- 1:56Hey, everybody.
- 1:58To stay on the podcast. We have Sierra
- 1:59D g on the show. Welcome to the
- 2:01show, Sierra.
- 2:02Hello.
- 2:04How are you?
- 2:05I'm good. Just got home from work, just
- 2:08hanging out.
- 2:09Nice and hot in Vegas, like, a hundred
- 2:12and 10 out right now. So
- 2:14What is the hot there? Like, is that...
- 2:16It is it a humid hot or, like,
- 2:17a dry hot? What is it? Dry.
- 2:20Okay... We've had, like, a little bit of
- 2:22humidity, like... Leave, but I mean, hot for
- 2:25Vegas can get up to, like, 01:15
- 2:28or so. So it's it's about there right
- 2:31now.
- 2:32Leave So... This might be a really broad
- 2:35basic question, but what is it like living
- 2:38in Las Vegas?
- 2:39Well, I've been here about 8 years now.
- 2:42So it's been a little bit. I'm from
- 2:44Michigan originally, and I went to school in
- 2:46Ohio. So
- 2:48Midwest,
- 2:49now you know, born and raised and then
- 2:51moved out here. I live in Summer, which
- 2:54is actually, like, a suburb of Las Vegas.
- 2:56I mean, by, like, my mailing address in
- 2:59Las Vegas, but over by, like, Red Rock
- 3:01and stuff,
- 3:03it's
- 3:03it's totally normal. I mean, I've lived downtown
- 3:06like, I've lived off of Las Vegas Boulevard
- 3:09to and that's probably the true
- 3:11experience of whatever everybody thinks of.
- 3:15But, yeah. Like, more recently, I've got a
- 3:17condo over in Summer couple years ago. So
- 3:20it's... You know, it's just casual, suburb verbiage.
- 3:24I mean, you got your homeless people and
- 3:27you know, all that stuff, But,
- 3:30not that crazy. Like, I'm barely ever on
- 3:32the strip. So, you know, it's, like, close
- 3:35enough if you want it, but it's far
- 3:37enough but
- 3:38really deal with it if you don't want
- 3:39to. So... Yeah. Can feel like a world
- 3:41away.
- 3:42Do you ever miss the Midwest?
- 3:45I, I... Sometimes, yeah. Like, there's definitely things
- 3:48we don't get here that are, like, the
- 3:51Great Lake. Like, I'm from Michigan and my
- 3:53parents have a house. I'm, like, Michigan and
- 3:55all that. And that's definitely the place to
- 3:57be in the summertime. So it's seriously. You
- 4:00know,
- 4:01Taking a change for the desert and super
- 4:04hot temps and all that out here. So
- 4:07there's some trade off that's for sure, but
- 4:09we don't have bugs. We don't have humidity.
- 4:12And
- 4:14yeah. There's a lot of other things. Like,
- 4:16anywhere that's desirable is like, a 5 hour
- 4:19drive, I feel like, in the Midwest or
- 4:22you're hopping on a plane and going
- 4:242 times zones over. So
- 4:28just this is a lot more accessible out
- 4:30here for a lot of stuff. So I
- 4:32don't know.
- 4:33But I do miss. My family it's all
- 4:35there. And everything. So gonna try to get
- 4:38back pretty soon here. Yeah. You gotta schedule
- 4:40that in the summertime, but you've got a
- 4:42lot going on. I saw you got back
- 4:44into bad water. And Mh. Yeah. So that's
- 4:47that's the main focus right now is training
- 4:50and
- 4:51getting places to train for that. Like, we're
- 4:53in Saint. George last. Weekend, and this weekend,
- 4:56I'm headed out to Lone Pine. Gonna do
- 4:59a big climbing run. I already did the
- 5:01portal fine. So we're gonna do a different
- 5:031 this week again, but and then we're
- 5:05in Colorado next weekend for another race to
- 5:08tune up. So we'll we'll see after all
- 5:11this fun in July, we'll
- 5:14right to head up to Michigan, maybe end
- 5:15of July or August or something. So... What
- 5:18do your parents think about what you do?
- 5:21With your running. Well,
- 5:23you know, my dad's always been a little
- 5:25more,
- 5:26interested and involved, I guess, if you will.
- 5:30He actually went out to bad water last
- 5:32year. So that was... Yeah.
- 5:34He really wanted to go. So I was
- 5:36like, well, you really picked a a big
- 5:38Alt to do your first 1 at had.
- 5:41So I don't know. That was it was
- 5:43cool. Like, my friend came out, and he
- 5:45was you know, he's got to us in
- 5:48lone pine and at the finish to take
- 5:49some pictures because he's a professional photographer, and
- 5:53he kinda just, like, tag going with my
- 5:55dad and they hung out. For the week
- 5:57and that was cool, so we didn't have
- 5:59to just be by himself because... And you
- 6:01might dad thinks. I'm really tough
- 6:04for have you probably a little crazy too
- 6:06with how much I run, but I feel
- 6:08like, you know, I've done a runner for
- 6:10so long? Just not ultra runner that
- 6:13I don't wanna say I'll blame it on
- 6:15him, but, you know, the whole cross country
- 6:17thing in high school that wasn't in.
- 6:19My doing that was, like, my coach and
- 6:21my parents. That were like, come on. You
- 6:23gotta do this, and it's, like, alright, I
- 6:25guess.
- 6:26So fault I got hooked.
- 6:28Yeah. Exactly. But no regrets. I love it.
- 6:31So they're I'm I'm happy.
- 6:33Well, that's interesting that he
- 6:36came to bad water for his first ultra
- 6:38of years to to witness.
- 6:40Because also you got really sick.
- 6:43Yeah. And So I think that I would
- 6:45be scary as a parent to see. Like,
- 6:47oh my gosh. I think I just be
- 6:48like, come just come getting the car. Come
- 6:50on.
- 6:51Yeah. No.
- 6:53I definitely... I've had some rough hundreds. I've
- 6:56done, like, 16 at this point, and that
- 6:591 was definitely 1 of the top stuff
- 7:02or fast, I'd say, I mean, everything was
- 7:04going right until it wasn't, You know, I
- 7:06was with the lead pack for the first
- 7:0740 miles with Harvey and Ashley and Simon,
- 7:10and You know, I wasn't cooling properly. I
- 7:13mean, now I can look back at all
- 7:15the mistakes that were made that we're not
- 7:16gonna make this year, but
- 7:18yeah, When things got bad, It was just
- 7:21worse. And then it got a little better,
- 7:23and then I lost, like, almost 20 pounds
- 7:25out there from throwing thrown up. So that
- 7:27was pretty bad. But
- 7:30Wow.
- 7:31Did you... I mean, in 20 pounds that,
- 7:33like, your body probably can't really afford to
- 7:35lose. Like, did you have to go to
- 7:36the hospital after that?
- 7:38Didn't go to the hospital. No. I mean,
- 7:40some people might have, but
- 7:43you know, I mean, you do enough of
- 7:45these. You're, like, okay. As long as I'm
- 7:47better, like, a a day or 2, like,
- 7:49I shouldn't need, you know, I mean, the
- 7:51day of, in the day after it's kind
- 7:53of hard to judge, but everything kinda of
- 7:56subsided after that. And... No. I mean, the
- 7:59few stopped and, they will start eating again
- 8:02and drinking, so that's the important thing.
- 8:05You know, if I was in danger, I
- 8:08feel like I would have but you got
- 8:10your crew with you and you're... You're not,
- 8:12like, off the grid. So I mean, I
- 8:15needed medical attention and it was there. You
- 8:17know? Yeah. So
- 8:20what about
- 8:21bad water... Like,
- 8:23how do you wanna go back
- 8:26to a place where you suffered so severely.
- 8:29And I know you said, like, Oh, we're
- 8:31gonna fix all the things that Mh. We
- 8:34didn't do right. But does it scare you
- 8:36a little bit to know that that suffering
- 8:38is out there?
- 8:40I mean, of course. Like, I've... Like I
- 8:42said, this isn't my first rodeo. Like I've
- 8:44had a couple suffer fast at this point.
- 8:47But I think that's how you get better
- 8:49at these hundreds. I mean, it's not, like,
- 8:51the shorter stuff where it's all calculated, and,
- 8:54you know, you can be like while I
- 8:55did this on this training run and this
- 8:57on that. Like, you do all that. But
- 8:59with the hundred Mile, there's just so many
- 9:00other factors and how do you, like, deal
- 9:03with the... While challenges and stuff.
- 9:06I mean it makes me want it even
- 9:08more, and... I'd love to win. I mean,
- 9:10that's, like, my goal would be to win
- 9:12the race and, you know, 24 to 28
- 9:16hour would be my Able. But, and, the
- 9:19everything has to go right for that, you
- 9:21know. So
- 9:23Yeah. I mean, I really wanna do it
- 9:25right this time. So I don't have to
- 9:26go back for a little bit. But
- 9:29and then who is your crew gonna be
- 9:31this time? Is it some of the same
- 9:32people, all of the same people?
- 9:35Yeah. So, like, 50 percent will be coming
- 9:37back? So my boyfriend Joe, and my John
- 9:40Will,
- 9:42we've actually... We've ran, like, 80 miles and
- 9:44a hundred before together. So, like, before he
- 9:47ever accrued me, he was, like, a really
- 9:49good, you know, running buddy,
- 9:52and then my friend Maya will be a
- 9:53new 1, and she's done she's been running
- 9:56under Mile for over 10 years now. She's
- 9:59been doing it forever. And then
- 10:01my friend Megan Ec. I don't know if
- 10:03you know who that is. She just had
- 10:04a phenomenal
- 10:06performance at 6 days in the dome. She
- 10:09ran, like, 526
- 10:10miles, so she's, like, next up behind camille,
- 10:14I think for the world's
- 10:16record. Yeah. Like I'm friends with Camille too,
- 10:18but I'm like, dang, Megan, like, you know,
- 10:20she's a teacher, like, not a full time
- 10:23runner. I mean, I'm not a full time
- 10:24runner either, but I'm like, you're just amazing.
- 10:27You know. So,
- 10:30yeah. Meghan and Maya will be new and
- 10:32the other 2 are veterans, but Meghan's has
- 10:35been out there before. So Maya is really
- 10:37the only, like, bad water virgin, if you
- 10:40will that hasn't crew paste or ran the
- 10:42race or anything. So,
- 10:46Yeah. We should be good. I mean, I'm
- 10:48I'm not too nervous about it. Like, I'm
- 10:50fortunate enough. I have tons of friends that
- 10:52either live nearby or do it. So it
- 10:55wasn't a big deal to fill the slots.
- 10:59Okay. That race you mentioned that your friend
- 11:01Megan did, and she's... Because you said she
- 11:03did what 5 2520
- 11:05miles? Think, 526
- 11:07and Camille was, like, what, like, 05:60.
- 11:10I it, like, 5... What with a 60
- 11:12crazy. I think I I don't know. That...
- 11:15Like don't quote on this. No. Pretty it
- 11:17was 40 or 60 because I... Yeah. I
- 11:20just talked to interviewed her.
- 11:23Well, the the reason I followed up on
- 11:25that is because I'm, like, you know, with
- 11:27the camille thing, they had so... Much P
- 11:29because of the Lulu lim further project. And
- 11:32when you mentioned this race, I'm like, I
- 11:34don't remember saying anything about that. And, like,
- 11:35that's a big deal. Much It is a
- 11:38big deal. I mean, like, Megan Ted's and
- 11:40very
- 11:41standout performances. I mean, I... You know, I've...
- 11:44I'm her friend, So, obviously, I follow, but,
- 11:46like, She's doing big this year too. I
- 11:49mean, she... She she is. Yeah. She ran,
- 11:51like, 2 70 miles at the last man
- 11:54standing earlier this year and beat guy or
- 11:58something... You know, like, she's done some really
- 12:01high mileage,
- 12:0455 or, you know, like, multi day force
- 12:07things where... In this, you know, I'm not
- 12:10surprised that she did so well at the
- 12:12dome,
- 12:14And it's a Us Atf, race and stuff.
- 12:17So I mean, it's in... I think it's
- 12:19in Milwaukee. So it's
- 12:22I don't know where we're in the Midwest.
- 12:23Right? I I was for a long time.
- 12:26I'm in grocery right now, but I'm from
- 12:27Indiana. Okay. Yeah. So, I mean, I don't
- 12:30know.
- 12:31In a track for 6 days inside. That's
- 12:34just terrible to me. You. I've done a
- 12:36track race outside, but indoors and that was
- 12:39for
- 12:41hundred miles, which is funny. So
- 12:44wow.
- 12:45That's Wild.
- 12:47So
- 12:48you know, you mentioned cross country as as
- 12:50as a high school or and your dad
- 12:51and your coach kinda getting you into it.
- 12:53Mh. But I looked up your ultra.
- 12:56Sign up results and everything, and I saw
- 12:58you run your first ultra in 20 15
- 13:00at 24.
- 13:02Is that... That's the first on ultra sign
- 13:03up that I saw. Is there anything before
- 13:05that? That's accurate. No. That's accurate. Yeah.
- 13:09So that's pretty young 24 to do your
- 13:11first ultra.
- 13:13What was the impetus for that? How did
- 13:16you get into Ultra?
- 13:19Yeah. So,
- 13:21I... Like I said, I grew up in
- 13:23Michigan. I went to school at University at
- 13:26Toledo. So in college, I worked at Dates
- 13:28running shop. Which has a pretty big presence
- 13:31in, like, Ohio. They had like, 4 running
- 13:33stores and they put on the Glass City
- 13:35marathon.
- 13:35So I was working there, and I was
- 13:38on their race, team
- 13:40because they had, like, a door race team,
- 13:42and I don't know. I mean, I... I
- 13:45was looking at... I think it was Woodstock.
- 13:47It's my first and then it was looking
- 13:49at that, and it wasn't gonna be a
- 13:51e queue. And at the time, like, all
- 13:53I realized, like, her about was marathons, and
- 13:55I was, like... And couple more dollars to
- 13:57do the 50 k. It's Like oh. You
- 13:59know, Let's let's try something new. Like, it's
- 14:02a trail raise or whatever. So, yeah. I
- 14:04went and did a
- 14:06It was okay. Like, at the time, I
- 14:07wasn't, like, sold on Alt because it wasn't...
- 14:11People were as into it, especially back then
- 14:14and in Midwest. Is, like, nobody really did
- 14:16that stuff. Like, it was just, like marathons
- 14:19or half marathons. So...
- 14:22Yeah. That that wasn't really what sparked it
- 14:25for me.
- 14:26It... Because if you look, it took a
- 14:27little bit to, like, you know, raise the
- 14:29distance and mh, really get in do it.
- 14:32Like, couple years. So moving out here definitely
- 14:35helped,
- 14:37grow that passion for sure. So 16 hundreds.
- 14:41Yes. Do that I've completed. I've attempted 18.
- 14:44I've finished 16.
- 14:46Okay. Let's dissect those a little bit. What
- 14:48was the hardest?
- 14:51Oh,
- 14:52ma'am,
- 14:53I mean trailer road.
- 14:56What do you like better trailer road? I
- 14:58mean, I'm better at road. I I kinda
- 15:01like the road better because that's, like, you
- 15:03know, my background,
- 15:05but I I do have, like, a soft
- 15:07spot for trails. I mean, they're super pretty.
- 15:10Like, the places that I've been on some
- 15:12of these trails and these hundreds. They're just
- 15:15phenomenal. I mean, like, cascade crest, 100. For...
- 15:18Okay. So for trails,
- 15:20that was probably...
- 15:22Let's say that was probably the hardest.
- 15:24Trail. Cascade hundred.
- 15:26Cass Crest in Washington.
- 15:28Yeah. Okay.
- 15:30And I don't know if that's because it
- 15:31was, like, the first of, like, 3 that
- 15:33I did the summer of 20 22. I
- 15:35had, like, a 2 week gap and between
- 15:38Cascade Crest Angels Crest and lead bill. So
- 15:42That was a little wild.
- 15:44But Washington's
- 15:45trails are just so rugged. Like, and you
- 15:47wouldn't think that and the births not that
- 15:50high, but
- 15:51Yeah. The terrain just super techie. At least
- 15:54from what I'm used to. I mean, we're
- 15:56kind of technical in Nevada, but there's some
- 15:59run stuff too. You, so
- 16:01It's a that for trail, and then for
- 16:04road.
- 16:05I mean, bad water, of course. So the
- 16:07loop stuff's kinda hard too, though. I mean,
- 16:10because you really gotta
- 16:11have a different, like,
- 16:13mental game with that, because, you know, you're
- 16:16just doing, like, the track race. It did,
- 16:18like, over 400 loops around the track. I
- 16:20mean, you can't
- 16:21Yeah. There's no, like, even keeping track at
- 16:24that point, you know? So,
- 16:28I don't know. I think a 24 hour.
- 16:30If I
- 16:32completed a 24 hour on a track because
- 16:34it sol this, I pulled the plug at
- 16:36a hundred miles because I had just done
- 16:38fat box like weeks prior. And as just
- 16:40like, I'm trash. Like, I can't I can't
- 16:43imagine another extra. However, many hours around this
- 16:46track,
- 16:47I think that would be really tough. Like,
- 16:48a 24 hour around a track. Just haven't
- 16:51done the whole time yet. So
- 16:54But, you, if you hadn't have just done
- 16:56the Fat 24 hours.
- 16:59I'm sure you would have completed. Yeah. Yeah.
- 17:01It wasn't a matter of, like, can I
- 17:03do this? It was just like, I had
- 17:05won the hundred, and I got my buckle
- 17:07and everything, And I mean, I I don't
- 17:09wanna sound like, a baby but I'm like,
- 17:12I wanna go to bed, but I wanna
- 17:14lose sleep because I didn't, you know, I
- 17:16didn't take extra time off work or anything
- 17:18either. We just, like, drove down the Phoenix
- 17:20after work on a Friday and had to
- 17:21go back on... I don't know why to
- 17:23do that.
- 17:24I don't know how you do that? So
- 17:26you work full time. You have a normal
- 17:288 to 5 job. What do you do?
- 17:31I'm an account manager for sales. So
- 17:34yeah. I sell electrical
- 17:37distribution equipment
- 17:38for vital electric supplies. So,
- 17:41yeah. It's it's fun. I'm, like, 8 to
- 17:4404:30, Monday through Friday and
- 17:47when I'm not working, I'm usually running or
- 17:49at the gym or
- 17:51doing something of that nature. So This is
- 17:54why we're recording this, 08:30,
- 17:56eastern time, 05:30,
- 17:58Pacific time.
- 18:00Yeah.
- 18:01Would you normally be running right now though?
- 18:03Like, did you carve it out? Or are
- 18:04you gonna go run after this?
- 18:06No.
- 18:07I was supposed to do a double today,
- 18:09but I did a double. Yes. Screwed instead.
- 18:11So I I planned ahead when I got
- 18:12your email. I was like, we'll just do
- 18:14it I mean, I can flip flop. It's
- 18:16it's not big deal. As long as the
- 18:18mileage just getting in Don't care whether it's
- 18:20Wednesday or Thursday,
- 18:22whatever.
- 18:25Friends, if you are looking to up your
- 18:27game with your training, You gotta focus on
- 18:30your recovery, and I am telling you the
- 18:32lagoon pillow is unmatched. This is the best
- 18:36pillow you could ever imagine that you could
- 18:38lay your head on.
- 18:40They send you the filling and you fill
- 18:41it up as little or as much as
- 18:44you want, and it just settles in just
- 18:47right. I'm telling you these pillows are amazing.
- 18:50I have the fox.
- 18:51My husband has the otter, and we both
- 18:53love them. So much. You take a 2
- 18:55minute sleep quiz and you get lined up
- 18:57with the pillow of your dreams. The pillow
- 18:59of your dreams. I just made that. It
- 19:01works.
- 19:02Go to lagoon sleep dot com slash lindsay
- 19:05and use the code lindsay LANDSEY
- 19:08for
- 19:0915 percent off your order with Lagoon. That's
- 19:12lagoon sleep dot com slash lindsay and use
- 19:14the code lindsay.
- 19:20I saw that you
- 19:22recently ish started working with a coach?
- 19:25Yeah. So I
- 19:28I heard my first coach for Jackpot.
- 19:32I had Connor,
- 19:34Camille husband been coaching me, so we did
- 19:36a little bit together and... Okay.
- 19:39You know, I I basically bought a plan
- 19:41from those guys, so it wasn't, like, a
- 19:43very, like, 1 on 1 sort of thing.
- 19:46So
- 19:46I I don't know I Maybe didn't from
- 19:49Connor. Yeah. And, I mean, I a degree
- 19:51in exercise science, and I don't really have
- 19:54an accountability problem. Like, I, you know, I've
- 19:57been training myself for years, and I I
- 19:59will do the workouts. Like, I will do
- 20:01the miles. It's just
- 20:03I don't know. I I kind of, like,
- 20:05needed somebody more to talk to, I guess,
- 20:07if you will, and it's nothing against them,
- 20:10and I probably... Like I said, I just
- 20:11bought the wrong plan.
- 20:14So I actually...
- 20:16I I met Anna,
- 20:18my current coach back at H
- 20:21last... Year, because she was coaching Ryan at
- 20:25the time, Montgomery,
- 20:26and I was
- 20:28kind of in the same tent as those
- 20:30guys because I was Korean pacing Rachel North
- 20:33fleet,
- 20:34and that's 1 of Ryan's like best friends.
- 20:36So anyways, I like got
- 20:38in the mix with her, you know, like,
- 20:40watching her coach him and, like, how, you
- 20:42know, speak with him and everything, and we
- 20:45became friends at that point also and, you
- 20:47know,
- 20:48it just...
- 20:49It seems like it was gonna be a
- 20:50good fit, I guess, just with
- 20:52my...
- 20:53I don't... I don't know. Like, my
- 20:56experience
- 20:57seeing her and Ryan and, like, how she
- 20:59is with him and just as a coach.
- 21:02And, you know, I had no problem, like,
- 21:04talking to her on, like, a friendship level
- 21:06and everything too. So
- 21:08I had just hit her up and was
- 21:09like, hey, You know, I I think we
- 21:10could... Try this, and this would be good
- 21:12for us or whatever. And so I... I've
- 21:14been working with her. You seem... Like you
- 21:17said, you don't have a struggle with motivation.
- 21:19Like, you're gonna get done what needs... To
- 21:20get done?
- 21:21And you know what you're doing?
- 21:23So, like, how do you... How does that
- 21:26work with a coaching relationship when like, like
- 21:28You were just sailing, I just did my
- 21:30double yesterday and instead, Like, you know what
- 21:32to do.
- 21:33So how do you handle that relationship?
- 21:37So, yeah. I just...
- 21:39I think that's kind of why I made
- 21:41the switch also. I needed something that was
- 21:43more personalized and, like, tailored to, like, in
- 21:46the moment. Like, what I got with the
- 21:48other guys was, like, okay. Here's your plan.
- 21:51This is gonna go, like, 2 months out.
- 21:53This is your week to week, whatever.
- 21:55And it was just almost more stressful for
- 21:57me to, like, not have that person to
- 22:00kinda, like you know...
- 22:02I guess, go
- 22:04text or whatever the week before and be
- 22:06like, hey. By the way, like, I forgot,
- 22:07like, I wanna do this race as the
- 22:09training runner.
- 22:10I have this other goofy thing that I
- 22:12need to do, You know, like, and with
- 22:14her, it's, like, I just text her and
- 22:17tell her and she'll... U kinda work around
- 22:19it because I'm getting it week by week,
- 22:21You know? So it's not,
- 22:23like, I have to, like,
- 22:25you know, worry about that stuff, and she's
- 22:27been very flexible. Like,
- 22:30I mean,
- 22:31it's it's, like, I don't wanna call it
- 22:33a part. It is a partnership. You know,
- 22:35like, it's not
- 22:36just like, this is what you're doing, and
- 22:38I don't care what you wanna do. Like,
- 22:41it's like, no, like, let's work around what's
- 22:43important to you and, you know, and we've
- 22:46had
- 22:47good,
- 22:47you know, results with that. Like, I... I'm
- 22:50happy with it, and I'm happy working with
- 22:52her, and you know, I can just text
- 22:54or collar or whatever, and that's more so
- 22:56what I, like, needed. I don't know that
- 22:59I needed somebody to just do the programming,
- 23:01you know. So... Totally.
- 23:03Will she be will she be a bath
- 23:05water?
- 23:06She won't know. Because she's a runner too.
- 23:09So she's scattered stuff, and she's in Colorado.
- 23:12So unfortunately, no. But maybe have Lena. We'll
- 23:15see. I I don't know yet. She's not
- 23:17running it. I I don't know if she's
- 23:19running it yet. So maybe look to race
- 23:21each other.
- 23:22That would be funny.
- 23:24So... That would be so funny if you're
- 23:26racing your coach. So
- 23:28Yeah.
- 23:29I mean, it's fine. Like, I'm sure it
- 23:31it be a little but, yeah, Like, you
- 23:34know, it's just like anything else like,
- 23:36I raised other friends. I I'm too, and
- 23:39it's just friendly
- 23:40competition.
- 23:42Yeah.
- 23:43So you... I saw you jumped into a
- 23:45half and ran, like, 01:21,
- 23:48and
- 23:49I'm so curious. Like...
- 23:52You run hundred mile plus distances.
- 23:55And I know obviously, you weren't training for
- 23:58that 01:21. Just like, okay. What can I
- 24:00do here?
- 24:01What does that, like,
- 24:04pain feel like? And what does that even,
- 24:06like, how does a race like that even
- 24:08feel? It's such a small...
- 24:10Blip for what... From what you're used to.
- 24:13Oh, man. That 1 that I did that
- 24:16you're talking about the rock and roll. That
- 24:18was, like, not even a week before Jackpot
- 24:2120 23.
- 24:23And, honestly,
- 24:24I didn't have a coach at that point,
- 24:26and it was funny because, like, I didn't
- 24:28really think it through. I was like, oh,
- 24:30you know, it's, like, just the speed out.
- 24:32We're gonna do on Sunday night and they
- 24:34were... Gonna run a hundred miles on Friday,
- 24:36and, you know, it wasn't really well planned.
- 24:38I he was executed, but, like,
- 24:41I was pretty gonna sore and struggling. For,
- 24:45like, a day or 2 after that race.
- 24:46And because I heard like
- 24:48the best half for me. That was a
- 24:50P. So
- 24:52the turnover.
- 24:54Yeah.
- 24:55So I don't know. It it worked out.
- 24:57Like, I had APR at the hundred and
- 24:582, so that was great. But
- 25:01this year, we tried it again, and it
- 25:03was, like, the opposite. It was the hundred
- 25:06had moved up a week.
- 25:07So I did jackpot, and then I did
- 25:10the half
- 25:11a week later, and I think my time
- 25:13was, like, a 01:28.
- 25:15And I tell like of you. Oh,
- 25:18it was bad. Like, I feel like I
- 25:20totally screw myself on recovery. Just... From Jack.
- 25:24That I didn't give myself a recovery. So
- 25:26we're never doing that again. That's... We're gonna
- 25:28pick a half. That's just not a week
- 25:31apart.
- 25:33So So
- 25:35before a week after...
- 25:36Like, for me, running a half is no
- 25:39big deal. It's, like, well, I just have
- 25:41to work hard for, like, less than an
- 25:43hour and a half. It's not like, okay.
- 25:45You gotta work hard for, like, 16 hours,
- 25:48Do you know? So
- 25:49full different.
- 25:51It hurts different too that it does hurt.
- 25:53Mh. Yeah. Yeah. Propensity of pat that hour
- 25:57and a half or hour half or whatever.
- 25:59It's like... I don't love. That's for sure.
- 26:02Yeah.
- 26:03How do you decide
- 26:05which
- 26:07races to do in this ultra space.
- 26:10The last 2 years, I've been more focusing
- 26:13on, like, what I'm... The best at, not
- 26:16so much what I'm gonna have the most
- 26:18fun at or, you know, whatever.
- 26:22Because I found the loop courses in the
- 26:24road stuff. I'm
- 26:25far more competitive than, you know, I've won
- 26:29some trail. Like I'm not gonna say I'm,
- 26:31like, garbage on the trails because I'm not,
- 26:33But I'm definitely stronger suited on the road
- 26:35stuff because that's just my background.
- 26:37And I'm clumsy, like,
- 26:39you know? So
- 26:42yeah. The last 2 years, My... I mean,
- 26:44bad water's, like, the chip on my shoulder
- 26:46where it's like that. Was, like, the goal
- 26:48race of the year. I mean, I would
- 26:50have loved to have P at Jackpot, but
- 26:52that's behind us. You know,
- 26:55it and now we're just really focusing on
- 26:57that. And
- 26:59H,
- 27:00that's another 1. I need a redemption race
- 27:03at because I didn't do so great at
- 27:04a hundred k a couple years ago, I
- 27:06got sick at that 1 too. So I'm
- 27:08gonna try to go big at that 1
- 27:11also. But
- 27:12I don't know. I mean you have got
- 27:14in October.
- 27:15Mh. Yeah. I mean, Try to go for...
- 27:18I am doing the hundred. Yeah.
- 27:20I'd love to try to be in contention
- 27:22for a ticket, like, a golden ticket, that'd
- 27:24be awesome. But like I said, the day
- 27:26just has to kinda, you know, has go
- 27:29well and
- 27:31yeah. I don't know. I mean,
- 27:33I'm not trying to put too much on
- 27:36the calendar because I have, like, this thought
- 27:38of maybe sliding 1 more in, but it's
- 27:41like, no. Like, we're just gonna,
- 27:43you know, scale back a little bit because
- 27:46last year, I just felt the fatigue big
- 27:48time at the end of the year, so
- 27:51I kinda wanna respect these races a little
- 27:54more.
- 27:55And
- 27:56I'm sure, probably at least 50 percent, maybe
- 27:5980 percent of the people listening know what
- 28:00you mean when you say golden ticket, but
- 28:02you're talking about Western states.
- 28:04Yeah.
- 28:05Yeah.
- 28:06Well, I'm like, in case you, you know?
- 28:08Because, like, I do lean towards marathon. No.
- 28:10I know. Under sorry.
- 28:12No. Don't be sorry. I'm just like, I
- 28:14should clarify in case someone's
- 28:16new to, like, the ultra scene.
- 28:18Because I was gonna ask you that too,
- 28:19though, like, is Western states. On your bucket
- 28:22list.
- 28:23Yeah.
- 28:25I think it is on my list.
- 28:28Hard rock is also on my bucket list
- 28:30but maybe a little higher than Western states,
- 28:33but I think it's more like, the ticket
- 28:36chase would be more of a...
- 28:38Accomplishment it, obviously, in my opinion, like, you
- 28:41know, I I obviously, being at Western would
- 28:43be amazing, but
- 28:46Otherwise, it's just gonna take me, like, 6
- 28:47years, like, everyone else, you know.
- 28:51You're... Yeah. You're saying to get in with
- 28:53the ticket. Like, getting that... With the ticket
- 28:55you get in sooner. Yeah. Without, I'm just
- 28:58gonna have to keep running these hundred cool...
- 29:00Or, like, the ticket qualifying races, which
- 29:04Yeah.
- 29:05This year, mine would be.
- 29:07I mean, I've I've been trying to qualify
- 29:10since maybe 29.
- 29:1318. I I remember at this point.
- 29:16So but the golden ticket races,
- 29:20you
- 29:21corrects me if I'm wrong. You have to
- 29:22get top 2 at these golden ticket races?
- 29:25It varies.
- 29:26So have had stop 2. Okay. Some of
- 29:29them though 3 deep. So, like, I think
- 29:31Black Canyon goes 3 deep. But it's cool
- 29:33because Ara has 2 of those races, and
- 29:36I'm actually on the Air race team also.
- 29:38So that's exciting.
- 29:41Mh.
- 29:42Are you gonna be paying attention there with
- 29:44western states this weekend?
- 29:46Yeah. Yeah. I know I have a couple
- 29:48friends that are running it, so I was
- 29:50text them all today and I was like,
- 29:51oh, I'm rooting for you. Blah blah. Like,
- 29:54I sent Emily H text and Ryan Montgomery
- 29:57and them,
- 29:59Emily so nice. I love Emily. And she
- 30:01goes... She's been top time a couple years
- 30:03now, so she's a phenomenal runner. I met
- 30:05her at I am tough. Back in 20
- 30:0820.
- 30:09She crushed that race, and she'd beat, like,
- 30:13a lot of the boys too. It was
- 30:14funny. Because she was, like, in front for
- 30:16a while and the guys were like, who
- 30:17is this? And, like, what are they doing?
- 30:20So
- 30:22she's super cool. But
- 30:24Yeah. I'll I'll be following. I'll get my
- 30:26work workout in, and then I'll be able
- 30:27to focus. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You got time.
- 30:31Will, this episode will obviously come out. After
- 30:33Western states. But
- 30:36I have a... We have a new podcast
- 30:37in my network called the Trail Network podcast
- 30:39and so Rachel Drake and Leah Ying lane
- 30:42are both hosts on that podcast and they're
- 30:45running this weekend. So I'm gonna be excited
- 30:47to to track them. Yeah.
- 30:49They're great.
- 30:50Yeah. Be fun.
- 30:52Okay. So we'll probably air this. I guess
- 30:54it'll be closer to when you're going to
- 30:57bad water. I mean, where you're, like, a
- 30:58month away.
- 31:00Mh.
- 31:01Yeah. No. It's coming up. Most of us
- 31:03marathon, like, we do, like, a typical 2
- 31:05week, maybe 3 week tape, Like, what does
- 31:07your life look like? The 3 weeks leading
- 31:09up to a bad water? And, like, what
- 31:11are you entering those 3 weeks at as
- 31:13far as like, how many miles a week
- 31:15are you running and whatnot?
- 31:18Well, I mean, I can't really tell you
- 31:19that far out. So I don't have my
- 31:21schedule yet, but,
- 31:23typically,
- 31:24like, this Sunday, for example, will be...
- 31:27I mean, at this point, what's the date
- 31:29today? Today, but it's at the end of
- 31:31the month. So we're less than a month
- 31:33out. Is start of the 20 second... Yeah.
- 31:36So, like, for example, this weekend, I have,
- 31:38like, speed work, probably, like, 15, 60 miles
- 31:41on Saturday, and then I have 30 Mile
- 31:43on Sunday,
- 31:44and then next week, and I'll probably have
- 31:46a hundred miles for the week and the
- 31:48next week, I'll probably have another hundred mile
- 31:50week, and I have a 50 k on
- 31:52Saturday.
- 31:53I have no idea what I'm gonna do
- 31:54on Sunday But, I mean, I would think
- 31:57maybe after that, we might...
- 32:00I don't know if she'll have me taper
- 32:01a week or too early. It depends. Like,
- 32:04definitely the week of, but, like,
- 32:06maybe for me tapering, though would be maybe,
- 32:09like, a 80 mile week,
- 32:12Mh 2 weeks out? Is that still, like,
- 32:14a lot less volume than what I'm used
- 32:16to doing, but I get, like, restless. I
- 32:19don't know. I was Wondering.
- 32:21You get a little antsy.
- 32:22Yeah. I mean, I just feel like I'm
- 32:24not doing enough. You know? You're like, no
- 32:26I do with all this free time on
- 32:27my hands like...
- 32:29What do you do?
- 32:31Other than Run and eat and sleep things
- 32:34it'll work.
- 32:35You know, I
- 32:37I like to hike. I like to do
- 32:38anything outdoors. Really, you know,
- 32:41I like to... Well, in the summertime in
- 32:43Vegas, I like to go the pool, so
- 32:45I like to do that.
- 32:48You know, we usually just relax the for
- 32:50not running, we'll, like, lay down, watch a
- 32:53movie or something.
- 32:55And yeah, I'm really not that exciting.
- 32:59What does your boyfriend run a lot? Is
- 33:00he, like an ultra runner as well?
- 33:02Yeah. He did Western states last year, actually.
- 33:06He got him... It was his... Oh, Jeez.
- 33:09Wasn't his second hunter mile. Was his second...
- 33:11Under me. He got in. Like, right away.
- 33:14Yeah. But did we get in with a
- 33:16plan ticket, how did he get in? No.
- 33:19He he had ran hurt 100 was his
- 33:21first hundred, which is, like, a really hard
- 33:231, and then he did Castle peek, so
- 33:26he had done 2 qualifier.
- 33:28And then he got in
- 33:30with, like, yeah, Like, 2 years of tickets.
- 33:34And because, like... Okay. They still call at
- 33:37tickets. Because I have Golden it, like, your
- 33:39just watery tickets.
- 33:43So... Yeah. He got in... And he's doing
- 33:44Lead bill this year. So we'll be out
- 33:47at that
- 33:48get like, August,
- 33:50level bill 100. So it's a good 1.
- 33:52I did that 1 in 20 22.
- 33:54It's the fun. So what kind of advice
- 33:56are you giving him for that?
- 33:59Well, I'm just always given them hard time
- 34:01because we have different coaches, and, like, sometimes
- 34:04we'll have... Almost the same workout, but it's,
- 34:07like, different pace of the week. So, like,
- 34:09this week, I'm like, doing hills on Wednesday.
- 34:11And I go, why aren't are you doing
- 34:13Hills? Like, you're ready to let Bill, The
- 34:14whole back half. Is that uphill. Like, I
- 34:16don't know what you're doing. And he's like,
- 34:18no. Like, I gotta go to the mountain
- 34:20and I have speed. So I don't know.
- 34:22I'm not his coach. I don't think he'd
- 34:24let me coach him. So
- 34:26that's fine. I used to coach actually. I
- 34:29I coach Cross country.
- 34:31When I was college, so that was fun.
- 34:33Mh.
- 34:34Like, high school kids?
- 34:36Yeah. I posted at Not dame Academy
- 34:39in Toledo, Ohio. So... Okay. Mh. What was
- 34:43your favorite part about doing that?
- 34:47I he just really, like, rewarding, you know?
- 34:49I mean, all these girls like, look up
- 34:51to you. We have, like, a team of,
- 34:52like, 40 girls, and You know, some days,
- 34:55I was, like, the only 1 in charge.
- 34:57And for me, it's, like, I'm not a
- 34:59school teacher. So, you know, it's a little
- 35:01scary at times. So
- 35:04so people.
- 35:05Yeah. It even, like their parents. Like, their
- 35:08parents were just so, like, thankful for, you
- 35:11know, like, experience that you're, like, offering their
- 35:13kids, and they just... You know, it's just
- 35:16a really good bang.
- 35:18And then you're just helping them I mean,
- 35:21I was... I think it was, like, 21
- 35:23at the time. So it wasn't fat much
- 35:24older than they were. Like, sometimes I go
- 35:26to, like, the school. So we'd be like,
- 35:28oh what what great are you in? And
- 35:30they're like, no. No. No.
- 35:32So...
- 35:33Yeah. It is fun. I mean, if work
- 35:35allowed for something like that. And be more
- 35:38willing to do it, I'll, but it's just
- 35:40like,
- 35:41I don't know. And I'm... I'm so hyper
- 35:43focused on my own running career at this
- 35:450, you don't have time.
- 35:47It's a sacrifice.
- 35:48Like on Saturdays. When you're going to those
- 35:50meats, you're not getting the long run it.
- 35:52Like, your long long run is... Go over
- 35:54the be and chasing people around all day.
- 35:57So, yeah. It it was it was good.
- 36:00And the lady I coach with we're still
- 36:02really close to. So she was
- 36:04really, we can't to work with. So mh
- 36:07Yeah. You'll have to revisit that when you're
- 36:09not doing hundreds anymore. I mean, I just
- 36:11when I retire.
- 36:14Yeah. Yeah.
- 36:16Just... I mean, honestly, because it just...
- 36:19The amount that you work and such a
- 36:23regular schedule.
- 36:24You know what I mean? Because a lot
- 36:25of people
- 36:28do this, like, balance with work and and
- 36:30running lots of miles, but you have, like,
- 36:32hours you have to be.
- 36:34There, which I think would be really difficult.
- 36:37Like, you can't just be like, okay. I'm
- 36:39gonna work a little bit from, like, 5AM
- 36:41to 9. And then I'm gonna go for
- 36:43my run, and then... You know what I
- 36:44mean? Like, sounds like you a pretty
- 36:47regiment
- 36:48work time.
- 36:50Yeah. And, I mean, I've had it that
- 36:52way for years now. You know? I mean,
- 36:54it's better now than ever. I used to
- 36:56work for Tesla, and
- 36:58they would just change my schedule all the
- 37:00time. And when I say all the time,
- 37:01it was, like, you got 5 eights and
- 37:04then, like, a month later or you got
- 37:054 tens, and it's these random days. So,
- 37:08like, we're gonna change your workday days completely.
- 37:11And then there was, like, some years where
- 37:13it was, like, a different time a day
- 37:15every day of the week, different each week,
- 37:18and it was just, like, oh my gosh.
- 37:20Like, how does anybody have a normal,
- 37:22life or running schedule or anything with these
- 37:25things. So now I'm like, super thankful that
- 37:28I'm back to, like, regular
- 37:30at least it's like, I know what to
- 37:32expect. I mean...
- 37:33Yeah. There's no surprises. So
- 37:37in Tesla would work you over time a
- 37:39ton too at, like, end of quarter. Like,
- 37:42I think Jackpot 20 20,
- 37:44I... They weren't giving me any extra days
- 37:46off. So I had to work till 7
- 37:49or 8PM, the night before the race. Oh,
- 37:51my goodness. And then
- 37:53I had to go home, like, go to
- 37:54bed and everything. And then I ran the
- 37:56race. Luckily, I got done in, like, under
- 37:5916 hours.
- 38:00And then I had to do the drug
- 38:02tests and everything and go back for awards
- 38:04the next day. So I got barely any
- 38:06sleep.
- 38:07And then I think I had Saturday where
- 38:09I just kinda
- 38:11hung out and then Sunday, I had to
- 38:13go back to work, Like, it was just
- 38:14like, no. You don't get an extra day
- 38:15off. It's end of quarter. Like, you know,
- 38:18Tesla doesn't care if you gotta run a
- 38:19hundred mile. So
- 38:21Do they... I mean, do you do the
- 38:23people you work with, like,
- 38:24now and then have, like, any idea what
- 38:27you actually do.
- 38:29Yeah. I mean, like, my coworkers are supportive
- 38:32of it for sure. And, like, my current
- 38:34job, like, my boss... Like, posted something to
- 38:37Linkedin
- 38:38and, like, had of picture of me and
- 38:40like, congrats, Sierra, and like, all the stuff,
- 38:42like, they're super supportive of it. So
- 38:45Yeah. No. They get it.
- 38:48It's just when you work for a major
- 38:50company like Tesla you're not really like...
- 38:53It friends with the boss. Like, I've never
- 38:55met Elon. So...
- 38:57Yeah.
- 38:58And that's probably a good thing.
- 39:01Did they give you a tesla?
- 39:04No. No way.
- 39:06And I don't drive a tesla. I'd I
- 39:08drive a subaru roof.
- 39:10Oh, my gosh.
- 39:13Okay. So you have bad water.
- 39:16What do you have before bad water or
- 39:17anything? Did you... You said you a 50
- 39:19k?
- 39:20Oh, yeah. So I'm.
- 39:23Silver tin,
- 39:25Alpine 50 k, and that's Silver team Colorado.
- 39:29Not this weekend but next weekend on Saturday.
- 39:31So I think that's the
- 39:33sixth. So I6I
- 39:36saw Sabrina Stanley is signed up, which is
- 39:38funny.
- 39:39I don't know if you know who that
- 39:40is.
- 39:42She's 1 hard rock. And she lives in
- 39:44Silver. I was like, what?
- 39:46But now, it's okay.
- 39:48Hey, everybody. Have you heard of 2 before?
- 39:512 before supporting this podcast, and I love
- 39:54taking some 2 before before a good workout.
- 39:57It increases your endurance, manages the inflammation, and
- 40:00supports immunity while also promoting
- 40:02adaptations. It stimulates
- 40:04vas dilation, which increases
- 40:07blood flow to working muscles.
- 40:09This is made with New Zealand black current
- 40:12berries, and will help you feel great and
- 40:15efficient on your next workout. So check it
- 40:17out with the code lindsay, you can get
- 40:2030 percent off your purchase. That's a big
- 40:23percentage, 30 percent. So combine their natural pre
- 40:27workout black current powder with 4 to 8
- 40:29ounces of water and see how you feel
- 40:32on your next workout. You wanna drink it,
- 40:33like 30 to 45 minutes before the workout.
- 40:36Go to 2 before, that's the number 224
- 40:39dot com and use the code lindsay
- 40:42for 30 percent off your order. Alright, Friends
- 40:44back to the show?
- 40:49How do you do with altitude? And like,
- 40:51what's that like where you live?
- 40:54Vegas is that, like, 2 to 3 in
- 40:56town, and then we actually...
- 40:59Like, I can go up to our base
- 41:02of our mountain, which is not Charleston and
- 41:04run up the road, and it will go
- 41:05up to, like, 8 something just on the
- 41:07road. So
- 41:09I do pretty well else. It is to.
- 41:11Like, when I ran lead bill, and I've
- 41:13done other, like, high altitude races. I've never
- 41:15really struggled with, like, l sickness
- 41:19Unless I'm, like, over 14 for very long,
- 41:22like, I'm not getting sick or anything like
- 41:25What is... The most beautiful mountain you've ever
- 41:28peaked.
- 41:29Oh, man.
- 41:32Tasha has some really cool.
- 41:35Peaks, like the Ta mountain range in Utah.
- 41:38It's very similar to the San juan, which
- 41:40is where we're gonna be running Silver,
- 41:45just, like, I'm trying to think,
- 41:48Bell map was pretty cool. Was like, super
- 41:50rocky.
- 41:51I mean, I love Mount wait at me
- 41:52too. I mean It's just you know, it's
- 41:55so epic.
- 41:57Lang is a cool 1 2,
- 42:00boundary peak. That's,
- 42:02technically, the highest in Nevada, I wanna say,
- 42:05but it's on the border, so it's kinda
- 42:07argue
- 42:08arguably the highest.
- 42:10Mh.
- 42:11I'd like to do more. I've kinda, like,
- 42:14calm them down on the peak bag and
- 42:16with all these ultra,
- 42:18it's kinda like,
- 42:19Okay. Yeah if I gotta run a hundred
- 42:20mile and go, you know, climb whole bunch
- 42:22of peaks.
- 42:24But, yeah. No. It's fun, and I could.
- 42:28Yeah. And you have you have time... It's
- 42:30like, you have time to focus on that
- 42:31in other part times in your life. Like,
- 42:33you don't have to do that right now.
- 42:35You've you got other focus. Yeah. I'm close
- 42:37enough though. Like, this weekend, we'll be out
- 42:40by loan Pine. So I'll be able to
- 42:42see, like, Whitney and horseshoe meadows is the
- 42:45road we're gonna run up, and that's actually
- 42:47gonna be the road that takes you the
- 42:49base of Lang.
- 42:50So Okay. We'll get plenty of good views
- 42:53of the peaks.
- 42:55So...
- 42:57Okay. So 1 of my favorite questions to
- 42:59ask.
- 43:00Specifically ultra runners? I guess I asked shorter
- 43:03distance runners as too, but how do you
- 43:05have fun?
- 43:07When you're like, hurting so bad? Like, how
- 43:09do you marry those 2 things? Because you're
- 43:11obviously doing that as well?
- 43:15Yeah.
- 43:16I mean, I guess,
- 43:18it's kind of like... And this is kind
- 43:20like the beauty of, like, even, like, why
- 43:22do I wanna go back. To bad water
- 43:24and, like, you look at some of the
- 43:25pictures and me out there and you're like,
- 43:26I don't know why this girl wants to
- 43:28work. Crazy.
- 43:30But to. Yeah. I know. My dad was
- 43:32crying at the finish line. Maybe he's like,
- 43:340 you're 1 tough, like, son of a
- 43:37whatever, and I'm just, like,
- 43:39I mean, like, I don't cry, but, like,
- 43:41seeing him cry, like, how worried he was
- 43:44is, like, oh my gosh.
- 43:46But, no. I think a lot of it's
- 43:48just like,
- 43:49we're
- 43:50lucky that we have the opportunity to, like...
- 43:55Experience these kinds of, like, highs and lows
- 43:58and, like, a controlled, like, it would say
- 44:00safe setting.
- 44:02You know, and it's just it is beautiful
- 44:05to be able to, like, come out of
- 44:06it and be, like, well, look,
- 44:08you know, look what I did or look
- 44:10what I accomplished. And I didn't give up
- 44:11and, like, you know, it may not seem
- 44:14like it's all fun in the moment. But,
- 44:16like, you know, you go through your highs
- 44:17and your lows, then it's...
- 44:19Kind of, like, I mean, doing drugs. I
- 44:22I don't do drugs, but, like, I would
- 44:24imagine, like, with your endorsements and everything too,
- 44:26you know? So
- 44:28it's addict. It's just... It's really fun, and
- 44:31you get to meet great people. Like, you
- 44:33know, I've made a lot of friends at
- 44:35Alt and just
- 44:38ultra runners are all good people. Like, you
- 44:40just have a lot of
- 44:41unique, like, shared experiences. I, I'm met my
- 44:44boyfriend,
- 44:44running, Like, at a birthday run, we did
- 44:4740 miles at Tahoe. So it's like, you
- 44:49know, like,
- 44:50stuff comes from that. So
- 44:54from Yeah. I mean, that would be my
- 44:57answer. It's just like a great way to
- 45:00go through the highs and the lows and,
- 45:02No. You're gonna be okay. Like, it's it's
- 45:04gonna be over eventually. So
- 45:07it makes... You can, like, channel that to
- 45:09all areas the life too. Right? Like, I
- 45:11feel like, I wouldn't be as hard of
- 45:13a worker if I wasn't,
- 45:15you know, putting myself in those uncomfortable problem
- 45:18solving
- 45:19situations. Like, in my free time. So...
- 45:21I love that you met your boyfriend at
- 45:23a 40 mile run,
- 45:25like, group run.
- 45:27In
- 45:28Yeah. He didn't... For the record, he didn't
- 45:31do the whole 40 miles, but he he
- 45:34had a different race that morning.
- 45:36And then he showed up halfway through within
- 45:39and out for everyone. So everybody was like,
- 45:42okay guy. This guy cool.
- 45:44We'll let him hang out along.
- 45:47He's feeding us.
- 45:48Yeah. We were all starving at that point.
- 45:50I think we're, like, 20 miles in, and
- 45:52it was it was in Tahoe in November
- 45:55and a snowstorm was, like, coming that night.
- 45:58So it's just... I was miserable because I
- 46:00hate the cold. I was, like, this is
- 46:02bad.
- 46:03But... No. It's was better to have, like,
- 46:05good companies. So...
- 46:07You live in the right place then. So
- 46:09wait, did so does see live in Vegas
- 46:10too?
- 46:11Mh.
- 46:12Okay. Was he already there or did he
- 46:14move there to be with you? No. He
- 46:16lived in reno.
- 46:18So he to leave
- 46:20the north
- 46:21I'm down
- 46:22So what are your biggest
- 46:24goals from here on out? Like, obviously, the
- 46:27short term goal right now is, like, said
- 46:28you wanna win bad? You wanna have a
- 46:30good race there, But, like, what are your
- 46:31long term goals with the sport?
- 46:34Yeah.
- 46:35So You definitely, I... You know, I'd love
- 46:38to
- 46:39redeem myself at bad water and potentially pull
- 46:41off a win at that. And then,
- 46:44you know, the golden ticket thing. That seems
- 46:47like that maybe the next
- 46:49thing to chase in the immediate future.
- 46:53And then,
- 46:54yeah. I mean, I'm definitely not satisfied with
- 46:56900 mile p. Either... Look, I think we
- 46:59can do some work on that. And
- 47:03I'd like to get closer to break in
- 47:0515 and more in that range and just
- 47:07see what's possible, you know? And, yeah. Just
- 47:10continue to grow in the sport. I mean,
- 47:13I feel like I've already came a long
- 47:15way since my first 1 back in 20
- 47:1719 and
- 47:19you know, you just gotta see what works
- 47:21for you and takes a lot of trial
- 47:23and error to figure it all out. So
- 47:26Yeah. 5 years, and the grand scheme of
- 47:28things like, it is a lot of years,
- 47:30but it's really not that many years. Of
- 47:33hundred mile. I mean, in those 5 years,
- 47:35you've packed in quite a bit, though. Mh.
- 47:38Yeah.
- 47:39It's taking it more seriously, I guess, if
- 47:41you will, because there living a year I
- 47:43did, like, 6 in a year, and that's
- 47:45just, like, no elites are doing that. Like...
- 47:47Yeah. And, you know,
- 47:49the increase in my performance shows when I
- 47:52kinda scale back on the whole. Like, we're
- 47:54not gonna do 3 in a month. Like,
- 47:56that's just crazy. Like, it seemed it was
- 47:58fun, but, like, I'm not being, like, super
- 48:01competitive at any of those 3. I'm just
- 48:03surviving at that point. You know. So
- 48:06What do you think you got out of
- 48:07that though? Like,
- 48:09why did you... Why do you think you
- 48:10did that many so often and then, like,
- 48:12what what did you gain from it?
- 48:15So the real reason why I did all
- 48:173
- 48:18the long answer was because, you know, these...
- 48:21All these races now. They all have, like,
- 48:23lotte.
- 48:24Like, waitlist list, and it's just like, it's
- 48:26not like, how it used to be where
- 48:28you can just go do whatever race you
- 48:30want. And, like, you know, everybody has there
- 48:32they're, like, bucket list, races and, Cafe Crest,
- 48:35Angels Stressed, and Lead bill were all on
- 48:38the list. And then
- 48:40I just they all do them at different
- 48:43times too, like, when you have to, like,
- 48:45enter the lottery or find out. So you
- 48:47can't really, like,
- 48:48totally strategically plan your whole seasons. It's all,
- 48:52you know, at the mercy of whatever the
- 48:54lottery decides. So
- 48:56that year,
- 48:57I entered Lead with friends,
- 48:59like, as a group lottery, and that was
- 49:01my third year doing it, but first year
- 49:04as a group. And I never got in
- 49:06the other 2. So I was, like, not
- 49:08really counting on getting in, and I got
- 49:10in. So I found that out over, like...
- 49:12I think it was, like New Year's Eve.
- 49:14And at that point,
- 49:15I think this was a year after 20
- 49:1720 and 20 21. There was a lot
- 49:19of cancellations.
- 49:21I had been...
- 49:22On the Cascade crest waitlist list
- 49:25rolled over twice or something, and totally forgot.
- 49:29And then I was on the A waitlist
- 49:31list,
- 49:32got the email about that,
- 49:34needed a hard rock qualifier, so I accepted.
- 49:37Because I'm like, well, you know,
- 49:40I might as well.
- 49:41And then after that, I got up off
- 49:44the waitlist list for Cascade.
- 49:46And then I'm, like,
- 49:48who knows when I'm gonna be able to
- 49:49do these again?
- 49:51And
- 49:52everybody had these, like, grand slam or, like,
- 49:54you know, the Sally did her, like, she's
- 49:57was strong or, you know, like, all these,
- 49:59like, crazy
- 50:01whatever. So I'm like, what, why not just
- 50:03do this thing? I'm gonna call it to
- 50:04Seriously. I'm like, I'm gonna do all 3.
- 50:07It's gonna be in the summer of 20
- 50:0922 and
- 50:10So I did it, and it was fun.
- 50:13I mean, I I had a good time
- 50:14with it. And I don't have any regrets.
- 50:16I mean, I'd like to go back and
- 50:18run a fast time at Led bill. I
- 50:19think I could do that. And I'd like
- 50:21to do the actual Ac course because it
- 50:23was the out and back here, so that.
- 50:25Was a little unfortunate, but your No. It
- 50:28taught me a lot
- 50:30you know, about sticking
- 50:32through the tough times because, I mean,
- 50:35you know, it's not really easy to ask
- 50:37your body to do that
- 50:392 weeks out from each 1. And...
- 50:43Yeah.
- 50:44That was that was a fun summer.
- 50:47I had some, like, help stuff going on
- 50:49at that point too. So my mind wasn't,
- 50:51like, a hundred percent where it needed to
- 50:53be, but
- 50:54good distraction, I guess, at the Alt. So...
- 50:59And you got through whatever that was okay,
- 51:01and everything's fine.
- 51:02Yep. Yep. No. It's just women's health type
- 51:06stuff fun fun stuff where you're,
- 51:09you know, I don't know. It's just...
- 51:11Your girls spun sometimes.
- 51:130I0I
- 51:15hear you. I've I've gotten all the parts
- 51:17removed at this point. So I feel it.
- 51:21Yeah.
- 51:21Okay. That's why I lost the crew member.
- 51:241 of them has that surgery for that
- 51:26reason as well, and it's... From last year,
- 51:29you know, and it's just, like, such a
- 51:31bummer. I mean, as happened with me, I'd
- 51:33have part of my Ce removed.
- 51:35And I had found out about it, like,
- 51:37right before 1 of the hundreds. And then
- 51:39Yeah. I had to wait, like, 6 months
- 51:40to do it. So that was that was
- 51:42cool. But
- 51:44anyway, That was good.
- 51:46Yeah. It's
- 51:48it's can be emotional too.
- 51:50It is, and it's scary because, like, you
- 51:53know, they just call you, and they tell
- 51:55you, like, your test results, and they're just,
- 51:57like, the person who's calling you doesn't really
- 52:00know what they're talking about. They don't really
- 52:02care,
- 52:03they just drop this bomb on you, and
- 52:05then they're like, oh, we'll have to call
- 52:07you back to schedule your procedure blah blah
- 52:09Blah. You're like, am I dying? Like, what's...
- 52:11Going on, you know, I'd like here. So
- 52:15I don't know. I mean, for me, it
- 52:16was, like, I didn't have cancer, but it
- 52:18was, like, what's 1 step away from having
- 52:21cancer. So was pretty scary, like, being
- 52:2430... Like, early thirties and being, like, what
- 52:26the heck. And then you're at the
- 52:28lady doctor and all these people are happy
- 52:30that are, like, having babies and stuff. And
- 52:32you're like, I'm just sad. Like,
- 52:35I'm not here for something happy. You,
- 52:38So
- 52:39anyway... Can we think about that at the
- 52:41Ob g way, like,
- 52:43the range of...
- 52:45Patients that are in that... Emotions?
- 52:48Yeah. You've got like people having miscarriage, people
- 52:51about to give birth, people who might have
- 52:53a lump in their breasts or, you know,
- 52:55like all these different
- 52:57situations just sitting in that waiting room, and
- 52:58you have no idea what anybody else is
- 53:00there for unless, of course, they're like super
- 53:02pregnant.
- 53:03The right.
- 53:04You know, But but you didn't even know,
- 53:06like what the status of that is, you
- 53:08know, it's like, it's such a wild
- 53:10really a wild place to be.
- 53:13That's pretty wild to me that you were
- 53:15going through all that
- 53:17amidst
- 53:18running all those hundreds. Like,
- 53:20I know you said good distraction, but sometimes
- 53:22when I'm in those, like, fearful moments with
- 53:24health. I like can't pull myself up to
- 53:27do anything and the fact that you were,
- 53:29like, just carrying on and continuing to run
- 53:31is really
- 53:33impressive. I don't know if that's the right
- 53:34word.
- 53:35Well,
- 53:37for the record,
- 53:38the first 1 was Angels crest, and I
- 53:41was a mess. Like, I was like, crying
- 53:43the whole way. To 2 right wood just
- 53:46because I was like, you know, I don't
- 53:48know. The conclusion I had the night before
- 53:50that... Well, I had
- 53:52Had drank the day before the race tubes.
- 53:54I was pretty upset, But Yeah. The night
- 53:56before I'm like, you know what? I'm not
- 53:57scared of running a hundred mile, but I
- 53:59am scared of dying. So
- 54:01Yeah.
- 54:02I think that was just tough for me.
- 54:06But, yeah. I mean,
- 54:08I dealt with that up until...
- 54:10I had just more clearer
- 54:12answers, and, yeah. It's hard. It's hard to
- 54:14get in your head. And, I mean, getting
- 54:16through these hundreds is not hard. Because you,
- 54:19like, do it so much. You know you're
- 54:21gonna be okay most time, but, like, you
- 54:23know,
- 54:24help the scary. Because this just, like, this
- 54:26is out of my control. Like, this is
- 54:28not something I have any power over, and
- 54:30it makes you feel very
- 54:32powerless,
- 54:33I guess. So
- 54:35yeah. It was tough. This is tough. This
- 54:37time for sure. Yeah.
- 54:40Alright. What is something professionally or personally you
- 54:42would like to do? Well, we've kinda covered
- 54:44this, but... This can be outside of running
- 54:46to, but
- 54:47I always wrap up with this question. What
- 54:49is something
- 54:50professionally or personally you'd like to do that
- 54:52you haven't done yet. And, definitely, I'd like
- 54:54to travel more. I mean, I feel like
- 54:5620 20 kinda, like, put a damper on
- 54:59everything with that. Like, I've
- 55:01you know, and not just with racing and
- 55:04running either. Like, I used to kinda go
- 55:06out of the country every year in, like,
- 55:07see new places, but,
- 55:09my passport
- 55:11is now expired. And I need to renew
- 55:13it.
- 55:14Yeah. So just see more things then
- 55:17I need to probably to focus on getting
- 55:19home more too, like, now that I have
- 55:21more of a regular
- 55:22schedule just because, you know, my parents are
- 55:24getting older and everything.
- 55:27Yeah. And I've I mean,
- 55:29other than trying to just
- 55:31improve my running and
- 55:34probably advance in my career too. Like, I
- 55:37actually... You know, I'm like, happy with what
- 55:39I'm doing at this point, and I feel
- 55:40like there's opportunity for growth and with Tesla
- 55:44I just didn't feel that way. It I
- 55:45was very, like, stagnant. So,
- 55:48yeah. I'm excited. I'm excited for what's to
- 55:51come. So
- 55:52will your dad come back to bad water?
- 55:55Oh,
- 55:56he can't this year because actually, he's...
- 56:00Been diagnosed with cancer, so he's gonna be
- 56:02going through
- 56:04radiation, I think right around the same time.
- 56:06So
- 56:07he would, if he could, but I don't
- 56:10think you're spirit. I don't think he can.
- 56:11Yeah. I know as a bummer because I
- 56:14think he really wanted to go, but I
- 56:16like no. You gotta focus on this and
- 56:18being in a hundred and 20 degree. He
- 56:20is not gonna no for you right now.
- 56:22So
- 56:23you can tell them you're gonna feel and
- 56:25look a lot better than you did last
- 56:26year.
- 56:28We'll have to get lots of photos and
- 56:29give lots of updates. Yeah. You know? Look,
- 56:32this is actually fun dad. Look, I don't
- 56:34look dead.
- 56:37No. Everybody at the finish was like, oh
- 56:39my god. I'm like, I know. I feel
- 56:41like that. Like, you don't need to tell
- 56:42me. Like, I I know with that I
- 56:44feel or then I looked that way. So
- 56:46I think it's gonna go so much better.
- 56:48I'm excited to... Follow and see how you
- 56:50do. Thanks. Yeah. I'm excited to get it
- 56:53get it going
- 56:54Doing right around the corner. So...
- 56:57Do you have a best most recent book
- 56:59you've read? I can't imagine you have much
- 57:01time to read?
- 57:04I
- 57:05haven't been reading too much. I did get
- 57:07that book by,
- 57:10I'm forgetting the name, but it's Tommy Ribs
- 57:12wife. Do you know what book I'm talking
- 57:14about? Yeah. Is it stuff?
- 57:17I...
- 57:19You know a book I'm talking about. So
- 57:21I started that book. And I did think
- 57:23it was very good, and I need to
- 57:25finish it. I just got lazy. And maybe
- 57:28during day for a week. I'll pick it
- 57:29up. Book I'll, continue. But, no. I was
- 57:32a huge Tommy Rogue fan, and I, like,
- 57:35following her too. So when I saw that
- 57:37come out and had to get it.
- 57:39Yeah. Her book is called
- 57:41everything all at once.
- 57:43Yes. There you go That's it. Yeah. It
- 57:46movie called that too not related. But Yeah
- 57:49related
- 57:50It wasn't related to her book, but I
- 57:52I... That's... I don't know. I couldn't think
- 57:54of it. Is something I wanted to face
- 57:56stars but, like, no. It's at the underneath
- 57:58of it. So, yeah. You're right. You're right.
- 58:00Yeah. She's a beautiful writer. She's really, really
- 58:02good at that.
- 58:03Think what's your last message to leave with
- 58:05our audience?
- 58:06I guess I would just say, like, you
- 58:08know,
- 58:10and mean, I'm assuming it's primarily runners. There
- 58:12listening.
- 58:14Yeah. If you have goals, just keep chasing
- 58:17after your goals.
- 58:18I mean, you gotta start somewhere. And, I
- 58:20mean, that's the only way I've gotten better
- 58:22is, like, believing in yourself and, you know,
- 58:25setting the bar higher and
- 58:27just...
- 58:28Keep keep at it. Keep it up, and
- 58:31I don't know. Stay strong.
