- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, good morning, everybody, Good morning. How are you doing.
- 0:04Speaker 1: We've made it to Labor Day weekend, made it through
- 0:08Speaker 1: that horrible summer. Who likes summer? So glad to see
- 0:12Speaker 1: summer going right. We're at Labor Day personally, personally, you know,
- 0:17Speaker 1: full disclosure here, Memorial Day and fourth of July they
- 0:20Speaker 1: are way higher on my list. I get a lot
- 0:23Speaker 1: more pumped because they're at the start of summer. You know,
- 0:26Speaker 1: there's a lot of hope when Memorial Day comes around.
- 0:29Speaker 1: I envision a summer of just ecstatic fun, all the
- 0:33Speaker 1: things that I'm going to do. Memorial Day, it's just
- 0:36Speaker 1: pumped with all this hope. Then there's a lot of energy,
- 0:39Speaker 1: you know, when the fourth of July comes around. But
- 0:41Speaker 1: then Labor Day kind of SLINKs across the finish line,
- 0:45Speaker 1: schools starting. Summer's oh, summer's not over. But for all
- 0:50Speaker 1: practical purposes, summer feels like it's over. Winters looming kind
- 0:55Speaker 1: of looking in our windows, threatening, you know, waiting to
- 0:58Speaker 1: move in and spend months and months months on end
- 1:00Speaker 1: with us. All of that is kind of summed up
- 1:03Speaker 1: when I think about Labor Day. But I've got to be,
- 1:05Speaker 1: you know, glass half full. You know, I've got to
- 1:08Speaker 1: be that guy. Now, I've got to be optimistic, and
- 1:10Speaker 1: I've got to remember it's a day off from work, right,
- 1:13Speaker 1: and it's a Monday off on top of all of that,
- 1:15Speaker 1: which is, you know, really nice. We get a nice
- 1:17Speaker 1: long weekend and we've got no Monday to deal with
- 1:21Speaker 1: this next week. So that's all good. So I'm going
- 1:23Speaker 1: to take it and I'm going to enjoy it. I
- 1:25Speaker 1: hope you do too. You're listening to the Rep Goo
- 1:27Speaker 1: Lite home improvement show sponsored by Benjamin Moore. And because
- 1:30Speaker 1: it is a holiday weekend, the radio stations every time
- 1:35Speaker 1: a holiday weekend comes up, they always suggest that I
- 1:38Speaker 1: run a best of episode. You know, I think they'd
- 1:40Speaker 1: hate for me to waste a game material if I
- 1:44Speaker 1: don't have the ear of all of Michigan hanging on
- 1:47Speaker 1: every single word that I'm saying. So that's what they recommended.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Run a rerun. But I'm a maverick and I'm going
- 1:53Speaker 1: to do my own thing, and instead of reruns, I've
- 1:56Speaker 1: got an all new show planned for today. But it's
- 1:59Speaker 1: definitely a little bit lighter than usual. You'll see what
- 2:02Speaker 1: I mean in a minute. It's a holiday weekend, right,
- 2:04Speaker 1: we're going to kick back a little anyway. At the
- 2:06Speaker 1: end of the show, I've got a few must have
- 2:08Speaker 1: tools that you should budget for and add to your arsenal.
- 2:12Speaker 1: You know, they bailed me out of a situation recently,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and they'll help you too when this time comes around
- 2:18Speaker 1: for you. So we'll talk about those at the end.
- 2:20Speaker 1: I'll also be dishing out the last George job for
- 2:22Speaker 1: the summer, and it's the toughest one yet. But right now,
- 2:25Speaker 1: let's get to the paint point. And for this one,
- 2:28Speaker 1: it's less of a paint point and more of a
- 2:30Speaker 1: real life point. You know. Get the box of Kleenex out.
- 2:34Speaker 1: It's a tear jerker, all right. Here's the scoop. I
- 2:37Speaker 1: was looking through journals and notes and things that I'd
- 2:39Speaker 1: written over the years, and I stumbled on something from
- 2:42Speaker 1: twenty ten. Now. I've been doing radio stuff, I think
- 2:45Speaker 1: since yeah, basically fifteen fifteen or more years, and I
- 2:49Speaker 1: started doing things on a little local station in Holland here,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and they gave me five minutes every day that I
- 2:54Speaker 1: could do something with that, you know, and I called
- 2:57Speaker 1: them another day at Repcolite and this is something that
- 3:01Speaker 1: I wrote for that and basically I'm going to read
- 3:05Speaker 1: it to you now. It's basically what my spring break
- 3:08Speaker 1: twenty ten look like. You know, what it looked like
- 3:10Speaker 1: for me and what it looked like for the family.
- 3:13Speaker 1: And I tried to figure out a way to deliver
- 3:15Speaker 1: this that would make it make sense because I'm going
- 3:17Speaker 1: back in time to when the kids are littler, and
- 3:19Speaker 1: there's really no way to tell it other than what
- 3:23Speaker 1: I've come up with. So we're going to just imagine
- 3:25Speaker 1: that we're going back in time to find twenty ten Dan,
- 3:29Speaker 1: you know, sitting at his table writing all these thoughts down.
- 3:32Speaker 1: And to let you know when we go back in
- 3:34Speaker 1: time and when we come back to the present, I've
- 3:37Speaker 1: got sound effects, you know, nothing but the best on
- 3:40Speaker 1: the Repcolite Home Improvement show. We are high tech, if
- 3:43Speaker 1: nothing else. So we're going to get in our little
- 3:44Speaker 1: time machine now and travel back to twenty ten. So
- 3:49Speaker 1: imagine us swirling through the years twenty fourteen, twenty thirteen,
- 3:53Speaker 1: twenty twelve, twenty eleven. Here we go. We see Dan's
- 3:56Speaker 1: house twenty ten, We pop in through the window. Twenty ten,
- 4:00Speaker 1: sitting at the table writing things down, and here's what
- 4:04Speaker 1: he's got going. This week was crazy. I'm writing it
- 4:07Speaker 1: all down so I can look back on it later
- 4:09Speaker 1: and laugh about it. Anyway, here's what it looked like.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I'd wake up first, around seven o'clock or so, and
- 4:14Speaker 1: I'd let the dog out, and then he'd go around
- 4:17Speaker 1: when he came in the house, and he'd find everybody
- 4:20Speaker 1: and then push his cold, wet nose and his cold
- 4:22Speaker 1: wet fur all over their faces, which, of course, you know,
- 4:26Speaker 1: that meant that every single one of the kids started
- 4:29Speaker 1: off each day in a ridiculously great mood. You know,
- 4:32Speaker 1: Calb would wake up saying cheery things like I hate warnings,
- 4:36Speaker 1: I hate waking up, I hate wet dog fur, I
- 4:40Speaker 1: hate having to move when it's this early, you know,
- 4:43Speaker 1: every day, all kinds of great, happy stuff like that.
- 4:46Speaker 1: That's how we started. Well. From there, we moved smoothly
- 4:50Speaker 1: into breakfast and breakfast, breakfast just nuts. With five kids,
- 4:55Speaker 1: each kid routinely asked for something different every single day.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Every single day, nobody, not one of them would eat
- 5:03Speaker 1: the same cold cereal as the previous child did, even
- 5:06Speaker 1: if they wanted to, and I mean that, even if
- 5:09Speaker 1: they woke up craving Captain crunch. That is all they
- 5:12Speaker 1: want in this world right now is a great big
- 5:15Speaker 1: spoonful of Captain crunch, if that's what's going through their head,
- 5:18Speaker 1: and the kid next to him asked for Captain crunch boom.
- 5:21Speaker 1: They'd mentally assess what cereals had already been chosen and
- 5:25Speaker 1: then ask for one that hadn't been all because they
- 5:28Speaker 1: wanted me, you know, to have as much work as possible.
- 5:31Speaker 1: I can't think of anything else. It's the only explanation
- 5:34Speaker 1: I can come up with. Well, anyway, Eventually, mercifully, breakfast
- 5:37Speaker 1: would end, and then joy of joys, the questions about
- 5:41Speaker 1: video games would start. Now Maddie, she was ten at
- 5:44Speaker 1: the time, my oldest daughter. She would ask me if
- 5:46Speaker 1: she could play her video game well before I could
- 5:49Speaker 1: answer her. Tessa, several years younger, would ask if she
- 5:52Speaker 1: could play her video game before I could answer either
- 5:55Speaker 1: of them. Caleb, Maddie's twin brother, would say that I
- 5:58Speaker 1: wasn't being fair. I hadn't answered anybody yet, and he's
- 6:02Speaker 1: already telling me I wasn't being fair, that they played
- 6:04Speaker 1: their video games the day before, and that it should
- 6:06Speaker 1: be his turn. And then he looked at me and asked,
- 6:08Speaker 1: can I play my video game well? When those words
- 6:11Speaker 1: leave his lips. The girls start crying before I had
- 6:16Speaker 1: answered anybody, and I'd finally be forced to say, darn it, guys,
- 6:20Speaker 1: nobody's playing video games right now. Well, then, of course
- 6:23Speaker 1: more crying would happen. And then Andrew, who was seven
- 6:27Speaker 1: years old at the time, he would raise his hand.
- 6:30Speaker 1: Every question he has is a hand raised in the air.
- 6:33Speaker 1: He'd raise his hand and ask if darn it was
- 6:35Speaker 1: a bad word. So I'd reassure him it's not a
- 6:39Speaker 1: bad word, you know, And then i'd have to try
- 6:41Speaker 1: to convince him that he probably shouldn't say it. But
- 6:43Speaker 1: before I could make his little brain grasp the concept,
- 6:46Speaker 1: Caleb would start up about the weather. This was the
- 6:49Speaker 1: next series of questions. He'd peel his face off of
- 6:51Speaker 1: the window, his little tear stained face, and he'd say,
- 6:54Speaker 1: is it gonna rain all day? Dad? Well, I tell
- 6:57Speaker 1: him I don't know. I don't know it's spoke to
- 7:00Speaker 1: rain all day, but I don't technically and with absolute certainty,
- 7:05Speaker 1: know that it will do. So, you know, I've been
- 7:07Speaker 1: burned on this before earlier in the week, and I
- 7:09Speaker 1: knew I had to hedge my prognostications on the weather.
- 7:14Speaker 1: If I was even slightly off, they'd let me know,
- 7:17Speaker 1: so I played it safe, I don't know. Well. He'd
- 7:19Speaker 1: look at me for a minute, and then he'd ask
- 7:22Speaker 1: if it was cold out, Hugh, I tell him, go outside,
- 7:25Speaker 1: just go outside and check, and then you'll know. Well.
- 7:28Speaker 1: He'd simply go down and find Mom wherever she was
- 7:30Speaker 1: and ask her is it cold out? And then Mom
- 7:33Speaker 1: would tell him I don't know, and then she'd shout
- 7:35Speaker 1: at me, is it cold out? Well? Of course, after
- 7:38Speaker 1: all of that, I'd just go outside again and feel
- 7:41Speaker 1: the air, and then I'd come back and say to
- 7:43Speaker 1: everybody who cared, yes, it's cold out, And then in
- 7:47Speaker 1: a chorus, they would all say how cold? Well, you know,
- 7:50Speaker 1: without a thermometer, How in the world do you answer that?
- 7:54Speaker 1: How do you convey a specific level of cold you know?
- 7:58Speaker 1: To kids? Over the course of the I figured out
- 8:01Speaker 1: the answer. I learned that you need to say that
- 8:03Speaker 1: it's see your breath cold, or snow on the ground cold,
- 8:07Speaker 1: or goosebumps on your arm cold, or wear a sweatshirt cold,
- 8:11Speaker 1: all of those things. All of those things mean something
- 8:15Speaker 1: to kids. So I'd tell them it was one of
- 8:17Speaker 1: those kinds of cold out there. But before I could
- 8:19Speaker 1: get all of the words out of my mouth, Tessa
- 8:21Speaker 1: would ask if she could have a snack. Well, I
- 8:24Speaker 1: tell her, no, we just had breakfast. Literally, we just
- 8:27Speaker 1: had breakfast twenty minutes ago. We just ate. And then
- 8:31Speaker 1: she'd start weeping, weeping uncontrollably, which gets old instantly. So
- 8:38Speaker 1: I'd cave every single day, every single day, and then
- 8:41Speaker 1: every single day I'd tell her, you may have a
- 8:44Speaker 1: snack as long as it's and I quote something easy. Well,
- 8:49Speaker 1: she was happy, she'd march off, and then I'd find
- 8:52Speaker 1: her ten minutes later, sitting on the kitchen counter surrounded
- 8:55Speaker 1: by peanut butter, honey, a bag of bread, apples, our
- 8:59Speaker 1: apple peeler, a big butter knife, a two liter of
- 9:01Speaker 1: diet coke with floaties in it because she's been drinking
- 9:04Speaker 1: from the bottle, and a cart and of strawberries. See
- 9:07Speaker 1: this is because Tessa's idea of something easy and my
- 9:11Speaker 1: idea of something easy, they are completely different. They live
- 9:16Speaker 1: on entirely different, different planes of existence. And every single
- 9:21Speaker 1: day I fell for this. Well, when I'd see that,
- 9:23Speaker 1: I just see this chaotic mess, I'd say, darn it, Tessa,
- 9:28Speaker 1: I said something easy, right. We talked about this yesterday
- 9:32Speaker 1: and the day before. I never meant that you could
- 9:34Speaker 1: go and eat everything we have in the house every
- 9:37Speaker 1: single day. And then, of course when you do that,
- 9:40Speaker 1: she'd start crying. And then out of the corner of
- 9:42Speaker 1: my eye, I'd see Andrew's hand shoot up in the air,
- 9:44Speaker 1: and before I could call on him, he just blurt out,
- 9:48Speaker 1: I'm confused. Is darn it a bad word? And as
- 9:51Speaker 1: I'd stare at him, wondering why We've got to have
- 9:54Speaker 1: this conversation yet again, Caleb would ask for a snack.
- 9:58Speaker 1: You know how this goes. I'd say, no, no, I
- 10:01Speaker 1: just cleaned up multiple breakfasts, multiple snacks. We can wait
- 10:05Speaker 1: till lunch. I'd explained that all of that we just
- 10:09Speaker 1: need to settle. Let's just enjoy our day. Lunch is
- 10:12Speaker 1: only an hour away. And he took that like a
- 10:14Speaker 1: grown up, right, not a chance, broke down crying how
- 10:18Speaker 1: come Tessa gets one, but I can never have a snack. Well,
- 10:21Speaker 1: as I'm staring him down, Mom hollers up from the basement,
- 10:25Speaker 1: So what is the weather like? How cold is it? Anyway?
- 10:29Speaker 1: That was spring break twenty ten and we're traveling back,
- 10:34Speaker 1: so that was the past close it in on the
- 10:37Speaker 1: present and here we are to blu bloop, back in
- 10:42Speaker 1: good old twenty twenty four. And now it's time for
- 10:44Speaker 1: the paint point, or basically, as I said, the real
- 10:47Speaker 1: life point. And I think what I'm gonna do is
- 10:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna get the real life point on the other
- 10:52Speaker 1: side of the break. So you got the big fun story.
- 10:54Speaker 1: It's Labor Day. We're just kicking back here on the show.
- 10:57Speaker 1: You got the fun story. We're gonna take a break.
- 11:00Speaker 1: When we come back, I'll get to the paint point,
- 11:02Speaker 1: the real life point. That's all just ahead, stick around,
- 11:13Speaker 1: and we're back. You're listening to the repcol Light Home
- 11:15Speaker 1: improvement show sponsored by Benjamin Moore, and it's kind of
- 11:20Speaker 1: a weird one this week, kind of a weird one.
- 11:22Speaker 1: I had intended to do a best of episode because
- 11:25Speaker 1: it's the Labor Day weekend and everybody's busy doing all
- 11:29Speaker 1: kinds of last minute fun things, and maybe there's not
- 11:32Speaker 1: a ton of listeners out there, so I'm going to
- 11:35Speaker 1: do a best of. Well, I decided I did have
- 11:38Speaker 1: one thing, one brief thing I wanted to say, and
- 11:41Speaker 1: I was going to put that at the beginning the
- 11:43Speaker 1: open of the show, the paint point, the real life
- 11:45Speaker 1: point for the week and a little and behold, I
- 11:48Speaker 1: rambled on and on, and by the time I'm done
- 11:51Speaker 1: with this point, I'm going to have eaten up half
- 11:54Speaker 1: the show. Anyway, last segment, I walked you through pretty
- 11:58Speaker 1: much what my spring break in twenty ten look like
- 12:01Speaker 1: with all the little kids in the house. You know
- 12:04Speaker 1: how that played out. And now it's time to get
- 12:06Speaker 1: to the actual paint point, the real life point. And
- 12:09Speaker 1: here it is. I just completed another vacation with those
- 12:13Speaker 1: exact same kids. It's fourteen years later, but the same kids.
- 12:18Speaker 1: We went up north. We spent some time on Mackinac Island,
- 12:21Speaker 1: and then a week at a cottage on Bert Lake.
- 12:23Speaker 1: And those kids, those same kids that I just described.
- 12:29Speaker 1: They helped me prepare each meal. They helped me clean
- 12:31Speaker 1: up everything. When we were done everything, they ate normal snacks,
- 12:36Speaker 1: they cleaned up their messes. Nobody played any video games,
- 12:39Speaker 1: and nobody cried about not being able to play any
- 12:41Speaker 1: video games. We worked together. Every one of us had
- 12:45Speaker 1: their own particular job, you know, vacum and garbage duty,
- 12:48Speaker 1: the chooser of the movies that we would watch, the
- 12:51Speaker 1: Toilet Bowl, scrubber, on and on. We worked together, and
- 12:54Speaker 1: because of that, we had a lot of time to
- 12:56Speaker 1: do a lot of fun stuff. Swimming, hiking, sitting and talking. Yeah,
- 13:02Speaker 1: talking talking, not whiny conversations about who got to do
- 13:05Speaker 1: this or who didn't get to do that or whatever,
- 13:08Speaker 1: but actual, full blown, real life, grown up conversations. You know.
- 13:13Speaker 1: We talked about stories that we wanted to write, We
- 13:15Speaker 1: talked about interesting things that we read in books. We
- 13:19Speaker 1: talked about what happened at church or whatever, you know.
- 13:23Speaker 1: And then every day, every single day ended with all
- 13:26Speaker 1: of us laying on this large swimming dock at about
- 13:29Speaker 1: ten o'clock or so at night, and we'd lay out
- 13:31Speaker 1: there for an hour or more watching the stars come out.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Sometimes we just sat there, and sometimes we'd laugh and
- 13:37Speaker 1: laugh and laugh and then try to be quiet, which
- 13:40Speaker 1: makes you laugh a little more, you know, because it's
- 13:42Speaker 1: quiet time out there. But we didn't disturb anybody, I
- 13:44Speaker 1: don't think. I think we did fine. But a ton
- 13:47Speaker 1: of fun, ton of fun. Those little people that drove
- 13:49Speaker 1: me nuts way back in twenty ten, you know, they're
- 13:52Speaker 1: now some of my favorite people in the whole wide world.
- 13:54Speaker 1: And I guess you know, it'd be fair. Of course
- 13:56Speaker 1: they always were my favorite people. I owe, we love them.
- 14:00Speaker 1: They were always great. But now they're actually earning that
- 14:04Speaker 1: title of favorite people. So okay, In all of that,
- 14:07Speaker 1: in all of that, blah blah blah, what's the real
- 14:10Speaker 1: life point? What am I getting at? I guess to me,
- 14:13Speaker 1: it feels it's obvious and it's nothing new. It's not
- 14:16Speaker 1: rocket science. Probably everybody out there already knows it, and
- 14:20Speaker 1: I'm just wasting your time on a Saturday, But maybe
- 14:22Speaker 1: somebody needs to hear it. Your busy, crazy life with
- 14:26Speaker 1: little kids is going to fly by. You know, old people.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Old people say it all the time, right, that's all
- 14:33Speaker 1: we hear about. Talk to mom, you talk to your grandma.
- 14:36Speaker 1: They just talk about how time flies. Well, now I'm
- 14:39Speaker 1: aging myself because I'm saying it now, the time literally flies.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Back in twenty ten, I really don't know if I
- 14:47Speaker 1: would have believed, you know, if somebody came and told
- 14:50Speaker 1: me that fourteen years later, fourteen years down the road,
- 14:53Speaker 1: my little family's going to be functioning so tightly as
- 14:56Speaker 1: a group. If somebody told me that that the kids
- 14:58Speaker 1: were going to be working hard and getting along and
- 15:00Speaker 1: always having each other's backs you know, I don't know
- 15:03Speaker 1: that I would have really believed that. You know, back then,
- 15:06Speaker 1: I did laugh about the crazy times, you know, to
- 15:08Speaker 1: be fair to myself, I laughed about those crazy times.
- 15:11Speaker 1: I laughed about those crazy days. But they really were crazy.
- 15:15Speaker 1: They really were exhausting. I remember that they really left
- 15:18Speaker 1: me wondering how I was going to make it through.
- 15:22Speaker 1: But you know, in the end, I did. And now,
- 15:25Speaker 1: this past Saturday, my daughter Maddie moved out of the
- 15:29Speaker 1: house so she could spend a year living with a
- 15:31Speaker 1: good friend before Mattie gets married. She's engaged. We got
- 15:35Speaker 1: all kinds of big changes coming up on the horizon,
- 15:38Speaker 1: and you know, Maddie decided to move in with a friend.
- 15:41Speaker 1: She's living nearby, you know, with one of her best
- 15:43Speaker 1: friends from high school. And I know they're living it up.
- 15:46Speaker 1: They're doing girl things, they're having fun. But there's an
- 15:49Speaker 1: empty room at the end of the hallway now, and
- 15:53Speaker 1: I do not like that. You know, it's tough. I'm
- 15:56Speaker 1: happy for her. I'm excited to see her grow and
- 15:58Speaker 1: mature and all those things. And I hope she's not
- 16:00Speaker 1: fighting about video games with her friend Mallory, and I
- 16:03Speaker 1: hope she's not incessantly snacking in all of those things,
- 16:06Speaker 1: But man, that empty room, that is something else, you know.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Right now, I keep the door closed so I don't
- 16:12Speaker 1: have to see it. I've talked about it on the
- 16:14Speaker 1: show before, how and I'm sure all of you do that.
- 16:16Speaker 1: It's not like this is something I alone do. But
- 16:19Speaker 1: sometimes the kids' rooms can get a little out of hand.
- 16:21Speaker 1: They're a little messy, so I'll make sure I shut
- 16:24Speaker 1: those doors. There was one room in particular that I
- 16:26Speaker 1: would if the door was open, and I would see
- 16:29Speaker 1: that it was open, I would sneak down the hallway
- 16:31Speaker 1: looking the other way, and reach and paw until I
- 16:34Speaker 1: got my hand on the handle the doorknob, and then
- 16:36Speaker 1: I could pull the door shut and never actually see
- 16:38Speaker 1: what was in that room, you know. So I've done that.
- 16:41Speaker 1: I've blocked those rooms off because they're messy and I
- 16:43Speaker 1: don't want to see them. But this one, this room,
- 16:46Speaker 1: Maddie's room, is so it's completely barren, it's completely empty,
- 16:51Speaker 1: and I hate that look even more so I keep
- 16:53Speaker 1: that door closed too. So anyway, what am I getting at?
- 16:57Speaker 1: I guess all I'm trying to say is, if you're
- 17:00Speaker 1: twenty twenty four, your present day. Your today looks kind
- 17:04Speaker 1: of like are a little bit like what I described
- 17:06Speaker 1: my twenty ten. You know what my twenty ten look like.
- 17:10Speaker 1: If you see some comparisons, there are some similarities. I
- 17:13Speaker 1: just want to let you know, hang in there. If
- 17:16Speaker 1: you're dealing with little kids and they're driving you crazy
- 17:18Speaker 1: and you're exhausted, hang in there. It all comes around
- 17:21Speaker 1: in the end. You know. If you've got a son
- 17:23Speaker 1: or a daughter who's feeling overwhelmed with the crazy of
- 17:26Speaker 1: raising a family or making a home, just remind them
- 17:28Speaker 1: it does ease up. And most importantly, we joked about
- 17:32Speaker 1: going back in time, and I use little sound effects
- 17:34Speaker 1: and all of that, But if I could go back
- 17:36Speaker 1: in time and tell tell myself something, you know, if
- 17:40Speaker 1: I really could do that, I'd tell myself to pause,
- 17:42Speaker 1: you know, hit the pause button, take a deep breath,
- 17:45Speaker 1: stop worrying so much about everything, and just enjoy all
- 17:50Speaker 1: of these crazy times, you know, enjoy everything. I tell myself,
- 17:54Speaker 1: Enjoy everything about the little kids at those ages and
- 17:56Speaker 1: at every age as they grow up. It's just there's
- 17:59Speaker 1: so much to be had in that. If you really
- 18:02Speaker 1: can can can you know, pull it out of it
- 18:04Speaker 1: and pay attention to it. I think I did a
- 18:05Speaker 1: pretty good job with that, but I do know that
- 18:08Speaker 1: I spent way too much time wishing they were older,
- 18:11Speaker 1: thinking that was gonna make it easier and things would
- 18:14Speaker 1: be smoother, and in some instances some cases it does.
- 18:17Speaker 1: But you know, their problems get bigger too as they
- 18:20Speaker 1: get older, and they're harder to solve. So I guess
- 18:23Speaker 1: I just wish I hadn't spent so much time wishing
- 18:27Speaker 1: away certain days and I had just stopped and enjoyed more.
- 18:31Speaker 1: All right. I don't know if that says anything to
- 18:34Speaker 1: anybody out there, or if I've just wasted your Saturday
- 18:36Speaker 1: morning or part of your Saturday morning, but you know,
- 18:39Speaker 1: whether it speaks to you or not, that's the paint point.
- 18:41Speaker 1: That's the real life point for the week. Like it
- 18:44Speaker 1: or lump it, that's what I've got. All Right, We're
- 18:46Speaker 1: gonna take a break, and when we come back, I've
- 18:48Speaker 1: got the toughest George job of the summer, and it's
- 18:52Speaker 1: the last one that's all coming up. Stick around. Hello, Hey, howdy,
- 19:04Speaker 1: we're back. Everybody can breathe a sigh of relief. You
- 19:08Speaker 1: made it through all those you know, all those commercials
- 19:10Speaker 1: maybe you had a bathroom break, you know, who knows what.
- 19:13Speaker 1: You probably reheated your coffee. Whatever, you did all of that,
- 19:17Speaker 1: and now you can settle back down and just soak
- 19:20Speaker 1: in the radio goodness. You're listening to the repolite Home
- 19:23Speaker 1: improvement Show. And yeah, I am over hyping things quite
- 19:28Speaker 1: a bit. I kind of feel badly about this week.
- 19:32Speaker 1: I don't have as many projects or home improvement topics
- 19:35Speaker 1: as I normally try to have. I haven't even done
- 19:37Speaker 1: I don't think I've done any No, I haven't done
- 19:39Speaker 1: any paint stuff yet. I've said the word paint several times,
- 19:43Speaker 1: but I really don't think that counts. Yeah, normally, even
- 19:47Speaker 1: when the entertainment industry produces something that is, you know,
- 19:51Speaker 1: verifiable garbage. Even when they do that, and even when
- 19:55Speaker 1: they know that it's verifiably garbage, they still make nice,
- 19:59Speaker 1: shiny commercials about it and sell it as gold. And
- 20:03Speaker 1: for the sake of transparency, I refuse to do that.
- 20:06Speaker 1: I think this particular episode has potential, but I understand
- 20:11Speaker 1: this one might not be for you. All Right, enough
- 20:13Speaker 1: of that, it's time for the George job for the week.
- 20:16Speaker 1: In fact, this is the last George job of the
- 20:18Speaker 1: summer and very very quickly. A George job. It's just
- 20:22Speaker 1: a small job that you can tackle around the house
- 20:25Speaker 1: that will help you start to feel in control of things.
- 20:28Speaker 1: If you feel out of control. George jobs are geared
- 20:31Speaker 1: to help you feel like, Okay, you're gaining some control.
- 20:34Speaker 1: It'll help you gain some momentum and maybe it will hopefully,
- 20:37Speaker 1: you know, propel you forward and help you accomplish more
- 20:40Speaker 1: and more projects down the road. That was the idea. Well,
- 20:44Speaker 1: this particular George job that I've saved for the last
- 20:47Speaker 1: turns out to be the most difficult one of them all,
- 20:51Speaker 1: I think. So anyway, I do, and I'm giving it
- 20:54Speaker 1: to you on Labor Day weekend. And that's kind of
- 20:57Speaker 1: like I understand this. It's kind of like getting under
- 21:00Speaker 1: wear for Christmas. You know, when you're a kid. When
- 21:02Speaker 1: you're grown up, you thank God that you got underwear
- 21:05Speaker 1: for Christmas. Thank goodness, I don't have to wear what
- 21:08Speaker 1: I was wearing. But when you're a kid kind of
- 21:10Speaker 1: feels like getting you know, a big, complicated George job
- 21:13Speaker 1: on Labor Day weekend. You know, that's what it feels like.
- 21:15Speaker 1: But with all that said, I'm still going to require
- 21:19Speaker 1: as much as I have the power to require anyone,
- 21:22Speaker 1: I'm going to require that you all do this job,
- 21:25Speaker 1: every single one of you. And yes, this is a
- 21:29Speaker 1: project every one of us needs to do around our homes.
- 21:32Speaker 1: And originally I thought it was going to be a
- 21:35Speaker 1: super easy one. I really thought I was giving everybody
- 21:37Speaker 1: a break. But it turns out it was really tough
- 21:40Speaker 1: for me. Here's the deal. I was on vacation this week.
- 21:44Speaker 1: You know, this past week or so, I talked about
- 21:47Speaker 1: that ad nauseum. You've heard about it, You're sick of it.
- 21:49Speaker 1: But when I came home, I can't tell you how
- 21:52Speaker 1: bummed I was, you know, not just about coming home
- 21:55Speaker 1: and having vacation, you know, be over. But I got
- 21:58Speaker 1: home and I was completely overwhelmed. You know. I got
- 22:01Speaker 1: out of the truck and the very first thing I
- 22:03Speaker 1: see is that the yard, of course, hasn't been mowed
- 22:06Speaker 1: in ten days, and it looks knee deep. You know,
- 22:09Speaker 1: that's going to be a huge project. And then I
- 22:12Speaker 1: walk into the house and I noticed that weird house smell,
- 22:14Speaker 1: you know that I was talking about last week. I
- 22:16Speaker 1: noticed that I kind of made light of it on
- 22:18Speaker 1: the show, but it was it was gut level, depressing, disappointing,
- 22:24Speaker 1: whatever word you want to use. It hit me right
- 22:26Speaker 1: between the eyes, and it was eye opening and sad,
- 22:30Speaker 1: to say the least. Anyway, from there, we start unpacking,
- 22:33Speaker 1: and then I realized how cluttered certain parts of the
- 22:35Speaker 1: house are, And for some reason, I noticed it as
- 22:38Speaker 1: I was putting our gear and stuff away. You know,
- 22:40Speaker 1: I hadn't noticed it before. I'm noticing it now. Then
- 22:43Speaker 1: I start mowing and I see the flower beds. Oh
- 22:47Speaker 1: my goodness, the flower beds. Sweet mercy, the flower beds.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Weeds have moved in. They've displaced everything there, even the dirt.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I think it's like a mini jungle, and it's everywhere
- 23:00Speaker 1: because I've got so many flower beds. The previous owners,
- 23:05Speaker 1: I guess, lived to have flowers and huge flower beds,
- 23:08Speaker 1: and now I'm living with those those big flower beds,
- 23:12Speaker 1: and I cannot keep up on them. So I've got that.
- 23:15Speaker 1: On top of that, the squirrels have gone absolutely crazy
- 23:19Speaker 1: over all of the hickory nuts in our trees. You know,
- 23:21Speaker 1: They've covered almost every square inch of earth that I
- 23:24Speaker 1: own with these munched up, crunched up shells. Sharp, they're pointy.
- 23:30Speaker 1: It looks terrible so frustrating, so overwhelming. Depressing is a
- 23:34Speaker 1: strong word, but that's the one coming to mind right now. Anyway,
- 23:38Speaker 1: as I'm mowing, I'm looking at all of that, and
- 23:41Speaker 1: I'm remembering the little cottage that we've been staying at,
- 23:43Speaker 1: you know, the little cottage on bert Lake at Bert Lake,
- 23:47Speaker 1: that we could you know, deep clean. We could deep
- 23:49Speaker 1: clean that thing in like twenty minutes. I was thinking
- 23:52Speaker 1: about the small yard that was pristine, that was immaculate,
- 23:55Speaker 1: the flower beds that had get this flowers in them.
- 24:00Speaker 1: You know, as I thought about all of that, I
- 24:02Speaker 1: really I became frustrated. I've said that, overwhelmed with my
- 24:06Speaker 1: house and all the work that I've got to do.
- 24:09Speaker 1: You know, I get caught up, and then all of
- 24:11Speaker 1: a sudden boom, a week of life happens and it
- 24:13Speaker 1: feels like I'm miles and miles behind. And really the
- 24:16Speaker 1: sad thing here is that that's just the outdoor stuff.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Inside there are projects coming out of my ears. You
- 24:22Speaker 1: know about some of them, You know about a lot
- 24:24Speaker 1: of them, but I keep a lot of them, you know,
- 24:27Speaker 1: kind of close to the vest here. You don't know
- 24:29Speaker 1: about everything. The house. It's not a big house, it's
- 24:33Speaker 1: just a ranch, but it does kind of feel big.
- 24:35Speaker 1: You know. It feels like a lot of work, that's
- 24:37Speaker 1: for sure, And it feels overwhelming, like I said, And honestly,
- 24:40Speaker 1: most importantly, I guess when I really think about it,
- 24:43Speaker 1: it's it's embarrassing. You know, I work with paint. For
- 24:46Speaker 1: heaven's sake, I do this show. I should have, you know,
- 24:50Speaker 1: a better handle on all of this. I see people
- 24:53Speaker 1: online all the time, customers who are seemingly perfect. You know,
- 24:58Speaker 1: they're painting mudrooms, they're not going to walls, they're wallpapering ceilings,
- 25:01Speaker 1: they're installing hardwood floorists. For heaven's sake, these people are
- 25:04Speaker 1: amazing to me. And I feel terrible that I'm not
- 25:07Speaker 1: doing more, that I'm not doing better. So I'm mowing
- 25:10Speaker 1: the yard. I've got a point, trust me, just right
- 25:12Speaker 1: with me. It's Labor Day weekend. We're just kind of
- 25:15Speaker 1: strolling through the show this week. I'm mowing the yard,
- 25:18Speaker 1: and after coming home from vacation, all of this is
- 25:21Speaker 1: going through my mind. And I decided at that point,
- 25:23Speaker 1: as I'm owing that I've got forty more George jobs
- 25:27Speaker 1: to tackle and talk about on the radio. And then
- 25:29Speaker 1: as that thought's going through my mind. A sudden shaft
- 25:31Speaker 1: of light hits me. I hear angels sing, you know,
- 25:34Speaker 1: the clouds part angels sing, and I have an epiphany
- 25:38Speaker 1: and I realized that, you know, yes, I've got a
- 25:40Speaker 1: lot of George jobs to tackle, but there was one
- 25:42Speaker 1: that I needed to do first, and I knew right
- 25:44Speaker 1: then that it would be the last one that I
- 25:47Speaker 1: talk about on the radio. And like I said, it
- 25:49Speaker 1: turned out to be really tough for me, tougher than
- 25:50Speaker 1: it should have been. But I needed to do it,
- 25:52Speaker 1: and I need to keep doing it, and you need
- 25:55Speaker 1: to do it too. Now, I've spent a long time
- 25:57Speaker 1: building up to this, trying to kind of set scene here,
- 26:00Speaker 1: but here's the George job. You've got to go and
- 26:03Speaker 1: make a list of ten to fifteen things about your
- 26:07Speaker 1: home that you absolutely love. It's the opposite of pretty
- 26:11Speaker 1: much anything I think I've ever said on the show.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Don't add anything to that list that's even slightly frustrating
- 26:18Speaker 1: to you about your space. Don't add anything that needs
- 26:21Speaker 1: to be fixed before you like it. You know, when
- 26:24Speaker 1: you moved into your home, most likely you saw all
- 26:27Speaker 1: the work that needed doing, and yet yet despite that,
- 26:31Speaker 1: you still fell in love with the place, right. I
- 26:33Speaker 1: think we forget that, you know, over time, as the
- 26:36Speaker 1: years go by, we forget about that, you know, the
- 26:38Speaker 1: first love, those moments, you know, when we first see
- 26:41Speaker 1: our house. If you like home improvement, if you're big
- 26:44Speaker 1: into painting, if you follow people who do all of
- 26:47Speaker 1: this work in their own homes, you most likely find
- 26:50Speaker 1: yourself slipping into home envy. I would think a lot
- 26:54Speaker 1: of us do. Anyway. I can't speak for everybody, but
- 26:56Speaker 1: a lot of us probably slip into home envy or
- 26:58Speaker 1: home frustration. You know, we envy their homes or were
- 27:01Speaker 1: really frustrated about ours, something along those lines. If you're
- 27:04Speaker 1: constantly watching what these people do, and if that's something
- 27:07Speaker 1: you kind of like to do, If all you do
- 27:10Speaker 1: is look at the work that you've got to do
- 27:11Speaker 1: around the house, what's really easy to lose the happiness
- 27:15Speaker 1: and the fun that goes with having a house, or
- 27:18Speaker 1: at least to let the peace and joy fade a
- 27:20Speaker 1: little bit or be tarnished. I've sure done it. In fact,
- 27:23Speaker 1: when I was mowing after getting home from vacation, I'm
- 27:26Speaker 1: walking around thinking I just needed to move, I needed
- 27:28Speaker 1: to start over, start fresh, you know, a clean burn,
- 27:32Speaker 1: and we'll just rebuild. You know, my ridiculous brain told
- 27:34Speaker 1: me that if I just started fresh, then it would
- 27:37Speaker 1: be okay. You know, that's so dumb for so many reasons.
- 27:41Speaker 1: One of them, the primary reason, is that the only
- 27:44Speaker 1: problems with the house are problems that I've caused, either
- 27:48Speaker 1: by action or inaction. You know, I'm the problem. Wherever
- 27:52Speaker 1: I go, there goes my problem. So just starting over
- 27:56Speaker 1: that's not going to fix anything. Secondly, I love this
- 27:59Speaker 1: house when we moved in. I've just lost sight of
- 28:02Speaker 1: that because I'm trying to compete, you know, in my
- 28:04Speaker 1: own mind, maybe with the experts, the influencers, the designers
- 28:08Speaker 1: that I'm seeing that you're seeing in social media, you know,
- 28:11Speaker 1: on and on and on. It's good to drive yourself
- 28:14Speaker 1: to be better. That's a good thing, but you know,
- 28:16Speaker 1: that's a losing game for me in a lot of ways.
- 28:18Speaker 1: I've got a lot of other things that I've got
- 28:20Speaker 1: to do. I work. I have a job, you know,
- 28:22Speaker 1: forty forty eight forty whatever hours a week. I've got
- 28:25Speaker 1: five kids, two dogs. I do a lot of the cooking,
- 28:28Speaker 1: all of the cooking. You get it, you know, you
- 28:31Speaker 1: do the same thing you do all of that. Everybody
- 28:33Speaker 1: out there has a life and we live into that
- 28:36Speaker 1: and those are the things that take priority. We don't
- 28:38Speaker 1: have lots of extra bonus time. So anyway, I started
- 28:41Speaker 1: looking at my house as I mowed, and I started
- 28:43Speaker 1: trying to come up with the things that I loved,
- 28:46Speaker 1: you know, just as they were, without needing to have
- 28:48Speaker 1: lots of changes made. And it was a really simple
- 28:50Speaker 1: exercise in gratefulness. And crazy enough, it's not always easy
- 28:55Speaker 1: to be grateful, but it does get easier as you go.
- 28:58Speaker 1: So I started looking at my yard. That's that's right,
- 29:00Speaker 1: you know, began looking because that's what I was doing.
- 29:02Speaker 1: I was mowing, and I realized how glad I was
- 29:05Speaker 1: when I found this house thirteen years ago or so,
- 29:07Speaker 1: and it had such a beautiful, big yard. You know,
- 29:10Speaker 1: the kids spent a lot of years playing baseball, tossing
- 29:13Speaker 1: a football around and just running around out here. We
- 29:16Speaker 1: came from a house in town and Zealand that had
- 29:19Speaker 1: like a postage stamp sized yard and the kids could
- 29:22Speaker 1: barely do anything out there. Now, when we moved here,
- 29:25Speaker 1: we didn't need to go to the park to play.
- 29:27Speaker 1: The park was outside our front door. Yes, it's work
- 29:30Speaker 1: work to maintain that yard. But I love that about
- 29:33Speaker 1: the house. I still do. So there we go. There
- 29:35Speaker 1: was a good thing that I found that made me
- 29:37Speaker 1: feel better about what I was monkeying with. You know,
- 29:39Speaker 1: as I'm mowing, then I'm looking around, and I noticed
- 29:42Speaker 1: the old fifties brick that makes up, you know, the
- 29:45Speaker 1: bulk of our house. It's an old ranch house. It's
- 29:47Speaker 1: nothing special, nothing special. You've heard the rest of my house.
- 29:50Speaker 1: You know, it's nothing special. But I remembered as I
- 29:53Speaker 1: was thinking about it, you know, trying to make my list,
- 29:56Speaker 1: I remembered that when we were looking for houses, for
- 29:58Speaker 1: some reason, I can't expec but for some reason, my
- 30:01Speaker 1: dream house is a brick ranch with a big yard.
- 30:03Speaker 1: You know, that's what I wanted. I always called them
- 30:05Speaker 1: little Grandpa and Grandma houses, you know, the little brick
- 30:08Speaker 1: houses that you see with those gazing globes or whatever
- 30:11Speaker 1: those things are called in the flower beds. You know,
- 30:13Speaker 1: I don't have the gazing globe, but I've got the
- 30:15Speaker 1: brick ranch. I've got exactly what i'd been looking for.
- 30:18Speaker 1: I'd just kind of forgotten about it. Then I thought about,
- 30:21Speaker 1: you know, all the space that we've got inside yes,
- 30:24Speaker 1: it's a lot of area to clean, but I've got
- 30:26Speaker 1: five kids, and there are times, even though we get along,
- 30:29Speaker 1: there are times where it's really nice that everybody can
- 30:32Speaker 1: wander off to a different part of the house and
- 30:34Speaker 1: just crash there without being stacked on top of anybody else.
- 30:37Speaker 1: You know. Again, at our old house, we were all
- 30:39Speaker 1: stacked in like we were trying to make space saving
- 30:42Speaker 1: an Olympics sport. Now we can expand we can breathe
- 30:45Speaker 1: a little without, you know, having to smell everybody around us.
- 30:49Speaker 1: I could go on and on. I sat down and
- 30:51Speaker 1: I made a long list of the things that I
- 30:53Speaker 1: love about my place, and it was really really helpful.
- 30:56Speaker 1: It walked me kind of off the crazy ledge and
- 30:58Speaker 1: I realized I had a pretty good thing going here.
- 31:01Speaker 1: I realized that even if I'm not cranking out project
- 31:04Speaker 1: after project, I still have a good place to live
- 31:07Speaker 1: and raise a family. And for me, when I did that,
- 31:09Speaker 1: some of the stress and anxiety faded just a bit. Now,
- 31:12Speaker 1: I know it's sappy, I know it's touchy feely, blah
- 31:15Speaker 1: blah blah, all of that stuff. To make up lists
- 31:18Speaker 1: about what you like about your home or your kitchen
- 31:20Speaker 1: or your bathroom or whatever is really weighing you down.
- 31:22Speaker 1: I know that's a little sappy, and I know people
- 31:25Speaker 1: out there. I know because I get people. There's a
- 31:28Speaker 1: group of you thinking that this is ridiculous. You know,
- 31:31Speaker 1: what good does that do? It's just feel goods? You know,
- 31:34Speaker 1: how does that help you get anything done? Well? To
- 31:36Speaker 1: those people, and you know that's usually how my brain
- 31:39Speaker 1: would work as well, So to those people. To me,
- 31:41Speaker 1: I'd say, look, am I really lacking in lists of
- 31:45Speaker 1: things that I hate or want to change about my house?
- 31:48Speaker 1: Is that something I'm lacking? Well? For me, no, I
- 31:51Speaker 1: don't know about you, but I've got an abundance of
- 31:54Speaker 1: those lists. I know what annoys me, and I know
- 31:56Speaker 1: what I'd like to change. But when it came to
- 31:58Speaker 1: the things that I love about my house, even you know,
- 32:00Speaker 1: in their current states of imperfection, when it came to
- 32:03Speaker 1: those lists, well I really had to dig and reach
- 32:06Speaker 1: for them. They were there, and they were really good
- 32:08Speaker 1: when I found them, but they weren't the first things
- 32:11Speaker 1: in my mind. And you know, while lists of projects
- 32:13Speaker 1: to tackle and fix are good, you've got to have them.
- 32:16Speaker 1: They help you get things done. I really do think
- 32:18Speaker 1: that taking a quick break and just recentering yourself and
- 32:22Speaker 1: kind of reconnecting with all of the good stuff that
- 32:24Speaker 1: you've got going on. Doing that, that is a nice
- 32:27Speaker 1: breath of fresh air. So that's your George job for
- 32:29Speaker 1: the week. It was a long one, long winded one.
- 32:32Speaker 1: It's labor Day weekend. We're just having fun here and
- 32:34Speaker 1: everybody has to do that job. I'm requiring it, sending
- 32:38Speaker 1: around people to double check on you later this week.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Ten to fifteen things that you love about your house
- 32:43Speaker 1: as is. Do that, take the time to do it,
- 32:45Speaker 1: and I promise, as much as anybody can promise, you
- 32:48Speaker 1: know on the radio, I promise you're going to feel
- 32:50Speaker 1: a lot better about your home. And feeling better really
- 32:53Speaker 1: about your home energizes us to jump in and start
- 32:56Speaker 1: making the changes that we want to see accomplished down
- 32:58Speaker 1: the road. All right, let's stop there, take a break.
- 33:02Speaker 1: When we come back, I've got a very quick list
- 33:04Speaker 1: of simple must have tools that you need to budget
- 33:06Speaker 1: for and acquire. That's all coming up next. Stay right
- 33:09Speaker 1: there and we're back. And yeah, I admit it, it's
- 33:18Speaker 1: been a bit of a lightweight episode. A lot of
- 33:20Speaker 1: touchy feely stuff, a lot of stuff I don't really
- 33:23Speaker 1: know how to categorize. You're listening to the Repco Light
- 33:26Speaker 1: Home improvement show sponsored by Benjamin Moore, and really, really,
- 33:30Speaker 1: I'm just taking it a bit easy on you guys
- 33:32Speaker 1: out there and on me because it's Labor Day, right,
- 33:36Speaker 1: It's the last big holiday we're going to get before Thanksgiving,
- 33:39Speaker 1: at least a lot of us. Some of us will
- 33:40Speaker 1: get some extra sprinkled in there, But for me at least,
- 33:44Speaker 1: I think Thanksgiving is the next one I get to
- 33:46Speaker 1: enjoy if I make it that far. But even though
- 33:49Speaker 1: we've been having fun, we can't phone it in for
- 33:51Speaker 1: the whole episode. So let's get serious. Let's get our
- 33:53Speaker 1: serious faces on for this last segment, and let's talk
- 33:57Speaker 1: about a few tools that you absolutely you'd budget for
- 34:01Speaker 1: and then add to your arsenal at home if you
- 34:03Speaker 1: don't already have them. They're not stunners. They're not new
- 34:06Speaker 1: things that you've never heard of. You're not going to
- 34:08Speaker 1: gasp and just be stunned by the brilliance, you know,
- 34:11Speaker 1: flowing over the airwaves. But if you don't have these things,
- 34:15Speaker 1: I really think you can't go wrong. So here they
- 34:17Speaker 1: are utterly simple and straightforward. You need to pick up
- 34:20Speaker 1: an air compressor, you need to get a trim nailer,
- 34:23Speaker 1: and you need to acquire a tire inflator with a gauge.
- 34:27Speaker 1: You know, all these things that will work with that
- 34:28Speaker 1: air compressor. All right, let's break it down. When it
- 34:31Speaker 1: comes to air compressors. There are you know, tons of
- 34:34Speaker 1: options out there, and really what you should get is
- 34:37Speaker 1: going to depend on what you want to do with it.
- 34:41Speaker 1: I'm not going to go into all of that here.
- 34:42Speaker 1: I'm going to devote a segment in the next few
- 34:44Speaker 1: weeks to talking about air compressors and all the different
- 34:47Speaker 1: options and will go really in depth on it and
- 34:49Speaker 1: help you figure out which one's best for you depending
- 34:52Speaker 1: on what you want to do with it. In this segment,
- 34:54Speaker 1: I'm really just talking about typical home use, you know,
- 34:57Speaker 1: inflating some tires, nailing up trim, things like that. If
- 35:01Speaker 1: you're just going to be doing the basics, you can
- 35:03Speaker 1: find small pancake air compressors for under one hundred bucks. Now,
- 35:07Speaker 1: these don't have huge tank capacity, so they're going to
- 35:10Speaker 1: run more often, they won't run as many tools at
- 35:12Speaker 1: the same time, things like that, but they're small and light,
- 35:16Speaker 1: they're easy to transport, and they will do the basics
- 35:19Speaker 1: that most people need from time to time, So snag
- 35:22Speaker 1: one of those, a pancake air compressor or an air
- 35:24Speaker 1: compressor of any kind. Snag it through the legal exchange
- 35:27Speaker 1: of currency, want to be clear, and then when you
- 35:30Speaker 1: do that, if you do any amount of projects around
- 35:32Speaker 1: your home, make sure that you grab a nail gun
- 35:35Speaker 1: to go with it. Just like compressors, there are a
- 35:37Speaker 1: lot of different options out there. Pin nailers, brad nailers,
- 35:40Speaker 1: trim finish nailers all will fire different gauge nails and
- 35:44Speaker 1: you really do need to do a little research on
- 35:46Speaker 1: that to make sure you pick up the one that's
- 35:48Speaker 1: most suited to the projects you tackle. And again, just
- 35:51Speaker 1: like the compressors, will devote a segment to that in
- 35:53Speaker 1: the future and kind of dig through it. But with
- 35:56Speaker 1: that said, these nail guns, they generally can be picked
- 35:59Speaker 1: up or anywhere from thirty bucks on up. Going out
- 36:02Speaker 1: cheapo isn't always the wisest way to go, but if
- 36:05Speaker 1: you're only going to use it once in a while,
- 36:07Speaker 1: that might help you be able to acquire a couple
- 36:10Speaker 1: different ones so you can cover more projects either way,
- 36:13Speaker 1: look into that, look into getting a nail gun for
- 36:15Speaker 1: your air compressor. You got to get that air compressor first.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Nail gun is not going to work. You can't put
- 36:20Speaker 1: the hose on and just blow through it and hope
- 36:22Speaker 1: for the best. You need the air compressor, right, that's first,
- 36:26Speaker 1: then the nail gun on top of that. The next
- 36:28Speaker 1: thing you should acquire. The next must have tool is
- 36:32Speaker 1: a tire inflator with a gauge. With a tire gauge.
- 36:36Speaker 1: That's important. And really, when I think about it, I
- 36:39Speaker 1: might I probably should have put this in before the
- 36:44Speaker 1: nail gun. I think it's more important than the nail gun.
- 36:46Speaker 1: You know, when I got my compressor, I used that
- 36:48Speaker 1: nail gun that I bought on a number of different projects,
- 36:51Speaker 1: a lot of projects, and it really simplified the work.
- 36:54Speaker 1: It sped things along. I was able to work faster,
- 36:57Speaker 1: more professionally, and all of that with a nailer. So
- 36:59Speaker 1: if you do that kind of work, like I said,
- 37:01Speaker 1: it's great, it's important you love it. But we all
- 37:04Speaker 1: have tires. We've all got car tires, spare tires, bike tires,
- 37:08Speaker 1: lawnmower tires, wheelbarrow tires. We've got all these tires. And
- 37:12Speaker 1: if there're anything like mine, most of them are constantly
- 37:16Speaker 1: in need of tweaking. You know the other day. For example,
- 37:19Speaker 1: just the other day, my daughter called me that she
- 37:21Speaker 1: had a flat tire. So I get that call and
- 37:23Speaker 1: I drive home intending to fill it up. I knew
- 37:25Speaker 1: I had that compressor, but all the way home, I'm
- 37:28Speaker 1: trying to remember where my tire gauge was. I have
- 37:30Speaker 1: like four of them, five of them. I don't even
- 37:32Speaker 1: know how many, but nobody knows where they are, me included.
- 37:36Speaker 1: It's just it's like the Bermuda triangle. When things come
- 37:39Speaker 1: to my house, who knows where they go. We use
- 37:41Speaker 1: them once and that's it. So I'm driving home thinking
- 37:43Speaker 1: up a plan where to start looking. But turns out
- 37:46Speaker 1: I was even smarter than I give myself credit for,
- 37:49Speaker 1: because almost a year ago, based on a recommendation that
- 37:52Speaker 1: we literally gave out on this very show, I bought
- 37:55Speaker 1: a tire inflator for the compressor with a tire gauge
- 37:58Speaker 1: built into it. So I got that phone call from
- 38:01Speaker 1: Maddie and in ten minutes, the tire was inflated to
- 38:04Speaker 1: the right pressure and she was able to drive it
- 38:06Speaker 1: to the shop to get it fixed. Buying an air
- 38:08Speaker 1: compressor and a nailer and a tire gauge. I know
- 38:11Speaker 1: that's not really the pinnacle of excitement. Very few of
- 38:14Speaker 1: us rush home to unbox those items, you know, just
- 38:17Speaker 1: so we can stare at them and marvel at them.
- 38:19Speaker 1: But I speak from experience here. When you get that
- 38:22Speaker 1: flat tire call and you can go home and solve
- 38:24Speaker 1: that in minutes, that's pretty great. When you decide to
- 38:28Speaker 1: finish installing the trim in your bathroom or wherever, and
- 38:31Speaker 1: you've got the nailer and the compressor, you're gonna find
- 38:34Speaker 1: it's a lot more fun than you may think. Now,
- 38:36Speaker 1: these are tools you're not going to use every single day,
- 38:38Speaker 1: but when you need them, you're going to be thrilled
- 38:40Speaker 1: that you've got them. All Right, that's it. That's all
- 38:42Speaker 1: the time we've got. We're gonna have to wrap this
- 38:44Speaker 1: one up. Before I completely send you all off to
- 38:46Speaker 1: have a great Labor Day weekend, I want to let
- 38:48Speaker 1: you know that we're running a sale on Benjamin Moore,
