Substitute means a person or thing that takes the place of another. As a verb, it means to use one thing instead of another.
Technology often acts as a substitute for other people by handling tasks, conversations, decisions, or services that used to require a human.
Human replacement” is not one event. It is a spectrum: machines doing tasks people used to do, machines standing in for relationships, machines making judgments that used to belong to a person, and—at the extreme—the idea that humans themselves might someday be optional.
