- 0:00Hello. I chased the weasel around the cobbler's
- 0:03bench. But stuff still happened. So what's up?
- 0:08It's been a very normal go of it for the U .S.
- 0:11government. Let's just take a look at some of
- 0:12the things that are going on around our esteemed
- 0:15administration. We'll start with some aerial
- 0:17acrobatics. Last week, the FAA just randomly
- 0:20announced a 10 -day closure of the airspace around
- 0:24El Paso. El Paso, Texas. It's on the border,
- 0:28like the restaurant. And no one knew what the
- 0:30hell was the reasoning for this. Like it was
- 0:32just a sudden closure. 10 days. No air travel.
- 0:36Out of El Paso, sorry guys. And then that 10
- 0:38days ended a few hours later. They were like,
- 0:40so about that 10 day airspace closure, nevermind.
- 0:45Why did we do it? The government was asked why.
- 0:49They didn't have a good answer. First we were
- 0:51told that there was some kind of security threat.
- 0:54Then we were told that they shot down a cartel
- 0:57drone. Then we learned it was a balloon, like
- 0:59from a party. It turns out the US military used
- 1:01an anti -drone laser against a balloon and didn't
- 1:04tell the FAA about it. So the FAA was like, um,
- 1:08there's anti -drone lasers being fired in our
- 1:10airspace, we should shut this down. But then
- 1:13when the FAA was asked, they were like, we don't
- 1:14fucking know what's going on. And then the DoD
- 1:17was like, we didn't shoot a balloon down, what
- 1:19are you talking about? Very competent stuff all
- 1:21around. But let's move on, we've got a lot of
- 1:23stuff to get through. Hey Google, narc on me.
- 1:27Investigative journalists from whatever's left
- 1:29of the Washington Post found the Department of
- 1:31Homeland Security is pressuring Google to give
- 1:34over user information on a whim. A 67 -year -old
- 1:37man from outside Philadelphia sent an email to
- 1:40the Department of Homeland Security pleading
- 1:42with them to be lenient on a deportation case
- 1:45that he had read about in the news. Quite literally
- 1:47just a citizen emailing a public office saying,
- 1:51hey, I'm voicing my opinion here. They then subpoenaed
- 1:55his Google account. The man opened his email
- 1:57and found a notification from Google that said,
- 1:59hey, just so's you know, we just gave your account
- 2:02information to the Department of Homeland Security
- 2:04after they sent us a subpoena. And no, we're
- 2:06not gonna give you a copy of it. So, from receiving
- 2:08an email from this guy, the Department of Homeland
- 2:09Security drew up a subpoena, didn't say anything
- 2:13to the guy, sent it to Google, got his account
- 2:15information, and he had no way to stop this from
- 2:18happening. The information that they handed over
- 2:20included his home address, and his location history,
- 2:23and his contacts. And then... DHS agents showed
- 2:27up at his house to question him until they ultimately
- 2:30found that he didn't do anything wrong, because
- 2:32obviously, as a reminder, with any corporate
- 2:35tech infrastructure, that includes Google, that
- 2:37includes Google Docs, do not use it for anything
- 2:40that you wouldn't be comfortable shouting into
- 2:43your local police precinct. This is exactly why.
- 2:45We've got more stuff, though. Great jobs, y 'all.
- 2:48Great jobs all around. Got the jobs report coming
- 2:50in, coming in hot. Got new jobs, like 80 ,000
- 2:53new jobs. from non -farm payrolls. Amazing. Good
- 2:56job, guys. Over the last year, we lost almost
- 2:59900 ,000 jobs. So obviously the jobs report is
- 3:02hard to trust because Trump fired the person
- 3:04who was in charge of producing the jobs reports.
- 3:07because he didn't like the numbers. And obviously
- 3:10we can't trust that. And also, also, it doesn't
- 3:12take an advanced economics degree to look around
- 3:14at the current U .S. landscape for the job market
- 3:17and assess that it blows. It's pretty frequent
- 3:20for jobs reports to have these big corrections.
- 3:23What we saw was the month come in for the jobs
- 3:25report and then a correction for about a year
- 3:28long period with more data to actually use as
- 3:31inputs to get actual accurate numbers. Whether
- 3:34or not those numbers are accurate still, we don't
- 3:36know. but they say that we lost about 900 ,000
- 3:38jobs in the past year, which very, very much
- 3:41tracks. So yeah, there's that. We're going into
- 3:44a shutdown. Again, kind of, partially. The US
- 3:47government is shutting down the Department of
- 3:49Homeland Security. Fucking rejoice, everyone.
- 3:52Democrats and Republicans did not manage to come
- 3:53to an agreement to pass a budget for DHS, whose
- 3:56budget is through the fucking roof right now
- 3:59because they wanted to fund concentration camps.
- 4:01Cool cool stuff guys in the midst of the whole
- 4:04ice rounding people up into detention camps and
- 4:06killing citizens on the street thing The Democrats
- 4:09have said they want to reform ice and and they're
- 4:12not gonna they're not gonna fund to the DHS Until
- 4:15they get common -sense reforms for ice Also abolishing
- 4:19ice is the popular position now. Anyway, they
- 4:22they did not do that They didn't fund it and
- 4:26now the DHS is closed For how long? I don't know.
- 4:28But it's not like a full -scale government shutdown.
- 4:30It's not like everything is going away. It's
- 4:32just subdivisions of DHS. Except for the TSA.
- 4:36It is at this point that I'm realizing that if
- 4:37you're not a member of the freest country in
- 4:39the world, you have no idea what the fuck I'm
- 4:41saying. Department of Homeland Security. It's
- 4:43the people who run border control. And the TSA
- 4:45is airport security. The TSA is apparently mostly
- 4:48considered essential, so they're largely going
- 4:50to be in operation unchanged. So no worries there.
- 4:53But also, TSA is fucking bullshit too, so. How
- 4:57could I forget? This should have been the headline.
- 5:00The Dow is over 50 ,000. or at least it was recently,
- 5:05Pam Bondi was testifying in front of Congress,
- 5:07being grilled about a whole bunch of things,
- 5:09including the Epstein case. The hearing started
- 5:11off ridiculous and just continued to get more
- 5:14so, to the point that we now have historic record
- 5:17of a sitting attorney general of the United States
- 5:20of America saying to a representative of Congress,
- 5:24and I quote, you're a washed up loser lawyer.
- 5:28Bondi was essentially being asked questions that
- 5:30she couldn't answer, such as, why are you protecting
- 5:32pedophiles? And she didn't want to say because.
- 5:35So instead she just went into full -on deflection
- 5:37mode, to the point that she started saying just
- 5:39absurd shit. For example, the Dow is over 50
- 5:44,000, and that's what we should be talking about.
- 5:47The head of the justice system in the United
- 5:50States of America was like, why are you asking
- 5:52me questions about justice? We should be talking
- 5:55about the stock market doing well. Not a whole
- 5:58lot came from this, aside from just a bunch of
- 6:00screaming and everybody trying to get clips for
- 6:02social media, but God damn, Pam Bondi was a mess
- 6:06in this hearing. But you know what wasn't a mess?
- 6:09The Dow. It was over 50 ,000. For those who don't
- 6:11know, the Dow is like a common reference point
- 6:14index of the stock market. Finance stuff. We're
- 6:19not done with just this fucking clown car of
- 6:21an administration because we need to talk about
- 6:23RFK Jr.'s cocaine toilet. Robert F. Kennedy Jr.,
- 6:26the somehow head of Health and Human Services
- 6:28in the United States of America, I cannot believe
- 6:32that statement. He went on Theo Von's podcast
- 6:35and said that he's not afraid of germs because
- 6:38he did cocaine off of a toilet seat. I just want
- 6:41to fact -check real quick. This is actually the
- 6:44most relatable that RFK has ever been. I'm not
- 6:46a cocaine off the toilet seat kind of guy myself,
- 6:49personally. But I get the energy. I understand
- 6:53it. But here's the thing. That's not the kind
- 6:55of energy that I want from the head of Health
- 6:57and Human Services. overseeing multiple measles
- 7:00outbreaks, while advocating against getting the
- 7:03measles vaccine. Or vaccines. A few health agencies
- 7:07are calling for him to resign. That's not gonna
- 7:09happen. But hey, bring back having elected officials
- 7:13not talking about their cocaine usage off of
- 7:17a toilet, and then turning around and setting
- 7:20our health policy. We've got more! We're still
- 7:23going! While all of this is going on, over the
- 7:25past four weeks there's been a massive sewage
- 7:27spill in the surrounding area around Washington
- 7:30D .C., as sewage has been pouring into the C
- 7:32&O Canal and Potomac River. At time of recording,
- 7:35there's been an estimated 240 million gallons
- 7:37of raw sewage that's made its way into the Potomac,
- 7:40and apparently was made worse by a bit of the
- 7:43equipment that they've been using to try to clean
- 7:44everything up, getting destroyed by a huge wad
- 7:47of flushed wipes. Do not flush wipes, especially
- 7:50if they say flushable. They're not. At time of
- 7:52recording, there's not an issue with potable
- 7:54water from municipal systems, but they do say,
- 7:57hey, maybe don't go swimming in the sewage. And
- 8:00also, it smells pretty bad around the sewage,
- 8:02apparently. Which I would assume this is an honestly
- 8:05massive ecological disaster, and the cleanup
- 8:07is expected to take basically the rest of the
- 8:10year at least. Last thing for government, and
- 8:12I did cut a few things for time, we're also posturing
- 8:15for war with Iran, still, again. Trump has sent
- 8:18a second aircraft carrier to intimidate Iran
- 8:21during talks about nuclear stuff and Israel.
- 8:25The same fucking things that we're always talking
- 8:27to them about. And bombing them about. The things
- 8:31that we're always bombing them about too. There's
- 8:33a lot of rhetoric going around about free Iran
- 8:35and like, yes, in the context of what the people
- 8:38there want. I don't think it's the United States
- 8:40job to go in and do regime change in Iran. Again,
- 8:45again. So that's just a quick summary of some
- 8:46of the quirky little things that our little goobers
- 8:49are up to these days. I don't even know anymore.
- 8:52Let's move on. Artificial intelligence. Do I
- 8:56get money now? I said the words. You may have
- 8:58heard that there's a few companies out there
- 9:00trying to do AI stuff. They're advertising it
- 9:03a little bit. But I want to talk through the
- 9:05growing trend of these companies talking about
- 9:07their products as if it's some massive threat.
- 9:11to humanity and an existential crisis for the
- 9:14world. I wanna start real quick by just saying,
- 9:16when I say AI, I'm not actually referring to
- 9:20real conscious intelligence. It's just a shorthand
- 9:23to refer to these things that we're all kind
- 9:26of just labeling AI at this point. I hate that
- 9:29this stuff is called AI because it's not intelligence,
- 9:32but it's just easier to say AI. So let's just
- 9:34agree on that. OpenAI and Anthropic. They are
- 9:37the creators of ChatGPT and Claude respectively,
- 9:41two of the biggest names in the AI space right
- 9:43now. Both of these companies are racing to an
- 9:45IPO. That's when a company is listed on the stock
- 9:47market and they get a huge payday. Think about
- 9:50how much money is currently flying around in
- 9:53all the AI spaces and then think about how much
- 9:56money they have to gain from going to market
- 9:59and letting people buy in from the public. But
- 10:02also also think about the risk of not being able
- 10:06to deliver on all of the promises that they've
- 10:08made. And so if you want to cash out, you got
- 10:11to be the first one to get to the market, because
- 10:13if you're the second and people already know
- 10:15that it's not worth investing in, you're fucked.
- 10:17So we're seeing a whole lot of bluster from these
- 10:20companies about how powerful their systems are,
- 10:23to the point of being an existential threat to
- 10:25humanity, and yet these random CEOs are supposed
- 10:28to be the ones that we trust to manage these
- 10:30things. We've seen engineers thinking that these
- 10:32systems are sentient. Google fired someone over
- 10:34that. Anthropic even put out research about model
- 10:37welfare, you know, worrying about the experiences
- 10:41and emotions of AI models. These are computer
- 10:44programs. This is not consciousness. There are
- 10:47two things happening here. One is marketing,
- 10:49and the other is genuine psychosis. So like a
- 10:52lot of this is marketing. You're gonna see headlines
- 10:54from journalists that either don't understand
- 10:56what they're talking about or took a big paycheck
- 10:58from one of these companies to write a big thing
- 11:00about how there's belief that these AIs are sentient,
- 11:04and it's always in the passive voice. There is
- 11:06belief that there is sentience here, not AI is
- 11:10sentient. It's a really effective marketing strategy
- 11:13if you're trying to get a ton of people to invest
- 11:15in your company. If you say, my company is so
- 11:18important that it cannot be ignored, otherwise
- 11:20it's a threat to humanity. So like, yeah, obvious
- 11:23marketing is super obvious, but the other part
- 11:25of this is kind of scarier. which is the genuine
- 11:29psychosis. You're maybe familiar with the stories
- 11:31of people, like, falling in love with an AI chatbot
- 11:34or being driven to kill themselves by one. OpenAI
- 11:37recently pulled down ChatGPT 4 .0, which is,
- 11:42like, the model that most people were dating.
- 11:45It was the most intimate and, like, malleable
- 11:47model until people were able to craft a partner,
- 11:50like, a character that they formed an unhealthy
- 11:52relationship with. And then the subscription
- 11:55tech service company took down their subscription
- 11:57service, and now people are experiencing genuine
- 12:00pain. That is a form of psychosis on the user's
- 12:04end, but on the other side, some of these developers
- 12:07truly believe that they are building God. It's
- 12:11a religion to them. It's the next phase of humanity.
- 12:14It's their version. of colonizing things. They
- 12:17believe, truly, that they are building the next
- 12:20evolution of humanity, somewhere between Peter
- 12:24Thiel with uploading our consciousness and so
- 12:26it's the intersection of marketing and genuinely
- 12:28profiting off people's confusion and psychosis
- 12:30and that's terrifying and gross. At the end of
- 12:33the day, these are just computer programs. They're
- 12:34just rolling a bunch of dice, taking random numbers,
- 12:37and then checking a big ol' reference sheet,
- 12:40and trying to produce output that's somewhat
- 12:42congruent with the input, both a bunch of randomness
- 12:44thrown in. It's a bit more complicated than that,
- 12:46but ultimately, that's basically all that's happening.
- 12:48It's not making decisions based on anything but
- 12:52prior inputs that it's been given to try to follow.
- 12:55Anyway, uh, it's not intelligence. It's just
- 12:59software. Lightning round! Iraqi Customs detained
- 13:02a package that they thought might have had ancient
- 13:04historical significance. It turns out that it
- 13:06was a collector's edition of Claire Obscura Expedition
- 13:0933. The CEO of Salesforce made a joke about ICE
- 13:13monitoring his employees. His employees were
- 13:16not very happy with that joke. An AI feature
- 13:19update for Notepad on Windows 11 added a massive
- 13:23security vulnerability. Yet again, it seems like
- 13:25Omega 3 is very good for you. It now seems like
- 13:28there's a link between Omega 3 and a reduced
- 13:30chance of early onset dementia. MrBeast acquired
- 13:34a banking app. MrBanks. Not content with just
- 13:37staying in the US, North London now has an outbreak
- 13:40of measles with at least 60 children in the area
- 13:43being infected. After 88 years, Gallup will no
- 13:46longer track presidential approval rating. They
- 13:48say this has nothing to do with political pressure
- 13:50from the presidency. And finally for today, it's
- 13:52Britney, bitch, as Britney Spears has sold the
- 13:55license to all of her music for about $200 million.
- 13:58I am also selling the license to all of my music
- 14:01for $200 million, if anyone's interested. Thank
- 14:04you so much for listening to today's episode
- 14:05of Stuff Keeps Happening. Head to skh .news for
- 14:08sources, bonus content, and the entire library
- 14:12of Britney Spears music, because I bought the
- 14:15license. My name is Endeavorance. We'll talk
- 14:17again soon. Take care and be well.
