- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Thursday March 20th
- 0:17and if you have missed a couple of days, well we are already in
- 0:21the thick of the Jesus story as told in the Gospel of John.
- 0:26John spends the 1st chapter really kind of setting the scene
- 0:30for who Jesus is in the greater cosmos and then in chapter 2
- 0:35bang we are straight into Jesus ministry and his miraculous
- 0:39signs. So just as John dives straight
- 0:42into the the telling of these stories, why don't we do the
- 0:46same today as we read together John Chapter 2?
- 1:00The next day there was a wedding celebration in the village of
- 1:03Cana in Galilee. Jesus mother was there and Jesus
- 1:08and his disciples were also invited to the celebration.
- 1:11The wine supply ran out during the festivities, so Jesus mother
- 1:16told him they have no more wine. Dear woman, that's not our
- 1:21problem, Jesus replied. My time has not yet come.
- 1:27But his mother told the servants, do whatever he tells
- 1:30you. Standing nearby were six stone
- 1:34water jars used for Jewish ceremonial washing.
- 1:37Each could hold 20 to 30 gallons.
- 1:41Sir Jesus told the servants, fill the jars with water.
- 1:45When the jars had been filled, he said, now dip some out and
- 1:50take it to the master of ceremonies.
- 1:52So the servants followed his instructions.
- 1:55When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now
- 1:59wine, not knowing where it had come from, though of course the
- 2:03servants knew, he called the bridegroom over.
- 2:07A host always serves the best wine first, he said.
- 2:10Then when everyone's had a lot to drink, he brings out the less
- 2:13expensive wine. But you have kept the best until
- 2:17now. This miraculous sign at Cana in
- 2:21Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory and his
- 2:26disciples believed in him. After the wedding, he went to
- 2:31Capernaum for a few days with his mother, his brothers and his
- 2:35disciples. It was nearly time for the
- 2:39Jewish Passover celebration, so Jesus went to Jerusalem.
- 2:43In the temple area, he saw merchants selling cattle, sheep
- 2:47and doves for sacrifices. He also saw dealers at tables
- 2:52exchanging foreign money. Jesus made a whip from some
- 2:56ropes and chased them all out of the temple.
- 3:00He drove out the sheep and cattle, scattered the money
- 3:03changers coins over the floor and turned over their tables.
- 3:08Then, going over to the people who sold doves, he told them,
- 3:12get these things out of here. Stop turning my father's house
- 3:17into a marketplace. Then his disciples remembered
- 3:21this prophecy from the Scriptures.
- 3:24Passion for God's house will consume me.
- 3:28But the Jewish leaders demanded, What are you doing?
- 3:32If God gave you authority to do this, show us a miraculous sign
- 3:36to prove it. All right, Jesus replied,
- 3:40Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.
- 3:45What? They exclaimed.
- 3:48It has taken 46 years to build this temple, and you can rebuild
- 3:53it in P3 days. But when Jesus said this temple,
- 3:58he meant his own body. After he was raised from the
- 4:02dead, his disciples remembered he'd said this, and they
- 4:06believed both the Scriptures and what Jesus had said.
- 4:11Because of the miraculous signs Jesus did in Jerusalem at the
- 4:14Passover celebration, many began to trust in Him.
- 4:19But Jesus didn't trust them because he knew all about
- 4:23people. No one needed to tell Him about
- 4:26human nature, for he knew what was in each person's heart.
- 4:41Oh Jesus, we already see this incredible dichotomy in you
- 4:47already after such a short time in this Gospel.
- 4:51This gospel begins with stories of you creating the universe,
- 4:56with you reaching out your hands and bringing things into being.
- 5:01Nothing was created without it happening through you and your
- 5:06presence there. And then here we see you seeing
- 5:11into the hearts of people. You are the God of all creation,
- 5:19the God who knows each of us intimately inside and out.
- 5:26Jesus, you have come here full of love and faithfulness that
- 5:32even when what you see in our hearts saddens you because we
- 5:36know only too well that our hearts are corrupted, that our
- 5:39thoughts are selfish and not what we want them to be.
- 5:45And you see all of this, yet you still love us because you are
- 5:51our loving, loving Saviour. Oh, and we're so grateful that
- 5:56you see us completely and you accept us wholeheartedly.
- 6:03So into that embrace, we step and we say thank you and we love
- 6:09you. And we pray all of this in your
- 6:12wonderful, amazing name, Jesus, Amen.
