- 0:22out, but we are walking in community together.
- 0:24And so we do want to make sure that you guys
- 0:27know that we do have a website called Fostering
- 0:29Faith Media. And we do have workbooks up for
- 0:32every month of these podcasts. And so you guys
- 0:34can write down your notes. You guys can go through
- 0:35the questions and go through all of these things
- 0:38that we are talking about. And so we hope that
- 0:41this message inspires you. You're going to call
- 0:42it loving people the way that God calls us to
- 0:45love. And so relationships are such a big part
- 0:48of our lives and we And if you're like me, you're
- 0:51discovering that loving people, really loving
- 0:53people the way that Jesus calls us to love, takes
- 0:56way more than emotion, personality, or natural
- 1:00chemistry. It takes the Holy Spirit. It takes
- 1:03maturity. It takes patience. It takes surrender.
- 1:07It takes a strength that you do not have on your
- 1:09own. And so that's why February, for us, is all
- 1:12about relationships. Not just about dating or
- 1:15marriage or friendships, but relationships as
- 1:17a whole. how we love, how we forgive, how we
- 1:23handle conflict, how we show up, how we reflect
- 1:27in Christ in every place He has planted us. Because
- 1:30the way that you love is the one of the loudest
- 1:33testimonies that you can ever preach. And today
- 1:36I want to do something foundational, loving people
- 1:39the way that God calls us to love them. And so
- 1:41not the way the culture says, not the way that
- 1:44emotion loves. Not the way that convenience loves,
- 1:48but the way that God loves, because God loves
- 1:50looks nothing like the world's love. The world
- 1:54looks like love whenever it feels good, but God's
- 1:59love because He is good. The world pulls back
- 2:02when it's inconvenient, but God leans in whenever
- 2:05we least deserve it. The world says, do what
- 2:10benefits you. God says, lay your life down. The
- 2:14world says, match their energy. God says, match
- 2:18my example. And so first, John 14, 19 says, we
- 2:23love because he loved us first. And so we will
- 2:27plug the t -shirt that we have on sale for on
- 2:31our website too. It says, that's like the scripture
- 2:33that we have. And so meaning, I don't love people
- 2:36because they're easy. I love people because I
- 2:39have been radically loved by God. That's a fuel.
- 2:43That's the source. That's the standard. And Jesus
- 2:46takes it even further in John 13, 34, when he
- 2:50tells us of his disciples, a new command I give
- 2:54you, love one another. As I have loved you, you
- 2:57must love one another. Notice Jesus didn't say
- 3:00love with your version of love. He said love
- 3:05with my version of love, which means our love
- 3:08is supposed to be and look like Jesus. And let
- 3:12me tell you something, the kind of love is uncomfortable
- 3:14because Jesus' love is sacrificial. It's patient.
- 3:19It's forgiving. It's humble. It's consistent.
- 3:23It's holy. It's honest. It's restorative. It's
- 3:28transformational. It stretches your character.
- 3:31It convicts your flesh. Real love is not soft.
- 3:36It is strong. Real love refuses to let bitterness
- 3:39grow. Real love refuses to gossip, to quit, refuses
- 3:45to get petty, refuses to stay offended, refuses
- 3:49to hold grudges. Real love doesn't say, love
- 3:53me back. Real love says, even if you fail me,
- 3:57I won't abandon the posture that God calls me
- 4:00to be. And listen, God never calls you to love
- 4:04that he doesn't equip you for. That's why we
- 4:08have the Holy Spirit. Romans 5 .5 says that God
- 4:11loves, has been seen, poured into our hearts
- 4:14through the Holy Spirit that he has given us.
- 4:17Meaning you're not loving people out of your
- 4:19own strength. You're loving them out of God's
- 4:21strength, working inside of you. And that changes
- 4:25everything because some people demand more love
- 4:28than you feel you have. Some people drain you.
- 4:33Some people disappoint you. Some people confuse
- 4:36you. And some people push every button that you've
- 4:40got, and you know what I'm talking about. And
- 4:42God says, love them anyway. Not because they're
- 4:47lovable, but because I loved you whenever you
- 4:51weren't. And that's where the growth happens,
- 4:55because relationships reveal the places where
- 4:57God is still refining you. People pull out parts
- 5:01of you that you didn't even know you needed to
- 5:04sacrifice. One conversation can expose impatience
- 5:09you thought you outgrew. One conflict can reveal
- 5:13pride you didn't realize that lived within you.
- 5:17One rejection can uncover insecurity that you
- 5:20thought you healed from. Relationships shake
- 5:23you. They shape you. They are also sanctify you.
- 5:31God uses people. difficult people, amazing people,
- 5:35draining people, surprising people to grow you
- 5:39in the image of Christ. And now let's talk about
- 5:42some boundaries for a second, because loving
- 5:44like Jesus doesn't mean becoming a doormat. Even
- 5:47Jesus set boundaries. He withdrew to rest. He
- 5:51walked away from some crowds. He confronted manipulation.
- 5:54He refused to let people misuse him. Love doesn't
- 5:59eliminate boundaries. Love sets holy boundaries,
- 6:02and here's the difference between loving someone
- 6:05and letting them control your life. Godly love
- 6:08is compassionate, not co -dependent. It's patient,
- 6:15not passive. It's forgiving, not foolish. It's
- 6:20sacrificial, not self -destructive. You can love
- 6:24people deeply without abandoning your God -given
- 6:27peace, identity, and calling. And let me say
- 6:31this generally. Some of the most Christ -like
- 6:34moments you will ever have will be in the moments
- 6:37no one sees. The apology no one knows you made.
- 6:42The patience no one applauded. The forgiveness
- 6:45no one expected. The restraint no one recognized.
- 6:49The kindness that no one thanked you for. That's
- 6:52love. Love isn't loud. Love isn't looking for
- 6:57credit. Love isn't keeping score. Love is steady.
- 7:02Love is honest. Love is reflective of the God
- 7:06who never quits on you. Here's a passion that
- 7:10I think about often, 1 Corinthians 13, not the
- 7:12wedding verse, the Christian verse, the disciple
- 7:16verse, the sanctification verse, the verse that
- 7:19tells you what God expects from your heart. Love
- 7:23is patient. Love is kind. Love does not envy.
- 7:27does not boast, it is not proud, it is not rude,
- 7:32it is not self -seeking, it is not easily angered,
- 7:36keeps no wrongs of record, keeps no record of
- 7:39wrong. And listen, we don't read this verse and
- 7:42think, oh, how cute. We read this verse and think,
- 7:45God, transform me, because every line exposes
- 7:48something in us. Every line says, are you willing
- 7:52to love like this? Are you willing to be shaped
- 7:56into this? Are you willing to surrender the parts
- 7:59of your personality that contradict this? Loving
- 8:03people the way God calls you to love them is
- 8:06not easy, but it is freeing. It frees you from
- 8:09bitterness. It frees you from offense. It frees
- 8:12you from pride. It frees you from needing to
- 8:15be right. It frees you from keeping score. It
- 8:17frees you from revenge. It frees you from insecurity.
- 8:21Because the second that you begin loving people
- 8:23with God's love, you start living with God's
- 8:26peace. And I want you to hear this. If you're
- 8:29struggling to love someone right now, you're
- 8:31not failing. You're growing. If someone is stretching
- 8:34you, God is shaping you. If relationships feel
- 8:38heavy, God will be maturing you. And if God brought
- 8:41someone into your life who is difficult to love,
- 8:44maybe it's not about them. Maybe God is using
- 8:48them to pull you into a deeper dependence on
- 8:51Him. And so let that simmer. Who in around you
- 8:54is getting on your nerves? Who in your life is
- 8:56so hard to love? Who in your life has God put
- 9:00at the workplace, at school, on a team, on a
- 9:04council? Who has it been, and like, oh my gosh,
- 9:07they don't deserve anything. Did we? Did you
- 9:10deserve to be loved whenever you walked away
- 9:12from the umpteenth time, whenever you came back?
- 9:15Didn't we deserve it? No, we didn't. But that's
- 9:18why we love, because He loved us first. That's
- 9:21why we forgive, because He forgave us. Who are
- 9:24we? Who are we not to love someone that He made?
- 9:27Who are we? Because if we look at that person
- 9:29and we see that He's the son of daughter of Christ,
- 9:32who are we not to love on the person that was
- 9:35made in God's image? Are some people difficult?
- 9:40Yeah. But what's in our hearts that makes it
- 9:43difficult? Because we don't hold offense. We
- 9:45don't hold grudges. We don't judge. That's God's
- 9:48job. And so we hope that this message encouraged
- 9:52you. I would love for you to take these simple
- 9:56steps this week. Choose one person in your life
- 10:00and intentionally love them God's way. Ask God
- 10:04to show you who that person is. And then show
- 10:07up for them. Encourage them. Pray for them. Bless
- 10:11them. Love them. was love that looks like Jesus.
- 10:17We would love to pray for you guys. Dear Heavenly
- 10:20Father, thank you so much for today. Lord, help
- 10:22us love people the way that you love us. Not
- 10:24the easy, casual, surface type of love that promotes,
- 10:29but deep, sacrificial, patient, steady love that
- 10:32reflects the heart of Christ. Stretch us, shape
- 10:35us, grow us. Give us the courage to love beyond
- 10:37our own strength. Fill us with your spirit so
- 10:39that we can love out of your power and not our
- 10:42weakness. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen and
- 10:46amen. We hope that you are encouraged by this.
- 10:49Send it to somebody. Write a comment. Leave us
- 10:52a message. Make sure that you print out your
- 10:54February homework book and that way you can walk
- 10:56through this with us together. We hope this message
- 10:58encouraged you. We love you guys. See you next
- 11:00week.
