Transcript
- 0:00DANI: How was the homecoming game?
- 0:02KARA: I barely watched the football game, but I did see some
- 0:05friends who are at Gallaudet now for the interpreting program.
- 0:09DANI: Cool.
- 0:09KARA: So we hung out.
- 0:11There's a bunch of booths there, so you can go, like, buy things.
- 0:14DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 0:14KARA: And we walked around, and then-
- 0:17DANI: What's the Gallaudet mascot?
- 0:18KARA: The Bison.
- 0:19DANI: Is it cute?
- 0:20KARA: He's cute.
- 0:21He also signs.
- 0:22He has, like, little gloves and he signs.
- 0:24DANI: Aw.
- 0:25KARA: Yeah, I enjoyed that.
- 0:27And then-
- 0:28DANI: Ca- Hmm.
- 0:29KARA: What?
- 0:29DANI: You would think maybe it would be something with opposable thumbs.
- 0:33KARA: Like what?
- 0:35DANI: Monkey.
- 0:35KARA: The Gallaudet Monkeys.
- 0:37Are bison native to DC?
- 0:39Not to my knowledge.
- 0:41DANI: It is kind of a common mascot.
- 0:43KARA: Bison?
- 0:43DANI: Yeah.
- 0:44KARA: Oh, maybe.
- 0:45Yeah, I guess.
- 0:46DANI: Or like, I guess I'm thinking of Buffalo, and I… There's a difference?
- 0:50KARA: Oh, God, I don't think there is.
- 0:53DANI: Gun to my head, the gun would go off.
- 0:54I don't know.
- 0:55I don't know.
- 0:56I'm so sorry.
- 0:57KARA: You and I are so coastal elite, it's crazy.
- 1:00DANI: But I, I think about mascots a lot because as a surface level bandwagon
- 1:04fan, if there is a mascot, I'm more inclined to be involved with it.
- 1:09KARA: Did your high school have a mascot?
- 1:11DANI: We were the Panthers.
- 1:13KARA: Okay, good.
- 1:13DANI: Which is like pretty basic, but like solid.
- 1:15But our colors were kinda ugly.
- 1:17KARA: What were they?
- 1:18DANI: Well, they were purple and black, but it was like not a good purple.
- 1:22KARA: Oh.
- 1:22Mine was the Colts, like the horses.
- 1:25DANI: That's really good, I think.
- 1:26KARA: That's good.
- 1:26I enjoyed it.
- 1:27DANI: I feel like there's a lot of stuff there.
- 1:29KARA: Yeah.
- 1:30I love a horse.
- 1:31Ours were, our colors were like red and white mostly.
- 1:34Mm. Which is fine.
- 1:35What else did I do at Gallaudet?
- 1:37I also saw the campus, which is pretty cool.
- 1:40It's true what they say about the hallways being really big, and
- 1:44the buildings are very accessible.
- 1:46And all the doors have little windows that you can poke through
- 1:49so you don't have to knock.
- 1:51DANI: That's really nice.
- 1:52KARA: I went to the pep rally also, and it was cool to see the chants 'cause
- 1:55it's not a typical rah rah chant.
- 1:57It's usually a drum and then the people signing along with the drum.
- 2:02And it's usually like, "Go Bisons, fight, win," whatever, but-
- 2:06DANI: Sure.
- 2:07Classic.
- 2:07KARA: It's like to the tune of the drums.
- 2:08DANI: Yeah.
- 2:09KARA: So yeah, it was just cool to see all the differences.
- 2:12I don't know.
- 2:12I never went to any sports games in my college, so I do feel really old-
- 2:17DANI: Totally…
- 2:18KARA: watching these 19-year-olds dance and cheer for this, uh, team.
- 2:22And I was like, wow, I haven't been to a pep rally since I was in high school.
- 2:25DANI: Aw.
- 2:26I was also made to feel old this weekend.
- 2:28At my party that you missed 'cause you were at Gallaudet.
- 2:31KARA: 'Cause I was at Gallaudet.
- 2:32Also, another thing I noticed with Gallaudet is that it's so small.
- 2:36DANI: Mm.
- 2:37KARA: And then you-
- 2:37DANI: How many students, do you know?
- 2:38KARA: Only 1,000 total.
- 2:40DANI: Oh, wow.
- 2:41KARA: Undergrad and grad.
- 2:42DANI: Whoa.
- 2:43KARA: It's tiny.
- 2:44DANI: That is small.
- 2:45KARA: Tiny.
- 2:45So I think like all of us fit, fit in the gym.
- 2:48And I was reading about how the enrollment has been declining steadily.
- 2:53I think it's dropped by like 30% since 2009.
- 2:56DANI: Oh, interesting.
- 2:57KARA: Yeah.
- 2:57And that goes across like all Deaf schools, but especially Gallaudet.
- 3:01There's a few reasons.
- 3:02One is the passing of the ADA in the '90s-
- 3:04DANI: Mm.
- 3:05KARA: Where disabled people are now entitled to a good
- 3:08education in the public schools.
- 3:10DANI: Yes.
- 3:10KARA: And they have to provide an interpreter or some sort of access.
- 3:13Cochlear implants, and also vaccinations, because a lot of the older Deaf people
- 3:18became deaf as children from childhood diseases like meningitis and rubella.
- 3:23So that's one reason, and then also rising tuition and things like that.
- 3:26So I think that's just why Gallaudet hasn't been doing so well.
- 3:30And you can kinda feel it.
- 3:32Also, a lot of the programs have been shut down in recent years.
- 3:35Math, history, art, media and design were shut down, and this year they
- 3:41just, this week they just announced that they're closing the psychology program.
- 3:45DANI: Genuinely, what is left?
- 3:47KARA: ASL.
- 3:48Interpreting.
- 3:49DANI: Wait, so then it's like Deaf people aren't gonna go.
- 3:52KARA: Right.
- 3:53It's so sad, because
- 3:55DANI: I- Wait, that's, that is l- so relevant to this episode.
- 3:59That's crazy.
- 3:59KARA: I know.
- 4:00That's why I was thinking about it, 'cause Gallaudet originally was meant
- 4:04to be for any Deaf person to go.
- 4:07You take any class in ASL, and you can do anything that you want, and
- 4:11you can take math, you can do history.
- 4:13DANI: Yeah.
- 4:13KARA: But the classes are just gonna be in ASL.
- 4:15And now that's not the case.
- 4:17It's more education-focused.
- 4:20I think most graduates end up working in education or social services.
- 4:23DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 4:24KARA: Which is why closing the psychology program is crazy to me.
- 4:27But most work in education, or they do ASL interpreting, or they do audiology or SLP.
- 4:33So it just feels very, feels like Gallaudet's just becoming more,
- 4:38I don't know, what's the word?
- 4:39Like, Deaf-focused, I guess, rather than academic-focused.
- 4:43DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 4:43KARA: I don't know.
- 4:44And I can kinda feel that, just from the lack of people there.
- 4:47DANI: Right, from the lack of people, and then I imagine there's more hearing people
- 4:52there, if one of the main programs still standing is the interpretation program?
- 4:58KARA: To my knowledge, the, most of the undergrads are Deaf.
- 5:02DANI: Okay.
- 5:02KARA: But then a lot of the-
- 5:04DANI: Graduate.
- 5:05KARA: Grad students are hearing, 'cause they come in mainly to
- 5:09become an interpreter or to become an SLP or an audiologist.
- 5:12DANI: Yeah.
- 5:13KARA: And by going to Gallaudet, you are gonna get some, some
- 5:16exposure, but you also don't have to.
- 5:18You can just go to class and go home.
- 5:20DANI: Right.
- 5:20KARA: Yeah.
- 5:21But, um, my friends going there are all studying to be interpreters or have become
- 5:26interpreters through the program, and you, you can kind of make of it what you will.
- 5:30So I don't know.
- 5:31It was just interesting.
- 5:32Should we do the episode?
- 5:34DANI: Yeah, we should get to the episode, 'cause we have
- 5:36to meet your wife for dinner.
- 5:37KARA: We do.
- 5:38And I don't wanna leave her waiting.
- 5:53Episode three, Duel Between Two Women, aired January 21st, 2013.
- 5:58It's called that because Natalie and Bay are fighting.
- 6:01That's kind of it.
- 6:01DANI: You don't really have to think too hard on that one, do you?
- 6:04KARA: No, you really don't.
- 6:05It's a 1636 painting if you wanna look it up by-
- 6:08DANI: Is it cool?
- 6:09KARA: It is.
- 6:09It's two women fighting.
- 6:10DANI: Oh.
- 6:11KARA: They're like gladiators.
- 6:12DANI: Ooh, love that.
- 6:13KARA: Yeah, I liked it.
- 6:14DANI: Okay.
- 6:15KARA: By Jusepe de Ribera.
- 6:17DANI: Oh.
- 6:17Man.
- 6:19KARA: Oh, man.
- 6:20I think that the context is they are fighting over a man.
- 6:24DANI: Oh.
- 6:25KARA: I know.
- 6:25DANI: I'm less interested.
- 6:26KARA: I know, me too.
- 6:27DANI: I started laughing so hard.
- 6:29The, the opening shot of Bay in this episode, 'cause at one point I didn't
- 6:33text you back and you sent me a screenshot of Bay standing in front of
- 6:37her locker that says, "Hearie Bitch."
- 6:39KARA: It starts off at Carlton, and Bay's at school with Emmett, and she is
- 6:43continuing to simcom in this Deaf school.
- 6:45DANI: Yeah.
- 6:46KARA: She is… She pisses me off this whole episode.
- 6:48DANI: She's gonna do it forever.
- 6:50KARA: She's simcomming about The Scarlet Letter.
- 6:51She said, "Well, I looked up the words that are relevant to The Scarlet
- 6:55Letter, like hypocrite, so that's good.
- 6:58I'm catching up, and I didn't slow down the class once, so yay me."
- 7:02And then she goes to her locker, and she sees, "Hearie Bitch" written
- 7:06in Sharpie on her blue locker.
- 7:09It's kind of funny.
- 7:09DANI: It's a, it's a beautiful still.
- 7:11I don't wanna advocate for bullying, but it's pretty funny.
- 7:14KARA: It's kinda funny.
- 7:15And then she grabs a Sharpie and then starts coloring over it.
- 7:19DANI: I would leave it.
- 7:20I get confused when th- every time this happens in, like, teen media
- 7:25where someone, like, writes something mean on their locker and then they're,
- 7:28like, embarrassed and they're like, "I gotta cover this up." It's like,
- 7:31it's not like people are gonna think you wrote that on your own locker.
- 7:34KARA: No.
- 7:35And also-
- 7:36DANI: Also-
- 7:36… KARA: 'Cause Melody comes up later and is like-
- 7:38DANI: Yeah…
- 7:38KARA: "Why are you defacing property?"
- 7:39DANI: Like, immediately.
- 7:40It, it makes Bay look so bad, and she doesn't even say the context.
- 7:44Melody knows you better than that.
- 7:46It's not, like, a random teacher.
- 7:47Melody's gonna give you the benefit of the doubt.
- 7:49Although-
- 7:50KARA: She will.
- 7:50DANI: Bay does have some reasonable Melody trauma, and I do get that.
- 7:53KARA: That's fair.
- 7:54DANI: So, still.
- 7:55KARA: I think she just doesn't wanna stir any drama.
- 7:57She's just… But she is.
- 7:59DANI: It's The Scarlet Letter.
- 8:01Leave it for all to see.
- 8:02KARA: Exactly.
- 8:03That's the A.
- 8:04DANI: Yeah, that's her A.
- 8:06KARA: Hearie Bitch's A. We meet a new character in this scene also.
- 8:09This is the first time we meet him, right?
- 8:11DANI: Yes.
- 8:11Okay, so I have to apologize, 'cause I was like, "Teo."
- 8:14KARA: You got him confused with Noah?
- 8:15DANI: Yeah.
- 8:15And I think Teo's gone, by the way.
- 8:17KARA: Oh, bye, Teo.
- 8:18DANI: I don't, I don't think they bring him back.
- 8:19Like, I think they just swap him in with Noah and think we won't remember.
- 8:23I don't know.
- 8:24And you know what?
- 8:24It worked, 'cause I was fully, like, combining them in my brain.
- 8:28But I forgot I love Noah.
- 8:30KARA: Me too.
- 8:31DANI: He's so… He's got those, like, expressive eyes.
- 8:35He's r- I don't, I was really compelled by him this whole episode.
- 8:38KARA: Me too.
- 8:38Me too.
- 8:39DANI: Especially 'cause he's not being an asshole.
- 8:41KARA: He's not.
- 8:41DANI: He's not good, but he's trying.
- 8:44KARA: He r- he is trying.
- 8:45He has good intentions the whole episode.
- 8:47DANI: And he's working through some shit.
- 8:49So I respect his struggle.
- 8:51KARA: Yeah.
- 8:52He's played by Max Lloyd-Jones, and when he came on screen,
- 8:55my wife said, "Oh, he's cute."
- 8:57DANI: Yeah.
- 8:57KARA: And that's really something.
- 8:59DANI: It is something.
- 9:00And I don't like blonde men, so.
- 9:02KARA: Yeah.
- 9:02Exactly.
- 9:03He's really glowed up too.
- 9:04I looked up a re- a recent picture of him.
- 9:06He looks really good.
- 9:07DANI: What is he doing now?
- 9:08KARA: I have no idea.
- 9:09DANI: Anything?
- 9:10Okay.
- 9:10We'll keep-
- 9:11KARA: He's British.
- 9:12DANI: What?
- 9:12KARA: Yeah.
- 9:13DANI: Oh my God, it just keeps getting better and better.
- 9:15Wow.
- 9:16This is huge.
- 9:18He's 35 years old?
- 9:20KARA: That's nearly our age.
- 9:21DANI: I, I know.
- 9:22I, I kind of thought he would be younger.
- 9:24I don't know why.
- 9:24This show came out so long ago.
- 9:26I don't know.
- 9:26I guess 'cause, um, on my screen he was just 17.
- 9:29KARA: Right.
- 9:29DANI: He's on, he's in War for the Planet of the Apes.
- 9:33Okay, awesome.
- 9:34KARA: Okay, Noah.
- 9:35Anyway, we meet him for the first time.
- 9:37He just walks on screen and goes, "Hey, someone put a note in my locker too."
- 9:42DANI: It's not just Bay being targeted.
- 9:44KARA: No, it seems like it's all the hearing people in the
- 9:46pilot program are being targeted.
- 9:49But yeah, Melody comes up while she sees Bay scribbling on the
- 9:53locker, and she's like, "So what's that about?" And Bay lies.
- 9:57She's like, "Oh, just doodling."
- 9:58DANI: What do you think Noah's note said?
- 10:01Like, do you think his also said, "Hearie bitch"?
- 10:03KARA: Oh, God.
- 10:04Dumb blonde.
- 10:06And I'm gonna say that because this whole scene, he's speaking only.
- 10:10DANI: 'Cause he cannot sign for shit.
- 10:12KARA: No.
- 10:13DANI: No.
- 10:13KARA: And this goes to my theory, again, that straight men can't sign.
- 10:17I was at a restaurant in DC yesterday for brunch, and I had my implants off,
- 10:21and we were all signing, the four of us.
- 10:23And the manager came up and was like, "How do you sign, How is
- 10:27everything?" And we tried to show him, and his hands would not move.
- 10:31He just had two thumbs up and would not move to do the sign for how.
- 10:36He was just, like, standing still, dumbfounded.
- 10:40I was like, "It's okay. Just follow along."
- 10:42DANI: Wow.
- 10:42KARA: Anyway, Bay goes to clean out the locker, and that's the end of that scene.
- 10:46Daphne is at home in the guest house with Regina.
- 10:49DANI: I'm sorry, that's not the end of that scene.
- 10:50KARA: Oh, go on.
- 10:51DANI: He says, "Where's a volleyball when you need one?" And Bay, like,
- 10:56laughs and is like, "Ha, ha, you heard about that?" And it's like, yeah,
- 10:59that's why you were being bullied, 'cause you were literally violent.
- 11:02KARA: 'Cause you were bullying someone else.
- 11:03DANI: Yeah.
- 11:04So it's fine.
- 11:06It's not fine, but we do have to move on from it, 'cause I
- 11:08actually can't get into it again.
- 11:10KARA: We are now at the guest house with Daphne, and she
- 11:13is with Regina and Adrianna.
- 11:15And Daphne's explaining that some of the Deaf kids don't like the pilot program.
- 11:19And Regina's like, "Okay, cool, cool, cool. I need to talk to
- 11:22both of you about something."
- 11:23DANI: She kind of has the worst timing this whole episode.
- 11:26That would not be the moment I chose.
- 11:28KARA: I don't like her this episode, nor Bay, so like
- 11:31mother like daughter, I guess.
- 11:32DANI: I guess so.
- 11:33KARA: Yeah.
- 11:34Not, not a fan.
- 11:35But she's like, "It's about Angelo. He's gonna be a dad again."
- 11:38And Daphne pr- assumes that Regina's pregnant?
- 11:42DANI: Crazy.
- 11:43I guess not.
- 11:43KARA: Is it that crazy?
- 11:44DANI: I guess just from an age perspective.
- 11:46KARA: Sure.
- 11:47DANI: But actually, we don't know how old Regina is.
- 11:50KARA: 40s?
- 11:51Really?
- 11:51DANI: Like, may- like, I would assume, but we don't know.
- 11:54KARA: No.
- 11:55Constance Marie looks great.
- 11:56DANI: Yeah.
- 11:57KARA: So.
- 11:57DANI: She could've been a younger mom, I guess.
- 12:00KARA: Yeah, it's really never said.
- 12:02By the… But Regina's like, "No, he got someone else pregnant."
- 12:06DANI: But they were definitely sleeping together, so it's not that out there.
- 12:09KARA: No.
- 12:10And Adrianna the whole time is like, "Yeah, that sounds right. Typical Angelo."
- 12:14DANI: It was fun that she was like, "I'm gonna go watch my telenovela,"
- 12:17and Regina was like, "No, no, no, I have one for you right here."
- 12:20KARA: Barely any signing here.
- 12:22One, because Regina still has that wrist brace on, which we'll talk
- 12:25about the rest of the episode, but Adrianna's barely signing too.
- 12:29Poor Daphne.
- 12:29DANI: She has never been one to do more than a couple of words, I feel.
- 12:34KARA: That's true.
- 12:34DANI: But I do feel really, like, yeah, poor fucking Daphne.
- 12:38KARA: Yeah.
- 12:38DANI: She's being isolated in her home.
- 12:40KARA: Usually it's a poor Bay episode, but this one is a poor Daphne episode.
- 12:44Regina does say at one point about Angelo, like, "I don't know, I thought
- 12:47he changed." Why'd you think that?
- 12:50DANI: And, and what-
- 12:51KARA: And what proof?
- 12:51DANI: Made you think that?
- 12:52The half a million dollars?
- 12:54KARA: Half a million?
- 12:55DANI: Five million?
- 12:56KARA: Yeah, five million.
- 12:57DANI: Well, it's probably-
- 12:57KARA: Which is now half a million now.
- 12:58DANI: He's probably down to half a mil.
- 12:59The house, the eco-pool.
- 13:02What, at what point- Like, what behavior- … did you say,
- 13:05"I'm back on this guy's side"?
- 13:06KARA: What behavior did he do to make you think that he has grown and matured?
- 13:11Nothing.
- 13:12Okay.
- 13:13But Daphne's like, "I'm gonna be a parentified child. You and I, let's
- 13:17go to a day spa this weekend, on me."
- 13:20DANI: Her framing it, too, as she's like, "And Angelo can pay for it,
- 13:23'cause I'm gonna pay for it with the money that I made through my hard
- 13:26work at the food truck he bought me."
- 13:28KARA: You worked for that money.
- 13:29You worked-
- 13:29DANI: That's your money … that's your money.
- 13:30KARA: That's not Angelo's.
- 13:32DANI: And in fact, you should
- 13:33bill it to Angelo, for real.
- 13:35KARA: Literally.
- 13:36DANI: Anyway, she's so Rory Gilmore.
- 13:38Poor Daphne.
- 13:39KARA: Ugh.
- 13:40We were like, "Why is she taking care of Regina? Stop
- 13:42that." Regina doesn't even work.
- 13:44She can book the spa.
- 13:45DANI: I know.
- 13:46It did make me want to go to a day spa, though.
- 13:49It's like, I was like, "We should have an Angelo-free day."
- 13:52KARA: I'm going to Bathhouse on Halloween.
- 13:55DANI: Nice.
- 13:55Just like-
- 13:56KARA: Which I just realized is w- warmed by Bitcoin.
- 13:59DANI: What?
- 14:00KARA: Like, um, the-
- 14:01DANI: No, don't tell me some information that's about to piss me off.
- 14:04I like it there.
- 14:05No, what?
- 14:06KARA: The heat is generated by Bitcoin.
- 14:08DANI: How is that possible?
- 14:10KARA: I don't know, but look it up.
- 14:11DANI: No, you're a person in STEM.
- 14:14How is that possible?
- 14:15Explain it to me.
- 14:16KARA: I truly don't get it, and I've watched so many YouTube videos
- 14:19and I've read so many articles, and that's how they advertise it,
- 14:23like the heat in the sauna, and-
- 14:25DANI: Like a sustainable thing?
- 14:26KARA: It's a sustainability thing but it's not really that sustainable.
- 14:30DANI: We're repurposing heat that would otherwise be generated?
- 14:34KARA: I guess, but then they also make a profit from the
- 14:37Bitcoin, so it's very confusing.
- 14:41But we're going to b- the Bitcoin spa.
- 14:43DANI: The Bitcoin bathhouse?
- 14:44KARA: The Bitcoin bathhouse.
- 14:45DANI: Okay.
- 14:46Okay.
- 14:47Moving on.
- 14:47KARA: Now we're at the Kennish house with John and Kathryn.
- 14:50They're with some guy named Ivan, who I think is probably the PR guy?
- 14:55DANI: I think he's, like, his campaign manager.
- 14:57KARA: Yeah, something like that.
- 14:58DANI: Or whatever, yeah.
- 14:59KARA: Yeah.
- 14:59DANI: I don't really care about John's campaign yet.
- 15:01I know that they wanted to give him a little storyline.
- 15:04There was enough else going on in this episode that I was like, yeah, we get it,
- 15:08Kathryn's about to go too woke for you.
- 15:10You guys are gonna fight.
- 15:11Whatever.
- 15:12KARA: We can actually do this whole plot now.
- 15:13DANI: Yeah, let's wrap it up, 'cause they don't interact with anyone else.
- 15:16KARA: No, it's just the two of them.
- 15:17DANI: And they should be interacting with other people.
- 15:19All three of their kids are in bad situations this episode.
- 15:22KARA: No, really-
- 15:23DANI: They should be checking in folks.
- 15:23KARA: When Bay is like, "I have to do the retreat," they're
- 15:25like, "Nothing's going on?
- 15:27All right."
- 15:28DANI: Sounds good.
- 15:28We believe you.
- 15:29Okay.
- 15:30KARA: Yeah, that was strange.
- 15:32But anyway, they're talking about John is going on a radio show.
- 15:35DANI: Yeah.
- 15:36KARA: John and Kathryn.
- 15:37They're gonna talk on a radio show.
- 15:39DANI: And the Kathryn portion is just share a recipe.
- 15:42KARA: 'Cause she's a Repub-
- 15:43DANI: Because she's a wife.
- 15:44KARA: She's a Republican housewife.
- 15:45DANI: Right.
- 15:46KARA: Yeah, tradwife.
- 15:47DANI: Yeah, they, they do a lot of, "We are proud members of the GOP."
- 15:52KARA: Yeah
- 15:52… DANI: this episode.
- 15:54KARA: So they're talking about the radio show, and John's like,
- 15:57"I don't know, I wanna talk about something more of substance."
- 15:59And Ivan's like, "No, just talk about how good you are at baseball."
- 16:04DANI: Yeah.
- 16:04KARA: "Republicans love baseball."
- 16:06DANI: Yeah.
- 16:06KARA: "Just do baseball."
- 16:08DANI: He's like, "You're famous. You do nothing problematic, and you win."
- 16:12KARA: Yeah.
- 16:13"Just get elected. That's all that matters." And Kathryn's like, "Well,
- 16:16that sucks. Okay." Mid-conversation, Toby comes up to ask to borrow the car
- 16:21because his car is at the auto shop.
- 16:23And this is something we need to know for later.
- 16:24DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 16:25KARA: Great.
- 16:26Okay.
- 16:26Then the radio show happens.
- 16:28Kathryn is giving the radio show host pork chops.
- 16:31I think it's crazy that she's eating on microphone, but okay.
- 16:34DANI: Yeah, it's, it's a no, very 2013 again, it's no cameras, audio only.
- 16:40Kind of like us, aw.
- 16:41KARA: Yeah.
- 16:41DANI: But what we're doing is brave in 2026.
- 16:44KARA: It's true.
- 16:45DANI: And the thing that she served was pork chops-
- 16:48KARA: With a salsa, a corn
- 16:50DANI: salsa … black bean-
- 16:51KARA: Yeah
- 16:51… DANI: black beans and salsa.
- 16:52KARA: Yeah.
- 16:53And the host is like, "Mm, mm, delicious."
- 16:55DANI: Yeah.
- 16:55KARA: "Where'd you get this recipe?" And Kathryn's like, "Well,
- 16:59I got it from John's coworker who is a Guatemalan immigrant."
- 17:04DANI: I think she's lying.
- 17:05KARA: Oh.
- 17:07DANI: Not that it matters, like, I truly don't, I don't think we'll ever come
- 17:09back to it, but she, like, you watch her be like, "Where did I get this recipe?"
- 17:14And then be like, "You know what?
- 17:16I'm gonna say this." I don't know.
- 17:19KARA: I don't think she's lying, but I think she got the country wrong.
- 17:21DANI: Yeah.
- 17:22I mean, I wouldn't be surprised about that either.
- 17:24Yeah.
- 17:24She, 'cause she said, "I think." She was like, "I think it's, I think it's
- 17:28a Guatemalan ins- " I think she says Guatemalan-inspired or something.
- 17:32KARA: I don't know.
- 17:33DANI: It was odd.
- 17:33KARA: Yeah.
- 17:34DANI: The fram- the framing of it was odd.
- 17:36KARA: But anyway, after that she goes, "And he came from Guatemala, and he
- 17:40worked his way up. And, um, we love legal immigration, and we should find ways for
- 17:46everyone to come to the country legally because that's what America is for."
- 17:50DANI: Yeah.
- 17:50KARA: And then the host is like, "Okay." Cool.
- 17:53And then after she gets reprimanded by John.
- 17:55DANI: Yeah, John comes in and he says that Ivan told him he needs
- 17:59to, quote, "Rein in his wife."
- 18:01KARA: Yeah, which Kathryn-
- 18:02DANI: Which, let's… John, do some filtering.
- 18:05You don't need to say verbatim-
- 18:06KARA: No.
- 18:07DANI: What the shitty PR guy said.
- 18:08KARA: You don't.
- 18:09DANI: I think that Kathryn's attempts at politicizing the silly
- 18:13radio show were clunky at best.
- 18:16Like, I think she needs to be better about it-
- 18:18KARA: She just needs some practice
- 18:19… DANI: if she's gonna do it.
- 18:20KARA: Yeah.
- 18:21DANI: But yeah.
- 18:22I don't know.
- 18:23I just, like, don't care.
- 18:24KARA: Me neither.
- 18:25And that was the end of that plot.
- 18:26DANI: Yeah, that's their whole plot.
- 18:27Meanwhile-
- 18:28KARA: Meanwhile, we're back at Carlton.
- 18:30DANI: Yeah.
- 18:31KARA: Bay is so embarrassing, because she's sitting outside with Emmett,
- 18:35and she's like, "I'm so sick of being bullied for being hearing.
- 18:38It's the same as having brown hair and brown eyes. I can't help it."
- 18:41DANI: You could help speaking with your voice, like that.
- 18:45KARA: Yeah.
- 18:45DANI: At this moment in the episode, Paolo walked through the room and
- 18:48went, "Why is that girl being so annoying? Is she always like that?"
- 18:52KARA: Did you see the sticker she made?
- 18:54It says, "We hear, and we're here."
- 18:57DANI: Oof.
- 18:59KARA: Yeah.
- 18:59And she says-
- 18:59DANI: Bet she was real proud of herself for that one.
- 19:01KARA: No, she was like, "Natalie thinks she can get me with graffiti?
- 19:05She doesn't realize she's messing with the wrong girl." And Emmett rightfully
- 19:09says, "I don't know if that's gonna help," and he's right, 'cause it looks stupid.
- 19:13DANI: Yeah.
- 19:13KARA: "We hear and we're here." And then he, he's also like, "I don't know, Bay.
- 19:18Like, the last two art classes are getting cut because the school needs to pay for
- 19:22an interpreter for you hearing people."
- 19:24DANI: Yeah, and then she's sad for, like, one second, and then instead of
- 19:28being like, "Hey, maybe I should ask my rich parents to throw a fundraiser
- 19:32like they always were doing for Buckner-
- 19:33KARA: Literally
- 19:34… DANI: so that we can keep our art classes and have interpreters," she's just
- 19:37like, "Well, we didn't ask for that." And it's like, well, you kind of did.
- 19:42Like, your presence asks for it.
- 19:44KARA: You met Teo and Noah.
- 19:46DANI: Your struggling in class asks for it.
- 19:48KARA: Yes.
- 19:49'Cause the school wants to provide you guys with a good
- 19:51education like everyone else.
- 19:53So they feel like they need to hire an interpreter.
- 19:55DANI: I feel like a thing missing from this is also just that we have no
- 20:00clarifying info about the pilot program.
- 20:02KARA: No, we don't.
- 20:03DANI: Like, they still haven't told us why the fuck it exists.
- 20:06KARA: They'll go into it later, I think.
- 20:07DANI: Yeah.
- 20:08KARA: But no, not at the moment, they haven't.
- 20:10But it's been hinted that Carlton is struggling, so this is a way to get
- 20:14some more money for the school, I think.
- 20:16DANI: It seems like-
- 20:16KARA: Or more funding
- 20:17… DANI: not a choice.
- 20:18Let's have some hearing kids go here and pay for their interpreters, and then what?
- 20:22KARA: Right, right.
- 20:22DANI: You think they'll have more money?
- 20:24'Cause Bay's not doing shit.
- 20:25KARA: More funding.
- 20:26DANI: It's not, this plan isn't working very well.
- 20:28KARA: No, it's not.
- 20:29Emmett also notices this plan isn't working.
- 20:32He goes to his mom and says, "S- there's some bullying going on."
- 20:37They're writing notes in the hearing kids' lockers, and Melody is like,
- 20:40"That sucks. I hate the pilot program, but I'm not thrilled about this."
- 20:43DANI: Yeah.
- 20:44I do like that she admits that she's like, "Well, I kind of knew that was
- 20:47going on, but I thought if I ignored it, it would just, like, work itself out."
- 20:50KARA: Great guidance counselor.
- 20:52DANI: She's so me, actually.
- 20:53KARA: Yeah.
- 20:54And she's like, "Ugh, I gotta do something about this?"
- 20:57DANI: Yeah, but then her solution is kind of insane, okay?
- 21:01I, I understand that it's television, and so they're like, "Well, this needs
- 21:04to happen ASAP," but can you imagine…
- 21:06KARA: I'd be furious.
- 21:08DANI: It's like midweek, and they're like, "By the way, this weekend,
- 21:11cancel your plans. You're coming on an overnight retreat." Again, so-
- 21:16KARA: Student tolerance retreat.
- 21:17DANI: The school doesn't have money, so I don't know what
- 21:21the thought process is here.
- 21:22And they post the… It's not everyone going.
- 21:26It's not like the whole school.
- 21:27They post-
- 21:28KARA: It's like 10 or 15 kids.
- 21:29DANI: Yeah, they post the list of the names up like it's the
- 21:32cast list for the spring musical.
- 21:34KARA: No, but instead it's you being required to go.
- 21:38It's all the hearing kids.
- 21:39DANI: It's the list of shame.
- 21:41KARA: The list of shame.
- 21:42Literally, it's all the hearing kids plus some of the Deaf kids.
- 21:45DANI: Yeah.
- 21:46KARA: And Melody later is gonna say, "You were invited because
- 21:49you're either a role model for Carlton, or you're a trouble maker."
- 21:53DANI: Which literally just Daphne.
- 21:54KARA: Yeah, just Daphne's the role model.
- 21:55They sh-
- 21:56DANI: I guess Emmett.
- 21:57KARA: I guess?
- 21:58DANI: I guess Melody was like, "Well, you're my kid, so you're coming".
- 22:00I don't know.
- 22:01KARA: Someone's gotta watch you.
- 22:02DANI: Yeah, someone's gotta.
- 22:04Lord knows it won't be his dad.
- 22:06KARA: Oh, God.
- 22:06Yeah, we haven't seen him.
- 22:08Yeah.
- 22:08Natalie sees the post and, and is like, "Ugh, thanks a lot."
- 22:11She signs cry baby to her.
- 22:13DANI: Which Bay doesn't get, which I was like, I don't know,
- 22:15that looked pretty obvious.
- 22:16KARA: Yeah, it's tears in front of your face.
- 22:18DANI: Yeah.
- 22:18KARA: Very dramatic.
- 22:19DANI: And Bay's like, "What?" And Emmett has to finger spell it so slow.
- 22:23KARA: So slow.
- 22:24DANI: Right in front of Natalie.
- 22:25I'm like, yeah, I- you're just proving her point again and again and again.
- 22:29KARA: I know.
- 22:30Yeah.
- 22:31It's the next morning.
- 22:32I feel like they posted this on Friday, and now it's Saturday.
- 22:35DANI: Yeah.
- 22:35KARA: And they have to go.
- 22:36But Bay's packing a bag, and John and Kathryn are like, "So you're
- 22:39telling me everything's okay at school, and yet you have to go to
- 22:42a student tolerance retreat?" And Bay's like, "Yep, everything's cool.
- 22:46Everything's great." And they're like, "Okay."
- 22:48DANI: "Okay." Her braids looked really good.
- 22:51KARA: They, they were cute.
- 22:51DANI: Yeah, they were really good.
- 22:52KARA: Braids are a good idea for camping-
- 22:54DANI: Yeah
- 22:54… KARA: if you can't shower.
- 22:55Daphne and Bay are packing the car.
- 22:57Daphne's pissed, 'cause she was supposed to go to the day spa with her mom.
- 23:00DANI: Yeah.
- 23:01KARA: And understandably, I'd be pissed too.
- 23:03DANI: Yeah, I feel like, I don't know, I feel like it's good that
- 23:07Daphne got out of having to take care of Regina for the weekend.
- 23:10KARA: No, that, that is true.
- 23:12She's also mad at Bay, though, 'cause she's like-
- 23:14DANI: Yeah, she's like, "You're being an asshole."
- 23:16KARA: "But also, you didn't tell me about Angelo.
- 23:18I had to find out from my mom, like, weeks later."
- 23:21DANI: I think Bay was fine to do that, I've decided.
- 23:24KARA: Oh, really?
- 23:25DANI: I don't think it was her place.
- 23:26Why did Regina wait so long to tell Daphne?
- 23:28KARA: That's true.
- 23:29DANI: Once again, Daphne is misdirecting her anger.
- 23:32She needs to be more, uh, mad at her mother.
- 23:34KARA: That is true.
- 23:35She's not even mad at her mom this episode, too.
- 23:37DANI: No.
- 23:37KARA: She's just more sad.
- 23:38DANI: Yeah.
- 23:39KARA: It's… Yeah.
- 23:40DANI: And she says, like, it… She tell, to Regina, when Regina's like, "Are you
- 23:44okay?" She's like, "It doesn't affect me." And then she turns around and says to Bay,
- 23:48"I can't believe you wouldn't tell me."
- 23:49KARA: Yeah.
- 23:50DANI: Which is, which is it?
- 23:51KARA: Right.
- 23:52She's trying to figure out her feelings.
- 23:54Regina says goodbye to Daphne and Bay, and she's like, "Have fun.
- 23:57I'm gonna watch Breaking Bad."
- 23:59DANI: That was weird.
- 24:00KARA: It's 2013.
- 24:01DANI: I guess so.
- 24:02KARA: Yeah.
- 24:02DANI: What channel did Breaking Bad air on?
- 24:04KARA: But Daphne's like, "Screw Breaking Bad.
- 24:06Come join me, and you can hang, hang out with Melody." And Regina's like, "Sure, I
- 24:11have a doctor's appointment for my wrist."
- 24:13DANI: Dun, dun, dun.
- 24:14KARA: Dun, dun, dun.
- 24:15"But after that, I will come join you."
- 24:17Great.
- 24:18Now, we're at the auto shop.
- 24:20Toby is there, I guess, because he had to get his brake pads replaced or something.
- 24:24DANI: Okay.
- 24:25Sure, he's there.
- 24:26KARA: That would suck if he was in a car accident prior
- 24:28and then gets into another one.
- 24:30The insurance is gonna be so high.
- 24:32DANI: I know, and that's a teen boy.
- 24:34Yeah, so he's there, and guess who else is there?
- 24:36Angelo's baby mama?
- 24:39I don't know what to call her.
- 24:40KARA: Yeah.
- 24:40Lana.
- 24:41DANI: I forget her name.
- 24:41Lana.
- 24:42KARA: Lana.
- 24:42DANI: Lana's her name.
- 24:43God, she's so beautiful.
- 24:44KARA: It's funny 'cause Daphne, in this episode, also is like, "Uh, is she als-
- 24:48is she African-American and gorgeous?"
- 24:50DANI: Yeah.
- 24:50KARA: The same thing Bay said.
- 24:52DANI: Yeah.
- 24:53Just, like, stunning, stunning girl.
- 24:54KARA: No, she's beautiful.
- 24:56Lana's car is also not working, and the mechanic is like, "Just walk to the
- 25:01bus stop. It'll be good for the baby."
- 25:03DANI: "It's so good for pregnant ladies to do that." God.
- 25:06Poor Lana.
- 25:06KARA: I know.
- 25:07DANI: And Toby's like, "Hey."
- 25:09KARA: "Hey."
- 25:10DANI: "Remember me?"
- 25:11KARA: "I don't know if you remember me, but, um- I'm the guy that saw
- 25:14you f- fight with Angelo. But, um, I can give you a ride, and I can
- 25:19drive you back tomorrow for the car."
- 25:22DANI: I feel like at the start of the show, I was like, poor
- 25:24Toby's always getting caught in the middle of situations.
- 25:27I'm actually seeing now that I feel he's inserting himself.
- 25:31KARA: He really didn't have to.
- 25:32DANI: He didn't have to do that.
- 25:33KARA: Especially at the end, he really didn't have to do that.
- 25:35DANI: No.
- 25:36KARA: We'll talk about it.
- 25:37DANI: Well, I think we should do him, too, 'cause he's separate.
- 25:40KARA: Let's do it.
- 25:41DANI: So Toby, it, goes on a whole journey this episode.
- 25:44KARA: Yeah.
- 25:45He drives Lana to where she needs to go.
- 25:47DANI: Him and Lana, they, they are, like, this now.
- 25:49They are bonded.
- 25:50KARA: Bonded for life.
- 25:51Trauma bonded for life.
- 25:52DANI: Trauma.
- 25:52Literally trauma bonded.
- 25:54KARA: They're talking in the car about Angelo.
- 25:56She's very pregnant.
- 25:57That ba- that baby is about to pop.
- 25:59DANI: Yeah.
- 26:00And she is like… Toby's like, "Ha ha, you're not gonna have that baby
- 26:03now, right?" And she's like, "No." But she's doing, like, deep, she's
- 26:06going like, "Whoo, whoo, whoo."
- 26:08And he is freaked out.
- 26:10KARA: And he gets so distracted that he gets into a fender bender.
- 26:14DANI: Yeah.
- 26:14KARA: He rear-ends another car.
- 26:15DANI: I, they were very ABC Family dramatic about the shot of the
- 26:20crash 'cause for a second I was like, oh, my God, is this about
- 26:22to be a really serious accident?
- 26:23KARA: I thought, like-
- 26:24DANI: Like, the way they filmed it.
- 26:25KARA: I thought it may look like they lost the baby or something.
- 26:27DANI: Yeah.
- 26:28It made it look crazy.
- 26:29KARA: But no, they cut to it, and-
- 26:31DANI: It,
- 26:31KARA: Just the taillight's broken.
- 26:32DANI: Yeah, just the, and the guy's bumper is a little messed up.
- 26:35Toby's car is, like, fine.
- 26:36No airbags were deployed.
- 26:38KARA: Yeah, not a scratch on Toby and Lana.
- 26:39DANI: Yeah.
- 26:40KARA: Great.
- 26:40DANI: She's sitting on the curb, and then they're like, "Let's go
- 26:43to the hospital just to be safe."
- 26:45KARA: 'Cause she is like, "Ooh, contraction. Ow. Oof."
- 26:49DANI: Yeah.
- 26:50Which as someone who watches a lot of media featuring pregnant women, everybody
- 26:53knows that's just Braxton-Hicks.
- 26:55It's a plot, it's a plot device, guys.
- 26:57KARA: So- But also, something stressful could-
- 26:59DANI: Sure.
- 26:59KARA: Induce labor.
- 27:00DANI: Sure.
- 27:01It's- But not in this case.
- 27:02In this case, they go to the hospital.
- 27:04KARA: They do.
- 27:05They go to the hospital.
- 27:06She's gonna get an ultrasound.
- 27:07DANI: And she keeps being like, "You don't have to stay," but
- 27:11then it's like he's too in it now.
- 27:13KARA: But then she also says, "I have no support system.
- 27:16I'm far away from my family."
- 27:17DANI: Yeah.
- 27:17KARA: "Everyone's in Boston, and I haven't told anyone that I'm pregnant."
- 27:20DANI: Yeah.
- 27:20KARA: "I ha- don't have a single friend."
- 27:22DANI: Yeah.
- 27:22Apparently, no, no med school friends.
- 27:24Nothing.
- 27:25And then they're like, "Okay, we're gonna do an ultrasound to be safe." And
- 27:29so Toby's like, "I'm gonna give you some privacy 'cause you're pulling off your-"
- 27:33KARA: her shirt, yeah.
- 27:34DANI: Your stomach's out.
- 27:34I don't know.
- 27:35Let's, I'm gonna be polite.
- 27:36This is an 18-year-old boy.
- 27:38And oh, also, they think he's the dad.
- 27:40KARA: Right.
- 27:41DANI: And both of them are so awkward about saying no.
- 27:45KARA: Toby's like, "I, I've-"
- 27:46DANI: "I'm, I'm, I don't, I, I ju- we d- we've never…" And she's like, "We're
- 27:50friends." That's a weird thing to say.
- 27:53I feel like there's, like, a weird tension between Lucas Grabeel and
- 27:57every single one of these women.
- 27:59And I think, I don't think it's his fault.
- 28:01Like, I think he's doing a good job acting, and it's just,
- 28:03like, there's weird subtext.
- 28:04I don't know.
- 28:05I don't know.
- 28:06That they keep trying to be, like, Toby's got chemistry with everybody.
- 28:09I don't know what it is.
- 28:11But-
- 28:11KARA: And he doesn't.
- 28:12DANI: Just say, like, this is an 18-year-old boy.
- 28:15You don't have to be like, "Oh, here's the context." Just be like, no, he's family.
- 28:20KARA: Just say no.
- 28:21DANI: He's family.
- 28:22Whatever.
- 28:23KARA: Eh, yeah.
- 28:23DANI: He drove me here.
- 28:24They don't need anything more than that.
- 28:26But anyway, he's trying to leave.
- 28:28He's trying to give her space.
- 28:29And she's like, "You can stay if you want."
- 28:31KARA: Yeah.
- 28:31DANI: Girl, why would you say that?
- 28:33KARA: And he's like, "Okay."
- 28:34DANI: Right.
- 28:34And then it's like, now it's weird if he leaves, even though he clearly wants to.
- 28:38KARA: Yeah.
- 28:38DANI: So he stays, and he's looking.
- 28:41And the ultrasound tech cannot fucking read a room.
- 28:44She's like, "Wow, would you look at that? How amazing," when you
- 28:48know this guy's not the dad and just was trying to leave the room.
- 28:51And then Lana fully turned away, her face turned away, looking the other way.
- 28:55KARA: She doesn't want to look.
- 28:56DANI: Maybe if we read some context, we see a pregnant woman who's, like,
- 29:00not super visibly relieved when they say the baby's probably fine, is
- 29:04not super excited to get an extra peek at the fetus she's carrying.
- 29:09Maybe we say, huh, okay, maybe there's an added layer here.
- 29:12Maybe I don't have to lay on the whole… Like-
- 29:15KARA: Yeah
- 29:15… DANI: if a pregnant person is like, wants to do the whole, wow, that's
- 29:19amazing, that's a beautiful thing, trust that they're gonna do it on their own.
- 29:22You don't have to do it for them.
- 29:23KARA: I agree.
- 29:24DANI: And so then Toby's like, "What's up with that?"
- 29:27And she's like, "Well, I don't look at the screen 'cause it makes it harder, 'cause
- 29:30I'm gonna give her up for adoption."
- 29:32KARA: And Toby is like, "Oh, great. Now I'm saddled with more information
- 29:35that I don't need to know."
- 29:37DANI: Also, do we think Angelo knows this?
- 29:40KARA: No.
- 29:41DANI: She says it so matter of fact.
- 29:43I wonder, I don't know.
- 29:45I- I'm like, is that a manipulation tactic?
- 29:47Like, why would you say, I, it, I don't- I just- If he doesn't know,
- 29:50don't say that to the 18-year-old boy.
- 29:52And if he does know.
- 29:54I don't know.
- 29:55KARA: But in the car she was like, "I don't want to burden Angelo
- 29:58with anything." So I just feel like he doesn't know anything.
- 30:00DANI: I'm sure we'll find out next episode, guys, but-
- 30:03KARA: The baby's fine.
- 30:03DANI: Baby's fine.
- 30:04KARA: That scene is over, and then it's the next day.
- 30:06DANI: Yeah.
- 30:07KARA: He drives her back to the auto shop so she can get the car, get her car.
- 30:11DANI: Yeah.
- 30:11He's still involved.
- 30:12He's getting deeper and deeper.
- 30:14KARA: Yeah.
- 30:14DANI: And he can't help himself.
- 30:15He says, "Hey, she does have a family."
- 30:19KARA: The baby.
- 30:19DANI: The baby that you're thinking of giving up for adoption,
- 30:22'cause she has my sister, Bay.
- 30:24Do we think he talked to Bay about this?
- 30:26No.
- 30:26KARA: No.
- 30:27DANI: Maybe check with Bay before, you know.
- 30:30He's like, "She has Bay."
- 30:32KARA: Talk to an adult.
- 30:33DANI: "And my parents also." Maybe they should all meet her
- 30:36before you decide anything.
- 30:38I don't know.
- 30:39Let's leave this poor woman alone.
- 30:41KARA: You're not the one who's pregnant.
- 30:42Stay out of it.
- 30:44DANI: Both the child and the woman, I want them in separate spaces,
- 30:47separate safe spaces by themselves.
- 30:49Away from this situation.
- 30:51Yeah.
- 30:52KARA: That's a lot to handle.
- 30:54DANI: And that's the end- that's what Toby's up to this whole episode.
- 30:56Toby's getting deeper and deeper involved in this Lana situation.
- 30:59KARA: In like the Angelo and Lana situation.
- 31:01DANI: Yeah.
- 31:01He's very invested in the fate of this baby for some reason.
- 31:05Back to our core two, our girls.
- 31:07KARA: Our girls.
- 31:08We're at the retreat.
- 31:09It's retreat time.
- 31:10We're going to camp.
- 31:12Emmett is with Daphne.
- 31:13They're walking and he's like, "Hey, can you cover for me if Bay and I walk
- 31:18away?" And Daphne's like, "Okay, sure.
- 31:21Have fun."
- 31:22DANI: So she's like, "Oh, so you get some time together." But what she signs is-
- 31:27KARA: Is like making love.
- 31:28DANI: Yeah.
- 31:29KARA: Ew.
- 31:30That's your sister.
- 31:30DANI: She signs making love time, I think, right?
- 31:32I was like, whoa, those, those captions are real tame compared-
- 31:36KARA: Yeah
- 31:36… DANI: to what she said.
- 31:37I know, that's your sister.
- 31:38Icky.
- 31:39KARA: I know.
- 31:40DANI: But yeah.
- 31:41KARA: All right.
- 31:41Whatever.
- 31:42Um, Noah is walking with Bay, and then all of a sudden he takes such
- 31:45a dramatic fall to the ground.
- 31:47DANI: It is quite dramatic.
- 31:48KARA: Yeah.
- 31:49And Bay's like, "Oh, no, what's wrong?" And he goes, "I have Ménière's disease."
- 31:52DANI: Yeah.
- 31:53KARA: Which is what Katie Leclerc has in real life.
- 31:55DANI: Yeah.
- 31:56KARA: Yeah.
- 31:57And it's a condition where you have a lot of dizzy spells, you lose your hearing,
- 32:01um, you have balance issues, and actually Max Lloyd-Jones has this in real life.
- 32:06DANI: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 32:07KARA: I know.
- 32:08Awesome.
- 32:08DANI: Yeah.
- 32:09KARA: That they actually hired someone who has it.
- 32:10DANI: Representation.
- 32:11KARA: "And that's why I'm here at Carlton, 'cause I'm losing my hearing, and my
- 32:14parents thought it'd be a good idea to get a head start on the whole hand thing."
- 32:19DANI: So what bums me out about this is that he then goes on, Bay says, "I
- 32:23thought you were here 'cause you had Deaf relatives," and he goes on to say-
- 32:26KARA: I do.
- 32:26DANI: "Yes. My, my uncle also has Ménière's disease and he is Deaf."
- 32:30So w- is there, has there just been like no effort for the uncle?
- 32:34KARA: M- yeah.
- 32:35My question was, so does the family sign for your uncle and you,
- 32:38maybe you just didn't learn yet?
- 32:40DANI: I think the answer is no.
- 32:42KARA: Right.
- 32:43Maybe they were like, "Well, perhaps the uncle is struggling and maybe the
- 32:46hand thing would be good for you."
- 32:48I don't know.
- 32:49DANI: Yeah.
- 32:50KARA: But Bay's like, "You should tell people. Maybe there'll be more
- 32:52understanding about why you're here, and you're not just some hearing guy."
- 32:56DANI: Yeah.
- 32:57KARA: You're hard of hearing.
- 32:58And he's like, "No, no, I don't wanna."
- 33:00DANI: Yeah, that's so true, 'cause he discloses that he's already lost
- 33:0360% of his hearing in his right ear.
- 33:05KARA: He's hard of hearing now.
- 33:07DANI: He's a hard of hearing individual.
- 33:07KARA: Hard of hearing king.
- 33:08DANI: Yeah.
- 33:09But you know, denial is-
- 33:11KARA: Yeah
- 33:11… DANI: strong.
- 33:12KARA: And then yeah, Noah's like, "I'm okay.
- 33:14I don't really wanna talk about it." And Bay's like, "Well,
- 33:17actually, let's make this about me."
- 33:18DANI: I, yeah, was torn between being like… 'Cause he's
- 33:22like, "It's just so hard.
- 33:23I mean, one day you're fine and then the next day your life changes." And
- 33:26she's like, "Boy, do I know about that.
- 33:29Let me talk about me for a second." But then at the same time, I'm like, I don't
- 33:33know, he di- he clearly was done talking.
- 33:35KARA: It seems like he liked the distraction, but also it was a
- 33:38little crazy, 'cause that's such a s- you can't one-up that story.
- 33:42DANI: Yeah, those are two, yeah, very different things.
- 33:44Let's not, let's not compare.
- 33:46KARA: And again, the two of them are chatting, talking only.
- 33:49This should be a signing only weekend.
- 33:51Melody should have a gun to all their heads.
- 33:53Emmett does see them chatting from afar, and he makes a little jealous face.
- 33:56DANI: He's feeling sensitive.
- 33:58KARA: Now they have to do an activity.
- 34:00Melody has them assigned an activity for them.
- 34:02There's an object under the tarp that's made of like sticks and rocks, and they
- 34:06have to somehow communicate to the other half of their team what's under the rocks,
- 34:11and then they have to build it themselves.
- 34:13It's all about communication and team building.
- 34:15DANI: Sure.
- 34:15KARA: Whatever.
- 34:16Thanks, Melody.
- 34:17And she does emphasize they only, they can only sign.
- 34:21DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 34:22KARA: Thank you.
- 34:22So we'll see what happens with that.
- 34:24DANI: Bay's breaking the rules.
- 34:26KARA: Simcomming!
- 34:27DANI: Not fucking following the rules, and I just feel like it's
- 34:32m- irresponsible to s- throw… Noah's been thrown to the sharks.
- 34:37He couldn't have… I don't know, send him to like an intensive crash
- 34:41course for beginners in sign language before you send him to the Deaf school.
- 34:45KARA: Where he gets bullied.
- 34:46DANI: 'Cause he has no base.
- 34:49KARA: Nothing.
- 34:50DANI: Nothing.
- 34:51KARA: I know.
- 34:52DANI: Like, I feel bad for him.
- 34:53KARA: Me too.
- 34:54DANI: But I don't feel bad for Bay.
- 34:55Get it together, Bay.
- 34:56KARA: Me too.
- 34:57While this is happening, Regina's at the doctor for her wrist, and she's like,
- 35:01"Ugh, I can't wait to take off this wrist brace finally." And the doctor's
- 35:05like, "Yeah, that's not happening 'cause you have osteonecrosis in your wrist."
- 35:10DANI: Necrosis is, was a crazy word to hear.
- 35:12KARA: Yeah.
- 35:13I was like, oh, death, okay.
- 35:15DANI: Yeah.
- 35:15KARA: You can't sign, paint, or cut hair ever again at
- 35:18the risk of damaging it more.
- 35:21And I know they're doing this because Constance Marie, the
- 35:23character, could not do any of that-
- 35:26DANI: Yeah
- 35:26… KARA: because she had severe tendonitis in her wrist, but that is, that's wild.
- 35:30DANI: It's a really intense storyline to go with.
- 35:33KARA: You can't sign ever again with your Deaf daughter?
- 35:36All right.
- 35:36We'll get to this later.
- 35:38DANI: Yeah.
- 35:38KARA: 'Cause Daphne and Melody are gonna find out, but oh my God.
- 35:41It's just- I, I, I hate it.
- 35:43DANI: Yeah.
- 35:44I'm gonna cut it, but I almo- I almost feel like they should've
- 35:46recast Constance when this came up.
- 35:49KARA: Is there a way where she could have just someone else's hand and sign?
- 35:54So she-
- 35:54DANI: Like, kind of, yeah.
- 35:56I don't know.
- 35:57Genuinely, I don't know.
- 35:59KARA: Like, she can have her head, but you don't need to see the elbow.
- 36:02You just need to see a hand.
- 36:03DANI: Just a hand.
- 36:04I mean, with the way that Switched at Birth loves to use all kinds of
- 36:07funny angles with signing anyway, I feel like they could have doctored it.
- 36:11KARA: I really think they could have.
- 36:13DANI: Yeah.
- 36:13It just does, it does so much, it shapes so much of Regina's further downfall as
- 36:20a mother figure, I feel, in the show.
- 36:23KARA: Yeah.
- 36:24DANI: Because she doesn't address it very well in this episode.
- 36:28KARA: No.
- 36:28DANI: And yeah, I mean, obviously that's a terrible thing for the
- 36:32character to be experiencing.
- 36:34KARA: Yes.
- 36:35DANI: But it makes me feel like I'm in my hater bag for real, but…
- 36:39And I am sorry to Constance.
- 36:41Yeah, I like your idea.
- 36:42They should have hired hands to come in and be her hands.
- 36:45KARA: Y- yeah.
- 36:46Every time Regina signs, just-
- 36:48DANI: Just, just-
- 36:49… KARA: show hands
- 36:49… DANI: she wa- it's not like she was doing that much-
- 36:52KARA: No
- 36:52… DANI: before.
- 36:53It's tough.
- 36:53KARA: We're at the retreat.
- 36:55Uh, Emmett has to describe the thing on the ground to Bay and Natalie,
- 36:59and then Bay and Natalie have to build whatever Emmett is describing.
- 37:03DANI: Yes.
- 37:03KARA: Um, but Bay is distracted because Noah's in the distance looking sickly.
- 37:07DANI: Bay, now that she knows his, like, secret, is like,
- 37:10"Well, I'm your caretaker," which I think would piss me off.
- 37:15KARA: Yeah.
- 37:16M- like, leave me alone.
- 37:17DANI: Yeah.
- 37:18I'm good.
- 37:18KARA: I can take care of myself.
- 37:19DANI: Noah doesn't seem that bothered by it, but I don't know.
- 37:22I was kind of like, Bay, okay.
- 37:24I- Yeah.
- 37:25It was, it was sort of giving, like, when you're in middle school and your
- 37:28friend, like, something happened to your friend, and so they're crying, and
- 37:31you're, like, the only one who knows.
- 37:33And then someone else is like, "What's wrong with them?" And
- 37:35you're like, "Only I know about it, and you can't ask about it."
- 37:38KARA: Yeah.
- 37:39DANI: Like, she's having a really hard day.
- 37:40It's private.
- 37:41That was kind of what Bay was giving.
- 37:43KARA: And you feel kind of prideful that you're the only one who knows.
- 37:45DANI: Exactly.
- 37:46KARA: Yeah.
- 37:47DANI: That's sort of how she was being with Emmett, and it's like, to Emmett?
- 37:50Come on.
- 37:51KARA: Yeah, 'cause Emmett asks, "Why are you so obsessed with
- 37:54her, Em- obsessed with him?"
- 37:55And Bay's like, "You can't know. Only I know."
- 37:58DANI: Yeah.
- 37:59She's like, "He's having a really hard day.
- 38:01He's not feeling well." And Emmett's like, "Then he should tell my mom." And
- 38:05she's like, "No, it's not like that."
- 38:07KARA: You wouldn't get it.
- 38:07DANI: "You wouldn't understand." Oh my God.
- 38:09I don't know.
- 38:10Like, also later on, he's gonna be like, "What is your deal?"
- 38:14And it's like, yeah, Bay, I don't know, you transferred into his school.
- 38:16You caused all kinds of drama.
- 38:18You made all of his friends have beef with you, and then you made him have to
- 38:22navigate between you and your friends.
- 38:24KARA: Yeah.
- 38:25DANI: And then you're like, okay, now this random hearing guy, you actually can't
- 38:28know about what's going on with that.
- 38:30Sorry.
- 38:31KARA: And I clearly like him.
- 38:32DANI: Yeah.
- 38:33And look, who wouldn't?
- 38:34He's got dreamy eyes just like Emmett.
- 38:36KARA: He's cute.
- 38:37DANI: Yeah.
- 38:37KARA: Yeah.
- 38:37I wrote "Bay stop speaking challenge: impossible."
- 38:40DANI: Yeah.
- 38:41KARA: She's simcomming the whole time during this exchange.
- 38:43DANI: Even with Emmett.
- 38:44Shut up, girl.
- 38:47KARA: He can't-
- 38:47DANI: Shut up.
- 38:47KARA: He can't hear you.
- 38:48DANI: No.
- 38:49KARA: Natalie can't hear you.
- 38:50Daphne can't- Melody.
- 38:52I…
- 38:52DANI: Yeah.
- 38:53KARA: Shut up.
- 38:54We're still at the retreat, it's nighttime.
- 38:56Melody checks in with the kids and is like, "So, how did the day go?"
- 39:00DANI: Bad.
- 39:01KARA: Yeah, everyone's like, "Bad." Natalie's like, "Fine, if
- 39:04you're okay with crappy signing."
- 39:06DANI: Tea.
- 39:06KARA: Yeah.
- 39:07And Bay's like, "May-" This was a crazy line.
- 39:10She says, "Maybe try speaking and see how good you are at that."
- 39:14DANI: Dude, I almost had to turn it off.
- 39:17KARA: I know.
- 39:18DANI: That was so fucking crazy.
- 39:19KARA: That was awful.
- 39:20DANI: That is, like, not the s- It's so frustrating that they're doing,
- 39:23like, a reverse racism plot line.
- 39:25KARA: Literally.
- 39:26DANI: And what's more frustrating is, spoiler alert, they're gonna do
- 39:28that in a couple of seasons, too.
- 39:30KARA: Yeah.
- 39:30DANI: But, like, it is so…
- 39:32What do you mean?
- 39:33What do you mean try speak- Those aren't the same thing.
- 39:36KARA: No.
- 39:36DANI: Being a shitty signer is a failure on your part-
- 39:40KARA: Yes
- 39:40… DANI: to not be trying and working harder.
- 39:42Like.
- 39:43Yeah.
- 39:44KARA: That was an insane thing to say.
- 39:46And I wish Melody kicked her out.
- 39:48DANI: Once again, yeah, I just feel like Bay's behavior really warrants them
- 39:52being like, "Actually get the fuck out."
- 39:54KARA: I know.
- 39:55But instead Melody hands out notepads and is like, "I want you to partner up
- 40:00and make a list of all the things you think you know about your partner."
- 40:03DANI: Yeah.
- 40:03KARA: "And when you're done, you need to share it, and it can't be anything
- 40:05related to them being deaf or hearing."
- 40:07DANI: Yes, and she partners up Noah with Matthew.
- 40:10Is this the first time that we see-
- 40:11KARA: Is Daniel Durant Matthew?
- 40:13DANI: Yeah.
- 40:13KARA: Okay, I think it's the first time, then.
- 40:15DANI: So he has no lines.
- 40:16KARA: No, he's just sitting on the side grumbling.
- 40:18DANI: Yeah.
- 40:18KARA: Like, "Oh, wah, wah, wah, wah."
- 40:19DANI: Yeah, he has, like, no discernible, like, uh, we only
- 40:22know his name from the captions.
- 40:24But yeah, Daniel Durant, hi, welcome.
- 40:26KARA: Hi.
- 40:27DANI: Love him.
- 40:28KARA: He's so young there.
- 40:29DANI: I know.
- 40:29KARA: It's crazy.
- 40:30Bay and Natalie are paired up, and they made their list.
- 40:32They come up, and this was a, this was kind of a bad idea on
- 40:36Melody's part, but whatever.
- 40:37DANI: It was, but then it worked at the end, and it did get me.
- 40:40I was like, aw, the power of, like, common ground, gosh, I love it.
- 40:43KARA: I know.
- 40:44DANI: But it does not go well to start.
- 40:45KARA: Yeah, 'cause Bay's like, "Natalie's a bully." Natalie says, "Bay's a
- 40:48poser." And then Bay says, "Natalie's a bigot." And then Natalie rightfully
- 40:53says, "You don't know anything about discrimination." And then Melody's like,
- 40:56"Okay, let's stop." How about we say something positive about one another?
- 41:01And then Bay's like, "Proud." Natalie goes, "Passionate." They say proud,
- 41:06tough, honest, passionate, strong, and they also agree that they're both honest.
- 41:11DANI: Yeah.
- 41:12It's a good-
- 41:13KARA: Yeah.
- 41:13And Melody's thrilled.
- 41:14DANI: It's good.
- 41:15KARA: And then she's like, "Okay, good night. Yay!."
- 41:18DANI: "Let's end on a high. Everybody get a s'more."
- 41:21KARA: Yay.
- 41:22DANI: I don't know how much common ground was actually achieved,
- 41:26but they didn't kill each other.
- 41:28KARA: No, I think she's like, "Great, then they're fine."
- 41:30DANI: Yeah.
- 41:31Melody's maybe not a good guidance counselor.
- 41:33KARA: No, I don't think she is.
- 41:35DANI: I'm also thinking about, like, where's Travis?
- 41:38KARA: Where is Travis?
- 41:39DANI: Where the fuck is Travis?
- 41:40He should be at this retreat.
- 41:42Also, as a guidance counselor, I feel like she should be more worried about
- 41:45him, like keeping closer tabs on him.
- 41:48KARA: I know.
- 41:48He's gonna be homeless soon.
- 41:50Regina arrives at the retreat.
- 41:51It's, like, 8:00 PM.
- 41:52It's dark.
- 41:53DANI: Yeah, which is kind of, she was like, "I'll be there right after my
- 41:57doctor's appointment this afternoon."
- 41:58So now she's just showing up at night.
- 41:59KARA: At this point, just don't go.
- 42:00DANI: I know.
- 42:01KARA: You missed everything.
- 42:01DANI: Yeah.
- 42:02KARA: You missed all the action.
- 42:03DANI: Yeah.
- 42:03KARA: But she arrives at the retreat.
- 42:05And Daphne's like, "I see you don't have your brace anymore. Yay."
- 42:08DANI: Yeah.
- 42:09KARA: "You're, you're healed. Yay."
- 42:11DANI: If I was Regina, I would say, "We're still waiting to hear back
- 42:15from some tests. We'll talk about it on Monday." Don't tell her now.
- 42:19Like, she literally walks up and is like, "I have bad news."
- 42:22What's up with her timing?
- 42:23KARA: Yeah, I, I don't know.
- 42:25I agree.
- 42:26She- Melody and Daphne are like, "Oh, you look disappointed. What's
- 42:29wrong?" And she goes, "The damage is irreparable. I can't sign anymore."
- 42:33DANI: But she doesn't even say that.
- 42:35She says the damage is irreparable, and then she says, "I can't
- 42:39cut hair or paint anymore."
- 42:40KARA: Oh, yeah.
- 42:41DANI: Which doesn't even acknowledge the sign language part.
- 42:43And maybe-
- 42:44KARA: They have to ask.
- 42:44DANI: She's too scared, but Daphne has to go, "What about signing?" And Regina
- 42:48goes, "I'm…" I, I don't even think she outright says, "I can't anymore."
- 42:53Like, she's, like, kind of, like, dodging the question.
- 42:55KARA: She's kind of just like, "If I could, I would."
- 42:58DANI: Yeah.
- 42:59KARA: But she doesn't say, "I can't sign anymore," which
- 43:02would be a painful thing to say.
- 43:03DANI: It is a painful thing to say, but I do feel like she
- 43:05needs to be more forthcoming.
- 43:07'Cause the way she frames it, and Melody picks up on this, is,
- 43:10like, she frames it like it's the least important of the three.
- 43:13KARA: Hmm.
- 43:14DANI: At least that's, was my sort of read on it.
- 43:16It- I don't think that's how she feels.
- 43:18KARA: No, not at all.
- 43:19DANI: But I think she's just doing, like, a bad job communicating about it.
- 43:22KARA: Right.
- 43:23DANI: Her feelings about it.
- 43:24KARA: Well, Daphne catches on.
- 43:25And she walks off.
- 43:26DANI: Yeah.
- 43:27She's so upset.
- 43:29Of course.
- 43:29KARA: Understandably.
- 43:30And Melody's also furious.
- 43:31DANI: Yeah, and then Melody kind of serves as a stand-in for our feelings.
- 43:35KARA: Yeah, she goes, "You're joking."
- 43:37DANI: She's like, "I've just never heard of this happening
- 43:40to literally anybody else."
- 43:42KARA: Yeah.
- 43:43Have you, why don't you just use your other hand?
- 43:45DANI: Yeah.
- 43:46KARA: Great question.
- 43:47DANI: And then she's like, "Why would I fake this?" And Melody's like, "I don't
- 43:50know, your life's been pretty hard lately.
- 43:52Maybe you're looking for some sympathy." And it's like, yeah, I-
- 43:55KARA: She says, "Maybe you want sympathy or attention."
- 43:58DANI: I just feel like, I don't know.
- 44:02I'm thinking of the Regina who did not teach Daphne sign language
- 44:07until, what, she was eight?
- 44:09KARA: Yeah.
- 44:09DANI: I'm thinking of the dark years.
- 44:11Like, I'm just thinking, yeah, I don't know.
- 44:13KARA: Yeah, and Regina goes, "I would never do something
- 44:16like that." I don't know, girl.
- 44:17DANI: It's like, yeah, this choice by the show to handle it
- 44:20in this way is sort of character assassination for Regina, I think.
- 44:24KARA: It's, yeah.
- 44:24DANI: Even if it's, like, true, I mean, it is true, obviously
- 44:27in the show, like, we know-
- 44:29KARA: We know the actor can't sign.
- 44:30DANI: We know the, no, we know the actor can't sign, but we also know that
- 44:33Regina's not faking it for attention.
- 44:35KARA: Yes.
- 44:36DANI: But I just feel like it does such a disservice to her character.
- 44:42KARA: I agree.
- 44:43DANI: And she wasn't really signing that much before.
- 44:45KARA: No.
- 44:46DANI: And it- Melody's like, "You can't even sign a little?"
- 44:50And, like, that's where I agree.
- 44:51There are a lot of signs that require very little hand motion.
- 44:57KARA: Or specifically wrist motion.
- 44:58DANI: Yeah.
- 44:59KARA: You can move the elbow but not the wrist.
- 45:00DANI: Exactly.
- 45:02KARA: I'm confused.
- 45:03Can you have the wrist brace on and sign?
- 45:05DANI: Yeah.
- 45:06KARA: Can you ice after?
- 45:07I don't… Anyone listening, if you have osteonecrosis in your wrist, let me know.
- 45:12Tell me if you can sign.
- 45:13DANI: Yeah.
- 45:14KARA: Do you have it in both wrists at the same time?
- 45:16I looked it up, and apparently it's extremely rare to have it
- 45:19in both wrists at the same time.
- 45:21DANI: Okay.
- 45:22KARA: So you can use one, one hand.
- 45:24DANI: Yeah.
- 45:25I wonder if the tendonitis was in both, so they were like-
- 45:28KARA: That's my guess.
- 45:29DANI: We gotta just say both.
- 45:30KARA: But usually it's your dominant hand.
- 45:33That's the one that does the most movement.
- 45:35Your dominant hand is usually the one that does the most movement when you sign.
- 45:39I just really don't know what to do with this plot.
- 45:41I d- I don't know what to do with this storyline.
- 45:44Like, yeah, it sucks, and what are we gonna do about it?
- 45:47DANI: I guess part of my frustration too is, if my memory serves me,
- 45:51and you know, perhaps it doesn't.
- 45:53I don't feel like they do anything meaningful with this.
- 45:57I don't think that there's a larger conversation that's gonna happen
- 46:01about how to deepen communication between Regina and Daphne.
- 46:06KARA: No.
- 46:06DANI: I think they just leave it at, like, wow, this really sucks.
- 46:08I think they just stop making it, like, a thing to even talk about.
- 46:12KARA: Yeah.
- 46:13It's kind of just like, "I can't sign," and that's the end of that.
- 46:15DANI: Yeah.
- 46:16So that's what's disappointing to me, is I think there could've
- 46:19been a larger effort made.
- 46:21But at least in this episode, what happens is she tells Daphne very
- 46:25poorly, and Daphne is teary-eyed.
- 46:28Katie Leclerc is doing some great cry acting in this episode.
- 46:31KARA: She's a good cry actor.
- 46:32DANI: I was really feeling for her.
- 46:34And she runs off, and Melody yells at her, and Regina's like, "If you think
- 46:38I'm faking this, you are not my friend." But I don't know that we've seen Regina
- 46:42and Melody be friends in a little while.
- 46:44KARA: No, not in a while.
- 46:45DANI: So that sort of tracks, actually.
- 46:47KARA: Yeah.
- 46:47DANI: And then Katie Leclerc- Daphne is sitting in a field.
- 46:53Field?
- 46:53KARA: She's sitting on a bench.
- 46:54DANI: She's sitting on a bench.
- 46:55They're, I don't know, they're at some, like, indiscernible camp situation.
- 46:58Noah approaches from behind and scares her because he's not
- 47:03good yet, but he is apologetic.
- 47:04He said, "I haven't figured that one out yet." Once again, have you
- 47:07spent no time around your uncle?
- 47:09That's very interesting to me.
- 47:11But they, he wants to help.
- 47:13He likes Daphne.
- 47:15KARA: He does.
- 47:15DANI: He likes Daphne.
- 47:16He doesn't like Bay.
- 47:17Bay likes him, he likes Daphne.
- 47:19KARA: Mm.
- 47:19DANI: So we're really returning to our season one roots here.
- 47:22KARA: Love triangle.
- 47:22DANI: Yeah.
- 47:23They said the girls are getting along too well.
- 47:26Let's- let's throw a random man in there.
- 47:29KARA: Two women dueling over a man.
- 47:31DANI: Literally.
- 47:31So he's, like, very poorly signing can I help.
- 47:35Uh, Daphne finds this so charming 'cause we're also back to Daphne's roots,
- 47:38which is that she loves a hearing man.
- 47:40KARA: She does.
- 47:41DANI: And she doesn't know yet that this is a hard of hearing individual.
- 47:44KARA: Maybe the second she finds out-
- 47:45DANI: She's unable to get the ick so far.
- 47:48But trust me, it will probably be coming, just because of the way she tends to feel.
- 47:52KARA: It's true.
- 47:53She does tell him about Regina not being able to sign, and
- 47:57she goes, "You don't get it.
- 47:58You're not Deaf." And Noah's like, "Well, I'm imagining."
- 48:02DANI: Yeah.
- 48:02It's this really powerful scene, I think, because he doesn't do what Bay did.
- 48:07He doesn't make it about himself.
- 48:08KARA: No, he doesn't.
- 48:09DANI: And I was kind of waiting for him to be like, "I'm gonna open up about my
- 48:14struggles," but he just is there to listen to her, which I think is really lovely.
- 48:17Like, she's like, "Can you imagine, imagine your parents never being able to
- 48:22speak to you with their voice ever again?" And, like, he does some great acting.
- 48:27He's just like, "Yeah, I'm imagining it," and, like, he looks really
- 48:30pained, but he doesn't say anything.
- 48:32KARA: Yeah.
- 48:33DANI: And then he gives some great advice back, which is just, you
- 48:38know, it probably is way more painful for her than it is for you.
- 48:43Don't know if that's really true in Regina's case, 'cause I
- 48:45don't really feel that from her.
- 48:47KARA: But it's a nice thing to say.
- 48:48DANI: It's a nice thing to say, and I think it really helps Daphne.
- 48:51KARA: Yeah.
- 48:52That was a sweet scene.
- 48:53DANI: Yeah.
- 48:53KARA: And then Noah goes off and lays on the grass.
- 48:56DANI: Sorry, it kind of had me missing Wilke.
- 48:58KARA: Oh, yeah.
- 48:59DANI: I miss my other blue-eyed blonde-
- 49:01KARA: So maybe you do like-
- 49:02DANI: hearing boy…
- 49:02KARA: maybe you do like blonde men.
- 49:04DANI: Just in the Switched at Birth universe, I guess.
- 49:06KARA: Okay.
- 49:06Sure.
- 49:07Noah then goes off.
- 49:08He's thinking, I guess since he's thinking about his hearing loss again-
- 49:11DANI: Yeah
- 49:12… KARA: he goes to lie down in the grass.
- 49:14DANI: Yeah.
- 49:14KARA: And he puts his earbuds in, and he sings off-key to some
- 49:17music he has on his playlist.
- 49:18DANI: Bay finds him, and he's like, "How'd you find me?" And she's
- 49:21like, "Well, I can hear you, so-
- 49:22KARA: "I'm the only one he- that can hear here.
- 49:24Hear, here.
- 49:25DANI: Where we hear and-
- 49:26KARA: And we're here.
- 49:27Right, exactly.
- 49:28And Noah says, "I'm avoiding everyone.
- 49:31Emmett's giving me the stink eye.
- 49:33Your boyfriend's giving me the stink eye."
- 49:35DANI: Yeah.
- 49:35KARA: And Bay says, "Well, he's not my boyfriend, so jot that down."
- 49:38DANI: "He was."
- 49:39KARA: He was.
- 49:40DANI: Emphasis on the was.
- 49:41She's so interested in him.
- 49:44KARA: She is.
- 49:45And then they share an earbud and listens to some music together.
- 49:49DANI: She does take a moment to tell him that a lot of the deaf
- 49:52people she knows like music.
- 49:54KARA: Yeah, 'cause he was like, "I wanna listen to this playlist and
- 49:56memorize all the songs before I lose my hearing, 'cause I'm not gonna
- 49:59have music in my life anymore." And Bay says, "Well, that's not true.
- 50:02Emmett plays the drums, and he's in my brother's band.
- 50:05He has music in his life.
- 50:06Plenty of Deaf people do."
- 50:08DANI: Yeah.
- 50:09KARA: And this seems to comfort him.
- 50:10DANI: Yeah.
- 50:10Again, this poor boy.
- 50:12KARA: I know.
- 50:13DANI: Where-
- 50:13KARA: Where's the support system?
- 50:14DANI: I guess now he's getting a support system, but, like, where has it been?
- 50:18KARA: Yeah.
- 50:19DANI: It's really sad, so.
- 50:20KARA: Tough time.
- 50:21DANI: Happy for him now.
- 50:22KARA: Yeah.
- 50:23The retreat's done.
- 50:24We're back at Carlton.
- 50:26Uh, Bay and Natalie are itching each other, 'cause
- 50:28they both got- Not each other.
- 50:31Bay.
- 50:31Can you imagine?
- 50:32DANI: Do you remember, did you watch Hannah Montana as a kid?
- 50:35KARA: Yeah.
- 50:35DANI: Do you remember the scene where they all got poison oak from something?
- 50:39They also had to, like, go camping, and then they all had poison oak afterwards,
- 50:43and they were, like, rubbing their backs-
- 50:44KARA: That's right
- 50:45… DANI: up against each other.
- 50:46That's what I just pictured when you said itching each other.
- 50:48KARA: No, they're both itching-
- 50:50DANI: Yeah
- 50:50… KARA: themselves.
- 50:52DANI: Nobody's touching anybody else.
- 50:53Everyone's-
- 50:54KARA: They're both itchy.
- 50:55But Bay offers some, um-
- 50:57DANI: Calamine
- 50:57… KARA: calamine lotion to Natalie, and she's like, "This will help." And Natalie
- 51:00says, "Thanks." And they call a truce.
- 51:01DANI: Yeah.
- 51:02She says, "We should lead by example."
- 51:04KARA: Yeah.
- 51:05DANI: And Natalie says, "Fine. I don't wanna go on any more retreats," so.
- 51:08KARA: And they agree on that.
- 51:09Great, that's done.
- 51:10DANI: Yay.
- 51:11KARA: Daphne goes to the guest house, where she s- sees
- 51:13Regina writing with her wrist.
- 51:15DANI: Yeah, so, I… This is ah-
- 51:18KARA: Use voice-to-text.
- 51:19DANI: Literally, and then, I wonder if that didn't exist in 2013.
- 51:22KARA: Probably.
- 51:23DANI: And then she's like, "I've made a list of things that I could potentially
- 51:27do as a career now that I can't be a stylist anymore, a hair stylist." And-
- 51:32KARA: I wrote this down.
- 51:33DANI: The first one is phlebotomist.
- 51:36Famously something you need to be really good with your hands to do.
- 51:40KARA: And very steady with your hands.
- 51:41DANI: Very steady, and it's going to be repetitive motion.
- 51:45KARA: And Regina goes, "I hate needles and blood, but might be good." She
- 51:49just says to Daphne basically, like, "I'm sad I can't sign, and I need to
- 51:53figure out a new life for myself."
- 51:55DANI: She's like, yeah, she's like, "I've been a hair stylist since I was 19."
- 51:59KARA: 19.
- 52:00DANI: But you know how much the signing means to me.
- 52:04That's all she says.
- 52:05Isn't that fucked?
- 52:06Say nice words to your daughter.
- 52:08Stop with this, "You get what it means to me."
- 52:11KARA: "You know how good of a mother I am. You know how hard I've worked."
- 52:14DANI: You need to say, "This is going to gut me forever."
- 52:18KARA: That's what Daphne needs to hear.
- 52:19DANI: Yeah.
- 52:20I just feel like, once again, it ends with Daphne comforting Regina.
- 52:24KARA: Parentifying her.
- 52:25DANI: It's always Daphne.
- 52:26It's always on Daphne.
- 52:28KARA: No, she's like, "There, there, it's okay that you can't
- 52:30sign to me in the language that I use and need for access." Okay.
- 52:34Love you, Mom.
- 52:35Like, what are we supposed to do with that?
- 52:36I hate it.
- 52:38DANI: I really like your idea of a hand double.
- 52:40I'm really mad that they didn't just do that.
- 52:42It would've been hard
- 52:44KARA: Just get someone who kind of looks like Constance, has similar skin
- 52:47coloring and throw their hand in there.
- 52:49DANI: Yeah.
- 52:50Even a body double from behind.
- 52:52KARA: Yeah.
- 52:53DANI: It would've been fine.
- 52:54I- It would've been better than this
- 52:56… KARA: and maybe it was someone who's Deaf, and maybe they sh- Regina
- 52:59got really good, like overnight.
- 53:01DANI: Oh.
- 53:02KARA: Damn, she's been practicing.
- 53:03DANI: Damn.
- 53:04Yeah.
- 53:05The time in the wrist brace paid off.
- 53:07KARA: Woo.
- 53:08DANI: Woo.
- 53:08All right.
- 53:09KARA: Okay.
- 53:09Last scene.
- 53:10We're at Carlton.
- 53:12Bay runs up to Emmett, and she's like, "Great news.
- 53:14Natalie and I called a truce, and we don't hate each other.
- 53:17Aren't you proud of me?" And he's like, "Yeah.
- 53:20What's going on with us?"
- 53:21And she's like, "Well, if you're talking about Noah, we're just
- 53:25friends." And he's like, "Sure, great, but I hate being jealous, and I, I
- 53:31don't know why we're not together.
- 53:32Like, is it about Simone?
- 53:34I thought you came to Carlton for me."
- 53:36DANI: Mm-hmm.
- 53:37KARA: And she goes, "Well, no, I didn't." And-
- 53:40DANI: Kinda did, dude … she…
- 53:43KARA: I think he was partly the reason.
- 53:44DANI: At least partially.
- 53:44Yeah.
- 53:45KARA: Partially.
- 53:47Yeah.
- 53:47But then she was like, "I can't.
- 53:49I can't do a relationship.
- 53:50I just started a new school.
- 53:51I'm really struggling.
- 53:53I'm underwater.
- 53:54I, I can't do a relationship." I think that's quite mature of her.
- 53:57DANI: I think it is, but I think the underlying thing is she likes Noah.
- 54:03KARA: Yeah.
- 54:03And then she says to Emmett, "Can you just help me as a friend?"
- 54:06And then Emmett says, "I don't wanna be your friend." And then he walks away,
- 54:11and as he walks away, Bay y- shouts his name, "Emmett." Why would you do that?
- 54:16What- It was so s-
- 54:17DANI: What made you do that?
- 54:18KARA: You've known him for over a year now.
- 54:21What?
- 54:21And then, like, sad music plays 'cause then she realizes he
- 54:24can't hear as he's walking away.
- 54:26What?
- 54:26DANI: She's never gonna learn, not fully.
- 54:29KARA: That was such a dramatic ending.
- 54:30That was unnecessary.
- 54:32And that's the end of the episode.
- 54:33Wow.
- 54:34Well, hopefully Bay's attendance at Carlton will be a little bit
- 54:37more pleasant from here on out.
- 54:39DANI: Yeah.
- 54:40KARA: Maybe she gets a newfound respect for Natalie.
- 54:42Toby and Lana, wow.
- 54:44Wow.
- 54:45Interesting.
- 54:46Don't really care about John's, uh, campaign.
- 54:48DANI: No.
- 54:49KARA: What else is happening.
- 54:50I'm really annoyed at Regina.
- 54:52I'm on Daphne's side here this episode.
- 54:54DANI: What's so frustrating is there's not even sides 'cause she's-
- 54:57KARA: No
- 54:57… DANI: not even mad.
- 54:58She doesn't even know that she can be mad.
- 55:01KARA: No, she's just like, "Oh, well, this is my life now."
- 55:04DANI: Yeah.
- 55:04KARA: Like a sad puppy.
- 55:05DANI: She just, like, accepts it.
- 55:07God.
- 55:07Also, where is Angelo?
- 55:09I love that Switched at Birth can only afford to have, like,
- 55:12two guest actors an episode.
- 55:14It's- And so they're like, it can't be Angelo or Nikki.
- 55:16KARA: It's because Gilles Marini was in Dancing With the Stars.
- 55:19DANI: Wow.
- 55:20That's-
- 55:21KARA: I looked it up.
- 55:21DANI: So relevant 'cause I'm vaguely invested in Dancing
- 55:26With the Stars this season.
- 55:26KARA: He had to do filming.
- 55:29He had to do filming for his All Star season of Dancing With the Stars.
- 55:31That's why-
- 55:32DANI: All stars?
- 55:32KARA: He was in one season, then he was in, in the All Star season.
- 55:36DANI: Wow.
- 55:36KARA: Which tracks 'cause he, I think he's a great dancer.
- 55:38DANI: We should find clips of that and post them.
- 55:40KARA: I know.
- 55:41We should.
- 55:42DANI: Oh, he was in our DMs the other day.
- 55:44KARA: Oh, was he?
- 55:45What'd he say?
- 55:45DANI: Well, I was in his DMs.
- 55:47KARA: Yeah.
- 55:48DANI: So I DM'd him.
- 55:49So shout out.
- 55:50KARA: He does comment on our posts.
- 55:51Thank you, Gilles.
- 55:52DANI: Yeah.
- 55:52Thank you.
- 55:53We're huge fans.
- 55:54KARA: We're really big fans of your work.
- 55:56DANI: I'm your biggest fan.
- 55:58So thank you very much.
- 55:59KARA: Yeah.
- 55:59And I hope maybe you listen, and if you don't, maybe you should.
- 56:02DANI: Maybe you should.
- 56:04KARA: Yeah.
- 56:04DANI: 'Cause we have mostly nice things to say about you.
- 56:07KARA: About him, the, the actor as a person, yes.
- 56:09DANI: Yeah.
- 56:10Well, not Angelo, but he needs-
- 56:11KARA: A- not Angelo, but you can't help that.
- 56:13DANI: Yeah.
- 56:13KARA: You play the character.
- 56:14DANI: That's not your fault.
- 56:14KARA: But you personally, you- you sound great.
- 56:17DANI: You played him so well.
- 56:18KARA: And you're beautiful.
- 56:19DANI: Yeah, so beautiful.
- 56:20KARA: I'm so excited for dinner.
- 56:22DANI: Me too.
- 56:22Okay.
- 56:23KARA: Dinner time.
- 56:24Bye, guys.
- 56:25DANI: Bye.
