Latest / Mount Eaton Church / Love His Word: Delight In His Word… - Psalm 119
Transcript
- 0:09So Psalm 119 is where we're going to be sitting
- 0:11for all of our service today. I'll have one verse
- 0:16from Deuteronomy. If you ever get a chance, like
- 0:20Psalm 119 is all about the Word of God. Like
- 0:24why would God dedicate... one entire psalm, and
- 0:30it's 174 verses to the word, it's because it
- 0:34is crucial. It's the one psalm that was given
- 0:39for parents to teach their kids the Hebrew alphabet.
- 0:44So when you see, when they would read Psalm 119
- 0:49verses 1 through 8, and each letter has eight
- 0:52verses, each of those verses would start with
- 0:56the letter of the alphabet, Aleph. So we, in
- 1:00English, you know, kind of like English isn't
- 1:02great when it comes to translation. So I wish
- 1:05we had a rhyme and we could sing them with that,
- 1:08but we don't. So I want us to really pay attention
- 1:10to the importance of the word of God. As you
- 1:13know, we are on a mission to really talk about
- 1:17our purpose as a church. Why does God have us
- 1:20as a church? Why has God brought you into his
- 1:23family? Why does God do anything? Well, it's
- 1:25for his glory. But he calls us, commands us,
- 1:29and causes us. Calls, commands, and calls. C
- 1:33-A -U -S -E. Causes, commands, and calls us to
- 1:39love him. So we are going to love God, love his
- 1:42word, love his ways, love his things. And that
- 1:44is really looking at the reality of the broadness
- 1:47of the Christian life, what we're to be doing.
- 1:50So we talked about loving God, and we talked
- 1:52about loving God last week from the perspective
- 1:53of where our treasure is. And that expression
- 1:56of that treasure is the least value of the thing
- 1:59that you have. We talked about that money really
- 2:02has no real true intrinsic value in reality.
- 2:06You are born without it. You die without it.
- 2:09There is nothing within reality of money. But
- 2:12why do we hold on to it so tightly and not willing
- 2:16to give it away? So we deal with that issue last
- 2:20week. Now we're going to talk about loving his
- 2:21word because we can't really learn to give away
- 2:25our treasure until we understand God and his
- 2:28character and what he commands for us and the
- 2:32ways that we should live. So he tells us those
- 2:35things through his word. Love his word. Delight
- 2:38in his word. It is impossible to know God unless
- 2:42he has been pleased to make himself known to
- 2:46man. I want you to think about that. So if God
- 2:50had created all of us, which he has, placed us
- 2:54on the earth, the only reason why you know about
- 2:57him is because he was pleased to tell you about
- 3:00himself. God didn't have to say a single word
- 3:04to you about who he was. He could let us as ants
- 3:07just live our lives and die and not even think
- 3:11about us. But that's not what God intended for
- 3:14us to be when he communes. So it's impossible
- 3:18to know God unless he has been pleased to make
- 3:22himself known to man. He recognizes the force
- 3:25of Zophar's question in Job 11 .7. Can you, by
- 3:31searching, find out God? Can you, in your own
- 3:36purpose, drive, ever really find out God by your
- 3:42own desire? It seems utterly impossible to him
- 3:46that man, by his unaided reason, should discover
- 3:51God, and he therefore considers the question,
- 3:54has God spoken? Numbers 23, 19. As one of the
- 4:00utmost importance. Lewis Berkhoff, 1942. Really?
- 4:06Why does man seek God? Because God was pleased
- 4:11to reveal himself. Why would man, after God is
- 4:15pleased to reveal himself, even have the desire
- 4:18to go and seek after him because God has placed
- 4:21it there? What is the Word of God? There are
- 4:25many answers that I could give that would describe
- 4:30biblically and scripturally what the Word of
- 4:33God is, really well for itself in its own definition.
- 4:40And he clarifies this definition pretty revealing
- 4:44throughout the scripture of what his word is.
- 4:48So we're going to answer that question. The revealing
- 4:52of God by inspiration given through men as he
- 4:56led them to accurately record and communicate
- 4:59his character and message is known as inspiration
- 5:04of scripture. and the revealing of God in his
- 5:08incarnation through the virgin birth by the power
- 5:11of the Holy Spirit, he is called the Logos, known
- 5:15as the living word. 2 Timothy 3 .16, John 1 .1.
- 5:21The word of God is living and active, sharper
- 5:24than a two -edged sword, piercing to the division
- 5:27of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow,
- 5:30and discerning the thoughts and intentions of
- 5:32the heart. Hebrews 4. The word is the sustainer
- 5:38and giver of life. The very word of God sustains
- 5:44you and gives you life. Matthew 4, 4. But he
- 5:48answered, it is written, man shall not live but
- 5:51by bread alone, but by every word that comes
- 5:54from the mouth of God. Psalm 119, 93. I will
- 5:58never forget your precepts, for by them you have
- 6:02given me. So what is the word of God? Jesus the
- 6:09Christ. He is the word of God. And he was pleased
- 6:14to put his character and his message on display
- 6:19for us to read and to know him. And it's only
- 6:23enough for life and godliness. All the answers
- 6:27that you will ever desire to be answered by God,
- 6:30not all of them, are written. Example, the Trinity.
- 6:37Is there anything in all of Scripture, in all
- 6:42of creation, that can clearly give us a full
- 6:45understanding of the triune, the triuneness of
- 6:49God? That God in his wisdom as Yahweh Elohim
- 6:53has represented himself as the three in one,
- 6:58the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Knowing
- 7:02that the only way to fulfill the promise he made
- 7:07to Adam and Eve when he cursed the snake, I will
- 7:11put an enmity between you and the woman, between
- 7:13your seed and her seed, could only come by the
- 7:16God -man himself. That the purpose of the triune
- 7:20God in his wisdom and in his foreknowledge That
- 7:24through the very plan of the Father, the fulfillment
- 7:27in the Son, and the guarantee of the Holy Spirit,
- 7:30that salvation is an impossibility without the
- 7:34Trinity of God. How would we know that? Ephesians
- 7:381. Because the Word of God tells us so. You cannot
- 7:42have salvation without the Father planning it.
- 7:46You cannot have the fullness of salvation without
- 7:49the Son fulfilling it. And you can't have the
- 7:52guarantee of your inheritance without the Holy
- 7:53Spirit being your guarantee as a deposit. It's
- 7:57an impossibility. That's the importance of the
- 8:00Trinity. To go any further than that, I would
- 8:04really do it in injustice to try to explain why
- 8:09God is triune. but communion. God has caused
- 8:14and commands us to love his word. John 14, 15
- 8:18said this to you last week. If you love me, you
- 8:21will keep my commandments. Psalm 119, 97. Oh,
- 8:28how I love your law. It is my meditation all
- 8:32the day. Do you love God's word where you are
- 8:36willing to drive in your car, sit in your house?
- 8:41And just listen to the word of God spoken to
- 8:43you. Go home when you have the time. Sit down
- 8:46and open it and read it and let him speak to
- 8:49you. Are you willing to listen to his word through
- 8:52the music that he's provided? Are you saturating
- 8:55your life with the logos? Or is Christian life
- 9:00just a means to an end where you can come and
- 9:03do your ritual responsibility on a Sunday morning
- 9:06and say, I've done my job. Listen to this psalmist
- 9:12says, oh, how I love your law. It is my meditation
- 9:17all the day. It's all he thinks about. You'd
- 9:22be like, that's a little crazy. That man doesn't
- 9:26get involved with the craziness that's going
- 9:28on in our world today because his mind is where
- 9:31it needs to be. Set your mind on things above,
- 9:34not on things of the earth. Oh, Psalm 119, 113.
- 9:41I hate the double -minded, but I love your law.
- 9:45I hate those who are wavering all the time, that
- 9:49never really can make a final decision. They
- 9:53just one minute here, next minute there. Why?
- 9:55Because they have nothing to stand on. There
- 9:57is nothing that their feet is steady on. But
- 10:01this man loves God's law. Psalm 119, verse 119.
- 10:11Therefore, I love your testimonies. I love your
- 10:15testimonies. I love your words. Psalm 119 verse
- 10:1932, I will run in the way of your commandments
- 10:23when you enlarge my heart. God is busy sanctifying
- 10:28and enlarging your heart and your love for his
- 10:30word. Do you hunger and thirst for his word?
- 10:33As a deer pants after the water, so my soul longs
- 10:38after you. God commands us to obey his word.
- 10:431 John 2, 4 -6. Whoever says I know him but does
- 10:47not keep his commandments is a liar and the truth
- 10:49is not in him. But whoever keeps his word, in
- 10:53him truly the love of God is perfected. By this
- 10:56we may know that we are in him. Whoever says
- 11:00he abides in him ought to walk in the same way
- 11:03in which he walked. Do we live like the Logos?
- 11:09Psalm 119, verse 1 through 4. Blessed are those
- 11:12whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of
- 11:16the Lord. Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,
- 11:19who seek him with their whole heart, who also
- 11:24do no wrong, but walk in his ways. You have commanded
- 11:30your precepts to be kept diligently. You hear
- 11:35that? Not an option. Psalm 119 verse 44 through
- 11:4045. I will keep your law continually forever
- 11:43and ever and I shall walk in a wide place for
- 11:48I sought your precepts. Now I want you to get
- 11:51that. For those of us who walk according to the
- 11:54law and the word of God, we have a broadness
- 11:58to our ability to live within the confines of
- 12:02the world that he's placed us in. I'm not confined
- 12:05to the way of the world. Where Christ is in my
- 12:09life, I have the freedom now to go outside of
- 12:12that and to touch and to preach and to teach
- 12:15and to walk with and to love and to serve those
- 12:18outside of that little narrow way. Which in reality,
- 12:25that little narrow way that the world says is
- 12:28narrow because it's their way or the highway.
- 12:31God's way is... Really, narrower, if that's a
- 12:36word. My English is terrible, so I don't really
- 12:39care. But my ability to live outside of the lines
- 12:44is much more greater. You have any questions
- 12:48about that? Look at Jesus' life. What did he
- 12:51do? Hey, Matt, I'm going to your house to have
- 12:55dinner. I'm a tax collector. Hey, don't stop
- 12:59her from anointing my head. What? She's a prostitute.
- 13:03Writes in the sand. He who is without sin cast
- 13:06the first stone. Where are your accusers? Then
- 13:09neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.
- 13:12That's a really broad way of living, don't you
- 13:15think? Why? Because he lives narrow. He lives
- 13:19according to the word. Because he lives here,
- 13:22he can serve here. That's the idea here. I shall
- 13:26walk in a wide place, for I have sought your...
- 13:31God commands us to teach his word. Colossians
- 13:353 .16, let the word of Christ dwell in you richly,
- 13:37teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom,
- 13:41singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs
- 13:43and with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
- 13:46Do you see that? That not only are we teaching
- 13:48and preaching, we are teaching and preaching
- 13:50through music. Every opportunity we have. By
- 13:55every means that God has provided, we can teach
- 13:58and preach and richly bless those who need to
- 14:02hear the word of God. Psalm 119, verse 13. This
- 14:06is the only verse outside of Psalm 119 I told
- 14:13you I was going to give you. Well, that's not
- 14:15true. I gave you some Johns and stuff, but this
- 14:17is specifically one that I'm using. Deuteronomy
- 14:216, 4 through 9. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our
- 14:25God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord
- 14:29your God with all your heart and with all your
- 14:30soul and with all your might. And these words
- 14:33that I command to you today shall be on your
- 14:36heart. You shall teach them diligently. You shall
- 14:40teach them diligently. You shall teach them diligently
- 14:44to your children. and shall talk with them when
- 14:49you sit in your house and when you walk by the
- 14:51way and when you lie down and when you rise.
- 14:54You shall bind them as signs on your forehead,
- 14:57on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets
- 15:01between your eyes, and you shall write them on
- 15:04the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
- 15:07Can you imagine that? Where you walk into someone's
- 15:10house and the only thing that you see is Scripture
- 15:12everywhere. I want you to notice something here.
- 15:17I think this is one of the things that parents
- 15:18have a difficult time understanding. You don't
- 15:22schedule time teaching your kids. You teach your
- 15:26kids throughout the day. You teach them when
- 15:28you're sitting in your house. You teach them
- 15:30when you're walking down the road. You teach
- 15:32them when they go to bed and when they get back
- 15:34up. You teach them when you go to Walmart or
- 15:37Weiss. You teach them about Christ everywhere.
- 15:41It's not just, you know, hey, I'm going to schedule
- 15:44my time with you today. It's in your daily walk
- 15:48and driving that you talk about Jesus all the
- 15:52time. That doesn't mean that you don't set apart
- 15:55time for family worship or family reading. That's
- 15:59okay too. But notice it says here, when you lie
- 16:04down and when you sit and when you walk and when
- 16:06you rise. It's in your everyday moment. Give
- 16:17Christ richly in their lives. Do you delight
- 16:21in God's word? How important is God's word to
- 16:25you? Psalm 119, verse 14 and 16. In the way of
- 16:30your testimonies, I delight as much as in all
- 16:34riches. Verse 16, I will delight in your statutes.
- 16:39I will not forget your word. Verse 20. My soul
- 16:44is consumed with longing for your rules at all
- 16:48times. Verse 24, your testimonies are my delight.
- 16:54They are my counselors. 34, give me understanding
- 17:00that I may keep your law and observe it with
- 17:03all my whole heart. Verse 35, lead me in the
- 17:11path of your commandments for I delight in it.
- 17:15Verse 47, I'll read verse 46 first. I will also
- 17:21speak of your testimonies before kings and shall
- 17:24not be put to shame for I find my delight in
- 17:28your commandments which I love. Verse 77, let
- 17:34your mercy come to me. That I may live for your
- 17:39law is my delight. Verse 89. Forever, O Lord,
- 17:45your word is firmly fixed in the heavens. Verse
- 17:4992. In your law, if your law had not been my
- 17:54delight, I would have perished in my affliction.
- 17:58Verse 143. Trouble and anguish have found me
- 18:02out, but your commandments are my. delight. Even
- 18:06he has to continue to walk in the commandments
- 18:09of God. Why? Because your sin will find you out.
- 18:14And the only way he gets through his sin is the
- 18:17fact that he delights in the word of God. Do
- 18:20you see that? Delight in the word of God and
- 18:23you will live. I rise before dawn and cry for
- 18:26help. I hope in your words. That's 147 and 174.
- 18:34I long for your salvation, O Lord, for your law
- 18:38is my delight. Do you get the point? How important
- 18:43is the word of God to you? Or do you just let
- 18:45it go throughout your days and weeks or months
- 18:50and it really has no means to you? Your very
- 18:54existence, you live because God says you do.
- 18:58Psalm 119 verse 151 and 152. I want you to hear
- 19:03these last few verses. But you are near, O Lord,
- 19:09and all your commandments are true. Hear that?
- 19:14This is true. Fox News is not true. CNN, not
- 19:21true. MSNBC, not true. What's true? God's word
- 19:26is true. It has always been true. They can say
- 19:28whatever they want to say. It's not true. There's
- 19:31only one thing that's true. It's called the word
- 19:33of God. We live in the days of lies. Walk in
- 19:40his truth. So you can see the lie. Psalm 119
- 19:45verse 60. Let me keep reading. I'm sorry, I forgot.
- 19:49152, I forgot. Long have I known your testimonies
- 19:54that you have founded them forever. Do you know
- 19:58why God's word is true? Because it is everlasting.
- 20:02Psalm 119, 116. The sum of your word is truth.
- 20:08And every one of your righteous rules endures
- 20:13forever. The world's going to tell you this isn't
- 20:16true. It doesn't matter. I really don't care
- 20:20what they say. I know it's true. I'm a listening
- 20:23testimony of his truth. He's changed my life.
- 20:27If you knew what I was before you ever knew me
- 20:29here, I was a dog. Men are dogs. I was a dog,
- 20:36man. Thank God I'm not no more. You got an entire
- 20:40room full of testimonies of God's word. active
- 20:45in their lives where Christ has used his word
- 20:48to instill, deposit, and grow faith. The sum
- 20:53of your word is truth, and every one of your
- 20:56righteous rules endures forever. Psalm 119 verse
- 21:00172. My tongue will sing of your word, for all
- 21:07your commandments are right. I'm sharing these
- 21:12things with you. So that you love his word. When
- 21:16you love his word, you will obey his word. When
- 21:19you obey his word, there is nothing you won't
- 21:22do to honor and please him. You won't listen
- 21:25to those around you who listen to his word because
- 21:28his word is true. His word is life. You won't
- 21:31be paying attention to the narratives and the
- 21:36nonsense because the word of God is true. It
- 21:39is life. I'm so glad that we talked about this
- 21:43today. I think we live in such a rich, overwhelming
- 21:49time where all the information that you could
- 21:54ever want and desire is at your fingertips, literally.
- 21:58And the one place we don't go to, because we
- 22:01know it's true, at least we hope, is His Word.
- 22:05I'd rather listen to the morning show for truth.
- 22:10And every day, we're disappointed. It's sad,
- 22:15but I should have expected it, right? That justice
- 22:19for the children who have been mistreated, abused,
- 22:25neglected, sold, will one day come under the
- 22:31wrath of a mighty God. Because the malarkey that
- 22:35we're being fed today, how do I know that? Scripture
- 22:39says, Vince's mind says, Lord, I will repay.
- 22:43Every evil deed that man covers, God will expose
- 22:49on his day. On his day. Because God is true.
- 22:54We must be different. We must shine differently.
- 22:58We must be different than any movement. We must
- 23:02be different. We must be a light on a hill. A
- 23:06shining city on a hill. We must not put our light
- 23:10under a bowl. We must walk. In the word. Thy
- 23:15word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto
- 23:22my path. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and
- 23:32a light unto my path. Father, I want to thank
- 23:39you so much that your word is true. It has been
- 23:44established forever that you have, as the Logos,
- 23:49have put on flesh and have shown us the word
- 23:54in action, in living. And then in your wisdom,
- 23:59through thousands of years, through 40 men, 66
- 24:04books, you have given us your... canon, your
- 24:07word, that declares and proclaims the goodness
- 24:10of our God, the fulfillment of his promise in
- 24:13the redemption of mankind through the Son. We
- 24:17praise you and thank you. And we are reminded
- 24:20in the same way that Jesus had mentioned to the
- 24:23men on the road to Emmaus, have you not read
- 24:25all that Moses and the prophets have said about
- 24:31me? We thank you that you are the living To you
- 24:38be honor and glory. And may we read the inspired
- 24:42word to see our God and to know you better. In
- 24:46Jesus' name, amen.
