- 1:21Speaker 2: for having me. My name is Joanne Black, poet Stephen.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I'm from Brooklyn, New York. You know how we do
- 1:26Speaker 2: over here. I've been writing poetry for like over twenty
- 1:32Speaker 2: something years right now, I don't want to tell my age,
- 1:34Speaker 2: you know, even though black don't crack.
- 1:36Speaker 3: But uh, poetry.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Is just my life. It's my lifestyle. It's what I do.
- 1:43Speaker 2: It's in my veins, and it's going to continue to
- 1:45Speaker 2: rob with me until this body get cold.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Hey, I love it.
- 1:49Speaker 3: I love it.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Well, thank you for kicking it with me today. Thank
- 1:52Speaker 1: you absolutely all right, We got the fella all right.
- 1:57Speaker 4: My name is j w Addaburry, John Washington in Addterbury.
- 2:00Speaker 4: I'm originally from Halem and I'm down here at the
- 2:04Speaker 4: Shore Cape, mangew Jersey, forty five minutes from Lake City.
- 2:07Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying.
- 2:08Speaker 4: I've been doing this poetry thing for a hot minute
- 2:11Speaker 4: since my New York days, you.
- 2:13Speaker 5: Know what I mean.
- 2:14Speaker 4: So just to give a timestamp, I'm fifty three years old,
- 2:18Speaker 4: you know what I mean. So I've been doing poetry,
- 2:21Speaker 4: vomit and all that since fifteen years old.
- 2:24Speaker 5: So I've been writing.
- 2:27Speaker 4: I got a nice collection of poetry books, so you know,
- 2:29Speaker 4: I love this poetry thing.
- 2:31Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying.
- 2:32Speaker 4: I'm the pin from within that's deep skin, you know
- 2:34Speaker 4: what I mean. So yeah, find yourself a friend, and
- 2:37Speaker 4: we all can begin.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I love it, y'all. Get ready for a great show.
- 2:43Speaker 1: The energy is here. We had the energy before the
- 2:46Speaker 1: camera started rolling, so you are in for a treat.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Before we get into all things poetry, I would like
- 2:52Speaker 1: to ask the question, because we talk about life, love
- 2:56Speaker 1: and all that other shit, what is one lesson that
- 2:59Speaker 1: you can say that life has taught you when it
- 3:01Speaker 1: comes to poetry.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Free yourself?
- 3:07Speaker 2: Oh I like that, Yes, And I say free yourself
- 3:12Speaker 2: because a lot of times we are so caught up
- 3:14Speaker 2: with thoughts, memories, traumas, and we stick with that and
- 3:18Speaker 2: we keep that inside. Well, when you start writing and
- 3:21Speaker 2: you release, you're a whole new different person by the
- 3:24Speaker 2: time all those words.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Hit that paper.
- 3:26Speaker 1: I love that. Free yourself, that's that's bars.
- 3:31Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 3:33Speaker 1: And what about you, sir?
- 3:35Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 3:35Speaker 4: My thing is let your mind and wine, so you
- 3:38Speaker 4: could sit back and recline.
- 3:39Speaker 5: And just let the sun shine. You know what I'm saying.
- 3:42Speaker 5: In outwit you know what I'm saying.
- 3:44Speaker 4: It's so good, And like Joyne said, just release yourself,
- 3:48Speaker 4: you know what I mean, Let all your thoughts hit
- 3:51Speaker 4: the paper and just be right there with it, in
- 3:54Speaker 4: and out, in and out, just like motion motion in
- 3:57Speaker 4: the ocean. You know what I'm saying, get yourself post worth.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Listen, I see somebody love words. I fell in love
- 4:06Speaker 1: with words at the age of three when my aunt
- 4:09Speaker 1: taught me how to read, and she would let us
- 4:10Speaker 1: go to the library pick out books that was appealing
- 4:13Speaker 1: to us. She didn't force anything on us, and I
- 4:18Speaker 1: just love words. And when I was introduced to poetry
- 4:21Speaker 1: in the third grade by my third grade teacher, shout
- 4:24Speaker 1: out to Miss Amma Williams, I will always love her
- 4:26Speaker 1: for that. I've just been in love with the flow.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Like you said, the elve and the flow. You get
- 4:31Speaker 1: the mix and match different textures, different tones, and just
- 4:35Speaker 1: are able to let your mind take hold of that
- 4:38Speaker 1: paper and then just express yourself. And I've always found
- 4:41Speaker 1: that my words helped inspire other people. And when I
- 4:46Speaker 1: was going through my darkest time, I was able to
- 4:49Speaker 1: go back to those notebooks that I had to actually
- 4:52Speaker 1: help myself get out of that darkness. So when it
- 4:55Speaker 1: comes to life, how has poetry been an impactful element
- 5:00Speaker 1: for you?
- 5:01Speaker 2: I know it's definitely been impactful for me, especially when
- 5:05Speaker 2: I have complete strangers come up to me and tell
- 5:08Speaker 2: me how they resonated with my words in the book
- 5:11Speaker 2: or you know, something that may have happened to them,
- 5:14Speaker 2: and they're like, you know, reading your book really showed
- 5:17Speaker 2: me a different way, a different element in life. And
- 5:20Speaker 2: that speaks volume for me because it's sometimes you know,
- 5:23Speaker 2: we write, Yes, we write for our sake, but we
- 5:26Speaker 2: also write for others. You know, we writing to change
- 5:29Speaker 2: the world, at least I know I am, you know,
- 5:31Speaker 2: because we're especially these days, we're caught up in a
- 5:35Speaker 2: world where so many people are walking around blind and
- 5:39Speaker 2: sometimes we need to read and see what's really going on.
- 5:43Speaker 2: They always say, you keep knowledge in the book, and
- 5:45Speaker 2: a lot of people won't read it, you know what
- 5:47Speaker 2: I mean. But at this rate, yeah, I write to inspire,
- 5:52Speaker 2: I write to elevate, and I write to educate, you know.
- 5:55Speaker 2: And like I said, I'm gonna just keep writing, writing
- 5:58Speaker 2: until I turn cold, because poetry to me, is bigger
- 6:02Speaker 2: than life.
- 6:03Speaker 1: Oh I love that, That's right.
- 6:07Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 6:08Speaker 1: How has poetry been impactful in your life?
- 6:13Speaker 5: Well, poetry, it came at the right time.
- 6:17Speaker 4: It resonated because I started writing again and my daughter
- 6:22Speaker 4: introduced me to just just going out.
- 6:25Speaker 5: There and just letting it live, let it breathe.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Especially after the divorce, you know what I mean, in
- 6:32Speaker 4: twenty sixteen. So you know, I just started just right
- 6:36Speaker 4: right watching everything around. It's like when the hermit goes
- 6:39Speaker 4: out there and he got the lantern and he's just
- 6:41Speaker 4: moving around, just observing the world.
- 6:44Speaker 5: So that's what I'm taking in.
- 6:46Speaker 4: I'm looking at everything out there, hearing conversations. My mom
- 6:51Speaker 4: started tworking and going back and forth, and I just
- 6:54Speaker 4: start writing, might not even be my personal experience, but
- 6:57Speaker 4: it might just be what I've seen, observe and heard,
- 7:00Speaker 4: you know what I mean. So and then when people
- 7:02Speaker 4: read it while I'm sharing on social media, they was like, yo,
- 7:07Speaker 4: you're writing, Like where you came with that from? And
- 7:10Speaker 4: I was like, just from what I see in the
- 7:12Speaker 4: world and on so personal experiences, I mean. So I
- 7:16Speaker 4: enjoyed sharing with everybody out there. You know, everything for everybody,
- 7:20Speaker 4: but everybody ain't for everybody, you know what I mean.
- 7:22Speaker 5: So, so, you.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Know, but I enjoy this thing, you know what I mean.
- 7:26Speaker 4: It's like it's like a Love Jones moment. You know,
- 7:30Speaker 4: I feel like I'm Darius all right, all right, you know,
- 7:36Speaker 4: look morning, evening, you know, afternoon, midnight, you know what
- 7:41Speaker 4: I mean, Everything with all four seasons, baby, all four seasons.
- 7:46Speaker 3: I love that.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I love that. I love that you embraced it and
- 7:49Speaker 1: a lot of us. I know, I'm forty seven, and
- 7:52Speaker 1: I allow my children to teach me about different phases
- 7:56Speaker 1: of life that they go through. A lot of people,
- 7:58Speaker 1: especially our parents age, were probably closed off to being
- 8:02Speaker 1: taught something new. So I try to get on my
- 8:04Speaker 1: mom all the time about learning something new. You're still here,
- 8:06Speaker 1: so you should still be learning every day, something every day.
- 8:11Speaker 1: So the fact that you allowed your daughter to pour
- 8:14Speaker 1: pour into you in that way to help elevate your
- 8:17Speaker 1: poeted game, that's amazing.
- 8:19Speaker 5: Yeah, she's a poet, Okay, I mean she learned from
- 8:22Speaker 5: a dad.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Yes, my daughter is a poet, and she's an artist.
- 8:26Speaker 1: And this is all of our artwork, you guys see.
- 8:28Speaker 5: Okay, that's that's what's up.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Yes, something might get a poet as well.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Nice, I'm gonna see. I'm gonna say, sixteen year old
- 8:37Speaker 1: got some bars. I'm gonna have to see what he
- 8:39Speaker 1: working with, because I know it's in him. He's into
- 8:42Speaker 1: more singing and stuff like that. But art is definitely
- 8:45Speaker 1: in this household for sure.
- 8:46Speaker 3: Right.
- 8:47Speaker 4: Yeah, my daughter's thirty three and when I so she
- 8:50Speaker 4: besides poetry, well she hasn't done a long time.
- 8:52Speaker 5: She does urban planning out there in Florida.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Nice, So she's an activist and when that so she's
- 8:59Speaker 4: out there court cases and stuff.
- 9:01Speaker 5: Like we the man all rights. Who you think you are?
- 9:03Speaker 5: We know our rights?
- 9:04Speaker 1: And lowis Yes, absolutely to her. Salute to her though,
- 9:10Speaker 1: because it takes a lot to put yourself out there
- 9:12Speaker 1: to be an activist, because we know the world that
- 9:15Speaker 1: we live in. Yes, I would keep her lifted in
- 9:17Speaker 1: prayer because we don't want any retaliation or anything like
- 9:20Speaker 1: that to happen. But yeah, I know that she is
- 9:23Speaker 1: probably walking in her purpose, something that got placed in her.
- 9:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I always do it mine.
- 9:28Speaker 4: I told her about only yok though, I mean she's
- 9:30Speaker 4: born down in Kate me though, you know, I mean,
- 9:31Speaker 4: but I always told her stories growing.
- 9:33Speaker 5: Up, like yo, I remember this, I remember that. You
- 9:37Speaker 5: know what I'm saying.
- 9:37Speaker 4: And I told her one of my teachers, poetry teachers,
- 9:39Speaker 4: was on Abbio done from the.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Last poets, Okay, nice, So I.
- 9:44Speaker 4: Always appreciate what he taught and brought to the table
- 9:47Speaker 4: when I was in high school.
- 9:48Speaker 5: I mean so right, yes.
- 9:52Speaker 1: So before we get into all that other ship. Let's talk.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Let's switch gears and talk about you guys, because I
- 9:58Speaker 1: know you have individual projects and stuff like that. Poor
- 10:01Speaker 1: you know, books and things like that, so join go
- 10:03Speaker 1: ahead and tell the people about your books, like plug
- 10:07Speaker 1: your work. Let them know how dope you are.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Thank you well.
- 10:12Speaker 2: My earlier work is on lulu dot com. The first
- 10:15Speaker 2: book I ever came out with was called Through My
- 10:17Speaker 2: Eyes by Joanne Stephen. And the second book I wrote
- 10:21Speaker 2: was The Insights of Black Poet that is also on.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Lulu dot com.
- 10:26Speaker 2: This third one right here, which I have with me,
- 10:29Speaker 2: is called let Me Lick Your Mind, and this is
- 10:32Speaker 2: on Amazon, and trust me, your mind will be licked.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Okay, I couple all categories. You know.
- 10:40Speaker 2: I don't hesitate, I don't discriminate everything is being talked
- 10:43Speaker 2: about in this book. I do have future projects. I
- 10:50Speaker 2: am revamping this book, you know, for a cleaner version,
- 10:54Speaker 2: and I'm working on another poetry book, and somewhere down
- 10:58Speaker 2: the line, I may also work their children's book.
- 11:01Speaker 3: So I'm very happy about that.
- 11:03Speaker 1: That's amazing, because hell, did you come up with let
- 11:09Speaker 1: Me Lick Your Mind? Okay?
- 11:11Speaker 2: You know what funny story I got to give a
- 11:13Speaker 2: shout out to Lloyd Blackstone.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Leach shot out the Lord.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Yes, I am a partner in crime.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I was going over some names though with the book,
- 11:23Speaker 2: and he just happened to say, what about let me
- 11:25Speaker 2: lick your mind?
- 11:26Speaker 3: And I was like, ooh, I.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Like that, Yeah, yeah, I like that, And you know
- 11:33Speaker 2: what he said it I ran with it.
- 11:35Speaker 3: You know, I can't even take credit for the name.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I got it from him, and I'm so happy he
- 11:40Speaker 2: laid it out to me because it draws a lot
- 11:42Speaker 2: of attention.
- 11:42Speaker 1: It really does, because he read like a snippet from
- 11:46Speaker 1: it a couple of weeks ago on his TikTok and
- 11:48Speaker 1: I was like, I gotta get this book. So I
- 11:51Speaker 1: would definitely be purchasing the book, and I thank you.
- 11:54Speaker 1: I'm all about supporting, especially my people, man, And this
- 11:57Speaker 1: is the whole premise of having the platform. I have
- 12:00Speaker 1: to give a voice and our and our stories need
- 12:04Speaker 1: to be shared for for for future generations, because once
- 12:08Speaker 1: it's out there is out there.
- 12:09Speaker 3: Absolutely people don't.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Know that we exist. They don't know that we need
- 12:13Speaker 1: to you know, the support from them, So that is
- 12:17Speaker 1: that's that's all about, Kiki. But I love that. I
- 12:20Speaker 1: love Levy, fix your mind. It is on Amazon, Guys,
- 12:24Speaker 1: and the nation about the book would be in the
- 12:27Speaker 1: show notes, So no excuses. Go and support black poet.
- 12:31Speaker 1: She is an awesome, awesome, awesome poet. Word smith. I
- 12:35Speaker 1: should say, yes, So we're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna
- 12:40Speaker 1: ask her to read something in a little bit. But
- 12:42Speaker 1: let's talk about your products. Uh, j W go ahead
- 12:45Speaker 1: and tell the people about what you got going on.
- 12:48Speaker 4: Oh man, it's I've been I've been doing this poetry
- 12:52Speaker 4: thing through many names, you know, in the beginning, which
- 12:57Speaker 4: the first book was by Joel Harris of their five
- 12:59Speaker 4: book the first one was Threw My Eyes from the Sky.
- 13:03Speaker 2: Uh.
- 13:03Speaker 4: The second one was threw My Eyes from the scar
- 13:05Speaker 4: Part two in God's Hands.
- 13:07Speaker 5: Then the next one was like Marvelous Misses Me.
- 13:09Speaker 4: And then I went through after that phase and was
- 13:13Speaker 4: the King Canterbury phase those books, and then I went
- 13:17Speaker 4: under Jeel Washington at Abury.
- 13:20Speaker 5: You know.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Yeah, everything was a metamorphosis, and I mean like it's
- 13:23Speaker 4: just into that on and this one.
- 13:25Speaker 5: King Cadbury Inc. This was what started a whole different wave.
- 13:30Speaker 4: You know, my cousin did to cover my little cousin
- 13:33Speaker 4: tried to show the support with them. And when I so,
- 13:36Speaker 4: after I start journeying through there and I started the
- 13:40Speaker 4: new wave when I so this is a book King
- 13:42Speaker 4: Canterbury Inc.
- 13:43Speaker 5: Part three, Fruitioning.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Oh I love that.
- 13:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:49Speaker 4: So I just started getting busy into it. And when
- 13:52Speaker 4: I like, I can't, I'm like a dope fiend. And
- 13:54Speaker 4: when I need that fix, you know what I mean
- 13:56Speaker 4: that you just start itching and you're like, Okay, let
- 13:59Speaker 4: me what else can I come like? And then I
- 14:01Speaker 4: just start flowing and going and what not. And I
- 14:04Speaker 4: have a couple of projects on the way. You know
- 14:07Speaker 4: this two thousand and twenty five is gonna be crazy,
- 14:11Speaker 4: working on four projects right now.
- 14:13Speaker 5: And you know I'm gonna be calling you up soon.
- 14:16Speaker 5: And I yo for I feel like I said, I
- 14:24Speaker 5: feel like a fiend. I can't stop.
- 14:26Speaker 4: I mean every year I say the same thing, I'm
- 14:28Speaker 4: not writing no more, feel like you know what I'm saying,
- 14:30Speaker 4: this poetry thing, like I'm done, you know what I mean.
- 14:32Speaker 4: Then all of a sudden, and then then I got
- 14:35Speaker 4: a whole archive. Then I'm like, what am I gonna do?
- 14:37Speaker 4: I might as well put some books out, Like I'm
- 14:39Speaker 4: just like.
- 14:40Speaker 5: Not to say it like that, but I'm just saying
- 14:42Speaker 5: I'll be like, you know.
- 14:42Speaker 4: What, my daughter be like, Damn, why you're gonna stop?
- 14:45Speaker 4: You might as well keep going. I'm like, because I
- 14:48Speaker 4: feel like when you have enough well to me, I'm
- 14:52Speaker 4: just like, okay, like.
- 14:53Speaker 5: What else can I write about?
- 14:54Speaker 4: Then there's always something I work great yeardship, So my
- 14:58Speaker 4: mom is always as soon as I hear music, I
- 15:01Speaker 4: just start.
- 15:01Speaker 5: It's like you activated.
- 15:04Speaker 4: It could be jazz, it could be water dripping, it
- 15:06Speaker 4: could be water running, and I'm just like.
- 15:09Speaker 5: I just start writing. I'm like, you got a.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Problems, A great problem to have.
- 15:15Speaker 5: I got. I need poetry, a taste poetry.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Any well, guess what, You'll see a lot of familiar
- 15:24Speaker 2: faces in that group because I jump out of my
- 15:26Speaker 2: sleep and start writing.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Listen my phone. I have a lot from my notes
- 15:31Speaker 1: on my phone. I have so much stuff, man, Listen.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Yeah, that's how I write. I write my phone when
- 15:37Speaker 4: walking the blue, I type something up or whatever. But
- 15:39Speaker 4: I'm always on the moves. They'll be like, oh, he texting. No,
- 15:42Speaker 4: I'm not texting them right.
- 15:43Speaker 5: Right, focused don't.
- 15:47Speaker 2: We're waiting on your poetry book to list inspired inspiring.
- 15:52Speaker 5: Me, give us what we need.
- 15:57Speaker 3: She got the lyrics we need to say him.
- 16:01Speaker 1: I think that that's gonna be my challenge for myself.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Before the end of the year, I will put out
- 16:07Speaker 1: my first poetry book.
- 16:08Speaker 5: I'll keep pushing.
- 16:10Speaker 2: If you need encouragement, I'll be right there to push
- 16:12Speaker 2: you along the way.
- 16:13Speaker 1: You know what, though, I'm a very disciplined person, and
- 16:15Speaker 1: when I say I'm a Capricorn, as we do. So
- 16:19Speaker 1: once I put my mind to it, I just have
- 16:21Speaker 1: to figure out what I want the theme of it
- 16:24Speaker 1: to be about, because I don't need to just be
- 16:26Speaker 1: putting stuff in there just all over the place, not
- 16:29Speaker 1: like that. But uh, I'm definitely. I'm definitely. I got time.
- 16:33Speaker 5: I got email you every week.
- 16:38Speaker 1: Listen. Look, I appreciate that accountability. That's what we need.
- 16:42Speaker 1: We need people that's gonna just pour into us and
- 16:45Speaker 1: make sure that we are staying aligned to our purpose.
- 16:48Speaker 3: Yes, love that.
- 16:50Speaker 1: So y'all want to y'all want to spit something for
- 16:52Speaker 1: for the audience. Y'all want to do something freestyle or
- 16:56Speaker 1: let's do that, Let's do that real quick style. I'm
- 17:00Speaker 1: give y'all the topic and we're gonna talk about all
- 17:02Speaker 1: that other ship.
- 17:07Speaker 2: Fifty two year old right here may not remember her lines,
- 17:11Speaker 2: but try, I'll try.
- 17:13Speaker 5: Let me.
- 17:14Speaker 1: Let me tell you and I and I picked all
- 17:17Speaker 1: that other ship because it's very broad and you can
- 17:19Speaker 1: talk about whatever. I mean. I could throw out a
- 17:22Speaker 1: word or something if you want to do it that way.
- 17:24Speaker 1: But I think all that other ship is befitting because
- 17:28Speaker 1: right now we are experiencing all that other ship when
- 17:31Speaker 1: it comes to life. Yeah, yeah, So anybody want to
- 17:36Speaker 1: go first?
- 17:38Speaker 3: You know what, I'll let the brother go first.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Can I get like a phrase or something, or like,
- 17:43Speaker 4: I just try to channel something. I have a freestyle
- 17:47Speaker 4: of a long time. But I'm gonna go there though
- 17:49Speaker 4: never a pardon me. I mean, just give me something
- 17:53Speaker 4: like so I could just you know.
- 17:56Speaker 5: Breathe on it.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Okay, So we'll talk about music.
- 18:00Speaker 3: I love music.
- 18:02Speaker 1: My favorite artist is Prince and his music has gotten
- 18:06Speaker 1: me through very very pivotal moments in my life, ups
- 18:10Speaker 1: and downs. So music, let's do music.
- 18:14Speaker 5: Okay, Let the music begin.
- 18:19Speaker 4: As my mind start to spend all these thoughts captured,
- 18:24Speaker 4: they're coming from out the wind. Is there a message
- 18:26Speaker 4: really to sind or am I just in between life circumstances.
- 18:31Speaker 4: Let's have a choice of the words that we put
- 18:34Speaker 4: inside the lines that define the pat graphs. That what
- 18:38Speaker 4: you see and is what you saw. This is something
- 18:41Speaker 4: unusual that you never saw before. But here, let me
- 18:45Speaker 4: go outside the universe into a different solar system so
- 18:48Speaker 4: I can sit right back down into Earth and be
- 18:50Speaker 4: in my kitchen. Oh my god, it seemed different. This
- 18:54Speaker 4: here is on the instant. This is a freestyle, not
- 18:57Speaker 4: really worthwhile, but I'm saying versatile. I could do it
- 19:00Speaker 4: right now, I could do it real later. At the
- 19:02Speaker 4: same time, you might owe me a favor. Why don't
- 19:04Speaker 4: you just contact your neighbor and we could see if
- 19:07Speaker 4: I Philip Beet, like I said, if I had a
- 19:09Speaker 4: pager like back inside the eighties or was it really
- 19:13Speaker 4: the nineties? But right now I'm gonna leave all that
- 19:15Speaker 4: stupid as shit behind me as into the future, and
- 19:19Speaker 4: I know what to do with her. I'm gonna call
- 19:21Speaker 4: up Mother Nature and signal out to for the time.
- 19:24Speaker 4: And that's that piece.
- 19:26Speaker 1: Nice n yes, oh good.
- 19:30Speaker 5: Kind of rusty and dusty.
- 19:31Speaker 1: But you know, listen, I can't tell it.
- 19:36Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Am I still going along the music trip? If you like, Hey,
- 19:47Speaker 2: the music, The music that just hits my veins, takes
- 19:52Speaker 2: away all my pains, you see from the struggles in
- 19:55Speaker 2: the strains. That music. You know you like it? That
- 19:59Speaker 2: music be hitting me like determinator. Have my body shaken
- 20:03Speaker 2: just like a vibrator?
- 20:04Speaker 3: Oops? Did I just say that? You know you like
- 20:07Speaker 3: that music?
- 20:08Speaker 2: That music that comes with the E string, the G
- 20:09Speaker 2: string and that d yes. Stick it to me. I
- 20:13Speaker 2: love it to flow naturally. Oh my god, that music
- 20:16Speaker 2: is getting to me. You see that music. It's detrimental,
- 20:22Speaker 2: but it's always in my mental You don't.
- 20:24Speaker 5: Know that, do you?
- 20:26Speaker 2: Or maybe you should find out hit me with that
- 20:28Speaker 2: music one more time. See what happens when I dropped
- 20:31Speaker 2: this line. Yeah, this is your black poet every time
- 20:34Speaker 2: for the music.
- 20:36Speaker 3: That's it.
- 20:40Speaker 1: You got listen. I'm over here blessing. I love it.
- 20:45Speaker 5: I love it.
- 20:47Speaker 1: Yes see, that's what I'm talking about, like for real, y'all.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Y'all really inspired me because I don't like to share
- 20:54Speaker 1: my portry with people. I love you do. I'm getting
- 20:59Speaker 1: I'm getting out of that shell. I'm walking into a
- 21:02Speaker 1: season in my life where it's like no regrets and
- 21:06Speaker 1: no excuses.
- 21:07Speaker 2: And nothing before its time. So maybe it wasn't time
- 21:12Speaker 2: for you to do it before, but it's your time.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Out, absolutely, and I agree. I received that and I
- 21:17Speaker 1: agree with that.
- 21:19Speaker 5: Do you hear that voice? You don't hear that voice?
- 21:23Speaker 5: Are you not? Are you not entertained?
- 21:28Speaker 1: Because I'm like which voice? Because I heard a lot
- 21:31Speaker 1: of them.
- 21:31Speaker 5: As a right, Are you not entertained?
- 21:36Speaker 1: Yes, I definitely hear the voice that saying that it's time.
- 21:39Speaker 1: I mean, my I just found out and I did
- 21:42Speaker 1: not notice although I knew he was nosy back then.
- 21:45Speaker 1: My little brother he told me the other night. He
- 21:47Speaker 1: just text me out of the blue. He said, I'm
- 21:49Speaker 1: so proud of you. You are my inspiration. And I
- 21:53Speaker 1: was like oh, and I was like, I've never known it.
- 21:55Speaker 1: He was like, yes, the sneak and reach of poetry
- 21:57Speaker 1: back in the day, and now he has released his
- 22:00Speaker 1: third poetry book. That so shout out to my little brother, Trevy.
- 22:05Speaker 3: I love you so much. Yeah, Tray.
- 22:10Speaker 1: So did you guys want to share anything from some
- 22:13Speaker 1: of your your work, your books? I know I need
- 22:15Speaker 1: to hear something from let me lick your mind for real.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Yes, I definitely have a few.
- 22:24Speaker 2: I'm trying to think what mood should I give it
- 22:27Speaker 2: to your end, you know, because there's a lot to
- 22:30Speaker 2: choose from.
- 22:32Speaker 3: I'm gonna start out with this.
- 22:34Speaker 2: This is the first one, and and if we have time,
- 22:36Speaker 2: we could dig into something else. This is the one
- 22:38Speaker 2: on the very first pages called the signs you put
- 22:43Speaker 2: on the spectacles.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Go ahead. I love it.
- 22:48Speaker 2: He had a winning smile and brought me diamonds and pearls.
- 22:52Speaker 2: I thought I was the happiest woman on top of
- 22:54Speaker 2: the world. He said, I did not need to work.
- 22:56Speaker 2: I could just stay home, keep myself beautiful and my
- 23:00Speaker 2: hair well combed to any woman. You think I had
- 23:03Speaker 2: missed the right until my world came crashing down in
- 23:06Speaker 2: just one night. Something big was happening after something so small.
- 23:10Speaker 2: He called me out of my name before slamming me
- 23:13Speaker 2: to a wall. I thought, what did I do? I
- 23:16Speaker 2: felt so ashamed. I tried to ask him what did
- 23:19Speaker 2: I do wrong? But I was the one to be blamed.
- 23:22Speaker 2: I tried to ask him what did I do wrong?
- 23:24Speaker 2: But no words can be heard like an instrumental song.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Another hit as anger feels his face. He was in
- 23:30Speaker 2: a bad mood and I was in his space. The
- 23:33Speaker 2: gentleman now turned a brutal beast. To say I was
- 23:36Speaker 2: scared was actually the least. It only got worse as
- 23:40Speaker 2: time went by, with swelling so bad they closed my
- 23:43Speaker 2: eyes and I apologie your flowers after every episode. But
- 23:47Speaker 2: the beatings continued to touch every limp node until one
- 23:51Speaker 2: day I fled for my life. As today I write
- 23:54Speaker 2: at someone's wife who literally helped me, as I hope
- 23:58Speaker 2: to help others. So listen to me clearly, my sisters
- 24:01Speaker 2: and brothers, when things go left, even when you think
- 24:04Speaker 2: things are fine, go with your gut feelings and pay
- 24:07Speaker 2: attention to the signs.
- 24:10Speaker 3: There you go.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Wow, Yes, absolutely, I would definitely be ordering that book
- 24:20Speaker 1: before this week is out. Thanks absolutely. Like I have,
- 24:25Speaker 1: I have a You know how people get addicted to
- 24:27Speaker 1: like shoes and all of that, I have addiction to
- 24:30Speaker 1: books and journals. Yeah a problem, yes, but I thank
- 24:40Speaker 1: you for sharing me. Before we before we hear your poetry,
- 24:43Speaker 1: I just want to ask the question about all that
- 24:45Speaker 1: other ship, like how has poetry helped you get through
- 24:48Speaker 1: all that other ship in your life?
- 24:52Speaker 3: Poetry for me was always a release.
- 24:54Speaker 2: You know, my dad, you know, God bless he's still alive,
- 24:59Speaker 2: was very strict, so I couldn't go anywhere.
- 25:02Speaker 3: So for me, it was a pastime.
- 25:05Speaker 5: You know.
- 25:05Speaker 2: I sat in the house, I wrote, and I drew.
- 25:08Speaker 2: So I'm also an artist. I love art and I
- 25:12Speaker 2: love poetry. And you know, as you get older and
- 25:17Speaker 2: you start seeing so many different things come to you,
- 25:19Speaker 2: Like Joel stated earlier, sometimes it's not from personal experiences only,
- 25:24Speaker 2: it's from what we see in life. It's from friends,
- 25:26Speaker 2: it's from family, and you just incorporated into your work.
- 25:31Speaker 2: And it definitely releases.
- 25:33Speaker 3: Me when I write. I feel a calm When I write.
- 25:36Speaker 2: I could be mad at something, but the moment my
- 25:39Speaker 2: pen hits the paper, I'm in another world. It's like
- 25:43Speaker 2: you can't talk to me. I'm just flowing and I
- 25:46Speaker 2: feel like ease. So it definitely helps me to remain
- 25:49Speaker 2: calm because I'm easily I used to be easily hot headed.
- 25:54Speaker 3: What is that?
- 25:55Speaker 2: Okay? You know, but as we grow in life and
- 26:00Speaker 2: we have growth, we learn how to channel things differently.
- 26:03Speaker 2: So for me, my channel will always be poetry.
- 26:08Speaker 1: I love it. I love it. Listen. Shout out to
- 26:15Speaker 1: Dad for being strict though, because who knows what you'd
- 26:17Speaker 1: have been getting into. It wouldn't have been perfect, I'm
- 26:20Speaker 1: telling you.
- 26:21Speaker 2: And to this day, he's still strict and I'm fifty
- 26:23Speaker 2: two years old.
- 26:25Speaker 3: But what I respect it.
- 26:28Speaker 2: I respect it because, you know, and I cherish it
- 26:31Speaker 2: because many people say, you know, cherish your parents because
- 26:34Speaker 2: you don't know how long you're going to have them,
- 26:36Speaker 2: and I'm blessed to say that I still have both.
- 26:39Speaker 3: You know.
- 26:41Speaker 2: It's sometimes it's trying because you're like, look here, now,
- 26:45Speaker 2: I'm grown with two kids.
- 26:48Speaker 3: That's still grown. But they don't always see you that way.
- 26:51Speaker 1: But he's gonna always beat a little baby that today.
- 26:55Speaker 2: Yes, and I'm the last one too, out of four,
- 26:58Speaker 2: so I'm.
- 26:59Speaker 3: All always the baby.
- 27:01Speaker 2: Yeah, But it's okay because a lot of his teachings
- 27:04Speaker 2: really saved me out here, you know, in this and
- 27:08Speaker 2: it's not even as bad as it is now, but
- 27:10Speaker 2: growing up, you know, he taught me some things were
- 27:13Speaker 2: always kept me level headed. You know, I'm not like
- 27:16Speaker 2: the average girl who gets scared of a little thing.
- 27:19Speaker 5: You know.
- 27:19Speaker 2: I let things, I think things through before I act right,
- 27:23Speaker 2: you know.
- 27:23Speaker 3: And I appreciate that greatly.
- 27:26Speaker 2: You know, those teachings, those back in the day's teachings
- 27:29Speaker 2: do help, and that's what a lot of these kids
- 27:32Speaker 2: are missing today.
- 27:32Speaker 3: They don't have that, thanks facts.
- 27:35Speaker 5: Yeah, well, poetry became an outlet for me.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Maybe I'll say, like maybe I lost my father when
- 27:44Speaker 4: I was in eighth grade junior high school.
- 27:47Speaker 5: You know, he passed away at the age of thirty two.
- 27:49Speaker 5: I was thirteen.
- 27:51Speaker 4: So after when I got in high school, I still
- 27:55Speaker 4: was trying to just gain acceptance.
- 27:57Speaker 5: Of like losing my dad, you know what I mean.
- 27:58Speaker 4: So I be on the terrace and my projects with
- 28:03Speaker 4: my own CLAWD table the radio, you know what I'm saying,
- 28:07Speaker 4: thinking I could write like some of the rappers, like
- 28:09Speaker 4: Ll and all of them. So but it was a
- 28:12Speaker 4: release for me when I you know what I'm saying.
- 28:13Speaker 4: So then I got in that window, you know, being
- 28:16Speaker 4: out on the projects and everything like that. And then
- 28:20Speaker 4: it became something else after my mother passed away, and
- 28:24Speaker 4: you know, then I had moved down to South Jersey.
- 28:26Speaker 4: I was twenty one. She passed away at age thirty nine.
- 28:28Speaker 4: So me living through life and just journeying out there,
- 28:34Speaker 4: writing and everything like that. You feel like you your
- 28:37Speaker 4: own parent now, even though Granny was around and stuff
- 28:40Speaker 4: like that. But I've always been a rebel, you know
- 28:42Speaker 4: what I mean. So that's one thing I got for
- 28:44Speaker 4: my mother about being a rebel. You you ain't said,
- 28:47Speaker 4: you ain't mad, you just existen. Yeah, it's like the
- 28:50Speaker 4: sun in the summertime. You just out there, you know
- 28:53Speaker 4: what I mean. So it has helped me a lot,
- 28:56Speaker 4: you know what I mean. So these are things that
- 28:58Speaker 4: I taught my daughter. I taught my son. You know,
- 29:01Speaker 4: they two years apart. So you know he can write
- 29:04Speaker 4: too and rong, but you know it just don't truths too.
- 29:07Speaker 4: But he's a Sagittarius. My daughter, my daughter is an arians.
- 29:13Speaker 4: So you know, watch being in between with them too.
- 29:16Speaker 4: It's like that that fire fire.
- 29:19Speaker 5: I'm like, yeah, I mean.
- 29:21Speaker 4: Be quiet, I'm trying to write something right now, you
- 29:23Speaker 4: know what I mean. Y'all don't understand. And grandparents are
- 29:26Speaker 4: still around, you wouldn't be acting like this. But then
- 29:29Speaker 4: I just opened up and be like, just look, I'm
- 29:31Speaker 4: not gonna tell you all again. I ain't gonna be
- 29:33Speaker 4: yelling at y'all, yo. But you know, just having that
- 29:36Speaker 4: energy within that entity, it just over the years is
- 29:40Speaker 4: just had me, you know, keep going and going and flowing.
- 29:44Speaker 4: And I'm glad to become who I am today, you
- 29:46Speaker 4: know what I mean, Like, you.
- 29:48Speaker 5: Know a cool a cool ass poet.
- 29:50Speaker 4: You know what I mean, I will say fly you
- 29:52Speaker 4: know what, man, I ain't ergant a cocky like that,
- 29:55Speaker 4: but I can hang with some of the best of them,
- 29:57Speaker 4: know you know.
- 29:58Speaker 1: What I mean, like to like pop your column.
- 30:02Speaker 4: Man, you know I'm cool, you know, just observe it.
- 30:10Speaker 5: So you know, we just be like playing until it's
- 30:13Speaker 5: time to jump on the stage. But come on, come, Onyan.
- 30:18Speaker 1: Here, I come. I'm about to shut it down.
- 30:22Speaker 4: Yeah, but you know I get inspired by others too,
- 30:25Speaker 4: like one of the people and poets that I might.
- 30:29Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying, I'm like, whoa.
- 30:32Speaker 4: It's called like step your game up and not competition wise,
- 30:34Speaker 4: just like yo, you got something there.
- 30:37Speaker 2: Yeah, he is being modest, Jersey poets.
- 30:42Speaker 3: This man wrote thirty books. He is being modest to say, Okay,
- 30:47Speaker 3: I know he is.
- 30:50Speaker 4: Yeah, but I'm just saying, you know, I just appreciate others,
- 30:53Speaker 4: and I think that's what keeps me humble and then
- 30:55Speaker 4: control of my feelings and emotions and not be like
- 30:58Speaker 4: some of these other people out here, you know what
- 30:59Speaker 4: I mean. Like, so when you have admiration for other
- 31:04Speaker 4: poets and stuff like that, it keeps you leveled and
- 31:07Speaker 4: balanced and here you know what I mean that you
- 31:09Speaker 4: like yo?
- 31:10Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying, Like.
- 31:12Speaker 4: We hit a try because I've seen some people out
- 31:15Speaker 4: there and they just they feel like this.
- 31:18Speaker 5: Can I curse?
- 31:19Speaker 3: Ye?
- 31:20Speaker 5: Can I be my Can I? Can I be my
- 31:23Speaker 5: New York self? Look? We feeling like they ship, and
- 31:27Speaker 5: I'll be like, that's a'll be something. Ain't nothing to
- 31:36Speaker 5: go bragging home to my friends about. Like you act
- 31:39Speaker 5: like you the ship but in your own world it's cool.
- 31:45Speaker 4: I'm from a parallel universe and an alternative one. Shit
- 31:48Speaker 4: ain't all that good, son? You know what I'm saying,
- 31:51Speaker 4: you might preach that ship And you know the one
- 31:53Speaker 4: thing I hate a cocky, arrogant person that just feels
- 31:58Speaker 4: like they touchable. I'm saying myself, Nigga, I write some
- 32:02Speaker 4: shit to spin your ass around and shit and send
- 32:05Speaker 4: you so with you know, I'm like Ricky say Rabbit.
- 32:08Speaker 1: Back in the day.
- 32:08Speaker 5: Uh yeah, I mean turn you into deputy dupalongs No.
- 32:15Speaker 5: But real think.
- 32:16Speaker 1: Though, I think that a lot of people they make,
- 32:19Speaker 1: they get confidence and cockiness and arrogance all mixed up.
- 32:25Speaker 5: Yes, yes, yes you can know.
- 32:27Speaker 1: That you have talent, but don't make it seem like
- 32:30Speaker 1: your talent is so for above everybody else's that nobody
- 32:34Speaker 1: exists with talent but yourself agreed.
- 32:38Speaker 5: That's why I said.
- 32:39Speaker 4: The humbleness Uh huh, that'll take you a lot of places.
- 32:43Speaker 4: I've learned that from a couple of poets from years ago,
- 32:46Speaker 4: you know what I mean. So I've always kept that
- 32:48Speaker 4: in mind, right, and I've always been cool with motivation speakers.
- 32:51Speaker 4: So that's why I was able to just humble myself
- 32:53Speaker 4: and be, like he said, Yo, just check the parameter's
- 32:55Speaker 4: kid and you'll see what's up. And I did, and
- 32:58Speaker 4: that's how I evolved better over the years and what
- 33:01Speaker 4: I was like.
- 33:01Speaker 5: And I still talk to the dude today. You know
- 33:04Speaker 5: what I'm saying. One of my brethren is from Brooklyn.
- 33:06Speaker 5: When I you know what I'm saying, I'm just.
- 33:07Speaker 4: Like, now I know what he's talking about me, so yeah,
- 33:12Speaker 4: so yeah, But like I said, I'm here today.
- 33:15Speaker 5: But I got a poem right now called Fruits of Love.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Like that too.
- 33:23Speaker 5: I like it too, but doesn't make sense. I'm just
- 33:27Speaker 5: messing up, all right, all right here it is Fruits
- 33:32Speaker 5: of Love fell in love with loving. All that I
- 33:36Speaker 5: know is it about or could it be a lie
- 33:40Speaker 5: disguised behind my eyes? Doesn't matter. I'll take a chance
- 33:44Speaker 5: and dance a little.
- 33:45Speaker 4: Bit when I'm into just to remember I have options
- 33:49Speaker 4: to exit, never long winded or having fatigue of her
- 33:54Speaker 4: with me. The astronomical energy is beyond us human beings.
- 34:00Speaker 4: The earth taught me well though I lost my father's time,
- 34:04Speaker 4: she told.
- 34:04Speaker 5: Me fly away on my own.
- 34:06Speaker 4: Recognize the signs, stay close to God who God write
- 34:10Speaker 4: ways of passage. Don't ever become ecstatic or feel you
- 34:15Speaker 4: got to have it, wait for it come, be careful
- 34:19Speaker 4: whenever it comes. Sometimes adulthood can be fun, but don't
- 34:23Speaker 4: stay forever young. The experience can be serious disappointment. Have

- 38:07Speaker 2: If you want to sink, do it. If you want
- 38:09Speaker 2: to paint, do it. But whatever gift that God has
- 38:12Speaker 2: given to you, don't die with it.
- 38:15Speaker 5: Oh shay shave.

- 38:27Speaker 1: I felt that in my spirit.
- 38:29Speaker 4: Okay, Well I say is never be afraid to put
- 38:35Speaker 4: your pen down. Never be afraid to express yourself. You know,
- 38:39Speaker 4: there's no such thing as a whack poet. There's no
- 38:43Speaker 4: such thing as poor expression because we come from the heart.
- 38:47Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying.

- 38:55Speaker 4: just start putting journalinge, just start putting them them words
- 38:59Speaker 4: and every thin' don't have to round me, but just
- 39:01Speaker 4: write it out.

- 39:04Speaker 5: I mean. So let that be your love your love cycle,

- 39:36Speaker 1: for a reason and if you don't tap into those gifts,
- 39:38Speaker 1: you will lose those gifts. And whether it's writing or
- 39:41Speaker 1: doing whatever, you are enough. It is your gift. Stop
- 39:45Speaker 1: letting people get in your ear and tell you that
- 39:47Speaker 1: you are not enough, because that is a lie. So
- 39:51Speaker 1: with that being said, next time, purple hugs later. Bye,
