- October 16 Don't Be Quickly Provoked Topic: Anger. Scripture: Ecclesiastes 7:9 9 Don’t be hasty in your spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools. Context Ecclesiastes pairs patience with humility and warns against carrying anger as a settled companion. The issue is not the existence of emotion but the speed and residence of anger in a person’s inner life. Let It Shape Your Life Some people have a short fuse; others keep the fuse burning for years. Ecclesiastes warns about both speed and residence. Anger may be appropriate when something is wrong, unjust, cruel, or threatening. The problem begins when anger becomes our favorite interpreter. Then every delay feels disrespectful, every disagreement feels personal, and every mistake becomes evidence of bad motives. “Don’t be hasty” creates space between stimulus and response. That space can protect relationships and your own peace. It may mean taking a walk, sleeping before sending the message, naming what you actually feel beneath the anger, or seeking help when rage feels difficult to control. Patience does not erase boundaries or accountability. It simply refuses to let anger become permanent furniture in the heart. You can address the issue without letting the issue own you. Think About It What situation reliably provokes you faster than it should, and what practical pause could help you respond instead of react?
