Transcript
- 0:00Hi, everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:03daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:06from social media, the creator economy and the digital space
- 0:10every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:22All right, I want to get straight in to the stories for
- 0:26today. And the first one, it's a little
- 0:29bit of an offshoot of Friday's deep dive.
- 0:32So I'm going to talk about how Justin Baldoni is now suing
- 0:36Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds and their PR team for $400 million
- 0:42in the ongoing It ends with US legal battle.
- 0:45OK, before I get into what he's saying, I knew that Friday's
- 0:48episode would be very divisive because that the whole situation
- 0:55around this legal battle, there are a lot of very, very strong
- 0:58opinions, but I did not realize how divisive it would be.
- 1:05I genuinely like, I don't know how to accurately convey this
- 1:11but I genuinely did not try to sway your opinion one way or
- 1:18another and I'm getting comments that episode was about celebrity
- 1:22smear campaigns. I genuinely apologize if you
- 1:25feel like we didn't do it justice.
- 1:27Like that is literally my biggest concern about this
- 1:31brand, this podcast in general. That's one of my biggest
- 1:34insecurities. That's why every time you guys
- 1:37let me know I've made a mistake or if I discover that I've made
- 1:39a mistake on a story in my reporting, I come on here and I
- 1:42literally immediately address it or I make a community note or
- 1:46whatever it is. I'll re edit episodes sometimes.
- 1:49Like that is one of my biggest concerns.
- 1:51And I also recognize that the people listening to this are
- 1:53probably not the people that have since unsubscribed after
- 1:57Friday's episode. And so this is probably landing
- 1:59on deaf ears kind of. But genuinely, that episode was
- 2:03about celebrity smear campaigns, the history of celebrity smear
- 2:06campaigns. I recognize that obviously there
- 2:09was some type of, you know, like I talked about how Blake Lively
- 2:12was smeared, but the episode was about like online smear
- 2:17campaigns and how we participate in them.
- 2:19And you know, the, at the time, the evidence that we had about
- 2:23Justin Baldoni's PR team specifically, I even indicated
- 2:27in that episode, like we have no idea if he was aware of some of
- 2:32these tactics and things that were said between his publicist.
- 2:35That episode was written and released literally.
- 2:37I mean, it was released like an hour before this, his lawsuit
- 2:41was made public. And I indicated that in the
- 2:44YouTube comments as well. So I apologize if you think I'm
- 2:47stupid now. And honestly, it like, genuinely
- 2:50hurt my feelings. But yes, so let's get into the
- 2:54updates. So like I said on Friday,
- 2:57literally a couple hours after we released that episode, it was
- 3:01made public that Justin Baldoni is suing Blake Lively and her
- 3:05husband Ryan Reynolds for defamation and extortion,
- 3:08seeking $400 million in damages, including loss of income.
- 3:13Quote, This is a case about two of the most powerful stars in
- 3:15the world deploying their enormous power to steal an
- 3:18entire film right out of the hands of its director and
- 3:21production studio, the suit says.
- 3:24Then, when Lively and Reynolds efforts failed to win them the
- 3:27acclaim they believed they so richly deserved, they turned
- 3:30their fury on their chosen scapegoat.
- 3:32This is something that I think I failed to mention in the deep
- 3:37dive, which is one of the I think less talked about elements
- 3:41of this legal battle is that Justin Baldoni has significantly
- 3:46less power like cultural capital influence power in Hollywood and
- 3:51in the public sphere, at least at the time then Blake obviously
- 3:55did and Ryan Reynolds and them as a couple.
- 3:57And that is something that you typically don't see, I guess, as
- 4:02far as we're aware of in these kind of like, celebrity smear
- 4:05campaigns, it typically is the person with more power, you
- 4:09know, who kind of has the upper hand and is helping push that
- 4:13narrative forward. OK, so this is definitely not
- 4:16everything, but some points from his filing.
- 4:19So Blake's claims that she was shown pornography and subjected
- 4:23to unwanted sexual discussions from Justin are false.
- 4:26The suit claims, quote, Lively was so close and comfortable
- 4:29with Baldoni that she freely breastfed in front of him during
- 4:32meetings, the suit says. The suit then claims that Blake
- 4:35took moments like this and recast them as sexual
- 4:38harassment. It also says that contrary to
- 4:41Blake's claims, every request she made for an intimacy
- 4:44coordinator was honored. In relation to the fat shaming
- 4:47allegations, Justin claims he has back problems, so he
- 4:50privately and politely asked Blake her weight so he could
- 4:52work with his trainer to be able to lift her safely.
- 4:56Ryan Reynolds then quote swore at Baldoni and accused him of
- 4:59fat shaming his wife. In Justin's complaint, he claims
- 5:03that Jake Blake sorry that Blake joked that he needs a nose job.
- 5:10The suit alleges that Ryan Reynolds was responsible for
- 5:13Justin being dropped by his talent agency WME, claiming he
- 5:17approached an executive and quote, expressed his deep
- 5:20disdain for Baldoni, suggesting the agency was working with a
- 5:23sexual predator. He claims Blake didn't read the
- 5:27book, which caused creative clashes.
- 5:30If that's true, that is so wild. But the part of the lawsuit that
- 5:34the Internet is absolutely running wild with is this text
- 5:39that Blake allegedly sent to Justin in which she refers to
- 5:42herself as Khaleesi from Game of Thrones and talks about Taylor
- 5:47Swift and Ryan Reynolds as her Dragons.
- 5:50So she allegedly wrote to Justin, quote, if you ever get
- 5:54around to watching Game of Thrones, you'll appreciate that
- 5:56I'm Khaleesi and like her, I happen to have a few Dragons,
- 6:01for better or worse, but usually better because my Dragons also
- 6:05protect those I fight for. So really, we all benefit from
- 6:08those gorgeous monsters of mine. You will too, I can promise you.
- 6:12That is unfortunately one of the most cringe things that I think
- 6:16we've ever seen come out of celebrity culture.
- 6:19I've seen so many people be like, you just know Taylor Swift
- 6:22is seething that this text got released and that she is being
- 6:28referred to as one of Blake Lively's Dragons.
- 6:31But yes, so that is again, like a high level recap of his suit
- 6:36against Blake. And again, I am very sorry if
- 6:39you felt like I was trying to sway you one way or another last
- 6:43week. Obviously, the episode
- 6:44specifically was about celebrity smear campaigns, and I was using
- 6:48what happened to Blake Lively back in like August as kind of a
- 6:52prime example of that. And that was related to like
- 6:57Internet culture. OK, The next story that I have
- 7:01for you guys is obviously we're going to talk about the TikTok
- 7:05ban, OK? So obviously we've been awaiting
- 7:08this TikTok ban. And it happened in the US.
- 7:12It did happen, but it was less than 24 hours.
- 7:15So Annabelle will cover this more in depth on Wednesday's
- 7:19tech update. But I wanted to share some
- 7:20thoughts from like a cultural perspective.
- 7:23I was on a bunch of TikTok lives all Sunday afternoon, just
- 7:26watching Americans get like wiped off the app, like their
- 7:29accounts just get taken down while they were on live.
- 7:31And it was really sad. And it was it was just it felt
- 7:34like eerie and creepy. They would be on live and then
- 7:38suddenly they would be gone, but their profile picture would just
- 7:41be kind of like where their face was and the chat would still be
- 7:44going. And people were saying the
- 7:45craziest stuff in the chat. Like people were writing like
- 7:48diva down or like Mama a legislation behind you, like the
- 7:54most insane stuff. And like it was funny, but it
- 7:57was also sad because a huge part of this whole TikTok ban and I
- 8:02think we can reflect on it now that it's back up.
- 8:04But like there was almost no communication from TikTok on how
- 8:09this would go down. So creators were kind of aware
- 8:14that they were going to be losing their jobs.
- 8:15Businesses that rely on TikTok were kind of aware that they
- 8:18would be using this massive, losing this massive influential
- 8:22platform. But there was so little
- 8:24communication around what that would look like and how that
- 8:27would go down South that I think felt a little bit unethical.
- 8:32To me, it felt a bit icky because the accounts, unlike I
- 8:36think what we originally thought, which was that they
- 8:38would just get deleted. Like American TikTok essentially
- 8:41would get deleted. And if it ever came back, they
- 8:43would have to start from scratch.
- 8:45So that was not the case, right? Their accounts all still
- 8:48existed. They were just locked out of
- 8:50them. And to me that felt very not
- 8:55worse because obviously I don't want anyone to lose their
- 8:57followers or anything like that, but it felt risky.
- 8:59I suppose it's probably the right word because in that case,
- 9:03you know, we as non Americans still had access to all their
- 9:06content, all their comment sections.
- 9:08We could still duet stitch, like engage with all of their
- 9:11content. But these creators, A, had
- 9:14probably very little way to know about what was going on on
- 9:17TikTok and B, no way to respond to that or like, moderate their
- 9:22comment section. And so if this ban had gone on
- 9:25longer, I think we would have seen some serious consequences
- 9:30of that with like, rumors, misinformation, all of these
- 9:33things. And, you know, things that could
- 9:35just spread like wildfire, whether it's about a specific
- 9:38creator or just specific information that starts going
- 9:41wild in these comment sections. And nobody can stop it because
- 9:45these accounts, they don't have access to them anymore.
- 9:47Obviously this didn't really end up being an issue because they
- 9:49were only locked out for, you know, such a short amount of
- 9:51time. But if this did last
- 9:54significantly longer, I think that this would have become a
- 9:56problem. Then there was the trend of
- 9:59creators revealing their like secrets before the app went
- 10:02dark. So I didn't really take a lot of
- 10:04these secrets that seriously. I don't know about you guys, but
- 10:07I feel like a lot of these secrets were kind of like
- 10:09satire. However, I suppose the through
- 10:12line with all of these secrets, I'm sure there's like a a shred
- 10:15of truth to all of them. And the through line was that
- 10:18creators are really not as authentic as they pretend to be.
- 10:22So there were a lot of creators claiming that they embellish or
- 10:25lie in their vlogs or their fitness videos or their mukbangs
- 10:29or whatever type of content they create.
- 10:31I think the most damaging was that a few big creators claimed
- 10:34that they lie about brand deals where they haven't even tried
- 10:38the product. And I think even though we all
- 10:40know there is an element of allusion to what we see online,
- 10:44I think hearing from these creators that they've sold us a
- 10:49lie, I don't know how there's going to be any coming back from
- 10:54that for them. I don't know.
- 10:56And when I say it, we all know that there's this element of
- 10:59illusion. I don't necessarily think that's
- 11:01a bad thing. Like for me, when I watch, I
- 11:03don't know, day in the life logs or morning routines or whatever,
- 11:06like I am seeking out the most unrealistic or aspirational ones
- 11:10because I want to use them as like inspiration.
- 11:14So I have something that I'm like striving for, if that makes
- 11:17sense. However, I am also so 33 years
- 11:20old and you know, I have had time and space to develop my
- 11:26sense of self and just understand my triggers and
- 11:30understand how to interact with online content in a way that is
- 11:34more healthy. But if I was consuming that type
- 11:36of content all throughout my teens and my 20s, I could not
- 11:39have handled it like that would just not have been the case.
- 11:42So I think there's several layers to the impact of like
- 11:46these confessions. It'll be interesting to see if,
- 11:49in general, audiences lose a lot of trust for specific
- 11:53influencers who claimed that they've been lying about things
- 11:56or if, you know, these creators have trouble working with
- 11:59different brands in the future and things like that.
- 12:01I think this was such a blip in the radar, at least for now.
- 12:05It's possible that we just kind of like, move on business as
- 12:08usual. But we will see.
- 12:10OK. The next story that I have for
- 12:12you guys is it seems like Trisha Paytas and Alex Kansani will be
- 12:15starring in a campaign together soon.
- 12:18So the creators were in the UK this week posting content
- 12:21together on a photo shoot in very big glam.
- 12:25Tricia tagged one of her videos quote models and everyone was
- 12:29like, Oh my God, what is this about?
- 12:31And now it seems like this photo shoot could have been for an
- 12:33upcoming Mac campaign as the official Mac Cosmetics TikTok
- 12:38account commented. I think this play is about us.
- 12:41And then Tricia liked it. So if you don't know who Alex
- 12:45is, she's a famous model and a huge tick tocker.
- 12:47With over 4.3 million followers, she's considered the world's
- 12:51youngest transgender model, starting her career at the age
- 12:54of 12. In 2024, she was also the first
- 12:57transgender model to walk in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.
- 13:01But in the digital space, she's just kind of like, I don't know
- 13:04if she's just like, an icon. Like, her content often goes
- 13:08viral. She started this trend in 2023.
- 13:11Just from, like, a really random funny video of her swirling this
- 13:15jug of water when she was, like, at a restaurant swirling the jug
- 13:18of water that they brought her and had a lemon in it.
- 13:20And her caption said, when they be giving me the fancy water.
- 13:25And she was like, dancing at the table.
- 13:26And everyone started recreating that.
- 13:29So people are really excited to see them together.
- 13:31People are really excited to see them getting possibly a big
- 13:35commercial campaign like Mac cosmetics.
- 13:37That would be so sick. And that would be pretty on
- 13:40brand for Mac. They're like usually quite on
- 13:41the pulse with that kind of stuff.
- 13:43At least they have been historically.
- 13:44OK. And the last story that I have
- 13:46for you guys, this is a trigger warning.
- 13:47I'm going to be talking about alleged child abuse.
- 13:51So TikTok influencer Australian TikTok influencer mummy vlogger
- 13:56Alana Harris has allegedly been arrested.
- 14:00So I covered the story a couple of months ago but at a high
- 14:03level. Australian mummy Blogger Alana
- 14:05Harris built a following of over 1,000,000 on TikTok for posting
- 14:09family content. A huge portion of her content
- 14:12centered around taking care of their one daughter, who they
- 14:15claimed her and her husband Brock claimed was very sick.
- 14:18In November, an anonymous whistleblower claimed that Alana
- 14:21was making their baby sick intentionally by drugging her.
- 14:25This was seemingly confirmed when Alana's husband Brock
- 14:28posted about it on his Snapchat, saying that he had no part in
- 14:32this. Now Alana has reportedly been
- 14:35arrested in Queensland. This is from the ABC quote.
- 14:37It is alleged between August and October last year the woman gave
- 14:41her daughter, who has a medical condition, medications which
- 14:44were not prescribed to her and without medical approval.
- 14:48She allegedly poisoned her daughter and recorded her
- 14:50physical and emotional suffering to illicit donations and is
- 14:53accused of defrauding donors of $60,000 via crowdfunding.
- 14:59This continues. She was charged with several
- 15:01offenses including multiple counts of administering poison
- 15:05with intent to harm and one count each of torture, making
- 15:09Child Exploitation material, and fraud.
- 15:12So that is an update on the Harris family.
- 15:14This is just such a tragic situation and another example of
- 15:18why children should not be allowed online.
- 15:22Family vlogging should legitimately be illegal.
- 15:25Anyways guys, that's it for mini scroll today.
- 15:27Thank you so much for listening. Please remember to rate, review
- 15:30and subscribe. We love you guys and I will talk
- 15:34to you tomorrow. Bye.
