- 9:50Speaker 1: Com On, SPORTSTOCK i visit with Author Luke epplin about
- 9:54Speaker 1: his new, Book moses and The doctor.
- 9:56Speaker 5: That Julius irving thought about himself as an, artist thought
- 10:00Speaker 5: about what he was doing in terms of there are
- 10:03Speaker 5: ways that basketball can be more, beautiful that there are
- 10:06Speaker 5: ways of basketball can be more. Exciting and so he
- 10:08Speaker 5: was on the playground doing these up and under, moves
- 10:11Speaker 5: these creative, dunks thinking about how he can incorporate them
- 10:15Speaker 5: into his arsenal basically.
- 10:17Speaker 1: Sports, talk, poetry, emotion week days from four to six
- 10:20Speaker 1: on The.
- 10:21Speaker 6: Zone i'm tired of.
- 10:41Speaker 7: This city in, time too much work and the enough play.
- 10:56Speaker 1: Well we wait to Say Garth, brooks with his one
- 10:59Speaker 1: man SHOW A lot Of vegas several years, ago he
- 11:02Speaker 1: talked about the musical influences from his household from his.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Father his, father he said there were two musicians period
- 11:13Speaker 1: and he'd held up his right. Forearm he goes that Were,
- 11:16Speaker 1: jones and he'd held up his left forearm as a. Cross.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Haggard that's, It, Jones. Haggard those were the two MUSICIANS
- 11:25Speaker 1: i grew up. With, well that's What i'm right there
- 11:28Speaker 1: in the late Great Merle. Haggard, Okay aggie's going to Baton.
- 11:35Speaker 1: ROUGE i think they're already in the. TOURNAMENT i think
- 11:37Speaker 1: they made the tournament when they Beat. Kentucky but we've
- 11:42Speaker 1: seen this. Before you don't want to give the committee an. Excuse,
- 11:47Speaker 1: ever you don't want to give an, Excuse so go
- 11:51Speaker 1: To Baton, rouge BEAT, lsu solidify, it and then you
- 11:55Speaker 1: don't care what. Happens, WELL i don't care what happens
- 11:58Speaker 1: at the conference tournament in any. Way but then if
- 12:04Speaker 1: something weird happened you LOST, lsu you got to go
- 12:07Speaker 1: in and, go you know, what we better win a
- 12:08Speaker 1: game at the conference tournament just to let people. Know,
- 12:13Speaker 1: right you don't want to do, That just go BEAT.
- 12:16Speaker 1: Lsu bucky spoke to the media about three hours, ago
- 12:21Speaker 1: and it sounded a little like, this do you.
- 12:24Speaker 8: Look AT i was actually still In tony's, Question but
- 12:27Speaker 8: you're you look at the way y'all played Against kentucky
- 12:30Speaker 8: and look at that and, say, man you know we
- 12:33Speaker 8: played to our. Abilities can this be a Spring you
- 12:37Speaker 8: think they could be a springboard and you continue that
- 12:41Speaker 8: or do you just look at it, like, hey you know,
- 12:42Speaker 8: what everything's a roll with.
- 12:44Speaker 9: FAST i mean there's good and bad in every. GAME
- 12:47Speaker 9: i did think that some of our players ARE i
- 12:51Speaker 9: think some of our guards really played in that game
- 12:55Speaker 9: and took the game the way that you got to
- 12:57Speaker 9: take it this time of, year like we're going to
- 13:00Speaker 9: the game, plan we're gonna do all, that but we've
- 13:03Speaker 9: got to have our guards In march really play. Well
- 13:06Speaker 9: and SO i think more than, anything our guards took
- 13:08Speaker 9: away from, that, like if you guys don't step it
- 13:11Speaker 9: up and, hoop it's gonna be hard to win in
- 13:14Speaker 9: this league or In. March and so you can't play
- 13:18Speaker 9: to go out there and not. Lose you got to
- 13:20Speaker 9: go play to win and make. Plays and if we
- 13:23Speaker 9: miss we get off thirty threes and we make five of,
- 13:27Speaker 9: THEM i can live with that more than getting off
- 13:28Speaker 9: twelve threes or something like. That and we need guys
- 13:31Speaker 9: Like rylin And reuben trying to hunt shots And pop
- 13:34Speaker 9: and those guys And. Zach we need them hunting shots
- 13:37Speaker 9: right now this time of, year AND i think that
- 13:40Speaker 9: makes us the best version of ourselves because we are
- 13:41Speaker 9: a three point shooting team.
- 13:44Speaker 10: Now that he had a chance to go back and
- 13:46Speaker 10: look at it and talked, about you, know trying to
- 13:49Speaker 10: get guys going by bringing some of them off the,
- 13:51Speaker 10: bench maybe just what were maybe some of the biggest
- 13:54Speaker 10: benefits you saw in some of the ways those guys,
- 13:56Speaker 10: played and to anticipate maybe keeping that lineup On.
- 13:59Speaker 9: Saturday, YEAH i, Mean i'd rather have guys playing like
- 14:04Speaker 9: angry in some, way and if they can't do it,
- 14:07Speaker 9: Themselves i'll make them angry at, me like they got
- 14:10Speaker 9: something to. Prove and AND i don't Know i've thought About.
- 14:12Speaker 9: Saturday i've never been a big starter guy like who
- 14:15Speaker 9: starts really doesn't matter the minutes kind of shake out
- 14:17Speaker 9: how they. Do BUT i just know we got to
- 14:21Speaker 9: do whatever to make sure that our, guys LIKE i,
- 14:23Speaker 9: mentioned because it's going to be a lot about those
- 14:25Speaker 9: players in particularly those, guards on the right mindset to
- 14:29Speaker 9: attack and play to go get it instead of, Playing,
- 14:31Speaker 9: hey this game's just gonna find. Me, now you got
- 14:34Speaker 9: to go hunt the, game and you got to go
- 14:35Speaker 9: hunt your your, shots and you got to go being attack.
- 14:37Speaker 9: Mode so whatever it calls, FOR i feel like before
- 14:40Speaker 9: that game to get them railed up, mentally we'll just
- 14:42Speaker 9: roll with.
- 14:43Speaker 8: That is there any advantage or extra feelam confidence having
- 14:47Speaker 8: nomed you've already BEATEN.
- 14:49Speaker 9: LSU i don't. KNOW i like the game plan becomes you,
- 14:55Speaker 9: know you, know the game plan is easier for me
- 14:58Speaker 9: because you know what they. Do BUT i mean, it's,
- 15:03Speaker 9: uh it's still a road. Game we know that it's.
- 15:05Speaker 9: Difficult they were still is a one point game here
- 15:08Speaker 9: under two. Minutes they're as good as anybody when they're playing.
- 15:10Speaker 9: Well they've been in a lot of, these about every
- 15:13Speaker 9: single one of these, games and they remember one here
- 15:15Speaker 9: and that could have gone either. Way they you, know
- 15:18Speaker 9: when they're playing, good they're. Good they got, side they
- 15:20Speaker 9: got shooting, there they're they're well, coached they run good.
- 15:23Speaker 9: Sets but you, know road games and road. GAMES i,
- 15:27Speaker 9: mean they may just dropped, recently but they called a
- 15:31Speaker 9: quad one game for a. REASON a lot of times
- 15:33Speaker 9: they're tough to, get so it'll be a tough.
- 15:35Speaker 10: One well played them the first TIME i think they
- 15:37Speaker 10: played without their best Guard. Thomas you notice anything different
- 15:42Speaker 10: with him in the lineup and just kind of what
- 15:43Speaker 10: he brings to the.
- 15:44Speaker 9: Table he's still the point guard still. Out, yeah, YEAH
- 15:48Speaker 9: i don't know that you'll Have, YEAH i mean you never.
- 15:55Speaker 9: Know me worried give another counting. Report, YEAH i like,
- 15:59Speaker 9: them BUT i put to answer your, QUESTION i like
- 16:01Speaker 9: playing them with him out of the.
- 16:02Speaker 11: Lineup.
- 16:03Speaker 12: Sure so obviously STARTED sec playing WITH, lsu closing it
- 16:07Speaker 12: out here WITH. Lsu what have you learned about your
- 16:10Speaker 12: team from game one to this last?
- 16:11Speaker 9: Game you know in THE sec you got to be
- 16:14Speaker 9: resilient because it's a. GAUNTLET i, mean we're going in
- 16:16Speaker 9: the last deal here trying to earn a top five,
- 16:19Speaker 9: seed and we got it right in front of us
- 16:20Speaker 9: to play, well and you have that. Opportunity but nobody
- 16:26Speaker 9: see this is the thing that you, Know i've not
- 16:30Speaker 9: mentioned any specific, team but someone mentioned this other day
- 16:32Speaker 9: and they caught so much stuff for. It like you
- 16:36Speaker 9: could take a lot of these good mid major teams
- 16:38Speaker 9: that may have had a good, season would you throw
- 16:40Speaker 9: them into THE. Sec it's not a one game deal
- 16:43Speaker 9: that some one can't play well. In it's Just saturday
- 16:47Speaker 9: was a freaking war. On by the, Way now On,
- 16:49Speaker 9: wednesday you got to play these. Monsters, oh by the,
- 16:51Speaker 9: way now you got to travel here and play these Monsters.
- 16:54Speaker 9: Saturday oh, YEAH i know that you beat. Up you
- 16:57Speaker 9: got to get in the training room because guess what's happening.
- 16:59Speaker 9: Here we got to travel back. Here then we're going
- 17:01Speaker 9: to travel to here and play these. Monsters so you
- 17:04Speaker 9: really have to be. Resilient it's almost impossible to be
- 17:07Speaker 9: on a full battery every, night even if you try
- 17:10Speaker 9: to do everything, right and it's just the duration of.
- 17:13Speaker 9: It And i've learned that our guys to put themselves
- 17:15Speaker 9: in a position to finish in the top five of the,
- 17:17Speaker 9: league you got to be pretty dang. Resilient you got
- 17:19Speaker 9: to be pretty, tough and you got to have, depth
- 17:22Speaker 9: BECAUSE i think the strength of our team has been
- 17:24Speaker 9: we hadn't been married to a certain five every. Night
- 17:27Speaker 9: we just hadn't done. That whoever's got to, going we're
- 17:29Speaker 9: gonna rally behind, that and it's put us in a good. Position,
- 17:34Speaker 9: yeah to that.
- 17:34Speaker 12: Point, obviously you guys have played in high intensity, games
- 17:38Speaker 12: games that really mean. More but as you, know the
- 17:40Speaker 12: hits march, here every game cranks up in. Intensity do
- 17:43Speaker 12: you feel like your team understands or is ready, for you,
- 17:46Speaker 12: know the ever revolving games and how much they mean
- 17:50Speaker 12: and it's winter go home.
- 17:51Speaker 9: Here, YEAH i. DO i think that particularly and you
- 17:54Speaker 9: get the tournament tom, in particularly when you get outside
- 17:59Speaker 9: of THE sec and you're playing teams for the first,
- 18:01Speaker 9: time and a lot of times if you can get
- 18:03Speaker 9: through the first round of A ncha, game you know
- 18:05Speaker 9: you're playing teams on one day. Prep AND i also
- 18:08Speaker 9: believe that when you get to tournament, time everybody is
- 18:13Speaker 9: comfortable trying to run their. Stuff that's what they want to.
- 18:16Speaker 9: Do there's sometimes in the year by just kind of loosey,
- 18:18Speaker 9: goosey but when it comes to tournament time and your
- 18:21Speaker 9: life's on the, line everybody wants to run what they
- 18:23Speaker 9: do the most of in. Practice and we have a
- 18:26Speaker 9: team and the way that we play like we're going
- 18:29Speaker 9: to try to get you out of your comfort. Zone
- 18:30Speaker 9: we just can't run your stuff over and over and
- 18:33Speaker 9: we play an attacking style and when your life's on the,
- 18:35Speaker 9: line that's that's a great way to. Play and if
- 18:39Speaker 9: you look at a lot of these teams that make
- 18:40Speaker 9: tournament runs and hold some, upsets they probably play a
- 18:43Speaker 9: little bit. Different they're capable from the three point line
- 18:46Speaker 9: and they play an attacking. Style you look out there
- 18:49Speaker 9: and you're, like hey, man those dudes are playing to,
- 18:50Speaker 9: win AND i think we have that with our. Team,
- 18:53Speaker 9: WELL i Know.
- 18:54Speaker 10: Chikara didn't play On, tuesday but just what have you
- 18:56Speaker 10: seen from him the last couple of.
- 18:57Speaker 9: Days, Yeah car is a team. Guy like you, Know
- 18:59Speaker 9: car happy because we won and next game and maybe
- 19:04Speaker 9: his night maybe someone else's, night and it's. Not if
- 19:06Speaker 9: it's someone else's night and This car is, night then
- 19:10Speaker 9: everybody should be happy as long as we're. Playing, well
- 19:13Speaker 9: that's what being a veteran is. About, like sometimes it's your,
- 19:16Speaker 9: game sometimes it's not your. GAME i want to go.
- 19:20Speaker 1: Back OH i want to go. BACK i forget what
- 19:22Speaker 1: game it.
- 19:23Speaker 13: Was but when you'll have to use your two challenges
- 19:25Speaker 13: in like the first five, Minutes, yeah how do you
- 19:28Speaker 13: balance something like that where you know that first possession
- 19:31Speaker 13: could be just as critical as a possession in the
- 19:33Speaker 13: last five, minutes but knowing that even if you win
- 19:36Speaker 13: that second, challenge you're not going to have. One and
- 19:38Speaker 13: do you think that's maybe a rule change that'll be
- 19:40Speaker 13: discussed sometime in the.
- 19:41Speaker 9: Offseason, YEAH i don't know what they'll do with the.
- 19:44Speaker 9: RULES i do think that, analytically they say you're supposed
- 19:48Speaker 9: to to challenge if you if you're gonna win, it
- 19:50Speaker 9: right that's what they. Say you don't worry about saving
- 19:52Speaker 9: it because you don't know if it's gonna come to
- 19:54Speaker 9: fruition right. There so if we if we think we're
- 19:56Speaker 9: gonna win the, challenge we're gonna go ahead and do.
- 19:58Speaker 9: It if we we know we're gonna win it, early
- 20:01Speaker 9: like like the one last, game we were, LIKE i don't,
- 20:03Speaker 9: know but you, know we have timeouts to. BURN i
- 20:05Speaker 9: probably want to use our second challenge on that. One
- 20:07Speaker 9: we d end up winning. It we got to get
- 20:10Speaker 9: better at. THOUGH i will say, This i've been on our.
- 20:11Speaker 9: Guys it's finding some hooking. Holes there was there's a
- 20:14Speaker 9: couple we missed that we could have found and you,
- 20:18Speaker 9: know which is kind of a different situation of, itself
- 20:21Speaker 9: but we got to get better at finding those because
- 20:23Speaker 9: if you saw them of the Old miss, game like
- 20:24Speaker 9: there's like three or four, caught it changed the out
- 20:26Speaker 9: come of the. Game it's probably that game was probably
- 20:29Speaker 9: one by let's see Ole miss was. Playing who was it? Was,
- 20:33Speaker 9: uh who they beat last. Game that Was, Yeah Old
- 20:39Speaker 9: miss lost To, vandy But vandy probably won that game
- 20:42Speaker 9: because some ga behind the bench finds some finds a
- 20:45Speaker 9: hooking hole that they're able to, get you, know free
- 20:48Speaker 9: throws out of send the game to. Overtime so it's.
- 20:51Speaker 9: Funny that's the nature of college basketball right. Now BUT
- 20:54Speaker 9: i can promise you that people gonna find it on.
- 20:56Speaker 9: Us we got to find it on.
- 20:57Speaker 1: Them it is amazing to see all these iPads on the.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Bench first of, all it's amazing you see like fifteen,
- 21:05Speaker 1: coaches you, know with two rows of coaches on the.
- 21:07Speaker 1: Bench i'm old enough to remember there was a head
- 21:11Speaker 1: coach and assistant, coach and if it was a really
- 21:14Speaker 1: good basketball, program there may be two assistant. Coaches and
- 21:17Speaker 1: now there's like twenty and they all have pads and
- 21:21Speaker 1: they're all looking at Each i'm sure each person has
- 21:25Speaker 1: a responsibility to. Determine, okay maybe it's for each player,
- 21:31Speaker 1: actually but in terms of do you challenge this do
- 21:35Speaker 1: you not challenge? IT i never did understand challenging in
- 21:40Speaker 1: the first five. MINUTES i, Mean bucky JUST i just.
- 21:42Speaker 1: DON'T i don't understand making a challenge in the first
- 21:45Speaker 1: five minutes of the, game when you might lose that
- 21:48Speaker 1: and not have another win the rest of the. GAME i,
- 21:52Speaker 1: mean that's just. Me i'm not a, coach BUT i
- 21:55Speaker 1: did stay at a holiday in last, night AND i would.
- 21:59Speaker 1: WAIT i would wait until a more critical. Time, yeah,
- 22:06Speaker 1: WELL i know what you. Say, well the first five
- 22:09Speaker 1: minutes is important as the last five. Minutes in some,
- 22:12Speaker 1: cases that could be. True in a lot of cases it's,
- 22:15Speaker 1: not especially if it's you, know fifteen fifteen with fifteen
- 22:21Speaker 1: minutes left in the first. Half i'm going to wait
- 22:24Speaker 1: unless it's just. Egregious if it's, EGREGIOUS i get. It
- 22:28Speaker 1: if it's, EASY i get. It but a lot of
- 22:31Speaker 1: these the players are, saying, oh you got a. Challenge
- 22:34Speaker 1: you've seen the. Players the players want to challenge everything
- 22:37Speaker 1: when it goes out of. Balance every time it's out of,
- 22:39Speaker 1: balance you've got. One are your players, going, yeah, YEAH
- 22:42Speaker 1: i was off in let's challenge. It and then you've
- 22:44Speaker 1: got everybody, looking all the assistant coaches looking on the,
- 22:48Speaker 1: bench you, know, Going i'm looking at The Arnold Palmer
- 22:53Speaker 1: they're playing In orlando, tournament and we covered that Told
- 23:00Speaker 1: trey and it's been probably twenty five. Years we were
- 23:08Speaker 1: down Covering astro spring training, baseball AND i GUESS i
- 23:15Speaker 1: didn't remember that the tournament was the WEEK i was.
- 23:19Speaker 1: There But i'm watching the news AND i, go, hey
- 23:22Speaker 1: the tournament's. Here so that morning we got up and
- 23:26Speaker 1: we send a. FAX i have somebody here send the
- 23:29Speaker 1: facts to the people at The Arnold palmer, said, HEY
- 23:32Speaker 1: i need two passes to cover the. Tournament and we
- 23:36Speaker 1: got our. Passes we go to the tournament and it
- 23:40Speaker 1: turned Out Arnold, palmer who is the, host also played
- 23:44Speaker 1: in the. Tournament that's how long ago it. Was he
- 23:47Speaker 1: was playing in his own, tournament and of course he
- 23:50Speaker 1: had done really. Well he, said this may be the,
- 23:51Speaker 1: last you, know REGULAR pga EVENT i play. IN i don't,
- 23:55Speaker 1: know but we got to talk to the king that.
- 23:59Speaker 1: Was that was pretty. COOL i gotta tell you that
- 24:03Speaker 1: was pretty. COOL i. Digress SO i saw this online.
- 24:11Speaker 1: Today we talked About Lou holtz yesterday and this is
- 24:20Speaker 1: one of His Lou holtz was an unbelievable motivational. Speaker
- 24:24Speaker 1: he made a lot of money after he retired speaking
- 24:29Speaker 1: this part of this. Speech and this is only, part
- 24:32Speaker 1: but it's it's at a. GRADUATION i don't know which.
- 24:36Speaker 1: GRADUATION i don't. Know you know the time of it,
- 24:42Speaker 1: relatively you, know looking at lou he was eighty nine
- 24:46Speaker 1: when he died, yesterday you, know probably within the last ten.
- 24:52Speaker 1: Years but he was just an incredible gifted speak, baker
- 25:01Speaker 1: and let's listen to. THIS i think you'll really enjoy.
- 25:06Speaker 14: It in my, MOUTH i was born with a silver
- 25:10Speaker 14: spoon in my. MOUTH i. KNOW i was born In,
- 25:13Speaker 14: Fallsby West, virginia AND i went by WHERE i was
- 25:18Speaker 14: born last, night about ten. THIRTY i was born in
- 25:24Speaker 14: a cellar at home delivered by doctor. McGraw we had
- 25:30Speaker 14: one bedroom for my, sister, myself and my. Parents we
- 25:35Speaker 14: had a half bath and a. Kitchen seven and a
- 25:39Speaker 14: half years we lived in that. Place there was no,
- 25:42Speaker 14: welfare there was no food, staffs there was no safety.
- 25:45Speaker 14: Net BUT i always had plenty of deed because every
- 25:49Speaker 14: TIME i asked for a, second my dad would, said,
- 25:51Speaker 14: no you had. Plenty but the REASON i was bored
- 25:56Speaker 14: with a silverspoon my dad had only gone to the third.
- 25:59Speaker 14: Grade that's all the education he. Had but why WAS
- 26:02Speaker 14: i bored with us overspoon in my? Mouth BECAUSE i
- 26:05Speaker 14: was taught by my parents the life's the matter of
- 26:08Speaker 14: making choices wherever you are good or batter because the
- 26:11Speaker 14: choices you make don't blame anybody. Else but if you
- 26:14Speaker 14: get an, education you're willing to work and overcome problems and.
- 26:17Speaker 14: Difficulties in this great, country you can amount to. Something
- 26:22Speaker 14: that's How that's WHY i bore a. SILVERSPOON i was
- 26:25Speaker 14: in this country AND i was taught personal responsibility for
- 26:28Speaker 14: choices you. Made when we talk about a, commitment, excellency
- 26:33Speaker 14: that's a choice you. Make what do you want to?
- 26:36Speaker 14: Do having hopes and dreams and. Ambition, SEE i think
- 26:41Speaker 14: that is absolutely. Critical don't make the mistake a. Maid
- 26:45Speaker 14: i've done a lot of dumb, things but let me
- 26:46Speaker 14: tell you one THING i. Regret we went to The
- 26:48Speaker 14: university Never. Dame we took a program on the, bottom
- 26:51Speaker 14: we took it to the very, top and for nine
- 26:53Speaker 14: straight years we went to A january one bowler's sugar,
- 26:56Speaker 14: cotton the origin of the. Feast and nobody's done it,
- 26:58Speaker 14: before nobody's it since we put it on top and
- 27:02Speaker 14: we maintained. It that's the THING i regressed the. Most,
- 27:06Speaker 14: say there's a rural life that did you're either growing
- 27:10Speaker 14: or you're. Dying the trees either growing or is. Dying soo's.
- 27:14Speaker 14: Grass those a, marriage soo's a, business so's a. Person
- 27:18Speaker 14: doesn't have a thing to do with. Age my birthday
- 27:20Speaker 14: candles cussed born a, cake but as every day to
- 27:24Speaker 14: do A i trying to get, better my trying to
- 27:26Speaker 14: prove we got on top and, say you know this pretty,
- 27:28Speaker 14: good let's maintain, It let's not take any. Risk we
- 27:32Speaker 14: for the second of the. Country At Notre, dame everybody
- 27:34Speaker 14: called me an. Idiot guy finished his last to medical.
- 27:37Speaker 14: School they call him. Doctor that doesn't seem. Fair WHEN
- 27:43Speaker 14: i Left Notre, DAME i never thought i'd coach. Again
- 27:46Speaker 14: where'd you go From Notre? Dame according to my, mother going,
- 27:48Speaker 14: directly haven't you sit by the? Pope you don't coach?
- 27:51Speaker 14: Anymore and THEN i went to live in a town
- 27:54Speaker 14: where the average age was. Deceased and WHAT i found?
- 27:59Speaker 14: Out you, know one time the coaches you have to
- 28:01Speaker 14: have something to hope for us up to dream and
- 28:05Speaker 14: even though you've done great things so, far what's going
- 28:08Speaker 14: to happen? NOW i want to give you a simple.
- 28:10Speaker 14: Plan life doesn't have to be. COMPLICATED i try to
- 28:15Speaker 14: keep life. Simple do you realize there are only Seven
- 28:18Speaker 14: killers of The, rainbow only. Seven look What michelangelo did
- 28:23Speaker 14: with those seven. Killers there's only seven musical. Notes look
- 28:29Speaker 14: What betobin did with those seven. Notes there's only ten.
- 28:33Speaker 14: Numbers look What Bernie madoff did with those ten. Numbers
- 28:40Speaker 14: the POINT i make is it doesn't have to be. Complicated,
- 28:44Speaker 14: see you need four things in your. Life if you
- 28:48Speaker 14: don't have any of these four things in your, life
- 28:50Speaker 14: you're gonna have a tremendous. Void, see everybody needs something to.
- 28:54Speaker 14: Do number, two everybody needs someone to. Love number, three
- 28:59Speaker 14: EVERY i need someone to believe. It in my Cases Jesus,
- 29:02Speaker 14: christ Our lord And. Savior but the fourth thing you
- 29:06Speaker 14: need your life is you need something to hope. For
- 29:10Speaker 14: there's never a right time to do the wrong, thing
- 29:13Speaker 14: and there's never a wrong time to do the right.
- 29:16Speaker 14: Thing just do what's. RIGHT i think it's right to
- 29:19Speaker 14: be honest right beyond. Time, teelane, gentlemen and joy, life have.
- 29:23Speaker 14: Fun you're gonna have. Problems you're gonna have, difficulties that's
- 29:26Speaker 14: part of. Life and don't tell people about your. Problems
- 29:31Speaker 14: do you know that ninety percent of the people don't
- 29:33Speaker 14: care and the other ten percent are glad you got,
- 29:39Speaker 14: them so you're better off keeping yours. Up you're gonna have,
- 29:44Speaker 14: problems but have fun with what you're. Doing people ain't
- 29:47Speaker 14: a jeff funding THE, espn not, really because if you
- 29:50Speaker 14: have fun being, there people have fun being. Around doesn't
- 29:54Speaker 14: MEAN i don't do dumb, things and Sometimes i'm. WANTED
- 29:57Speaker 14: i wantest everything to the best of your ability with.
- 30:04Speaker 14: TIME a lot of you, know ladies and. Gentlemen not
- 30:07Speaker 14: all of us be All, america not everybody be first.
- 30:10Speaker 14: Team everybody can be the best you're capable of. Being
- 30:15Speaker 14: AND i want to tell, you if you want to,
- 30:17Speaker 14: fail you have the right to. Fail that's what's great
- 30:19Speaker 14: about this. Country you do not have the right to
- 30:22Speaker 14: cause other people to fail because you don't do everything
- 30:25Speaker 14: best your. Ability when you join a, spouse you bring
- 30:28Speaker 14: a child in the, world you join a, business you
- 30:31Speaker 14: join a, team you have, obligation, responsibilities and you owe
- 30:35Speaker 14: it to other people to do the maximum you can
- 30:38Speaker 14: at each everything you, do it's not complicated and the
- 30:44Speaker 14: last rule to show people your. Care and you walk
- 30:48Speaker 14: in the, room drive You hey HERE i am looking at?
- 30:50Speaker 14: Me an't no? Dratude there you? Are how CAN i help?
- 30:53Speaker 14: YOU i WISH i knew those three rules when that's twenty,
- 30:56Speaker 14: One i've used them for the last forty years as a.
- 30:59Speaker 14: Statue be it notre. DAME i guess they needed a
- 31:02Speaker 14: place for the pigeons to. Land but if you go
- 31:05Speaker 14: look at, it just don't look to look at three
- 31:08Speaker 14: words on the, pedestal, trust, commitment, love.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Wowsers that is that's so. PHENOMENAL i, mean he was
- 31:18Speaker 1: so gifted as a. Speaker and you know what's been,
- 31:26Speaker 1: interesting except for the mentally Challenged Keith, oberman there has
- 31:31Speaker 1: been not one wrong bad words said About Lou. Holtz
- 31:37Speaker 1: everybody has talked about the impact that he. Made he
- 31:42Speaker 1: as we mentioned yesterday When scott was, HERE i had

- 35:40Speaker 20: and today we're jumping out to The Playis Fund center
- 35:42Speaker 20: phone line to visit with the head coach of the
- 35:45Speaker 20: enormous G panthers baseball, team Mister robert. Mcconnathy, Coach thanks
- 35:49Speaker 20: for joining, me.
- 35:50Speaker 11: Not a, Problem thanks for having.
- 35:52Speaker 20: Me, yes, Sir Your panthers off to a hot start this,
- 35:55Speaker 20: year only one loss so far and won your last
- 35:58Speaker 20: six in a. Row so what have been some of
- 36:00Speaker 20: your takeaways from these first few tournaments and.
- 36:03Speaker 11: Games some of our sophomores are now. Juniors they have
- 36:07Speaker 11: the experience and they're building off the success that they
- 36:12Speaker 11: had last, year and it's playing off so.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Far.
- 36:15Speaker 11: Got we've got a pretty tough, district so it's gonna
- 36:18Speaker 11: be important that we keep this.
- 36:20Speaker 20: Going so you've got a lot of players back from last,
- 36:23Speaker 20: SEASON i, noticed and you, know pretty junior and senior
- 36:25Speaker 20: heavy this. Year so how important has that experience been
- 36:28Speaker 20: early in the. Season to have those players that have
- 36:30Speaker 20: been through this so many times, Already.
- 36:32Speaker 19: Yes.
- 36:34Speaker 11: Got, uh and we we still only have we only
- 36:37Speaker 11: have two. Seniors we're only gonna miss two seniors after
- 36:40Speaker 11: the season finishes. Up and so took a chance when
- 36:45Speaker 11: these guys were. Young they've got a lot of games
- 36:48Speaker 11: under their belt and, uh hopefully they can keep playing good.
- 36:52Speaker 20: Baseball so last year solid season for The. Panthers you,
- 36:55Speaker 20: know fourth place in the, district went to the area
- 36:58Speaker 20: around after Beating douglass in the by. District so how
- 37:02Speaker 20: do you plan to build on that performance from last
- 37:05Speaker 20: year bringing into this season that was.
- 37:07Speaker 11: That was a big deal for. Us So douglas is
- 37:10Speaker 11: a very very quality. PROGRAM i respect coach over there.
- 37:16Speaker 11: Tremendously that was a big big deal getting over the,
- 37:19Speaker 11: hump getting getting. Playoff leaning found out after it. Happened
- 37:25Speaker 11: it was first time in a. While but it's back
- 37:29Speaker 11: to the. Kids they did a great. Job they got
- 37:32Speaker 11: a playoff, berth they fought through a three game series and.
- 37:38Speaker 11: Advanced AND i think that's why that we are having
- 37:42Speaker 11: the success that we're having this early in the.
- 37:44Speaker 20: Season so you mentioned really tough district as. Always you,
- 37:48Speaker 20: Know district twenty one usually pretty. Solid that just the
- 37:52Speaker 20: area that That normangy is in in TWO a with
- 37:55Speaker 20: both the county Schools centerville And leon and of Course
- 37:58Speaker 20: Love lady IN grapelnd as. Well, uh what do you
- 38:02Speaker 20: expect to see from your boys once we get into
- 38:04Speaker 20: district play and go up against these pretty tough.
- 38:07Speaker 21: Opponents well after we get out of our last, tournament
- 38:11Speaker 21: the message to The normangy players is anything can happen
- 38:16Speaker 21: on Any tuesday Or friday in our.
- 38:18Speaker 11: DISTRICT i think, anybody anybody can beat. Anybody it's not
- 38:22Speaker 11: a fore gone. Conclusion and we're gonna we're gonna have
- 38:27Speaker 11: to play quality baseball well our district, schedule and there's
- 38:32Speaker 11: gonna be a, team there's gonna be a there's gonna
- 38:34Speaker 11: be a quality baseball team on the outside looking. In
- 38:37Speaker 11: when it's all said.
- 38:39Speaker 20: What happened last, year there definitely were a couple of
- 38:41Speaker 20: teams left out that you know could have made some
- 38:43Speaker 20: noise in the playoffs that they would have snuck. In
- 38:45Speaker 20: you mentioned coming up on your last tournament this, Week
- 38:49Speaker 20: so today y'all Play oakwood and then this weekend gonna
- 38:53Speaker 20: be In summerville for that. Tournament so what are your
- 38:55Speaker 20: thoughts on these upcoming.
- 38:56Speaker 21: Games we we have a couple of, guys as did
- 39:01Speaker 21: if they want to.
- 39:01Speaker 11: Get into when we get into two games a week,
- 39:06Speaker 11: rotations then if they want to get on the, mound
- 39:09Speaker 11: this is their last is, There this is their last
- 39:12Speaker 11: chance to prove that they can command the control control base.
- 39:17Speaker 11: Runners so talked about that yesterday leading up and that's
- 39:22Speaker 11: the that's what we talked about going into, uh The summerville.
- 39:25Speaker 11: Tournament SO i mean we got we got five games
- 39:28Speaker 11: coming up and then after that it's Just, Tuesday friday
- 39:32Speaker 11: to the to the rest of the. Season command strike
- 39:35Speaker 11: zone football in play and see what.
- 39:39Speaker 20: Happens, yes, Sir the pitching situation in the tournament's obviously
- 39:43Speaker 20: a lot different than district. Play In uile, playoffs it's
- 39:46Speaker 20: best two out of three series as opposed to that
- 39:48Speaker 20: tournament style of. Play what are your thoughts on how
- 39:52Speaker 20: those two playoff formats reflect how good a team is
- 39:56Speaker 20: and which one do you think maybe the better team
- 39:59Speaker 20: wins more?
- 39:59Speaker 11: OFTEN i LIKE, UH i like the series we. HAVE
- 40:03Speaker 11: uh we have quite a few quality pitchers and uh
- 40:07Speaker 11: In normiangy any of THEM i WOULD i would be
- 40:09Speaker 11: comfortable putting them on the. Mound so three game series
- 40:12Speaker 11: works into our. Benefit not really worried about it throughout
- 40:17Speaker 11: the course of our. District that the quality of teams
- 40:20Speaker 11: that we're going to be facing and playing, it it
- 40:24Speaker 11: would help going. Forward so it we have about five
- 40:29Speaker 11: guys THAT i would trust on the, mound that's a
- 40:32Speaker 11: good problem to. Have and we're going to use this
- 40:35Speaker 11: last week to see who are one and two are all?
- 40:40Speaker 20: Right and then last question for you here after last
- 40:43Speaker 20: year's success that we talked about, earlier what what does
- 40:46Speaker 20: success look like this? Season what are you what are
- 40:49Speaker 20: some of your goals for this?
- 40:50Speaker 11: Year, well every year you want to build on the previous,
- 40:55Speaker 11: year especially with the amount of players that we have,
- 40:59Speaker 11: Returning and SO i don't really want to put a
- 41:03Speaker 11: specific title on it or specific bang on. IT i
- 41:08Speaker 11: just want to play quality. BASEBALL i want to keep
- 41:11Speaker 11: keep pushing to get better every day of, practice every.
- 41:14Speaker 11: Game we don't make the same mistake, twice keep playing
- 41:19Speaker 11: for one, another and the winds happen on their. Own
- 41:24Speaker 11: but everybody wants to win that last game at the
- 41:26Speaker 11: end of the, year Like centerville.
- 41:27Speaker 20: Did all, Right, WELL i appreciate your time today and
- 41:30Speaker 20: good luck to your panthers this.
- 41:32Speaker 11: YEAR i appreciate. It thanks for having.

- 45:06Speaker 1: for our next. Guest his book is Called moses and The.
- 45:11Speaker 1: Doctor Two, Men One championship and The birth of Modern.
- 45:18Speaker 1: Basketball and this is when THE nba was worth, watching
- 45:22Speaker 1: with stars that were worth. Watching Luke applin is the. Author,
- 45:29Speaker 1: luke how are.
- 45:29Speaker 5: You i'm doing?
- 45:31Speaker 1: Great how are, You, Chip i'm doing. GREAT i really
- 45:33Speaker 1: enjoyed this. Book i'm old enough THAT i was around
- 45:37Speaker 1: When DOCTOR j was in THE. Nba THE aba and
- 45:42Speaker 1: The Dallas chaparralles were part of THE, aba AND i
- 45:44Speaker 1: grew up there and we used to go and watch
- 45:46Speaker 1: a doctor and we had to get there early because
- 45:48Speaker 1: he put on a show during.
- 45:50Speaker 5: Warmups oh my, GOSH i can't believe you got to
- 45:53Speaker 5: See DOCTOR j in The. Aba you, KNOW i had
- 45:55Speaker 5: a lot of people tell me that if you did
- 45:57Speaker 5: not See DOCTOR j in The, aba you actually didn't see,
- 46:00Speaker 5: him because that's where he was really. Doing he was
- 46:03Speaker 5: at his most creatives.
- 46:04Speaker 1: Then and one of the things THAT i really enjoyed
- 46:08Speaker 1: is the fact that you talked about he practiced this,
- 46:11Speaker 1: stuff the. Spins things would come to him him like an.
- 46:15Speaker 1: Artist in the middle of the. Night he would spend
- 46:18Speaker 1: hours on the basketball court perfecting these kind of moves
- 46:23Speaker 1: THAT i thought were just made up on the, spot
- 46:25Speaker 1: AND i know some of them, were but he'd been practicing.
- 46:28Speaker 5: That i'm so glad you picked up on that, chip
- 46:31Speaker 5: BECAUSE i think that that was the thing that surprised me,
- 46:33Speaker 5: too That Julius irving thought about himself as an, artist
- 46:37Speaker 5: and he thought about what he was doing in terms
- 46:40Speaker 5: of there are ways that basketball can be more, beautiful
- 46:43Speaker 5: that there are ways of basketball can be more. Exciting
- 46:46Speaker 5: and so he was on the playground doing these up
- 46:48Speaker 5: and under, moves these creative, dunks thinking about how he
- 46:52Speaker 5: can incorporate them into his arsenal, basically and so that
- 46:56Speaker 5: whenever he did do those things in a, game it
- 46:58Speaker 5: wasn't like he was inventing on the fly. Necessarily he
- 47:02Speaker 5: was taking things that had become fundamental to the way
- 47:05Speaker 5: that he played and just applying them to professional. Settings and,
- 47:08Speaker 5: so in a, Way Julius irving was the guy who
- 47:11Speaker 5: professionalized the, playground and.
- 47:13Speaker 1: He gave himself the, nickname did he.
- 47:16Speaker 5: Not he had a friend that he used to call
- 47:20Speaker 5: The professor because he was always, argumentative and his friend
- 47:24Speaker 5: would call him the doctor Because Juli servant had that
- 47:26Speaker 5: clinical look to. Him he was very. Cool you didn't
- 47:29Speaker 5: see like tons and tons of emotion From julia Serving
- 47:32Speaker 5: he never even seemed to. Sweat and, so, yeah they
- 47:35Speaker 5: called him the. Doctor BUT i think it also fits
- 47:37Speaker 5: in a different way and that he's he's. Surgical he
- 47:40Speaker 5: can sort, of you, know cut right to the basket
- 47:43Speaker 5: or like the way doctor would cut with the.
- 47:45Speaker 1: Scalpel he had this regal air about, him and everybody knew.
- 47:50Speaker 1: That everybody talked about that he. Was he was in
- 47:55Speaker 1: the middle of the locker room and it's, like, hey this,
- 47:59Speaker 1: guy you, know is something.
- 48:01Speaker 5: Special, yeah he had an aura to, him and that
- 48:06Speaker 5: aura was cultivated even before he makes up a professional
- 48:09Speaker 5: basketball when he's really playing at places Like Rucker, park
- 48:12Speaker 5: which is the big outdoor park In New York. City you,
- 48:16Speaker 5: know people would be going on, roofs into tree, tops
- 48:19Speaker 5: on top of, fences whatever they could to see him
- 48:23Speaker 5: because they just sensed this guy there was something very
- 48:26Speaker 5: different about, him and so he was really good at
- 48:30Speaker 5: cultivating not only that persona Of DOCTOR, j but the
- 48:33Speaker 5: aura of DOCTOR.
- 48:34Speaker 1: J you make the point that everyone Says burden magic
- 48:38Speaker 1: saved THE. Nba but Before, Burden magic showed, Up doctor
- 48:43Speaker 1: j was in the process of doing, that was he?
- 48:46Speaker 5: Not, YES i think that the way that the narrative
- 48:49Speaker 5: has since consolidated is That Magic johnson And Larry bird
- 48:54Speaker 5: took a, troubled drug, ridden violence prone league and made
- 48:58Speaker 5: it into this global. Juggernaut but it really Was Julius
- 49:02Speaker 5: irving whenever he comes over from THE, aba who takes
- 49:06Speaker 5: it upon himself to be the ambassador to THE nba
- 49:09Speaker 5: and keep them through those rocky years that they were.
- 49:13Speaker 5: Struggling and you have to remember that the playground way
- 49:17Speaker 5: That Julius irving professionalizes that sets the blueprint for players
- 49:21Speaker 5: Like Michael, Jordan Kobe, Bryant Anthony, edwards all of these
- 49:25Speaker 5: people that then have carried on his legacy that comes
- 49:28Speaker 5: From Julius. Irving and so you can't tell the story
- 49:31Speaker 5: of how THE nba became this juggernaut without really including
- 49:35Speaker 5: him in.
- 49:35Speaker 1: There and the narrative was THE aba was street. Ball
- 49:40Speaker 1: we didn't want. That you, know they were in nothing.
- 49:44Speaker 1: League THE nba looked down upon. Them the fact of
- 49:48Speaker 1: the matter is you had a lot of old white
- 49:50Speaker 1: guys running THE nba and they WERE i think scared
- 49:54Speaker 1: of what might happen with THESE aba guys who were
- 49:58Speaker 1: just free and. Dunking you couldn't dunk in THE. Nba
- 50:02Speaker 1: they had outlawed that for a. While they were afraid
- 50:06Speaker 1: of what might, happen that they'd come in take over the,
- 50:09Speaker 1: league ruined.
- 50:10Speaker 5: Basketball, yeah there was this narrative that THE aba was
- 50:15Speaker 5: this sort of you, know The Wild, west almost that
- 50:18Speaker 5: they were just doing every way and not playing basketball
- 50:21Speaker 5: quote unquote the right. Way and so When Julius irving
- 50:24Speaker 5: comes into the, league there's not only sort of skepticism
- 50:27Speaker 5: of him as AN aba, player but even a little
- 50:29Speaker 5: bit of fear as to what he, represented so that
- 50:32Speaker 5: whenever he makes it to the finals in nineteen seventy
- 50:34Speaker 5: seven with The philadelphia seventy six, ers they play The
- 50:37Speaker 5: Portland trailblazers led By Bill, walton coached By Jack, ramsey
- 50:41Speaker 5: the sort of white coach who had this meticulous. Playbook
- 50:44Speaker 5: people saw that as almost existential that The trailblazers have
- 50:49Speaker 5: to win because if, not street ball was going to
- 50:51Speaker 5: take over and THE nba would just be an uncontrollable.
- 50:53Speaker 5: League and so it really did take a lot of
- 50:56Speaker 5: effort On Julius irving's part not only to validate the
- 50:59Speaker 5: way he, played but to redeem THE, aba which is
- 51:02Speaker 5: WHY i think the nineteen eighty three championship was so,
- 51:04Speaker 5: important because he showed that you could play the way
- 51:07Speaker 5: that he, did the way that THE aba, did and
- 51:09Speaker 5: still be a.
- 51:10Speaker 1: Winner and you guys bring you bring up this idea
- 51:14Speaker 1: that these guys from THE, Aba Billy cunningham was the,
- 51:18Speaker 1: Coach Doc, moses they wanted AN nba championship to validate
- 51:26Speaker 1: what they did in THE. Aba that was one of.
- 51:29Speaker 5: My biggest surprises going into this book WAS i didn't
- 51:33Speaker 5: realize how much The philadelphia seventy six ers in, particular
- 51:36Speaker 5: became THE abba team in THE. Nba doctor j never
- 51:41Speaker 5: plays on a team up until they win the championship
- 51:43Speaker 5: that doesn't have at least two OTHER aba superstars on the,
- 51:47Speaker 5: roster whether It's Bobby, Jones Caldwell, Jones Moses. Malone Billy
- 51:51Speaker 5: cunningham's the. Coach he played in THE, aba and he's
- 51:54Speaker 5: facing off against like The Los Angeles, Lakers and in
- 51:56Speaker 5: the nineteen eighty three, finals The lakers had nobody on
- 51:59Speaker 5: their team who had played in THE, Aba and so
- 52:01Speaker 5: really these were more more than JUST nba. Matchups these
- 52:05Speaker 5: were matchups of like THE aba style versus THE nba,
- 52:10Speaker 5: Style and For Julius serving to continually lose like he was,
- 52:13Speaker 5: doing it was a knock not only on him but
- 52:16Speaker 5: on THE.
- 52:16Speaker 1: Aba let's talk About moses and WHAT i had forgotten
- 52:22Speaker 1: is he And doc kind of came into the league
- 52:26Speaker 1: at the same, time even Though moses was certainly, younger
- 52:29Speaker 1: but they were there to at the same.
- 52:31Speaker 5: Time, Yeah Moses malone starts out in THE. Aba he's
- 52:36Speaker 5: the first person to go directly from high school to professional.
- 52:39Speaker 5: Basketball and you really couldn't find someone as opposite As.
- 52:42Speaker 5: Julius As, JULIUS i, Mean moses was a, Banger he
- 52:46Speaker 5: was a. Sweater he was the guys grabbing the, rebounds
- 52:49Speaker 5: doing all the dirty. Work he did not think of
- 52:50Speaker 5: himself as an artist the Way julius. Did he thought
- 52:53Speaker 5: of himself as a, laborer as a blue collar sort
- 52:56Speaker 5: of guy who was punching the. Clock and the thing
- 52:59Speaker 5: About julius And moses is that even before they came
- 53:02Speaker 5: together on the nineteen eighty two eighty three six, ers
- 53:04Speaker 5: they were trading MVPs in THE. Nba they were making
- 53:07Speaker 5: it to the finals in THE. Nba they were really
- 53:10Speaker 5: kind of trying to individually to make it over the
- 53:15Speaker 5: hump and get the, championship and they needed to come
- 53:17Speaker 5: together and merge their talents for that to.
- 53:20Speaker 1: Happen anybody my age remembers faux fo And. FOE i,
- 53:23Speaker 1: mean that just sticks with. You it's been all of
- 53:26Speaker 1: these years, later everybody can quote faux fo And foe From.
- 53:30Speaker 5: Moses it's really ironic Because moses was somebody who did
- 53:35Speaker 5: not like to talk to the. Press he rarely said.
- 53:37Speaker 5: Anything he didn't want to talk after the. Games and
- 53:39Speaker 5: for him then to have said the line that everybody
- 53:43Speaker 5: remembers about that, team it's really interesting Because Julius irving
- 53:46Speaker 5: was always the guy that, talked that gave interviews and
- 53:48Speaker 5: stuff like. That But moses said the line that we all.
- 53:51Speaker 1: Remember it in the, epilogue you, know the story doesn't
- 53:58Speaker 1: necessarily end happily ever, after does.
- 54:01Speaker 5: It, no there was this idea That Julius serving And
- 54:05Speaker 5: Moses malone together they were just going to run the
- 54:08Speaker 5: table in THE nba for, Years but really what happened
- 54:12Speaker 5: was is that they come together at a time whenever
- 54:14Speaker 5: they are just starting to show their. Age julius is
- 54:17Speaker 5: in his, thirties the team around him is a little bit,
- 54:19Speaker 5: older and then they run into the younger players Of
- 54:22Speaker 5: Magic johnson And Larry. Bird they end up running the
- 54:25Speaker 5: table and so they only get that one championship.
- 54:28Speaker 1: Together it was a big, one it. Was the book
- 54:32Speaker 1: is Called moses and The, Doctor Two, Men One championship
- 54:36Speaker 1: in The birth of modern. Basketball Luke epplin is the. Author,
- 54:40Speaker 1: luke thanks so much for the.
- 54:41Speaker 5: Time thanks for having, me Chip.
- 54:44Speaker 1: My thanks To Luke. Epplin AND i, mean it's a great.
- 54:49Speaker 1: STORY i loved his reaction WHEN i told, Him, HEY
- 54:55Speaker 1: i Saw doctor j and his PRIME i saw him
- 54:57Speaker 1: with that, red white and blue basketball and that huge,
- 55:00Speaker 1: afro and it was something he was Before michael, right
- 55:10Speaker 1: and he was. Something and THE aba still love THE. Aba,
