sign him and now here he is
- 8:26Speaker 3: three starts in with the sub one eer.
- 8:28Speaker 2: It's like should we send them thank you cards?
- 8:30Speaker 1: Like?
- 8:30Speaker 3: How did nobody want this guy? He is the exact
- 8:33Speaker 3: professional that you expect. Cardinals fans know it as well.
- 8:38Speaker 3: But furthermore, Chad Patrick believing in the player development pipeline
- 8:42Speaker 3: the Brewers have with their pitching development. He's the latest
- 8:45Speaker 3: case of it. Chad has been traded twice. He was
- 8:48Speaker 3: originally drafted by the Diamondback small town out of Indiana,
- 8:52Speaker 3: and then got traded for Jace Peterson to the Oakland
- 8:55Speaker 3: A's at the time, and then traded for Abraham Toro
- 8:59Speaker 3: from the Brewers to the A's to come back over
- 9:02Speaker 3: to Milwaukee. And that's looking like the steal of the
- 9:04Speaker 3: century to get a guy who's currently in Triple A
- 9:07Speaker 3: with the Red Sox for a guy who's probably gonna
- 9:09Speaker 3: be in irrotation for the next few years to come
- 9:10Speaker 3: cutter sinker for Seemer a rare change up to he's
- 9:15Speaker 3: here's my fastball, you try to hit it. It's an
- 9:17Speaker 3: uncomfortable ow for three where he's like, oh I saw that.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Then you look up and you're O for three. And
- 9:20Speaker 3: he didn't hit a ball hard. That's what Chad Patrick
- 9:23Speaker 3: does so well. And for Quinn Priester, Brewers had to
- 9:25Speaker 3: make a trade because of all those injuries I talked about.
- 9:28Speaker 3: They had to go make a trade with the Red
- 9:30Speaker 3: Sox who acquired him from the Pirates last year. Former
- 9:32Speaker 3: first rounder and you can say post type sleeper, that
- 9:35Speaker 3: sort of thing. Another example of the Brewers trusting their
- 9:37Speaker 3: pitching development, saying, hey, here's an optionable starting pitcher. Let's
- 9:42Speaker 3: bring him in, bring him into what we do, let's
- 9:44Speaker 3: develop certain things, make him right, and you blink and
- 9:47Speaker 3: here he is with the sub to eis well, he
- 9:49Speaker 3: had the command issues as of late. But the Brewers
- 9:52Speaker 3: have something working in their pitching and they're gonna keep
- 9:54Speaker 3: leaning on it.
- 9:55Speaker 1: And this is so important, I think from Cardinals fans
- 9:57Speaker 1: to hear, because four years Saint Louis has not had
- 10:00Speaker 1: adequate starting pitching depth. They have quite literally run out
- 10:04Speaker 1: where they've had seven starters, and that includes what was
- 10:06Speaker 1: available in Triple A. Last season, there was a time
- 10:09Speaker 1: where they were running out with four major league starters
- 10:12Speaker 1: and just hoping that they could do a bullpen game
- 10:13Speaker 1: or a spot start for almost an entire month because
- 10:17Speaker 1: they don't have the pitching depth in their minor league system.
- 10:19Speaker 1: That's a whole other, separate tangent. Cardinals fans know it's
- 10:22Speaker 1: part of their whole organization overhaul. But good teams like
- 10:26Speaker 1: the Brewers, like the Mets, like the Dodgers. I know,
- 10:29Speaker 1: it's completely different pay scales, but in terms of player
- 10:32Speaker 1: like play on the field and organizational depth, that's what
- 10:35Speaker 1: they have. And the Brewers are able to stay consistent
- 10:38Speaker 1: and stay relevant because they have such deep starting pitching.
- 10:42Speaker 1: The Cardinals, if they lose one to two starters, they
- 10:46Speaker 1: have virtually nobody that they can call up, which is
- 10:48Speaker 1: why that they are using this kind of six man rotation.
- 10:52Speaker 1: Steven Mattz pitched in long relief on Tuesday against the Braves,
- 10:56Speaker 1: so he will not be in this rotation through the
- 10:58Speaker 1: Brewers at least, but he will pitch again in Cincinnati.
- 11:00Speaker 1: It's because the Cardinals are trying to prolong their starting
- 11:02Speaker 1: pitching health, so they're really maximizing the six days rest.
- 11:07Speaker 1: So that's why Cardinals are doing it. You're seeing a
- 11:10Speaker 1: true hand example on what teams that actually had the
- 11:13Speaker 1: depth in their minor league system can get away with. Yeah,
- 11:15Speaker 1: I think Saint Louis would be very happy to have
- 11:17Speaker 1: a Quinn Priester or a Chad Patrick waiting in the wings.
- 11:20Speaker 3: And furthermore, the Brewers had to send down Logan Henderson,
- 11:23Speaker 3: who struck out nine in his big league debut on Sunday.
- 11:26Speaker 3: They still have Jacob Mazarowski on the way. They still
- 11:29Speaker 3: have pitchers like Casey Hunts, like Carlos Rodriguez who are
- 11:32Speaker 3: even further on this step chart that they're like, yeah,
- 11:34Speaker 3: that guy's probably gonna be a big leaguer here pretty soon.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Rodriguez made his big league debut last year, and they've
- 11:39Speaker 3: got Robert Gasser who's recovering from Tommy John surgery. This
- 11:42Speaker 3: is what the Brewers do. They focus on home grown pitching.
- 11:46Speaker 3: It's how you had that three headed monster in twenty
- 11:48Speaker 3: twenty one of Corbyn Burns winning the cy Young, Brandon
- 11:51Speaker 3: Woodrow finishing fifth, and Freddie Perralta won to finish in
- 11:54Speaker 3: the top ten. If he was a qualified arm he
- 11:56Speaker 3: had missed some starts at the end. That's all home grown.
- 11:59Speaker 3: A hundred percent of that was homegrown. This isn't by accident.
- 12:02Speaker 3: This is what David Stearn's led the foundation for now.
- 12:04Speaker 3: Obviously he's with the Mets. Mount Arnold has picked up
- 12:07Speaker 3: exactly where he left off and continues to invest on
- 12:09Speaker 3: the player development side. I think people understand, Yes, the
- 12:13Speaker 3: Brewers don't spend money on free agents, they don't spend
- 12:15Speaker 3: money in trades, they don't do that sort of thing.
- 12:17Speaker 3: But I will give Brewers all the credit in the
- 12:19Speaker 3: world for how much they've invested behind the scenes and
- 12:22Speaker 3: how much money that costs. They've got a brand new
- 12:24Speaker 3: facility down in Central Domingo. They invest in their minor leagues,
- 12:27Speaker 3: they invest in their minor league's facilities, They invest in
- 12:30Speaker 3: what they're able to do with their pitching development, with
- 12:32Speaker 3: their analysts.
- 12:33Speaker 2: And that sort of thing.
- 12:34Speaker 3: That stuff costs money too, and the Brewers have said,
- 12:37Speaker 3: you know what, let's make sure that we can continue
- 12:39Speaker 3: to churn this factory. More important than going to spend
- 12:42Speaker 3: thirty million dollars on one guy who may or may
- 12:44Speaker 3: not perform. That's how the Brewers are operating, and because
- 12:47Speaker 3: they understand the investment it takes for pitching.
- 12:50Speaker 1: And I think that blueprint is exactly what the Saint
- 12:52Speaker 1: Louis Cardinals want to get to. It's going to take
- 12:55Speaker 1: some time. This is not something that they fix overnight.
- 12:58Speaker 1: You can certainly speak to that. It's a long, lengthy process.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And should they have started this years ago, probably they
- 13:05Speaker 1: did not. They're starting it now. It's one of heim
- 13:07Speaker 1: Bloom's big projects. He's just alongside with David Stearns in
- 13:11Speaker 1: terms of being one of those top leading names and
- 13:14Speaker 1: modernization of the game and player developments. So Cardinals fans,
- 13:17Speaker 1: if you're looking for a blueprint on what this could
- 13:19Speaker 1: look like in four to five years, the Brewers right now,
- 13:22Speaker 1: pretty good example. We'll get right into the division. I
- 13:26Speaker 1: know that there's a lot to talk about in our
- 13:27Speaker 1: very mighty and el central don, but first let's hear
- 13:30Speaker 1: a message from Arena.
- 13:31Speaker 2: Club Todd Father.
- 13:32Speaker 4: I want to pull a very expensive card out of
- 13:36Speaker 4: a pack, very difficult to do and very expensive.
- 13:39Speaker 2: I can't pay for it.
- 13:40Speaker 4: Okay, how could I acquire that card?
- 13:43Speaker 3: Simple?
- 13:43Speaker 1: Instead of driving somewhere, you go on Arena Club. Go
- 13:46Speaker 1: get you a slab pack, and you'll have some of
- 13:48Speaker 1: the best cards you're ever going to see, some one
- 13:49Speaker 1: on ones, some cards that you want to have, and
- 13:52Speaker 1: you can't get out of your home. Go right online
- 13:54Speaker 1: check out Arena Club.
- 13:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I cannot recommend it enough, and every time you
- 13:59Speaker 4: rip a slab pack, Arena Club will make you an
- 14:01Speaker 4: instant offer for your card based on its market value.
- 14:04Speaker 4: That's right, no guessing, no waiting, instant offer for the
- 14:06Speaker 4: estimated fair market value. You can accept it on the
- 14:09Speaker 4: spot and you can use that cash for another slab pack,
- 14:13Speaker 4: or you can buy, sell, trade. This platform has it
- 14:15Speaker 4: all for the collectors out there, and right now you
- 14:18Speaker 4: can get twenty percent off your first slab pack or
- 14:20Speaker 4: card purchase by going to Arena club dot com slash
- 14:22Speaker 4: fowl and use codefoul. That's Arena Club dot com slash foul,
- 14:28Speaker 4: code foul for twenty percent off your first purchase.
- 14:33Speaker 1: All right, So we're looking at the standings again. We're
- 14:35Speaker 1: recording this on Thursday, April twenty fourth, ahead of the
- 14:38Speaker 1: Brewers series finale against the Giants in San Francisco. But
- 14:42Speaker 1: looking at the standings right now, Brewers right around five hundred,
- 14:46Speaker 1: one game over, could be five hundred, could be Cardinals
- 14:50Speaker 1: holding it down with the Pirates in last ten and fifteen.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Similar records there, very same records there, similar to the
- 14:57Speaker 1: Reds who are twelve and thirteen. And then we have
- 15:00Speaker 1: the Chicago Cubs six games over five hundred. I'm a
- 15:05Speaker 1: little surprised and thought the Cubs were good. I thought
- 15:09Speaker 1: the gap between Chicago and the Brewers would be a
- 15:11Speaker 1: little closer right now. But Chicago looks like a legitimate team. John,
- 15:15Speaker 1: what are you thinking about the division?
- 15:17Speaker 3: The Cubs are legit. I think the Cubs are a
- 15:19Speaker 3: great ball club. I want to make that very clear,
- 15:21Speaker 3: even though I still picked the Brewers to win the division.
- 15:24Speaker 3: Maybe that's some hometown bias that sort of thing, But
- 15:26Speaker 3: here's why the Cubs are legit now. Justin Seal going
- 15:31Speaker 3: down is going to be a massive impact to them.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Do they go get somebody on the trade market? Are
- 15:36Speaker 3: they the ones that make to splash the pot and
- 15:39Speaker 3: go in and get Sandy al Contra or something like that.
- 15:42Speaker 3: But the Cubs can hit in Holy Cow. This is
- 15:46Speaker 3: a different ofference than we've seen from them in years past.
- 15:48Speaker 3: Last year just felt never felt like they got going.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Dancy Swanson had a tough year. Cody Bellinger obviously is
- 15:54Speaker 3: no longer. He had some injuries here as well. Say
- 15:56Speaker 3: Suzuki never really got going for them either. He was
- 15:58Speaker 3: the only guy that really had positive offense, and Ian
- 16:01Speaker 3: happ has been just a steady force. But now you
- 16:04Speaker 3: throw in Kyle Tucker. I've been a big fan of
- 16:06Speaker 3: what Miguel Amaia and Carson Kelly have been doing like
- 16:09Speaker 3: holy cow out of their catching corps. And then on
- 16:11Speaker 3: top of all of that, too, you've got Nico Horner
- 16:14Speaker 3: healthy again. You've got Pete crow Armstrong playing like a
- 16:17Speaker 3: future All Star that he's going to be. They're a
- 16:19Speaker 3: dangerous club, but their number one achilles heel is their bullpen.
- 16:24Speaker 3: And you can hit, and you can hit, and you
- 16:26Speaker 3: can hit, but if you're playing ten to nine games
- 16:29Speaker 3: all season long, that bullpen is going to be out
- 16:32Speaker 3: of gas by June. So that's something I'm monitoring with
- 16:35Speaker 3: the Cubs as something that Bruce can side and say, well,
- 16:38Speaker 3: does good pitching beat good hitting? This is the age
- 16:41Speaker 3: old forever question we'll always going to see in this
- 16:44Speaker 3: game because Bruce, they struggle offensively, That's no doubt. That's
- 16:47Speaker 3: the biggest calling card about the Brewers flaws. But these
- 16:51Speaker 3: two teams will meet next weekend for the first time
- 16:54Speaker 3: here in Milwaukee, and I think both teams are going
- 16:56Speaker 3: to find out a lot about themselves because now the
- 16:58Speaker 3: Cubs are done with that West Coast all done with
- 17:01Speaker 3: the Diamondbacks, are done with the Padres, are done with
- 17:03Speaker 3: the Dodgers, but now they're going to finally start facing
- 17:05Speaker 3: their own division and seeing the Brewers for both of
- 17:08Speaker 3: these teams are like, okay, how good are we really?
- 17:10Speaker 1: Definitely, and this is this upcoming series between the Cardinals
- 17:13Speaker 1: and the Brewers is both teams just their second time
- 17:16Speaker 1: matching up against division opponents. So the Cardinals don't really
- 17:19Speaker 1: know what the enel central is either. I will say
- 17:21Speaker 1: it's interesting you want to talk about an achilles heel
- 17:23Speaker 1: being the bullpen. Well, Saint Louis certainly knows that we
- 17:25Speaker 1: broke down all of the bullpen issues, decisions controversy on
- 17:30Speaker 1: Thursday with the episode with Bernie michlss. So check it
- 17:33Speaker 1: out Cardinals territory fans. But this bullpen will make or
- 17:36Speaker 1: break you. The Cardinals have had this problem pretty much
- 17:39Speaker 1: all year long, and bullpens are so volatile and relief
- 17:44Speaker 1: pitchers are so finicky, and not just between the season,
- 17:46Speaker 1: but honestly between weeks. Sometimes they have it, sometimes they don't.
- 17:49Speaker 1: But for a Cardinals bullpen that was so locked down
- 17:52Speaker 1: in the majors last year, for them to come up,
- 17:54Speaker 1: and outside of Brian Helsley, Phil Mayton, who they signed
- 17:58Speaker 1: with three weeks left in spring training, and Kyle Lahy,
- 18:01Speaker 1: those are three guys you trust out of eight possible spots. So, Cubs,
- 18:05Speaker 1: if that is the issue that you are having, then
- 18:07Speaker 1: I'd be side with you, Dominic. I just feel like
- 18:10Speaker 1: it's far too early to tell. And I agree, well,
- 18:12Speaker 1: when we look at the Cubs and the Brewers and
- 18:13Speaker 1: that matchup, will have a little bit better idea of
- 18:15Speaker 1: how the team stack up against each other. But I
- 18:17Speaker 1: still think this division is pretty wide open.
- 18:20Speaker 2: I think it is wide open.
- 18:21Speaker 3: I do think it is mainly between those two, the
- 18:25Speaker 3: Brewers and the Cubs. The Reds, I always want to
- 18:27Speaker 3: believe in them, but they always.
- 18:28Speaker 1: Discope with me same every year.
- 18:31Speaker 3: You should be so much better than this, And I
- 18:33Speaker 3: think the Reds are going to learn this year. I
- 18:36Speaker 3: texted this to a friend of mine who's a big
- 18:37Speaker 3: Reds fan, said, the Reds are going to learn this
- 18:39Speaker 3: year with the Cubs learned last year.
- 18:41Speaker 2: Just changing managers, just and change the roster.
- 18:43Speaker 3: And they're going to get under Tito's tutelage. He's going
- 18:47Speaker 3: to be great for that role, just like I believe
- 18:49Speaker 3: Krek counsel is going to be just fine in Chicago.
- 18:51Speaker 3: But at the same time, I don't think anybody expected
- 18:53Speaker 3: the Cubs to be flirting with five hundred in year
- 18:55Speaker 3: one of corek council. But then you look at the
- 18:58Speaker 3: roster and it's like, okay, yeah, that does make sense. Actually,
- 19:00Speaker 3: So for this division, God, can we get Paul Skiing
- 19:04Speaker 3: some help down in Pittsburgh.
- 19:06Speaker 2: God, Saint Louis, can you do this rebuild? Right?
- 19:09Speaker 3: Like, there's just so many headlines that aren't Is this
- 19:13Speaker 3: team good? Which is kind of what brings everybody down
- 19:16Speaker 3: about the NL Central, right, Like how often we have
- 19:18Speaker 3: to defend the NL Central. No, No, the Cubs and
- 19:21Speaker 3: Brewers are good teams. Just just trust us, and then
- 19:23Speaker 3: they don't get out of the first round, so it's
- 19:25Speaker 3: likely they're good, but we can't defend it forever.
- 19:28Speaker 1: And all Central, you're not helping your cause here with
- 19:31Speaker 1: all these early playoff exits and they usually get one
- 19:33Speaker 1: team in there anyway. So I'm excited to see how
- 19:36Speaker 1: this is, how this place, this division looks in June
- 19:38Speaker 1: or so. I don't expect the Cardinals to I actually
- 19:43Speaker 1: have no idea what I expect the Cardinals anymore. It's
- 19:45Speaker 1: riding this roller coaster for this transition season. We finished
- 19:49Speaker 1: against you know, had a homestand against the Phillies and
- 19:52Speaker 1: the Astros, and I I was leaving, I was talking
- 19:54Speaker 1: to a couple of friends and I was like, you know,
- 19:55Speaker 1: maybe this team is a little bit better than people
- 19:57Speaker 1: are giving them credit for. And then they go one
- 19:59Speaker 1: and six on the road and it just everything goes
- 20:01Speaker 1: off the rails and I'm like, I don't know, I
- 20:02Speaker 1: don't know anything.
- 20:03Speaker 3: So well, you fit hot team in the Mets best
- 20:06Speaker 3: record in baseball, okay. And then the Braves, you knew
- 20:09Speaker 3: they were gonna stay zero to seven all year long,
- 20:12Speaker 3: and they're finally getting going and they're finally feeling like themselves.
- 20:15Speaker 3: And he had the spice of the Jared Kelnick stuff
- 20:17Speaker 3: and they're starting to come together. It's odd howse stuff
- 20:19Speaker 3: like that can kind of bring a team closer and
- 20:22Speaker 3: get them going better. When I look at the Cardinals
- 20:24Speaker 3: and correct me if I'm wrong here, it's just like
- 20:26Speaker 3: these kids. I mean, having Mason back is going to
- 20:29Speaker 3: be huge, but it's like the kids can prove these
- 20:32Speaker 3: third fourth year guys like, Okay, this is gonna be
- 20:34Speaker 3: my team here pretty soon. I better start performing, And
- 20:38Speaker 3: they're finding out how hard that is to do when
- 20:40Speaker 3: you're suddenly the guy on the scouting report that's like, okay,
- 20:43Speaker 3: circle that guy, figure out how to get him out
- 20:45Speaker 3: and it just hasn't got going for them yet.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Yes, that's that's pretty much what it is. This is
- 20:50Speaker 1: the whole point of their transition season, right is to
- 20:52Speaker 1: run these guys out every single day, regardless of like
- 20:55Speaker 1: individual results, and hope they figure it out because when
- 20:59Speaker 1: John Mozaylock steps down and Heim Bloom takes over, he's
- 21:01Speaker 1: going to want to know which pieces to build around.
- 21:04Speaker 1: So in prior years, if someone like a Jordan Walker
- 21:07Speaker 1: or a Nolan Gorman struggled, they would be optioned or
- 21:10Speaker 1: they would have their playing time cut, which is what
- 21:11Speaker 1: you do when you're trying to win ball games. The
- 21:13Speaker 1: Cardinals are trying to see how they can win ball
- 21:15Speaker 1: games in the future, not necessarily right now. So they're
- 21:18Speaker 1: going to run guys that they're like Jordan Walker, who
- 21:20Speaker 1: is slumping heavily over the last two weeks. They're going
- 21:23Speaker 1: to keep running out Nolan Gorman. In fact, Olie Marma
- 21:25Speaker 1: went out over the Atlanta Braves series and said, we
- 21:27Speaker 1: are going to give Gorman a little bit of a
- 21:29Speaker 1: run here because we need to see what he has.
- 21:31Speaker 1: If he's in proved his contact rate. They're going to
- 21:33Speaker 1: continue running out guys relievers like Jojo Romero and Ryan Fernandez,
- 21:36Speaker 1: because it's about finding ways to adapt in the big leagues.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Does it make for some maddening, frustrating baseball games, Absolutely,
- 21:43Speaker 1: But this was the whole premise of the Cardinals coming
- 21:45Speaker 1: into the twenty twenty five season. See what we have
- 21:48Speaker 1: so we know what we can build with in the future.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Far too early to tell on April twenty fourth what
- 21:53Speaker 1: future pieces look like, but I will say it's not
- 21:56Speaker 1: been the best month. April has not been the best
- 21:58Speaker 1: month to start the season.
- 22:00Speaker 3: You are dealing with a bunch of guys who were
- 22:02Speaker 3: performing like Jackson Curio in the first half of last season,
- 22:06Speaker 3: and the Brewers said, hey, there's nothing for him to
- 22:08Speaker 3: learn in Triple A. He's either going to sing or
- 22:10Speaker 3: swim here in the big leagues. And he obviously eventually
- 22:12Speaker 3: started the swim. And that's what Cardinals fans, I think
- 22:14Speaker 3: are hoping right now, to say the least.
- 22:16Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, the fact is not every single
- 22:18Speaker 1: player is going to rise and prosper here. That's just
- 22:21Speaker 1: the unfortunate reality. And if they do, then all of
- 22:23Speaker 1: a sudden, this rebuild or transition or whatever we're calling
- 22:26Speaker 1: it is looking a lot less short. But I think
- 22:29Speaker 1: it's so hard in Saint Louis because this is the
- 22:31Speaker 1: first time that they've done anything like this, and Cardinals
- 22:34Speaker 1: fans have been conditioned to expect a certain quality of
- 22:36Speaker 1: baseball for decades, and that quality of baseball right now
- 22:40Speaker 1: was not up to their standard. And you go you
- 22:42Speaker 1: tie that into a front office and an ownership that
- 22:45Speaker 1: did not spend They spent two million dollars of the
- 22:48Speaker 1: entire offseason on the Mayton deal. They tried to trade
- 22:51Speaker 1: many of their players. They did not bring back key
- 22:53Speaker 1: players like Paul Golshm and Andrew Kittridge. And you're seeing that.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I mean, I'll be shocked to see what this series
- 22:58Speaker 1: looks like. A week and serious against the Brewers in April,
- 23:01Speaker 1: with the weather supposed to be relatively okay, it's been
- 23:04Speaker 1: a pretty empty ballpark, and I think that fan apathy
- 23:07Speaker 1: is really setting in, especially after this last road trip.
- 23:11Speaker 3: And the Blues in the playoffs. Too, right, So that's
- 23:12Speaker 3: not gonna help things either. So it's just things that
- 23:15Speaker 3: we're monitoring.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Go Stars.
- 23:16Speaker 3: By the way, I'm a big Stars guys. They won
- 23:17Speaker 3: an overtime again last night, so.
- 23:19Speaker 1: You gotta get the podcast an LGB. I say this
- 23:22Speaker 1: like I know anything about hockey. Boy, let's go all right,
- 23:26Speaker 1: welcome back to the division real quick. First message from
- 23:29Speaker 1: fandel Sports Network me out to my band Drill Sports Work.
- 23:37Speaker 4: Yeah, watch these bingers and rbs.
- 23:41Speaker 1: I'm just glad I am my local duel for Roo
- 23:45Speaker 1: re group for the Cardinal.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Duels Sports now card the Birds.
- 23:55Speaker 1: I'm that banger has been stuck in my head for
- 24:04Speaker 1: like two days, so I.
- 24:05Speaker 2: Have it here too. Obviously.
- 24:07Speaker 3: Oh, I'm employed by FanDuel Sports Network in part, so
- 24:12Speaker 3: I can't say anything.
- 24:13Speaker 1: It's it's I wish, I don't know. I think baseball
- 24:16Speaker 1: has just completely warped my mind, as you know all
- 24:18Speaker 1: too well, at this point of the season. Just what
- 24:21Speaker 1: it is.
- 24:21Speaker 3: We're already at this point in April, Katie, I'm worried
- 24:23Speaker 3: for your well being.
- 24:23Speaker 1: Then we should be worried about my well being for
- 24:25Speaker 1: a lot of things. All right, big three game series,
- 24:30Speaker 1: as big as you can get in April, we're looking
- 24:32Speaker 1: for our Fandel Sports Network player to watch. Who are
- 24:36Speaker 1: you watching from this Brewer squad coming up?
- 24:38Speaker 3: It's got to be Bryce Terrang. He has been awesome
- 24:40Speaker 3: so far this season. Even though the Cardinals are starting
- 24:43Speaker 3: a lefty on Friday and Librator, he's probably gonna be
- 24:46Speaker 3: in the top of the lineup. And I think of
- 24:47Speaker 3: when Bryce Terrang first came up in the big leagues,
- 24:50Speaker 3: he was not allowed to see a lefty at all.
- 24:52Speaker 3: Then last year started to get a little bit more
- 24:54Speaker 3: against lefties. Now this year he's taken another leap forward.
- 24:57Speaker 3: We call it the quantum leap. Last year he can
- 25:00Speaker 3: he needs to improve. He calls it man's strength. He's
- 25:02Speaker 3: twenty five years old now, he's a man now, right.
- 25:05Speaker 3: But he has been awesome this season, a true traditional
- 25:09Speaker 3: leadoff man.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Fifty stolen bases a year ago.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Believe he's at seven right now, well on his way
- 25:13Speaker 3: to try to do it again.
- 25:15Speaker 1: So you're telling me that an organization can have a
- 25:17Speaker 1: second basement and not put tune him. And then all
- 25:19Speaker 1: of a sudden, and.
- 25:20Speaker 2: It took some teeth pulling.
- 25:22Speaker 3: It took a lot of teeth pulling, but they eventually
- 25:25Speaker 3: relented and look at what they've got now.
- 25:28Speaker 1: Yeah, see, Cardinals fans, there's there is hope. I think
- 25:31Speaker 1: the player I'm want to watch from this series from
- 25:34Speaker 1: the Brewers is Kintana. I mean, just a full disclosure.
- 25:39Speaker 1: I really liked him when when he was a Cardinal
- 25:42Speaker 1: for two months, and I think they really wanted to
- 25:44Speaker 1: bring him back. Well I think some did, not the
- 25:46Speaker 1: front office. And it baffles me how Kintana continuously post
- 25:53Speaker 1: year after year. Is not just a like quality starter,
- 25:57Speaker 1: but he's not a one or two obviously, but he's
- 25:59Speaker 1: one of those guys that you put into the upper
- 26:01Speaker 1: part of your rotation and he's a difference maker.
- 26:05Speaker 2: And every year, yeah.
- 26:07Speaker 1: No one picks him up. I don't get it.
- 26:09Speaker 2: It's the nerdification of our sport, right, and I'm a nerd.
- 26:12Speaker 2: I'll put my hand up on that too.
- 26:14Speaker 3: But it's like, oh, we want a guy that throws
- 26:15Speaker 3: ninety five, and we want to call up our kid
- 26:17Speaker 3: that doesn't know where it's going, that throws ninety eight.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Well it's like, but here's a guy that can give
- 26:21Speaker 3: you one hundred and forty innings no problem, drop of
- 26:23Speaker 3: a hat has been doing it.
- 26:24Speaker 2: For thirteen years.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Why don't you want this guy? He's like, we want
- 26:28Speaker 3: our own guy, controllable. I'm so glad the Brewers are
- 26:32Speaker 3: the ones that finally did this, and it took a
- 26:34Speaker 3: lot of convincing from Pat Murphy. From Mann't Pat Murphy
- 26:38Speaker 3: was the one champion, hote. I've seen this guy shove
- 26:41Speaker 3: against us for years and years and years. Bring him
- 26:43Speaker 3: on our side and see what happened that. It's a
- 26:45Speaker 3: great pick, Katie.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Hey, Pat Murphy a big asu.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Guy, Big devils here go, Yeah, big.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Devils, Big Devil's on podcast for us? All right, quickly.

- 27:20Speaker 1: My friend, I wish we were in Milwaukee so I
- 27:22Speaker 1: could see you, but that will happen in June Milwaukee
- 27:26Speaker 1: my favorite my I think my second favorite.
- 27:29Speaker 2: Road city one New York, San Francisco.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Okay, so Milwaukee is my third favorite city.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I had a feeling, yeah.
- 27:38Speaker 1: Like a road city because I get to go home.
- 27:40Speaker 1: But Chicago and San Diego are up there too. Milwaukee though,
- 27:42Speaker 1: sneaky fun. You know, I love that public market.
- 27:45Speaker 2: It's so we're literally right over here.
- 27:47Speaker 3: I'm gonna go stop buying grabs some lunch here in
- 27:49Speaker 3: a little bit there. Milwaukee sneaky, great city. I know
- 27:52Speaker 3: Saint Louis fans hate to hear it. And I'll actually
- 27:54Speaker 3: be in Saint Louis at the end of the year
- 27:56Speaker 3: in September for that final home road weekend that the
- 28:00Speaker 3: Bruis have.
- 28:02Speaker 2: So I think September is the right time to see
- 28:04Speaker 2: Saint Luis.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Yeah right, I don't really know if there's a good
- 28:09Speaker 1: time to visit weather wise.
- 28:11Speaker 3: Well, yeah, it's a coin flip, but you know, we
- 28:13Speaker 3: got a roof on it, so we don't got to
- 28:15Speaker 3: worry about that here.
- 28:16Speaker 1: Yeah, it must be nice. I've seen the tarp way
- 28:18Speaker 1: way more than I've really wanted to. Dom my friend,
- 28:20Speaker 1: thank you so much for doing this. Where can we
- 28:23Speaker 1: find your work. Where can we follow you?
- 28:24Speaker 2: Thanks Katie.
- 28:25Speaker 3: So I'm on ex Twitter, the everything app whatever we're
- 28:28Speaker 3: calling it at dom Underscore Katronio, same spelling as the
- 28:31Speaker 3: name right here. I'm on Instagram sparingly dom Brewers base
- 28:35Speaker 3: It's dom ce Baseball on Instagram. It's mostly Bruce centered content,
- 28:39Speaker 3: but on pre and post game almost every Bruise game
- 28:42Speaker 3: this year. Here on six to twenty w TAMJ here
- 28:44Speaker 3: locally Milwaukee, all the podcasts, all that stuff. There are
- 28:47Speaker 3: not many dominant patronios in the world, and quite frankly,
- 28:49Speaker 3: google me and it usually works out perfect.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Love that for you. Thank you so much again for
- 28:54Speaker 1: doing this. We will talk soon. Cardial Territory. We're going
- 28:57Speaker 1: to be back with you after the Brewer series. Thanks
- 28:59Speaker 1: as always for watching.
