Latest / The Slippery Slope / The False Narrative Surrounding Israel, with Patrick Russell
Transcript
- 0:36Hello everybody. My name is Patrick Russell.
- 0:38I'm the Australian director for a ministry called Christian
- 0:41Friends of Israel. Today I'd like to talk to you
- 0:44about a very pertinent subject. It's one that's in the news
- 0:48almost daily, and it is concerning the nation of Israel
- 0:52and a false narrative that is being spread and believed in the
- 0:57world today concerning the nation of Israel, its existence,
- 1:01its legitimacy. And I just want to address this
- 1:05issue from a biblical point of view.
- 1:08And to do that, I want to ask you a question.
- 1:10You may think it's a strange question, but you'll see the
- 1:13point I'm trying to make. And the question is this.
- 1:17If I was to ask you, were there Kangaroos in the Middle East?
- 1:21How would you answer that question?
- 1:24You'd either go and do your research and find out if there's
- 1:27any populations of Kangaroos in the Middle East today, whether
- 1:31there's any fossil record concerning populations of
- 1:36Kangaroos in the Middle East. Some people might automatically
- 1:39just say, look, Kangaroos belong in Australia.
- 1:41Australia is an island nation surrounded by thousands of
- 1:44kilometres of ocean and Kangaroos are only native here
- 1:48and not found anywhere else in the world.
- 1:51Well, The funny thing is, well, not The funny thing, but the
- 1:54true thing is I can actually answer that question from the
- 1:57Bible. You see, as a Bible believing
- 2:00Christian, I believe in the story of Noah's ark.
- 2:04And on Noah's Ark, we're told that God brought all the animals
- 2:08to Noah, two by two, brought them to the ark, brought them
- 2:11onto the ark. The ark was closed, the earth
- 2:15was inundated with a flood and all life, all air breathing life
- 2:20was destroyed during that flood. Now, for many, many days the the
- 2:25ark was floating on the waters until the waters actually
- 2:28subsided and went down. And the Bible tells us that the
- 2:32ark came to rest on a mountain range called Ararat.
- 2:36Now Ararat is in the Middle East today.
- 2:38It's in southern Turkey. So to answer that question, were
- 2:42there Kangaroos in the Middle East?
- 2:44Well, yes, at some stage, if we believe the biblical account of
- 2:48Noah's ark, because the animals, all the animals, including the
- 2:51Kangaroos, were on that ark. And so when the ark came to rest
- 2:54and the door was open and the animals exited the ark, of
- 2:57course the Kangaroos exited the ark.
- 3:00So at least at one stage there were Kangaroos in the Middle
- 3:05East. Now you see how I answered that
- 3:08question. It wasn't, it wasn't, you know,
- 3:10some brilliant deduction. It was just a simple faith
- 3:15understanding of God's Word and, and the story concerning Noah's
- 3:20ark. So having said that, I, I say
- 3:23that to say this, that when we start to understand something as
- 3:28Christians, we need to start with God's word.
- 3:31Because if we don't start with God's word, we could go off on
- 3:34all sorts of tangents. You know, I could, I could just
- 3:37say, look, no, there were no Kangaroos in the Middle East.
- 3:40You know, science tells us that there's only a population in
- 3:43Australia and there's no native habitats for Kangaroos in the
- 3:47Middle East. As I said, Australia is an
- 3:49island nation surrounded by thousands of kilometres of
- 3:52water. No, there were no Kangaroos in
- 3:54the Middle East. Now, that's how I could base my
- 3:56understanding of that question, but I chose to go back to God's
- 4:00Word and a simple understanding of the story of Noah's Ark tells
- 4:04me that at least some, at some stage, there were Kangaroos in
- 4:07the Middle East. So ask that question, and I've
- 4:11just built my understanding based on God's Word.
- 4:15Now, when it comes to Israel, we've got to do the same thing
- 4:19because if we don't, we're going to believe what the world is
- 4:23saying. We're going to believe what the
- 4:24United Nations is saying. We're going to believe what the
- 4:26presidents and prime ministers of nations are saying.
- 4:29We're going to believe what the Arabs are saying.
- 4:31We're going to believe all sorts of false narratives when it
- 4:34comes to the nation of Israel. So to get a clear understanding
- 4:38as Christians of who Israel are, we need to again go back to
- 4:43God's Word. Remember, we're building our
- 4:45understanding based on God's revelation.
- 4:48And when we do that, we find out that Israel is a nation that was
- 4:53formed by God. God called a man by the name of
- 4:56Abraham to leave his his home in ur of the Chaldees, which is our
- 5:00modern southern Iraq, and to go to a land God said that I would
- 5:04show you. And God brought him to the land
- 5:06of Canaan, and which we call Israel today.
- 5:09And the reason we call it Israel is because God said to Abraham,
- 5:13I'm going to give this land to you and your descendants as an
- 5:16everlasting position. Now Abraham had one son called
- 5:19Ishmael, but then he had another son called Isaac.
- 5:22And God says, I'm not going to fulfil this word through
- 5:26Ishmael. I'm going to fulfil it through
- 5:28Isaac. So he made the same promise to
- 5:30Isaac that he made to his father Abraham.
- 5:33And we can find this in Genesis chapter 17, the original promise
- 5:37to Abraham. And then Genesis chapter 26,
- 5:39verses three to five, God makes the promise this time to Isaac.
- 5:44And then he says to Isaac, to you and your descendants, I'm
- 5:47going to give this land as an everlasting possession.
- 5:49Now we know that Isaac and his wife Rebecca had two sons.
- 5:52They were twins. One was called Esau and the
- 5:55other was called Jacob. But God was very specific when
- 5:58he said, no, I'm not going to bless Esau in this respect.
- 6:01I'm going to make the promise to Jacob and Jacob.
- 6:05He changed his name to Israel, and Israel had twelve sons who
- 6:09became the 12 tribes of Israel. So biblically, biblically, God
- 6:15said he's going to give this land to Abraham through Isaac,
- 6:20through Jacob, who was the father of Israel and his twelve
- 6:24sons who became the 12 tribes of Israel.
- 6:26So from Scripture we've established in God's Word that
- 6:31the land that we called Israel today belongs to the Jewish
- 6:34people, not the Arabic people. He didn't give it to Ishmael and
- 6:38his descents. He didn't give it to Esau and
- 6:40his descendants. He gave it to Abraham, Isaac,
- 6:43and Jacob. So we've established biblically
- 6:46that God made this covenant with Abraham and his descendants.
- 6:50And by the way, it was an everlasting covenant.
- 6:52It wasn't based on Israel's faithfulness.
- 6:55God made the promise with himself that he would give this
- 6:58land as an everlasting possession.
- 7:00And that's why God still loves Israel today, not because
- 7:02they're perfect, not because they do everything that God
- 7:05wants them to do, but simply because of the promise that he
- 7:07made to their fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
- 7:12Now, there's a big dispute in the world today, as I said, and
- 7:15the world believes that that land doesn't belong to the
- 7:17Jewish people. It believes, much of the world
- 7:20believes, that it actually belongs to a people called the
- 7:23Palestinians. But who are the Palestinians?
- 7:26Who are they? Were they the native people of
- 7:27the land? Well, no, they weren't.
- 7:30A very telling quote, and I'll read it to you, comes from one
- 7:35of the leaders of the Palestinian Liberation
- 7:38Organisation, and he made this quote back in 1977.
- 7:44His name was Zahir Mussin and he was a PLO executive committee
- 7:50member in 1977 along with Yasser Arafat as they formed the PLO.
- 7:55And this is what he said quoting he said the Palestinian people
- 8:00does not exist. The creation of a Palestinian
- 8:03state is only a means for continuing our struggle against
- 8:08the state of Israel, for our Arab unity.
- 8:11In reality today, there is no difference between Jordanians,
- 8:15Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese.
- 8:18Now, this is one of the leaders of the PLO who who first had
- 8:22this notion and this idea of the Palestinian people, he said they
- 8:25don't even exist. Now that comes straight from his
- 8:28mouth. So they understood that the
- 8:32creation of Palestine was simply a political tool for the Arab
- 8:36nations to get leverage in the United Nations to get land for
- 8:40Arab unity. So, you know, when we hear all
- 8:43these things in the news today about the Palestinian people
- 8:46being kicked out of their land, well, it never was their land.
- 8:50We know from the Scriptures that it was given to Abraham, Isaac
- 8:53and Jacob, the fathers of the Jewish people, as an everlasting
- 8:58possession. So you can either believe the
- 9:00United Nations, you can either believe the Arab people who call
- 9:04themselves Palestinians, who their own leader said doesn't
- 9:07even exist. They're from the neighbouring
- 9:09Arab nations around, or you can believe what God says.
- 9:13And as Christians, I think the choice is very simple.
- 9:16I know what I believe. I know what God has said, and
- 9:19that forms my opinion. So people can argue with me
- 9:22politically, and everybody's got an opinion.
- 9:25So I don't argue politically. I just simply believe what God
- 9:29has said in his Word. And I base everything I
- 9:32understand from God's word. And I think that's a safe
- 9:35position to be in. So when you hear all this banter
- 9:38in the news and all this, you know, free, free Palestine from
- 9:42the river to the sea, you know that that's a false narrative.
- 9:46That is a false political narrative.
- 9:49That land belongs to the Jewish people according to God's word.
- 9:52And that's good enough for me. So I hope this little Bible
- 9:58exegesis, if you like, is has been helpful to help you think.
- 10:03Don't just accept what you hear. Have a look at history.
- 10:06You'll you'll find out that it's always been a Jewish state.
- 10:09You can have a look. In 1917, when the Australian
- 10:14Light Horse liberated their sheba, who did they liberate it
- 10:18from? Did they liberate it from the
- 10:19Palestinians? No, they liberated it from the
- 10:22Ottoman Turkish Empire, who had been there 400 years previous.
- 10:27Now the Turks, they're not Arabs.
- 10:30There was no such thing as a Palestinian state when the
- 10:32Australian soldiers liberated it in 1917, it was run by the
- 10:37Ottoman Turkish Empire and they'd had it from 400 years
- 10:40previous. And you go back in history and
- 10:42you'll find out that the Egyptians had it at the time of
- 10:47Jesus, the Romans were ruling it.
- 10:49There was no such thing as Palestine.
- 10:51The name Palestine is actually a Roman name given by the General
- 10:54Hadrian in the year 135 AD. And it wasn't just that piece of
- 10:59land. It was the whole area of Syria
- 11:01and Lebanon and Israel and parts of Egypt, what we call the
- 11:05Levant today. So it wasn't even a name given
- 11:08to the state that we call Israel.
- 11:10It was a name given to a whole region and he called it Syria,
- 11:14Palestina. So folks, have a look at what
- 11:17history says. Go back and have a look what
- 11:19history says, But more importantly, what does God's
- 11:22word say? And that's what I want to focus
- 11:24on today. What has God said concerning
- 11:27this whole situation, which is a a great problem that the world
- 11:32is facing today. So thank you for listening.
- 11:34God bless you and I'll see you again next time.
- 11:37Thank you.
