- 0:00SPEAKER_01: We're glad you all are here.
- 0:02SPEAKER_01: Welcome to this deeper conversation.
- 0:04And we're going to we're going to rummage around your spiritual
- 0:07toolkit a little bit.
- 0:09Well,
- 0:09my favorite part of my spiritual toolkit is how I start each
- 0:12morning.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: So I have a gizmo.
- 0:16SPEAKER_00: I don't know if you call it an app or what.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: It's from the Institute of HeartMath called their inner balance app.
- 0:23SPEAKER_00: I guess it's what it's called.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: This thing you hook onto your ear.
- 0:26and then you do this breathing and these processes to get into
- 0:30heart coherence so I
- 0:32sort of made up my own version of it and I call it the love
- 0:37gratitude process so I
- 0:40put this on and then I get this screen up which it shows you
- 0:44when you're actually
- 0:44going into heart coherence it's got different colors and sounds
- 0:48to it and then I
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: first sort of
- 0:54Imagine that I'm opening my heart to welcome in all the love
- 1:00that my friends and
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: family have for me,
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: just to acknowledge the presence of that.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: And then I start to individually sort of send an intention to each one,
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: depending on sort of the level of need.
- 1:15I start with the people who are dealing with a lot of illnesses
- 1:19and I just send
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: them sort of this vibe of I see you getting
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: better,
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: getting what you need,
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: being pain free,
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: having a long,
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: healthy,
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: happy,
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: safe life,
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: lots of longevity.
- 1:33And it takes me about a half hour to go through because I have
- 1:37a lot of friends and
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: a lot of family and they all do different things.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: And I even do it for people I don't like.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: That was my question.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: You just read my mind.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: The 12 minute people, even for them.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: Well, some of them I never talk to because they're just so hostile.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: But I thought, you know, I actually feel bad for one in particular.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And so I wish for her to find solutions and equanimity and, you know,
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: Just some presence and balance.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: You know, I'm very, very judgmental towards somebody.
- 2:21I try to at least do two a day of people that it's like they
- 2:24could use a lot of,
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: use some energy.
- 2:27So but what that does is when you do that whole process,
- 2:31you get totally filled up.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Your love frequency and your love tank is all filled up.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And then I get out of bed.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Start from this place of,
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: I've just sent a lot of love out and a lot of love's coming back to me.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: and why not start there as opposed to,
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I can hear my husband downstairs listening to CNN.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: I don't want to hear what's going on.
- 2:56But I,
- 2:57you know,
- 2:57as a 51 year old woman,
- 2:59I think something I find surprising that I wasn't
- 3:03I don't know I don't know why I find it surprising it might be
- 3:06like duh is is you
- 3:08know the number of people that you accumulate and you connect
- 3:11with throughout your
- 3:12years on this planet and the friendships that end and the
- 3:17relationships that
- 3:18transition and that people really are in your life for a reason
- 3:22season and a
- 3:23lifetime and your ability to relate to that really needs to get
- 3:28better as you get
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: older
- 3:30and this sounds like such an amazing tool that helps to keep
- 3:34you focused on the
- 3:36loving presence because even if you're not in a relationship
- 3:39with a person anymore
- 3:40I'm laughing because when I did this Queen Ager TED Talk a
- 3:44couple of years ago part
- 3:46of what I was talking about was well the basic story was my
- 3:51husband and I went to a
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: party and there was somebody there that I often judged and didn't like
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: And when we got in the car,
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: he said to me,
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: he said,
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: oh,
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: I saw you spent a lot of time talking to Nancy.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: I thought you didn't like her.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: And I said, well, you know, I hadn't seen her in a long time.
- 4:10And then when she was standing right in front of me,
- 4:12I couldn't remember why I didn't like her.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: So I just decided to start over.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: That's beautiful.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: Very pleasant.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: And I saw that with other people in life.
- 4:26Like I have this brother who basically stopped talking to me 13
- 4:30years ago,
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: and I just decided,
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: you know what?
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: I'm never going to know why he's doing what he's doing.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: There's no reason for it.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: But just I'll put him on my love gratitude list.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: I'll be hopeful that he's finding some joy in his life.
- 4:49So that's sort of one of the big things that's in my spiritual
- 4:53toolkit is really
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: practicing being love.
- 4:56Because for a long time,
- 4:57my tagline was helping people find love,
- 5:00keep love and be love.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: I'm real bored with the finding love and keeping love stuff.
- 5:05SPEAKER_00: I can't be love.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: And I just want to just like, let's just be love now.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: And what does that look like for me?
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: And, you know, what is that?
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: And that's really the most
- 5:17to use your words joyful place to be can I consciously choose
- 5:23to be loving in spite
- 5:25of the fact that you know that color lipstick she's wearing is
- 5:28so wrong you know
- 5:30like those thoughts are those thoughts are in the bathroom
- 5:32those very human
- 5:33thoughts right that yeah because well the other thing that I
- 5:37think would be really
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: helpful for for our community is like how do we
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: How do we get back to joy when we are in a triggered place,
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: when we are in a place when you go,
- 5:47SPEAKER_02: how on earth can someone possibly think that this is okay?
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: I actually, I have a little fix for that.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: So if let's say you're really upset with yourself,
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: like you're really just like the choir screaming at you.
- 6:08So what I would have you do is set the timer on your phone or
- 6:12little egg timer for
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: three minutes.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: And for three minutes,
- 6:16I want you to be as mean and cruel and nasty to yourself as you
- 6:21ever been.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: You stupid bitch.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: I can't believe what a crazy thing you did.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: It's amazing.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Anybody would ever talk to you.
- 6:29SPEAKER_00: You're such a loser.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Like just attack yourself.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: And if you're doing this properly, you won't even make it to a minute.
- 6:37There's no way you can do it for three minutes because your
- 6:40conscious mind is going
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: to start laughing.
- 6:43Now you're just going to start laughing because you know all
- 6:46that stuff you're
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: saying isn't true.
- 6:48So if you get to the laughing part,
- 6:51then go and stand in front of a mirror and do the opposite.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: it's like,
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 6:57you're so kind and genius and you did this for so and so today
- 7:00and you're,
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 7:02giving 10% of your income to this causes and your dog and your
- 7:06cat really love you.
- 7:08And then you end with blowing yourself a kiss while you're
- 7:12looking in the mirror.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because you don't want to deny it.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Like one of the things my sister used to teach about what the shadow is,
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: is she would say,
- 7:21have you ever been in a pool where you were trying to hold down
- 7:24a beach ball under
- 7:25the water and you're trying so hard to hold it down and
- 7:28eventually it pops up and
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: hits
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Because that's your shadow.
- 7:32You're trying to suppress your shadow and it's going to leak
- 7:35out and other people
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: are going to see it.
- 7:38So that's why you need to go and learn to love and embrace and
- 7:41accept your shadow,
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: the good,
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: the bad and the ugly,
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: because we all have dark sides and light sides.
- 7:47So you might as well learn to love it and embrace it and find
- 7:50the gold in it.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: And I think
- 7:57SPEAKER_01: that when you're doing that,
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: when you're doing that work of like you're when you're pushing it down,
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: I think part of that pushing it down is how busy we stay.
- 8:06SPEAKER_02: Oh, yes.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: So it's not like I'm not, you know, yeah, avoid or avoid.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 8:12SPEAKER_01: So that sense of numbing out, numbing out.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: But it's like all these different ways that we push it down.
- 8:18which are socially acceptable,
- 8:20like the being so busy that you can't look at anything else.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: You can barely take a breath.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: And yet people wear that busy badge all the time.
- 8:31But unless we have a consistent connection with the true
- 8:36essence of who we really
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: are,
- 8:38SPEAKER_02: then I don't believe we can reach happiness or joy.
- 8:43SPEAKER_00: because this is where it is.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: I think it comes and goes.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like, it's not a consistent thing.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: There are definitely, because I think we're so tied up in our feelings.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: That's where people mess up when it comes to love lives.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: They think love is a feeling.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Love is not a feeling.
- 9:01Anybody who's been married or in long-term relationship knows
- 9:04you could be with
- 9:04somebody you believe to be your soulmate and you're totally
- 9:08committed to them and
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: there will be days when you hate them
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but it doesn't mean that you don't love them.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: And it's kind of like that with you.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: Well, the choir is never going to die.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: You know, the choir is not going away.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: We're all insecure.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: You know, how do we cope with it?
- 9:25Oprah told this great story about how somebody was talking
- 9:30about insecurity and she
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: said,
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: let me tell you something.
- 9:33SPEAKER_00: She said,
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: I've interviewed everybody on the planet,
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: kings,
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: queens,
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: rock stars,
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: presidents,
- 9:40SPEAKER_00: everybody.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: and at the end of every single interview I've ever done,
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: they all say the same thing to me,
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: which is,
- 9:50SPEAKER_00: was that okay?
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: Was that okay?
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Was that okay?
- 9:54Because we want to be seen and heard and loved and cherished
- 9:58and acknowledged.
- 10:00you know and there's only one person alive on the planet right
- 10:03now who no matter
- 10:04what he does says he's the greatest but other than that the
- 10:07rest of us wonder who
- 10:09that could be the rest of us right the rest of us have
- 10:12insecurities it's like even
- 10:14you know like I know that I'm a good writer I've been a good
- 10:18writer for a long time
- 10:20but until I show whatever my latest piece is to Brian and he
- 10:25says oh yeah this is
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: really good or sometimes I say oh this needs a little tweaking
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: You know, I need that feedback.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: I want that recognition.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: I don't want to live in a cave, you know, by myself.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: That would be hideous.
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 10:42SPEAKER_02: Well, thank you, Ariel.
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: We're at time, and I really appreciate who you are.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: And I love who you are now.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: because you have had a life.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: You've had like many chapters, like few of us have.
- 11:02But who you are now and how you show up is an amazing example
- 11:06of what we can all
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: aspire to be and how we can all aspire to be.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: So I really appreciate you sharing your wisdom.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: It was really fun being with you guys.
- 11:15SPEAKER_01: Yay.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: We love you.
- 11:16SPEAKER_01: Thank you for the permission that you are.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: I always enjoy you.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: It's fun.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Thank you so much.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: Keep spreading your joy to the world.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: We need it.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: We need it.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: We need it.
