- 0:08Speaker 1: Football Get into the game. Coming up, we'll be talking
- 0:11Speaker 1: to Nick Evers and the quarterback and the placekicker, Chris Freeman,
- 0:14Speaker 1: Jim Mooora, the head coach with US and coach thirty
- 0:18Speaker 1: two first downs. I don't pay a lot of attention
- 0:21Speaker 1: to stats usually, but when you're putting up thirty two
- 0:25Speaker 1: first downs, that means you're doing some good things on offense.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Running the ball, we know about that over four hundred
- 0:31Speaker 1: on the ground, but you also completed passes when you
- 0:34Speaker 1: needed them and great catch by Shamar Porter for a
- 0:38Speaker 1: touchdown as well.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Yeah, controlling the football, if you look at time of possession,
- 0:44Speaker 2: you know that was critical. And that's just the function
- 0:46Speaker 2: of running the ball in my extension. When you look
- 0:48Speaker 2: at that game, we didn't really hit any big chunk
- 0:50Speaker 2: plays in the run until the second half, and then
- 0:53Speaker 2: we had a bunch of them, and that's just trying
- 0:56Speaker 2: to wear somebody down. But you know, everyone wants to
- 1:00Speaker 2: get everyone loves to play. But when your defense can
- 1:03Speaker 2: be on the sidelines resting, that's very helpful. So they
- 1:06Speaker 2: go out fresh, and our offense gave our defense a
- 1:10Speaker 2: chance to do that this week by the way they
- 1:12Speaker 2: control the ball and got first downs, you know, and
- 1:16Speaker 2: converted fourth downs. I think we were two for two
- 1:18Speaker 2: on fourth down as well. So, you know, being able
- 1:21Speaker 2: to maintain drives, keep your defense fresh, wear an offense out,
- 1:26Speaker 2: I mean, those are those are the things that good
- 1:28Speaker 2: football teams do, and we have to learn how to
- 1:31Speaker 2: do that on a consistent basis.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you con was five for ten on third down conversions,
- 1:36Speaker 1: and I mentioned earlier they held fau to one for eight.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Of this Buffalo team coming up on the weekend, third
- 1:43Speaker 1: down conversions numbers were a little low. I thought they're
- 1:45Speaker 1: under thirty percent. They're fourteen to fifty four. They are
- 1:50Speaker 1: kind of a balanced offensive team. But again, we talk
- 1:54Speaker 1: about third down conversions pretty much every week, But isn't
- 1:57Speaker 1: it really about what you can do on first down
- 2:01Speaker 1: defensively or second down to put somebody in a tough
- 2:04Speaker 1: third and long.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean if you can get to if you
- 2:08Speaker 2: can get a third and manageable on offense, then it's
- 2:13Speaker 2: much easier than being a third and you know, twelve nine,
- 2:16Speaker 2: fifteen whatever. Conversely, on defense, if you know you're facing
- 2:21Speaker 2: third and two, third and three all the time, it's
- 2:23Speaker 2: really hard to come up with a play a defense
- 2:26Speaker 2: to call because they've got you either way, you know,
- 2:28Speaker 2: the offense could decide to run it or throw it.
- 2:32Speaker 2: So those early downs are so important. And that's again,
- 2:36Speaker 2: that's you know, the efficiency in the past game and
- 2:38Speaker 2: the efficiency in the run game on those early downs
- 2:41Speaker 2: sets you up for success on third down. So we
- 2:43Speaker 2: have to we have to just continue to focus on that,
- 2:46Speaker 2: concentrate on it, work on it, and emphasize it every
- 2:51Speaker 2: single day. The importance of early down success to being
- 2:54Speaker 2: able to stay on the field, like you just said,
- 2:56Speaker 2: you know, and have time of possession advantage and run
- 2:59Speaker 2: a lot of plays. But you know, getting thirty two
- 3:01Speaker 2: first downs isn't just because you were good on third down.
- 3:04Speaker 2: It means you were good on first and second down.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Yeah. Hey, Durel Robinson got thirty five carries now almost
- 3:11Speaker 1: three hundred yards eight and a half a carry. He
- 3:13Speaker 1: got three touchdown Mel Brown, those two guys were workhorses.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Gained a buck fifty each on the weekend. And Cam
- 3:20Speaker 1: Edwards has been a horse, a workhorse up until this week,
- 3:23Speaker 1: didn't carry it much this week. But now that's three
- 3:27Speaker 1: guys and we're not even talking about Victor Rosa, he's
- 3:30Speaker 1: been out a couple of games. Tell me about those
- 3:33Speaker 1: three guys now and having depth in that running back room,
- 3:36Speaker 1: how important that is.
- 3:38Speaker 2: It's huge. You know, all four of those guys are
- 3:41Speaker 2: guys we can count on. They're all a little bit different,
- 3:45Speaker 2: but they all understand our scheme. You got Cam who's
- 3:48Speaker 2: just a you know, he's a he's a tough one
- 3:50Speaker 2: to tackle, he's physical, he runs hard, he runs through people.
- 3:53Speaker 2: You got Drel who's a slasher. You got Victor, he's
- 3:56Speaker 2: incredibly versatile. And then you got Mel who's like a joystick,
- 3:59Speaker 2: you know, like boom boom. He's all over the place
- 4:01Speaker 2: and he's got great open field ability making miissibility. And
- 4:06Speaker 2: then we got a quarterback who contributed over seventy yards
- 4:09Speaker 2: rushing as well. So, you know, having five guys that
- 4:13Speaker 2: we feel confident with the ball in their hands in
- 4:15Speaker 2: the run game in some way is I think it's
- 4:19Speaker 2: kind of rare, Mike, you know, to have that many
- 4:21Speaker 2: guys now once again, you know, I want to just
- 4:23Speaker 2: temper everything I say with the you know, you got
- 4:26Speaker 2: to keep doing it. Man. It can't ever just be Hey,
- 4:29Speaker 2: we did it, so we're going to do it again. No,
- 4:31Speaker 2: we did it. We have to work to do it again.
- 4:34Speaker 2: And that's just something that we really have to stay
- 4:38Speaker 2: focused on.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Yeah, that's the sense we got in the locker room
- 4:41Speaker 1: after the game the other night that the players are
- 4:45Speaker 1: enjoying the heck out of winning. Right, you win at home,
- 4:47Speaker 1: you put on a good show. He's goore one hundred
- 4:49Speaker 1: and eleven points and two home games. Haven't won on
- 4:51Speaker 1: the road yet, but winning it makes everybody feel better.
- 4:55Speaker 1: But there's always you got to be smart about it, right.
- 4:58Speaker 1: You got to know, if we play like this, we
- 5:01Speaker 1: got a shot every weekend against anybody. I don't care
- 5:03Speaker 1: who we play. But yeah, if you let your guard
- 5:07Speaker 1: down just a little bit, then something bad can.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Happen, and it can happen real quick, and it spoils
- 5:12Speaker 2: all the good work and all the good will. And
- 5:15Speaker 2: we're not gonna let that happen, you know. I Mean,
- 5:17Speaker 2: we had a good practice Tuesday, better than we've had
- 5:21Speaker 2: the last couple of weeks. And but you know, once again,
- 5:25Speaker 2: Wednesday is another deal. Boy, you got to attack Wednesday
- 5:27Speaker 2: and then you gotta attack Thursday, they get to attack Friday,
- 5:30Speaker 2: then Saturday you gotta go out and you got to perform,
- 5:32Speaker 2: you know, to the to the level that you work
- 5:34Speaker 2: during the week, and just maintaining a very narrow focus
- 5:39Speaker 2: on those things right there. You know, like I said earlier,
- 5:42Speaker 2: you know, do the work, pay attention to details, create
- 5:45Speaker 2: the right mindset. You know, we don't need to get
- 5:47Speaker 2: off topic and start talking about a bunch of other stuff.
- 5:50Speaker 2: We just got to commit to those things. And if
- 5:52Speaker 2: we commit to those things, I mean, really really commit
- 5:55Speaker 2: to them, then then we'll always have a chance as
- 5:58Speaker 2: well anybody. I mean that those are the fundamental of competition.
- 6:02Speaker 2: And you know, I think our guys right now believe that,
- 6:06Speaker 2: and they should believe that, and I think they're seeing
- 6:08Speaker 2: the results of their belief and they have to continue
- 6:11Speaker 2: to work that way.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Yeah, there's Husky seven of eight in the red zone,
- 6:15Speaker 1: ten or fourteen on the season. Nick ever is gonna
- 6:18Speaker 1: be with us in a few moments. Coach quick thought
- 6:20Speaker 1: on him. We're gonna probably do a little more about him.
- 6:23Speaker 1: But he ran the ball a bunch the other day
- 6:26Speaker 1: eighteen times, gained seventy nine yards and I mean his
- 6:31Speaker 1: ball handling. I'm going to talk to him about it.
- 6:34Speaker 1: His ball handling's pretty good. He hides it well, you
- 6:36Speaker 1: don't know what he's doing. That's big.
- 6:39Speaker 2: He's got quick hands and he's a quick decision maker,
- 6:42Speaker 2: and those are two important things when you're doing the
- 6:45Speaker 2: stuff that we're doing with in the run game with him.
- 6:49Speaker 2: And then you know, I think he's a good scrambler.
- 6:51Speaker 2: He can stay alive in the pocket. People have to
- 6:53Speaker 2: pay attention to him. They have to have rush Land
- 6:56Speaker 2: integrity or he's going to make him pay. It gets
- 6:59Speaker 2: a little harder to play man a man when you've
- 7:01Speaker 2: got a quarterback that can scramble. You know, my concern
- 7:05Speaker 2: will always be for his you know, certainly, we wanted
- 7:08Speaker 2: to run and we want to win, and we want
- 7:10Speaker 2: to utilize that. But I want to make sure that
- 7:11Speaker 2: we keep him healthy as well, so encouraging him to
- 7:15Speaker 2: not take hits, to get out of bounce, to get
- 7:17Speaker 2: to the deck. And certainly there's gonna be times where
- 7:20Speaker 2: he's got to drop his shoulder like he did the
- 7:21Speaker 2: other night and Beryl into the end zone. I was
- 7:24Speaker 2: just happy it was his left shoulder, and you know,
- 7:28Speaker 2: but I mean he's he's a freaking competitor. Man. He's
- 7:31Speaker 2: He's only played like ten quarters of college football, you know,
- 7:36Speaker 2: so there's a ton of room for growth there. But
- 7:38Speaker 2: you see it. We knew he had potential. We also
- 7:42Speaker 2: knew he just needed a chance. And the more opportunities
- 7:45Speaker 2: he gets, the better he's going to become.
- 7:47Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, we can't forget. These guys are football players.
- 7:49Speaker 1: The goal line in their sight. Nick Evers dropped his
- 7:52Speaker 1: shoulder and got six for the Huskies. All right, back
- 7:55Speaker 1: with Jim Mora and we'll continue. This is the Yukon
- 7:57Speaker 1: Football Coaches Show on Lear Field.
