- 0:00Vox LIturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:21Of today's feast, Dom Prosper Garage writes the following, today the Virgin Mary ascended to heaven. Rejoice for she reigns with Christ forever. The church will close her chance on this glorious day with this sweet antiphon which resumes the object of the feast in the spirit in which it should be celebrated.
- 0:54No other solemnity breathes like this one at once triumph and peace. None better answers the enthusiasm of the many and the serenity of the souls consummated in love. Assuredly, that was a great triumph when Our Lord, rising by his own power from the tomb, cast hell into dismay. But to our souls, so abruptly drawn from the abyss of sorrows on Golgotha the suddenness of the victory caused a sort of stupor to mingle with the joy of that greatest of days. Passion tide consecrated to the sufferings of the man god preceded by that day far too closely, and our hearts still heaving with their own anguish in the sight of the mother's sorrows needed time to recover the full liberty of their thrill of gladness.
- 2:01The greater was the confusion of death and sin and hell on that morning of the resurrection. The more reserved was the church's attitude in her expression of gladness. She seemed afraid of adding anything of her own to that which divine power had so mightily achieved. But today's festival has nothing of this character. It is a day of pure triumph and pure joy.
- 2:36Mary has left the earth and as she rises the whole church rises with her. The queen has entered into her kingdom and the servants of the queen cannot but share her joy. The angels rejoice. The apostles who have just closed her eyes rejoice. The whole heavenly court rejoices and we still on earth rejoice with them because our mother is crowned because the work of the redemption is completed in her because the first of the redeemed has entered body and soul into the glory that is prepared for all the elect.
- 3:33Let us then join our voices to the concert of heaven. Let us sing with the church the antiphon that will close this day's office. Today the Virgin Mary ascended to heaven. Rejoice for she reigns with Christ forever. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy ghost.
- 4:06Amen. The introit. Now in heaven, a great portent appeared. A woman that wore the sun for her mantle with the moon under her feet, and a crown of 12 stars around her head. Sing ye to the Lord a new canticle, because he hath done wonderful things.
- 4:34Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Now in heaven a great portent appeared, a woman that wore the sun for her mantle with the moon under her feet and a crown of 12 stars around her head. The Collect. Let us pray.
- 5:09Almighty everlasting God who hast taken up body and soul into heaven, the Immaculate Virgin Mary, mother of thy son, grant we beseech thee that by steadfastly keeping heaven as our goal, we may be counted worthy to join her in glory through the same Jesus Christ, thy son, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the book of Judith. With his own power, the Lord has blessed thee, and by thy means has brought our enemies to nothing. Blessing be thine, my daughter, from the Lord God, the most high, such as no other woman on earth can claim.
- 6:13Blessed be the Lord, maker of heaven and earth, for sending thee out to wound the head of our arch enemy. Such high renown he has given thee this day that the praise of thee shall never die on men's lips, so long as they hold the Lord's power in remembrance. Thy own life thou wouldst not prize when thy countrymen were in need and great affliction. Thou wouldst avert our ruin with our God to speed thee. Thou art the boast of Jerusalem, the joy of Israel, the pride of our people.
- 7:03The gradual. Listen, my daughter, and consider my words attentively. Thy beauty now is all for the king's delight. She comes, the princess, all fair to see, with her robe of golden cloth. Alleluia.
- 7:26Alleluia. Mary has been taken up into heaven. The angelic host rejoices. Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke.
- 7:46At that time Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost so that she cried out with a loud voice, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. How have I deserved to be thus visited by the mother of my Lord? Why, as soon as ever the voice of thy greeting sounded in my ears, the child in my womb leaped for joy. Blessed art thou for thy believing: the message that was brought to thee from the Lord shall have fulfillment. And Mary said, my soul magnifies the Lord.
- 8:32My spirit has found joy in God my savior because he has looked graciously upon the lowliness of his handmaid. Behold, from this day forward, all generations will count me blessed because he who is mighty, he whose name is holy, has wrought for me his wonders. He has mercy upon those who fear him from generation to generation. The offertory. I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and thy seed in her seed.
- 9:16The Secret: May our offering of due service rise unto Thee, O Lord, and through the prayer of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary, assumed by Thee into heaven, may our hearts be set on fire with love and evermore yearn after thee through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Preface of Our Lady It is truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, and that we should praise and bless and proclaim thee in the assumption of Blessed Mary ever Virgin who also conceived thine only begotten son by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost and the glory of her virginity still abiding, gave forth to the world the everlasting light, Jesus Christ, our Lord, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, and the power stand in all. The heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the Blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them we entreat thee that thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted while we say with humble praise.
- 11:07Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
- 11:36All generations shall call me blessed because he that is mighty hath done great things to me, and holy is his name. The post communion. Let us pray. O Lord, through the merits and prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by thee assumed into heaven, may we who have received the sacraments of salvation come to the glory of the resurrection through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 12:28In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. And Mary said, my soul magnifies the Lord. My spirit has found joy in God who is my savior because he has looked graciously upon the lowliness of his handmaid. Behold, from this day forward, all generations will count me blessed because he who is mighty, he whose name is holy, has wrought for me his wonders.
- 13:07He has mercy upon those who fear him from generation unto generation. He has done valiantly with the strength of his arm, driving the proud astray in the conceit of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their seat and exalted the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty handed. He has protected his servant Israel, keeping his merciful design in remembrance according to the promise which he made to our forefathers, Abraham, and his posterity forevermore.
- 13:52Amen.
