Latest / 22 Panels - A Comic Book Podcast / Heavy Metal Book Club #36: September 1979
Transcript
- 0:01Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody! Welcome back to the Heavy Metal Book Club on 22 Panels. We have Dylan Gilbertson, we have my brother Peter, we have my friend Matt, and it is Heavy Metal from September of 1979.
- 0:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 0:21Tad Eggleston: My first comment is they really, really dropped the ball by not serializing all of Alien, because they absolutely could have fit more into the last two issues.
- 0:36Matt: Yep.
- 0:38Tad Eggleston: Without cutting anything that we would have missed.
- 0:41Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 0:43Tad Eggleston: Also, there was way too much pros in this issue.
- 0:47Dillon Gilbertson: It's a lot. It was a lot.
- 0:49Tad Eggleston: Some of it might have been good, but I wasn't in the mood.
- 0:52Dillon Gilbertson: I feel like a lot of the pros, however, was accompanied by pretty awesome art.
- 0:58Tad Eggleston: Yes! Yes, I will give you that.
- 1:01Tad Eggleston: Great art to go with the pros. I do like the cover. The, the, the robot…
- 1:07Matt: Elvis dude, I don't.
- 1:08Peter Eggleston Connor: Alice-looking dude.
- 1:10Tad Eggleston: He actually feels more Little Richard to me.
- 1:13Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, okay.
- 1:14Tad Eggleston: He's got the big pompadour.
- 1:18Tad Eggleston: But yeah.
- 1:22Tad Eggleston: Oh, I also wanted to point out…
- 1:25Tad Eggleston: just… just… I don't know how it wound up catching my eye, But it did.
- 1:31Tad Eggleston: And, I mean, we're, we're.
- 1:35Peter Eggleston Connor: We're in September, and they're talking about August in a commercial.
- 1:39Tad Eggleston: Well, yeah, but that's… that's not actually the thing, because if it says September on the cover, that's generally when it comes off the stands. Correct. Not when… or at least it used to be, when it came off the stands, not when it went on.
- 1:55Tad Eggleston: And, you know, it's 46 years too late for this to matter.
- 2:00Tad Eggleston: But… Pecatonia is actually Pecatonica, Eleanor.
- 2:10Tad Eggleston: And South Bend is in Indiana.
- 2:14Dillon Gilbertson: Was it back in 1979?
- 2:16Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 2:19Matt: Good catch, Dylan.
- 2:21Tad Eggleston: both Pecatonica was Pecatonica then, and South Bend has been in Indiana for a long, long time.
- 2:29Dillon Gilbertson: I'm gonna Google it.
- 2:30Peter Eggleston Connor: But you went to these, you went to these cars.
- 2:34Tad Eggleston: I did not go.
- 2:35Peter Eggleston Connor: shows anyways, right?
- 2:36Matt: I was 3 when those shows happened.
- 2:39Tad Eggleston: Which means I think you were the only one of us alive.
- 2:46Peter Eggleston Connor: You're right, mom would have had to go to these shows. I was thinking 10 years later. Don't know where my head was.
- 2:51Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, it caught my… you know, because I saw the Illinois one, I'm like, oh, cool, like…
- 2:57Matt: they were in our area, and then I'm like.
- 3:01Tad Eggleston: South Bend, Illinois?
- 3:05Dillon Gilbertson: And then I went, do I know a Pecatonia?
- 3:08Tad Eggleston: So I looked it up, I'm like, oh, I kinda know a Pecatonica, but… but no, there's not a Pecatonia!
- 3:15Dillon Gilbertson: Confirmed by Wikipedia, Pecatonica was Pecatonica as far back as 1869.
- 3:22Tad Eggleston: This is what I'm saying. It had been Pecatonica for more than 100 years.
- 3:26Matt: even half cars away.
- 3:29Tad Eggleston: Since you're on the Wikipedia page, what's the… what's the population of Pecatomica?
- 3:33Dillon Gilbertson: I will say that there is a South Bend, in Indiana.
- 3:38Tad Eggleston: Yes, I said it was in Indiana. It says it's in Illinois, though, on this list.
- 3:43Dillon Gilbertson: What's interesting is if you type in South Bend, Illinois, South Bend, Indiana comes up.
- 3:48Tad Eggleston: That does not surprise me, because I don't…
- 3:52Dillon Gilbertson: What'd you want me to look at at Picatonica?
- 3:54Tad Eggleston: What's the population?
- 3:56Dillon Gilbertson: In the current population, or back in 1979?
- 3:58Tad Eggleston: I imagine it wasn't much bigger back then.
- 4:02Dillon Gilbertson: Current population, as of 2020 is 2,090 people.
- 4:07Tad Eggleston: So, how the hell did they have the cars in town?
- 4:10Matt: You know what, Ted, it's funny that you mention this, because I was looking at those two, and I'm like, they only come to New York, to New York City?
- 4:17Matt: Wow. And yet they go from 2000…
- 4:20Peter Eggleston Connor: My… my dad…
- 4:22Matt: in town? Jesus Christ.
- 4:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, the other thing is, that's just a… They played two nights in Jackson.
- 4:27Tad Eggleston: Mississippi.
- 4:28Peter Eggleston Connor: But what I was gonna say is it sounds like Pecatonica might be one of those places that…
- 4:35Peter Eggleston Connor: has a big stage or something, but doesn't… doesn't have a lot else.
- 4:41Matt: That's true, could be.
- 4:42Dillon Gilbertson: The population in 1980, a year after this issue, was 1732.
- 4:50Matt: And that's because… People got pregnant.
- 4:53Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, because of this issue. Because of this issue.
- 4:56Tad Eggleston: Show, yeah.
- 4:57Matt: I…
- 4:58Peter Eggleston Connor: But this is actually really odd, like, the number of shows they have in the South is… I didn't know the cars were so big in the South.
- 5:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, there you go.
- 5:13Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm not even talking to you about.
- 5:15Tad Eggleston: Louisiana?
- 5:15Peter Eggleston Connor: We were just talking to you about this, the car…
- 5:18Tad Eggleston: I saw, again, two nights in Jackson, Mississippi.
- 5:21Matt: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 5:23Dillon Gilbertson: It's a different time, man.
- 5:26Dillon Gilbertson: It was the 90s.
- 5:28Peter Eggleston Connor: And now we'll talk to you about the aliens advertisement.
- 5:31Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, like, if it had been 1979,
- 5:36Tad Eggleston: And I had seen this ad.
- 5:38Tad Eggleston: In both of the last two issues of Heavy Metal that were…
- 5:45Tad Eggleston: Frankly, subpar, after having two issues, where… There had been great…
- 5:52Tad Eggleston: segments of Alien, I would say, I'm buying your magazine, why do I have to buy the book, too, rather than…
- 6:01Tad Eggleston: You've got the space here!
- 6:05Matt: Literally.
- 6:06Dillon Gilbertson: I wanna say, before we dive too far into the comics already, that the…
- 6:12Matt: For a book that has a lot of pros, an issue that has a lot of pros, the first couple comics, no words at all.
- 6:20Tad Eggleston: That's true.
- 6:21Tad Eggleston: That's true.
- 6:22Dillon Gilbertson: That was interesting.
- 6:22Tad Eggleston: I also love the, I do dig the… the serpent dragon and the… like, man… fish dragon?
- 6:33Dillon Gilbertson: Here it is, fun…
- 6:35Tad Eggleston: On the contents page?
- 6:37Dillon Gilbertson: provocative.
- 6:40Dillon Gilbertson: It almost looks like this dragon thing is stitched together as well, with its… with its skin.
- 6:45Tad Eggleston: A little bit.
- 6:46Tad Eggleston: Though I think… I think that that's… well, oh yeah, the, the, the…
- 6:50Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, the green one.
- 6:51Tad Eggleston: The scales are done.
- 6:52Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 6:52Tad Eggleston: But it also… the way this leg comes out, it almost looks like the knee, or the serpent is also part of the knee, but it's really…
- 7:03Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 7:04Dillon Gilbertson: It's cool, though, I like it.
- 7:06Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 7:08Tad Eggleston: And then, we get our papers.
- 7:11Tad Eggleston: Cigarette papers.
- 7:13Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, no, no thanks.
- 7:14Tad Eggleston: Definitely cigarette papers.
- 7:17Dillon Gilbertson: More of a zigzag guy myself.
- 7:19Tad Eggleston: And then we have what might be my favorite story in the, whole comic.
- 7:24Tad Eggleston: We got some, S&M… D&D… ogre-type fellows?
- 7:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Month.
- 7:35Dillon Gilbertson: This looks like an outtake from the animated Pinocchio movie when he goes to the carnival.
- 7:40Matt: Yes, yes, it's awesome.
- 7:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that'll work too. And it's Elvis the Dragon meets Grail-hunting Heroes, an albino's sword has a mind of its own, the saucers are coming to rescue the hippies. Won't somebody please throw the werewolf a bone?
- 7:59Tad Eggleston: Folk was a fad. It's as dated as soul. Reggae has had it just like rock and roll. Heavy metals like the blues, a relic from the past.
- 8:09Tad Eggleston: Put on your Plexa Dancing shoes and let that disco blast.
- 8:16Tad Eggleston: Shopping mall zombies are caught in the fallout.
- 8:21Tad Eggleston: Brugal pedestrians block up the streets. Chess master wizards are waiting to crawl out and swipe little robot girls' baskets of treats. Country sounds mopey, and jazz has its day. Opera's just dopey, and salsa's passe. Heavy metals like the blues, a relic from the past. So wash them quaaludes down with
- 8:46Tad Eggleston: Booze and let that disco blast.
- 8:50Tad Eggleston: I don't know who SK is.
- 8:54Tad Eggleston: Maybe Sean Kelly?
- 8:56Tad Eggleston: Is the…
- 8:56Matt: 30 Disco Edito.
- 8:58Dillon Gilbertson: Stephen King.
- 8:59Tad Eggleston: is the Vice President Creative Projects?
- 9:04Peter Eggleston Connor: Maybe.
- 9:08Tad Eggleston: Because it is, it is kind of a table of contents, as well.
- 9:15Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, it's not a table of conscience, but it is an intro, for sure.
- 9:20Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, they're not in order, I suppose.
- 9:24Peter Eggleston Connor: Amen.
- 9:25Dillon Gilbertson: manufacturing.
- 9:25Peter Eggleston Connor: There's an actual… Table of cons.
- 9:28Tad Eggleston: I know, I know, I know, I know.
- 9:31Tad Eggleston: But, but it does, it does allude to all of the stories in the…
- 9:37Tad Eggleston: And I just realized that it's got… it's got a Seven Dwarves feel to the arc, too. So yeah, we've definitely got Disney Bondage…
- 9:54Tad Eggleston: Something.
- 9:55Dillon Gilbertson: Period. End of September.
- 9:56Matt: from Fantasia.
- 9:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 10:02Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 10:04Tad Eggleston: So, anyway, that's my frontrunner for Best Stories, so you guys gotta, like, convince me I'm wrong.
- 10:13Tad Eggleston: Though, I do kind of like the art on Soft Landing.
- 10:16Dillon Gilbertson: I didn't understand soft landing. I had no idea what…
- 10:20Matt: Soft landing is… this Corvette thing… have you seen the heavy metal movie?
- 10:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, that's… that's what software is.
- 10:28Dillon Gilbertson: Okay.
- 10:29Matt: This part of that thing, it's a theme that goes.
- 10:31Dillon Gilbertson: That's true.
- 10:32Matt: heavy metal.
- 10:33Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 10:35Tad Eggleston: I do dig this bottom panel here.
- 10:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Didn't we read something like this recently?
- 10:41Matt: We have.
- 10:42Peter Eggleston Connor: It is a recovery.
- 10:43Matt: ordering theme.
- 10:44Tad Eggleston: Damn.
- 10:48Tad Eggleston: We're just waiting for their flying cars.
- 10:50Matt: Yeah.
- 10:52Peter Eggleston Connor: Okay.
- 10:53Peter Eggleston Connor: I want to make sure of that, because I remember reading something that seemed to have, like, it had a little bit more going on than this one.
- 11:00Tad Eggleston: I think it did.
- 11:02Tad Eggleston: Not a lot.
- 11:03Tad Eggleston: But a little.
- 11:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, I felt like we had more intrigue on it, and this one, I'm not, like, this one's entertaining, like, I'm fine with it.
- 11:12Tad Eggleston: It is, but, like, I think the only angle that I really like is this bottom panel.
- 11:19Peter Eggleston Connor: You mean checking it out from the back of the car?
- 11:21Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 11:22Peter Eggleston Connor: nosediving.
- 11:24Tad Eggleston: Like, almost all of the other panels, I wish we had a different angle.
- 11:31Peter Eggleston Connor: I am kind of amused by all the wreckage in that top, top, right one there.
- 11:37Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 11:38Matt: Yeah, I don't think he's driving that car away.
- 11:39Peter Eggleston Connor: And then… and then the fact that the thing goes off after he crashes into the ground, I mean, like, you'd think you'd want that to go off sooner.
- 11:48Matt: Yeah…
- 11:49Peter Eggleston Connor: The, what is that thing called? Parachute?
- 11:53Peter Eggleston Connor: It's not even supposed to be a parachute.
- 11:57Dillon Gilbertson: Would think so.
- 11:57Tad Eggleston: And we did shred his tires really good.
- 11:59Dillon Gilbertson: Hmm.
- 12:00Peter Eggleston Connor: Right. He destroyed the entire bottom of his car.
- 12:05Peter Eggleston Connor: And one foul crang.
- 12:08Tad Eggleston: The license plate is Lander.
- 12:12Peter Eggleston Connor: And, or…
- 12:17Peter Eggleston Connor: He does seem pretty excited at the end, though.
- 12:19Matt: Well, he lied, he lives.
- 12:20Tad Eggleston: I mean, he's alive, wouldn't she be?
- 12:22Dillon Gilbertson: I don't know.
- 12:23Matt: I throw my helmet.
- 12:24Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, I completely agree that.
- 12:26Tad Eggleston: Just fell from orbit.
- 12:30Peter Eggleston Connor: I… again, I completely agree.
- 12:31Tad Eggleston: In a, in a 50s…
- 12:33Matt: It's convertible.
- 12:35Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, to be perfectly honest, like… How would that even work?
- 12:42Peter Eggleston Connor: No.
- 12:43Tad Eggleston: Best not to ask that question.
- 12:45Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, it's just like… Like, from a physics point of view, it's like…
- 12:49Matt: balance that's drawn.
- 12:51Matt: To be honest.
- 12:52Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't.
- 12:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah, he'd have to be going pretty fast, otherwise it would have burned up.
- 12:57Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, no, like, I'm not sure even the ship can get to a point where they can drop it when it would… where it would, like, drop like that, not drop in sort of an orbital, sort of…
- 13:07Matt: ship having getting sucked in, too, yeah.
- 13:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, exactly. That's what I was thinking. I know that the ship has boosters going, but I'm just not… I… and again, I'm not a rocket scientist, but I'm just curious whether that's even feasible, or…
- 13:22Tad Eggleston: Let's see if Tracy will join us?
- 13:24Peter Eggleston Connor: that so much, but…
- 13:27Tad Eggleston: We could get… we could see if we could get our rocket scientist to come join us.
- 13:32Peter Eggleston Connor: Sure, why not?
- 13:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Let's do that.
- 13:36Tad Eggleston: Well, let's talk about the doll, but I will actually send a message.
- 13:41Dillon Gilbertson: The doll, when I first read it, not so much when I'm looking at it now, but when I first read it,
- 13:48Dillon Gilbertson: I had a hard time wondering, like, if these were photographs that were, like, digitally altered.
- 13:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 13:56Tad Eggleston: did kind of.
- 13:57Peter Eggleston Connor: altered, or just altered?
- 13:59Matt: Not digitally.
- 14:00Tad Eggleston: That's necessary.
- 14:01Dillon Gilbertson: But altered in some way, just like that they were actually photographs made…
- 14:05Tad Eggleston: overexposed.
- 14:06Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah.
- 14:07Matt: Painted art around.
- 14:08Dillon Gilbertson: Right.
- 14:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I mean, it seems like he eats this doll, and then this doll becomes his… Your turn.
- 14:14Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, it's a… it's a really basic…
- 14:18Dillon Gilbertson: Comeuppance, irony thing. He eats the doll.
- 14:22Dillon Gilbertson: Goes on a bad trip, the doll eats him.
- 14:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Maybe he just goes on a bad trip.
- 14:29Dillon Gilbertson: I mean, the doll definitely eats this guy.
- 14:31Dillon Gilbertson: Or at least it starts to cook him to eat him.
- 14:34Matt: He's got…
- 14:35Peter Eggleston Connor: At least part of his trip, for sure.
- 14:38Matt: Yep.
- 14:39Peter Eggleston Connor: And for some odd reason, there's a D12 involved, don't ask me why.
- 14:43Tad Eggleston: Whatever that shape is called.
- 14:46Peter Eggleston Connor: What?
- 14:47Tad Eggleston: Is it D12?
- 14:49Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, keep going. Oh, there's some shapes there.
- 14:51Dillon Gilbertson: just…
- 14:52Peter Eggleston Connor: Same thing.
- 14:52Dillon Gilbertson: I think those are just shapes, to be shaped.
- 14:54Peter Eggleston Connor: I know they're just shapes, but if you go to the last page, You see it again.
- 15:00Peter Eggleston Connor: And it's not… it's obviously… again, it's not actually a D12, because it doesn't have any sides marked, it's just a.
- 15:08Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, I wasn't… I wasn't a super big fan of this comic, it was really just kind of whatever.
- 15:12Matt: No, I think they were trying to play with perspective… It started better than it ended.
- 15:19Peter Eggleston Connor: That's also true.
- 15:23Tad Eggleston: Just…
- 15:25Peter Eggleston Connor: It was interesting, and then it stopped being.
- 15:27Matt: Yes.
- 15:28Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, actually, the point where he starts eating the doll is kind of weird in and of itself, so…
- 15:35Peter Eggleston Connor: But then, like, it's kind of redeemed, and then it's just sort of like…
- 15:40Dillon Gilbertson: At least I had to evolve.
- 15:43Peter Eggleston Connor: Into the world, and hits whatever that is on… Page 13.
- 15:50Peter Eggleston Connor: Before the doll finds him, it's kinda like… Whatever.
- 15:59Dillon Gilbertson: It was a complete story, it seemed. It had a beginning, a middle, and an end.
- 16:04Peter Eggleston Connor: Shut up.
- 16:07Dillon Gilbertson: It's dead.
- 16:07Peter Eggleston Connor: And?
- 16:08Dillon Gilbertson: even… even airtight garage, I was like, okay.
- 16:12Tad Eggleston: Now, I do have a question.
- 16:14Tad Eggleston: And I enjoyed Airtight Garage this time.
- 16:18Matt: I mean.
- 16:18Tad Eggleston: I often enjoy air… I never don't enjoy airtight garage.
- 16:22Dillon Gilbertson: But…
- 16:24Tad Eggleston: This was the first time that they started talking about levels, and I know from what little I've read of…
- 16:32Tad Eggleston: like, the broader-reaching plot of Airtight Garage, as it becomes harder and harder for me not to go read it.
- 16:39Tad Eggleston: Before we're done with it.
- 16:43Tad Eggleston: there's, you know, part of it is all essentially on one place, in different levels of that place, but is this the first time we've had the levels mentioned?
- 16:53Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't think so. Okay.
- 16:57Tad Eggleston: Things are going badly on second level.
- 17:00Tad Eggleston: And I feel like…
- 17:02Matt: I don't think so. I think it's been mentioned before.
- 17:05Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I feel like it was actually mentioned a long time ago. Okay.
- 17:10Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm not sure, like, it might have been mentioned various times throughout, but I do remember…
- 17:16Tad Eggleston: Maybe it got mentioned before I really knew about it, and I started looking for it after…
- 17:22Peter Eggleston Connor: I just remember at some moment where, like, the head of the robot man got snapped off, and they scurry into some hole, because the robot man is controlled by people.
- 17:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, and then they mentioned that they were going into a different level. I thought, but I could be completely wrong about that. I mean…
- 17:47Peter Eggleston Connor: It's hard to keep track of all the little details over… Months and months and months.
- 18:00Tad Eggleston: So… Yeah… No, I'm…
- 18:07Tad Eggleston: Like, I keep going back and forth on whether we… whether I want to finish it, or whether I want to take, like, a hiatus and have us…
- 18:14Tad Eggleston: Reed, airtight garage, and then come back.
- 18:17Dillon Gilbertson: Should we just skip Airtight Garage and every issue from here on out until we…
- 18:24Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know.
- 18:25Peter Eggleston Connor: No, he means, like, read it all… well, I mean, like, if we read it all right now, we could skip it for going forward, theoretically.
- 18:36Dillon Gilbertson: OnlyConnect, I…
- 18:42Dillon Gilbertson: I get that it's chess, Right. And it seems cool.
- 18:47Dillon Gilbertson: That they're having these arguments about, effectively, what the chess pieces can and should do.
- 18:56Dillon Gilbertson: And I just… I don't know if I act… I don't know if I like it or not. I thought it was cool, but I don't know if I actually like what's going on, if I understand what's going on.
- 19:04Matt: I… it's kind of like humanizing chess pieces.
- 19:08Dillon Gilbertson: Right, right.
- 19:09Matt: You know, I dug it, and it also had a very spy versus spy feel.
- 19:13Dillon Gilbertson: Sure.
- 19:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 19:15Dillon Gilbertson: What happened at the end of this? It's a one… it's the first of a series, right? Like, it's to be continued or whatever?
- 19:22Matt: Well, it's a two-partner in this issue.
- 19:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Excuse me.
- 19:24Dillon Gilbertson: Oh, yeah.
- 19:25Peter Eggleston Connor: I totally forgot that there was a second part of this, it'd be a shame.
- 19:29Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, it can…
- 19:30Tad Eggleston: Continues back near the back.
- 19:36Peter Eggleston Connor: There you go.
- 19:43Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I kind of just wish they had, like, considering it's just two parts, and it's in the same issue, I don't…
- 19:50Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know, it seems like it would have done better as a… not separated.
- 19:58Peter Eggleston Connor: But that's just my opinion.
- 20:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Then again, if they're stretching for content, and this is one of the better items they have, then maybe.
- 20:08Matt: They might have put it in to fill space, the second part, right?
- 20:12Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, or they were just trying to keep your attention for the entire comic or something.
- 20:22Dillon Gilbertson: I think I liked it?
- 20:25Tad Eggleston: I didn't dislike it, but I didn't love it.
- 20:30Tad Eggleston: Particularly.
- 20:30Peter Eggleston Connor: sleeping.
- 20:31Tad Eggleston: because, like, it's chess, and it's Tetris, and it's…
- 20:36Dillon Gilbertson: So I don't… I don't understand this end part, where he's like, the decisions of Magnus can all be debatable.
- 20:42Dillon Gilbertson: someone tells them, like, this is illegal, and it's like a… I don't know if this is, like, chess math that I don't understand.
- 20:49Dillon Gilbertson: And then at the end, it says cancel illegal.
- 20:52Dillon Gilbertson: transmit orders. I was like, well, are you canceling it, or are you transmitting it? Like, what are you doing? Is the move happening or not?
- 20:59Matt: Well, he's got 2…
- 21:01Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, it might just mean that he is overriding the illegaleness of it, I don't know.
- 21:13Matt: It reminded me of Ender's Game. Have any of you guys seen that or read that book?
- 21:16Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 21:18Tad Eggleston: I have meant to.
- 21:20Tad Eggleston: I haven't.
- 21:24Peter Eggleston Connor: There's something else I can remember. I do like this guy's.
- 21:26Tad Eggleston: space, though.
- 21:28Matt: We've got a mask on.
- 21:28Peter Eggleston Connor: the mask.
- 21:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 21:30Dillon Gilbertson: The art overall in this story was cool. I liked all of it.
- 21:35Matt: I did too.
- 21:36Dillon Gilbertson: Same with, with Buck Rogers. I really, I really liked Buck Rogers, I thought it was a good little thing.
- 21:43Matt: I was disappointed with it.
- 21:45Dillon Gilbertson: I was mad that I couldn't… I was mad that I couldn't read a lot of the panels.
- 21:49Matt: That's why I was disappointed.
- 21:50Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:54Dillon Gilbertson: Oh, yeah. I like at the end how horrid the bald guy looks when he's, like, in his vampire mode or whatever.
- 22:04Dillon Gilbertson: Also, he's like… so, when the bald guy turns into vampire…
- 22:11Dillon Gilbertson: Buck Rogers jumps on him, and he says something like, even carving my initials doesn't stop him. I'm like, did you think that that was, like, a better move than just stabbing him? Is carving your initials somehow more powerful than just stabbing the dude in the neck?
- 22:26Peter Eggleston Connor: You mean when the bald guy's doppelganger comes in place, right?
- 22:30Dillon Gilbertson: Well, it's… well, at the end, you're meant to question it, right? Because the guy's normal again, then they take off his shirt, and he's got the initials carved in his chest.
- 22:39Peter Eggleston Connor: But I think it's.
- 22:40Dillon Gilbertson: One of those, like, was it all a dream situations.
- 22:43Matt: Buck Rogers probably didn't want to kill him.
- 22:46Dillon Gilbertson: Even copying my initials doesn't work.
- 22:48Matt: Yeah, exactly!
- 22:49Dillon Gilbertson: like a jeez.
- 22:50Matt: Break his kneecap.
- 22:52Dillon Gilbertson: Take his kneecaps instead, how about that?
- 22:54Matt: initials in their chest.
- 22:58Tad Eggleston: I mean, that just felt…
- 22:59Peter Eggleston Connor: Something to do with a skull, and it's like, here's a skull.
- 23:04Matt: It's… it's got that weird, campy…
- 23:06Tad Eggleston: I was carving the initials into the chest the thing to do?
- 23:10Dillon Gilbertson: I don't know, that's what I'm saying. And also, to Peter's point, like, you're just showing this monster a skull.
- 23:17Dillon Gilbertson: It, like, melts.
- 23:18Peter Eggleston Connor: It's supposed to be a skull of itself, and the monsters are all fucking illusions, excuse my language, but…
- 23:24Dillon Gilbertson: I mean, maybe, yeah, I mean, that makes sense, I guess.
- 23:26Matt: divergent ears.
- 23:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Yes, Persioneers. Let me go say it some more.
- 23:32Matt: Another stuck of penis in my ear.
- 23:34Dillon Gilbertson: I would…
- 23:35Peter Eggleston Connor: Whoa.
- 23:36Dillon Gilbertson: I wanna… I wanna believe that there's some cool symbolism with, like, showing the skull to itself as its own skull, and it destroys it, but it's just… it was just… it was very weird to see.
- 23:47Peter Eggleston Connor: That's kind of one of those things where it's like…
- 23:48Peter Eggleston Connor: Hey, look at your skull, you're already dead.
- 23:51Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, get out of here, don't you know, you stupid idiot?
- 23:55Peter Eggleston Connor: Pretty much.
- 23:56Dillon Gilbertson: You're fuckin' dead already, you dummy.
- 23:58Matt: can't be sci-fi, like, early Star Trek, the first Star Trek series.
- 24:03Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 24:03Matt: And Buck Rogers, of course.
- 24:06Dillon Gilbertson: I love.
- 24:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Rogers, like, a show?
- 24:09Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:10Dillon Gilbertson: Well, I'm more of a Duck Dodgers guy myself, but…
- 24:14Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, no, I'm, I'm with you there.
- 24:17Dillon Gilbertson: I… I'll be honest.
- 24:18Matt: Yes, Gordon.
- 24:19Dillon Gilbertson: Just the sheer absurdity and the audacity of Buck Rogers to think that carving his initials is the most powerful move he can do to subdue this insane creature. It almost makes… this might be my favorite story in the book… in the thing. It's just so weird and hilarious.
- 24:38Matt: And for that exact reason, it's not my favorite.
- 24:40Dillon Gilbertson: I love it. It's so weird.
- 24:42Peter Eggleston Connor: Stupid. Is it just?
- 24:44Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, it's Buck Rogers, and, like, it just looks like the only…
- 24:48Peter Eggleston Connor: First of all, I'm not even sure that's a B. It does look a little bit like a… It looks like a TS, almost. Exactly!
- 24:56Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah.
- 24:58Dillon Gilbertson: I mean, maybe that's why it didn't work, is because he didn't effectively do his initials, he drew a TS instead, and so it wasn't as effective.
- 25:06Peter Eggleston Connor: If it was a fee, it would have worked. Supposed to be, like, his holy,
- 25:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Holy symbol, so it's just… Like, scra- or, you know…
- 25:17Peter Eggleston Connor: Carves his holy symbol into, sorry, his initials into the monster, and the monster will just go away, right?
- 25:23Dillon Gilbertson: I mean, even Zorro didn't have the audacity to think that the Z was what's gonna stop them.
- 25:29Matt: Correct.
- 25:31Peter Eggleston Connor: I think there was something else going on there.
- 25:34Tad Eggleston: I don't know if I believe that.
- 25:35Peter Eggleston Connor: I think he thought it was gonna stop other people by him putting a Z on them.
- 25:40Matt: And the word initials By itself, kind of implies two letters?
- 25:47Dillon Gilbertson: Oh, yeah, well, it actually doesn't… hold on, it doesn't say initials, I just realized. It says my initial.
- 25:54Dillon Gilbertson: Oh my god. So just, just B, so just his first name, the initial of his first.
- 25:59Matt: Ravi and Buck.
- 26:00Dillon Gilbertson: Fuck.
- 26:04Peter Eggleston Connor: It just reminds me of, a different buck. Anyhow…
- 26:08Dillon Gilbertson: like, oh, like, my name is Buck, kind of a situation, I know what you're saying.
- 26:12Matt: Cocoa?
- 26:13Dillon Gilbertson: I get you.
- 26:14Dillon Gilbertson: No, different, different one.
- 26:16Peter Eggleston Connor: I think, didn't that, didn't they do the whole bloody affair recently? Is that still in theaters?
- 26:23Dillon Gilbertson: I don't know, I mean, they did.
- 26:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 26:24Dillon Gilbertson: So in theaters.
- 26:25Tad Eggleston: My, the Kill Bill?
- 26:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Nope.
- 26:28Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 26:29Tad Eggleston: Jonah went yesterday, or… Saturday, rather.
- 26:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 26:35Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, that's my fault.
- 26:39Dillon Gilbertson: God.
- 26:42Dillon Gilbertson: carve a bead in the thing's chest, and you can't stop it, I don't know what does.
- 26:48Tad Eggleston: John's calling.
- 26:49Peter Eggleston Connor: Damn.
- 26:49Tad Eggleston: Maybe if he'd done a, an R… He used the wrong initial.
- 26:55Matt: Bright.
- 26:55Dillon Gilbertson: It's gotta be the other, Rogers, Rogers.
- 26:58Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, to be fair, depending on how we did it, it would have been an R for a moment.
- 27:04Peter Eggleston Connor: One of that?
- 27:05Dillon Gilbertson: That's true.
- 27:07Dillon Gilbertson: He just went too far. He started to die, and then he finished…
- 27:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Being like…
- 27:11Dillon Gilbertson: And then he finished the B, and then it came back.
- 27:13Peter Eggleston Connor: This is not like he made a, like, round B. He very much.
- 27:19Dillon Gilbertson: No, yeah, no, you're… yeah.
- 27:21Peter Eggleston Connor: You know, cut this into the game.
- 27:22Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, I'm gonna choose.
- 27:24Peter Eggleston Connor: That sent me to go this far into it.
- 27:26Dillon Gilbertson: Somewhere… somewhere between the panels, he did 90% of this B, and the thing started to weaken and die, and then he… and then he was like, oh, now he's weakened, and I can finish my B, and then finishes it, and then the thing regains its strength and starts to come after him again.
- 27:44Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, then a skull has to be used.
- 27:46Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, then we gotta go nuclear with the… with showing it its own skull.
- 27:50Peter Eggleston Connor: Showing it, that's already dead.
- 27:52Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 27:54Dillon Gilbertson: Anyway, Buck Rogers was bad.
- 27:58Dillon Gilbertson: I loved it. I'll be honest, I might say this is my favorite.
- 28:01Peter Eggleston Connor: It was bad, but it was funny bad.
- 28:05Dillon Gilbertson: I enjoyed it.
- 28:07Peter Eggleston Connor: What's that line? So bad it's good?
- 28:09Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 28:11Dillon Gilbertson: It's the Troll 2 of its day.
- 28:16Dillon Gilbertson: Alright, we can move on.
- 28:18Peter Eggleston Connor: Right.
- 28:19Tad Eggleston: I was trying to send the pictures to my cousin, but they didn't work from the iPad the way they were supposed to.
- 28:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Bummer.
- 28:31Tad Eggleston: So, I will try again.
- 28:34Tad Eggleston: In a second.
- 28:35Tad Eggleston: Rising to the occasion.
- 28:44Dillon Gilbertson: Thoughts? Thoughts on this one?
- 28:46Matt: I like the artwork.
- 28:49Dillon Gilbertson: Yep.
- 28:52Matt: It's a cute story, it's not…
- 28:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 28:56Peter Eggleston Connor: cloudy looking.
- 28:58Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 29:00Tad Eggleston: I… I would have liked a little bit more definition to the artwork.
- 29:05Matt: I like that stippled, no hard lines.
- 29:09Dillon Gilbertson: Very interesting.
- 29:10Tad Eggleston: No, I… and I'm… I'm not… I'm not completely disagreeing, I'm just saying… A little bit more definition.
- 29:19Tad Eggleston: I would have appreciated.
- 29:24Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, maybe color.
- 29:27Tad Eggleston: That might have done it.
- 29:30Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know.
- 29:34Tad Eggleston: And I feel like Little Red V3 would have worked a lot better.
- 29:38Tad Eggleston: and color.
- 29:39Matt: Probably.
- 29:41Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, especially since I don't know who Little Red V3 is… no, I'm kidding. I'm guessing it's the little robot.
- 29:47Matt: Which one's the red one?
- 29:51Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean, it's the Red Riding Hood story, but, like, there's just not enough. And clearly, like.
- 30:00Tad Eggleston: The tables get flipped at the end, but, like…
- 30:02Matt: Not in a way that makes a ton of sense.
- 30:06Matt: That's true.
- 30:07Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, not like the doll.
- 30:12Tad Eggleston: I mean…
- 30:13Matt: Right.
- 30:14Tad Eggleston: Say the doll made more sense.
- 30:16Dillon Gilbertson: I'm just saying, the tables get flipped with a dot, it makes more sense.
- 30:22Peter Eggleston Connor: In this case, it's just like, oh, you're pretending to be Mother Brain, and I'm shooting you.
- 30:31Peter Eggleston Connor: a grand generator.
- 30:40Tad Eggleston: But… yeah.
- 30:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 30:44Tad Eggleston: And then these are crazy times we live in?
- 30:48Tad Eggleston: The better to discombobulate you with.
- 30:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 31:01Tad Eggleston: It's just… and I think also color would have worked better because of the level of detail to, like, all the circuit boards behind.
- 31:10Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 31:10Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I do really like the detail of the grand generator, and of the first few pages, really.
- 31:16Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I mean, there's a lot to like about this story.
- 31:19Matt: Oh, yeah.
- 31:20Tad Eggleston: And I just think…
- 31:26Tad Eggleston: some basic color, like Mobius-style… not overly… .
- 31:36Peter Eggleston Connor: The design of Wolfbot is pretty good, or whatever that thing is.
- 31:40Tad Eggleston: Oh, I like the, I like the design of, V3, too.
- 31:46Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, no, it's a good design.
- 31:48Tad Eggleston: and… I… I thought kind of the… the… they went almost too far with the…
- 31:55Tad Eggleston: Oh, Grand Generator, what big Matagulls you have!
- 32:01Tad Eggleston: The better to… Mad Goli is you, my dear.
- 32:08Dillon Gilbertson: I mean, if you're gonna do it… We're gonna go, go hard.
- 32:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Go hard.
- 32:19Peter Eggleston Connor: The quiet one.
- 32:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, just… In the Grail War, I didn't actually read, but the art was great.
- 32:29Peter Eggleston Connor: That is some pretty great art.
- 32:31Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, like this skelly boy, this grim… this grim boy in the back there.
- 32:35Matt: Yep.
- 32:42Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, I also did not read this one.
- 32:45Tad Eggleston: This helmet doesn't look very practical.
- 32:48Matt: It reminds me of, Monty Python.
- 32:51Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, the piece when he's the black knight.
- 32:53Tad Eggleston: It kind of reminds me of IG-88.
- 32:56Matt: It does, yeah.
- 32:57Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, I can see that.
- 33:00Dillon Gilbertson: I mean, just the big thing on top of its head? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:04Dillon Gilbertson: That's all you need. That's all… that's all that defines IG-88, is that this is his head.
- 33:09Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, I guess, like…
- 33:11Peter Eggleston Connor: Theoretically, it's better than getting hit directly in the head, but it doesn't… yeah. No, it just seems like it's making a bigger target for him. I don't know.
- 33:23Dillon Gilbertson: Very top-heavy.
- 33:24Dillon Gilbertson: Nick Cross.
- 33:25Peter Eggleston Connor: Unless it's set up so that when it gets hit, it, you know, breaks.
- 33:33Peter Eggleston Connor: In most case, I could see an advantage for that, but…
- 33:43Peter Eggleston Connor: But something tells me that's not the case.
- 33:46Dillon Gilbertson: This, this Elvis story…
- 33:50Tad Eggleston: Elvis the Mushroom Dragon?
- 33:53Dillon Gilbertson: it has two of my favorite panels.
- 34:01Matt: Yeah, this was a great… this was a fun read. I really liked this story.
- 34:04Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 34:05Matt: And I love the Tolkien-esque, music on one of the pages, where.
- 34:10Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah!
- 34:11Matt: But you have to sing it!
- 34:13Dillon Gilbertson: so cool!
- 34:15Tad Eggleston: That was cool.
- 34:17Tad Eggleston: That page kicks ass.
- 34:19Matt: It does.
- 34:19Tad Eggleston: That… that was in the running for my panel.
- 34:28Tad Eggleston: But I don't think it wins.
- 34:30Dillon Gilbertson: And then, like, a few pages down, this one with, like.
- 34:34Dillon Gilbertson: The dinosaur on the cliffside in, like, this cloud skull situation.
- 34:39Dillon Gilbertson: Pretty fucking cool.
- 34:53Matt: Yes, this was a fun read, good story.
- 34:57Tad Eggleston: It was.
- 34:58Tad Eggleston: I still think that I liked its reference in the Disco Edito.
- 35:05Dillon Gilbertson: Hmm.
- 35:06Tad Eggleston: better than I liked it as a Story.
- 35:09Tad Eggleston: Cause among other things, I also, like…
- 35:13Tad Eggleston: We've talked about this a few times in Heavy Metal, where…
- 35:17Tad Eggleston: It feels more like an illustrated story than a comic.
- 35:21Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 35:22Matt: Yeah, absolutely.
- 35:24Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 35:25Matt: Which is what Elric, I think, tried to do?
- 35:28Matt: But we'll get that, we'll get to that.
- 35:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah, we'll get to Elric.
- 35:33Tad Eggleston: But yeah, the art… the art was good. It was fun.
- 35:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 35:40Tad Eggleston: But… .
- 35:42Peter Eggleston Connor: Very colorful.
- 35:44Tad Eggleston: The bus?
- 35:47Tad Eggleston: like… I love Paul Karchner's art.
- 35:53Tad Eggleston: and this might be the least interesting bus, to me, anyway.
- 36:00Tad Eggleston: Cuz, yeah, like, they're fantastic creatures, and I love that.
- 36:05Tad Eggleston: But I'm used to, like… and I like what he does with perspective with the bus.
- 36:09Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, it doesn't…
- 36:10Tad Eggleston: have anything with perspective.
- 36:11Dillon Gilbertson: There's no, there's no real, like…
- 36:13Tad Eggleston: Here, it's just…
- 36:14Dillon Gilbertson: It doesn't pull the rug out from under you at all, it doesn't slip anything on its head, it's just, oh, a weird thing happening.
- 36:20Tad Eggleston: It's just a weird group of people crossing the street and getting honked at.
- 36:25Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 36:25Peter Eggleston Connor: She goes, no.
- 36:27Matt: The little guy at the end, he crosses before he's… after he's not supposed to, because the light changed.
- 36:33Matt: So now he's got a hustle, and he's getting honked at.
- 36:37Dillon Gilbertson: So, like, the what?
- 36:40Tad Eggleston: No, I got that, but it's still… like…
- 36:50Tad Eggleston: The only part of the conceit here is that it's creatures crossing the street rather than…
- 36:57Matt: people.
- 37:02Peter Eggleston Connor: You're right. You should have just made it people, and we should have just had a very, very in-depth look at people crossing the street.
- 37:10Dillon Gilbertson: That would be…
- 37:11Tad Eggleston: I'm not saying that. I would've made it worse. I'm just… I'm just saying…
- 37:13Peter Eggleston Connor: leave it again.
- 37:14Tad Eggleston: And, like… No, I'm sorry, I was trying to be funny.
- 37:18Tad Eggleston: does such interesting things with perspective and playing with the medium, generally. And this is about content rather than delivery.
- 37:31Peter Eggleston Connor: Sure.
- 37:32Matt: Thank you so much.
- 37:32Tad Eggleston: It's kind of an outlier, and I don't dislike it, I just… it's not as, like…
- 37:39Tad Eggleston: And, like, if I wasn't comparing it to other the buses… Right.
- 37:44Peter Eggleston Connor: Sure. No, I was gonna say, to me, this is his…
- 37:48Peter Eggleston Connor: hey, I don't have any ideas right now, go throw this together and, you know, take it or leave it, right?
- 37:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 37:57Dillon Gilbertson: It's worth it.
- 37:58Peter Eggleston Connor: The half page, and they're just trying to get content, they took it, right?
- 38:02Dillon Gilbertson: If this were the only bus, it would be the best bus.
- 38:05Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm not finished.
- 38:07Tad Eggleston: For that matter, I'm even a little bit disappointed that the windshield wipers aren't moving.
- 38:13Tad Eggleston: They're in, like, an up position.
- 38:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I'm trying to remember where a bus's window shield might be to stop, but that definitely doesn't seem like it's right.
- 38:24Dillon Gilbertson: It's definitely not right in the middle.
- 38:27Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 38:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, I mean, like, it might stop in the middle of, like, the panel…
- 38:32Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah, I know.
- 38:34Peter Eggleston Connor: But it's not gonna stop half-hedged.
- 38:37Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, one of them is.
- 38:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Right, and it's not gonna… I don't think any of it's gonna… or much of it's gonna be blocking the window.
- 38:46Peter Eggleston Connor: Normally, I think it's just, like, a single…
- 38:48Tad Eggleston: How much time you're spending on… 8.
- 38:51Matt: Always spend the time on the bus.
- 38:53Dillon Gilbertson: rationally.
- 38:54Matt: I love it.
- 38:55Matt: My only critique.
- 38:56Peter Eggleston Connor: And to be perfectly honest, it's your fault, man!
- 39:00Tad Eggleston: That's true.
- 39:01Matt: Can I just say my only critique about the bus? In the first panel, the light should be yellow.
- 39:07Tad Eggleston: Oh, that would be good. Yeah, yeah.
- 39:08Matt: Because then you'd understand, these guys just stopped, now these people are crossing.
- 39:15Matt: I feel like that was a missed opportunity, but other than that, it was great.
- 39:19Peter Eggleston Connor: No.
- 39:28Peter Eggleston Connor: A world between. Everybody read it? Everybody read it? No? No?
- 39:32Matt: Nice.
- 39:33Peter Eggleston Connor: You've read it twice?
- 39:35Matt: I'm joking.
- 39:36Peter Eggleston Connor: No, I.
- 39:37Tad Eggleston: Oh, good on you. I did not.
- 39:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, and then Elric came, and my first instinct with Elric was, oh, it's prose, it looks like it has some pretty imagery, but I'm not gonna read this. And then it, like, did this devious switch from…
- 39:54Peter Eggleston Connor: being pros to actually being a comic, and I was like…
- 39:58Dillon Gilbertson: You son, I love it.
- 39:59Peter Eggleston Connor: I actually went back to try and read the first bit, which was not…
- 40:04Matt: Yeah, it reads like the Silmarillion by Tolkien.
- 40:06Dillon Gilbertson: Ehhh…
- 40:09Tad Eggleston: Michael Moore.
- 40:10Matt: That's hard to get.
- 40:10Tad Eggleston: Is an acquired taste.
- 40:13Tad Eggleston: But, damn.
- 40:14Peter Eggleston Connor: Andrew is great.
- 40:15Tad Eggleston: it.
- 40:16Matt: Yeah, but Bruner's artwork, Frank Bruner drawing this stuff…
- 40:20Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, no, the art was amazing.
- 40:22Tad Eggleston: But I just… I decided just not to read the words, even in the parts that were more comic.
- 40:28Matt: You could read the words?
- 40:32Matt: I couldn't.
- 40:36Peter Eggleston Connor: But, yeah, it was not an easy thing to get through.
- 40:42Tad Eggleston: The art is pretty.
- 40:44Peter Eggleston Connor: the artist.
- 40:44Matt: Yo.
- 40:45Peter Eggleston Connor: I like… I like the green eyes there, yeah.
- 40:48Tad Eggleston: to have the.
- 40:48Peter Eggleston Connor: I like the one previous where the…
- 40:51Peter Eggleston Connor: Woman looks like she's being possessed.
- 40:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 40:57Matt: Yeah, this… the crappy dialogue…
- 41:00Matt: That was not to slay you, it was to persuade you from attacking me so I show you my prowess. I just… ugh, it was hard. It was painful.
- 41:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 41:10Dillon Gilbertson: enough.
- 41:10Tad Eggleston: And then we got to the…
- 41:11Matt: Oh, wait, devil!
- 41:15Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, I really like this, this bottom panel here.
- 41:18Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, that's cool.
- 41:19Tad Eggleston: The chess pieces shooting out. That was pretty cool.
- 41:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Hitting, like, what seems to be the end of space.
- 41:28Matt: Well, no, they're doing a hype.
- 41:29Peter Eggleston Connor: black.
- 41:30Peter Eggleston Connor: Right?
- 41:31Matt: They're doing a hyperjump from one square to another.
- 41:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I think you're right.
- 41:36Peter Eggleston Connor: But…
- 41:37Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah.
- 41:38Peter Eggleston Connor: It's still amusing.
- 41:39Matt: Yeah, no, I love it. I really like this.
- 41:42Matt: story.
- 41:46Peter Eggleston Connor: This is only Kinect, the spirit of the game, this is the second part, continued from earlier.
- 41:52Tad Eggleston: Page 24.
- 41:59Tad Eggleston: And then there's another shoot-em-off-into-space.
- 42:02Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I like that one too. I like how they're… they're conclave and convex as well.
- 42:11Tad Eggleston: I kinda like the chess pieces in Space Battle.
- 42:14Dillon Gilbertson: Pew, pew, pew.
- 42:16Peter Eggleston Connor: Joe.
- 42:29Dillon Gilbertson: Oh, I didn't notice that the… the panels here are, like, checkered.
- 42:34Tad Eggleston: Well, and see, we get the… the…
- 42:38Dillon Gilbertson: A little game…
- 42:39Tad Eggleston: It also turns out that, like, maybe we had people, like.
- 42:44Tad Eggleston: Yeah, you got the hand coming from outer space… Starts messing with perspective.
- 42:50Matt: And that's why it had that Ender's Game feel to me.
- 42:53Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 42:54Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 42:59Tad Eggleston: They actually.
- 43:00Matt: AirTight garage was great.
- 43:02Tad Eggleston: Very much enjoyed this part of Airtight Garage.
- 43:05Matt: I enjoyed this half better than the first half.
- 43:08Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Particularly, like, right now, it's…
- 43:14Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I don't think it's changing. This is my favorite panel.
- 43:17Tad Eggleston: The harpoon at the.
- 43:18Dillon Gilbertson: Submarine.
- 43:19Tad Eggleston: in the…
- 43:22Matt: There's a lot to unpack there.
- 43:24Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 43:26Dillon Gilbertson: Submarine…
- 43:30Tad Eggleston: crashing waves.
- 43:35Tad Eggleston: I don't even know how to describe the sky.
- 43:39Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, lightning bolts.
- 43:41Matt: I'm Lesbury. Naive.
- 43:42Tad Eggleston: So, 3 sons.
- 43:45Matt: Yeah?
- 43:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 43:47Matt: Or those moons.
- 43:48Tad Eggleston: For that matter, the panel above it's pretty damn good, too.
- 43:51Matt: Yup.
- 43:52Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 43:57Tad Eggleston: Then we got some more Telefield.
- 44:00Matt: Yeah, this was…
- 44:02Dillon Gilbertson: Meh.
- 44:03Tad Eggleston: That's pretty much what Telefield has been.
- 44:05Dillon Gilbertson: Meh, meh.
- 44:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Why you guys don't love Tunnelfield?
- 44:09Tad Eggleston: I do, I do kind of like this, this, this… explosion.
- 44:13Dillon Gilbertson: I've seen better.
- 44:14Matt: Almost Corbin-esque, but it's not.
- 44:15Peter Eggleston Connor: I've seen better.
- 44:18Matt: Yeah.
- 44:18Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah,
- 44:19Peter Eggleston Connor: I was gonna say, my favorite panel, keep going, one more page. See that little, little panel there in the very bottom?
- 44:27Dillon Gilbertson: What?
- 44:27Tad Eggleston: end.
- 44:31Dillon Gilbertson: I get it.
- 44:32Peter Eggleston Connor: Bad joke. Bad joke.
- 44:34Matt: What?
- 44:34Dillon Gilbertson: I get the joke.
- 44:36Matt: you're bad.
- 44:37Tad Eggleston: Shelter continues to be good.
- 44:39Matt: Oh yeah, my God, this was my favorite story.
- 44:42Tad Eggleston: makes me want to, like, go… I still have it, I have it, but it makes me need to read the better translation in 1996 even more.
- 44:53Tad Eggleston: Oh. Yeah.
- 44:55Tad Eggleston: Because the shelter is really good.
- 45:03Tad Eggleston: But, I mean, frankly, for my money, if they… if they had given us the shelter, airtight garage,
- 45:13Tad Eggleston: the… the Game 1… Maybe the car from space, and then more alien?
- 45:24Tad Eggleston: I would have been happier.
- 45:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Wait, no, no Elvis.
- 45:29Matt: I can see where you're coming from.
- 45:31Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean, if they.
- 45:34Peter Eggleston Connor: I needed Elvis to fill out.
- 45:37Tad Eggleston: Again, if they would add color to Little Red V3.
- 45:41Peter Eggleston Connor: Sure.
- 45:42Tad Eggleston: And if there was space for Elvis, I mean, it all depends on how much Alien they were gonna give us.
- 45:48Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, I'm just saying, there's only, like, 64 pages.
- 45:50Tad Eggleston: I just told you.
- 45:51Peter Eggleston Connor: cutting out, I feel like they're…
- 45:55Peter Eggleston Connor: Still be room for a few of these things.
- 45:58Tad Eggleston: No, and that's my point, is like, I hope that they'd keep Elvis rather than Telefield.
- 46:08Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 46:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Unfortunately, that probably wouldn't happen, just cause it's ongoing.
- 46:15Tad Eggleston: But also, because Elvis is a one-shot thing, they could have dropped it
- 46:19Tad Eggleston: And some other issue that they needed.
- 46:21Matt: Filler.
- 46:22Matt: Absolutely.
- 46:23Peter Eggleston Connor: So, some other issue could have been bad, is what you're saying.
- 46:27Tad Eggleston: No, see, if you're not having to use.
- 46:30Peter Eggleston Connor: He's awful.
- 46:30Tad Eggleston: All the filler in one issue?
- 46:33Tad Eggleston: Then the filler generally plays better.
- 46:36Matt: Do you know how insulting it is that we're calling these stories fillers?
- 46:42Matt: I would feel like coffee fillers!
- 46:44Tad Eggleston: I would feel much less comfortable Doing so…
- 46:50Tad Eggleston: If it was 40 years ago.
- 46:52Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, okay. The one 40 years ago?
- 46:55Matt: Yeah, I get that.
- 46:56Tad Eggleston: Because I'm more comfortable doing so now, because the chances that I'm actually insulting somebody, or turning off
- 47:05Tad Eggleston: Somebody from something that they could have gone and helped somebody's career are slim to none, particularly because we didn't do a particularly good job of introducing artists this episode.
- 47:18Matt: That's true.
- 47:19Peter Eggleston Connor: That's also true.
- 47:22Tad Eggleston: So, essentially, all we've said is, Mobius, good. Montelier, Montelier, good.
- 47:33Matt: Elvis.
- 47:33Tad Eggleston: You're looking at single-ish… Of… heavy metal. Maybe don't pay more than a couple bucks for this one.
- 47:46Peter Eggleston Connor: 7.30, Peter got a hard out.
- 47:49Tad Eggleston: No, no, he's got a heart out at 7.30, my time.
- 47:53Matt: Oh, oh, okay, that makes way more sense. I was like, holy crap.
- 47:57Tad Eggleston: I mean, I don't think we're gonna make it to there.
- 48:00Peter Eggleston Connor: No, I mean, we're almost… I mean, we just got through months.
- 48:02Tad Eggleston: This is the last story.
- 48:03Peter Eggleston Connor: Yay.
- 48:03Matt: Yeah, this is the last story.
- 48:05Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, we're on Montelier, which is.
- 48:07Tad Eggleston: And I love how they split up them all, and I'm…
- 48:13Tad Eggleston: It's so organized that here's my question.
- 48:19Tad Eggleston: Is it eventually gonna turn out that the twist is no bomb went off?
- 48:25Matt: I thought the same thing.
- 48:27Peter Eggleston Connor: I think we've talked about that before.
- 48:29Tad Eggleston: We might have.
- 48:31Tad Eggleston: Because it really feels like they built a bomb shelter, and they set this all up, and we have decided that we will stay in our…
- 48:43Matt: Administrative position.
- 48:44Tad Eggleston: Administrative positions.
- 48:46Matt: Yeah. Dicks.
- 48:50Tad Eggleston: I mean, it just… it feels like, hmm, how can Mall Administrator become a cool job?
- 48:57Matt: Yeah, exactly.
- 48:59Peter Eggleston Connor: You mean more on the lines of…
- 49:03Peter Eggleston Connor: How can I go off and try to…
- 49:06Peter Eggleston Connor: Take advantage of people and create my own mini-empire.
- 49:11Matt: Yeah, exactly. On the surface, it feels like a fallout story, but it's got this nice, political twist where people are trying to seize power very quickly and control the masses.
- 49:24Peter Eggleston Connor: It'll be interesting to see what happens.
- 49:26Tad Eggleston: They planned… they had planned for this in their mall.
- 49:29Matt: Exactly, like, look, we got.
- 49:31Peter Eggleston Connor: Not bad.
- 49:32Matt: Lumber badges for all of you?
- 49:33Peter Eggleston Connor: It'll be interesting to see where this goes, it's just…
- 49:37Matt: Yes.
- 49:37Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm not sure, like, part of me is like, okay, if the mall, like, just shut down and there wasn't any sort of actual.
- 49:45Matt: Emergency.
- 49:46Peter Eggleston Connor: Emergency, then at some point, they're gonna be at odds with some outside force that's not radioactive waste.
- 49:55Peter Eggleston Connor: It's probably gonna be, you know, an outside military force instead.
- 50:00Peter Eggleston Connor: Or, you know, maybe there'll first be some… some people just thinking that it needs to be opened up and rescued, unless…
- 50:09Peter Eggleston Connor: You know, they're sending off fake…
- 50:12Peter Eggleston Connor: Fake, emissions of some weird… Shut down, right?
- 50:19Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know.
- 50:21Peter Eggleston Connor: It'll be an interesting ride. It's… it's good fun so far.
- 50:25Peter Eggleston Connor: By which I mean there's definitely deviousness going on, and… pottery, and…
- 50:31Dillon Gilbertson: pottery.
- 50:33Peter Eggleston Connor: Lottery.
- 50:35Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, you know, words. They're great, aren't they? I totally know them right now.
- 50:42Peter Eggleston Connor: Definitely not recovering from being sick.
- 50:44Dillon Gilbertson: bigly words.
- 50:47Matt: I like the dude's Dorito pajamas there, or pizza slice pajamas.
- 50:51Dillon Gilbertson: That's clearly pi.
- 50:53Matt: Okay, my pajamas.
- 50:55Dillon Gilbertson: Clearly.
- 50:56Peter Eggleston Connor: It reminds me of the, like, weird, like, the weird, their tacos.
- 51:00Matt: Thought it was the reaction.
- 51:01Peter Eggleston Connor: Colors.
- 51:02Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah. It's almost like a Rocco's…
- 51:04Peter Eggleston Connor: It's not that weird, like, 80s, whatever.
- 51:08Peter Eggleston Connor: Designs.
- 51:12Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, I guess this is what happened in 79, so it couldn't be those, right?
- 51:17Tad Eggleston: Is there a reason that they're in formal wear, or did that just happen?
- 51:22Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't remember. I feel like…
- 51:26Matt: It didn't…
- 51:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Is that informal wear this entire time? That's the question.
- 51:31Matt: I feel like they just went to the mall and got new clothes to suit their assignment.
- 51:34Tad Eggleston: I don't even think they're informal… are they informal wear for the whole… oh, no, they're informal wear and paid.
- 51:39Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, they're informal all throughout this episode, or this issue, rather, but…
- 51:46Peter Eggleston Connor: But I don't remember if they were in formal wear in previous…
- 51:48Tad Eggleston: I don't either.
- 51:50Peter Eggleston Connor: I think they might have been.
- 51:52Tad Eggleston: I'm gonna have to pull out my Montelier book.
- 52:00Tad Eggleston: I love how she gets to make a library. They've got everything since Gutenberg, and he's gotta learn to be…
- 52:09Tad Eggleston: Is it a…
- 52:09Matt: Electrician.
- 52:10Tad Eggleston: or a plumber?
- 52:11Matt: No.
- 52:12Dillon Gilbertson: I didn't know Steve wrote a boat.
- 52:14Matt: Wouldn't it already be cataloged?
- 52:16Matt: That's what kind of threw me. Like, the bookstore has a catalog of what it has.
- 52:20Tad Eggleston: Well, but that… that to me is more evidence that, that it's, like, staged.
- 52:29Tad Eggleston: You know, they brought everything in…
- 52:33Matt: We're gonna give you meaningless jobs.
- 52:35Matt: That make you feel purpose.
- 52:37Tad Eggleston: Right, right.
- 52:38Matt: We can control you.
- 52:39Tad Eggleston: And there are no kids now, but, you know, some later point, they're gonna start… advocating for…
- 52:48Tad Eggleston: Children to be made.
- 52:50Tad Eggleston: To give them more purpose.
- 52:54Matt: I mean…
- 52:54Peter Eggleston Connor: Aren't there kids? There's that little kid.
- 52:57Tad Eggleston: I thought there were, like… doesn't he say there are, like, 3 children in the whole place? That's why he can't be a teacher?
- 53:03Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh.
- 53:04Matt: Yes.
- 53:05Peter Eggleston Connor: That's right.
- 53:06Peter Eggleston Connor: He does say that.
- 53:09Matt: Yeah, there are only 3 kids in the whole center.
- 53:12Tad Eggleston: A remedial math teacher.
- 53:14Matt: Yep.
- 53:23Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know.
- 53:25Peter Eggleston Connor: If it's, anything like today, they probably still need a remedial math teacher.
- 53:30Tad Eggleston: Well, they might at some point.
- 53:31Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, I didn't mean for the kid.
- 53:35Peter Eggleston Connor: No!
- 53:36Tad Eggleston: No, because the administrators don't want everybody else to know math.
- 53:41Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, the administrators need to know math, though.
- 53:44Tad Eggleston: No, they don't.
- 53:47Peter Eggleston Connor: He obviously needed to be put in finance.
- 53:51Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, I'm close… Finance position, where you can only see the parts of it.
- 53:56Peter Eggleston Connor: Only how slowly assimilate it all and figure it out.
- 54:03Peter Eggleston Connor: Nevermind. Anyhow.
- 54:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 54:07Tad Eggleston: And I don't know, they all have to sleep in the same…
- 54:11Matt: Furniture department?
- 54:12Tad Eggleston: Furniture department.
- 54:14Tad Eggleston: There are 800-some-odd people, do they sleep in shifts, and there's…
- 54:18Matt: That's a big branch of the apartment. Right?
- 54:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Like, and there's no, like, room, like.
- 54:25Matt: Privacy. No wonder I don't have enough kids.
- 54:28Tad Eggleston: You would think that they would allow for the beds to be moved places.
- 54:32Peter Eggleston Connor: Right? Yeah, I… I kinda suspect, if it… it might still be day one, and, like.
- 54:41Peter Eggleston Connor: I can expect there are things that need to be done before other things are done, but…
- 54:46Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I have to suspect that they can't just, like, leave all the beds next to each other.
- 54:53Matt: long.
- 54:53Tad Eggleston: Well, but, I mean, it seems like that's what the administrators want.
- 54:58Tad Eggleston: Organize a communal lifestyle, which be as pleasant as possible.
- 55:05Peter Eggleston Connor: So, you know,
- 55:08Peter Eggleston Connor: you can just, get your… get your jollies by going to the bedroom and, seeing who's doing it at the time. Gotcha.
- 55:15Tad Eggleston: Something like that.
- 55:20Peter Eggleston Connor: Sorry, this was before Christmas.
- 55:21Tad Eggleston: The guy in the glasses is weird, too, with the E on his shirt.
- 55:26Peter Eggleston Connor: E is for everyone.
- 55:28Peter Eggleston Connor: No, not.
- 55:31Matt: Today's episode is brought to you by the letter E.
- 55:37Peter Eggleston Connor: Does he have a stethoscope?
- 55:39Peter Eggleston Connor: Do you get a doctor?
- 55:40Tad Eggleston: BB?
- 55:43Tad Eggleston: Or is it… that, I think, is his numbered badge, because everybody has one.
- 55:48Dillon Gilbertson: Oh, yeah.
- 55:51Matt: Yeah, I see what you're talking about, I'm guessing bad.
- 55:53Peter Eggleston Connor: bench.
- 55:54Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 56:04Tad Eggleston: Let's see.
- 56:04Dillon Gilbertson: It's not as good as fuck rides.
- 56:06Tad Eggleston: Rather than eating all over the center, it would be preferable if meals were served at fixed times in the cafeteria, which seats 1,000 people.
- 56:16Matt: How's my initial in your chest.
- 56:18Tad Eggleston: Sleeping quarters will be set up in the furniture department.
- 56:23Peter Eggleston Connor: So, they're sleeping all at the same time.
- 56:26Peter Eggleston Connor: In the furniture department, dude.
- 56:30Peter Eggleston Connor: Apparently.
- 56:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah… I don't know.
- 56:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, this doesn't… this seems like they were like, oh, we'll put together a nuclear apocalypse plan.
- 56:45Peter Eggleston Connor: And they just sort of half-assed it, and then they were like, It's definitely.
- 56:50Tad Eggleston: Something fishy going on here.
- 56:52Matt: I was just thinking about this. They're not half-assing it. They're trying to imagine what this situation would be like, and we're just so fucking jaded, because we're so close to that now, and you can't even know exactly what we're doing. You mean… you mean because we're living in it?
- 57:08Matt: That's what I'm saying, like, I feel like this is, like, someone's real honest attempt to, like, try and put this on paper and be like, it might be like this. I'm like, dude, you got it wrong.
- 57:20Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, I guess…
- 57:21Tad Eggleston: You could be right about that.
- 57:23Peter Eggleston Connor: 40 years later, things are.
- 57:25Matt: Oh, yeah!
- 57:25Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's gonna be interesting to see where it goes, because I could totally see the administrators being fascists.
- 57:33Matt: Oh, absolutely.
- 57:35Matt: Yeah, this was my favorite story and my favorite ongoing.
- 57:39Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 57:39Matt: Loved it.
- 57:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Sorry.
- 57:42Matt: And I didn't like it for when I read the first piece.
- 57:45Matt: In the previous issue.
- 57:48Tad Eggleston: I feel like this is the third piece, isn't it?
- 57:50Matt: Well, whatever. It finally got interesting for me.
- 57:54Tad Eggleston: Heh, yeah.
- 57:57Tad Eggleston: Alright, so you're saying this is your favorite… And favorite ongoing.
- 58:02Matt: Yep.
- 58:03Matt: Buck Rogers.
- 58:05Dillon Gilbertson: Mark Rogers! I'm telling you guys!
- 58:11Tad Eggleston: For both?
- 58:13Dillon Gilbertson: No, I think Buck Rogers… I mean, Buck… we all know that there's a lot more Buck Rogers comics, but, like, I don't know if…
- 58:19Dillon Gilbertson: this… I don't know if it counts, I think it says END at the end.
- 58:23Matt: Yeah, we've never seen one before.
- 58:25Dillon Gilbertson: Well, it does say end at the end, right?
- 58:28Matt: So I can'.
- 58:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, they'll say that.
- 58:29Matt: where I'm going.
- 58:30Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah. So yeah, so that one's just my favorite story, because it's the best.
- 58:37Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, it's pretty amusing.
- 58:40Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 58:40Peter Eggleston Connor: choices.
- 58:42Tad Eggleston: Ongoing for Peter or Dylan?
- 58:45Tad Eggleston: Because mine's airtight garage.
- 58:48Matt: That was my second.
- 58:50Tad Eggleston: I feel like it was time to, while you're thinking, Tracy did weigh in and say that the shuttle wouldn't fly a convertible. Convertibles aren't very aerodynamic. How did the convertible get to space? And whether or not things fall into orbit depends on mass.
- 59:07Matt: You didn't… you didn't send her pictures?
- 59:09Tad Eggleston: I did, but she hasn't responded since.
- 59:11Matt: Oh, oh, okay.
- 59:14Peter Eggleston Connor: So… Yeah, that, that, that, that expands upon our problems.
- 59:21Peter Eggleston Connor: Favorite ongoing, I will also go with the second part of Airtight Garage.
- 59:27Dillon Gilbertson: I'm gonna say shelter.
- 59:29Tad Eggleston: So you're gonna specify the second part of airtight Garage.
- 59:33Peter Eggleston Connor: No.
- 59:34Matt: We do it.
- 59:35Peter Eggleston Connor: That's a solid choice, I respect that, Peter.
- 59:39Tad Eggleston: Me too!
- 59:44Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm not saying the first part isn't good, I just… it's not…
- 59:47Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 59:47Peter Eggleston Connor: They weren't ongoing.
- 59:49Tad Eggleston: Hell yeah.
- 59:50Dillon Gilbertson: Only one can be a favorite.
- 59:52Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, you could decide how to do it.
- 59:55Tad Eggleston: Both parts, but…
- 59:57Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, well, you're you, but I'm me.
- 59:59Dillon Gilbertson: Breaking the rules, it's your podcast, so you can do whatever you want.
- 1:00:02Tad Eggleston: Exactly.
- 1:00:03Matt: Exactly!
- 1:00:07Matt: Power corrupts, man.
- 1:00:10Peter Eggleston Connor: An absolute power crops, absolutely!
- 1:00:18Dillon Gilbertson: What's.
- 1:00:19Peter Eggleston Connor: I can't listen to Spider-Man's uncle about…
- 1:00:22Matt: Great power.
- 1:00:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Responsibility? Responsibility.
- 1:00:29Peter Eggleston Connor: Are we going on to Favorite Story?
- 1:00:33Matt: Spirit panel.
- 1:00:33Dillon Gilbertson: We all, we all, we all chose Buck Rogers.
- 1:00:40Tad Eggleston: a favorite ongoing?
- 1:00:42Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, shelter.
- 1:00:44Tad Eggleston: Okay, so Shelter was your favorite ongoing, too?
- 1:00:46Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:00:48Tad Eggleston: Okay, yeah, we're just down to Peter for favorite story, because mine.
- 1:00:52Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I was gonna say shelter for Favorite Story.
- 1:00:55Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:00:56Peter Eggleston Connor: You know, there's a lot of love for shelter and airtight garage.
- 1:01:00Tad Eggleston: As there should be.
- 1:01:01Dillon Gilbertson: Bold move. I'll let the comments rip you apart for not choosing Buck Rogers, I guess.
- 1:01:09Peter Eggleston Connor: Buck Roger's really good. I suppose I could have made some space for that, but I didn't.
- 1:01:15Dillon Gilbertson: Sure, sure.
- 1:01:16Tad Eggleston: Okay, I'm gonna let the comments rip me apart. I didn't… I thought the art was good in Buck Rogers.
- 1:01:23Tad Eggleston: I didn't think this.
- 1:01:24Dillon Gilbertson: I… I really… I'm… the fact that he carves his initials in there is carrying… it's carrying a lot of weight for me. See, see…
- 1:01:32Tad Eggleston: Whatever I was there.
- 1:01:35Dillon Gilbertson: Like, completely went away when he carved his initials.
- 1:01:41Peter Eggleston Connor: Genius, or really stupid, and…
- 1:01:43Matt: I just have to watch.
- 1:01:45Peter Eggleston Connor: Watch the, the… car wreck in motion. Train wreck in motion, I should say, yeah.
- 1:01:52Tad Eggleston: I'm in there.
- 1:01:52Matt: There is a car wreck in motion in this… carving my initials in for what we were taking.
- 1:01:57Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah.
- 1:01:57Peter Eggleston Connor: Not initials, initials.
- 1:01:59Matt: Sorry, right.
- 1:02:01Dillon Gilbertson: First initial.
- 1:02:02Dillon Gilbertson: Only Buck. The only part of his name that's important is Buck.
- 1:02:06Tad Eggleston: My panel is the airtight garage… the last panel of airtight Garage from this book.
- 1:02:13Tad Eggleston: the, the, the way.
- 1:02:14Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, that's.
- 1:02:15Matt: Yeah, that's a…
- 1:02:15Peter Eggleston Connor: That was a big part of the reason why I chose Airtight Garage for, for ongoing, or the second part of Airtight Garage for ongoing.
- 1:02:24Peter Eggleston Connor: Because I have a different panel on what it is, so…
- 1:02:28Tad Eggleston: Alright, what's your… what's your panel, then?
- 1:02:31Peter Eggleston Connor: Only connect on page 73, the bottom panel that we talked about. Nice,
- 1:02:39Peter Eggleston Connor: Convexing, black into white, and… Space, space chess pieces.
- 1:02:48Peter Eggleston Connor: Going into Hyper Warp or whatever.
- 1:02:56Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 1:02:57Peter Eggleston Connor: We need to jump.
- 1:03:01Tad Eggleston: That is nice.
- 1:03:04Dillon Gilbertson: My favorite panel is this rockin' lizard on 52.
- 1:03:09Dillon Gilbertson: Rage 52.
- 1:03:16Dillon Gilbertson: But I want to give honorable mention
- 1:03:20Dillon Gilbertson: to this, where'd it go? What page is this on?
- 1:03:27Dillon Gilbertson: this weird…
- 1:03:28Tad Eggleston: This rockin' lizard?
- 1:03:29Dillon Gilbertson: Yeah, that's the one.
- 1:03:31Dillon Gilbertson: It's so cool looking.
- 1:03:33Peter Eggleston Connor: That would be really rad.
- 1:03:35Dillon Gilbertson: But I want to give honorable mention to this weird… this weird… what seems like might be an ape-looking dude, on the advertisement on page 93.
- 1:03:48Dillon Gilbertson: for… for Mobius's… Arzak?
- 1:03:55Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, yeah.
- 1:03:56Tad Eggleston: I think that is just…
- 1:03:58Peter Eggleston Connor: I got it.
- 1:04:00Dillon Gilbertson: Just that dude's face… I don't know, I just get a lot of joy out of him.
- 1:04:04Peter Eggleston Connor: I mean, our back.
- 1:04:04Tad Eggleston: Join us after we were done with Arzak?
- 1:04:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Thank you, Dad.
- 1:04:08Dillon Gilbertson: I think so, yeah, I don't think you're right.
- 1:04:09Tad Eggleston: Okay, yeah, yeah, that's Arzak.
- 1:04:13Dillon Gilbertson: Just like that man's face.
- 1:04:15Peter Eggleston Connor: Arzak, spelled many different ways.
- 1:04:17Matt: Yes.
- 1:04:18Dillon Gilbertson: I believe it.
- 1:04:20Tad Eggleston: Kind of like Airtight Garage in all the different ways that the title is.
- 1:04:24Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 1:04:25Peter Eggleston Connor: Also true.
- 1:04:27Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, funny.
- 1:04:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Was that the same? Yeah, yeah, it was the same.
- 1:04:32Peter Eggleston Connor: Thank God.
- 1:04:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Airtight garage in Narzak?
- 1:04:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:04:38Peter Eggleston Connor: They're both Mobius.
- 1:04:39Tad Eggleston: Alright, Matt.
- 1:04:41Matt: First page of Elric.
- 1:04:44Dillon Gilbertson: Good morning.
- 1:04:49Matt: It made me want to read the whole story.
- 1:04:52Tad Eggleston: Did you?
- 1:04:53Matt: I tried to.
- 1:04:56Matt: I'm not lying!
- 1:04:59Tad Eggleston: That was a really cool… I mean, this is a shame, because I do like pros, I just… we haven't really run across a lot of pros in heavy metal that was actually good.
- 1:05:11Matt: Felt worth reading.
- 1:05:14Tad Eggleston: I mean, there was… there were a couple. There was the one that Dylan read that he liked so much that we had to read it.
- 1:05:24Tad Eggleston: That actually had me reading the prose for a while afterwards, but nothing else, like…
- 1:05:33Tad Eggleston: Yeah…
- 1:05:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:05:40Tad Eggleston: Alright, any more thoughts?
- 1:05:44Tad Eggleston: It was… it was an alright issue, I mean, like… It was okay.
- 1:05:47Peter Eggleston Connor: But there… there were… we've had… we've had worse issues.
- 1:05:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah, the last one.
- 1:05:54Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't even remember the last one.
- 1:05:58Tad Eggleston: The last, I mean, the last one, we, like…
- 1:06:06Tad Eggleston: We all chose the bus as the best ongoing.
- 1:06:10Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, really?
- 1:06:11Tad Eggleston: Two of us took Time Out, Opus, Infinity, and then A Space Story in Sympathy for the Devil.
- 1:06:17Tad Eggleston: Took the stories.
- 1:06:20Tad Eggleston: And, like, all of our favorite panels were from a couple of different pages.
- 1:06:26Peter Eggleston Connor: Opus Infinity was really good, I didn't remember that.
- 1:06:31Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, they also had that flying skater thing, freeways, that was kind of entertaining.
- 1:06:37Peter Eggleston Connor: Sorry, I just pulled it up.
- 1:06:39Tad Eggleston: No, I understand. I understand.
- 1:06:42Tad Eggleston: So, next month… Wait a minute, that feels like it's too far, because that took me to November.
- 1:06:52Peter Eggleston Connor: new RV.
- 1:06:53Tad Eggleston: November.
- 1:06:53Peter Eggleston Connor: City.
- 1:06:54Matt: This is, joe Dresco cover.
- 1:06:58Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that, that is correct, but…
- 1:07:01Matt: Love Joe Jesko's work.
- 1:07:02Peter Eggleston Connor: We don't want November. Well, there you go, I already know what my favorite, favorite, image for next time is.
- 1:07:10Matt: And I believe he told me this is the first time they had an exposed breast on the cover.
- 1:07:16Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, really?
- 1:07:20Peter Eggleston Connor: No, I got.
- 1:07:21Matt: I've met him a couple of times. He comes to Rochester Pretty… pretty frequently.
- 1:07:30Tad Eggleston: The one we want to look at is actually… This one.
- 1:07:35Tad Eggleston: I know.
- 1:07:36Peter Eggleston Connor: That was… That was last month. That was the last time.
- 1:07:41Matt: Do I not know?
- 1:07:43Dillon Gilbertson: Joe Six.
- 1:07:47Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, sex would be this time.
- 1:07:49Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know.
- 1:07:51Dillon Gilbertson: this time.
- 1:07:55Peter Eggleston Connor: Are we… are we without a preview?
- 1:07:58Tad Eggleston: Oh no!
- 1:07:59Dillon Gilbertson: Are we going in blind? Let's go in blind.
- 1:08:01Tad Eggleston: You wanna go in blind?
- 1:08:03Matt: Yeah, let's do it.
- 1:08:04Tad Eggleston: I mean, we can draw blind if you want.
- 1:08:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Sure.
- 1:08:08Peter Eggleston Connor: Also, what am I doing with all these, metal herlants and heavy metals that are new, that are stacking up?
- 1:08:17Peter Eggleston Connor: Anything? Nothing? Should I just delete that?
- 1:08:19Tad Eggleston: I…
- 1:08:20Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, I thought.
- 1:08:20Tad Eggleston: I've been reading them, and I would love to do some of the new ones.
- 1:08:25Tad Eggleston: I mean, we've got two issues of each at this point.
- 1:08:30Peter Eggleston Connor: I'm glad to bring that up on air.
- 1:08:31Tad Eggleston: This is actually… this is actually the… the… the 79… October is the H.P. Lovecraft.
- 1:08:37Matt: Lovecraft, yeah.
- 1:08:39Peter Eggleston Connor: On Earth.
- 1:08:40Matt: Good issue.
- 1:08:41Peter Eggleston Connor: more a world between? I thought we said we didn't want any more of that. Just kidding.
- 1:08:46Tad Eggleston: No, no, this is… this is an ad to go buy it.
- 1:08:52Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, well… there you go.
- 1:08:56Peter Eggleston Connor: They've… they hurt us all the way in the future.
- 1:09:02Tad Eggleston: Oh, I like that, that castle-looking thing. Final Justice looks pretty good.
- 1:09:07Peter Eggleston Connor: Maybe. I mean, the R looks pretty good.
- 1:09:09Dillon Gilbertson: I know justice.
- 1:09:13Peter Eggleston Connor: That's half the battle, at least. Well, more than half the battle, really, in comics.
- 1:09:18Tad Eggleston: Oh, the Dunwitch Horror?
- 1:09:21Peter Eggleston Connor: Interesting.
- 1:09:22Dillon Gilbertson: There's a Dunwich Horror comic, that's rad.
- 1:09:25Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:09:25Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, that is rare. I like that already.
- 1:09:27Tad Eggleston: Now, what is done with chore something that I should know?
- 1:09:32Peter Eggleston Connor: H.p. Lovecraft, right?
- 1:09:34Tad Eggleston: Oh, it is Lovecraft. Well, that would be why Lovecraft is on the… on the cover.
- 1:09:38Peter Eggleston Connor: Cthulhu.
- 1:09:38Tad Eggleston: Is it Cthulhu?
- 1:09:40Peter Eggleston Connor: Which is a really weird way to spell Cthulhu, I don't.
- 1:09:44Tad Eggleston: Well, it's Mobius.
- 1:09:46Peter Eggleston Connor: Right.
- 1:09:47Peter Eggleston Connor: As I said, I don't think it's supposed to be an actual Cthulhu.
- 1:09:51Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 1:09:53Peter Eggleston Connor: BN.
- 1:09:54Tad Eggleston: Zeno meets Dr.
- 1:09:55Peter Eggleston Connor: mouthy.
- 1:09:57Tad Eggleston: Also looks kinda cool.
- 1:09:59Peter Eggleston Connor: No thanks.
- 1:09:59Tad Eggleston: Thing?
- 1:10:03Peter Eggleston Connor: I don't know, next… next month's looks pretty good.
- 1:10:06Tad Eggleston: does.
- 1:10:06Dillon Gilbertson: This seemed very horror-centric, probably because it's October.
- 1:10:09Matt: Good issue.
- 1:10:11Tad Eggleston: Man from Black Hole. Man from Black Hole.
- 1:10:13Peter Eggleston Connor: Interesting.
- 1:10:15Dillon Gilbertson: HBO. HBO.
- 1:10:17Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh.
- 1:10:18Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, there you go.
- 1:10:20Dillon Gilbertson: A lot of, a lot of Lovecraft in this one.
- 1:10:23Tad Eggleston: Well, that might be why they put them on the cover. Both covers, even.
- 1:10:28Peter Eggleston Connor: Why they, they mentioned that.
- 1:10:32Dillon Gilbertson: How racist he was.
- 1:10:34Peter Eggleston Connor: Well, yeah, there is that, too.
- 1:10:40Dillon Gilbertson: Man writes… writes some sci-fi, though. He writes some good horror.
- 1:10:44Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah.
- 1:10:47Tad Eggleston: We do have… Oh, no, that's just an ad for the Grail War.
- 1:10:52Peter Eggleston Connor: Oh, yeah.
- 1:10:54Dillon Gilbertson: No, thanks.
- 1:10:57Tad Eggleston: I mean, depending on how it is as a book, it could be… But… yeah.
- 1:11:07Dillon Gilbertson: Alright.
- 1:11:08Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it looks… it looks good.
- 1:11:11Tad Eggleston: There doesn't have any, so, it…
- 1:11:18Tad Eggleston: Doesn't actually look like we have anything continuing.
- 1:11:23Peter Eggleston Connor: Yeah, it seems like it's a very much.
- 1:11:27Matt: one-shot issue.
- 1:11:30Tad Eggleston: A reason I bring this up is that would make it a particularly good time to do…
- 1:11:39Tad Eggleston: Some recent stuff if we wanted to.
- 1:11:45Tad Eggleston: Matt and Dylan, have you managed to get Heavy Metal Number 2 yet? Number 3 is also available.
- 1:11:52Matt: Negative.
- 1:11:53Dillon Gilbertson: I have none.
- 1:11:53Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:11:55Tad Eggleston: Metal or launt, I can hook you up with 2 and 3.
- 1:12:02Matt: Cool, let's start there.
- 1:12:04Dillon Gilbertson: This is the way.
- 1:12:05Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 1:12:06Tad Eggleston: So let, let, let's, let's, let's go… Present day.
- 1:12:12Tad Eggleston: For a couple of…
- 1:12:15Dillon Gilbertson: Okay.
- 1:12:16Tad Eggleston: episodes.
- 1:12:17Peter Eggleston Connor: We'll look into that and talk more about it off-air.
- 1:12:21Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:12:23Tad Eggleston: But, alright. So, Matt, take us out.
- 1:12:26Matt: We'll continue after the next page.
