Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, I'm Alex Spells, and I own to manage a
- 0:05Speaker 1: couple of real popular cover bands in the San Francisco
- 0:09Speaker 1: Bay Area. Been working for about twenty twenty five years
- 0:13Speaker 1: and mainly just working regionally and putting on good fun shows.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Fantasty and me.
- 0:22Speaker 3: My name is James Durbin. I'm a fifteen year music
- 0:27Speaker 3: business veteran, grizzled young veteran of the music industry, and
- 0:32Speaker 3: I was on Season ten of American Idol, finished fourth place,
- 0:37Speaker 3: got a bunch of records out, a bunch of hits,
- 0:40Speaker 3: a bunch of misses.
- 0:42Speaker 4: And.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Another hit right here with Metal Mouse, and I be
- 0:46Speaker 3: sure not to miss it. So I thank you for
- 0:49Speaker 3: a living and yeah, I love it.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Jessey Jentimer, thanks for joining us today.
- 0:55Speaker 5: Thank you for having us.
- 0:57Speaker 2: No rise it.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Also, we're here today to talk about what could possibly
- 1:01Speaker 4: be the most important and revolutionary brainwashing concept for young
- 1:05Speaker 4: children everywhere, brought to you by the new rock parody
- 1:07Speaker 4: band called Metal Mouse.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Gentlemen, thanks for joining me to talk about it today.
- 1:12Speaker 5: Absolutely, thank you for having us.
- 1:15Speaker 2: You like that one alsewashing?
- 1:22Speaker 4: Blame cleansing is a lot better true true, But I
- 1:25Speaker 4: guess the cold Metal Mouse of rock parody band.
- 1:27Speaker 2: It's actually under selling the concept.
- 1:29Speaker 4: Which is in fact a hard rock, heavy metal band
- 1:31Speaker 4: that reimagines Disney classics in full glam metal style.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Is that a better way to put it?
- 1:37Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:39Speaker 6: Absolutely, I like that version better.
- 1:43Speaker 4: I was sort of coming from from the viewpoint of
- 1:46Speaker 4: being a father myself with a couple of young girls,
- 1:48Speaker 4: and I just can't get to like heavy metals.
- 1:50Speaker 2: So your brainwashing is actually a good thing.
- 1:53Speaker 4: I'm going to make him go to sleep listening to it,
- 1:54Speaker 4: and hopefully you won't have to ground them as much
- 1:56Speaker 4: in the future.
- 1:59Speaker 5: It's the same lyrics she has.
- 2:01Speaker 2: Actually I put it on for her yesterday.
- 2:03Speaker 4: I put the outlet it go on for a while
- 2:04Speaker 4: I was doing to be researching there is actually pricked
- 2:07Speaker 4: up and she came and watched it, which is already amazing.
- 2:11Speaker 6: James mission accomplished. You can put it to bed now,
- 2:19Speaker 6: you know what.
- 2:20Speaker 1: That's amazing to hear because that's our goal. We were
- 2:23Speaker 1: trying to make the connection between heavy and Disney. That's
- 2:26Speaker 1: what we're trying to do because James and I both
- 2:28Speaker 1: love metal, We're both involved in tons of other kinds
- 2:31Speaker 1: of music. But we realized that the Disney songs. In
- 2:36Speaker 1: addition to just being excellently written by great songwriters, the
- 2:40Speaker 1: themes and the chord progressions and everything else just lend
- 2:44Speaker 1: themselves to a heavy architecture.
- 2:48Speaker 4: It's one of those ideas that's so so smacky between
- 2:52Speaker 4: the eyes. Obviously, the people are saying, like, why didn't
- 2:54Speaker 4: I think of that bit? I guess you guys are
- 2:56Speaker 4: more men of action and ones you just talk a
- 2:58Speaker 4: lot and act a little, so go on.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Yeah, well, we definitely talk a lot, but it's we
- 3:05Speaker 3: talk a lot and we are quite in action kind
- 3:09Speaker 3: of all the time.
- 3:10Speaker 5: I already this.
- 3:12Speaker 3: I sing in three of the bands that Alex manages,
- 3:16Speaker 3: and that's goes into account of eight for me, eight
- 3:21Speaker 3: total bands and projects that I lend my voice to.
- 3:25Speaker 3: And yeah, I've been doing a lot of heavy metal
- 3:28Speaker 3: in the last five to six well even longer than that,
- 3:32Speaker 3: eight years. I sang for Quiet Riot for a couple
- 3:34Speaker 3: of years, have put out a couple of heavy metal
- 3:37Speaker 3: albums in the last few years with different projects through
- 3:40Speaker 3: Frontiers Records based in Italy, and so metal has been
- 3:45Speaker 3: seeping through my system. And it's difficult because sometimes there
- 3:50Speaker 3: can be such thing as too much metal a metal overload,
- 3:55Speaker 3: and metal isn't so much widely accepted by everybody, but
- 3:59Speaker 3: here's a perfect way to make it accessible to people.
- 4:02Speaker 3: Songs they already know, mix in you know, modern, not modern,
- 4:07Speaker 3: but classic eighties hair and pop of its day, and
- 4:13Speaker 3: mixed in with this beautiful, just phenomenal arranged music mostly
- 4:19Speaker 3: by Alan Mankman is A is just a it's a blessing,
- 4:23Speaker 3: It's it's it's right there, and we're.
- 4:25Speaker 5: Just it is love.
- 4:27Speaker 4: We saying such an easy concept, but the idea had
- 4:30Speaker 4: to come from somewhere to say where with the scenes
- 4:32Speaker 4: for metal Mouse first signed with you guys.
- 4:36Speaker 6: I'll take that one.
- 4:37Speaker 1: James, we were just we were at a rehearsal for
- 4:43Speaker 1: for our just straight ahead eighties hair metal group thing
- 4:47Speaker 1: that we had, and James and I just started humming
- 4:51Speaker 1: some music like hey, and it always seemed to me
- 4:55Speaker 1: like the theme from Mulan would be like a good
- 4:58Speaker 1: heavy sounding thing, and we we literally I remember, James,
- 5:01Speaker 1: you were slapping on your knee and you were like, well,
- 5:03Speaker 1: I had this idea that.
- 5:07Speaker 6: Jungle Book went along perfectly with the Trooper.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And so it just came out of improvising that way.
- 5:15Speaker 4: Really, the metal pairs everywhere they get to love you
- 5:21Speaker 4: guys like a Friday Night baby shit on it's.
- 5:24Speaker 6: Not real.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Well, and then the payoff is James can can sing anything,
- 5:30Speaker 1: so anything you throw at him, he puts his stamp
- 5:33Speaker 1: on it. But also, uh, pay pays respect to the original,
- 5:36Speaker 1: like in such a great balance.
- 5:39Speaker 6: So I knew. I'm just so excited James.
- 5:42Speaker 1: Hearing you listen list off your all your stuff you've done,
- 5:45Speaker 1: It's just like reminds me how lucky we are to
- 5:48Speaker 1: have you.
- 5:49Speaker 6: In our orbit and how possible this concept is.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Because you do need you need someone who really gets
- 5:55Speaker 1: it and someone who can really fill out those vocal
- 5:59Speaker 1: tracks because they're there's a lot of different stuff.
- 6:01Speaker 6: Going on in the Disney stuff.
- 6:04Speaker 5: It is not easy.
- 6:05Speaker 3: It is very very difficult, even for me, even with
- 6:08Speaker 3: my range. Uh it's hard stuff you know you think
- 6:11Speaker 3: of like uh uh, I want to call her Adele
- 6:15Speaker 3: de Zim like John Travolta did Dina Manzell, the voice
- 6:19Speaker 3: of Elsa from Frozen. I mean she is a monster,
- 6:23Speaker 3: powerhouse singer. If you put some heavy guitars just under
- 6:26Speaker 3: what she does and let it go, there's a song
- 6:28Speaker 3: right there. So me having to then recreate that and
- 6:31Speaker 3: then other things like putting uh, the Little Mermaid mixed
- 6:35Speaker 3: in with like iron made. It is is it seems
- 6:41Speaker 3: easy and concept, but it's not. If you're singing it
- 6:45Speaker 3: like Bruce Dickinson. You know, it's which is the fun
- 6:48Speaker 3: of it. It's really fun to like mix in and
- 6:50Speaker 3: be like Okay, I'm gonna sing this like Rob Halford
- 6:52Speaker 3: or I'm gonna sing this liked O or you know,
- 6:55Speaker 3: and but all like Durban.
- 6:58Speaker 6: You really you really blew me away with all that.
- 7:00Speaker 1: And then when when you came in with the chorus
- 7:03Speaker 1: voices on the Mulan song, there's three other characters who
- 7:08Speaker 1: come in in sequence in quick sequence, so you basically
- 7:12Speaker 1: have to come up with three characters on the fly
- 7:15Speaker 1: just sing those three different voices. And I think Nathan
- 7:17Speaker 1: Lane is one of them, and they're they're like classic
- 7:20Speaker 1: styles that were used to not no I'm thinking of
- 7:23Speaker 1: a Little Murmaid.
- 7:23Speaker 6: But anyway, that.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Just just when you did that just live, I was like,
- 7:29Speaker 1: this guy is meant to do this stuff and you
- 7:32Speaker 1: And the thing is you have the knowledge of the
- 7:35Speaker 1: Disney stuff too, and it's like that we have the climate.
- 7:38Speaker 5: I have shelves full of toys. You know, I love,
- 7:41Speaker 5: I love.
- 7:42Speaker 3: I'm just a big kid, and I have kids, and
- 7:44Speaker 3: my kids love Disney and uh and I do too,
- 7:47Speaker 3: and and hopefully this is a way to get some
- 7:50Speaker 3: cheaper tickets to go to Disneyland.
- 7:55Speaker 4: That's a serious professional music, shouldn't you, James? Like when
- 7:59Speaker 4: you first just how to put yourself into it? Like
- 8:02Speaker 4: how do I have put this?
- 8:03Speaker 2: Like did it sort of feel beneath you? A little bit?
- 8:06Speaker 2: I guess, like singing someone else's songs.
- 8:09Speaker 4: For children, like when you're actually a professional musician somewhere else.
- 8:13Speaker 3: I mean, the way that I look at it is Uh.
- 8:17Speaker 3: I've been singing other people's music since day one. I
- 8:21Speaker 3: started off playing singing karaoke and hosting karaoke and uh.
- 8:25Speaker 3: And then I went to American Idol and I sang
- 8:27Speaker 3: other people's songs, and then I sang for Quiet Riot.
- 8:31Speaker 3: For a couple of years, I was singing other people's songs.
- 8:33Speaker 3: I was singing Kevin Deburrow's songs and Slade and and
- 8:39Speaker 3: then you know, these days, I play in a lot
- 8:41Speaker 3: of cover and tribute bands, and I sing other people's songs.
- 8:43Speaker 3: I sing the hell out of other people's songs and
- 8:46Speaker 3: they enjoy it. And people know those songs because they're
- 8:50Speaker 3: songs that people know and love. And I make a
- 8:52Speaker 3: living singing other people's songs. And I bought a house
- 8:54Speaker 3: singing other people's songs. And this is just the next
- 8:56Speaker 3: step singing. You know, it's it's it's it's eighties, it's nineties,
- 9:02Speaker 3: it's Disney movies. And the thing is like, for for
- 9:05Speaker 3: me and for Alex, I grew up on all these
- 9:10Speaker 3: Disney songs. A big chunk of our audience also grew
- 9:14Speaker 3: up on these Disney songs and now their parents and
- 9:16Speaker 3: they're showing these movies to their kids. But we're not
- 9:19Speaker 3: necessarily like a kid's band.
- 9:21Speaker 5: We can be.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Up until now, we've played in bars and nightclubs and
- 9:27Speaker 3: and you know, conventions and that sort of thing, like
- 9:29Speaker 3: to the direct to the consumer. You know, you're out
- 9:34Speaker 3: having a bunch of beers with friends, You're having a
- 9:36Speaker 3: great night out. You get there early, you see the
- 9:38Speaker 3: opening band, Boom Metal Mouse. You know, you didn't know
- 9:41Speaker 3: what hit you, and all of a sudden you're singing
- 9:43Speaker 3: along to Let It Go with a margarita in your
- 9:47Speaker 3: cocktail dress, you know, holding your shoes so it's it's
- 9:50Speaker 3: it's a perfect mix. You go back, you tell your kids,
- 9:52Speaker 3: you show them the videos. Boom, we got a whole
- 9:54Speaker 3: new pack of fans.
- 9:56Speaker 4: Well, I don't know you guys at all, but from
- 10:00Speaker 4: answer you just got me then Mite, I can already
- 10:02Speaker 4: tell you he's going to be successful because that was
- 10:04Speaker 4: a beautiful answer and from the hot man, that was
- 10:06Speaker 4: really cool.
- 10:07Speaker 5: Thanke it?
- 10:12Speaker 4: So have you prepared yourself to the inevitable Daeta It's
- 10:14Speaker 4: gonna come when a six year old tries to storm
- 10:17Speaker 4: you out to get the words wrong, to let it go?
- 10:22Speaker 3: Uh no, no, And that's completely fine.
- 10:25Speaker 5: It's we make them up on the fly.
- 10:27Speaker 3: The fun thing about forgetting words is all the greatest
- 10:30Speaker 3: singers forget their words. And if you are so so,
- 10:33Speaker 3: so so great and you've got all the songs, you
- 10:35Speaker 3: have a teleprompter, which we're not at yet. We're not
- 10:38Speaker 3: at yet, we're not that yet, so it's it's good
- 10:41Speaker 3: to know the words.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Let it go.
- 10:42Speaker 3: As a weird one I've got I'm high functioning autistic,
- 10:46Speaker 3: so I've got this like weirdo brain that remembers lyrics,
- 10:50Speaker 3: and sometimes I'll just forget the lyrics that I know
- 10:53Speaker 3: embedded into my skull at random times, and I'll be like,
- 10:56Speaker 3: why did I forget that? I know that like the
- 10:58Speaker 3: back of my hand. Hey, what's that?
- 11:01Speaker 5: And so I welcome it. I welcome.
- 11:05Speaker 3: My three year old almost four year old knows more
- 11:07Speaker 3: of the words to let It Go than I do
- 11:09Speaker 3: and can just drop them and she's just like, hada,
- 11:13Speaker 3: But me, I'm you know, I've got to practice.
- 11:15Speaker 5: I study at the at the foot of her learning tree.
- 11:19Speaker 5: You bet.
- 11:20Speaker 4: I can tell you there is no Hasha audience in
- 11:22Speaker 4: the world that a bunch of sixty eight year olds
- 11:25Speaker 4: you think you got this song wrong.
- 11:28Speaker 5: They're moms.
- 11:33Speaker 6: And we want them all to come. They all generations.
- 11:36Speaker 1: And that's one thing we realized about this concept too
- 11:38Speaker 1: when we started running it is it is so g rated,
- 11:42Speaker 1: and that is a good thing.
- 11:43Speaker 6: It's heavy, but it's g rated. It's like the you
- 11:48Speaker 6: really could go play a kid's birthday.
- 11:50Speaker 1: Party, you know, and it would be like totally appropriate.
- 11:54Speaker 1: And one thing we've learned is that everyone loves heavy music.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Every one love of heavy music, Like across the board,
- 12:04Speaker 1: from the little kid up to grandma. You just gotta
- 12:06Speaker 1: package it up right right.
- 12:09Speaker 3: There's a lot of great heavy kids bands out there.
- 12:11Speaker 3: One in particular that I think of it's called Heavysaurus.
- 12:14Speaker 3: They're from Finland, I believe, and uh, they're just big
- 12:17Speaker 3: walking dinosaurs and they play full on heavy metal in
- 12:20Speaker 3: Finnish and and directly to kids, they're the Wiggles, but
- 12:24Speaker 3: they're like monsters, monster dinosaurs.
- 12:27Speaker 6: Need Steve, we need to reach.
- 12:29Speaker 5: Out Heavosaurus Metal Mouse Collab.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Yeah, you sort of touch on this a bit before, Guys,
- 12:42Speaker 4: but White Shoes Disney. So there's a lot of a
- 12:45Speaker 4: lot of great cutters with a lot of great musical
- 12:47Speaker 4: soundtracks out there, So I specifically focus on Disney.
- 12:51Speaker 3: There's not not as many as Disney.
- 12:56Speaker 2: I mean, metal, come on, you go to theies, you.
- 13:01Speaker 5: Go back to the fifties.
- 13:02Speaker 3: I mean, we're not gonna touch some of the riskier material,
- 13:06Speaker 3: but there's you know, we can go back as far
- 13:09Speaker 3: as a zippity dudah, like if we're being real, I
- 13:16Speaker 3: mean every Disney movie that there's been, and there's been
- 13:18Speaker 3: one a year two years since you know, the sixties.
- 13:21Speaker 5: We can pick anything. You know, that's just.
- 13:25Speaker 3: Especially when you get especially when you get to the
- 13:27Speaker 3: nineties and you've got Little Mermaid and Beauty and the
- 13:30Speaker 3: Beast and Aladdin and and that's just like three of them.
- 13:35Speaker 3: And then you got Hercules, and then you got tars In,
- 13:37Speaker 3: you got Moulan. Like it just keeps going and going,
- 13:40Speaker 3: and we're picking one song from each of them. You know,
- 13:43Speaker 3: we could dip even further and do more and do more.
- 13:46Speaker 1: And we've only scratched the surface, barely scratched the surface.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Yeah, but it's also seeing what songs they you know,
- 13:57Speaker 3: blend with what heavy metal songs we can pull in,
- 13:59Speaker 3: what something that's catchy to the ear that people are
- 14:03Speaker 3: going to hear and they're gonna be like, oh, are
- 14:05Speaker 3: they playing Megadeth more?
- 14:08Speaker 5: And then it launches.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Into uh, you've got a friend in me from Toy Story,
- 14:13Speaker 3: you know, like is that Megan?
- 14:15Speaker 5: No, No, it's not.
- 14:16Speaker 4: That's Picks true toy Story. So how have you seen
- 14:19Speaker 4: you that one?
- 14:21Speaker 3: Disney's Pixar. We're not we're not talking Brave. Brave was
- 14:26Speaker 3: just Pixar.
- 14:27Speaker 2: So you know you have you haven't actually like get
- 14:33Speaker 2: permission from Gibsney to do something.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Others we are operating under a thing called nominative fair use.
- 14:43Speaker 1: And yes I got that from my lawyer because The
- 14:45Speaker 1: first thing we had to do when we worked up
- 14:47Speaker 1: four or five of these songs and started trying them
- 14:50Speaker 1: out live, was like, okay, now, what are we going to.
- 14:53Speaker 6: Get shut down? So we had to get a lawyer,
- 14:57Speaker 6: and copyright.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Lawyer in la Keia Camera his name, and he's like,
- 15:01Speaker 1: I look at his resume, he's like definitely a big
- 15:03Speaker 1: shot guy. But spent exactly thirty minutes with me and
- 15:08Speaker 1: just said, you guys are good.
- 15:09Speaker 6: You're fine as long.
- 15:10Speaker 1: As you don't use Disney in the name of the act,
- 15:13Speaker 1: like the Disney Nuts or whatever. You can actually use
- 15:18Speaker 1: Disney in the description, but not in the name, and
- 15:23Speaker 1: you know, steering clear of really dead on like trade
- 15:28Speaker 1: visual trademarks. So you know, if all the guys were
- 15:31Speaker 1: dressed as the current Disney, the current Mickey Mouse, you know,
- 15:35Speaker 1: with his yellow gloves or James you can, I forget
- 15:38Speaker 1: what the difference is, but so right now.
- 15:42Speaker 6: Yeah yellow boots.
- 15:43Speaker 1: So right now, the guys are just vaguely characters from
- 15:47Speaker 1: some Disney things, but also his you know, historical characters,
- 15:50Speaker 1: so they're not ones that like Disney directly owns.
- 15:55Speaker 6: So so yeah, they haven't tracked this down yet. But
- 15:57Speaker 6: he also this lawyer guy else. You said, you get
- 16:01Speaker 6: their attention, you're winning. You know.
- 16:05Speaker 1: That means you're winning. So maybe don't worry about it
- 16:09Speaker 1: too much, you know.
- 16:11Speaker 4: So what the actual selection criteria for toughening out these
- 16:18Speaker 4: Disney songs? Like I can picture a group of six
- 16:20Speaker 4: eight year olds being locked in a room while being
- 16:23Speaker 4: subjected to demos.
- 16:24Speaker 2: He's a great idea, but somehow, and I think it
- 16:26Speaker 2: would work in reality.
- 16:28Speaker 3: We just take them out live. Yeah, we we we
- 16:32Speaker 3: figure them out. We take hits, We take the biggest hits.
- 16:36Speaker 3: Everybody knows the Disney hits. And then we pull in
- 16:39Speaker 3: you know Van Halen's biggest hits, and we mix those in,
- 16:43Speaker 3: or we pull in you know, Iron Maiden's biggest hits, we.
- 16:45Speaker 5: Mix those in.
- 16:46Speaker 3: Luckily, we have a really phenomenal band, especially our guitar player,
- 16:51Speaker 3: Josh Is Josh kraft Is. He's he's a crafty one.
- 16:56Speaker 3: It's it's in the name, but it's with a K,
- 16:58Speaker 3: so it's his own. It's distinctly Joshy Kraft.
- 17:02Speaker 5: Uh.
- 17:03Speaker 3: We were playing our let It Go Uh, mixed in
- 17:09Speaker 3: with bon Jovi's Runaway and mixed in with Don't Stop
- 17:12Speaker 3: Believing and he's also throwing in sweet chow to mine
- 17:16Speaker 3: on the fly, just writing parts on the fly at
- 17:19Speaker 3: a sold out show on our grand finale, and it's
- 17:23Speaker 3: it's just it works so well because of the team
- 17:26Speaker 3: that we have and the musicians that we have, and
- 17:29Speaker 3: everybody is highly capable musicians. Our keyboard player Greg Goose
- 17:35Speaker 3: is phenomenal again picking up parts on the fly, and
- 17:40Speaker 3: and and and Dan a k a tug on the
- 17:43Speaker 3: base and uh and and and and and Kirk on
- 17:48Speaker 3: the drums, And it's just it's a it's a phenomenal
- 17:52Speaker 3: just a phenomenal group.
- 17:53Speaker 1: It's just very everyone gets the assignment. Yeah, and then
- 17:58Speaker 1: they bring things to the table. Yeah, without being asked.
- 18:01Speaker 5: They provide I like you, Clay East of the way.
- 18:05Speaker 4: It ended in as well when you forgot their names,
- 18:07Speaker 4: he wrote Andy out a few times.
- 18:09Speaker 2: Well you were thinking to stole off. Very well done,
- 18:11Speaker 2: very far.

- 18:15Speaker 5: real name.
- 18:16Speaker 3: Call everybody by their their old stage names, which doesn't
- 18:19Speaker 3: compathetic to the.

- 18:48Speaker 1: scene go, you know, like because they have to be
- 18:52Speaker 1: on board with the husband or the boyfriend, like I
- 18:54Speaker 1: want to come see this band. They're like okay, and
- 18:57Speaker 1: they got money, they got jobs, they get you know,
- 18:59Speaker 1: old enough to have a little mone uh. And then
- 19:01Speaker 1: they get to the show and they're like, okay, I
- 19:03Speaker 1: like hard rock music too, like my boyfriend does. And
- 19:06Speaker 1: he's rocking out. But then they hear the Disney part
- 19:09Speaker 1: come in and they're like what and they literally drop
- 19:12Speaker 1: their drinks. And I've seen it happen. I'm out in
- 19:16Speaker 1: the crowd and all these shows, and I'm like, this
- 19:18Speaker 1: is the demo.
