Transcript
- 0:10Speaker 1: Good graphic.
- 0:12Speaker 2: Yeah, welcome to foul Territory today on what is it Wednesday? Jess,
- 0:17Speaker 2: you asked me Wednesday today this week, we're obviously live
- 0:20Speaker 2: in Duneed and at Blue Jays camp, and we're joined
- 0:22Speaker 2: by one of the managers lucky enough to make the
- 0:25Speaker 2: front end. And it's only because Krats begged for you
- 0:28Speaker 2: to make it. Now we've had managers complain because they
- 0:30Speaker 2: are not on it, but because of your relationship.
- 0:33Speaker 3: See, we put you.
- 0:33Speaker 1: On it, Cratzy, Thank you.
- 0:35Speaker 4: I noticed it was me and Cido, which is even better.
- 0:38Speaker 4: So it's nice to get a little little FaceTime there,
- 0:40Speaker 4: so I appreciate it.
- 0:41Speaker 3: You have a face made for TV, do you think?
- 0:43Speaker 4: Or voice made for radio or face made for radio voice?
- 0:49Speaker 4: I wouldn't say face made for TV.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Huh, okay, that's fair. Uh.
- 0:53Speaker 2: We were just talking about WBC off before you came
- 0:55Speaker 2: on and before we dig into the Blue Jays. Are
- 0:58Speaker 2: you glad it's over?
- 0:59Speaker 3: Yes?
- 1:00Speaker 4: Cool event, cool to kind of have a little bit
- 1:04Speaker 4: of intensity this time of year. But glad everyone made
- 1:07Speaker 4: it through. Glad everyone's back in camp, Ernie and Himmy
- 1:11Speaker 4: and Hoff and Roger be back today and getting Vlad
- 1:14Speaker 4: and Kirkie and Kaz back was nice. So yeah, glad
- 1:18Speaker 4: it's over, and but it was fun to watch it
- 1:20Speaker 4: was it was cool and glad everyone made it through healthy.
- 1:23Speaker 5: What makes you more nervous watching one of your guys
- 1:25Speaker 5: playing in a you know, slide into second throwing pitches
- 1:29Speaker 5: or the fact that Ernie Clement had to sit on
- 1:31Speaker 5: the bench the whole time and wasn't getting a lot
- 1:33Speaker 5: of at bats.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Yeah, a little bit of both.
- 1:36Speaker 4: You know, I had a text Earn, you know, take
- 1:38Speaker 4: it easy on sliding headfirst into you know, head person
- 1:41Speaker 4: to first on a on a ground ball in the infield,
- 1:44Speaker 4: But you still want to Spring training is tough because
- 1:47Speaker 4: you just want everyone to get the work in. You know,
- 1:48Speaker 4: you get nervous even when guys are you know, pickoffs
- 1:51Speaker 4: at first. There was one the other day down in
- 1:54Speaker 4: West Palm with Varsh getting back a little awkward. So
- 1:57Speaker 4: you're always on the lookout for that kind of stuff
- 1:59Speaker 4: and when you can't control it when they're not here,
- 2:00Speaker 4: it's just like, already are you getting enough work? And
- 2:03Speaker 4: as much as you talk to the guys or talk
- 2:05Speaker 4: to d Row or talk to Omar, they're trying to win,
- 2:09Speaker 4: you know, So they got to do what they got
- 2:10Speaker 4: to do too, But I think once you get through
- 2:13Speaker 4: camp everyone feels a lot better.
- 2:14Speaker 2: How often do you have those conversations with the managers
- 2:17Speaker 2: of the teams? And then also what's more nerve wrecking
- 2:19Speaker 2: a position player like I'll use Alejandro because he's catching
- 2:24Speaker 2: a little more susceptible to foul balls and stuff like that,
- 2:26Speaker 2: or a pitcher out there blowing their best gas in
- 2:30Speaker 2: the middle of March.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Yeah, it's for me, it's always pitchers.
- 2:33Speaker 4: I think the guys that were playing, they did a
- 2:35Speaker 4: good job to get themselves ready to play.
- 2:38Speaker 1: All the managers were great.
- 2:39Speaker 4: Benji in Mexico, d Row, they've been great, Kaz new
- 2:44Speaker 4: exact his exact play with Japan, and you know, you
- 2:47Speaker 4: just shoot the text here and there and kind of
- 2:49Speaker 4: make sure they're following along with what we had talked about.
- 2:52Speaker 4: There were a couple of games when I was texting
- 2:53Speaker 4: with Benji, just with Turkey to make sure that there
- 2:55Speaker 4: was the proper off days when he's catching back to back.
- 2:58Speaker 4: But the pitching side of it, you know, just with
- 3:00Speaker 4: Hoff and Roge going late, you know, just like when
- 3:03Speaker 4: are you getting up, are you getting up hot?
- 3:04Speaker 1: Are you going into the game.
- 3:06Speaker 4: Things that we can control in spring training that are
- 3:08Speaker 4: just a little bit a little bit tougher to do
- 3:10Speaker 4: in that scenario.
- 3:11Speaker 1: So I'm kind of glad that.
- 3:14Speaker 4: I don't want to say glad Hoff didn't pitch, but
- 3:17Speaker 4: Rog is kind of a veteran guy, and you kind
- 3:19Speaker 4: of know he's pretty low maintenance and things like that.
- 3:22Speaker 4: He's not throwing a hundred, so you worry about the
- 3:25Speaker 4: pitchers for sure. So thankfully we didn't have guys out there,
- 3:29Speaker 4: you know, seventy eighty pitches where they're kind of getting
- 3:32Speaker 4: after a big time. You saw it as the as
- 3:34Speaker 4: the rounds went on, Savarino's throwing a hundred. You know,
- 3:37Speaker 4: it's a little bit of a different atmosphere. So glad
- 3:40Speaker 4: we weren't in that situation.
- 3:42Speaker 5: You're not the one making those calls. It's Voon Chung's
- 3:45Speaker 5: making the call. People higher than you. You're just all
- 3:49Speaker 5: down all my correct.
- 3:51Speaker 4: Yeah, well, it's a collective effort for sure, you know,
- 3:53Speaker 4: but I think that we as much as you try
- 3:56Speaker 4: to have parameters around it, it always gets a little
- 3:59Speaker 4: bit you know, gray, because guys are trying to win.
- 4:03Speaker 4: But yeah, it wasn't just me saying, hey, Dro, make
- 4:06Speaker 4: sure er and he gets three at bats, or if
- 4:08Speaker 4: you get haff up, you know, you got to get
- 4:10Speaker 4: him in. Things like that, you know, all things you
- 4:12Speaker 4: talk about, but then the game takes over and you
- 4:14Speaker 4: got to kind of make the best decision you can.
- 4:16Speaker 4: So I think everything considered, I think all the managers
- 4:19Speaker 4: did a good job. We were talking about Dro saying
- 4:21Speaker 4: he was honoring the padres by not thoughing Mason Miller
- 4:24Speaker 4: whether or not he wanted to, you know, I don't know,
- 4:27Speaker 4: but I think it's a collective efforcratsy for sure.
- 4:30Speaker 2: But by the way, Diiro did say this that if
- 4:32Speaker 2: he gets someone out there coming in, there was.
- 4:33Speaker 1: No dry hunt, right all.
- 4:35Speaker 3: He said that from the get going, and.
- 4:37Speaker 4: And he's he's been around, he kind of gets you know,
- 4:39Speaker 4: any pettit's been around. It's it's a little bit different
- 4:41Speaker 4: when you're managing it. But I think with the parameters
- 4:44Speaker 4: every club put in place, I think that's the way
- 4:46Speaker 4: you got to do it, you know, because guys aren't
- 4:48Speaker 4: used to getting up and sitting down and then getting
- 4:49Speaker 4: up and coming in, and that's like the manager's worst fear,
- 4:52Speaker 4: even in regular season.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I hate in that to guys.
- 4:54Speaker 2: Yeah, by the way, so last one on the DVBC,
- 4:58Speaker 2: if they came to you after your career and Toronto
- 5:00Speaker 2: is done, would you manage Canada or would you manage USA?
- 5:04Speaker 2: Would Ernie finally just decides to not do it because
- 5:08Speaker 2: he's managed every hasn't he managed.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Done every year? Yeah?
- 5:12Speaker 6: I don't.
- 5:12Speaker 1: I would. I would be.
- 5:14Speaker 4: Intrigued to do either one, to be honest with you,
- 5:17Speaker 4: but I think you know, I showed my loyalty to
- 5:20Speaker 4: Canadian hockey earlier in spring and caught a lot of
- 5:24Speaker 4: backlash from some of the players.
- 5:27Speaker 1: So I mean, yeah, well we would see at that
- 5:29Speaker 1: point when.
- 5:30Speaker 3: You're reading for Canada or US when they played Canada.
- 5:35Speaker 4: Oh sorry, if they met in hockey, so you know,
- 5:38Speaker 4: w b C. I was rooting for the US, okay, yeah,
- 5:40Speaker 4: like no offense, Earn and Russ and those guys. You know,
- 5:43Speaker 4: Ques there, Paul Quantrell's there. I think with baseball, you
- 5:46Speaker 4: kind of just got to stick to your roots a
- 5:48Speaker 4: little bit. I just think there's a better version of
- 5:49Speaker 4: hockey in Canada than there is in the US.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Plus except US wins the Stanley Cup every year.
- 5:53Speaker 1: I know, but I'm not a huge hockey guy.
- 5:55Speaker 4: So I don't really have much to go on, so
- 5:56Speaker 4: just trying to like make a little bit of a story,
- 5:58Speaker 4: which I did.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Yeah, but I think it'd be I think it'd be cool.
- 6:01Speaker 1: But let Ernie. Let Ernie keep doing it for as
- 6:02Speaker 1: long as he wants.
- 6:03Speaker 3: Can you stay here? Yeah? Exactly, mean exactly.
- 6:06Speaker 5: I would love nothing more than to say, two thousand
- 6:09Speaker 5: and two, John Schneider takes over a team because Ernie
- 6:13Speaker 5: Witt was our catching coach when we both got drafted.
- 6:16Speaker 6: So Ernie Witt has been the guy.
- 6:19Speaker 4: He's still throwing money BP too. If you saw him,
- 6:22Speaker 4: you know on the on the he's still throwing that money.
- 6:24Speaker 4: VP that he was like the only guy that can
- 6:27Speaker 4: make me look good as a hitter in the minor
- 6:28Speaker 4: leagues hitting off of Ernie Wit so that could he
- 6:32Speaker 4: was money.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And still is so like a short catcher short arm.
- 6:36Speaker 4: I mean right there, barrel find two miles from now, yeh,
- 6:39Speaker 4: Like he could be in a home run derby throwing.
- 6:41Speaker 4: You know, he's he's money, wow to make me look good.
- 6:46Speaker 6: This one's for the dudes looking for peak bedroom performance.

- 7:47Speaker 5: And if somebody knows that, it would be Schneidz. Schneids
- 7:50Speaker 5: knows some BP just ask Vlad. Yeah, John Schneider's thrown
- 7:54Speaker 5: in the home run derby. Maybe that's why Vlad doesn't
- 7:57Speaker 5: doesn't always win, because sometimes you're too, you're too big
- 8:00Speaker 5: time in high faluting for him.
- 8:02Speaker 6: But hey, don't worry about it.
- 8:03Speaker 1: We'll get you back every time, every time he's done it.
- 8:06Speaker 1: I've been there. I flew across the country to Seattle
- 8:08Speaker 1: if it him he wanted. So I'm not going to
- 8:10Speaker 1: turn my guy down.
- 8:12Speaker 4: Never too big time for him, didged I have not
- 8:17Speaker 4: changed your pull it, No, have not changed. I'm still
- 8:21Speaker 4: I'm still me. I'm still a dude, one of the guys.
- 8:24Speaker 4: But yeah, it was a it was a nice It
- 8:26Speaker 4: was a nice little.
- 8:27Speaker 3: Gift, a trophy in half and hand you one of
- 8:29Speaker 3: the bats.
- 8:29Speaker 4: No, no, it was it was a wearable gift that
- 8:33Speaker 4: I'll have for a long time.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah, nice.
- 8:37Speaker 4: Yeah he did well, he did well. All right, How
- 8:39Speaker 4: excited did you for this year's can't wait? You know
- 8:42Speaker 4: it's end of camp, you know, you know it is
- 8:45Speaker 4: spring training. Everyone's excited, especially this year. Was cool to
- 8:47Speaker 4: get back around the guys after last year and get
- 8:50Speaker 4: things going. But I think looking at what we have
- 8:52Speaker 4: built here, looking at the new faces that are here,
- 8:55Speaker 4: I can't wait to see kind of the product on
- 8:57Speaker 4: the field. So I think we did a good job
- 8:59Speaker 4: of bringing in some complimentary pieces, bringing in some different
- 9:03Speaker 4: looks from us starting pitching standpoint, adding Kaz and his
- 9:07Speaker 4: back to ball skills, his power, I think fits us
- 9:09Speaker 4: really well and we we kind of figure out what
- 9:12Speaker 4: we were good at last year. That's kind of what
- 9:13Speaker 4: I keep going back to. And then within that, how
- 9:16Speaker 4: do you add more talent that is already doing what
- 9:19Speaker 4: they're they have been doing to fit into this system.
- 9:21Speaker 4: So can't wait to get it going. You know, we
- 9:25Speaker 4: were missing staff members. Carlos was gone to the WBC
- 9:28Speaker 4: and those guys gone. So now being back around everyone
- 9:31Speaker 4: gets you a little bit more excited. But man, I
- 9:34Speaker 4: can't wait to get back up there and just see
- 9:35Speaker 4: the fans, see the stadium and kind of hopefully pick
- 9:38Speaker 4: uphere we left off, although you know, an eyelash here there.
- 9:41Speaker 6: Better all right?
- 9:42Speaker 5: So you have a lot of rotation options. Some are
- 9:46Speaker 5: a little bit down. Can you tell us about those
- 9:50Speaker 5: conversations that you have to have with those guys, because
- 9:53Speaker 5: I get it everyone every manager at this time. It's
- 9:55Speaker 5: a good problem to have. It'll take care of yourself.
- 9:58Speaker 5: But are the guys that you're expecting are they bouncing
- 10:00Speaker 5: back okay?
- 10:01Speaker 6: And spring training?
- 10:02Speaker 5: Are they you know, Trey early was having a little
- 10:04Speaker 5: bit of issue bouncing back. So are you feeling like
- 10:07Speaker 5: you have the five guys right now set on March
- 10:10Speaker 5: eighteenth to start.
- 10:12Speaker 1: The same I think yeah, I think so.
- 10:14Speaker 4: You know, I think looking back probably a month ago,
- 10:17Speaker 4: it's like, where do these guys all fit? And baseball
- 10:20Speaker 4: has a way of kind of sorting that out and
- 10:22Speaker 4: talking to the guys they're all. I think last year
- 10:24Speaker 4: kind of put us in a different category when we
- 10:26Speaker 4: acquired Bebes and you try a six man rotation for
- 10:29Speaker 4: a couple times through and there's some uncomfortable conversations, there's
- 10:32Speaker 4: some unhappy campers, but I think they all understand, like, hey,
- 10:36Speaker 4: we're just trying to go out and win. You know,
- 10:38Speaker 4: our division is no joke. Every team has gotten better
- 10:42Speaker 4: around the league, so we're trying to just say who
- 10:45Speaker 4: is going to fit best right now, and however it starts,
- 10:47Speaker 4: it's probably not going to end that way with the
- 10:49Speaker 4: way the season goes. So really impressed with how keV Gosman,
- 10:53Speaker 4: obviously opening day starter, you know, pitching a lot last
- 10:56Speaker 4: year and really bouncing. I was interested to see how
- 10:59Speaker 4: he came in with the workload he had last year.
- 11:02Speaker 4: He looks like he hasn't missed a beat. And then
- 11:04Speaker 4: you know, Cease is kind of the model of consistency.
- 11:06Speaker 4: Cody pontce is kind of a wild card coming over
- 11:09Speaker 4: back from overseas, and they've all kind of hit the
- 11:11Speaker 4: ground running, So that part I like, And then you
- 11:16Speaker 4: have Jose, you got Lower, you got Max, you know,
- 11:18Speaker 4: you got Trey. It's I think they all fit at
- 11:21Speaker 4: some point, and it's just a matter of when they
- 11:24Speaker 4: all are healthy making those decisions at that point.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Good luck. Yeah, it's good to have that many.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Options, it is, you know, and and really like going
- 11:31Speaker 4: through it last year, just you know, it's it's hard
- 11:33Speaker 4: because all these guys want to start, you know, and
- 11:35Speaker 4: I think that we've what we've said was, you know,
- 11:37Speaker 4: if you're on a different team, you know, it's probably
- 11:39Speaker 4: a little.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Bit easier to give you that runway.
- 11:41Speaker 4: When when you have a team that's that's fairly talented
- 11:44Speaker 4: or very talented, there's kind of a good amount of
- 11:47Speaker 4: competition going on, so they kind of get that, and
- 11:51Speaker 4: you know, just focusing on winning is kind of the
- 11:53Speaker 4: most important thing.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Let's you have Street Craig, because you guys won the
- 11:56Speaker 2: league and yeah, yeah, I mean they kind of can
- 11:58Speaker 2: you can rock to Jay's a little cooler now?
- 12:00Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 12:00Speaker 3: The street?
- 12:00Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 12:01Speaker 4: I mean, well, I think any if anything, it kind
- 12:03Speaker 4: of going back to last year was cool because like
- 12:06Speaker 4: postseason and World Series aside. You know, that was a
- 12:09Speaker 4: great run and we played really well for the three
- 12:10Speaker 4: weeks in that time, but it was kind of what
- 12:13Speaker 4: we did to get there, you know, which I think
- 12:15Speaker 4: is really sustainable, winning ninety four games as opposed to
- 12:17Speaker 4: seventy four of the year before. And the guys kind
- 12:20Speaker 4: of trust our process and I think that we understand
- 12:22Speaker 4: that our process and the way we prepare and how
- 12:24Speaker 4: we evaluate things is.
- 12:25Speaker 1: Good and it showed last year.
- 12:26Speaker 4: So it's just kind of like, how can we continue
- 12:28Speaker 4: to do that and how can we get it a
- 12:29Speaker 4: little bit better? But I think the players most importantly
- 12:32Speaker 4: see that, hey, this is a this is a pretty
- 12:34Speaker 4: good product.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Agreed, Agreed? All Right.
- 12:37Speaker 2: You mentioned that we talked about the pitchers, position players,
- 12:39Speaker 2: No bo right, a couple of changes. How good can
- 12:42Speaker 2: kas be? How good can this guy come coming from Japan? Yeah,
- 12:46Speaker 2: to the major leagues? How good can he be?
- 12:50Speaker 6: Arry?
- 12:51Speaker 4: I guess to answer your question quickly, you know, I
- 12:53Speaker 4: think that there's so much more information data that you
- 12:56Speaker 4: can kind of look at and say, well, this translate
- 12:59Speaker 4: and they're there's going to be an adjustment period. But
- 13:01Speaker 4: he is kind of just a natural hitter to where
- 13:06Speaker 4: easy power, ton of contact. Again, I don't want to
- 13:10Speaker 4: put like a floor or a ceiling on him. I
- 13:11Speaker 4: think just how he fits within our lineup and who's
- 13:14Speaker 4: starting that night and things like that. I think that
- 13:16Speaker 4: he's going to fit in really really well, and we
- 13:19Speaker 4: try to kind of diversify it as much as we can.
- 13:21Speaker 4: Guys are going to make contact, we're going to put
- 13:23Speaker 4: pressure on the defense, and we're going to ask some
- 13:26Speaker 4: guys to slug. So I think just finding out when
- 13:28Speaker 4: to do what, because you know he's going to put
- 13:31Speaker 4: the bat of the ball. You know a lot of
- 13:32Speaker 4: these guys that are hitting home runs, there's a lot
- 13:33Speaker 4: of swing and miss. He's kind of the opposite end
- 13:36Speaker 4: of that spectrum to where he can manipulate the barrel
- 13:38Speaker 4: and he has a lot of adjustability in his swing.
- 13:40Speaker 4: So I'm excited to see kind of his overall game.
- 13:44Speaker 4: Before he left, he was making some really good progress
- 13:47Speaker 4: and hitting it off with Pop and Lou and Cody,
- 13:50Speaker 4: so it's not like one guy replacing Bo, Like we're
- 13:52Speaker 4: not asking Cash to replace Bo. Different kind of hitter
- 13:56Speaker 4: for sure, but what we like his skill set to
- 13:59Speaker 4: complement our lineup and.
- 14:00Speaker 1: At third base.
- 14:01Speaker 4: I think there's a lot of room to get better.
- 14:05Speaker 4: We're gonna have him play probably a little bit deeper
- 14:07Speaker 4: in terms of depth and get a little bit more
- 14:09Speaker 4: range out of him. And he's on board with that.
- 14:11Speaker 4: So he's going to be, you know, a big part
- 14:13Speaker 4: of what we're doing. And I've said, the more he's
- 14:16Speaker 4: out there for us, I think, the better team we
- 14:19Speaker 4: have every single night.
- 14:20Speaker 3: He's bigger than I thought he was.
- 14:22Speaker 1: So he's a monster man, bigger.
- 14:23Speaker 4: I saw him today and just like tree trunk leg Yeah,
- 14:27Speaker 4: really sneaky, funny guy to really really he didn't have
- 14:31Speaker 4: an interpreter on, but he's he's sneaky, funny.
- 14:34Speaker 3: Well, John, thank you for joining us part of it.
- 14:36Speaker 3: By the way, show your watch the Orris Watch Mafia,
- 14:38Speaker 3: Crats you look with.
- 14:39Speaker 2: The blue Yeah, you know part of the manager. Yeah,
- 14:42Speaker 2: Hench Hinch said he was going to give Crats one maybe.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Giving I got a couple of extra in the office, Boom.
- 14:48Speaker 4: If you ever travel instead of doing this remotely, you know,
- 14:51Speaker 4: you never know. But the Orrist watch thing is, I mean,
- 14:53Speaker 4: there's more more guys wearing big big referend.
- 14:56Speaker 1: W DC guys are wearing it.
- 14:58Speaker 9: You know.
- 14:58Speaker 4: It's yeah, shout out to or it's.
- 15:03Speaker 5: I'll forget those sunglasses. I'll forget those sunglasses I gave
- 15:05Speaker 5: you back in the day that got you a managerial pens.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I know, I know that was the turning board in
- 15:11Speaker 1: my career. You're so right.
- 15:12Speaker 6: I'll watch. It's fine, I'll watch, it's fine.
- 15:14Speaker 3: We're good, Thank you very much. This year we'll be
- 15:20Speaker 3: right back on foul territory.
- 15:21Speaker 7: Bron and crats with you for not much time, and
- 15:24Speaker 7: then we'll get a Kevin Gosman conversation going for everyone.
- 15:28Speaker 7: Let's do the fast and all spring training calendar while
- 15:30Speaker 7: we have it, while it's still going.
- 15:33Speaker 5: So many green checks, so many green checks, Scott, I'm
- 15:37Speaker 5: so upset.
- 15:39Speaker 6: No, that means opening days coming. It's not time to
- 15:41Speaker 6: be sad, it's time to be happy.
- 15:43Speaker 7: You're right, you're right, you're right, and actually tomorrow is
- 15:46Speaker 7: going to be sick. I mean, we're finishing our spring
- 15:48Speaker 7: training tour with the Philadelphia Phillies. Real question, because we
- 15:53Speaker 7: just say it like it is. Do we know if
- 15:56Speaker 7: like Harper and Shoreburn, all those guys are going to
- 15:58Speaker 7: be there tomorrow. I would think, yes, some guys have
- 16:01Speaker 7: taken like an extra beat, an extra day or two.
- 16:03Speaker 7: But I would think that those guys will be back
- 16:06Speaker 7: in Phillies Camp. Will we get them. I don't know.
- 16:09Speaker 7: There's a lot coming at them. They're probably gonna say
- 16:12Speaker 7: life's been a little bit crazy right now. But we
- 16:15Speaker 7: will be at Phillies Camp for our Thursday show, and
- 16:19Speaker 7: that is our last show for spring training, and then
- 16:22Speaker 7: of course we're still on every single day live all
- 16:24Speaker 7: year round.
- 16:26Speaker 1: But we'll see.
- 16:27Speaker 7: I think those guys will be back in camp. I
- 16:29Speaker 7: think usually they give them like a day. Some guys
- 16:32Speaker 7: have taken two or three days.
- 16:34Speaker 6: I think one of themselves.
- 16:35Speaker 5: Because spring is coming to an end, it's real quick,
- 16:37Speaker 5: especially when you're starting talking about packing up some of
- 16:40Speaker 5: your stuff from spring training, because they've been living on
- 16:43Speaker 5: the road, so you got to pack up, get it
- 16:45Speaker 5: on the truck. Maybe even the first truck has already left.
- 16:48Speaker 5: So there's stuff that has to be done at the
- 16:50Speaker 5: end of the season before you go to the exhibition games.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Mm hmm. All right, We're ready to go.
- 16:55Speaker 7: Next convo. Kevin Gosman is.
- 16:57Speaker 2: Here here with opening day starter for the American League
- 17:05Speaker 2: champion Toronto Blue Jays.
- 17:06Speaker 3: Kevin Gosman, how nice? I mean, I guess it sounds nice.
- 17:09Speaker 3: But does it sounds good to me? Which one opening
- 17:13Speaker 3: day or the American League champions?
- 17:14Speaker 9: Both both of them? How many opening days is this
- 17:16Speaker 9: for you? This will be my third for the Blue Jays? No,
- 17:20Speaker 9: third total? First with the yeah, third total?
- 17:21Speaker 2: As I got you in twenty fourteen with the oriole.
- 17:25Speaker 3: Did you pitch Opening day that day? That was seventeen seven?
- 17:28Speaker 8: Yeah?
- 17:29Speaker 3: I thought a bolt fourteen. No, I guess that wasn't you.
- 17:32Speaker 2: That wasn't me, Okai Tillman, Oh yes, yeah, yes, okay,
- 17:37Speaker 2: seventeen was your first one?
- 17:38Speaker 8: Seventeen, then twenty one and then this year?
- 17:41Speaker 3: Why the skip?
- 17:43Speaker 8: I wasn't very good?
- 17:44Speaker 3: And oh stop it. You've been great with Toronto?
- 17:48Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 17:48Speaker 9: Yeah, I have for sure, but yeah, you know, I
- 17:53Speaker 9: mean I think seventeen, I think I was opening day starter,
- 17:55Speaker 9: and I think at the break I had like a
- 17:57Speaker 9: six and a half way so it wasn't my first
- 18:00Speaker 9: opening day start.
- 18:01Speaker 8: Season wasn't great?
- 18:03Speaker 3: Were you nervous. Yeah, for sure.
- 18:07Speaker 9: You know, I think anytime you pitch one of those,
- 18:09Speaker 9: especially the first time you do it, you know, it's
- 18:12Speaker 9: there's a lot of hoopla that comes with it.
- 18:14Speaker 8: And yeah, I was nervous for sure.
- 18:17Speaker 5: Everybody makes a big deal of opening Day. What's the
- 18:19Speaker 5: bigger opening day or the home opener?
- 18:24Speaker 8: Oh? Well, for us, it's one and the same.
- 18:28Speaker 9: This year, I would say opening day, you know, but
- 18:34Speaker 9: the home opener is obviously really cool.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Yeah, do you you guys get your your rings on
- 18:40Speaker 3: the home opener this year? I have no idea a
- 18:43Speaker 3: banner obviously.
- 18:44Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah, I don't really know what the plan is,
- 18:47Speaker 9: you know, I just kind of work here.
- 18:48Speaker 3: Yeah, you got a little bit of poll.
- 18:52Speaker 9: They don't really tell me much, you know. It's just hey,
- 18:55Speaker 9: make sure you get fitted for your ring. And I
- 18:57Speaker 9: don't know anything besides that.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Okay, I mean that's fair. And you play, you guys,
- 19:01Speaker 2: we will still call them Oakland. You guys open with
- 19:03Speaker 2: the athletics. Yes, in Toronto, you have a nice homestand
- 19:06Speaker 2: right it's athletics, and then you guys.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Play Rockies at home. Yeah, you go three summers go
- 19:12Speaker 3: White Sox by.
- 19:13Speaker 8: The way, Yeah, you.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Won't pitch that. Seriously, you're good. If you can go
- 19:17Speaker 3: one to six, you're fine.
- 19:20Speaker 2: Is it important for you guys to get off to
- 19:21Speaker 2: a good start because historically the team that hasn't won
- 19:24Speaker 2: the World Series the next year has a little bit
- 19:27Speaker 2: of a letdown. So is it important with Sacramento, the
- 19:30Speaker 2: A's coming in and then Colorado then the White Sox
- 19:32Speaker 2: to get off to that good start before the Dodgers
- 19:34Speaker 2: come in that next series.
- 19:36Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 19:37Speaker 8: Absolutely.
- 19:37Speaker 9: I think you're always trying to start off, you know,
- 19:41Speaker 9: any any season you're you know, you obviously don't want
- 19:43Speaker 9: to start off slow. But I think this year is
- 19:47Speaker 9: a little different. I think, you know, now we obviously
- 19:49Speaker 9: have a huge target on our back, so you know,
- 19:52Speaker 9: and I've talked to a lot of guys, like every
- 19:54Speaker 9: team that I've faced that was in the World Series
- 19:57Speaker 9: the year before, you know, I knew there were I
- 20:00Speaker 9: knew I was facing the team that was in the
- 20:01Speaker 9: World Series here before, you know, So you got to
- 20:04Speaker 9: kind of just be ready for every team, you know.
- 20:09Speaker 9: I think maybe in the past, teams knew how talented
- 20:12Speaker 9: we were, but I think now it's a little bit different.
- 20:14Speaker 9: They've kind of seen that talent kind of come to
- 20:18Speaker 9: fruition and so yeah, now I think it's a huge
- 20:22Speaker 9: target on our back. So you know, of course we
- 20:25Speaker 9: want to start off great in any season, but I
- 20:28Speaker 9: think this year is going to be a little bit different.
- 20:30Speaker 6: How much?
- 20:31Speaker 5: What are those conversations like because we lost in Game
- 20:33Speaker 5: seven of the World Series and fourteen and then came
- 20:36Speaker 5: back in fifteen and ended up getting a job done.
- 20:39Speaker 5: What are those conversations like throughout the offseason with everybody?
- 20:43Speaker 5: Do you have different threads for starters, starting pitchers, bullpen guys,
- 20:47Speaker 5: pitchers and position players.
- 20:49Speaker 6: What do you guys talk about?
- 20:52Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, honestly, we've kind of just turned the page.
- 20:54Speaker 9: I mean we talked about it kind of really the
- 20:57Speaker 9: first day of camp, but you know, there's nothing we
- 20:59Speaker 9: could do about what happened last season, you know, especially
- 21:02Speaker 9: the way that we lost is it's been heartbreaking and
- 21:07Speaker 9: it's definitely taken a good amount of guys a while
- 21:10Speaker 9: to get over. But you know, that was kind of
- 21:12Speaker 9: Skip's message first day of camp was like, let's let's
- 21:16Speaker 9: not ignore what we did last year because it was
- 21:18Speaker 9: such a such a special run that we went on
- 21:22Speaker 9: really the whole season. I mean, we kind of figured
- 21:24Speaker 9: out our identity and then just kind of honed in
- 21:27Speaker 9: on our strengths. So we really kind of wanted to
- 21:30Speaker 9: remember that. But you know, once the first game of
- 21:33Speaker 9: spring training happens, it's kind of you know, no one's
- 21:36Speaker 9: really talking about last year anymore. It's you kind of
- 21:39Speaker 9: kind of turn the page and get ready to go.
- 21:42Speaker 9: You know, in spring training, I feel like only gets
- 21:44Speaker 9: shorter and shorter, so you know, it's, uh, we had
- 21:47Speaker 9: to kind of turn the page pretty quick.
- 21:49Speaker 3: This year was long with the WBC and all that.
- 21:51Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, it was long, but you know it's just
- 21:54Speaker 9: it's it's I say short, just because when you play
- 21:57Speaker 9: for an extra month, as you know, like spring train
- 22:00Speaker 9: and it was like we blinked and it was Thanksgiving.
- 22:03Speaker 8: So then it's like a good thing.
- 22:04Speaker 3: Though it is a good thing.
- 22:06Speaker 8: It's a great thing.
- 22:07Speaker 2: Frustrat you would we wouldn't want to be done in
- 22:09Speaker 2: August where you're like, oh, we're eliminated and they playing
- 22:11Speaker 2: out the string. That's right, go to the seventh game. Obviously,
- 22:14Speaker 2: want to win, but that's a good thing for sure.
- 22:16Speaker 2: What does Toronto do that makes everything so special? What
- 22:20Speaker 2: what does the organization do what's the city do because
- 22:23Speaker 2: Max Max's daughter, right, we're dying to come back. Chris Bassett,
- 22:27Speaker 2: They everyone he talked to was like, oh, man, I
- 22:29Speaker 2: loved it in Toronto. I remember Mark Burley back in
- 22:31Speaker 2: the day when he was there. I was like, I
- 22:33Speaker 2: loved it. So from the outside, everyone's like, ooh, Toronto,
- 22:36Speaker 2: it's a pain in the butt. You got to go
- 22:37Speaker 2: through customs and it's a different country and all that.
- 22:40Speaker 2: But then guys go play there and they absolutely love it.
- 22:43Speaker 2: So explain to people out there what Toronto does to
- 22:45Speaker 2: make it such a great place.
- 22:47Speaker 9: Yeah, well, I think one obviously of one team that
- 22:50Speaker 9: represents an entire country, So that's kind of unique in
- 22:52Speaker 9: its own right. You know, like I played with the
- 22:55Speaker 9: Giants and right across the Bay Days, so you're kind
- 22:58Speaker 9: of fighting for fighting for that. I guess fan base,
- 23:03Speaker 9: you know, you're kind of sharing a fan base. And yeah,
- 23:06Speaker 9: I think Toronto is a city that really loves its athletes.
- 23:11Speaker 9: You know, they really love their athletes, and it's a
- 23:14Speaker 9: sports city. They love watching their team, they love supporting
- 23:17Speaker 9: their team. And if you can be a good guy
- 23:20Speaker 9: and be good at your job, you know they're gonna
- 23:23Speaker 9: they're gonna love you there and then obviously I think
- 23:26Speaker 9: our team last year was pretty easy to like. So
- 23:30Speaker 9: but you know, outside of that, outside of things that
- 23:33Speaker 9: you get from the city, I would say the organization
- 23:35Speaker 9: has just done an incredible job at putting the guys first.
- 23:39Speaker 9: And when I say that, it means is the family first.
- 23:42Speaker 8: The wives.
- 23:43Speaker 9: You know, they've really kind of done everything they possibly
- 23:45Speaker 9: can to make life as easy as possible for people
- 23:49Speaker 9: who are living in another country and don't know too
- 23:51Speaker 9: many people. So you know, whether that's helping out the
- 23:55Speaker 9: new guys when they get traded over at the deadline,
- 23:57Speaker 9: to kind of get them situated. You know, there's a
- 24:01Speaker 9: couple wives that have kind of taken the you know,
- 24:07Speaker 9: taking that superiority, I guess, and planning things. And I
- 24:11Speaker 9: mean I thought the wives had more fun than the
- 24:13Speaker 9: posts than anybody else. You know, they were having the
- 24:16Speaker 9: time of their lives and you know, one big party
- 24:20Speaker 9: every single day.
- 24:20Speaker 8: And I think when you can.
- 24:22Speaker 9: Keep the wives and the kids happy, I think the
- 24:25Speaker 9: guys are going to be more inclined to be happy
- 24:29Speaker 9: on a on a daily basis.
- 24:32Speaker 5: All right, So what would it mean if they came
- 24:34Speaker 5: to you in the end of spring here and offered
- 24:36Speaker 5: you an extension, because really they can't give you a
- 24:39Speaker 5: team deal because you've given them a discount for these
- 24:43Speaker 5: last this five year contract they've given them. What would
- 24:46Speaker 5: it mean to you if they came to you with
- 24:48Speaker 5: an extension or have they already talked about it?
- 24:52Speaker 9: Yeah, you know that's something we really haven't crossed that
- 24:54Speaker 9: path yet or that bridge yet. You know, I would
- 24:58Speaker 9: love to continue to play for the IS. I love
- 25:00Speaker 9: this organization, I love the city. For me being here
- 25:04Speaker 9: as long as I have, it's been cool to see
- 25:07Speaker 9: the organization grow, see SKIP grow as a manager. You know,
- 25:13Speaker 9: there's just a lot of things. My kids have grown
- 25:15Speaker 9: in Toronto, So there's a lot of a lot of
- 25:18Speaker 9: things to like, you know, when you're looking from the
- 25:20Speaker 9: outside looking in at where you would want to play.
- 25:23Speaker 9: I mean, I don't think there's anything bad you can
- 25:26Speaker 9: say about Toronto besides the fact that it's in another country,
- 25:29Speaker 9: you know, and if you can kind of get past that,
- 25:31Speaker 9: then there's a lot to love. And me and my
- 25:35Speaker 9: wife we really enjoyed our time here. But you know,
- 25:37Speaker 9: I also understand it's a business, and so you know,
- 25:41Speaker 9: it's not always about what everybody wants, and sometimes it
- 25:45Speaker 9: kind of goes back to just what makes sense for
- 25:48Speaker 9: both sides, and so you know, we'll see what happens.
- 25:52Speaker 9: And more so just focused on this year and trying
- 25:55Speaker 9: to get back to a World Series again.
- 25:58Speaker 5: There's got to be There's one thing that I know
- 25:59Speaker 5: you can't like that much. Your spring training site is
- 26:03Speaker 5: not where the stadium is. Everything they do so perfectly.
- 26:07Speaker 5: The new site is awesome. I grew up a Blue Jay,
- 26:10Speaker 5: so I understand that travel across.
- 26:13Speaker 6: Could they figure that out and would that be just
- 26:15Speaker 6: a little bit better?
- 26:18Speaker 9: I mean, yeah, it would it would you know, they
- 26:20Speaker 9: just need to build a tunnel. I think it's only
- 26:22Speaker 9: like two miles away, so you know, we just need
- 26:25Speaker 9: a tunnel underground.
- 26:27Speaker 3: No.
- 26:27Speaker 9: But I mean if that's the biggest thing that you
- 26:30Speaker 9: can say that's bad about, you know, our setup, then
- 26:34Speaker 9: then I'll take that. You know, I've been in a
- 26:37Speaker 9: lot of organizations, a lot of spring training complexes, and
- 26:41Speaker 9: I mean this is by far the nicest I've ever
- 26:43Speaker 9: been in. And so you know, our covered agility is
- 26:48Speaker 9: great for on rainy days. You know, like whatever you
- 26:51Speaker 9: need player development wise.
- 26:54Speaker 8: We have it here.
- 26:55Speaker 9: So you know, we're very blessed to having an organization
- 26:59Speaker 9: in a front off that kind of puts the players first.
- 27:02Speaker 2: Are you a top deck bus guy or a lower
- 27:05Speaker 2: because you guys have the double decker bus that drives
- 27:07Speaker 2: you over there, So are you on the top or
- 27:08Speaker 2: the lower deck on the bus.
- 27:10Speaker 9: I don't think i've seen a double decker bus for
- 27:13Speaker 9: the minor league guys.
- 27:14Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 27:14Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't know. I haven't been on the bus.
- 27:16Speaker 3: I'll be honest.
- 27:17Speaker 8: Drive over yeah, I usually drive. Okay, Yeah. Limited parking
- 27:21Speaker 8: spots though, Oh go early.
- 27:25Speaker 3: Oh they don't save one for you?
- 27:27Speaker 8: No, no, no.
- 27:28Speaker 3: You're not. I'm opening gay starter, Kevin go No.
- 27:30Speaker 8: Just Ross and Shapiro. They're the only ones who have
- 27:33Speaker 8: got their own wore.
- 27:34Speaker 2: Wow, hopefully we're going to be joined. We're going to
- 27:38Speaker 2: talk to Shapiro, so hopefully we'll get that out there. Yeah,
- 27:42Speaker 2: and ask him why you don't have your own spot
- 27:43Speaker 2: or Vlad doesn't have a spot with all the money
- 27:45Speaker 2: he's making.
- 27:46Speaker 8: Yeah, gladd he definitely needs one.
- 27:50Speaker 2: Tray you savage your lockers next to him in the
- 27:52Speaker 2: clubhouse in there? What do you tell him about being
- 27:54Speaker 2: ready for a whole year? Because we were joking earlier.
- 27:56Speaker 2: What do you say you had three three starts before
- 27:59Speaker 2: the postseason and now he's with like nine starts counting
- 28:02Speaker 2: the postseason something like that. What do you tell him, hey,
- 28:04Speaker 2: be ready for thirty starts? How do you how do
- 28:06Speaker 2: you tell a young guy like that to be ready
- 28:08Speaker 2: for that?
- 28:09Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 28:09Speaker 9: I mean to be honest, we really haven't talked too
- 28:13Speaker 9: much about it. You know, he's still building up. I
- 28:17Speaker 9: know early in spring is kind of arm wasn't bouncing
- 28:20Speaker 9: back the way he wanted. You know, he's a young
- 28:23Speaker 9: kid that is really uh, you know, obviously he's young,
- 28:26Speaker 9: but you talk to him and you wouldn't you wouldn't
- 28:29Speaker 9: think that. You know, he kind of has a rhyme
- 28:32Speaker 9: for reason for everything he's doing, and you know, really
- 28:36Speaker 9: smart when it comes to knowing his strengths, what he
- 28:39Speaker 9: needs to do.
- 28:39Speaker 8: In the weight room.
- 28:40Speaker 9: So, you know, whereas maybe a normal young guy I
- 28:43Speaker 9: would probably talk to and be like, hey, you know,
- 28:46Speaker 9: we probably need to monitor your bullpens and how much
- 28:49Speaker 9: we're throwing, he's kind of already thought about that. So
- 28:52Speaker 9: there's not too much that you need to really kind
- 28:54Speaker 9: of divulge into him. But yeah, you know, he's gonna
- 29:00Speaker 9: go through some ups and downs. You know, it's just
- 29:02Speaker 9: normal as a starting pitcher in this league. You know,
- 29:05Speaker 9: teams are going to make adjustments. Hitting coaches are going
- 29:07Speaker 9: to make adjustments.
- 29:10Speaker 8: You know.
- 29:10Speaker 9: I hope he's as dominant as he was in the
- 29:12Speaker 9: postseason for his whole career of being amazing, he'd be
- 29:15Speaker 9: a Hall of Famer. But he's gonna go through some
- 29:17Speaker 9: ups and downs, And so it's more so just kind
- 29:19Speaker 9: of about trying to be there for his downs and
- 29:23Speaker 9: and kind of let him know that, you know, the
- 29:26Speaker 9: ups are right around the corner or whatever it is.
