- 0:02This is an unspoiled network podcast. This is spoil Me covering one piece the
- 0:12animated series on Netflix, episode five, Eat at Barati Verity. I don't
- 0:22recall. I'm so excited, you guys, because we're finally getting to meet
- 0:27Sanji. And I will tell you what. He's so charming and they have
- 0:32made him just understated enough so far with his flirting that I can tolerate this
- 0:39quite easily. Welcome to spoil Me. Welcome to the show everyone. I
- 1:03am Natasha. Thank you so much to Gabby for commissioning this episode. I
- 1:07am loving the show so much, you guys, and I had forgotten that
- 1:14long before the show came out. We actually saw the I'm gonna call it
- 1:19Barazzi because I feel like that's what I remember them how they pronounced it.
- 1:23But we saw the set that they had built. It was getting a lot
- 1:27of attention because it is extremely fucking elaborate, and I was so impressed with
- 1:36it. Even in those stills. I was just like, Wow, they're
- 1:38really fucking going for it. That's the first thing that gave me some real
- 1:42like huh, maybe they're gonna do something actually, But I had forgotten about
- 1:49it by the time we watched, so I sort of had it in my
- 1:53head that when we reached this point, the ship was going to be only
- 2:00ever shot at angles where you saw a portion of it, because it would
- 2:05be like we were putting it together in our heads, and that there would
- 2:07be one establishing shot that was really just cgi. So I forgot how lovely
- 2:15this place looks, and it's even better with all the people aboard and it
- 2:19lit and everything. It looks so good. But of course I'm getting ahead
- 2:23of myself, because we actually start this episode where we left off, where
- 2:27we have Loofy up against Garp his grandpa. Now we have a flashback here
- 2:36to Loofy building this slow, like you know, shitty raft on the beach,
- 2:44and he is really enjoying himself. It's actually like for this little kid,
- 2:52a pretty mean piece of engineering this raft. And his grandpa comes up
- 2:59hearing this yellow Hawaiian print shirt with like a long sleeve underneath it. I
- 3:07don't know why, but this outfit gets me so gigly, and Ohen was
- 3:10like, I like that shirt actually, but yeah, he shows up and
- 3:15says, what is the meaning of this? And how do you expect to
- 3:21be a marine when you're wasting your time on this, and Lufy says,
- 3:27I don't want to be a marine. I'm a pirate, and Garb completely
- 3:34loses his shit and just tears this boat apart piece by piece. The mean,
- 3:40like the meanness of this moment. I absolutely cannot with adults who want
- 3:50to like shit all over the dreams of a little kid, even if it
- 3:53is the kid, is like professing to want to do something that you don't
- 3:57believe is worthwhile. Dreams that people have when they are small children are so
- 4:03rarely the same dreams they wind up having later. You know, Lufy being
- 4:06a very particular exception, because he is the exception to every rule in so
- 4:11many ways. But honestly, it's just like there's a certain things that it's
- 4:17not worth wasting your time getting upset about because they are going to be so
- 4:21fleeting that ultimately I don't really feel like you need to worry. And there's
- 4:28an episode of Boneset because I've been rewatching it where this girl is about to
- 4:31like choose what college she's going to based on where her boyfriend is going,
- 4:38and she got accepted to like Brown and wants to go to a state school,
- 4:43and her mother is really upset, and the person that she asks for
- 4:47advice basically says, just don't fight her because the more you fight her,
- 4:54the more she'll fight back and wait it out and see because like she made
- 5:00change her mind, and ultimately that's what happens. This you know, relationship
- 5:04winds up breaking up, and she chooses to go to the original school that
- 5:10she was accepted at in any way, So all that to say, I
- 5:15was truly surprised. I don't feel and I may be wrong about this because
- 5:23it was so brief, but guys, have we seen any actual scenes where
- 5:30Garp and Loofy are like interacting when he was a kid in this sort of
- 5:35way, Because I was my assumption in this scene was that Lufy was still
- 5:45so young that he hadn't made it clear what he wanted to do yet,
- 5:51and when he tells his grandpa this and they have this confrontation that eventually he
- 5:58is going to you know, come to come to meet Shanks and that's when
- 6:03things will really begin to pop off. But then Owen pointed out to me
- 6:08that Lufy has the hat already in this scene, which indicates that he has
- 6:13already met Shanks. And this whole thing has happened, which because it has
- 6:18been mentioned more than once that Lufy doesn't have any family, I was really
- 6:24confused at the fact that apparently after Shanks is I don't know if he didn't
- 6:30know his grandpa, if he's been lying to people that he doesn't have family
- 6:34because he didn't have really a relationship with his grandfather. This is all stuff
- 6:39that's like kind of from where I'm at in the anime, not an answered
- 6:43question, at least as far as I recall. Again, there may be
- 6:46something established that I have forgotten about. But yeah, his grandpa picks him
- 6:55up and says, your training begins today, but first lunch and stalks away
- 7:02with Loufy tossed over his shoulder. We come back to the present and the
- 7:08back and forth with the cannons. There is an amazing sequence of Usop pretending
- 7:15that he knows how to load a cannon, but he just drops all of
- 7:19the ammunition and it goes like rolling away. And I love because he's been
- 7:25brought on reminder as the sharpshooter, the fact that he doesn't know how to
- 7:30use this. It's tragic. It's so watching these balls roll away. Oh
- 7:34this this pork kid. So this is followed by Garb shooting towards Loofy,
- 7:46and Loofy using his rubber powers to expand himself and then shoot the ball the
- 7:55cannonball directly back at them, which is something that it seems Garp didn't know
- 8:05Lufy was capable of. But again, I thought in the flashback that it
- 8:11had happened early on enough that Lufy didn't have his powers yet until Owen pointed
- 8:16out the hat. So obviously, when he was a little kid, he
- 8:22had been with his grandfather while he had these powers. So I don't know
- 8:26if it's simply that Garp didn't understand the level to which Lufy had trained with
- 8:33them and knew how to use them, or if he just never thought that
- 8:35Lufy would resist him in this kind of way. I don't know. He
- 8:41looks totally shocked in a way that felt like he had no idea Lufy could
- 8:46do this, and I don't know. He starts laughing at this point,
- 8:52and he says not bad boy, not bad and looks almost impressed the fact
- 9:00too, that Lufy is wearing in a Hawaiian shirt of his own, and
- 9:05just that it feels like he's sort of in a way like emulating his grandfather,
- 9:09but unintentionally. There's just a bit of a little like reflection there,
- 9:13you know. And everybody is very impressed with what he has managed to do
- 9:22here. But it is like the way that this scene wraps up, this
- 9:31is so great, you guys, all right? So we have Garb calling
- 9:41up me Hawk and my friends, is that mehwk amazing or what? He's
- 9:52got a dandy sort of vibe about him, but also like a badass.
- 9:58The sequence in which they are talking has him taking out hordes of people at
- 10:07the same time with almost no effort expended that I could see. And the
- 10:16giant sword and the way these guys go literally flying through the air, and
- 10:22Miehawk is doing all of this while chatting as if he has like a bluetooth
- 10:26headset on with Garb, and Garp is telling him, I want you to
- 10:33go handle Loofy and Meehawk is like, why are you calling me to handle
- 10:37him? He sounds like kind of a small fry. I have got better
- 10:41things to do. And Garp has to be like, no, no,
- 10:46no, trust me. There's more to him than meets the eye. Meehowk
- 10:50says one moment, and he does that thing where he just slices downward and
- 10:54an entire ship breaks in half, which we hear about secondhand from the dun
- 11:03Kreek pirates later on. I was very, very excited to really get to
- 11:09see that. And he's just crazy looking his eyes everything. He's got the
- 11:15very yellow eyes. So, guys, and like I'm driving at this this
- 11:20happens like a third of the way in, but I just have to talk
- 11:24about it because you know why, right, you know why. Dunk Kreig
- 11:30is easily, in my opinion, the worst one piece villain. He is
- 11:35boring, he is repetitive, he is tiresome in a personality kind of way.
- 11:43The arc that he was in was way too drawn out. He only
- 11:48ever really seems to like want to do the meanest possible thing, so his
- 11:52motivations are always so flat and uninteresting. And because we were facing off with
- 12:01him outside of the Barati, I have this preoccupation with what's going on in
- 12:07the restaurant, and you know, all of the implications of this place and
- 12:13how we're out here fighting and there's so many more interesting things going on over
- 12:18here, and I just found myself so frustrated during this arc. It's probably
- 12:24the one that a lot of you were worried about me watching, you know,
- 12:28because I know that for me, when I go through things as the
- 12:33spoiled person, I am always aware that there's going to be a spot that
- 12:39trips up my my unspoiled co host that if they were going along for this
- 12:46by themselves for just the pleasure of it, they may have stopped, you
- 12:50know, and I have to convince them that I know what I'm talking about
- 12:54and it's worth it to keep going. So in this scene, Don Kreeg
- 13:03comes up and he looks pretty close to the costume in the show. I'm
- 13:09gonna go ahead and look up Don Kreeg and just see what his outfit looks
- 13:16like, because I feel like it's pretty pretty close. Yeah, okay,
- 13:20because Don Creek Actually that was also part of it. His outfit is a
- 13:24lot less outrageous than most of the villains are. He has a fairly basic
- 13:33look. The only thing that is truly surprising and different are the size of
- 13:39like the epaulets and the forearm guards and otherwise he just kind of looks like
- 13:46a regular guy with armor on and like, you know, a pair of
- 13:50slacks and boots and and everything is like gray, you know, so he
- 13:56even doesn't look exciting and he comes up and Mihawk says, I'm afraid it's
- 14:03time I ended this. Don Kreeg's bounty is seventeen million berries, and he
- 14:09says, you've killed my men, destroyed my fleet. Why are you after
- 14:15me? And Mihawk says, you woke me from my nap. I really
- 14:22don't remember what that is in reference to, but I like to think it's
- 14:26quite literally the case, and don Kraig replies, then, allow me to
- 14:33make it permanent. And a cannon pops up over his shoulder and he shoots
- 14:39with two guns. So we've got a cannonball and the two bullets heading for
- 14:45Meehawk all at once. He manages to knock the bullets aside and slice through
- 14:50the cannon ball. As he does this, the men coming up behind him,
- 14:58who are also don Kreeg's men, get hit with the bullets that have
- 15:03flown to either side of him, and the cannonball just falls to the ground
- 15:09in halves, and he comes towards dun Kreeg, who is standing there like,
- 15:18well shit, I thought I know what I was in for, and
- 15:22I didn't. We cut away, We hear him scream because he is still
- 15:30on the phone reminder with Garp. And then Mihawk comes back and says,
- 15:37apologies, where am I headed? And then we come back to this beach
- 15:41and don Kreeg is on the ground apparently dead. Now, you guys,
- 15:52I don't know what to think, because I recall that dunk Kreeg is pretty
- 16:03injured. If I'm not mistaken in anime, I know that part of it
- 16:08was simply also that he was starving, but I can't remember if there was
- 16:12an injury as well. I am so hopeful this is not a fake out.
- 16:23I want dun Kraig to be dead so badly. You don't understand.
- 16:27I was literally cheering and throwing my fists into the air while watching this scene
- 16:33because I was like, oh my god, they did it. They really
- 16:37did it, and it didn't occur to me until after I got super excited
- 16:41that maybe he's not going to turn out to be dead. But this show
- 16:47hasn't done that kind of like, oh, he looks like he's dead and
- 16:49he's not really thing too much. The only time that it seems like it's
- 16:55going to happen is the end of this very episode, because of Zoro and
- 16:59his face off with me Hawk, but otherwise it doesn't seem like they do
- 17:04that as much in the live action as they do in the anime. So
- 17:10I am really really crossing my fingers that it turns out they fucking did this
- 17:15for real, because I want to believe everybody out there who has seen this
- 17:22show knows that don Kreeg is the worst, and they were just like,
- 17:26let's not do that. There are some things that we can all agree are
- 17:30sacred. You don't change these things. You fucking honor those They're gonna be
- 17:36what everybody's looking forward to. And then there's people like this that everybody is
- 17:41like, oh God, yeah that arc and changing them is a blessing and
- 17:48a mercy on us all. I am so hopeful, Please God, let
- 17:53it, Let it be true, because you know, I don't see.
- 17:57The thing that I get caught up up on is that the whole confrontation between
- 18:03Meehawk and Zoro goes in this pretty much the way it does in the show,
- 18:07with Zoro taking a pretty terrible wound, Mihawk being extremely dismissive of him
- 18:12at first, but then being fairly impressed with him by the time. All
- 18:15is said and done, and so what I had thought maybe was going to
- 18:21happen was that Mihawk was going to wind up taking the place of don Kreek,
- 18:25which, from the way this scene goes and how similar it is,
- 18:30I don't think he's going to be the case. I feel like there's going
- 18:32to have to be a different baddie that turns up here, or they're going
- 18:37to skip that whole face off entirely, which actually wouldn't suck because it isn't
- 18:44necessary for any other plot point to happen. The only thing that I feel
- 18:48like it really lends itself to is because of the overall confusion of everything with
- 18:55don Kreeg and the other ships that are all like moored around the Barati,
- 19:00that I think that from here is where Uh, oh my god, oh
- 19:07my god, guys, what is her name? What is the girl's the
- 19:11redhead's name? I can't believe I'm forgetting her name? Nam you guys,
- 19:17what the fuck? I just almost called her Mina. I had like a
- 19:21dyslexic moment in my own head, like how does that work? Anyway?
- 19:26I am wondering if this is the point where she winds up breaking off and
- 19:30going off on her own. I can't recall, but anyway, I just
- 19:36really really want to believe that's what's going on. And all of this culminates
- 19:42in an interesting sort of ooh, sorry, guys, that's my dog.
- 19:45He hit his head on the desk. He's over here with me. The
- 19:52thing that culminates here is that uh Kobe, who has been listening in on
- 19:56the conversation, he overhears what's happening, which is that we've got a vice
- 20:06admiral colluding with a pirate to bring in Louviy, and he had already been
- 20:14warned. There was a moment that I forgot to mention in the last episode
- 20:18where we have a conversation between him and the Haircut, and Haircut is telling
- 20:30him you think that he really likes you and is so impressed with you,
- 20:34but Garp is only using you because of your relationship to Louviy. And I
- 20:41loved the way this went because Kobe says, you're just jealous, and rather
- 20:48than even argue, Almepo just says, doesn't mean I'm wrong. I love
- 20:53that he just cops to being jealous, but also is like and which enough
- 21:00so we get this repeated moment kind of where how MEPO is like explaining to
- 21:08Kobe, Yeah, well they were unbeatable pirates, and so the world government
- 21:15was like, well, just instead of trying to catch them, we'll have
- 21:19them work for us, and we will use them to do the kinds of
- 21:25things that we don't want trace back to us. And Kobe kind of starts
- 21:30to argue, and how MEPO interrupts and is like, Kobe, you may
- 21:34have been on a ship and know your way around a fucking not, but
- 21:40you have no goddamn idea how the actual world works. And Kobe winds up
- 21:45kind of confronting Garp and being like is it true? And at first Garp
- 21:53is just kind of like, I can't believe you were out there listening to
- 21:56my phone call. That was really rude. But then pops the fact like,
- 22:00yeah, it is true. And I kind of liked the way this
- 22:04was handled because instead of Kobe just going with like the righteous indignation, how
- 22:08could you? Instead, what he says is if this is how the Marines
- 22:15operates, I am not sure I am cut out for this after all,
- 22:19you know, instead of trying to be like I am holding you responsible for
- 22:26doing this, like thing that betrays the ideals of the Marines. The way
- 22:33he talks is like he has accepted that this is the way the Marines really
- 22:38works and has like gotten past the oh this is like a personal failing of
- 22:47Garp and instead is simply part of the way the system is designed to work,
- 22:51which I admire because so much of the time in a story like this,
- 22:56you have somebody become disillusioned, but they at first think that there is
- 23:00one particular person who is responsible for like breaking the trust that an entire organization
- 23:07is meant to represent, and you have to just wait for them to figure
- 23:11out that this person is one of many who do the same thing. So
- 23:15I'm glad that we got to skip through it and just be like Kobe,
- 23:18going, I don't know if I want to do this. And it's an
- 23:22interesting like parallel to the stories that you hear from people who become police and
- 23:29they start to like see the way police really function, what's expected of them
- 23:33just in training in terms of turning a blind eye to stuff and being willing
- 23:37to like have somebody's back despite the fact that they are very ethically questionable and
- 23:48they oftentimes have a sort of crisis of faith and decide that they can't stomach
- 23:53what they are being asked to do, and Garbs like his response here is
- 24:00just as frustrating as any cops would be. What he says is essentially he
- 24:08doesn't play by their rules as much as they want him to, which is
- 24:15why he has never accepted the promotions that they have tried to offer him,
- 24:21and if he did, he would lose his freedom. So the implication here
- 24:26is that as long as he stays vice Admiral and isn't given a higher position
- 24:30than that, he can get away with a lot more without it being held
- 24:37against him. Really, which it's sort of a weird thing because you know,
- 24:42there's also this argument with police that like, oh, well, I'm
- 24:47going to try and change the system from the inside, and that almost feels
- 24:51like what Garpe is saying, but there's not really an implication that he wants
- 24:53to change the system. It really feels for me like with Loofy, it's
- 24:56just he's family and I want to bend the rules for this guy that I
- 25:00care about. I just don't I don't really like buy this explanation of like,
- 25:11well, yeah, there are some fucked up things, but also in
- 25:15the end, the Marines are what stand between us an anarchy and the fact
- 25:21that he's like, I need my freedom, I need to be able to
- 25:25do what I want to do, but also the Marines need to be around
- 25:29to tell everybody what to do. And I'm just like, that's a real
- 25:33I really threaten a needle there, sir, And I don't feel like this
- 25:37actually makes sense. And I even ultimately he says like, can you live
- 25:47with that? Because that's the way it works, is when you become a
- 25:49marine, you decide what you can live with. And Kobe just nods,
- 25:56and it seems like has accepted what it is that Garp is saying here.
- 26:02I can't, like, I can't blame Kobe in the midst of all of
- 26:07this. I can understand not wanting to give up on his dream right away
- 26:12and being like, well, let's wait it out a little bit further.
- 26:15At least Garp didn't, you know, insult his intelligence by arguing whether or
- 26:22not this was going on at all. He just immediately cops to it,
- 26:26which I can respect. But I just really kind of felt like I wanted
- 26:32Kobe to call out what he was saying for the bullshit. It was a
- 26:36little bit more so anyway, that's how that goes. We're gonna jump back
- 26:44again here and we have all of our friends. They are sailing it in
- 26:48a mist and he has been hiding up on the bow and not me.
- 27:00Really is like, I need him to explain to us how he never mentioned
- 27:07that his grandfather was the vice admiral, a vice admiral in the Marines.
- 27:12Like when she says I want him to talk to us about that thing,
- 27:17I think it's Zorro who says what thing? And she's like, what do
- 27:19you mean what thing? I'm trying to Oh yeah, Usup says, oh
- 27:26that, yeah, I don't really know the guy that well doesn't seem like
- 27:30a big deal, says Zorro. And she's like, this feels like if
- 27:36you're his first mate, you should really know this. And Zorro kind of
- 27:42gives her and Oosup will look like do you agree, and Usup just sort
- 27:48of grimaces in a like, man, don't get me involved kind of way.
- 27:52So Zora goes over to talk to Loofy and the fog. Here,
- 27:56guys, it's very intense, like it's pretty fun. Whow Zoro is trying
- 28:03to have this talk with Loofy and is so unable to, like he's not
- 28:07good at connecting in this way. And then there's like the literal obscuring of
- 28:14him with the fog in the background, like he feels so distant in every
- 28:18sense. In this scene, he starts out with just like, so,
- 28:22how are you doing? Do you want to talk about the battle? And
- 28:26Lufy says nope, And he says okay, good talk and comes back to
- 28:30Nami and says he seems fine to me. Oh, honestly, I really
- 28:38enjoy that. So this is fun. Loofy shoots his head up and says,
- 28:44do you guys smell that? And he starts sniffing wildly at the air.
- 28:48Now, I just want to put in my appreciation for a detail here.
- 28:53I don't know that this is even related, like if it's a non
- 28:56purpose thing, but I like to think it is. I don't know how
- 29:03many of you have noticed this, but I have a very good sense of
- 29:06smell, which is part of why I'm good at cooking, and it is
- 29:11extremely noticeable the difference in the variety of sense that I can pick up when
- 29:18it is humid versus when it is dry, And that goes for hot weather
- 29:25cold weather, like if it's hot and humid, of course even more so,
- 29:29but even cold and humid, you pick up a lot more. It's
- 29:33part of why having a sion in the house like, it's not even just
- 29:37about the cooling factor. It pulls moisture out of the air, which keeps
- 29:41everything from smelling a lot more strongly inside of your house. And I like
- 29:45to think that this fog is here to like indicate why he is able to
- 29:55smell this from so far away in such detail. I am making that up,
- 30:00but I just personally like it. And so yeah, smells like butter
- 30:04and then he sniffs again and soy sauce. And at this point I went
- 30:11yes and just like did a fist punch and O and started laughing. Because
- 30:15I knew we were going to see Sonji. Now, I was very very
- 30:18excited about it. I didn't look at the title of the episode, so
- 30:23I had no idea that's what we were getting. I try not to read
- 30:26the titles because they can be very spoilery. So I am. I was
- 30:33just so thrilled because I had been wanting to see Sanji and I didn't realize
- 30:37how long it was going to be before he joined the crew, which makes
- 30:40sense. I'm not complaining it's done well, this is how it should work,
- 30:44but I hadn't stopped to think about it. So yeah, this is
- 30:48when Lufy is like, oh, there is somebody somewhere cooking. And then
- 30:52you see like him on the figurehead like just sniffing and pointing, and he
- 31:00is navigating so like three degrees back to port four degrees and he just never
- 31:10has ever been able to do this, but now that it's about food,
- 31:14he is zeroing in like a fucking bloodhound. And you see this light in
- 31:18the distance and they all are just kind of like, wait, what is
- 31:23that because they could just about see the sign, and they sail out of
- 31:32the fog bank into this big like crystal clear. You know. It seems
- 31:37like the bank they were in just ends, and you can see the barati
- 31:41with its fish heads sticking out one side with the bar in it, and
- 31:45all of these couches and every guy's that looks so fucking cool. I loved
- 31:52this so much. What fun? You know? This is stuff like this
- 31:56was what drew me to theater Tech in the first place, and gradually I
- 32:00began to realize how unlikely it will be that you are involved with something of
- 32:07this scale, and even if you are involved, you're just going to be
- 32:10asked to do like the reading and executing of plans. It's unlikely you get
- 32:16to do the designing. And I just got impatient and bailed. But it's
- 32:21moments like this that I'm like, Okay, yeah, this was where a
- 32:24lot of that dream was coming from. Because it is just so satisfying to
- 32:29see this made real and it really makes me think about in the like some
- 32:36of the first episodes of Covering the anime, I was talking about a one
- 32:40piece amusement park, and you could use this in that amusement park. You
- 32:46could make something like this. It would be a destination. You would have
- 32:51to take reservations. Everybody would want to eat at the actual barati that you
- 32:57have, like floating in a harbor that you you've made. You know this
- 33:00would be such an attraction. But yeah, So Lufy is like, oh,
- 33:07I know what we're gonna do next, and Nami says, disguise the
- 33:13ship so the Marines can't find us. It's up says, sail back to
- 33:15Syrup village where it's safe, and I'm like, why would it be safe
- 33:19there? And then I thought maybe it would be because the Marines have already
- 33:22hit it, and they wouldn't necessarily find like, they wouldn't necessarily think that
- 33:25Lufy double back and go there, And of course Lufy says not, let's
- 33:31eat. And I had totally forgotten that Lufy has no money. So what
- 33:42ends up happening, of course, is that he can't pay and he gets
- 33:45put into a you know, into the kitchen to do dishes to make up
- 33:51the bill. I'd forgotten all about that. We have the fucking fish guy,
- 33:57the Mayer d forgot all about this. It's so great. There's a
- 34:00whole like do you have reservations? No, do I need them? And
- 34:06then USAP being like, well, it seems like you don't recognize Loufy,
- 34:09and the guy makes it seem like, oh, of course, we'll get
- 34:12you a table. But he then whispers under his breath in three weeks while
- 34:19USAP and Lufy walk away, so Namy hears it and she pays him.
- 34:23She gives him a bribe to get them a table, which succeeds. And
- 34:30I have to assume that USAP and Lufy are still under the impression that it
- 34:35was his name that got them the table, because they don't know Nami did
- 34:38this, you know. So they get seated. It's a really lovely like
- 34:45long booth table. I love this bit with Zoro trying to figure out how
- 34:50to sit with all of his fucking swords and he has to sort of perch
- 34:52on the edge. Oh my god, it's so great, you guys.
- 35:00So they're all just like sitting out here waiting to be seen by a waiter.
- 35:06And then we go back into the kitchen and we see Sani cooking making
- 35:12it looks like this beautiful seared tuna. I don't know what the sauce is,
- 35:16but it is exquisite. The plating, it's just for me. That
- 35:23is an appetizer, I hope, sir, because that is so very very
- 35:29little food. And he is being yelled at by I assume the sous chef,
- 35:38saying he's slowing down the line. This isn't on tonight's menu. I
- 35:44wouldn't expect you to understand. And this is when he mentions one of the
- 35:52blondes out in the dining room, so we get our first taste of the
- 35:55fact that he's a bit of a lothario, like that word, a true
- 36:02bluefin saute elephant tuna seared asparagus in a sweet soy reduction. I want to
- 36:12know what that wafer is that he added. It has the look of coral,
- 36:20which is cool, and it reminds me of meltzing parmesan cheese on a
- 36:25pan and creating those like little crisps that you can make. But I don't
- 36:30know if that's really what it is and they've just added a little red food
- 36:34coloring or if it's like an entirely different thing. But yeah, so of
- 36:38course Zeph who is the head chef, He's like, yeah, this is
- 36:45not on the menu. I didn't ask you to make this, so we're
- 36:47getting rid of it. And he goes and puts it on a stack of
- 36:51dirty dishes being brought over to the sink so that it's totally intact. Later
- 36:54when Loofy comes in so that he can try it, and I love son,
- 37:00She says, if I have to do, I have to read this
- 37:05line, you guys, because it's if I got a sling one more prime
- 37:15rib medium, Well, I'm gonna die of boredom, you old shit bag.
- 37:29I'm going to drop dead of boredom. And prime rib medium, well,
- 37:36he calls it an insult to the meat. I this the pain that
- 37:44he feels. Oh my god, I get it, I really really do
- 37:49you guys. I know that it's very easy to look at me and be
- 37:53like, of course, the fat girl has strong feelings about food, and
- 37:57that's valid, like to a point, it is what it looks like.
- 38:01But also I take food very very seriously in a way that a lot of
- 38:07people don't. And I think part of where it comes from for me is
- 38:15the rarity with which I can afford some ingredients. And I am going to
- 38:21find out the exact best way to treat a piece of meat that is going
- 38:25to cost what that costs. Like there is there are so many steaks out
- 38:32there that are at least like fifty dollars for the one steak, and are
- 38:38you going to medium well that like seventy dollars piece of meat? Like why
- 38:49you are ruining it? Why? And I feel this way about like in
- 38:53a restaurant as well, you're paying even more because you're paying the restaurant price
- 39:00and you're gonna order it like that. And I firmly believe that a lot
- 39:05of the people who order these things, like you know, the argument that
- 39:08I come up against is just let people like things how they like them,
- 39:12like they don't have to all. But I firmly believe that a lot of
- 39:15people who order things a certain way have simply never tried it in any other
- 39:22way, so they don't know what they're missing, which is more of the
- 39:25tragedy for me. And I have this a lot with Owen when we first
- 39:30got together and I was cooking for him all the time. You guys,
- 39:32there were so many foods that he thought he didn't like, and I wound
- 39:38up preparing them for him in the way they should be. And it turns
- 39:43out he loves these foods. He has only ever had the ruined version of
- 39:49them, and so he thought he didn't. And I just look, I'm
- 39:52not going to spend too much time on this, but you guys, honestly,
- 39:55I just love Sanji and his anger here him calling him an old shit
- 40:00bag. I could not stop laughing. So, yeah, he gets sent
- 40:05to weight tables and he handles it a lot less like a waiter than he
- 40:10does. He almost treats it like he's a somalier, like he's wandering around
- 40:19just sort of checking on people and whatnot. And that's not really as Malia's
- 40:22job, but you know what I'm saying, Like, I'm trying to think
- 40:23it's almost like a host, but even a lot of hosts don't really do
- 40:28this manager, I guess would really be the thing. So he swoops out
- 40:34and he is getting in between these two dudes who are about to fight.
- 40:40One of them is the pink haired dude who winds up being friends with the
- 40:44guy that isn't actually in the show. I guess with the heart shaped glasses,
- 40:47the McJagger type. But I am really wondering if we're going to see
- 40:53more of him or if this is kind of it, this little scene.
- 40:57I'm not mad either way. But he had come out. He's got what
- 41:00looks like a plate of popovers, and he says, you know, we
- 41:05don't do fighting here. And I love this pirate saying there won't be a
- 41:08fight. I'm just gonna kill him, and Sanji's trying to smooth it out
- 41:13with I'll like, I'd like to pour each of you a glass of whatever
- 41:17drink on the house, and I you guys, Then we get our first
- 41:24beautiful moment. Pink Hare pulls a gun as the pirate is about to pull
- 41:30his own weapon. I don't know what it is. Lufy kicks the gun
- 41:32out of his hands, kicks that pirate in the face, and all of
- 41:39this, by the way, still holding the plate of popovers, which he
- 41:43does not spill because he doesn't waste food. Then he puts them on the
- 41:47table and essentially like stomps on pink Hare's face. It is the dopest like
- 41:53it's so fast and it's so sudden, and he has been such a restrained,
- 42:00polite guy, and then to have him just bust this out, it's
- 42:05wonderful. And he picks the plate up again and he just says, no
- 42:13cause for alarm, folks, enjoy your meals. And he goes over to
- 42:16Lufy's table. I can't you guys, he's so salty. Hi, Welcome
- 42:24to our shitty restaurant where the only thing worse than the ambiance is the food.
- 42:30My name is SANGI. What can I get for you? Lufy says,
- 42:36one of everything, please, one of our signature cocktails to help you
- 42:39choke down your meal, and Nammy says, wow, really giving us the
- 42:45hard sell. And he looks at her and you see his eyes light up
- 42:49a little. Apologies, madam, I didn't see you. There will you
- 42:52care for an aparteve before we start, we have several rare mccoa. I
- 42:59don't know how to say that, vintages in stock, or perhaps you'd like
- 43:01a glass of ume issue, you know, something sweet for someone sweet.
- 43:07And he winks at her and she says, is there's something wrong with your
- 43:10eye? And he says, just blinded by your beauty. Oh, anyway,
- 43:20so they're having two beers. Loofy wants milk, which I feel like
- 43:25is in the anime and feels completely on brand. And for Madam water still
- 43:32sparkling mineral with ice or without cubed or crushed, and she says, regular
- 43:39water in a regular glass. Thanks, And I'm thinking he didn't ask about
- 43:45the glass. Nomm me. You didn't say do you want crushed ice?
- 43:52Do you want ice at all? You didn't really answer the question. But
- 43:55you know she's indicating that she doesn't care. It's just one of those things
- 44:00for me. Oh, I'm sorry, Michael, is in the chat.
- 44:02I do not have a good sense of smell the sad face. Sometimes that's
- 44:07a good thing, Michael. A good chef uses only the best indignance.
- 44:14I like that. I think I might steal that Michael. So yeah,
- 44:20he says right away, and as he walks away, all the guys give
- 44:24Na me these looks, and we have a bit of a moment of like,
- 44:30oh, all of us are in on this together, like joking around,
- 44:32and it's a real team feeling like we're we have in jokes. And
- 44:39you just see Lufy looking like very satisfied with the fact that they're all like
- 44:44giggling together here. You know, he looks like this is everything he wanted,
- 44:50you know, in that smile that he has. So we have everybody
- 44:58getting their drinks, and Lufy says, uh, we need to have a
- 45:04toast to celebrate our victory, and of course Usup is willing to do a
- 45:10clink glasses with him. Zoro smiles, but Nami is like, what victory
- 45:19are we celebrating. I don't know if you've been in a lot of naval
- 45:23battles. I love USUP saying two dozen at least, but we were unprepared,
- 45:31uncoordinated. By all rights, we should be at the bottom of the
- 45:36sea. That was a disaster, and Usup says, but we're not because
- 45:40Lufy saved us. And I was wanting her to just say, like,
- 45:46well, look no offense us up, but we are definitely going to have
- 45:50to get you to learn how to fucking fill a cannon, like at the
- 45:53very least. But instead she jumps over to the marine thing and you see
- 45:59Lufy sober little bit, and she says, I didn't sign up for that.
- 46:04Zoro tries to be like, well, we rated a marine base,
- 46:07of course they're going to be after you, and she says, well,
- 46:12I rated the marine base by myself to steal a map and slip out without
- 46:15them ever seeing me. And then he shows up and we have to completely
- 46:21fucking wreck the place. So no, I did not sign up for that.
- 46:25That's not part of the deal that I This was all accidental. So
- 46:30the bill comes, Loofy writes something at the bottom of it and hands it
- 46:36back to Sanji, and Sanji reads it, gets a big smile and says,
- 46:43no, sir, thank you, which really the vibe of it is
- 46:47that Lufy left an enormous tip, But what it actually is is that he
- 46:53knows Zef is going to be really fucking pissed and he cannot wait to deliver
- 46:57the bad news. So anyway we come back, Lufy is saying, we
- 47:02showed them they can't just roll over us. We can handle anything. And
- 47:07here comes Zeph. Who the hell is monkey dee loofy. You seem to
- 47:14be confused about the rules of the house, but the Barati does not offer
- 47:19credit. You eat, you pay, and Lufy is like, no,
- 47:22no, no, See the thing is I have the money, I just
- 47:27haven't gotten it yet. Add this to my treasure tab. I may not
- 47:34look like a big deal yet, but you're talking with the future king of
- 47:37the Pirates. And I love Zeph looking at him like he really doesn't know
- 47:42whether this kid is fucking with him or not, Like we know he's dead
- 47:45serious, but there would be every reason to think this is all in bad
- 47:51faith. So he gets dragged into the kitchen and this is when he tastes
- 47:58uh sanji he's cooking that has been left over here, and gives him a
- 48:04look like, oh shit, this guy is really good. I think it's
- 48:09sort of a shame that Zef won't even taste Sangie's cooking. He calls him
- 48:14little egg plant as well, and I can't recall if he calls him that
- 48:16in the show, because I didn't watch the dub at that point. I
- 48:20was still watching the sub so I feel like it had to have been a
- 48:22different little nickname. But yeah, Zef is just telling him, you're never
- 48:29going to cook in my restaurant, have you got it? And this is
- 48:32when Lufy looks over and is like, oh damn. So we get a
- 48:39pretty fun at the bar sequence with our three other friends, where Zoro is
- 48:47just like, we have dealt with a lot of bad guys so far,
- 48:51Killer Butler's psycho clowns, I don't think that this vice admiral is going to
- 48:54be able to do shit to us, and Nami says, you don't get
- 48:58it. I can't get caught, not when I'm so close, and stops
- 49:04herself before she says anything, and then says, anybody ready for another drink?
- 49:09And she takes off over here. We've got us up sucking down one
- 49:15of those huge like scorpion bulls, which is meant for two people at minimum,
- 49:22by himself and talking about how he doesn't think there's even any alcohol on
- 49:25it, and there he says it tastes like candy, and Zoro says,
- 49:31the last time I said that, I woke up under a table. So
- 49:37Nami goes up to the bar and says, who would I talk to if
- 49:43I wanted to secure passion passive passions, you would talk to Sanji madam passage
- 49:49to the Kenomi Island. I want to find passage just for myself. I
- 49:55think it's interesting. Everybody else talks about money in the plural, like fifteen
- 50:05million berries, she always says it in the singular, like it's a fifteen
- 50:09million barry bounty. And here when he says like it'll cost you, she
- 50:16says, I have barry, which is? It just feels kind of weird,
- 50:22do you know what I'm saying? And I don't know if that's purposeful
- 50:27in the script that she say it differently than everybody else to indicate something or
- 50:30what. But yeah, he tells her to be ready to sail at dawn,
- 50:35and you can see her just really considering whether or not she wants to
- 50:39do. She hasn't committed yet, you know. And Loofy then has a
- 50:46conversation with Sanji about how he tasted his food and he's a really good cook.
- 50:55Why is zeph making you wait tables? And Sonchi says, well,
- 51:00because he's jealous. I should be running the place. But the old man's
- 51:02so stubborn. It'll never happen, and Lufy says, so that's your dream
- 51:07to be like the head chef, and Sonji says, no, I like
- 51:15I want to go to the West Blue I think is the one for him?
- 51:21Or no, the All Blue. I forgot the All Blue. I
- 51:22can't believe I did that. He also, by the way, has a
- 51:24cigarette here. He did not have a cigarette at all up until this moment,
- 51:29and I sort of wondered if he was if we were just not getting
- 51:31smoking sonjy at all. I really, as much as I love the cigarette
- 51:36thing, I would have kind of understood had they not done it. But
- 51:39I'm glad they did. And yeah, he describes the All Blue and all
- 51:45of the ingredients that are, you know, the kinds of shit you can
- 51:51never find anywhere else, And Lufy says, if you want to cook,
- 51:57you should cook. Don't let some stubborn old man get in the way of
- 52:01your dream. And he says it in a way that clearly indicates what he's
- 52:06talking about is garb. He is not talking about Sonji's situation here. Stand
- 52:12up to him and tell him what you want. And Sonji says, it's
- 52:16a little more complicated than that. And this dude comes stumbling in at this
- 52:23point saying how he is starving? Can somebody please help him? And immediately
- 52:30Sonji goes into feed you mode. How does some corn fry corn bee fried
- 52:37rice sound? And you know, he's not supposed to be giving away food.
- 52:40He shouldn't be doing this, and Patty, who with the sus chef,
- 52:45is telling him, you're gonna get in trouble for this. It turns
- 52:49out later Zef is glad that Sonji did this, but at the moment it
- 52:54looks like the kind of thing he would get, you know, in even
- 52:59more trouble. And this dude is eating the food later and it's just like,
- 53:05this is unbelievable. This is so good. And I was drifting out
- 53:07there for a week, so you definitely saved my life. And Lufy is
- 53:14like, well, if this means that he's not only a great chef but
- 53:17a great guy, you should join my crew. And when he smiles,
- 53:24Lufy says, I'm not joking, I mean it. And when Sonji is
- 53:32like, nah, it's not for me, Lufy says, but you aren't
- 53:38happy here, and we need to have a good cook if we're going to
- 53:44find the one piece. I'm going to find it and become King of the
- 53:45Pirates. And I love this dude. We were searching for it too.
- 53:52I was part of a mighty pirate armada. Our captain was hell bent on
- 53:59finding gold rights treasure, but the grand line was his undoing. We lost
- 54:05fifty ships and five thousand men. I was the only survivor, So you
- 54:13guys, he says that he's the only I'm really really hoping this means Don
- 54:16Creek is actually dead, cause I don't know. I don't remember for sure,
- 54:21but I feel like he was with don Kreek in the anime and wandered
- 54:27over to the Barrati from don Kreeg's ship. I just really hope. Oh
- 54:31my god, I'm sorry. Michael is in the chat saying I love a
- 54:35little eggplant as a nickname because it's so cute and also offensive. I hadn't
- 54:38really thought about it in terms of like the emoji thing, but yikes,
- 54:43that is uh wow wow rough. So yeah, this guy says forget you
- 54:50ever heard of the one Piece? And of course Lufy has this expression like,
- 54:54well, that's not going to happen as usual. We go out to
- 55:00Oosup, who has gotten so drunk that he's dancing. Later on, he
- 55:05has like a whole thing where he's telling stories about the shit that they have
- 55:08gotten up to, and Nami is looking at him and just chatting with Zoro,
- 55:16and he sort of zeros in on the fact that her mood is about
- 55:22that she's got some kind of baggage, and they do one of those drinking
- 55:28games about how much do you think you know about me? How much looking
- 55:31at me? Do you think you could tell about how I grew up and
- 55:37the like, you know my background? And he gets it wrong right away,
- 55:44saying that she came from like a big city and that she's always been
- 55:46a schemer, YadA, YadA, YadA, And of course she's telling him
- 55:52like some truth, but as we know, there's a lot about this.
- 55:58She says, I bet you didn't have any friends as a kid, and
- 56:01she said I had friends, and she says, sorts don't count, and
- 56:07he says I had one friend and says drink and I was like, I
- 56:15don't know, I kind of feel like one friend that still counts, you
- 56:24know, so but yeah, he winds up drinking. Uh. So then
- 56:32we get I have to jump ahead here because I'm running out of so much
- 56:36time here but Lufy is talking to Zef tells him about Sanji feeding this guy.
- 56:44Zeph is very proud of him, and they get interrupted by us up
- 56:49coming in to be like, hey, we've got an issue here because Zorro
- 56:52has challenged one of the warlords to a fight, to a duel, which
- 57:00she accepted, and they want Lufy to convince Zoro not to do this.
- 57:05And I really really love when when he's trying to be like, maybe this
- 57:14isn't such a great idea, and Zora says, do you remember when I
- 57:16was tied up on that cross what I said to you? And Lufy says,
- 57:21what makes you think I want to play pirates? No? The other
- 57:23thing? I kill your kind for a living. No. Oh, you
- 57:30made a promise to somebody that you would be the greatest swordsman in the world,
- 57:37and beating this guy is the only way to do it. And Lufy
- 57:42is like, well, okay, then you know this is the we're in.
- 57:46This is my dream territory. There is absolutely no other language Lufy speaks,
- 57:52So as far as he is concerned, he's got to do that.
- 57:54I can't get in the way of it. And I had forgotten that Mihawk
- 58:00has this tiny little sword that he uses. It's I mean a sword,
- 58:05it's not even it's like a pairing knife. I mean, it is really
- 58:08so insulting. He says something about how like I don't use a cannon to
- 58:13fight rabbits. But yeah, when he sees loofy Meehawk is just like you
- 58:21really, I don't uh, I don't really get way. Well, they
- 58:24would send me for somebody, so you look small, But I do like
- 58:29your hat. It's a good line. So I don't this fight. I
- 58:37don't want to do a complete blow, blow by blow. But yeah,
- 58:44he pulls that knife out of the cross that's around his neck, and this
- 58:53results in obviously, as we all knows, or getting his complete ass kicked.
- 59:00Like it is no contest. He is doing his best, and he
- 59:06is taking this shit seriously. But even with that one little pairing knife,
- 59:12Mihawk is able to like throw him across the deck. And this just keeps
- 59:16happening over and over. Everything Zoro brings to the table, he uses about
- 59:22one percent of his energy to deflect it, and I the tiniest flick of
- 59:30his wrist, Zoro goes flying like one hundred feet. I mean, it's
- 59:35serious. And he says fighting is not all about strength, which, when
- 59:40you know now about hockey, I think that's what he's talking about here.
- 59:47So what ends up happening is that he stabs Zoro in the chest and Zoro
- 59:57doesn't back away, and he says, why aren't you retreating? And Zorro
- 1:00:04says, basically like, I can't give up on this. I like the
- 1:00:10yellow like double circle eyes. They look like targets almost is a weird,
- 1:00:17a weird effect. But yeah, he says I can't I or my dream
- 1:00:25will be lost forever. I don't feel like that's true. I feel like
- 1:00:30you just live to fight another day. And you go and challenge him when
- 1:00:34you've grown even further, you don't need to, like what And this is
- 1:00:38when you see this dude kind of saying, well, okay, you're brave.
- 1:00:42I guess I'll give you that. And he backs away instead and I'll
- 1:00:46do you the honor of killing you with Yoru and he pulls his giant fucking
- 1:00:52sword, which, as much as that sounds like a very snotty man,
- 1:00:58I do think that's an octual honor, Like that's for real, That's what
- 1:01:01we're talking about here, right, So this is when Zoro is like,
- 1:01:06Okay, now we're doing it, and he does the three sword style with
- 1:01:09the katana in his teeth, which looks as ridiculous in this as it ever.
- 1:01:15Has the goofiest damn technique I have ever heard of in my life.
- 1:01:20And he like combines the blades, spins, goes through and it's an interesting
- 1:01:30little moment where he is like kneeling as he slides through, and then all
- 1:01:36of a sudden, all the blades begin to fall. Not the one in
- 1:01:38his teeth, I don't think. I think that one's fine, but the
- 1:01:40blades of the other two katanas just begin to fall apart, and it's a
- 1:01:46really sudden thing. I liked this moment a lot, so Mihawk says,
- 1:01:52you're defeated. Why do you persist? And Zoro says, wounds on the
- 1:01:57back are a swordsman's greatest shame, and Meehawk says, I think he says
- 1:02:05exquisite if I'm not mistaken, but yeah, Zora just stands there with his
- 1:02:08arms out. He says, magnificent, that's what it is, slashes Zoro
- 1:02:14across the chest and Zoro goes down, and Meehawk says, let's see,
- 1:02:23Oh yeah, I forgot. Lufy tells him, I'm going to be King
- 1:02:25of the Pirates. King of the Pirates. That's a much more treacherous path
- 1:02:30and eating than even defeating me. And Lufy says, I don't care,
- 1:02:38It's what I'm going to do, and Mihawk gives him a look and sort
- 1:02:43of hmm, maybe you will. I like to think that he could see
- 1:02:49in Lufy the potential to handle hockey. And then he says to Zorro grows
- 1:02:57strong and come find me. I will be waiting and walks away, and
- 1:03:02Zorro is left there on the ground, just looking like he's on the verge
- 1:03:12of death, which I know he's not, but it is pretty grim.
- 1:03:16He says, if I forget, if I fail to become the world's greatest
- 1:03:20swordsman, you will be disappointed, right, And Lufy says, you could
- 1:03:25never fail me, and Soorro says, never again from now on until I
- 1:03:38beat him, and he pulls his weapon, the last one that he has
- 1:03:46left, and holds it up and says, I will never lose again.
- 1:03:52And I honestly can't recall. I feel like he does lose again, but
- 1:04:01ultimately I think he always manages to be victorious in the end, which I
- 1:04:06suppose is what actually counts. Anyway, he drops the weapon and goes unconscious
- 1:04:15and that's the end of the episode. And I was like, Wow,
- 1:04:18Okay, we don't even have soanjy in on this yet. Sorry, Michael
- 1:04:30says, I love this fight so much. My question is, does Mihawk
- 1:04:32have a medium sized sword other than the extremely tiny dagger and the giant body
- 1:04:39sized sword. That's a good question. Maybe he himself. All Right,
- 1:04:45everybody, I gotta wrap. Thank you all so much for listening. Hope
- 1:04:46you're enjoying the coverage. Thank you Michael for hanging out with me. And
- 1:04:50until next week to the loo, motherfuckers. That was an unspoiled network
