- 0:00Well, every once in a while, the Brewery Underground podcast, we
- 0:04go on the road and today we are in East Nashville.
- 0:08Scott Taron, this is a really, really, really big deal today,
- 0:12what we're doing. All right.
- 0:13Something unique, something we haven't done before.
- 0:16We mostly do these on teams. We've done remotes where we've
- 0:20got gone to breweries, we have. We are actually in a
- 0:23professional studio. A professional studio.
- 0:26Hey, thanks for Tyler having us over here, Taylor.
- 0:30Taylor, thanks for Taylor having us over.
- 0:31Here, Tyler, that's. Right.
- 0:35And the guy on the. We've got a guest.
- 0:37Yeah. We're not here just by
- 0:38ourselves. We have singer-songwriter Tyler
- 0:41Boone, who you also know is, you know he's got Boone's bourbon.
- 0:46You're like Mr. Entrepreneur. You do everything.
- 0:48You're, you're like a renaissance man, aren't you?
- 0:50I'm. Just trying to pay off my
- 0:51student loans. Dude couldn't get a job so.
- 0:56Well, it is indeed a pleasure. I know Scott has met you a
- 1:00couple of times and this is my first chance of beating you
- 1:03today, but we're really excited to get you on.
- 1:06And you know, one thing that we do, we always start the podcast,
- 1:10as we always start the podcast, drinking a beer.
- 1:13And we've got some beer in front of us.
- 1:15And I'll tell you what, it's really timely because, oh, I
- 1:18don't know, it's Boone's Beer, which was just released a recent
- 1:21what a. Coincidence.
- 1:22What a. Coincidence.
- 1:23He just happened to have it here, huh?
- 1:25You guys want to crack one? Let's crack one.
- 1:27It's nice and cold. Thanks.
- 1:29For making it cold. It's called Homegrown Boone's
- 1:31beer. Cheers.
- 1:35Cheers. Cheers.
- 1:35Taylor's got one over there. Cheers.
- 1:38Oh yeah, we made it. Sure, he was hooked up.
- 1:40Let's get all over his keyboard. Let's.
- 1:44Do that. Cheers.
- 1:45All right. I've had this once already.
- 1:47This is Steve's first time having it.
- 1:48And you, Taylor, might be yours. You got it at Frugal.
- 1:51I got it at Frugal. McDougal.
- 1:52OK, cool. Both times.
- 1:54Nice. Matter of fact, as a matter of
- 1:55fact, I went back today and got another 4 pack.
- 1:57I was like I was running a little low.
- 1:58I'd given most of mine away. Nice.
- 2:01We drank some. You.
- 2:01Know Eric over there, the buyer. I don't know, Eric.
- 2:04He's the, he's the beer buyer. Really, man.
- 2:06Frugal McDougal. I, I freaking love those guys.
- 2:09There's a Frugal McDougal in Rock Hill because North County's
- 2:12a control state, so everyone gets the booze and Rock Hill,
- 2:14they drive down there from Charlotte and go back and so
- 2:17there's the original Frugal McDougal was there and I'm from
- 2:19South. That's where this all started.
- 2:21And so they all sell all of it. But the Frugal here, I mean,
- 2:23it's the Nashville 1. So everyone, every local brand
- 2:26or brand that just gets distribution.
- 2:28Nashville, they're gunning for that store.
- 2:30Do they support the living shit out of us?
- 2:32They all wear Booms T-shirts. That's great.
- 2:34Obviously, they've had this one for a long time.
- 2:35The Single Barrel, they didn't even taste it.
- 2:37They brought it in. And when I had this, I was like,
- 2:39man, Beer's so competitive in Nashville.
- 2:41I was like, they're not going to take it.
- 2:43And I just showed up and Eric goes out and I don't need to
- 2:45taste it, I'll bring it in. I was like, Oh my God, so and it
- 2:48made and it made Lippman go, oh, that's our distributed living
- 2:50burgers, the green trucks. Have you ever?
- 2:52Seen them? Yeah, yeah.
- 2:53Anyway, well, thanks for buying it, it's awesome.
- 2:54Yeah, absolutely. And you're like, selling beery
- 2:57stuff is easy, huh dude? I think the beer's going to be
- 3:00bigger than the bourbon. Yeah, because everyone will try
- 3:02a beer. They will it's yeah, you know,
- 3:04it's it's it's quickly consumed kind of thing.
- 3:06And get them. You know you can share them, but
- 3:08you know this lasts longer but. Yeah, that, you know, you have
- 3:10people sip on. That absolutely, which is go
- 3:13ahead, Steve. No, I was going to say so that
- 3:15the beer is a pills. There, yes.
- 3:17Yeah, definitely. And so I'm really curious as how
- 3:20long has this been in the planning stages for you to
- 3:24finally get this beer out? So actually it's funny enough
- 3:26that happened on I was like, oh, cool, we're doing this podcast
- 3:28yesterday. I saw a memory on, you know,
- 3:29memories on Facebook six years ago yesterday.
- 3:32We started the idea of it like got the like the the label and
- 3:35the labels change a little bit over time.
- 3:37Label used to look really similar to that and then it
- 3:40changed into this where it's got, well, this looks like the
- 3:42single barrel. I'm not sure if you had the
- 3:43single barrel. It's got the doggie on it.
- 3:45OK. And so that's, that's our Wiener
- 3:47dog from growing up. And then it's a Palmetto from
- 3:50Charleston, SC home grown, very southern.
- 3:54Why? I used to do a lot of stuff with
- 3:55like Hootie growing up. I used to like, I was fortunate
- 3:57to open up from a lot when I was like in college.
- 4:00And so they always said home grown.
- 4:02And I thought that, oh, that sounds pretty southern.
- 4:04And so that's where it came from.
- 4:05But three years ago we actually launched it.
- 4:08It's so it's been out for three years, but entrepreneur stuff,
- 4:11we had a bad business Co Packer who were in we're actually still
- 4:15in legal battles with and we're going to win.
- 4:18But they're they're so screwed. But they they got they try to
- 4:21get involved and they kind of ruined it.
- 4:23And it was with Holy City Brewery.
- 4:25And so the beauty of it was Holy City Brewer is the big like the
- 4:27biggest sorry brewery in South Carolina.
- 4:30I know the owner and he was like, dude, let's do collab with
- 4:33Boone's bourbon because you guys are kicking butt.
- 4:34He made us the recipe. And so I didn't have to hire
- 4:37anybody. He just goes, I'm going to make
- 4:38it for you. And it first came out with Holy
- 4:40City and then we had to stop it because it got all weird with
- 4:42that ex Co Packer. And we're all cool with Holy
- 4:44City. They're like, hey, man, you know
- 4:45what, we're going to stop it because it's a little weird with
- 4:48this person, but how about you keep the recipe for free?
- 4:50And we're like, what? No way.
- 4:52And so then we had another brewery called Tradesman in
- 4:55Charleston. They just weren't doing well.
- 4:57And it's dude, I would never own.
- 4:59I would never start a brewery or to stairless.
- 5:00I was rich because it's so much money to keep the lights on.
- 5:03And so now we're with Columbia, Columbia Craft Brewing Company
- 5:07Peak Drift. Yep.
- 5:08Which is on the can. Yep.
- 5:09So Peak Drift is just like, like Bardstown, where we do a single
- 5:13barrel, just a massive facility where everyone's making their
- 5:16beer out of there. Yeah.
- 5:17Because they can make it the price point cheaper and you just
- 5:19be more competitive. And so it's in Columbia, SC They
- 5:22own Columbia Craft Brewing Company.
- 5:23That's their brand, but Peak drift that does like Island
- 5:27Coastal Lager. They're from Charleston, OK,
- 5:29somebody Scottie Hanson, that's his brand and they do, you know,
- 5:32high rise, the CBDTNC. They're from Charleston too.
- 5:35OK, so they're just making a lot of stuff so that so that's where
- 5:38this is now. OK, made out.
- 5:39Of so like a contract Brewer? Yeah, yeah.
- 5:42But it's our recipe, it's our band.
- 5:43We just pay them and honestly, it's the best move ever did now
- 5:46being with them because they're they're so big.
- 5:48It's they're called cans are it's a dude art.
- 5:50It went way down once we got to them finally SO.
- 5:53It's great. It's 5.4% really nice ABV on
- 5:56this thing. It's delicious.
- 5:58Taylor, what do you think it is? It is pretty good, isn't it?
- 6:00Yes. I love it, I love it.
- 6:02But man, it took three years to kind of get where at because
- 6:04also the biggest thing is distribution.
- 6:06You could have a beer, but if you got Joe Schmo's with a
- 6:09license at the end of the street with a small truck, the the
- 6:12bigger stars like man, I don't want to open up a new contract
- 6:15with a distributor. Just go get the big guys and
- 6:17you're like, Oh my God, I'm trying.
- 6:19And so now that Littman picked it up in Nashville, that's why
- 6:21you see it everywhere now, because they're they're, they're
- 6:23awesome. How does that happen?
- 6:24Like do you interview distributors and talk to them
- 6:27and like or just kind of say who's interested?
- 6:29E-mail the hell out of them. And that's and, and sometimes
- 6:32it's like boom. And sometimes it's like, you
- 6:34know, it's the bigger distributor.
- 6:36Sometimes it's corporate ish or it is corporate and they go,
- 6:39hey, man, yeah, fiscal years at next year this time and you
- 6:42might miss the deadline and you're like, shit, I got to
- 6:44wait. And so in South Carolina, we had
- 6:46a distributor that was statewide called Holy City Distribution.
- 6:50And they were stealing money from everybody, including us.
- 6:52And so they went under. And so then we we were only
- 6:54distributing S kind in Rock Hill.
- 6:56Well, I'm sure you know, this beer is different than spirits.
- 6:59Spirits is usually statewide, usually depending on the state.
- 7:02Tennessee it's not, but but we opted in for let me to take the
- 7:06whole state for us. But because it's in section,
- 7:08it's a franchise state. But in South Carolina it's just
- 7:11one, right? And so for spirits, but for
- 7:13beer, it's every section. And so for a minute we were just
- 7:17with, it's called, Oh my God, why am I having a brain fart?
- 7:21Who's your distributor in Rock Hill?
- 7:22They're the biggest ones Comer and they're the Miller house.
- 7:27And so that's big deal for us cuz every time I go to Rock
- 7:29Hill, it's like we're a rock star cuz I'll walk in.
- 7:31Hey, I'm the owner and I just want to meet you there.
- 7:33Go. We've had this for I'm like,
- 7:34whoa. So distribution is a really
- 7:36important thing, but you know, not to get so much on
- 7:39distribution, but RNDC is who we have in South Carolina.
- 7:43RNDC is like one of the biggest ones in the country.
- 7:45They're now getting gutted. And you know, Reyes Reyes, big
- 7:48beer distributor, they just ended California.
- 7:50They took Brown Foreman from him.
- 7:51They took Tito's from him, which is Jack Daniels and all this
- 7:54stuff. And so RNDC is now leaving
- 7:56California. They just announced yesterday,
- 7:57September 1st. So there's just a cutthroat game
- 8:00distribution. You'd be killing it.
- 8:01And the next, you know, they might lose their biggest
- 8:03contract and then you were a part of that and they go, hey,
- 8:06we're out of business, see you later.
- 8:07It's a wild thing. And it's a 3 tier system.
- 8:09So the money goes three times and so sometimes the the the
- 8:12brand always gets screwed because the money is still
- 8:15coming again. Maybe all of a sudden, maybe the
- 8:17account didn't pay for the the the beer Store and then you
- 8:20don't get your money. Sure, it's wild so.
- 8:23Well, saw you posted pictures on Instagram of your beer at you
- 8:28know, he said got a frugal Mcdougal's.
- 8:30I'm I'm, I'm assuming you went in there.
- 8:31You probably looked around like, you know what, how much exciting
- 8:35was that for you being in Nashville and you walk in there
- 8:38and like, I see my. I went three times.
- 8:41I was like, I kept, I kept walking in there.
- 8:42I'm like, shit, it's not here yet.
- 8:44So it took the third time I was like, yes, it's finally here.
- 8:46Yeah, I was getting set. It's kind of like hitting that.
- 8:48Little section right there. It's yeah, it's.
- 8:50And I was like, yeah, it's not here.
- 8:51Oh, there it is. Thank God.
- 8:52So. When I went the first time, it
- 8:54was last week and I'm walking through and it you said it was
- 8:56there and I was like, shit, they're sold out or I can't find
- 8:59her or something. So I wandered and wandered and I
- 9:01got it hits the little video I made.
- 9:03I was like, yeah, there it is. He's got, he's got like, I think
- 9:07like 4 cases always at one time. But I mean, I want to get the
- 9:10kegs in there. Kegs are cool and you're talking
- 9:11about a really cool tap house or.
- 9:14Yeah, so Deep South Growler, they have two locations, one in
- 9:17Murfreesboro and one in Lenox Village.
- 9:18They're they're local to me. Like I can walk to their to
- 9:21their place and they do kegs. So I mentioned it to them, the
- 9:26hop in river north, place down on the river right there.
- 9:29That's got 60 taps. They followed us on Instagram
- 9:31today, did they OK? I sent them AI sent them a text
- 9:34and said, hey, guys, just, you know, at least create a demand
- 9:37or something. Maybe if you don't have kegs
- 9:39yet, ask for them. And then, you know, Lippman pays
- 9:41attention and yeah, totally, you know, they're seeing that.
- 9:43So. My buddy Kevin Lilly, who runs
- 9:44Fox St. where we met at that big party, Taylor was there too, a
- 9:48little snowing. You know, he's, I've known him
- 9:50for years. He's on a big brewery.
- 9:52He owns a piece of I believe a Nashville beer, but he's on Rock
- 9:56Brothers Brew. We did like 3-11 and all that.
- 9:58He told me a good like quote to remember.
- 10:00He goes, man, no matter what you're doing, if you're stressed
- 10:01out, the account wants it. That's gold because you can be
- 10:04like, oh, and no, you know, my distributor hates me and it up.
- 10:06If you can get the account to go, I want it, and the account
- 10:09goes, wait, what? OK, sure.
- 10:10So yeah, if I can get the account to love you, that's a
- 10:12big deal. That's it because I know talking
- 10:14to them, the owners of Deep South Growler just in, in
- 10:16general, just regular things. And she's like, yeah, I can call
- 10:19up so and so distributor and hey, I they can see what they
- 10:21have, right? I want that and they just, they
- 10:24have to give it to them. So they want it or, or ask for
- 10:26it or demand it kind of thing. And hopefully, you know, raises
- 10:30your demand and. It does.
- 10:31It's a it's pretty wild, man. You can be a distributor for a
- 10:34long time. And if you're not hitting the
- 10:35road, like if you're not hitting the pavement hard, the reps
- 10:38usually don't unless, you know, you're, you know, Jack Danos or
- 10:42something that I mentioned earlier.
- 10:43If you're like the big guys, then yeah, because I know it's
- 10:44easy to sell. They're going to do it.
- 10:46You could sit in a distributor for like a year and be like, Oh
- 10:48my God, we didn't grow at all. You know, unless, and me and my
- 10:51dad used to think that like, oh, we got a distributor, it's over
- 10:53with. And a lot of brands think that
- 10:55and you're like, no, you have to do it every day.
- 10:57And then eventually, you know, you start getting fans ish.
- 11:01And then then all of a sudden you can't knock it, you know
- 11:03what I mean? And so when we came out, even
- 11:04with this people, we had people hating us online.
- 11:06And then all of a sudden we're like, well, we're selling a ton
- 11:08of it. And then people are like, no,
- 11:09it's good stuff. So I think the last ingredient
- 11:11is time. Sometimes you just got to let it
- 11:13naturally, you got to work your ass off, but you got to
- 11:15naturally like let people go. No, I like it.
- 11:17And that's cool. And like you said, you can't let
- 11:19it sit though either at that distributor.
- 11:21You've got to be out there in front of it.
- 11:22Beer expiration. Date.
- 11:24That's. Not.
- 11:25You're right. It's a good point.
- 11:27You got to sell this. Fast.
- 11:28That's right, You want it fresh. Yeah, yeah, totally.
- 11:30Because people will look at. But I've learned to go, oh, it's
- 11:32fresh, man. They'll look at the data, go,
- 11:33oh, that sucks because what if it's been sitting there forever?
- 11:36And they'll go, oh, this is gross.
- 11:37No one bought it. Yeah, You know what I mean?
- 11:38And. Somebody gets a beer that's old,
- 11:40and we've had these conversations.
- 11:42Yeah. And they're like, oh, this beer
- 11:43sucks. He's got a whole bunch of yeast
- 11:45in it or something. Yeah, Tyler, you make a bad
- 11:47beer. It's not that, man.
- 11:48It's been seduced. So fun.
- 11:50Oh. My gosh.
- 11:51How dare you make beer? Yeah, yeah.
- 11:53You should leave town dude. You're not allowed.
- 11:56Yeah, you're not allowed in Nashville.
- 11:58You know, can art is such an important aspect of any brand.
- 12:03I mean, we we've talked to so many brewery owners, you know,
- 12:07whether in this area or whatever that have talked how meticulous
- 12:12they got to be trying to figure out like the can art.
- 12:15How many people were involved just in trying to figure out
- 12:18this can art for your beer? Two people so and I'll tell you
- 12:22a funny story about the back of that.
- 12:24So my friend Shannon Duke made all the Boone's bourbon stuff
- 12:27and this is, this has always been what we did.
- 12:31Yeah, we had like 1 tweak once. We've changed the back a lot on
- 12:34the bourbon and now you can actually see it.
- 12:35It's got a guitar pick there. It says BB, it's cool.
- 12:37It's got all the awards on it and it's got a cool QR code.
- 12:40Whatever. This is fun.
- 12:41This has been changed a little bit now, but the beer pretty
- 12:45much it's always been this. We do have a Tennessee Star one
- 12:47on bench. I'm going to do, once we can
- 12:49kind of get more accounts, I'm going to tell them, hey, you
- 12:51know, I don't want to send a whole bunch of Tennessee beer
- 12:52and it's sitting in South Carolina.
- 12:54But then one day I want to take this out.
- 12:56It's already designed well like that, you know, the the ball
- 12:58with the three stars in it. So eventually we're going to
- 13:00change that. But this right here is a funny
- 13:02story. So my friend Paul Kalmus,
- 13:05Shannon Duke started the beer and then my friend Paul Kalmus
- 13:08finished it. He wanted and Charleston just
- 13:10kind of a hippie hipster town, like, you know, indie rock,
- 13:13whatever. And so he thought it'd be cool
- 13:15to put a picture me as a kid, but I have a twin brother.
- 13:18I sent the wrong picture in so that's my twin brother.
- 13:21So did I. Ever tell you that?
- 13:23Yeah. Yeah.
- 13:23So. Does he know?
- 13:24It yes and if he ever pisses me off I'm like, dude, you're on a
- 13:27beer can yeah, so that's called your cola, not like Coca-Cola.
- 13:33It's called your cola. It's like your light.
- 13:35It's a, what's the term saying? It's like your compliance, you
- 13:38know, to make sure you're not copying anybody.
- 13:40And then it's compliant because people are drinking it.
- 13:42So you have to have all the correct information on it, like
- 13:44the ABV and, you know, police drink responsibly and all that
- 13:47kind of crap. But it's also, you know, you
- 13:50submit it. It takes forever to get through
- 13:51sometimes depending who you're working with, right?
- 13:54And so if I wanted to ever change that, I'd have to stop
- 13:56production. It would take a year.
- 13:58So forever. He'll just live on it.
- 14:00I'm not gonna change it. And then that's a good story.
- 14:02Sure. I mean, yeah, love.
- 14:03It. That is great.
- 14:04That's a good trivia question too, I think.
- 14:07Yeah, Yeah. Well done.
- 14:08My parents, my I remember I had the beers here like 3 years ago.
- 14:11So I've been working my ass up to get, I brought my parents to
- 14:13go look. I did it and they just didn't
- 14:15say anything. They go, we got a town.
- 14:17Like I already know, I already saw, you know?
- 14:18So, but they knew immediately. Yeah, yeah, they knew, They knew
- 14:22that's a, that's a picture we have hanging in the house so.
- 14:25That's fantastic. Yeah.
- 14:26You've mentioned your dad a couple times.
- 14:28Yeah. You're in business with him.
- 14:29Yep. For both the bourbon and the
- 14:31beer, right. And maybe some of the other
- 14:33things. Talk about that and talk about
- 14:34how great it's got to be to be able to be working with your dad
- 14:37and. It is grandma.
- 14:38I was on the phone around when I pulled up OK and so it is great.
- 14:41I started it and then but I was a poor musician and so this is
- 14:452015 sixteen 17. I was like, I'm trying to start
- 14:48this bourbon and the bourbon is a story too.
- 14:50I started that. That's like a whole I like a big
- 14:52music deal and I didn't take it and it kind of led to this, but
- 14:55I didn't really have the full amount of money to start it.
- 14:58But even though I already spent like a whole bunch of money
- 14:59trying to figure it out, but that's like, hey, man, like I'll
- 15:01match your money. We'll put it, we'll do it in the
- 15:04first run was only for this was 226 cases, 6 packs.
- 15:09So we did that wasn't for it was only like 10 grand, but I, I was
- 15:13like, Dad, I can't, I can't fully do it.
- 15:14And he said I'll, I'll put it in there.
- 15:16And so we went 5050. And so it was a rough start in
- 15:19the beginning because my dad's but I was like chief of ICE
- 15:22Border Patrol, very like, you know, kind of militaristic and
- 15:25like you can't talk to me like that.
- 15:26I'm like, no, Dad, I'm just, I'm just saying reply, click reply
- 15:29on your emails, man. Like that's all.
- 15:31Like, I'm not mad at you. And so it took a long time for
- 15:34to get that dynamic. Yeah.
- 15:36And then we raised some money on Start Engine.
- 15:38We're doing Kickstarter, which I would never do that again.
- 15:41We can get into that too if you want, but they take like half of
- 15:43that money. But.
- 15:44Let's really buy into that, by the way.
- 15:46That's how I first. Came across oh did you invest in
- 15:48it? The very, very beginning.
- 15:50Oh, shit it. Well, you absolutely, man.
- 15:52I think you did tell me it was COVID and not to get off the
- 15:54subject, but it was COVID and I'm just playing around.
- 15:57I'm at home because not. See an ad or something?
- 15:59It was start Engine. I was like, how about small
- 16:01micro investing kind of thing and it got into start engine.
- 16:04Oh wow. And I go bourbon.
- 16:06Hell yes. And it was like 2 bucks a share
- 16:09or something at that time. And I was like, and I got 50 and
- 16:12I was like, I was being cheap I guess.
- 16:13And then I was like, what the hell am I doing?
- 16:14Let's get some worse. I bought another 50.
- 16:16So just put, I mean it was like, yeah, you should just get your
- 16:19certificate. I got 2 certificates.
- 16:20Yeah, you remember my dad signed all of them.
- 16:22The issue with that is that legal battle we're in, which I
- 16:24don't care, I'll talk about all day is, you know, they, they,
- 16:29they screwed us more legal battles.
- 16:30So there's a whole bunch of incentives we're able to give
- 16:32people and a lot of people got their stuff.
- 16:33But, you know, it's, it just sucks when, when, you know, like
- 16:36a fan goes, hey, where's my T-shirt?
- 16:38Like, hey, man, like it's coming.
- 16:39We've told, we've announced it like a million times.
- 16:41It's give us a, you know, give us a minute.
- 16:43And so there's, there's some T-shirts and stuff that people
- 16:44just haven't gotten yet. But but you know, there's we, we
- 16:47got barrels for people and hats and it was, it was really cool.
- 16:50So that's awesome. I would say this, man, I think
- 16:51it was the best marketing campaign, you know what I mean?
- 16:54They, they take a lot of that money and then they really don't
- 16:57tell you that up front. Yeah.
- 16:58So at the end of it, we're like, hey, where's our, we raised like
- 17:00300 grand. We could have done like 500K,
- 17:02but then the Rays got stopped in the middle of it because the
- 17:04crazy ex Co Packer, they reached out to me, Hey, this is our
- 17:07money we need, we need our money.
- 17:08They're like, wait, there's another owner?
- 17:10And so they it freaked out start engine and eventually our
- 17:13lawyers got involved and all these people are crazy.
- 17:15We're suing them. It was wild.
- 17:16It was such a cool thing though. I literally was just sitting on
- 17:18my back porch one day and like again, couldn't work.
- 17:22That's cool. That's how it starts.
- 17:23I was like. Yeah.
- 17:24And it led to you sitting here today because of it, because we
- 17:27had a conversation kind of, you know, just over about the thing.
- 17:30And then, hey, you want to come on the podcast?
- 17:32And by the way, I had already had the bourbon before I even
- 17:35started talking to you. I thought because I was like,
- 17:37well, I'm an investor in this company.
- 17:38I should go get the bourbon. Wow, Delicious.
- 17:41Well, I've already been through a bottle of.
- 17:42Yeah, I'm. Blown away.
- 17:43I'm telling you, I'm not just blown away.
- 17:45Cheers. That's really cool.
- 17:46Cheers man, I don't appreciate you.
- 17:48Well, the the goal is we're trying to get a bigger investor
- 17:51to get it to the next level and then we're trying to sell it.
- 17:54Yeah, that guy. There you go, bigger investors.
- 17:56Yeah, always, always got to think bigger and better.
- 17:58That's right. It's that guy right there.
- 18:01Well, we're talking to we're always talking to investors,
- 18:04sure, But you know, I hate, I hate rich people.
- 18:06They just it gets you on the phone and they're like, yeah,
- 18:08totally. And you're like, let's do it.
- 18:10You're like, well, so it's interesting, but we'll get
- 18:13there. I think, you know, it's year
- 18:14seven, man. So I think by year 10 we'll be
- 18:16in a really popular spot, you know?
- 18:19You've got the notoriety out there, man.
- 18:21That bourbon right there, We'll talk about it.
- 18:23You. Had the bourbon, right?
- 18:24Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You're going to have some more
- 18:27the matter of fact as we're as we're talking about it, we might
- 18:29as well go ahead and put some in some glasses.
- 18:31What do you may. As well.
- 18:32Oh, these are Uncle Nearest glasses.
- 18:33Well, I got one of I got different ones.
- 18:35I got one of my National Bourbon Society bell me.
- 18:37I kind of collect them from different.
- 18:40Oh, very cool. The distilleries I go to who's?
- 18:44The guy that runs the National Bourbon Society.
- 18:46Jay Spicer and Adam Terry are the 2 girl.
- 18:48Cats. There's another one with a guy
- 18:50named Sinclair. That's.
- 18:52For Taylor, Yeah. Yeah.
- 18:54Well, did your home? You weren't.
- 18:58Working hard over there. Yeah, four of these.
- 19:02I can't say no to your bourbon, man.
- 19:04Absolutely not you. Have this one.
- 19:06I've have it all the time. OK.
- 19:07Or I'll just drink from the just want.
- 19:09Do you just want the bottle? I could tell you that.
- 19:12I could tell you the mash bill on it if you never had it if you
- 19:14had it before. I have not is.
- 19:16Not. OK, well, this this is our cash
- 19:18strength. I feel like I'm doing a tasting
- 19:20right now, home grown Boone's bourbon cash strength doing this
- 19:23for seven years. This is our this is our money
- 19:25maker where because the price point I'll get to that because I
- 19:28think the price points are science too.
- 19:30And especially with this like we kept this at a really good one,
- 19:32I think for the four pack. Yep.
- 19:34So this 117 proof cashmere bourbon 75 corn, which is a
- 19:37pretty normal cut 21 rye for barley.
- 19:41I enjoy rye. I'm not really a big weeded guy.
- 19:43I was obsessed with bullet rye in 2015 sixteen where I was I
- 19:46was working at cork dorks. I was just like a were you
- 19:48really? I was just like a box guy.
- 19:50I hated that job. But that store loves us you.
- 19:53You'll see there's a bear when you walk in there on the wall.
- 19:56But I was like Bullet rye. This is cool, but I was like,
- 19:59but if it's a bourbon, it's got to be majority corn.
- 20:00I was like, well, I definitely want rye and I was going to do
- 20:037525 rye and then our distiller at the time, the first owner of
- 20:07that distillery before became that other crazy person.
- 20:10They're like hey let's do 4% barley and so that's where the
- 20:14cut ended on so you're going to get sweet on the front
- 20:16definitely the proof you're going to hit the proof on the
- 20:18front yeah but it's good but on the back end is not going to
- 20:20taste it because we do secondary finish it 21 rye little spice
- 20:23barley little you know vanilla nutty tone at the end of it but
- 20:27cheers you're not going to really take take it from the
- 20:29bottle it's. Definitely a rye guy, man.
- 20:31I love rye. I think.
- 20:32I think it's the best in cocktails, yeah.
- 20:34Yeah, it's I love, man. I love playing around that
- 20:38anywhere from 110 to 120 proof depending on the whiskey,
- 20:41because some some drink hotter than others and some don't.
- 20:44Yeah, that is really nice. I'm not kidding, that is.
- 20:46So the secondary agent process, everybody told you about it.
- 20:49So the secondary agent process, it was called Terra, the Terra
- 20:52Pure process, it's a proprietary process for like 30 years.
- 20:55It's no longer around because they went out of business.
- 20:57But that's it was from Charleston and Bart said he was
- 20:58owned a piece of it at one point.
- 21:01Then they offloaded it and then they went out of business
- 21:03because they were making all the Total wine because Total Wine
- 21:05owns all their brands. I don't know if you knew that
- 21:08like over 50% of their brands of total.
- 21:10I did, bro, Thanks so much. And so the guy that owned it
- 21:13goes, you know, I'm, I'm done doing total wine.
- 21:14Six months later, he went bankrupt, which was really not
- 21:17smart, right? And so, but that that process is
- 21:20still around. They just can't call it the tear
- 21:23pure process anymore because it's, you know, someone owes the
- 21:25patent to it, but people replicate it all the time.
- 21:27There's a guy in Star engine that does his own in Ohio.
- 21:29He does like a like a pressure cook one and then bland does
- 21:32like a steam version like and So what it is is you take the juice
- 21:35in a big VAT the the staves of the barrel and with ultrasonic
- 21:40waves, hot and cold, it comes out tasting older, but you can't
- 21:43change the eight statement, but it also keeps it consistent.
- 21:46So most brands out there that are huge and like all if you go
- 21:49to Arizona today, we're going to we're going to see high West and
- 21:52bullet and whistle pick and see all the all the normal ones,
- 21:55right? They're all using it.
- 21:56But I don't want to tell you that because the old guy from
- 21:58Tennessee's head will explode for. 40, I've been drinking 40
- 22:00years. Technology.
- 22:02And so, but we're super transparent about it because
- 22:04you'll get destroyed on YouTube for sure.
- 22:05But but that's what it is. So that's why this doesn't taste
- 22:08like 117. And so the reason we got all
- 22:10these awards and last part of the spiel, just because you
- 22:13never had it before. It won top Forbes platinum LA,
- 22:16double gold New York 2 times and double gold San Fran.
- 22:19We beat Blands. Yep, I got that wrote written
- 22:21down. Hell yeah.
- 22:22And so we think so. Some guy at the San Francisco
- 22:25one, which that's the biggest one, he goes, I think you guys
- 22:27are winning so much 'cause you have characters both of a young
- 22:30and an old in the bottle. Sure.
- 22:31So it's just, it's just, you know, I would say funky, but
- 22:33some guy goes, oh, say unique. That's a better word to say.
- 22:36And so we think it's why it's so unique, you know, But the price
- 22:38point, it's always under 40 bucks, Yeah.
- 22:40Frugal had it for 3699. Yeah, killer you, man.
- 22:44It's a killer price point. You know, people go and buy
- 22:47bourbon sometimes and you think price dictates how good
- 22:49something is. That is not the case a lot of
- 22:52times. You sometimes you pay for for
- 22:54the brand name and sometimes, man, there is a lot of killer
- 22:57shit out there at that price point and all you do is find it.
- 23:00Yeah, yeah. I'd rather spend 40 bucks on
- 23:02something I'm not sure about exactly than 100 bucks on
- 23:06something I'm not sure about just because it's 100 bucks.
- 23:07100% yeah. You know, I think some brands
- 23:10think if it if it is more in the retail that people, the customer
- 23:15is not that smart and they think it's going to be better and the
- 23:18customers like no, no dude, you know, but if you see it online a
- 23:22line, you go oh shit, it's under 40.
- 23:23If that was 50, you might not grab it, right.
- 23:25But if it's under 40, you're like, screw it, I'll take a stab
- 23:28everything. Is about marketing, isn't it you
- 23:29know it is it really is. I will say and and what you
- 23:33describe this is a completely accurate it is and delicious.
- 23:37My biggest take away is after drinking and I'm like, you know
- 23:40what you want more. I mean, you know, seriously,
- 23:42It's luckily. We have a whole bottle.
- 23:44Well, yeah, I don't know if I'll be drinking it all tonight, but.
- 23:46Taylor's been dipping into it a little bit.
- 23:48He might want a little more. Wait, but then.
- 23:51But then. But then you got a beer too,
- 23:52yes? I know.
- 23:53Yeah, exactly. So.
- 23:54So it's a Boilermaker. That's what we tried to make
- 23:56this, you know, comparison to it.
- 23:58Right. Cool like that.
- 24:00That's that when we told Holy City we like, what do you want?
- 24:02Like. Well, we want a light beer.
- 24:03I don't want, like, a stout. I think you'll have one of those
- 24:05and you're done. Yeah, we have.
- 24:07But if you get this, you might have four.
- 24:08Yeah, but you try. You try to replicate it as well.
- 24:10Sure. Yeah.
- 24:11So, and we're going to jump around a lot of questions
- 24:13tonight, but let's go back to your to your bourbon because you
- 24:17mentioned about the number of awards that you've won, you know
- 24:20some on your website. Is there one particular one that
- 24:23stands out that you were most proud of, of all the awards that
- 24:27you won? Two of them, yeah.
- 24:28So Toxic World and Forbes, we won the double gold.
- 24:31New York. I remember I was laying in bed.
- 24:33It was COVID. I was in Hollywood because I was
- 24:34like, I'm in Hollywood. I'm here.
- 24:35I'm a musician. And it was like a terrible time.
- 24:38I was like in the like, I was right in front of the
- 24:40Scientology castle. Like the dude from the 70s Show,
- 24:43you saw him like crying all the time because he was going to
- 24:45jail. Like it was a weird place and
- 24:47so, and I can get into that too because I was living right
- 24:49there, like all the actors live there.
- 24:51And then it was, I was like, wow, this is exciting.
- 24:53And then COVID happened. I'm like, man, this, this sucks.
- 24:55I'm I'm just stuck in my apartment.
- 24:57It's really gross outside. And then I woke.
- 24:59I was just like laying in bed. Like man, I don't know what to
- 25:01do. Like I moved here for the
- 25:02bourbon. And then I just, I would just, I
- 25:04would just Google Boone's bourbon all the time and I would
- 25:05put California next to it and see if I can store picked it up
- 25:07or something. And I just googled Boone's
- 25:09bourbon and all of a sudden Forbes popped up and go top 6
- 25:12ranking bourbons according to the Double Gold New York
- 25:15International Spirits Competition.
- 25:17I was like, what the And all of a sudden, dude, all these
- 25:19distributors who didn't want to pick us up, they picked us up
- 25:21like the next day. I was going to ask that.
- 25:23I mean, what does that do? I mean, well, it's.
- 25:25So silly. It's the same juice, but as soon
- 25:27as you get that award, yeah, we'll pick you up.
- 25:29Yeah. We'll pick you up.
- 25:30And so now it's pretty much all over the country.
- 25:34Well, and so the next one was the double gold in San
- 25:36Francisco, which I was dying to win and double gold is best to
- 25:39show. So that means like that's the
- 25:41top, top, top one. And so when we got double gold
- 25:43San Francisco, we'd be Bland's and even like our summer
- 25:46distributors who were not even that behind it when they picked
- 25:48us up, they were like, oh shit, like you guys, you guys are
- 25:52actually kicking butt. Like, well, it's the same juice
- 25:54as before, but but the cool thing was Canada called us that
- 25:57day and they go, Hey, we want to pick you up now.
- 25:59The deal never happened because like Canada's, it's rough.
- 26:02They, they, if you go up there for tobacco or, or any spirit,
- 26:06sure, this is 40 bucks here and it's like $90.00 up there.
- 26:09Wow. I don't know how people get
- 26:10drunk up there, you know what I mean?
- 26:12Like, isn't that crazy? Yeah.
- 26:13And so we didn't do the deal because on it we were going to
- 26:16have to pay to be in Canada. Yeah.
- 26:18I was like, well, I'm not doing it, you know what I mean?
- 26:19I was like, you guys pick up everything else.
- 26:21I'm sure they don't pay to be up there.
- 26:23And then the same company that wanted like, it's like a, it's
- 26:25called the LCBO, the same agency that want to pick us up through
- 26:28that. Then they picked up Nashville
- 26:29Barrel and I'm like, I know they're not paying for it,
- 26:32right? I mean, so maybe we're just
- 26:33small and maybe they thought that we didn't know anything but
- 26:36but those are the two favorite ones is the tops in the world
- 26:39with the double gold and then the double gold San Fran.
- 26:41Do you feel more pressure now as to how do we top ourselves or do
- 26:45you just go steady as he goes, keep on going?
- 26:49Second one, first, I was like, we're trying to prove ourselves.
- 26:52Like when we first came out, this YouTube channel called
- 26:54Rocket Whiskey, like post. So they live in Milwaukee and
- 26:57they post, Oh, this seems terrible.
- 26:59But my friends, I, I remember I post on Facebook.
- 27:01Look at these guys like making fun of us and all my friends,
- 27:04like all my buddies were like making YouTube comments like
- 27:06screw you guys. Like it was all this drama.
- 27:09Of course. And then it was just like, man,
- 27:11that sucks where people make, it's like Father Sunburn.
- 27:12We're just trying to do our thing.
- 27:14But I think when people see a bourbon, they think like, you
- 27:17know, big distillery, all this money.
- 27:19And so in the beginning, it was rough, but now with all the
- 27:21awards and stuff, we're kind of just got our blinders on and
- 27:24people know it tastes good. And now we got the single
- 27:26barrel. And, you know, now we got this.
- 27:28And it's kind of funny, people that never want to try this, but
- 27:31try this now they're gonna go buy this.
- 27:33Well, it's cool. So yeah, I think it's just, it's
- 27:35like being a musician. And Taylor knows this too.
- 27:37Like if you just stick around long enough.
- 27:39Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, I know, Tyler.
- 27:41You know what I mean. And that's that's kind of where
- 27:42I think where we're at. Something's going to happen.
- 27:44Well, it's just, you know, like I said before, I think time's
- 27:47the last ingredient sometimes, you know?
- 27:48Yeah, because a lot of people start music or they start a
- 27:50brand and in a year they go, holy shit, this is hard.
- 27:52And they give up, you know what I mean?
- 27:53So. Yeah.
- 27:54Talk about that too, because a lot of people and you see the
- 27:58commercials and you see these celebrities running around and
- 28:00they just stick a name on a on a brand.
- 28:03Some of like, like a like a big artist or something.
- 28:05Yeah. And.
- 28:06And, you know, I don't miss any names, not that they're coming
- 28:08on this podcast, but I like they've got big whiskey brands
- 28:12and they've got big just just big spirit brands.
- 28:15And they're just lending their name to it.
- 28:16They're getting paid for. It they're licensing it, yes.
- 28:19You know, and you know, but you're not doing that.
- 28:21You're actually hands on this thing.
- 28:22Yeah, totally. Since day one.
- 28:24Yeah, well, a lot of people assume that sometimes where
- 28:26they're like, let's say they're just from somewhere else out in
- 28:28the country and they always think I'm a country artist
- 28:30because my name sounds pretty country Taliboon.
- 28:32You know, it's all I'll see reviews, country artists.
- 28:34I'm like, you didn't even listen to my music.
- 28:36Like what? But who cares what?
- 28:38But but a lot of people, they assume that and then eventually
- 28:41I think when they kind of like kind of peel the onion a little
- 28:43bit and go, oh, no, they're actually running it.
- 28:45Then people go, wow, it's a father son thing, right.
- 28:47And then it's cool. But dude, there's always, I
- 28:49mean, we could talk about a million of them where the artist
- 28:52is on it and the artist is like sober and you're like, well,
- 28:55they didn't do. Anything and I think.
- 28:57You know which one I'm talking about.
- 28:58I do, I do and. There's some of my favorite
- 29:01artists. Yeah, yes.
- 29:02And they're and they're doing commercials for the brand.
- 29:04And I go. Yeah, but you know what, man?
- 29:06If you were that guy, yeah, that's nothing we're talking
- 29:09about. You're like, oh man, it's money,
- 29:10you know what I mean? So.
- 29:11The rest of the band is partaking, Yeah, If that's.
- 29:13Yeah, but you know, there's there's some good brands out
- 29:15there that are with artists. But you know, one that blows my
- 29:18mind is which I don't think is that great.
- 29:21I don't care if I say it. Terra Monte I don't think is
- 29:22that good at all, but it looks like Cos Amigos is 20 bucks
- 29:25cheaper and that's the rocks and he's sold.
- 29:27Oh, is it OK, He sold 1,000,000 cases.
- 29:29So people are buying it though, you know what I mean?
- 29:31So, you know, I think it also just comes with, you know, how
- 29:34you market it with the artist too, because I think the rock
- 29:37really did market it well where he's like out there in the
- 29:39fields cutting the agave. Plants.
- 29:40He did the thing. Yeah, but some people, they just
- 29:42put their name on it and they go, it's going to sell and it
- 29:44doesn't, right. There was an ACDC one.
- 29:46I remember just going through distributors like in California,
- 29:48I was going, I was flying to San Francisco.
- 29:50I'm trying to get like a distributor and, you know, just
- 29:53hoping to God they would take and they never did.
- 29:54But they had the ACDC 1 and I remember it came out and it
- 29:58completely flopped. You know what I mean?
- 29:59Yeah, the bottle was stupid. It was like a guitar.
- 30:01And I'm like, dude, no bar is gonna put that in their well.
- 30:04Right, he doesn't fit. He doesn't, but.
- 30:05I think they think there's an artist on it.
- 30:07It's gonna sell. I'm curious about there's two,
- 30:09maybe it's, I think it's the same brand, but Megadeth and Oh
- 30:12yeah, Iron Maiden. I have one.
- 30:14I think it might be the same umbrella company and they've
- 30:17kind of got their beer, right. Yeah, it's the beer.
- 30:18Yeah, yeah, I don't, I know. I've seen them marketing like
- 30:22their pictures are on the commercials and things, but I
- 30:23don't know how much involved they are.
- 30:25Yeah, they're, they're probably just getting licensed.
- 30:27So when I used to run the Shinedown studio when they've
- 30:29been Shinedown, yeah, I used to help in their place for like 8
- 30:31years out of Charleston. They've done a lot of my music
- 30:33too. We used to have, they used to
- 30:35send that to the studio and we used to have them like all in
- 30:37them in our window right there. And I it just, it was just, I
- 30:40think just a regular, I think most of the time that happens,
- 30:43those kind of breweries reach out, that's some kind of deal
- 30:45and they're just repurposing some other beer.
- 30:46Probably so because the artwork is really cool on Love.
- 30:48Because cool. Think about Megan Iron Maiden.
- 30:50It's all the comic books shit. I've got a big old somebody gave
- 30:53it to me like a canister where where big old bottle of their
- 30:57beer came in and it's got the mega with Eddie is their symbol
- 31:00on the front of it. It's like A and I keep it on the
- 31:02my top of my beer fridge in the garage because it's a cool it is
- 31:05cool canister. But that's maybe that's kind of
- 31:07what you and I've had both beers.
- 31:09Yeah, that was a long time. I was like, that was like 2016,
- 31:12yeah. Or some wow I think you can find
- 31:14it like cool springs, wine and spirits.
- 31:15I think you can find the Iron Maiden one in.
- 31:17That's cool. In the mega death, well I mean
- 31:18Metallica does a whiskey. The Willett?
- 31:20Yeah, Blackened. Blackened, yeah, but they they
- 31:23use guitar waves to age it. When you buy, you know what I
- 31:27mean? When you buy the bottle, it has
- 31:29a QR code on the back and you can scan it.
- 31:31It'll tell you what songs were played to the bottle.
- 31:34They're probably just bawling it and it's playing on a speaker.
- 31:36And it's just like the workers. Like playing energy, you got
- 31:39nothing else matters and fade to black and.
- 31:43But they sold a shit ton of it. Absolutely they did.
- 31:45We did. Have you ever been to Burn
- 31:47Beyond or Lateran Life and Louisville?
- 31:50I've been to laran life, yes. So we've sponsored before.
- 31:52I played Bird and Beyond too, and that's the coolest festival.
- 31:55And obviously all the time Black is there and Metalca played one
- 31:59year and I I I remember I played Bird and Beyond and then the
- 32:02next weekend's lateran Life, it's the same stage.
- 32:04And I had to come here to play Americanafest, which
- 32:06Americanafest is such a drag sometimes to play, but I came
- 32:09here to to do that. And because, but, but I'm not
- 32:13trying to talk shit about Americana Fest.
- 32:14I'm just saying that they'll put you in a random venue, but you
- 32:16always say yes because it's Americana Fest.
- 32:17So I don't know. I don't remember where I was
- 32:19playing, but I was like, hey, Dad, I got to go and we're
- 32:21backstage Metallica. And my dad was like, because he
- 32:24had his past, because we're a sponsor.
- 32:25And he's like, yeah, I'm guy Kirk Hammett's right here.
- 32:28I'm like the guitar player, Metallica, you're behind him.
- 32:30He's like, yeah, yeah. I was like, holy shit, so cool,
- 32:35man, it's so cool 'cause I was a big Metallica fan growing.
- 32:38Up yeah, so yeah, same man. He's got like a solo thing going
- 32:40on too. He does, yeah.
- 32:42He's got a little solo thing. Matter fact, when they were
- 32:43playing here recently. There's like recently, yeah.
- 32:46Yeah, 'cause they played Thursday, the Saturday opened
- 32:47up. Yeah, on the Thursday and then
- 32:49Saturday was Limp Bizkit, a nice 9 kills or something.
- 32:52So they had two different set lists and two different opening
- 32:54acts. God, Limp Bizkit but the day.
- 32:56But the Friday, I think Kirk was somewhere locally playing like
- 32:59some of his. Stuff he did, he did the Gibson
- 33:01garage. That's what it was.
- 33:02Yeah. OK, yeah, I saw that cool stuff.
- 33:04Yeah. I'm I'm a big guitar nerd.
- 33:05So yeah, you shred by the way, too.
- 33:07Thanks. Absolutely man.
- 33:08You got to check out. You probably have check this
- 33:10stuff out. Yeah, I.
- 33:10Listen to the music, Red. Thanks man, it's good.
- 33:12Definitely, definitely a Blues guitar guy.
- 33:14Yeah, you know, it's funny. I, I sit there and think,
- 33:18obviously you're in a music business and you've toured with
- 33:21a lot of different people and stuff like that.
- 33:23But I would imagine I, I don't know if starstruck is
- 33:26necessarily the, the, the right term, but when your bourbon
- 33:30became really big, were there any artists that you're out
- 33:32there on tour with and all of a sudden they're coming up to you
- 33:35that maybe, maybe had they not known that you did a bourbon,
- 33:40they wouldn't be as forthcoming with you.
- 33:42And they're like, oh man, you know?
- 33:44I think, I think when the bourbon got bigger, then artists
- 33:49were like, oh shit, it took me more seriously.
- 33:51Yeah, because anyone, dude, anybody can make.
- 33:53I mean, Taylor's a, this is a studio, sure, anyone can make a
- 33:56record now. So everyone can be an artist
- 33:58when they're not really artists and so.
- 34:00They can do it under their sheets, right, Taylor?
- 34:03Yeah, conversation we had earlier.
- 34:05Hundred 120,000 songs drop a day, right?
- 34:07And so I'm saying is now being an artist is just like so
- 34:09common. Yeah.
- 34:10And so I think when I came out with this, it was like, oh, he's
- 34:13serious, you know what I mean? So I think more people took more
- 34:15serious after this came out. Yeah, I mean.
- 34:17Especially, yeah, that you've got this, that you had to push
- 34:21to get that to Tennessee. I'm still, I'm sure you're still
- 34:23striving to get other places. We'll get to that.
- 34:25But not only do you have this and that, you've got a single
- 34:27barrel. You mentioned earlier too that
- 34:29you it's a collab with Bardstown.
- 34:31Yeah, yeah. So.
- 34:32To your point, it's like we're not just laying on one thing,
- 34:34we're not just sticking with one thing.
- 34:35We're going to keep growing this thing as much as we can.
- 34:38Plowing ahead, you know. Yeah, Well, you know, I think it
- 34:40makes it more exciting. If it was just still this, you'd
- 34:42be like, oh, that's cool. Yeah.
- 34:43But now we got three things, which I think that's pretty darn
- 34:46neat. You.
- 34:46Know what I mean? So it's great something really
- 34:48be proud and I'm sure you're not done yet.
- 34:50Yeah, I mean, I'd love to do a rye.
- 34:52I'd love to do one day like an actual aged beer in bourbon, you
- 34:58know that'd. Be cool in your own bourbon
- 35:00barrels. Yeah, that'd be neat.
- 35:01Wouldn't that be? Cool, you got to have the money
- 35:02to do that. You know, I and I wanted to go
- 35:04back to the beer. I mean, I know we're jumping
- 35:06around because you know, you're like, like I said earlier, like
- 35:08the Renaissance man, you do so much, but you know, being a beer
- 35:12podcast too. I, I, I sat there and going man,
- 35:15so you got this beer. It's a pilsner.
- 35:19What else is coming next? I mean, are you are you got more
- 35:22craft beer options coming down a lot?
- 35:25Well, I'd like to do the. I'd like to do the bourbon age
- 35:28thing, but the moment we got to prove this one, because it's
- 35:32been three years doing it with distribution just basically kind
- 35:36of started up again. Well, for Tennessee it was 2
- 35:38weeks ago, but for South Carolina, I just got the whole
- 35:41state and man, we're with a wine distributor that has a beer
- 35:46license and they are hustlers. And so, you know, sometimes you,
- 35:51you get with the big distributors and nothing that
- 35:52freaking happens. So it's just like a, you just
- 35:55got to kind of find your place and stuff.
- 35:56And so now that this is starting to kind of get a thing as on
- 35:58untapped, I saw you're untapped. What do you call it?
- 36:01Brew yeast works. Oh.
- 36:04Yeah, that's so that's so my that's your home.
- 36:06Yeah, my home brewery is called yeast infection.
- 36:09Brewery. Yeah.
- 36:10So I was looking at it. I was like, yeah, yeah.
- 36:12Oh, that's him. Yeah, I knew it was you.
- 36:14So when I check in at home, I just check in at yeast
- 36:16infection. But I love Untapped, and then
- 36:18every day I get on there like, shit, we're getting more
- 36:20placements. Yeah.
- 36:20We're we're both on and we talk about it all the time.
- 36:22It's the shit. Yeah, I think it shows people
- 36:24like, you know, once you get it. So we have three accounts, by
- 36:26the way. I don't know how that happened,
- 36:27really. There's three different Boone's
- 36:29beers. I gotta find, I gotta find
- 36:30there's. One called Boone's Bourbon and
- 36:31there's one called Holy City People still posting that one.
- 36:33Then there's then there's, there's the pills in there, but
- 36:35I don't give a shit. People are posting about it.
- 36:36But the next thing, man, I think the biggest next thing is I just
- 36:41need to get this in a lot of bars.
- 36:42You know what I mean? Because we're stores are pretty
- 36:44easy for us because I do tastings like 3 or 4 days a week
- 36:48if I'm here. And then I'm next week I'm back
- 36:50in Kentucky doing them where I stand there at a store and go,
- 36:52Hey, taste my stuff and I always sell cuz I'm like I say I'm the
- 36:54owner and build like, well, it's crazy.
- 36:55And I sign them. And so with this, my goal, well,
- 36:58it's easy. All my store accounts picked it
- 37:00up cuz I go, cool, you'll be here anyway.
- 37:02But bars, I'm like, man, I, I really need to like if I can get
- 37:06gosh, 40 bars in Nashville, they'll be buying it every day.
- 37:09I'm. Going to go knock on the doors
- 37:10for you and be like get that Boone's beer yeah, we're.
- 37:13Do it putting the word. We're putting the word out.
- 37:14Already. Hey, man.
- 37:15Yeah, hey, yeah. I got AI, got a buddy.
- 37:19He's my friend, he's got. A yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 37:21I know. I remember him.
- 37:22I met him yesterday. Hey, you know what we got to
- 37:24talk about? What?
- 37:25We got to have the in depth conversation because we do it a
- 37:28lot on the podcast, the untapped app and the rating system.
- 37:32Yeah. What do you look at?
- 37:33I mean, you're, you're the, you're the Otter now with the
- 37:36beer. Some dude gave me like 1/2 star
- 37:38there and said man. Punch that guy.
- 37:40And it was at our biggest bar in Charleston.
- 37:42What does he know? He probably don't even like
- 37:43pills. Oh, dude, he's probably just
- 37:45some freaking loser. No, I know.
- 37:47No it you know, but he's. Probably a Red Sox fan.
- 37:49Yeah, there you go. Probably a Cardinals fan.
- 37:51You know Cubs. Fan, You guys are big baseball
- 37:53guys, yeah. I grew up in Cincinnati.
- 37:55I'm a die hard Reds fan guys. Well, I think that that I think
- 37:59if you get at least a 3 1/2, it's whatever, you know, I mean,
- 38:01yeah, you know, 'cause people are just like, how can you
- 38:04always be a five star every time?
- 38:06Yeah. But that you can't be half star
- 38:07like people that give half stars are usually just say I don't
- 38:10like pilsners, don't drink the damn pilsner then that's.
- 38:13True. I think that's OK.
- 38:14Yeah. So people ask all the time why
- 38:16didn't do an IPA? You know, because I'm an IPA
- 38:18drinker. So, you know, you're not, you
- 38:19can't please anybody. No.
- 38:21Or you can't please everybody. Can't I think you take based on
- 38:23everybody we've talked to brewery wise, you take that
- 38:25untapped with a grain of salt. So it's almost remember it's
- 38:28some classes you'd have in school and they're like maybe
- 38:30sometimes they throw out the high score and they throw out
- 38:32the low score and kind of pick. But in the mid and middle, yeah.
- 38:34You know. Well it's like Yelp.
- 38:36I don't believe all the Yelp reviews.
- 38:37It's just some crotchty pissed off person.
- 38:39This restaurant was terrible, you know what I mean?
- 38:41So, but I think back in the day, South Park made an episode about
- 38:44that where people that were Yelp reviews that they thought they
- 38:47were like, you know, incredible. I think now all those reviews
- 38:50people don't really take because, you know, I mean, dude,
- 38:52people, when we started this, they used to go to other
- 38:55competitors. I don't know why they did this.
- 38:57They would give us one star review on Total Wine and so it
- 38:59made a review go way down and like, why would you do that?
- 39:02And we knew who it was, like just some competitors.
- 39:04So that's why I don't really believe in them so much.
- 39:07You know, yeah, it's got, I think we had one Brewer that so
- 39:09we don't look at the stars, we maybe look at the comments.
- 39:11If somebody throws a like I just said, I don't like Pilsner, so I
- 39:14gave her a low score. Well, yeah, I mean, I I had, we
- 39:18do beer exchanges with people and a while back I had a what
- 39:22was it? The the pickle beer.
- 39:26The spicy pickle beer. The famous pickle.
- 39:27Beer, and who makes that? This one was the steel and I.
- 39:32Had one recently. It was all.
- 39:33Right. I took three sips of it and I
- 39:34said, I can't do this again. But you know what though?
- 39:36I didn't even rate it. I'm not going to rate stuff like
- 39:38that. If I don't like it, you know,
- 39:40someone else might love it, somebody else might love it.
- 39:42And so we've, we've kind of laughed.
- 39:44We've had so many discussions with so many other people over
- 39:46time. And I've, I've got to the point
- 39:48where I'm like, I won't read anything below 3.50 on untapped.
- 39:52Yeah, if it's anything below that, I just say, you know what?
- 39:55Nope, I'm not gonna read it out of out of due respect.
- 39:58I mean, I mean, if you're a small business guy that that
- 40:02might be something huge for you. So why?
- 40:04So why would you mess somebody up?
- 40:06Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like it doesn't hurt you, you
- 40:08know what I mean? So why?
- 40:10You know what I mean? So just be cool.
- 40:11Like, yeah, it's OK. Yeah, it could be.
- 40:13I hope in in your case in any burgers case if somebody leaves
- 40:16a low star or like 1/2 star they put a comment that you can.
- 40:19That way you can just see how stupid they are.
- 40:21Well, the guy said man, and it's our biggest bar and Charles is
- 40:24called Rebel Taqueria, OK. We do a big festival there every
- 40:28year for Labor Day. My buddy Lewis owns it.
- 40:30He dude, he supports the living shit out of us.
- 40:32And he even texts me and he's like, dude, I was like, oh, come
- 40:35on, you know? And so who knows man, could the
- 40:37guy would just be a miserable drunk.
- 40:38You know, just don't be. I think I'm taps cool though,
- 40:41because I'll go on there and go, Oh my God, like you've been a do
- 40:44you guys have been in Charleston.
- 40:46I have not. I have.
- 40:47I have been to Charleston, yes. No, I've been to Savannah.
- 40:51We didn't get to Charleston. Yes.
- 40:53Well, Charleston's a big food town.
- 40:54Yeah. And Sullivan's Island is like
- 40:56the real, like, uppity up beach town area.
- 40:59And today we saw Pose is like a famous spot and like, we're in
- 41:02Pose today. So I love On Tap because I can
- 41:04go. Oh my God, we're moving.
- 41:05Yeah. Have you checked your On Tap?
- 41:07Because On Tap's got other features too when they would
- 41:09talk about it, but the find it. Thanks.
- 41:12So there's a find it thing on the app where it's, and I don't
- 41:14know how accurate it is. I don't know if people have to
- 41:16put it in there for it to find it.
- 41:18But hey, you want to find Boone's beer within 10 miles or
- 41:2150 miles or 100 miles? Untapped has that feature.
- 41:24I don't know how it knows where it is.
- 41:26I don't know what feeds into that.
- 41:28That's crazy. But that might be something for
- 41:29you to look at. If you have to be having an
- 41:31account, you got to log in. No, I think no, I like I can
- 41:34look if I'm looking for this beer right now as a as a as a
- 41:36just a consumer of untapped, I can be like, hey, is Boone's
- 41:39bourbon around? No freaking way.
- 41:41Yes, While you're doing that, I want to pour another bourbon.
- 41:43Yeah, which which has been taken up and while you're doing, while
- 41:46you're doing that, which has been taken up more of your time
- 41:49over like the last couple of weeks, months with the bourbon,
- 41:52the beer. I mean you're checking numbers,
- 41:54you're trying to figure it all out.
- 41:55What's the? Beer, the beer, because I had
- 41:57that show, the X&N, Yeah. And it was like over 200 people,
- 42:00which I've never done that before.
- 42:01Yeah. In Nashville, like ticketed,
- 42:04like hard ticket. And so I was freaking out
- 42:06because I, I was trying to get Lyman to pick it up and I didn't
- 42:09want to be like annoying, but I was like, can you please pick it
- 42:11up? You know?
- 42:12Yeah. And they picked it up the week
- 42:13of and they got a truck here ASAP.
- 42:15And literally the day before it showed up and I was like, oh,
- 42:17yeah. So that's what was my main
- 42:18concern. And then now the next couple
- 42:20weeks or make sure all my liquor stores get it and then I can
- 42:23kind of take a breath and then my next thing is like, all
- 42:25right, cool. Let me get.
- 42:26Because what I'm trying to do is prove the litman is go.
- 42:28Hey, it's in, we sold it. Can I get with the reps?
- 42:31Cuz that's always a little hard to get her.
- 42:32Like they call like a ride along or work with.
- 42:34Sure. And so hey, can I come with you?
- 42:36Can I hit a couple of your bars? And when you walk in as the
- 42:38owner, if it's the bar manager or the owner, they always go, my
- 42:42God, thanks for coming, dude. Yes, I'll pick it up.
- 42:44But if it's like, you know, that's another good thing.
- 42:46I'm sure you guys know a whole bunch of brands.
- 42:48If it's like the Rep of the brand, it does help.
- 42:50But like when the owner comes in, they always go, whoa, you
- 42:53came to my place like a town. You can't hear him and it and it
- 42:58freaking works. It works and I love work alongs
- 43:00and I beg for him all the time because then you then you got to
- 43:03build a relationship and then the next thing I'll do, I'll
- 43:05come back like the next two. You know, the next couple days,
- 43:08I'll come in once it's in and I'll buy like dinner and I'll
- 43:11buy maybe I'll go to the bar and I'll buy one at the bar a beer.
- 43:14Hey, I'm the owner. Can I, can I buy everyone?
- 43:15And was like, fuck, yeah. Then all of a sudden the bar
- 43:17loves that. Yeah, go, hey, he comes here,
- 43:19man. He supports it.
- 43:20So when you make your money, it's you got to spend it again,
- 43:23though. Yeah.
- 43:24You know, I mean, but then you're hoping that you kind of
- 43:25get. I always say you want to dig
- 43:27deeper, not wide because you go. We did.
- 43:30We went wide. We just went 26 states when we
- 43:32came out with it because I don't know what the hell I was doing.
- 43:34I was torn a lot. And so we got it in 26 states.
- 43:36I was playing shows all over. And then we then we realized we
- 43:39can't manage this shit. You know what I mean?
- 43:41And then supply those states. Yeah, then I they want you to
- 43:43come back. You're like, I can't come back
- 43:44to Nevada. You know what I mean?
- 43:45And so, and then we were getting paid from some distributors, you
- 43:47know, you we took every deal and some people were kind of
- 43:49sheisty. It's, you know, you learn a lot.
- 43:51And so now I'm like, hey, let's dig deep in Tennessee, Kentucky,
- 43:54South Carolina, California. I want to get back in Illinois
- 43:58and I want I'm trying to get back into Florida.
- 44:00They say if you want to be rich in the booze business, no matter
- 44:02what, wine, beard spirits, California, Illinois, Texas,
- 44:06Florida, because there's the most people in the stores there
- 44:08and you can get. And so it's like Tom Segura has
- 44:10a vodka now. The guys from starting to Philly
- 44:13have one called 4 Walls Whiskey. If you look at their
- 44:15distribution, every brand when they start, they do California,
- 44:18Texas, Illinois, Florida, because they don't.
- 44:20They'll make a ton of money and then you can go, alright, cool,
- 44:22let's do another state. Yeah, you can fill in after
- 44:24that. Yeah, I mean, Florida, they sell
- 44:26California. I used to live here five years.
- 44:27They sold liquor and beer and CVS, Walgreens.
- 44:31It's. Wild.
- 44:31And it's 24 hours a day, so. That's a different thing, yeah.
- 44:35Yep. So you can you can just get more
- 44:36accounts automatically. Grocery stores, it wasn't here.
- 44:38Like wine you couldn't buy in grocery stores for a very long
- 44:41time. Yeah, not so I say recently, 567
- 44:44years now. Yeah well good me ask you this
- 44:45just cuz you guys are. So get your thumb on the pulse
- 44:47here. Then they just kicked out THC
- 44:49drinks out of bars. I've heard that, yeah.
- 44:52Really. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:53They just kicked that out. And so I mean like, do you guys
- 44:54ever mess with those kind of brands?
- 44:56No, I I haven't, haven't, I haven't done that.
- 44:58I haven't done the non alcoholic stuff.
- 45:00No, I don't. Understand, we joked about it.
- 45:01I did. We did last year.
- 45:03So we were. It was just a fun thing we did.
- 45:06I did what was called the The Cider and Seltzer Tour for a
- 45:11summer. I had not really had any ciders
- 45:13and seltzers and it wasn't like I was.
- 45:15Just you're just trying a whole bunch of them.
- 45:17Yeah, it wasn't going to every brewery and trying trying of
- 45:19them, but. He didn't do it a second to her,
- 45:21we did a second. We did like a little fun thing.
- 45:23I'm like, alright, beer, We'll try like a dozen or so and then
- 45:26report back on a podcast later in the year.
- 45:29And I was just like, yeah. Yeah, we're not doing that
- 45:31again. Dude kids have it so easy.
- 45:33We grew up drinking like 40s and freaking Mad Dog.
- 45:36What was it called? Mad Dog?
- 45:372020. 20 Yeah, kids have seltzer. 2020 They.
- 45:40Have seltzers, you know I. Mean you guys, there's a I was
- 45:43in frugal today when I was picking up this and I saw just
- 45:46people just you could tell they're tourists right coming
- 45:49into town. They just got into town and
- 45:51they're picking up their high noons and this and cases of
- 45:53this, and I walked by this couple and get the watermelon.
- 45:57Get that's all. That's all they buy, babe.
- 45:58I don't like strawberry, you know.
- 46:00My God. Man, yeah, I just.
- 46:02Don't understand it but. I've yet to find a seltzer that
- 46:05I actually liked. High noon's the only one I like,
- 46:07but it's expensive. Is it?
- 46:08It's 20 bucks a pack for a four. That's the same.
- 46:11I tried the High Noon. I was like the only one that I
- 46:14could, I could go in on a little bit where I'd be like maybe I
- 46:18would rate that on a top was the the truly it was like the fruit
- 46:21punch or something. Yeah, truly's good.
- 46:22Yeah, not too bad. White Claw sucks.
- 46:24They mass produced it, but when it came out it tastes.
- 46:27I think it happens all the time at brands is they start getting
- 46:29bigger and you start tasting and go oh, it changed, you know what
- 46:32I mean? It tastes more chemically
- 46:33happens. All the time, like I think even
- 46:36Boston Beer Company or Sam Adams owns truly didn't we talk about
- 46:38that like recently. So that's.
- 46:40Well, Bud Light had a freaking seltzer for a second too.
- 46:43Yeah, there's remember. What was it?
- 46:48It's the Peanut Butter 1 screwball.
- 46:50Oh yes, the. Screwball went all over the
- 46:52place and then but there's some people to try to do some peanut
- 46:54butters and now there's one, the guy from Barksville Sports,
- 46:57Taylor Man, who I'm talking about.
- 46:58He's got long hair. He just quit.
- 47:00He just, he was just on Theo Von there today.
- 47:01He's got it, Caleb. Yeah.
- 47:03And he's got a tequila called Chicka Chickadee and it's a
- 47:05tequila peanut butter. It's gross, dude.
- 47:08Is it but? I think, but I think people are
- 47:10just trying to anyway. He was on Theo Von and I'll give
- 47:11it. I'll give him like, you know,
- 47:12Cap of the Hat. He was like, how's it going?
- 47:14He goes, it's the hardest thing I ever done.
- 47:16I'm like, yeah, cuz it's a brand is tough, dude.
- 47:18Yeah, yeah. Especially tequila.
- 47:19I would not want to get tequila. You know, I think a part of it,
- 47:22and I was going to mention this earlier, you if you can find
- 47:25Drake, maybe screwball was one of these.
- 47:26Maybe that maybe it's better than a cocktail.
- 47:30Maybe you can find that cocktail.
- 47:31Sure. Like something like a Christmas
- 47:33time thing, Yeah, you know, and. Ladies like it.
- 47:35Yeah. And the reason I was going to
- 47:37mention yours is your price point on this thing is beautiful
- 47:42for that, If you get something I love my my shit neat once in a
- 47:46while, maybe an ice cube. I love it neat.
- 47:47But man, if you love, hey, I'll just put this in a, in a
- 47:50cocktail in a, in a Manhattan or a we're no faster or something.
- 47:54It's a $40 bottle. You don't, you know what I mean?
- 47:55Like totally. You just spent 60 or 70 bucks
- 47:58and you put it in a cocktail. You sometimes you're like it's
- 48:00kind. Of a yeah, I see what you're
- 48:01saying. If you buy like a Weller 12,
- 48:02yeah, that you found for 120, like I don't want to put that
- 48:04in. You don't put it.
- 48:05I put that. I made it drink that.
- 48:06Right, you don't put in coke. You know, but if it, yeah,
- 48:07totally. I remember one time I was on
- 48:09tour, just graduated college, we did a show with Avett Brothers.
- 48:12Remember those guys? And then we did some shows with
- 48:15Spin Doctors and Blues Traveler. And then we did up and down.
- 48:19I actually came to Nashville, played the Bluebird, the open
- 48:22mic night, but I got my name got pulled.
- 48:23So I thought it was a rock star. And then we went back into
- 48:28Hilton Head in South Carolina. And this whereas the last show,
- 48:31me and my buddy Tom, we're doing this as acoustic tour.
- 48:33And it was we were having the time of our lives because we had
- 48:35no responsibilities. And so we're just drinking, you
- 48:38know, And so we're playing and I, we see this old guy, older
- 48:41guy. Excuse me, give us a shot of
- 48:45Pappy, like 13 year or something.
- 48:47Yeah. I was like, what the fuck?
- 48:48It was my dad. He's like, hey, came to your
- 48:50show. And then some guy down the bar
- 48:52goes, I'll have one of those and he put coke in it.
- 48:54And we're like, oh, what are you doing?
- 48:58That's the basic law of whiskey. Yeah, there was.
- 49:00There was years ago somebody. Was so pissed.
- 49:02There was years ago somebody I don't I don't drink Coke and
- 49:06soda. And there was years ago somebody
- 49:08had bought me a Jack and Coke and I I took two sips of it and
- 49:13I just dumped it out. I said I can't do it.
- 49:15This is gross. I probably did it 30 years ago.
- 49:17The only. Thing I do is ginger beer.
- 49:20Yeah, I like ginger beer. Yeah, my favorite cocktail is
- 49:23Kentucky Mule, if it's like that.
- 49:25Like with a soda, but not ginger ale, Ginger beer, right?
- 49:28You know what I mean? So that's my favorite.
- 49:30Scott you know, I feel like we could talk all day with this man
- 49:33about bourbon and the beer, but you know.
- 49:35Taylor's going to stay here till like 11.
- 49:37At 11:00 tonight, I. Think we booked it till 11.
- 49:41Yeah, why not? Cheers to Taylor.
- 49:43Thanks. Thank you.
- 49:44Thank you, Sir, He said. He didn't have anybody else
- 49:46after us. Dude, yeah.
- 49:48I think the guy's single. I don't know.
- 49:50Cheers. Cheers man, this is.
- 49:53Same here, Sir. Cut that cut that cut that cut
- 49:56that cut. That he's like, he's thinking it
- 49:57out right now. No, I'm just kidding.
- 49:59We got to talk about the music because you know Tyler, he does
- 50:03have a new single coming out and by the time it's.
- 50:04Kind of your day job it's. Podcast comes out.
- 50:07Yeah, you're going to have some new music out, man.
- 50:09Drops on Friday. Yes, Sir.
- 50:10Yes, congratulations by the way. Congratulations another another
- 50:14round here. Yes, very cool.
- 50:15Yes. What's it called?
- 50:17Put the hurt on me. Thanks for checking it out.
- 50:19It's got my buddy Peter Keesler Skinner, which we brought him in
- 50:21here before. Cool, yeah, man, it's cool.
- 50:24It's a it's a tune. I did my friend Trey Sasser was
- 50:27like, hey, come, I want you to record me.
- 50:29And I was like, man, I don't have any other songs.
- 50:30I just, I just did a record, which that's going to come out
- 50:33soon. But then I was like, fuck it, I
- 50:34want to write this new song. And I wrote it like in two days.
- 50:36And I was like, oh, I haven't done that in a while.
- 50:38And I think I mean, dude, Taylor's musician too.
- 50:40Sometimes you feel like I can't do this anymore.
- 50:41I can't write songs anymore. And then you do it and like, oh
- 50:43God, I did it again, you know, and we record it one day.
- 50:45And then my buddy Ryan Sanchez, who's my Co host on my podcast
- 50:48here. He he he he's he did my whole
- 50:51other record, but this I was like, man, can you like, you
- 50:53know, put your little, you know, pizzazzle on it And he took it
- 50:56and did some cool shit to it from the the stems you did from
- 51:00that session. And man, it sounds kind of cool.
- 51:02I like it a lot. So, you know, I do the song
- 51:05Wicked girl with also Peter Keys on it.
- 51:07And I thought no one's going to like this song.
- 51:09And sometimes you just put it out and then dude, it landed
- 51:11like NASCAR Fox on sports. They licensed it.
- 51:15Modern Blues rock on Spotify still has it on their official
- 51:18thing, Pandora, a whole bunch of cool shit.
- 51:21So, I mean, you know, now it's just fun to put music out.
- 51:23Yeah. And just see what happens to it.
- 51:24And it could be a one off like that like you said, like it
- 51:26doesn't have to be on a record, it could be.
- 51:27It's on the. It's on that vinyl I gave you.
- 51:29Yeah, the first track. Yeah, man.
- 51:31Yeah. Check.
- 51:32Yeah. There you go.
- 51:33Yeah, thank you for this. What did you say?
- 51:351 One of 100. Yeah, 1 of 100, yeah, I think
- 51:37that's like 9796. Nice.
- 51:39You have the first track on the back.
- 51:40Put the hurt on me. It's on there so.
- 51:42Steve, you can keep it half the time at your house.
- 51:44There you go, I should have run 2.
- 51:46I'm gonna, I'm gonna start. It's gonna start at my house.
- 51:49How, how does that conversation, I mean, I'm sure you you
- 51:51probably have known him for a while, but Peter Keys of Lynyrd
- 51:54Skynyrd, how does that conversation happen that he's
- 51:56going to do this help help you out doing the song.
- 51:59He's just a kind guy. He was a client of mine for my
- 52:02company Artist Formula years ago.
- 52:04Because he's like, hey man, which I get at most, most just
- 52:08musicians are, you know, they're we're like carnies.
- 52:10There's always to call it like you're trying to get, you do a
- 52:13gig and you find a good gig. You're like, but you're always
- 52:15like, it's like, it's like the film industry, like you're doing
- 52:171 gig. Like I got to think about the
- 52:18next one, you know what I mean? Because it's going to end.
- 52:20So he hit me up 2020. He's like, hey, man, I don't
- 52:23know how long they're just going to be around either.
- 52:24They're still doing it. And he's like, I need to boost
- 52:27up Peter Keyes as a thing. So he hired us to do a lot of
- 52:29stuff for him. And so then eventually one day I
- 52:32was just like, you know, you hired me.
- 52:34Let me, let me like do something for you.
- 52:36And so I was like, hey, you know, don't hire me for this
- 52:38service. Did a whole bunch of Spotify
- 52:39stuff for him. I was like, if you don't hire
- 52:41me, then can you play on one of my tracks?
- 52:43And he's like, oh, done easily. And so he played keys on that
- 52:47first track. And so then for this one, I just
- 52:49texted him. I was like, dude, I got a new
- 52:50track. You want to do it again.
- 52:52And then this time I hired him. So it's just like just being
- 52:55buddies. And he came on this podcast and
- 52:57he's just a shit. He's just, I'm glad to have his
- 52:59number. And I think one of that too, is,
- 53:02you know, with anybody on that kind of level, you know, you
- 53:05just don't bug him. You know, you just kind of like,
- 53:06hey, what's up, dude? You know, you keep it cool.
- 53:08Yeah. Like, even though I worked for
- 53:09Eric Bass to shine on forever, he barely talked to me.
- 53:12And then now they came here the last week, he's like, you better
- 53:14show up. I mean, so I think it's just you
- 53:16got to build a relationship and be cool.
- 53:18And now it's now it's a cool thing.
- 53:19So just naturally let it grow, you know?
- 53:22And also too, like, you know, this time I was like, I I
- 53:25deserved, you know, you deserve to be hired this time.
- 53:27So I paid him full price to play on it so.
- 53:29Is he? Is he local?
- 53:30Is he live? Oh, yeah, He's got a studio here
- 53:32called, like, Stone Stone Stoner Creek Studio.
- 53:35OK. There's a lot of stuff for
- 53:36Yelawolf. He's a rapper.
- 53:37OK. And the same place that this now
- 53:40comes out of Next Century Spirits, they make his called
- 53:42Creek Water. Have you seen that one?
- 53:43I don't know if I've seen. It's like a $20 bottle whiskey.
- 53:46It's one day old. What do you call it?
- 53:49It's the moonshine and light lightning, white lightning.
- 53:53One day old white lightning. And they use that technology
- 53:55told about and they flash age and turn it with.
- 53:56Yeah, that's Creek water. OK, wild, right?
- 53:59Yeah. So anyway, but.
- 54:00And they can sell for 20 bucks, probably because there's no
- 54:02there's not a lot of time investing.
- 54:03Holy shit, I bet that bottle cost them like $2.00, you know
- 54:06what I mean? So they make a lot of profit on
- 54:07that. OK, you got to think about that
- 54:09too, man. Price points a special thing.
- 54:11Yeah, it is. And then, like, when it comes to
- 54:13music, music's worthless now. Yeah, you know what I mean?
- 54:15It's because everyone go on YouTube.
- 54:17Yeah, YouTube is the biggest platform because you don't have
- 54:19to log into it, you know what I mean?
- 54:20So anyone, anyone across the world can go on it.
- 54:22And so music, in my opinion, is people all the time.
- 54:25And they'll bitch about, oh, Spotify's not paying us.
- 54:27It's like, well, they're a publicly traded company.
- 54:30They have investors. They have to, you know, make a
- 54:32return on their investment every quarter, you know, And so they,
- 54:35they just learned how they'd somehow crunched it where the
- 54:37artists get screwed and they're making tons of money.
- 54:40And so that's the model now. So, you know, music's free.
- 54:43You got to do something else to make money, you know what I
- 54:45mean? Well, you know, it's interesting
- 54:46because you were even before we started recording today, we were
- 54:49talking about the platforms that we record on and things like
- 54:51that. And it's even more for you.
- 54:54You're in the music business and how much from the time you
- 54:58started years ago till now? I mean, does your mind just
- 55:02blown how everything has changed?
- 55:04How you go about trying to get get your get, you know, get you
- 55:08out there to, to sorry, sorry, too much whiskey, Steve.
- 55:15No, actually, it's just allergies.
- 55:17No. How much, how much have you just
- 55:19been out there as far as like what you're trying to do and get
- 55:23the word out of who you are compared to the way it used?
- 55:26To be honestly, it's, it's kind of the same.
- 55:28I, I think me and Terry are the same age.
- 55:29We grew up with the Internet and so it's the same thing.
- 55:32It's just the platform changed a million times.
- 55:34So back then I was starting, it was Myspace, you know, And so
- 55:37you just, you just, you just posted all the time in
- 55:39Craigslist was a big deal. I used to get, I used to get my
- 55:42band booked. I was like 16 and get like $5000
- 55:46to go to Myrtle Beach and play like a random stupid gig and
- 55:50everyone's like, what the fuck? How'd you do that?
- 55:52You know what I mean? And so just the Internet.
- 55:54So I, I'm lucky to grow up with the Internet and see it change.
- 55:57I think some artists now they that they're younger and they
- 56:00see TikTok, they go, that's it. I'm a tik toker.
- 56:02And so for me, I'm kind of like, man, you got to use all of it.
- 56:04And then you just, it's just marketing, man.
- 56:06Like I, I don't find it that it's harder.
- 56:08I mean, I used, I will say this, I used to get paid $1000 a month
- 56:11from Spotify and I'm still getting the same amount of
- 56:13streams or probably a little more and I'm getting like 2 to
- 56:16maybe 400 a month. And so that sucks.
- 56:19But when I was living in LA, though, that was like my rent.
- 56:21And so I thought I was a rock star.
- 56:22I was like, man, I don't have to work.
- 56:24Yeah. And so that changed.
- 56:27But no, it's just, it's just marketing.
- 56:29It's just the internet's awesome.
- 56:30I mean, the Internet is probably the worst thing in the world
- 56:32too. But but it, but also, you know
- 56:34what I mean? Like people just get so obsessed
- 56:36with it their their brains get all melted but.
- 56:38Negativity and stuff like that too, yeah.
- 56:40Like your anxiety goes up and you oh man, like cuz a lot of
- 56:42people compare themselves and I always try to say that
- 56:45everyone's on a different timeline.
- 56:46And also I, I get caught up in that all the time too.
- 56:48Cuz I'll be like, man, I wish I was bigger.
- 56:49But then you go, where was I last year?
- 56:52You know, I mean, I've been doing music for 20 years, since
- 56:54I was like 16 when I started. I'm 35.
- 56:58And so I, you know, you do compare yourself a lot because
- 57:01you'll see a band that you came up with and now they're on a
- 57:04national tour. But then usually bands break up.
- 57:06So I'm like, oh, that's great. I'm not a band.
- 57:07I'm a solarist. I'm never going to stop, you
- 57:09know what I mean? So, you know, you just, you got
- 57:11to make sure that you also enjoy yourself because a lot of people
- 57:14just they'll get like, look at that Louis CK joke where he's
- 57:17like, I I love this joke where he's like, here's the guy on the
- 57:19road and he's driving. He's got a garbage bag in his
- 57:21window and he's just like, and he's just like, dude, just kill
- 57:24yourself, you know, like, yeah, I know it's terrible to say, but
- 57:27but like, I never want to be like this about music.
- 57:29I want to be like, dude, you know what, man?
- 57:32How about like just take a nap or go for a run or, yeah, or go
- 57:35to dinner. And like, it's, it's all good.
- 57:36Because also the day, man, I think this too.
- 57:38No one gives a shit. You know what I mean?
- 57:40Like no one gives a shit. It's awesome you're hanging out.
- 57:42But like you guys got other things to do and I don't have to
- 57:44be the biggest brand and then or I don't have to be the most
- 57:47impressive and you know what I mean?
- 57:48Like it's just no one gives a shit.
- 57:49Just just enjoy yourself. Enjoy yourself, but like you
- 57:52said, you've got multiple channels, so you can, you can
- 57:55kind of do some things that you want to do too at the same time,
- 57:57right? Sure.
- 57:58You're like, I can do some music, I can do this, I can do
- 58:00that. Makes everyday different.
- 58:01Yes. Yeah, Yep.
- 58:03Where do you spend most of your time, or does it change daily
- 58:06based on all the products that you have and all the ventures
- 58:09that you're involved? In it's, it's everyday's
- 58:11different based off like projects, but I spent a lot of
- 58:14my time on my company artist formula.
- 58:16That's OK. I made, I made that my day job
- 58:18and I'm very lucky how successful it's gotten cuz like,
- 58:22you know, hopefully I'm about to buy my first house here coming
- 58:24up. You know what I mean?
- 58:25Off off my own company. That's right.
- 58:27Yeah, but I've gotten really good at my taxes.
- 58:31Cuz you will get absolutely screwed if you don't know what
- 58:34you're doing. Yeah, I mean there's and I tell
- 58:35I had a musician I bumped into last week that I was in the
- 58:38printer's alley. It was called Fedora.
- 58:40It was it closed. It was awesome.
- 58:42It was so these killer family that owned it and it closed
- 58:44right across from the Blues bar. Anyway, I met him there and I
- 58:47bumped him at M JS right across from well, it's right, It's it's
- 58:51printer's alley. It's right next to it.
- 58:52But anyway, he was like, bro, how do I do my taxes?
- 58:55I was like, oh, hit my CPA up like that's my, that's my one
- 58:58thing about running my business. Sometimes I'm like, I mean, I
- 59:00got audited once and I, I I took a loan out.
- 59:03That's what it was and I didn't report it, but I got a letter in
- 59:05the mail. I was live in California and I
- 59:07almost like walked in the traffic and said I owed 60
- 59:09grand. I was like, what the, you know,
- 59:11it was crazy. And so but anyway, it's just,
- 59:13you know, whatever ours form of for sure that that's my that's
- 59:17my money maker. That's how I can go to dinner
- 59:19and stuff. But but you know, I, I, I'll
- 59:22always keep making music and then this is always cool because
- 59:24now it's starting to kind of grow some legs.
- 59:26So if I on the weekends, I'm full blown doing this.
- 59:29I'm not torn every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, every
- 59:31Sunday, I'm at frugal. I created my own tasting day.
- 59:34There I go, Hey, I let me do 12:00 to 3:00 and they go, we
- 59:37don't do that. I go, I think like the rich guy
- 59:39is there kind of walking around looking Thursday, Friday,
- 59:42Saturday, we're trying to get screwed up.
- 59:43You know what I mean? So like, I don't want to really,
- 59:45because I've been there before and they go no, and I'm looking
- 59:47for a high noon and I'm like, oh, OK, nevermind.
- 59:49But on, but on Sundays, dude, I'll sell 2 cases sometimes
- 59:52because it's just like these guys are like I'm in town from
- 59:54Alabama or they don't get, they get terrible liquor down there.
- 59:57It's ABC store and they go, oh, this is cool.
- 59:59I, I never seen this before. And I'll sell like, I mean this
- 1:00:01one lady one time walked in there two weeks ago.
- 1:00:03She bought four of these and two single barrels and it was like
- 1:00:05$400.00. I was like, whoa, you know what
- 1:00:08I mean? You're welcome, Frugal.
- 1:00:09Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Dude, I love Frugal Mcdoogal.
- 1:00:11They they that is such a killer story.
- 1:00:13What's what's What's your favorite store in town?
- 1:00:15I like Frugal's is good. I go to Main Street liquor is a
- 1:00:19lot in East Nashville it's really close and I buy a lot it
- 1:00:21can buy single beers cool over there that's.
- 1:00:23And I'm gonna talk to Aaron too, about getting yours 'cause he's
- 1:00:25a really good craft beer guy. I've.
- 1:00:27Always want to be. I've never been in Main St.
- 1:00:28It's really good. I don't know if they've got,
- 1:00:31hopefully they'll put your stuff in there.
- 1:00:32They've got a good whiskey selection, but I go in there for
- 1:00:34the beer because I sure they've got the latest craft beer and I
- 1:00:37can buy singles so. So what you can like mix match,
- 1:00:39make your own packs? Yeah, that's cool.
- 1:00:41So you can pull from anything. If it's a six pack or 4 pack,
- 1:00:44you can pull from anything. That's cool.
- 1:00:46Yeah, I live in Rutherford County, so we don't have that
- 1:00:48there. Come on, Rutherford County.
- 1:00:51But yeah, Main Street and then Frugal, but also when I get out
- 1:00:56there, Cool Springs, wine and spirits.
- 1:00:57They're a good one. Yeah, I.
- 1:00:58Really got to get back in there. Yeah.
- 1:01:00It's just, I, it I just, you know, there's just another story
- 1:01:03I need to get back into. Austin Austin's the beer guy
- 1:01:05over there. So if you're looking for the
- 1:01:06beer guy or it's Austin, we'll. We'll get back in there.
- 1:01:09I've been back for a year and a half and my thing was my main
- 1:01:12stores like, hey, I'm back. I'm back.
- 1:01:14Like I, I, I, I probably did like 30 tastings last year at
- 1:01:18red carpet in Gallatin, right? I think it's Gallatin.
- 1:01:21And so like, you know, I just was like giving a lot of love to
- 1:01:23stories that like, Hey, I'm back, man.
- 1:01:25And so I think the red carpet is picked up.
- 1:01:27The beer sinker's just picked up the beer Bluegrass just picked
- 1:01:29up the beer. Colonial, OK, It's a good story.
- 1:01:32I like colonial a lot. They they have like a really
- 1:01:34cool, like they always have really cool, interesting new
- 1:01:38pics over there. OK, well and then I love Old
- 1:01:41Hickory. OK, put in that one.
- 1:01:43So Neil and the whole staff came to show the accident.
- 1:01:45I was like, what? I think I'm doing my first store
- 1:01:47pick with Old Hickory. It's gonna be a bar stand.
- 1:01:50It's gonna be a different bottle.
- 1:01:51It's a whole different. No, that's gonna be.
- 1:01:52Those are so cool. I can't wait dude, I have a
- 1:01:54store pick I never thought we'd ever get.
- 1:01:56Those man, those if that store is known even a little bit for
- 1:02:00their store picks and stuff, they aren't they go what they.
- 1:02:02They had, they had that Maker's Mark one with the eight
- 1:02:04different staves. Did you try that one?
- 1:02:05I have no one's all over the place and it's got 8 different
- 1:02:07staves in it and they, they age it in a mountain.
- 1:02:10And so I, I bought theirs and I, but I thought, oh wow, you guys
- 1:02:12are so special. You have this one.
- 1:02:14And then I did a whole like work along in the East Tennessee for
- 1:02:17like a week and it was every store had it.
- 1:02:19And I was like, oh, this is just y'all, it's everybody.
- 1:02:22Oh damn it. But it was really tasty.
- 1:02:24Yeah, so funky. It was weird, like cherry wood
- 1:02:27and all that stuff. So.
- 1:02:28Anyway, you know, it's cool you talked about, you know, you've
- 1:02:30been in the music now for 20 years, and I know on your
- 1:02:34website, you know, let's talk about, you've toured with Sheryl
- 1:02:37Crow, Hooting the Blowfish, Christopher Cross.
- 1:02:40I'm like, good Lord, I didn't. Know who that was when I got
- 1:02:42that good I'll. Bet not.
- 1:02:43And then I got banned, you know, Boone Hall Plantation, you rid
- 1:02:45of that? It's in, it's like my last name.
- 1:02:47It's in Charleston. We we played it there as a wine
- 1:02:50festival. And I got banned for a year
- 1:02:53because my parents came on our they gave us all trailers and
- 1:02:56his whole band came. Like Kiki has been, her dad was
- 1:02:59the Tin Man, she was the keyboardist.
- 1:03:00And then and all these other famous positions on there, they
- 1:03:03all parted in my like little trailer.
- 1:03:05And it was wine festival, so it was red stains everywhere.
- 1:03:08And then I got I got a letter going you're not allowed to come
- 1:03:10back and do it all. And I was like, it was my
- 1:03:11fucking parents, dude. Like, yeah, it was pretty
- 1:03:14rock'n'roll. I was like, that's cool, Yeah,
- 1:03:16that's cool. We didn't.
- 1:03:17Throw any chairs out the window, but we we we stained up the
- 1:03:20carpet. The guy we dude, the guy came on
- 1:03:22there, the guy that like the director of the festival and you
- 1:03:24open it up, we're all like, and they get like, they're like, oh
- 1:03:27shit. No, I got, I got to tell you, I
- 1:03:31I grew up growing up, Chris. Lacrosse is a badass guitar
- 1:03:34player. Yeah, they're a little more past
- 1:03:37my era, but hootie and a blowfish.
- 1:03:40Oh yeah. I was the biggest freaking
- 1:03:42hootie and a blowfish blowfish fan.
- 1:03:44I used to manage driving and crying.
- 1:03:45Well, I won't say I managed them.
- 1:03:47I used to help. I'm on the management team of
- 1:03:48driving and crying and they cut straight to hell and Darius
- 1:03:52Rucker cut straight to hell a couple weeks ago.
- 1:03:53Yeah, yeah. I mean, I've seen them so many
- 1:03:55times and I always thought, God, what a great bar band.
- 1:03:58I don't know if that's the best. Dude OK do you know you know re
- 1:04:01cracked rear cracked view mirror that first album that was like
- 1:04:04the first commercial success. One sold more records because
- 1:04:08the 90s. Everyone bought CDs back then,
- 1:04:10but sold more records than any Beatles record because it was
- 1:04:13the most bar frat boy record, you know what I mean?
- 1:04:17So they made millions of dollars like gazillions.
- 1:04:20Millions of dollars like they were the biggest frat boy band.
- 1:04:23I was at, I remember this, I for work, it was in the mid 90s and
- 1:04:28I was covering an event called Farm We know Farm Aid and it was
- 1:04:32and. They did form aid.
- 1:04:33In Louisville, and I'll never forget this, it was the first
- 1:04:37year, it was like 95 when they were a big deal and Dave
- 1:04:41Matthews Band became a big deal. And I mean, there were so many
- 1:04:44people that were just like, Oh my God, Hootie and the Blowfish
- 1:04:48Man because they had and damn, I remember Dan Marino, like did a
- 1:04:51video with him and all that. Cool.
- 1:04:54I used to have stuff with Mark the guitar player.
- 1:04:56Yeah. And so he was an adjunct
- 1:04:58professor of the College Charleston as well.
- 1:05:00And so I was just like, I was going to USCI, thought that's
- 1:05:02where he had to go because who he was huge in Columbia, right?
- 1:05:05Yeah. I was like, I got to go to USC.
- 1:05:06If I'm trying to be a musician. Slowly figured out maybe this is
- 1:05:09not the place to be. Went back to Charleston because
- 1:05:11my loans messed up. And so I had to go back home.
- 1:05:13And I was, I was working at like a couple jobs.
- 1:05:16I was making a record with this guy, MJ Fick.
- 1:05:18And then I met Mark Bryan. He had a competition.
- 1:05:20He's like, hey, I'm trying to discover the next artist.
- 1:05:22I entered into it. He's like, you need to come out
- 1:05:23of my office. And so then we became buddies
- 1:05:26and so he there's a record. I completely lived off the
- 1:05:29Internet 'cause I thought my singing sucked.
- 1:05:30I was really young, but he played mandolin all over it and
- 1:05:33we just were buddies. And so I then I opened up for
- 1:05:34Hootie and Daniel Island in Charleston and then a lot of a
- 1:05:38lot. I used to go to golf tournaments
- 1:05:39with Mark Bryan. It was wild.
- 1:05:41And I'm a terrible golf player golfer.
- 1:05:43But you know, this the show Southern charm.
- 1:05:45Do your wives watch that? She probably is.
- 1:05:47I wasn't around if she. Did it's it's well.
- 1:05:50Are you divorced? I was like, wait to say whatever
- 1:05:55my hair. Absolutely.
- 1:05:56Well, cheers. Yeah, yeah, you're picking up
- 1:05:59what I put. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:06:00I was like, wait, what? Anyway, we went on a golf
- 1:06:02tournament once with mine A. Little more sure we.
- 1:06:06Went on a golf tournament once with the guys from Southern
- 1:06:08charm. I don't give this story is
- 1:06:09hilarious perfect. So the guy that Ravenel, there's
- 1:06:12a Ravenel bridge in Charleston named after his family.
- 1:06:14The guy went to prison because he was sold cocaine at the
- 1:06:17governors office. Crazy shit.
- 1:06:19And so he was in our foursome group.
- 1:06:21And so I was like, Mark, this guy sucks.
- 1:06:23And he was on the show Southern Charm, where it's like, it's
- 1:06:25Bravo. It's like reality TV, It's
- 1:06:27garbage TV. My mom loves that shit.
- 1:06:29And so I was like, this guy sucks, man.
- 1:06:30And he's like, no, no, no, he was, Mark's a great guy.
- 1:06:33He's like, we got to be Christian.
- 1:06:34He's a great guy. And halfway through the guy's
- 1:06:37like doing drugs and shit. And Mark's like this guy's a
- 1:06:39fucking piece of shit. Fuck him.
- 1:06:40I was like, yeah, totally. So, So Mark's cool.
- 1:06:44He was, he was a great mentor when I was really young.
- 1:06:46He gave me some really good advice.
- 1:06:48My buddy Box, rest in peace. He had the biggest DJ show in
- 1:06:51Charleston. I do this DJ show with Mark,
- 1:06:53with box, and Mark surprised me. You knew I was coming out.
- 1:06:57I lived here 10 years ago and then I left 2015.
- 1:07:00I moved here and he came on there.
- 1:07:01He was Tyler. Biggest piece of advice is stick
- 1:07:04to your own. You can be the cookie cutter guy
- 1:07:06and do the Broadway shit or stick to your own guns, do your
- 1:07:08own thing. And I think you need to do the
- 1:07:09second one. And I was like, man, I love you,
- 1:07:11dude. I still have that radio clip.
- 1:07:12I kept it, yeah. That's awesome.
- 1:07:13So they've always been really nice, you know, and Darius has
- 1:07:15always been, I don't really know him too well, but he was always,
- 1:07:18you know, cool. You, you see him a lot in this
- 1:07:20area probably too, right? I mean, he's in this area a lot.
- 1:07:22I know he does. He just.
- 1:07:23Moved to England. Oh, did he move to England?
- 1:07:24Wow. OK, something must have.
- 1:07:26Happened 'cause he's part of the Grand Ole Opry, yeah.
- 1:07:28Right. Oh yeah, I mean, I mean, he's
- 1:07:29he's one of the biggest country stars in the world.
- 1:07:32He Doc McGee used to manage him. And then that was kiss my best
- 1:07:36bud Sean, who Co found ours forms me worked for McGee and
- 1:07:39then he knocked off McGee a long, long time ago.
- 1:07:43He's like, man, you're not really marking me as the Opry
- 1:07:45guy. You're marking me as the Kiss
- 1:07:46guy with the marketing of McGee. It's but McGee was Hootie for 20
- 1:07:50years. And so then Darius kicked him
- 1:07:51off with the Maverick and then next thing you know, it was like
- 1:07:55country Darius Rucker. And like it was the biggest
- 1:07:57thing in the world because Darius Rucker had like albums
- 1:07:59way before that. Then we're all right.
- 1:08:01They're like kind of R&B. And they did that big country
- 1:08:04album like 2000 and like 12 or 14 or something, and it was
- 1:08:08like, whoa, blew. Up Yeah.
- 1:08:09You know, I think one of the biggest misnomers about
- 1:08:12Nashville is people that don't live here think it's just about
- 1:08:15country music, and you can really speak on that.
- 1:08:18It's not. I mean, there are so many
- 1:08:20artists that live here that aren't country music artists.
- 1:08:23Sure. Yeah.
- 1:08:24I I I No, no. Totally.
- 1:08:26No, no A. 100% it's but how much time you got left?
- 1:08:29I'll, I'll, I'll pay for the next hour.
- 1:08:30I don't care if it's good content. 8 minutes till 7:30.
- 1:08:34All right, cool. Well then I'll I'll, I'll get
- 1:08:36the next round because it's good content for me too.
- 1:08:37If you want, we start at six. Yeah, so that I'll get it to
- 1:08:41late. So cool.
- 1:08:42Anyway, cut that. No, it's good.
- 1:08:44So you leave that in. Yeah, yeah, all the punk rock
- 1:08:49guys moved here. So like all like Yellow Card and
- 1:08:52Reliant K all these bands that I grew up with were any, if you go
- 1:08:55see any country, like this week's CMA Fest, Yeah, which I'm
- 1:08:58staying away from all that, Yeah.
- 1:09:00But if you see any of the country artist, they're up
- 1:09:02there. They they got their own thing
- 1:09:03going on, but the whole backing band is dudes and tattoos
- 1:09:07because they're good musicians, right?
- 1:09:09The punk music's definitely back, but but they're they're
- 1:09:12just like I'm available and they they go on tour like you go see
- 1:09:15Morgan Mullins band, my buddy Hoogie, who is the tech for
- 1:09:17Shinedown, really good friend of mine text me yesterday.
- 1:09:20He's now on tour 3 Days Grace as their tech.
- 1:09:23We were hanging out somewhere, 1230 club, and then right next
- 1:09:27to it's like a tequila bar and you saw the Morgan Wallin Band
- 1:09:30and they're all dudes with gauge ears and they're all, they're
- 1:09:32all punk guys. They're not 2 country.
- 1:09:34Stars, yeah, but that's where the money is Yeah, you know what
- 1:09:36I mean? So but but there's a ton of
- 1:09:37music here that's not I mean, it's it's the music industries
- 1:09:40here, right? LA, my opinion it's more here is
- 1:09:43like the studio songwriting. No, no, sorry, I said it wrong.
- 1:09:46It's more the songwriting town over there is like the
- 1:09:49incredible studios are over there.
- 1:09:51This, you know, this, this person I knew, I'll put it that
- 1:09:53way. Same thing with you.
- 1:09:55The person I knew back in the day, she, she used to run United
- 1:09:58Recording, which was Frank Sinatra's spot.
- 1:10:03And it was incredible. We had a dinner there once and
- 1:10:05Eric Clapton's bass player was sitting next to me and I was
- 1:10:07freaking out. I mean, like, it's just, you
- 1:10:09know, that's the studio place where the studios are huge.
- 1:10:11Incredible. There's badass studios here too,
- 1:10:13but I think the more productions in LA and Nashville's the
- 1:10:16songwriting town. And so everyone's coming here to
- 1:10:18be like rubbing shoulders because that's it all starts
- 1:10:21with the song. If the song sucks, you can make,
- 1:10:24you can Polish a turd, but still a turd, you know what I mean?
- 1:10:27But if it the song's incredible, you can't knock it, you know
- 1:10:29what I mean? I don't have any musical talent
- 1:10:31other than liking music and, you know, asking questions.
- 1:10:34But I, I've always, one of the things I've found a cool and
- 1:10:37I've told other friends of mine that, you know, play drums or
- 1:10:41sing or whatever. And I'm like, I think it's cool
- 1:10:43to see people in other genres either play their music or
- 1:10:48support them. I remember one time being at an
- 1:10:51R.E.M. Concert and all of a sudden I
- 1:10:53said hey, we got a special, special guest coming out here in
- 1:10:55Nashville and it was Richard Marx who had lived in Nashville.
- 1:10:59And I was like wow, freaking Richard Marx.
- 1:11:01I was like, Oh my God, I didn't even know anything.
- 1:11:04I didn't even know he you know, I not saying I didn't know he's
- 1:11:06still around, but I'm going. I didn't know he lived in
- 1:11:08Nashville. Yeah.
- 1:11:10Well, you could buy a house here.
- 1:11:12Yeah, in LA, man, the house. I'm going to get here hopefully
- 1:11:16very soon, probably 2,500,000, you know what I mean?
- 1:11:20But still, that's a lot of shit fucking money.
- 1:11:22But I'm just saying. But like, whoa, you know what I
- 1:11:24mean? So I think I want to move here
- 1:11:25because like the guy, one of the, the fathers, we had the
- 1:11:29band accident, the band opened up first called the Photonics.
- 1:11:32There were these younger guys, they're like 14-12 years old at
- 1:11:35the accident last week. The dad, Keith Nesbitt's a
- 1:11:37really cool, you know, music industry guy.
- 1:11:39And you know, he was just telling me the same thing as
- 1:11:41like, man, when I came here, I bought my house with cash, you
- 1:11:43know what I mean? And so I think you can just, you
- 1:11:45can just really. You get a lot more here for the
- 1:11:48money. You sell something in
- 1:11:49California, you come out here and it's yeah, Texas are lower
- 1:11:52compared. To that but then also people
- 1:11:53that bought houses here in in five points they're like, where
- 1:11:56do I go now Now my house is worth a million but now
- 1:11:59Nashville's nuts man, it's just. Yeah, it's.
- 1:12:01It's insanity. Yeah, and it is.
- 1:12:03And you're right. If if someone's here and they
- 1:12:04want to sell their house and move somewhere else, they're
- 1:12:06gonna move it to Murphy's Hell. You're gonna do.
- 1:12:08Yeah, you're in Andersonville, OR.
- 1:12:09Murphy's which, which I'm not hating, I'm just saying like
- 1:12:10that's what you're gonna do You're.
- 1:12:11Like you can't do it here. Hey Paper house is worth
- 1:12:122,000,000 but. Chattanooga will be the next
- 1:12:15stop and and commute into Nashville every day.
- 1:12:18Yeah, good luck on that one. No way.
- 1:12:20We'll never do that it. Took me I haven't found their
- 1:12:22Smyrna. It took me 50 minutes to get
- 1:12:24here today so. Where was I?
- 1:12:26Oh, I went to NASCAR on Sunday. We drove through Smyrna.
- 1:12:29OK. Have you?
- 1:12:30Did you see the zebra or was the zebra out that way?
- 1:12:32What the hell are you talking? About you haven't heard you.
- 1:12:35Have not heard. This Taylor knows the zebra.
- 1:12:37Well, when this podcast comes out, it may be long gone.
- 1:12:40Yeah, they'll probably be. There's a zebra running around.
- 1:12:42Somebody somebody had purchased so Zebra, who lives in
- 1:12:46Rutherford County just. Some rich asshole.
- 1:12:48Whatever. Yeah, maybe.
- 1:12:50Some rock star. For the last.
- 1:12:52Zebra. So they bought this zebra.
- 1:12:55It's made national news and hilarious.
- 1:12:58And so for the last couple days, the zebra got loose the day
- 1:13:02after whoever bought it, and it's been on the loose ever
- 1:13:05since. It was by the Interstate the
- 1:13:07other day. Like they had to shut down
- 1:13:08hearts of I-24. People dude, it's a meme on
- 1:13:11everybody's account now. Have you seen this?
- 1:13:13I've never. Seen this yes, see when you when
- 1:13:16you go what the fuck? And you're like.
- 1:13:17My my dentist My dentist office in Smyrna today was posting a
- 1:13:21picture of a zebra in front of it like we got a special guest
- 1:13:24here today. That is so, yeah, I.
- 1:13:25Mean it is the craziest and. It's trending like crazy, like
- 1:13:28everybody, every business, everybody got that zebra.
- 1:13:30In but it'll post that today, yes.
- 1:13:32Yeah, you're gonna have to go find in.
- 1:13:33Maybe get in the car and go find?
- 1:13:34This you wake up and be in your front yard like.
- 1:13:38Stupid. Yeah.
- 1:13:40Zebra meat tastes good, man. Yeah.
- 1:13:42That's wild. Yeah.
- 1:13:44Out in the Smyrna. Yeah, South, actually South.
- 1:13:47And then I saw I saw something this afternoon where they were
- 1:13:51talking about latest was they thought maybe it had gotten hit,
- 1:13:57but it went off into like a rural area.
- 1:13:58And then there were rumors it was maybe down running around
- 1:14:01like bell buckle or but I don't know if that's just rumor, but
- 1:14:04they can't find it. They got there's people that got
- 1:14:06drones out like looking for this Dang zebra.
- 1:14:09I wonder how much spent on it. I know, right?
- 1:14:12I don't know. He puts a poster wanted dead or
- 1:14:15alive, Yeah. I need that.
- 1:14:17I need it my. Sister up in Ohio is texting me
- 1:14:19today and she's like, it's on the national news now this.
- 1:14:23I have not seen this. Yeah, that is so.
- 1:14:25You've been busy with your bourbon and your.
- 1:14:26He's a rock star. Podcast, you don't have time for
- 1:14:29your stuff. I'm out of here.
- 1:14:31No, no, I, I, I'm trying not to drink during the week.
- 1:14:35Yeah, even though I had a couple beers yesterday, my buddy Ryan,
- 1:14:37after we had a podcast here. But yeah, you know, it's just,
- 1:14:39dude, my hangovers are now two days.
- 1:14:41Really. It's terrible, you know what I
- 1:14:43mean? Yeah.
- 1:14:43And then now, now I'm getting like those depressed hangovers
- 1:14:46where I'm like, I gotta get a job, Wait, I have a job, you
- 1:14:49know what I mean? But like, I'm like, freaking the
- 1:14:50fuck out, you know what I mean? It's just not good, dude.
- 1:14:53Yeah, it's not sustainable to. But I love my tasty alcohol.
- 1:14:56Yeah, sure. I mean, it's delicious.
- 1:14:58Why you drink it in the first place?
- 1:15:00Yeah, 'cause you're like, Oh. Yeah, then it brings people
- 1:15:01together and you have a good time.
- 1:15:03But I just, I mean, I when I was 21, well, when I was starting
- 1:15:06this, I the reason why it's 117, they hey, do you want an 80
- 1:15:09proof? I was like, no, I want a high
- 1:15:11proof. I want to impress my buddies.
- 1:15:12That's what I mean. Because you're like, you're
- 1:15:13drinking 80 proof and you're like, well, let me ask you this
- 1:15:16because I'm now now that this is here in town, because you know,
- 1:15:19this is mainly in South Carolina, the ABV on this.
- 1:15:23What's your take on ABV on beer? It's part, and this is this is
- 1:15:26great for a pilsner. OK, You certainly wouldn't want
- 1:15:28to hire. I mean, it would be ridiculous.
- 1:15:30You know, it would be a weird thing.
- 1:15:32So what's a good what's a good ABV then?
- 1:15:34For different for different styles, sure the pilsner is
- 1:15:37good. I would say pilsner could be 4
- 1:15:391/2 to 5 1/2, maybe even 6. I don't know why you would have
- 1:15:42a 6%, but sure, 5.4 is perfect man.
- 1:15:46It's like it's nice and smooth. Sure you could drink.
- 1:15:49I mean, you could drink. I could drink 5 or 6.
- 1:15:52Are these and be and be and be fine.
- 1:15:55Be good. Cut the grass, you know, no big.
- 1:15:56Deal. Yeah, some of the days.
- 1:15:57So this is a good cutting the grass beer.
- 1:16:00It is. I was like, cool.
- 1:16:01It's refreshing. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:16:03You know what? Now you think about it, Yeah.
- 1:16:05I could be out cutting my grass and give me four or five and I'd
- 1:16:08be. Good.
- 1:16:08You'd be, you'd be fine. And if you wanted to get, if
- 1:16:10it's like you're going out with the boys and you drink this all
- 1:16:13night long, you'd be fine. Sure.
- 1:16:15You know it, would you? It wouldn't put.
- 1:16:16You wouldn't be like. Until you start drinking this.
- 1:16:18Then you're screwed up. You.
- 1:16:19Start adding to it. You start chasing.
- 1:16:22It Scott and I, we just did a the this podcast is coming out
- 1:16:26after the podcast that we did where we went up to Cincinnati
- 1:16:31in Cleveland. We did a big takeover podcast of
- 1:16:34Cincinnati, Cleveland. We went up to Great Lakes and on
- 1:16:37one of the the episodes for Great Lakes I was drinking a 14%
- 1:16:44stout. Jesus.
- 1:16:45No, it was pretty good. So isn't there a?
- 1:16:48No, 12%, I'm sorry is. There a law with that where they
- 1:16:50have to give you a smaller glass when they serve it to you, Yeah.
- 1:16:52Yeah, and tennis, Yeah, there's some weird stuff.
- 1:16:54I don't know if it's a law. Some places will hire ABV stuff.
- 1:16:58They give you a smaller glass, they give you a smaller glass.
- 1:17:01Makes sense. It really does make sense
- 1:17:03because a lot. Of people, you're going to wake
- 1:17:05up and go whoa. Yes, and also some people can't
- 1:17:06handle. Well, do you guys, do you guys
- 1:17:08mess with these at all? Do not you hate these, right?
- 1:17:12Yeah, yeah, yeah. So like, so nicotine.
- 1:17:15So yeah. So these guys started sponsoring
- 1:17:17me as an artist. I'm not really.
- 1:17:19I mean, we love those. I'm not, yeah.
- 1:17:22We love demos. They're from Myrtle Beach.
- 1:17:24But everyone now when they drink, they take these.
- 1:17:26Now it's just nicotine. It's not, it's not tobacco.
- 1:17:30It's just a pouch. Here.
- 1:17:31I'll show. You.
- 1:17:31But is it something with the with the alcohol that it mixes
- 1:17:34and? It no, it's just like when
- 1:17:35people start drinking, they start taking it.
- 1:17:36So when you go to like a urinal, they're always in them because
- 1:17:38people just spit them out. OK, I saw a sign there today at
- 1:17:40a bar that said we don't we don't piss on your Zen, so don't
- 1:17:44Zen on your piss or something. It was something weird.
- 1:17:48But anyway, I'm just saying this is like the newest, the the
- 1:17:50biggest hit in Nashville. Everyone's doing this without
- 1:17:53drinking. People always have them in their
- 1:17:54pocket. It looks like, you know,
- 1:17:55tobacco. Yeah.
- 1:17:56It's just weird. And the drinking culture is
- 1:17:58just. Nashville is just, like, top of
- 1:17:59the top. Yeah.
- 1:18:00People are just drinking all the time.
- 1:18:02Yeah. I used to go to Red Door all the
- 1:18:03time. And now it looks like an episode
- 1:18:05of like an 80s Aspen movie, you know, I mean, like, all
- 1:18:08beautiful rich assholes. And I'm like, fuck this Red
- 1:18:11Door. Yeah.
- 1:18:11At the Red Door Midtown. But it used to be like The Dirty
- 1:18:14place. Now it's all like.
- 1:18:16Turkey is it cool to be? It's cool.
- 1:18:18It's cool to be, yeah. Totally like they got a ripped
- 1:18:20dive. Shirt that they just bought that
- 1:18:21day and I'm like Oh yeah, you. Know I was gonna, I was gonna
- 1:18:24ask you, though, not to leave anybody out, but do you have
- 1:18:28some go to breweries in Nashville that you like to go
- 1:18:30to? Yeah, I always was a fan of
- 1:18:33Yazoo. What's the other one?
- 1:18:37My gosh, dude, there's one there.
- 1:18:41What's it called? It's got the car on it.
- 1:18:44I was the bar back there at the old location.
- 1:18:48Tailgate. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:49Tailgate. I was, I was a par back for a
- 1:18:51day. I walked in and I quit.
- 1:18:52I did. I was 25.
- 1:18:53Yeah. I was like.
- 1:18:54Which location out Charlotte. Yeah, the old one.
- 1:18:56OK. Yeah.
- 1:18:57So I walked in to go. You're gonna make sandwiches.
- 1:18:59And I was like, fuck this. I thought it was just like, do
- 1:19:03you know, beard stuck. But I love Yaz.
- 1:19:06I think Yaz is probably my favorite.
- 1:19:08Yeah. I met the people from Jackal up
- 1:19:09recently at Mother's Room. That's a great bar.
- 1:19:11I'm down the street from that. OK, Jackal up.
- 1:19:13I think that's great. Let me ask you this.
- 1:19:15What's your favorite bar? Your.
- 1:19:17Favorite bar in town? God.
- 1:19:19Boy, God. I used to.
- 1:19:22It's back in the day. They say you're back in the day
- 1:19:25one like, what's like, what was the bar that you just fucking
- 1:19:27loved? I love Roberts on Broadway, but,
- 1:19:29yeah, you know, but that, you know, that's, that's that's if
- 1:19:32I'm on Broadway, yeah. If you're yeah, then I'm
- 1:19:34Broadway. I'm not a big Broadway guy.
- 1:19:36I've got, I've got 2 that I can think of right now.
- 1:19:42I live in Lenox Village and right down the street from like
- 1:19:46Nolensville, there's a place down there called Hapenchance.
- 1:19:49And it's like a craft cocktail place.
- 1:19:52Yeah, OK. That's next to the pizza place
- 1:19:54on right now strip mall, Hapenchance, great cocktails,
- 1:19:57craft cocktails who love that place.
- 1:19:59And there's another one next to Grazon Main in downtown
- 1:20:03Franklin. It's called OB Joyful.
- 1:20:06Oh, I've heard of that. It's.
- 1:20:07It's owned by the same people. It's in the same building.
- 1:20:09There's like one wall, you know, it's like really tiny, it's
- 1:20:12really narrow and stuff. Same kind of thing.
- 1:20:14Great cocktails, craft cocktails and you go that those kinds of
- 1:20:19places. I you love that.
- 1:20:20I do love that I need to. I need to brush really hard here
- 1:20:23with Franklin cause Franklin is. Downtown Franklin's cool.
- 1:20:26Yeah, I love there's. A lot of good things.
- 1:20:28We're not. We're not doing as much as we
- 1:20:29should down there. You know.
- 1:20:30There's a tap room down there too.
- 1:20:32There's a little tap, room tap. Room.
- 1:20:33Yeah, a little bit. I've got to get these freaking
- 1:20:34kegs up here. Yep, that's.
- 1:20:36What I I've always told friends, you know?
- 1:20:37You put them at, you bring them. We'll put them in the car.
- 1:20:39We'll drive them around. We'll.
- 1:20:41Hey, Got. These in your mouth.
- 1:20:43Deep South, you got a keg now? Listen to me.
- 1:20:46Go ahead, Sir. No, I said.
- 1:20:47I got, you know, you get friends, come in town, they're
- 1:20:49like hit Broadway. I'm like, have fun, but I'll
- 1:20:52tell you the one place that I will always go to because the
- 1:20:56history, you walk in there and I'm, you know, I'm a history
- 1:20:58guy. Freaking tootsies.
- 1:21:00Oh yeah. I mean I.
- 1:21:02Just see every everyone from Charleston try to be a country
- 1:21:04star that came up here and lived here.
- 1:21:06They all played at Tootsies and I'd walk in there and be like
- 1:21:10man or the Tin Roof. Yeah, Tin Roof.
- 1:21:12Yeah. Tinder's a chain there.
- 1:21:13There's Tinders in South. Carolina, yeah.
- 1:21:15I used to work down on Music Row, though.
- 1:21:16But you know, we used to always go down Tin Roof, get off work
- 1:21:20and down there. The one to Mumbrian?
- 1:21:22Yeah, I think that one used to rock.
- 1:21:24Yeah. You go in there, it's like a
- 1:21:25ghost town. Yeah.
- 1:21:26Well, and, and and for me, I mean, it goes back.
- 1:21:29I haven't, I haven't worked down there in like 20 years.
- 1:21:31OK. Yeah, we used to go down Tin
- 1:21:32Roof. All would you do on Music Row?
- 1:21:34I used to work on radio. OK, dude, I love radio.
- 1:21:37I I can name the call letter signs on so many stations.
- 1:21:41I I'm, I'm a AAA artist. So I have messed with rock
- 1:21:45because my opinion rock like Shinedown, good example back in
- 1:21:50the day, like, you know, Colt 40 or was it down a 45?
- 1:21:53Like the old, the old album. That's like the big one.
- 1:21:56I call that butt rock. And that's the term I call it
- 1:21:58like like, you know, it's it's not it is active Rock, You know,
- 1:22:02stations, but it's like butt rock was, you know, it's five
- 1:22:05finger death punch, all those, all those bands.
- 1:22:07And then all of a sudden the music just changed, right.
- 1:22:10And so I would do really well sometimes when the when the
- 1:22:13music was a little harder, like Eric Bass, he did a song of mine
- 1:22:17called Gettin High. And it's it's more like a Black
- 1:22:19Keys kind of song where the chorus is catchy, but it's like
- 1:22:21heavy. I did a couple rock campaigns
- 1:22:25where it was all Midwest. Because my opinion, what I heard
- 1:22:27from people is rock is dying for new bands.
- 1:22:30So they're pulling from AAA and they're bringing him into rock,
- 1:22:33into the rock format. And so I would see myself
- 1:22:35charting on rock as an independent.
- 1:22:37He'd be like Hailstorm shine there.
- 1:22:39Calaboon. I'd go, that's weird because
- 1:22:41because I don't have like a crazy metal name, you know what
- 1:22:44I mean? But AAA like you know, 9100, you
- 1:22:46know, but in Charleston there's a big AAA called the Bridge WCO,
- 1:22:50you know, but the but the rock one is WYBB.
- 1:22:53I mean here WROT like KCN in LA, they're the third biggest or
- 1:22:58second biggest AAA and I used to mess with them all the time.
- 1:23:00KX FM in Malibu. So I love radio and I think
- 1:23:04radio is still super important. You got to have a lot of money
- 1:23:08to freaking chart and actually you can break a band for sure.
- 1:23:12You just got a lot of money to do it.
- 1:23:14Well, it's funny. So my background was news, so I
- 1:23:17worked here. I actually worked at AM station.
- 1:23:19It was a station called WLAC and I did news there in the station
- 1:23:24on Music Row. There were five other radio
- 1:23:25stations, the building and 105.9, the Rock, the River,
- 1:23:30WSIX, and then the Urban Station as well.
- 1:23:35And it was funny because sometimes you'd walk down the
- 1:23:37hallway and you'd hear about somebody that was in Rock'n'roll
- 1:23:40or whatever being in the building.
- 1:23:41And it was like, oh, there's Billy Idol, you know, walking
- 1:23:44that one time. It was David, you know, David
- 1:23:46Lee Roth, you know, walking down the hallway and I'm like David
- 1:23:48Lee Roth, holy crap. You know, So, yeah, it was, that
- 1:23:51was kind of cool experiences. And then I know for me, when I
- 1:23:55first moved here, you know, as a reporter, I would be going out
- 1:23:59and they would send me out. There was a there was a funny
- 1:24:01story. I'd only been here maybe like a
- 1:24:04month in town. So, you know, 2829 years old
- 1:24:08coming to Cincinnati. And I remember one day coming in
- 1:24:11and I looked at the assignment sheet and said, cover a Garth
- 1:24:14Brooks news conference. Wow.
- 1:24:18And this was he had just come off a world tour.
- 1:24:21And I looked at the assignment sheet and I actually said,
- 1:24:25somebody said, am I going to get the freaking Garth Brooks?
- 1:24:29So I show up at this news conference.
- 1:24:31You know, it's an he had just come off a world tour.
- 1:24:33So there's media from all over the country there.
- 1:24:35And you know, I asked him some lame question like, are you
- 1:24:38happy to be to home or whatever? But I'd never done this before.
- 1:24:41I walked up to his publicist afterwards and I said before I
- 1:24:43said, can I just meet him? I'm just fan.
- 1:24:47Can I just meet him? And he came up to me afterwards,
- 1:24:49you know, I shook my hand, Hey, how you doing or whatever?
- 1:24:51But I, I got the interview, you know, some of the country
- 1:24:56singers in town, some others, everybody was always cool.
- 1:24:59The coolest person to me was the Oak Ridge Boys.
- 1:25:04I mean, older, older band, older band.
- 1:25:08But they listened to the stage and, and there was a guy for the
- 1:25:11Oak Ridge Boys, his name was Joe Bonsall.
- 1:25:13And I mean that was more my parents generation.
- 1:25:16I listen to music, but he had written a book.
- 1:25:18He came up, he talked to me for like 1/2 hour just about who I
- 1:25:22was sure, you know, and that and I was like, this is kind of
- 1:25:26cool. I mean, this is like life
- 1:25:27experiences, you know? That is cool.
- 1:25:29Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:25:30There's an AM station in Bardstown where they play music.
- 1:25:33Yeah, I always find that interesting.
- 1:25:34But maybe because it's a smaller market, because there's an AM,
- 1:25:37usually radio or I'm sorry, AM is usually like news.
- 1:25:40Bardstown, KY Yeah, I used to work in that area.
- 1:25:42Yeah, and there's a station we parked next to.
- 1:25:44I was there two weeks ago. My buddies do.
- 1:25:46I pissed off my girlfriend because I was like hey I'm.
- 1:25:49Coming it is. It is rare.
- 1:25:50I was like, I'm coming on Friday.
- 1:25:51And also my buddies, like we're flying in.
- 1:25:53And so we did the whole bourbon trail.
- 1:25:54Yeah. And I was like, I'm coming on
- 1:25:56Monday. But there's a station.
- 1:25:58I used to go, I used to drive up from Nashville to Kentucky and
- 1:26:01do it and we parked right next to it.
- 1:26:02I was like, they play music. So it's kind of rare when AM
- 1:26:05station. Does it?
- 1:26:06Is? It is, Yeah.
- 1:26:07I worked at a country music station in the mid 90s and that
- 1:26:10whole. Area but it but isn't the Opry
- 1:26:12land AM and they and they. WSM AM Yeah.
- 1:26:15That's AM and they do music, so yeah.
- 1:26:16And they and I don't think they'll ever change.
- 1:26:18Yeah. Well, I think that's what
- 1:26:20they're known for. Well, and I think years ago
- 1:26:22there was rumors that maybe they were going to change formats.
- 1:26:26Sure. And Vince Gill showed up at the
- 1:26:29station, like outside, and he's picketing.
- 1:26:32He's like, I'm protesting, man, this ain't going to happen.
- 1:26:35And I don't know if he was like the the influence of it, but it
- 1:26:39was like, this is the freaking station it runs the Grand Ole
- 1:26:42Opry. Yeah.
- 1:26:43I mean, I think people just know you gotta turn the AM station
- 1:26:46that's there. Maybe it's better to be the one
- 1:26:48station that's AM that plays music and everyone goes to the
- 1:26:50AM one. Could be because FM radio man,
- 1:26:53it is hard because there's the alt rock stations, the rock
- 1:26:58stations, triple AI think trip. OK, This is why I call AAA the
- 1:27:01spillover of Top 40. So Noah Cohen, the biggest
- 1:27:05artist of AAA because obviously he's Top 40, you know what I
- 1:27:08mean? But Top 40 is usually like Post
- 1:27:10Malone or something, right? And so now the Top 40 or the
- 1:27:13spillover Top 40 of AAA like you are a God.
- 1:27:16Like you'll be some of the Ryman if you're if you're like the I
- 1:27:19think the revivalist and the rivalist used to tour them a
- 1:27:21lot, you know, but like, you know, trip like to be Dave
- 1:27:24Matthews, Tom Petty to the next big hot band, you know, And so
- 1:27:27you know what? What's the big festival, man?
- 1:27:28I've always want to play it and I've always gotten close again
- 1:27:30on it. And then they don't do it live
- 1:27:32on the green right there downtown.
- 1:27:34Downtown, Yeah, yeah, they used to do it years ago.
- 1:27:37They. Haven't done it for like 3 years
- 1:27:38and I'm always, I know Gary Crane, he's awesome program
- 1:27:41director of Line 100. And I'm like dude, what is it
- 1:27:43happening this year? He's like, no, it's not.
- 1:27:45And I'm like damn it because they they can't get a good
- 1:27:47sponsor to help him out. And I'm like, it's always a
- 1:27:49sponsor man. People don't realize that oh,
- 1:27:51this is huge, you must have a lot of money.
- 1:27:52No dude, you got to get like freaking Chevrolet to like drop
- 1:27:55100 grand for that happened. And Lightning 100 has always
- 1:27:58been a station that's had like this cult independent following
- 1:28:02because they're not like corporately owned and stuff like
- 1:28:05that. And I was, I was part of part of
- 1:28:07corporate downsizing, you know, like so many others in the
- 1:28:10world. And you know, not, not bitter
- 1:28:13about it or anything like that, but things have just changed
- 1:28:15you. Just remind me I have to get my
- 1:28:16radio blast ready for Friday. I forgot about that.
- 1:28:19Wait, wait. I use.
- 1:28:19I use a radio blast. It's the official way to give
- 1:28:22music to program directors. And I use all Access, you know,
- 1:28:25All Access. And so John, Joel Denver, I'll
- 1:28:27say John Denver. Joel Denver Well, I don't.
- 1:28:29I know of him. I don't know.
- 1:28:30He's a radio legend dude. And I used to, I used to go to
- 1:28:33Malibu to his office before. You mean did the fires destroyed
- 1:28:37all the whole place? But I used to go down there,
- 1:28:39bring pizza and be like, can I work with you guys?
- 1:28:42And they used to give me the most best deals.
- 1:28:44And I, this guy, John Schoenberger, he was the the
- 1:28:45king of AAA promotion. And I charted once on AAA And
- 1:28:49then, you know, when you e-mail somebody and then on your
- 1:28:51iPhone, they call you, it says maybe block.
- 1:28:54Yeah, it was Brian Corona. I always remember his name cuz
- 1:28:57Corona beer. Brian Corona.
- 1:28:58He was the AAA promoter for Atlantic Records, called me.
- 1:29:02He was just in the middle of like grocery shopping because
- 1:29:04hey, man, this is Brian Corona. I go, hey, yeah.
- 1:29:06I was like, he's like, how'd you chart?
- 1:29:09I used John Sherman because, oh, that makes sense.
- 1:29:11And he goes, I'm not signing you because I can't do that.
- 1:29:13I'm the promoter. But I just want to say that's
- 1:29:15awesome that you charted somehow.
- 1:29:16And I was like, oh, what? It was super cool.
- 1:29:18So I love radio. Yeah.
- 1:29:20Yeah. So I'll be, I forgot.
- 1:29:22I'll be. I'll be going to radio on Friday
- 1:29:24with triple AI. Got to set that up.
- 1:29:25I've been out of it for a long time.
- 1:29:27I got out of it. But I just I.
- 1:29:29Just, you know, sadly it's kind of changed a lot.
- 1:29:32Yeah. I mean when we.
- 1:29:33Radio is not because dude, the Internet.
- 1:29:34Internet fucked it up. No, it's funny because we even
- 1:29:37talked about this like I, I can go on a road trip and I can get
- 1:29:42in my car and I'm listening to podcast for the Underground
- 1:29:45podcast. Do you listen to your own
- 1:29:48podcast? I I critique myself and you.
- 1:29:51No, I'm mainly me. Also the industry AF.
- 1:29:55Exactly that one too. Absolutely.
- 1:29:58Thank you very much. And you can have my Waze app on,
- 1:30:01you know, and, and then all of a sudden I'm like, well, is it a
- 1:30:04storm or something I can just put my little radar app on?
- 1:30:06Yeah, yeah. Ask Scott how I was the best
- 1:30:08navigator up in like. Just glad he wasn't driving
- 1:30:11because he would have looked at the radar and.
- 1:30:13Yeah, that's the best. That's the best.
- 1:30:15You're talking about wave, right?
- 1:30:16Waves. Yeah, yeah, Waves, waves, Yeah,
- 1:30:18it's awesome. Yeah, it tells you like there's
- 1:30:20a cop over here, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:30:22It was the best commercial that years ago and it was the IT was
- 1:30:25the cop was saw the the he was looking at the waves and said
- 1:30:28cop here and it goes. He goes Nope.
- 1:30:33Are you a? Are you a backseat driver?
- 1:30:35No, no, not at all. No, we just went through a
- 1:30:37hellacious storm and he was like, we're almost out of it.
- 1:30:40We're almost 45 minutes later, we finally got.
- 1:30:42Out. No, actually I'm not.
- 1:30:43I try not to be. Yeah, yeah, I never want to be
- 1:30:45that guy, but I, I, I sometimes do that.
- 1:30:47I, when I, when I tour, I always drive.
- 1:30:49Do you really? Oh, yeah, 'cause I want, I want
- 1:30:51to shut the fuck up, you know, I'm like, oh, we're getting
- 1:30:53there. Piss in the can.
- 1:30:54I'm just kidding. Like no.
- 1:30:55No. We were when I have to because
- 1:30:57when I go on tour, I pay my guys and then they get paid well, I I
- 1:31:01try to pay for most their meals I take.
- 1:31:03I basically create monsters because then they go on other
- 1:31:05tour. I had my old guitar.
- 1:31:06I love Jr. Spencer.
- 1:31:07He's my man. He came to Bardstown, oh, the
- 1:31:09whole Kentucky trip we just did where they just showed up and
- 1:31:12meet him stay an extra day ago. You want to stay an extra day
- 1:31:14goes fuck yeah, let's do it. And we pissed off both with his
- 1:31:17fiance and my girlfriend. But anyway, he called me and
- 1:31:20goes, man, you, you dude. I just got to tell you man, you
- 1:31:23treated us so well because he's, he's been a minivan since then
- 1:31:25and it's still towards me. Sometimes when I have a show
- 1:31:27like in Charleston or something or what I have many different
- 1:31:30bands I have like my LA band, which those guys are I can put
- 1:31:32my guitar down, they can finish the song without me.
- 1:31:35I got my national band. Well, they're freaking awesome
- 1:31:37too. But I got my Charleston band and
- 1:31:39they're like the Shinedown guys and it's like heavy rock, you
- 1:31:41know? Yeah.
- 1:31:41So if I know of the shows needs that, you know what I mean?
- 1:31:44So I hire them and he told me he's like, man, you treated us.
- 1:31:47So you paid for everything because you go on other tours
- 1:31:49and go I mean, here's 30 bucks, you know what I mean?
- 1:31:51So you got to take care of your guys.
- 1:31:52Yeah, percent. And I like to drive, though,
- 1:31:54because when I'm getting at is, it turns to vacation for them.
- 1:31:57Yeah. And some of my guys, we got to
- 1:31:59get going. We got to go.
- 1:31:59And they're like, OK. We were actually talking about
- 1:32:02this recently after our trip. We we were like on the road
- 1:32:05seven days together and it's. Four days too long.
- 1:32:10Was it really? Was it that?
- 1:32:11Bad. I'm just kidding.
- 1:32:13It's a. Joke.
- 1:32:15It's a joke. No, it was, it was really funny
- 1:32:20because I was like, we, we, he was driving on this trip and got
- 1:32:24into a really bad hellacious rainstorm up near Columbus, OH,
- 1:32:29and he's white knuckling it and I'm like white knuckling just
- 1:32:32watching it going. I'm glad.
- 1:32:33I'm not with the plastic bag. Kill yourself.
- 1:32:38We had a few years ago. We had a few years ago.
- 1:32:40We had a few years ago, we went to Cincinnati.
- 1:32:41We had stopped at Louisville at the night and got up early and
- 1:32:45I'm driving and I'm just like, let's get up there.
- 1:32:48And maybe I was a little hungover and I'm driving and we
- 1:32:51hit traffic and my Waze app did not tell me there have been like
- 1:32:55a big major tie up in downtown Cincinnati and I'm like spewing
- 1:32:59every, you know, F bomb you could possibly imagine.
- 1:33:02Sure. And we get into an area and I
- 1:33:05know the your house and get on your get on your Waze AB type in
- 1:33:08this road. If you if I can get there, I can
- 1:33:11get us out of this. Thankfully we did.
- 1:33:13So we're those guys we're not like yelling.
- 1:33:16We're not yelling at each other or anything like that.
- 1:33:18We just want to get the heck out of traffic.
- 1:33:20Sure, we knew if. There was a child locks on.
- 1:33:22I couldn't throw myself. Out of the car.
- 1:33:24I can't take this anymore. Was it the office or it's it's
- 1:33:29that movie where they they they destroy the printer.
- 1:33:31What is that? Oh.
- 1:33:32Office space. Office space where the guy can't
- 1:33:34cuss and he's like motherfucking does it completely wrong every
- 1:33:39time. Yeah, and it goes back to.
- 1:33:42The guy, the Walker's going by him, you know?
- 1:33:44I think it's a requirement if you drive in Nashville.
- 1:33:47So so the one thing I always skipped in LA too, I sold.
- 1:33:51I had a Nissan. So there's a Nissan dealership
- 1:33:53everywhere. I came here, got a brand new
- 1:33:55Nissan because I had a 2018 with like 40,000 miles on it because
- 1:33:59I didn't drive in LA at ever because I work from home unless
- 1:34:01I was doing other shit, you know, and so I'd never
- 1:34:04experienced natural traffic and I've never supposed to LA
- 1:34:06traffic because I work from home.
- 1:34:07Yeah, and my girlfriend works at the state and then she works at
- 1:34:10Fog Street where, you know, we're all hung out and I don't I
- 1:34:14don't experience it, man. And so, but the days I do have
- 1:34:16to travel, I'm like, holy crap, this is yeah, I do.
- 1:34:19This every day I mean. Obviously when I'm touring
- 1:34:20different, but I'm home, I don't, I don't community.
- 1:34:23I work from home. Yeah.
- 1:34:24And so I'm like, dude, this sucks.
- 1:34:25It's a blessing he does as well. It's a blessing to not have to.
- 1:34:28Work from home. Yeah.
- 1:34:29But I mean, I there was a time I've worked the same company for
- 1:34:32years where I used to drive from like like my house out to
- 1:34:35Brentwood, if you're not familiar with that.
- 1:34:37Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 1:34:38And it was like 9 years and it was just getting up earlier,
- 1:34:41earlier in the morning to get where I had to go because if you
- 1:34:45didn't get out of where I was by 4:00, I mean you were sitting
- 1:34:49there for like another hour and a half.
- 1:34:50There was, there was one year it snowed in the afternoon.
- 1:34:54There was a couple inches of snow, just fell real quick and I
- 1:34:57looked outside and started snowing and it's kind of like
- 1:34:59Godzilla is coming towards the building and people are running
- 1:35:02out to their cars. Yeah.
- 1:35:04And I weighed each other down. Yeah.
- 1:35:06I waited like an hour northern around get home.
- 1:35:09It took me 4 hours to get home. And I'm like, I could have gone
- 1:35:13to Atlanta in this time. Well.
- 1:35:15Can I tell you a funny story about getting the Snow Hall's
- 1:35:19Chop House? You been there yet in West End
- 1:35:21so it's a Charleston, SC staple and so we set there's four of
- 1:35:25them in South Carolina. This is all and this is coming
- 1:35:28to it next and buddy Justin Roseman in Greenville.
- 1:35:30I love Justin he's a shit and fall for Greenville amazing
- 1:35:33festival. I I headlined that last year
- 1:35:35with Victor Wooten bass player anyway, he's he's awesome but
- 1:35:38blah blah. What I'm getting at is I was at
- 1:35:40Hall's Chop house and it started snowing.
- 1:35:43I was like, oh, then screw it, I'm just staying dude, you know
- 1:35:45what I mean? Because it was, it was around
- 1:35:464:00. I was there meeting about this.
- 1:35:48And so I was like, well, I'm just chill.
- 1:35:50And then down there was like no one at the bar and I hear this
- 1:35:53guy just like maybe 5 people down the park.
- 1:35:55I goes, yeah, I want a bourbon coming.
- 1:35:57I go, dude, I'm a little drunk. I'm like, me too.
- 1:35:59He goes, really, you'll love this story 'cause I really
- 1:36:01screwed myself. And so I was like, dude, me too.
- 1:36:04Who's your distributor? Let me go.
- 1:36:05Me too. So we sat next to each other and
- 1:36:06the bartends were all hanging out and I was like, mine's not
- 1:36:08here yet, but it's about to be here.
- 1:36:09And I, you know, I had my bottle there and I go, yeah, it's talk
- 1:36:12about yours and we're talking about it.
- 1:36:13And I was like, you know, I was drunk, dude.
- 1:36:15And I've learned to like, shut my mouth after that for sure.
- 1:36:18Do you never know who you're talking to?
- 1:36:20Right. And so I was just like, you
- 1:36:21know, some people age their shit on boats like Jefferson Ocean.
- 1:36:24And I'm like, you know, it's it's kind of a silly gimmick.
- 1:36:27It was. I aged mine on the Mississippi
- 1:36:28River. I go, dude, that is so cool and
- 1:36:30like, you know, you know, and he literally walked away.
- 1:36:32I was like, oh, shit, because mine's on the Mississippi River.
- 1:36:36That's where age mine. I was like, oh, yeah, totally.
- 1:36:38Dude, that's cool. And and then I came to find out
- 1:36:41Litman owns a piece of it. I was like, Oh my God.
- 1:36:44I felt so. And the bartender's like, you
- 1:36:45fucked up. And I was like, yeah, yeah,
- 1:36:47yeah, yeah, yeah. That's funny.
- 1:36:48I'm not gonna say the name of it, but you know.
- 1:36:50You know Mississippi's way better than the ocean.
- 1:36:53Yeah, yeah. When you get those ocean bottles
- 1:36:55it says like Voyage. I know I'm like stupid.
- 1:36:57Who gives a? It is so stupid.
- 1:37:00Brad Paisley has one called, like, it's got a truck on it.
- 1:37:03It's called like highway bourbon or something.
- 1:37:06And they age it on his tour bus. I'm like, no, they don't.
- 1:37:08You know what I mean? So it's.
- 1:37:09Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't get the gimmick, but,
- 1:37:12you know, but everyone's looking for a gimmick to make your
- 1:37:14brand. Sure.
- 1:37:15Cool. Maybe some there may be some
- 1:37:17truth to hey, we are trying to age it quicker and we're trying
- 1:37:20to be truthful about it. But sure, it's not really as
- 1:37:23romantic as you think it is. It's not in a barrel sloshing
- 1:37:26around on the on the ocean. It's not doing.
- 1:37:28I think I think OK, like 2015 bourbon really had AI was like,
- 1:37:32what's Angel's envy? What's Elijah Craig, what's all
- 1:37:34this? And then everybody's starting to
- 1:37:36get into it. You go to any liquor store,
- 1:37:37you're like, what are all these brands?
- 1:37:39And now it's harder for a brand unless you've got some roots
- 1:37:41where they just walk right by and they just buy the DH Taylor
- 1:37:44or something, you know what I mean?
- 1:37:45So what about beer though? Is that kind of like that or
- 1:37:48they or is everyone always looking for something new to
- 1:37:51tracks? I feel like a lot of breweries,
- 1:37:52they come up with their new release because that's them
- 1:37:54trying to like make it more fun. Yeah.
- 1:37:56So yeah, I drink beer. I love drinking beer singles.
- 1:38:02When I go to Main Street, I love buying single the new ones
- 1:38:04because I use untapped and I I want a new one every single time
- 1:38:07if I can get it. There are a lot of really good
- 1:38:09beers out there. This one right here in front of
- 1:38:12us. When I go buy beer, I like to
- 1:38:17get new ones because I like my numbers to go up on untapped.
- 1:38:19Word. OK, but not also that, but also
- 1:38:23different. I'm trying different things at
- 1:38:24the same time, whether it be a a sour or a new IPA or something.
- 1:38:28So I'm trying something new all the time.
- 1:38:30They're not always good, but I'm getting new stuff all the time.
- 1:38:32So that's how I like to drink beer.
- 1:38:34I don't think most people are like that.
- 1:38:36Yeah, I think most people will go get 4 packs, a six pack or a
- 1:38:39case of something that they like.
- 1:38:40Sure. But I think when you in liquor
- 1:38:42store, Main Street's a good example.
- 1:38:44They've got they used to have. What's the one?
- 1:38:47Shiner? Not Shiner Scheiner Bach.
- 1:38:50Scheiner Bach. Yeah.
- 1:38:51No, it was Lone Star. Yeah.
- 1:38:55They would keep cases of a Lone Star has.
- 1:38:57Everyone wanted it, yes. And they would come in there and
- 1:39:00they would clean up. I like Lone Star.
- 1:39:03And I think that's the thing. It's like it's one of those
- 1:39:04things you can't normally get. Coors Banquet's another one of
- 1:39:08those things. I love Coors Banquet, right?
- 1:39:09Coors Light every all day long, right where you want to go.
- 1:39:11But Coors Banquet's one of those things you can't always get.
- 1:39:13So people go go in and clean up on.
- 1:39:15Yeah, they do, yes. I've been seeing a lot of liquor
- 1:39:17stores lately. Posting now that it's summer,
- 1:39:20they're not posting their bourbons.
- 1:39:21They're posting, hey, we got a whole stack of this.
- 1:39:23Come on down. You know what I mean?
- 1:39:25Yeah. Interesting.
- 1:39:25Get the light stuff, get some stuff refreshing.
- 1:39:28Yeah, that kind of thing. So you mentioned something
- 1:39:30earlier and I'm jumping. We're again, we're jumping
- 1:39:32around again. Five Finger Death Punch.
- 1:39:34Yeah. And I love that band, buddy.
- 1:39:36Hoogie is now their tech. Is he?
- 1:39:38Yep, Hoogie on the road. He's awesome.
- 1:39:41They're doing something, I didn't realize this in just so
- 1:39:42like two or three days ago. They are re recording their
- 1:39:45music. Yeah, OK.
- 1:39:47Just like Taylor Swift. Did.
- 1:39:49Oh, that's what I thought. You're going.
- 1:39:50At exactly she she did the whole thing, re recorded it because of
- 1:39:54the whole. Big machine Scooter Braun.
- 1:39:57They bought her masters, Yeah. She ultimately bought them back
- 1:40:00recently. She got them all back.
- 1:40:01Yeah, that's fine. 5 figure death Punch is doing that exact
- 1:40:05same thing. They actually have two or three
- 1:40:06releases right now. They.
- 1:40:07Have hardcore fans of their. Previous songs, they're doing
- 1:40:10the same and they even they even gave her credit, Taylor Swift
- 1:40:15credit as. Like, hey, we're doing.
- 1:40:16This we're doing the same thing because she got screwed.
- 1:40:18Thank thankfully she got her stuff back and she's nothing.
- 1:40:21So they're doing the same thing, which I think is really cool.
- 1:40:23And what's cool about it? It's the same song as you know,
- 1:40:27but they got a nice little twist to it.
- 1:40:29Yeah, Well, I mean, now they're probably different players.
- 1:40:32I mean like they're same guys, but like they play different.
- 1:40:34They got more ideas to it. When I saw Fighting the Death
- 1:40:37Punch, my gosh, it was it was cold.
- 1:40:39So it was like October I think of last year or something.
- 1:40:43I thought they were awesome because one biggest one with
- 1:40:45live music is. I was blown away they had laser
- 1:40:48shows going on. It's all about the live show
- 1:40:50too. Yeah, like that band.
- 1:40:52They're so. I mean I'm not the biggest 5
- 1:40:54finger that's much fan but man they kill it.
- 1:40:57Live, right? And Ivan's a great front man,
- 1:40:59right? He was up there.
- 1:41:01Wearing like a Tennessee jersey? Yeah.
- 1:41:04That's awesome. They're doing that.
- 1:41:04That's crazy. Yeah.
- 1:41:06Wow, for the same exact reason Taylor Swift.
- 1:41:08It is probably a terrible deal within their, you know, that
- 1:41:11sounds. I'm I'm in a label advance deal
- 1:41:13with all my music at the moment. I don't make any money from it
- 1:41:16because I took I took like a 50 grand advance deal.
- 1:41:20No, it wasn't a record label, so there's no services with it.
- 1:41:22So I just got to check up front and it was the dumbest thing I
- 1:41:25ever did. But I get it back in two years.
- 1:41:29I get all my I'll get all my music back.
- 1:41:30And I was like, and I learned AI learned a cheap lesson or I
- 1:41:33could have I, I had a record deal with big machine when I was
- 1:41:3627. Maybe I should have taken it
- 1:41:38because I worked with because he's got a whiskey too.
- 1:41:40It's it's. A vodka.
- 1:41:42He does a vodka. Or Borchetta.
- 1:41:44That's a. Whiskey too, yeah.
- 1:41:45Borchetta And so maybe I should have done it because I could
- 1:41:47have been friends with him and that could have been a cool
- 1:41:49relationship, but I didn't do it.
- 1:41:50But but you know, those record label deals, man, if you are not
- 1:41:54a big like OK country, My buddy Arles, he was a he was a guest
- 1:41:57on him. He was our first one.
- 1:41:59He got Jimmie Johnson's first record deal at RCA.
- 1:42:03He's still his tour manager. Jamie Johnson has never had
- 1:42:05like, a lot of radio, cassette radio success.
- 1:42:08But he is this huge artist. If someone wanted to.
- 1:42:11I mean, he did have record deals.
- 1:42:12He did. He definitely charted #1A lot of
- 1:42:14times. But you don't hear his music on
- 1:42:16radio all the time, I'm saying. And so if you're this big artist
- 1:42:19where like you have so much more to like, you know, leverage, you
- 1:42:22know what I mean? But when you're younger artists,
- 1:42:24you, yeah, you're taking the deal because you're like, Oh my
- 1:42:25God, MTV or whatever you're thinking of.
- 1:42:27You're like, I'll be famous. And so the deals are always
- 1:42:29terrible. They're always bad.
- 1:42:31The you, the artists always get screwed because it's the music
- 1:42:33business. Yep, and as I'm thinking of it,
- 1:42:35I think what happened was just like they they sold their
- 1:42:39masters. Whoever owned this just sold the
- 1:42:41masters out for underneath. You never want to sell your
- 1:42:43master, right? You never want to sell your
- 1:42:44master. But the but the distributor or
- 1:42:45the the label just sold it out from under where they had no
- 1:42:48option to even. Buy it.
- 1:42:49Yeah, because now it's coming into music is investment groups.
- 1:42:53So like, you know, what's the guy from Jersey?
- 1:42:56Jon Bon Jovi. No, no, Springsteen,
- 1:42:59Springsteen, you know, he sold his stuff for reason.
- 1:43:01Now he's a billionaire, you know what I mean?
- 1:43:02And so now like the Tom Delong from blink 182, he sold his
- 1:43:05masters for like half a billion because he needed it for his
- 1:43:08like crazy alien company that's going to start shooting me.
- 1:43:12And so he needed the money. I mean, and so now that's coming
- 1:43:15into music. And so that's that's why it's
- 1:43:17all chained. We're like, wait, we, I think
- 1:43:19what it is is these invested companies, can they go we got to
- 1:43:22get something for investors. Hey, we just bought some masters
- 1:43:24from this from this record company.
- 1:43:25You know what? I.
- 1:43:26Mean so that's but they can they can do what?
- 1:43:28Put them on commercials and put them in the movies because they
- 1:43:30got to get a they got to. Get a sinks, sinks, Sinks is the
- 1:43:33biggest thing in the world if you want to make money in music,
- 1:43:36touring and then sinks 100%. Like when I got the Fox Sports
- 1:43:39NASCAR one, I remember I was with my parents.
- 1:43:41James Farrell, my buddy, he's been my bass player in in my LA
- 1:43:44band forever and out of Charleston.
- 1:43:46I was with him. I was like my parents.
- 1:43:48I was just chilling out. I was like, I just got this
- 1:43:50e-mail from Fox Sports. Holy shit.
- 1:43:51And my dad, my dad just being like a dad asked for more money.
- 1:43:55And so I was like, I was like, I want more money.
- 1:43:57And literally they responded back like, take it or not, like
- 1:43:59because I had no over leverage, you know what I mean?
- 1:44:01Yeah. And so I got like 1200 bucks
- 1:44:03each time they use it, which it added up.
- 1:44:05But I'm just saying Syncs is the best because every time it was
- 1:44:07opening day for NASCAR, every time it was open for NASCAR,
- 1:44:09they use it on TV, OK. You got paid every time, every
- 1:44:11time. And then now I still get a
- 1:44:13residual from BMI. That's my pro BMI ass kept CSEC.
- 1:44:17Those are like the three biggest ones.
- 1:44:18But do you want to make money on that?
- 1:44:20It's it's syncs and video games. Like if you get a song in like
- 1:44:22FIFA world sports, like you're, you're a millionaire, you know,
- 1:44:25it's crazy. So that's the biggest thing that
- 1:44:27syncs, but it's hard to get it. It's really hard to get a sync.
- 1:44:30Somebody's got AI would think somebody behind the scenes
- 1:44:32marketing something has to put those together and find a random
- 1:44:36song or find something. I think that works perfectly.
- 1:44:38It's like a champion, it's like a distributor.
- 1:44:39They have to champion you. You can get a a sync deal and I
- 1:44:43have many of them and I've gotten a couple weird ones.
- 1:44:48They paid like 400 bucks. You know what I mean?
- 1:44:50But if I had a big guy, well, actually I had a big one years
- 1:44:53ago and that's how screw the music industry is.
- 1:44:55I took the YouTube deal out of Tune Core, which is a
- 1:44:58distribution company, which I still have my back catalog on
- 1:45:01them. I click the YouTube button and
- 1:45:03this is a big, this is a huge thing in the music industry.
- 1:45:05Back in the day, if you let someone third party you're
- 1:45:08you're publishing, that means they control all your sync
- 1:45:11deals. And so I had to deal with
- 1:45:12Lionsgate Films in 2017 actually with this song Front Page Show
- 1:45:17on the back of that. I couldn't get it because Tune
- 1:45:19Core owned it and it was like 10 grand.
- 1:45:21And I was so poor living here when I was 25.
- 1:45:23And that would have changed my life, you know?
- 1:45:25I mean, and so syncs are huge, you know, I mean, and so you
- 1:45:28always want a non exclusive deal.
- 1:45:31You can take an exclusive deal. That means you can only work
- 1:45:33with that sync Rep. And then guess what man, you can
- 1:45:35be going up and the syncrop leaves and no one gives a fuck
- 1:45:38about. Right, you're right.
- 1:45:38You know what I mean. Yeah.
- 1:45:39And so the non exclusive gets you out to every not.
- 1:45:41Exclusive. You can just sign with anybody.
- 1:45:42Yeah, OK. And that's how you should always
- 1:45:43do it. And and now they're starting to
- 1:45:44realize no one's gonna take a deal unless it's not exclusive.
- 1:45:46Yeah, You mean. But back then that the major.
- 1:45:48You put stars in your eyes. Oh, exclusive deal.
- 1:45:51I mean, you're gonna care about me.
- 1:45:52And you signed it. And then then you screwed
- 1:45:53yourself. 10 minutes. Later.
- 1:45:54Whatever. And you're like, anything
- 1:45:56happening and like, oh, he left. You're like, oh shit, what the
- 1:45:59fuck? Yeah.
- 1:45:59And then and then and they're like, well, you got a contract,
- 1:46:01you can't leave. So it it's crazy, man.
- 1:46:02They're just going to you never want to sell your master for
- 1:46:04sure. Never want to do that.
- 1:46:05And I, and I did not do that with my label advance.
- 1:46:09It's just on based off sales. You know what I mean?
- 1:46:11So they I own my master. I can do what I want with it.
- 1:46:13But that was the deal I took, you know what I mean?
- 1:46:15So here a lot of kids come here from Ohio or some shit and
- 1:46:18they're like, I want to be a star and they'll sign the dotted
- 1:46:20line. You know, Tootsies and all those
- 1:46:22bars on Broadway, They mess with all those players on there and,
- 1:46:25and tootsies got called out. I think I don't care what I talk
- 1:46:28about them. I think it was Tootsies, but I
- 1:46:29could be wrong. Let's just say it's one of the
- 1:46:31bars on on Broadway. They were given their artists,
- 1:46:34their management deals and go, we're going to manage you and
- 1:46:37you can't work with anybody because they thought they were
- 1:46:39creating artists and bands were signing it.
- 1:46:41And then a regular becoming want to sign you go no, you're
- 1:46:43signing Tootsies crazy. Yeah, what would tootsies do
- 1:46:46with? That I don't know if those
- 1:46:47tootsies. Sorry if I was wrong.
- 1:46:48With that particular place. One of their they just thought
- 1:46:51like, hey, we're creating you as an artist.
- 1:46:52Yeah. You belong to us now, Yeah.
- 1:46:54Crazy if they got babe meanwhile they weren't doing anything for
- 1:46:57the. Artist.
- 1:46:58Yeah, yeah, none. But they owned you.
- 1:46:59Yeah. I mean, case, you're looking at
- 1:47:00the music. But you know, man, you can
- 1:47:01always get a lawyer. A contract can always get
- 1:47:03broken. Yeah, I mean, sure, cost you
- 1:47:05money. Yeah, but yeah, cost you money
- 1:47:06and usually exactly. You had a fun thing.
- 1:47:10You've had a lot of fun things, I'm sure in your life, but and I
- 1:47:13love the show Vice Principals. Yeah, I don't wonder what you're
- 1:47:16talking about, dude. That clip went viral.
- 1:47:17I love this statement. I didn't know it was you until
- 1:47:20you had posted something about it recently.
- 1:47:22So the show Vice Principals on HBO with Danny McBride, Walton
- 1:47:26Goggins. How funny.
- 1:47:28Funny clip first. Of all those two together,
- 1:47:30Amazing. Rick Johnson.
- 1:47:32He was, so he. Danny McBride lives in
- 1:47:35Charleston. Does he like that?
- 1:47:36That was all filled in Charleston.
- 1:47:37That's right, because he moved down there to do shoot the
- 1:47:39whole. Because there's a tax credit
- 1:47:41that wasn't Forrest Gump. That's why they filmed it there.
- 1:47:43The tax. Scripts are huge.
- 1:47:44And Dan O'bride has a tequila we're about to put on a show in
- 1:47:47Charleston with it's called Don Gato Tequila.
- 1:47:50It's got like the the what's what's up with Jack Black?
- 1:47:53What's the movie he did where he's like a priest and a Nacho
- 1:47:57Libre? Oh, OK.
- 1:47:58And they're all and they're all fighting with all the mask on
- 1:48:00it. And so that's that's that's the
- 1:48:01Dan O'bride's. But go ahead.
- 1:48:02OK. So yeah.
- 1:48:03Alright, that's awesome. OK, so I didn't know this.
- 1:48:06I know the show. You put a post out.
- 1:48:08I don't know, a month, maybe two months ago maybe.
- 1:48:10Maybe. And you're in the show, you get
- 1:48:13to yell at Walton Goggins. So.
- 1:48:15You know what the scene is so that he's.
- 1:48:17In like a carnival or something. You explained it.
- 1:48:19You're there. So that it's it's a it's a high
- 1:48:21school ICER on he runs track and cross country.
- 1:48:23I used to run there. I think I had my best PR time
- 1:48:26there too, man. It was my my mile was a correct
- 1:48:31if I were wrong, 5 minutes fast right.
- 1:48:33So I was a 440, but I but I was I was 15440 fifty, a world
- 1:48:38record. But no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:48:42Like right. 5 minutes is fast, right?
- 1:48:43Yeah, yes. So then was a fight.
- 1:48:45Was it a 540? No, no, no.
- 1:48:47I did like a 440 mile. He was fast.
- 1:48:50That's Olympic. No, no, no, I I swear to God did
- 1:48:53like a 441 time but it was during cross but was during.
- 1:48:57Hey, there's alcohol involved. He was.
- 1:48:58He was fast, but it was during cross country, so it wasn't my
- 1:49:00mile. It was like they clicked it in
- 1:49:02at that. And I was like, Oh my God.
- 1:49:04You know, they could have been, they could have been wrong.
- 1:49:06I swear to God, Taylor, don't make me feel bad about it.
- 1:49:09He's gonna look at us. It's not Olympic.
- 1:49:10All the guys in South, we're doing like 4 fifties.
- 1:49:13Anyway, whatever, Tyler. We'll move on from it.
- 1:49:15I swear to. Backing them up.
- 1:49:16You know, you know, man, I'm going to, I'm going to look it
- 1:49:18up and find it and then we're going to fight.
- 1:49:20No, Anyway, so I did. I did a really fast mile there
- 1:49:23and I was like, Oh my God, we're back at the track and what the
- 1:49:26scene was is they're fighting over a cooler with acid in it.
- 1:49:30It's a silly show. And they then they they don't
- 1:49:33want to spike the other team that they so they feel bad about
- 1:49:35it, right. So him and Daniel Bryan Wong
- 1:49:36guns are fighting over it. And then it goes on them.
- 1:49:38They go, Oh my God, we got to get out here.
- 1:49:40Absorbs through the skin. And so they're tripping on acid,
- 1:49:42walking out. And so I was an extra.
- 1:49:45My twin brother was the casting director and so he's like, hey
- 1:49:48man, you're about to move to Nashville.
- 1:49:49If you need a gig, come on down. You could be an extra.
- 1:49:52And so my first day on set, they go, hey, you guys are twins.
- 1:49:55We need people the same height for the scene.
- 1:49:57So I got upgraded to an actual actor.
- 1:49:59And so all the extras. Charles is not a big film area.
- 1:50:04So everyone there is like, I'm an extra.
- 1:50:05I might make it. You're not, you're just, you're
- 1:50:08just an extra. And so everyone thought I was an
- 1:50:10actor and I was like, I'm not an actor.
- 1:50:11But everyone assumed it was 'cause I was, I was with Walton
- 1:50:13Goggins. And so the scene was I was just
- 1:50:16walking and go woo with my, with my horns on.
- 1:50:19And so, and he's tripping on ass and as he turns my twin brothers
- 1:50:22in the CGI devil costume where he screams at him.
- 1:50:25So he's in that costume, but they kind of like, you know,
- 1:50:27alter it, post at it. And so that scene took 8 hours
- 1:50:31because just because it just, it just did.
- 1:50:33And so we probably left at like 7:00 AM.
- 1:50:36Him and Daniel Bride were like drinking.
- 1:50:37They were kind of getting pissed off.
- 1:50:38It was just taking forever. And so then you know, it's
- 1:50:41supposed to be miked. And so they go, dude, all of
- 1:50:43them. And they're like you're getting
- 1:50:44$1000 a day. I was like, Oh my God, 'cause I
- 1:50:46had to add a line just going woo, but they forgot to mic me
- 1:50:50and so I went to check out and they go, oh, you get 7-5 bucks.
- 1:50:53I was like, bro, you don't understand.
- 1:50:55I need that money. I'm going to Nashville next
- 1:50:56week. It was crazy, but that was cool.
- 1:50:58No one cared about that show. But then definitely Righteous
- 1:51:01Gemstones and now Watton Goggins being in.
- 1:51:04What's that show he's in now? He was in White Lotus White.
- 1:51:08Lotus says the last one. So that all of a sudden
- 1:51:10everything he did, yeah. And not until that clip.
- 1:51:12Oh, he's so brilliant. I love, I love him.
- 1:51:14And justified you go even back further.
- 1:51:16Yeah, with Timmy. Yeah, yeah, but he's like the
- 1:51:18biggest actor in the world, right?
- 1:51:19Now he's he's just amazing. Just at SNL.
- 1:51:21He's so good. That was cool.
- 1:51:22That was just a random moment. It was really neat.
- 1:51:24That was fun. Then I was just standing for the
- 1:51:25rest of the show. So I, I, I hung around the whole
- 1:51:29time being the stand in the stand is like where they get you
- 1:51:31kind of look like them, I guess. And then you get out of set and
- 1:51:34then because the camera's ready for them.
- 1:51:36And so I got, I got paid quite a bit every day.
- 1:51:38And then so you're eating craft food every day.
- 1:51:40So that was pretty sweet where you're having like literally
- 1:51:43like Creme brulee and like lobster tail and all, and all
- 1:51:46the actions you're having like hot dogs and spaghetti.
- 1:51:48And so then I got fired. And so then I was on set and
- 1:51:52everyone just liked me and my brother and I and all the
- 1:51:54writers like be like you guys coming over here and they took
- 1:51:56a, rented a house. They blacked out all the windows
- 1:51:59because they're getting ready for the lights.
- 1:52:00And so we all like fell asleep because it was just, we were
- 1:52:03there last night till 1:00 AM, we're back at 8.
- 1:52:05And so we all kind of knocked out with the writers.
- 1:52:07They're asleep too. But the head director, who is
- 1:52:10also in Righteous Gemstones, he's a guitar player.
- 1:52:12That's the director. You know what I'm talking about.
- 1:52:13He's got the long hair. Have you seen that show?
- 1:52:15What's? The show Righteous Gemstones.
- 1:52:17Yeah. Oh yeah, I love it.
- 1:52:17So the guy with the long hair, that's like the guitar player?
- 1:52:21So he's the director, he's the director.
- 1:52:22Yeah, so he's the director. So he just pops in the show
- 1:52:24sometimes he he had to go do a movie.
- 1:52:26And so this other director from Italy came in and he I think he
- 1:52:29just made an example of me. I fell asleep.
- 1:52:31He walked in. You're fired, get upset.
- 1:52:33And everyone's really upset. They're like, Oh my God.
- 1:52:35I was like, dude, I'm moving in Asheville.
- 1:52:35I don't give a shit. So.
- 1:52:37But that was a really cool experience.
- 1:52:38My only time with film that was really.
- 1:52:40Fun. It was really cool because I I
- 1:52:41remember that you you run up and you go.
- 1:52:43Woo, that's awesome. It was pretty.
- 1:52:47Fun. Yeah, I was supposed to be a
- 1:52:49high school kid. Yeah.
- 1:52:50Yeah. Oh, it was great.
- 1:52:51It was great. Yeah, it was fun, man.
- 1:52:52That's cool. You saw that.
- 1:52:53I mean, dude, that that clip is like all over the place.
- 1:52:55People use it on TikTok and shit.
- 1:52:56Yeah. So I think you gotta love it.
- 1:52:57Yeah, I didn't. Again, I didn't know it was you
- 1:52:59until you had posted that and I had seen the show.
- 1:53:01I I loved the show. And I was like, Oh, well, I
- 1:53:03mean, we wouldn't know that, you know, But the fact you brought
- 1:53:05it up and I was like, oh. Yeah, it was cool shit.
- 1:53:08Yeah, yeah. I'll post it now then, but I was
- 1:53:10in this. I love the song you do when I
- 1:53:16was young. Oh cool.
- 1:53:18And I'm a dope because I think I text you one point like hey man,
- 1:53:20love the new song. You're like, hey, came out in
- 1:53:222016, but that's what you have that literally.
- 1:53:27Be current. I know, I know.
- 1:53:29However. I love it.
- 1:53:31Too. He loves it now.
- 1:53:33Now he loves it. No, I'm talking about him.
- 1:53:35Yeah, I loved it. Like here I.
- 1:53:36Go 10 years ago 9. Years ago, Yeah, 10 years ago.
- 1:53:39But it was a re release. In my defense, there was a re
- 1:53:42release. 1018. Yeah, OK, so sweet damn it.
- 1:53:48I didn't even save myself. But that that re release that I
- 1:53:52had seen and we just talked about it earlier before we came
- 1:53:54on Mike's was when I was younger.
- 1:53:57That was the one I think I came across.
- 1:54:00Yeah, had a heavier riff. So it's two different, it's the
- 1:54:02same song or two different versions.
- 1:54:04It's just slightly different. And the second or the re release
- 1:54:08charted right or something or shut up.
- 1:54:11Yes, Sir. Yeah, it charted.
- 1:54:12Number one recently. Charted number one on Amazon for
- 1:54:14a day. Yeah, on bestsellers and rock.
- 1:54:16Song that's from 2016. Yeah, so the when I was younger
- 1:54:20was 2018, when I was younger was 2016, but the 2018 version
- 1:54:23charted number one on Amazon. OK, but because the show, it's
- 1:54:25all about the song. The song could be, well, I think
- 1:54:27Blues rock. You can be an old dude.
- 1:54:30Well, there's a great band here. Check him out Piper and the Hard
- 1:54:32Times, older dudes, new band and they are fucking.
- 1:54:36They just won best Blues band international Blues thing in
- 1:54:39Memphis. It's just if the muse is good,
- 1:54:41the muse is good. If Blues is cool, it's it's Bill
- 1:54:44Burr has a good quote saying if you want bubble gum results to
- 1:54:49your pop star, if you be like a rock artist, like that's like a
- 1:54:52long tread with loyal fans, you know, I mean, so I think I think
- 1:54:55you can you can do anything that's cool if it's rock, but it
- 1:54:58might take a long time for to catch on.
- 1:55:00The vibe of that song is really cool.
- 1:55:01There's a cadence to it, which I think is why I fell in love with
- 1:55:04it. Just like and I was young.
- 1:55:06It only took a nine years to catch up.
- 1:55:08I never knew. But that's just rock music,
- 1:55:12yeah. But once I heard it, I was like,
- 1:55:14I'm on board, he's on. Board Well Creed, they had a
- 1:55:17resurgence. The guy was live in a hotel and
- 1:55:19then I think when people use his music and TikTok during COVID,
- 1:55:21yeah. Now Creed is the biggest band in
- 1:55:23the. World right now they are they're
- 1:55:24back touring it and look, Alter Bridge is my favorite brand.
- 1:55:27I love Alter Bridge. Yeah, and they're still, they're
- 1:55:28still, they're still going to be there.
- 1:55:30They're doing this other thing now.
- 1:55:31But the fact that Creed is back too is just even.
- 1:55:33Better because Mark Tremonti, the guitar player, just.
- 1:55:37Oh dude. That's marked for my.
- 1:55:40Oh my God dude, so we're speaking your language?
- 1:55:43Here is the camera big enough? Yeah, Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:55:46yeah, yeah. I left it today.
- 1:55:49What's that one where? I saw you doing pushups outside
- 1:55:51before. We started.
- 1:55:53Just before we started. So yeah, I love that band.
- 1:55:57I know the first the. First album was so good, so
- 1:56:01good. I used to have that in my my
- 1:56:02little Chevy S10 with the 10 discs CD chain.
- 1:56:05Yeah, remember that? Oh yeah, 10 discs.
- 1:56:07Oh yeah. We my parents got a Jeep
- 1:56:09Wrangler or no a Jeep Grand Cherokee and we thought we were
- 1:56:12the richest people in. Trouble.
- 1:56:14We grew up in town called Goose Creek, but it's outside of
- 1:56:16Charleston. When you get a button and just
- 1:56:18play any song you want or just skip to ACD.
- 1:56:21Like, wow, we're pretty. Big time right here, yeah.
- 1:56:26I had a 77 Camaro and I had one mounted in the trunk.
- 1:56:29Yes, we had had the cable. All the way into the front.
- 1:56:31I had a little display on there but right.
- 1:56:33We thought we were the. Trying to be innovative back
- 1:56:36then, yeah. When you go live, when you do a
- 1:56:39live show, do you have any pre show rituals that you like to do
- 1:56:44so you go out there on stage? 100% take a shot of whiskey.
- 1:56:46Yeah, all the time. Just one.
- 1:56:49Does it matter what the whiskey is?
- 1:56:50No. No, no, just whatever is I
- 1:56:51usually bring this with me. But yeah, I think it comes a
- 1:56:53nerves down, OK, you know, But I have gone and stays a little
- 1:56:56tipsy before, I'll put it that way.
- 1:56:58And it's really stupid to do. Yeah.
- 1:57:00'Cause you're like, you're like having fun backstage and you're
- 1:57:02like, oh shit. You know what I mean?
- 1:57:05I still have a job to do still. Yeah, totally.
- 1:57:07Yeah. But always a shot of whiskey.
- 1:57:08OK, you go to the bathroom like 3 times because you don't want
- 1:57:13to have to go pee on stage. You want to time that just
- 1:57:15right, right? You don't have to go while
- 1:57:17you're. Out there.
- 1:57:17But I think I was always funny kind of.
- 1:57:18And you get everybody else because like I've seen some
- 1:57:20bands where the lead guys like really like, you know, be ready
- 1:57:23and the band's like, OK, I'm getting paid.
- 1:57:25But like for us, it's like a it's a party, you know what I
- 1:57:27mean? So always like a shot.
- 1:57:29Any idea at this point since you started touring how many tours
- 1:57:34you've done? Tour tours, not a ton where it's
- 1:57:38like a tour tour, but you can call me like a weekend warrior
- 1:57:42and I'm like, hey, we're going to do this run.
- 1:57:44I mean, but shows, man, I don't know when I was doing, when I
- 1:57:46was doing full time music, I was doing like 3-4 nights a week.
- 1:57:50And so BMI live is a thing where you get paid now when you play
- 1:57:56shows. Man, I thought I was the richest
- 1:57:58guy in the world. I was getting like couple grand
- 1:57:59every BMI check and living in Charleston, my rent was $400.
- 1:58:04And so I was like, oh, this is it.
- 1:58:06But then I saw guys that were older that were in Charleston,
- 1:58:09like trying to make it and like, they don't look too healthy
- 1:58:12because they're drinking all the time.
- 1:58:13And I was like, man, I can't, I need to do something else to
- 1:58:16like where I don't have to always be playing because
- 1:58:19there's always a bar tab or something.
- 1:58:20You're like, oh, fuck it. I have a drink.
- 1:58:21And then like, it's a, it's a cycle and you're not, you're not
- 1:58:24eating really good food. You're eating like chicken
- 1:58:26tenders. And so eventually I was like,
- 1:58:28OK, I can't do this all the time, but I definitely played a
- 1:58:31lot of shows. But it got my got my playing up
- 1:58:33for sure where I can like I can play for hours.
- 1:58:35And there's only so many artists out there that have, you know,
- 1:58:37like the big time tour buses. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:58:40The good food. Yeah, the good food.
- 1:58:43Yeah. It's it's tough.
- 1:58:45We tour, you always try to find good food.
- 1:58:47If I see a Panera Bread, I'm like, guys, we got to stop.
- 1:58:49And yeah, it's slightly better actually.
- 1:58:51I love Panera Bread. I do.
- 1:58:53Like Panera, they have good choices in there.
- 1:58:55You can make good choice. When I'm doing when I do tours
- 1:58:57with this tours where I'm like driving all week, meeting other
- 1:59:00accounts, Panera Bread all day and then I'll keep the cup in
- 1:59:02the car so I don't pay for another soda, you know what I
- 1:59:04mean? So.
- 1:59:05Scott Scott Actually, Scott and I were on baseball.
- 1:59:08I. Do this shit all the time.
- 1:59:09Scott and I were on our baseball brewery tour recently and we
- 1:59:12were, I think we were leaving like Cleveland or something.
- 1:59:15And we're trying to figure out like where we go for breakfast
- 1:59:17and, and we were laughing. I'm like, there's a, there's
- 1:59:20like a Perkins or an IHOP, but wait, there's Panera.
- 1:59:24Panera. So yeah, we we Panera.
- 1:59:26There were three or four things and we were like Panera.
- 1:59:29Panera always together. I think you're a psycho if you
- 1:59:32if you eat Taco Bell during the day.
- 1:59:36It's a late. Night.
- 1:59:37It's a late night thing. Ask him what I think of Taco
- 1:59:40Bell. But you know what?
- 1:59:40Do you think of Taco Bell? But he he doesn't.
- 1:59:42He's not a big fan of the Taco Bell.
- 1:59:44I love Taco Bell at night. At night, at night, maybe at
- 1:59:47night. No I think it's the shit dude.
- 1:59:49Like you get a whole bunch of random different things for like
- 1:59:5110 bucks. Well, now.
- 1:59:52And they drink some whiskey and have some Taco Bell.
- 1:59:54Yeah, My, my, my girlfriend, my girlfriend's Latina.
- 1:59:57She's Mexican, all right. She hates Taco Bell.
- 1:59:59She's like, this is not. I'm like, no, this is good shit.
- 2:00:03You're back and get it at 1:00 AM if I.
- 2:00:04Want Yeah I'm like come on man, it's good shit but living in LA
- 2:00:07oh man, the Mexican food there was so.
- 2:00:09Good, there's no Waffle House on the road.
- 2:00:11Well, in the Southeast, hell yeah.
- 2:00:13Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:00:14But out there, it was Denny's. We we actually were talking
- 2:00:18about that when we were we were traveling through Ohio.
- 2:00:20Or or IHOP. Somehow, yeah, IHOP and Denny's
- 2:00:23came up and we both got them. Like I think the last time I
- 2:00:26went to a Denny's, it was many, many years ago and I was with a
- 2:00:29buddy of mine and like the waitress sneezed on our food and
- 2:00:32I never went back, I said. I don't want mayonnaise.
- 2:00:34Takes your sandwiches, whips off.
- 2:00:36There you go. Fuck, you know what I mean?
- 2:00:38Yeah, Denny's is gross. IHOP would be tolerable.
- 2:00:40IHOP is cool. I live in front of IHOP in LA on
- 2:00:43Wilshire was like the longest road goes from Santa Monica
- 2:00:45downtown. Yeah, and there's IHOP in front
- 2:00:47of us and it was like it was decent.
- 2:00:48You know what? I.
- 2:00:49Mean, you know. What I mean?
- 2:00:50But but I love Taco Bell. I love Taco Bell all.
- 2:00:53Right. Completely unrelated, but
- 2:00:55In-n-out Burger is coming here. How do you feel about that being
- 2:00:58Yeah and then being have living in?
- 2:01:00N Out Burger. Oh my God, I can't wait.
- 2:01:01Headquarters are moving here. Really.
- 2:01:03Yes, since. They're all leaving California
- 2:01:06dude. RDC.
- 2:01:06Like I mentioned earlier, major corporations live in California.
- 2:01:10They're all even. I love California though.
- 2:01:11I want to move back one day so but In-n-out can't wait.
- 2:01:15Man is it will live up to the hype because I've never had an N
- 2:01:17Out burger and they will be here.
- 2:01:19You ever had? Never had either.
- 2:01:20You've had Jack Brown's. Oh yeah, yeah.
- 2:01:23Yeah, it's very simple where it's a guy like fantastic that
- 2:01:26like kind of like 1000 Island sauce on it.
- 2:01:28Yeah, it's like that, but in and out.
- 2:01:29Dude is so good. You know how much a manager
- 2:01:31makes in California, like 120 grand a year?
- 2:01:33What? Yeah, because they're just print
- 2:01:34money. It's like Chick-fil-A.
- 2:01:35It's like. I I realize I'm going to get
- 2:01:37laughed at here and the only reason I know this is because
- 2:01:40I've been told this by other people since Bucky's is such a
- 2:01:44big phenomenon on buggies is cool and you can go to Bucky's
- 2:01:47and apparently be like a big general manager of a Bucky's and
- 2:01:50make like 130. Grand dude, something is up to
- 2:01:53quarter million the. Quarter million I was.
- 2:01:55One the middle of nowhere car wash and I had out there and
- 2:01:57said, here's the here's the the salary for all the positions and
- 2:02:00the GM was like, but I'm sure you had I'm sure you live there.
- 2:02:03No, that's the thing, yeah. So if you're like, dude, I'm in
- 2:02:06some gambling debt I gotta I gotta stop at.
- 2:02:08Bucky's Oh, you know. You, I have an ex-wife.
- 2:02:10I'll just live with the Bucky's now.
- 2:02:11I went, I went to Bucky's for the.
- 2:02:14I had. I went, I had Bucky's for the
- 2:02:16first time in the past year. Yeah.
- 2:02:18First time ever in the. Past I'm ever here on this.
- 2:02:20You went in there? Yeah, yeah.
- 2:02:21It's wild. You walk in there, it's a lot of
- 2:02:24mouth breathers. They're all just kind of like,
- 2:02:27like, dude, get the fuck out of way.
- 2:02:28I'm trying, I'm trying to get a Gatorade, you know, I mean, but
- 2:02:30it's just like it is every time I go there, I'm like, dude,
- 2:02:35geez, it's it's so wild. But Bucky's?
- 2:02:37Bet a total 20 minutes and Bucky's and you know what?
- 2:02:41You know what, I purchased there only for myself.
- 2:02:44So I I had some family that love Bucky's and I got them a gift
- 2:02:47card or whatever. Beaver Nuggets.
- 2:02:48Yeah, I bought, bought my girlfriend a little like the
- 2:02:50little squirrel or whatever it is.
- 2:02:52Yeah, yeah. But you know, you know what I
- 2:02:53got? I collect shot glasses.
- 2:02:55Oh, cool. And I went in there and I'm
- 2:02:56like, maybe Bucky's has shot glasses.
- 2:02:58They totally do. I have a Bucky shot glass.
- 2:03:01Nice cool they got like the the pulled pork and the the print.
- 2:03:05That I had to. I had the pulled pork sandwich.
- 2:03:07They got one up north of Bowling Green, KY.
- 2:03:09Yeah, they do have to stop in there.
- 2:03:11It's just funny though, but you go in there, the the gas is
- 2:03:13cheap. Every time I see a bucket, they
- 2:03:14just just go in. Yeah, it's kind of fun.
- 2:03:16Yeah, you know, but yeah, but the general manager makes a like
- 2:03:19a quarter million bucks. That probably is the highest
- 2:03:21they make, but. Isn't that wild?
- 2:03:23It is wild. It is wild.
- 2:03:24I think the car wash manager makes that shit ton too.
- 2:03:26Yeah. You know, but would you want to
- 2:03:28work there? No.
- 2:03:29I don't know. Of the brisket sandwiches free.
- 2:03:34Yeah, it's crazy. They got great bathrooms.
- 2:03:36I think the one cool thing to make, I mean, like Taylor's
- 2:03:38doing it like with content, Content's cool if you can keep
- 2:03:40doing it. I mean maybe hopefully one day
- 2:03:42you guys start making some. Cash, yeah, hopefully.
- 2:03:43You know what I mean? It's just, but it's all about
- 2:03:45video. You gotta get the clips.
- 2:03:47Yep. It's like you see comedians like
- 2:03:49no one watches the full set. You just they just watch the
- 2:03:51clips. People talk about how they
- 2:03:53selling out arenas. It's not from the clips, it's
- 2:03:55the. Clips yeah, Jeff Dye love that
- 2:03:57guy. He just said zanies recently and
- 2:03:58I was like, Oh my God, it's him. But I see him all the time on
- 2:04:00Instagram Zanies and saw that, yeah, Tyler Fisher.
- 2:04:03He was another guy that blew up through like TikTok just doing
- 2:04:07stupid shit. And then now the guy's like he
- 2:04:09has, I've seen his stuff on Instagram.
- 2:04:10He's like he lives like in $1,000,000 house in Austin, you
- 2:04:12know what I mean? So it's kind of Wildman.
- 2:04:14It's we live in a crazy world coming up.
- 2:04:16I was like, dude, like, you know, Internet, whatever.
- 2:04:19And now it's like everyone's gunning for it.
- 2:04:20Yeah, even our dumb shit that we do is like, I'm not doing social
- 2:04:24media. What do we do?
- 2:04:25We're not doing. Social media.
- 2:04:26And then and. Then fuck, you have to.
- 2:04:27Then you do it. You have to.
- 2:04:29You know, I was never a TikTok guy really.
- 2:04:30I just started, I started really getting TikTok about two months
- 2:04:33ago and now it's starting to pop off.
- 2:04:35I'm like fuck I. Guess man, yeah.
- 2:04:36And I gotta keep this thing up. Yeah, but you know what, man, it
- 2:04:39does turn into things. I mean, I mean, we met, you know
- 2:04:41what I mean? Yes, absolutely.
- 2:04:42You start. OK, let's give a shout out to
- 2:04:43everybody. Armando, right.
- 2:04:45Our our boy Mondo and I was gonna bring up, yes, Armando
- 2:04:47takes fantastic pictures, by the way.
- 2:04:49We both know him that. Cheers to Armando.
- 2:04:53Cheers to you guys. He's a big cheers to you.
- 2:04:55Cheers, Sir. Tyler Taylor back there.
- 2:04:58Thank you so much. He's in overtime.
- 2:05:01I think, I think, I think, I think every time I come here.
- 2:05:05The only reason you drink while I'm.
- 2:05:08Doing. This.
- 2:05:11Can I also say usually I'm the one that's kind of like
- 2:05:14engineering our podcast. So this has been the first
- 2:05:17podcast we've ever done where I'm not stressing anything.
- 2:05:19Sure. I'm not just sitting around
- 2:05:20going, huh? I hope the audio's OK.
- 2:05:23You guys should come back and you should just like once a
- 2:05:25month. Or so we will.
- 2:05:26We will because it's been a great we're at Garden Groove yes
- 2:05:29Studios right in East Nashville, TN on him out knock on the front
- 2:05:34door. Taylor will answer If you just
- 2:05:37need just need like an impromptu.
- 2:05:38I love it man. I try to come here.
- 2:05:39This is this is awesome. It's nice and and and quaint and
- 2:05:44and just awesome and and we just it's I don't know, it's really
- 2:05:48cool. It's great.
- 2:05:48A little spot right here I. I can't wait man.
- 2:05:50I I've been looking forward to this one too because you know,
- 2:05:53I'm not the one interviewing so it's fun.
- 2:05:54So appreciate it. One last thing and get back to
- 2:05:58your serious mode real quick. You're serious, you are
- 2:06:02creative, you're driven, you're independent.
- 2:06:04What is that common thread that ties all your things together?
- 2:06:09I think it's easy just being consistent.
- 2:06:11Yeah, yeah. You're just always doing it.
- 2:06:14You got to take it as a job because sometimes you can go
- 2:06:16like, well, I made a lot of money today and like, I guess I
- 2:06:18can take a week off. No, you never should.
- 2:06:20You know, just got to just keep doing stuff because social media
- 2:06:24people don't think boons, both boons aren't doing shit unless
- 2:06:28I'm posting. It's so stupid.
- 2:06:30We can be killing it. But if I post awesome dude, you
- 2:06:33know, so just being consistent and social media is a huge part
- 2:06:35of it. I try to a buddy Lewis rebel
- 2:06:37Tucker, I mentioned earlier, we talked about once.
- 2:06:40It's like I literally roll over in bed and get my phone and I
- 2:06:42start posting immediately and then I get it done with.
- 2:06:44I try to in the morning, you know what I mean?
- 2:06:46And then and then all of a sudden you start seeing results
- 2:06:48from it like some other bar picked up Boone's everyday
- 2:06:52because I followed them and I posted some of those.
- 2:06:54Hey, we just picked it up, you know, so just being consistent.
- 2:06:56Well, let it be known that Tyler Boone is actually doing his own
- 2:06:59social media. Yeah, Yeah.
- 2:07:00And I know this because the reason I met you is I was, I
- 2:07:03think I had read a text DM the Instagram account originally.
- 2:07:08And it was you that responded. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:07:10And here we are today. I had a guy on LinkedIn
- 2:07:11yesterday hit me up, we connected and he goes, this is
- 2:07:14the actual Tyler. Yeah, Yeah, dude, like what?
- 2:07:18He was all coolest talk. You know, I think people think
- 2:07:20there's like bots responding and yeah, you know what I mean?
- 2:07:22So especially we're a bigger artist.
- 2:07:24I'm not a big artist. So yeah, you have to do it all,
- 2:07:26man, you know what I mean? What the other guy has to do in
- 2:07:28Weldon, there's like a million followers all across platforms
- 2:07:31because I do it all by myself, you know what I mean?
- 2:07:33Also too you don't want to be given you don't want to hire
- 2:07:35someone 1000 bucks a month to do it for.
- 2:07:37You. You don't.
- 2:07:38It's. A waste of money.
- 2:07:39But we're not. We're nowhere near, but we got
- 2:07:41to herm a little thing. But we do every single thing
- 2:07:44ourselves. Anything you see, good or bad,
- 2:07:45is US. Yeah, yeah.
- 2:07:46There's nobody else involved. Well, I just say if you'd be
- 2:07:49consistent in a year from you guys will you know, you know
- 2:07:51what I mean. I'll give message for you
- 2:07:53bouncing. What's your goal with your pod,
- 2:07:54you know? We would honestly, it would like
- 2:07:56you said, we would like to have some revenue.
- 2:07:58Yeah, sure. Some, some, it doesn't have to
- 2:08:00be big, just some form of stream of revenue, whether it be a
- 2:08:03sponsorship. We've done a few things where
- 2:08:05we've asked some people we got to build on that.
- 2:08:07But some, some sponsorship maybe, maybe sponsor a trip like
- 2:08:12a Cincinnati trip, Maybe sponsor that trip.
- 2:08:15And I think the thing that you something like that and not to
- 2:08:17interrupt, I think the thing that you had also said was
- 2:08:20consistency. I mean, we put out, you know,
- 2:08:23usually a podcast a week. We try to be consistent.
- 2:08:25We try to have good content. And I think the thing that we've
- 2:08:28tried to be consistent about is we try to be a champion for what
- 2:08:33we do, representing the craft beer community.
- 2:08:36Sure, you know, and we don't, we don't crap on breweries.
- 2:08:41We don't crap on beer. I mean, we might say, you know,
- 2:08:44we drank that beer, not our thing.
- 2:08:45But, you know, it's subjective, right?
- 2:08:47And so we just try to be out there championing everybody.
- 2:08:51I think maybe what you could maybe do is like what you guys
- 2:08:54get your platform bigger and get some more subscribers.
- 2:08:56You can leverage it and go, hey, you got this big thing on
- 2:08:59Saturday, like a, you know, have that shit on Saturday, like live
- 2:09:01music and all this fun stuff. Go, we'll come out and do it
- 2:09:04live. Pay US150.
- 2:09:05You know, I mean, just something simple.
- 2:09:07Just screw it. We got a podcast out there and
- 2:09:10that's one of my buddy Box, who was a DJ guy back in the day.
- 2:09:13That's what he did. He used to call it boxing
- 2:09:16something, I can't remember the name of it, but he would go with
- 2:09:18his podcast live, like a radio thing.
- 2:09:20We have like a table and the tent.
- 2:09:22Yeah. And he would go live and he
- 2:09:23would get paid like 200 bucks just be at a brewery.
- 2:09:25That's cool. Yeah, that's cool.
- 2:09:26Yeah. We haven't got paid for it, but
- 2:09:28we've gotten we've gotten invitations and we got more
- 2:09:30coming to come out and do it and we'll give you tickets for the
- 2:09:33thing for free, sure. And come out.
- 2:09:34So that's kind of a step in that directions.
- 2:09:36Well, let's keep collabing, man. If you.
- 2:09:38If you. We all, yeah, I mean, we're fans
- 2:09:40of yours, obviously. And thanks for thanks for doing
- 2:09:43this in our stupid little podcast that you have.
- 2:09:46But no, this was great. Thanks for this for, you know,
- 2:09:50introducing us to Taylor Taylor having us here.
- 2:09:53Taylor, thanks for having us and staying late and.
- 2:09:57I got the second hour, you got the.
- 2:09:59Second, cheers anyway. Cheers.
- 2:10:01Guys, thank you. Tyler Boone.
- 2:10:03Yep, Taylor over here. Say your podcast name over the
- 2:10:06time. Brewery Underground podcast.
- 2:10:07Brewery Underground podcast Thank you at the Garden Groove

- 2:10:13singer-songwriter. Taliboon.

- 2:10:19of it. Taliban.

- 2:10:22whiskey. You're cool.
- 2:10:23Boom, all right.
