- 0:00Speaker 1: This is the Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous podcast
- 0:03Speaker 1: with iHeartRadio.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Hey everyone, welcome to the Almost Famous podcast. Today we
- 0:08Speaker 2: have a special guest. It's Kendall Long and she is
- 0:12Speaker 2: telling us about this secrets that she has been holding
- 0:15Speaker 2: on to for years. Kendall, welcome to the podcast, and
- 0:20Speaker 2: it's a it's been a year and a half long secret.
- 0:24Speaker 3: Yeah, it's been around a year and a half, so
- 0:26Speaker 3: it's been quite a bit. Yeah.
- 0:29Speaker 2: So what's the secret? Tell people who didn't hear the headline,
- 0:31Speaker 2: so yes, So for those.
- 0:33Speaker 3: Who do not know, I've been married to my husband
- 0:37Speaker 3: Mitch for a little over a year and a half now.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Literally right before we left to Germany, we eloped to
- 0:45Speaker 3: Santa Barbara and then we the next day we hopped
- 0:48Speaker 3: on a flight and moved to Germany.
- 0:49Speaker 4: So good, all right, Well there's a lot to break
- 0:53Speaker 4: down here. First off, congratulations, thank you Kingarrats. Why was
- 0:58Speaker 4: it kept a secret? So obviously this was an intentional choice.
- 1:02Speaker 4: I'm assuming that it wasn't just like something you didn't
- 1:04Speaker 4: think of. Why did you to keep it a secret
- 1:07Speaker 4: for the first year and a half?
- 1:09Speaker 3: Well, we kept it a secret because our plan was
- 1:12Speaker 3: to get married, have the official wedding abroad in Germany,
- 1:16Speaker 3: and so we wanted to get married, and it made
- 1:19Speaker 3: it a lot easier to move to Germany as a
- 1:23Speaker 3: married couple because of Mitch's job. So you were going
- 1:26Speaker 3: to get married anyway. So we're like, we'll do this
- 1:28Speaker 3: and then we'll have the wedding when we're in Germany.
- 1:31Speaker 3: And a lot of things kind of transpired and changed
- 1:35Speaker 3: and our family, like, not all of our family could
- 1:38Speaker 3: go out to Germany to have a wedding or can
- 1:40Speaker 3: go abroad.
- 1:41Speaker 1: So.
- 1:43Speaker 3: That plan didn't happen, and time went on and I
- 1:47Speaker 3: was like, you know, I feel like I just want
- 1:49Speaker 3: to celebrate this now and to tell people.
- 1:51Speaker 2: So, yeah, what's his job that made it easier for
- 1:54Speaker 2: you guys to be married.
- 1:55Speaker 3: So he's an aerospace engineer, so he works on a
- 1:59Speaker 3: military base here in Stutgart, Germany. So it made it
- 2:04Speaker 3: so I was able to stay in Germany and we'd
- 2:07Speaker 3: be able to be together. And we were pretty confident
- 2:10Speaker 3: that we wanted to get married anyway, so and we
- 2:14Speaker 3: had just gotten engaged, so we just expedited the process
- 2:18Speaker 3: a little bit more.
- 2:19Speaker 2: You guys had been together for a little over I
- 2:21Speaker 2: want to say six months at the point where you
- 2:23Speaker 2: got married eight months maybe, okay that point yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and so well I think it maybe after announcing
- 2:30Speaker 3: it had been around six months. But yeah, so we
- 2:33Speaker 3: literally had met and got engaged and got married and
- 2:37Speaker 3: moved abroad like in less than a year.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Well, I hate interviewed to you guys when you'd only
- 2:42Speaker 2: been together for like two or three months. Yeah, and
- 2:45Speaker 2: it was very evident that you would be getting married
- 2:48Speaker 2: all things, based on your answers and is your behavior together,
- 2:53Speaker 2: oh things.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I felt like we knew pretty early on that
- 2:57Speaker 3: we were going to get married. Yeah, I mean after
- 2:59Speaker 3: the first date, we talked about babies, we talked about
- 3:02Speaker 3: like our life together, like where we were seeing ourselves,
- 3:05Speaker 3: and it kind of just felt like what we wanted
- 3:07Speaker 3: really aligned.
- 3:08Speaker 4: So remind all of our listeners and me, because I forget,
- 3:12Speaker 4: how did two of you actually meet.
- 3:14Speaker 3: We met through a mutual friend, So we went to
- 3:18Speaker 3: a friend's party and we just saw each other there.
- 3:23Speaker 3: So it kind of the old fashioned way.
- 3:24Speaker 2: What was the elopement, Like, was it romantic or was
- 3:27Speaker 2: it because you went to Santa Barbara for it? So
- 3:29Speaker 2: I'm imagining there was like some sort of scene it
- 3:32Speaker 2: wasn't just a go to the courthouse and sign some
- 3:34Speaker 2: papers situation.
- 3:36Speaker 3: Yeah, well, we kind of made it so. I didn't
- 3:39Speaker 3: want to wear a white dress at all. I wanted
- 3:40Speaker 3: to save that for our bigger wedding, but just our
- 3:44Speaker 3: immediate family and we dressed up and we did a
- 3:46Speaker 3: dinner together. It's a really nice dinner, and we all
- 3:49Speaker 3: went to the courthouse and it was out in the
- 3:52Speaker 3: front of the courthouse and so it was outside and
- 3:55Speaker 3: we just did it on the lawn there and it
- 3:56Speaker 3: was really sweet, really intimate, and yeah, it was nice
- 4:00Speaker 3: to have just our close family there. And then we
- 4:04Speaker 3: stayed the night in a hotel and it was really Yeah,
- 4:06Speaker 3: it was really cute. It was really special.
- 4:08Speaker 4: What has the reaction been, because I'm assuming not all
- 4:11Speaker 4: of your friends knew that you had gotten married, but
- 4:14Speaker 4: I'm assuming some did. Kind of tell us the reaction
- 4:18Speaker 4: from both parties, Like the ones that did know you
- 4:20Speaker 4: got married, were they, you know, how did they feel
- 4:22Speaker 4: about it? And then those who have just found out
- 4:24Speaker 4: that you've been married for a year and a half,
- 4:26Speaker 4: what was their reaction.
- 4:28Speaker 3: I'm not really that good at keeping secrets, so my
- 4:31Speaker 3: immediate family knew, of course, and then our relatives and
- 4:34Speaker 3: friends did know, so like all of my close friends knew,
- 4:39Speaker 3: really close friends knew. And also I've been kind of
- 4:41Speaker 3: living a double life in Germany because I literally can't
- 4:45Speaker 3: help but tell people in Germany. So that's part of
- 4:47Speaker 3: the reason why it's been so weird is because I
- 4:49Speaker 3: feel like we've been married for like over a year
- 4:52Speaker 3: and a half now and I've been acting like that.
- 4:55Speaker 3: And another part of the reason why we wanted to
- 4:58Speaker 3: go public with it now is because we've been in
- 5:00Speaker 3: talks about wanting to move back, wanting to start a family,
- 5:03Speaker 3: really excited for that, and I felt like moving back,
- 5:08Speaker 3: I wouldn't be able to kind of keep up that
- 5:10Speaker 3: we're not married things. I'm really bad at lying, So
- 5:12Speaker 3: I just wanted to kind of start our life together
- 5:17Speaker 3: and act like a married couple when we were back
- 5:20Speaker 3: in America as well. So yeah, that's another reason why
- 5:24Speaker 3: we decided to go public right now.
- 5:27Speaker 2: How has the distance thing been from your family, because
- 5:29Speaker 2: we knew that, you know, on Bachelor in Paradise and
- 5:32Speaker 2: with Joe, the whole I'm not moving thing play at
- 5:36Speaker 2: a big factor in that relationship, and you didn't want
- 5:39Speaker 2: to be away from your sister, which I totally get.
- 5:42Speaker 2: So now you're half a world away. How has it been.
- 5:47Speaker 3: It's been really really hard. But Mitch and I knew
- 5:51Speaker 3: when we decided to move to Germany that it was
- 5:53Speaker 3: going to be a temporary thing. So yeah, that's comforting
- 5:57Speaker 3: that we were going to be here for two years
- 5:59Speaker 3: having amazing adventure traveling and being able to experience a
- 6:04Speaker 3: life abroad. And we've really learned a lot and evolved
- 6:07Speaker 3: a lot in our relationship. I've just one hundred percent
- 6:11Speaker 3: just like depended on him for so much. It's been
- 6:15Speaker 3: really cool to start our marriage out that way. But
- 6:18Speaker 3: it's been there's been days where it's been really really hard. Like,
- 6:22Speaker 3: my sister is my absolute best friend. I'm extremely close
- 6:24Speaker 3: to my family, so so yeah, it's I mean, as
- 6:28Speaker 3: fun as it's been, that's been the hardest thing for
- 6:31Speaker 3: both of us not be close to our families. So
- 6:34Speaker 3: we've had to depend a lot on each other through that.
- 6:36Speaker 2: You see originally from the LA area as well.
- 6:39Speaker 3: He's originally from well, from Virginia and then moved to
- 6:45Speaker 3: I think Los Angeles area or in California, and then
- 6:50Speaker 3: kind of moved around California.
- 6:51Speaker 4: From there, so I mean you just kind of touched
- 6:55Speaker 4: on it, but you said it's been really impactful for
- 6:58Speaker 4: your marriage to art out abroad and to do this
- 7:02Speaker 4: now for I mean, how long have you been over there?
- 7:05Speaker 3: I think probably well, yeah, like a year and a half,
- 7:07Speaker 3: a little over a year and a.
- 7:08Speaker 4: Half, year and a half. So how has it, I mean,
- 7:12Speaker 4: if you can kind of give us some details, what
- 7:14Speaker 4: has it done for your relationship and your marriage, you know,
- 7:17Speaker 4: getting married, traveling abroad and just having each other good parts,
- 7:22Speaker 4: bad parts, all parts.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, you have to completely change your life
- 7:28Speaker 3: in a lot of ways. There's a new language, new places.
- 7:32Speaker 3: You don't really have any friends initially starting off. And
- 7:37Speaker 3: I'm a big social person, a big family person, Like
- 7:39Speaker 3: I talk to my family on the phone every single day,
- 7:41Speaker 3: and I usually would hang out with my sister every
- 7:43Speaker 3: single day or friends, So socially, I feel like I've
- 7:48Speaker 3: depended a lot, like with Misch for like company and
- 7:51Speaker 3: just kind of like all of that. So in that way,
- 7:55Speaker 3: we've just been able to get really really close and
- 8:00Speaker 3: and there's been difficult days when I miss everybody. Just
- 8:02Speaker 3: being able to be there and be strong for each other,
- 8:05Speaker 3: it's been really important. But Yeah, I mean it's just
- 8:09Speaker 3: a it's a lot, it's a lot to change, and
- 8:12Speaker 3: I would one hundred percent recommend it to everybody if
- 8:15Speaker 3: you want to go and have an adventure traveling, you know,
- 8:18Speaker 3: around the world. It's there's a lot to celebrate about it.
- 8:21Speaker 3: But even like small mundane tasks like making doctor's appointments
- 8:25Speaker 3: or going to the grocery store, I have to use
- 8:28Speaker 3: my broken German to get things done. I've had the
- 8:32Speaker 3: phone hung up on me when people realize that I
- 8:34Speaker 3: speak English and they don't know how to speak English. Yeah,
- 8:38Speaker 3: and there's you know, those are kind of funny things
- 8:40Speaker 3: about moving to a country where English isn't the first language,
- 8:44Speaker 3: and you kind of have to expect that in some
- 8:47Speaker 3: ways because in America, I'm sure we're very much like that,
- 8:50Speaker 3: even more so. But but yeah, it's like everything is
- 8:53Speaker 3: a little bit harder. So there's a lot of patience
- 8:57Speaker 3: that's involved in that.
- 8:58Speaker 2: And would you would you say that like, because you're
- 9:02Speaker 2: starting out with a challenge, you think it'll be like
- 9:06Speaker 2: you think it's gonna make your marriage stronger. And do
- 9:08Speaker 2: you think that like when you go back to the States,
- 9:11Speaker 2: everything will feel easy.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Well, you know, in a weird way, like it's felt
- 9:15Speaker 3: easy already here, Like sometimes how easy it feels just
- 9:23Speaker 3: with each other, and so moving back to the States,
- 9:26Speaker 3: I feel like I'm not even worried about it at all.
- 9:31Speaker 3: It's just yeah, I mean, I think we just take
- 9:33Speaker 3: everything one day at a time, and if there's hard days,
- 9:37Speaker 3: there's hard days, and we support each other. And it's
- 9:40Speaker 3: really hasn't despite missing people, it hasn't been too tremendously hard.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Well, I think it's my advice, and I don't have
- 9:51Speaker 4: a lot of advice in my life, but my advice
- 9:52Speaker 4: for any newly married couple is to at least move
- 9:56Speaker 4: away somewhere together, like to just do it, even for
- 9:59Speaker 4: a year. I think think that the struggle but also
- 10:02Speaker 4: just the ability to lean on each other really helps,
- 10:04Speaker 4: you know, build a bond. One thing I do, though,
- 10:07Speaker 4: think would be hard, would be, you know, you left
- 10:11Speaker 4: your profession and kind of you probably left a lot
- 10:14Speaker 4: of the projects and things you were working on back
- 10:16Speaker 4: here in the United States. So what does you know
- 10:19Speaker 4: your life look like in Germany? And do you have
- 10:22Speaker 4: anything you're working on while you're over there.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Well, in a weird way, I feel like it's actually
- 10:27Speaker 3: really helped focus what I want to do back in LA.
- 10:32Speaker 3: The only difference is really I just don't go to events.
- 10:35Speaker 3: I don't go to I guess premieres or stuff like
- 10:38Speaker 3: that anymore, which is okay with me. I more so
- 10:42Speaker 3: actually focus on like the nature and science elements of
- 10:47Speaker 3: what I'm doing with my career now. So I work
- 10:49Speaker 3: with the nature Kunta Museum in Stuttgart. It's a natural
- 10:53Speaker 3: history of museum, and so I've been working on videos
- 10:57Speaker 3: with them and just kind of like talking to different
- 11:00Speaker 3: tax or myths and different biologists and that's been really amazing.
- 11:06Speaker 3: And I still have partnerships with other companies like along
- 11:09Speaker 3: those same lines. I've actually been able to travel from
- 11:12Speaker 3: here a lot easier, so I've gone to Africa a
- 11:15Speaker 3: few times to do things with net Geo and different projects.
- 11:21Speaker 3: So I feel like, in a way, I haven't really
- 11:24Speaker 3: left behind what I do. I've only kind of done
- 11:26Speaker 3: more of what I want to do.
- 11:27Speaker 2: That's awesome. We're so happy for you. I guess we
- 11:41Speaker 2: have to bring up your bachelor and paradise your bachelor experience. Yeah,
- 11:45Speaker 2: I think it's like so, I think it's like so
- 11:48Speaker 2: cool that everything just worked out for you. And for Joe,
- 11:52Speaker 2: because the last time we saw you on TV was
- 11:55Speaker 2: you like going back to Bachelor in Paradise seeing if
- 11:58Speaker 2: you guys could possibly rekindle things if it was like
- 12:01Speaker 2: really really over, and then you soon after Mett Mitch,
- 12:06Speaker 2: and then like I'm assuming that you were just like,
- 12:09Speaker 2: oh wow, this is why everything didn't work out.
- 12:12Speaker 3: Right, right, Yeah, I mean the whole Paradise thing. Of course,
- 12:16Speaker 3: I have a lot of opinions about how that all
- 12:18Speaker 3: transpired and don't necessarily agree with everything. Yeah, definitely didn't
- 12:25Speaker 3: go there to date my ex again. But despite that,
- 12:28Speaker 3: it's all.
- 12:29Speaker 2: Yeah, despite that, that's what it looked like.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, No, it is so crazy. I'm just
- 12:35Speaker 3: really happy that life has kind of turned out the
- 12:38Speaker 3: way that I did. I feel like, I feel like
- 12:41Speaker 3: Joe and Streen are happy together, married together, and it
- 12:45Speaker 3: just feels almost kind of like a world away from
- 12:47Speaker 3: all of that, and it's so weird to now kind
- 12:52Speaker 3: of be married and moving forward, and I don't know,
- 12:56Speaker 3: it almost feels like it's weird that I was even
- 12:58Speaker 3: like a part of my past, you know, the Bachelor
- 13:01Speaker 3: and all of that, because in Germany, no one watches
- 13:03Speaker 3: The Bachelor, No one knows who I am, you know,
- 13:05Speaker 3: despite maybe some Americans on base or some of my
- 13:08Speaker 3: American friends. But it's been so nice, just kind of
- 13:13Speaker 3: I don't know, it's being separate from everything. And I
- 13:16Speaker 3: almost got reminded when I went back to America recently
- 13:18Speaker 3: about the whole Bachelor world. I'm like, oh, people like
- 13:22Speaker 3: still recognize me, and like, I feel like I've haven't
- 13:24Speaker 3: been a part of everything for such a long time,
- 13:27Speaker 3: so I'm still like surprised. But yeah, it's just yeah.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Here in Germany, I feel like it's you know, not
- 13:35Speaker 3: really been a thing.
- 13:36Speaker 4: So it's healthy. I'm assuming it's very healthy to to
- 13:40Speaker 4: get away and to not have that you know, kind
- 13:43Speaker 4: of cloud or that you know, that attention on you.
- 13:48Speaker 4: It kind of helps you reset, which yeah, would be
- 13:51Speaker 4: you know, fabulous for so many and probably necessary.
- 13:54Speaker 3: Now.
- 13:55Speaker 4: In closing here, you've mentioned that your plans are to
- 13:59Speaker 4: move back to units eight together. Obviously, what do those
- 14:03Speaker 4: plans look like? Where would you probably be moving, what
- 14:06Speaker 4: kind of you know, careers would you both be entering into,
- 14:08Speaker 4: And I guess would Mitch be staying in the current
- 14:11Speaker 4: career is in Yeah, so.
- 14:13Speaker 3: He'll be in the same career but probably staying within
- 14:17Speaker 3: the company or moving with a different company. We're still
- 14:19Speaker 3: kind of talking about that, but yeah, the plan initially
- 14:23Speaker 3: is to just because it was such a crazy transition
- 14:27Speaker 3: going from America to Germany, we kind of anticipate that's
- 14:31Speaker 3: going to be just as crazy going from Germany to America,
- 14:33Speaker 3: if not more so difficult because you have to you know,
- 14:36Speaker 3: get your license, you have to I have to learn
- 14:38Speaker 3: to drive again, so I've been driven in such a
- 14:40Speaker 3: long time. Everything. So we're planning to stay with Mitch's
- 14:45Speaker 3: family for a little bit while we get all that
- 14:48Speaker 3: figured out, and then our plan is to There's a
- 14:51Speaker 3: couple different places we're thinking of moving, but potentially San Diego,
- 14:54Speaker 3: potentially maybe staying in like a Ventura area, somewhere along
- 14:59Speaker 3: the beach. I've miss the beach so much since being away,
- 15:01Speaker 3: so that's our ultimate goal. But yeah, in California is
- 15:06Speaker 3: where we're thinking of moving to.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Can I just say that it's just so perfect for
- 15:11Speaker 2: your personality and interest to be with an aerospace engineer,
- 15:16Speaker 2: like we would expect nothing less.
- 15:18Speaker 3: Right, That's like how we really connected in the beginning.
- 15:20Speaker 3: As we were talking about which is like a planet
- 15:24Speaker 3: or moon that could potentially harbor alien life. That was
- 15:27Speaker 3: like something that we I was like, oh man, we
- 15:29Speaker 3: both like space. So yeah, there's definitely a lot of
- 15:32Speaker 3: very interesting conversations that we have about things. But yeah,
- 15:36Speaker 3: it is I feel like it's pretty fitting.
- 15:39Speaker 2: That is so cool. All right, Well, my last question
- 15:41Speaker 2: for you is will you ever wear the white dress?
- 15:44Speaker 2: Are you going to have any sort of celebration.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, we're definitely going to. I think that doing
- 15:50Speaker 3: it closer to home is what our goal is now,
- 15:52Speaker 3: just to make sure that all of our family can
- 15:54Speaker 3: be a part of that. And a broad wedding is
- 15:56Speaker 3: really expensive for all the guests. I mean, it may
- 15:59Speaker 3: have been with us, but but yeah, so I think
- 16:03Speaker 3: we definitely want to celebrate it in some way back
- 16:06Speaker 3: in America.
- 16:08Speaker 4: You deserve to be celebrated, Kendall, and so does Mitch.
- 16:11Speaker 4: The two of you have you know, accomplished a lot, uh,
- 16:17Speaker 4: just moving to Germany and doing what you're doing, and uh,
- 16:19Speaker 4: and we're really thankful that you came on and shared
- 16:21Speaker 4: with us the story. We were all very excited here,
- 16:25Speaker 4: but we didn't know the details. And so thanks for
- 16:27Speaker 4: sharing the details of your relationship and the elopement and
- 16:30Speaker 4: then the future plans for the two of you.
- 16:33Speaker 3: No, of course, I'm happy to catch up.
- 16:35Speaker 2: All right, we'll see you, Kendall. Thank you so much
- 16:37Speaker 2: for coming on Yeah by
