- 0:00Speaker 1: Alma Chapter eight. And now it came to pass that
- 0:05Speaker 1: Alma returned from the land of Gideon, after having taught
- 0:08Speaker 1: the people of Gideon many things which cannot be written,
- 0:10Speaker 1: having established the order of the Church, according as he
- 0:13Speaker 1: had before done in the land of Zarahemla Yea, he
- 0:17Speaker 1: returned to his own house at Zarahemla to rest himself
- 0:20Speaker 1: from the labors which he had performed. And thus ended
- 0:24Speaker 1: the ninth year of the reign of the Judges over
- 0:25Speaker 1: the people of Nephi. And it came to pass in
- 0:28Speaker 1: the commencement of the tenth year of the reign of
- 0:30Speaker 1: the Judges over the people of Nephi, that Alma departed
- 0:34Speaker 1: from thence and took his journey over into the land
- 0:36Speaker 1: of Meelk on the west of the River Sidon, on
- 0:39Speaker 1: the west by the borders of the wilderness. And he
- 0:42Speaker 1: began to teach the people in the land of Meelak
- 0:44Speaker 1: according to the holy Order of God by which he
- 0:46Speaker 1: had been called. And he began to teach the people
- 0:49Speaker 1: throughout all the land of Meelak. And it came to
- 0:52Speaker 1: pass that the people came to him throughout all the
- 0:54Speaker 1: borders of the land, which was by the wilderness side,
- 0:58Speaker 1: and they were baptized throughout all so that when he
- 1:01Speaker 1: had finished his work at Meelk, he departed thence and
- 1:05Speaker 1: traveled three days journey on the north of the land
- 1:07Speaker 1: of Meelik, and he came to a city which was
- 1:10Speaker 1: called Ammoniha. Now it was the custom of the people
- 1:13Speaker 1: of Nephi to call their lands, and their cities and
- 1:16Speaker 1: their villages Yea, even all their small villages, after the
- 1:19Speaker 1: name of him who first possessed them. And thus it
- 1:22Speaker 1: was with the land of Ammaniha. And it came to
- 1:25Speaker 1: pass that when Alma had come to the city of Amaniha,
- 1:28Speaker 1: he began to preach the word of God unto them.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Now Satan had gotten great hold upon the hearts of
- 1:35Speaker 1: the people of the city of Amaniha. Therefore they would
- 1:37Speaker 1: not hearken unto the words of Alma. Nevertheless, Alma labored
- 1:42Speaker 1: much in the spirit, wrestling with God in mighty prayer
- 1:45Speaker 1: that he would pour out his spirit upon the people
- 1:48Speaker 1: who were in the city, that he would also grant
- 1:51Speaker 1: that he might baptize them unto repentance. Nevertheless, they hardened
- 1:56Speaker 1: their hearts, saying unto him, behold, we know that thou
- 1:59Speaker 1: art Alma. And we know that thou art high priest
- 2:02Speaker 1: over the church, which thou hast established in many parts
- 2:04Speaker 1: of the land, according to your tradition. And we are
- 2:07Speaker 1: not of thy church, and we do not believe in
- 2:10Speaker 1: such foolish traditions. And now we know that because we
- 2:14Speaker 1: are not of thy church, we know that thou hast
- 2:16Speaker 1: no power over us. And thou hast delivered up the
- 2:20Speaker 1: judgment seat unto Nephiha. Therefore thou art not the chief
- 2:24Speaker 1: judge over us. Now, when the people had said this
- 2:27Speaker 1: and withstood all his words, and reviled him, and spit
- 2:30Speaker 1: upon him, and caused that he should be cast out
- 2:32Speaker 1: of their city, he departed, thence, and took his journey
- 2:36Speaker 1: towards the city which was called Erin. And it came
- 2:39Speaker 1: to pass that while he was journeying, thither, being weighed
- 2:42Speaker 1: down with sorrow, wading through much tribulation and anguish of
- 2:46Speaker 1: soul because of the wickedness of the people who were
- 2:49Speaker 1: in the city of Ammaniha, it came to pass, while
- 2:52Speaker 1: Almah was thus weighed down with sorrow, behold, an angel
- 2:56Speaker 1: of the Lord appeared unto him, saying, blessed art the Almah. Therefore,
- 3:01Speaker 1: lift up thy head and rejoice, for thou hast great
- 3:05Speaker 1: cause to rejoice, for thou hast been faithful in keeping
- 3:08Speaker 1: the commandments of God from the time which thou receivest
- 3:12Speaker 1: thy first message from Him. Behold, I am he that
- 3:16Speaker 1: delivered it unto you. And behold I am sent to
- 3:19Speaker 1: command thee that thou return to the city of Amaniha
- 3:23Speaker 1: and preach again unto the people of the city. Yea,
- 3:26Speaker 1: preach unto them. YEA, say unto them. Except they repent,
- 3:30Speaker 1: the Lord God will destroy them. For behold, they do
- 3:33Speaker 1: study at this time, that they may destroy the liberty
- 3:36Speaker 1: of thy people. For thus saith the Lord, which is
- 3:39Speaker 1: contrary to the statutes and judgments and commandments which He
- 3:42Speaker 1: has given unto his people. Now it came to pass
- 3:46Speaker 1: that after Almah had received his message from the Angel
- 3:49Speaker 1: of the Lord, he returned speedily to the land of Amaniha.
- 3:53Speaker 1: And he entered the city by another way, yea, by
- 3:55Speaker 1: the way which is on the south of the city
- 3:57Speaker 1: of Amaniha. And as he entered the city, he was
- 4:00Speaker 1: in hungered, and he said to a man, will ye
- 4:04Speaker 1: give to an humble servant of God? Something to eat.
- 4:07Speaker 1: And the man said unto him, I am a Nephite,
- 4:11Speaker 1: and I know that thou art a holy prophet of God.
- 4:15Speaker 1: For thou art the man whom an angel said in
- 4:17Speaker 1: a vision, thou shalt receive. Therefore, go with me into
- 4:21Speaker 1: my house, and I will impart in thee of my food.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And I know that thou wilt be a blessing unto
- 4:26Speaker 1: me and my house. And it came to pass that
- 4:30Speaker 1: the man received him into his house. And the man
- 4:32Speaker 1: was called Amulek. And he brought forth bread and meat
- 4:36Speaker 1: and set before Almah. And it came to pass that
- 4:39Speaker 1: Almah ate bread and was filled, and he blessed Amulek
- 4:43Speaker 1: and his house, and he gave thanks unto God. And
- 4:46Speaker 1: after he had eaten and was filled, he said, unto Amulek,
- 4:50Speaker 1: I am Alma, and am the high priest over the
- 4:53Speaker 1: Church of God throughout the land. And behold, I have
- 4:56Speaker 1: been called to preach the word of God among all
- 4:59Speaker 1: this people according to the spirit of revelation and prophecy.
- 5:03Speaker 1: And I was in this land and they would not
- 5:05Speaker 1: receive me, but they cast me out. And I was
- 5:07Speaker 1: about to set my back towards this land forever, but behold,
- 5:12Speaker 1: I have been commanded that I should turn again and
- 5:14Speaker 1: prophes I unto this people yea, and to testify against
- 5:17Speaker 1: them concerning their iniquities. And now, Amulek, because thou hast
- 5:22Speaker 1: fed me and taken me in, thou art blessed, for
- 5:26Speaker 1: I wasn hungered, for I had fasted many days. And
- 5:30Speaker 1: Alma tarried many days with Amulek before he began to
- 5:33Speaker 1: preach unto the people. And it came to pass that
- 5:36Speaker 1: the people did wax more gross in their iniquities. And
- 5:40Speaker 1: the word came to Alma, saying, go and also say
- 5:43Speaker 1: unto my servant, Amulek, go forth and prophes I unto
- 5:47Speaker 1: this people, saying repent. Ye For thus saith the Lord,
- 5:50Speaker 1: except ye repent. I will visit this people in mine
- 5:53Speaker 1: anger yea, and I will not turn my fierce anger away.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And Almah went forth and also Amulek among them people
- 6:00Speaker 1: to declare the words of God unto them. And they
- 6:03Speaker 1: were filled with the Holy Ghost. And they had power
- 6:06Speaker 1: given unto them insomuch that they could not be confined
- 6:09Speaker 1: in dungeons. Neither was it possible that any man could
- 6:13Speaker 1: slay them. Nevertheless, they did not exercise their power until
- 6:17Speaker 1: they were bound in bands and cast into prison. Now
- 6:20Speaker 1: this was done that the Lord might show forth his
- 6:23Speaker 1: power in them. And it came to pass that they
- 6:25Speaker 1: went forth and began to preach and to prophesy unto
- 6:28Speaker 1: the people, according to the spirit and power which the
- 6:30Speaker 1: Lord had given them Alma chapter nine. And again I Alma,
- 6:40Speaker 1: having been commanded of God that I should take Amulek
- 6:43Speaker 1: and go forth and preach again unto this people, or
- 6:46Speaker 1: the people who were in the city of ammaniha. It
- 6:49Speaker 1: came to pass as I began to preach unto them,
- 6:51Speaker 1: they began to contend with me, saying, who art thou
- 6:55Speaker 1: suppose ye, that we shall believe the testimony of one man,
- 6:58Speaker 1: although he should preach on to us that the earth
- 7:00Speaker 1: should pass away. Now they understood not the words which
- 7:04Speaker 1: they spake, for they knew not that the earth should
- 7:06Speaker 1: pass away. And they said, also, we will not believe
- 7:11Speaker 1: thy words if thou shouldst prophesy that this great city
- 7:13Speaker 1: should be destroyed in one day. Now they knew not
- 7:16Speaker 1: that God could do such marvelous works, for they were
- 7:20Speaker 1: a hard hearted and a stiff necked people. And they said,
- 7:24Speaker 1: who is God that sendeth no more authority than one
- 7:27Speaker 1: man among this people to declare unto them the truth
- 7:30Speaker 1: of such great and marvelous things. And they stood forth
- 7:34Speaker 1: to lay their hands on me. But behold, they did not.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And I stood with boldness to declare unto them. Yea,
- 7:41Speaker 1: I did boldly testify unto them, saying, behold, o, ye
- 7:44Speaker 1: wicked and perverse generation, How have you forgotten the tradition
- 7:48Speaker 1: of your fathers? Yea? How soon ye have forgotten the
- 7:52Speaker 1: commandments of God? Do ye not remember that our father
- 7:56Speaker 1: Lehi was brought out of Jerusalem by the hand of God?
- 7:59Speaker 1: Do ye ye not remember that they were all led
- 8:02Speaker 1: by him through the wilderness? And have you forgotten so soon?
- 8:05Speaker 1: How many times he delivered our fathers out of the
- 8:08Speaker 1: hands of their enemies and preserved them from being destroyed
- 8:12Speaker 1: even by the hands of their own brethren. Yea. And
- 8:15Speaker 1: if it had not been for his matchless power and
- 8:18Speaker 1: his mercy, and his long suffering towards us, we should
- 8:22Speaker 1: unavoidably have been cut off from the face of the
- 8:24Speaker 1: earth long before this period of time, and perhaps been
- 8:28Speaker 1: consigned to a state of endless misery and woe. Behold,
- 8:32Speaker 1: now I say unto you that He commandeth you to repent.
- 8:36Speaker 1: And except you repent, ye can in nowise inherit the
- 8:38Speaker 1: Kingdom of God. But behold, this is not all He
- 8:42Speaker 1: has commanded you to repent, or he will utterly destroy
- 8:45Speaker 1: you from off the face of the earth. Yea, he
- 8:47Speaker 1: will visit you in his anger, and in his fierce
- 8:50Speaker 1: anger he will not turn away. Behold, do you not
- 8:54Speaker 1: remember the words which he spake unto Lehi, saying that
- 8:58Speaker 1: inasmuch as ye shall keep my commands, he shall prosper
- 9:01Speaker 1: in the land. And again it is said that inasmuch
- 9:04Speaker 1: as ye will not keep my commandments, he shall be
- 9:06Speaker 1: cut off from the presence of the Lord. Now I
- 9:09Speaker 1: would that ye should remember that inasmuch as the Lamanites
- 9:12Speaker 1: have not kept the commandments of God, they have been
- 9:14Speaker 1: cut off from the presence of the Lord. Now we
- 9:17Speaker 1: see that the word of the Lord has been verified
- 9:19Speaker 1: in this thing, and the Lamanites have been cut off
- 9:22Speaker 1: from His presence from the beginning of their transgressions in
- 9:25Speaker 1: the land. Nevertheless, I say unto you that it shall
- 9:28Speaker 1: be more tolerable for them in the day of judgment
- 9:31Speaker 1: than for you, if ye remain in your sins. Yea,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and even more tolerable for them in this life than
- 9:37Speaker 1: for you, except ye repent. For there are many promises
- 9:40Speaker 1: which are extended to the Lamanites. For it is because
- 9:44Speaker 1: of the traditions of their fathers that caused them to
- 9:46Speaker 1: remain in their state of ignorance. Therefore, the Lord will
- 9:50Speaker 1: be merciful unto them and prolong their existence in the land.
- 9:54Speaker 1: And at some period of time they will be brought
- 9:56Speaker 1: to believe in his word and to know of the
- 9:59Speaker 1: incorrectness the traditions of their fathers, and many of them
- 10:03Speaker 1: will be saved. For the Lord will be merciful unto
- 10:06Speaker 1: all who call on his name. But behold, they say
- 10:09Speaker 1: unto you that if ye persist in your wickedness, that
- 10:12Speaker 1: your days shall not be prolonged in the land. For
- 10:15Speaker 1: the Lamanites shall be sent upon you. And if ye
- 10:18Speaker 1: repent not, they shall come in a time when ye
- 10:21Speaker 1: know not, and ye shall be visited with utter destruction.
- 10:25Speaker 1: And it shall be according to the fierce anger of
- 10:27Speaker 1: the Lord. For he will not suffer you that ye
- 10:30Speaker 1: shall live in your iniquities to destroy his people. I
- 10:34Speaker 1: say unto you, nay, he would rather suffer that the
- 10:36Speaker 1: Lamanites might destroy all his people who are called the
- 10:39Speaker 1: people of Nephi, if it were possible that they could
- 10:41Speaker 1: fall into sins and transgressions, after having had so much
- 10:45Speaker 1: light and so much knowledge given unto them of the
- 10:47Speaker 1: Lord their God, Yea, after having been such a highly
- 10:50Speaker 1: favored people of the Lord Yea, after having been favored
- 10:54Speaker 1: above every other nation, kindred tongue or people, after having
- 10:58Speaker 1: had all things made known unto them according to their
- 11:00Speaker 1: desires and their faith and prayers of that which has been,
- 11:04Speaker 1: and which is, and which is to come, having been
- 11:07Speaker 1: visited by the Spirit of God, having conversed with angels,
- 11:10Speaker 1: and having been spoken unto by the voice of the Lord,
- 11:13Speaker 1: and having the spirit of prophecy and the spirit of revelation,
- 11:16Speaker 1: and also many gifts, the gift of speaking with tongues,
- 11:20Speaker 1: and the gift of preaching, and the gift of the
- 11:22Speaker 1: Holy Ghost, and the gift of translation, Yea. And after
- 11:26Speaker 1: having been delivered of God out of the land of
- 11:29Speaker 1: Jerusalem by the hand of the Lord, having been saved
- 11:32Speaker 1: from famine and from sickness and all manner of diseases
- 11:35Speaker 1: of every kind, and they having waxed strong in battle
- 11:38Speaker 1: that they might not be destroyed, having been brought out
- 11:41Speaker 1: of bondage time after time, and having been kept and
- 11:45Speaker 1: preserved until now, and they have been prospered until they
- 11:49Speaker 1: are rich in all manner of things. And now behold,
- 11:52Speaker 1: I say unto you that if this people, who have
- 11:54Speaker 1: received so many blessings from the hand of the Lord,
- 11:57Speaker 1: should transgress contrary to the light to knowledge which they
- 12:01Speaker 1: do have, I say unto you that if this be
- 12:04Speaker 1: the case, that if they should fall into transgression, it
- 12:08Speaker 1: would be far more tolerable for the Lamanites than for them.
- 12:12Speaker 1: For behold, the promises of the Lord are extended to
- 12:14Speaker 1: the Lamanites, but they are not unto you if ye transgress,
- 12:19Speaker 1: For has not the Lord expressly promised and firmly decreed
- 12:23Speaker 1: that if ye will rebel against him, that ye shall
- 12:25Speaker 1: utterly be destroyed from off the face of the earth.
- 12:29Speaker 1: And now, for this cause that ye may not be destroyed,
- 12:32Speaker 1: the Lord has sent his angel to visit many of
- 12:35Speaker 1: his people, declaring unto them that they must go forth
- 12:38Speaker 1: and cry mightily unto this people, saying repent ye, for
- 12:42Speaker 1: the Kingdom of Heaven is nigh at hand, and not
- 12:46Speaker 1: many days hence the Son of God shall come in
- 12:48Speaker 1: his glory and his glory shall be the glory of
- 12:51Speaker 1: the only Begotten of the Father, full of grace, equity
- 12:55Speaker 1: and truth, full of patience, mercy and long suffering, quick
- 13:00Speaker 1: to hear the cries of his people and to answer
- 13:02Speaker 1: their prayers. And to behold, he cometh to redeem those
- 13:07Speaker 1: who will be baptized unto repentance through faith on His name. Therefore,
- 13:13Speaker 1: prepare ye the way of the Lord, For the time
- 13:16Speaker 1: is at hand that all men shall reap a reward
- 13:18Speaker 1: of their works according to that which they have been.
- 13:22Speaker 1: If they have been righteous, they shall reap the salvation
- 13:25Speaker 1: of their souls according to the power and deliverance of
- 13:27Speaker 1: Jesus Christ. And if they have been evil, they shall
- 13:31Speaker 1: reap the damnation of their souls according to the power
- 13:34Speaker 1: and captivation of the devil. Now behold, this is the
- 13:37Speaker 1: voice of the Angel, crying unto the people. And now,
- 13:41Speaker 1: my beloved brethren. For ye are my brethren, and ye
- 13:45Speaker 1: ought to be beloved, and ye ought to bring forth
- 13:48Speaker 1: works which are meet for repentance. Seeing that your hearts
- 13:51Speaker 1: have been grossly hardened against the word of God, and
- 13:55Speaker 1: seeing that ye are a lost and a fallen people.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Now it came to pass that when I am Almah,
- 14:00Speaker 1: had spoken these words. Behold, the people were wroth with
- 14:02Speaker 1: me because I said unto them that they were a
- 14:05Speaker 1: hard hearted and a stiff necked people. And also because
- 14:09Speaker 1: I said unto them that they were a lost and
- 14:10Speaker 1: a fallen people. They were angry with me, and sought
- 14:13Speaker 1: to lay their hands upon me, that they might cast
- 14:16Speaker 1: me into prison. But it came to pass that the
- 14:18Speaker 1: Lord did not suffer them that they should take me
- 14:21Speaker 1: at that time and cast me into prison. And it
- 14:24Speaker 1: came to pass that Amulek went and stood forth and
- 14:27Speaker 1: began to preach unto them. Also. And now the words
- 14:30Speaker 1: of Amulek are not all written. Nevertheless, a part of
- 14:33Speaker 1: his words are written in this book Alma chapter ten.
- 14:43Speaker 1: Now these are the words which Amulek preached unto the
- 14:45Speaker 1: people who were in the land of Ammaniha, saying, I
- 14:49Speaker 1: am Amulek. I am the son of Godona, who was
- 14:52Speaker 1: the son of Ishmael, who was a descendant of Amendai.
- 14:56Speaker 1: And it was the same Amindai who interpreted the writing
- 14:59Speaker 1: which was upon in the wall of the temple, which
- 15:01Speaker 1: was written by the finger of God. And a minute
- 15:04Speaker 1: I was a descendant of Nephi, who was the son
- 15:06Speaker 1: of Lehi, who came out of the land of Jerusalem,
- 15:09Speaker 1: who was a descendant of Manassa, who was the son
- 15:12Speaker 1: of Joseph, who was sold into Egypt by the hands
- 15:15Speaker 1: of his brethren. And behold, I am also a man
- 15:18Speaker 1: of no small reputation among all those who know me, yea,
- 15:21Speaker 1: and behold, I have many kindreds and friends, and I
- 15:24Speaker 1: have also acquired much riches by the hand of my industry. Nevertheless,
- 15:28Speaker 1: after all this, I never have known much of the
- 15:31Speaker 1: ways of the Lord and his mysteries and marvelous power.
- 15:34Speaker 1: I said, I never had known much of these things.
- 15:37Speaker 1: But behold, I mistake, for I have seen much of
- 15:40Speaker 1: his mysteries and his marvelous power, Yea, even in the
- 15:43Speaker 1: preservation of the lives of this people. Nevertheless, I did
- 15:47Speaker 1: heart in my heart, for I was called many times,
- 15:50Speaker 1: and I would not here. Therefore I knew concerning these things,
- 15:54Speaker 1: yet I would not know. Therefore I went on rebelling
- 15:58Speaker 1: against God and the wickedness of my heart, even until
- 16:02Speaker 1: the fourth day of this seventh month, which is in
- 16:05Speaker 1: the tenth year of the reign of the Judges. As
- 16:08Speaker 1: I was journeying to see a very near kindred Behold,
- 16:11Speaker 1: an angel of the Lord appeared unto me and said, Amulech,
- 16:15Speaker 1: return to thine own house, for thou shalt feed a
- 16:18Speaker 1: prophet of the Lord. He a a holy man who
- 16:21Speaker 1: was a chosen man of God. For he has fasted
- 16:24Speaker 1: many days because of the sins of this people, and
- 16:27Speaker 1: he is in hungered. And thou shalt receive him into
- 16:30Speaker 1: thy house and feed him, and he shall bless thee
- 16:33Speaker 1: and thy house, and the blessing of the Lord shall
- 16:36Speaker 1: rest upon thee and thy house. And it came to
- 16:39Speaker 1: pass that I obeyed the voice of the angel and
- 16:42Speaker 1: returned towards my house. And as I was going thither,
- 16:46Speaker 1: I found the man whom the Angel said unto me,
- 16:48Speaker 1: thou shalt receive into thy house. And behold, it was
- 16:51Speaker 1: this same man who has been speaking unto you concerning
- 16:54Speaker 1: the things of God. And the Angel said unto me,
- 16:58Speaker 1: he is a holy man. Wherefore I know he is
- 17:01Speaker 1: a holy man, because it was said by an angel
- 17:04Speaker 1: of God. And again I know that the things whereof
- 17:07Speaker 1: he hath testified are true. For behold, I say unto
- 17:10Speaker 1: you that as the Lord liveth, even so has he
- 17:12Speaker 1: sent his Angel to make these things manifest unto me.
- 17:16Speaker 1: And this he has done. While this Alma hath dwelt
- 17:19Speaker 1: at my house. For behold, he hath blest mine house.
- 17:23Speaker 1: He hath blessed me and my women, and my children,
- 17:27Speaker 1: and my father and my kinsfolk. Yea, even all my
- 17:30Speaker 1: kindred hath ye blest. And the blessing of the Lord
- 17:33Speaker 1: hath rested upon us, according to the words which he spake.
- 17:37Speaker 1: And now when Amulik had spoken these words, the people
- 17:40Speaker 1: began to be astonished, seeing there was more than one
- 17:43Speaker 1: witness who testified of the things whereof they were accused,
- 17:46Speaker 1: and also of the things which were to come, according
- 17:49Speaker 1: to the spirit of prophecy which was in them. Nevertheless,
- 17:52Speaker 1: there were some among them who thought to question them,
- 17:56Speaker 1: that by their cunning devices, they might catch them in
- 17:59Speaker 1: their words, that they might find witness against them, that
- 18:04Speaker 1: they might deliver them to their judges, that they might
- 18:07Speaker 1: be judged according to the law, and that they might
- 18:09Speaker 1: be slain or cast into prison according to the crime
- 18:13Speaker 1: which they could make appear or witness against them. Now
- 18:17Speaker 1: it was those men who sought to destroy them, who
- 18:20Speaker 1: were lawyers, who were hired or appointed by the people
- 18:23Speaker 1: to administer the law at their times of trials, or
- 18:26Speaker 1: at the trials of the crimes of the people before
- 18:28Speaker 1: the judges. Now, these lawyers were learned in all the
- 18:32Speaker 1: arts and cunning of the people, and this was to
- 18:35Speaker 1: enable them that they might be skillful in their profession.
- 18:39Speaker 1: And it came to pass that they began to question Amulek,
- 18:42Speaker 1: that thereby they might make him cross his words or
- 18:45Speaker 1: contradict the words which he should speak. Now they knew
- 18:48Speaker 1: not that Amulek could know of their designs. But it
- 18:52Speaker 1: came to pass as they began to question him, he
- 18:55Speaker 1: perceived their thoughts, and he said unto them, O, ye
- 18:58Speaker 1: wicked and perverse generation, ye lawyers and hypocrites. For ye
- 19:03Speaker 1: are laying the foundation of the devil. For ye are
- 19:05Speaker 1: laying traps and snares to catch the holy ones of God.
- 19:09Speaker 1: Ye are laying plans to pervert the ways of the righteous,
- 19:12Speaker 1: and to bring down the wrath of God upon your heads,
- 19:15Speaker 1: even to the utter destruction of this people. Yea well,
- 19:18Speaker 1: did Mosiah say, who was our last king? When he
- 19:21Speaker 1: was about to deliver up the kingdom, having no one
- 19:23Speaker 1: to confer it upon, causing that this people should be
- 19:26Speaker 1: governed by their own voices. Yea. Well, did he say
- 19:30Speaker 1: that if the time should come that the voice of
- 19:32Speaker 1: this people should choose iniquity, that is, if the time
- 19:35Speaker 1: should come that this people should fall into transgression, they
- 19:39Speaker 1: would be ripe for destruction. And now I say unto
- 19:43Speaker 1: you that, well doth the Lord judge of your iniquities.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Well doth he cry unto this people, by the voice
- 19:49Speaker 1: of his angels, repent, ye, repent, for the Kingdom of
- 19:53Speaker 1: Heaven is at hand. Yea. Well, doth he cry by
- 19:56Speaker 1: the voice of his angels, that I will come down
- 19:59Speaker 1: among my people with equity and justice in my hands. Yea.
- 20:03Speaker 1: And I say unto you that if it were not
- 20:05Speaker 1: for the prayers of the righteous who are now in
- 20:07Speaker 1: the land, that ye would even now be visited with
- 20:10Speaker 1: utter destruction. Yet it would not be by flood, as
- 20:13Speaker 1: were the people in the days of Noah, but it
- 20:15Speaker 1: would be by famine, and by pestilence and the sword.
- 20:20Speaker 1: But it is by the prayers of the Righteous that
- 20:22Speaker 1: ye are spared. Now. Therefore, if ye will cast out
- 20:26Speaker 1: the righteous from among you, then will not the Lord
- 20:29Speaker 1: stay his hand, But in his fierce anger he will
- 20:31Speaker 1: come out against you. Then ye shall be smitten by
- 20:34Speaker 1: famine and by pestilence and by the sword, And the
- 20:38Speaker 1: time is soon at hand except ye repent. And now
- 20:42Speaker 1: it came to pass that the people were more angry
- 20:44Speaker 1: with Amulik, and they cried out, saying, this man doth
- 20:47Speaker 1: revile against our laws, which are just, and our wise lawyers,
- 20:51Speaker 1: whom we have selected. But Amulik stretched forth his hand
- 20:55Speaker 1: and cried the mightier unto them, saying, O, ye wicked
- 20:58Speaker 1: and perverse generation, Why hath Satan got such great hold
- 21:02Speaker 1: upon your hearts? Why will ye yield yourselves unto him?
- 21:05Speaker 1: That he may have power over you to blind your eyes,
- 21:08Speaker 1: that ye will not understand the words which are spoken
- 21:11Speaker 1: according to their truth. For behold, have I testified against
- 21:15Speaker 1: your law? Ye do not understand. Ye say that I
- 21:18Speaker 1: have spoken against your law. But I have not. I
- 21:21Speaker 1: have spoken in favor of your law, to your condemnation.
- 21:25Speaker 1: And now behold I say unto you that the foundation
- 21:28Speaker 1: of the destruction of this people is beginning to be
- 21:30Speaker 1: laid by the unrighteousness of your lawyers and your judges.
- 21:34Speaker 1: And now it came to pass that when Amulah had
- 21:36Speaker 1: spoken these words, the people cried out against him, saying,
- 21:40Speaker 1: now we know that this man is a child of
- 21:42Speaker 1: the devil, for he hath lied unto us, for he
- 21:44Speaker 1: hath spoken against our law. And now he says that
- 21:47Speaker 1: he has not spoken against it. And again he has
- 21:50Speaker 1: reviled against our lawyers and our judges. And it came
- 21:53Speaker 1: to pass that the lawyers put it into their hearts
- 21:56Speaker 1: that they should remember these things against him. And there
- 22:00Speaker 1: was one among them whose name was Zizram. Now he
- 22:03Speaker 1: was the foremost to accuse Amulek and Elma, he being
- 22:07Speaker 1: one of the most expert among them, having much business
- 22:10Speaker 1: to do among the people. Now, the object of these
- 22:13Speaker 1: lawyers was to get gain, and they got gain according
- 22:16Speaker 1: to their employ and of Alma chapters eight through ten.
