- 0:02[SPEAKER_01]: Hi, folks.
- 0:02[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the next episode of Film Study.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_01]: This is Ken McCusik.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_01]: And we're here for the match-ups episode.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_01]: I'm joined by my friend and co-host Frazier to bar.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_01]: Frazier, how you doing?
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: Doing good, Ken.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_00]: Got to be back on for another episode.
- 0:14[SPEAKER_00]: Had a real stinker boring game last week against Tennessee Titans.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: Unfortunately, the Lamar got her, but still got the Dwayne.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_00]: And looking to a really tough match-up against Atlanta, Sunday night.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_01]: was a game, Atlanta is white hot right now.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_01]: They've just beat the Saints 45, 24.
- 0:36[SPEAKER_01]: They're up to two and two after winning the two games at Michael Panics has started losing the two games that Cooper Rush has started.
- 0:44[SPEAKER_01]: Raven's fans can certainly understand that.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_01]: And obviously, the Ravens right now, not in a great spot to face the Atlanta Falcons, we're going to talk about a few of these things on the defense aid offense shows when we get to that one.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_01]: But start us off here.
- 0:59[SPEAKER_01]: What do you think is the biggest matchup?
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, my first matchup is Raven's quick pressure versus panics.
- 1:06[SPEAKER_00]: I think
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: He is not going to be as mobile as he has been in the past.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_00]: He's someone as soon as he gets flushed interior.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: He's trying to get rid of that ball immediately.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: So I think if we can get Matt a BK really going this game in terms of just sliding a guy off of him and trying to get media pressure on pennies, maybe we see a NES people's his games for past rush, but I don't anticipate that because
- 1:34[SPEAKER_00]: We're probably going to be majority three down linemen.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_00]: If online is really going to be want to be successful running the ball.
- 1:39[SPEAKER_00]: So let's see how that works.
- 1:40[SPEAKER_00]: But I do want to see us get him off his spot.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: And then once he has to be forced to go to the outside, I think my green and Tobias Robinson can clean up if need be.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: But I think the reason why if we get him off his spot,
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: It will work is because he isn't super super accurate to begin with, he missed a halt route in the red zone thing in the first half.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it just hit the dirt two yards before the receiver, so I think if we can get him in some unabated situations with the past rush, it's just going to build well for turnovers.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that sounds certainly good.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: I think that the Ravens have some opportunities to try some different past first things.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think it will.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_01]: probably stick with a foreman rush more, but you know, it's no all the tricks, all the playbook, all the things that mentor could possibly ski him up, they all need to be on the table for a game like this where the ravens are clearly or an underdog on the road, backs against the wall, but starting Tyler Huntley instead of a large accent, all the reduced offensive efficiency coming that comes from that.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_01]: And a lot of problems that Defence has had
- 2:58[SPEAKER_01]: test they faced in terms of an opposing offensive.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: Dallas was good too, but I think actually Atlanta right now, I may be fear just a little bit more than I did Dallas honestly.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_01]: So one quick pressure methodology talked about this briefly earlier tonight was that the possibility of rushing forward, but dropping an interior lineman, which we did, would not normally do, so you could drop Michael Pierce, you could drop Colleus Campbell, you could drop
- 3:28[SPEAKER_01]: And then because panics is a less mobile quarterback now have that guy be a guy who can still handle the spy duties and some of the short zone duties that that that you normally and mentor is not so far trusted to it to a big man.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_01]: So I think it's it's a it's a.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_01]: He's one addition option.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: He's been he's given Project Washington opportunity and those drop coverage is he had the chance at a pick, but did not be seen to come up with it, but I think right tipped it.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_00]: This game it might happen.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_00]: Um, I get also with T Rob dropping coverage too.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_00]: So I think he's going to try and bring a lot of different kind of sim pressures in terms of getting to the quarterback and getting pennies on the spot.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 4:10[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: That's a good one.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to go with the, you know, in the same vein opposite Michael Panics.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_01]: I think the play of the two safety is really important.
- 4:18[SPEAKER_01]: So Malachi starts in June Hawkins versus Panics.
- 4:22[SPEAKER_01]: He started the last two games.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, the set land of team looks entirely different.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: The Ravens.
- 4:26[SPEAKER_01]: I think need a specialized potentially gimmick strategy to bracket Drake London.
- 4:31[SPEAKER_01]: He's a receiver that's had tremendous success.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_01]: He gets a high volume of their targets.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_01]: The, the,
- 4:38[SPEAKER_01]: previous Ravens opponent.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: The Titans went away from Nate Wiggins.
- 4:42[SPEAKER_01]: Basically for the entire game, Wiggins only had one target.
- 4:45[SPEAKER_01]: It was incomplete.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: You didn't have a penalty as well.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_01]: But if you look at it like a heat map or a dot map of where the pass is went on the game, it went primarily against the left corner back.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: So I had the right corner back on the offensive left side.
- 4:58[SPEAKER_01]: and away from Nate Wiggins.
- 5:00[SPEAKER_01]: So there's two possibilities.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_01]: One is to have Wiggins' trail London directly, which they could do.
- 5:08[SPEAKER_01]: A possibility number two is you line up a quarterback opposite London, whoever that is, and you have a safety over the top in a specialized gimmick defense that they would use.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_01]: try and take him out of the game.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_01]: The guy that used that against was Randy Moss in the 2009 AFC Wildcar game at New England.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_01]: That's a game they won 33 to 14.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: They intercepted Brady a bunch and had the turnovers early on that led to a 24-in-nothing score in the first period.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_01]: First quarter, I think that's something that could happen again.
- 5:39[SPEAKER_01]: Not the one side of game necessarily, but I think it's a way to take Drake London out of the game.
- 5:45[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I really believe that.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think you really can't travel with Nate Wiggins because of just how versatile London is in and out of the slide being able to get motion.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: You can't really put Nate in that situation where if he does make the wrong move, he does have great recovery speed, but Drake London is a great receiver, so he's gonna get his if that is the case.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_00]: It's good that at least one side of the field is essentially locked down with Wiggins.
- 6:14[SPEAKER_00]: And I really want to see who's he had a good game.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_00]: It was unfortunate in terms of some of the throws that he had on him in the first half, but overall, if he settled in, and it's going to be a good experience for him.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he gave a big, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh,
- 6:28[SPEAKER_01]: DPI, I am an eye-o-man or entering the game.
- 6:33[SPEAKER_01]: But, yep, London has 14.2 yards per target for the year right now.
- 6:39[SPEAKER_01]: No one else has over 7.4 in terms of the target share.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_01]: He gets pretty much all of the wide receiver targets.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_01]: So, Johod Dawtson has, I think, 14 targets is the next tire on team after London's 25.
- 6:56[SPEAKER_01]: past threat out of the backfield, but I think it starts with solid coverage of London, London is not an extraordinary athlete, he's a big guy, certainly tough to cover from that respect.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: I think he is that rare type of receiver that you could actually cover someone in the slot with one of these gimmicks.
- 7:12[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, it's not a whip route runner who's going to beat you that way directly, and if he does, you know, they're probably doing your favor to
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: But he does run difficulty because he has the opportunity to do have a three-way go.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: So, any risk like that clover cup, looking to go, they call his issues.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: All right, we'll take a break.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_01]: We'll come back down with the second matchups.
- 7:42[SPEAKER_01]: All right, we're back.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_01]: Tell us, what did you have in mind for number two?
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, for match up number two, I have the Ravens tackling versus the Falcons playmakers.
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, tackling has definitely been an issue the past couple of weeks, honestly, all season except the first game, um, really saw a lot of that in the beginning of last game, against the titans, um, some poor tackling by, uh, Wagan, not Wagan's, um, Stark again, uh, I think,
- 8:16[SPEAKER_00]: What do you think the problem with the tackling is, what could the Ravens do to solve that?
- 8:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's a hard problem to solve in season.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_01]: They go back to fundamentals.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_01]: They've done some of that.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: There's been some video coming out of camp where they've been attacking the tackling donut.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_01]: In the 30 minutes at the beginning of camp.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_01]: They can do some of those kind of things.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: But if they don't have a great tackling team, it's really hard to make them a great tackling team.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_01]: I think they have elements this team.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_01]: They're already good.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_01]: I think it's a matter of probably
- 8:49[SPEAKER_01]: Staying on focus, doing the dude, just remembering what your job is on a down-by-down basis and swarming through the footballs, the other thing.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: You can improve tackling simply by having the first guy's miss, not matter, because he turns a redirects the ball carry in such a way it makes it easier for the second guy even if he misses the tackle in that process.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_01]: And that's, you know, I've always said for you, there's miss tackles and there's miss tackles, but if you turn a turning running back, 135 yards in the backfield, instead of going north,
- 9:20[SPEAKER_01]: Halfway backwards and towards the sideline, you've done your job in a lot of cases.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_01]: You may even create a better result from that kind of a mistackle.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_01]: So I'd be hopeful, this is a very, very talented group of playmakers.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_01]: This really leads directly into my second.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: match-ups element, which is a lead-ford and mid-turv versus the Atlanta run game, and this is the defensive side, but lead-ford is extremely familiar with the Atlanta wide-zones game, and the Ravens run it in practice, so it wouldn't surprise me if lead-ford and mentor talk about how to devise a run plan to stop this wide-zones game, and
- 10:00[SPEAKER_01]: The problem is the playmakers are just outstanding.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: B. Jean Robinson has 5.8 yards per attempt, a 60% success rate, which is absurd, but he actually set the all-time record for, I think, was 300 plus carries a couple of years ago, when he was at 60% or very close to it.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_01]: And Brian Robinson has 4.4 yards per carry, and a 59% success rate.
- 10:21[SPEAKER_01]: He's not a trivial number of carry.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_01]: He said 45 carries are thereabouts.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_01]: and also done an excellent job.
- 10:29[SPEAKER_01]: So they have certainly a two-headed monster from that perspective.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_01]: Both of them break a fair number of tackles, both more than Henry about 20.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_01]: Their ratio is about 0.2 zero and Henry's about 0.145.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_01]: Not exactly what you'd expect, but Robinson is a very patient.
- 10:46[SPEAKER_01]: runner think of like Levy on Bell from his early years, particularly as a cutback guy, when he hits the hole, he has a lot of burst, and that's where the speed can get you as well.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_01]: So very much a one of the best backs in the entire national football league, and I think what will help the Ravens, is that they practice versus a very similar scheme all week long.
- 11:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, definitely make
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: B. Jean Robinson, he opposes no other running back in the league right now.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: I think he's probably number one.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: A little Jonathan Taylor was kind of comparable and I think we were able to handle him.
- 11:33[SPEAKER_00]: In at least in the second half pretty well.
- 11:37[SPEAKER_00]: I just don't.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: want them to run away with the game the way that they did against the Saints.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_00]: The Ravens really need to anticipate seeing probably 15 to 20% base defense this game, especially if Atlanta really does double down on the run.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: I think they're going to put the Ravens in a situation where they have no choice but to go back to base and then put three linebackers on the field.
- 12:04[SPEAKER_01]: They've had 11 base snaps each of the last two games.
- 12:09[SPEAKER_01]: And they did play 143 base snap, which I think what you're alluding to this last game.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they're gonna go to a fourth, three base, but I think they'll use a lot of three, four base, which is their, you know, been their private thing.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_01]: They've been very successful stopping, they're run with that.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_01]: And unfortunately, the reason why they go to a ton of ace in the game would be they're losing in the game and unfortunately there's a pretty good chance that will be happening at some point and ribs cannot afford to make mistakes.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, be in selves with penalties and other things.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: That might show up on on the other side of the ball when we only talk about that.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_01]: I did want to mention that there's a lot of yards after contact in this offense, they don't have a great yards before contact number, but 4.20 yards per attempt after contact is absurd.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_01]: It's a terrific number and
- 12:57[SPEAKER_01]: That's the PFF version of that, which means they use any kind of touch to determine that first contact.
- 13:03[SPEAKER_01]: So you get a little bit different numbers depending on who's system they're using, whether it's first forceful contact or first contact committee sword.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_01]: And then of course, Jake Matthews injured the game against the Saints.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_01]: I potentially fearally large loss, but he was not playing well.
- 13:20[SPEAKER_01]: And frankly, the rest of the line is all playing much better than him.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_01]: You know, they're all healthy.
- 13:25[SPEAKER_01]: So it still looks like a tough out for the Ravens here.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I think in lieu of my tackling theme, I think I'm looking to Marlon Humphrey and someone like Burke, who's going to go out there and punch the ball out at a beach on his hand, and then that's the one way you can nullify someone that explosive have been thinking about holding the ball tight instead of running freely.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_01]: All right, that's a good one.
- 13:52[SPEAKER_01]: So second man of the ball, good, good elements of, you know, that the Ravens have had some good, second man play this year was really nice to see a Kyle Hamilton get a force fumble like that this last week.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_01]: Frays you're always a pleasure doing this show with you.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_01]: Tell folks where they can took football with you online.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, you guys can reach me on Twitter slash XF on a score at rate of eight.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: That's F on a score R, A, V, E, A.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_01]: All right, outstanding.
- 14:16[SPEAKER_01]: We do not get too many questions for the matchup show, but we'd like to hear from you.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_01]: If you have something, use film study, mailbag at gmail.com, and note specifically, you'd like this to be to relate to the matchup show, perhaps you're thinking about the next game and what might be a difficult matchup for the Ravens or a key matchup, and we'd love to hear from you, specifically, we'll take a question or two per episode if we can get that.
- 14:38[SPEAKER_01]: For Frazier to par, this is Ken McEusex and goodbye.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk to you next time.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_01]: Well, on matchups.
