[SPEAKER_03]: Practice practice practice practice practice.
• 2:41
[SPEAKER_03]: And when we ran it in the game, it happened exactly like we practiced.

[SPEAKER_03]: He had us prepared for our situations and it showed in one of the biggest moments in our history.
• 2:55
[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back to the fish tank presented by Van Horn Law Group and Casabella design group Seth Levitt and the toughest podcast or damn reno ever played with.
• 3:04
[SPEAKER_01]: He is O. J. McDuffie juice wide out after wide out.
• 3:07
[SPEAKER_01]: You must be doing the showbooking here.
• 3:10
[SPEAKER_01]: I think we're in the right room again.
• 3:11
  [SPEAKER_05]: Always big Seth.
• 3:12
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, I always say this in our guest over here this now for the first time.
• 3:16
[SPEAKER_05]: Probably there should be eleven wide outs when the shoot it at a time.
• 3:21
[SPEAKER_05]: Always eleven wide outs on the field of the time you want to score we block for anybody you know me, but we're gonna score a lot of points big Seth just get in the right hands at the right time.
• 3:29
[SPEAKER_01]: You know me get the best athletes on the field, huh?
• 3:33
  [SPEAKER_01]: There it is.
• 3:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, speaking of great athletes and wide outs, Kenny still's diving in the fish tank for the first time in man.
• 3:39
  [SPEAKER_01]: Kenny.
• 3:39
[SPEAKER_01]: We have wanted to talk to you for a minute.
• 3:41
  [SPEAKER_01]: How you feeling?
• 3:42
  [SPEAKER_01]: I'm feeling great man.
• 3:42
  [SPEAKER_01]: I appreciate you.
• 3:43
[SPEAKER_01]: I have no brainer for us.
• 3:50
[SPEAKER_05]: We cannot wait to talk to you, honestly, man, because, you know, the wide-out thing is one thing, man.
• 3:55
[SPEAKER_05]: We know what a, you know, what a hell of a player and a person you were when you were down in South Florida, man.
• 4:02
[SPEAKER_05]: So we're pumped for this for sure.
• 4:03
  [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
• 4:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and so juice like I sent Kenny a text and he's always been really good communicating But I never know where in the world my man's gonna be so he's like of course he's like all right As soon as I get back in the country, let's knock it out and so they're all right.
• 4:18
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's go find where Kenny is now kind of the adventures of Kenny stills jump on Instagram
• 4:23
[SPEAKER_01]: And bro, you're, you're living your best life, man.
• 4:26
[SPEAKER_01]: So like, there's photos of him on a surfboard juice.
• 4:29
[SPEAKER_01]: And they look like the right out of surfer magazine from like the seventies or something.
• 4:34
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's, I don't know enough about surfing, but whatever he was doing, he looked like, you talk about riding a bike.
• 4:39
[SPEAKER_01]: He definitely looked like you knew what he was doing there.
• 4:41
[SPEAKER_01]: And you're an Indonesia surfing.
• 4:43
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to miss pronounced.
• 4:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Can you tell me the name of the beach that you were at in Indonesia?
• 4:47
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, this was, we were at Soraka Beach in Nias.
• 4:51
[SPEAKER_01]: And from, you know, I did a little Google search.
• 4:53
[SPEAKER_01]: That's supposed to be like surfers paradise.
• 4:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Like that's if you're a real surfer and they said the waves can get intense over there.
• 5:01
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you just like wake up one day and say, man, I want to go to Soraka Beach.
• 5:05
  [SPEAKER_01]: Let's book a flight and let's go.
• 5:10
[SPEAKER_03]: Around, like, twenty nineteen when I was still playing in Houston, met a person who kind of inspired me to start going towards things that I was afraid of.
• 5:18
[SPEAKER_03]: A lot of people don't know this, you know, I grew up in San Diego.
• 5:20
[SPEAKER_03]: We know I'm close to the beach.
• 5:22
[SPEAKER_03]: And people assume that we grew up all surfing.
• 5:25
[SPEAKER_03]: But I mean, you know, like most like I'm around people go to the beach where fully closed.
• 5:29
[SPEAKER_03]: right now we're enjoying the scenery but you know swimming and surfing that's not really our thing you know and so I got in the water from time to time as a kid but I never went past the break you know I was afraid if I couldn't touch the sand underneath me in the water then you know I started to get anxious and scared and so yeah so twenty nineteen I started going towards the things that made me fearful and and the ocean was one of those things and surfing was on the other side of that fear so okay if I can if I can conquer this fear of the ocean then I can get out there and surf and so
• 5:59
[SPEAKER_03]: Since about twenty twenty I've been, you know, trying here and there.
• 6:04
[SPEAKER_03]: But this past year, it's probably been the most time that I've spent in the water and I've been out in Bali and Indonesia.
• 6:11
[SPEAKER_03]: And it just happened to be that the instructor that I've been working with is from Nias.
• 6:16
[SPEAKER_03]: And so he's always telling us you guys got to come to Nias, you guys got to come.
• 6:20
[SPEAKER_03]: And my level was finally getting, you know, better and good enough to go out there and try this more challenging way.
• 6:27
[SPEAKER_05]: And so there was, you know, mixed up because that's because athletes are the, the wide receivers of the best athletes in the world.
• 6:33
[SPEAKER_05]: We can, whatever you, whatever challenge you give us, we got it.
• 6:36
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, I mean, we got it.
• 6:37
[SPEAKER_05]: Sometimes our height keeps us from doing other things like basketball at a, you know, at a higher level, but you know, there's no better athletes on football fields than the wide-outs.
• 6:46
  [SPEAKER_01]: I have heard this.
• 6:47
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, I have heard this on the show before.
• 6:49
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's funny, man, when you talk about, because you're right, Kenny, like in my mind, I'm like, oh, of course he serves and he's a cali kid.
• 6:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Like that's what you know, then what you just said, we just had a Raheem most hurt on as well.
• 7:02
[SPEAKER_01]: And Raheem was I, I didn't know he got like a billabong contract offer at fourteen years old and old thing.
• 7:07
[SPEAKER_01]: And you stopped the interview.
• 7:08
[SPEAKER_01]: He was like, we don't, we don't do that.
• 7:10
  [SPEAKER_01]: We don't do that.
• 7:11
  [SPEAKER_01]: We don't do that.
• 7:12
  [SPEAKER_01]: We don't do that.
• 7:12
  [SPEAKER_01]: We don't do that.
• 7:13
  [SPEAKER_03]: We don't do that.
• 7:14
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, we don't do that.
• 7:14
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
• 7:15
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no, it was huge for me, man, just a couple other things.
• 7:18
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I got scuba certified, you know, I did some skydiving and bungee jumping, like things that really truly made me afraid.
• 7:27
[SPEAKER_03]: It was like I had to go towards them and start building resilience again as an adult.
• 7:31
[SPEAKER_03]: And I say all the time to people that surfing and golf are the two hardest sports that I've learned.
• 7:38
  [SPEAKER_03]: by far.
• 7:38
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, surfing is challenging not just because I was afraid of the water, but because there's so many little things that go into it to catching wave.
• 7:46
[SPEAKER_03]: And reading the wave, every wave is different.
• 7:50
[SPEAKER_03]: And you've got to get up on the board.
• 7:53
[SPEAKER_03]: You've got to have balance.
• 7:54
[SPEAKER_03]: You've got to learn how to move the board.
• 7:56
[SPEAKER_03]: There's so many things happening at once that it's keeping me occupied.
• 8:00
[SPEAKER_03]: And it's humbling to shut out me.
• 8:02
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no doubt about it, man.
• 8:04
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, that's so dope, man.
• 8:05
  [SPEAKER_05]: That's so dope, man.
• 8:06
[SPEAKER_05]: And we definitely want to talk more about the travels and all these different aspects of your life, a way for football that
• 8:15
[SPEAKER_05]: Really, honestly, man, make you a really interesting dude.
• 8:18
[SPEAKER_05]: Football is what brought us all together here, so I'm going to lean back into that a little bit.
• 8:23
[SPEAKER_05]: It actually, you know, learn about how your football journey began.
• 8:26
  [SPEAKER_05]: I felt like
• 8:28
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, I could connect with you in your story, Kenny.
• 8:31
[SPEAKER_05]: You said that you were a really angry kid, a pessimistic kid, and that football was a place where you could kind of channel that anger.
• 8:39
[SPEAKER_05]: And, and from what we understand, you know, as you began to see what that you're going to be really good.
• 8:45
[SPEAKER_05]: Obviously you ended up being really, really good at that sport.
• 8:47
[SPEAKER_05]: Your whole focus was that you utilized football to build a better life for your mom.
• 8:52
[SPEAKER_05]: Kind of like, you know, for me, that's what I was thinking too.
• 8:54
[SPEAKER_05]: And that sounds exactly like what I was doing.
• 8:56
[SPEAKER_05]: Football for me was a way to get my mom, give my mom a better life and something better than what we grew up.
• 9:04
  [SPEAKER_05]: And I love that.
• 9:06
[SPEAKER_05]: Can you talk about those emotions you were dealing with as a child and then you're dry through a five-year family with, you know, me throughout your football career.
• 9:14
[SPEAKER_05]: You got to provide for your family.
• 9:15
  [SPEAKER_05]: Talk about that part.
• 9:17
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I was really lucky.
• 9:19
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I'm one of seven or one of eight.
• 9:21
[SPEAKER_03]: So I have seven siblings, but my mom had five children.
• 9:24
[SPEAKER_03]: I was the baby of her kids and we spread from what I'm thirty three all the way to my oldest sister's forty four.
• 9:32
[SPEAKER_03]: So three three girls two boys and yeah, she just she was always in these really toxic relationships and never I never really saw someone like take care of her and treated right and
• 9:46
[SPEAKER_03]: Throughout a lot of my childhood, we didn't really have a good relationship, you know, her and I, uh, butt heads a ton because she was a disciplinarian and I didn't like rules.
• 9:55
[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, she was the owner of that.
• 9:58
[SPEAKER_03]: She was in line, but also just like, you know, she had some inconsistencies in the way that she raised me, you know, she, you know, had this funky relationship with alcohol, you know, and that kind of made things challenging for us in our relationship.
• 10:13
[SPEAKER_03]: And so when I was in high school, I actually got caught bringing weed to school.
• 10:17
[SPEAKER_03]: And in the district that I went to school and, you know, there was, there was a lot of other drug problems.
• 10:24
  [SPEAKER_03]: So marijuana wasn't a big issue.
• 10:26
[SPEAKER_03]: And so it was kind of a slap on the wrist.
• 10:27
[SPEAKER_03]: You get like in school suspension.
• 10:29
[SPEAKER_03]: And then, you know, it's never goes on your record.
• 10:31
[SPEAKER_03]: It was no big deal.
• 10:32
[SPEAKER_03]: And when that happened, my parents, she didn't know that I was smoking weed or that I had been drinking alcohol or doing anything that I was doing.
• 10:40
[SPEAKER_03]: She thought I was just like a pure bread athlete.
• 10:43
[SPEAKER_03]: And so she's like, you know what's going on?
• 10:45
[SPEAKER_03]: She thought I was like going off the deep end or like something was wrong.
• 10:47
[SPEAKER_03]: But this had been something, you know, part of my behavior for a couple years.
• 10:51
[SPEAKER_03]: And you know, I always kept the priorities, the priorities football was always the main thing for me.
• 10:56
[SPEAKER_03]: But you know, we're a teenage kid, so we're having fun.
• 10:58
[SPEAKER_03]: And so at that point when I got in trouble, she sat me down and we had this like real hard to heart for the first time.
• 11:04
[SPEAKER_03]: And she opened up to me about, you know, some of the relationships that she had had.
• 11:08
[SPEAKER_03]: and why she was the way that she was.
• 11:10
[SPEAKER_03]: And for the first time, I saw her as a human.
• 11:12
  [SPEAKER_03]: That's why I was a person.
• 11:13
[SPEAKER_03]: It wasn't just this person that was like, always telling me what to do and always trying to keep me in line.
• 11:18
[SPEAKER_03]: She was someone that had her own struggle, that had her own story.
• 11:22
[SPEAKER_03]: And I just, the switch flipped and I just gained so much more respect for her.
• 11:27
[SPEAKER_03]: And from that moment on, it was like, damn, I have this talent in this skill set to be able to change my family's life for generations to come and hurt her life.
• 11:38
[SPEAKER_03]: And so she became the motivation for everything for me, you know.
• 11:41
[SPEAKER_03]: And so you start going to training, going to work out, you get to college, you know, stuff becomes hard, you're like, oh, I want to give up.
• 11:48
  [SPEAKER_03]: You want to quit.
• 11:48
  [SPEAKER_03]: This isn't fun.
• 11:49
[SPEAKER_03]: This is what I thought it was going to be.
• 11:51
[SPEAKER_03]: And I just started to think about, you know, the stories that she told me and the things that she had been through and how we always had a roof over her head.
• 11:57
[SPEAKER_03]: We always had food to eat.
• 11:59
[SPEAKER_03]: And that made it so I can never quit that I can never give up.
• 12:04
[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, that was really it.
• 12:05
[SPEAKER_03]: And it was just like, you know, something happened.
• 12:07
[SPEAKER_03]: Your teens, you think you know everything.
• 12:10
  [SPEAKER_03]: And obviously you don't.
• 12:12
[SPEAKER_03]: And it's just, I always talk to parents now of like single parent, you know, single parent kids.
• 12:17
[SPEAKER_03]: And it's just like the more transparent and real and honest you can be with your kids, the more they're gonna respect you.
• 12:23
[SPEAKER_03]: They might not respect you now, but they're gonna respect you down the line.
• 12:26
[SPEAKER_03]: They'll become adults and they get their out on their own and they realize how hard it is.
• 12:31
[SPEAKER_03]: to do some of the things, you know, that single parents have to do that, parents have to do in general and so yeah.
• 12:36
[SPEAKER_03]: We just had this turning point and since then, we've been gotten closer and closer.
• 12:41
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, that's amazing, man, because, you know, my mom had me with she was fifteen years old and we kind of grew up together, Kenny, and I, I, I were built against everything she wanted me to do.
• 12:51
[SPEAKER_05]: Every single thing, every movie, everything that, you know,
• 12:55
  [SPEAKER_05]: I didn't like, you know what I mean?
• 12:56
[SPEAKER_05]: She made me do it.
• 12:58
[SPEAKER_05]: Hell, do we both look back or reflect at him?
• 13:00
  [SPEAKER_05]: So they were...
• 13:01
[SPEAKER_05]: They were doing an absolute right thing for us in the best thing for us.
• 13:05
[SPEAKER_05]: Even though they were going through their own personal struggles or they always, you said you're the baby.
• 13:09
[SPEAKER_05]: I was the only child.
• 13:10
[SPEAKER_05]: So that's like being the baby.
• 13:12
[SPEAKER_05]: So I get it, man.
• 13:13
  [SPEAKER_05]: I get it, bro.
• 13:14
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
• 13:14
  [SPEAKER_03]: No, no.
• 13:15
[SPEAKER_03]: I have a ton of respect for my mom and the things that she's been through and like, hey, you know, they're humans.
• 13:19
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, my mom and my dad both of them, you know, they were going through their own things and, you know, my mom started out seventeen with her first child and so
• 13:25
[SPEAKER_03]: There are young adults trying to figure it out.
• 13:27
[SPEAKER_03]: There's no playbook, especially when it's a generational thing, single moms.
• 13:36
[SPEAKER_03]: I have a ton of respect for them and everything that they've done.
• 13:39
[SPEAKER_03]: It's kept me from having kids at a young age and it helps me figure out how to be a better partner and to look for better partners.
• 13:51
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's laid the foundation for everything in my life.
• 13:53
[SPEAKER_05]: And you know, and you speak about sticking to that, you know, when you retired in twenty twenty one, you know, despite like myself, not knowing a Super Bowl or any of some of the personal accolades that, you know, we, we chase, you felt fulfilled because you were able to do for your mom, you know, what you were setting out to do.
• 14:10
[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, that's, that was my goal to like,
• 14:12
[SPEAKER_05]: to make sure my mom was taking care of because of what she had done for me.
• 14:16
[SPEAKER_05]: Talk about that part of it, like, you know, no matter what, we all know football's a team sport.
• 14:20
[SPEAKER_05]: You can't do all this stuff on your own, but help.
• 14:23
  [SPEAKER_05]: Be fulfilled.
• 14:24
[SPEAKER_05]: I was happy that my mom was able to come down to South Florida, you know, live a great life.
• 14:29
  [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, that's really what it's all about.
• 14:32
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, to be able to leave a game without any major surgeries, major injuries, not too many concussions, telling my brains in a good place.
• 14:43
[SPEAKER_03]: And to be able to accomplish what I set out to do, take care of moms.
• 14:46
[SPEAKER_03]: When I really sat back and I thought about it, I did everything that I wanted to as far as what I set out to for my goals.
• 14:55
[SPEAKER_03]: I'd love to have been
• 14:56
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, offensive player the right one of Super Bowl votes have gone to the pro floor had had the accolades and you know, sometimes I try to be a little too realistic about, you know, my skill set or the teams that I was on or you know, those types of things, but
• 15:11
[SPEAKER_03]: And the grand scheme of things, yeah, I'm extremely proud of myself in the way that I carry myself.
• 15:17
[SPEAKER_03]: The person that I became, the teammate that I was, the lessons that I've learned.
• 15:21
[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, ultimately, I did what I came to do, and that's to make sure that mom's just taking care of that she's happy and that, you know, I could be the first person or first man that I think that was in her life to take care of her and treat her the right way.
• 15:35
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, it's tossing.
• 15:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's so good.
• 15:39
[SPEAKER_01]: I hate to, you know, well, I guess we did kind of bookend your career, right?
• 15:42
[SPEAKER_01]: The motivation with football and then retirement.
• 15:44
[SPEAKER_01]: So I hate to kind of fast forward through all of that, but we're a Dolphin's focus podcast, so forgive me for
• 15:50
[SPEAKER_01]: for, you know, fast-forwarding to get, you know, Miami, although juice fast is probably the right word to use here.
• 15:56
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm not kind of still.
• 15:58
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, damn it is.
• 15:59
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, not only were you a blazer on the track and on the field, but things seem to always happen fast for you in football, like you were an instant starter as a true fresh minute Oklahoma.
• 16:10
[SPEAKER_01]: He left the school early right after three years for the draft and then as a rookie with the Saints here starting ten games again and juice as a rookie now five touchdowns average twenty yards per catch that ain't so bad you know for for rookie season but then after just two seasons Kenny in New Orleans that were you know productive
• 16:31
[SPEAKER_01]: You get word that you're being traded to Miami in twenty fifteen to play for I guess what started as Joe Philbans Dolphins ultimately became damn Campbell's dolphins and and then before the lecture.
• 16:42
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, I keep it going right.
• 16:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, you know, Kenny was in the midst of of all of that.
• 16:47
[SPEAKER_01]: What was it like for a young player who had as much success as you did personal success?
• 16:52
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the game, I don't want to say it came easy because that diminishes the work you put in.
• 16:57
[SPEAKER_01]: But clearly, at every step of the way, you were productive even though you were making that next step in the game.
• 17:03
[SPEAKER_01]: But to find out that you had been traded after you thought you would, I imagine you thought you were a contributor, then what was it like entering this new space in this new city with new teammates and all of that change?
• 17:16
[SPEAKER_03]: I look back at my career and the trade to the dolphins was one of the biggest challenges of my career.
• 17:23
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I've been, like you said, in a championship type of program with the Saints, you know, that come off a championship a couple of years before I got there through Breeze, Marcus Colson, Jimmy Graham, all these dudes who were professionals, you know, deep into their career and knew how to handle business.
• 17:41
[SPEAKER_03]: And so I fell in line when I got there.
• 17:44
[SPEAKER_03]: Everything that they did, I did.
• 17:46
[SPEAKER_03]: Just, you know, I knew that if I mimicked everything that they were doing, I had an opportunity to be a great, you know, I had an opportunity to learn how to be a pro.
• 17:55
[SPEAKER_03]: And so when I got traded to Miami, I just, you know, I couldn't, I don't know where I was mentally or emotionally, but I just, I didn't feel the same type of juice in that locker room.
• 18:07
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I met Joe Filbin, you know, he was always harping us about, you know, we couldn't wear hoods in the meeting rooms.
• 18:14
  [SPEAKER_03]: We couldn't have
• 18:14
[SPEAKER_03]: pockets in our in our shorts and like he was worried about all these little details we be doing walkthrough and we are foot had to be on the side line like like you know it was just it just felt like middle school detention or some who I didn't feel like a professional athlete and
• 18:29
[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, and I let that really control, you know, my attitude and my effort.
• 18:36
[SPEAKER_03]: And so very early on, I just, I wasn't into it.
• 18:39
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, for the offseason program, I'm like, I went for two or a couple days.
• 18:42
[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't really, you know, connect with the receiver coach.
• 18:46
[SPEAKER_03]: And so offseason program was voluntary.
• 18:47
  [SPEAKER_03]: I just stopped going.
• 18:48
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, I'm not getting anything out of this.
• 18:50
[SPEAKER_03]: And so that type of attitude, that type of effort really leaked into that season.
• 18:55
[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, I had to have, you know, the worst
• 18:57
[SPEAKER_03]: statistical season of my career until the last year of my career.
• 19:01
[SPEAKER_03]: And so yeah, it was a huge learning lesson for me, you know, because in that offseason,
• 19:06
[SPEAKER_03]: I, you know, had to take a look in the mirror and say, hey, look, bro, like, you know, during this season, I wanted to blame the quarterback.
• 19:12
[SPEAKER_03]: I want to blame the offense line.
• 19:13
[SPEAKER_03]: I want to blame the coaches.
• 19:14
[SPEAKER_03]: It was everybody else's fault, but mine.
• 19:17
[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, regardless of if, you know, I had a better attitude or better effort.
• 19:22
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know if that changes the outcome of that season, because it was very, very rocky.
• 19:28
[SPEAKER_03]: I learned what it means to be a professional in that season by showing up, having a good attitude, giving my best effort and leading by example.
• 19:37
[SPEAKER_03]: If there was nobody on that team to lead and set the standard, then I should have been that guy because I have that characteristic and I know better.
• 19:46
[SPEAKER_03]: I kind of just fell in line with the general
• 19:50
[SPEAKER_03]: uh, frequency or status quo of that team in that year.
• 19:55
[SPEAKER_03]: And uh, it showed, and yeah, I was, I was, I was frustrated and upset with myself at the end of that season.
• 20:01
[SPEAKER_03]: And really looked a mirror and told myself how I had to lock in, and that's what I did when Coach Gase came in.
• 20:07
  [SPEAKER_05]: You know, you know,
• 20:08
[SPEAKER_05]: We obviously, you know, we don't want to talk about everything that's going on in a locker room, Kenny, but it seemed like there was a lot going on.
• 20:15
[SPEAKER_05]: Obviously, you see the changes in the turmoil, things like that, man.
• 20:18
[SPEAKER_05]: I can only imagine how tough a season can be when there's a certain attitude of what would not in a locker room and coming from where you came from, like,
• 20:30
[SPEAKER_05]: Wow, this is not the way, in my opinion, things should be this because I know that I was in some really great locker rooms under Coach Shula under Coach Johnson.
• 20:39
[SPEAKER_05]: But then when you come from one situation where it's to another, it's kind of like, this isn't how things supposed to be.
• 20:44
[SPEAKER_05]: And then you kind of like you said, kind of tune out yourself like, let me just get through this basically.
• 20:49
[SPEAKER_05]: instead of, you know, I'm not, I'm not, no, I got traded here.
• 20:53
[SPEAKER_05]: I didn't choose here really, but hell, man, let me just get through this, make this money go out and do, you know what I mean?
• 20:59
[SPEAKER_05]: So it's got to be a tough situation.
• 21:00
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
• 21:01
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you're young and naive, you know, I was young and naive.
• 21:04
[SPEAKER_03]: And so you assume I assume that every NFL team is run a certain way.
• 21:08
[SPEAKER_03]: Everyone, every NFL team is Super Bowl caliber.
• 21:11
[SPEAKER_03]: Every NFL team invests in the cafeteria.
• 21:13
[SPEAKER_03]: has great training staff, you know, on and on and on.
• 21:16
[SPEAKER_03]: You assume that that's what it's like.
• 21:17
[SPEAKER_03]: And for, you know, the average fan, they don't know that.
• 21:20
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it's based off of how much money and how much, you know, the owner wants to put into the team.
• 21:27
[SPEAKER_03]: And so every place is different.
• 21:28
[SPEAKER_03]: And so yeah, I just I got there and I thought that hey, I knew in New Orleans if I showed up and I did my job, the ball was going to be in the right place.
• 21:35
[SPEAKER_03]: The coordinators were going to get us open and we had an opportunity to win.
• 21:40
[SPEAKER_03]: And so when I got to my him and it wasn't that way, I was confused, you know, like damn, I feel like
• 21:45
[SPEAKER_03]: My little lead coach is like, what have got us more prepared?
• 21:48
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, just like, little, all these things start to happen in your head where you're like, well, this is not how it's supposed to be.
• 21:53
[SPEAKER_03]: And I literally got to a point that I was like, well, I don't know if this is what I want to do anymore.
• 21:57
[SPEAKER_03]: If this is the type of situations that I'm going to be in, like, I need to go work corporate or something.
• 22:03
[SPEAKER_01]: The third year of your career, you were like, maybe football is not for me anymore.
• 22:05
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
• 22:06
[SPEAKER_03]: When you get on a team like that, we were preparing every week with the same game plan that we lost with the week before.
• 22:13
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm like, this, that's the definition of insanity.
• 22:17
  [SPEAKER_02]: Right.
• 22:17
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, and I came from a football family.
• 22:20
[SPEAKER_03]: I've been around football my whole life.
• 22:22
[SPEAKER_03]: You sit me in a meeting room and I'm gonna tell you like coach, that's not gonna work.
• 22:25
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't care how hard we try.
• 22:27
[SPEAKER_03]: And so it got to the point where like you said you're just collecting your chat, trying not to hear her, but that is not, you know, the attitude that I wish that I would have taken, you know, in that time and that point in my career.
• 22:39
[SPEAKER_03]: All I could do was put that behind me and look toward the next year and really lock in, really train.
• 22:45
[SPEAKER_03]: And the next season, I go into Adam's office as soon as he was hired and on my head.
• 22:50
[SPEAKER_03]: Whatever I got to do to help this team win, just let me know.
• 22:54
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I'm all in your corner, putting that stuff from last year behind me.
• 22:58
[SPEAKER_03]: And I spent all all season there getting to know the training staff, getting my body right, getting in shape.
• 23:03
[SPEAKER_01]: and then you know was eventually elected captain and and that's basically what it was like hey I'm going to lead this it's nobody else is going to lead this team I'm going to lead this team and we got to go win you know Kenny and fairness to you you talked about being young and naive and and granted off professional football players or you know it's a young man's game but you you know we talked about kind of the the fast track to getting there what are you twenty one years old I mean because you were a young guy I was kind of shocked
• 23:29
[SPEAKER_01]: When you and I finally started working together, I don't know, you were four or five years in your career, and somehow you were like, twenty-two, twenty-three years old, as like, how is this even possible?
• 23:37
[SPEAKER_01]: So you got there to the same to the young age.
• 23:41
[SPEAKER_01]: So by the time you got to the dolphins, you talk about young and young and naive,
• 23:46
[SPEAKER_03]: you were young like you were really young younger than your peers I think yeah yeah I mean young and age but man I like I said I grew up I grew up yeah I early very early from you know ten eleven twelve years old like I was you know my mom was in and out you know doing her thing and so I
• 24:04
[SPEAKER_03]: I felt the responsibility and I just know what I'm capable of.
• 24:08
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, my dad always talks about too much.
• 24:10
[SPEAKER_03]: He's given much as required.
• 24:12
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, and so I know what I'm supposed to be doing.
• 24:15
[SPEAKER_03]: And I know what I'm capable of and I just have high standards for what I want to accomplish.
• 24:21
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I feel like I should win on every play.
• 24:24
[SPEAKER_03]: I should get the ball on every play.
• 24:25
[SPEAKER_03]: I should score on every play.
• 24:26
[SPEAKER_03]: My team should be winning.
• 24:27
  [SPEAKER_03]: Like, I don't, that's all I know.
• 24:28
  [SPEAKER_03]: I win.
• 24:29
[SPEAKER_03]: I've won at every single level and everything that I've done.
• 24:31
[SPEAKER_03]: And so that's the expectation that I have.
• 24:34
[SPEAKER_03]: When it didn't happen I was I was extremely frustrated and like I said I was like I don't I don't know if this is for me if this is the type of program that I'm gonna be a part of then I gotta go do it somewhere else because It wasn't working for me.
• 24:46
[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, well, it wasn't working for anyone nobody right
• 24:51
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, can you, you know, both you and Seth mentioned Adam Gase and we all know that, you know, Adam Gase took over in in two thousand sixteen and you talked about also how, you know, you went into his office and, you know, you were willing and able on to see to do whatever it took to be successful.
• 25:07
[SPEAKER_05]: And that's what you did in that two thousand sixteen season.
• 25:10
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, I was one of your most productive seasons of your career.
• 25:13
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, average over seventeen yards of catch.
• 25:15
[SPEAKER_05]: I had a career high at nine touchdowns and
• 25:17
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, you were a major weapon for Ryan Tandyhill, along with Jarvis Landry in Devontate Parker.
• 25:23
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, tell us what clicked that year.
• 25:25
[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, because was against offense, was Tandyhill finally developing, or it was just a collective of the offensive players.
• 25:32
[SPEAKER_05]: And then what really clicked for you that year, in
• 25:35
  [SPEAKER_03]: There's definitely a combination of things.
• 25:37
  [SPEAKER_03]: We ran the boss.
• 25:38
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, well, you know, you, you mentioned JJ, you know, we ran that stretch.
• 25:44
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, forgot about, forgot about your running back.
• 25:47
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I'm about why receivers, you know, I, you know what I mean.
• 25:52
[SPEAKER_03]: We ran that thing so well and it helped you know what the play action game and yeah just it just clicked you know what Adam was doing he simplified the game for us and we were able to play fast ten hell played lights out and I mean when I tell you like the amount of effort we put into that season I ten hell would be getting the call in his head in his headset and before if he didn't hear it all the way or before it finished I could leave the huddle because I knew the play I knew the game plan like
• 26:18
  [SPEAKER_03]: through and through.
• 26:19
[SPEAKER_03]: I put so much into that season.
• 26:21
[SPEAKER_03]: And we just became tight as a group, you know, after kind of going through that struggle together with Philbin and it was like, we were just happy to have something new and and we were excited about the opportunity and we knew we had to go out and
• 26:35
[SPEAKER_03]: and perform so that we could keep Adam around.
• 26:37
[SPEAKER_03]: And we felt like the tide was turning.
• 26:39
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, from me, it was a contract here.
• 26:41
[SPEAKER_03]: I played a majority of that season with the cash train.
• 26:44
[SPEAKER_03]: And so I just was like, week to week, trying to make sure that I could stay out there and earn my keep and help the team win.
• 26:51
[SPEAKER_03]: And you know, trying to make that playoff run.
• 26:53
[SPEAKER_03]: But man, we just had, yeah, we had a bunch of exciting players.
• 26:55
[SPEAKER_03]: Man, watching Jay do a thing and getting out there and really like blocking for him and putting our body on the line and that type of stuff.
• 27:02
[SPEAKER_03]: It just, the team meshed well and, you know, obviously that helped us on my field.
• 27:07
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, I want to follow that up real quick.
• 27:09
  [SPEAKER_05]: Big sad because
• 27:10
[SPEAKER_05]: I love the fact that, you know, you got a wide receiver that's loved with the running backs doing, but we all realize that wide receivers are big contributors to running backs having success, but you've got a guy, you know, that that's willing to do whatever, you know, and we know if the run game goes well, Kenny, then the past game, the play axe you talked about is going to go well as well, man.
• 27:33
[SPEAKER_05]: I love that new voice, new face, new office, new life when it comes to an office.
• 27:40
[SPEAKER_05]: At home, Gase, you know, of course, he gets shit down here because of the lack of team success, but how much fun was it playing in an office like that when you got a smart guy, the genius like that?
• 27:53
[SPEAKER_05]: That maybe that didn't work out as well as a head coach, but damn, when game planning came along, it had to be a lot of fun things.
• 27:59
  [SPEAKER_05]: I love game planning.
• 28:01
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, we always had the tools, you know, talk about football being a game of chess.
• 28:05
[SPEAKER_03]: We had, we had our moves lined up.
• 28:09
[SPEAKER_03]: We knew if team was going to come and play his own, we had our own beaters.
• 28:12
[SPEAKER_03]: We knew if a team was going to come play man, we had our man beaters.
• 28:14
[SPEAKER_03]: If they want to switch in the second quarter to play man, boom, we got our man beaters and he would recognize that stuff and we would go.
• 28:20
[SPEAKER_03]: And that's, that's what I really appreciated about, you know, his style was that we were always prepared for whatever they had.
• 28:27
[SPEAKER_03]: He had a lot of misplaced, you know, being the head coach and we see that that challenge for a lot of guys that go from coordinator to head coach and something that's, you know, it's.
• 28:36
[SPEAKER_03]: It is what it is, guys, not to make more money, they want the opportunity, whatever.
• 28:39
[SPEAKER_03]: But we were always prepared and it goes to the Miami Miracle.
• 28:45
  [SPEAKER_03]: We had practice.
• 28:46
  [SPEAKER_03]: Oh my God.
• 28:46
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, practice that play every Saturday from the time I don't go out there until we use it.
• 28:52
  [SPEAKER_03]: Practice, practice, practice, practice.
• 28:54
[SPEAKER_03]: And when we ran it in the game, it happened exactly like we practiced.
• 28:58
[SPEAKER_03]: And so you go to talk about people's creativity, you go to talk about what they do as a coordinator.
• 29:03
  [SPEAKER_03]: He had us prepared.
• 29:05
[SPEAKER_03]: for every situation and it showed, you know, and one of the biggest moments in our history.
• 29:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, hi, hi, praise and deed.
• 29:12
[SPEAKER_01]: And we're going to get back to the Miami Miracle because we have some follow-up questions there we do.
• 29:16
[SPEAKER_01]: But I won't fast forward here because two thousand sixteen was incredibly significant for you for another reason as well.
• 29:26
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, and that
• 29:28
[SPEAKER_01]: take football out of the equation and just as a human being living in this country you became increasingly hurt frustrated saddened by what was happening around us both locally and nationally you know obviously in regards to police brutality the deaths of of unarmed men of color
• 29:47
[SPEAKER_01]: and on September eleven of that year prior to kick off of, I think it was the open game of the season against Seattle, you and Jolani Jenkins, Aryan Foster, Michael Thomas, you guys taken me during the national anthem.
• 30:01
[SPEAKER_01]: There was obviously this protest that had begun with Colin Kaepernick and to say the least it became incredibly polarizing.
• 30:08
[SPEAKER_01]: Can you take us through where you were in respect to just your head space leading up to
• 30:14
[SPEAKER_01]: you know, whether it's the weeks, the days, the hours leading up to the decision to go out there and take a knee.
• 30:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And from what I was reading, you called a team meeting prior to doing that to talk to the team as a whole about like, hey, this is this is something we're all facing.
• 30:31
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's get into this thing.
• 30:32
[SPEAKER_01]: And you found out very quickly that just how divisive that could become or you found out who people were and what they were feeling very quickly from what I understand.
• 30:43
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.
• 30:43
[SPEAKER_03]: So, you know, for people that don't know, like I grew up in Oceanside, California, it's near Camp Palton, our military base.
• 30:52
[SPEAKER_03]: And so my influences in my life were all Marines, or people in service, all my coaches and every sport, any male mentor that I ever had, either served or family served.
• 31:04
[SPEAKER_03]: So a lot of pride.
• 31:07
[SPEAKER_03]: and respect for people in the service.
• 31:11
[SPEAKER_03]: But, yeah, so leading up to September eleven opening game in Seattle.
• 31:17
[SPEAKER_03]: I had been seeing what was happening in, you know, Meg and Rapino was taking a knee during the National Anthem, calling in an air cad sat on the bench a couple times.
• 31:25
[SPEAKER_03]: I think Michael Bennett as well, in preseason.
• 31:27
[SPEAKER_03]: And I had been seeing what was happening around police brutality in our country.
• 31:33
  [SPEAKER_03]: And I just felt
• 31:35
[SPEAKER_03]: Once again, young and naive, that if we could use our platform as athletes, people look up to us, they pay attention to us.
• 31:42
[SPEAKER_03]: If we could educate people on what was happening in our country, we have the resources, we're educated enough.
• 31:47
[SPEAKER_03]: We'll learn about the problem and we will be able to make a change, right?
• 31:50
  [SPEAKER_03]: Problem solution.
• 31:54
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so only over so easy, right?
• 31:56
  [SPEAKER_03]: Right.
• 31:57
  [SPEAKER_03]: All right.
• 31:58
[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, leading up to the game, I, you know, start calling people that I, that are my mentors and one of them is my pop wonder coach.
• 32:07
[SPEAKER_03]: His name is Coach Joe and he was in Marine for like, twenty five years.
• 32:11
[SPEAKER_03]: And I just wanted to give him a heads up, talk to him, get his opinion, at that point.
• 32:14
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, ultimately he was like, hey, you know, your grandpa served, I served, all your culture served, like, do not disrespect these men, people that have lost their lives, so on and so forth.
• 32:23
[SPEAKER_03]: I would like it if he would not get involved in a protest.
• 32:25
[SPEAKER_03]: And he's like a second father to me.
• 32:27
[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm like, you know, I appreciate your insight, but you know, I'm going to pray on it and do what's, you know, I feel like is best in my gut.
• 32:33
[SPEAKER_03]: And so yeah, the night before the game, my call team meeting, until Adam, you know, if we can just get to get the players only,
• 32:39
[SPEAKER_03]: And I stand up in front of the team with Michael and Aryan and Jalani and I'm like, hey guys, we're thinking about getting involved in the protest, but obviously we like to do something as a team, we are a team.
• 32:51
[SPEAKER_03]: And we just want to bring this to your guys attention before we go out there tomorrow for the game.
• 32:56
[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, it was just like any eruption of people yelling and screaming and cursing and upset, not wanting to get involved.
• 33:04
[SPEAKER_03]: And that kind of is what it was.
• 33:05
[SPEAKER_03]: And so we knew that then and they're like, okay, then we'll do our thing, but ultimately we're here to win football games.
• 33:11
[SPEAKER_03]: So we got to, you know, we got to win the game.
• 33:13
[SPEAKER_03]: And so that was that.
• 33:14
[SPEAKER_03]: And so yeah, on the morning of, you know, we're warming up and putting my pads on and stuff.
• 33:20
[SPEAKER_03]: And I go over to the guys and I'm like, you know, all right.
• 33:25
[SPEAKER_03]: Are you guys still with this?
• 33:26
[SPEAKER_03]: So are we all in on this or what's happening in the three other guys?
• 33:30
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so Michael to my tea to area into gelani and they're like, yeah, we're with it.
• 33:36
  [SPEAKER_03]: What's it?
• 33:36
  [SPEAKER_03]: Let's do it.
• 33:37
  [SPEAKER_03]: All right.
• 33:38
[SPEAKER_03]: And so man, like I, you know, you get nervous before games, but not like I haven't been like different nervous.
• 33:45
  [SPEAKER_03]: It's not just game.
• 33:46
[SPEAKER_03]: This is not just the game this time.
• 33:48
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, no, I was I was like shaking like I usually get the I usually pray before the game just like giving thanks, you know for the situation that I'm in you know playing a blessing over both teams and all the guys around the league that we can all
• 34:01
[SPEAKER_03]: give all the glory to God to stay healthy, you know.
• 34:03
[SPEAKER_03]: And so at that point in time, I couldn't even hold on to my thoughts while we're down on a knee up like my I was just shaking and like I couldn't get through my my usual prayer and just knew like the type of backlash we were going to receive and and what was coming with this decision, but I also knew the intention that I had in my heart, right, which was just to try and make a difference to try and educate people and educate myself as well, but
• 34:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Really to try and, you know, stop all of these things from happening in a country where I feel like we have the technology, we have the resources, you know, we have the smarts to not be doing what we're doing.
• 34:38
[SPEAKER_03]: So yeah, it was just a decision that I made off of a gut feeling, off of something in my heart.
• 34:44
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I didn't know too much about the history of movements or civil rights movement.
• 34:49
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I was a pure athlete, a played sports every season.
• 34:52
[SPEAKER_03]: And school wasn't, you know, something that I necessarily loved.
• 34:55
[SPEAKER_03]: I knew that I had to pass my classes so that I could
• 34:58
[SPEAKER_03]: stay eligible and so at that point in time it was just something I was making a decision off of a gut feeling and after I got involved in the process it was like alright I gotta educate myself and so I started reading a ton listening to podcasts and watching documentaries and really doing everything that I could to be able to hold my own and some of these conversations about these you know really challenging issues.
• 35:19
[SPEAKER_00]: What have going bankrupt was the best thing that happened to you.
• 35:22
[SPEAKER_00]: Whether it's your wages being garnished, car repossessed, house foreclosed, or you're suffocating with that.
• 35:27
[SPEAKER_00]: A good bankruptcy attorney can give you peace of mind that you need and deserve.
• 35:31
[SPEAKER_00]: My name is Chad Van Horn from Van Horn Law Group, and I've personally seen people thrive after filing for bankruptcy.
• 35:38
[SPEAKER_00]: The shame of bankruptcy is just a boy to keep you in debt forever.
• 35:41
[SPEAKER_00]: There is no shame to work with Van Horn Law Group to get rid of your debt for good.
• 35:45
[SPEAKER_00]: If you're ready to get your life back, call us today.
• 35:47
  [SPEAKER_00]: Say, I'd last been you'll.
• 35:49
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, can't even act.
• 35:51
[SPEAKER_05]: I really applaud what you did, man.
• 35:53
  [SPEAKER_05]: I do, man.
• 35:54
[SPEAKER_05]: It took a lot of courage to make that kind of statement.
• 35:58
[SPEAKER_05]: And we all know that some others did not get opportunities following that.
• 36:03
[SPEAKER_05]: You know the protests and we're so real the way you did it you talk about how you educate yourself on it and how you made a stance like we can go back to our moms again my mom had sit in back in high school when things weren't right or felt that things weren't right and trying to make a change trying to make a difference man and the fact that you know we're gonna lead that
• 36:26
[SPEAKER_05]: seventy five to eighty percent black and brown, but some weren't willing to take a, that stands and I get it.
• 36:32
  [SPEAKER_05]: I mean, some people can't take a stance.
• 36:35
  [SPEAKER_05]: We know that.
• 36:36
[SPEAKER_05]: Some people cannot do that, man.
• 36:38
[SPEAKER_05]: But you're willing to do it.
• 36:39
[SPEAKER_05]: And you weren't trying to make it.
• 36:42
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, some kind of a trend, you did it for all the right reasons.
• 36:46
[SPEAKER_05]: And that couldn't have been easy to put yourself out there like that.
• 36:49
[SPEAKER_05]: But what really stood out to me was the work you began to do in addition to the peaceful protests.
• 36:56
[SPEAKER_05]: You made it clear that it was not meant to be a disrespect to the military.
• 37:01
[SPEAKER_05]: And it really meant to not disrespect to any other than the justice was what you were talking about.
• 37:08
[SPEAKER_05]: But then you backed that up.
• 37:09
[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, from town hall conversations,
• 37:12
[SPEAKER_05]: to police ride along to this is with military veterans.
• 37:15
[SPEAKER_05]: It seemed like you were very intentional about learning and growing and trying to be an agent of change.
• 37:21
[SPEAKER_05]: Was that always part of plan or did it morph to that?
• 37:24
[SPEAKER_05]: Or did you kind of grow into that?
• 37:27
[SPEAKER_05]: And then after you began to really pour into that work, what did you find out?
• 37:33
[SPEAKER_03]: I attribute who I was as a professional growing up seeing people like junior sale, right?
• 37:40
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, and I was a kid, we go to the beach and junior would be there working out in the sand with pro guys, college guys, high school guys afterwards.
• 37:48
[SPEAKER_03]: He'd bring everybody together, talk to everyone like he was a human being before he was the football player.
• 37:55
[SPEAKER_03]: And so I from high school to college and NFL, like I always just tried to be that
• 38:01
[SPEAKER_03]: Somebody who was very accessible, reachable, a regular dude.
• 38:05
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, I happen to play football.
• 38:06
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, you might happen to watch me for entertainment, but like, I'm going to come talk to you, hang out, we'll take the picture, whatever it is.
• 38:12
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I'm just like you.
• 38:13
[SPEAKER_03]: I just do this thing.
• 38:14
[SPEAKER_03]: And so when it came to the process, it was like, I know how to, I know how to talk to people.
• 38:19
[SPEAKER_03]: I know how to communicate.
• 38:20
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not going to let the narrative what they're reading on their phones or what they're seeing on their screens.
• 38:26
[SPEAKER_03]: Be who I am, because I know who I am.
• 38:29
  [SPEAKER_03]: And so I know I'm not anti-military.
• 38:31
  [SPEAKER_03]: I know I'm not anti-police.
• 38:33
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I'm against the blue code.
• 38:35
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, I think it's messed up that an officer can commit a crime here or not, not serve any time, then go to another district and be hired.
• 38:43
[SPEAKER_03]: They're like, there, there's things that frustrate me within these systems, but I'm not against police officers.
• 38:49
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not against the military.
• 38:51
  [SPEAKER_03]: And I know that.
• 38:52
[SPEAKER_03]: So I'll go and I'll talk to the police and we'll go hang out and we'll spend time with you.
• 38:55
[SPEAKER_03]: Then I'll go and I'll talk to the military and we'll hang out and we'll spend time together.
• 38:58
[SPEAKER_03]: All these people saying that I'm anti-military.
• 39:00
[SPEAKER_03]: They never even been to the VA.
• 39:02
[SPEAKER_03]: So I go down to the VA.
• 39:04
[SPEAKER_03]: We spend time with them.
• 39:05
[SPEAKER_03]: And those people are in there like, oh, you're Kenny Stills.
• 39:08
  [SPEAKER_03]: You're the guy taking a knee.
• 39:09
  [SPEAKER_03]: Thank you so much.
• 39:09
[SPEAKER_03]: This is exactly what I fought for.
• 39:11
[SPEAKER_03]: It was just, it's something that's a part of me, but it was also just so obvious that I could go and say, hey, I know why I am.
• 39:22
[SPEAKER_03]: I got, you can't tell me who I am.
• 39:24
[SPEAKER_03]: You can't tell me what I stand for.
• 39:26
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm literally just here saying, like, hey, we can do better.
• 39:30
[SPEAKER_03]: If you love somebody or something, you hold them accountable.
• 39:34
[SPEAKER_03]: You hold them to the highest standard.
• 39:36
[SPEAKER_03]: I love America so much that I want it to be better.
• 39:41
[SPEAKER_03]: And that's, there's nothing wrong with that.
• 39:43
  [SPEAKER_03]: That's great.
• 39:44
  [SPEAKER_03]: That's great.
• 39:44
[SPEAKER_03]: If you just, if you fall in love with somebody, let them walk all over you because you're lost in the sauce, then that's your fault.
• 39:50
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not letting that happen.
• 39:51
[SPEAKER_03]: Any place that I go, I'm trying to raise that frequency.
• 39:54
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm trying to make it as better as I can because that's what I hope.
• 39:57
  [SPEAKER_03]: When I leave, I don't want to be
• 39:58
[SPEAKER_03]: I don't want a tombstone, I want to be cremated, but if I had a tombstone, it would just, my little dash would mean that I made an impact on the place that I was in.
• 40:07
[SPEAKER_03]: And that's all I can help for.
• 40:08
[SPEAKER_03]: And so I was happy and proud of what I did.
• 40:11
[SPEAKER_03]: And obviously, over time, my thoughts have changed about some of the systems that are in place.
• 40:17
[SPEAKER_03]: But I felt like I did the best that I could at the time with what I knew.
• 40:20
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, man.
• 40:22
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was going to say Jews like, you think you made a difference.
• 40:26
[SPEAKER_01]: You made a difference in a lot of people's lives.
• 40:27
  [SPEAKER_01]: Huge impact.
• 40:28
[SPEAKER_01]: I think some of the work the dolphins still do.
• 40:30
[SPEAKER_01]: And I know you, um, I'm hedging did a lot of work with Jason Jenkins and, you know, the football United program, so on and so forth.
• 40:37
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, you were kind of on the ground floor of a lot of that.
• 40:42
[SPEAKER_01]: But then you started the, um,
• 40:45
  [SPEAKER_01]: You did those tours.
• 40:46
[SPEAKER_01]: You went on those tours of the Southern U.S.
• 40:48
[SPEAKER_01]: And that was, I remember you came to my office, right?
• 40:50
[SPEAKER_01]: And we were talking about what you were doing.
• 40:52
[SPEAKER_01]: And so Jews every year when the dolphins name their Walter Peyton and a film manager nominee, we make a donation.
• 41:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Jason having won the award.
• 41:01
  [SPEAKER_01]: He believes in it.
• 41:02
[SPEAKER_01]: He believes in the work guys are doing.
• 41:03
[SPEAKER_01]: And so we make a donation.
• 41:04
[SPEAKER_01]: Nothing huge, but just kind of a show of support in the work these guys are doing and I reached out to Kenny and I remember you came in and you were telling me about this tour you were taking.
• 41:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Can you talk a little bit about the tour and how what inspired that and you know, juice asked like what did you learn?
• 41:22
[SPEAKER_01]: And it had to be, I opened and going to all these different states and all these different cities that historically dealt with these issues that you were trying to confront.
• 41:30
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah.
• 41:31
[SPEAKER_03]: So being a California boy, all we knew is what we read in the history books about the South and what we watched on, you know, in movies.
• 41:40
[SPEAKER_03]: And so yeah, I just felt like if I was going to attack, you know, the issues of racism and police brutality, and I needed to understand, you know,
• 41:52
[SPEAKER_03]: more about our country and where the in where some of these issues were really prevalent.
• 41:57
[SPEAKER_03]: And so yeah, so I rented an RV in the off season.
• 42:01
[SPEAKER_03]: I linked up with the Justice League, which is a national nonprofit that does work.
• 42:08
[SPEAKER_03]: in the space and they connected me with grassroots organizations all across the south.
• 42:14
[SPEAKER_03]: And so we just did like a twenty one day road trip.
• 42:16
[SPEAKER_03]: I think we, you know, hitting Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Carolinas.
• 42:25
[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, going to the National African American History Museum, going to the Lorraine Motel, you know, speaking on literacy, so I read books to kids.
• 42:34
[SPEAKER_03]: I went to reentry programs.
• 42:37
[SPEAKER_03]: I went to juvenile detention center.
• 42:39
[SPEAKER_03]: It's just learning about every issue possible that we're dealing with, you know, in the United States, especially in the South.
• 42:48
[SPEAKER_03]: Obviously learned a ton, but
• 42:50
[SPEAKER_03]: just wanted to do my best to explain to people, you know, why I was doing what I was doing, to be an, you know, an influence with the young people, you know, talking about mental health as well, because, you know, once I started the protests, I really saw, you know, what the world was like.
• 43:10
[SPEAKER_03]: grew up in athlete and somebody that had a skill.
• 43:13
[SPEAKER_03]: And so there wasn't a lot of pushback, you know, from people, you know, throughout my whole life, until I decided to use my voice, right?
• 43:21
[SPEAKER_03]: And once I once like to speak up for something, it was like, oh, you know, I had high school parents, you know, called me crazy names on Facebook.
• 43:29
[SPEAKER_03]: I had kids, and I had grown up with, you know, encouraging that person.
• 43:33
[SPEAKER_03]: And so my whole world changed, right?
• 43:34
[SPEAKER_03]: Before it was like, damn, everybody's on my side.
• 43:36
  [SPEAKER_03]: Everybody loves me.
• 43:37
  [SPEAKER_03]: I do yada.
• 43:38
[SPEAKER_03]: And then I take the knee and then it was like, whoa, you know, half, I felt like half the world hated me.
• 43:43
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, and that's something that's something that's really challenging to do with.
• 43:47
[SPEAKER_03]: And so I started doing therapy and mindset work.
• 43:50
[SPEAKER_03]: And so I was sharing that with the kids on the trip to like, hey, you know, we got meditation, we got yoga, we got breathing techniques.
• 43:57
[SPEAKER_03]: There's all these free things that we can be doing, you know, to work on ourselves.
• 44:01
[SPEAKER_03]: And so it was a combination of me learning, me sharing, and also, you know, just trying to let people know like, hey,
• 44:07
[SPEAKER_03]: There's somebody out there cares.
• 44:08
[SPEAKER_03]: You think somebody doesn't care?
• 44:09
  [SPEAKER_03]: Somebody cares.
• 44:10
  [SPEAKER_03]: I promise you.
• 44:11
  [SPEAKER_03]: I drove out here.
• 44:11
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm not getting paid to do this.
• 44:14
[SPEAKER_03]: I, you know, my buddy and I are an RV together in PB and J sandwiches.
• 44:18
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, like we, you know, every, we would finish an event and drive through the night to go to the next event.
• 44:24
[SPEAKER_03]: Some nights not taking a shower, just like totally, you know, seconded out.
• 44:28
[SPEAKER_03]: And so it was a great process.
• 44:30
[SPEAKER_03]: And something that we did two years in a row, and was really cool to be able to come back a second time and show these kids like, hey, this is no one in dumb thing.
• 44:37
  [SPEAKER_03]: We're here again.
• 44:38
[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, I love Kenny.
• 44:41
[SPEAKER_05]: We're a quick one more time for the people that are not listening out there.
• 44:45
[SPEAKER_05]: Please let them know one more time that it was never anti-police anti-military and you are an agent of change and inspiration to all these kids out there, man.
• 44:57
[SPEAKER_05]: Just I want them to hear people in the back to hear this.
• 45:00
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, a hundred percent was never could could never be was never anti-police was never anti-military.
• 45:06
[SPEAKER_03]: I said my the people that made the biggest impact in my life for all Marines.
• 45:12
[SPEAKER_03]: So still to this day.
• 45:14
[SPEAKER_03]: And you know, so it was it's always been about holding this place accountable to the values that we say that we're about
• 45:20
[SPEAKER_03]: You can talk about the pledge of allegiance.
• 45:22
[SPEAKER_03]: We talked about with liberty with freedom and justice for all.
• 45:26
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, hey, and that's what that means.
• 45:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Then that's what I tried to hold us accountable to.
• 45:31
[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, it's not complicated.
• 45:32
[SPEAKER_03]: All the narratives and all the stories that are put out there.
• 45:36
[SPEAKER_03]: unless they're talking about me trying to make this place a better place than they're wrong.
• 45:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, so just you can see why we were proud to support into like I said in a wrong way, but but we were happy to help by some of that peanut butter and jelly, I guess, you know, do to get you on the road.
• 45:52
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's a little weird for me after having that level of conversation here to kind of bounce back and forth between football and your activism.
• 46:01
[SPEAKER_01]: But realistically, that's what you were doing on a daily basis, right?
• 46:04
[SPEAKER_01]: You were going to work and trying to be the best football player you could be, but at the same time, trying to make change.
• 46:09
[SPEAKER_01]: So I am going to ask another football question.
• 46:11
[SPEAKER_01]: And this one is tied to something you alluded to earlier in a twenty eighteen season, specifically that game, my miracle was December ninth.
• 46:18
[SPEAKER_01]: was the date of that game.
• 46:19
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, the game will forever be remembered as the mind and miracle.
• 46:25
[SPEAKER_01]: And then Drake will forever be remembered as the hero for finishing that play off, you know, as a play that involved two laterals.
• 46:33
[SPEAKER_01]: you know, let's not forget, Kenny, that one of those, you were involved with, right?
• 46:37
[SPEAKER_01]: So ultimately, Beatscrankowski, you know, we talked to Kenny, and it was cool to talk about the whole DeGronk, but really not have the angle and the whole thing.
• 46:44
[SPEAKER_01]: And lift you guys in at thirty-four to thirty-three improbable victory.
• 46:48
[SPEAKER_01]: But you're a role in that game, not just that moment, you're role as significant that moment, but you're role in that game was monumental.
• 46:55
  [SPEAKER_01]: And I don't know that people
• 46:57
[SPEAKER_01]: reflect upon that because that that moment was so electric at the end.
• 47:02
[SPEAKER_01]: But eight catches to nine targets, eight catches, a hundred and thirty five yards in the touchdown.
• 47:07
[SPEAKER_01]: That ain't a bad day at the office.
• 47:09
  [SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
• 47:10
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's a monster game.
• 47:11
[SPEAKER_01]: And then to top it all off the Miami Miracle.
• 47:15
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, it was cool to hear you talk about how well you guys practice that and how prepared you guys were for it.
• 47:21
[SPEAKER_01]: But if you don't catch that fourteen yard pass and not just catch the ball, but like that pivot you had to make, right?
• 47:26
[SPEAKER_01]: You almost had to get, you know, you kind of, I don't know if it was left and right or right.
• 47:31
[SPEAKER_01]: It was smooth, it was smooth.
• 47:33
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then obviously, and Devante, I think, just had to like catch a pitch, right?
• 47:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
• 47:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, these is the only whole thing.
• 47:40
[SPEAKER_01]: But if you don't do that, then the whole thing falls apart.
• 47:43
  [SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't happen.
• 47:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Talk to us about what, I know it's not your style to say, hey, what about me?
• 47:50
[SPEAKER_01]: I was important in that game, too.
• 47:51
[SPEAKER_01]: That's not who you are.
• 47:52
[SPEAKER_01]: But what do you remember from that game?
• 47:55
[SPEAKER_01]: And then from that moment from the time you guys got in the huddle knew that was the play call.
• 47:58
[SPEAKER_01]: I would just be really cool to hear it.
• 48:00
[SPEAKER_01]: We heard it from Kangins perspective.
• 48:02
[SPEAKER_01]: It would be really cool to hear it from yours as well.
• 48:04
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
• 48:04
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, first I want to tell you guys that you you watched the game.
• 48:08
[SPEAKER_03]: We shouldn't have even been in that position.
• 48:11
[SPEAKER_03]: There was a drive earlier in the quarter that I caught a ball underneath route.
• 48:16
[SPEAKER_03]: You got up the field.
• 48:18
[SPEAKER_03]: And then kind of like went down early like before the first down.
• 48:22
[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for the first time.
• 48:24
[SPEAKER_03]: like the flight before it.
• 48:25
[SPEAKER_03]: So it was like a long third and one.
• 48:27
[SPEAKER_03]: And the reason why I went down because the ball was kind of sliding all over the place and then one had put got popped out earlier.
• 48:32
[SPEAKER_03]: I think one of the McCordi twins had put punch one out and I got it back.
• 48:36
[SPEAKER_03]: But so I was like more worried about boss security than I was thinking about the first down.
• 48:39
[SPEAKER_03]: So boom, I get down thinking like, I already got the first down.
• 48:42
  [SPEAKER_03]: But I was short.
• 48:43
  [SPEAKER_03]: We get stuffed.
• 48:44
[SPEAKER_03]: They get the ball back.
• 48:45
[SPEAKER_03]: All the momentum starts changing.
• 48:46
[SPEAKER_03]: So that's that's really when that the portion of this started for me because I was really working on and with my like life coach at the time about working on being positive all the time.
• 49:00
[SPEAKER_03]: And so when that happened usually I would have been on the sideline like flustered and frustrated and upset.
• 49:04
[SPEAKER_03]: I was on the sideline like you know, it's okay.
• 49:06
  [SPEAKER_03]: We're gonna be okay.
• 49:07
[SPEAKER_03]: And so from that point on, the whole rest of the game, I'm just like, in my mind, trying to stay positive, they get, you know, they go down the kick field goal, they go down kick field goal.
• 49:15
[SPEAKER_03]: The games out of reach, but in my mind, I'm like, okay, we're going to win this thing.
• 49:19
[SPEAKER_03]: I never thought anything outside of that.
• 49:22
[SPEAKER_03]: And so we get the ball back.
• 49:23
  [SPEAKER_03]: He calls the play.
• 49:24
  [SPEAKER_03]: We're in the huddle.
• 49:25
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, all right, this is like we're gonna win this game.
• 49:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I never thought anything else, which was really different for me in this time of my life.
• 49:33
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, I had to use negativity as motivation always.
• 49:36
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I loved to read somebody talking shit about me in the newspaper.
• 49:40
[SPEAKER_03]: I loved to, you know, it was, the negativity was the thing that fed me.
• 49:44
[SPEAKER_03]: And so in this moment, I'm like, oh, we got this, we're gonna win, we're gonna win, we're gonna win whatever.
• 49:48
[SPEAKER_03]: So we call the play I get it and in the when we had practice and and walk through it was always like there was something that you had to do yes I had to make run the encoder had to make the catch but then it was a little bit of freestyle before you pitch it to the next person and so when I got it was like okay, well, let me make these guys feel like I'm gonna do something different than just pitch it and so that's how you kind of get the little pivot jab step and then I'll talk about the tackle me so then I let it go
• 50:11
[SPEAKER_03]: And from that moment on, it was just like, okay, it's out of my hands, like, I'll just see what happens.
• 50:16
[SPEAKER_03]: And the way that it happened, it was unreal, because everything happened the way we practice.
• 50:23
[SPEAKER_03]: And so it just unfolded in the end very soon.
• 50:26
[SPEAKER_03]: The most perfect way possible.
• 50:28
[SPEAKER_03]: And then it happens and he scores.
• 50:29
[SPEAKER_03]: And I literally, I, I'm on the field just on my back.
• 50:33
  [SPEAKER_03]: Like, I'll walk.
• 50:34
[SPEAKER_03]: because I was doing this exercise, you know, in my head about being positive, radical positivity and manifesting, you know, this positive things and it happened.
• 50:43
[SPEAKER_03]: And so I'm laying there like not only so happy that we won after I had almost blew the game for us, but that this thing that I was working so hard on in the mind, this mindset work now was like forever stamped and a part of me is something that truly works.
• 51:04
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, the Miami Miracle meant something totally different from me than everyone else because this mindset stuff really downloaded in that day and has always been a part of me since you know, you can't I'm I'm gonna tell you this man that was the most amazing like time for me because I know so many people I'm sitting there loving us sweet.
• 51:24
[SPEAKER_05]: I got I got to do the post game show right and I'm sitting in the sweet and I'm like
• 51:29
[SPEAKER_05]: And then we really had a chance, but to see all the people that left the stadium and all the new fans ever coming down to the the one hundred levels to celebrate that was the best experience ever seeing how disappointed they were in that last place and how bad our fans felt when they're asked to in the parking lot trying to get back into a big old grid of nothing out there because you can't go anywhere on the way you leave it early.
• 51:55
[SPEAKER_05]: That was absolutely the most amazing thing.
• 51:58
[SPEAKER_05]: But to see how you experienced the year rise and like Seth talked about the game you already have it and you talked about how you came up a shoulder net one play and it how you could have almost maybe not mean we're kind of lost a game positive in that that perspective nobody gets that perspective nobody has your perspective like you just told us about this play because all they see is can you Martin?
• 52:20
[SPEAKER_05]: I mean can you drink throwing the ball to the stands?
• 52:23
[SPEAKER_05]: You know what I mean?
• 52:24
  [SPEAKER_05]: And that's it.
• 52:25
[SPEAKER_05]: But probably starts with everything you talked about well before that plays in the call.
• 52:30
[SPEAKER_05]: Well before we even knew that Adam Gayset had put this play in, you know, over and over and over again.
• 52:36
[SPEAKER_05]: It's like we had a spike play put in for us back in the day with Danny Marino.
• 52:39
[SPEAKER_05]: Those things you never, you never know when those things are going to work.
• 52:43
[SPEAKER_05]: It worked like like like you drew it up like that.
• 52:46
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
• 52:47
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
• 52:47
[SPEAKER_03]: It was like ordained on that day.
• 52:50
  [SPEAKER_03]: Pow.
• 52:50
[SPEAKER_03]: That's how I was going to go down and yeah.
• 52:52
[SPEAKER_03]: Like I said, it was a huge day for me because the mindset stuff became like real.
• 52:57
[SPEAKER_03]: I saw an action and it just it totally changed who I was right as far as how I was going to compete from that point on.
• 53:05
[SPEAKER_03]: And obviously it was a monumental moment for us.
• 53:07
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it wasn't a huge part of our season or us, you know, having success without a line or whatever.
• 53:12
[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, just it was a huge moment for all of us.
• 53:16
[SPEAKER_01]: So cool to hear that, too, because, you know, I went to rewatch it and I was trying to find you in the celebration, right?
• 53:23
[SPEAKER_01]: Because it seemed like whole sidelines, it just met him in the end zone.
• 53:27
[SPEAKER_01]: And I never saw you.
• 53:28
[SPEAKER_01]: And I guess it's because you were laying on your back and having this reflective moment.
• 53:31
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's just really cool to hear that.
• 53:34
[SPEAKER_01]: I also saw that player earlier where you did slide in the announcer.
• 53:38
  [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, I can't remember what it was.
• 53:40
[SPEAKER_01]: But he's like, oh, I don't think he made the first down.
• 53:43
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it was Phil Sims or someone who was like, I don't think he got the first down.
• 53:46
  [SPEAKER_01]: It is.
• 53:48
[SPEAKER_01]: And so for you to have a game like you were having,
• 53:52
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you could see, we've all seen it.
• 53:54
[SPEAKER_01]: We've all been around guys who have had a lot of success in the game where the team has lost and they've really been pissed at everybody else.
• 54:02
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, like I did this thing.
• 54:03
[SPEAKER_01]: I did my part and it sounds like, you know, you could have gone the opposite direction, but this worked that you were doing on yourself, really put you in that frame of mind.
• 54:12
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just, I don't mean to restate everything you said, but I'm, I'm having
• 54:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Kind of like just as did, just some real appreciation for being able to see that moment through your lens is.
• 54:23
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, cool.
• 54:24
[SPEAKER_03]: Another thing that I was shared like simple things mindset stuff that we worked on and very easy story, but like things we talked about being pessimistic, you talk about being negative.
• 54:34
[SPEAKER_03]: When I was working with my life coach at the time, she asked me, what do you think when the ball is in the air?
• 54:40
[SPEAKER_03]: And for me, it was always don't drop it.
• 54:42
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, it was just don't drop it.
• 54:43
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, that's, that's, it was automatically when she asked me, don't drop it.
• 54:48
[SPEAKER_03]: She's like, why don't you try this?
• 54:49
[SPEAKER_03]: When the ball's in the air, imagine that it's in a tunnel and it only person that I can go to is you and start to think something like, that's my ball.
• 54:57
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to go get it.
• 54:58
  [SPEAKER_03]: Change this negative
• 55:01
[SPEAKER_03]: uh self-talk to something positive.
• 55:04
[SPEAKER_03]: And so you go back and watch the clip from the Buffalo game, Ryan throws me into double coverage on like a on the back left corner in the end zone and there's four arms that are reaching for the ball and me, I go and just pluck it.
• 55:18
[SPEAKER_03]: It's the same week I'm working on this exercise, the same.
• 55:22
[SPEAKER_03]: And so just to share with the fans that are out there that like, all of us, you know, athletes not athletes, we have these little things that we're doing within the mind that are training us to see things in a negative way.
• 55:35
[SPEAKER_03]: And if we can just switch those things to something positive, so much can change.
• 55:39
[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, that's, you know, little things that we're dealing with, you know, as athletes and as people all the time, it's like,
• 55:45
[SPEAKER_03]: just eliminating negative words that come out of your mouth.
• 55:48
[SPEAKER_03]: Yes, the self-talk is different, right?
• 55:50
[SPEAKER_03]: But when you communicate something when it comes out of your mouth and you verbalize it, you give it power.
• 55:55
[SPEAKER_03]: And so over my journey, you know, in trying to, you know, just find myself in a better place.
• 56:01
[SPEAKER_03]: It's just eliminating all of these things, eliminating can't, eliminating never, eliminating the word hate, like finding other words that you can substitute.
• 56:10
  [SPEAKER_03]: I highly dislike that.
• 56:11
[SPEAKER_03]: where I can't do this yet, or, you know, like, I don't know if this just want to encourage people that are out there to understand, like, these little things make such a big difference, you know, and over time, obviously, you know, they'll make a huge change in our lives.
• 56:28
  [SPEAKER_05]: It's a this means so good.
• 56:29
[SPEAKER_05]: I know we're taking up a lot of your time, man, but we just have you have so much great stuff to talk about and you've been so grace in which your time and and then we'll settle tell you that later on the pocket because we're almost done it we're not we're not going to keep you forever.
• 56:44
[SPEAKER_05]: There's so much good stuff that we want to talk to you about, man, it's so good here, which I have to say about so many amazing things.
• 56:50
[SPEAKER_05]: And so I want to get into this a little bit, like the following season, you experienced yet another regime change and your fourth new Miami Dolphins, hey coach.
• 57:00
[SPEAKER_05]: and for a season when Adam Gase was fired and Brian Flores was hired and was named the head man.
• 57:07
[SPEAKER_05]: There was some well documented bumps in the road to put him out.
• 57:12
[SPEAKER_05]: And then ultimately, you became part of one of the most significant traits in team history.
• 57:17
[SPEAKER_05]: When you and Larry Matunso were sent to Houston in exchange for a gang of draft pigs.
• 57:24
[SPEAKER_05]: As you were my demands and that draft that still talked about to this day, given the fact that it resulted in the dolphins actually selecting two of them.
• 57:32
[SPEAKER_05]: Tango Bola and a slew of other players still in the roster to this day.
• 57:37
[SPEAKER_05]: What do you remember about that experience?
• 57:39
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I mean, I remember at Clear State.
• 57:41
[SPEAKER_03]: you know, and when flow was brought in, you could tell they were trying to put together a more disciplined team, and they were focused on, I felt like control, right?
• 57:54
[SPEAKER_03]: Adam gave us a little bit more freedom.
• 57:57
  [SPEAKER_03]: He was a player's coach.
• 57:59
[SPEAKER_03]: B flow was, you know, coming from that patriots regime of, you know, not, you know, not so player friendly, you know, it's our way or the highway.
• 58:09
[SPEAKER_03]: And so, yeah, when he got there, I loved it to be honest.
• 58:13
[SPEAKER_03]: The man knows his football.
• 58:16
[SPEAKER_03]: I treated every player the same if you were, you know, the captain or if you were, you know, some work that I just showed up.
• 58:22
[SPEAKER_03]: And his attention in detail was great.
• 58:24
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, we knew every situation that could possibly happen in a football game.
• 58:28
  [SPEAKER_03]: And that's something that I love.
• 58:29
[SPEAKER_03]: Like I said, I'm a student of the game.
• 58:31
  [SPEAKER_03]: I love the game.
• 58:32
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I enjoyed bits and pieces of Holy was as a coach, but I also felt that whether it was him or somebody in the front office or above was was trying to make a point when it came to me, activism and other things that I was doing off the field.
• 58:50
  [SPEAKER_03]: And so you know,
• 58:54
[SPEAKER_03]: it all really started with him and I the first day of full-patted practice.
• 59:00
[SPEAKER_03]: So we get out there and he comes running by the receivers and he's talking shit.
• 59:04
[SPEAKER_03]: He's like, I need to see what's one of my receivers can block.
• 59:06
[SPEAKER_03]: I need to see what's one of my receivers can block.
• 59:08
[SPEAKER_03]: I need to see what's one of my receivers can block.
• 59:10
[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, he started talking trash and I'm like, so the door's open.
• 59:13
[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, you know, I'm pretty sure I was on the front side of that Brandon Bolden run for six yards last year when we met with us and he did not like.
• 59:26
[SPEAKER_03]: So from that moment on, we have a little bit of beef because he's well known between all the other teams that he's coached for, that he's sensitive, you know, and he's easy to get under a skin.
• 59:38
[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't know that until that moment.
• 59:40
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I thought any other coach, we all play football, where I'll be seeing the lines, you want to talk trash, and the doors open for trash talking, right?
• 59:46
  [SPEAKER_03]: Like I didn't start it.
• 59:47
  [SPEAKER_03]: He started it.
• 59:48
[SPEAKER_03]: We're all grown in here and so yeah, so that struck a nerve and you know wind up going in that day and he does things more in Patriots fashion where we have a group team meeting after practice usually after practices just offense and just defense or just specialties but he would brought the team in.
• 1:00:06
[SPEAKER_03]: And instead of going over the film and stuff, he kind of just paraded the team.
• 1:00:10
[SPEAKER_03]: He was telling us like, you know, like our Super Bowl was beating the Patriots and nobody respects this team and all this stuff.
• 1:00:18
[SPEAKER_03]: And so after the meeting, the guys are coming to me like, damn, Kenny, what'd you do?
• 1:00:22
[SPEAKER_03]: Because some of the defensive guys didn't hear this whole.
• 1:00:24
  [SPEAKER_03]: Right?
• 1:00:26
[SPEAKER_03]: And so yeah, I told him what happened.
• 1:00:27
[SPEAKER_03]: And so then that was kind of when that beef started.
• 1:00:30
[SPEAKER_03]: And then yeah, and then obviously the NFL signed the Inspire Change deal with Jay Z and all the type of stuff in the mask me about it.
• 1:00:38
[SPEAKER_03]: And I gave my honest opinion, which was like, yeah, I don't like the way that he went about it.
• 1:00:43
[SPEAKER_03]: I think that that Jay Z needed to talk down on capric and the movement and us in dealing in order to get his job done.
• 1:00:51
[SPEAKER_03]: But hey, he didn't seem very well informed.
• 1:00:53
[SPEAKER_03]: It was basically what I said about
• 1:00:55
[SPEAKER_03]: Jay-Z and so then the next day at practice they decided to play a whole playlist of Jay-Z songs and you know me like I guess it like
• 1:01:06
[SPEAKER_03]: I love a little bit of beef like you're not gonna get underneath my skin.
• 1:01:09
[SPEAKER_03]: I grew up with older siblings and like you know, I got tough skin and so they're playing the music and instead of me being like mad or sad or upset like I go to flow and I'm like, you know, this playlist sucks.
• 1:01:20
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, and it wasn't because I wanted to fight him or spy JZ, but I'm like, I'm like Empire State of mind is not getting me going for practice.
• 1:01:30
[SPEAKER_03]: So that got underneath his skin and at that point I wasn't medically cleared to be doing one-on-ones because that happened a little minor like hamstring injury or something.
• 1:01:39
[SPEAKER_03]: And so we get through the beginning of one of his deaths and we do one-on-one's first and he comes to me he's like Kenny Europe.
• 1:01:45
[SPEAKER_03]: He knew I wasn't cleared, but he's like Kenny Europe.
• 1:01:46
  [SPEAKER_03]: I'm like okay whatever.
• 1:01:48
[SPEAKER_03]: So I go out, I run around and run like a little eight hours top route boom, I catch it and I had to create it so much separation.
• 1:01:53
[SPEAKER_03]: The DB was nowhere near and so D flow was standing there, you know, where the defense was, what's standing when I caught it, I just like look back at him and stare at him as I trotted away.
• 1:02:05
[SPEAKER_03]: And that was kind of the last straw on that.
• 1:02:07
[SPEAKER_03]: And then I end up, you know, calling out Stephen Ross for his fundraiser for Donald Trump.
• 1:02:12
[SPEAKER_03]: And then was in a couple weeks.
• 1:02:13
  [SPEAKER_03]: I was trading.
• 1:02:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: Well, there it is.
• 1:02:14
  [SPEAKER_03]: There it is.
• 1:02:15
  [SPEAKER_03]: There it is.
• 1:02:15
[SPEAKER_01]: There's no follow-up to that with the river.
• 1:02:16
  [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, man.
• 1:02:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Empire State of mind is not going to do it.
• 1:02:18
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:19
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:19
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:19
  [SPEAKER_05]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:20
  [SPEAKER_05]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:20
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:21
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:22
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:22
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:23
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:23
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:23
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:24
  [SPEAKER_05]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:24
  [SPEAKER_05]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:25
  [SPEAKER_05]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:25
  [SPEAKER_05]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:26
  [SPEAKER_05]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:27
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:27
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:28
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:28
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:29
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:30
  [SPEAKER_01]: It's not doing it.
• 1:02:31
  [SPEAKER_01]: It
• 1:02:32
[SPEAKER_05]: Oh my god, I'm so good, my goodness.
• 1:02:34
[SPEAKER_05]: We're not gonna take up too much more of your time, but we do have...
• 1:02:39
[SPEAKER_05]: You know, two fun segments that we'd like to close the show out with.
• 1:02:42
[SPEAKER_05]: The first one is a new segment that we're trying out that we call this tank numerology.
• 1:02:48
[SPEAKER_05]: And man, you had, you've had your share of numbers.
• 1:02:51
[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, from foreign colleagues to eighty four and then twelve in the world is ten when you were here in Miami and then back to twelve, can you share to us how you landed your numbers?
• 1:03:03
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so four was worn as a one up to my dad.
• 1:03:07
[SPEAKER_03]: You were three in Wisconsin.
• 1:03:09
[SPEAKER_03]: So I wanted to be better than him.
• 1:03:11
[SPEAKER_01]: I was trying to do like some beef.
• 1:03:12
  [SPEAKER_01]: Don't you?
• 1:03:15
  [SPEAKER_03]: So four was that.
• 1:03:17
  [SPEAKER_03]: I'm better than you.
• 1:03:17
[SPEAKER_03]: I will be better than you.
• 1:03:19
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, eighty four was, I think, you know, just the only thing that was the only number that I liked that was available.
• 1:03:26
[SPEAKER_03]: I was a huge Randy Moss fan.
• 1:03:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, you know, growing up, I'm going to obviously love catching the deep ball and I love just, you know, his antics.
• 1:03:35
[SPEAKER_03]: Um, I was always so confused why people were upset when he did the fake moon.
• 1:03:39
[SPEAKER_03]: Like, actually, for his ass out, then I understand you being the first fake moon is like, you're upset about the fake moon.
• 1:03:47
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, of all the things.
• 1:03:48
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
• 1:03:49
[SPEAKER_03]: But, um, eighty four was that, uh, ten.
• 1:03:52
[SPEAKER_03]: I became more of a soccer fan.
• 1:03:54
[SPEAKER_03]: And that was a, you know, eighty four wasn't available because of Jordan Cameron tied in that came in with me that year.
• 1:04:00
[SPEAKER_03]: And so I was a soccer fan and I knew that, uh,
• 1:04:04
[SPEAKER_03]: the best players in soccer always were ten.
• 1:04:06
[SPEAKER_03]: And so that was something that I did there.
• 1:04:09
[SPEAKER_03]: Twelve was a number that I wore in popular winter when I was young.
• 1:04:13
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I wore a bunch of different numbers in popular winter, but yeah, twelve was one of them.
• 1:04:16
[SPEAKER_03]: So I went back to that and then we could, you know, we made a couple like funny like t-shirts around because you know they call the police twelve.
• 1:04:24
[SPEAKER_03]: And he shirts, I said the only twelve we fuck with.
• 1:04:29
[SPEAKER_03]: And so we did that.
• 1:04:30
[SPEAKER_03]: And so yeah, that was, that's kind of the story of all of all of those.
• 1:04:33
  [SPEAKER_03]: I think
• 1:04:35
[SPEAKER_03]: ten ended up being the one that I, you know, if I do a signature or something now, somebody comes to me, I always put ten.
• 1:04:42
  [SPEAKER_01]: That's a great point.
• 1:04:43
  [SPEAKER_05]: Yes, a great point.
• 1:04:44
[SPEAKER_05]: What do you sign your autographs with?
• 1:04:45
  [SPEAKER_05]: It's ten.
• 1:04:46
  [SPEAKER_05]: Ten.
• 1:04:47
  [SPEAKER_01]: Very cool.
• 1:04:47
  [SPEAKER_01]: They have it.
• 1:04:48
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's funny to say that.
• 1:04:49
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, and you see kickers who, so many of them were soccer players also, and they love that number ten.
• 1:04:54
[SPEAKER_01]: Linda O'Mare, who worked ten for a long time here with the dolphins would say that.
• 1:04:59
[SPEAKER_05]: You said you're on this number ten.
• 1:05:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Pete was all you got to wear a tent if you're if you're that dude so good stuff okay final segment we promised you we you know we keep we always say that we're gonna catch out here in a minute final segment and like any exciting game event well except for the my my miracle because that takes the cake
• 1:05:17
[SPEAKER_01]: But typically, an exciting game ends with a two-minute drill.
• 1:05:20
[SPEAKER_01]: So we wrap up every podcast with our fish tank two-minute drill.
• 1:05:23
[SPEAKER_01]: You've got two minutes on the clock.
• 1:05:25
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have a clock to show you, but, you know, I know you've done enough of these where you got them in your head.
• 1:05:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Let us know if you need any time outs.
• 1:05:31
[SPEAKER_01]: And we'll throw you a few, hopefully, fast-paced questions.
• 1:05:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully, fun questions, and then we'll truly get you out of here.
• 1:05:37
  [SPEAKER_01]: Sound good?
• 1:05:39
[SPEAKER_05]: All right, I'll start it off.
• 1:05:40
  [SPEAKER_05]: I'll start.
• 1:05:40
[SPEAKER_05]: Well, this is probably, I think we know the answer.
• 1:05:43
[SPEAKER_05]: There's no greater right here on this one here.
• 1:05:46
  [SPEAKER_05]: Jay-Z or Nas.
• 1:05:48
  [SPEAKER_05]: We roll a weekend.
• 1:05:50
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
• 1:05:52
[SPEAKER_03]: We know the answer is not.
• 1:05:53
[SPEAKER_05]: Right, let's move on to next semester.
• 1:05:55
  [SPEAKER_01]: I'm moving on.
• 1:05:55
  [SPEAKER_01]: OK.
• 1:05:56
[SPEAKER_01]: You have definitely turned your body into a canvas with a significant amount of tattoos.
• 1:06:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Is there any one that stands out above the rest as the most meaningful tattoo that you have?
• 1:06:08
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, I have the scene of the crucifixion on my back.
• 1:06:12
[SPEAKER_03]: And across it, I recently had them write big words in red, rebel or rebel.
• 1:06:18
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think that whole scene to me has always just, it's made me think.
• 1:06:24
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, I was like, who would I have been, you know, at the scene of the crucifixion?
• 1:06:28
[SPEAKER_03]: And so I would have hoped that, you know, I would have done something to stop that.
• 1:06:34
[SPEAKER_03]: or to to make a difference in that scene.
• 1:06:37
[SPEAKER_03]: And so yeah, just that whole tattoo together.
• 1:06:41
  [SPEAKER_05]: Clock still running.
• 1:06:42
  [SPEAKER_05]: Mixer still running.
• 1:06:43
  [SPEAKER_05]: All right, right.
• 1:06:44
[SPEAKER_05]: From snowboarding and swoop to the Taj Mahal to tiger safaris to sumo matches in Japan.
• 1:06:51
[SPEAKER_05]: I mean, your passport is beyond full.
• 1:06:53
[SPEAKER_05]: What has been the most amazing trip you've ever taken.
• 1:06:56
[SPEAKER_03]: And so I did the tiger safari in India on my birthday.
• 1:07:01
[SPEAKER_03]: And so we see the tigers, you know, they're
• 1:07:04
  [SPEAKER_03]: They're close.
• 1:07:05
[SPEAKER_03]: It's like some national geographic type stuff.
• 1:07:07
[SPEAKER_03]: And I had forgotten that moment that it was my birthday.
• 1:07:09
[SPEAKER_03]: We're right now and my partner's like, you know what's his birthday right?
• 1:07:13
[SPEAKER_03]: And like I literally was so lost in the sauce from seeing these tigers that I had forgot.
• 1:07:18
[SPEAKER_03]: And so it's something like that.
• 1:07:20
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, all the trips I try not to compare.
• 1:07:21
[SPEAKER_03]: But something like that where like I literally forgot who I was and what was happening.
• 1:07:26
[SPEAKER_03]: I was just so enamored by the tigers.
• 1:07:27
[SPEAKER_03]: But yeah, most recently that that takes the kick a lot.
• 1:07:31
  [SPEAKER_03]: I love big cats.
• 1:07:32
  [SPEAKER_03]: I love big cats.
• 1:07:33
  [SPEAKER_01]: He does indeed.
• 1:07:34
  [SPEAKER_01]: All right.
• 1:07:34
  [SPEAKER_01]: You've moved the chains.
• 1:07:35
[SPEAKER_01]: You didn't slide before the first down.
• 1:07:36
  [SPEAKER_01]: No, girl.
• 1:07:37
[SPEAKER_01]: And this one can't be last question.
• 1:07:39
[SPEAKER_01]: I typically try to come up with something funny for our last question.
• 1:07:42
[SPEAKER_01]: But I think this is more appropriate for you.
• 1:07:45
[SPEAKER_01]: You have a great appreciation for individuals who have made their mark in this world.
• 1:07:50
[SPEAKER_01]: If you could be accompanied on your next trip by any person on this planet, Pastor President living or dead, who would it be and where would the two of you go?
• 1:07:58
[SPEAKER_03]: got deep with it again that's that's a tough that's a tough choice but I mean a drill like it's crushed on yeah I think um you know going back to the motherland with somebody like uh like Angela Davis or John Lewis or yeah like Muhammad Ali or Malcolm X or
• 1:08:17
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, just like having that experience within me, read about them and their experience is there, but to have somebody who has had that wisdom and knowledge, you know, you go to a place when you travel, I always try to meet the locals, right, and get to learn the history of a place from their experience, from their perspective.
• 1:08:34
[SPEAKER_03]: And so yeah, one of my favorite things to do nowadays is to chat with the elders in my life, whether that's my parent, my friends, parents, or
• 1:08:44
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, mentors that I have because they have so much experience, right?
• 1:08:47
[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm just trying to figure out I'm trying to add value in the way that, you know, add on to the things that they've already done.
• 1:08:53
[SPEAKER_03]: So any of, you know, my, my mentors to be able to go back to Africa and experience and learn, you know, as you
• 1:09:02
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the two minute drill juice.
• 1:09:04
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he punched it in the end zone for sure.
• 1:09:06
  [SPEAKER_05]: Definitely score.
• 1:09:07
  [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, man.
• 1:09:09
[SPEAKER_05]: He went on his back on this one big set.
• 1:09:10
[SPEAKER_05]: He was in the end zone.
• 1:09:11
  [SPEAKER_05]: So that's right.
• 1:09:12
[SPEAKER_01]: He was the one where everybody else was in off.
• 1:09:14
  [SPEAKER_01]: So listen.
• 1:09:15
[SPEAKER_03]: All the names on out to into the chance.
• 1:09:17
[SPEAKER_03]: And I held on to that ball.
• 1:09:18
  [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, right.
• 1:09:19
  [SPEAKER_01]: Keep that one.
• 1:09:20
[SPEAKER_01]: Definitely keep that one for the trophy case for the mantle.
• 1:09:24
[SPEAKER_01]: Can this was awesome, man.
• 1:09:25
[SPEAKER_01]: We had expectations, but it exceeded all.
• 1:09:27
  [SPEAKER_01]: Man, so good.
• 1:09:28
[SPEAKER_01]: And it reminded me how much I missed chatting with you.
• 1:09:31
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, thank you for spending the time and making the time.
• 1:09:35
[SPEAKER_01]: Just want to guys on a surfboard in Indonesia and he schedule an interview with you two weeks down the line.
• 1:09:40
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I got a lot of respect for what that was it.
• 1:09:43
  [SPEAKER_01]: What that was.
• 1:09:44
  [SPEAKER_03]: Absolutely.
• 1:09:45
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, you know, I got a ton of respect for you.
• 1:09:47
[SPEAKER_03]: And that's why it was so easy to just say, hey, let's pick a date and let's get this thing done.
• 1:09:50
[SPEAKER_03]: So love chatting with you.
• 1:09:52
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, you have me back whenever, you know, I got some things going on.
• 1:09:56
[SPEAKER_03]: I got a book coming out next year.
• 1:09:58
[SPEAKER_03]: I've heard about the protests, I wrote about mental health, I wrote about my experience with psychedelics and plant medicine, and in like a little short periodical memoir.
• 1:10:06
[SPEAKER_03]: And so, yeah, hopefully I can get that out to you guys, you guys can check it out and we can talk.
• 1:10:11
  [SPEAKER_03]: Please.
• 1:10:11
  [SPEAKER_05]: Oh, definitely.
• 1:10:12
  [SPEAKER_05]: Counter-fab, bro.
• 1:10:13
  [SPEAKER_05]: We'll get you back.
• 1:10:14
  [SPEAKER_05]: Say the word.
• 1:10:15
  [SPEAKER_03]: Sure.
• 1:10:15
[SPEAKER_05]: We'll get you back on May.
• 1:10:16
[SPEAKER_05]: Hey, Kenny, thanks for diving in.
• 1:10:18
  [SPEAKER_05]: Absolutely.
• 1:10:28
  [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah
