- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Cracking this Morning, a presentation of the Cracking
- 0:05Speaker 1: Audio network. Ken Sports Radio ninety three point three kJ
- 0:09Speaker 1: R FM. Here's nice about me from the first of
- 0:12Speaker 1: back to back.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Once again, Mike Betting with you for Cranking this morning
- 0:16Speaker 2: on a Monday, January fifth, Well, last time the Cracking
- 0:19Speaker 2: played back on Friday. Let's this slip. The highlights here
- 0:23Speaker 2: tell the story as far as how crazy and topsy
- 0:26Speaker 2: turvy this game got and ended in Vancouver.
- 0:30Speaker 3: Vancouver.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Back to the line, right, you're it just holds it
- 0:33Speaker 4: in and gives it away O'Connor. Two on oh shorthanded O'Connor,
- 0:38Speaker 4: sure what, Back to O'Connor, he missed it. Two on
- 0:41Speaker 4: oh shorthanded Canucks whift. Here come the Cracking back in
- 0:45Speaker 4: Burt the captain, turns it back over and Drew O'Connor
- 0:48Speaker 4: wants more, sends it up the left side and.
- 0:50Speaker 3: We'll give Chase. Oh, it's a good BacT check by
- 0:52Speaker 3: Shane right to break up that. Two on oh for.
- 0:55Speaker 4: Vancouver Seattle back to center from the red line. Three
- 0:58Speaker 4: on two in and for mccam every high slot bar circle.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Stevenson scores Chandler Stevenson a power play goal eleven oh
- 1:11Speaker 4: seven to go on the second cracking make a whole
- 1:15Speaker 4: lot of something out.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Of seemingly nothing. It's a two to nothing lead while
- 1:19Speaker 3: power play goal for Seattle. It starts back at the
- 1:22Speaker 3: cracking end of the ice. Obviously they get to lucky
- 1:24Speaker 3: on that two on Ozero in Vancouver to get going
- 1:26Speaker 3: the other way, McCann coming across the blue line makes
- 1:29Speaker 3: a nice drop pass to every Every waits for Chandler
- 1:33Speaker 3: Stevenson to get open on his off wing to the
- 1:36Speaker 3: left of Dempko, puts it on his stick, one timer,
- 1:39Speaker 3: two nothing, cracking.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Winterton with one eight to play the period back in front,
- 1:43Speaker 4: tap dog all this scar Ben Meers station right out
- 1:49Speaker 4: in front. Ryan Winterton threads the beetle and the Seattle
- 1:55Speaker 4: cracking back up by a pair.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Three to one.
- 1:58Speaker 3: Wait in the second right and winter did down the
- 2:01Speaker 3: right side. He's a right handed shot finds Ben Myers
- 2:04Speaker 3: going hard in that perfect timing on Myers to be
- 2:07Speaker 3: right on top of the blue paint as Winterton sent
- 2:09Speaker 3: the puck there in a just a redirect in past Demco.
- 2:13Speaker 3: That two goal leads back intact free one cord ross
- 2:16Speaker 3: right side puts all the brakes against done, pup top
- 2:19Speaker 3: gonick shot bought.
- 2:20Speaker 4: Off by the car right down, slip my hole and
- 2:23Speaker 4: the storm. Lenis Carlson signs a two year extension earlier
- 2:34Speaker 4: today gets his tenth of the season tonight, we're time
- 2:39Speaker 4: for three down that even theirs two goals last night,
- 2:44Speaker 4: snapping a nine game goals rout that game on his
- 2:49Speaker 4: stick left handed shot with the signal, picks up the puck,
- 2:54Speaker 4: booze raining down, Ben ears left circle four hand in
- 2:58Speaker 4: the back hand to the slot on what a move
- 3:01Speaker 4: starves bang bang, not even airs?
- 3:06Speaker 3: When's it in the shutout? Bob Matty Veneer's with a
- 3:11Speaker 3: huge move down that left side. He gets Demko to
- 3:13Speaker 3: fight hard to his left and he comes back to
- 3:16Speaker 3: his right and puts that one home crack and win
- 3:20Speaker 3: the shootout.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Beauty ever refits you al Konski on the call as
- 3:23Speaker 2: the crack and knocked off the Canucks four to three
- 3:25Speaker 2: in a shootout, and they have moved their run to
- 3:28Speaker 2: six zero and one in the last seven games and
- 3:31Speaker 2: looking to now make it three and o to begin
- 3:33Speaker 2: the calendar year of twenty twenty six. Right now nestled
- 3:37Speaker 2: into a playoff spot with two more games to go
- 3:40Speaker 2: until the finish line of the halfway point. We should
- 3:43Speaker 2: stay here for this regular season and the Crack and
- 3:46Speaker 2: their record coming in right now stands at eighteen fourteen
- 3:49Speaker 2: and seven point total led forty three. They have a
- 3:52Speaker 2: three point lead right now on the Calgary Flames, who
- 3:54Speaker 2: they host in this second matchup of the regular season
- 3:57Speaker 2: at eighteen nineteen and four with forty points on the campaign.
- 4:02Speaker 2: It's gonna be a big one coming up here for
- 4:04Speaker 2: captain Jordan Eberley due to play in career game number
- 4:08Speaker 2: one thousand and one hundred against the Flames. Also in
- 4:12Speaker 2: a tower he makes his home in the off season
- 4:16Speaker 2: while the Crack and also it looks like they're getting
- 4:18Speaker 2: healthier on the front end and also in net a
- 4:22Speaker 2: promising sign for them as they enter matchup two of
- 4:25Speaker 2: this regular season. All right, on the road, we go
- 4:29Speaker 2: Everroscott TV here for tonight. So I'll be in the
- 4:31Speaker 2: booth here with this guy al Koniski joining us. Now,
- 4:35Speaker 2: you guys settle in here with the hotel and the
- 4:36Speaker 2: gym and everything else is as usual.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it gets a little familiar after a while because
- 4:40Speaker 3: we often come back at the same hotels. Just remember
- 4:42Speaker 3: what floor of the gym is on, and where the
- 4:44Speaker 3: restaurant is.
- 4:45Speaker 2: What's the most ideal workout for you? Because I think
- 4:47Speaker 2: for me, if I'm on the road, if they got
- 4:49Speaker 2: to if they have a good solid rack of weights,
- 4:51Speaker 2: I'm in heaven.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Yeah. I like I said, of free weights, ideally dumbbells
- 4:55Speaker 3: and some barwells that and if they've got a peloton,
- 4:57Speaker 3: I'm in heaven.
- 4:58Speaker 2: I can't outration the all the time, I know that
- 5:01Speaker 2: for sure. Two days off before getting here to this
- 5:05Speaker 2: back to back and we're not going to see this
- 5:07Speaker 2: kind of stretch again for literally another month right before
- 5:11Speaker 2: the Olympic break. So it's pretty much it feels like
- 5:13Speaker 2: all hands on deck here with the schedule rolling now
- 5:16Speaker 2: seventeen games this month and now nineteen and thirty five
- 5:20Speaker 2: before the Olympic break, it really kind of feels like that,
- 5:23Speaker 2: you know, injuries and bodies are healing now at the
- 5:26Speaker 2: right time.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Now, Yeah, I think that's just it, Mike, Like you've
- 5:29Speaker 3: been looking forward to this month, not necessarily because of
- 5:31Speaker 3: the schedule, but because of the guys that have been
- 5:33Speaker 3: on the shelf, and you know that includes Montour and
- 5:37Speaker 3: Jayden Short specifically. You know, Murray is still coming back
- 5:40Speaker 3: from his injury, but it looks like, you know, if
- 5:43Speaker 3: all things hold for this the majority of this month
- 5:45Speaker 3: of January, we should have most of the team healthy.
- 5:48Speaker 2: I will get to Jaden Schwartz and Matt Murray in
- 5:52Speaker 2: a bit because practice told us something pretty revealing the
- 5:56Speaker 2: other day before the team got on the plane. And
- 5:58Speaker 2: I think it has really a lot to do with
- 6:00Speaker 2: how much this roster can hold up with the schedule
- 6:03Speaker 2: crunch that is coming their way. But I want to
- 6:05Speaker 2: get back here to the Vancouver win to end back
- 6:08Speaker 2: to back, and I think in a year where you
- 6:11Speaker 2: have to really maximize the lineup that you have, with
- 6:15Speaker 2: the injury bug going all across the entire league, the
- 6:17Speaker 2: schedule crunch going all across the entire league, it feels crazy.
- 6:21Speaker 2: But again, this feels like kind of like a year
- 6:23Speaker 2: of survival, and the Kraken are passing every test so
- 6:27Speaker 2: far and checking off nearly every box so far to
- 6:31Speaker 2: pass this test. Vancouver at times played better in spurts.
- 6:34Speaker 2: To me, the third period, you felt that charge was
- 6:37Speaker 2: certainly coming. Jordan Nevery told you and Everett as well
- 6:40Speaker 2: between periods of play, and I thought that overtime goal
- 6:44Speaker 2: that was wiped out for interference that could have been
- 6:47Speaker 2: incredibly deflating, and then you're just waiting for the other
- 6:51Speaker 2: shoe to drop. And then you get to Liam Ogrin
- 6:54Speaker 2: as well in the third round of the shootout and
- 6:56Speaker 2: the Krack can survive it. Joey Decord survived it. He
- 6:59Speaker 2: was on and Maddy Beniers drops an absolute highlight jaw
- 7:03Speaker 2: dropper at the end of the third round. It was
- 7:07Speaker 2: the right place at the right time. I think that
- 7:09Speaker 2: got this done. It get you two points and that
- 7:12Speaker 2: wasn't up to us to stay in that win, and
- 7:14Speaker 2: that's what it will take here to get plenty of
- 7:16Speaker 2: wins this year.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Yeah, a couple things about that game, Mike. You know,
- 7:19Speaker 3: it's specifically kel Fler again his first as a Crack
- 7:22Speaker 3: and that was huge. Also, the first goal of the game,
- 7:25Speaker 3: the eighth time in a row, also awesome. Love to
- 7:28Speaker 3: see that Channel sevens with a power play goal again,
- 7:31Speaker 3: you're looking for more from the power play. They end
- 7:32Speaker 3: up one for two in that game. And then, of
- 7:35Speaker 3: course the fourth line. We can't talk about things not
- 7:37Speaker 3: much until we talk about the fourth line. Ben Myer's
- 7:40Speaker 3: getting that third goal of the game, but assists go
- 7:42Speaker 3: to the other two members of that line. They've been
- 7:44Speaker 3: playing fantastically lately. But big picture, it feels like the
- 7:48Speaker 3: Kraken have slid back into where they started this season,
- 7:51Speaker 3: which was the best start in franchise history, and they've
- 7:54Speaker 3: continued it, continued it from the three games before the
- 7:57Speaker 3: Christmas break now into January.
- 7:59Speaker 2: A sign and that told me things are going well
- 8:02Speaker 2: is when you go through a period like in the
- 8:04Speaker 2: second period where you give up a two one to
- 8:07Speaker 2: zero and give credit, Shane right delivered an absolute monster
- 8:11Speaker 2: bad check, but then you come right back down and
- 8:14Speaker 2: bury one. But how many times have we seen teams
- 8:18Speaker 2: like this maybe fall and come up on the wrong
- 8:21Speaker 2: side of this, And yet it's the krack and who
- 8:23Speaker 2: were basically forcing the play, but yet to a positive
- 8:26Speaker 2: degree where they find opportunity and they strike. And at
- 8:31Speaker 2: that point that goal felt like a bad breaker.
- 8:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I absolutely did, And you know, I give a
- 8:36Speaker 3: lot of credit to the guys. You know, giving up
- 8:37Speaker 3: two power play goals in the second period is as
- 8:40Speaker 3: good as that Vancouver win was. The second period continues
- 8:43Speaker 3: to be a little sloppy and area of an opportunity,
- 8:46Speaker 3: and you know, two power play goals for Vancouver in
- 8:48Speaker 3: that period is probably the highlight or the asterisks on
- 8:51Speaker 3: that sloppiness. Secondly, and you know I mentioned Fleuria, mentioned
- 8:55Speaker 3: the power play goal by Stevenson, and obviously the fourth
- 8:58Speaker 3: line goal by Myers. I got a top off with
- 9:00Speaker 3: that shootout, that Matty Beanir's goal, Like he talked about,
- 9:04Speaker 3: he was working on it in practice. This team knows
- 9:06Speaker 3: they need to get better in the shootout, The goaltenders
- 9:08Speaker 3: know they need to do better in the shootout, and
- 9:11Speaker 3: for them to get to that spot where Vancouver had
- 9:14Speaker 3: exhausted their three shooters zero for three, Seattle had exhausted
- 9:18Speaker 3: their first two to zero for two, and here comes
- 9:20Speaker 3: Matty Beanier's with a highlight reel move to win it.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Just a fantastic win.
- 9:25Speaker 2: We have seen Matty Beaneirs ascend in a game, re
- 9:29Speaker 2: scored a pair of goals and then does this which
- 9:32Speaker 2: tells you again and I said this going back a year,
- 9:35Speaker 2: two years, three years, the more that you see Matt
- 9:38Speaker 2: Ebaneers at the forefront of this team leadership wise, making
- 9:43Speaker 2: impact plays wise, this is where this team is going
- 9:46Speaker 2: to go. And we saw a direct result of that
- 9:49Speaker 2: once again against Nashville and then the top it off. Yes,
- 9:52Speaker 2: I know in the shootout those goals don't count, but
- 9:54Speaker 2: it ultimately won the game where you had to find
- 9:56Speaker 2: someone come through in the clutch. It's kind of like
- 9:58Speaker 2: what Lane Lambert said when you're standing over a three
- 10:01Speaker 2: foot putt trying to win the golf tournament. Maddy Beniers
- 10:04Speaker 2: had the chill factor in him, he had the dog
- 10:06Speaker 2: factor in him to finish off that shootout. Heading into
- 10:10Speaker 2: this game against Calgary meant a practice day before the
- 10:13Speaker 2: team got on the plane and seeing Jayden Schwartz out
- 10:17Speaker 2: there was again an incredibly relieving sign to see him
- 10:21Speaker 2: upgraded out of the non contact jersey and now into
- 10:24Speaker 2: a regular jersey, and Lean Lambert wouldn't commit after practice
- 10:28Speaker 2: to see if he was going to play or not.
- 10:30Speaker 2: Of course, I think a lot of this is going
- 10:31Speaker 2: to be held close to the fest as always has
- 10:34Speaker 2: been here with him, but yet to see him rotating
- 10:38Speaker 2: possibly in we'll see if he's in or Berkeley Chattons,
- 10:41Speaker 2: maybe out, who knows, because they were rotating him with
- 10:44Speaker 2: Shane Wright and Jared McCann. But what you do is
- 10:47Speaker 2: that you put back in not just leadership all but
- 10:50Speaker 2: also an impeccable net front presence that this team has
- 10:55Speaker 2: found a way to survive without. But when he's due back,
- 10:58Speaker 2: it's an upgrade. But the question is, I think, to you,
- 11:01Speaker 2: how big of an upgrade is it.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's huge. I think it's an upgrade
- 11:04Speaker 3: not only on your offense, on your defense. You mentioned
- 11:06Speaker 3: net front presence on the bench in the locker room,
- 11:09Speaker 3: like Jayden, Schwartz ticks all the boxes for me, so
- 11:12Speaker 3: you know, regardless of what you need, he's available to deliver.
- 11:16Speaker 3: And you know, as far as this Calgary game goes,
- 11:19Speaker 3: the last time the crack And lost to Calgary was
- 11:21Speaker 3: December eighteenth. Then they started a three game winning streak
- 11:25Speaker 3: prior to the Christmas break, So that's got to be
- 11:27Speaker 3: in the back of their heads coming to this game
- 11:29Speaker 3: that that was our last time against these guys they
- 11:33Speaker 3: beat us. We have to go out and play a
- 11:35Speaker 3: good game tonight and get a win.
- 11:37Speaker 2: With Jaden Schwartz. And there's also the Matt Murray factor
- 11:40Speaker 2: because he took a ton of reps at practice, which
- 11:42Speaker 2: I think leads me to believe in a lot of
- 11:44Speaker 2: us here to believe that the time could be very
- 11:47Speaker 2: very soon that he is back in, and maybe it's
- 11:51Speaker 2: at an ideal time not for the performance and goal
- 11:54Speaker 2: because the Crack and had been the best in the league.
- 11:56Speaker 2: You're pretty much the season when you look at teams,
- 11:58Speaker 2: say percentage in Philim Groubauer is playing above about nearly
- 12:02Speaker 2: eighty percent of this league as far as goaltending and
- 12:05Speaker 2: analytics that go with his kind of game. But I
- 12:08Speaker 2: say it for this. They brought in this three goalie
- 12:11Speaker 2: system in this rotation to be able to withstand the
- 12:14Speaker 2: rigors of this schedule, and now it seems like they're
- 12:17Speaker 2: going to need it more than ever here with back
- 12:19Speaker 2: to back again coming up, and then you go through
- 12:22Speaker 2: the Rangers, the Devils, the Bruins next week, and right
- 12:26Speaker 2: before that Minnesota and Carolina as well this week. So
- 12:29Speaker 2: Matt Murray coming back, we'll see if he's slought it
- 12:33Speaker 2: in here for tonight or tomorrow, later this week, who
- 12:36Speaker 2: knows when. But where does this fit impact the Crack
- 12:40Speaker 2: and the most getting him back in?
- 12:42Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that you know, this three goalie system
- 12:44Speaker 3: is about to pay off in this month of January
- 12:46Speaker 3: with seventeen and thirty one days. But you know, you
- 12:49Speaker 3: look at the play of Philip Rubauer. You look at
- 12:51Speaker 3: the play of Joey Decord right now, Philip Grubauer has
- 12:54Speaker 3: a better save percentage than Joey to Cord now he's
- 12:56Speaker 3: played half as many games. And my rule is that
- 12:59Speaker 3: you're the number one until you lose the number one,
- 13:02Speaker 3: and right now Joey is still the number one goaltender.
- 13:04Speaker 3: But what a great problem to have to have two
- 13:07Speaker 3: goaltenders playing like this, Matt Murray getting healthy, who the
- 13:11Speaker 3: last time we saw him look like he was in
- 13:13Speaker 3: that same area as far as numbers go, it could
- 13:15Speaker 3: be an exciting run here in January, as we see
- 13:18Speaker 3: all three of these goalies play at the top of
- 13:20Speaker 3: their game.
- 13:20Speaker 2: A big night here due for this evening is the
- 13:23Speaker 2: captain Jordan Eberley, who makes Calgary his home of course
- 13:27Speaker 2: in the offseason. And how appropriate because right back in
- 13:30Speaker 2: these parts he is due to play in career game
- 13:34Speaker 2: one thousand, one hundred in his NHL career al he's
- 13:38Speaker 2: playing I think the finest hockey he's played, maybe in
- 13:40Speaker 2: over a decade right now. I mean, goal scoring wise
- 13:42Speaker 2: is on pacer roughly thirty. He hasn't done that since
- 13:46Speaker 2: twenty eleven, but right now, I think this is a
- 13:50Speaker 2: game where if all if all plans out and all
- 13:53Speaker 2: plays out the right way, you see a team that
- 13:55Speaker 2: can be rallying right around him here for a pretty
- 13:58Speaker 2: important game to solidify their place in the standings and
- 14:01Speaker 2: also keep Calgary at bay because they have been very,
- 14:03Speaker 2: very good on home mise.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree. I think, you know, Jordan Eberley brings
- 14:07Speaker 3: a different kind of leadership. We talked about a little
- 14:09Speaker 3: bit about Jaden Schwartz and his style. I think that
- 14:14Speaker 3: Jordan Eberley is a quiet leader. He's a lead by
- 14:16Speaker 3: example guy. He's a guy that you know, despite missing
- 14:20Speaker 3: Jaden Schwartz from the lineup in his net front presence,
- 14:22Speaker 3: Jordan Everdy doesn't have an issue getting there either. He
- 14:24Speaker 3: scored a lot of goals from that area. So I
- 14:27Speaker 3: think we talk a lot about how when guys go
- 14:29Speaker 3: out of the lineup for injury, there's opportunity for youngsters
- 14:32Speaker 3: to come in. I think it was an opportunity for
- 14:34Speaker 3: Jordan Everley to say, you know, turn back the clock
- 14:37Speaker 3: a little bit and say I am still a top
- 14:40Speaker 3: line guy, I am still a big contributor, and I
- 14:42Speaker 3: want to help lead this team.
- 14:43Speaker 2: Up against Calgary is second matchup of the season coming up,
- 14:46Speaker 2: and there's one more after this. It will be in Seattle.
- 14:49Speaker 2: The Crack and trying to snap back to back losses
- 14:51Speaker 2: head to head against the Flames and a team that
- 14:53Speaker 2: they're facing that hasn't scored a ton this season. They've
- 14:56Speaker 2: had to rely on Dustin Wolf a lot, but they've
- 14:59Speaker 2: also been driven besides the usual Rasmus Anderson Nosm Kadri
- 15:03Speaker 2: contributions by Michael Backlan and Blake Coleman. And Coleman right
- 15:07Speaker 2: now is your leading goals score on this team. But
- 15:09Speaker 2: it also seems as if whenever you stare down nasm Kadri,
- 15:13Speaker 2: he seems to be a problem here in these matchups. First,
- 15:16Speaker 2: big key for you out of the gate here for
- 15:18Speaker 2: tonight is what I.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Think, it's stay out of the box for that very
- 15:21Speaker 3: very reason you just mentioned is guys like Kadri can
- 15:23Speaker 3: hurt you when when you're down a man and I
- 15:25Speaker 3: think that, you know, as disciplined as the Cracking can be,
- 15:28Speaker 3: they've got to limit the man up opportunities to you know,
- 15:32Speaker 3: one or two per game. They get into a situation
- 15:34Speaker 3: where they saw six against Vancouver two games ago, it
- 15:37Speaker 3: hurts you. It's tough to have a penalty kill that's
- 15:40Speaker 3: not at the top of its game right now, go
- 15:42Speaker 3: out and kill six penalties, So you want to be
- 15:44Speaker 3: one hundred percent of the penalty kill in this game
- 15:47Speaker 3: against Calgary. Only take one or two penalties. Hecas.
- 15:49Speaker 2: The more and more that they can stay away from
- 15:51Speaker 2: the box and keep those seats cold. Maybe here in
- 15:53Speaker 2: the chill of Calgary, the better off that they will be.
- 15:56Speaker 2: See what I did there, because right now, Al, it's
- 15:58Speaker 2: cold outside.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Right yeah, it's nine degrees right now.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Yeah, we're looking forward to sun of your days of cracking.
- 16:03Speaker 2: They're trying to again turn up the heat on their
- 16:05Speaker 2: streak here in the cold six zero and one heading
- 16:09Speaker 2: into this matchup, and they are a playoff team looking
- 16:11Speaker 2: to solidify more of their spot here tonight against the
- 16:14Speaker 2: Flames and matchup.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Two of the season.
