Latest / Everyday Ancestral with James Barry / Traditional Healing Meets Modern Mastery: Dr. Adam Gavine’s 2-Day Fix for Chronic Pain Pt. 2
Transcript
- 0:00Last time, Dr. Gavine explained the origin of his healing philosophy and the power of
- 0:05individualized care.
- 0:06In part two, we uncover how his wasabi method and shockwave therapy work.
- 0:11Plus, we hear about remarkable patient recoveries, just like my wife, Margaret,
- 0:15who regained her ability to walk extremely quickly.
- 0:19Dr. Gavine also shares how understanding
- 0:21physiology leads to real long-term healing.
- 0:25Don't forget to listen to part one.
- 0:26I'm your host,
- 0:27James Berry, and you're listening to Everyday Ancestral, where tradition meets innovation for
- 0:32whole body wellness.
- 0:34I want to go back though to some of your other therapies.
- 0:38One of the ones
- 0:39that you used with Margaret and that I think is the core of the wasabi method is shockwave therapy.
- 0:47So can you talk about that?
- 0:49Yeah.
- 0:50So that's a company I started with Dave Asprey last year.
- 0:55and um the wasabi method yeah wasabi method as you can see here um so we use acoustic sound waves
- 1:05that we put into the tissues of the body to stimulate healing and repair of those tissues
- 1:11so it has it has actually nine about 19 physiological effects that it has on the body
- 1:18So some of them are, it increases what's called angiogenesis.
- 1:22So angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels.
- 1:27So I can go on like your arm.
- 1:29And a lot of people, the problem is why they get like trigger points or pain or soreness.
- 1:36Think of muscles almost like plants.
- 1:39if they don't get enough blood, or in my analogy, water, they start to wither and not work as well.
- 1:48So when I can go on a tissue and stimulate the body to say, hey, lay down some more capillaries
- 1:56in this area to help supply that muscle with adequate blood flow so it can function better.
- 2:05So think of it like laying down some irrigation to a plant to give it more water.
- 2:12That plant starts to thrive instead of just survive.
- 2:18It almost sounds like you're supporting resilience, really.
- 2:23Well, essentially we are because, again, it comes down to just physiology.
- 2:29If you understand physiology, you can almost fix anything.
- 2:33so you just you just identify what's happening in the body and go okay this is like this muscle's
- 2:39lacking blood flow so if i increase the blood flow to that muscle guess what happens it becomes
- 2:44stronger it becomes more resilient it becomes more functional it becomes like just a better
- 2:50functioning muscle so walk me through when you were applying that shockwave therapy
- 2:59through the wasabi method on Margaret with her knee.
- 3:03Can you walk me through what you actually did?
- 3:05Because it was more than just that.
- 3:07I know you were also using your experience.
- 3:10Yeah.
- 3:11But maybe just share with us that process
- 3:14of how you would work with someone with that ailment.
- 3:17Yeah, so again, the wasabi method,
- 3:24it's not just the device.
- 3:26So a lot of people are always like,
- 3:27you know, why is your device better?
- 3:31And I tell people, honestly, like my device isn't necessarily
- 3:36better than other devices, right?
- 3:40Think of it like a car.
- 3:44You don't need a Ferrari to drive
- 3:46four miles to work on a 30 mile an hour road, right?
- 3:53Like it's kind of superfluous.
- 3:56So a lot of these other companies, they'll sell you these whiz bang devices that cost, you know, $50,000 to $100,000.
- 4:06And I'm like, my device is $15,000.
- 4:10It's like me selling you a Ford Focus.
- 4:12Like, it'll still get you to work.
- 4:14It gets the job done.
- 4:15You don't need the Ferrari to get you to work every day.
- 4:19And so a lot of these other devices, they make you think you need the Ferrari.
- 4:23It's like you have to have the Ferrari.
- 4:25You're stupid if you don't have the Ferrari.
- 4:27And it's like, well, I don't really need the Ferrari.
- 4:29It costs a lot.
- 4:30The upkeep's a lot.
- 4:31And it doesn't really give me any extra benefits.
- 4:37So with our device, if I sell you the Ford Focus, now imagine if I had Lewis Hamilton teach you how to drive that Ford Focus.
- 4:49So that's what we're doing.
- 4:50I'm going to teach you how to use our device to get the maximum benefit out of it.
- 4:56And that's why we call it a method because it's not just the device.
- 5:01It's how you use it.
- 5:03So I teach you with, I have five modules.
- 5:07So we have the upper body, we have the lower body, we have men's sexual health, we have women's sexual health, and then we have advanced techniques.
- 5:18so with the with the upper and lower body it's basically i go through every muscle
- 5:23and i show you exactly how i would treat it so you've get you get like 20 years of experience
- 5:29so you don't have to spend 20 years learning how to do this i teach you the secret sauce i go this
- 5:35is how i do it so you can you can follow what i do or you can adapt it a little bit to to be your
- 5:41own i'm i'm cool with either but i'm going to show you what i do and what works best for me
- 5:47and and that's really the secret is is is learning how to use it because then you'll get much better
- 5:53results and pretty much we're the one of the only companies in the world that sell these devices
- 5:59that have comprehensive education that comes along with it and we the other thing we do is we'll sell
- 6:07to non-medical people so i could sell you a device the caveat there is you can only use it on yourself
- 6:14You can't, you know, you can't open up and just be like, I'm going to treat everyone down my street and charge them, you know, a hundred bucks each because you have to have, there's two things you have to have insurance and you have to have a license to touch people.
- 6:26So as long as you have that, if you're say like a qualified massage therapist, you can actually charge and use this in your clinic.
- 6:34but we also sell it to like the company i used to work for that i did i was one of their lead
- 6:40instructors they will not sell their device to non-medical people even though the fda deems it
- 6:48okay to do they just go we don't sell the peasant and i'm like okay i'm i'm happy but we have we
- 6:55have certain caveats one is when you buy our device you have to purchase the education so the
- 7:02education again it tells you all the contraindications it tells you all the safety
- 7:08things you actually have to pass our safety test before i will even send you the device
- 7:14so that way i ensure that you have done the the safety module and that you're not going to hurt
- 7:21yourself or others what is it that people have to be aware of because because maybe you can
- 7:27explain or describe the device because most people will be listening to this right so
- 7:34it's a handheld device if i remember correctly it's like a gun so basically um inside inside
- 7:40the gun at the tip it has imagine it's um like a gong at the end here so imagine if you stood in
- 7:47front of a big gong and i hit it really hard you would feel those sound waves from the gong kind of
- 7:54hit your body.
- 7:55Yeah.
- 7:56Those are, those are shock waves.
- 7:58Okay.
- 7:59So basically on our device, we put
- 8:02a little gong on the, on the end of the gun.
- 8:05We have a bullet inside a chamber that gets pushed
- 8:09by controlled bursts of air.
- 8:11And then the bullet hits the gong that creates this sound wave that
- 8:15goes into tissues.
- 8:17Now, the caveat there is you have to have ultrasound gel because the sound
- 8:24waves don't travel well through air.
- 8:26You lose like 99% of the energy, but they travel really well
- 8:31through a medium like water or like a gel.
- 8:37So it's similar to like ultrasound.
- 8:40So you put some gel on,
- 8:42it goes into the tissues.
- 8:44What it does to the tissues is it stimulates signals.
- 8:48So basically
- 8:49you're putting a signal into the body and then the body's responding.
- 8:53So it's like, again,
- 8:54I'm telling your body, clean up on aisle five.
- 8:57So your body, your brain picks up on that signal
- 9:01and then releases all these chemicals.
- 9:05Some of them are like, one's called VEGF.
- 9:08So that stands
- 9:10or vascular endothelial growth factor.
- 9:13So that hormone will help your body grow these new blood vessels.
- 9:20So that's why we use it for helping with erectile dysfunction.
- 9:26Because if you're not getting enough blood flow down there,
- 9:32you can't achieve a proper erection.
- 9:36We can stimulate the body to lay down new blood vessels
- 9:40so that you can achieve a proper erection.
- 9:43And it gives you a permanent solution to that problem
- 9:46if that's the specific issue that you had,
- 9:49if it was due to blood flow,
- 9:51instead of having to pop by or whatever all the time.
- 9:55And what is it?
- 9:56So what does it actually feel like?
- 9:57Does it feel like someone's tapping on you
- 9:59the way you just showed us?
- 10:01Or is it electrical?
- 10:03So the applicator, the tip,
- 10:07kind of moves in and out like that, kind of like a jackhammer.
- 10:11And a lot of people think it's
- 10:14electrical because it feels like it's kind of zapping you, but it's all mechanical.
- 10:18It's all
- 10:18pneumatic.
- 10:19So it's compressed air that pushes the bullet and then the bullet hits the gong.
- 10:24The gong creates these sound waves.
- 10:25The sound waves go into the tissues and you feel those
- 10:28sound waves going into you.
- 10:31And we can control the pressure.
- 10:32So it doesn't have to be excruciating.
- 10:35You can set it to a level that that's tolerable.
- 10:37And I always work within people's tolerance.
- 10:40What kind of outcomes are you seeing in people that use the wasabi method and then how fast are you seeing them?
- 10:47That's a good question.
- 10:49We we get we get really amazing effects almost instantaneously.
- 10:55So if you go watch us on Instagram, I post a lot of our videos of us working at conferences and just the outcomes that these people get within, you know, five minutes for some of them.
- 11:11They're just like, wow, that's amazing.
- 11:13It's unbelievable.
- 11:15One of the other physiological effects that you have from the treatment is it causes angiogenesis or sorry, it causes a local analgesic effect.
- 11:28so if you have pain say in your elbow i can decrease your level of pain within five minutes
- 11:34by using the device because it stimulates the nerves in the area and they release the a chemical
- 11:41called substance p and you probably know this being a chef if you put like if you eat something
- 11:48really spicy you know how it like burns and it hurts a little bit in your mouth at first
- 11:53but then your mouth kind of goes numb and tingly a little bit.
- 11:56So that's the exact same physiological
- 11:58effect that we get when we work on these tissues.
- 12:02So we stimulate these nerve endings to release
- 12:05substance P. Once the nerve has no longer any ability to release substance P, it gives you a
- 12:13little analgesic effect.
- 12:15So your pain instantly goes down.
- 12:18And pain is a strong modulator of
- 12:22movement.
- 12:23So when you have pain, you move differently.
- 12:29And it's very unpredictable.
- 12:31So when I train people, if they have pain, it's really difficult to train them because
- 12:38every time they move, they move differently.
- 12:40But if I can bring down the pain,
- 12:44Now the brain's not trying to protect that joint as much because it goes, oh, the pain's gone.
- 12:49So it can restore normal movement.
- 12:53And then I can get people to do these normal movements and get stronger, more resilient and more functional to help them get back to where they're supposed to be.
- 13:02Hey, YouTube fam, 80% of you watching aren't subscribed.
- 13:07If you're digging these episodes
- 13:09and haven't hit that button yet, now's the time.
- 13:11Every sub helps us grow, land bigger guests,
- 13:15and keep the good stuff coming.
- 13:16So hit subscribe and stay curious.
- 13:19Is there any part of the body you can't put it on?
- 13:21I mean, if you're able to,
- 13:23like when, even with erectile dysfunction, are you literally putting it on the penis?
- 13:29in what the person has to put their hand on the other end?
- 13:32Because don't you need a resistance?
- 13:35No.
- 13:36You don't?
- 13:36No, you just put it on.
- 13:37Like I can put it on your finger, and it'll just go into your finger
- 13:41and stimulate the cells and the tissues at that level.
- 13:45So if you say you sprained your finger joint, I can treat that joint.
- 13:51It will bring down inflammation.
- 13:53It will increase blood flow to the area.
- 13:56It'll bring down your pain level and it will stimulate a bunch of other things like collagen.
- 14:07It actually stimulates stem cells.
- 14:09You get a release of stem cells.
- 14:11You actually even get a release of BDNF, which is a hormone that helps your brain work.
- 14:17So there's, like I said, there's about 19 physiological changes that occur that we stimulate in the body when we use this device.
- 14:26have you guys ever tried it on the inner ear i mean i can't remember how fine the tip is
- 14:32but have you ever been able to help people with hearing issues uh i i haven't tried that but um
- 14:41it's the the device is a little loud so i i would be i would be a little worried working on on the
- 14:47ear but um that might be the only area you wouldn't use it on sounds like yeah you can't
- 14:54use it over the lungs because the shock waves can actually cause air to expand.
- 15:01So there is a small
- 15:04risk that you could damage the alveoli in the lung.
- 15:08So we avoid going directly over the lung.
- 15:12Like if I'm working on someone's upper trap, I'll just kind of direct it away from the lung so that
- 15:18it goes more anterior rather than inferior into the lung.
- 15:22There's the other contraindications
- 15:25are, um, you can't use it on kids.
- 15:27So anyone that are under 18, because it causes growth and
- 15:32proliferation.
- 15:33And with kids, they have what are called growth plates on their, on their bones.
- 15:37So we don't want to, we don't want to stimulate abnormal growth and, and areas.
- 15:44Um,
- 15:45And don't those, those plates usually fuse at what is it?
- 15:4824 or what, what age is that?
- 15:50Well, we, we say, we say 18 because for most, most people, the, the main ones are, are, um, fully formed about 18.
- 15:59There are a few that, yeah, they go up until about 21.
- 16:03Um, it's like, uh, I think it's collarbone is, is one of them.
- 16:09But, um, you, you can usually, you can usually tell if you get, if you get like an x-ray, it's an easy way to, to tell which, which growth plates are, are still there.
- 16:20still there.
- 16:22But yeah, for most people, it's totally safe for a fully grown adult.
- 16:28So pregnancy, it's not that it's harmful.
- 16:32We just don't have a ton of pregnant women signing up to
- 16:36do clinical trials on this.
- 16:41If you're on blood thinners, so like warfarin, stuff like that,
- 16:44because it can cause some bruising and stuff like that.
- 16:49If you have like hemophilia or any blood clotting disorders.
- 16:55Other things are if you've had a cortisone injection,
- 16:59but the caveat there is after six weeks, you can have it done.
- 17:05Pre-ruptured tendons.
- 17:10There's a caveat there as well.
- 17:11If it's been over a year, I tell people it's fine.
- 17:14But yeah.
- 17:16So we don't leave people scared.
- 17:22Maybe you could share, like, I'm sure you have a story of people that have used it, other than my wife.
- 17:29Because, of course, I remember feeling like, wow, that was a miracle.
- 17:33Um, but maybe you have others where, uh, the recovery was so profound that the people were
- 17:41like, that was, that was a miracle.
- 17:43Could you share some of those?
- 17:44Yeah.
- 17:44Yeah.
- 17:44I've got a few, I've got a few stories.
- 17:46So one I often tell when I'm at seminars and stuff is, um, I had a patient who had, uh,
- 17:53plantar fasciopathy, which is the pain in the, in the bottom of the foot feels like
- 17:56they're walking on broken glass.
- 17:59um so she was she was in her 60s and um she'd seen about 10 other practitioners before she saw me
- 18:08and she had spent over ten thousand dollars in two years and she hadn't seen her daughter or
- 18:14granddaughter for over two years because they lived in hong kong and i'm in australia she my
- 18:19patient's in australia um so she couldn't walk far enough to to you know get on a plane and go
- 18:26see her daughter and granddaughter.
- 18:28And, um, when, when she told me after, when, when she first saw
- 18:33me, she was like, oh, you're going to be, you know, just number 11 who failed.
- 18:37And I was like,
- 18:38oh, let's see what we can do.
- 18:41Uh, I had her on a flight to Hong Kong eight weeks after I first saw
- 18:45her.
- 18:46So she was, she was so happy.
- 18:51One that I was able to resolve her, her foot problem, but also
- 18:56that she could go visit her her daughter and granddaughter which was super important for her
- 19:00and it you know it's like we don't think sometimes as practitioners like we're just like oh yeah
- 19:06you know but that really meant the world to this woman that she could you know go see go see her
- 19:11family and uh after that she sent she sent like at least 12 people to see me within the like two
- 19:20years after she was just like any of her friends that had problems she's like go see adam go see
- 19:24Adam, go see Adam.
- 19:25So I, I got a ton of referrals from, from her.
- 19:29And the cool thing too, with her
- 19:31condition is it never came back.
- 19:34Well, let me, let me qualify that.
- 19:37It did come back a little bit
- 19:38and I just gave her like one treatment and then it, it went away again.
- 19:44That was going to be my question is, is how, how long lasting is it?
- 19:48But that's amazing that it
- 19:49didn't come back.
- 19:50Yeah.
- 19:51Yeah.
- 19:51Wow.
- 19:51That's definitely very inspiring.
- 19:53And that's a condition
- 19:54that commonly comes back.
- 19:55And I've, I've had a really high success rate with patients with that
- 20:00condition.
- 20:00I would say I've had about two patients in the past 10 years that I wasn't able to sort
- 20:06out.
- 20:08Um, that's incredible with my treatment.
- 20:10So, you know, and that's typically a condition
- 20:13that most practitioners struggle with.
- 20:15Like I go to seminars and people are like, how do you treat
- 20:17this how do you treat i'm like don't you fix i'm like i fix everybody with this problem they're
- 20:23like how and i'm like you just do this and they're all like oh okay so um the device sells itself
- 20:31yeah unfortunately that's that's the problem is i forget that not all practitioners know what i know
- 20:40and i take that for granted i'm like well and so part of our goal for wasabi method is i want
- 20:47all practitioners to know this information and be able to sort this.
- 20:50I want, if you went to any,
- 20:53you know, physio, chiro, podiatrist, anywhere in the States,
- 20:59I'm hoping that you could get the same result as you get with me.
- 21:02That's my goal is to train
- 21:04people up so that anywhere you go, you get the same result, which is basically sort me out,
- 21:11tell me what I need to do and let's get rid of this problem.
- 21:14But that's,
- 21:15that is not at all the current state of affairs.
- 21:18The McDonald's of,
- 21:20of healthcare,
- 21:20no matter where you go in the world,
- 21:22the hamburgers still taste the same.
- 21:24Yeah.
- 21:24Yeah.
- 21:26Yeah.
- 21:26Well,
- 21:28I'm wanting to ask though,
- 21:31given the nature of this podcast,
- 21:33everyday ancestral,
- 21:35how do you integrate lifestyle factors such as nutrition,
- 21:41and mental well-being into your treatment plans?
- 21:44Well, it's pivotal.
- 21:46Like I tell people, you have to address all these things.
- 21:52You can't just, because if someone has a crappy diet,
- 21:57if someone's stressed out to the max,
- 21:58if someone's not sleeping well,
- 22:00if someone's not exercising at all,
- 22:04it makes my job way harder
- 22:08because the body just can't heal like it should.
- 22:13You haven't given it the right things.
- 22:15Again, if we go back to the plant analogy,
- 22:18it'd be like a plant that's not getting enough water,
- 22:20a plant that's not getting the proper soil
- 22:22and a plant that's not getting adequate sunlight.
- 22:25Like how's that plant gonna thrive?
- 22:27It can't, right?
- 22:29So when I work with people,
- 22:32like I don't bash them over the head with these things.
- 22:35I just, again, I always check to see where they're at.
- 22:39And there's a real skill, like I have a friend that develops programs with universities to help teach practitioners how to communicate with patients.
- 22:52And that's, that is such a skill, um, that we, we are not, we're not really taught that when we go, when we go through university, we're just taught, learn the anatomy, learn the biomechanics, learn the physiology, and then don't worry about communication.
- 23:10You know how to talk.
- 23:12And it's like, it's, it's so unfortunate because if we simply knew how to communicate and meet people where they're at and actually listen to people, like half the time, like when I help patients that haven't been able to get results with other practitioners, all I did was just listen to them.
- 23:36And they tell me the answer.
- 23:39all i got to do is listen like i love the analogy you have you have one of these and two of these
- 23:45use them in that ratio oh i've never heard that actually i love that yeah so that's there you go
- 23:52there's there's a good one for those that were listening pointed one one you point to your mouth
- 23:56so you only have one mouth and you have two ears yeah so you you should use them in in that ratio
- 24:02now i'm not doing that today with you i'm doing i'm doing a lot more mouth but i'm just sharing my
- 24:07No, I'm grateful you are.
- 24:09You're, you're, uh, you're just, you, you know, your stuff.
- 24:12And I,
- 24:13and I cannot stress how miraculous what you did to Margaret when we met felt.
- 24:20You took her from below empty.
- 24:23I mean, she felt at her worst and you brought her to it, you know,
- 24:30half a tank, at least maybe even three, four.
- 24:32I mean, she's, she's way better now, but you,
- 24:34you got her to a place where she did not know she could get.
- 24:38And I think that's, you know, before we end,
- 24:40I think let's talk about that because that's really fascinating to me is
- 24:45because I almost feel like, yes, you helped her knee,
- 24:49but what you really helped was her mindset that she wasn't broken.
- 24:53Yes.
- 24:54Yeah.
- 24:55And that's going to exactly what I'm saying is the communication.
- 24:59So what I had to do with Margaret was I had to make her feel safe.
- 25:05That was the most important thing because she felt vulnerable.
- 25:10She felt like, I can't walk.
- 25:14I'm going to, my knee's going to dislocate.
- 25:17Right?
- 25:18So the cool thing is when you're a practitioner
- 25:21like me is people have faith in you because, you know, I've got a couple degrees up on the wall.
- 25:29They go, well, he knows his stuff.
- 25:31Right?
- 25:31So they automatically have faith in me.
- 25:34And so
- 25:34they listen better.
- 25:36So I told her, I said, look, your kneecap's not going to dislocate again.
- 25:42I
- 25:42promise you.
- 25:43I've seen this before.
- 25:45It won't happen.
- 25:46Okay.
- 25:47So then I planted the seed and
- 25:49then she's like, okay.
- 25:51So then she's, she's challenging the information that her brain is,
- 25:58giving her.
- 26:00Because her brain's saying, it's unsafe.
- 26:05It's going to dislocate.
- 26:06You're going
- 26:06to hurt yourself.
- 26:07Don't do anything.
- 26:09And then she listens to me and I'm saying, that's not true.
- 26:13Are you going to believe your brain?
- 26:14Are you going to believe someone who's studied this for,
- 26:17you know, 20 years?
- 26:19And so her brain goes to, I'm going to go with the expert because he knows his
- 26:24stuff.
- 26:26And then she started to trust me, but also I got, I start, I did really gentle stuff.
- 26:33Even though the first day I worked on her, I actually didn't use the wasabi on her.
- 26:39And that was deliberate because I knew she couldn't handle that.
- 26:45And that's where I was
- 26:46talking about meet people where they're at.
- 26:49So I had to meet her down here because she wasn't
- 26:51ready for that yet.
- 26:53And I knew that.
- 26:54And that, again, that's, that's just because of years of
- 26:57experience knowing how to work with people in these conditions.
- 27:01I was like, you can't handle
- 27:02that.
- 27:03So I did, I did actually didn't even touch her knee.
- 27:05I worked on her ankle and her calf.
- 27:10So because I knew if I worked on her ankle and calf, it's away from the danger zone
- 27:17and that I would get changes that would help her knee.
- 27:22So I can work on her ankle and her calf.
- 27:24It's not going to hurt.
- 27:25So she doesn't feel threatened.
- 27:28It's going to have physiological changes that are going to benefit her knee.
- 27:33And I'm going to get a good result.
- 27:36So that's what I did on the first day.
- 27:37I just worked on her calf and I worked on her ankle
- 27:39and it got her ankle and her calf working better,
- 27:43which had effects on her knee.
- 27:46and she felt that straight away.
- 27:47She's like, oh, that works better.
- 27:48And I go, great, come back tomorrow, we'll do some more.
- 27:52So she left happy because I didn't do too much.
- 27:56Sometimes less is more.
- 27:58A lot of it was just gaining her confidence.
- 28:02And had I gone straight to her knee
- 28:04and done a bunch of stuff to it,
- 28:06I might've flared it up a little bit.
- 28:08And then she would have been like, oh, I don't know if I,
- 28:10the next day she would have been like really apprehensive
- 28:13and she might not even showed up
- 28:15had I done that.
- 28:17So I, I did that.
- 28:18That was very deliberate.
- 28:20And that's a, that's a mistake.
- 28:21A lot
- 28:21of rookie practitioners do.
- 28:23They're like, Oh, let's get in there.
- 28:24Let's know that will not work.
- 28:27That would have failed miserably with, with your wife.
- 28:31I feel like it's a real life lesson.
- 28:34In fact,
- 28:34what you're sharing, I mean, in a sense, you know, whether it's the Russian doll analogy or even
- 28:40peeling the onion it's like sometimes we we treat ourselves with that aggression as well we go oh
- 28:46this is what's wrong or i'm such a jerk for doing this or i'm you know we beat ourselves
- 28:51we're we're our hardest critic yeah and all it does is it then pushes us towards you know eating
- 28:59that pint of ice cream or just feeling shame or these really intense feelings and that maybe
- 29:05I love how you're putting this, that maybe we need to sometimes just approach a very hot situation with gentle eyes and open ears.
- 29:15Yes, 100%.
- 29:17You got it.
- 29:18I love that.
- 29:20It's empathy.
- 29:21Have empathy for yourself.
- 29:23Be kind to your body.
- 29:25A lot of this, you know, hard charging, you know, I'm going to force my body to get fit or whatever.
- 29:33It doesn't make sense.
- 29:34The body works so much better if you work with it instead of against it.
- 29:40Look at it like how you would treat a child or, you know, an animal or a pet, you know, like be kind and listen.
- 29:52Listen, your body tells you the answers.
- 29:54Because like I had a patient yesterday and she's like, what should I do this weekend?
- 29:58And I'm like, just try a few things and listen to what your body likes and what it doesn't like.
- 30:05If you do something and it feels like it's flaring it up, stop doing that.
- 30:10It's not rocket science.
- 30:12But some people just, it's almost like people need to be given permission.
- 30:15it's like a lot of the time i just feel like i'm a teacher or like a principal giving people
- 30:21permission it's like you can do that just not too much right so it's just listen to your body is it
- 30:29there's so many it's this have you heard the term interoception no so interoception it means
- 30:38checking in with your body so you know when you do like meditation they'll be like focus on your
- 30:45left big toe.
- 30:46Now focus on your pinky toe.
- 30:49Now focus on your ankle.
- 30:51And you go up.
- 30:52That's
- 30:52interoception.
- 30:54So we have nerve endings that go to every part of our body.
- 31:00Right.
- 31:00But you're not
- 31:01thinking of every part of your body all day long.
- 31:03Right.
- 31:03That's like, how is your how's your
- 31:05pancreas feel today?
- 31:06You're like, oh, let me check, you know, or how is how's your right pinky
- 31:11toe feeling.
- 31:12You actually have to think about it, right?
- 31:16And then you go, oh, well, it's not sore,
- 31:19and I can feel it that I can move it.
- 31:22So this idea of interoception is very powerful,
- 31:26and it's something we've lost in our modern day society.
- 31:30And that's why meditation is very
- 31:32powerful because if you drop in and feel what's going on in your body, it makes you very focused.
- 31:43You're not worrying about what's for dinner.
- 31:45You're not worrying about what time I got to
- 31:48pick up the kids.
- 31:48You're not worried about your taxes because we can only do one thing at a time.
- 31:55If I'm thinking about my pinky toe, I'm not thinking about my taxes.
- 32:01All right, so just doing that just calms people the hell down
- 32:06Right, you don't worry about all that shit that shit will be there
- 32:11When you come out of your meditation
- 32:14Your taxes will still be there.
- 32:15They still need to get filed or done or whatever, right?
- 32:19but
- 32:20Why don't you take 10 minutes out of your day?
- 32:23And not worry about that stuff
- 32:25And guess what that does to your nervous system?
- 32:28it down regulates it takes you out of fight or flight gets you into parasympathetic that's when
- 32:33your body heals and repairs we're meant to be in parasympathetic pretty much all day long
- 32:42right we're designed to only go into sympathetic which is fight flight freeze or fawn when we have
- 32:50a threat.
- 32:52Now you shouldn't have threats all day long.
- 32:55Like, are, do you feel under threat right
- 32:57now?
- 32:59No, no.
- 33:01Right.
- 33:01So you should be parasympathetic.
- 33:03The only time, you know, like if you're crossing
- 33:05the street, maybe because there's, you know, oncoming cars, but that's a good thing because
- 33:11it gets you to move your ass and cross the street before that car hits you.
- 33:16Right.
- 33:16So there, so don't
- 33:18think of them as good and bad.
- 33:19Just think of them as systems.
- 33:22And our default is should be
- 33:26in the parasympathetic, which is, which is feed and breed and rest.
- 33:34Right?
- 33:34So when we're in
- 33:35parasympathetic, we digest our food way better, which I'm sure you know tons about.
- 33:40Um, and we
- 33:42We also, our body heals, right?
- 33:47Because if you're getting chased by a saber-toothed tiger, your brain goes,
- 33:50should I fix that kidney infection we're dealing with?
- 33:54Or should I run away?
- 33:56Your brain makes an executive decision.
- 33:58It goes, what's going to kill us first?
- 34:01Probably the saber-toothed tiger.
- 34:03So it goes, I'm going to take away the blood flow from the kidney,
- 34:08put it into your legs so you can run as fast as you can so you don't die right which makes sense
- 34:16but nowadays we have so much stress that our brain thinks we're being chased by saber-toothed tigers
- 34:24all day long and then we never go into parasympathetic and then our body never gets
- 34:30the opportunity to heal that kidney infection and all of a sudden it becomes chronic
- 34:37and now you need a kidney replacement or something.
- 34:40That's how a lot of these problems occur
- 34:43because our body just, we're so stressed.
- 34:48And, you know, and the funny thing is people, you know,
- 34:50they go to yoga or meditation like once a week
- 34:52and it's like, they go, oh, I feel so good.
- 34:55It's because for one hour, once a week,
- 34:57they go into parasympathetic and they feel good.
- 35:02But that's, that should be the default.
- 35:04That should be our default.
- 35:05Yeah, absolutely.
- 35:35individual, what's your warmup for your day physically?
- 35:39And really we could take that
- 35:40energetically, mentally, you know, having a warmup in a sense that's unique to you.
- 35:46I really like that.
- 35:48How can people learn more about Wasabi Method?
- 35:52How can they find you?
- 35:54And are there ways for people to work with you remotely?
- 35:57yeah yeah you can um so our main platform for social media is is instagram so we're
- 36:07at wasabi underscore method our website is wasabimethod.com
- 36:16um i have for my my clinic is back to function.com.au so it's back b-a-c-k and then t-o
