Speaker 3: Our buddy from Union Mission, is going to be making
1:50
Speaker 3: a return appearance on the show today. Plus so Charleston
1:53
Speaker 3: City Councilor Chad Robinson. Now last night Charleston City Council
1:56
Speaker 3: met and one of the issues that you're probably going
2:00
Speaker 3: to be hearing a whole lot about over the coming weeks,
2:03
Speaker 3: especially as we head into the new year is in
2:05
Speaker 3: proposed panhandling ordinance within the city limits. Now, it's not
2:09
Speaker 3: necessarily what you think. It has more to do with
2:13
Speaker 3: people standing around busy roadways and asking for money. Charleston
2:18
Speaker 3: City Council and Chad Robinson one of the folks that
2:20
Speaker 3: is at the forefront of this discussion. He's going to
2:22
Speaker 3: join us to talk about that a little bit later on. Plus,
2:24
Speaker 3: we now know who will coach the Mountaineers in their
2:26
Speaker 3: bowl game. It's offensive coordinator Chad Scott, and I'll be
2:29
Speaker 3: interested to talk to Chad about that. Chad Robinson, that
2:32
Speaker 3: is because he's also a big Mountaineer guy. So we'll
2:34
Speaker 3: get into that. Busher calls and text to welcome to

2:46
Speaker 3: When do I have a discussion with University of Charleston folks.
2:48
Speaker 3: They're doing something rather innovative, if you'll pardon the pun,
2:52
Speaker 3: with the downtown Charleston and their use their their innovation hub,
2:56
Speaker 3: which is Downtown Charleston. I had the chance recently to
2:58
Speaker 3: tour the facility. In fact, I sit on the board
3:00
Speaker 3: down there and had a chance to get get get
3:04
Speaker 3: the full lay of the land, so to speak, down there,
3:06
Speaker 3: not long ago. I just I think it's a wonderful
3:08
Speaker 3: thing for employers and for job seekers in the area.
3:11
Speaker 3: Doctor Russell Lasmar did I get it right?
3:13
Speaker 5: Yes? You did that?
3:14
Speaker 3: All Right is with us right now and he's the
3:16
Speaker 3: program director for the Business Accelerat Accelerator program at the
3:20
Speaker 3: University of Charleston's Downtown Innovation Hubb. It joins us now,
3:23
Speaker 3: Good morning, welcome to the show, sir, well, thank you
3:25
Speaker 3: for having me, thank you for being it. First of all,
3:28
Speaker 3: for those who may not know exactly exactly what all
3:31
Speaker 3: goes on at this downtown the Innovation Hub of University
3:35
Speaker 3: of Charleston, let's start there before we get to the
3:37
Speaker 3: Accelerator Accelerator program.
3:38
Speaker 6: Okay, it's important to differentiate between the academic side of
3:44
Speaker 6: the University of Charles and the business facing aspect of
3:48
Speaker 6: the university. And the downtown Innovation Hub is by design,
3:53
Speaker 6: our central location where we can launch out into the
3:55
Speaker 6: business community. We can host events, folks, have conferences, meetings,
4:02
Speaker 6: We have space that's available for lease, but the Business
4:06
Speaker 6: Accelerator Program is our flagship program right now, and we
4:09
Speaker 6: are exploring avenues for what's next another program that we
4:14
Speaker 6: can bolt onto that to fill another gap in the
4:17
Speaker 6: business needs of you know, the greater Charleston area.
4:20
Speaker 3: And that's what we want to really get into is
4:22
Speaker 3: to talk about this Business Accelerator program, who's it for
4:25
Speaker 3: and what primarily does it do?
4:28
Speaker 6: Right? Who's it for is easy if you're a growth
4:31
Speaker 6: oriented small business in and around Charleston, so the greater
4:36
Speaker 6: Charleston metropolitan area, this program has something for you. So
4:43
Speaker 6: growth oriented small businesses, we've had ranging from I've been
4:49
Speaker 6: in business for a year, I've started hiring outside of
4:52
Speaker 6: friends and family, I have revenues to my business is
4:56
Speaker 6: over one hundred years old, and I need new ideas,
5:00
Speaker 6: need a new way of looking at things. So when
5:03
Speaker 6: when you look at how long the firm's been in business,
5:06
Speaker 6: is that that's not real important. What's is is important
5:10
Speaker 6: that they're they're growth oriented, they're hiring, they have revenues
5:13
Speaker 6: and and and they're looking for some ideas, some best
5:17
Speaker 6: in class you know, uh uh, access to content that
5:22
Speaker 6: can help them look at issues differently.
5:25
Speaker 3: And talk about where this whole idea came from. What
5:29
Speaker 3: did this concept originate?
5:32
Speaker 6: We were looking for an opportunity to focus on the
5:36
Speaker 6: business community with with with the flagship office with you know,
5:40
Speaker 6: to make this.
5:41
Speaker 5: Move and UH.
5:43
Speaker 6: We were looking for a gap where there is UH,
5:47
Speaker 6: where there are services lacking in the community for the
5:50
Speaker 6: private businesses. Now, there are a ton of low and
5:54
Speaker 6: no cost services available through the economic ecosystem. Those folks
6:01
Speaker 6: do an incredible job, but when you get to a
6:04
Speaker 6: certain point and you've outgrown what those resources can offer,
6:09
Speaker 6: there's no there's no runway for you. Those services have
6:13
Speaker 6: been exhausted. You're pretty much left to figure it out
6:16
Speaker 6: on your own. So what we did was we devised
6:20
Speaker 6: a program by which we can get best in class
6:22
Speaker 6: content in front of these businesses that have already exhausted
6:28
Speaker 6: all of the resources that are available from the startup
6:31
Speaker 6: ecosystem or they're established businesses. So we divide this. We
6:38
Speaker 6: we created the program to touch as many aspects of
6:42
Speaker 6: the practice as possible. From inspiring an innovative mindset, we
6:50
Speaker 6: have an interactive piece of content as it's specifically designed
6:54
Speaker 6: to show people how to create an a pipeline of
6:59
Speaker 6: in a within their business, so that it's not something
7:02
Speaker 6: you just wake up one day and say, I want
7:04
Speaker 6: to innovate. It's a practice, it's a process, and we
7:07
Speaker 6: teach them how to do that. So we have a
7:09
Speaker 6: series of modules each or a deep dive into different
7:12
Speaker 6: aspects of what can be beneficial for their practice.
7:16
Speaker 3: One of the things that I think is really fascinating
7:19
Speaker 3: right now what's going on in America, and the listeners
7:22
Speaker 3: have heard me talk about this repeatedly, is that when
7:26
Speaker 3: it comes to things like this, like our higher education
7:29
Speaker 3: folks getting involved in our communities. For so long it
7:32
Speaker 3: was just the model of all right, we're going to
7:35
Speaker 3: produce students and we're going to send them out into
7:37
Speaker 3: the world. Now over the last ten fifteen years or so,
7:41
Speaker 3: and there's a lot of institutions in our area that
7:43
Speaker 3: are doing this right now, and they're getting involved with
7:45
Speaker 3: bringing the business community in is saying what can we
7:48
Speaker 3: do for you to help you out more? And I
7:51
Speaker 3: would imagine my next question was going to be how
7:53
Speaker 3: has this gone so far? And once the response has
7:55
Speaker 3: been from the business community, I would say it's probably
7:57
Speaker 3: been pretty dang good.
7:59
Speaker 6: Right, Yeah, pretty dang good is one way to put it.
8:03
Speaker 6: It's been resounding, it's been positive, we've been blessed, it's
8:08
Speaker 6: been wildly successful. We've learned a lot by getting feedback
8:13
Speaker 6: from these businesses that are going through the program on
8:15
Speaker 6: on how we can adjust it, tweak it to make
8:18
Speaker 6: it even more impactful for you know, subsequent businesses coming through.
8:22
Speaker 6: But yeah, it is an opportunity for us to address
8:26
Speaker 6: at the practitioner level, at the business level, which is
8:32
Speaker 6: it's just a version for a typical university's mindset. But
8:37
Speaker 6: it's important to mention that this six month program is
8:43
Speaker 6: a no cost to the company when we can can't
8:48
Speaker 6: argue with the price, well, it's about an eighty thousand
8:50
Speaker 6: dollars value in offering services, content and information. But we
8:54
Speaker 6: have been able to because the gap was clearly defined,
8:58
Speaker 6: because it's because there's a need, we were able to
9:03
Speaker 6: reach out and get grant funding from a variety of
9:07
Speaker 6: folks from the e DA to the Benedem Foundation, to
9:10
Speaker 6: the Elliott Family Foundation, and even the City of Charleston
9:14
Speaker 6: to provide this program. It's a six month long program,
9:17
Speaker 6: but to provide these services and this offering to the
9:21
Speaker 6: business community at no cost to.
9:23
Speaker 3: Them, it's an amazing program. I'm just learning about it myself.
9:26

9:39
Speaker 3: fresh air. Now, explain to us you kind of touched
9:42
Speaker 3: on a little bit. Explain to us the different parts
9:44
Speaker 3: of the program, the modules that you have to go through.
9:47
Speaker 6: It's a six month long program. It meets face to
9:51
Speaker 6: face one day each month, and each module or each
9:58
Speaker 6: session is a deep dive to an area that impacts
10:01
Speaker 6: the business, inspiring the innovative mindset. We actually in January,
10:08
Speaker 6: we're kicking off another cohort. We're going to have the
10:11
Speaker 6: president and CEO of the global Innovation Management Institutes coming
10:16
Speaker 6: down to deliver that content.
10:17
Speaker 5: So that's going to be a powerful, a powerful workshop.
10:22
Speaker 6: But that's going, as I said earlier, show folks how
10:26
Speaker 6: to consider innovation a process instead of a thing. That
10:30
Speaker 6: another module is a deep dive and it's a interactive workshop.
10:34
Speaker 6: It's a lot of fun. Usually ranks up there as
10:37
Speaker 6: the people's favorite on process improvements, how to identify, diagnose,
10:42
Speaker 6: and improve workflows within your business because in many cases
10:49
Speaker 6: workflows are well at work. Let's just continue doing it
10:52
Speaker 6: that way. It's not necessarily improving it, but this gives
10:55
Speaker 6: you the skills to be able to diagnose and correct those.
11:00
Speaker 6: Then we have deep dives into cash awareness cash efficiency.
11:04
Speaker 6: It's not an accounting class, it's not a bookkeeping class.
11:07
Speaker 6: It's how to understand what causes what related to cash
11:12
Speaker 6: flow in the business. And marketing module, not to say
11:18
Speaker 6: you know you need to market or digital marketing is
11:21
Speaker 6: where we need to go, but to help you be
11:23
Speaker 6: able to create start to craft a marketing guideline for
11:27
Speaker 6: yourself and a blueprint so you can move forward. And
11:31
Speaker 6: the final session we have a lot of fun with
11:33
Speaker 6: this one is the firms have the opportunity to present
11:37
Speaker 6: their business informed by everything that they've gone through the
11:40
Speaker 6: sixth model, the six months, in front of members of
11:46
Speaker 6: the financial stack in the community. So they get a
11:50
Speaker 6: chance to actually present their business to folks that control
11:54
Speaker 6: access to money. It's not a shark tank like a
11:57
Speaker 6: fish bowl, it's polite. We will have work with these
12:00
Speaker 6: folks on the mission, the vision, their values, their growth gap,
12:03
Speaker 6: what they plan on doing to fill that. All of
12:05
Speaker 6: that will be covered other six months. But then they
12:07
Speaker 6: get some feedback directly from the folks that have access
12:11
Speaker 6: to money, and that's a lot of that. I like
12:14
Speaker 6: that that's the best session of them all because they
12:16
Speaker 6: get to demonstrate what they've learned about themselves.
12:18
Speaker 3: And I would imagine that these businesses learn a lot
12:20
Speaker 3: from each other as well, not just from the folks
12:23
Speaker 3: facilitating these meetings, but they you can learn a lot
12:25
Speaker 3: by networking, so to speak, and by learning what worked
12:28
Speaker 3: for you, what didn't work for you. They kind of
12:30
Speaker 3: worked together on these things. Right before we close, I
12:33
Speaker 3: want to ask you of the program just received an award?
12:36
Speaker 3: Is that right?
12:37
Speaker 6: Yes we did, Yes, we did, and and and it's
12:40
Speaker 6: another blessing that came our way because we worked very
12:42
Speaker 6: hard to try to put together a program that would
12:45
Speaker 6: add value years beyond you know where we sit today.
12:50
Speaker 6: And we were just recognized by the Global Innovation Management
12:54
Speaker 6: Institute internationally as a top three ecosystem startup support organization.
13:01
Speaker 6: So we we're we're waiting for that trophy to show
13:04
Speaker 6: up any day. It's a good one, you know, just
13:06
Speaker 6: hopefully it's in time for our next cohort. It starts
13:09
Speaker 6: in January. We're still taking applications. We have a few
13:11
Speaker 6: slots open, and if anybody is interested in reaching out
13:16
Speaker 6: finding out more about the program, they can get ahold
13:18
Speaker 6: of us in one of three ways. They can get
13:20
Speaker 6: us on phone, email, or Facebook. Can I give them
13:23

Speaker 3: Hopey today. There is a new law in Ohio that
17:54
Speaker 3: prohibits Ohioans from using bathrooms that align with their gender identity.
18:00
Speaker 2: Now.
18:00
Speaker 3: In other words, if you're a man but identify as
18:03
Speaker 3: a woman or vice versa, now in Ohio you have
18:05
Speaker 3: to use the turlet as archie Bunker would say that

18:16
Speaker 3: We'll explain that further on the show. Plus Show Stevens

18:22
Speaker 3: been asked to come on Hoppy today to talk about
18:24

19:17
Speaker 3: Jason Quintreil, now of Union Mission. How are you, sir?
19:20
Speaker 5: I'm doing great man. How are you?
19:21
Speaker 3: Thank you for being here. Last time you were on,
19:24
Speaker 3: you were preparing for the annual Drumstick Dash on Thanksgiving morning.
19:28
Speaker 3: How did that go?
19:29
Speaker 5: It was wet, it was cold, but we had a thousand,
19:32
Speaker 5: We had a thousand racers. It was one thousand, a
19:34
Speaker 5: little over one thousand. It was great man, you.
19:37
Speaker 3: Were I think when I had you on the show,
19:39
Speaker 3: I think it was the day before Thanksgiving that you
19:40
Speaker 3: were on. I think there was a little bit of
19:42
Speaker 3: concern because of the weather. And I told you then
19:44
Speaker 3: that runners are basically crazy, as are golfers, and they
19:48
Speaker 3: don't care what the weather is. They're going to get
19:50
Speaker 3: out there and run by gully. You pulled in over
19:51
Speaker 3: a thousand people. Not too terribly bad.
19:54
Speaker 5: Not chabby at all. You were spot on, all.
19:56
Speaker 3: Right, So let's talk about the weather a little bit
20:00
Speaker 3: before we get into some other things. Obviously we're dealing
20:03
Speaker 3: now with some of the you know, coldest temperatures that
20:05
Speaker 3: we've had. It's not even officially wintertime yet. My folks
20:08
Speaker 3: in the weather business say it's called meteorological winter. But
20:11
Speaker 3: the official kick off on your calendar is not till,
20:14
Speaker 3: like you know, twenty first twenty seconds. But nonetheless, I mean,
20:17
Speaker 3: when I left my house this morning around seven, I
20:19
Speaker 3: think it was like twenty two to twenty three degrees.
20:22
Speaker 3: What happens to the folks that you A lot of
20:25
Speaker 3: the ones that you service when the weather gets cold
20:28
Speaker 3: like this.
20:28
Speaker 5: Yeah, so most of them will come into our almost
20:33
Speaker 5: shelter only on Solvan Way. They get fed, they get
20:38
Speaker 5: a bed, they get We do have expectations, you know.
20:42
Speaker 5: We push them and try to find jobs for them.
20:45
Speaker 5: We have barrier removals to try to get driver's license
20:48
Speaker 5: and birth certificates and try to move them in the
20:51
Speaker 5: right way to start getting back on their own.
20:56
Speaker 3: So it's old to me and to rush you. So
20:57
Speaker 3: what I'm saying is is you don't know necessarily when
21:00
Speaker 3: you open up your doors. I mean, obviously you want
21:03
Speaker 3: to take care of people and get them out of
21:04
Speaker 3: the cold or whatever. But there's there is an expectations
21:07
Speaker 3: from them that you're going to have to do something
21:08
Speaker 3: to either earn a spot here or at least show
21:11
Speaker 3: us that you're working towards something. Talk about that.
21:13
Speaker 5: Yeah, so that's the deal. So we give somebody about
21:15
Speaker 5: two weeks they come into our and this is just
21:17
Speaker 5: our men's shelter. We have many different ways in which
21:19
Speaker 5: we help people, but speaking of our men's shelter, we
21:22
Speaker 5: give somebody about a week to two weeks to get
21:24
Speaker 5: their feet underneath them, and then we start the expectation
21:27
Speaker 5: of what we call barrier removal all those things that
21:29
Speaker 5: are going to hold them back, finds, whatsoever, and we
21:33
Speaker 5: immediately start looking for employment. We immediately start getting them
21:37
Speaker 5: on the track with a meeting with a banker to
21:41
Speaker 5: learn about checking accounts and savings accounts, and we want
21:44
Speaker 5: to start that process as soon as possible. Yeah, there's
21:47
Speaker 5: definite expectations.
21:48
Speaker 3: Talk with Jason Contrell again from Union mission of a

Speaker 3: Please make sure you do. The website is Dblightnight dot
22:08

22:12
Speaker 3: got going on?
22:12
Speaker 2: Man?
22:12
Speaker 10: Man?
22:13
Speaker 5: We do so with WCHS, the TV station. We have
22:16
Speaker 5: been doing the Christmas Shop for twenty plus years with
22:19
Speaker 5: these folks, and that has started already and applications are
22:24
Speaker 5: still going on right now. We've got in, We've got
22:27
Speaker 5: right now one hundred and fifty actually closer to two
22:30
Speaker 5: hundred families signed up now, but we are still taking applications.
22:34
Speaker 5: If you know of a single mom that's struggling, if
22:37
Speaker 5: you know of a family that's struggling to get Christmas
22:39
Speaker 5: gifts for their kids, please call us three zero four
22:42
Speaker 5: nine two five zero three six six. You can ask
22:46
Speaker 5: directly for Katie Bush. She'll get the application to you
22:49
Speaker 5: and get that taken care of. And we also if
22:52
Speaker 5: you want to donate to this, please call us, or
22:54
Speaker 5: you can go online and do that as well. If
22:56
Speaker 5: you want to go shopping for these kids. The ages
22:59
Speaker 5: are zero to six and Man we'll take. We've got
23:03
Speaker 5: bikes already, we've got dolls, We've got all kinds of
23:05
Speaker 5: toys right now already.
23:07
Speaker 3: And sometimes people I think, and I think you and
23:11
Speaker 3: I talked about this possibly last time you were here,
23:13
Speaker 3: that there's sometimes there's a need for the older kids too,
23:16
Speaker 3: because because they kind of I say, kids, teenagers, whatever
23:20
Speaker 3: you want to call them, they kind of get forgotten
23:22
Speaker 3: in all this.
23:23
Speaker 5: Yeah, the thirteen to sixteen age group. You're exactly right, Dave,
23:26
Speaker 5: get they get kind of left out a little bit.
23:28
Speaker 5: It's fun to buy little kids, two, three, four or
23:30
Speaker 5: five year olds. It's fun to buy those gifts. And
23:33
Speaker 5: so people don't really know exactly what a teenager wants,
23:36
Speaker 5: or maybe they think of they have to get an
23:38
Speaker 5: iPad or they have to get an Apple watch or something.
23:40
Speaker 5: That's definitely not the case.
23:42
Speaker 3: What are some of the things that people could get?
23:43
Speaker 5: Basketballs, football, it's clothing, my goodness, yeah, clothing, knives I had.
23:47
Speaker 5: It was funny yesterday I was sitting in my office
23:49
Speaker 5: and I had a bunch of people bring Amazon boxes
23:51
Speaker 5: to my office and have my name on. It was
23:53
Speaker 5: actually for Christmas Shop, and it was like body sprays
23:58
Speaker 5: for girls, and it was sweatpants and and hoodies for
24:02
Speaker 5: girls and stuff like that. So yeah, I was kind
24:05
Speaker 5: of hoping it was for me, but.
24:06
Speaker 3: It was not for you. It was not for you.
24:09
Speaker 3: Let's talk about the overall mission, Union mission, so to speak.
24:12
Speaker 3: Every time I have you on, I like to have
24:14
Speaker 3: people explain what it is that you folks do.
24:17
Speaker 5: So we help the hurting people in Jesus name. Basically
24:20
Speaker 5: that's in West Virginia, and that's that's what we've been
24:22
Speaker 5: doing for one hundred and thirteen years now. And the
24:26
Speaker 5: many scopes I mean, from education to recovery, to homelessness
24:31
Speaker 5: to just every every month needs somebody lost a job
24:37
Speaker 5: and they mean that they may need help food wise
24:40
Speaker 5: or or something like that, we step in and help.
24:44
Speaker 3: I got a text here for you that says, there
24:47
Speaker 3: are several homeless in Charleston that we see that have
24:49
Speaker 3: dogs with them. Are these pets allowed in the shelter
24:52
Speaker 3: with their owners during these nights?
24:54
Speaker 5: That is That is a very good question. It's not
24:56
Speaker 5: something that I have addressed within our men's shelter, But
25:01
Speaker 5: I don't think that actually brings up a really good point.
25:03
Speaker 5: I think that that might be a topic for our
25:06
Speaker 5: next conversation in my mens Shelter meeting. That's a good point.
25:10
Speaker 5: There's no reason to leave those dogs out. Well, we'll
25:13
Speaker 5: work on that.
25:13
Speaker 3: All right. That's a very good point. Remind us again
25:17
Speaker 3: where people can get in touch with you, because I
25:18
Speaker 3: know we have a lot of people that listen that
25:20
Speaker 3: are involved in civic organizations, or they're involved in in
25:23
Speaker 3: church groups or whatever the case may be, and they
25:25
Speaker 3: would like to get involved and to kind of help
25:27
Speaker 3: out the various projects you do, not just a Christmas Jason,
25:30
Speaker 3: but year round.
25:31
Speaker 5: Yes, sir, So you can go online on www dot

25:48
Speaker 5: or you can ask for Katie Bush and we can
25:51

25:55

26:13
Speaker 3: you have a good Thanksgiving.
26:14
Speaker 5: Let me just ease your mind. I know you were

26:21

26:22

26:26

Speaker 3: up with a hollow come up to the hollows and
29:54
Speaker 3: deal with the homeless problems there. You know, a lot
29:57
Speaker 3: of times I think when we talk about homeless issues
30:00
Speaker 3: and so on and so forth. That's a very good
30:01
Speaker 3: point from the Texter we only think about the urban areas.
30:04
Speaker 3: I think about the Charlestons and Huntington, Morgantown. But if
30:07
Speaker 3: you go up into a matter of fact, down in
30:10
Speaker 3: my native land down in Logan County. Just talked to
30:14
Speaker 3: some folks down there a couple of days ago that
30:15
Speaker 3: had been working on a large home homeless encampment there
30:19
Speaker 3: in Logan County. So it happens in areas other than
30:22
Speaker 3: just the urban areas. A very good point by the
30:25
Speaker 3: text Texas says Conservatives need to look in the mirror
30:29
Speaker 3: and evaluate their choice for president before they let out
30:32
Speaker 3: all the performative, commercialized outrage over Biden reversing his stance
30:36

31:09

Speaker 3: Good morning, Dave all Right man, good, I mean go
31:44
Speaker 3: ahead and clear up any questions or confusions accountsmen that
31:48
Speaker 3: may arise. I want to go ahead and get this
31:49
Speaker 3: out on the open now. You are not being considered
31:53
Speaker 3: to take over for coach Neil Brown and Morganton absolutely not.
31:56
Speaker 3: All right, did you support the firing or do you
31:58
Speaker 3: want to say, yeah, I like Neil Brown.
32:01
Speaker 13: I think Neil Brown took over the time for Westernia
32:04
Speaker 13: football that needed rebuild the program, and he did a
32:08
Speaker 13: good job. But you know, you got to win on
32:10
Speaker 13: the field.
32:11
Speaker 3: I think uh. And again, I think the reason I'm
32:14
Speaker 3: bringing this up because you may be one of the
32:16
Speaker 3: biggest Mountaineer fans that I know close, I think, well,
32:20
Speaker 3: I know a lot, but I will say I think
32:22
Speaker 3: that what you're saying is not is not wrong. Among
32:26
Speaker 3: a lot of other Mountaineer faithful that are saying that,
32:28
Speaker 3: you know, coach Brown was a don't I've never heard
32:30
Speaker 3: anybody say anything negatively about him off the field, about
32:33
Speaker 3: the way he treated members of the media, the way
32:36
Speaker 3: he treated the staff. I mean, I've talked to people
32:38
Speaker 3: that are very closely associated with the Mountaineer football team.
32:41
Speaker 3: They say, you couldn't ask for a better guy. But unfortunately,
32:45
Speaker 3: it all comes down to wins and losses.
32:47
Speaker 10: That's right.
32:48
Speaker 13: It's it's a w's and l's and you know, thirty
32:50
Speaker 13: seven and thirty five and six years. I mean, that's
32:53
Speaker 13: that's not acceptable. But like you said, I've never heard
32:56
Speaker 13: anybody say a bad word about Neil Brown, and I
32:59
Speaker 13: hope he does well. I think he'll pick up another
33:00
Speaker 13: job real quick.
33:01
Speaker 3: I think so. I think so maybe maybe in a
33:04
Speaker 3: little over his head. Possibly, I don't know. I mean
33:06
Speaker 3: I will see, but there's a big jump from Troy
33:08
Speaker 3: to West Virginia. Well, and with his people skills, I
33:10
Speaker 3: think that Neil Brown would make an excellent possibly athletic
33:14
Speaker 3: director or something like that. Am I saying because he's
33:17
Speaker 3: a young guy. When I'm totally closing the door on
33:19
Speaker 3: his on his coaching altogether, but just saying it. Possibly possibly,
33:23
Speaker 3: I agree with you, and I hope he'll he lands
33:25
Speaker 3: on his feet. I think he's generally, genuinely a very
33:27
Speaker 3: good guy. I do too.
33:28
Speaker 13: And you know, we need some energy back in the
33:31
Speaker 13: program and hopefully the new coach they hire will bring that,
33:34
Speaker 13: and I think rim Baker will do a good job.
33:36
Speaker 3: Any any insight or any anybody that you'd like to
33:39
Speaker 3: see in Morgantown. Anybody I'd like to see Jimbo Jimbo
33:42
Speaker 3: Fisher jimbo A lot of people would agree with that,
33:46
Speaker 3: but I don't know that jimbo Is is going to
33:49
Speaker 3: be there in his I mean, and of course everybody's
33:52
Speaker 3: banging the Rich Rodriguez drums. Well, Hoppy's actually got a
33:55
Speaker 3: poll going on on AX right now about that. Would
33:57
Speaker 3: you support bringing rich Rodriguez back to Morgan chance at
34:00
Speaker 3: all that? And then I promise we'll not talk about sports.
34:02
Speaker 13: I like to see someone new. I don't think Rich
34:05
Speaker 13: rod needs come back.
34:07
Speaker 3: Okay, all right, all right, So last night Charleston City Council,
34:12
Speaker 3: and if I get anything's wrong, you can correct me.
34:14
Speaker 3: A bill was formally introduced and referred to the Rules
34:17
Speaker 3: and Ordinance and Public Safety committees that would prohibit panhandling
34:21
Speaker 3: in the city. Where does all this come from, Council?
34:24
Speaker 13: Well, recently Willing passed a new ordinance dealing with public safety,
34:29
Speaker 13: public safety and pedestrian bill. We've looked at it in
34:33
Speaker 13: the past. You know, when I first got on council,
34:36
Speaker 13: probably five years ago, during COVID, we had a bill
34:39
Speaker 13: to deal with similar issues about ingress egress into the city,
34:44
Speaker 13: about public safety, about corners meetings, things like that. Past
34:48
Speaker 13: two committees unanimous and then we didn't take it up
34:52
Speaker 13: for certain reasons that I agreed with at the time.
34:56
Speaker 3: What were those reasons if well, you know.
34:57
Speaker 13: The threats of lawsuits, did we have the language correct?
35:02
Speaker 13: You know, it was so important in these things council
35:04
Speaker 13: money and and uh, you know, at that point in time,
35:07
Speaker 13: we were meeting by zoom. We weren't in person, so
35:10
Speaker 13: we had two meetings. We didn't have a lot of
35:12
Speaker 13: discussion in the committee. We had, you know, maybe fifty
35:15
Speaker 13: forty five to fifty minutes in each meeting. It's not
35:19
Speaker 13: going to be like that this time. We're going to
35:21
Speaker 13: have lots of discussion on the issue. We're you know,
35:24
Speaker 13: I've already met one time with my Ordnance and Rules
35:27
Speaker 13: Committee looking at a draft bill before it was introduced.
35:31
Speaker 13: Last night, we talked for fifty minutes. There's questions, there's comments, concerns,
35:37
Speaker 13: and we're going to bring people in from certain departments
35:40
Speaker 13: in the city and we're going to look at the
35:42
Speaker 13: issue of areas of concern that the bill addresses for
35:45
Speaker 13: pedestrians and the public safety in the right of ways
35:51
Speaker 13: on and off ramps in the in the city from
35:53
Speaker 13: the interstate, and we're going to look at a broad
35:56
Speaker 13: spectrum of all the issue that goes into all this.
35:59
Speaker 3: And I think that the idea Council. Again we're talking
36:02
Speaker 3: counsel with Chad Robinson. I think that that you're bringing
36:05
Speaker 3: that into the conversation is this is not about the
36:09
Speaker 3: guy coming up to you as you're walking out of
36:11
Speaker 3: your favorite restaurant or whatever, saying, hey, can do you
36:14
Speaker 3: have any change? This is not what this is about.
36:17
Speaker 3: This is about from what I understand, what this starts
36:19
Speaker 3: with is these folks that are standing with science. And
36:23
Speaker 3: this is not just the quote unquote. I mean because
36:25
Speaker 3: I heard one of the council people and I didn't
36:27
Speaker 3: catch the name. I apologize. I don't want to disrespect
36:29
Speaker 3: that council person, but I didn't catch the name that
36:32
Speaker 3: said something to the fact that this was just an
36:34
Speaker 3: attack on the unhoused in Charleston. That's not accurate at all.
36:37
Speaker 13: And this is an issue about hey, coming off the interstate,
36:41
Speaker 13: Let's think about the roadways first. We have individuals in
36:45
Speaker 13: cars stopping in the middle of the flow of traffic
36:49
Speaker 13: and handing out money when there's cars coming off the
36:54
Speaker 13: interstate behind him and causing REX. We have REX all
36:57
Speaker 13: throughout Charleston calls by the issues and let's look at
37:01
Speaker 13: the public safety.
37:02
Speaker 2: Listen.
37:03
Speaker 13: You know we have individuals staying of corners. They have
37:06
Speaker 13: the right to do that. But you know what, we
37:07
Speaker 13: have the right to protect the public about safety, caution
37:12
Speaker 13: and cars and automobiles all across the sea, and that's
37:15
Speaker 13: what we need to do.
37:17
Speaker 3: Are you concerned, counselmen that this could and again, we're
37:20
Speaker 3: just in the infancy of this thing right now. This
37:23
Speaker 3: is not I mean, it's just it's being discussed in committee.
37:25
Speaker 3: It's not going any further at this point. It will,
37:27
Speaker 3: but we don't want to put the cards before the
37:30
Speaker 3: proverbial horse here. But are you concerned that maybe that
37:33
Speaker 3: or have you heard concerns from others that it could
37:35
Speaker 3: go too far that it that this could affect because
37:39
Speaker 3: this is not as you said, and I kind of
37:41
Speaker 3: want to go back to this again. It's not just
37:44
Speaker 3: about the person that we all see on the on
37:46
Speaker 3: ramp holding a sign or off ramp that says hungry,
37:49
Speaker 3: please help. There have been other issues within the city
37:52
Speaker 3: with with with other folks that are collecting money for
37:56
Speaker 3: for kids programs for whatever. This is all going to
37:59
Speaker 3: be compassed into that We don't know what the final
38:03
Speaker 3: writing is gonna look like on the wall, but are
38:05
Speaker 3: you concerned it could go too far? That's right.
38:07
Speaker 13: This is a encompasses anyone campaign signs. Candidates holding signs
38:13
Speaker 13: in the middle of medians.
38:15
Speaker 3: Not easy now, because you know you're apology.
38:18
Speaker 13: I know, but I've done it before too. But but
38:20
Speaker 13: it's in some points that's dangerous. I mean we've seen
38:23
Speaker 13: people back when Vic Sprouse started the process here in
38:26
Speaker 13: Kanall County standing in the meetings a quarter g that's dangerous.
38:30
Speaker 13: I mean at this point in time, with drivers the
38:32
Speaker 13: way they are, I mean, we can't slow people Daan, We're.
38:35
Speaker 3: Trying and distracted driving, so everybody's texting and doing everything
38:38
Speaker 3: else they're doing.
38:38
Speaker 4: Uh.
38:39
Speaker 13: You know, we have individuals and medians with with animals.
38:42
Speaker 13: There's dogs sitting with them. What happens if the dog
38:45
Speaker 13: runs runs across the road chasing a squirrel or a
38:47
Speaker 13: cat and it causes the wreck. That's a problem, and
38:51
Speaker 13: we're gonna look at it. You know what. I'm not
38:53
Speaker 13: here to say, hey, we're going to pass something right away.
38:56
Speaker 13: We're gonna discuss it. I've always taken every issue that
38:59
Speaker 13: comes before my committee and we're gonna discuss it as
39:03
Speaker 13: the as the mayor said yesterday on your show, I'm
39:06
Speaker 13: not pushing it down anyone's throat. We're gonna sit down,
39:09
Speaker 13: we're gonna have meetings, uh counselor and Sean Taylor, and
39:12
Speaker 13: I've already agreed that we're gonna let the discussion happen.
39:15
Speaker 13: We're gonna bring in the officials, we're gonna talk about it,
39:18
Speaker 13: and UH, you know, we'll see what at the end
39:20
Speaker 13: of the day, what draft and what language we come
39:23
Speaker 13: up with, and UH, hopefully we'll get something past so
39:26
Speaker 13: we can help with the with the traffic problems, with
39:28
Speaker 13: the with the accidents, and with the individuals on the
39:31
Speaker 13: streets and corners.
39:32
Speaker 3: And you reference the city of Wheeling that has looked
39:35
Speaker 3: at similar, uh similar proposals. Where are they right now?
39:39
Speaker 13: They've passed in ordinance. The language that we the language
39:43
Speaker 13: we introduced last night is very similar to their language
39:47
Speaker 13: they passed a month or two ago. It's not identical
39:51
Speaker 13: because our code is different than theirs, but UH, it's
39:55
Speaker 13: very similar. It talks about the areas of concern, it
39:58
Speaker 13: talks about the UH in their language that was twenty
40:02
Speaker 13: five miles prior or higher. We've changed hours to thirty.
40:06
Speaker 13: I'd like to look at the ingress and egress language
40:09
Speaker 13: that we've had before, and certain bills that you know, Look,
40:12
Speaker 13: let's look at the coming off the interstate. Let's look
40:15
Speaker 13: at going on in the interstate, you know, things like that.
40:20
Speaker 3: Give us an idea of some of the area's councilmen
40:24
Speaker 3: that we're getting people's heads here. Okay, give us an
40:28
Speaker 3: idea a historical landmark, so to speak, that we would
40:32
Speaker 3: be looking at, for example, if this, if this whole
40:34
Speaker 3: thing passes, I mean, just get in your proverbial car,
40:37
Speaker 3: take a drive, and tell us exactly what areas that
40:39
Speaker 3: we could be looking.
40:41
Speaker 13: Let's look at coming off the interstate on Pennsylvania Okay,
40:45
Speaker 13: going on to Virginia Street. There's individuals standing there right
40:49
Speaker 13: in a meetium with dogs. The cars are coming off
40:52
Speaker 13: the interstate a high rate of speed. You know, it's
40:55
Speaker 13: supposed to be thirty or forty miles prior. Right there,
40:58
Speaker 13: they're coming off there fast. There's there's cars on both
41:01
Speaker 13: sides of that meeting. That's a good example. Right there,
41:04
Speaker 13: Kanall City, beside the Taco bell coming off the interstate,
41:07
Speaker 13: there's individuals standing on the inside part of the cones.
41:11
Speaker 13: You know, we still have construction cones in Kanas City,
41:13
Speaker 13: as you know.
41:13
Speaker 2: You well know.
41:15
Speaker 3: It's it's interesting I have you on the show to
41:17
Speaker 3: talk about something other than construction.
41:19
Speaker 13: But you know we have any individual standing on the
41:21
Speaker 13: inside of the roadway from the cones that are there, uh,
41:25
Speaker 13: inside the lines. That's another example. I mean, that's that's
41:28
Speaker 13: closer to my ward. Those are two good is good
41:31
Speaker 13: locations that we can look at. But you know, we're
41:35
Speaker 13: not talking about neighborhoods. We're not talking about the west
41:39
Speaker 13: side Washington Street areas that might you know, there are
41:43
Speaker 13: issues there. You know, there's a lot of traffic there.
41:46
Speaker 13: But you know, let's look let's first look at the
41:48
Speaker 13: high rated traffic. Uh the speed's coming off off and
41:52
Speaker 13: onto the interstates. We'll start there and see where we go.
41:55
Speaker 3: And let's uh, before we let you go, I've got
41:57
Speaker 3: a couple of things I want to get to you about.
41:59
Speaker 3: Let's talk about where it goes from here. Now, it
42:02
Speaker 3: was brought up last night, referred to I think the
42:05
Speaker 3: rule committee by committee. So what happens next? Because you
42:09
Speaker 3: referenced I had the mayor on the show yesterday and
42:12
Speaker 3: she says to me, this is going to be something
42:14
Speaker 3: we're gonna be talking about a whole lot in the
42:16
Speaker 3: new year. So I don't think this is when when
42:18
Speaker 3: the Council you know, reconvenes. I don't think that you're
42:21
Speaker 3: going to have you know, at your next meeting, Council.
42:24
Speaker 3: But I don't think that you're going to have it. Okay,
42:26
Speaker 3: here's what we're gonna do. It's going to be discussed
42:28
Speaker 3: for quite some time. So what's the timeline at this point?
42:30
Speaker 13: Look like I'm looking at the calling a meeting maybe
42:33
Speaker 13: next week the week after before Christmas, of my Ordnance
42:36
Speaker 13: and Rules Committee, having a first another shot at discussion.
42:41
Speaker 13: In our original meeting, when we were looking at the
42:43
Speaker 13: draft language, there were questions regarding traffic with with police presence.
42:49
Speaker 13: So I'm gonna ask for those officials to be be present.
42:53
Speaker 13: We'll ask questions go from there. I think after the
42:55
Speaker 13: first of the year we might get some final language,
43:00
Speaker 13: maybe some some amendments things like that, but it won't
43:03
Speaker 13: be in the next few days or anything like that.
43:06
Speaker 3: It'll be after the new year, all right, and there's
43:08
Speaker 3: gonna be a whole lot more discussion, just like there
43:10
Speaker 3: was in these other cities like Wheeling and whatever that
43:12
Speaker 3: you mentioned before we let you go. The final meeting
43:14
Speaker 3: of the Capitol Connector project is scheduled for this afternoon,
43:17
Speaker 3: five thirty in the Library downtown. Any thoughts on that
43:20
Speaker 3: from you?
43:20
Speaker 13: The Capital Connector, you know, that's that's gonna be a
43:23
Speaker 13: great project for the See of Charleston. The Minister, the Mayor,
43:26
Speaker 13: and the hern administration went out and got these grants
43:29
Speaker 13: for the twenty five million. You know, I looked at
43:32
Speaker 13: the plans. I think they're going to try to finalize
43:34
Speaker 13: them tonight or or in a very near future.
43:36
Speaker 3: It's gonna be a.
43:37
Speaker 13: Big project coming off greenbrog Street towards the Capitol, all
43:40
Speaker 13: the way down the thirty fifth Street bridge.
43:41
Speaker 3: It's good for Charleston. The mayor said on the show
43:44
Speaker 3: yesterday that we're a riverfront city that doesn't utilize their
43:46
Speaker 3: riverfront nearly as much as they should.
43:48
Speaker 13: You agree with that, I do, and you you look
43:50
Speaker 13: at uh look at Canoell Boulevard. I mean we use
43:52
Speaker 13: one part of it. Basically we can use the entire
43:56
Speaker 13: project to go all the way down to use in
43:59
Speaker 13: front of the Capitol down by the thirty fifth Street bridge.
44:02
Speaker 13: That's an area that is seldom used for the riverfronts.
44:06
Speaker 3: All right, I appreciate you being here, and we'll have
44:09
Speaker 3: you on again, probably the next couple of weeks, maybe
44:11
Speaker 3: even next week once your rules committee meets. We'll be
44:13
Speaker 3: talking about this a whole lot in the new year's
44:15

Speaker 3: about the panhandling issue in the city at Charleston. On
47:35
Speaker 3: the Hunter Biden situation. Text says, none of these sleazy
47:37
Speaker 3: Republicans winding about Hunter Biden's pardon. We'll say one cross
47:41
Speaker 3: word about the promise to pardon January sixth, criminals who
47:44
Speaker 3: disgraced Trump, who he calls political prisoners. Republicans have no integrity,
47:49
Speaker 3: says a texture, A texture that is not texture. Texas
47:53
Speaker 3: says the panhandling issue was brought up during the first
47:56
Speaker 3: Good one term by a formal council member, but was
47:58
Speaker 3: poo pooed then by your guests. I am glad for
48:01
Speaker 3: the about face, says a Texter Texas's Dave. When you
48:05
Speaker 3: have it, Mike Pushkin back on the show, would love
48:07
Speaker 3: to hear his expert opinion on why the voters nationwide
48:09
Speaker 3: chowse overwhelmingly the Conservative Republican Party candidates. Anytime that Mike
48:15
Speaker 3: Postkin once on the air, He's more than welcome to
48:18
Speaker 3: come on. Text, says the University of Southern Mississippi forums
48:22
Speaker 3: are indicating coach Huff will leave Marshall lateral move if
48:25
Speaker 3: he goes, says a Texter. Texter says David Charleston police
48:31
Speaker 3: and Canawh County prosecutors work together more efficiently. At least
48:34
Speaker 3: half of the homeless people in town wouldn't be on
48:36
Speaker 3: the streets. They'd be incarcerated. A large percentage are dangerous
48:40
Speaker 3: with rap sheets full of violent offenses, and many are
48:42
Speaker 3: convicted sexual offenders. Just go and check out the roll
48:45
Speaker 3: sheet at the Rourke Sullivan Men's shelter, says a tex
48:49
Speaker 3: Texas Dave. I agree the coach Brown had to be
48:51
Speaker 3: let go. He's responsible for the performance of the team
48:55
Speaker 3: as a whole, but I also think the individual players
48:58
Speaker 3: must also be held in the same screw as well
49:00
Speaker 3: if they drop passes or lose the ball or miskicks.
49:03
Speaker 3: They're already having their educations paid for, which thousands of
49:06
Speaker 3: students would be very appreciative of. But they want all
49:08
Speaker 3: this nil money, then they must take the negative consequences
49:12
Speaker 3: as well, says a texture Texas dave. Until the city
49:18
Speaker 3: adequately funds public services to help the homeless, mentally ill,
49:21
Speaker 3: and addicted, these folks are going to turn to the
49:23
Speaker 3: free market and take their message to the streets. Current shelters,
49:26
Speaker 3: day centers and healthcare options are failing the poor and homeless,
49:30
Speaker 3: and blaming those groups for trying to help these people
49:32
Speaker 3: is part of the problem. It's a civil case of
49:34
Speaker 3: a nimby. Not in my backyard, says a texture text says,
49:39
Speaker 3: and encouraging people to come downtown and drink beer and
49:42
Speaker 3: wine in public is hypocritical, says a texture tex says
49:47
Speaker 3: he's misusing high rate of speed, which means increasing speed,
49:51
Speaker 3: different from speeding. Dad was a physicist and consultant lawyers
49:56
Speaker 3: in court cases on this term used wrongly in the
49:59
Speaker 3: police reports, says a Texter. You know, and again I
50:03
Speaker 3: heard some of the comments. I did not attend the
50:05
Speaker 3: meeting last night, but I did hear some of the
50:06
Speaker 3: comments and there have been some people in the community
50:09
Speaker 3: of city council folks that are saying that this basically,
50:12
Speaker 3: and I'm very much paraphrasing here, is just a war
50:15
Speaker 3: on the homeless, the unhoused, the poor, whatever you want
50:18
Speaker 3: to call them. But what they're looking at folks in
50:21
Speaker 3: Charleston right now, And again the language is being looked at.
50:24
Speaker 3: This is the third time. I think it's the third time,
50:26
Speaker 3: as the texture pointed out, but this has been brought
50:29
Speaker 3: up and maybe the language wasn't right the other times,
50:31
Speaker 3: but this is not just going to impact the homeless
50:35
Speaker 3: the unhoused. If the person standing at the intersection holding
50:39
Speaker 3: the sign that says please hungry, this what they're looking at.
50:43
Speaker 3: This could have to do with charitable things, you know,
50:46
Speaker 3: people standing in in intersection with a sign that says
50:49
Speaker 3: car wash, you know, girl, scott Cookies for sale, whatever,
50:53
Speaker 3: campaign signs. And I thought that was interesting and council
50:58
Speaker 3: when Robinson brought that up and say politician himself, you
51:01
Speaker 3: know that he's had to run for office and he
51:03
Speaker 3: said in the past he's held up campaign signs. If
51:05
Speaker 3: depending on what the final language in this thing looks
51:08
Speaker 3: like it could very easily impact those things as well.
51:13
Speaker 9: Texts.
51:14
Speaker 3: Let me get a sponsor credit in here, shall we?

51:20
Speaker 3: America's largest injury law firm. I do want to close
51:24
Speaker 3: with this. Aaron Parker has a story posted about this
51:27
Speaker 3: at wv Metronews dot com. Officials in the city of
51:29
Speaker 3: Dunbar have released more details regarding two investigative reports of
51:35
Speaker 3: misconduct by the Dunbar Police Department. The reports were released
51:40
Speaker 3: at a civil service meeting which was held yesterday, according
51:44
Speaker 3: to the story, and again you can read it for
51:45
Speaker 3: yourself at wv metro news dot com. According to the report,
51:48
Speaker 3: Dunbar Mayor Scott Elliott requested the information from the former
51:52
Speaker 3: Dunbar Police Chief, Brian Oxley, but the mayor says he
51:55
Speaker 3: did not get said information. The loss that involved a
52:01
Speaker 3: death in one of the cases was settled for somewhere
52:04
Speaker 3: in the neighborhood. I think of about two million dollars
52:07
Speaker 3: and I want to get into this story a little
52:08
Speaker 3: bit more in the future, but until then, go over
52:11
Speaker 3: to the website check out aaronstorywv metronews dot com. Coming
52:15

Speaker 3: upcoming prom that's been scheduled for February for special need
52:22
Speaker 3: folks in the area. It's part of the Tim Tebow Foundation.
52:24
Speaker 3: We'll talk to one of the organizers about that. Jim
