- Welcome to The Sports Hangover Daily, I'm Michael Benatar. Today on the show: the NFL schedule is out and the Patriots might need a therapist after seeing their first month, A.J. Brown to New England is basically a done deal, the Spurs just ended Minnesota's season in ugly fashion, and the Pistons forced a Game seven in Cleveland. Let's get into it. Alright, the twenty twenty-six NFL schedule dropped and there is a LOT to unpack. The season opener is a Super Bowl sixty rematch — Seahawks hosting the Patriots at Lumen Field on September ninth. Seattle defending their title against the team they beat to win it. That's a brutal draw for Drake Maye and New England right out of the gate. And it only gets worse from there. The Patriots' first four opponents have a combined strength of schedule of point seven two one. That is the highest any team has faced in their first four weeks since nineteen eighty-six. That's not a schedule — that's a punishment. New England is walking into a buzzsaw before October even starts. If the A.J. Brown trade goes through — which at this point feels like a formality — at least Maye has a number one receiver to throw to while he's getting baptized. But the schedule makers did NOT do New England any favors. On the flip side, Cleveland's got the easiest schedule in the league at a point four two nine strength of schedule. Whether they can do anything with it is a different conversation. One more note — the league's going to nine international games this year across four continents. Steelers and Saints in Paris. First ever regular season game in France. The Niners are traveling over thirty-eight thousand miles this season — the most any team has ever traveled in a single year. Two international games for San Francisco. That's wild. And the Chiefs get the Monday night opener against Denver, with Mahomes presumably coming back from that torn ACL. The league gave him the latest possible Week one slot to maximize recovery time. Smart move. On the A.J. Brown front — Adam Schefter went on The Pat McAfee Show and basically said it's done. He said Brown knows where his future is headed, and it's just a matter of the Patriots and Eagles processing the trade and finalizing it. Schefter still thinks it'll cost a future first, probably twenty twenty-seven or twenty twenty-eight. And apparently Brown is already talking to condo management in Boston's Seaport district about a place to live. That's not speculation anymore. That's a guy picking out furniture. I love this move for New England. You've got a young quarterback in Maye who needs a true alpha receiver, and Brown is exactly that. He's twenty-eight, still in his prime, and he gives that offense an identity overnight. Quick Colts note — Kenny Moore and the team have mutually agreed to seek a trade. He's entering the last year of his deal. Indy continues to quietly tear things down. Also, Bo Nix is expected to be back on the field in some capacity during the offseason program per Rapoport. Good news for Denver. NBA now. The Spurs closed out the Timberwolves in Minneapolis, one thirty-nine to one oh nine. That's not a closeout game — that's a demolition. Stephon Castle went for thirty-two and eleven in a road elimination game. The kid is twenty-one years old and played like the best player on the floor. De'Aaron Fox added twenty-one and nine assists. Dylan Harper chipped in fifteen off the bench. San Antonio's backcourt is just ridiculous. Anthony Edwards had twenty-four for Minnesota but shot nine for twenty-six. Julius Randle had three points on one for eight. Three points. In an elimination game. At home. That's rough. The Spurs advance to face OKC in the Western Conference Finals starting Monday. And Jalen Williams says he's healthy after missing six games with a hamstring strain. So the Thunder are getting reinforcements at the right time. In Cleveland, the Pistons went on the road and won one fifteen to ninety-four to force a Game seven. Cade Cunningham led the way with twenty-one. Jalen Duren had fifteen and eleven. Detroit had four starters in double figures and got thirty-one combined off the bench. Cleveland just looked flat. And James Harden passed Steph Curry for tenth on the all-time postseason scoring list — cool for the record books but doesn't matter much when your team loses by twenty-one at home. Game seven is Sunday in Detroit. Winner gets the Knicks. Here's my Hangover Take. The Niners traveling over thirty-eight thousand miles this season is being treated like a fun fact, but it's a real competitive disadvantage that nobody's talking about seriously enough. Two international games, a season opener in Australia, and a schedule that has them crisscrossing the globe like a touring rock band. We talk about rest days and recovery and load management in every other sport, but in football we just shrug and say "cool, they get to play in Melbourne." San Francisco already has to fly farther than most just for divisional games. Now add in the jet lag, the time zone chaos, and the wear on a roster that's trying to compete for a Super Bowl. I think this costs them at least one game they'd otherwise win. Maybe two. If the Niners start slow or fade in December, look at the mileage. It matters more than people think. That's your hangover. Go hydrate. I'll see you tomorrow.
