- 0:50Speaker 1: it's not and or we will be talking about that
- 0:53Speaker 1: in a few weeks, but we are going to be
- 0:56Speaker 1: discussing the brand new and animated series, the short mini
- 1:03Speaker 1: series as they've been doing Tales of the Underworld, and
- 1:08Speaker 1: of course with me as he is for every single
- 1:12Speaker 1: Star Wars episode in the six o two Club, and
- 1:15Speaker 1: of course my esteemed co host and fellow Jedi Master
- 1:22Speaker 1: John Mills.
- 1:23Speaker 3: Hello, Hello, Hello everybody, and hello Matt. I am tickled
- 1:29Speaker 3: that we get to discuss a new animated property, as
- 1:32Speaker 3: we both know, as I think everybody knows, the let's
- 1:37Speaker 3: be honest, the premiere storytelling of Star Wars has been
- 1:40Speaker 3: happening in animation and I'm looking forward to diving into
- 1:44Speaker 3: this and seeing you know what marks they hit and
- 1:49Speaker 3: where the conversation goes with what they explore.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I'm so looking forward to this. I love
- 1:57Speaker 1: when the animated stuff comes out, and I'm gonna throw
- 2:01Speaker 1: you a curveball before we get into the actual conversation,
- 2:06Speaker 1: but before we do any of that. Of course, with
- 2:08Speaker 1: the crossover, there are so many different places that you
- 2:12Speaker 1: can find us. So whichever feed you're listening to this in,
- 2:15Speaker 1: go to that podcast app of your choice and give
- 2:18Speaker 1: us a star rating and review. And even if you're

- 3:15Speaker 1: called the Babel Conference. You can join and talk to
- 3:17Speaker 1: listeners from all over the world, so lots of different
- 3:20Speaker 1: places that you could interact with us. John, and I
- 3:22Speaker 1: would love to hear you. Yes, I remember, we actually
- 3:25Speaker 1: do have an email there from aggressive negotiations, and I
- 3:30Speaker 1: promise we will get to that. It just you know,
- 3:33Speaker 1: we've had so much going on with new shows and everything,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and we have a big anniversary actually coming up for
- 3:40Speaker 1: our next show as we hit four hundred episodes, so
- 3:43Speaker 1: we've got a very special show.
- 3:45Speaker 4: For you there.
- 3:46Speaker 1: But John, the one thing that I wanted to ask you,
- 3:48Speaker 1: because you mentioned as we were going to get started
- 3:52Speaker 1: that you really like the animated material, and everybody knows
- 3:57Speaker 1: who listens to us, I as well do and of
- 4:01Speaker 1: course one of our good friends works on all of
- 4:04Speaker 1: this animated material. But we did get a wonderful surprise
- 4:09Speaker 1: at Star Wars celebration that mall shadow Lord is going
- 4:14Speaker 1: to be the next animated series. As we watch his
- 4:19Speaker 1: meteoric rise before the fall we see when you know,
- 4:25Speaker 1: we find him in Rebels. So I just had to
- 4:28Speaker 1: ask you, how are you feeling about the fact that
- 4:31Speaker 1: one we've got more animated material coming out, and two
- 4:35Speaker 1: we're going to fill in that story there for Darth Maul,
- 4:39Speaker 1: and three some of the people that we might actually
- 4:42Speaker 1: be able to run into with that story.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Honestly, just hearing an announcement of another animated series is
- 4:48Speaker 3: enough to fill me with joy, because I listen when
- 4:53Speaker 3: the announcement was being made, I was at work and
- 4:55Speaker 3: somebody shared a screen cap. I wasn't able to, like,
- 4:57Speaker 3: you know, keep up with the feed or anything like that,
- 4:59Speaker 3: and somebody just shared a screencap saying, Hey, this show
- 5:01Speaker 3: is coming. And my reaction was, this is now officially
- 5:06Speaker 3: the show I'm looking forward to most. It's actually probably
- 5:11Speaker 3: I know, brand me a heretic for it, but I'm
- 5:14Speaker 3: looking forward to it more than any of the movies
- 5:16Speaker 3: they've announced or any of the other projects that they have.
- 5:19Speaker 4: Going like.
- 5:22Speaker 3: Pound for pound, my love my reception of my however
- 5:32Speaker 3: you want to quantify it. When I encounter knew animated
- 5:35Speaker 3: material from Star Wars right now, I encounter it with
- 5:37Speaker 3: the same amount of glee as that kid who was
- 5:40Speaker 3: reading the Marvel Star Wars comics written by Archie Goodwin
- 5:44Speaker 3: back in the nineteen eighties. And actually that's a reference
- 5:48Speaker 3: not to mister Goodwin, but I will be bringing back
- 5:51Speaker 3: as we talk about Tales of the Underworld. But I mean, Matt,
- 5:54Speaker 3: I know you were super excited about Mall. Like we're
- 5:58Speaker 3: hitting more Mall. I mean like he's like he's a cockroach.
- 6:01Speaker 3: We've seen everything except the moment he was born at
- 6:05Speaker 3: this point, and I don't know if I want to
- 6:06Speaker 3: see that, but like it's it's pretty wild, man, it's
- 6:10Speaker 3: pretty wild. Like I'm I'm presuming you're excited about it too.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Oh, I mean absolutely one. Because this character that that
- 6:21Speaker 1: as we mentioned, we both really love, and of course,
- 6:25Speaker 1: I think, you know, we both really responded to everything
- 6:28Speaker 1: that they've done with the character since bringing him back,
- 6:31Speaker 1: and you know, the animated show really being the forefront
- 6:36Speaker 1: of that happening, and I'm so excited that, of course
- 6:41Speaker 1: that we're going to be exploring that more. You know,
- 6:45Speaker 1: I think what makes me so excited about this in
- 6:47Speaker 1: the part that I kind of alluded to, is that
- 6:50Speaker 1: I think that this really gives us an opportunity to
- 6:54Speaker 1: be able to focus on that storyline that I think
- 7:00Speaker 1: got basically abandoned when they didn't do anything else with solo, right,
- 7:07Speaker 1: And that is the stuff that I'm really excited to
- 7:10Speaker 1: see because I do expect us to kind of see
- 7:13Speaker 1: that character of Kira at some point in one of
- 7:18Speaker 1: the seasons of this show. There would I can't imagine
- 7:21Speaker 1: them not to have her appear, because she's actually a
- 7:26Speaker 1: part of that story right in that time period. And so,
- 7:30Speaker 1: but the other thing that makes me very excited about
- 7:34Speaker 1: this is is that, you know, all of the chatter
- 7:38Speaker 1: around this show as well, is that they are kind
- 7:42Speaker 1: of utilizing some ideas that George had for the sequels
- 7:47Speaker 1: in this which I find to be fascinated.
- 7:50Speaker 3: Couldn't make me happier, couldn't And well, yeah, well I
- 7:53Speaker 3: agree with you, Hey, it would be great to see
- 7:55Speaker 3: you know, Kira or any other character that I think.
- 7:59Speaker 3: Speak from my perspective, the level of trust that I
- 8:03Speaker 3: have with the people making animation at Star Wars is
- 8:08Speaker 3: it's the one project where I don't find myself game
- 8:11Speaker 3: playing like, oh what if this character shows up and
- 8:13Speaker 3: that character shows up. It's it's a level of trust
- 8:16Speaker 3: that I have where I'm like, whatever I get, yeah,
- 8:19Speaker 3: is yeah, probably going to be better than what I
- 8:21Speaker 3: could have thought of. So I'm not not even not
- 8:25Speaker 3: even you know, this is the team that gave us
- 8:28Speaker 3: the Clone Wars, the Bad Batch, the Tales of series, Like,
- 8:32Speaker 3: you know, come on now, like how much are you
- 8:36Speaker 3: how you know, how much more do they need to
- 8:38Speaker 3: prove themselves? Like it's seriously for me, they're blank check territory.
- 8:42Speaker 3: If they told me they were coming out with a
- 8:44Speaker 3: show about Suballba's childhood, I'd be like, all right, that
- 8:47Speaker 3: sounds good. Yeah, I'm fine.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I mean I would much rather be Kitster, you know,
- 8:54Speaker 1: and and his extence.
- 8:55Speaker 4: You know what it's throwing out for Kitster?
- 8:57Speaker 1: Just can can we just do tail the Tales of Kitster?
- 9:01Speaker 4: You know, you know, listen, don't tempt me.
- 9:04Speaker 3: That's something where you could explore, right, because he stays
- 9:07Speaker 3: with Shmi and then let's say something tragic happens with
- 9:10Speaker 3: Kitster after SMI gets purchased by Owen Lars, which is
- 9:15Speaker 3: not Owen sorry by Cleague Lars, because that's a really
- 9:19Speaker 3: weird way to find a wife, I guess, but you know,
- 9:22Speaker 3: like it's really you know, but that's what I'm saying
- 9:26Speaker 3: is like if the animation team said we're gonna do
- 9:29Speaker 3: Tales of Kitster, it's all right, cool, Sure, I'm gaming,
- 9:32Speaker 3: you're like soul yep.
- 9:33Speaker 4: Yeah, done and done.
- 9:34Speaker 1: No, I'm right there with you and so very excited
- 9:38Speaker 1: to see this show and we will be on the
- 9:42Speaker 1: edge of our seats honestly waiting to talk about it.
- 9:44Speaker 1: So but let's get to Tales of the Underworld. You know,
- 9:48Speaker 1: this one involves two different arcs, three episodes each, and
- 9:52Speaker 1: the first arc that we have is about as Sage Ventris,
- 9:56Speaker 1: who we had show up there in the Bad Batch yep.
- 10:03Speaker 1: And of course the question on everybody's mind was how
- 10:09Speaker 1: did she come back? Because you know, for all that
- 10:12Speaker 1: we knew the wonderful book by Christy Golden, which we
- 10:16Speaker 1: both covered and read and very much enjoyed, based off
- 10:21Speaker 1: of Unaired Clone War's arc, she died in a mission
- 10:27Speaker 1: with the Jedi and of course had fallen in love
- 10:31Speaker 1: with Quinlan Voss he had fallen in love with her,
- 10:34Speaker 1: and again, an excellent book, so if you haven't read it,
- 10:38Speaker 1: I highly encourage anybody to go read it. But the
- 10:41Speaker 1: question became like, oh my gosh, you know, are are
- 10:44Speaker 1: they over writing that canon? And one of the things
- 10:47Speaker 1: that I think it was Brad Row, who was the
- 10:51Speaker 1: supervising director there of the of the Bad Batch said,
- 10:57Speaker 1: you know, we're not overwriting that, but it's just not
- 11:01Speaker 1: our place to tell this story here in the Bad Batch,
- 11:05Speaker 1: that's not what we're going to tell that story. So
- 11:09Speaker 1: in the first episode here of the Assage Ventris arc
- 11:13Speaker 1: called a Way Forward, we actually start with the answer
- 11:17Speaker 1: to that question. So not only do we solidify the
- 11:21Speaker 1: canon of that book, which, as we've seen sometimes you know,
- 11:25Speaker 1: the animated series, right, they can kind of override books
- 11:30Speaker 1: that we've had, whether I mean Tales of the Jedi
- 11:34Speaker 1: in some ways, kind of overwrites the whole Ahsoka book
- 11:39Speaker 1: in many ways. And so here though, that doesn't happen.
- 11:43Speaker 1: And so I just wanted to ask you. We literally
- 11:46Speaker 1: start with Assage having died and being brought back to
- 11:51Speaker 1: Dathamir by Quinlan Voss and Obi Wan Kenobi. And so
- 11:58Speaker 1: what did you think of the way in which we
- 12:03Speaker 1: bring this character back to life?
- 12:06Speaker 4: Oh, it's completely fitting.
- 12:10Speaker 3: Again, animation doesn't shy away from the mysticism of Star Wars.
- 12:14Speaker 3: It doesn't try to explain it away or anything. It's
- 12:17Speaker 3: like the Night Sisters. Yeah, okay, this totally fits that.
- 12:20Speaker 3: You know that this pool and reviving her and all
- 12:22Speaker 3: that sort of you know, and even the dialogue with
- 12:25Speaker 3: the Spirit of Mother talsand and stuff like that, Like,
- 12:28Speaker 3: all of that works, All of that fits, and it's
- 12:32Speaker 3: a great reminder of again, a faction of Force users
- 12:37Speaker 3: who are neither Jedi nor Sith and they're you know,
- 12:41Speaker 3: they're they're just people who did their.
- 12:44Speaker 4: Thing sort of stuff. And I really I liked it.
- 12:50Speaker 4: I liked that it came back.
- 12:51Speaker 3: But what I really noticed from the very first frame
- 12:55Speaker 3: was we have another evolution in the animation. The way
- 13:01Speaker 3: that the characters moved, the way that the light was
- 13:04Speaker 3: smoothed out on the forms, the way that the curves,
- 13:07Speaker 3: you know, it was still the angular that we're used to,
- 13:13Speaker 3: but the curves were a little bit softer. The lighting
- 13:17Speaker 3: was very.
- 13:20Speaker 4: Stunning.
- 13:21Speaker 3: And that scene where quinnlan Voss lays her in the pool,
- 13:25Speaker 3: I swear it looks like a real body being put
- 13:28Speaker 3: in water, Like it just absolutely was stunning. What like
- 13:32Speaker 3: I And just that very beginning part is like, oh,
- 13:37Speaker 3: oh my gosh, wow, this is great.
- 13:38Speaker 4: What a declaration right here.
- 13:40Speaker 3: But yeah, in terms of how they bring her back,
- 13:41Speaker 3: I think it works perfectly well.
- 13:43Speaker 4: Spot on.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I think one of the things you mentioned there
- 13:48Speaker 1: was just the kind of look and feel of the
- 13:50Speaker 1: show and even that opening scene of pushing in on
- 13:55Speaker 1: the cave there in Datamir and the lighting choice, like
- 13:58Speaker 1: you said, it is just stunning. I mean it it
- 14:03Speaker 1: looks like the type of thing that you would see
- 14:08Speaker 1: in the work of somebody like a Frasier, you know,
- 14:13Speaker 1: you think of Larry Fong's best work, you know, a
- 14:16Speaker 1: dp on at the top of their game, you know.
- 14:20Speaker 1: And so that was wonderful, uh, you know, the shot
- 14:24Speaker 1: choices of you know, the the tear drop hitting her hand,
- 14:32Speaker 1: you know, and all of that is just wonderful and
- 14:36Speaker 1: and and and what I thought was really cool about
- 14:40Speaker 1: you know, going back to Dath and Mir now in retrospective,
- 14:44Speaker 1: having seen the first season of Ahsoka, where we know
- 14:48Speaker 1: that the witches actually come from a galaxy far far
- 14:53Speaker 1: away from this one, right, uh. And and so that
- 14:57Speaker 1: there and yet on that same planet that they're from,
- 15:02Speaker 1: we see one of the Mortise god statues. So there's
- 15:07Speaker 1: this whole interesting aspect to that. And we've already seen
- 15:12Speaker 1: you know, those gods be able to bring somebody back
- 15:15Speaker 1: to life in Ahsoka, right, And so the fact that
- 15:21Speaker 1: we've seen that we've also seen Darth Maul basically you know,
- 15:26Speaker 1: given legs, you know, had great legs created out of
- 15:29Speaker 1: magic and taking away his madness. And you know, it's
- 15:34Speaker 1: no surprise to me that massage of Interests could come
- 15:38Speaker 1: back this way. What I thought was really beautiful was
- 15:41Speaker 1: basically the Faustian type of deal though, that she has
- 15:46Speaker 1: to make in that, which is that if she wants
- 15:49Speaker 1: to come back, she can't have what her heart desires most,
- 15:53Speaker 1: which is Quinlan Voss. And I found that that really
- 15:59Speaker 1: interest that then she makes that choice to come back
- 16:03Speaker 1: because it seems like in so many ways, after that
- 16:08Speaker 1: experience of Dark Disciple, that would be the thing that
- 16:12Speaker 1: would make life worth living for her in many ways.
- 16:16Speaker 1: And so then the think it feels like to me,
- 16:21Speaker 1: the rest of this series with her, the rest of
- 16:24Speaker 1: this episode and then the other two episodes are almost
- 16:28Speaker 1: about her finding a purpose for a life reborn.
- 16:35Speaker 4: Yes, I think that.
- 16:40Speaker 3: That moment when she makes the deal is specifically interesting
- 16:45Speaker 3: because much like Faster anybody else who makes that Devil's bargain,
- 16:52Speaker 3: they're always thinking, oh, well, i'll figure out how to
- 16:55Speaker 3: beat the devil. I'll figure it out later. I'll just
- 16:58Speaker 3: agree to it now and I'll figure it out. And
- 17:00Speaker 3: I think there's that layer to it where she's thinking, yeah,
- 17:03Speaker 3: I agree, sure, sure, sure, without my heart's desire whatever,
- 17:08Speaker 3: and in the back of her mind, without it being
- 17:11Speaker 3: explicitly stated. I think you can clearly tell she's like,
- 17:15Speaker 3: I'll worry about that when I worry about that when
- 17:17Speaker 3: I get there. And I think that she then has
- 17:21Speaker 3: the realization over time of they weren't kidding and so yes,
- 17:29Speaker 3: you know, to your point, I have to find another
- 17:31Speaker 3: reason to live. I think that there's you know this,
- 17:37Speaker 3: and this will come back when we you know, talk
- 17:39Speaker 3: about the.
- 17:40Speaker 4: Cad Bane arc.
- 17:41Speaker 3: But I think the beauty, one of the beauties of
- 17:44Speaker 3: this arc is that there is a lot of stuff unspoken.
- 17:48Speaker 3: There's a lot of stuff that is leaning into As
- 17:52Speaker 3: George Lucas as everyone loves to say, both lovingly and mockingly.
- 17:56Speaker 3: Film is a visual medium, and so there's a lot
- 17:59Speaker 3: that I think plays on Ventureance's face and reactions that
- 18:07Speaker 3: gives those cues, gives those hints to I'll agree to
- 18:12Speaker 3: this deal, but I'll figure a way through it. And
- 18:15Speaker 3: then when we meet her again, she's realized, oh, well,
- 18:19Speaker 3: I'm not going to be able to make the deal anymore,
- 18:25Speaker 3: or be able to beat the deal, I should say,
- 18:27Speaker 3: but I think that what's super interesting is that when
- 18:33Speaker 3: we do see her, when we see her move to
- 18:39Speaker 3: rescue a Jedi, it's a really interesting world building moment
- 18:46Speaker 3: because you see again the idea of how your fellow
- 18:49Speaker 3: citizen will sell you out in a heartbeat, and you
- 18:53Speaker 3: also see her change of heart. This is a character where,
- 18:57Speaker 3: let's say, this is even the first time you encounter her,
- 19:00Speaker 3: she's brought back to life by dark magic. She has
- 19:03Speaker 3: a tie to these dark siders. But when we see
- 19:07Speaker 3: her out in the world afterward, she's committing an act
- 19:13Speaker 3: of great compassion and charity. And you know, I think
- 19:18Speaker 3: that's beautiful. Like, you see a whole lot of growth
- 19:22Speaker 3: in the character just within a couple of minutes. With
- 19:26Speaker 3: the way they advance the story, I think that's beautiful.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I agree with you. I think that's
- 19:33Speaker 1: the one of the interesting parts about this, especially in
- 19:35Speaker 1: light of the book Dark Disciple, because you know, we
- 19:38Speaker 1: know that she died to give her life for Quinlan
- 19:42Speaker 1: Voss basically, and so she is not a verse to
- 19:48Speaker 1: doing that now, and yet her whole goal right now
- 19:54Speaker 1: at least is she comes back and she's on this
- 19:57Speaker 1: planet just working to curity for a shuttle service. She
- 20:04Speaker 1: wants a quiet life, which in some ways makes complete
- 20:07Speaker 1: sense after the life she had lived in the Clone Wars,
- 20:11Speaker 1: and you know what she had been put through with
- 20:14Speaker 1: Dooku as her master. And so I love that aspect
- 20:20Speaker 1: there of where she doesn't really even question the moment
- 20:25Speaker 1: she realizes that he's a Jedi and they open the
- 20:30Speaker 1: door and there's all of these stormtroopers out there, she
- 20:33Speaker 1: immediately shuts the door and and just goes into action
- 20:39Speaker 1: in some ways the same way that any other actual
- 20:42Speaker 1: Jedi would do, right, And so's it's a wonderful moment
- 20:48Speaker 1: of allowing us to kind of, I think, get a
- 20:53Speaker 1: real picture of who this character has become in her rebirth.
- 20:58Speaker 1: And yet at the same time, she's still very venturous
- 21:02Speaker 1: about the whole thing, right, you know, she's still pretending
- 21:06Speaker 1: in some ways and maybe not completely pretending to just
- 21:09Speaker 1: to be put upon, you know that, oh my gosh,
- 21:12Speaker 1: I got to take care of somebody else, and will
- 21:13Speaker 1: you just shut up? And you know what I love
- 21:17Speaker 1: about that is that even though she's a character who
- 21:20Speaker 1: has kind of moved past the life of complete selfishness
- 21:25Speaker 1: and has moved more towards the life of selflessness. She's
- 21:29Speaker 1: not happy about it, right, Like it's not it's not
- 21:33Speaker 1: like her her favorite thing. She's not obi wan kenobi
- 21:37Speaker 1: about it. And and I really appreciate that that we
- 21:42Speaker 1: don't actually lose all she is as a character. But
- 21:46Speaker 1: there has been that monumental shift of who she is
- 21:50Speaker 1: as a character, which is when she sees somebody in need,
- 21:55Speaker 1: she can't help herself now. And I kind of love at.
- 22:02Speaker 4: Yeah. I think that.
- 22:05Speaker 3: The the neatest part though of of this, you know
- 22:10Speaker 3: her our first encounter with her, I mean, not the
- 22:13Speaker 3: neatest like it. But it's another neat part is I
- 22:17Speaker 3: realized something suddenly with the inquisitors. Uh when it comes
- 22:22Speaker 3: to this is with ah Soca and now with Venturess
- 22:29Speaker 3: and with others. The inquisitors against actual seasoned force users
- 22:38Speaker 3: are nothing like. It adds a whole layer to venturous dispatching.
- 22:45Speaker 3: The inquisitor shows what it's shown.
- 22:50Speaker 1: I mean, she does get her button handed, but if
- 22:54Speaker 1: he hadn't been there, but.
- 22:57Speaker 3: What But what I'm what I'm saying is that these inquisitors,
- 23:02Speaker 3: Vader doesn't fail at this mission. Oh right, absolutely, you
- 23:07Speaker 3: know somebody who's a true you know, you know, disciple
- 23:14Speaker 3: of the dark Side sort of thing. You suddenly realize
- 23:18Speaker 3: how the Inquisitors really are just cannon fodder where it's like, okay,
- 23:23Speaker 3: they'll go get them, and then it's Vader shows up
- 23:25Speaker 3: when it's it plays into Rebels if anything, where it's like, okay,
- 23:29Speaker 3: Vader shows up. Why because the Grand Inquisitor couldn't get
- 23:32Speaker 3: the job done. Even he couldn't get that job done.
- 23:34Speaker 3: All right, fine, I'll show up and I'll do it.
- 23:38Speaker 4: But there's a.
- 23:41Speaker 3: There's a beauty to that as well, seeing her fight
- 23:46Speaker 3: against somebody that is, you know, ostensibly would have been
- 23:50Speaker 3: on her side sort of thing. I think that's beautiful
- 23:53Speaker 3: and I think it actually probably the most beautiful shot
- 23:58Speaker 3: in the first episode, you know, when when they're when
- 24:03Speaker 3: they're running and they get to that docking bay, is
- 24:08Speaker 3: that it's that far shot where the Inquisitors on screen
- 24:12Speaker 3: right and she's on screen left and they've got their
- 24:14Speaker 3: their sabers lit. It's so evocative of the shot when
- 24:21Speaker 3: mal and Obi Wan are about to face each other
- 24:25Speaker 3: uh In in that episode of Rebels. I know, I
- 24:28Speaker 3: keep sort of like rambling about this stuff.
- 24:30Speaker 4: But it's like.
- 24:32Speaker 3: Venturos now is a character that we have seen pretty
- 24:38Speaker 3: much every stage of her life, and it's pretty interesting
- 24:43Speaker 3: to see her growth. She really is and we've talked
- 24:46Speaker 3: about this, you know, in other conversations, but she really
- 24:49Speaker 3: is this dark mirror of Ahsoka, and it's like it's
- 24:53Speaker 3: one of those things where it's it's such a beautiful
- 24:55Speaker 3: thing to know that we've seen so much of their
- 24:57Speaker 3: arcs and we see how they are both let down
- 25:02Speaker 3: by the people who they trusted most and that, but
- 25:06Speaker 3: then they both go off and essentially become Ronan. Yeah,
- 25:11Speaker 3: in two different ways. Uh yeah, I just think it's
- 25:15Speaker 3: really fascinating.
- 25:17Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, and I think the the other really
- 25:20Speaker 1: interesting part of that that I really like is the
- 25:24Speaker 1: way in which ah Sosca and Venturs kind of slowly
- 25:31Speaker 1: moving kind of closer and closer together as in who
- 25:35Speaker 1: they are, right, there's still very much themselves, but there
- 25:39Speaker 1: there is a sense where that's kind of happening, which
- 25:42Speaker 1: is is interesting and and and in fact too, you know,
- 25:47Speaker 1: even kind of see with season one of Ahsoka, you know,
- 25:52Speaker 1: her being in a place where because of all of
- 25:55Speaker 1: her experiences, you know she is, and especially then her
- 26:00Speaker 1: experience with Sapeine, you know, she's much less sure of
- 26:04Speaker 1: herself than we had seen before, you know. And what's
- 26:08Speaker 1: interesting is is watching this story with Assage, where you know,
- 26:13Speaker 1: by the end of her arc, she seems to almost
- 26:16Speaker 1: be much more sure of herself than she is at
- 26:19Speaker 1: the beginning, And that's part of that work of rebirth,
- 26:24Speaker 1: which I think is really interesting and I love to
- 26:28Speaker 1: you know, one of the things we talk about many
- 26:29Speaker 1: times is that the way in which the animation helps
- 26:32Speaker 1: tie together all of Star Wars, right, it becomes kind
- 26:37Speaker 1: of the glue that really fits all the pieces together.
- 26:40Speaker 1: And this connects very well then with what we saw
- 26:43Speaker 1: in the Obi Wan series and the fact that there
- 26:46Speaker 1: is this Jedi path, right, and we saw Quentland Voss's
- 26:50Speaker 1: name on the wall in the Obi Wan Kenobi show,
- 26:54Speaker 1: and now we have that again, the fact that there
- 26:58Speaker 1: are there is this Jedi underground happening. And I liked
- 27:03Speaker 1: that connection, and I loved the way in which, you know,
- 27:08Speaker 1: that piece kind of drives Ventress even further into helping
- 27:13Speaker 1: Lego here at the beginning, and at the same time,
- 27:19Speaker 1: you know, she actually comes clean with him to say Hey,
- 27:24Speaker 1: I wasn't on your side. I was not a Jedi,
- 27:28Speaker 1: and I probably killed a lot of people you knew personally,
- 27:33Speaker 1: and that's an interesting choice as well. So I mean
- 27:37Speaker 1: this again, this first episode just has so much that's
- 27:40Speaker 1: kind of happening in it, and it's amazing that, you know,
- 27:45Speaker 1: it's like sixteen minutes long.
- 27:48Speaker 4: I love that.
- 27:49Speaker 3: When we bound into the second episode, and this is
- 27:52Speaker 3: where I'm going to heap praise. I made reference to
- 27:54Speaker 3: the Marvel comics before. What I find great about Ventresses
- 28:00Speaker 3: arc is pre Archie Goodwin. It was Howard Chaikin that
- 28:05Speaker 3: worked on the Marvel Star Wars comics.
- 28:07Speaker 4: He worked on the adaptation, and then he uh.
- 28:12Speaker 3: Oh Chakin was the artist who was the somebody. Somebody
- 28:15Speaker 3: out there as old as I am is flipping out
- 28:18Speaker 3: because I might have mixed up the names here anyway,
- 28:22Speaker 3: I'll look that up in a second. But the first
- 28:26Speaker 3: run of Star Wars comics post adaptation of the original film.
- 28:31Speaker 3: The highest praise I can give this venturous arc is
- 28:34Speaker 3: that is evocative of those adventures that I read as
- 28:40Speaker 3: a kid that were so wild and imaginative and strange
- 28:44Speaker 3: but still felt part of the universe. It's where we
- 28:49Speaker 3: you know, that arc I'm talking about is where we
- 28:51Speaker 3: first encountered Jackson the Big Green Rabbit who later came
- 28:58Speaker 3: back through you know, hipster call outs and resurrections in
- 29:01Speaker 3: the comics and everything like that. But like, you know,
- 29:07Speaker 3: this is this our captures so much of that Gopher broke,
- 29:14Speaker 3: Star Wars verve that was there in the late seventies
- 29:19Speaker 3: and early eighties when there were no rules. This feels
- 29:23Speaker 3: like there are no rules, even though we know there
- 29:26Speaker 3: are rules. You know, it's much more. There are many
- 29:29Speaker 3: more guidelines and stories for it to navigate in, but
- 29:33Speaker 3: it still has that same freshness to it that those
- 29:36Speaker 3: original stories did.
- 29:39Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean the second part called friends. I really
- 29:45Speaker 1: enjoy the fact that we bring in Lats from the
- 29:50Speaker 1: bounty hunting arc that Ventures was a part of, and
- 29:54Speaker 1: realizing that we can kind of deal in some ways
- 29:58Speaker 1: with that relationship that she had previously, uh, and kind
- 30:02Speaker 1: of get the justtaposition of you know, who Ventures used
- 30:06Speaker 1: to be and who she is now with Lats, you know,
- 30:10Speaker 1: who hasn't changed at all. Uh, and of course Ventriss,
- 30:13Speaker 1: who has come very far from where she was previously.
- 30:17Speaker 1: And and so I love that and I just love
- 30:21Speaker 1: the the kind of inventiveness of setting this on a
- 30:26Speaker 1: mission to go pick up an Imperial star destroyer shield
- 30:33Speaker 1: relay from one of the Flecktor domes, and you're on
- 30:37Speaker 1: this planet where they're building all these new ships for
- 30:42Speaker 1: the Empire because we're still early enough where the Venitor
- 30:46Speaker 1: would still have been the main ship, and so they're
- 30:51Speaker 1: creating all these star destroyers, and so there's just to me,
- 30:55Speaker 1: that's the place that I really loved that. But it's
- 31:01Speaker 1: interesting the way in which we actually kind of shift
- 31:06Speaker 1: the focus in this episode. It's as much about Leko
- 31:13Speaker 1: and his decision do I trust ventures with what I
- 31:16Speaker 1: know about her or do I trust somebody else and
- 31:21Speaker 1: realizing that the world he's in now, trust is not
- 31:28Speaker 1: going to come easy. And I love that because it's
- 31:34Speaker 1: teaching him obviously an incredibly valuable lesson if he wants
- 31:37Speaker 1: to survive. But two again, it's driving home the thematic
- 31:45Speaker 1: element of who is Ventuss going to choose to be
- 31:49Speaker 1: in her new life and who she chooses to be,
- 31:54Speaker 1: especially even just by the end of this episode, is
- 31:57Speaker 1: somebody who is trustworthy to a person like Leko, which
- 32:03Speaker 1: I loved.
- 32:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I yes, everything you're saying Also, as a side note,
- 32:11Speaker 3: I did look it up while you were talking. Howard
- 32:13Speaker 3: Chaikin was a co writer, but it was the main
- 32:17Speaker 3: driver on the writing for the first stretch was Roy
- 32:21Speaker 3: Thomas Chiken was the artist, but I was only partially confused.
- 32:27Speaker 3: But yeah, reuniting with with characters from that Clone Wars arc,
- 32:32Speaker 3: especially since I'm doing that Clone Wars rewatch with with
- 32:37Speaker 3: my well, I mean first time watch with one of
- 32:39Speaker 3: my daughters and you know rewatch for me obviously, seeing
- 32:44Speaker 3: those characters come back so soon after I had rewatched
- 32:46Speaker 3: that episode, that was a special delight for me because
- 32:50Speaker 3: I was like, oh, yeah, I just saw them. And
- 32:53Speaker 3: it speaks to your point, because that is something that
- 32:55Speaker 3: Star Wars keeps coming back to, is who's able to
- 32:59Speaker 3: change it who was not? And so having Venturess encounter
- 33:04Speaker 3: people who could not change is throws into stark relief
- 33:09Speaker 3: again how much she has, how much she's grown.
- 33:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and it's interesting to me because this this moves
- 33:22Speaker 1: along the story. But this really is kind of the
- 33:25Speaker 1: middle episode to be the connective tissue of the entire thing,
- 33:31Speaker 1: because the true lessons and the really interesting kind of
- 33:37Speaker 1: dynamics of really kind of forcing Venturess to make the
- 33:43Speaker 1: decisions of one who is she going to be? Is
- 33:47Speaker 1: she going to try and break the a deal that
- 33:51Speaker 1: she made to come back to life by trying to
- 33:54Speaker 1: find Quinlan Voss and all of that come to a
- 33:58Speaker 1: head in One Warrior to Another when she actually runs
- 34:02Speaker 1: into somebody who not only knows who she used to be,
- 34:05Speaker 1: but basically revers her for who she used to be.
- 34:12Speaker 1: And so the choice then that she has to make
- 34:16Speaker 1: on whether to just trust what he has to say
- 34:20Speaker 1: or to trust this person she just met who's also
- 34:23Speaker 1: a Jedi, was an incredible juxtaposition there for the character
- 34:29Speaker 1: to be placed in the middle of. And what I
- 34:33Speaker 1: love about that is how quickly it allows the character
- 34:41Speaker 1: to be forced to make that decision. Okay, again, life
- 34:46Speaker 1: comes down to the choices we make, So who am
- 34:50Speaker 1: I going to choose to be in this situation? And
- 34:54Speaker 1: you know, it's one of those things where I think
- 34:56Speaker 1: they just do a really good job of doing that.
- 35:00Speaker 1: And the beauty that is using this kid right, you know,
- 35:04Speaker 1: out of the mouth of babes Lecho living the life
- 35:11Speaker 1: of the Jedi and and the true lessons of the
- 35:18Speaker 1: Jedi in such a wonderful way there reinforce. Then who
- 35:25Speaker 1: she is going to choose to be?
- 35:27Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I mean I don't know how much I
- 35:32Speaker 3: can add to that except that just the beauty of
- 35:34Speaker 3: one the title of the episode being one warrior to another,
- 35:39Speaker 3: somebody in there as a star Trek six fan.
- 35:42Speaker 1: Yes they are, That's all I could think.
- 35:44Speaker 4: I saw that.
- 35:45Speaker 3: I was like general Chang reference, well done. And also,
- 35:50Speaker 3: you know, just songs we're going through. I hear where
- 35:56Speaker 3: the inspiration for the music were tempt from Indiana Jones
- 36:02Speaker 3: and the Last Crusade here and there, which is cool.
- 36:05Speaker 3: I get you, I hear you, I recognize it.
- 36:09Speaker 4: But also I think again getting to the beauty of.
- 36:17Speaker 3: The story is you know, people can change, that there
- 36:26Speaker 3: is space and room to grow, no matter how scared
- 36:30Speaker 3: you are about it. And the fact that we see
- 36:33Speaker 3: an echo that we can then pick up on and
- 36:36Speaker 3: apply forward to for instance, the sand people on Tatoine,
- 36:42Speaker 3: where that's just sort of legacy animosity between them and
- 36:46Speaker 3: settlers and stuff like that, and then we see that
- 36:49Speaker 3: growth into the Mandalorian and we realize it's all based
- 36:53Speaker 3: on misunderstanding and not wanting to to give up the
- 37:02Speaker 3: fight as it were. And I think that it's a
- 37:07Speaker 3: it's a beautiful thing and just but that moment where
- 37:11Speaker 3: she counsels the old man, you know about about changing
- 37:17Speaker 3: and embracing and listening. Man, you know, there's there's a
- 37:22Speaker 3: lesson there that like this is, this is true Star
- 37:25Speaker 3: Wars at its core is it's got a lesson that
- 37:28Speaker 3: you and I can hear and understand. But it's a
- 37:32Speaker 3: lesson the kids need to hear too. You can't hold
- 37:36Speaker 3: on to being mad. You gotta let it go at
- 37:38Speaker 3: some point and you gotta you gotta work through it.
- 37:42Speaker 3: You gotta, you know, because that's and you've got to
- 37:44Speaker 3: learn to be self less instead of selfish. You can't
- 37:49Speaker 3: say no, I'm not going to talk to them because
- 37:51Speaker 3: I want Well you have to consider what what everybody
- 37:55Speaker 3: wants and needs.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean, you know, like you said, it
- 37:59Speaker 1: come down to the whole choice of can you change?
- 38:04Speaker 1: You know, can you see things the way they are?
- 38:06Speaker 1: Are you going to be caught in a loop?
- 38:09Speaker 4: You know?
- 38:10Speaker 1: And you know that this self perpetuating loop that of
- 38:15Speaker 1: you see everything and again you know, the grandfather of
- 38:20Speaker 1: the story sees everything in the with the veneer of
- 38:26Speaker 1: war over it right that it's like he's wearing the
- 38:30Speaker 1: war glasses and he can't see anything except outside that
- 38:34Speaker 1: view yep, and so Ventus has to remind him, no,
- 38:38Speaker 1: you're not actually at war. You're literally just living on
- 38:41Speaker 1: a planet and you're supposed to be a farmer. And
- 38:44Speaker 1: these raiders quote unquote, they're just protecting what's theirs because
- 38:51Speaker 1: you've been attacking them and stealing their water, you know.
- 38:54Speaker 1: And so gotta love that the fact that the raiders
- 38:59Speaker 1: are very mad Max vibe well done. Yes, I thought
- 39:03Speaker 1: that was very fun. Of course mad Max in the
- 39:07Speaker 1: sense that they're like, you know, two feet tall.
- 39:09Speaker 3: Oh. But see, the thing is, I actually thought that
- 39:12Speaker 3: was great because that's a classic Star Wars sort of
- 39:14Speaker 3: thing too. It's very you know, just like it's just
- 39:17Speaker 3: it's you recognize it, but it's not quite real world.
- 39:21Speaker 4: It's just a little bit off.
- 39:22Speaker 1: Yeah. I wanted to ask you though that at the end,
- 39:27Speaker 1: you know, they find the path, Leco can go off
- 39:32Speaker 1: on the ship, and yet he chooses to stay with
- 39:34Speaker 1: Venturous and they basically kind of right off into the sunset,
- 39:38Speaker 1: you know, Last Crusade style. I mean, it feels like
- 39:46Speaker 1: to me that if we never saw Ventures again, it
- 39:50Speaker 1: would be a complete disservice to this character, especially with
- 39:54Speaker 1: the fact that we see her in the future in
- 40:00Speaker 1: the bad Batch and it feels like there's a lot
- 40:05Speaker 1: of story that happens to her. Yep, when she meets Omega,
- 40:11Speaker 1: you know, and we also know, you know, Omega goes
- 40:16Speaker 1: off to join the rebellion on Yavin, and so there's
- 40:22Speaker 1: just it just really does feel like there's an incredible
- 40:26Speaker 1: amount of story here that that it would be a
- 40:29Speaker 1: travesty if they never fill in.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, don't have anything to add to that. Absolutely,
- 40:38Speaker 3: I would love to see a venture series. I'd love
- 40:41Speaker 3: to see even if it's one season. I'd love to
- 40:43Speaker 3: see it. Just take take me with her. I mean,
- 40:47Speaker 3: we already know that she's solo by the time bad
- 40:50Speaker 3: Batch shows up, or at least I'm presuming she is.
- 40:54Speaker 4: So well, give me that story.
- 40:56Speaker 3: What happened? Why was it something tragic? Was it simply
- 41:01Speaker 3: growing and saying, okay, we got to go our separate ways?
- 41:03Speaker 3: Did somebody else join the rebellion? You know, like that
- 41:08Speaker 3: sort of thing. So I think that would be that'd
- 41:11Speaker 3: be great.
- 41:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I agree, you know, if we don't get any
- 41:19Speaker 1: more venturous, it'll be very sad, and it's obviously left
- 41:23Speaker 1: wide open for that to happen. And yeah, man, would
- 41:29Speaker 1: it be crazy if Adventures shows up in Ahsoka season two.
- 41:34Speaker 3: I think the odds against that are very high, but
- 41:38Speaker 3: I would love it. It would be great, It'd be great.
- 41:43Speaker 1: Yeah, Well, we have a whole other arc with the
- 41:47Speaker 1: with cad Bane, and basically this is cad Bane's origin
- 41:52Speaker 1: story of where he comes from and you know what
- 41:57Speaker 1: makes him tick, and you know, so that first episode
- 42:01Speaker 1: The Good Life is all about his introduction to a
- 42:08Speaker 1: life of crime, and it feels like it takes place
- 42:16Speaker 1: in Brooklyn and or a planet that looks very much
- 42:21Speaker 1: like Brooklyn with its store shops and it's overhead trains.
- 42:27Speaker 1: I just expected Spider Man to be swinging by at
- 42:30Speaker 1: any point. And and and really this does have that
- 42:38Speaker 1: mob stir, gangster style type of movie feel to it
- 42:45Speaker 1: with the story that we're telling about how these two
- 42:49Speaker 1: young orphans kind of get caught up in the life
- 42:54Speaker 1: of crime but then end up going different ways.
- 43:00Speaker 3: It's hard for me to talk about this one episode
- 43:04Speaker 3: at a time.
- 43:06Speaker 4: Yeah, we don't have to know. I'm not I'm not.
- 43:08Speaker 3: I'm not advocating to go one episode at a time,
- 43:12Speaker 3: I want to say that as much as I love
- 43:15Speaker 3: the venturous arc, I've made no secret of the fact
- 43:19Speaker 3: that cad Bane is one of my favorite Star Wars characters.
- 43:22Speaker 3: He's He's definitely a top ten, if not a top five.
- 43:26Speaker 3: Like I I love the character encountering him as a
- 43:31Speaker 3: child and going forward and seeing that echo again of
- 43:39Speaker 3: the lesson that Star Wars was constructed to teach, which is,
- 43:45Speaker 3: you can be selfish or you can be self less,
- 43:48Speaker 3: and life is going to be better if yourself less.
- 43:52Speaker 3: And the fact is that this is some of the
- 43:57Speaker 3: most beautiful animation works I've ever seen, and it's some
- 44:03Speaker 3: of the most low key beautiful writing I've seen on television.
- 44:13Speaker 4: Recently.
- 44:15Speaker 3: There is exactly the right balance between what is said
- 44:18Speaker 3: and what is not said, and there are moments that
- 44:22Speaker 3: are truly beautiful. And again, if you want to talk
- 44:25Speaker 3: about Indiana, Jones references bringing it back to just talking
- 44:28Speaker 3: about the first episode, meeting the man with the hat
- 44:33Speaker 3: that's going to influence the course you take with your life. Again,
- 44:38Speaker 3: I think that's a beautiful, beautiful thing because it gives
- 44:42Speaker 3: me that little chuckle of how that's how it went
- 44:45Speaker 3: for Indiana Jones as well. He meets the man with
- 44:48Speaker 3: the hat that you know, eventually the you know, the
- 44:53Speaker 3: mantle is taken up by him when he puts on
- 44:58Speaker 3: the hat, and you know, just sticking with that first episode,
- 45:06Speaker 3: what's beautiful and then it extends through the rest is
- 45:09Speaker 3: they do such a good job of establishing the world
- 45:16Speaker 3: that these kids know that it is the shopkeepers and
- 45:22Speaker 3: the strange rooms in the back and the people doing things,
- 45:27Speaker 3: and it's simply life. It's not nobody's having profound discussions
- 45:32Speaker 3: about what's going on. These two street kids are simply
- 45:38Speaker 3: trying to survive and they just want to have candy
- 45:44Speaker 3: and sugar and fun and the stuff that any kid deserves.
- 45:49Speaker 3: Like you look at it and it's so tragic in
- 45:52Speaker 3: this beginning because it's like, oh wow, these kids don't
- 45:57Speaker 3: have parents, and they don't have love, and they don't
- 46:00Speaker 3: have anything but each other and theft, and it's like
- 46:06Speaker 3: that's so heartbreaking. It's so like I knew I was
- 46:10Speaker 3: in trouble emotionally meeting cad Bane like this because it's
- 46:18Speaker 3: done so particularly well, and it smashes open because cad Bain,
- 46:26Speaker 3: remember that very first time you meet him at the end,
- 46:29Speaker 3: of Season one of the Clone Wars. He's already that
- 46:33Speaker 3: you know, super bad mamagamma Clint Eastwood type, you know,
- 46:39Speaker 3: the Gunslinger, super cool thought of all the angle sort
- 46:43Speaker 3: of stuff. And then just like the Anakin to see oh,
- 46:50Speaker 3: he started life as a child too, and it wasn't
- 46:54Speaker 3: until he had to make a series of decisions that
- 46:57Speaker 3: he turned out the way that he was when I
- 47:00Speaker 3: first saw him, Like, that's you know, the fact that
- 47:04Speaker 3: cad Bane got this treatment was both a beautiful thing
- 47:08Speaker 3: that I didn't deserve and a dirty trick that I
- 47:11Speaker 3: hate them for because now whenever I see Him'm gonna
- 47:14Speaker 3: be like, oh, that poor kid, look at what happened
- 47:16Speaker 3: to him.
- 47:20Speaker 1: This is going to be an interesting conversation because I
- 47:24Speaker 1: like the cad Bane episodes, but I think they are lacking.
- 47:29Speaker 1: And a big part of that is that while watching them,
- 47:33Speaker 1: I felt like they were making you inference too much.
- 47:40Speaker 1: Because you and I and many others, especially adults right
- 47:48Speaker 1: that love film, you will know all of the things
- 47:53Speaker 1: they're pulling from that give this story meaning for what
- 47:58Speaker 1: these kids are experiencing the life of crime. Thing the
- 48:02Speaker 1: mobster movies. We've watched the Gangster movies we've watched, and
- 48:10Speaker 1: I did not feel like ever in this, this this arc,
- 48:15Speaker 1: that they did enough to legitimize the choices that Bain makes,
- 48:24Speaker 1: especially by the end, I felt like they were just
- 48:30Speaker 1: there was too many places where I needed just a
- 48:34Speaker 1: little bit more about why Bain is so gung ho
- 48:41Speaker 1: to make the choices that he's willing to make. I
- 48:44Speaker 1: feel like there's just not enough. It's not as polished
- 48:50Speaker 1: as it needs to be. And and I will say this,
- 48:54Speaker 1: it's not what I is not. It's not as polished
- 48:58Speaker 1: as I expect, especially in light of the Venturous Arc
- 49:02Speaker 1: or any of the work that they've done in the
- 49:05Speaker 1: Tales of series, whether it's been Empire or Jedi, and
- 49:09Speaker 1: of course you know what we've seen in the Clone
- 49:11Speaker 1: Wars by the end of it, bad Batch, I just
- 49:16Speaker 1: expect a higher bar to be reached in that and
- 49:21Speaker 1: this one. Now hear me say this, I'm not saying
- 49:25Speaker 1: this is bad at all. I still like it. I
- 49:28Speaker 1: still think it's good, but it doesn't reach the level
- 49:31Speaker 1: that I expect this Tales of series to reach in
- 49:36Speaker 1: the sense of like greatness. This one just leaves me
- 49:41Speaker 1: a little bit cold. And that is frustrating for me because,
- 49:46Speaker 1: like you, Cad Baine is my favorite bounty hunter in
- 49:49Speaker 1: Star Wars. You know, when it comes to like you're
- 49:51Speaker 1: picking your different characters in like bounty Hunter or you know,
- 49:55Speaker 1: for the Empire or Jedi or you know, Smuggler, all
- 50:00Speaker 1: these kind of things, it's like, you know, you can
- 50:01Speaker 1: have your favorites, and cat Bane's my favorite. And there's
- 50:08Speaker 1: just a little bit something to put it in the
- 50:14Speaker 1: phrase of a John Mayer song, something's missing from this
- 50:18Speaker 1: arc for me, and.
- 50:19Speaker 3: That okay, let me start my diatribe about all the
- 50:24Speaker 3: ways that you are wrong.
- 50:26Speaker 4: But that's okay.
- 50:29Speaker 3: I'll offer this as a counterpoint one. I don't see
- 50:36Speaker 3: the deficiencies, but taking your argument and breaking it down,
- 50:42Speaker 3: I get what you're saying. It's not that I don't
- 50:44Speaker 3: understand what you're saying. I'm saying that the construction of
- 50:49Speaker 3: the arc is, in my estimation perfect, because like the
- 51:00Speaker 3: the prequels, when Lucas was completely by the time he
- 51:03Speaker 3: was completely comfortable telling it. You know, the way it's
- 51:08Speaker 3: been compared before by myself, by others, by you as
- 51:11Speaker 3: you know, blah blah blah, is it's like jazz. They're
- 51:15Speaker 3: playing the important notes. So the important notes are seeing
- 51:19Speaker 3: him being taken in and that first decision of abandoning
- 51:23Speaker 3: his friend, and then the second decision of you know,
- 51:29Speaker 3: seeking revenge, and that third decision of seeking revenge again.
- 51:34Speaker 3: And the fact that he consciously walks away from his
- 51:38Speaker 3: own son at the end of it, like and the fact.
- 51:43Speaker 1: That the the.
- 51:46Speaker 3: Storytellers have the restraint, the restraint not to have his
- 51:54Speaker 3: friend expressly say, but Cad, he's your son. Like the
- 52:00Speaker 3: fact that it's left unspoken because you realize that his friend,
- 52:04Speaker 3: who has raised the boy as his son, is not
- 52:09Speaker 3: saying it because he doesn't want to be the one
- 52:12Speaker 3: that scars the kid. He leaves the question for the kid.
- 52:15Speaker 3: He leaves it to Baine to decide. If you tell
- 52:19Speaker 3: this kid that you're his real father, you're responsible. And
- 52:27Speaker 3: the thing is, it's that little spark, that weird spark
- 52:30Speaker 3: moment of Bain walking away and not saying anything to
- 52:36Speaker 3: the kid. That's that's gorgeous. I watched this arc with
- 52:41Speaker 3: my kid, and I can tell you that the inferences
- 52:47Speaker 3: and the references work. I think that you have an
- 52:56Speaker 3: incredible moment when he goes back and sees his reflection
- 53:02Speaker 3: in the store window that's now shut up, and he
- 53:05Speaker 3: sees his reflection as a child and he shoots it
- 53:08Speaker 3: like that's that's visual storytelling I'm not getting in live
- 53:13Speaker 3: action shows right now, and that and and the thing
- 53:17Speaker 3: is like in you know, it's a beautiful moving moment.
- 53:20Speaker 3: And then I get mad because of like why can't
- 53:24Speaker 3: I get this in other places? Why can't I get
- 53:27Speaker 3: more of this sort of thing?
- 53:28Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 53:29Speaker 1: I mean I agree that this is this is above
- 53:32Speaker 1: a lot of things that that we watch. I I
- 53:37Speaker 1: would still die on the hill that this show, this arc,
- 53:45Speaker 1: it does not do enough to explain to me why
- 53:50Speaker 1: Colby a ka Cad Baine is so hardhearted, is so
- 54:00Speaker 1: unmovable in any way, shape or form. And uh I
- 54:07Speaker 1: I feel like it again, it's like it just needed
- 54:15Speaker 1: one to two more. Oh I see, I couldn't And
- 54:19Speaker 1: I get, I get what you're saying. Yeah, but I
- 54:23Speaker 1: just I don't. I don't agree And I think I
- 54:26Speaker 1: think that again it's like lacking that one to two percent,
- 54:32Speaker 1: which which would actually put it over the bab.
- 54:37Speaker 3: Oh see see I again I can't disagree more because
- 54:40Speaker 3: you have him in his childhood, he makes that first decision.
- 54:46Speaker 3: Then when we pick up with him again. We know
- 54:48Speaker 3: he's been with the man in the hat all that time,
- 54:52Speaker 3: who has shaped his worldview and he loves and that
- 54:57Speaker 3: person is taken away from him, and there's that anger,
- 55:02Speaker 3: and then he's betrayed by the woman he loves and
- 55:06Speaker 3: winds up in prison for it. I don't think you
- 55:09Speaker 3: need much more than that to be you know, hard hard.
- 55:13Speaker 1: I get what you're saying. But the problem is is
- 55:15Speaker 1: that for me, you have this character who has this
- 55:22Speaker 1: relationship with this woman, and what's fascinating to me is
- 55:29Speaker 1: that the relationship with himt with this this guy Laslow
- 55:38Speaker 1: is more important than the relationship he has with her
- 55:44Speaker 1: and I and I can understand how, and I can
- 55:48Speaker 1: infer how an orphan needs a father figure and this
- 55:53Speaker 1: guy kind of becomes that for him. But again, the
- 56:02Speaker 1: way in which cad Baine just kind of comes off
- 56:06Speaker 1: is the complete, just total, and I'm going to keep
- 56:09Speaker 1: this very friendly for families, But he is the worst.
- 56:15Speaker 1: He is the absolute worst in the decisions that he makes,
- 56:18Speaker 1: the fact that.
- 56:19Speaker 4: He yeah, he makes bad decisions, sure.
- 56:22Speaker 1: No I know, but like, but the beauty that I
- 56:27Speaker 1: love about Okay, you brought up the prequels, right, is
- 56:30Speaker 1: that every decision Anakin makes is the kind of this
- 56:35Speaker 1: this good intentions path there are.
- 56:38Speaker 3: Actually it's slowing the Tuscans. Wasn't really a good intention
- 56:43Speaker 3: I'm to get.
- 56:44Speaker 1: What I'm saying, though, is like there there's there's this
- 56:47Speaker 1: understandable thought process as to why Anakin kind of makes
- 56:51Speaker 1: the choices that he does.
- 56:53Speaker 4: And I think that's completely there with cad Baine.
- 56:56Speaker 1: And I disagree it's not there enough, specially when it
- 57:01Speaker 1: comes to his relationship with Aaron, especially when its relationship again.
- 57:06Speaker 4: Do you want to see the first or something?
- 57:09Speaker 1: No, what I want to see is what happened in
- 57:15Speaker 1: his life to make him turn so like his heart
- 57:19Speaker 1: is a complete heart of stone.
- 57:22Speaker 4: You see those things, No, you don't.
- 57:25Speaker 1: You don't see those things.
- 57:27Speaker 4: You know you don't see. You have to infer those things,
- 57:31Speaker 4: and there are.
- 57:34Speaker 1: Look, we've talked about this so many times. Things need
- 57:38Speaker 1: to show. Please no show.
- 57:45Speaker 4: The showdow negotiation, and we don't show you listen the show.
- 57:52Speaker 4: Do tell phrase is so massively abused and misused by.
- 57:57Speaker 1: Everybody who's making don't abuse it in the way I'm
- 58:00Speaker 1: using it. Disagree with may disagree about that one I
- 58:03Speaker 1: bet I have a friend who would agree with us.
- 58:07Speaker 3: You might have a friend. That's possible. Whether they agree
- 58:11Speaker 3: with you as immaterial. But and and call appeal to authority,
- 58:16Speaker 3: how dare you? That's not that's not cool.
- 58:20Speaker 1: The I've appealed to authority, can't I've appealed to editing,
- 58:23Speaker 1: which is another thing that you like to talk about.
- 58:26Speaker 1: And and I've appealed to storytelling. And all three of
- 58:30Speaker 1: those agree with me in this.
- 58:32Speaker 4: Oh oh do they do? They?
- 58:34Speaker 3: They do, by the way, appeal to appeal to authority
- 58:36Speaker 3: as somebody who was in the debate club that loses
- 58:39Speaker 3: you points.
- 58:40Speaker 4: Just so you know it's a negative.
- 58:43Speaker 3: But in terms of everything that's being told with cad Baine,
- 58:48Speaker 3: you see the moments that turn him into what he
- 58:52Speaker 3: is by the end of it. You see those moments
- 58:55Speaker 3: he makes the first bad decision that sets everything off.
- 58:59Speaker 3: He has a character telling him, don't go off to
- 59:02Speaker 3: seek revenge. This isn't what you're going to want to do.
- 59:05Speaker 3: Then that character betrays him and he winds up getting
- 59:09Speaker 3: sent to prison. That's also a thing that will that
- 59:12Speaker 3: will make some The.
- 59:13Speaker 1: Thing about this is that she tells him specifically, there's
- 59:20Speaker 1: more to this than you know, because she hasn't had
- 59:23Speaker 1: the time to tell him, hey I'm pregnant yet. Yes,
- 59:26Speaker 1: I know, and and but my point is is again
- 59:30Speaker 1: he chooses revenge over her. Yes, And what I don't
- 59:36Speaker 1: what I don't think that the episodes do a good
- 59:39Speaker 1: enough job of is showing you specifically as to why
- 59:47Speaker 1: Colby would make these decisions to turn into Cad Baine
- 59:52Speaker 1: who becomes this cold hearted turd face. No that nothing
- 59:59Speaker 1: moves him, no except for the idea of revenge. What
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: what drives him to the point where all that's left.
- 1:00:07Speaker 3: That's the point is that the Okay, the thing is,
- 1:00:12Speaker 3: you're digging in your heels. You're not even listening at
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: this point. And that's fine, that's fine. But when he
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: gets to the point where he has shot his former
- 1:00:24Speaker 3: best friend who's dying, and then he realizes that former
- 1:00:30Speaker 3: best friend has been taking care of his son this
- 1:00:33Speaker 3: whole time and has acted as a father to him
- 1:00:36Speaker 3: that he couldn't be and he turns away and walks off. Yeah,
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: that's a decision too, and he's deciding to be that way.
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: It's not that he's passively embracing fate and saying, well,
- 1:00:52Speaker 3: this is my life. Now he's saying, Oh, the way
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: he's going to survive is to be that he has
- 1:01:01Speaker 3: to decide to go down that path, and he decides
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: it's a very active way to do it. And like,
- 1:01:07Speaker 3: I just couldn't disagree more with you about this whole,
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: this whole thing.
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: Like again, you hit, It's fine, It's not the first
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: time you've been wrong in our conversations.
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I'm sure I'm looking forward to our and
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: or discussion when I may throw some of these things
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: right back at you.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that's okay, that's that's a straight up masterpiece.
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: And yeah, the viewing numbers, yeah, definitely.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: But I think I I totally get what you're saying.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: All I'm saying is it needs one percent more.
- 1:01:43Speaker 3: And I'm just saying and that's like walking into a
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: designer and saying.
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: That is because in tails of the Jedi Tales of
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: the Empire, in those last few seasons of the Clone Wars,
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: the Bad Batch, I don't have any of these type
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: of critiques like this, but this one I do, and
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: it just feels like this. I my opinion is that
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: this arc does not feel like it has the the
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: quite the polish it has polish, but it doesn't have
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: quite the polish that even just the Massage Ventris arc as.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: Now this, this, this arc does have some incredible visuals.
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: That moment of the standoff there in the second episode
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: where the Embers are flying by them just drop dead gorgeous,
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: Like you know, all of that stuff here is on
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: an incredible level and meets with all of my expectations.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: You know, I love all that. I think they do
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: such a great job in that.
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: And so.
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: I don't want anybody to hear this to say, you know,
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: if you're listening to this, I'm not saying this isn't
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: a good arc. What I'm saying to me, this isn't
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: a great arc. And so and again, it's not like
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: it's bad. It just doesn't reach the heights that I've
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: come to expect from the work of the animated team
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: there at Star Wars over the last few years. And
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: you know, it's fine if if you know, again, I
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: just rewatched it before we recorded, and it's not like
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: I don't like it at all, it's just not I
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: if I have a choice, I'd rewatch you know, arcs
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: and Tails the Jedi or the Assage arc or Tails
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: the Empire before I watched this one again.
- 1:03:56Speaker 4: So that's fine.
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: I will take the role of the saying here and
- 1:04:06Speaker 3: just it's it's it's a low key, just absolute toward
- 1:04:14Speaker 3: a force in visual storytelling and in uh tragedy honestly,
- 1:04:22Speaker 3: because Cad Baine is completely responsible for every one of
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: these decisions that screw up his life and he doesn't
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: have regret about it. Like that's what makes him even
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: worse is he doesn't express any regret about it. Vader
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: where you know, Vader's you know, sad about it, you know,
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: at least implied. He is like, oh no, I cause
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: these things and this is terrible. I did these things.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: Cad Baine's fine not redeeming himself. In fact, we're going
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: to see him all the way to the end of
- 1:04:52Speaker 3: his life. We've now seen his entire lifespan. Basically, No,
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: he just doubles down, like right, and that in and
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: of itself makes him an even more character that he
- 1:05:01Speaker 3: isn't sitting there saying oh no and being passive about it.
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: He's making these choices as he goes along and he's like, well, yeah,
- 1:05:07Speaker 3: I made this choice and I'm going to stay. And
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: there are people who are just that stubborn who aren't
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: going to look at it and you know, uh uh,
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: you know reconsider they're just going to choose this is
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: this is what I chose, and I'm therefore right and
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: I'm not going to change my mind because that's just
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: how I want it to be.
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: Sure, No, and I agree with that. My only contention
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: is is that if you're going to have her have
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: a character be that in Transient, I would love a
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: little bit more understanding as to why they are that
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: in Transient. I'm just by their heart is so dead inside.
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: I'm just offering that I'm not the only person who
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: who picked up on this.
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: This is obviously just going.
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: To be a point of disagreement between the two of us,
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: whether you want to make an appeal to authority or not.
- 1:06:02Speaker 4: I I am.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: No again, it's it's again.
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: I love on this one.
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: Totally fine with it. It doesn't bother me that we we disagree.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: I think obviously too, it makes for a fun show
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: for everybody to to be able to listen to. But John,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: with the discussion of both arcs, here, where are you
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: landing your rankings for Okay?
- 1:06:29Speaker 4: And where do you land.
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: I think I'm probably going to give this four stars.
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: I I think if if it had just been the
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: Massage arc, it would be a full five. And uh,
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: the cad Bane arc for me is what, like I said,
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: while good, it just doesn't I mean, it's a four
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: star arc itself, you know. Uh, and so you know,
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: maybe this could be four and a half stars, but no,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: I mean again, if I'm splitting them up, it's five
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: stars and four stars, and I guess together you just
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: kind of come down to me for four stars. And
- 1:07:15Speaker 1: so but I love it in the sense that I
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: mean when it comes to my enjoyment of Star Wars material.
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: You know, the animation continues though to hit it out
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: of the park. Whether this was my favorite thing they've
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: done in animation is totally irrelevant. I mean, it just
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: it continues to just be some of the best Star
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: Wars storytelling that we get. And as we mentioned at
- 1:07:45Speaker 1: the beginning when we talked about you know, mall shadow Lord,
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: it's like, this is what makes us so excited that
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: we're doing this, right, we're gonna get that show is
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: because it's so great. It's it's so good the stuff
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: that they do. You know, I think specifically when I
- 1:08:05Speaker 1: think of the loving care of that those opening shots
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: of the Massage arc. I mean, every part of this
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: is done with love and uh and so I can't
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: wait to get more Star Wars animation. But John, if
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: people wanted to find you, and I'm sure send you
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: messages about why I'm stupid and all those types of things,
- 1:08:30Speaker 1: that where would they find?
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: Oh, come on, come on, don't be that way. Don't
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: be that don't don't curl up at a little pill
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: ball there and be all like, oh, hurt by everything, pillball.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: You know me, I will defend my opinions to the death.
- 1:08:45Speaker 3: And hopefully, hopefully, hopefully it'll escalate to that at one
- 1:08:50Speaker 3: point one of us will clutch our chest and kill.
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: You know what.
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: You know what, at least I'm not at the point
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: where you're trying to find flights to my house so you.
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: Can burn my Well, thank you for listening.
- 1:09:01Speaker 1: And one listener knows what that means, Tristan Raddell.
- 1:09:05Speaker 3: Well, and he knows he deserves it. No, I know
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: for a fact that you're going to be flying to
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: the the the wonderful Kingdom of Kesslvania in a couple
- 1:09:15Speaker 3: of months, and uh, justice will be meeted out. Then
- 1:09:19Speaker 3: good sir, Why why why fly.
- 1:09:22Speaker 4: Out to you? And you're making it easy for me,
- 1:09:25Speaker 4: That's what I'm saying.
- 1:09:26Speaker 1: I thank you for it.
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: Saved me A ton of cash is coming here to
- 1:09:30Speaker 4: take your bill.
- 1:09:30Speaker 1: All I know is, you know, everybody's like, what are
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: you to talk about it? But you know, the old,
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: the old Tristan doesn't have the guts to do that,
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: So at least I got the guts.
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: Yeah, that's right, Yes, that's right, that's right. You're coming here.
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: You're going to take your medicine like a man, and
- 1:09:44Speaker 4: I appreciate it. That's right.
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: Well, what that's referencing actually is that I co host
- 1:09:51Speaker 3: house lights over on the Nerd Party with Darren Moser
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: and Tristan Riddell, both of whose cars I'm going to
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: set on fire at some point once I save up
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: enough money to fly out to their houses, or they
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: can drive over here and I'll set fire to their
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: cars here. And of course, over on the Nerd Party,
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: Matt and I also co host Aggressive Negotiations, which you're
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: listening to on that feed that you're listening to this
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: on whatever words, So you know, thank you for that.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: I'm castle junkie out there. Yeah, I'm not very active
- 1:10:20Speaker 3: on social right now, but you know, feel free to
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: seek me out if you will. But you know, Matt,
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: you know we have a time over there on aggressive
- 1:10:27Speaker 3: negotiations on the Nerd Party.
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: But you know where else can people find you at?
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: Yeah, you could find me all over social media under
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: the name Matt Rushing Zoe too. So I love to
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: talk to you there. Please hit me up once we
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: get a chance. You can also find me over on
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: the Nerd Party Network with another show called owl Post,
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: which is a completed show about every single chapter the
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: Harry Potter series. And here on the TFM Network in
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: the six or two Club, you'll find me with a
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: lot of great Star Trek talk there with the great
- 1:10:56Speaker 1: Chris Jones Is. We talk through a lot of different things.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: One of my favorites is the fact that we're doing
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: a bunch of anniversary rewatches for Star Trek shows, so
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: you know, whether it's Star Trek, Voyager, Start Trek, these
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: Chase nine, Star Trek Enterprise. Look forward to having you
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: listen to those over there with Warp five to the
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: Journey and the Orb and of course we're looking forward
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: to the fact that at some point this summer Stranger
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: Worlds is actually coming back, and so saddle up, we'll
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: be back as well. So check all of those out.
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: But John, you know, I think it's time to close
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: these negotiations and you know, maybe just you know, have
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: a drink here in a six oh two club after
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: those well what we could say aggressive
