Transcript
- 0:00[SPEAKER_00]: Well yeeah!
- 0:01[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody, welcome back to the Grey Malkin Lane podcast in April where we are celebrating all things Cowboys, especially the gay Cowboys.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: And one of them is the character Calico.
- 0:13[SPEAKER_00]: I am thrilled to have two fifths of one homo superior joining me for today's episode.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_00]: My friends Ryan and Adam are here with me.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_00]: Adam, I've been typing up Captain Britain scripts for our next read and Captain America in it.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: All I can hear is your Leslie Jordan voice now.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_02]: And he, I don't know what you're talking about.
- 0:31[SPEAKER_00]: He bursts in the red skull in one scene and he goes, I found you could, and I'm just like, oh my God, I'm just like, you've ruined an emphasized Captain America for it, I'm here for me.
- 0:43[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome back to the show, my friend.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: If you'd like to introduce yourself first, tell everybody a little about your connection to cowboy genre, cowboy westerns.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god.
- 0:53[SPEAKER_02]: The way gay bars weren't ever that fits for you.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_02]: I've been to flaming saddles in New York.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_02]: That's about probably the extent of my cowboy experience.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_02]: I'm Adam Kusari, I'm from D.C.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_02]: I'm on part of homeless superior podcast along with Ryan.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, I will say there used to be a really good.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_02]: I think it was called Sunset Guns or something.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_02]: It was like a really great site scrolling action beat them up.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_02]: Like you know, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_02]: Like though it was old school.
- 1:17[SPEAKER_02]: That's like really the extent of my cowboyism.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not a big western.
- 1:21[SPEAKER_02]: But I do love gay horse women, so I'm really happy to be part of this podcast today.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_01]: And let me also welcome Ryan Crowe back.
- 1:29[SPEAKER_01]: So happy to be here and talking about horse forms today.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_01]: I've been looking forward to this for a long time.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_01]: In terms of Mike Sposier to Cowboys, no one's ever asked me that question, but
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: I guess I would say an initial thought I don't really have too much exposure, but I am thinking back to the first cowboy bar that I went to.
- 1:53[SPEAKER_01]: This was like before I was out, and it was a big old cowboy bar in Florida, and this was the first time, it was called like, y'all get the round-up or something, I don't know, it's out of business town, it's no longer there, but
- 2:07[SPEAKER_01]: It's um, this was the first time a guy hit on me and it was before I was out and before I knew anything like that and I was like what you would think I was gay, but that was my first like cowboy experience and it just came to me just now, which is kind of crazy.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: There's so much more to cowboy genre and western genre than people realize.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: So I grew up in a I grew up in Hillbilly Country in Missouri, which is Wild Wild West, right?
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: Like near my hometown was a place called Branson, Missouri, which is known as one of the country western capitals.
- 2:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's basically like Vegas if you're like an old Republican.
- 2:43[SPEAKER_02]: I went there.
- 2:44[SPEAKER_02]: My cousins live in Missouri and we went like when I was a kid and it was exactly as they described.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: And not my favorite place, but uh there's a there's a theme park there, like a little small town theme park called Silver Dollar City where I used to go every summer as a kid.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: And all the rides were cowboy theme fire.
- 2:59[SPEAKER_00]: in the whole, you know, like it was all, it was all themed, it's kind of like the poor man's dolly would.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: Then I moved to Idaho as a teen, which Idaho and Utah's where I live now, tons of cowboy stuff out here with the Mormons and the the assassin squads and the mountain metal massacres and the polygamy and the women and petty coats in pioneers with hand cards, right?
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: Like there's so much Western genre in my life that's weird to realize.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_00]: As a teenager, my family reunion with my grandparents would always be in like Wyoming or Montana and we'd go see live country Western with a with a real life fiddler, you know, like that kind of stuff like it's a it's a big part of my youth and in an odd way.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: So we're ending the show on an April with the trial of the raw hide kid, which is what is inspiring all of this content, but outside of Calico, who are some of your Western themed characters in the X men that you love and there are more than you think.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_01]: I really enjoy Outlaw, which she might be mentioned in this episode, but I do like that character, I think also.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: Two weeks before this episode is an episode on Outlaw, so it's, yeah, I love her.
- 4:06[SPEAKER_00]: I know, very much.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_02]: This is where I have to proclaim my ignorance, especially in the Western world of Marvel, because I have no, I'm sure if you could rattle off 10 names, which I'm sure you're going to, and I'm going to go, oh yeah, okay, that one, right, that one, it's not.
- 4:20[SPEAKER_00]: There are some that are very specific.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_00]: There's some that you almost want to think like the horsemen of the apocalypse, but that's more than the golden western.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's more character-focused when you get characters like Wolverine and Saber-tooth or Bear and I don't think there's a ton of Western mentality and it's hard Wolverines and a bar in the Yukon, you know, and there's a packet outside it's weirdly Western, like, true.
- 4:44[SPEAKER_01]: Wolverine is inherently Western.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just in general.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: I would be fun to see one of the four horsemen just be super cowboy though Like famine is like yeah, just like blowing out like guns with like bugs out of it.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: That'd be fun There's a there's an episode or an issue of Captain America where famine is the villain and she's like destroying all the wheat fields in America's breadbasket I love that issue so much I want to do a famine episode one day
- 5:10[SPEAKER_00]: Now, okay, we're going to keep today, I mean, we're going to focus on Calico, obviously, who's a new character.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: We don't often do new characters in this way.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: I think I did want on Escapade once, so like a lot of her appearances aren't covered because we recorded it before they came out.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_00]: Calico is in the middle of her early production life cycle, maybe she lasts forever, maybe she fades into obscurity in a couple of years.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_00]: But I think it's okay.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna be a little editorial today, all three of us are professional podcasters who've been doing this for years.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_00]: How are we feeling about the X-Men line, post-Critoa?
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: And we're gonna be editorial, but also nice to our peers as we do this for you.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_00]: Ryan, how are you feeling about the line of books in the last few years?
- 5:53[SPEAKER_01]: It's, uh, I, I will, I think forever look back on my favorite times in the comics.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_01]: So whether it's out back a bunch of years ago or this most recent history with Kricoa, I, I, I, I, I look back them on them fondly.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_01]: I will always read the current comics and I think there's some gems in there right now.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_01]: But I think overall, I would like to see a little bit more cohesiveness, just in general in the line, and I find myself, I read a lot of comics, I consume a lot of like pop culturey stuff.
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: And so I find myself running towards some of the other comics a little bit faster than the X-Men line.
- 6:34[SPEAKER_01]: But with that said, I love some of these writers so much.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_01]: I, I, one thing that I love about a new rebrand that Xman does every couple of years is when they roll out some new characters.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_01]: So this recent run on uncanny Xman was very exciting.
- 6:51[SPEAKER_01]: Some of the other lines as well.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_01]: They were all introducing brand new characters that were fully fleshed out.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what, that's why I read the,
- 7:03[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm enjoying all the new starts that we're having in the run.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_02]: I did the cartoon, read the comics, kind of fell off, came back for the podcast, kind of been readings in the Resurrection era.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_02]: This is like head and shoulders above the Resurrection era, obviously.
- 7:16[SPEAKER_02]: At the same time, I feel like Cricua was just so great.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_02]: And there was just such long-term vision, there was interconnected storytelling.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_02]: Ten of swords, well, not even content-wise is my favorite crossover.
- 7:29[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's the best one of telling that integrated, every issue just builds upon itself and tells like an overall chapter.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_02]: story, verses like something like age of revelation or other things, what I will say though is that it's not so much the writing.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_02]: I think the writers, artists, or highly competent, there's tons of great nuggets if you like obviously find the right book to look for the right stuff, uncanny X-Men being one of them.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_02]: And some of the series, particularly the longer X-Men flagships are like Judd McKay's X-Men, like they're really having that long term feel that you're getting a full storyline.
- 8:00[SPEAKER_02]: Like it does feel like older school X-Men, which I enjoy in that
- 8:03[SPEAKER_02]: What I don't love is that the overall narrative compared to like something like the code, which I know there's an inherent like editorial or executive decision to go towards that direction.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm not holding anyone really accountable.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_02]: That's creating the content.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_02]: I think they're doing the best with what the executive direction has been for where X-Men is supposed to go.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_02]: And I will say I also did overall enjoy Age of Revelation.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_02]: I thought that was a good crossover.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_02]: Especially compared to some of the ones that we'll talk about today Because the uncanny X-Men find themselves in them thankfully for less issues than then some of the other stuff that I do like
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I've done a lot of comic book writing and interviews with comic professionals at this time and it's a crazy thing to be at a time in my life where I've befriended a lot of the professionals even if they haven't been on the show.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_00]: new problems.
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think people are frustrated because some storylines are playing out for a really long time.
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, Gail has a lot of strengths as a writer.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: If we're talking about uncanny x-men volume six, which has been running for about 25 issues at this point.
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: She's very loyal to her characters.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: She gives a lot of really quicky and fun dialogue.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: There's some really fun ways of characters interacting with each other in subtle ways.
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: And one of the things we're going to talk about with this run is we're going to talk about the four outliers, obviously, as the characters that we need to highlight in Gales run.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: But as they are existing at Haven House and Louisiana, these four different characters,
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: have all had a little bit of mythology built around them now.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_00]: They've all had kind of a big story arc, and a lot of them had been introduced like a new villain.
- 9:47[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I remember going to, oh, I think it was the San Diego Con, maybe it was WonderCon, a few years back before the book launched, and they were just announcing that Gail was on the book.
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: And I saw Gail give an interview.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: I introduced myself to her afterward, and we've had several conversations since, but in that interview, she's like, I can't tell you anything about any of the new characters yet.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: but I'm introducing four new mutants that are all based off of an innate disability.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I pulled up a section that Gale gave on these characters.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_00]: This is a quote from Gale in an interview.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: Of these four new characters, some of them do not even admit that their mutants, some of them don't want to be.
- 10:22[SPEAKER_00]: Some of them do, and they're just learning about what their abilities are, and we learn with them throughout the story.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know if they're good or bad.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know which side of that they fall on yet.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: And I wanted to give them all what I call invisible mutations, which will compare to an invisible disability, so that when you look them up, you cannot tell their mutants.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's not like they have blue skin or claws that pop out.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: So that's one of the reasons why some of them may deny that they're mutants.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_00]: all because it doesn't just seem like other mutants they are around.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: They have a more modern, today-type problems.
- 10:53[SPEAKER_00]: A guild was also asked in that live interview how she chose the roster of her team, which is Rogue Gambit, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, and Jubilee, and Gales like, oh, easy.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_00]: I just picked the X-Men that are the most kissable, which I really loved the X-Men.
- 11:10[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to jump into the series and talk about the characters, but really we're going to keep today focused primarily on Calico because that's what we're here for, but it's interesting to have you to joining me as we are experiencing these books as fans, but also kind of professional reviewers.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: Now, one of the mysteries that's introduced at the very beginning, Gambit goes and gets the left eye of Agamado from Saturang the Dragon and it's slowly cursing him with like a hunger for human flesh throughout the series, but there's a reference to someone being an endling or someone who's going to be the end result of all mutants.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: uh, and in the most recent comic book that just came out, it's now hinting that the endling is actually Chelsea St. Juniors.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, so the the manager or the Jarvis to the X-Men, the manager of the, uh, Haven House, is a black man named Marcus St. Juniors who has some really interesting lore.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_00]: He has a daughter who's been revealed to be a mutant.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_00]: We saw her explain.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: in the edge of revelation a little bit and now it's kind of hinted that Chelsea who's been kind of the most minor character might end up being the ending, which whatever that goes to mean.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have any thoughts on kind of this?
- 12:19[SPEAKER_01]: I think overall the story has surprised me because I had no idea where it was going.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_01]: some of the arcs were very unexpected in a very nice way where I was thinking of early comics where you know when they just introduce a theme or a character or a location that you're like
- 12:41[SPEAKER_01]: What are we doing right?
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's some big ideas we're being introduced and I really like that about this book I think we were throwing the ball far and really coming up with some new creative like villains And then also just really fleshing out these people in the not necessarily the way that we thought they were going to go down He's opted typical hero journeys and they're not the typical landscapes that you see from the expert
- 13:04[SPEAKER_01]: I think throwing the X-Men, especially the new recruits, and needs like really strange situations, or what fans are going to remember the most about this run.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_02]: It feels like such a, oh yeah, I agree with you 100%.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_02]: I think the out of the all the new characters, the new ex-students, if you will, that are showing up in a lot of the flagships, I think certainly the outliers are the most, you know, you were mentioning earlier, Chad, like will, Calico be around.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_02]: I firmly believe all the people that are going to stick,
- 13:34[SPEAKER_02]: Even more so than I think some of the exceptional characters, certainly more so than many of the sort of like adult mutants that came like an amalia from X-Men and Jeff Yeah, and wrong brawns really stands out to me too.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_02]: Like it's just I just think ransom death 3 jitter and calico all just have such presence and Gail has done such an excellent job kind of what I was talking about before if like really longer form story telling that still feels Interesting something's happening every issue and moving the story forward
- 14:00[SPEAKER_02]: But it does feel like a TV show because you have like the night crawler dating scenarios.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_02]: You have them going to school.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_02]: Like it feels like you're watching a really good like 90s or 2000s TV show about like mutant kids and they're like mutant parents kind of thing.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_02]: So I've really enjoyed it.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_02]: There hasn't it and like it's been really balanced while I'm like the interesting comedy of like Nutina versus some other other stuff.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_02]: It's more serious like dark artery.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_02]: But I love what you said, Chad, where everyone's really getting their time to breathe.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_02]: And it's not just one issue in
- 14:29[SPEAKER_02]: a random person that just speaks.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, most comic professionals wish for 25 issues on next month.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 14:36[SPEAKER_02]: There's no mission.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_02]: Like it's not like they have a specific mission.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_02]: They're supposed to go deal.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm a deal has also created some really memorable villains in this.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_00]: She's not using her retreading old villains.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: She's kind of bringing brand new ones in and they're pretty memorable.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_00]: David Marquez is her art partner on this.
- 14:52[SPEAKER_00]: Now, okay, we're going to do some setup for this, and then we're going to, again, talk about Calico, but on Kenny Xman is the flagship book, it is a female writer.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_00]: It is the most diverse lineup of writers and artists that have ever worked on the books consecutively, except for maybe the age of Xman era, which just had a ton of diverse talent in the book.
- 15:11[SPEAKER_00]: But love or hate galsamone, we have to respect that there's a female writer at the flagship right now, and that's, that's pretty impressive.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: Cracoa has ended, and a group of X-Men are settling in Louisiana in a place called Haven House, which has ties to Gambit and Rogue, and there's some ties to ancient mutants.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: We'll get to there at a little while when we get to the dark artery storyline, and then there's a new group of outliers who show up looking for help from the X-Men.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_00]: because they are, uh, someone is after them.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_00]: They're in danger.
- 15:43[SPEAKER_00]: Now the term outlier itself, uh, defining these four kids outlier in modern vernacular is kind of the people who fall through the cracks.
- 15:52[SPEAKER_00]: If we look at anyone that the Trump administration doesn't like, that's usually
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: going to be an outlier.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: The disabled, the queer, the trans, the elderly.
- 16:00[SPEAKER_00]: There's all kinds of people who don't quite fit the mold.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_00]: Do you have thoughts on the name outlier?
- 16:05[SPEAKER_01]: I think this is smart.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: I think them having their own identifying name really makes sense.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_01]: How many teams have showed up and be called?
- 16:15[SPEAKER_01]: Have been called new mutants or the new X-Men?
- 16:17[SPEAKER_01]: you need to identify these characters because when we're looking at this a couple years down the line, I think branding's important for them specifically.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_01]: If they want to be their own characters, I think this is really important to have.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's kind of catchy.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_01]: I would have loved an X thrown in.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_01]: I'll take out layers.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_02]: The X-Liars, the X-Liars, yeah.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_01]: Which sounds like a show like on like CW, but yeah.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 16:46[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want my books retread it.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_00]: I don't want to be back in the Xavier mansion right away.
- 16:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's something new.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_00]: So the fact that they're at this kind of isolated house.
- 16:54[SPEAKER_00]: It feels like the Australian outback era almost to be us.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_00]: I like this setup.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to toss the four out layers your way and then let me hear your thoughts.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_00]: Again, they're each meant to represent some kind of disability or invisible status.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: So the first one we're going to talk about is Hotaru who is a death dream.
- 17:11[SPEAKER_00]: This is a Japanese mutant who died four times on the day of his birth.
- 17:15[SPEAKER_00]: He's a mutant who has inherent connections to death and the afterlife.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: He's necromanic, he manipulates souls.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_00]: He's dark.
- 17:23[SPEAKER_00]: He's almost drawn like nightmare.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_00]: The doctor's strange.
- 17:26[SPEAKER_00]: He'll be in a little bit.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_00]: He's meant to be almost kind of an anime villain where he blends into the background and he's a little creepy, but he's also really adorable.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: So it's got that kind of anime thing.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: I love Little Goth boy.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_02]: I think he's my favorite.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_02]: I think he has the best lines in the run, like I feel like Gil writes him really well.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_02]: It's such a fun, unique character, someone who is obviously observant understanding but still a little bit outside of the human perspective.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_02]: just because of everything that he's juggling.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_02]: I guess in, I would say there's definitely a lot of neuro divergency I'm picking up from Destery more than anything else, which I think is amazing.
- 18:00[SPEAKER_02]: I love, I just having reread a lot of the issues in the run for this podcast.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_02]: I love the through line of how they all become friends, but it's not without them having little head butts and little things like that.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_02]: But there are people that care about each other and they're all in the same mission.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_02]: So I just, it's wonderful to see that sort of coverage and support amongst all of them,
- 18:20[SPEAKER_00]: For Hotaro's journey of like learning how to really work with and understand how other people are thinking and feeling and I agree that that autism idea where you are neurodivergent and become obsessed with certain things and you're trying to understand the world and you need the right leaders to do so he's he's a fun character I agree he's the one character that I'm like you could easily have a spin off.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_01]: you could go down your own path, you could have your own little many of him interacting with other death related characters.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_01]: I definitely see a future for him.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_01]: He's the one that you could kind of pick out of the outliers and have their own little story.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, then we've got Ransson.
- 18:55[SPEAKER_00]: Ransson is Valentin Corria, who is from Buenos Aires, Argentina, and he feels very much like Sunspot to me.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_00]: He's a very evident in coloring.
- 19:05[SPEAKER_00]: He wears like one of those 90s like face mask coverings.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_00]: Black costume that almost looks like havoc with like a white outshirt or outer shirt over it.
- 19:13[SPEAKER_02]: He has a black hole for a heart.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: Basically this origin is he's got like corrupt parents and they turned on him and he died and then he had to run away from home.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: This black hole like super human durability and like density and super strength that he has It's giving kind of havoc and sunspot mix together a little bit love the guy don't understand his powers at all Don't get it at all, but I love him.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_01]: I love it We're gonna get his backstory of course He's obviously got a tragic pass with his like
- 19:41[SPEAKER_01]: parent.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_01]: It's a wild character and an even wilder name to be to really take a bad situation and make the best out of it.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_01]: That's I mean, that's his story, honestly.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_00]: And what are your thoughts on the disability he represents?
- 19:55[SPEAKER_01]: That's actually, that is actually a great question.
- 19:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's getting PTSD.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_00]: It's getting abandonment.
- 20:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's like that little place in your heart you form because you were betrayed, right?
- 20:08[SPEAKER_00]: Like a literal black hole in his heart building up a
- 20:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's all kind of there.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 20:12[SPEAKER_02]: He is overly focused on, you know, he's always trying to leave like he's the first one that's going to try to jump ship because he heard someone kind of like talk it, you know, but the older parents talking about kind of what was going on, how how are they supposed to care these kids.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_02]: Definitely had a little bit has a bit of a chip under shoulder, but again protects his own.
- 20:29[SPEAKER_02]: I think he's a great leader.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_02]: Like I love that he's also kind of coming together as.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_02]: Earlier the group, I also like Ryan don't understand what the fuck his powers are, but I love a powerful person and I think it's like an interesting power set.
- 20:40[SPEAKER_02]: It doesn't, it feels like they're just gonna be able to write whatever they want, but I do enjoy the costume I was just thinking today.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, I wonder what his next level will be.
- 20:48[SPEAKER_02]: He definitely seems like he's not gonna get his own issues, but and he may not be on the team's, who might not be leading the teams, but I know they're either gonna pick easily, pick him up for missions, I think, going farther.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_02]: They're like, oh yeah, and get, Wolverine's always gonna be like, oh yeah, and get ransom on the line, kind of shit.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_02]: when I have a really good rapport.
- 21:04[SPEAKER_00]: When I form an X-Men team in my brain, I very much after interviewing a bunch of people, I've learned how to create the character silhouette.
- 21:10[SPEAKER_00]: Like, if the team was all drawn and then colored in shadow, could you tell who each person was, right?
- 21:16[SPEAKER_00]: And ransom fills that like gambit or havoc archetype where it's the power blaster who's kind of talking to you.
- 21:24[SPEAKER_00]: You know, okay, then we have, we have Jitter.
- 21:27[SPEAKER_00]: who is Sophia Young, who's from Singapore.
- 21:30[SPEAKER_00]: She has, you know that character prodigy who can like take all your skills because he's next to you.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: She can basically do that.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_00]: She can download skills for like one minute and be the best in the world at that thing, whether it's archery or acrobatics or martial arts or science or whatever.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_00]: Sophia has a pronounced stutter and there's some interesting visual effects because she wears a stopwatch so there's kind of like a time effect that kicks in whenever she uses her powers.
- 21:56[SPEAKER_02]: I, uh, she immediately was my favorite character from the jump just because I think, uh, obviously her vocal pattern is really interesting, especially to see in writing.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's great to see representation for that.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_02]: I just think she's really cute and fun too.
- 22:09[SPEAKER_02]: And the skill, again, absolutely insane power, like the idea that you could become anything, the best of everything for a minute, is like that feels like to me an easy power to become a supervillain, because you're just like
- 22:20[SPEAKER_02]: whatever I want to do I can just do it and be the best at it and you know I'd be like entering competitions but be like I can only perform a minute at a time.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah I also like her outfit a lot.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_02]: I think she actually has the best costume of all four of them.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_02]: I think the body suit like works the color patterns are really cute and she's just a very fun character in that regard and I love Calico's relationship with her.
- 22:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Jitter and Calico are a queer couple, everyone.
- 22:42[SPEAKER_01]: We'll get to that in a little while.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_01]: She's given me anxiety, much like she has.
- 22:46[SPEAKER_01]: Um, I love her.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_00]: I mean social anxiety, uh, 100%.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: She has all this power in her, but she only do it in one minute.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: She's got to get it like she.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: I love that side of it.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_01]: It's very fun.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_01]: She's an anxious person just in general too.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_01]: So for her to have to focus and do this all in such a short amount of time, I
- 23:06[SPEAKER_01]: I don't even know how someone like that could be created.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_01]: I feel I identify with her a lot.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_01]: Also, she kind of horkens back to the most X-Men-E type of powers and look for me.
- 23:17[SPEAKER_01]: She kind of had her own outfit.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_01]: And I think she's the most X-Men potential out of this bunch together.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_00]: Now, we're going to introduce Calico.
- 23:25[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I had some conversations in the show earlier this month for those that have been listening about the archetype of queerness in Cowboys.
- 23:31[SPEAKER_00]: We play a lot with gender in Cowboys, right?
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: We've got the men in the chaps with their ass, like the Cowboys, like a whole symbol.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_00]: But Cowgirls are their own kind of symbol.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_00]: We play a lot with like calamity, Jane, and Annie get your gun, and there's all these like classic musicals and real, based some of them based off of real people, where it's the woman who wants to do the man's job.
- 23:50[SPEAKER_00]: She's good at shooting and spitting and she fits in with the guys, but at the end of the day, she still looks partying a dress.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we see a lot of that in in old westerns.
- 24:00[SPEAKER_00]: It's either that, the school bar, or like the Miss Kitty, the Hussie, at the bar that's like running all the prostitutes upstairs, right?
- 24:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like usually the three
- 24:09[SPEAKER_00]: Well, and then there's like the pure and innocent virgin.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_00]: God, you know, who's just waiting for the right song to be stressed.
- 24:15[SPEAKER_00]: So we've got to have some going to tie to the railroad tracks.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_00]: So Becca or Calico falls into these tropes, but she's kind of your lipstick lesbian a little bit.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: She's a, she's a very pretty kind of femme looking cowgirl.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_00]: where Outlaw is another Gelsimo in creation.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_00]: And Gail loves a horse girl.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna- She's a horse girl, not a cow girl.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_00]: That was Outlaw's kind of skunky, you know?
- 24:37[SPEAKER_00]: And Becca fits, I don't know, Becca's that girl you knew in school that was home schooled and like had that one thing she was good at and just didn't know much.
- 24:46[SPEAKER_00]: I literally knew girls like this in high school who were like obsessed with horses and that's all they knew.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: uh... so uh... calico is named after calico horses maybe for calico half uh... the name calico implies kind of a color set there's usually a solid color with some patches otherwise so she has kind of an orange horse sometimes people call her literally horse girl which is not the nice name
- 25:11[SPEAKER_00]: The name is Beckett Constant Simon Haifin Penette of the Ludon County Simon Penette.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: And she, we're going to talk about her history, but her mutant power, if you go to the Marvel Wiki, they call it psychokinesis, which is, I think, a term they use for exodus.
- 25:26[SPEAKER_00]: Exodus has, like, belief,
- 25:28[SPEAKER_00]: in him, and then he manifests that as like a psychic energy of kind, sometimes.
- 25:34[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know quite what the source of her psychokinesis is, but she seems to have a very deep bond with her horse.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's a trauma bond because she had a shitty childhood, and then she has a slight kind of reality altering power.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_00]: where she can give a code word to her horse, whether it's fire or even the word juggernaut.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_00]: And then kind of look like a valkyrie from like the, you know, Jane Foster is valkyrie or Brunsheld is about gray from the defenders, even Danny Moonstar is like you see like the the armor bestow itself on Becca.
- 26:07[SPEAKER_00]: The horse will change form, energy will surround it.
- 26:10[SPEAKER_00]: It can suddenly go the speed of light or or set itself on fire.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: But she's bonded with her horse.
- 26:16[SPEAKER_01]: So when they revealed all these characters, they gave little, before the actual series was out, they gave little descriptions of what each character did.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_01]: And we had ransom, which I was like, I don't get as powers still don't.
- 26:31[SPEAKER_01]: We had death during, kind of get it, jitter was a cool concept.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_01]: Then Calico came across my desk and it was just saying horse form.
- 26:39[SPEAKER_01]: Can change into different horse forms?
- 26:42[SPEAKER_01]: I still don't know what it is, but I love it every single time it happens.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_01]: The visual is so cool.
- 26:48[SPEAKER_01]: I think a lot of times when we're reading comics, we're waiting for that double page spread where the whole team is like spread out and they're all posing ready to fight the villain.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_01]: And one of the coolest things is having Calico in the background, like, laying on a firehorse is one of the coolest visuals.
- 27:06[SPEAKER_01]: What's what that I've seen.
- 27:07[SPEAKER_01]: And I think this actually adds a lot of flair to this entire team, because just visually it's very dominating.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_01]: And I think it's her way of being like, hey, I don't feel confident in myself, and I'm even done, but I can be confident in this moment, which I really love.
- 27:22[SPEAKER_00]: What's the worst?
- 27:23[SPEAKER_00]: What disability do you think she represents?
- 27:25[SPEAKER_00]: It's giving kind of, and I'm the therapist in the room, right?
- 27:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's giving kind of reactive attachment disorder.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't have any ability to connect that chat.
- 27:33[SPEAKER_00]: I was gonna say that.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_01]: I was gonna say I think she has the same thing that punch the monkey has, but with her horse, you know, oh
- 27:45[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody go look up, punch the monkey, he's big, he's big, he's big, he's big, he's certainly like co-dependency too, because I do think there's over time, there's a good evolution, we're like, I mean, just in the dark artery plot line, you know, she had, there's like, she has to be separated from the horse for a while, like it's just never an issue one, she's like sleeping with them, the first night or issue two whenever they take the break.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I find, I like her story a lot, like it feels like she has truly the most evolving development, because she's such a weird
- 28:13[SPEAKER_02]: when the, when it starts, just because of her upbringing kind of thing.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_01]: Living with repressed Republicans, basically.
- 28:19[SPEAKER_02]: Also, yeah.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_02]: Did you have much of a lot to do, right?
- 28:22[SPEAKER_02]: Like, don't wait, you know, my mom used to give me confidence and be like, don't otherwise gobbled or fuck you and turn you into a racist.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_00]: Did you know that girl in high school that was like obsessed with 4-H and like was also in school that this is Becca like she's she's fun.
- 28:38[SPEAKER_00]: I like that I like her name.
- 28:39[SPEAKER_00]: I like the diversity in this cast.
- 28:41[SPEAKER_00]: I really am fond of all four of the outliers.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: You guys were with me a couple what was it last year at Flamcon where we ended up having like a big podcast discussion with like a bunch of people in the room talking about the books and
- 28:53[SPEAKER_00]: like gauging everyone's feelings.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_00]: Do you guys remember this cover say yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
- 29:21[SPEAKER_00]: I really love the way Gil's Simone writes Gambit and Rogue though.
- 29:24[SPEAKER_00]: Can I tell you, it's so wonderful, very consistently.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_00]: I also love Gil's deep humor when it works, where Rogue is like, X-Men is my sexuality in that one issue.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, what?
- 29:39[SPEAKER_00]: There's the more recent one where that woman Mackenzie with spurs in that crawler's ear like I want you to banth me and then later She's like I got four times like that's next time Gail just thrives on good dialogue in a book.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_01]: She just kills it with dialogue the entire really the best Great service.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, except for X-Men is my sexuality That was the only one that I went what I've been using that for years.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_00]: I sent that to you I don't think it just didn't work
- 30:09[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so an issue too, they immediately end up on a fight because that's what superheroes do.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_00]: Unintentionally, Calico's words when we first see them on the page were about her mother being right about goblins.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_00]: So remember that in a little while, and then we see her achieve her first horse form.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: Pegasus Knight, she gets a giant golden angelic armor and ember gets wings.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_00]: Mother said, she said all mutants are dirty goblins.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_00]: Well, now that I'm reading her like this, she's not in a little lake forest gum, actually.
- 30:37[SPEAKER_00]: My mom always said that a mutants are like dirty goblins, or know what they're gonna do.
- 30:46[SPEAKER_00]: She spars with rogue who knocks Calico right out of the air, eventually they agreed to take the kids back and Calico introduces herself.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_00]: Back at Constance Simon Penet, I'm from Clint Wood, Virginia, and when prompted to pick a mutant name, Calico only I'm not a mutant.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_00]: She admits I have nowhere else to go, and the kids are being hunted.
- 31:07[SPEAKER_00]: In Issue 3, it's the first night at the mansion.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_00]: Calico chooses to sleep in full uniform with Ember in the barn.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_00]: Wolverine calls her horse girl.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_00]: They meet the St. Michael's family that I referenced earlier, and they learn the rules of the place.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: She calls Knight Crawler a goblin when she meets him again thinking about her mother.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_02]: I'm the usage of the word goblin and like a few dollars in space.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, we need to see her fighting the great.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_00]: Until she meets Maddie, yeah.
- 31:36[SPEAKER_00]: And then she trains against Nightcrawler and she takes on the barn stormer form where fiery wings and mane are barreling through, she burrows through wooden barriers.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_00]: So we've got Pegasus and barn stormer.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_00]: And then in this year, we also see a private interview where Becca opens up her heart about her past.
- 32:00[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really know how to talk to people, my mother she wrapped me in her love every day to protect me from the world, no films, no TV, no music, said they'd only hurt me in the end, but I had my books, my lovely library and my best friend Amber, all the horses really,
- 32:17[SPEAKER_00]: And we see images of her having a meal at a huge table that could fit 10 people that she's there by herself.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_00]: One night I smelled smoke.
- 32:25[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't shout.
- 32:26[SPEAKER_00]: I'd been taught not to shout.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_00]: I went to the stables in my bare feet.
- 32:30[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why I didn't shout.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_00]: Mother could be strict.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_00]: She left me in a locked cupboard for four days once.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_00]: Because she loved me so much.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_00]: Do you know what would be nice some lemonade?
- 32:40[SPEAKER_00]: Would one of the help make me a glass of milk?
- 32:43[SPEAKER_01]: Look, you please.
- 32:47[SPEAKER_00]: Now, jump to the most recent arc in the X-Men where it's like the monsters arc that's happening.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_00]: There's a reference when Moutina attacks the group where she says, hey, did you know about Calico?
- 33:00[SPEAKER_00]: She talks about that fire in her past.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_00]: Do you know she's the one that set the fire?
- 33:04[SPEAKER_00]: So that's a recent line of dialogue that adds some...
- 33:07[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, what year is she from?
- 33:09[SPEAKER_00]: Is she time traveling?
- 33:10[SPEAKER_01]: She seems so out of place.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_01]: I felt like she was going to see a cell phone in school and be like, oh my word, what is that?
- 33:17[SPEAKER_01]: Like she felt so weird and great.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: Like she was just so trapped in her family dynamic that I don't think she had any friends.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think she was able to basically it's given the girl raised in like a polygamous compound where there's like the effect of the outside world.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_01]: But in we're talking about mama, mama, the whole time.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, is mama just going to be a skeleton on a stool somewhere in like a burning barn?
- 33:44[SPEAKER_01]: Like I'm so scared.
- 33:46[SPEAKER_01]: Like when she goes down the mama path, Calico's very sweet, engaging, very socially awkward because she's a little new to this.
- 33:54[SPEAKER_01]: But when she talks about her family dynamic, it gets a little spooky for me, honestly.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_00]: He's kind of a mean girl, but you kind of get where it's coming from, because it's from up here.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, my God, it's kind of like, oh, the unbreakable kimi Schmidt.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_02]: I just got to say it.
- 34:07[SPEAKER_02]: But that's like, she doesn't.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_02]: Nothing that she says or does has any malice in it.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_02]: She's just such an illusion.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, she don't know.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_02]: I really enjoy it because I'm glad that it make her this like standoffish like head bit like top bitch and charge kind of.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_02]: Especially coming from money.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_02]: Like they play down a lot just to be like, no, you're just a crazy trap girl, but like probably
- 34:28[SPEAKER_01]: thing and I love that it's also a mystery nobody seems to care about solving there or just like all right she said the fire was there like let's go about our day like it's fun to tell you reveal it come and tell you something when we when we first I made everyone talk about calico for way too long now it was like let me tell you what do you think she did where when are these horse forms coming I was obsessed
- 34:47[SPEAKER_01]: So one of the theories that I was throwing out when she was first introduced because she says, I'm not a mutant.
- 34:54[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, what if the horse is the mutant?
- 34:57[SPEAKER_01]: And she's just like, being like taking along for the ride.
- 35:00[SPEAKER_01]: I think we've proved that that's not true, but I thought it was such a fun dynamic to look at like maybe animals being the mutant side of it.
- 35:07[SPEAKER_00]: One of the issues that I reviewed on the main show in April, which you guys can hear, it's pre-recorded at this point, but with Jordan Wyatt and Alana Smith, we review the one shot, the X-Men, visit the State Fair of Texas, with Magneto detects a new mutant named, uh, Equus, who's a little white boy who loves horses, and he bursts out of his clothes that has like a
- 35:33[SPEAKER_00]: And it's very queer, but there's a line, a lot of Smith and I laugh about this really hard.
- 35:36[SPEAKER_00]: There's a line where Magneto is like, you and I relate to each other.
- 35:40[SPEAKER_00]: We are both horse lovers, and a lot of like, why is horse lovers one word?
- 35:44[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like it.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, Becca's giving me very echoous vibes in that way.
- 35:53[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, now I'm a Charles Xavier Purist as like the only guy maybe in the world to have ever pitched a Charles Xavier origin story to Marvel comics.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_00]: I got to do that twice, it was turned out, but I don't like Sarah Gaunt because it just does it fit.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_00]: Gail's trying to do a weird thing where she's created a certain kind of telepath.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's almost going back to the Chuck Austin era where like certain mutants have like a certain mutation that makes them connected to each other.
- 36:20[SPEAKER_00]: It's the externals are that, but would you get into like the lupine and like the nae of them and all those things Chuck Austin was doing, it's almost doing that.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: There's like a bald telepath,
- 36:31[SPEAKER_00]: section of people that she's trying to call me avians, a little boy with cancer named Harvey X dies, and then there's this other guy at the prison who, anyway, Rantelsu Saragontas, she's known as the hag, and I hate you.
- 36:44[SPEAKER_01]: Why do I have to define what a hag is?
- 36:47[SPEAKER_00]: How much in common?
- 36:50[SPEAKER_01]: So essentially, she was a er, when Xavier was at Oxford, she was an early girlfriend to him, and they sort of had a romance.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_01]: We didn't hear much about it, but it felt like a little quick little fling that she had with him.
- 37:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'm smash cut to years later where she has a son, and she's literally caught in her hurricane, holding onto her son for dear life.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_01]: And during their hurricane, she unfortunately, to save her own life has to let go of her son, and then she's consumed with the storm.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_01]: She survived, but after she comes out of it, she is a horribly disfigured, unfortunately, named like her last name, got looking.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_01]: Like almost like a tree sort of long limbs.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_00]: She looks like she looks like the girl that climbs out of the TV in the ring.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, if she was like ono's epic too, because she's like stretched out version of it.
- 37:50[SPEAKER_02]: You know, and she also hit up the pedicure.
- 37:52[SPEAKER_02]: See, everybody's she got a manicure done.
- 37:54[SPEAKER_02]: Look at this.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, she's like very long nails, almost clawed like that are very strong and can cut through some crazy stuff.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_00]: very much.
- 38:06[SPEAKER_00]: She's like a swamp lady, but like her, she thinks that Charles Xavier fathered her son and then she lost her son and then the hurricane mutated her, but now she thinks she needs to get revenge on Charles even though it wasn't his kid.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_00]: I don't understand why she's after the outliers.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_00]: There's something huge missing from this story for me.
- 38:28[SPEAKER_00]: And when I interviewed Tom Breaver about this, I'm like, I don't understand what Sarah Gonton is like,
- 38:36[SPEAKER_01]: Chad, do you think it's that thing, you know, when you date someone for like two weeks in college and then they become like a big star and then you're like, I was with them and you I'm sure she sees Xavier on the TV all the time and she's like, oh, it's his fault if I just stayed with him, I would have been a big star.
- 38:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like if Xavier had done something to hurt her or even Moira, like I could understand this better than anything.
- 39:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's an odd.
- 39:02[SPEAKER_02]: We don't know how she got her powers.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know how her powers even work.
- 39:06[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I do like the idea that I like her as a character.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_02]: I'd like to see actual answers for every single question you're posing.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_02]: because that like I think the powers are cool.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_02]: She's too overpowering, but I think the powers are pretty cool.
- 39:17[SPEAKER_02]: What I don't understand is, why was there a cult that was following her?
- 39:21[SPEAKER_02]: She like converted fawn to like a tack, a haven house, but then that's never really what happened to her.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, where did they go?
- 39:29[SPEAKER_00]: There's a character, there's a mutant named fawn who's like,
- 39:31[SPEAKER_00]: the poor men's nature girl basically who like converts herself over to the hack.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, there's a big fight with the experiment in the outliers.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_00]: Collego gets a juggernaut form.
- 39:40[SPEAKER_00]: She's glowing with light.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_00]: She and Amber both get juggernaut helmets and then it's lost when she's knocked off her horse.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_01]: So next is the crossover that begins.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_01]: And Calico finds herself a taken prisoner into gray-mulk in prison.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, this is the X-manchin, but it's now a mutant detainment camp.
- 39:59[SPEAKER_01]: So her and a few of the other X-men get captured, there she witnesses the physical and mental torture of fellow mutants beast and jubilee, including the worst torture that could ever be described, which is eating mutant food.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_01]: There's a whole scene.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_01]: There's a big old scene in the prison where they're eating this like strange, rice, hay-looking thing.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_01]: And obviously being tortured there, she's had enough.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: She's experiencing all these things.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_01]: She's going through her own identity crisis by not really coming out as a mutant, not knowing how to deal with that.
- 40:33[SPEAKER_01]: So as she's eating this food, as she's literally in a mutant-determined camp, she just...
- 40:38[SPEAKER_01]: exclaims I'm eating mutant food with other mutants because my name's Calico of the Louisiana Xman and I'm a mutant and then she just starts to break down into yours and that's basically like her sort of like coming out at that point I thought it was impactful to a point it just felt like it came out of nowhere
- 40:59[SPEAKER_00]: When when we saw that moment of her sort of like exclaiming out loud for the first time that I'm a me by the way If you haven't noticed yet everyone we're gonna keep talking gill some on most of her super villains are women She's there's a whole new new new women.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, tell us about Karina Ellis who's running gray malkin prison She's awful.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_00]: She's so yeah, with the worst
- 41:17[SPEAKER_01]: So basically, she took over, she purposely, which we might see in current day politics, took somewhere that was really beloved by the X-Men or mutant kind and turned it into a literal prison.
- 41:30[SPEAKER_01]: So all these current mutants are actually trapped in there and they are being held captive by her and a few of these other teams.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_01]: And then they're also being utilized for their powers and just constantly tortured.
- 41:44[SPEAKER_01]: There's a couple of them that have been in their siren.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think the blob of you have just been in there since the start of this run and just have not been able to leave.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_00]: Let's step back to uncanny X-Men 5 for a moment.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_00]: Or number 6 for a moment.
- 41:58[SPEAKER_00]: 6 is an issue number 6 of uncanny X-Men by Gelsimone is called to change in ourselves.
- 42:03[SPEAKER_00]: We open on six years ago at the Simon Penet estate in Clint Wood, Virginia, and we get a view into Calico's childhood bedroom.
- 42:12[SPEAKER_00]: It is horse vomit.
- 42:14[SPEAKER_00]: It is the party with horses.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's a video game called Happy Horse Racers on the screen.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_00]: Horse on the windows, a horse baby mobile,
- 42:24[SPEAKER_00]: her bed is decorated in horses.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_00]: She's sitting on the floor while the mom braids her hair and her mom looks like, I don't know, like Anna went to her or something.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_00]: She's she's very prim and proper and oh, she's there's even a horse rocking chair in the room.
- 42:39[SPEAKER_01]: Mama, why can't I brush my own hair and dulled your mother back at it?
- 42:43[SPEAKER_00]: I do so enjoy our time together.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_00]: I rather hate that you're growing up.
- 42:47[SPEAKER_00]: Something else on your mind, daughter.
- 42:49[SPEAKER_02]: Well, it's just I was talking to Liam.
- 42:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's a new assistant groundskeeper and he's ever so nice.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_00]: Is he?
- 42:55[SPEAKER_00]: How sweet.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_00]: He showed me a picture.
- 42:57[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a daughter same age as me.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_00]: She goes to school in that school in town.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_00]: He says, I was thinking, maybe I could go there too.
- 43:04[SPEAKER_00]: We're done here.
- 43:05[SPEAKER_00]: Go get dressed for your lessons.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_00]: Hurry, scurry, little furry.
- 43:09[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, mama.
- 43:10[SPEAKER_00]: And then the mom picks up the phone.
- 43:11[SPEAKER_00]: Hello, groundskeeper Jacob's.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_00]: I caught a new man leering at me through the window as I was dressing.
- 43:17[SPEAKER_00]: He was touching himself Mr. Jacob's.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_00]: I want him fired immediately.
- 43:21[SPEAKER_00]: I believe his name is Liam.
- 43:23[SPEAKER_00]: Rough backstory.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_00]: Wow, and then we jump to the present where the X-Men are basically trying to convince the kids they all have to go to school and Becca is like I will not and she makes her horse kick Wolverine in a very odd full-page image of the horses back legs Bronco but she says row gets mad Becca constant Simon Penet you stop this now.
- 43:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry mama rogue
- 43:47[SPEAKER_00]: I meant Ms. Rowe, Ms. Lebow.
- 43:50[SPEAKER_00]: We can understand her reluctance to go to school based on her backstory.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_00]: And then, Rowe says we got to have a talk, the mutant to mutant.
- 43:57[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not a mutant, Mama said.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_00]: Again, it's like, let me handle this.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_00]: So, gambit, I don't have a good French accent.
- 44:03[SPEAKER_00]: Child I see you been hurt.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_00]: We ain't here.
- 44:06[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just doing Southern.
- 44:07[SPEAKER_00]: That's all that's in my voice.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_02]: Back to the cowards.
- 44:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just doing him on to do his regular child.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_00]: I see you been hurt.
- 44:14[SPEAKER_00]: We ain't here to hurt nobody.
- 44:15[SPEAKER_00]: But Mama said child, look in my eyes.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone who sees me.
- 44:19[SPEAKER_00]: I can't change what they see.
- 44:21[SPEAKER_00]: These people taught me that I don't need to.
- 44:23[SPEAKER_00]: You understand?
- 44:24[SPEAKER_00]: Mama said I couldn't be a mutant.
- 44:26[SPEAKER_00]: She said mutants were made by goblins.
- 44:28[SPEAKER_00]: Doing nasty things with witches.
- 44:30[SPEAKER_01]: And you love your mama, says Gambit, but it won't change who you are.
- 44:33[SPEAKER_00]: All my life I've felt wrong, like a fall with three legs.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a Becca, you're one of us.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_00]: You're a mutant.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a mutant.
- 44:40[SPEAKER_00]: Are you okay?
- 44:41[SPEAKER_00]: Don't be sad and unsure.
- 44:42[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a mutant.
- 44:43[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a mutant.
- 44:45[SPEAKER_00]: And this is giving Rudolph the Red Nose Ranger.
- 44:47[SPEAKER_01]: I can fly.
- 44:49[SPEAKER_02]: She said I'm cute.
- 44:53[SPEAKER_00]: Love him through the sky.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_00]: She's thrilled.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_00]: She lands.
- 44:57[SPEAKER_00]: She's hugging everybody.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_00]: We're all mutants.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I get to go to school and everything is lovely.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_00]: Chelsea St. Jane Jr.'s gives her a purple dinosaur that looks like a weird brontosaurus Barney.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_00]: Barney, yeah.
- 45:09[SPEAKER_00]: To take to school with her.
- 45:10[SPEAKER_00]: And when she gets to school, it seems to go kind of okay.
- 45:14[SPEAKER_00]: What are our thoughts on this issue?
- 45:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's heartfelt for sure.
- 45:17[SPEAKER_02]: I do like a lot.
- 45:18[SPEAKER_02]: I think it definitely sets up.
- 45:20[SPEAKER_02]: I was like Ryan like you were mentioning that if you're just if you're kind of jumping in just for that rate and gray mouth and you'd be like who the fuck is this horse girl and why she's so focused on being a music and I think that issue definitely sets it up really
- 45:33[SPEAKER_02]: Well, and I think it's the first time after they're sort of like initial encounter and escape from Sarah Gont that they could just be kids, which again, I think is the best version of the new mutants quote unquote of any of the flagship X-Men titles because it just it feels natural that they would all be doing that and it's showing
- 45:50[SPEAKER_02]: Everybody, you know, you can't do Spider-Man when he's in high school.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_02]: You can't do anybody in high school and not show them going to high school.
- 45:55[SPEAKER_02]: There's like something about the school culture, the lunch room, the vibe.
- 45:59[SPEAKER_02]: But like obviously getting into fights with bullies, like you need that kind of.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_02]: It's obviously cliche, but it's useful to showcase how these people interact when they're not just like fighting for their lives or listening to the adults in the room, tell them what to do or fighting with the adults kind of like.
- 46:14[SPEAKER_00]: So she goes to school and for years her only friend has been her horse and now she's like with all these student population on the first day she stands up to some bullies and then some guards from grandma can present electrocute her and take her captive they call carina Ellis we got the equestrian she's alive let's bring her in so that's how she ends up in the prison
- 46:33[SPEAKER_01]: I like seeing this journey.
- 46:35[SPEAKER_01]: It's a coming out story in so many different ways of it could be a queer story or whatever it is.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_01]: But I just like seeing this actual story being told from some new moons.
- 46:46[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of, I think a lot of new moons when they were introduced in the, an X-Men comics now.
- 46:51[SPEAKER_01]: It's just, yes, I'm a moon, and this is tough, but there's no big coming out moments.
- 46:55[SPEAKER_01]: So I like, I think we all had maybe a coming out moment too.
- 46:58[SPEAKER_01]: So I like this big exclamation of something big.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_01]: Um, and saying it out loud is having the power in it.
- 47:04[SPEAKER_02]: I like what you said right into that, like, I, what I think is really cool about this, especially what you said Chad, regarding the fact that these are all characters based off of invisible uh, disabilities in the sense of like, or just invisible experiences because, you know, so often coming out is like the main thing to do, but I love that for Calico, for Becca.
- 47:23[SPEAKER_02]: her connecting with, as we'll see in a couple of issues of connecting with Jitter, there's never a question of what who do I love or who my interested in, and I think that actually tells an even more nowadays Gen Z type story line where like there's obviously still tons of people trying to strip any sort of rights from gay people, queer people, trans people, but the comfort level of acclimating to that almost feels easier sometimes in coming out and thinking to yourself, at least you know, coming out to yourself, feels easier than sometimes where you have to identify and diagnose like,
- 47:51[SPEAKER_02]: What's happening with you?
- 47:52[SPEAKER_02]: What do you need help with?
- 47:53[SPEAKER_02]: What's really going on beyond this like what's you know Nothing is bad, but it's just sort of like how do you juggle with that?
- 47:58[SPEAKER_02]: How do you cope with that?
- 47:59[SPEAKER_02]: Shouldn't have to really cope with being queer, but you do have to cope with a lot of things that you might be dealing with.
- 48:03[SPEAKER_01]: I have to go out in a limb and say her mom's not going to love her being queer.
- 48:08[SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna say it.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_01]: You know what I mean?
- 48:10[SPEAKER_01]: Like she's probably not loving that, too.
- 48:13[SPEAKER_01]: Or her basically having any relationship really.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_00]: Karina Ellis has been just an awful character.
- 48:19[SPEAKER_00]: So she, any one she gets her hands on, she's torturing them, she's turning them into assets.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_00]: She's trying to make each prisoner valuable in their bad food.
- 48:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but being kind of cruel, using torture, using mind-control, using shock collars.
- 48:34[SPEAKER_02]: But wait, I thought we got rid of a question.
- 48:36[SPEAKER_02]: She's still around.
- 48:39[SPEAKER_00]: But with Becca, she is seeing Becca as an asset because Becca's family has money.
- 48:44[SPEAKER_00]: So here's the scene in the cafeteria.
- 48:46[SPEAKER_00]: Your family, your wealthy, politically connected family has gotten in touch.
- 48:50[SPEAKER_00]: Imagine my surprise when they tell me that you are not a mutant after all.
- 48:54[SPEAKER_00]: You can leave as well, given that your family will be making a sizable donation to Grandma, and for all the trouble, we may even name a wing after you, after all you have to do, is sign this affidavit and declare that you are not a mutant, not like the rest of the gene trash here.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sure you'll be happy to be back with your own kind, and she refuses to do it.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_00]: Instead, she eats the food, and we get this weird image of her cheeks all puffed out.
- 49:18[SPEAKER_00]: She's crying.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: My name's Calico of the Louisiana X-Men, and I'm a mutant, and that's when they beat the shit out of bees.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_00]: So this four part of with with Raid on Gray Malkin, we also see Bechus summon Ember to her.
- 49:34[SPEAKER_00]: She has an opportunity to escape the prison on her own, but instead of leaving she summons her horse, Ember to me, War Horse.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_00]: So we have another form of War Horse.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_00]: This one just looks the same as the Pegasus though.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's like all fiery.
- 49:47[SPEAKER_02]: They're all going to start.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like they're all going to start blending together on some places.
- 49:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so it seems like a lot of the horse forms, if you will, but they all seem to just be a little bit of just a horse's on fire.
- 49:59[SPEAKER_01]: Is that like the, it seems like sort of, and then just they're kind of wearing different clothes, and maybe have slightly different powers.
- 50:05[SPEAKER_02]: She needs more like mega man.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_02]: We're like, she ends up fighting another horse-based villain and then stealing that horse.
- 50:10[SPEAKER_01]: I love that.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_01]: Like I would love like space horse.
- 50:13[SPEAKER_01]: For underwater, what, see?
- 50:15[SPEAKER_02]: Because a little, yeah, she has a little sea horse to go in on, at least later in the run, but I hate it.
- 50:20[SPEAKER_02]: I want like a wind, I definitely want a wind to her.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_02]: I definitely need water, I need like ice.
- 50:25[SPEAKER_02]: I need, if you've got to give me at least the number of things that Evie has in Pokemon.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_00]: I was gonna say is Amber just Evie, you know?
- 50:31[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, sure, sure.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_00]: Grimmel can prison is on the estate of the Xavier Grounds and there's a prisoner ex two years later we still don't fucking know who this is but Xavier was in this prison for a while he escaped it's a whole thing and no people are feeling a little polarized by this story given that the ex men could just like break into this prison and some of their allies like Dazzler and Siren have just been there forever
- 50:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was tough to know that Siren's been in there and they're like, well, we're getting Jubilee because X-Men 97 is recently just come out.
- 51:01[SPEAKER_01]: So like, it's tough that they're not prioritizing more of the, like, you're not on a major team, then we're not breaking you out.
- 51:08[SPEAKER_01]: It's kind of tough.
- 51:09[SPEAKER_02]: The only thing that worked for me specifically for it is that they had Scurvy creating the sort of like psychic break where that was.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, but I love that it gave a reason as to why these two teams are so worked up and fighting because so often Avengers vs X-Men, all other sorts of like two teams fighting whether they're new and or not.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_02]: It's just so exhausting to watch heroes who can juggle so much thoughtful complexity.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, why would go, well, the only thing we can do is punch like this at least had a reason as to why they were all acting insane, which fit.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_00]: I want to, I want to feel like it's Legion.
- 51:53[SPEAKER_02]: Mmm.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_02]: Sure.
- 51:55[SPEAKER_02]: That probably gets you.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it's some new mutant that we don't care about.
- 51:58[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, let's jump to the shoe nine.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_00]: Talico goes out to the barn to dance and she's joined by Jitter, who downloads the skills of the world's best male dancer.
- 52:07[SPEAKER_00]: And they have a incredible full page, like dance routine between them.
- 52:11[SPEAKER_00]: And it's very cute.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_00]: And Becca is very, like, uh, dance is my best love outside of horses.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_00]: My mom never let me have a dance partner before.
- 52:22[SPEAKER_00]: Love, brewing between these two teams is very cute.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_00]: Later, they're fighting bloodhound, sentinel dogs that have been introduced.
- 52:30[SPEAKER_00]: And she summons her destroyer warhorse form.
- 52:33[SPEAKER_00]: So we've seen Warhorse, but now it's the destroyer warhorse, which is still the thing.
- 52:39[SPEAKER_02]: it's the lowest in war horrors always in war horrors you just give screaming any adjectives on top of it.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_00]: This one gives a little bit more samurai like she's like a samurai shoulder pads in that form.
- 52:51[SPEAKER_00]: In Ishten we see her summon her
- 52:55[SPEAKER_00]: deeper chase form, which is huge golden arcing wings, and she fights more of the devil dog, especially after Jitter gets injured.
- 53:04[SPEAKER_00]: I'm brushing my own dog for once, she says, she also has Ember kick ransom in order to power him up in this
- 53:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's very, very silly in its way.
- 53:19[SPEAKER_02]: They're fiery, and they've got wings, and I love them.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_02]: They never get old.
- 53:23[SPEAKER_02]: I did, I will agree that, I mean, it was also partly that was the artist change, but I did.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_02]: She looked fucking like a bad woman in the mall.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_02]: She was like beating the shit out of everything.
- 53:33[SPEAKER_02]: She was the key player in that scenario, which was really cool.
- 53:36[SPEAKER_02]: Like her, they've done such a great job of continuing to build her character development.
- 53:41[SPEAKER_01]: We'll also actually giving her a lot of action on the field.
- 53:45[SPEAKER_02]: I loved where it was a death dream was like, oh wait, you're like not organic.
- 53:48[SPEAKER_02]: So like I can't really use my backwards against you.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_02]: And she's like, don't worry.
- 53:52[SPEAKER_02]: I'm a fucking like horse woman that could just beat the shit out of everything.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, in issue 11, they have a little danger room that's built out of hay bales outside.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_00]: And they have to fight against the X-Men.
- 54:01[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, Calico's triad, but nightcrawler just teleports are off her horse.
- 54:05[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, thank you.
- 54:06[SPEAKER_00]: Also, my butt hurts because he drops her on the ground.
- 54:08[SPEAKER_00]: That's got all she gets in this issue.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_00]: And then, Nishu 12, we see her interacting with the team.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_00]: They play baseball.
- 54:14[SPEAKER_00]: They have a barbecue.
- 54:16[SPEAKER_00]: Then we see the conclusion of the Xavier story in X-Man hunt.
- 54:19[SPEAKER_00]: Omega, don't worry about it.
- 54:21[SPEAKER_00]: She's briefly there as well.
- 54:23[SPEAKER_00]: And then Adam, we get the next big arc in 13 through 16 on Kenny Xman.
- 54:27[SPEAKER_00]: Do you want to tell us?
- 54:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I sure do because this is a very calico intensive run.
- 54:33[SPEAKER_02]: So we got 13 through 16.
- 54:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's a four part storyline called Dark Artary reveals a lot about Calico's paths.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_02]: So in issue 13, she gets to clock ransom and nothing but her draw and his draw is an a t-shirt.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_02]: And I like I was like these are like you just I was like the pot.
- 54:48[SPEAKER_02]: and follows the rest of the outliers in the number of the dark artery.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_02]: Sophia and Calico, they share blushes and touches that ransom notice.
- 54:55[SPEAKER_02]: So the team is starting to take note of this obviously burgeoning romance between the two Calico gets nervous about an obsidian black design being less than 100 miles away from the swamp.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_02]: And then Amber refuses to enter the artery and Calico gets too scared to keep going until ransom and jitter both empathize with and support her.
- 55:13[SPEAKER_00]: Could we pause for just a moment?
- 55:14[SPEAKER_00]: Can you tell the dark artery is?
- 55:16[SPEAKER_00]: This ties really into death dream, but also into the origins of Haven House.
- 55:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's giving very ryan coogler in sinners.
- 55:23[SPEAKER_00]: It's giving very American horror story, come in energy.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_00]: This, this, this, yes, story.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so there, it's seemingly, you take a boat on the swamp by you to get to this giant obsidian black cave.
- 55:36[SPEAKER_00]: That's like, it's Henry at a Benjamin.
- 55:39[SPEAKER_02]: Exactly, our little Henrietta.
- 55:41[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, these are actually a great set of issues because you also get this entire backstory on this sort of, like, almost neutral character turned hero by the end of Henrietta, who is protecting over.
- 55:51[SPEAKER_02]: So the used to be a old graveyard for mutates as they were called years ago.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_02]: And then over time, it sort of was shadowed up as the
- 56:02[SPEAKER_02]: it's became a guard for the penumerat, which was a thing that a portal essentially to this thing called shuvarok.
- 56:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a thing that is my right.
- 56:11[SPEAKER_00]: You know, the number is okay.
- 56:13[SPEAKER_00]: So this is giving very, it's a Henrietta Benjamin is a black woman raised in the south.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_00]: She's immune, but she's also suffering from racism.
- 56:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's almost like she doesn't know she's immune yet.
- 56:23[SPEAKER_00]: And eventually she dies as she's going to Louisiana to a place called the artery where there's a gateway to a land called Penumbra, which is like a realm of the dead.
- 56:34[SPEAKER_00]: And it almost gives,
- 56:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a secret society of black mutants who descended from slavery almost, and they have formed this kind of communion in this afterlife together, and Shuvarak is the god that's like guarding this realm, it's like the dark evil that they're blocking by bringing peace to this land.
- 56:54[SPEAKER_00]: Benjamin herself has like an obsidian form.
- 56:58[SPEAKER_00]: She turns into like an ebbin black like slate and she can create gollums from rocks and she becomes the guardian of this place which is what Haven is built on.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_00]: It's very beautifully written.
- 57:09[SPEAKER_00]: I really like the Henry of Benjamin character a lot actually.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's part of the new village.
- 57:13[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think she's a shining star.
- 57:16[SPEAKER_01]: Also this weird sort of anti-hero is she on your side is she not I love her look and feel her backstory is so compelling.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_01]: I for a moment there was kind of excited I was like is she joining the outliers?
- 57:29[SPEAKER_01]: I thought it would have been a cool addition to the team because she's such a captivating character
- 57:33[SPEAKER_02]: Well, and so, yeah, I think it's really cool too, because it starts off.
- 57:37[SPEAKER_02]: You're thinking Henrietta is the one who's leading them towards this, you know, dark design that Hotoru is taking everybody to, but it's actually Shuvarox speaking through her.
- 57:46[SPEAKER_02]: So the whole time, she's just been like, Henrietta's like, no girl.
- 57:49[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I want to stay.
- 57:50[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I want to, my family's here, my love is here.
- 57:53[SPEAKER_02]: Everything about the dark arteries, fine.
- 57:54[SPEAKER_02]: Let these fucking people, like, continue to suffer as they actually should.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_02]: Like, obviously, like,
- 57:59[SPEAKER_02]: Burning Witch is burning new, and it's like these horrible human beings making such horrible decisions for their close family members really deserve eternal damnation in that way.
- 58:07[SPEAKER_00]: And Charlotte looks like this death god that gets a presence in death dream for a bit.
- 58:11[SPEAKER_00]: Now this story gets played out in the future in the age of revelation storyline, which is not part of the timeline.
- 58:18[SPEAKER_00]: Um, we got to talk about the scene in 14, uh, Calico goes with the girl with her team like she's loyal to all of them and when they get inside she starts to have a panic attack.
- 58:27[SPEAKER_00]: I'm in this realm of the undead and, uh, she's hiding something.
- 58:31[SPEAKER_00]: She can't pass.
- 58:31[SPEAKER_00]: Man thing is here.
- 58:32[SPEAKER_00]: She can't pass unless she reveals a truth.
- 58:35[SPEAKER_00]: My horse ember my real horse.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_00]: He died in the fire.
- 58:39[SPEAKER_00]: My only friend he died.
- 58:41[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what that thing outside it is.
- 58:43[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what it is.
- 58:44[SPEAKER_00]: So we reveal like she's got an undead horse.
- 58:47[SPEAKER_01]: We don't know what the group would do this as yet, but in that, that was a big shock and I loved it.
- 58:53[SPEAKER_01]: I love, I love that twist.
- 58:56[SPEAKER_01]: So she came.
- 58:57[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, is this a corpse she's carrying around?
- 58:59[SPEAKER_01]: Is this just a weird goat?
- 59:00[SPEAKER_01]: Can she summon ghosts?
- 59:02[SPEAKER_01]: It just asked a million different questions after which I love.
- 59:06[SPEAKER_00]: She's got an EV powered ghost horse.
- 59:09[SPEAKER_00]: It's fine.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_00]: It's easy.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_00]: You see,
- 59:12[SPEAKER_02]: It is even more insane to me that when you match up the idea that she had admitted possibly that before she shut the fire and then she's like, why did you get the horse out girl?
- 59:23[SPEAKER_02]: Like what are you doing?
- 59:24[SPEAKER_02]: Like what do you like?
- 59:24[SPEAKER_02]: Your best friend for us dying that time.
- 59:27[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what's going on?
- 59:29[SPEAKER_01]: It just opens up so many questions to how her powers work.
- 59:33[SPEAKER_01]: How are they related to Ember?
- 59:34[SPEAKER_01]: Are they related to Ember?
- 59:36[SPEAKER_01]: Are they related to death?
- 59:37[SPEAKER_01]: Are they like, it's so many more questions that I'm just fascinated by.
- 59:41[SPEAKER_02]: But in this run, they even ask like, or like, in this sequence, this four story, four issue storyline, they're like, well, Ken, you know, the horse doesn't come in until the end.
- 59:50[SPEAKER_02]: And they're like, can you use your powers?
- 59:51[SPEAKER_02]: She's like, mmm, I don't know.
- 59:54[SPEAKER_02]: Also leaving that open too.
- 59:56[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of mystery here in issue 15.
- 59:59[SPEAKER_00]: They all get goffloops when Been armor for them all.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_02]: It's great So then they've got holes it.
- 1:00:06[SPEAKER_02]: That's my favorite line.
- 1:00:07[SPEAKER_01]: She's like this has a pulse Like that's or if I think you're out.
- 1:00:11[SPEAKER_01]: Is this a goblin?
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not adding those lines.
- 1:00:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, just goblin skin
- 1:00:15[SPEAKER_02]: She does also an issue 15, she admits her love for Jitter when they're like really fighting.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_02]: So I think that's a great character development.
- 1:00:23[SPEAKER_02]: So cute, they're both so excited.
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_02]: And then like in 16, it's funny because Calico and Jitter are both really defenseless.
- 1:00:30[SPEAKER_02]: And they're just kind of just hanging out until everyone else takes care of stuff.
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_02]: But again, she's obsessed with what her mama said about Goblins having sex with witches.
- 1:00:39[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so they're in the afterlife of black mutants who've extended from slavery.
- 1:00:44[SPEAKER_00]: And she's pissed off.
- 1:00:46[SPEAKER_00]: She turns the Wolverine says, you lied to me.
- 1:00:48[SPEAKER_00]: You lied to me.
- 1:00:49[SPEAKER_00]: Mama said, Mama said she said mutants were made from goblins who live underground having sex with witches.
- 1:00:55[SPEAKER_00]: What are these things if not goblins living in the dirt?
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_00]: Do you know why I was so proud of me abutant?
- 1:01:00[SPEAKER_00]: Because it meant I wasn't one of them.
- 1:01:03[SPEAKER_02]: Now, we're going to assume she's talking about undead creatures and not black people.
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_02]: Because it wasn't, yeah, white women get a lot of passes, but I really want to assume positive intent on this.
- 1:01:16[SPEAKER_00]: because fuck your mama back a Simone for that assignment for that, that's not enough to serve any of these.
- 1:01:22[SPEAKER_02]: We also get like a zombie ghost horse for him through what's saying George of Capodotia, which I didn't fully understand.
- 1:01:29[SPEAKER_02]: Again, another flame-based flame for him.
- 1:01:33[SPEAKER_01]: I did on fire.
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_02]: But it does, it does, I wrote that on my notes, wrote Schuverock, more like Schuverock, because she got the Schuverock, it's very scared of Calico's horse.
- 1:01:44[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, I don't know.
- 1:01:46[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:01:46[SPEAKER_00]: So St. George of Capadocia was a Christian martyr and a soldier in the Roman Empire.
- 1:01:51[SPEAKER_00]: Believe to have been born in the third century.
- 1:01:55[SPEAKER_00]: I, uh, I'm not going to look up more of this guy.
- 1:01:58[SPEAKER_00]: His name is George of Capadocia.
- 1:02:00[SPEAKER_00]: If anybody is Catholic out there.
- 1:02:02[SPEAKER_00]: He was appointed as Bishop in 357 after the Emperor's death.
- 1:02:07[SPEAKER_00]: The city, the people of the city turned against George and murdered him and his officers.
- 1:02:11[SPEAKER_00]: So apparently he's been elevated to St.
- 1:02:14[SPEAKER_00]: Hood, and that's why she has an undead zombie horse form.
- 1:02:17[SPEAKER_02]: Wait, go, but go down to the side of you.
- 1:02:19[SPEAKER_02]: Of Wikipedia that says, him and his flying, flying, flying horse.
- 1:02:24[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe.
- 1:02:25[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think that's mayor.
- 1:02:29[SPEAKER_00]: Um, now let's jump over to the Hellfire vigil.
- 1:02:31[SPEAKER_00]: Am I cutting you off Adam?
- 1:02:33[SPEAKER_02]: No, no.
- 1:02:33[SPEAKER_00]: Hellfire vigil was like the all the books coming together for like an annual special.
- 1:02:37[SPEAKER_00]: I actually like this issue.
- 1:02:38[SPEAKER_00]: I know there were some criticism.
- 1:02:40[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, Calico and Jitter get to dance there, which is adorable.
- 1:02:43[SPEAKER_00]: Then we get the next story arc, which is 17 through 21.
- 1:02:46[SPEAKER_00]: Ryan, do you want to take over on this one?
- 1:02:47[SPEAKER_00]: Murdered in you, Tina.
- 1:02:49[SPEAKER_01]: This is a little arc that involves a new mutant, a new character, a new villain called Mutina.
- 1:02:57[SPEAKER_01]: So the outliers decide to go see a horror film, a slasher film called Murder Me Mutina.
- 1:03:03[SPEAKER_01]: During the film, Jitter and her get a little closer.
- 1:03:06[SPEAKER_01]: because she doesn't like scary movies.
- 1:03:08[SPEAKER_01]: That night, I think she's having a little bit of nightmares.
- 1:03:10[SPEAKER_01]: She can't sleep well.
- 1:03:12[SPEAKER_01]: She's really, she's really uneasy about, quote, I guess, mutina and what she's doing to society and what people are thinking about her.
- 1:03:21[SPEAKER_01]: And when they, one thing that I really like is when they leave the theater, Kyle Coe just simply says,
- 1:03:27[SPEAKER_02]: Are we monsters?
- 1:03:28[SPEAKER_01]: She's like, she's always going through that crisis, you know?
- 1:03:32[SPEAKER_01]: And I think she takes one step forward and then two steps back constantly.
- 1:03:36[SPEAKER_01]: So it's sad to see that she's still going down that path.
- 1:03:40[SPEAKER_00]: Because when she has a nightmare that night, she climbs into Jitter's room and sleeps at the foot of her bed.
- 1:03:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so cute.
- 1:03:50[SPEAKER_01]: So basically she confides in jitter and they're not, it's not sitting with them well.
- 1:03:54[SPEAKER_01]: So they decide to go confront mutina, which is a movie star, which I guess they just go find where she is to confront a movie star.
- 1:04:04[SPEAKER_00]: Before that, they confront the bully at school.
- 1:04:06[SPEAKER_00]: And we don't see what the form is, but Becca gets like a fiery undead like Satan horse, but then turns into like an angel of light.
- 1:04:15[SPEAKER_00]: Horse to take the guitar on a ride, it's very cute.
- 1:04:20[SPEAKER_01]: To me that that moment where they're at school they go they go to their locker and they say it says go away Mutina on jitters lockers.
- 1:04:28[SPEAKER_01]: She freaks out and then turns into this like dark horse form and then because I think her powers are very related to her emotions Once she is comforted by jitters, she goes to this more like holy angel sort of Pegasus form
- 1:04:42[SPEAKER_01]: So I thought I was really interesting to see how her her emotions are inherently Powering her powers, too, which I mean a lot of me and her like that.
- 1:04:52[SPEAKER_00]: So they confront the movie star.
- 1:04:53[SPEAKER_00]: The, the, the Tisha Lee loathe is her name, a mutina.
- 1:04:57[SPEAKER_00]: And Calico says, You're the rottenest peach on the tree lady.
- 1:05:03[SPEAKER_02]: By the way, I love mutina as a character.
- 1:05:04[SPEAKER_02]: I think that again, Gail is great at creating characters and then never really telling you what their power sets or power levels are because you teen, I'm kind of like, she's so strong and yet she's mostly just like a knife wielding maniac, like a lot to it.
- 1:05:21[SPEAKER_02]: But I'm just, she just always has the upper hand.
- 1:05:24[SPEAKER_00]: It is, she is a mutant, but she's made a film about like mutants being scary monsters and then the PR goes bad and in the movie she's a serial killer, like she's obsessed with her reputation and she like hates mutants, but later her PR team wants her to join the X-Men.
- 1:05:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think her powers are like, she's like telepathic a little bit, but also like she can teleport through the darkness and she's got like a little anime mask and a creepy blade anyway, she's fine.
- 1:05:52[SPEAKER_01]: definitely sword is related to she might be a master of swords or something like that too because when they confront her the fight ensues between them and uh calico goes uh i can't call ember because quote he hates knives which is a ghost so what do we do but i love it
- 1:06:11[SPEAKER_00]: So in 18, Becca has a bad dream about mutina wakes up, takes her dinosaur downstairs, gambit wakes up and goes, uh, horse girls up again.
- 1:06:22[SPEAKER_01]: It's just, it's basically she's sleepwalking too.
- 1:06:26[SPEAKER_01]: So she's whatever happened with her mutina, it's really stayed with her.
- 1:06:30[SPEAKER_01]: So they go back to her room.
- 1:06:31[SPEAKER_01]: And they see that she's having these nightmares.
- 1:06:34[SPEAKER_01]: They see that her bed is actually slashed apart because she's having these terrible nightmares with mutina, meaning something's manifesting while she's unconsciously like sleeping.
- 1:06:44[SPEAKER_01]: So something crazy is going on.
- 1:06:45[SPEAKER_02]: But we watch a lot of the nightmare on Elm Streets, the sense.
- 1:06:51[SPEAKER_00]: I used to, if I, like, I used to have horror dreams about any scary show I'd see before I went to bed as a kid, like, I, again, I never slashed up my mattress, but I get it.
- 1:07:00[SPEAKER_00]: Polter guys, maybe 19 or 19 years.
- 1:07:02[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Polter guys, you, like, and that PG movie no less horror fire.
- 1:07:08[SPEAKER_00]: And then we have 19, where Outlaw shows up, yay!
- 1:07:11[SPEAKER_01]: So Alon Deadpool team up to apparently take down the Louisiana X-Men.
- 1:07:16[SPEAKER_01]: But the outliers do not hold back, they beat the shit out of Deadpool and Alon.
- 1:07:22[SPEAKER_01]: They do, they don't care at all.
- 1:07:24[SPEAKER_01]: I think Deadpool at one point literally says, hey, we're actually friends, and they do not hold back, they don't care at all.
- 1:07:36[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy.
- 1:07:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's a pretty brutal fight.
- 1:07:39[SPEAKER_00]: Outlaw, Outlaw says, all right partners.
- 1:07:41[SPEAKER_00]: I'm fixing to get angry.
- 1:07:42[SPEAKER_00]: Little girl.
- 1:07:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a horse gal too.
- 1:07:44[SPEAKER_00]: But you've heard that thing at the end.
- 1:07:46[SPEAKER_00]: I'll take you down and ride him out myself.
- 1:07:48[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I love Gill writing outlaw.
- 1:07:51[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
- 1:07:53[SPEAKER_02]: I also love, I think I love the way you described your eye in because again compared to like other new or mute in teams from this this like universe right now or the kind of like era we're living in I just love how this team is always ready to fucking throw down like they don't give to shit they're never scared they're never worried they're never trying to assess the situation they're like fuck you get out of my
- 1:08:12[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, sorry.
- 1:08:13[SPEAKER_02]: I love the interpretation.
- 1:08:15[SPEAKER_01]: I love exceptional accent too, but they're literally going to school and then like training in like a dance classroom with Kitty Pride.
- 1:08:21[SPEAKER_01]: And these people are just beating the shit out of Deadpool.
- 1:08:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's it's it's it's not a day.
- 1:08:25[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it holds a gun to jitters head.
- 1:08:28[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, oh, fires are naming arrow for a Deadpool's head.
- 1:08:33[SPEAKER_00]: And then says are you ready to cheer?
- 1:08:35[SPEAKER_00]: Not going to say it again.
- 1:08:36[SPEAKER_00]: Get your grubby hands off my girlfriend.
- 1:08:43[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, and there a relationship is really so good because it's such a nice natural development.
- 1:08:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's not rushed.
- 1:08:48[SPEAKER_02]: And it's to be two new characters and have them connect like this.
- 1:08:51[SPEAKER_02]: It's just like it's wonderful.
- 1:08:53[SPEAKER_02]: You could, again, great writing from Gail.
- 1:08:54[SPEAKER_02]: Like you're following it the whole way and makes sense.
- 1:08:57[SPEAKER_02]: There's pieces like your bread crumb.
- 1:08:59[SPEAKER_02]: And then it's just like,
- 1:09:00[SPEAKER_02]: real.
- 1:09:00[SPEAKER_02]: It's really nice.
- 1:09:01[SPEAKER_00]: And then 21 starts or the issue 20 starts ransom's crazy back story.
- 1:09:05[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I do encourage people to read this because it is very fascinating to learn about ransom's story with Wolverine.
- 1:09:11[SPEAKER_01]: It's a kind of like it's an old kind of Western kind of team up, which is kind of fun.
- 1:09:15[SPEAKER_01]: but the side story with Calico is, she goes to school, isn't that a crazy thing?
- 1:09:20[SPEAKER_01]: She goes to school and then she has a really touching moment, definitely, yeah.
- 1:09:24[SPEAKER_01]: And basically, he's feeling a little bit like a little out of place so they comfort him.
- 1:09:30[SPEAKER_01]: It's a side story, but it is,
- 1:09:32[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you belong with us, you're a normal normal and you think she convinces him to go to the school dance with girl named Marles, who's a black girl in a wheelchair.
- 1:09:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like, it's a very cute little interactive scene.
- 1:09:41[SPEAKER_00]: Lucy on a vacuos drawing this series, or with these couple issues, which I love Lucy on us pencils every time.
- 1:09:48[SPEAKER_00]: And then we jump to Unbreakable X-Men, which is the age of revelation.
- 1:09:53[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, if I sum this up in like 10 seconds or less, Apocalypse made Doug Ramsay, the new Apocalypse, and we've now gone to a future where he's like conquered the world and mutants are living in little pockets.
- 1:10:04[SPEAKER_00]: And we give a three-issue arc written by Gale that picks up on themes for these characters, and it's excellent.
- 1:10:10[SPEAKER_00]: Tell us about this, Adam.
- 1:10:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so we've got a set up where Rogue has really taken on Galactus, then she sort of becomes Galactus by draining his energy, so she sort of off the grid, Gambit has formed a whole new team at Haven and it's like that spider girl, it's got Chelsea, it's got a variety of people
- 1:10:34[SPEAKER_02]: like it's not a team.
- 1:10:36[SPEAKER_02]: Are you need to care about our wonder about because what you're really just trying to get to is where the fuck are the outliers?
- 1:10:41[SPEAKER_02]: And it's very funny because an issue one, KELCO doesn't do anything, like she's just not there.
- 1:10:46[SPEAKER_00]: But then there's a thing running between this and the storm book, Rogue has split herself in two.
- 1:10:52[SPEAKER_00]: One is Rogue Red and one is Rogue Green.
- 1:10:54[SPEAKER_00]: And one goes anyway, Rogue absorbs the powers of Galactus, but then becomes a giant frozen Galactus
- 1:11:02[SPEAKER_00]: grieving her while also leading an X-Men team.
- 1:11:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's nuts.
- 1:11:07[SPEAKER_02]: A lot is a lot going on and he's also he now has lost his vision too.
- 1:11:10[SPEAKER_02]: He can't see, right?
- 1:11:12[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:11:13[SPEAKER_00]: And Shuvarak is threatening everyone.
- 1:11:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:11:17[SPEAKER_02]: Our favorite girl Henrietta comes back and unfortunately because of Henrietta coming back, we also have a Shuvarak overarching plot line that
- 1:11:24[SPEAKER_02]: You know, Giver, it's basically just like she's so angry at the people that have done things to be with us that she's going to kill everyone when she gets out including every mutant and it's like, all right, whatever we'll go.
- 1:11:36[SPEAKER_02]: But what I will say about this series that I love was that two issue two gives us the assembling of the actual outliers 10 years later.
- 1:11:54[SPEAKER_00]: enjoyed and temper temper from Jed McKay's group in ransom with like kissed at the Hellfire vigil in in this future.
- 1:12:00[SPEAKER_00]: They're like a couple with a kid.
- 1:12:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's cute.
- 1:12:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, no, and I think that their relationship is just so I think it's great in the actual regular 616 and I think it's great in this this transferring their relationship is
- 1:12:12[SPEAKER_02]: also something that's been kind of blossoming over a couple of different issues since that raid.
- 1:12:16[SPEAKER_00]: So we finally see Becca in as her adult form in full like a quest dream gear, living in her spot on a ranch full of like every it's like clones of her horse.
- 1:12:26[SPEAKER_00]: It's like full
- 1:12:27[SPEAKER_02]: But her line is like so dark and weird where she's like the spider girls are like, hey, what happened?
- 1:12:34[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, is your horse here?
- 1:12:34[SPEAKER_02]: I love them and she's like, Amber?
- 1:12:36[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, hello.
- 1:12:37[SPEAKER_02]: He's be around.
- 1:12:38[SPEAKER_02]: I made sure of it.
- 1:12:39[SPEAKER_02]: Like she's kind of gone back to it.
- 1:12:41[SPEAKER_02]: Like she really has the capacity and was right outside.
- 1:12:43[SPEAKER_00]: I had to be like, I'm like, I'm creating for me.
- 1:12:47[SPEAKER_02]: So we then again still no explanation like did she summon more ghosts?
- 1:12:51[SPEAKER_02]: Is her power the go like the horrors?
- 1:12:54[SPEAKER_02]: Why are there so many?
- 1:12:57[SPEAKER_00]: Even ten years later, and she and Jitter have broken up at some point, but she's invited back to the X-Men and she's excited because Jitter is gonna be there and issue three is narrated by her partially
- 1:13:06[SPEAKER_02]: flashback of the valve by all five members, Calico makes sure that Ember is included.
- 1:13:10[SPEAKER_02]: I really, the line that Guel writes is unscared, I'm not fine, but I love these people and they love me.
- 1:13:16[SPEAKER_02]: Like what, I mean, that's literally how we all've been living since 2016, I feel.
- 1:13:20[SPEAKER_00]: She says, uh, she says in the captions, Mama warned me about the goblin people.
- 1:13:24[SPEAKER_00]: She said, Becca, those demons will try to charm you, try to begile you, then they will make you make little demon babies.
- 1:13:31[SPEAKER_00]: I've been scared of them my whole life.
- 1:13:33[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, she's, uh, I don't know.
- 1:13:35[SPEAKER_02]: I wrote it in my, I wrote it in my notes.
- 1:13:37[SPEAKER_02]: War goblin baby sex.
- 1:13:40[SPEAKER_00]: I wish you had prepared me more Mama, I never know how I'm supposed to be, I never know what's normal, I'm scared, I'm not fine.
- 1:13:49[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sitting in a circle like a covenant of witches and it feels like the temperature dropped 20 degrees.
- 1:13:55[SPEAKER_00]: I love the voice she gives her and then they have to fight the death dot again.
- 1:13:58[SPEAKER_02]: Right, well they, so you do get the EV evolution because she can summon them to be sea horse forms, essentially for the embers.
- 1:14:05[SPEAKER_02]: And so they get to go reach Atlantis and then they like trans back transform back into regular horse form because apparently you can't suck it like a sea horse flame land is how X man is they ride the sea horses into the ocean fucking great it's this is great
- 1:14:22[SPEAKER_02]: I was at Calico, there is a good, and it's a good, I think you mentioned the whole quote between, by the way, you're Gambit when you do it in your regular voice sounds like your role or a story.
- 1:14:30[SPEAKER_02]: I know.
- 1:14:31[SPEAKER_02]: It's a child.
- 1:14:32[SPEAKER_02]: You must accept your mutant job, but Cal, I think I'm glad you mentioned that, that quote because it comes back in this where Calico's like, don't throw your life away Gambit because he's about the face off against name or, and she was like, you know, you taught me how to be a mute and you taught me how to be a person.
- 1:14:47[SPEAKER_02]: It was all there, like it's in the book which I think is really cool.
- 1:14:50[SPEAKER_00]: So they're fighting sugar like, and then Amber gets her, I keep saying Amber, Calico gets her Oprah moment.
- 1:14:55[SPEAKER_00]: You get a number and you get a number and you get a number.
- 1:14:57[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone gets an undead like firehorse to write on.
- 1:15:01[SPEAKER_02]: It's so crazy.
- 1:15:02[SPEAKER_02]: This is such a weird.
- 1:15:03[SPEAKER_02]: And then as you wrap up, they're the actual like story life when I'm breakable, that fucking rogue comes back.
- 1:15:08[SPEAKER_02]: Green rogue comes back, but she's also gigantic for a time because she's still's gone.
- 1:15:13[SPEAKER_02]: Black dispowers, and then she shrinks, then everything's okay, it doesn't make any.
- 1:15:19[SPEAKER_00]: This is an excellent series.
- 1:15:21[SPEAKER_00]: In the most recent three issues prior to this, Gail has raised writing the outliers all sitting down and Marcus St. Juniors is telling a raw-hide kid's story and is weaving all of the kids into it.
- 1:15:33[SPEAKER_00]: And
- 1:15:34[SPEAKER_00]: We get the Calico kid.
- 1:15:35[SPEAKER_00]: She's like the best equestrian in the West.
- 1:15:38[SPEAKER_00]: Like all the characters are woven into this little western story with Rawhide, which is perfect and unplanned.
- 1:15:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm doing the trial of the Rawhide kid and then we get a Rawhide kid's story at X-Men.
- 1:15:47[SPEAKER_00]: Right as it's all coming out, which is delicious.
- 1:15:50[SPEAKER_00]: I am realizing as we're talking and we've gone much longer than I expected if I'm honest.
- 1:15:54[SPEAKER_00]: I like this series a lot.
- 1:15:56[SPEAKER_00]: What I'm thinking about it with you guys has made me appreciate it more.
- 1:15:59[SPEAKER_00]: I am excited to see where it goes next.
- 1:16:02[SPEAKER_00]: I think I like it more than I realized.
- 1:16:04[SPEAKER_02]: I would say besides night crawlers love life, which is like, I don't really give a shit about because it's a normie.
- 1:16:09[SPEAKER_02]: I think the series is wonderful.
- 1:16:11[SPEAKER_00]: That crawler's dating a single mom named Mackenzie.
- 1:16:14[SPEAKER_00]: And she just likes Banfeng.
- 1:16:15[SPEAKER_00]: And you know, we find what we find.
- 1:16:18[SPEAKER_01]: All those jealousy atom, right?
- 1:16:20[SPEAKER_02]: Isn't that why I now write as a single person.
- 1:16:22[SPEAKER_02]: I hate everything that's happening.
- 1:16:24[SPEAKER_02]: But I will actually, I will say I don't like the 616 version.
- 1:16:27[SPEAKER_02]: The age of revelation through what is it the last Wolverine or your neighborhood friendly neighborhood Wolverine at your relation.
- 1:16:33[SPEAKER_02]: Nightcrawler's storyline and sort of flash forward with McKenzie.
- 1:16:36[SPEAKER_02]: It's absolutely great.
- 1:16:37[SPEAKER_02]: It's so incredible.
- 1:16:38[SPEAKER_02]: It's so really well done.
- 1:16:39[SPEAKER_02]: I loved it a lot.
- 1:16:40[SPEAKER_02]: Um, and to be honest with this series, also in the Age of Revelation, I loved, um, the outliers being like jaded washed up, where they were like getting back together.
- 1:16:48[SPEAKER_02]: Like I thought it was so fun to watch their personalities in the future and like, well, who they could become these characters are so good.
- 1:16:54[SPEAKER_01]: The series is good because of these new characters.
- 1:16:57[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, sure.
- 1:16:58[SPEAKER_01]: The characterization of some of our classics haven't classic rogue voice back through Gale is amazing.
- 1:17:04[SPEAKER_01]: Haven't gambit talked like a moron all the time is so fun.
- 1:17:09[SPEAKER_01]: But I think where the reason I'm checking into this book so much is because of these new characters to find out their next arc.
- 1:17:17[SPEAKER_01]: And also the greatest comics that have ever come out, throw in a million different mysteries and maybe there's so many mysteries with this crew of
- 1:17:26[SPEAKER_00]: In the Newark, there's another new supervillain, like a woman who's controlling the monsters, roguets this moment where she knocks Elsa bloodstone down and is like, sometimes gals just don't get along.
- 1:17:39[SPEAKER_01]: amazing.
- 1:17:40[SPEAKER_01]: She kills dialogue.
- 1:17:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's so good.
- 1:17:42[SPEAKER_01]: But I think the biggest enigma in this pack is calico.
- 1:17:46[SPEAKER_01]: As soon as I saw that horse curl, I was like, I'm hooked for life.
- 1:17:49[SPEAKER_02]: I am, you're right, though.
- 1:17:51[SPEAKER_02]: I think, you know, I'm missing a little, I need more jitter, but jitter doesn't seem to have much mystery besides a bunch of girls used to push her head of the toilet and then she turned on karate and beat the shit out of them.
- 1:18:02[SPEAKER_01]: Or she becomes the
- 1:18:05[SPEAKER_02]: But Chelsea, as the handling does really make a lot, I mean, I would hope it wouldn't be any of them because the none of them really fit besides maybe death dream and even then it feels too obvious.
- 1:18:14[SPEAKER_02]: So I love the concept of it being kind of over all red herrings to begin with.
- 1:18:17[SPEAKER_00]: This isn't yet, there's a lot of budding subplots and I hope they all pay off.
- 1:18:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's smart.
- 1:18:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's long form.
- 1:18:24[SPEAKER_00]: I like it.
- 1:18:25[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a fan of this book.
- 1:18:26[SPEAKER_00]: And in the original, in the Unbreakable X-Men story, Chelsea
- 1:18:33[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, so for those of you that want to follow this kind of lesser known, she's been kind of sneak up on us, I think.
- 1:18:38[SPEAKER_00]: There's a, there's a mutant here that we haven't been watching for in Chelsea St.
- 1:18:43[SPEAKER_02]: Junior's, but dome in the future has the power to encase, they encase the ground for them to be able to fight underwater.
- 1:18:53[SPEAKER_02]: like it's sort of like a force field because they were using it to breathe and they were also using it to literally fight on the floor of the sea.
- 1:18:59[SPEAKER_00]: I guess she skids, I guess, but she also gets to ride a sea horse.
- 1:19:05[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I like Calico more than I expected.
- 1:19:09[SPEAKER_00]: I love these conversations because it really solidifies the characters thoughts.
- 1:19:12[SPEAKER_00]: And now I'm more excited about Gelsamone's X-Men than I was before, which is a nice feeling.
- 1:19:18[SPEAKER_00]: I hope it's been fun for readers to listen to this.
- 1:19:21[SPEAKER_00]: I want to interview Gail one day Gail doesn't like doing podcasts, but I want to say, what do you love about Calgirls?
- 1:19:26[SPEAKER_00]: I just want to ask her for something.
- 1:19:28[SPEAKER_00]: She's using a lot of Western motif and all of this.
- 1:19:31[SPEAKER_01]: I think for Alphate as the premier cosplaying calico that's out there, which I've identified as myself.
- 1:19:39[SPEAKER_01]: I went to uncanny experience and a few other cons as calico.
- 1:20:07[SPEAKER_01]: I prefer, she's the reason that that's the reason I invited you to this episode, but I prefer your Trish Tilbee if I'm honest, or your Valerie, or my baby, because of us, so while we were at one of the cons, Gail was actually there, and you better believe I ran up to her, like a crazy horse girl, and was like, I'm Calica, just the biggest fan-girling out, and she was very nice, but looked overwhelmed by me, which I think was the right approach, you know?
- 1:20:34[SPEAKER_01]: Do we have other horse forms you're desperate to see oh God an ice one would be nice a nice form a Minister, I want to see her like get into something.
- 1:20:45[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:20:46[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 1:20:47[SPEAKER_01]: Becca Becca's gonna go Amber little Sebastian form.
- 1:20:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, exactly.
- 1:20:53[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god.
- 1:20:55[SPEAKER_02]: I would live for that kind of reference
- 1:21:03[SPEAKER_02]: That's I mean, yeah, give me the funny ones.
- 1:21:05[SPEAKER_02]: You know, we could do all the EV elements, but at the end of the day, we got to get a goof once in a while.
- 1:21:10[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:21:11[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, there's like theory.
- 1:21:13[SPEAKER_00]: There's like all these different kinds of like magic that could be incorporated.
- 1:21:16[SPEAKER_00]: Juggernaut was a bold form.
- 1:21:18[SPEAKER_00]: That was fun.
- 1:21:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 1:21:19[SPEAKER_00]: Now on Grimmelkin Lane, watch for our final episode this month on the Patreon on our western theme.
- 1:21:26[SPEAKER_00]: My friend Matt Parrott from Escape the Mojo vs.

- 1:21:37[SPEAKER_00]: So please join us for that one.
- 1:21:38[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of those deep educational ones that you should hear.
- 1:21:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's a little adjacent to X-Men, obviously, but very interesting.
- 1:21:48[SPEAKER_00]: And then in May, we get to do the trial of Janet Van Dyne, one of my all-time favorite characters.
- 1:21:54[SPEAKER_00]: And the theme on the Patreon is the category of the only girl on the team.

- 1:23:32[SPEAKER_02]: Lee, yes, like I, again, I, I, you're so spot on, Shabby.
- 1:23:35[SPEAKER_02]: Like this is really, I don't want people to just, what is it called, throw away all of from the ashes.
- 1:23:40[SPEAKER_02]: And there's a lot of tension around, obviously a post-Grecoa and then now we're in the, what's it, Shadows of tomorrow or the
- 1:23:47[SPEAKER_02]: it's just like it's don't don't throw the good out with the bad because I don't want everyone to describe like she like jail deserves tons of credit the artwork's great storyline's great like I want I want people to recognize what was so good about parts of yes memorable in really fun story arcs incredible dialogue it's it's worth pursuing and and I love jads book too it's really it's really excellent a lot of the solo books have been great
- 1:24:08[SPEAKER_00]: too.
- 1:24:08[SPEAKER_00]: Sad luck was amazing.
- 1:24:09[SPEAKER_00]: Magic was great.
