- 0:57Speaker 2: we will wrap everything up with a little segment we

- 1:05Speaker 2: find gentlemen doing today?
- 1:06Speaker 1: Doing great, very good, very excited to get to our

- 1:13Speaker 2: three wonderful segments before that.
- 1:16Speaker 3: I'm excited for the Meat Eater Movie Club because I
- 1:18Speaker 3: know obviously a banger of a film, and I know
- 1:21Speaker 3: you have some wonderful notes.
- 1:22Speaker 1: It's a it's a it's a fan favorite. I think
- 1:25Speaker 1: a fan favorite. How did this recommendation come down?
- 1:27Speaker 2: Oh no, I'm sorry, I'm talking about Meat Eater Movie
- 1:29Speaker 2: Club got Phil got film you always do good? No,
- 1:35Speaker 2: I actually the film was recommended by a couple. Uh.
- 1:39Speaker 2: It was in a couple of emails to us, and
- 1:41Speaker 2: I remember watching it when I was little, and the
- 1:43Speaker 2: only thing I could remember is the you know, the
- 1:45Speaker 2: climatic scene in the bear cave. So we'll get to
- 1:48Speaker 2: all that. We'll get to all that.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Can I can I make requests for Movie Club? Would
- 1:52Speaker 1: you rank all of the movies we've done? Not right now,
- 1:55Speaker 1: but like in some future episode, maybe.
- 1:58Speaker 2: At the end of the year. I think that's a
- 1:59Speaker 2: tremendous I.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Do a recap. Here's the best and here's the worst. Oh,
- 2:03Speaker 1: maybe you've got some awards, like best Cinematography goes to
- 2:07Speaker 1: Ye Wild America.
- 2:08Speaker 2: We can call it the not the Rats. That's great.
- 2:13Speaker 2: We can just have a whole episode where I just
- 2:15Speaker 2: reread all of the all of the bits that I've done.
- 2:19Speaker 1: We need some shows over Christmas break.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Yeah, that'll be some good filler. Now, before we get
- 2:24Speaker 2: too far, we have a couple of exciting new things
- 2:28Speaker 2: to announce here today. Actually, Rich Frohning's In Pursuit podcast
- 2:33Speaker 2: just took over what used to be the Cutting the
- 2:35Speaker 2: Distance podcast, So you can join Rich every Thursday on
- 2:38Speaker 2: the meat Eater podcast YouTube channel or wherever you listen
- 2:41Speaker 2: to your podcasts. And at this very moment, eleven am
- 2:46Speaker 2: Mountain Time, the med Eater YouTube channel has launched a
- 2:49Speaker 2: video recap of the Mountain mentor that Steve and I
- 2:52Speaker 2: did earlier this year. We went around to a couple
- 2:55Speaker 2: of different universities in the West and talked about our
- 2:57Speaker 2: mediator's American History mountain Men audio book, and Steve and
- 3:01Speaker 2: I also got to visit a museum museum the Mountain
- 3:05Speaker 2: Men in Pinedale, Wyoming, and we got to shoot some
- 3:07Speaker 2: black powder guns.
- 3:09Speaker 1: And the video shows that shows you boys, it.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Does it does? It actually shows my first, my very
- 3:16Speaker 2: first attempt at shooting a flintlock rifle.
- 3:21Speaker 1: You say attempt it was It went poorly.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Oh okay, there was a I was prepared for the
- 3:27Speaker 2: delay between the flash and the pan and the hangers.
- 3:31Speaker 2: It wasn't. It wasn't a full on hang fire. But
- 3:33Speaker 2: by the time the rifle discharged, I was pointing it
- 3:36Speaker 2: elsewhere I was pointing it at the ground. My flint
- 3:40Speaker 2: had already hit me. So it's embarrassing and I had
- 3:42Speaker 2: hoped they cut that from the film, but that is included.
- 3:46Speaker 2: And certainly Steve had some choice words to say to you. Yes, yes,
- 3:51Speaker 2: he was tickled. He was tickled by my failure to
- 3:54Speaker 2: hit the target.
- 3:56Speaker 1: See that now on the media YouTube channel.
- 3:58Speaker 4: Indeed, also we have a note from Mark in the chat.
- 4:01Speaker 4: He would like everyone to know that there are brand
- 4:03Speaker 4: new wire to Hunt hats and t shirts in the store.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Shameless plug from Mark.
- 4:07Speaker 4: I don't know if they're in the store at this
- 4:09Speaker 4: moment or if they're coming. Mark, let us know. You know,
- 4:11Speaker 4: it's Yannie's favorite hat.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Yanni wears that hat every day I see him at
- 4:15Speaker 1: the office.
- 4:17Speaker 2: You see him at the office every day.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Every day that I see you. It's important it's his
- 4:24Speaker 1: favorite hat from our selection.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Excellent.
- 4:28Speaker 3: I could butt in here and say the hats and
- 4:30Speaker 3: shirts are available, so sty geez.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Another another shameless plug. Let's get away from the commercial
- 4:37Speaker 2: nastiness of this whole enterprise and get into the good
- 4:40Speaker 2: stuff here. Speaking of historical firearms, to connect the thing
- 4:44Speaker 2: I had just said a few minutes before, we got
- 4:46Speaker 2: into the T shirt selling to the upcoming segment. For
- 4:50Speaker 2: our first and only guest on today's show, we're talking
- 4:52Speaker 2: to Kevin Hogan, the president of Rock Island Auction Kevin,
- 4:57Speaker 2: Welcome to the show.
- 5:00Speaker 5: So, boys, we got hats and T shirts too?
- 5:02Speaker 2: Oh real?
- 5:02Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 5:03Speaker 5: Would you?
- 5:03Speaker 2: Yeah? Where can we find those Rock Island Auction dot Com.
- 5:07Speaker 5: No, you actually got to come here and buy them.
- 5:08Speaker 5: We're not we're not that advanced yet, but I'm proud
- 5:11Speaker 5: of them too.
- 5:12Speaker 2: So could you tell us where you are? And I
- 5:15Speaker 2: know you've got a couple of guns to show us,
- 5:16Speaker 2: but you could tell us a little bit about where
- 5:18Speaker 2: you are and uh, the auction that these guns will
- 5:20Speaker 2: be in.
- 5:21Speaker 5: Yes, sir, So we're in Bedford, Texas. I'm Kevin Hogan,
- 5:23Speaker 5: president of Rock Island Auction Company. We're located in Bedford, Texas.
- 5:27Speaker 5: We've been in business for thirty years. We were kind
- 5:31Speaker 5: of on the well we were we were in Illinois
- 5:33Speaker 5: for up till twenty twenty three and then we moved
- 5:35Speaker 5: down here to the Lone Star State and it's it's
- 5:38Speaker 5: been great. So we're right in the middle of the BFW.
- 5:40Speaker 5: We're thirty minutes from Fort Worth, thirty minutes from Dallas,
- 5:44Speaker 5: ten minutes from DFW airport. We got down here as
- 5:47Speaker 5: soon as we could, so it's been it's been absolutely wonderful.
- 5:50Speaker 5: We handle the finest guns in the world. We do
- 5:52Speaker 5: it three times a year, and we got a great
- 5:54Speaker 5: sale this weekend, so we'll be selling Friday through Sunday.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Excellent.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Kevin, Being in Texas seems like what I would imagine
- 6:02Speaker 1: to be like the core of the demographic of your buyers.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Is that case? Is that the case? Is it vary Texas?
- 6:10Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean at the end of the day, I
- 6:12Speaker 5: mean like country is country wide, right, and I mean
- 6:15Speaker 5: we have thirty four countries that will participate in our sales.
- 6:19Speaker 5: But you know, Texas has it's not the best gun
- 6:21Speaker 5: culture United States, it's the best gun culture in the world.
- 6:24Speaker 5: And you know, you draw that line from Dallas to
- 6:27Speaker 5: San Antonio, San Antonio to Houston, you've got the Golden Triangle.
- 6:30Speaker 5: I mean, there's nine million people here in BFW, and
- 6:34Speaker 5: you know, more and more, there's there's more, there's more
- 6:36Speaker 5: business down on the deer blind here, and there is
- 6:38Speaker 5: on the golf course. And it's been it's been a
- 6:41Speaker 5: great place for us to be. But if you break
- 6:42Speaker 5: it down, you know, by population densities. I mean we're
- 6:45Speaker 5: we're from the formerly great state of Illinois, and I
- 6:49Speaker 5: mean Illinois is a great state. But you just have,
- 6:51Speaker 5: you know, thirty miles surrounded by reality, which is Chicago.
- 6:56Speaker 5: But it's population densities that buy gun. So Texas number one,
- 6:59Speaker 5: but California's number two, Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois, all right up
- 7:04Speaker 5: there as population densities.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Interesting, Can you can you tell us about the first
- 7:09Speaker 2: firearm you have to show us here?
- 7:12Speaker 5: Sure, man, we got some we got some fun stuff,
- 7:16Speaker 5: so everything. I'm gonnahow you. We're gonna start selling tomorrow.
- 7:20Speaker 5: This is this is lot number forty four, will sell
- 7:23Speaker 5: it within the first thirty minutes tomorrow morning. We start
- 7:26Speaker 5: selling at nine am Central time. This is Steve McQueen's
- 7:30Speaker 5: Mayor's lay. I don't know how much introduction it does
- 7:34Speaker 5: or doesn't need to the viewers. For me, I'm thirty
- 7:36Speaker 5: seven years old. You know, what does what does Steve
- 7:41Speaker 5: McQueen mean generationally to my generation? What does it mean
- 7:44Speaker 5: to that baby boomer generation? But this gun for so
- 7:48Speaker 5: many we've had it on display for three weeks. I
- 7:50Speaker 5: mean we've had people come from around the country to
- 7:52Speaker 5: kind of pay homage to it, the imagination that it
- 7:55Speaker 5: inspired them right when they were they were a youth
- 7:59Speaker 5: to kind of how they've whatever formulated their lives. It's
- 8:01Speaker 5: it was, it's meaningful to a lot of people. Steve
- 8:04Speaker 5: McQueen the King of Cool. This was this was the
- 8:07Speaker 5: Mayor's leg from from his show UH Wanted Dead or
- 8:10Speaker 5: Alive And it's a We've sold some really cool like
- 8:13Speaker 5: pop culture items. I'm looking forward to this one. Most notably,
- 8:18Speaker 5: we had Hans Solo's original blaster from the original Star
- 8:23Speaker 5: Wars movie a new We actually made the Guiness Book
- 8:26Speaker 5: of World Records with with that gun. That gun brought
- 8:29Speaker 5: just over a million dollars. We had John Wayne's single
- 8:32Speaker 5: action his favorite kind of screen used gun that he
- 8:35Speaker 5: used in Rio, Bravo, True Grit, Rooster Cockburn. But Steve
- 8:40Speaker 5: McQueen strikes a different chord with people, obviously again that
- 8:42Speaker 5: the King of Cool, and I think you know, this
- 8:45Speaker 5: gun kind of embodies that. It's because at the end
- 8:48Speaker 5: of the day, it is it is cool.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Can you can you I've always been curious, can you
- 8:52Speaker 2: tell us about the origin of the term Mayor's leg.
- 8:56Speaker 2: I mean it typically refers to uh lever action that's
- 9:00Speaker 2: been shortened and then the stock has been cut off
- 9:03Speaker 2: just below the the sort of wrist of the stock.
- 9:05Speaker 2: But do you know about the history of that term?
- 9:08Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, like I think just from the from
- 9:11Speaker 5: the visual you could say it's there, but what we
- 9:14Speaker 5: were reading is I can't. He did a I think
- 9:17Speaker 5: it's in his autobiography. He's talking about the development of
- 9:20Speaker 5: this gun with Kenneth von Dutch, which is just another
- 9:23Speaker 5: cool piece of American pop culture, the famous fabricator and
- 9:27Speaker 5: McQueen was a method actor and so he took he
- 9:31Speaker 5: took they made three of these. He took one of
- 9:33Speaker 5: the original examples that didn't have the plug barrel because
- 9:36Speaker 5: this is a blank firing gun. Only he took it
- 9:38Speaker 5: to the range and I think the one that he
- 9:40Speaker 5: said he was shooting was like a forty five to
- 9:42Speaker 5: seventy and kicked like Mayer's leg was was basically from
- 9:47Speaker 5: the visual. Yeah, they said even this gun on the
- 9:49Speaker 5: blank load, it was it was so short and so
- 9:52Speaker 5: powerful they had to like shorten the blank load. Okay,
- 9:54Speaker 5: that they were doing to be like a third of
- 9:56Speaker 5: the power.
- 9:56Speaker 2: That's great. That had never occurred to me, but certainly
- 9:59Speaker 2: the EXPERI it would probably bring to mind getting kicked. Absolutely,
- 10:03Speaker 2: what have you got for your second gun here today?
- 10:07Speaker 5: So also we're selling this soccer tomorrow Smith and Wesson
- 10:13Speaker 5: new model number three that letters to Annie Oakley. So
- 10:18Speaker 5: if you take a look, like just a few things
- 10:20Speaker 5: are you can see this like shotgun sight on the
- 10:24Speaker 5: front and it's it's a smooth bore. So the gun
- 10:26Speaker 5: was made in eighteen ninety five and it was it
- 10:29Speaker 5: was shipped directly to Annie Oakley. And so like we
- 10:32Speaker 5: get a lot of like historical guns that get run
- 10:35Speaker 5: past us, and provenance is everything, and like my my
- 10:40Speaker 5: story is not like great, but it's it's almost every
- 10:43Speaker 5: time we get a historic gun. I mean for every
- 10:45Speaker 5: historic gun we sell, there's there's fifty or seventy five
- 10:47Speaker 5: that we don't because they don't don't quite meet Mustard.
- 10:50Speaker 5: But like you know the great cinema classic Half Baked,
- 10:55Speaker 5: and he's talking about how he bought Jerry Guardia in
- 10:57Speaker 5: a pout and you know that or who told you
- 11:00Speaker 5: that is the guy that sold it to me. And
- 11:02Speaker 5: so you know so many stories about about guns, but
- 11:07Speaker 5: probe noance is everything Unfortunately, some of this stuff's real
- 11:10Speaker 5: and it's lost of time, space and history. But this
- 11:12Speaker 5: one letters right from the factory to Annie Oakley as
- 11:16Speaker 5: a smooth bore, and she's she's as relevant now as
- 11:21Speaker 5: as she was, you know in eighteen ninety five when
- 11:24Speaker 5: the gun was made. She would if you think about it,
- 11:26Speaker 5: she was really like one of the first real international
- 11:29Speaker 5: female superstars. She was her shooting prowess and she I
- 11:33Speaker 5: mean she was. She was tough as nailes too. She
- 11:37Speaker 5: tried to raise a regiment of all female sharp shooters
- 11:40Speaker 5: both in the Spanish American War and in World War One.
- 11:43Speaker 5: She was tough. I mean she started fishing, hunting and
- 11:46Speaker 5: trapping when she was seven years old, and and did
- 11:49Speaker 5: it for for the right reasons. They're putting food on
- 11:51Speaker 5: the table.
- 11:51Speaker 4: She was.
- 11:52Speaker 5: She was tough, and so it's pretty I mean, you
- 11:55Speaker 5: think about what this gun saw. This is eighteen ninety five,
- 11:58Speaker 5: she's thirty five years old. She's five foot on paper,
- 12:03Speaker 5: one hundred pounds, soaking wet and sitting sitting bul Is
- 12:05Speaker 5: watching watching her. Yeah, shoot, shoot this gun, you know,
- 12:10Speaker 5: and he's the one that tagged your little masure shot.
- 12:14Speaker 2: That's incredible history. That's incredible. Could you tell us what
- 12:19Speaker 2: you expect the uh that that pistol to make it auction?
- 12:23Speaker 2: And also I forgot to ask you about the Mayor's
- 12:25Speaker 2: leg too. Do you have an expected valuation of those?
- 12:29Speaker 5: Yeah, the Mayor's leg I think we got in and
- 12:31Speaker 5: around like fifty to seventy five thousand as a low estimate.
- 12:34Speaker 5: It's really hard to comp some of this short, right,
- 12:36Speaker 5: so you have an intrinsic value exercise versus history. But
- 12:39Speaker 5: we've our estimate on the mayor's legs fifty to seventy five.
- 12:42Speaker 5: Anti Oakley I believe is sixty to ninety thousand. We
- 12:46Speaker 5: have sold several Antioakley guns. I mean that was her craft,
- 12:49Speaker 5: is she Guns were her tools. She had a lot
- 12:51Speaker 5: of guns. Most of those have been lost of time,
- 12:53Speaker 5: space and history, but they were actually hers. But we've
- 12:56Speaker 5: sold them. We've sold Antiokley guns for for for a
- 12:59Speaker 5: huge dollars. We've ever sold a revolver. I mean typically
- 13:01Speaker 5: you think of Auntie Ogle, you think of like a
- 13:03Speaker 5: twenty two eighteen ninety Winchester or a shotgun. But yeah,
- 13:09Speaker 5: I mean I expect it to be spirited. I expect
- 13:12Speaker 5: it to be spirited, but I don't have a crystal ball.
- 13:14Speaker 5: I'll tell you. I'll tell you tomorrow night when it's
- 13:15Speaker 5: all said and done.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Excellent, excellent, And what to wrap things up here, what's
- 13:20Speaker 2: the third and final item you got?
- 13:22Speaker 5: Yeah, this is I mean when we say we handle
- 13:26Speaker 5: the finest guns in the world, that's what you're looking
- 13:29Speaker 5: at here. This is the I mean, this is the
- 13:31Speaker 5: best Marlin that we've ever had. We've been in business
- 13:33Speaker 5: for thirty years to handle the best guns in the world,
- 13:35Speaker 5: but this is as good as a guess what we
- 13:37Speaker 5: do fine. In Historic Fyrum's collecting, we trademarked the phrase
- 13:42Speaker 5: not all the hardest framed I mean this is. This
- 13:44Speaker 5: is for that very reason. It's a Conrad Frederick Factory
- 13:49Speaker 5: and Grave Golden Platinum Midleay. It's a Marlin model of
- 13:52Speaker 5: eighteen ninety three, manufactured in eighteen ninety six, and apart
- 13:57Speaker 5: from it being you know, jaw droppingly beautiful and extremely
- 14:01Speaker 5: rare and likewise extremely expensive, kind of a neat story,
- 14:05Speaker 5: was maintained by the same family in Connecticut for well
- 14:09Speaker 5: over one hundred years. It's been passed now as a
- 14:11Speaker 5: family heirloom. You know, it's like the old thing. He
- 14:14Speaker 5: would take it. The owner would take it to the
- 14:16Speaker 5: gun shop once every two or three years to have
- 14:19Speaker 5: him oilers. He didn't feel doing it. And you know,
- 14:23Speaker 5: naturally people start showing up at the gun shop and
- 14:25Speaker 5: offers start getting made. And I think it went from
- 14:28Speaker 5: five thousand dollars, eight thousand dollars to twelve thousand dollars
- 14:31Speaker 5: to fifteen thousand dollars and h when we talk to
- 14:34Speaker 5: these folks that do you think you think it could
- 14:36Speaker 5: bring thirty grand? And I think that gun's going to
- 14:38Speaker 5: set a world record for wow eighteen. I think it's
- 14:41Speaker 5: gonna I think it's gonna blow past one hundred and
- 14:43Speaker 5: fifty thousand dollars pretty quick.
- 14:46Speaker 1: You had talked about the Antioakley gun and if it
- 14:49Speaker 1: would pass the Mustard. What is the authentication process like
- 14:53Speaker 1: when you get a gun that was supposedly owned by
- 14:55Speaker 1: a famous person like that.
- 14:57Speaker 5: So this one, this one made it easy. You can
- 15:00Speaker 5: contact like Smith and Wesson. They have their factory archive
- 15:03Speaker 5: in their factory factory ledgers. Now what they were doing
- 15:08Speaker 5: back then, if someone was having a bad day, what
- 15:10Speaker 5: was being recorded, what wasn't being recorded? There wasn't a
- 15:12Speaker 5: great standardization. But this gun letter specifically adds shipped to
- 15:16Speaker 5: Antie Oakley, right from the factory to her, and that's
- 15:19Speaker 5: that's as good and solid as you can get. I
- 15:23Speaker 5: think it's also worth mentioning you know, this gun. I
- 15:26Speaker 5: believe it was discovered at a gun show, you know,
- 15:28Speaker 5: I think I think the gentleman purchased it for two
- 15:31Speaker 5: thousand dollars. It was unknown, and then he did the
- 15:34Speaker 5: leg work on getting a letter from the factory and
- 15:37Speaker 5: it going straight to her. But you know, it's incredible
- 15:41Speaker 5: and we see it in everything I mean, what human
- 15:44Speaker 5: air and people. I mean like cold very famously, the
- 15:46Speaker 5: Colt records earned in eighteen sixty one eighteen sixty two,
- 15:51Speaker 5: the factory had a huge fire and that we lost
- 15:53Speaker 5: all their records. Winchester has really good records. Unfortunately Marlin
- 15:57Speaker 5: has poor records, but luckily with this gun, Smith and
- 16:00Speaker 5: Wesson had the records.
- 16:04Speaker 2: Steve and I have been working on an audio book
- 16:07Speaker 2: about the Buffalo Hunters, and I think one of the
- 16:09Speaker 2: more fascinating sources that you can come across. There's a
- 16:13Speaker 2: whole archive from the Sharp's Rifle Manufacturing Company that they
- 16:17Speaker 2: have all these letters from Buffalo hunters, and it's just
- 16:20Speaker 2: amazing that those records are maintained by those companies, and
- 16:23Speaker 2: then all the little tidbits you can pull out of it.
- 16:27Speaker 5: Absolutely it'll shock you both ways, like what we have
- 16:29Speaker 5: and then what we don't have. I mean, I think
- 16:31Speaker 5: we did one of our guys did did one of
- 16:34Speaker 5: your shows previously, and we had that it was a
- 16:36Speaker 5: seventy caliber Hawking rifle that came out of Sagamore Hill,
- 16:38Speaker 5: out of Roosevelt stuff, and in Teddy's own writing it
- 16:42Speaker 5: said Kit Carson's rifle. But like where the connection was
- 16:46Speaker 5: or wasn't to Kit Carson was lost to time history
- 16:50Speaker 5: in space. But in Teddy's own hand it was Kit
- 16:53Speaker 5: Carson's rifle. You know very well it probably was, but
- 16:56Speaker 5: we couldn't place it there. And that's kind of the
- 16:59Speaker 5: frustration you get on chasing down historic guns and trying
- 17:02Speaker 5: to you know, you'd like it to be as simple
- 17:04Speaker 5: and straightforward as if this gun shipped from Springfield, mass
- 17:08Speaker 5: to Antio Oakley in eighteen ninety five. Unfortunately it's not
- 17:12Speaker 5: always the case.
- 17:13Speaker 2: Fascinating, uh, that that marlin you pulled up that looked
- 17:19Speaker 2: like an engraving of a deer on the on the
- 17:21Speaker 2: side of it, Can you describe for our viewers sort
- 17:24Speaker 2: of what the visuals are like on the receiver.
- 17:27Speaker 5: Yeah, so we call it a it's a panel scene.
- 17:29Speaker 5: So on your on your loading gate side. Yeah, we
- 17:32Speaker 5: have a running deer. Then you can see like the
- 17:35Speaker 5: oak leaf and acorn pattern. Then you can see the
- 17:38Speaker 5: multi precious metals. When I roll it, you can see
- 17:40Speaker 5: gold and platinum.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Wow.
- 17:42Speaker 5: And then the large panel scene is a bull, moose
- 17:48Speaker 5: and a cow. And I just wrote, when I roll it,
- 17:50Speaker 5: you can see the condition and condition. What we do
- 17:53Speaker 5: is like location in real estate. It's conditioned condition and
- 17:56Speaker 5: this is I mean, this is a time capsule. And
- 17:58Speaker 5: so like you can see the gold inlay on the hammer,
- 18:03Speaker 5: the carving and the checkering on the wood. I mean Marlin,
- 18:06Speaker 5: you know, Colts and Winchesters are always what we consider
- 18:09Speaker 5: the blue chip but find historic American firearms collecting, you
- 18:11Speaker 5: always think of Coults and Winchester's, But you know, Marlin
- 18:14Speaker 5: is the lever actions like Smith and Wesson is to
- 18:16Speaker 5: the revolvers on on the Colts single actions, and Marlin
- 18:19Speaker 5: doesn't get the credit that it deserves the artists. And
- 18:22Speaker 5: we I say that in every sense of the word.
- 18:24Speaker 5: Who engraved that gun? Conrad Frederick Ulrich actually started at
- 18:28Speaker 5: Winchester and then would move to Marlin and become their
- 18:30Speaker 5: head engraver, and they gave him way more creative freedom
- 18:35Speaker 5: on his guns. He'll sign a lot of his stuff.
- 18:38Speaker 5: A lot of his great guns are signed, and a
- 18:41Speaker 5: lot of them are hidden signatures. So it's it's really neat.
- 18:43Speaker 5: But you know, you think of that as like the ultimate,
- 18:46Speaker 5: the ultimate artistry when you're chiseling steel. I mean, there's
- 18:50Speaker 5: no such thing as a mistake, and you think back then,
- 18:53Speaker 5: it's this is pre electricity. You know, you're doing stuff
- 18:56Speaker 5: in modern and I mean it's natural light and candle
- 18:59Speaker 5: light isn't there's there's no technology. It's very very basic
- 19:03Speaker 5: and simple. So I don't you know, monitoring writers don't
- 19:06Speaker 5: have what what they what these guys did.
- 19:08Speaker 2: That's incredible. Well, Kevin, thank you so much for your
- 19:12Speaker 2: time and for sharing those guns with us here, and
- 19:16Speaker 2: good luck this weekend. We'll be curious to see what
- 19:18Speaker 2: those end up selling.
- 19:20Speaker 5: For absolutely pleasure. Thanks for having means thank you.
- 19:23Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 19:25Speaker 2: Boy. My gun budget is lacking.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Oh boy, do you own any historic guns?
- 19:31Speaker 2: None?
- 19:31Speaker 1: At all, is it like on your radar, is like
- 19:34Speaker 1: an aspirational thing to come in possession of.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Not really, I mean it's I I enjoy going to
- 19:40Speaker 2: firearms museums and looking at guns and especially something like
- 19:44Speaker 2: that where you can sort of marvel at the artistry.
- 19:46Speaker 2: But yeah, I don't guns for me are very utilitarian
- 19:52Speaker 2: or or do. They're just sheer novelty. But I still
- 19:54Speaker 2: want to fire them, you know, you know, I don't
- 19:56Speaker 2: want anything that I have to lock up and keep
- 19:58Speaker 2: keep pretty.
- 20:00Speaker 3: I don't know if you'd want to shoot that marlin. No, never, Yeah,
- 20:03Speaker 3: I mean, value would go down. I imagine, Oh I
- 20:05Speaker 3: think so, I think so it's too beautiful.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Alrighty, Sorry, I got a phone call and move my
- 20:15Speaker 2: browser around, So let me just pull that back up
- 20:17Speaker 2: and get back into the swing of things. Here, we're live.
- 20:20Speaker 2: Our next segment is a hot tip off.
- 20:26Speaker 7: That's salty, that's salty, yes.
- 20:39Speaker 2: Speaking of artistry. Wonderful, wonderful, Phil, thank you. Hot tip
- 20:45Speaker 2: off is where two listeners go head to head with
- 20:48Speaker 2: competing pieces of advice, and after we hear each tip,
- 20:52Speaker 2: we'll declare which one is hotter. If you have a
- 20:54Speaker 2: hot tip, take a minute one minute video on your
- 20:57Speaker 2: phone and email it to radio at the meadeater dot
- 21:00Speaker 2: com with the subject line hot tipoff. This week we
- 21:04Speaker 2: have Austin Rhinds versus Joshua Ross and they are competing
- 21:08Speaker 2: for a one hundred dollars Meat Eater store gift card.
- 21:11Speaker 2: You can get a pile of killer meat Eaters shirts,
- 21:13Speaker 2: hats and hoodies with one hundred dollars and a little
- 21:16Speaker 2: Birdie told me that select logo where twet be Bogo
- 21:22Speaker 2: next week or buy one, get one. Oh mg, that's
- 21:26Speaker 2: huge news, gang, huge news, Phil take it away. Joshua Ross.
- 21:36Speaker 6: Hey, I'm Joshua Ross from upstate New York, and this
- 21:39Speaker 6: is my hot tip. If you're just getting into waterfowl,
- 21:42Speaker 6: or you stretched a little thin, you can maximize your
- 21:45Speaker 6: float or spread turn them into some land decoys under
- 21:48Speaker 6: thirty bucks with some dollars store paper, towel holders and
- 21:52Speaker 6: a couple cans of rustolia. All you do is start
- 21:54Speaker 6: with this, bend it down into this shape, spray pant
- 21:58Speaker 6: to match your decoys. You add some orange for some feet.
- 22:01Speaker 6: Go ahead, slide it on to the keel, yes, stick
- 22:07Speaker 6: it in the gravel sands embankment, and then boom you
- 22:12Speaker 6: turned your floaters into some land decoys, some field decoys,
- 22:16Speaker 6: and you can put some into water or leave them
- 22:18Speaker 6: up on the shore. This is what it should look like,
- 22:21Speaker 6: tant orange orange feet.
- 22:24Speaker 3: That's my hot tip.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Love it, my god, lost in Rihnes, Hey me, did
- 22:34Speaker 2: your crew?
- 22:34Speaker 8: This is Austin from Arkansas, and I've got a hot
- 22:37Speaker 8: tip for y'all. I recently moved from Oklahoma back to Arkansas,
- 22:41Speaker 8: and I had a little bit of an issue. I
- 22:43Speaker 8: got my shoulder mounts and my dead heads and my
- 22:46Speaker 8: European mounts, and I didn't want them to get damaged
- 22:49Speaker 8: in the moving process. So I came up with an idea.
- 22:53Speaker 8: Go down to your local Walmart and get you some
- 22:56Speaker 8: of those five dollars pool noodles real cheap. And I
- 22:59Speaker 8: don't know about the size bucks that y'all are killing,
- 23:02Speaker 8: but for me, the ones I'm killing, or you can
- 23:05Speaker 8: get about one pole noodle for every two deer. And
- 23:08Speaker 8: I got a whole pile over here that I'm gonna
- 23:10Speaker 8: get started hanging up on the walls and decorating. That's
- 23:14Speaker 8: my hot tip. Hope y'all like it. Y'all have a
- 23:16Speaker 8: good one.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Oh my god, I love I love that guy. I
- 23:21Speaker 3: could feel the burn from both those hot tips.
- 23:23Speaker 1: Yeah, two of the hottest tips we've ever gotten. If
- 23:26Speaker 1: they are listening or watching at home, those should be
- 23:28Speaker 1: aspirational video.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Yeah, strong submissions.
- 23:31Speaker 1: When you send us a hot tip the pool.
- 23:33Speaker 4: The poll is live, by the way, get in the
- 23:36Speaker 4: live chat.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Hop in there, gang, ask yourself, is my hot tip
- 23:39Speaker 1: as hot as Josh's or Austin's when you send a
- 23:42Speaker 1: hot tip? Because those those were perfect?
- 23:44Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, and just it's so fortunate that they went
- 23:47Speaker 2: head to head because this I think is a tough,
- 23:49Speaker 2: tough decision here, tough contesting. Yeah, you guys, any initial thoughts, gentlemen.
- 23:54Speaker 1: I I like Austin's that is creative. I've I've never
- 23:57Speaker 1: seen that. But I love Josh was the dollar store
- 24:02Speaker 1: decoy legs to turn your floaters into field decoys. Super clever,
- 24:07Speaker 1: super cheap. It's like a problem solving thing. I'm all
- 24:12Speaker 1: about Josh's. Joshus would have my boat, big fan.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Both very thrifty, which this day and age, got to
- 24:18Speaker 3: be thrifty. Here's what you got, you know, It's tough.
- 24:22Speaker 2: Yeah, I think for me, what what might tip it
- 24:26Speaker 2: towards Joshua is that I wish Austin had a had
- 24:31Speaker 2: had included whatever he uses to protect the nose skulls,
- 24:35Speaker 2: because when I move, I'm not so much worried about
- 24:38Speaker 2: the antler points. I'm worried about the nasal cavity. I
- 24:42Speaker 2: just had one fat wall.
- 24:43Speaker 1: Who hung it there?
- 24:45Speaker 2: Yeah I did, No, I did, And it knocked another
- 24:49Speaker 2: one off. That was fine, and but but the one
- 24:53Speaker 2: shattered the nosebone. And I just feel like, as a society,
- 24:57Speaker 2: we need to come together and figure out a way
- 24:59Speaker 2: to those things bulletproof.
- 25:01Speaker 1: They gave me shivers. Yeah, I know, two euro mounts.
- 25:05Speaker 2: The wildest thing. We were sitting there watching television, you know,
- 25:08Speaker 2: as we do every night, for a few hours and
- 25:12Speaker 2: uh and uh just heard a noise in the other room, said,
- 25:15Speaker 2: my god, what is that.
- 25:16Speaker 1: You just assume it's dogs.
- 25:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:19Speaker 3: The dogs were.
- 25:20Speaker 2: All doing what they're supposed to do, which is just
- 25:22Speaker 2: laying on their sides in front of us. And yeah,
- 25:25Speaker 2: this this one was hung at about six foot six
- 25:27Speaker 2: on the wall, and it fell down and knocked one
- 25:30Speaker 2: down that was at about five foot six. Damn. And
- 25:33Speaker 2: then they hit my computer monitor. Woh. And uh, I
- 25:37Speaker 2: don't know how the one survived. But yeah, it's a
- 25:40Speaker 2: it's a buck that I shot in twenty sixteen.
- 25:43Speaker 3: Everybody wants to know how it fell off the wall.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Drywall RiPP. I think the drywall anchor seemed to be loose, yes,
- 25:49Speaker 2: and so then I went and got, you know, the
- 25:50Speaker 2: drywall ank I'm getting so far a few I put.
- 25:54Speaker 1: I put so much confidence into drywall anchors.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Well, the one, the one that I moved to, is
- 26:00Speaker 2: the drywall anchor that's more cone shaped, that has the
- 26:04Speaker 2: reds the threads on the outside, and not just one
- 26:06Speaker 2: of those that spluts out and grabs the back.
- 26:10Speaker 1: I'm fully on the drywall anchor you're describing. Yeah, the threads,
- 26:14Speaker 1: and I feel like those are like I have fifty
- 26:16Speaker 1: pound ones and seventy.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Five pound ones. No, they make some. They make some
- 26:19Speaker 2: hafty ones.
- 26:20Speaker 3: Yeah, five hundred pound ones. That's what's holding on to
- 26:22Speaker 3: my elk. But I'm gonna go double check those screws.
- 26:24Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:25Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's a wall. I have got like nine
- 26:27Speaker 2: different bucks all hanging on the same wall, and now
- 26:30Speaker 2: it makes me want to take them all down and
- 26:32Speaker 2: replace all the drywall anchors.
- 26:34Speaker 1: All right, I'm voting Josh the dollar stoyed Dollar Store
- 26:37Speaker 1: decoy legs. Cory, you're voting. I like the pool noodles, Okay.
- 26:42Speaker 2: I like the decoy legs, and I just I think
- 26:45Speaker 2: like anytime you can buy something real cheap and it
- 26:48Speaker 2: just adds to your your experience in the field, like
- 26:52Speaker 2: that's pool noodles.
- 26:54Speaker 4: Well, with sixty one percent of the vote, the winner.
- 26:56Speaker 2: Oh, I forgot that we weren't important.
- 26:58Speaker 4: No is jongratulations.
- 27:06Speaker 2: If we're just going off vibes, Austin would have had
- 27:10Speaker 2: my vote. I like that guy's I like that guy's energy.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Randal is encouraging you to send another hot tip off
- 27:16Speaker 1: Austin because your aura alone might just get you to
- 27:20Speaker 1: win one.
- 27:21Speaker 2: Yeah, And if that's you know, I just wonder what
- 27:23Speaker 2: else you got in the in the hopper, what else
- 27:25Speaker 2: you got in the quiver?
- 27:26Speaker 1: There?
- 27:26Speaker 4: You have a lot of people yelling at you to
- 27:28Speaker 4: just hit a stud when you're hanging and not use
- 27:29Speaker 4: drywall anchors.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Well sometimes, well not if you're doing a spread wall.
- 27:34Speaker 2: It's incredible. It's just it's it's artistically. They're scattered across
- 27:38Speaker 2: the wall perfect. So I just think you're wrong.
- 27:41Speaker 1: He doesn't have enough studs in his house.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Yeah, you got too many studs, not enough of the
- 27:47Speaker 2: other kind.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Josh, if you're watching, I'll email you that gift card.
- 27:53Speaker 3: Be on the lookout for that.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Now it's time for some listener feedback. Phil, what do
- 27:59Speaker 2: we got going on in the chat?
- 28:01Speaker 4: Well, please shoot some more questions my way in the
- 28:04Speaker 4: live chat, and we'll do this again at the end
- 28:07Speaker 4: of the show. Nate says asks if the Meat Eater
- 28:11Speaker 4: crew were in the Hunger Games, who would win?
- 28:14Speaker 2: Cal You can you win by not? I don't know
- 28:20Speaker 2: how the rules were.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Well, Peter famously just like camouflaged himself and then laid
- 28:26Speaker 1: next to a stump. That's what he.
- 28:30Speaker 4: Was really good at, camouflaging himself because he was a
- 28:33Speaker 4: pastry chef and decorated cakes. That is true lore in
- 28:37Speaker 4: the Hunger Game.
- 28:37Speaker 2: Who I didn't realize that. Yeah, I was thinking if
- 28:40Speaker 2: you had to score points by killing people, col might
- 28:43Speaker 2: not be it. But I also thought Cow would be
- 28:46Speaker 2: really good because he would just refuse to participate. Yeah,
- 28:50Speaker 2: and he would just kind of sit on the sideline.
- 28:52Speaker 1: He could go to the edge of the map, but
- 28:54Speaker 1: then they the overlords would like send wasps at him
- 28:57Speaker 1: and like hit him with lightning or something thing.
- 29:00Speaker 4: Philip simmer Hoffman. Yeah, I would move the map around.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I'd give Cal a vote. He'd be very good at
- 29:04Speaker 1: being uncomfortable in the Hunger Games experience.
- 29:07Speaker 2: And Steve. I think if if you had to just
- 29:09Speaker 2: go on who might kill the most people, it would
- 29:11Speaker 2: probably be Steve.
- 29:12Speaker 1: He's just angry because he loves.
- 29:13Speaker 2: To have whip knives around. Yeah. Yeah, I think he's
- 29:18Speaker 2: just waiting for that green light.
- 29:20Speaker 3: I've had the same conversation, but not Hunger Games, but
- 29:23Speaker 3: the show alone.
- 29:25Speaker 7: You know.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Yeah, that's Cal because he just wouldn't want to come
- 29:29Speaker 2: back like this's great. There's no phones, whatever, it takes
- 29:33Speaker 2: the same. No one's asking me to do anything.
- 29:34Speaker 1: No one's bugging me about radio. Bringing a show and
- 29:38Speaker 1: tell item to radio live.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that would be good an experience.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Lewin says, do you all have any strong feelings on
- 29:44Speaker 4: orange camo? Does it work? Not work? Is it a
- 29:47Speaker 4: bad compromise?
- 29:49Speaker 2: Orange camo?
- 29:51Speaker 1: I I'm not passionate about this. If I was in
- 29:54Speaker 1: a stint where I was archery hunting during a gun
- 29:57Speaker 1: season where it was required as an archer hunt that
- 30:00Speaker 1: I had to wear camo, which I think is Illinois
- 30:03Speaker 1: or Missouri one of those states, I'd be like, Okay,
- 30:07Speaker 1: I will wear orange camel outside of that if you
- 30:09Speaker 1: are gun hunting, if you are killing an animal that
- 30:12Speaker 1: is further than twenty yards away from you, I'm not
- 30:16Speaker 1: sold on needing to wear orange camo.
- 30:19Speaker 3: Good point.
- 30:19Speaker 1: I like how it looks though.
- 30:20Speaker 3: It looks cool.
- 30:21Speaker 1: It looks cool. It looks like, you know, you got
- 30:24Speaker 1: that item from your dad who wore it in the eighties.
- 30:26Speaker 2: I also like the I used to have an orange
- 30:30Speaker 2: vest I think when I moved out to Montana that
- 30:32Speaker 2: had like sort of the black tree bark print on.
- 30:35Speaker 3: Yes, that looked tough.
- 30:36Speaker 2: That looked tough, But yeah, I'm more of just an
- 30:39Speaker 2: orange mesh and function guy. Yeah, you know in Montana.
- 30:43Speaker 3: Here he's just so broken up anyway, at least backpack straps,
- 30:46Speaker 3: binocular harness. I don't know all my fixings bloodstains from last.
- 30:51Speaker 4: Year, Nate says Spencer. How long till the next Wives
- 30:54Speaker 4: and Girlfriends Trivia episode? My wife loves them and once more,
- 30:57Speaker 4: definitely some of the best episodes.
- 30:59Speaker 1: I was just checking with my wife this week about
- 31:02Speaker 1: dates that would work with her. Now I have to
- 31:04Speaker 1: reach out to the other wives, but I will try
- 31:07Speaker 1: to do one this year. It's our most viewed trivia
- 31:10Speaker 1: episode in the history of YouTube, so if we need
- 31:13Speaker 1: to like juice the numbers. Yeah, we'll just get all
- 31:16Speaker 1: the wives and girlfriends in here because folks want to
- 31:19Speaker 1: run over to YouTube and watch them play trivia. So
- 31:21Speaker 1: we will do it again. Nate excellent. Our household looks
- 31:24Speaker 1: forward to that.
- 31:26Speaker 2: What else we got?
- 31:26Speaker 4: Phil Mogor says, Hi, Steve hunted in Africa, Yanni, and Lithuania.
- 31:32Speaker 4: I would say, was he in Lithuania via Latvia? Do
- 31:36Speaker 4: you have any Baltic similar dreams or plans outside of
- 31:40Speaker 4: the United States for hunting in the future.
- 31:43Speaker 3: I always wanted to kill a Siberian tiger. I don't
- 31:46Speaker 3: know if that's legal.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Though, you're not taking this question very seriously.
- 31:50Speaker 1: I want to hunt Canada real bad. I want to
- 31:52Speaker 1: hunt Alberta or Saskatchewan for a big old white tailed buck.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Their laws make it hard to do that. As a
- 32:00Speaker 1: DIY hunter from the United States, you have to have
- 32:03Speaker 1: a guide. Their guide regulations are fairly stinging about like
- 32:10Speaker 1: what your relationship with the guide can be, as far
- 32:12Speaker 1: as like if they drop you off, if they are
- 32:14Speaker 1: within eyesight of you if they like pick the location
- 32:18Speaker 1: where you're sitting. So, while I feel like I have
- 32:21Speaker 1: some connections to go hunting Canada, at some point it
- 32:25Speaker 1: wouldn't be with a guide in a traditional sense, and
- 32:28Speaker 1: so I just don't want to even mess with it
- 32:30Speaker 1: as a dude who prefers to just like go do
- 32:32Speaker 1: a diy thing. But if I could kill a big
- 32:35Speaker 1: old whitetail buck in Sasketchwana or Alberta, that would satisfy
- 32:39Speaker 1: all my foreign hunting dreams. There you go.
- 32:42Speaker 2: This is a dream, not a plan because it won't happen.
- 32:45Speaker 2: But I think if I had, if I were given
- 32:48Speaker 2: the option of one international hunt, it would probably be
- 32:51Speaker 2: an Ibex in Central Asia, just in those giant, scary
- 32:56Speaker 2: big mountains that just looks like a super cool experience
- 32:59Speaker 2: and obviously like you do it with a network of
- 33:01Speaker 2: local guides and get to eat weird stuff and drink
- 33:04Speaker 2: weird stuff and have a weird time.
- 33:06Speaker 1: All those guys are expert falconry folks.
- 33:09Speaker 2: It seems like, yeah, no, it'd be cool. Africa also
- 33:13Speaker 2: would be very cool. Uh we did I got to
- 33:17Speaker 2: go hunt in Old Mexico?
- 33:18Speaker 3: Oh?
- 33:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I am an international hunter.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Yes, I am an international hunter. Straightened the necktie on
- 33:24Speaker 2: my T shirt.
- 33:25Speaker 3: That does look like a lot of fun.
- 33:27Speaker 2: Thank you Mogor for a great question.
- 33:29Speaker 1: One more, I have what I have have deemed to
- 33:32Speaker 1: be the White Tail time Zone Slam, just like the
- 33:36Speaker 1: traditional time zones, but there's one way way east. It
- 33:41Speaker 1: is it Nova Scotia that has it. It's in its
- 33:43Speaker 1: own maritime I think it's maritime. So if I wanted to, like,
- 33:47Speaker 1: you know, there's like the Grand Slam of Turkeys and
- 33:49Speaker 1: then like the Super Slam or whatever. The tiered system
- 33:53Speaker 1: is there. If I want to go to the next
- 33:54Speaker 1: tier of the White Tail time Zone Slam, I need
- 33:57Speaker 1: to get to Nova Scotia at some point or whatever
- 33:59Speaker 1: is in that furthest Eastern time zone.
- 34:03Speaker 2: I love that for you.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Someday, let's do it someday.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Is that it for listener feedback? Phil? Should we move on?
- 34:11Speaker 4: Yeah, it's good, move on. We can hit some more
- 34:12Speaker 4: at the end of the show.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Sure there's some other good ones.
- 34:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I got a couple started. There was one that
- 34:16Speaker 4: I will I'll just go ahead and bring it up
- 34:17Speaker 4: now because you guys might plead the fifth on it.
- 34:18Speaker 4: But this was for Corey. This was also from Nay.
- 34:20Speaker 4: He said, what's the coldest tip anyone's ever submitted? I
- 34:23Speaker 4: don't know if one stands out to you. I was like, wow,
- 34:25Speaker 4: this is this is rough. But also if you don't
- 34:27Speaker 4: want to hurt people's feelings, we're a very positive show.
- 34:30Speaker 2: No you should name them.
- 34:32Speaker 5: Oh man, there.
- 34:33Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a few that I certainly don't finish watching
- 34:37Speaker 3: because it's like this is either way too you know,
- 34:39Speaker 3: out of reach, way too common, way too whatever. I
- 34:43Speaker 3: don't think there's any cold ones because everybody brings the enthusiasm.
- 34:46Speaker 3: If you have the time to film and send an
- 34:49Speaker 3: email there, we're warm enough.
- 34:51Speaker 2: Everybody's got a trick or two up your sleeve.
- 34:53Speaker 3: Keep them coming because it's kind of dry out there.
- 34:56Speaker 4: Get those hot tips in.
- 34:56Speaker 3: I wish I had an answer for you, but nothing
- 34:59Speaker 3: jumps out that's ice cold.
- 35:00Speaker 4: Yeah, because otherwise we have to ask Giannis and then
- 35:02Speaker 4: he sends something that's I mean pretty cold.
- 35:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:06Speaker 1: I've seen some of the hot tip submissions. I would
- 35:08Speaker 1: say the coldest ones are ones that come in and
- 35:12Speaker 1: I hear it and I'm like, I know you heard
- 35:14Speaker 1: that on the Meat Eater podcast. Oh yeah, that thing
- 35:17Speaker 1: that you're saying is a hot tip you heard from.
- 35:20Speaker 2: Cheapulars on a tripod.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, so that that was probably the coldest tips
- 35:25Speaker 1: that we get.
- 35:25Speaker 2: Another great question, jeez. Well, our next segment is Meat
- 35:30Speaker 2: Eater Movie Club. This week we're so I put the
- 35:44Speaker 2: h I put the pause for sound in the wrong place.
- 35:47Speaker 2: We're live this week we're reviewing the nineteen ninety seven
- 35:50Speaker 2: American adventure comedy film directed by William Deer, written by
- 35:54Speaker 2: David Michael Wieger, and starring Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Devin Sawa,
- 35:58Speaker 2: and Scott Barstow. See, I think the sound would go
- 36:01Speaker 2: better there.
- 36:02Speaker 4: Well, you also didn't name the movie yet.
- 36:04Speaker 2: Wild America. Thanks for putting that together, Corey. All right,
- 36:13Speaker 2: this is the film. The cover of the film, the
- 36:15Speaker 2: poster so serious, says, take a ride on the wild side,
- 36:19Speaker 2: and it has our young heroes. Child actors don't get
- 36:24Speaker 2: more coyly camera wise than Jonathan Taylor Thomas, the fifteen
- 36:29Speaker 2: year old star and narrator of Wild America, a tepid
- 36:33Speaker 2: family adventure film whose grizzly bears appear only slightly more
- 36:37Speaker 2: threatening than giant stuffed animals. As Marshall Stofer the youngest
- 36:41Speaker 2: of three brothers growing up in Fort Smith, Arkansas, in
- 36:43Speaker 2: nineteen sixty seven. Thomas looks like a baby Brad Pitt
- 36:47Speaker 2: and acts as though he's been born and brought up
- 36:49Speaker 2: on the MGM law in the nineteen thirties, then whisked
- 36:52Speaker 2: sixty years into the future with his Shirley Temple meets
- 36:55Speaker 2: Mickey Rooney mannerisms. Intact, all three lead actors in the
- 36:59Speaker 2: film have the kind of delicate looks that make Tiger
- 37:02Speaker 2: Beat readers go hummina, hummina, and their cute foxiness will
- 37:07Speaker 2: will have to be enough to drum up interest in
- 37:09Speaker 2: this movie. Those very words were published in The New
- 37:12Speaker 2: York Times on July second, nineteen ninety seven, except for
- 37:15Speaker 2: the second sentence or the third, I should say, the
- 37:18Speaker 2: one that mentions tiger Beat. That's from a syndicated piece
- 37:21Speaker 2: published in the Saint Paul Pioneer Press the same day.
- 37:24Speaker 2: I included those words here only because I thought they
- 37:26Speaker 2: would be funny to pretend that they were my own
- 37:29Speaker 2: fool me that fell flat pez I liked it, hey.
- 37:34Speaker 2: The premise of the film is fairly straightforward. Three brothers
- 37:37Speaker 2: whose father has spent a lifetime lying to one of
- 37:39Speaker 2: them about his ability to fly an airplane, decide to
- 37:42Speaker 2: drive across the country in search of a cave full
- 37:44Speaker 2: of hibernating bears. They do this, as best I can tell,
- 37:48Speaker 2: in the middle of the summer. The oldest, Marty, is
- 37:51Speaker 2: a maniacal bully, dead set on making wildlife films so
- 37:54Speaker 2: he doesn't have to suffer the indignity of inheriting the
- 37:56Speaker 2: family carburetor cleaning business. The middle brother, whose name I
- 38:00Speaker 2: do not recall, serves no real purpose. The youngest, played
- 38:03Speaker 2: by Jonathan Taylor Thomas I think, was named Marshall. Their
- 38:07Speaker 2: misadventures along the journey, most of which I'll admit from
- 38:09Speaker 2: this review, are partially explained by how bad their map is.
- 38:13Speaker 2: We only get a glimpse of it once, but it's
- 38:14Speaker 2: a bad map, although it's hard to explain why it's
- 38:17Speaker 2: so bad without a visual aid. At some point, a
- 38:20Speaker 2: strangely proportioned moose carries Marshall into a river. The brothers encounting.
- 38:25Speaker 2: The brothers encounter Danny Glover, who makes an uncredited appearance
- 38:29Speaker 2: wearing antlers on his head. He tells them to go
- 38:32Speaker 2: look for a disfigured woman whose dead fiance was eaten
- 38:35Speaker 2: in the bear cave after the mean brother breaks the
- 38:37Speaker 2: boring brother's leg as they take a tumble in the snow,
- 38:40Speaker 2: and then that brother immediately forgives the other while still
- 38:43Speaker 2: lying there in the snow with a broken leg. They
- 38:45Speaker 2: then see a woman in the graveyard, and the youngest
- 38:48Speaker 2: brother impressively remembers the disfigured woman's name as well as
- 38:52Speaker 2: that of her dead boyfriend, Judd, although she only refers
- 38:54Speaker 2: to him curiously as my jud and he also remembers
- 38:58Speaker 2: the date of his death or was it his birthday,
- 39:01Speaker 2: which also was the day they were going to get married,
- 39:03Speaker 2: which stuck out to me as one of the stranger
- 39:05Speaker 2: little details in this film. Anyway, they follow the tracks
- 39:09Speaker 2: of the woman's horse to the bear cave, which is
- 39:11Speaker 2: oddly close to her home. They go in, the bears
- 39:14Speaker 2: wake up, and there's a lot happening all at once.
- 39:16Speaker 2: Then the brothers sing about mountain dew to put the
- 39:19Speaker 2: bears back to sleep, when bats start shitting on them.
- 39:22Speaker 2: The resulting explosion of their flashlight stirs up the bats,
- 39:25Speaker 2: who seem to form part of the cave wall, so
- 39:27Speaker 2: when they fly away, there is now a hole in
- 39:29Speaker 2: the cave. That lets in light that wakes up the bears.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Why the boys don't try the Mountain dew jingle again
- 39:35Speaker 2: is not explained to the viewer because it worked so
- 39:37Speaker 2: well the first time. Then there's actually another hole in
- 39:41Speaker 2: the cave that the youngest brother climbs out of. It
- 39:43Speaker 2: would seem that this cave would not be a very
- 39:45Speaker 2: good place to hibernate due to all of the holes.
- 39:49Speaker 2: Then someone else falls in the snow heard my review
- 39:52Speaker 2: gets scattered. The younger brother drives home and begins pretending
- 39:56Speaker 2: he was in an airplane. While pretending he was in
- 39:58Speaker 2: an airplane, he crashes the car. There's still thirty minutes
- 40:02Speaker 2: left in the film. This is the note I have here.
- 40:05Speaker 1: I had that same feeling.
- 40:06Speaker 2: Then there's another broken leg. The grumpy old dad breaks
- 40:09Speaker 2: his leg too, but the kid's broken leg is healed now.
- 40:12Speaker 2: And then the dad, who has a cigar in his
- 40:14Speaker 2: mouth well bedroom in the hospital, tells the family that
- 40:16Speaker 2: a guy in Pittsburgh will give them six bits apiece
- 40:19Speaker 2: for some auto parts that represent the family's emergency savings.
- 40:23Speaker 2: Jonathan Taylor Thomas fires up the plane that the dad
- 40:26Speaker 2: pretended he could fly, but the kid can actually fly it,
- 40:29Speaker 2: and he imagines his dad in the backseat. When they
- 40:32Speaker 2: make amends with one another at the hospital. The boy
- 40:35Speaker 2: tells the viewer in a voiceover that he's never told
- 40:37Speaker 2: anyone what happened between him and his dad that day,
- 40:40Speaker 2: which is odd because you think everyone could tell that
- 40:42Speaker 2: they've forgiven one another. Describing this film made me like
- 40:46Speaker 2: it less.
- 40:50Speaker 1: Overall thoughts, I don't need to see this movie again.
- 40:55Speaker 1: I don't need to recommend this to anybody. I don't
- 40:58Speaker 1: think I watched this when I was a kid, obviously not.
- 41:01Speaker 1: I would have been five years old when it came out.
- 41:04Speaker 1: I'm a little surprised that I wasn't more familiar with
- 41:08Speaker 1: anything about the movie. And then I watched it, and
- 41:10Speaker 1: I was like, well, that's why I wasn't familiar. Nobody
- 41:12Speaker 1: was like, really, parading this around is a great piece
- 41:15Speaker 1: of cinema from when I was a kid.
- 41:17Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 41:18Speaker 3: Yeah, Unless you watch this as a kid, it doesn't
- 41:20Speaker 3: have the same.
- 41:22Speaker 4: You know, yeah vibe.
- 41:24Speaker 2: There's a lot of elements that are difficult to believe
- 41:27Speaker 2: in the film.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Can I tell you some things I liked?
- 41:29Speaker 2: I'd love to it's next in my prompt here.
- 41:32Speaker 1: They had some real ass animals in the movie sometimes,
- 41:36Speaker 1: which was like here and there. Yeah, it's like a
- 41:38Speaker 1: hard thing to do is have like the owl. Initially
- 41:41Speaker 1: I was like, oh, that's a real it's kind of fun.
- 41:44Speaker 3: Yeah, landing on Jonathan Taylor Thomas's arm without a glove on.
- 41:47Speaker 1: That's right. And then it shows up in Valley of
- 41:50Speaker 1: the Gods of Arizona.
- 41:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Later on.
- 41:53Speaker 1: Oddly, I liked that the boys were filming Jackass thirty
- 41:56Speaker 1: years before. I was like that that should be the thought.
- 42:01Speaker 2: My thought at that moment was, God, it was so
- 42:03Speaker 2: nice when like kids did this stuff and they couldn't
- 42:05Speaker 2: put it on the internet, so it didn't become their
- 42:07Speaker 2: entire personality.
- 42:09Speaker 3: Like the m eighties.
- 42:09Speaker 4: In the pool.
- 42:10Speaker 1: Oh yeah, some good music I liked, you know, they
- 42:14Speaker 1: had Susie cbe by CCR. They had a magic carpet ride.
- 42:17Speaker 1: I just enjoyed the music they served me. And then
- 42:20Speaker 1: I enjoyed the scene where the two older brothers are
- 42:23Speaker 1: peeing upstream and John and the Taylor Thomas is filling
- 42:26Speaker 1: his canteen downstream.
- 42:28Speaker 2: Yes, I enjoyed that, and then he and then he
- 42:31Speaker 2: gave it to them to drink. Yes, And it was
- 42:34Speaker 2: unclear I thought whether or not he was in on
- 42:37Speaker 2: the drink.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I felt the same way.
- 42:39Speaker 2: I don't think they played that up enough.
- 42:40Speaker 1: No, it seemed like he was. He was sort of
- 42:42Speaker 1: cheeky about it.
- 42:43Speaker 2: Yeah he did know.
- 42:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I liked that.
- 42:46Speaker 3: That's the end of the list of the things I liked, Corey.
- 42:49Speaker 3: This brought back some serious nostalgia as I was. Yeah,
- 42:52Speaker 3: it came out when in ninety seven, so I would
- 42:55Speaker 3: have been nine. Probably didn't watch it right away, but
- 42:58Speaker 3: watched it, you know, fairly quickly. And I watched it
- 43:00Speaker 3: with my seven year old boy last night. He loved it,
- 43:04Speaker 3: and he loved it. There was scenes where I'm just like,
- 43:06Speaker 3: are you kidding me? Like when JTT gets picked up
- 43:08Speaker 3: by the moose and it's very apparent that it's two dudes.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Yeah, was it a horse? There were two guys. There
- 43:16Speaker 2: are two guys just sort of skipping wearing a moose suit.
- 43:18Speaker 2: There's one there's one shot in particular where it's very
- 43:21Speaker 2: clearly just two guys in a brown bag holding a
- 43:24Speaker 2: moose head in front of them.
- 43:25Speaker 3: Yeah, and I was watching him. I looked over and
- 43:28Speaker 3: looked at my son Marshall, which is just fun too.
- 43:31Speaker 2: Oh Yeah, himself as the bullied younger brother.
- 43:34Speaker 3: He loved hearing his name yelled a lot, and he's
- 43:37Speaker 3: loving it so and I'm like rolling my eyes and
- 43:39Speaker 3: he's just like in heaven watching this. And then when
- 43:42Speaker 3: it came to the Cave of a Thousand Bears or
- 43:45Speaker 3: ten Bears or whatever, ended up being same thing, super cheesy.
- 43:48Speaker 3: I don't know why or who came up with the
- 43:51Speaker 3: idea to bring in the fake bear costumes when they
- 43:53Speaker 3: had live bears.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Yeah, it was a weird mixture of robots and.
- 43:57Speaker 1: Taxi yeah, animatronics, real bears.
- 44:00Speaker 2: It reminded me of this. I went to a Chuck
- 44:04Speaker 2: E Cheese as an adult, yes, and and it was
- 44:08Speaker 2: it was horrifying. I was like, how is this even?
- 44:11Speaker 2: How can a kid even withstand this overwhelming sensation of
- 44:16Speaker 2: just being surrounded by robots popping out of the wall.
- 44:18Speaker 2: But that's what it brought me back to.
- 44:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:21Speaker 3: Well, but again, his imagination was able to follow and
- 44:24Speaker 3: track the whole thing, and it was much more fun
- 44:27Speaker 3: to watch as a kid, no doubt.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think if I were to have
- 44:33Speaker 2: to show a movie to a child, this is not
- 44:36Speaker 2: a bad one to show. Like, there's nothing there's nothing
- 44:39Speaker 2: horrible about it. It's just like a series of sort
- 44:42Speaker 2: of bizarre scenarios involving wildlife caught on film and there's
- 44:49Speaker 2: nothing offensive. It's it's just very campy. It reminded me
- 44:52Speaker 2: of The Sandlot, yes, in terms of the vibes just
- 44:57Speaker 2: but I think for me, one of the things I
- 44:59Speaker 2: like the best is it just harkens back to the
- 45:03Speaker 2: golden age of older brothers bullying younger brothers and no
- 45:07Speaker 2: one seeming to have any Like they're tying him to
- 45:10Speaker 2: a chair and then hoisting him into a tree and
- 45:13Speaker 2: then cutting the rope and throwing fireworks on him, and
- 45:16Speaker 2: it's just it goes it's unremarkable to everyone. Or they're
- 45:20Speaker 2: dragging him around behind the truck. Although the college girls
- 45:24Speaker 2: college girls didn't like that.
- 45:25Speaker 3: Yeah, no, they weren't impressed.
- 45:28Speaker 2: And Danny Glover, I think was probably my favorite part.
- 45:31Speaker 2: But like they shot a deer in the beginning of
- 45:34Speaker 2: the movie, I mean, like the crossbow I was in
- 45:37Speaker 2: the summer.
- 45:37Speaker 1: Yeah, the college girls were home for a christ summer break, right,
- 45:42Speaker 1: and then the brothers declared, they say, you can't hunt
- 45:45Speaker 1: with us DC if you're gonna do it the wrong way. Yeah,
- 45:48Speaker 1: something like that.
- 45:48Speaker 2: Yeah, and and they're reading outdoor life, like I think
- 45:51Speaker 2: there were it was more true to like hunting and
- 45:54Speaker 2: fishing nostalgia than I would have would have guessed, you know,
- 46:00Speaker 2: like it was it wouldn't be made today in that
- 46:02Speaker 2: same way. Like in the nineties it was still sort
- 46:06Speaker 2: of like this is just traditional Americana. Sure, So I
- 46:10Speaker 2: don't know. I think there's a lot of things I
- 46:14Speaker 2: found wrong with it, but ultimately like it's a harmless
- 46:17Speaker 2: piece of cinema that if you have kids that like
- 46:19Speaker 2: the outdoors, it would I think it would work.
- 46:21Speaker 1: Yeah, it's not for us. It's not for us to
- 46:24Speaker 1: be like, well, they got every single wildlife scene wrong
- 46:28Speaker 1: in this movie. They were in the Valley of the
- 46:30Speaker 1: Gods of Arizona and they encountered like an asiatic deer
- 46:33Speaker 1: who's getting haunted by a big great wife.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Yeah, the deer and then F four phantoms. And it
- 46:40Speaker 2: was so funny because when the planes came in, I
- 46:44Speaker 2: write down on my notepad F four phantoms, and then
- 46:47Speaker 2: Jonathan Taylor Thomas like two seconds later, four phantoms.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Wow you felt good there?
- 46:53Speaker 2: Oh, I mean there was no doubt in my mind.
- 46:55Speaker 2: It's such a distinctive, such a distinctive silhouette of an
- 46:59Speaker 2: air plane.
- 47:00Speaker 1: But Phil, I had slacked you a picture. Could you
- 47:03Speaker 1: pull that up? When we were talking about the scene
- 47:06Speaker 1: of the Bears, I had to stop it in this way.
- 47:09Speaker 1: I had to stop it because of the clearly like
- 47:11Speaker 1: animatronic bear. But then also you see a cameraman or
- 47:16Speaker 1: like a boom mic, you see someone who's not supposed
- 47:18Speaker 1: to be in the shot holding something off to the side.
- 47:21Speaker 1: That was a real treat to wild They.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Could have done without that.
- 47:26Speaker 1: They were doing it.
- 47:27Speaker 2: I mean, like the Sandlot sort of stand by me.
- 47:29Speaker 2: It's also an age when like child actors are just
- 47:33Speaker 2: sort of there's no real depth to their performance, and
- 47:37Speaker 2: the brothers are just like snapping at each other. My
- 47:40Speaker 2: favorite part was he goes, he goes, I'm sorry, I
- 47:44Speaker 2: forgive you. I know it was an accident.
- 47:47Speaker 3: After he breaks the leg, it does a great drop
- 47:50Speaker 3: job tromping through the snow with that broken leg.
- 47:52Speaker 2: Yeah, and then the cast is gone.
- 47:55Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 47:56Speaker 2: The quick pitches were so small. Yes, the doctor goes
- 47:59Speaker 2: in the crutches and then come up to his waist
- 48:01Speaker 2: and he's like, have you used crutches before? And I
- 48:02Speaker 2: was like have you given crutches to a patient before?
- 48:05Speaker 2: Because these are clearly the wrong size.
- 48:08Speaker 1: And the bear scene that was like climax one of four.
- 48:12Speaker 1: The movie had like four climaxes.
- 48:14Speaker 2: The alligator chase, the planes bombing them, the horse stampede,
- 48:20Speaker 2: and then the weird scene with the disfigured woman where
- 48:23Speaker 2: she pulls out like a portrait that was taken in
- 48:25Speaker 2: the nineties at at like a mall photo studio, even
- 48:29Speaker 2: though this is taking place in nineteen sixty seven, which
- 48:31Speaker 2: also bothered me because Steppenwolf's Born to Be Wild was
- 48:34Speaker 2: not at least the phone.
- 48:37Speaker 1: I did also personally enjoy seeing DC in the movie
- 48:43Speaker 1: the Redhead character because he was in two episodes of
- 48:47Speaker 1: Deadwood as the hotel clerk, and he becomes a very
- 48:51Speaker 1: pivotal part of the story because he craps his pants
- 48:54Speaker 1: because he was drunk, and he goes down to the
- 48:56Speaker 1: creek to wash the crap out of his pants, and
- 48:58Speaker 1: while he's there, it's another pair of his pants that
- 49:01Speaker 1: he theorizes he'd left there from a past drunk incident
- 49:05Speaker 1: where he also crapped his pants and went to the
- 49:07Speaker 1: creek to wash them out, and in one of his
- 49:09Speaker 1: soiled breeches. He finds the last letter that wild Bill
- 49:13Speaker 1: Hiccock ever wrote, which sort of like propels us into
- 49:17Speaker 1: this new series of characters and bad guys. Right, So
- 49:20Speaker 1: that's a role that DC plays in my favorite show ever,
- 49:23Speaker 1: dead Wood.
- 49:24Speaker 2: I just like that. There's sort of a trope thinking
- 49:28Speaker 2: of the Christmas Christmas story, there's this trope of a
- 49:32Speaker 2: bully who's who's actually just sort of incompetent, but he's
- 49:38Speaker 2: just a bully and it's a guy with red hair.
- 49:42Speaker 1: That hits hard.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm like, God, maybe I'm not a unique individual.
- 49:48Speaker 2: Clearly I had a past life somewhere.
- 49:50Speaker 1: You were destined to be a bully.
- 49:52Speaker 4: I know, I know.
- 49:53Speaker 2: But like Scott Farcas and that guy, I feel like
- 49:55Speaker 2: came out of the same gene pool.
- 49:59Speaker 3: I could feel after that, my son and I will
- 50:01Speaker 3: probably go down the wild America. Marty Staufer rabbit Hole, Oh.
- 50:05Speaker 2: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 50:06Speaker 1: During the credits when they play actual footage from what
- 50:09Speaker 1: I assume is is Marty's documentary work, it's phenomenal. It
- 50:13Speaker 1: is so charming. I love that.
- 50:15Speaker 2: And he's in the film somewhere. I think, Oh, I
- 50:18Speaker 2: think I was.
- 50:18Speaker 1: Watching for that, But I didn't. I never saw him,
- 50:20Speaker 1: and I was like, oh, there's Marty.
- 50:22Speaker 2: So I deleted this line. Or I shouldn't say I deleted.
- 50:25Speaker 2: I just didn't read it said. If you like The Sandlot,
- 50:28Speaker 2: if you like Forrest Gump, if you like Wild Animals
- 50:31Speaker 2: or Danny Glover, you'll enjoy this lighthearted romp. If you
- 50:34Speaker 2: like Marty Stoffer, you probably won't like this film because
- 50:37Speaker 2: it makes him seem like a really bad guy. Yes,
- 50:40Speaker 2: I've never like seen a story that's like the true
- 50:43Speaker 2: story of this beloved figure. Yea, and the guy who's
- 50:47Speaker 2: playing him is just sort of like the asshole, the.
- 50:49Speaker 3: Older brother gotta be tough.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I don't feel like he's really redeemed.
- 50:55Speaker 1: Or if your name is Marshall and you're seven years old,
- 50:57Speaker 1: yes you'll love this movie. It might might be calm
- 50:59Speaker 1: a little bit of your personality.
- 51:01Speaker 3: I gotta watch out for those late nineties PG movies
- 51:04Speaker 3: because there's a few curse words in there which he
- 51:06Speaker 3: looked at me after every single one.
- 51:08Speaker 2: That's good.
- 51:09Speaker 3: But if you watch this show, you're used to that.
- 51:11Speaker 2: Yeah, that's good. He needs he needs exposure.
- 51:13Speaker 3: Oh, he gets plenty of it.
- 51:14Speaker 2: He listens going into second grade. He's gonna be using forfanity.
- 51:17Speaker 2: That's like a pirate.
- 51:20Speaker 4: How we do with Phil?
- 51:21Speaker 2: Should we move on to the next segment or do
- 51:22Speaker 2: you need more information about Wild America.
- 51:26Speaker 4: I think I'm satisfied.
- 51:27Speaker 8: Phil.
- 51:28Speaker 1: Can you tell me like something about Jonathan Taylor Thomas,
- 51:30Speaker 1: just anything, like what your memory is of him in
- 51:32Speaker 1: the nineties, he would be in like a child actor
- 51:35Speaker 1: tier of like to Panga maybe keenan.
- 51:39Speaker 4: Oh, Jonathan lip Nikki he was big bell yeah, I
- 51:42Speaker 4: mean like I mean j T T not because unlike
- 51:45Speaker 4: lip Nikki, he was a heart throb too. No offense
- 51:48Speaker 4: to Niki, but he had that I mean that whole
- 51:50Speaker 4: tiger bee waka waka whatever you said over there, pamaahamana.
- 51:53Speaker 4: The waka waka is Fozzy Bear.
- 51:56Speaker 1: Hayley, Joel Osmon. He'd be like in that tier. I
- 51:58Speaker 1: feel like of nineties child star.
- 52:00Speaker 4: Well, I mean yeah, JTT had trouble breaking out of
- 52:03Speaker 4: TV though.
- 52:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean improvement well, Tom and Huck Yeah played
- 52:08Speaker 2: like I I just think it's it's unconscionable that we've
- 52:13Speaker 2: been talking about JTT this whole time without acknowledging the
- 52:18Speaker 2: cultural masterpiece that is Home Improvement, and he's joined by
- 52:23Speaker 2: another three named child star Zachary ty Bryan on that show,
- 52:28Speaker 2: Who's the dufast with the blonde hair?
- 52:31Speaker 3: Let's not forget JTT was Simba.
- 52:33Speaker 2: Oh that's right. Yeah, and god, he does look like
- 52:36Speaker 2: a legitimate child of Brad Pitt, doesn't he. That's not
- 52:40Speaker 2: my thought, that's just Devin.
- 52:42Speaker 4: Devin Sawa also had big team beat energy. I think
- 52:45Speaker 4: they like this movie. The casting was definitely I think
- 52:48Speaker 4: purposeful and trying to get that those thirteen year old girls.
- 52:53Speaker 2: Phil has everybody dropped out of the chat? Oh no,
- 52:56Speaker 2: we haven't lost anybody.
- 52:58Speaker 4: I think. I think the Star viewership is actually at
- 53:01Speaker 4: its peak right now.
- 53:02Speaker 3: Oh God, God, better keep this going.
- 53:08Speaker 2: That's good. Let's roll on into the top three.
- 53:12Speaker 5: Yo.
- 53:20Speaker 4: See, wouldn't it be coolf we just had like a
- 53:21Speaker 4: light show going on? Yes it would where. This is
- 53:23Speaker 4: why we need a new studio because people who are
- 53:30Speaker 4: just listening to this, they're probably like, Okay, I'll sit
- 53:32Speaker 4: through this stupid song for fifteen seconds. But people who
- 53:34Speaker 4: are watching are just watching Randall Spencer and Corey stare
- 53:37Speaker 4: at their computer.
- 53:39Speaker 2: Sorry, I used to do the dance thing, you know.
- 53:41Speaker 2: I used to dance along, and I feel like that
- 53:43Speaker 2: bit is run its course and I like to just
- 53:46Speaker 2: enjoy the music.
- 53:46Speaker 4: Okay, I get that.
- 53:51Speaker 2: I don't have any text prepared to introduce this segment.
- 53:53Speaker 2: But Top three is where we rank our top three
- 53:56Speaker 2: of things in a certain category, although we're doing a
- 53:59Speaker 2: new spin on that today where we each got to
- 54:01Speaker 2: choose our own category.
- 54:04Speaker 1: Yes, in the past we were all ranking from the
- 54:07Speaker 1: same thing. And then Jannis and I about went to
- 54:09Speaker 1: fisticuffs over a topic, and so we said, here, here's
- 54:12Speaker 1: the solution. We're all just going to bring our own
- 54:13Speaker 1: list freestyle on subject. Phil included, Phil is going to
- 54:17Speaker 1: do once that's right, and I asked him to really
- 54:19Speaker 1: fill it up today. So I'm excited to hear whatever
- 54:23Speaker 1: he has.
- 54:23Speaker 2: And I really struggled with with this assignment. I like
- 54:28Speaker 2: to have clear orders, marching orders. So Phil, you can
- 54:32Speaker 2: bring up my number one or my number three. O.
- 54:36Speaker 2: This works, Oh good, this is this is my number three.
- 54:39Speaker 2: And I had a hard time going back to your list.
- 54:43Speaker 2: I'll get I was gonna go with my favorite fishing
- 54:46Speaker 2: hats of all time, and so I started going through
- 54:49Speaker 2: my list my photos of fishing, and then I thought
- 54:52Speaker 2: I could sort of combine that with the three worst
- 54:54Speaker 2: photos of me holding a fish. So this is a
- 54:59Speaker 2: photo of me floating the Missouri River breaks in the
- 55:04Speaker 2: summer of two thousand and eight, and I I'm gonna
- 55:08Speaker 2: go with the why it's a bad picture. The shirt
- 55:12Speaker 2: is terrible. It's a terrible fishing shirt. I got it
- 55:15Speaker 2: at bass Pro Shops. I think I wore it on
- 55:17Speaker 2: that trip. And you know it's filled with clay gumbo mud.
- 55:23Speaker 2: My eyes are closed, which also makes it a bad picture.
- 55:28Speaker 2: On the On the good side, I love that hat.
- 55:30Speaker 2: It's a bass Pro Shops camo hat and a mossy
- 55:33Speaker 2: oak pattern of some sort.
- 55:34Speaker 1: Walking billboard and mast pro.
- 55:36Speaker 2: Yeah since sting up Cincinnati kid when that thing opened,
- 55:41Speaker 2: Oh you couldn't get me off. I two seventy five.
- 55:46Speaker 2: But that hat I wore for number of summers staining
- 55:49Speaker 2: decks for a company called pro Clean, and so it
- 55:52Speaker 2: is covered. I started. I never liked to bring the
- 55:55Speaker 2: rags when I start out, I get the roller in
- 55:57Speaker 2: the brush and never bring a wet rest. So I
- 55:58Speaker 2: started wiping my my deck stain with that hat. So
- 56:02Speaker 2: that hat ended up weighing like three pounds. It was
- 56:05Speaker 2: solid you could have taken a knife and it wouldn't
- 56:07Speaker 2: go through the fabric. It was just coated with layer
- 56:10Speaker 2: upon layer upon layer of deck stain.
- 56:12Speaker 1: Really nice and breatheable for a summer fishing.
- 56:14Speaker 2: Oh it was. It was incredible. It was incredible.
- 56:17Speaker 1: A helmet.
- 56:17Speaker 2: And then the final note I have on why this
- 56:19Speaker 2: picture is bad is I'm just really fat in it
- 56:23Speaker 2: and it's a bad angle for my cheeks and neck.
- 56:26Speaker 3: I can't tell it's the pocket in that shirt that
- 56:30Speaker 3: makes it look obviously.
- 56:31Speaker 2: Yeah, clearly. Probably it's probably a can of grizzly winter green.
- 56:35Speaker 2: And yeah, the eyes closed. Stupid haircut. I couldn't grow
- 56:39Speaker 2: a beard yet. I've been hiding. I've spent the rest
- 56:42Speaker 2: of my life hiding from that version of me.
- 56:45Speaker 3: Nice smally though.
- 56:46Speaker 2: Yeah, oh that's a great trip. Every island we hit
- 56:49Speaker 2: would would pull the boat over and get to the
- 56:51Speaker 2: tail of the island, just chuck like rattle traps and
- 56:54Speaker 2: stuff and hammered smallmouth and it's a great trip.
- 56:58Speaker 1: Randall's his favorite person, Nabuli is himself.
- 57:01Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean, what's life all about other than
- 57:05Speaker 2: doubting your own worth? Picture number two, Yes, this I
- 57:11Speaker 2: couldn't get this.
- 57:12Speaker 1: Isn't a bad picture at all.
- 57:15Speaker 2: Well, there's two things about it that make it bad.
- 57:17Speaker 2: One is that I'm making the same face as the fish,
- 57:22Speaker 2: and then two, my sweatshirt looks like the fish. Okay,
- 57:25Speaker 2: so I don't think there's nearly enough contrast in there.
- 57:28Speaker 2: But this also, that hat is a Carhart beanie. I
- 57:31Speaker 2: still own it today. I've probably owned it for almost
- 57:36Speaker 2: twenty years.
- 57:37Speaker 3: You're probably the reason Carhart hats are back in style.
- 57:40Speaker 2: No, well, probably not that things so stretched out. There's
- 57:44Speaker 2: not an ounce of elastic to it. Just pulled it
- 57:47Speaker 2: over this head so many times. But I do like
- 57:51Speaker 2: that photo. We were catching berbot on on jugs, on
- 57:57Speaker 2: fixed lines like limb lines and jugs, and got back
- 58:01Speaker 2: to the lodge and made ourselves a nice little Bourbot dinner,
- 58:04Speaker 2: I think the day before I flew out that summer.
- 58:06Speaker 6: I love.
- 58:06Speaker 3: That's a good one.
- 58:07Speaker 1: A lot of synergy going on there with it making
- 58:09Speaker 1: the same face as a fish, wearing the same pattern
- 58:12Speaker 1: as a fish.
- 58:13Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, so I don't know. I just had to
- 58:15Speaker 2: include it. Then the last one, Phil, if you'll, if
- 58:17Speaker 2: you'll indulge me here, Yeah, this is a good one.
- 58:20Speaker 2: Oh wow, ugly. That's a real ugly fish. That's a
- 58:24Speaker 2: spawned out male pink salmon. Big old dip in my
- 58:29Speaker 2: lips so that my head, my face is crooked to
- 58:32Speaker 2: the right side and then the hat is offset to
- 58:34Speaker 2: the left side there. That's probably two thousand and ten,
- 58:40Speaker 2: two and nine. We bought those mountain dew hats at
- 58:44Speaker 2: the Walmart in Wasilla, Alaska. One time. We're driving out
- 58:49Speaker 2: to go to the lodge, and before we got on
- 58:52Speaker 2: the boat, we stopped at Walmart and we all bought
- 58:54Speaker 2: matching mountain dew hats and warm for summer. So that
- 58:56Speaker 2: was also a hat part of my collection. But just yeah,
- 58:59Speaker 2: I'm I mean, the face is weird, the glasses are weird.
- 59:02Speaker 2: It's sort of that old style of glasses that was
- 59:04Speaker 2: more like a swim goggle. And then the hair poking
- 59:07Speaker 2: out the sides of the hat. It's just a bad
- 59:09Speaker 2: look all round.
- 59:10Speaker 1: I like that.
- 59:11Speaker 2: So plus it's a gross spawnd aut humpy.
- 59:15Speaker 1: That's a good picture. You supposed that on Instagram.
- 59:18Speaker 2: Rand Oh, I've got I showed Corey a little bit
- 59:22Speaker 2: of the archive. I've got some I've got some weird ones,
- 59:25Speaker 2: bad fishing pictures.
- 59:27Speaker 3: Probably really tough to pick the top.
- 59:29Speaker 4: Between Randall's drummis and Spencer's numbies. I'm having a really
- 59:32Speaker 4: hard times awards the.
- 59:38Speaker 2: Nice well that that concludes my top three top three
- 59:40Speaker 2: fishing hats I've owned, slash Top three worst pictures I've
- 59:44Speaker 2: taken with a fish pretty good.
- 59:47Speaker 3: Who's next, Randall.
- 59:48Speaker 4: Corey's next?
- 59:49Speaker 2: Oh?
- 59:49Speaker 3: Okay, well this is not going to be nearly as fun,
- 59:52Speaker 3: but I'm proud of these. This is my top three
- 59:55Speaker 3: favorite hunting camp meals that I enjoy making for a
- 59:58Speaker 3: group of buddies. If I'm going and solo, I'll eat
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: whatever freeze dried meals. But if I got a group
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: of buddies day four, day five into a hunt, I
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: like to make something big and scroucious, you know. Let's see.
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: So my number three, I hope I have this in
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: the right order, would be campfire nachos. Oh and this photo,
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: if you're watching, is some poled bear meat. I believe
- 1:00:22Speaker 3: it came off the rear shank of a black bear
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: I killed a couple of years ago. This cooked in
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: a Dutch oven. You just throw everything in, all your
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: nacho toppings, throw the lid on, put some coals on top.
- 1:00:35Speaker 5: Of it.
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: You could do it on the stovetop too, but it works.
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: It's a lot more fun over a fire. Let the
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: cheese melt, let the meat reheat, and then you can
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: go on top with your pickled halapanos, your salsas, your tomatoes,
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: what have you. Very easy, it's usually a crowd pleaser.
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: You just stick that in between your chairs and just go,
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: oh man, that is a good one.
- 1:00:55Speaker 1: Pretty photo. Martha Stewart would put that on our cover.
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: Well, that's why I took the picture.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: Okay, that was number three.
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: Number two.
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: I've copied Jean Paul Bourgeoise duck In and Dewey pasta
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: laya pasta yaya pastaalaya recipe, which you can find on
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: the mediater website. Actually I butchered the name, so sorry
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: Jean Paul, but I don't duck hunt, so I use
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: multiple different types of red meats in this one. I've
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: made it years in the past. If you're watching, here's
- 1:01:26Speaker 3: a photo of me whipping this up for Giannis and
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: another friend of our of ours Mic on an archery
- 1:01:32Speaker 3: l hunt a couple of years ago. It's very hearty,
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: extremely easy to make. I'm using the same Dutch oven
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: Actually it's a GSI aluminum Dutch oven that's just with
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: me anywhere I go. It's usually just in the back
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: of my truck. But it's got noodles, it's got multiple
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: types of meat and dewey sausage and whatever polled meat.
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: His recipe calls for duck. But again, I've done bear.
- 1:01:55Speaker 3: I think I've done mule deer, a polled meat variety.
- 1:01:59Speaker 3: You cook all that down with some mushrooms, some onions,
- 1:02:02Speaker 3: some garlic, and then you add a little bass of
- 1:02:05Speaker 3: some sort bowlyon cuban water if.
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: You have to. How does this picture?
- 1:02:10Speaker 3: So thank you for bringing that up, because after that meal,
- 1:02:14Speaker 3: this is the next day. I called this bowl in
- 1:02:17Speaker 3: for Yanni, whether he wants to admit it or not,
- 1:02:19Speaker 3: and he shot this thing at forty five yards.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: You fed him and you called in his bowl. That's
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: basically your elk Corey.
- 1:02:26Speaker 2: Ooh yeah, I.
- 1:02:27Speaker 3: Don't know about that, but this is that was a
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: memorable hunt, and we had some full bellies. That was
- 1:02:32Speaker 3: probably at seven PM, and I bet we were still
- 1:02:36Speaker 3: well fed and comfortable at that point the next day.
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: But I mean, make that pasta pasta laya. I should
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: have looked this up how you say it and look
- 1:02:43Speaker 3: what can happen to you?
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: Good vibes, Yeah, good vibes from that.
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: That was number two. Number one is walking tacos.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: Oh this is you take this phone?
- 1:02:53Speaker 3: No it is not my photo. Stole it off of
- 1:02:55Speaker 3: Google Images. Hopefully they're not watching. But I wish I
- 1:02:59Speaker 3: would have take this the photo because last weekend my
- 1:03:01Speaker 3: wife and I and our neighbor couple took out our
- 1:03:06Speaker 3: families on a camp float on the Yellowstone and this
- 1:03:09Speaker 3: was our meal that we made. It's so easy. We
- 1:03:11Speaker 3: actually heated up some ground elk burger and threw it
- 1:03:15Speaker 3: in with We had a plethora of choice chips for
- 1:03:18Speaker 3: the kids to choose from, and then we had all
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: the toppings laid out. So if you have picky eaters,
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: if you have you know, folks who don't want lettuce,
- 1:03:25Speaker 3: don't want a certain type of chips, whatever, you can
- 1:03:27Speaker 3: just make it on your own and it's your own
- 1:03:29Speaker 3: little bag of goodness. You just make sure you bring
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: a fork with you because it's very simple, takes up
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: some space.
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: Do you use the nacho cheesers or do you like
- 1:03:40Speaker 2: to vary your your base?
- 1:03:43Speaker 4: I like the cool ranch.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: Yeah, the whole blue bag.
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: I believe the original would be Fredo's, but yeah, you
- 1:03:50Speaker 3: can go wild. You got to go to the gas
- 1:03:53Speaker 3: stations to get the medium sized bagg of chip.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: That's not the hot was. I had a couple of
- 1:03:59Speaker 2: critiques of your list there, and one of the ones
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: was that the walking nachos wouldn't be good unless you
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: had a giant bag Jims.
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: The medium bag from the gas station.
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: Yeah, nobody in a group would be disappointed to see
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: Corey making walking taka. Yes, geez, good number one, thank you.
- 1:04:20Speaker 4: All right, it's my turn, I guess.
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: Yeah, let's do it. All right, this is a well
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: organized segment, and to turn my computer.
- 1:04:25Speaker 4: It's good. So my top three are the top three
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: video game characters that would taste good after a few
- 1:04:30Speaker 4: hours on the show, right, perfect, alright, So.
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: It's a beautiful, beautiful Oh.
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: So, first off, we have the rat King from the
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: Last of Us Part two. There are some pros and constanties.
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: I'm not going to say these would all be perfect,
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: but the pros of the For those who are listening
- 1:04:47Speaker 4: and don't know, the rat King is like a big,
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: kind of squishy zombie monster made up of a bunch
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: of different Cordyceps monsters that were you know, infected by
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: this brain virus that turned them all into crazy mushroom people,
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: and those came together to make this abomination. Pros would
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: feed a whole family for months, you know, basically like
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: carvesing a mouse, but probably more meat.
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: Yeah, look at all the shanks.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: It looks like there's a lot of bone in it too,
- 1:05:11Speaker 2: though with all of the limbs.
- 1:05:13Speaker 4: Uh yeah, I mean we would be diving into uncharted
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: territory here, we'd be doing a lot of you know,
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: experimenting exploration. I'm not sure.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: Let's see these kind.
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: Of like fat pop pockets, these pustules there, you know,
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: still a lot of food. Another pro already has a
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: nice char on it after dispatching it with a flamethrower,
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: So you're already just you're kind of halfway there. Sure,
- 1:05:35Speaker 4: con you may contract a Cordyceps brain infection, which you
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: know is not ideal, but you know, there are risks
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: with everything, so.
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: Maybe just smoke it to what one.
- 1:05:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I was gonna say, you just get that temp up,
- 1:05:47Speaker 2: you're probably you're probably fine.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: My familiarity with the rat King is Dennis Duffy telling
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: Liz Lemon on thirty Rock about the Rat King and
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: how it's all the rats in the subway system that
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: have fused together to create the Oh spooky.
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: This is kind of a deep cut. The next one
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: is going to be the Orphan of Costs from Blood Born.
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: As we all know, let's say it together. The Orphan
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: of Costs is the stillborn child of an elder god
- 1:06:13Speaker 4: that was worshiped by fishermen. Sorry, okay, now this one
- 1:06:18Speaker 4: might be confusing you if you're watching it home, because
- 1:06:20Speaker 4: you can see that the actual humanoid figure here is
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: doesn't look too appetizing, mostly skin and bones, but he
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: famously uses a placent his placenta, as his weapon. You
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: can see him holding it right here. Yes, I think
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: I would want to put that placenta on the smoke. Okay, yeah, pros.
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: So he is a stillborn child of an elders god
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: who knows what kind of sort of supernatural cosmic eldridge
- 1:06:44Speaker 4: powers You might inherit by consuming it's his placenta. But
- 1:06:48Speaker 4: you know, as we know from Yannis, the placenta is
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: filled with nutrients like iron and B twelve and also
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: is rumored not rumored, you know, it's it's there's I mean,
- 1:06:56Speaker 4: there's no evidence. We'll call it a rumor that it
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: helps the mother recover after when you consume the placenta,
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: cons you could be trapped in a nightmare plane of
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: existence from consuming the blood gods.
- 1:07:10Speaker 2: Totally different direction than I thought.
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: Number two, that's number two. Number one. Is Yoshi.
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: About to make the joke. I was about to make
- 1:07:19Speaker 2: this very joke. Phil. I'm glad you got us back there.
- 1:07:21Speaker 5: Yoshi.
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: Of course, the dinosaur mount from the Super Mario franchise
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: pros of eating Yoshi. He eats a clean diet of
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: sweet apples. That's the only thing he eats. You know,
- 1:07:31Speaker 4: I don't know how that would affect the meat, you know, tenderness, flavor, mouthfield.
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: But how about like how about animals that are fed
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: like a clean vegetarian diet, right, you know that's that's
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: probably what you.
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: A bear hunter like Corey would tell you that a
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: bear who's been eating berries is far superior to a
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: bear that's been eating dirty That's right.
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: I do wonder with all the goombas and the koopa
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: troopas that he eats and regurgitates, if that would mess
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: with anything.
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: Well, he's not actually processing, right. I wonder if that
- 1:07:59Speaker 4: kind of spits them. Sometimes they spit him out into
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: an egg. I don't know how that works.
- 1:08:03Speaker 2: Yeah, Phil, I thought you're gonna go with like Sonic
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: the Hedgehog, and.
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: Well, see there's some there's some cheats here, because there
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: are some there are some pokemon that just our food.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: Like there's a Pokemon that's just an apple pie with legs,
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: and I you know, that's kind of cheating. I'm not
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: gonna do.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: What's the name of the is it Blanca, the character
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: from Street Fighter?
- 1:08:22Speaker 5: Oh?
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: Yeah, the Big, the Big? Yeah.
- 1:08:24Speaker 1: What are the cons fill of eating Yoshan?
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: There are no con no cons. He's listening, he's you
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: don't have to listen to him, just to just jabber
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: on whatever.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: The This has been a delightful mashup.
- 1:08:37Speaker 4: Do have some honorable honorable mentions here, of course, the
- 1:08:40Speaker 4: metroid from Super Metro both Banjo and Kazoo, and the
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: raccoon Tom from Animal Cross. He's a he's a piece
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: of ship landlord who's always trying to squeeze you for
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: everything you're you're working for.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: And he's plump. He'd have some good cuts of meat.
- 1:08:55Speaker 4: One exactly, and you know Raccoon's Clay would be excited
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: to the cookout.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: You get awesome.
- 1:09:03Speaker 3: Good call.
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: Oh Phil, You're a real gem.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: That was perfect, Phil, You'd filled it up as much
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: as I was.
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: Qu Spencer. Here, you're last.
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: I'm last. Apologies in advance. I'm going to take this
- 1:09:15Speaker 1: very seriously. My list is the top three state game
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: agency logos. So once I pulled all fifty, then I
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: was like, why, I now have an obligation to myself
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: to do this right and make a critical judgment on
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: who has done this the best. Please pull them up, Phil,
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: all right.
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: All right?
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: Number three here is Alabama. Alabama's logo is just so authentic.
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: I'd say it's like the most authentic game agency logo.
- 1:09:42Speaker 1: It looks like it was designed in nineteen eighty nine
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: by a guy who hunts deer and owns a bass boat.
- 1:09:48Speaker 1: It looks vintage, like your dad would be part of
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: a hunting club that had this exact logo on a
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: hat that you would like fight your brother for in
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: the will. I would want to own a hat with
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: that patch on.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: It on a nylon windbreaker green wreak exactly.
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: Now, it's not even good design work like no professional
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: would produce this logo today, but that's also what makes
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: it so dang cool. I love it. I see this
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: logo and I'm like, Yep, that's Alabama. That's what they're
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: all about. White tails, largemouth mass and a patriotic bald eagle.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: So Alabama is my number three, specifically the Alabama Wildlife
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: and Freshwater Fisheries Division. That's my number three.
- 1:10:28Speaker 3: The eagle was well placed too. It looks like he's
- 1:10:30Speaker 3: just about to snag that bass.
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: That's right, all right.
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: Number two.
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: Number two is Alaska, the Alaska Fishing Game. Alaska's logo
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: is really aesthetically pleasing. The color scheme of baby blue
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: and turquoise, it's just super unique. It feels very Alaska
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: to me, and it has a lot going on while
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: still being balanced. You've got a salmon, You've got a caribou.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: There's a large bird that looks like it's either a
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: swan or a goose. So they've covered land, air, and water.
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: But to me, the real star of the show are
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: the actual stars. They have the Big Dipper and the
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: North Star and the logo, both of which are correctly
- 1:11:06Speaker 1: placed for how they appear in real life. And this
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: is also a nice nod to their flag, which is
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: just the big Dipper and the North Star. It's not
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: a coincidence that Alaska has one of the best state
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: flags and one of the best Game Agency logos. I
- 1:11:21Speaker 1: wish Montana's state flag was that coolte of just being
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: the seal.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: You know, it was created with a competition among school
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: children to design the new state flag.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: In Alaska, Yep, I did not know that. I love
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: that little wrinkle. Good for Alaska. Their logo, it's just perfect,
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: and their flag is awesome. If I lived in Alaska,
- 1:11:40Speaker 1: I would fly that flag everywhere. It would be a
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: core part of my personality. It'd be on my house,
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: it would be in my office. Good on Alaska. They
- 1:11:48Speaker 1: crushed it nicely done.
- 1:11:50Speaker 5: All right. Number one.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: If you've listened to trivia since the beginning, this will
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: be no surprise, But it is Missouri. I've made this
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: declaration before and I'll say it again. Missouri has the
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: best Game Agency logo in the country. I like that
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: it's the only state with a triangle logo. It's one
- 1:12:07Speaker 1: of two logos that has a raccoon, the other being Tennessee.
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: It's one of seven logos that has a bass, and
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: I would say that looks specifically like a small mouth,
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: in which case it would be one of two states
- 1:12:19Speaker 1: that has a small mouth, the other being Indiana. And
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: it's also the only logo with an oak leaf. I
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: just really appreciate that Missouri is giving a nod to
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: a raccoon and an oak tree. In fact, I think
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: would be stronger if they just got rid of that
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: bass in there, but I won't be too picky. And
- 1:12:35Speaker 1: similar to what I liked about Alaska in Alabama, it
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: just feels very authentic to Missouri. It works. It's the
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: perfect logo for that state. I mean, but a trying
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: argument a triangle really well, if every state had a
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: trying star trek it would be different. But them being
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: the state with a triangle logo, good on Missouri for
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: having something unique.
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: Gotcha. I won't, I won't, I won't, no complaint.
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: I have some honorable mention though, that we'll get to here. Vermont,
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife Vermont's logo. It
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: feels like a family crest that English royalty would have.
- 1:13:15Speaker 1: It's the oldest looking logo of all the state game
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: agency logos. It seems like it should be on a
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: suit of armor that a knight is wearing. I really
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: like what Vermont has going on there. Then there's the
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: Pennsylvania Game Commission. I love that it has what appears
- 1:13:31Speaker 1: to be a muskrat hut in it. I love that
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: it has their state flower, the Mountain Laurel. That's that's represented.
- 1:13:37Speaker 1: But what's really satisfying is that the whitetail buck there
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: is a two and a half year old eight pointer.
- 1:13:43Speaker 1: It's not an aspirational one hundred eighty inch booner made
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: for the cover of magazines. It's just a standard buck
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: that is barely graduated from being a basket rack. And
- 1:13:53Speaker 1: this is the type of deer that I just associate
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: with the big woods of that part of the country
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: that gets killed by a lot of folks. I really
- 1:14:00Speaker 1: like Pennsylvania's logo. And then the other honorable mention here
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: is the Delaware Division of Fish and Wildlife. Delaware's logo
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: is famously weird. It's a Canada goose and what I
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: believe is a weakfish, and their position in such a
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: way that it looks like the goose is carrying the weakfish.
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: I just like how absurd that logo is and it's
- 1:14:20Speaker 1: it's so bad that it's good now. Sadly, that logo
- 1:14:24Speaker 1: was replaced in twenty twenty one by a new logo
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: that's very sterile and forgettable. The new logo just looks
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: like it'd be for a city parks department. It sucks,
- 1:14:34Speaker 1: so Delaware went backwards with that logo.
- 1:14:38Speaker 2: It looks like an anti pollution initiative. It does. My
- 1:14:43Speaker 2: first reaction to the original one is that it looks
- 1:14:45Speaker 2: like they started with just the fish in there, and
- 1:14:48Speaker 2: they're like, shit, there's a lot of empty space and
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: we just chuck something in there, but don't change the
- 1:14:54Speaker 2: replacement or the size of the fish for God's sake, crucial.
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: Second thing, go over it.
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: It has a Canada goose carrying a weak fish, which
- 1:15:03Speaker 1: just tickles me. So those are the top game agency
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: logos Missouri, Alaska, Alabama.
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: That was fun, well done, well done. We should probably
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: do that again.
- 1:15:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I like that. I think the come up with
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: your own category is a real winners, real winning segment
- 1:15:19Speaker 2: if you will. Well, Phil, it's time we dive back
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: into that strange, strange world that is the chat.
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: Let's see what folks we've come to that part of this.
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: Sure folks have had to say about this madness.
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: Get some more questions in. We only have a couple
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: right now, and I will read one of them now.
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: Jackson says Randall. If you could bring back a historical
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: figure to life and go on a backwoods hunting trip
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: with them, who would it be and what would you
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: hunt for?
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: A cool question?
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: Hmm, this might take some thought. Here for a second,
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: you can talk through it.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: I'll answer a different version of this question. A person
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: who's not dead that I'd like to fish with. Jeremy Wade.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: I love Jeremy Wade. I just respect everything about his
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: show and how he fishes. I watched every episode when
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: I was a kid, all the way through college. A
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: big fan of Jermy Wade. But Randall's bringing someone back
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: from the dead and hunting with.
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: I'm struggling here. I'm really struggling too many people. Yeah, well,
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: I mean, like the obvious one's t R. But then
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: I'm like, h, I don't know. Is he a nice guys?
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: What's it like sharing a camp with him? He's a
- 1:16:30Speaker 2: large man. Wouldn't share a tent? You need a lot
- 1:16:35Speaker 2: of bags, chips, boy, I mean, I feel like I've
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: lost all my momentum with this question. Jackson thinking about this.
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: Let's go for one second and.
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: Come back to it. Uh, you know, just to make
- 1:16:51Speaker 4: the people upstairs happy.
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: It's embarrassing for live.
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: One piece of First Light Year. What would it be
- 1:17:01Speaker 4: if you could only have one?
- 1:17:03Speaker 2: WHOA, but we can have like the other clothes on,
- 1:17:07Speaker 2: stuff that we'd wear, Like.
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, okay, I'd go.
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: I know what it is. It's the the Chamberlain jacket.
- 1:17:17Speaker 2: It's like it's like a sleeping bag. Don't own another
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: jacket that's that warm and for hunting big game in
- 1:17:26Speaker 2: the West and just glassing somewhere in the wind or
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: sitting on a mountaintop when it's early November. Chamberlain jacket
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: goes with me everywhere.
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm still in summer mode, so I'm thinking about
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: my favorite things from First Light in summer. Number one
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: I've worn it all spring and all summer is the
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: flash Storm jacket. That is their lightweight raincoat. It's six
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: point five ounces. It performs really well in rain. It's
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: also light enough that I'll throw it on if the
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: bugs are bad, if I need to keep mosquitoes off
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: of me. I am a huge fan of that, that
- 1:18:01Speaker 1: flash storm, and it's it's cheap as far as raincoats go.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: It's listed at one hundred and eighty five right now.
- 1:18:07Speaker 1: If I had one hundred and eighty five dollars to
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: spend it first light, that's what I would spend it on.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: That's like going to be my go to raincoat for
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: a long, long time.
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: Big fan. Hm gosh.
- 1:18:18Speaker 3: I don't know if anybody's in this room has tried
- 1:18:20Speaker 3: our new socks, but they're pretty bomber. Gotta have a
- 1:18:24Speaker 3: good pair of socks. Our midweight Marino sock over the calf,
- 1:18:29Speaker 3: so there's no.
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: Sim pair of socks is mission critical.
- 1:18:32Speaker 3: Yeah, we have great jackets, great pants, great underwear.
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: You're taking this too far.
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: I'm wearing their underwear right now. Wash out.
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: What do we got, Phil?
- 1:18:42Speaker 4: I don't remember. I'm just trying to avoid the dumb
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: questions for me, So I don't remember if you guys
- 1:18:46Speaker 4: specifically have talked about this, but for the media to crew,
- 1:18:49Speaker 4: what hunts do you have planned for the fall? Some
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: of you might have shared. I think I've asked this before,
- 1:18:52Speaker 4: but I think Brody was there might have been somebody else.
- 1:18:54Speaker 2: But I've got standard Montana generals, I've got a Montana
- 1:19:03Speaker 2: prong horn tag, and I've got to do a mule
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: deer hunt in Idaho and that should keep me busy.
- 1:19:12Speaker 2: He's gonna be a busy little uh mid October November
- 1:19:16Speaker 2: stretch there.
- 1:19:16Speaker 3: Congrats on the prong horn tag. Those are hard to
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: come by these days.
- 1:19:20Speaker 2: Well, we struck out last year, so the Williams family.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: I feel like we weren't old, but I feel like
- 1:19:28Speaker 2: it was. I spent a lot of time thinking about
- 1:19:31Speaker 2: the next prong horn tag here.
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: You know it worked.
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: I haven't drawn pronghorn three years in a row. Now
- 1:19:37Speaker 3: they don't give them to Montana natives anymore.
- 1:19:39Speaker 2: Yeah, like why would they?
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: I just have general deer in general elk Oh, and
- 1:19:43Speaker 3: I do have an extra cow tag this year. So
- 1:19:45Speaker 3: all goes well, it'll be an overflowing freezer by Thanksgiving.
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: That's exciting. Now, Spencer's got a lot I have.
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: I have deer tags in five states, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska,
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: and Illinois.
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: So my first deer hunt will be early October in
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: Idaho and my last dear hunt will be early to
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: mid December in Illinois with my other three states between there.
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: Very excited.
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: Mm hmm, Phil, without you know, giving away any episodes
- 1:20:19Speaker 4: of media or trivia that might have been filmed already,
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: Lance says, as a randomal I need to know what's
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: up with the trivia slump, Lance Williams.
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: Well, Lance, there's a there's a short answer, there's a
- 1:20:34Speaker 2: longer answer. The short answer would be everybody's got a
- 1:20:37Speaker 2: bad day or two here or there, and sometimes they
- 1:20:39Speaker 2: string together five six weeks in a row. Uh huh.
- 1:20:42Speaker 2: The longer answer is that the past like month and
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: a half, we've been working to finish up the next audiobook,
- 1:20:51Speaker 2: and my entire faculties mental, physical, have all been depleted significantly.
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: So rest assured. The old Doctor's back on his horse.
- 1:21:02Speaker 2: So stay tuned. Now that that project's wrapped up, I
- 1:21:06Speaker 2: think we're gonna get back in the swing of thing. Okay,
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: Randall was injured and now he's at full health.
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: Well not quite full health, thirty nine years old and
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: sliding to the grave maybe head first. But you know,
- 1:21:20Speaker 2: we're doing what we were doing a couple months ago.
- 1:21:23Speaker 4: He's back, are you guys, archery?
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: Guys in here Nope, not at all.
- 1:21:29Speaker 4: There's a question a while ago. It's pretty basically. It's
- 1:21:31Speaker 4: basically like single pin versus them, multipin, multipin if you
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: have a preference, Because they were saying that adjusting pins
- 1:21:40Speaker 4: maybe when you're drawn or trying not to distract or
- 1:21:44Speaker 4: anything like that, is would that be a problem. Is
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: that a problem for you?
- 1:21:47Speaker 3: Well, I've used them both for sure, and single pin
- 1:21:50Speaker 3: just gets you into trouble more. Taking that extra second
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: to have to move your hand up to your site
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: to dial in to adjust that one single pin can
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: be that half second that you needed to be a
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: little faster. So I have four pins that I don't
- 1:22:05Speaker 3: adjust at all, Just aim and shoot beautiful, Gotta be quick.
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: There's also hybrids. If you weren't torn, you could get
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: a three pin where your top one is the floater
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: that you dial with and your other two are fixed
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: until you have fixed yardages out to say twenty thirty forty,
- 1:22:21Speaker 1: and if you have to go beyond that, then that's
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: when you would dial YEP to each their own on
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: that one.
- 1:22:27Speaker 4: We can wrap it up there. But just for I
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: didn't mean to say the dumb questions people ask me,
- 1:22:31Speaker 4: like the questions are dumb. Oh, I just I it
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: makes me uncomfortable to address that. You don't want to
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: talk about Demon Escape.
- 1:22:38Speaker 2: Demon still Birth again.
- 1:22:40Speaker 4: I would talk about that all day if I had
- 1:22:42Speaker 4: the opportunity, but I don't think I do. But just
- 1:22:44Speaker 4: to fire them off, Leland, I see you, I hear you.
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: The Red Dead redeentrance stream is still TVD. It is happening.
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: When am I going to play Dungeons and Dragons with
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: the people here. I will force multiple people in this
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: room to play D and D with me soon.
- 1:22:59Speaker 2: I've been asking you to do that.
- 1:23:01Speaker 4: You're You're gonna have no choice.
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: Yeah, the tables have turned from Phil requesting us to
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: play to us requesting him to host the game. It's
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: gonna happen.
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: Yeah, and we we will find just as a as
- 1:23:13Speaker 4: a sneak peak of something you may never see, We're
- 1:23:15Speaker 4: gonna find out once and for all what happened to
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: Steve's fish. I'll just I'll leave it at that. Very
- 1:23:19Speaker 4: good and that's pretty much it. If you guys, I mean,
- 1:23:24Speaker 4: this is this is a good show, a hefty show man.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: I feel like we could have sort of had a
- 1:23:28Speaker 2: thin lineup but we we really squeezed all the juice
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: out of each segment and it was a rich text
- 1:23:36Speaker 2: that I'm sure we'll go down in this podcast history.
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: Yep, that was a great show.
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: Well, gang, thanks for joining always, Pleasure and Phil, thank you,
- 1:23:46Speaker 2: Corey Spencer, thank you, and we'll see you next week.
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: Fine now
