Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Trump tells Republicans to nuke the filibuster 'Play the TRUMP CARD'
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, now back to the show. The government has
- 0:02Speaker 1: now been shut down for thirty one days, and President
- 0:04Speaker 1: Trump is telling Senate Republicans to use the nuclear option
- 0:08Speaker 1: before SNAP benefits expired tomorrow.
- 0:10Speaker 2: This has more airports are experiencing major delays caused by
- 0:14Speaker 2: staffing issues ahead of the holiday travel season.
- 0:17Speaker 3: Doug Lazader joins US Life from Washington with the latest.
- 0:20Speaker 4: Good morning, Doug, Good morning everyone. President Trump says enough
- 0:23Speaker 4: is enough. It is time to nuke the filibuster and
- 0:26Speaker 4: reopen the government. Here's what he posted last night on
- 0:30Speaker 4: truth Social It's now time for Republicans to play their
- 0:33Speaker 4: Trump card and go for what is called the nuclear option.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Get rid of the filibuster and get rid of it now.
- 0:40Speaker 4: That would allow Senate Republicans to reopen the government on
- 0:43Speaker 4: their own, even though Senate leaders generally don't like the
- 0:46Speaker 4: idea of ending the filibuster, but pressure is mounting. Troops
- 0:50Speaker 4: are getting paid today after the Pentagon shifted some funds around,
- 0:53Speaker 4: but federal SNAP benefits run out this weekend, and we're
- 0:56Speaker 4: already seeing major flight disruptions in places like Orlando and
- 1:00Speaker 4: in Washington.
- 1:02Speaker 5: Look, it could be a disaster. It really could be,
- 1:05Speaker 5: because at that point, you're talking about people have missed
- 1:08Speaker 5: three paychecks, they've missed four paychecks. On what happens when
- 1:11Speaker 5: pilots start not showing up for work because they're so
- 1:14Speaker 5: focused on paying the bills, they can't fly the plane safely.
- 1:17Speaker 5: That's going to lead to massive delays. We want people
- 1:20Speaker 5: to be able to get home for Thanksgiving.
- 1:23Speaker 4: And Delta Airlines joining the calls for Congress to pass
- 1:26Speaker 4: the Republican bills, saying Delta Airlines implores Congress to immediately
- 1:30Speaker 4: pass a clean continuing resolution to reopen the government so
- 1:33Speaker 4: that our air traffic controllers TSA ANDCBP officers charged with
- 1:38Speaker 4: the safety and efficiency of our national airspace can collect
- 1:42Speaker 4: the paychecks they deserve.
- 1:45Speaker 6: They're going to have to go take a second job,
- 1:47Speaker 6: and you're going to have mass issues throughout the airspace.
- 1:50Speaker 6: People will not be able to go from one place
- 1:52Speaker 6: to the other because of the government shutdown, and I
- 1:54Speaker 6: hope Democrats don't take it to that point.
- 1:56Speaker 4: A new Washington Post ABC News poll shows more Americans
- 1:59Speaker 4: blame Republicans for the shutdown, but some here on Capitol
- 2:02Speaker 4: Hill think Democrats are about to cave even even as
- 2:06Speaker 4: they push for expanded Obamacare subsidies. And we'll see. Here
- 2:10Speaker 4: we are on day thirty one of this shutdown. The
- 2:12Speaker 4: record is thirty five days, so this one could become
- 2:15Speaker 4: the longest on record next week.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Brian, Wow, it's getting so close to Thanksgiving two. Thanks
- 2:21Speaker 1: so much, Doug. Hey, let's go over just even this
- 2:23Speaker 1: past week what's taking place, and this is why tempers
- 2:26Speaker 1: are flaring. The Senate rejected the House built for the
- 2:29Speaker 1: thirteenth time, and we only had I think three Democrats
- 2:33Speaker 1: without Rampaul by a Republican vote for it. So you
- 2:36Speaker 1: need five more to get to sixty in order to
- 2:38Speaker 1: get the government queued up again. So on Wednesday, the
- 2:41Speaker 1: Congressional Budget Office reported that this is costing us overall
- 2:44Speaker 1: between seven to seven and fourteen billion dollars. That's what
- 2:47Speaker 1: the presidency is when he gets back, and that's why
- 2:50Speaker 1: he is so upset today. He's trying to rebuild the economy,
- 2:52Speaker 1: put it on jet fuel. And now this happens on Thursday,
- 2:56Speaker 1: the remainder of the federal agencies will miss their first paycheck.
- 2:59Speaker 1: I talked to a group of PEP people the other
- 3:00Speaker 1: day who work as staffers in Washington. They say it's
- 3:04Speaker 1: tough every month just to pay for your rent. Can
- 3:06Speaker 1: you imagine you have no money to pay for anything?
- 3:08Speaker 1: Even a promisory note doesn't really isn't really effective. It's
- 3:12Speaker 1: affecting real people. You talk about the military, they stop
- 3:15Speaker 1: getting paid, But the president has found a donor for
- 3:18Speaker 1: one week and other ways to pay them this week.
- 3:21Speaker 1: So for now the military is getting paid on Saturday.
- 3:24Speaker 1: This is really going to hurt in various states, especially
- 3:27Speaker 1: some states have about seven percent of people on SNAP programs,
- 3:31Speaker 1: that aid program for food and basic staples. You have
- 3:35Speaker 1: now SNAP payments not being issued. The WHIP program will
- 3:39Speaker 1: run out of funding this week, and open enrollments for
- 3:41Speaker 1: ACA begins, and people are looking at it and saying, well,
- 3:44Speaker 1: the Biden subsidies are gone, the pandemic is finished. The
- 3:47Speaker 1: big beautiful bill is queuing in, queuing up. So this
- 3:50Speaker 1: is your chant. These are your new bills for the
- 3:52Speaker 1: upcoming year. Didn't the Democrats say the whole reason for
- 3:56Speaker 1: their walkout was because of the Obamacare set well, people
- 4:01Speaker 1: were already seeing it. But I think the big picture, guys,
- 4:03Speaker 1: is the reason why those prices are going up, the
- 4:06Speaker 1: premiums are going up, is not because of anything. The
- 4:09Speaker 1: Republicans did. It's because Obamacare is not working. The subsidies
- 4:14Speaker 1: during the pandemic put a band aid on a problem
- 4:17Speaker 1: that is now para for everyone to see. I'm not
- 4:19Speaker 1: sure that people are getting that message though.
- 4:22Speaker 6: Well.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Lindsay Graham said that he thinks Democrats will cave next week.
- 4:25Speaker 2: But Hakeem Jeffrey says, you're delusional. We're not. Or he
- 4:28Speaker 2: didn't say that specifically to Lindsay, but they were asking
- 4:30Speaker 2: him when we all fold, and he said he said
- 4:33Speaker 2: that the Republicans are delusional for thinking that Democrats will fold.
- 4:36Speaker 2: They call it a dirty deal, Coldstone liars. President Trump
- 4:40Speaker 2: says this is all about the legendary Trump derangement syndrome.
- 4:44Speaker 2: They just hate him, so they don't want to give
- 4:46Speaker 2: him more.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Well, they're trying to hurt him in the process as well.
- 4:48Speaker 3: But they're hurting the country right now. And when you
- 4:51Speaker 3: talk to people we all know, federal workers that we
- 4:54Speaker 3: know and care about, it's tough for them already. Some
- 4:57Speaker 3: of them live in paycheck to paycheck. Do you really
- 4:59Speaker 3: want some one that's an air traffic controller to have
- 5:02Speaker 3: a second job when they need the focus to navigate
- 5:06Speaker 3: the airwaves. I just don't think it's smart at all.
- 5:09Speaker 3: I do disagree with the president. I think it's a
- 5:11Speaker 3: bad idea to eliminate the filibuster. But I understand that's frustration.
- 5:14Speaker 3: It looks like they're not willing to compromise or have
- 5:17Speaker 3: some type of debate or anything like that. They just
- 5:19Speaker 3: want to hurt him the process.
- 5:20Speaker 1: But I think that what he's saying is, hey, you
- 5:22Speaker 1: did it for judges, but you kept the filibuster for legislation.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Why don't we just do it for shutdowns? And that's
- 5:29Speaker 1: where I think that Mitch mcconnald's not going to go
- 5:31Speaker 1: along with that.
- 5:31Speaker 3: We know that for sure.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Traditional Republicans don't. And also, I mean they want hard
- 5:36Speaker 1: to stop President Biden from blowing up the filibuster. We
- 5:39Speaker 1: would have had two more states, we would have had
- 5:41Speaker 1: a pack Supreme Court and Joe Manchin and Senator Cinema
- 5:46Speaker 1: save the day. So I understand the frustration, but I
- 5:48Speaker 1: don't think that's necessarily a good move. I just think this,
- 5:51Speaker 1: how about this, how about you get in writing the
- 5:53Speaker 1: O ANDB director will not blow up any of the programs.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Number one, how about you get in writing for the
- 5:58Speaker 1: next four weeks they will examine premiums and subsidies for
- 6:02Speaker 1: Obamacare to see if they can fix it, because nobody
- 6:04Speaker 1: wants to see families and I think seventy percent of
- 6:08Speaker 1: from paycheck to paycheck suddenly realize I don't have enough
- 6:11Speaker 1: in my account. So that's something the President has always
- 6:14Speaker 1: had a heart for it.
- 6:15Speaker 3: But they've already Aisley tried to do individual bills. Let's
- 6:18Speaker 3: just fund the military and get them their pay for
- 6:20Speaker 3: the federal workers, let's just fund the snap let's do
- 6:23Speaker 3: these individual things. And they're voting against that as well.
- 6:26Speaker 3: So it's like, I don't know what type of compromise
- 6:30Speaker 3: they're able to reach. If you can't even vote on
- 6:32Speaker 3: the basic essentials.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Well, we won't have an answer until next week for sure,
- 6:38Speaker 2: because they're not in session today. They're home and they
- 6:40Speaker 2: won't be back until Monday.
